A very ok cartoon album
Interestong
Not my cup of tea
I had no idea this was the guy from Blur
Mostly good vibes; a little too funky at times. Liked Punk and Rock the House.
It’s a fun and vibey one for sure, even with some down-trodden lyrics here and there. Very experimental and ‘messing around’ kind of album going on here. Standouts are tomorrow comes today and double bass.
Didnt know Clint Eastwood was that good. Rock the House is also a honorable mention.
*2001. British alt rock. *Clint Eastwood is the only song I know here. *A lot of the songs sounds pretty similar to Clint Eastwood (not in a bad way), and then there are some that are more electronic and experimental, and then some that are Damon Alburn driven. *Fun, interesting album. Very listenable, but not anything that particularly struck me or made me want to revisit. *Even though Damon Alburn from Blur is one of the lead singers, this sounds nothing like Blur. RATING - 6/10
Diverse music. Did not touched me at all but it was good to listen to it. Once.
First listen to entire album and apart from singles Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 music was a little above average.
Very chill, low key vibe music. Besides Clint Eastwood, Slow Country is the best song on the album. A very early Gorillaz album, you can tell they’re trying to find their groove and are almost there.
The idea alone is kind of genius — a fully realized virtual band that blends music, visuals, and attitude into one cohesive project. Gorillaz pull from trip-hop, hip-hop, dub, and alt-rock with an effortless cool, and the album has a distinctive, slightly hazy atmosphere that sets it apart. Still, for all its creativity, it doesn’t quite land for me. The individual tracks feel more like sketches than fully developed songs, and while the vibe is consistent, it rarely grabs hold in a lasting way. I can admire it more than I actually enjoy it.
Not sure what I was expecting here, but this was an interesting listen. I guess it's sort of a hip-hop project? Not rap, not rock, but somewhere in between. Not bad, though, just had a difficult time getting a pulse for it. Top tracks: Clint Eastwood, Man Research (Clapper), Double Bass, Slow Country
At this point, the project was mostly just Albarn toolin around with some Garage Band presets and working his magic. Still good but really just a proof of concept for Demon Days. Except for of course, Clint Eastwood which might be the first Great Song of the 21st Century
There were a few very good songs on this album and a few very bad songs. The majority of them were pretty middle of the road though, and this album was pretty forgettable.
interesting album, only one song I really liked though
Probably the only Gorillaz album I ever listened to. Didn't like it that much at the time. Clint Eastwood is the standout by a large margin. Pleasant enough but kind of dissapointing. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Yes Owned: No 62/253 (24%) Will I get: No
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
I'm a fan of Gorillaz, but mostly their later stuff (Plastic Beach and onwards), so other than "Clint Eastwood" this was all new to me. I mostly enjoyed this, but it's a more subdued, down-tempo sound than I expected. New song added to my liked playlist: "Double Bass"
British indie hip hop, interesting fusion and good music by the Blur front man. Not a woo hoo album, but some solid songs.
I never got into Gorillaz. Which is kind of weird, cause I like Blur and Damon Albarn. I like Del the Funky Homosapien. But never really connected with anything Gorillaz did. But, I was willing to give the whole record a shot, figuring there was something I missed in 2001, cause this record was kind of a big deal at the time. Eh, I still don’t really connect to this. It’s mostly pretty boring. I appreciate what they were trying to do with the accompanying animation/virtual band and what not, but this record is not really my speed, I guess. 6/10
Solo destaqué una canción. En general bien
This album is more my jam, but still didn't necessarily stand out. Clint Eastwood and Double Bass went on my keepers playlist. 19-2000 is unlistenable if you grew up hearing the soulchild remix and Latin Simone was not good. Jon called this album lo-fi beats to study to, and, well, he's not wrong.
I liked the bass line in a lot of this. I would give it three stars. It's a fun album. Admittedly, I did not pay attention to the lyrics, so hopefully, they are not super offensive. Three stars
One kind of frustrating thing about Gorillaz is that I don't know what genre to classify them as. They just do their own thing I guess and this album is kind of a cool start. There is some very good songs - straight from the two first songs you can hear that the sound is a lot less polished and kinda more lo-fi than their other stuff but I kind of vibe with that, both songs are really good. Tomorrow comes today has very hypnotic production with those chunky trip hop bits and a great atmosphere in general. Clint Eastwood is a massive classic, the beat is so menacing and perfect for Del's lyrical acrobatics. Unfortunately with the exception of 19-200 the rest of the album is not nearly as good. Every song seems to have a problem, be that annoying vocals like on Man Research, trashy production like on Punk or a lack of interesting progression like on Starshine. The album is kind of a mess and I wouldnt rate it among their best but it has great ideas and glimpses of genius.
good mix of genres
muy tranqui, de chill. Bueno pero nada emocionante.
