Chill house
PREFS : Re-Hash, 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Punk, Sound Check (Gravity), Double Bass, Rock the House, 19-2000, Latin Simone (¿Qué Pasa Contigo?), Slow Country, 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) MOINS PREF : Clint Eastwood (Ed Case and Sweetie Irie refix)
Great music covered up with the gimmick of the group being 'cartoons'. Mix of hip-hop, punk, latin beats with Gen X slacker vocals. They're like the Chimpmunks but there's no Dave to drag down their style. Best Tracks: Re-Hash; Clint Eastwood; 19-2000
This seemed like a gimmick at first, but then I couldn't stop listening to this record when it came out. Not their best album, but maybe their catchiest.
4.5 gorillaz er chill 19-2000 remix er nice
The album which really introduced this group to a mainstream audience. I remember buying it in a FNAC in France along with Daft Punk's Discovery and All Killer No Filler by Sum 41! What a summer of music listening that was. Some great bops on this album and some long-lasting earworms. Some equally forgettable B-side tunes. But it was a fun concept back when the idea of media-crossover music projects had regained some novelty, and the way it was pulled off was really clever with oodles of mystique and a slick PR campaign aided by the then-mainstream music outlets. Very hip and cool to be a Gorillaz fan.
Does it count as experimental? It is to me anyway. Couple of really great tracks.
Some bangers, forgot some of the fluff was very fluff
Think "Demon Days" the follow up is by far a better album but enjoyed listening to this. Guess it's on here as the first "Virtual band" however due to real musicians behind it it's a good album in it's own right. 4
A great Album, almost for All occasions. Some banners but not quite their best one.
:)
Hey, I was just talking about these "guys" with my Blur review! I much prefer this project to that one, but I never really gave their first outing a fair shake, much preferring the 2nd and 3rd proper LPs. Those aren't on the list, though, so... this one was pretty alright, although I thought I'd be more confident in the four star I'm giving this. Obviously very enjoyable, but you can tell there were times when they were like "what if we did a song with this?" and never expanded it past that. That certainly has its place, but it can feel aimless here. Still, the stuff that is good is really good, just wish this isn't all those new to Gorillaz had to work with on this Generator, as this certainly isn't their best work in almost any aspect, save for a representative one or two songs most people already know any way. Man, I sounded way more negative in this review than I really thought. Basically, Gorillaz good.
I love a few of these songs (19-2000, Clint Eastwood), I'm mixed on a few. I don't hate any of them. This was a fun album at the time that hit a bunch of different genres. Kind of like a mellow version of what Linkin Park was doing at the time...
Thoroughly enjoyed this
Yep. Liked it. A nice mix of styles.
Overall, I enjoyed this album. Some songs lost my attention, but for the most part it was really good!
Thank the lord for these California Raisins.
I like this album quite a bit - some awesome tracks, especially the ones with Del (Clint Eastwood, Rock The House). M1 A1 might be more of a Blur song, but I really like it. Dropping a star because of Man Research, that track was annoying.
I wish I’d thought of the idea to make a cartoon band. This album is perfect for falling in and out of a feverish dream, not really knowing what’s real and what’s not. (I listened to this album while having serious migraine issues) I was today years old when I found out that the Blur lead man was the creator of Gorillaz. Turns out he’s some sort of (new) genius. I love the creativity here. They’re laying the groundwork for their more refined sound in future years. This record is very exploratory with a new sound that doesn’t fit into any particular genre. Rather than re-hashing the same old riffs we’ve heard before, this has a different vibe and different delivery. And that earns pointz from me. However, when experimenting there are always a few duds and this album has some of those. So it’s not perfect, as not every song rocked the house. But overall, I was always looking forward to what was coming next, which is all you can ask for in an album. My sneaky favourite on the record was Sound Check but 19-2000 is a beauty. I always wanted a cool shoeshine.
Loved this. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the record straight down. Ibrahim ferrar is awesome on Latin Simone. His record with buena vista social club is great. Really sick and interesting beats. 19-2000 was a blast from the past, hadn’t heard that song in forever. Apparently the Clint Eastwood beat is just a stock preset from the Omni chord 😂
A solid album. This took me back to middle school.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Clint eastwood, Man research, Sound check, Punk, Rock the house, 19-2000, Starshine
Clint Eastwood and 19/2000 are classic standouts. The rest are interesting jams with a lot of instrumentals over various styles of music blended into a unique Gorillaz sound. Pretty interesting blend of genres which is pretty ahead of its time.
I've grown to like Gorillaz a lot more in the past few years, and while their debut is not my favorite, it shows a lot of promise for the group. Damon is clearly excited to focus his energy in a different direction than Blur allowed him to. There's a lot of fun stuff, but I believe that Albarn learns a lot between this album and his next few works. It's really only a 3.5 star to me, but I'm gonna bump this one up.
yep me encanta, igual blur > gorillaz 🤯🤯😮😮
A lot more punk rock than I remembered. Great way to kick off a project. Del kinda hard carries though.
Not much to say, just good shit that's enjoyable to listen to.
It was when this came out, or maybe the second Gorillaz album, that I realised I'd got the Britpop wars all wrong and Damon is the genius from that era. I think you only get to extend a career by taking on new influences and trying new things, and this is a great example. Better than any Blur album with some great songs and still a great listen.
Album would be a 3 for having "filler" tracks but the profuduction was great. 5/4 is a work of art Del is a GOAT ft (Clint & Rock)
yes
More fun than it deserves to be.
Bom demais
I fucking loved this album when it came out. This is probably the only record I had at 13 that still stands the test of time (unless MPeople are now cool?). Haven’t actually listened to it since about 2002 so I was chuffed when it popped up. For me this is Pokemon Blue on Gameboy, Phillips and Quinn on MOTD, six week’s holidays of blue sky and sun, a 20p pick and mix, Freddos that were 10p, jumpers for goalposts until it was too dark to see, knicky knocky 9 doors, Adam Sandler, New Labour, them tiny red spiders that lived on bricks, Kenan and Kel, not a care in the world. Probably, anyway, I’ve always been a worrier of some sort. Either way this is pure nostalgia AND it’s still mint. Double Bass was my top highlight, can’t remember it first time round but I’ve had it on repeat since
Quite good init
Great!! When this first came out I didn’t like the original version of Clint Eastwood but I was wrong the remix sucks. 19-2000 both versions are dope
Long time gorillaz fan but never gave the debut a full listen through. The popular tracks are obviously bangers but the less known ones are also well produced catchy bops. Not perfect by any means but great listening throughout
Really solid album. It's kinda all over the place tonally, but it makes for a really relaxed and enjoyable listen.
Gorillaz kind of defies musical categorization and seems to pull samples and influences from lots of genres which keeps it interesting. Ultimately, that inclusion of different influences results in a sound that is much more sonically pleasing compared to Blur. But I do feel like I am missing something by not seeing the accompanying visual art that is part of the "virtual band" experience.
vibey vibes Clint Eastwood
This was the first parental advisory album I ever owned. My mom was slightly worried about it, but I was so innocent at the time I thought the intro to Left Hand Suzuki method was a soda being opened.
Raw. Superb harmonies and some absolutely classic vibes
Really like this one. 4/5
This album puts down the roots of the hip hop infused alternative pop that would end up fueling more than two decades of collaboration filled, masterful albums. Certainly one of the more experimental sounding of Gorillaz’ discography, there are more loose ends here than I would like. A couple ideas definitely don’t end up going anywhere. Still a fantastic debut showing from the worlds most successful virtual band.
Very interesting album, especially for the time. Also quite the departure from what Damon Albarn did with Blur. I really like how chill this music is, even with heavier tones.
I used to love 'Clint Eastwood' growing up, many a memory around that song. Damon Albarn has got to be one of the greatest artists of the 90's and beyond, two best bands of their areas and of their time, brilliant solo artist, he just doesnt miss. And this is where his (IMHO) better work starts with Gorillaz. Overall a great and unique album which I rate 8/10 (It's not the BEST gorillaz album).
This album wasn't what I expected. Blur, techno/electronic, brit pop, alternatives, experimental mish mash. Did not expect the Spanish ballad. Liked the first half better than the second but I did the the whole thing was pretty good. Hello is anyone there?
Nice
Clint Eastwood is one of the most progressive, intellectual rap tracks I've ever heard. It stands the test of time. The lo-fi funk on the rest of this album is re-listenable. It can fill backgrounds and foregrounds. I love "Tomorrow Comes Today" as well. Solid album from the Gorilla Gang.
Sooo exciting so many fun rappy raps and songy songs
This is a solid debut album from Gorillaz. This came out when I was in high school, so it does have a place in my consciousness and I definitely like the majority of the album. Very interesting mix of genres and strong songwriting. I'm a fan for sure. Standout Tracks: Re-Hash, 5/4, Clint Eastwood, Punk, Rock the House, 19-2000 (and Soulchild Remix version), M1 A1
fun! upbeat. solid 4, minus points for having that one weird song.
Gorillaz’ debut album was a vehicle for Damon Albarn to break out of his Britpop legacy and embrace whatever he wanted. As such this album contains elements of trip hop, hip hop, psychedelia, and more all thrown together. The result is an idiosyncratic album that simultaneously feels groundbreaking and familiar at the same time. The disguise of Gorillaz allowed this music to break out of genre altogether. The album suffers due to its length and its unevenness, but is still a landmark album making a very important point about the music industry.
Very good
great and catchy songs, and some really cool concept songs
It's really good, but also clearly a 40 year old white man's hip hop/reggae based midlife crisis. Gets an extra point just because of the Ed Case remix tapped on the end.
Sehr geil.
I’ve only really listened to singles from Gorillaz and Plastic Beach which is another boss album. I proper enjoyed this one. Even Clint Eastwood which is a song I’ve not heard for years was just so much better when listening intentionally and not just in the radio. Damon Albarn is fucking boss
This is the debut album by English alternative rock & virtual band Gorillaz. The virtual band idea was spawned from a friendship between musician Damon Albarn and comic book creator Jamie Hewlett in 1997. The music from Gorillaz is primarily alt rock and hip hop or trip hop, but it has inspiration from many different genres including lo-fi, dub, art pop, punk rock, rap rock, Britpop, and Latin. This album performed well critically & commercially, reaching top 3 on UK charts & top 15 on US charts. Due to the success of the album the Guinness Book of World Records awarded Gorillaz with the title of the "Most Successful Virtual Band". I like a good amount of Gorillaz' music, but I had never heard their first album in its entirety until now. It was good vibes all around and I'm sure their other albums are just as amazing.
Only heard singles from this group before. Wish I would have listened to the album sooner! Great tracks that keep you interested and nice beats. Solid album.
Better than I remember
I liked it a lot when it came out - a bit indifferent now, but still got to give them props.
I really like this Gorillaz, might be my favorite. The grooves and vibes are beautifully crafted and it's an overall very pleasant album to listen to.
Funny that, after so many years, this first Gorillaz outing sounds like Blur b-sides.
Feels good
Some good songs on here. Not gonna give this one a 3. Gets a little funky at times though, but still good
I remember when this came out, people went crazy over it, Clint Eastwood was playing all the time. Looking at it now, that is probably one of the weakest tracks. There’s so mischievous interesting stuff on here, like Double Bass and M1 A1. The music feels experimental but at the same time nostalgic. I can’t give this a 5, because with the later stuff, especially Demon Days, it’s obvious that Damon Albarn was capable of taking this music so much further.
muy entretenido
8/10 dragged on a bit but overall i found it enjoyable. just good beats.
7/10. I suppose I liked this. It was a bit long, though.
It was definitely creative but I didn’t like all of it. Also can’t get past that they were the original virtual idols. 7/10
I remember how groundbreaking Gorillaz were when they came out. I get the hype, but I wouldn't go back to this. I guess it's just not my cup of tea and I've heard the singles so many times. With that said, it still deserves at least 4 stars.
Incredible and fun concept. Great tunes, but the second half slows down a bit.
This is good, but I'm not sure it completely stands the test of time.