6/10
Some good parts, but ultimately quite hit or miss. Demon days and plastic beach are just much better.
This listen really reinforced my belief that this album is mostly held up by the banger singles. Without them, the rest of the songs sound like filler demos that haven't been tweaked enough. And they actively bring down the listening experience.
Fun for driving!
The Gorrillaz weren't what I was expecting (Heavy Metal). It's surprising how much you can incorrectly read into a band name. Having adjusted my expectations I found the album OK. The more of the 1001 albums I listen to, the more I realise how much value I place on good vocals. This was another album that was a bit mixed in that department. Musically pretty interesting and varied. The vocals were also varied but too many were too bland for me.
Was way better when I was younger
Pretry good
I remember this being all over Cartoon Network when it was new. Interesting concept for sure. I don't find it offensive. I wouldn't turn it off if someone else put it on. I even find parts of it to be pretty fun, but overall it's just nothing I get too excited about. Feels like novelty music.
Exactly what I'd expected. Arty, fun, and completely nonsensical. Love the lore and the videos, but the music just doesn't really do anything for me...
Very solid.
Very interesting to learn about the connection between Gorillaz and Blur. I wouldn't have guessed. I found this music more interesting than Blur's.
The first half was kinda bland outside of the hits. But the second half picked it up.
I wanted to like this more, I enjoy a lot of Blur, but nothing that I really loved on here. Some interesting stuff but nothing I found mindblowing. Low/mid 3
Sounds enjoyably nonsensical
I'm not the biggest Gorillaz fan, but I enjoy some of their songs. They have some really solid hits and Clint Eastwood is always good. First time listening to this album and I'd say I liked it overall, but it didn't convert me to fan.
I'm a fan of Damon Albarn, so of course I'm a Gorillaz fan. That said, this was the first attempt but they didn't quite get there on this record. Clint Eastwood is one of the great tracks of the Aughts, and 19-2000 is another gem. The rest is a bit scattered, if interesting and at times very good but often just messy. It all came together on album #2, but that one wasn't selected
3.5
SHEE
Surprise about how similar most of the songs are. Not bad, but not the Gorillaz that people know and love today.
I like Gorillaz. I like Clint Eastwood. I like 19-2000 and I really like M1A1. But I’m stuck on 3 stars because I just don’t like the rest of this too long album enough.
Fine
1/17 bekannt 7/10 Beste Songs: Clint Eastwood, 19-2000 (soulchild remix), re-hash
Didn't ever feel a connection to this album, it was just fine.
A few good songs. Lots of guests and I like the mix of genres
Concept is cool, each song is too long and very similar to the next.
There’s something here, I just can’t quite find it. There’s cool grooves and catchy lyrics throughout. I really like both singles “Clint Eastwood” and “19-2000” and I didn’t even know the latter was the Gorillaz. May grow on me.
I can kinda relate to this - if I can get into a Happy Mondays kinda vibe. (And suspend critical faculties: song '5/4' starts with a 5/4 guitar riff, but then puts 4/4 drums against that?) Small bonus point though for use of a melodica on a "dub-ish" album, yay! (Ersatz dub for pop people?) I find instrumental arrangements/production is often quite engaging, but the singing is generally a let-down. (Particularly when the singer tries to be serious, oh dear...) Overall, I'll say it's Good and Bad, 5/10. Also, I want to say, even though it doesn't exactly pertain to the original album: the idea that there is a "20th Anniversary super deluxe vinyl boxset" containing EIGHT different LPs is quite shocking to me. One cheeky, casual party album, gets turned into a bloated cash cow stretched over EIGHT discs? Emblematic that we can't have nice things / can't have a natural world any more / fall of Western civilisation - right there.
Masse bra, masse fillers
They sounds like blur j/
3.5⭐️/5 03.11.2026
To be honest. I expected a more compelling album. Clint Eastwood was such a massive hit that I absolutely love and other Gorillaz offerings from later albums I have also enjoyed. Most of this was just fine but nothing noteworthy.
These are really good, clean, well-produced beats, but they don't do a lot for me. There are moments I really enjoy, but a lot of it just kind of goes in one ear and out the other. I don't think I'm the target demographic, but I can see why the folks it's aimed at would enjoy it.
This had a little bit of everything
Solid album. Not really sure how to define these guys, but it’s a fun listen. 3.5⭐️ for 🦍🦍🦍
My co-worker wouldn't stop talking after two weeks of working from home, so I couldn't fully focus on this album. Not sure if I liked it, but for Clint Eastwood alone, I give it 3 stars.
Like the texture of the record. Cool use of melodica.
basically the Duck Rock of the 2000s
I've always thought that the Gorillaz were overrated and overhyped. My favourite track is "Clint Eastwood".