Oh dang, this is such good stuff! I loved this album, especially Clint Eastwood, of course, when it came out and it was my happy soundtrack for a while. Just. So. Good. So happy to be reminded of this one. 4/5
I want to give this 5 stars because Clint Eastwood is so good, but in all honesty, 50% of this album feels like filler. Still, the highs are super high on this and Del tha Funky Homosapien deserves major props for his work here.
good album
I like the Gorillaz sound, its sort of a soothing low energy bleakness. Like walking in the rain. See Tomorrow Comes Today. Clint Eastwood and Rock The House are two great singles. A good album all round.
Haven't listened to this album in forever... guess what, still awesome!
Loved how this album began but it seemed to trail off a bit near the end. Of course, then hits hard with Clint Eastwood!
Somehow, I had never listened to the whole album before. It was a long album but surprisingly solid throughout
always groovy, and a much more punky sound than some of their later work. 4/5
It’s no demon days, but this album is a classic.
At this point I cannot remember if I ever listened to this one in full back in the day, I do remember the hype and the smashing hits but no the full album. Weird. It was an instant classic although I feel it is just too long. Still brings good memories back you know?
I've listened to Demon Days before, and I though that album was fairly interesting, but I think I like this album more. There's a lot of various in the music, but it always seems to work really well with Damon's voice. This album also deserves a lot of credit for being the first album by a virtual band (at least that I know of, I'm sure someone attempted it before and no one cared). It's a cool idea but it would be meaningless if the music didn't grab you. Lots of credit to Gorillaz for making really fun music that also has a lot of substance to it 4/5
Really enjoyed going back to this. Clearly made for the joy of making music, agreeably lo-fi. Better to come from Gorillaz mind. And they are brilliant live right now.
A 'virtual' band in 2001 - the whole Gorillaz package was innovative, just see the music videos! As a standalone album, i don't think it's their very best music (Plastic Beach is my fav) - but this is where it all started, and still has some absolute TUNES on it.
This record is the sound of the new Millennium. It's the sound of countless hours spent on Gorillaz' homepage in the early era of the internet. It's the sound of being so proud of writing a guitar riff in 5/4 time that you name the fucking song '5/4'. The first half of the album is so damn strong. On 'Tomorrow Comes Today' Albarn announces his follow-up plan to fronting one of the most succesful Groups of the 90's - just do it all over again in the new Millennium. This time standing on the shoulder of hiphop and triphop groups of the previous decade. Closing remarks: '19-2000' is far superior in the Soulchild remix version, and a special shoutout to Damon's hopeless flute playing on 'Rock Da House'.
There was an entire year during the early years of high school where I didn't listen to anything but this and Demon Days. And while Demon Days still receives heavy rotation I don't listen to Gorillaz half as often as I used to. 2001 is quite late for Albarn to dive head first into trip hop. But the once leader of the past decades most prominent british music genre nevertheless resurfaces as strong as ever and ready to spearhead music for many years to come. There's the obvious classics: "Tomorrow Comes Today", "Clint Eastwood", "Rock the House" and "19-2000" (the far superior Soulchild remix is unfortunately only available on the deluxe edition). And while later Gorillaz records further developed the sound of this record, songs like "New Genius (Brother)", "Sound Check (Gravity)" and "Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)" passes any Gorillaz vibe check. The inclusion of the "Clint Eastwood" remix as the last track almost made this a 3 / 5. But the absolute insanity of being so proud of your own ability to write a riff in 5/4 that you name the song just that.. Well if that alone doesn't deserve a 4 nothing does.
Det gamle Gorillaz, eksperimenterede, catchy
I'm excited to finally hear this popular cartoon band, and I'm not disappointed. It's fresh and unique, an elegant mix of hip-hop and rock. It's not hip-hop and rock in the same way as the exploding nu metal scene of their time with bands like Linkin Park, and definitely not the earlier hard rocking sound of RATM. Unlike those, Gorillaz are chill and carefree, without much angst. And of course it doesn't end there, they also explored more territories such as electronic and punk. As a whole, it's a compelling album with many surprises, albeit inconsistent. On my way to listen to "Demon Days".
I was prepared to not like this album, but it grew on me
Good album!
Didn’t realize Damon Albarn of the Blur created this band. I really ended up enjoying the album, listened twice.
Love these tunes. Didn’t know much about these guys and now I want more more more.
A nice blend of styles. I like the easy going nature, it's great music for the summer.
Absolute banger
damn good album
A lot of chill songs by the end and great beats at the start. Some songs that took a while to pick up but ended up being pretty good.
Haven't listened to this for ages. Good
Great album, but you once you heard what comes next with Gorillaz you feel it is just the start. Still great to hear and some great songs.
Good album. Embodies my prepubescent to pubescent taste
Never listened to this debut. Some standout tracks in the first half for sure, not sure it needed to be over an hour long. Dragged around "Double Bass" and didn't recover fully.
From reading about this album I learned that the composer of one of my favorite movie soundtracks (Ravenous) was a member of Gorillaz! Cool! This album is very close to a 5 for me.
This one is really a mixed bag with a variety of styles across the album which are all performed convincingly but still feel like they have common threads. My appreciation of the tracks also varies wildly. Punk and M1 A1 were absolutely atrocious punk songs, Sound Check on the other hand was a great, chill trip hop song. Clint Eastwood is a pretty cool classic and I also enjoyed the Soulchild remix of 19-2000 a lot. In general, this is not an album I'd revisit, but I like the concept and applaud the musical flexibility.
A classic
A really really good album Could of given this 4.5 if available really enjoyed it loving the feeling and groove
I luv luv luv. Very solid, very good for a sunny morning commute - I danced to work w/my psl
I’ve owned this album forever but I have to admit, I don’t love the entire thing. There’s about six songs I really, really like (“Tomorrow Comes Today” is legitimately one of my favourite songs) but the rest of it, I could take or leave.
I feel it falls off a bit towards the end, didnt remember feeling that way. Id 3.5 it for that but there are rules
All the songs have a baseline of chill but there is still a good variety of sound on the album. The Del tracks are fantastic. I can listen to this anytime. Favorite: Clint Eastwood
Tracks heard before: Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, 19-2000 Enjoyed every track until 19-2000 when the following happened - Went to get lasagna and missed Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo?) and was confused to return to Starshine. Traced back and found the pair of tracks fitting despite the confusion and bad first impression. Hard to say if the tracks I hadn't heard before would be worth to return to, although none was disliked.