I have such nostalgia for this album and some of the songs from this are some of my favourites ever. With that being said, Gorillaz made much better music after this. However I still enjoy this album a lot and as a debut it showed a lot of promise. The characters this album is able to convey is so cool and I love the band and there designs. It is so weird looking back at this as it has a very dark, grungy tone which nowadays is so far from what they’re doing. As a start for their career, this was great.
Less brit-poppy and more trip-hoppy version of Blur. Which isn’t a bad thing (plus there’s a melancholic harmonica!)
The concept of Gorillaz as a group is very interesting to me. Makes me feel a little bit like a boomer lol. Lots of genre bending and blending. A lot of the tracks start off very cool and I’m into it, but most drag on to a point that I’m annoyed and ready to skip to the next.
Had some ok tunes but a bit repetitive, felt some of the songs needed another element or two
I think there's potential for me to like other Gorillaz albums more, but this one was just okay for me. For their debut album, it is solid though. There are elements that I appreciate throughout, but something is missing for me (and idk what is it). Some tracks that stood out were Clint Eastwood, Rock The House, and Latin Simone. I think the concept of Gorillaz being a virtual band with cartoon members is very cool and I'd like to check out some of their other albums. I really like Feel Good Inc, so maybe I should start with that one.
Never went deeper than the hits with the Gorillaz, so everything other than ‘Clint Eastwood’ was a new listen for me. This album is all over the place. Around half the songs are ethereal, goofy hip hop, but the other half range from electronica, stoner rock (think Sublime), and punk rock, to lo-fi instrumental tracks, and even one Latin-inspired song entirely in Spanish. There were more misses than hits for me, including a couple genuinely bad songs, but there were a few gems. Feels like a 3/5, just too unfocused for me to give it more than that
It was good. Definitely different for early 2000s.
The hits are good but demon days is better.
Some songs on this album are just not my cup of tea, for now.. However, this album also contains classics and very interesting sounds. I think if i go back to this in a different time in my life i might love it
hits only thank you
Had no idea that chorus line comes from this album. "Happy, feeling glad, sunshine in a bag" etc. Very good "doing work" album. Solid vibe but not incredibly alluring.
As a band, much prefer it as an audio-visual concept rather than just the music. None of it is bad (I remember ‘Clint Eastwood’ being the hot new thing on release, particularly the more garage version), but it doesn’t have the variety of some of their later releases and a bit one dimensional and plodding as a result.
I enjoyed this albums rap inspired songs. The instrumental focused ones didn’t really impact me much, but they were still good. This is my first time listening to this album from start to finish.
Some cool beats. Also some rap.
I was familiar with one song. I really liked double bass and 19-2000. Some of the songs were a little too experimental sounding for me. Some had a bit of a Beck vibe.
I thought I would like this more than I did. I only knew Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 going in and they are both bangers. The other song with Del on it - Rock the House - is really enjoyable. I liked Starshine a lot. Beyond that I found the rest of the songs anywhere from okay to good. It's a solid album, just not one of my favorites (which I was kind of expecting).
An extremely stoned album. I enjoyed some of the more upbeat tunes and think the final track is probably the best, but some of the more dubbed out chillers got a little boring and Albarn's falsetto is extremely grating. Clint Eastwood is an all timer of a track. What was I talking about?
funky chill lowfi ❤️
3.5 - good album
Not a bad album by any means but I've never been super impressed by any song of theirs. Also was so long that I got bored and was really antsy to skip songs.
Found it very dull compared to blur. No idea why people make a fuss about thrm
not my favorite gorillaz album but man i miss their old vibe and aesthetic Fav song: Tomorrow Comes Today
This was the first album I bought with my own money. I remember being really disappointed with it and thinking the singles were far and above the best things on here. I still feel that listening to it now. Gorillaz really came into their own over the next few albums, but I get why this one is on here.
Clint Eastwood still goated but there’s some interesting experimental stuff on here I kinda fw
2026.02.09
I've always enjoyed the Gorillaz singles, but never really did a deep dive through this album, I know Demon Days better. Clint Eastwood will forever be a banger, Del's work here is so good, and brought so much deserved attention to him and his career. Sound Check (Gravity) became a new favourite. It has its moments overall as an album, but a bunch of these songs just don't land for me.
7/10
This is overall an alright album, not too bad, I like the Clint Eastwood song, and the rest are just okay when playing in the background.
i love the garage vibes of the album
Good music. I’ve listened again, but not something I put on a heavy rotation at all. Good mix of genres.
when MTV aired music videos.
This was a diversified album with nice beats rhythms and grooves. Pretty good for a 1st LP. Not my kind of music but it was surprisingly easy listening.
This was such a strange thing back in the early 00's. A virtual band? The guy from Blur doing hip hop? But it was all very pleasant at the end of it. A very rare instance of the experiment being successful. Influence 3. Hits 4. Quality 4. Intangibles 4. Close but not quite for me 3.
I've heard a lot of their songs before though I haven't listened to a full album. I loved like most of the songs they had, great album. I will be adding most of these songs to my playlist.
I always thought the concept of Gorillaz was really cool, and I still really like the vibe of the music. I think in this album Damon Albarn was still finding his feet a bit so quite a lot of the tracks are lacking and I didn't particularly enjoy. However, I think this works brilliantly as an album if you listen to it as one whole thing. idk if that makes sense sorry ...
Mid album - everything felt quite unfinished, more like works in progress rather than a finished album
Apart from the 2-3 known songs, this is weird
I remember Gorillaz from the 90's on MTV and I really liked their sound and image back then, so I wanted to like this a little more than I did at first, but then I listened to it a second time and liked it more. There was a lot of reggae feel to the grooves, but some of the tracks were just filler ("Hello, is anyone there?" x 99,362...), and I kinda got tired of them after a while. This is a pretty long album. Three stars.
I've gotten lucky with the albums this week. A lot of bands/artists that I love, including Gorillaz. Their stuff is always so unique and "Clint Eastwood" is one of my favorite songs. The album is a bit long, but full of so many different styles of music. It was a good Saturday morning listen!
A band that knows how to build beats. So genuinely good tunes on here. A lot of sound experimentation and mellow tracks. Weak vocals really bring down some tracks. I wanted this to be great, but landed meh for me.
Evidently I only ever heard Clint Eastwood. It wasn’t what I expected from this album, but fair enough.
It's just all right.
It's a good album, one that was part of the soundtrack of my childhood. I will say it is a bit overrated, and not their best album.
3.5ish. there's potential for something great, here, but it just ends up being "pretty good".
It decent, not my style music, but I did listen throught it without feeling annoyed or pressed to skip. Better than a kick on the balls.
I hated Clint Eastwood when it came out but grew to like it after I fell in love with Del. Kind of weird but Double Bass might be my favorite song on the album. 👍Double Bass
des bons sons dedans
Interesting mix of musical styles. This album is the first time I heard trip hop and dub. My college radio station played "Clint Eastwood" so many times it became part of my freshman soundtrack, it was nice hearing it again.
A bit disappointing, this wasn't as good as I remember.
Plastic Beach is the essential Gorillaz album.
Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Ein paar Hits und viel Mist.
The album kind of meanders a bit. The best parts are with Del. A few really well done songs that are rather infectious. 3.5/5 Might listen again
Meh, their hits are their only good songs
Rock the House fav song. The rest is ok. might grow on me. 1 or 2 tracks I did not like
There were some fun, catchy moments but overall not really my thing. A lot of songs that I enjoyed the beginning of and then got bored by how repetitive they were. Interesting as an experiment, but not something I think I’ll listen to again. Fav song: 19-2000 - gets very stuck in my head but it is also too repetitive. Also liked the beginning of M1 A1 with the horror movie music and the building guitar but then it builds to such a nothing song Least fav: Sound Check (Gravity)
Cool concept, some fun songs, some just a bit too odd and repetitive for me. Favourite song: Clint Eastwood Least: Sound Check (Gravity)
Never heard of album or band. Looked up on Wikipedia and have low expectations. First song is pretty cool I guess. Very 90s. Cool sounds. 5/4 is a good song too, already this is beating my expectations. So many layers of sound working well together. Rock songs on rap beats. I like that. Production on tomorrow is so good. Piano and harmonica are awesome. Not really a fan of new genius. Just an ok song. I’ve heard Clint Eastwood. This is a banger of a song. Great production, great songwriting. Man research is a cool sound. Not the best song overall tho. Not a fan of punk. The clapping is so goofy and uneccasary. Gravity is really well produced. Great bass line. Lyrics are eh. Double bass was interesting. Not the best or worst. Rock the house is really fun. Production with the horns and flute is so good again. This one is really well written too. Hate 19-2000. Production isn’t bad the lyrics just aren’t good. Spanish switch up is crazy. Hate the guitar on this one but rest of it is good. Guitar is a lot better in strarshine. This one is interesting. It’s a catchy beat but lyrics kinda bullshit. Slow country is fine. Don’t have much more to say than that. Doesn’t blow me away. I like the piano tho. First minute 45 of M1A1 feels unnecessary. But I like the back half of it. Jamaican Clint Eastwood is kinda sick. I think I like the reg one better but this one is good too. 19-2000 remix is way better than OG. As a whole this album was way better than expected. It’s a fun listen but not life changing. 3.1 stars.
I wanted to like this more than I did, but "M1 A1" was great and of course "Clint Eastwood".
Outside of Clint Eastwood, album doesn't do much for me
I was never in to the Gorillaz the first time, some tracks I like, some I just don't vibe with, in all its a good album but not my cup of tea.