Tracks heard before: Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, 19-2000 Enjoyed every track until 19-2000 when the following happened - Went to get lasagna and missed latin simone (que pasa contigo) and was confused to return to starshine. Not a bad pair of tracks despite the confusion and bad first impression. Hard to say if the tracks I hadn't heard before would be worth to return to, although none was disliked. 4/5, good start 1/1001
Top ten blur album
fín plata, ekki endilega besta
1st Listen Grade: B Favourite Track: Clint Eastwood
Classic.
Way better than I'd ever given it credit for.
Thier best album imo.
Good
Much better than I remember and I didn't remember much. Found myself warming to stuff I didn't recognise and still enjoying the couple of singles.
Every genre all at once. Love me some Gorillaz. 4/5
Classic but I do enjoy other gorillas albums more.
experimental,funky very enjoyable
Used to love this. Reckon it’s dated now.
I great album mixing genres like pop and electronic with other genres like punk and Bossa nova, my favourite tracks are Double bass, Clint Eastwood and Latin Simone, a fabulous debut for a interesting band 👍
I think that Demon Days and Plastic Beach took what this album did and perfected it so a part of me thinks they should be included instead, but I also understand that maybe the s/t was included because it was first and therefore had the impact of being the album that introduced Gorillaz. It's still a killer album and Clint Eastwood is undoubtedly a classic track.
very enjoable
The sounds on this album remind me of the 2003 Blur album, which came after this. More rapping on this one though! I like Damon's and Blur's music a lot!
Great album, hadn't listened to it fully before but I'd say I'm a Gorillaz fan. Clint Eastwood is obviously a classic, but I also really loved Double Bass. If I am remembering right, these guys are like our last group, you don't know what they really look like they are just animated but this was a fun synth, groovy lofi hip hop type album.
We love the Gorillaz, don't we folks? Well, I do. I've always found the concept cool, even before I listened to much of the music. Reading the Apple Music description for this one taught me that Damon Albarn was in Blur, a band we've also had on the list. I can confidently say I prefer his Gorillaz stuff. A virtual ape band way before those godawful NFTs became a thing. It's hard to argue with albums like this, lots of variety and cool beats/songs. "19-2000" made me laugh, seems like something you'd dub over that video of Lebron reacting to the worst beat you've ever heard. And I recognized "Clint Eastwood" as well, that had to be their first big breakthrough. I say "they" even though they aren't really even real. In short I dig it! Favorite tracks: Clint Eastwood, Re-Hash, Man Research, Sound Check, M1A1, 19-2000. Album art: Very cool. Committing to the Gorillaz art style immediately. Reminds me of the warthog from Halo, but the dudes in the car are cool as hell. And the graffiti font is great too. It's a good kind of simple. 4/5
I loved it! Never listened to it properly as an album, but really enjoyed it
Heard before: yes Really enjoyable revisiting this one. When it’s great, it’s perfect. When it’s bad, it’s at worst inoffensive - and even then, the grooves make it perfect for music to listen to while working, exercising or cooking. Favourite tracks: Rock the House, Clint Eastwood (Del tha Funky Homosapien!), Latin Simone, 19-2000 Least favourite tracks: no dislikes really, some tracks a little too repetitive
4.3 - Simple but creative. Ahead of it's time.
Interesting album. I imagined Gorillaz to be way less experimental. Lots of interesting songs on this album. A little dull in parts but a good listen .
Slappers: Clint Eastwood feels like it has just always been around, like I've known it my whole life. Guitar on 5/4 is so crunchy and i love the synth tones. Sound Check has an insane mixture of vocals, beats, lyrics, whatever. No reason it should work and it's amazing somehow. Rock the House is dope, and I kinda forgot about it. Crappers: Double Bass is just aight. Has all the insane variety of Sound Check but doesn't congeal for me. 19-2000 is so fucking good but I think has been co-opted by various commercials and video games in my brain. Vibe: This album is kind of all over the place, but it's better than I remember, and the good stuff is really, really good.
Tomorrow Comes Today Clint Eastwood Sound Check Gravity Double Bass
Chill
Good and unique sounds make this album as interesting as it is creative. On first listen it seemed disorganized and as if the songs would drag on to add more listening time for the album. I found it easier to appreciate the chill and calming nature of this album when I realized the Gorillaz were aiming to create vibes with their music, not to artificially add substance. The flow of the album is mostly good, however, I feel like a few of the songs are out of place and do not fit the theme of the album. Overall the Gorillaz successfully combined genres of rock and rap with inclusions of samples, to spice up their well produced electronic beats.
In both bands' prime, Oasis were clearly a thousand times better than Blur. Yes, Girls and Boys remains a great single, and one can find enough corkers in Blur's back catalogue to make a top-notch best-of compilation, but Oasis' laddish, proletarian grandeur made Blur vs. Oasis a fight between a poodle and a rottweiler. I still sigh with exasperation at the sight of Damon Albarn on that one-off show Britpop Now, singing Country House in tweed, plus fours and a deerstalker cap. But our Damon is a resourceful sort. After Blur and Oasis helped kill off Britpop with the catastrophic disappointments of albums The Great Escape and Be Here Now (and in retrospect, neither warranted the hostility brought down upon them, each just being somewhat weak follow-ups), Blur sought to change course with a darker, less jovial couple of albums (not too dark, mind you), while Oasis just carried on doing bog-standard Oasis songs to increasing irrelevance. Then, when Blur took a hiatus, Damon founded the group Gorillaz with the comic strip artist Jamie Hewlett. Gorillaz are a virtual band, partially intended as a riposte to the manufactured nature of boy bands. Also, a virtual band liberated our Damon, enabling him to explore genres unmarriageable to Blur's aesthetic, such as hip-hop, electronica and various cul-de-sacs of world music. Along with this, the strategy grew of Gorillaz being highly collaborative, this album alone featuring the rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, Ibrahim Ferrer of Buena Vista Social Club and members of Talking Heads. Yep, my compadres, we're talking a massive case of record-collection rock. And yep, this album has that deeply infuriating gripe affecting most record-collection rock: it's really good, but tries far too hard to be cool, resulting in a album that appears as geeky as a stamp collector. Geekiness is not a fault in itself, but this album's strand of geekiness is inimical to rock n roll, and surely the primary function of this album should be to rock n roll? On the best songs (particularly the singles), Gorillaz transcends this pretence, but the forays into dub and punk on Slow Country and, er, Punk induce nowt but awkward winces. Please understand that this is a very good album, and my criticisms are the honesty of fondness. But I would say the list made a mistake on opting for this instead of their second album Demon Days, to which I would have given the full five. Not least, Demon Days contains the single Dare, which managed the inconceivable by getting my beloved Shaun Ryder to number 1. Just for that, I forgave our Damon for everything that miffed me about Blur, and I would merrily kiss his left teste in gratitude.