About 50/50 on the songs i would relisten too. I still think super sick though cause you can definitely tell this was the beginning of the sound for him.
Cute harmonies. Gorillaz have a really unique sound, very experimental. It was nice to hear some more of their work. I found this album to be pretty slow though, it kinda bored me… Fav song is ‘Clint Eastwood’.
Favorite Songs: 19-2000, Rock the House, Clint Eastwood Least Favorite Song: Funk Why on earth is the second half of this album so much better than the first? I was ready to rate this shit 2 stars until Sound Check (Gravity) and everything afterwards.
not my favorite gorillaz album, but it was solid
I love Clint Eastwood and even though I've definitely heard it hundreds of times I'll continue to jam to that song for life. This album came out when I was in high school and buying CDs was how I acquired music and I'm glad I never bought this CD. The rest of the album doesn't really hold up behind that song for me. 19-2000 is ok but again not a song I want to put on it go back to. I don't regret this listen but I did think I would like this a lot more than I do.
3.5/5 Stars Top Songs: Clint Eastwood, Rock The House, 5/4
Interesting concept and very fresh for the time. Good but not polished.
I think I've only listened to singles so it was great to listen to a full album. I enjoyed it It's not on this album but "On Melancholy Hill" is so good
Not what I was expecting unfortunately.
1/18/25 Not bad to listen to in the background. 6/10
Flows well, innovative at the time, good mix of genres, love it for that. A solid album, but will I revisit it often?
It's an alright album 5.8/10 3.5/5 Best song: Clint Eastwood Worst song Man Research (clapper)
Repetitive but not bad 3.5 stars
Not a bad album with some decent songs.
pretty cool
Lots of interesting ideas but I feel like none of them are actually executed very well and often come off more annoying than anything else. However, when they do come off the results are great.
good album. didn’t feel like an hour long, the album went by quite fast & I liked the variation with the features of different artists. -favourite tracks: LATIN SIMONE (QUE PASA CONTIGO) and STARSHINE
Virtual band where the songs are better with the video. Midspeed extrication-pop that probably had more relevance and angst in early 2000s
Well this one is pretty nostalgic for me... There's lots of experimentation going on in this album, and it's kinda cool, but ultimately it's just not all that interesting to listen to. Too much of it is just a slow, repetitive, plod. Highlights: - 5/4 - Clint Eastwood - 19-2000 Lowlights: - Man Research - Sound Check - Double Bass Too much here I wouldn't go back to to rate any higher than a 3, but nostalgia is going to save it from being relegated to a 2.
i like a few tracks but i still think this isn't their best album. it feels like they just produced music for the sake of having fun and experimenting at the expense of quality. i wonder what my opinion on this album would be if i weren't already a diehard damon albarn fan though
One of the worst cases of "right artist, wrong album". This is a fine album but it should have absolutely been Demon Days instead. Favorite track: 19-2000 3.5/5
It was okay, no strong thoughts one way or another
I don’t think I've heard music by any other artists that have a sound even remotely similar to Gorillaz. Similar music probably does exist, but none of it has popped up on my radar. Sometimes, Gorillaz's unique sound works REALLY well and I absolutely love them. On other songs, it sounds so bad that I seriously don't understand why this music is so popular. I didn't know it was possible to have this many mixed feelings over an album before. Truly fascinating. 3/5 I guess?
Ive heard select songs and they were great. The album overall isnt as strong and the amount of plays reflect that
Nice-ish
Not really my type but good
I like the singles on here but a lot of this just isn’t my taste. I prefer their next two albums.
Pretty good record. Clint Eastwood is an alt classic, great song
Gorillazia on tullut nuorempana kuunneltua. 3,5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nuorempana tuli paljonkin kuunneltua. Siistejä soundeja mutta aika paljon myös haukotutti.
An album which never really grabbed me upon release, and doesn’t really grab me now. I owned it, but never remember getting through the entire album TBH. The album successfully demonstrates Damon Albans eclectic range of styles and was an evolving departure from his previous work with Blur, especially with a heavy dub influence in places. It’s interesting, but it’s not remarkable in any way.
I like the early rap but not a fan of all of their stuff. I understand why it’s influential
This made me sleepy.
Good album. I enjoy Gorillaz specific sound
6/10
Nostalgia
strong 3
jan 7, 2026. first listen. i got sick so i havent been keeping to my business week schedule like id hoped [before listening] all i really know about these guys is that its damon albarns 4 sonas and they have really convoluted lore or something [on 5/4] yeah i can tell this is damon albarn LMFAO. this has a killer groove though i fw it [on tomorrow comes today] yknow this song is making me realize that id probably really like trip hop if i listened to more of it NOOOO MY MISOPHONIA I FUCKING HATE WHISTLING BECAUSE OF THIS STUPID MENTAL ILLNESS FUCK MY STUPID CHUD LIFE [on clint eastwood] HEY IM HAPPY IM FEELING GL i really like the melodica on this album, i dont think thats an instrument ive heard used much in "professional" settings like this [on sound check (gravity)] alright you got me with that switch up... i wasnt feeling it when it was just the guitar and vocals but the introduction of the other instruments brought the energy the track needed [on 19-2000] OH THAT LITTLE SYNTH LINE IS FROM THIS SONG?? ive heard that out of context so many times that i thought it was from a video game or something. yeah this song is chill as hell
7/10
Clint Eastwood is definitely the highlight of the album. The rest was interesting enough but a little slow to get in to.
This was a really fun album back when it first came out. This album is how I discovered Del The Funky Homosapien.
It was okay, still not my thing 100%
Okay I liked some songs. Not all. Good vibe though.
This was better and more interesting than I thought it would be. It was fading towards the end.
A classic, but not for me. Too chill. Need music with more energy.
It was good, different than what I usually listen too but it was good
When it hits, it really hits, but when it doesn't it's pretty forgettable. Songs like 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, and 19-2000, really stick out and are very fun and memorable. There are a few other good tracks, but so much of this is just not very interesting, which is a shame. But the tracks I liked are super good, like amazingly so. 6/10.
Not a fan of Gorillaz. The music is subpar and hasn’t really aged well, imo. Also, I’ve never liked the grungy animated characters of this “band”. Not for me.

Quiet, good rock
Fun and entertaining album, nothing ground breaking but still a fun listen.
It's well-produced with cool beat selection. New Genius (Brother) and Latin Simone stand out. Latin Simone especially is a welcome detour. Would've loved the album if it had more of that.
A lot of good songs, and Clint Eastwood is one for the ages, but also a lot of hallow filler. A solid debut album nonetheless!
i feel like this is pretty different from some of gorillaz other albums but i definitely like it to some extent. in a way, to me at least, the music feels a bit harsh but is still able to sound good with the fast beats and crunchy electronic-ness
3.5
Alternative not my style

Almost four stars. Just don’t see myself ever listening to it again.
Nice to see this pop up and don’t think I’ve ever listened to it all the way through. Ready for this one… …There are two sides to this. One side for its innovation and originality (unquestionable) but as music in its own right it’s kinda middle of the road, repetitive and a bit boring. It’s kinda good stoner, trippy music so maybe for the right mood but kinda a bit meh about it (3.5)
Gives feelings of 2000s teen nostalgia that I’ve never felt, mixed with futuristic vibes. Unique sampling. I like the use of guitar. Favourite songs so far are Clint Eastwood, Punk and Sound Check. After completing my first listen, i enjoyed how unique the album was as a whole, I couldn’t pin point the genre - showing me the many artistic avenues Gorillaz has in store for me. A negative is that I would have personally liked more lyrics as I felt the best songs contained the most lyrics that allowed other parts like beat and instruments to shine, forming a greater track. - 7.5/10 - Will be listening to more of their music but unlikely to revisit this one as a whole album.
Hørt i bilen lillejulaften med Jon
Lillejulaften. Vare i én time, men her kunne dem spart oss for minst 20 min. Du kan ta vare på: 5/4 Tomorrow Comes Today Clint Eastwood 19-2000
5/10 - Gorillaz seems to be one of those bands where I find a few songs on each album that I like, but never enough to want to own the album.
I like how all over the place this album is - there's a bunch of different genres and sounds going on. Most of the time it works but there are some misses and lulls in it. There's better to come from Gorillaz. 7/10
Loved the groovy vibes soo much. So many bangers in this song but some songs felt overstimulating a bit like It hurt my brain lol. Over all such a fun and hyper album that I will be listening to a lot trust.
Extremely inconsistent is the perfect way to describe this
Felt like I had sunshine in a bag for a bit
I enjoyed this and I feel like it sets the kind of artist Gorillaz will be but it isn’t something that blew my socks off.
The album had a lot of good points, and think that this is miles ahead of anything that Blur did as a band. I didn’t have anything saved at the end of listening to it, and that’s due to it just not really being my vibe overall. It was a fun listen, but hopefully some other Gorillaz albums will stand out in the future.
Very Beck-esque but not really for me.
Personally have to be in a very chilled mood to enjoy this type of music. One for personal taste.
Could never get into Gorillaz personally but this is the most I've enjoyed from them. Highlights Clint Eastwood Gravity Rock the house 19-2000 M1A1
Never knew Gorillaz got this experimental. They're great at making psychadelic beats and sounds, but the other 11 styles they attempted were mostly not that well done
Their debut, can’t grow up in the 2000s and not know this album. It’s something different which is nice, variations of rock, rap, pop all mixed together. With that said, I wouldn’t put this with my other 4s. ‘Tis a bit lower, in my opinion.