Enjoyed it more than I thought.
If I had one bad thing to say, it’s that a couple songs are almost- dare I say- annoying. But as my first Gorillaz album (and the 1st one) I was left wanting more. Favourites: 5/4, Clint Eastwood, Tomorrow…, Slow Country
A lot of fun and some great bops
Exciting! This is just such an assured debut that covers just about everything stylistically. I'm keeping it at a 4 as I don't think it's as consistently strong as their next two albums but it's a true classic
Not just Clint Eastwood, it's pretty great all the way through.
One of the great albums of the 00’s
This album probably was very "revolutionary" in 2001 and still sounds like it. It's not the best thing from this list, and it's even not the best Gorillaz work, but this mix of electronic music (that I don't like) with some rock spicy is catching! It's one of the good examples of how to use technology in favor of the songs, instead of just playing repetitive sounds forever and calling it music. I hope the current versions of the book also include the most recent works from the band. We deserve more.
Deeply satisfying
I forgot about this album. I think I appreciate it a lot more now that I have aged.
Gott fyrstatugarpopp. Mistæk, en margt mjög skemmtilegt.
Ok album, enjoyed it more than my last listen, still only enjoy the album enough as background music
Interesting sound. Worthy of more listens
More than stands the test of time.
not my fav gorillaz album, but a goodie nonetheless!
a band and album that cannot really be pinned to one genre, very creative without being annoying 4/5 is a personal favorite as skater song
Pièces préférées: Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, Tomorrow Comes Today, 19-2000, Latin Simone (Que Past Contigo)
Vibes and a couple iconic tunes.
p good
As someone who learned violin via the Suzuki Method, absolutely losing my mind at "Left Hand Suzuki Method"
the music that we choose
Rock alternativo. Un megahit. Un 4.
Bien
This is a good album. I remember the first time I listened to some of these songs a couple of decades ago with my friends and how special it was for me. After listening to it again I see that it still sounds fresh and unique. Good music to bring good vibes
It's not my favourite Gorillaz album but I do like it. It has its weaker and stronger tracks but overall a great variety.
Very good
Ahhh, simpler times. We had just survived Y2K, and everything felt fresh and new. I remember being thrilled when Blur and Bay Area hyphy collided in this stunning debut, although I couldn't for the life of me remember any of this music, save Clint Eastwood of course. A fun musical journey, whether or not it's familiar.
Brilliant concept, well helmed...
I had an annoying, unidentifiable song permanently lodged in my head from 2013 - 2019. It turns out it's "Rock the House." Good to have some closure. I like the album otherwise, a nice halfway house between trip and hip hop. "19-2000" is a forgotten gem.
The cool shoeshine
I didn’t get a chance to listen but a friend I work with at the Food Bank said it was her favourite album. Also it’s the only band the App sent that my son Dylan went to see in concert without me. Prob not the best rating analysis but 4 it is.
I've heard their singles over the years but I've never had a chance to listen to the full album previously but I'm happy to discover that this is a really good album! I've been listening to Damon Albarn lately but I'm not as familiar with his early stuff with Gorillaz but this seems to be a great place to start. Love the nods to Ennio Morricone and Augustus Pablo's recorder on Clint Eastwood and Tomorrow comes today. Really good arrangements and clever writing throughout. Nice to see that this still sounds pretty fresh despite the fact that its over 20 yrs old.
tap your toes and clap your haaaaands
This is all over the place but the highs are high
4.5/5
alright
.n
super inconsistent album, can tell theyre just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, seems experimental in a lot of styles
So, I'd never heard the whole album before. Clint Eastwood was everywhere in 2001. Couldn't get away from it. Don't get me wrong. It's a pretty great track. There are some really crafty elements that make it stand out, but the overall album was kinda boring. It's not a trash album, but just didn't live up to the hype.
I can understand the inclusion, but I am not going to listen to anything other than Clint Eastwood again. Demon Days would be a different story
3/5
did't like this.
Decent album. Not really a fan of Gorillaz but this album was actually one I would listen to again. Nice usage of multiple instruments, such as having the recorder on Rock The House.
It's okay. Drags quite a bit with occasional bangers.
Damon Albarn finding his footing in the trip-hop space. Incorporates a lot more guitar and rock instruments than the other trip hop records I've listened to. Prefer the poppier albums like Plastic Beach and Demon Days (3.5).
These guys were huge with my 5th grade students and their hick gangsta wannabe sophomore brothers.
A couple of very good tracks in Clint Eastwood and 19-2000. The rest is just a bit Meh.
I'd lost sight of how experimental this is. And like all experiments you have successes and failures. Damon deserves a lot of credit for innovating, and most of the time it really slaps. But I'm still coming to terms with the more challenging cuts. A picky 3*
Not particularly exciting or interesting. Gorillaz have gotten a lot better since this one.
I enjoyed Gorillaz at the time, so much so that I saw them live on the _Demon Days_ tour. That's a much superior and focussed album than this which feels like a 'throw it all at the wall and see what sticks' approach. Not that it doesn't have a handful of really good songs on, but they could easily have chopped this down to a nice 35+ minute album and it would be a much better listen My interest in the group waned shortly after _Demon Days_ and beyond radio play, I haven't really listened to them since. Fun fact: I programmed my Nokia 3310 with the melody for _Rock the House_ as my ringtone.
Clint Eastwood is an absolute banger, and I really enjoyed 19-2000 as well. Unfortunately, the rest of the album never quite reaches the same level for me. It’s an interesting mix of styles and I can see why it was influential, but overall it felt a bit inconsistent
Better than I remembered. I understand why it made as many waves as it did
Idk, it’s fine. Sounds pretty dated to me, and the ideas don’t come off as too original at this point even though it might have been at the time.
Clint Eastwood absolutely slaps but wasn’t into most of the rest
I loved the storytelling and the nostalgia for the early 2000s.
Gostei bastante. Boas inspiracoes ritmicas.
It was hard to escape at the time and there are a bunch of well known singles that I like. The concept of the band was obviously pioneering (to my knowledge) and they deserve credit for that. I don’t think I actually listened to this album until after Demon Days, which I much prefer. Perhaps because I never really listened to this album much, I didn’t really develop an affection for it, there are some good songs no doubt, including a nice collaboration with Ibrahim Ferrer, yet somehow it feels less than the sum of its parts. Part of me thinks I should award 4 stars but I’m inclined to say 3.
I hope they play Feel Good Inc next The concept of a virtual band is just really cool to me; making it almost feel like more of an art project than a band marred by mismanagement and personal conflicts, there’s a lot of interesting stuff to dive into there. There’s a couple of great tracks on here; Clint Eastwood’s the big hit and pretty easily the best track on the album. I really like Del’s rapping on the two tracks he’s featured on, just a really interesting hip hop artist where you have no idea what to expect before hearing a verse. I do think the album wears out it’s welcome by the end; the vocals are solid but I don’t think he has a lot of range in this one. Just feels very disappointing since the mediocre songs are just eating up the runtime of this album and you absolutely know they could do more. I think most people agree that Demon Days is a better Gorillaz album and somehow got left off the list entirely, so little confusing why their debut’s on here and their magnum opus isn’t, but I’ve kinda given up on trusting the 1001 committee to actually listen to stuff the people like from the 2000s. Not a bad album by any means but still very clearly finding its footing
Man I knew a girl in high school that was into gorillaz, but only the lore. like she liked the little cartoon drawings of the 4 guys and had to explain that the blue haired one actually had his eyes gouged out and they werent all black as a stylistic choice and why the one guy was green and also maybe a nazi? deep stuff anyway I say all this because perhaps the weirdo lore is more interesting than this album. I liked the more rappy songs on here, but i can't really remember any of them to save my life.
Some fairly interesting sketches or demos. Snatches of catchiness. In retrospect, mad how flat some of this sounds now. I know the sub bass was a bit of a novelty but a lot of this does come off a bit unfinished. In theory this should be right up my street; I like a bit of cut-n-paste sampling, and plenty of lo-fi beats, plenty of dub, etc. etc. - but the overall picture feels incomplete. A stoner backup drive. Which is weird for an outfit with such attention to detail in most other parts of their presentation. Think it needed remixing to kick life into a few of the tracks - case in point; Clint Eastwood. Original is enervated and flat as hell but the more familiar Ed Case reworking is great.
Ecclectic and exploratory, a restless artist making the most of the freedom to do his own thing, mess around with new styles, instruments, genres, and arrangements - he stumbled and and shambles into some great stuff but it's also often half-baked and cummulatively overlong.
3.4
Nice album, but Gorillaz Demon Days is much better in my opinion.
329/1089 tbh i was expecting a bit more. it was good but i was expecting more Feel Good Inc vibes which i didn’t get faves: clint eastwood, sound check (gravity) 68/100
I'm a fan of the Gorillaz, genius mixing elements of rock and hip hop, one of the first to do it. This album is very punk. 5/4 was prob my fav song. The rest of the songs have a similar feel but are different in their own ways. Heavy drums and bass are consistent. The overall vibe and rhythm of the album is like going to party, drinking too much, and waking up again to party again.
329/1001 Gorillaz - s/t Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❓ I always admire the range of genres that Gorillaz bring to the table, but often; like on this album don't fully stick. I think because of this, it all feels a bit uneven - when it's good, it's great and then there's a lot of OK stuff.
I get why people love them. I get the allure of the grungy laidback almost west-coast sound. But I can't pretend that I've ever enjoyed listening to the Gorillaz - even their hits.
this was my first time listening to a full album from this band, it definitely carries that 2000's vibe the instruments and production made me feel like I'm a teenager living in parts of an American city in that timeline, lyrically it didn't really amaze me but it wasn't bad either. I liked new genius (brother) the most. overall a good 6.5/10
It turns out that the things that many people disliked about Blur were Graham Coxon’s guitars, Alex James’s basslines and Damon Albarn’s face. Damon Albarn has lovely cheekbones, but he definitely let his teeth go to hell. I didn’t think that would be a sticking point though - look at Bowie! Look at any rapper with a grill. But what really surprised me how many people jumped onboard once Albarn wasn’t doing character and story songs. These were the hallmarks of Blur and, I thought, Albarn too. But, no, naturally the big American hit do Blur was Song 2 - no particular craft and no particular meaning. Gorillaz too somehow made a bigger splash with less precision, less concern given to the state of the nation or Albarn’s personal life. Perhaps it just a permission to accept Albarn’s innate musicality without having to endure his personality - and there were 90s stars who were only insufferable personality. Thus I’ve always been a bit baffled by Gorillaz - it feels like studio doodling that got out of hand. There is plenty of polish, but nothing much feels finished. Even as the band continues into Albarn and Hewlett primary creative outlet, it feels avoidant. Yet, strangely, that just makes Albarn more apparent - all the guest turns are evidence of his power to attract and, indeed, are maybe an excuse to depersonal the work further. There is plenty of charming music tossed off on this debut, much of it upbeat and populace, but I have always found Gorillaz in prospect and execution depressing. 2.5 Several people of my acquaintance who had no love for Blur were extremely enthusiastic about Clint Eastwood when it came out. Gorillaz was, apparently, the project that made Damon Albarn palatable to some. Part of it, no doubt, is that his face wasn’t attached to it. I gather Damon has ‘one of those faces..etc’. I love Blur and I don’t mind Damon’s face and I was perfectly happy with Gorillaz when it came out. To me it represents Damon at his most trivial as a songwriter. To me the album mostly comes off as a collection of studio sketches, polished here and there - the basic backing loop and hook worked out - but basically unfinished. Everything, even the shorter stuff, goes on a bit too long - expectant of a final edit that never happened. Damon’s lyrics come off as hastily assembled nonsense and are delivered in a rather unfussed manner - nothwithstanding the silly voices that Damon tries out; almost as if he wants to imagine what a different singer would sound like in the final version. What is he doing on Man Research or Starshine? Stop it. Anyway it’s mostly rather good. Damon Albarn is brilliant. His nose for forging a bizarre, beguiling hook out of nothing is marvellous. His attention to texture and instinct for eccentric but sound combinations of instruments is as impressive here as anywhere else. And even amongst the general dishevellment of this project there are absolute gems. Latin Simone is chief among them; Ibrahim Ferrer delivers, quite beautifully, a brilliant melody that one can only assume from much of the other material, began life with Damon Albarn doing some kind of awful Ibrahim Ferrer impression. Imagine what something like the artistic seriousness and soulfulness of Ferrer’s vocal would have done elsewhere here. Anyway apparently there was no time for that sort of perfectionism - Damon was too busy for that sort of thing. He was probably right; make something and move on is the way to do it. Anything else is asking for trouble. 3/5
this album allowed me to understand Gorillaz more
The only Gorillaz album on this list is this???