Clint Eastwood is one of the best songs of all time. The lyrics effing rule. Probably the only full rap I have memorized and can drop on command. I will say I wasn’t as into the rest of the album. But the gorillaz are rad as hell.
I just don’t get how popular this group got only to be mostly forgotten.
I remember hearing "Clint Eastwood" for the first time, and playing it on repeat for the whole afternoon. Here was something new and fresh and exciting. I was very disappointed when I found the rest of their output would be mediocre trip-hop with the residue of brit pop. And the "virtual band" gimmick has aged about as well as the millennium bug. 2.5*
Liked track 3 Wanted some of them to end honestly. Might have just been my mood.
The album that started it all. It's good and has some absolute slappers on it. Not all the songs are great though, it's not a perfect album. It's a 7/10 for sure though.
L that this is the only Gorillaz album on the list. Demon Days and Plastic Beach absolutely deserve a spot
I enjoyed this. Put me in a good mood, it was smooth & make me want to road trip
Clint Eastwood is great, but it’s the only standout on the album. I’d do a 3.5 if I could, but this ends up as a 3 because I honestly got a little bored of the album.
having a virtual identity, all the concept art, the mix of britpop and hiphop, gorillaz is overall really cool. 3.5. looking forward to Demon Days if that's on the list.
This album has all the elements of a good Gorillaz project, including some songs that are easy to zone out during. An impressive debut album but not the Gorillaz album I'll choose to listen to when I get the itch. 3.5 rounded ... Down
This was a meh of an album saved by one song, "Clint Eastwood". If it weren't for that, this would be an extremely solid 2.
First couple of tracks I thought this wasn't going to be my thing, but it grew on me. Unlikely to listen to the whole thing again but perhaps a few tracks will get a replay.
This in album that's much better if you compare it to Blur -- because Blur is very boring and this is somewhat less boring. Ultimately, Gorillaz produce a couple of extremely good songs per album (Clint Eastwood; 19-2000; Feel Good Inc) but are mostly Damon Albarn's shot at cosplaying Radiohead (without nearly as much experimentation). The Radiohead comparison is particularly interesting: that's a band that also produces a single or two per album that is accessible and the rest of their records tend to be difficult to get into for most people (read through the user reviews on a few if you don't believe me). Albarn, in his Gorillaz guise, puts on the dreamy, disaffected vocal disposition of Thom Yorke but the songs don't have the same magic of revealing themselves on further listens. On the one hand, it's laudable to write and record music that is immediately appreciable. On the other, it's kind of a problem -- they're not all great to start and they don't get better with more effort. While the grooves are competent (the hip-hop influences produce a strong rhythmic sense), the songs are ultimately boring. I'm listening to 'New Genius (Brother)' as I write this and it makes fine background music to work to; there's no hook in here that's going to come back to me like a bolt from the blue, though. It's not distracting, which is useful but not a complement. That they *are* capable of producing truly infectious and addictive tracks is the most frustrating thing about Gorillaz: in collaboration with Del the Funky Homosapien ('Clint Eastwood') and De La Soul ('Feel Good Inc' from Demon Days), they have made music that draws me back repeatedly and has done so for decades. Maybe that's the rub: this is just Albarn's Beat Factory and it's just missing a good MC to put on the finishing touches. Otherwise, we're stuck with his listless singing -- just a Thom Yorke mask without the artistic ambition. You can't even say Gorillaz lack the pretention of Radiohead. It's probably less for Gorillaz but there's a certain kind of pretense involved in having a necessarily visual component to your music project (which most people will only consume auditorily). It *does* say something about the ubiquity of music videos in the year 2000 that a band decided to become animated but, ultimately, it's meaningless: music videos are just an accessory to the music. It's window dressing if you watch the band live (which I recommend, just to sample further from this dodgy well). A perfect example of the whole thing is the song 'Punk'. An utterly vapid and insulting facsimile if you're a fan of punk music. Anyway, it's fine. 3/5 -- sounds like the year 2000, which is important. Why is it that I write so much more about records that are just kind of meh?
I like Gorillaz, cool to see the early exploration of their sound
This has a couple okay singles on it that got plenty of airplay at the time. I remember hearing 1999-2000 in Project Gotham Racing and that was the first I had heard of the Gorillaz. Clint Eastwood is fine. Otherwise not really worth hearing and I would not put it on this list.
Always been a Blur guy when it comes to Britpop, so I bought into Gorillaz right away. This is probably their least adventurous album but it still jams. The album largely feels like Albarn is trying to find his footing in this guise, sometimes falling back on guitar-y stuff and only selectively using guest stars, which become a huge feature of Gorillaz in future records.
Some really stand out tracks, but they don't really work together. It's like a lot of different ideas mismashed together but they don't all stick.
Odd but strangely beguiling diversion.