ooooh crazy steve, where have you gone, what have you seen
It was, ok.
it's a good start, but better things will come. 3/5
Clint Eastwood is a bop, wasn't too big on much else
Interesting indistrial grunge sound but not really for me, too much guy music
Couple of good songs can not make up for the rest of the album being way too out there, somewhere between fun and childish. They did better stuff later. I remember being so disappointed way back then when I bought the album on the strength of Clint Eastwood.
I enjoyed some of this and some bits I didn't. Always was a fan of Blur and their sound and there were some good collaborations on some of the tracks.
I don't know if it is an issue of the book releasing when it did or something else, but having this album on the list and not Demon Days is odd. While their next couple of albums are classics, this one is just fine. You can hear what Gorillaz would become in some of these songs, but it does feel like they are still finding their direction a bit. This album contains a lot of little experiments and some are definitely more successful than others. Not a bad album by any means, but I think it is mostly worth listening to as a whole to hear where Gorillaz came from rather than the kind of album you have to hear before you die.
I’m surprised this is rated so highly. I can hear how it is good technically but somehow it just doesn’t engage me. With Clint Eastwood and a few other tracks I get the feeling they’re on a go slow and I want to turn the handle and speed them up a bit. Don’t even know if that makes sense. Anyhow, it’s a meh from me
1.I don’t like the dub that they are doing but it is gorillaz. 2. Apparently she turned his dad on. Respect. 3. Samezies. Love the song 4. First 30 seconds and its my jam already 5. We all love this song 6.amazing 7. Not the best punk 8. Nice tunes very cool 9. Really cooool 10. Not my cup of tea 11.same 12.intriguing 13. Nice 14idk why gives me indian 15.nah In general not a dopamine hit to my adhd ass so will cherry pick the ones that I liked
Good
I've heard of these guys before, but never actually listened to anything by them. It turns out, they're yet another British indie rock band, albeit with some minor rap influences. Technically, they're a "digital band" composed of cartoon characters, but that's giving them too much credit. The songs are actually pretty good for indie rock, but they're not amazing or anywhere close to it. It feels pretentious in the same way all the other albums of its kind do, and the musicianship isn't particularly great. This is a fine enough album without much in the way of distinguishing features from other genre efforts. I genuinely don't know how this band got popular when they sound the same as 5000 other British bands of the era.
ehh ok
VBCVG
I'm a little confused about the hype surrounding this album. This could be because I just never listened to it before, but to me this is average at best.
A lot of good songs but they don't compliment each other at all... Something is messing 3/5
The cross-genre sound was as innovative as the gimmick but most of the tracks are as forgettable as most Blur songs.
Whilst I've always liked the Gorillaz debut album, I think it really stands in the shadow of their two next albums. This debut is certainly interesting in how it throws a bunch of ideas and genres, together, but is definitely less successful in doing that consistently and even cohesively. But for every stumble there is at least a Clint Eastwood or 19-2000
I really didn't enjoy a lot of this album. The vocals are really not for me, and even some of the song writing, which is pretty experimental, is just a swing and a miss on most tracks. I think this was a band that was still figuring out their sound, and one of their later albums would've been a better pick. This album does have a couple bangers on it though. The songs with rap features really stand out, and Punk was pretty decent. Clint Eastwood is timeless and (probably?) influential, and brings up the score an entire star.
i'm probably unfairly reading into it with historical hindsight, but i swear there is something that feels exciting about it. fresh and weird, like the development of new ideas that they're just trying out and haven't really been nailed down yet. it feels like a clearly *cool* record by a guy that really likes music. it runs a little long and there aren't a lot of crazy standout hits, but the baseline sound is dope. Clint Eastwood is tough to beat, but the favorite might be Starshine. strong 3
I had forgotten how fun this album was/is. Good listen.
Good but not great kinda flavorless
Not as great as I was expecting .
Okay, but nothing earth shattering.
This sold 7M copies? During Napster days? While I like some of the songs on here, I just don't see how that occurred. There are some tracks where guest vocals are brought in to make the songs more interesting, but what I want are songs that I'll remember after the album is done. This album has one song in that category. Going to need more songs than that to be a great one. Three stars.
All I can think about is Clint Eastwood(mostly the dude though side note but I can’t believe he’s still alive)
It's ok, it's clear why people celebrate Demon Days more than this debut because its a lil rough around the edges for me
Got some all timers and found a new fave
Neat.
It was okay kinda weird for weirds sake
Not as good as Blur ngl
Really liked the lo fi vibe on lots of the songs but some of the rapping wasn't really for me. Overall nice album
ok
Interesting to revisit this one after such a long time. The Gorillaz project has gone in so many directions, especially recently with the Mountain, that it’s easy to forget they started from a pretty basic marriage of Britpop vocals and hiphop beats. I rate this a 3.5 but since this website doesn’t do half stars I’m going to be a bit unfair and round down. The highlights from this album are all pretty good but in between there are a lot of times where the beats do all the heavy lifting on a track, but they’re usually not very engrossing beats. I mean, this was an experimental album and they had no idea when making it that the Gorillaz concept would pop off. But the more I go through this list the more I’m realizing it’s less about the *best* albums of all time than the *most important* albums of all time. That’s great, too, but it’s still a bait and switch.
Not entirely my style but I've enjoyed it. Good rhythms and rough percussion, really nice.
Ground work laying album for the Demon Days, which is better all round than this. Enjoyable in parts, but their identity evolved from this point forward.
Good album. A lot of bangers, lots of trip-hop kinda songs. A 3,5.
A couple of bangers like Clint Eastwood, 19-2000 and Slow Country and the rest were okay but didn’t discover any new favourites
Great debut album, even the bonus remixes at the end are good. 3.5 stars
Despite being a casual Blur fan and how popular this band were in my school growing up, I had never sat down with a full Gorillaz record until today. It was impossible to avoid heavyweight hits like 'Clint Eastwood' and '19-2000' and as excellent as those singles are, I was doing myself a disservice by not checking out the entire record as it is such a diverse record, even if not everything lands perfect. This is a smorgasbord of genres, featuring everything from trip-hop to Latin music to reggae to punk rock. The wide variety of sounds does stop the record from feeling cohesive. It feels like Damon just threw everything at the wall here! Even if not every track is a hit, I tip my hat for the willingness to experiment. Dude could have just half-arsed another Blur record and made millions!
6/10
Not crazy about it
I liked a lot of this more than what their live-action counterparts have done (with the exception of Tina Weymouth’s collaboration on “19-2000.” She has been consistently excellent). However, I’m going to round down from 3.5* mainly because there’s little chance I would seek this out to listen to again as a whole.
Worth listening to for the wide variety of sounds.
I knew one song from this album, it starts off really strong and then kind of teeters towards the end, it feels more like a David album and hasn’t consolidated the Gorillaz sound yet imo. the gorillaz sound is definitely in Clint Eastwood but wanted it to be a bit more consistent throughout the album
Great
Album #82: Gorillaz Genre (W): Trip hop, alternative rock, dub, lo-fi Singles: Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Rock the House, Tomorrow Comes Today I have listened to this album several times. Thoughts?: I used to have this CD and I would listen to it a lot with my mom. It’s a nostalgic favorite of mine, but I’ll be listening from an objective standpoint, and not through the nostalgia filter. The production on this album is amazing, I love the hard-hitting hip hop beats. I also love the versatility of this album too, in terms of the various genres touched on. Some songs are forgettable however. Favorite songs: Re-Hash, 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood*, Punk, Sound Check (Gravity), Rock the House, 19-2000, M1A1
ya lo habia escuchado 3/5
The radio singles were the standouts on this work. It was the first of a persistent, though sparse, musical career of a virtual band with real musical talent behind it. The phenomenon of the media mask apes concepts introduced in the Macross Plus OVA with Sharon Apple, the AI musician that created visual performances using sophisticated holograms, which Gorillaz executed well to a stateside audience. I still love Demon Days waaaaay more.
Fun background music, and I enjoyed hearing what came next. However i didn't feel like the album was pulling me inexorably through it. Instead it and I were just there together. Not great, not bad, just solid. And as soon as i wrote the above M1 A1 comes out of nowhere and rocks your socks.
First time listening to Gorillaz Pretty decent New genre for me The weird sounds on some of these were cool, in a way
I remember this being better when I was in middle school.
One of those albums that comes along every now and again and manages to be different. It’s actually more "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" looking back, but the way it melded genres and predicted the world to come is pretty amazing overall. Despite its quirky ideas and range finding, it’s has also also got some bangers on here as well. Solid 3
Sounding like a natural progression of sounds from singer/founder Damon Albarn's previous band Blur, the songs on this record made me think of one word: kooky. There is a some scat-like singing by Albarn, sometimes with vocal effects, and pretty random instrumentation, rhythms, and riffs. Not everything sounds completely fleshed out, but maybe that's a good thing. Lots of stream-of-consciousness noodling, going with the flow, or maybe just messing around with a DAW. "Clint Eastwood" is the big single from this, the debut album. Del the Funky Homosapien provides a thought-provoking unique-flow rap on the single and another song here "Rock the House". There are other hip hop beats here and there. Some dub sounds. A collab with Tina Weymouth and a couple more with Miho Hatori, produced by Dan the Automator. Decent grooves.
good
Fun album. I remember everyone at the time talking about the guy from Blur doing this. Good vibes and timeless.
3.4/5 carried by clint eastwood
It was okay, demon days is better imo
Some good tracks on this one, but I wish I had enjoyed it more. It just wasn't for me.
I mean, being their first album we can listen the essence their future albums will have. there's like 2 skips but a good album.
So, Clint Eastwood is an absolute classic. And my favorite thing about the band is their ability to build around all kinds of styles (Latin Simone being a good example here). I enjoy the trip-hop feel that's closer to hip-hop. But some of the other tracks just wear on me: 19-2000, or the vinyl record crackling on New Genious which fails to feel random and real, but just repetitive and fake. Gotta give it credit, though, and I definitely enjoy a lot of it, but overall just so-so for me. 3/5
loved the instrumental, not really any standout songs, and i wouldn’t really listen to any of them on repeat, but the songs aren’t bad
When you take the novelty of animated band away it’s a mediocre album. I think most of the appeal came from marketing back in the day. The only good tracks very also released as singles. Some tracks are hypnotic, but if it weren’t animated with the strong marketing behind it, it would not have been nearly as successful. The sharp S of the lead singer irks me.
Just remember enjoying it more when it was released than now. I was a bit underwhelmed
Charms, not without, etc.
I actually like this album. It’s not amazing by any means and I really struggle with the sound on some parts but it was more about the music video at the time it came out. There is still some bangers on here mind. I think if I had this on vinyl and I sat back and listened more I’d give it a 4 but just going off a quick listen it’s just ok.
Some rather good tracks but on the whole just listenable.
Decent
Not content with being called the Ray Davies of the 90s, here Damon Albarn decides he's going to be the Archies of the 00s. And like the Archies, he's capable of creating a decent song from time to time, but it just doesn't feel substantial. Shoutout to the classic "flimsy Steve" tweet though, that alone is enough to justify the existence of this project.
I liked some of this but it lost me in parts
Bob Dylan stinks