Guerilla Gorilla
A slightly up-and-down album, but an interesting and influential debut.
Monkey business, tbh.
Fun to listen to, once in a while
Overall Rating - 3.03/5 (6.06/10). Another solid hip-hop album.
Funky and fun.
Expected something better from this but honestly wasn’t that enjoyable, close to giving a 2 honestly but have to go with 3
Had to two Del tracks on heavy rotation when it dropped but honestly that’s about it for me
Whole album is carried by a few songs, so disapointing
One hit wonder tbh
Way more dynamic than i thought it would be. Spans so many genres. A few of the old faves in here but the other songs were just ok.
This was great. Love the “lo fi” sound and vibes of it.
I really don't like gorillaz
It as good as I thought it would be. Clint Eastwood is a good song though.
Definitely an experimental album. started a bit slow. One observation was lack of experience with production but was a decent album.
There’s potential but, in its current form, Gorillaz is boring
trip of an album
The Gorillaz self-titled debut album incorporates an eclectic mix of influences ranging from rap/dub/electronic to Latin rock. At times, this combination can make the album feel confused, and it lacks the drive and 'kick' of later albums "Demon Days" and perhaps "Plastic Beach". While it did not feel like a complete slog to get through, its hour-long length is certainly felt, and is not aided by weak tracks scattered throughout, including the opener "Re-Hash". Of course, this does not stop it from having fun songs such as the hits "Clint Eastwood" and "19-2000", and “Latin Simone” is a fun Latin rock tune.
I guess you would call this trip hop? Slightly better than it's dirty cousin, hip Hop. It might make some good background music if I was tripping but if I was going to seriously do some more psychedelics then I would probably just put on Jimi hendrix's masterpiece Electric Ladyland. This will not make my playlist. Not offensive but not exciting either.
Eh, Slow, a bit hip Hop - y, very whimsical
Denne skiva burde desverre vært ferdig for lengst
Good songs worth a listen
Not as good as demon days but still very good
3.5 56:56 - long album, Debut (of Gorillaz, certainly not Blur) 15 tracks as originally released. A lot of great songs but too much filler to get up to a 4. I love Blur too - the concept, with artwork thought, is a 5 - insanely creative to create a virtual 'animated' band that never ages kudos to Blur (Damon Albarn) and Jamie Hewlett for this.
While often interesting, I struggled to really get into this album. Deserving to be there, sure, that is a pretty new combination of music and worth a listen. However, it also feels too disjointed to truly be one of the great and I would have picked both other Gorillaz album instead of that one. I think they are really cooking in the middle (from Clint Eastwood to Rock the house) and it is not boring, but, in general, do I want to listen to it often, or was I moved ? Not even close. I was okay with this.
It's okay.
This record made more sense to me as a ninth grader. I remember having these songs on repeat and being attracted to how different they were compared to what I had listened to by that point. Even before, the singles were around in my younger years and that's why I feel that those are the strongest tracks here. However, today I put this on and some of my opinions have changed 5 years down the line. Besides the singles, I don't find myself as drawn to the other batch of songs besides a few good ones. I was never really a fan of Rehash and 5/4 anyway, so those opinions were not surprising. Though it's the fact that I am less drawn to Man Research and Punk that surprises me because I did like those songs more back then. The non-singles I feel are highlights are Gravity, Latin Simone, New Genius, Slow Country and Double Bass but the overall album feels like an experiment that's too unpolished for my taste. That's not an unfair judgment since this was Damon Albarn's new direction after years of fronting Blur. While the vision and the appeal is there, I feel that this is too much of a mixed bag between great singles, minor album tracks and less impressive bits. It's nice to know that the best idea of what Gorillaz could become came next. But hey, get the cool shoeshine still (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)
A start of something special.
I'll always be a Plastic Beach guy, the middle of the album has some skippables (Man Research (Clapper), Punk, Sound Check (Gravity) is OK). Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, 19-2000 are the highlights.
Damon Albarn, you’ve upset me in so many creative ways over the years. in other news this album really did start his twink death
I think I overpromised myself how much I was gonna like this album and it undersold my internal promise. Extra point for my prior expectations getting in the way of simply enjoy myself #TherapyWorks
Clint Eastwood is kind of all the album has. Not their best.
it was ok
the problem with a front man who has a distinct voice is no matter where he goes it sounds like his main band. even when he tries to copy Jag. some nice sounds but nothing new
Clint Eastwood is still a banger but the rest of the album just simply doesn't live up to the hype, imo.
I was disappointed to be honest. I know the singles, especially Clint Eastwood and was expecting more like that, not the maudlin filler it actually contains.
One classic single, quite a bit of filler. A Gorillaz greatest hits would be close to 5*.
Overall felt a bit repetitive with some highlights like Clint Eastwood but too many songs I would’ve skipped.
Client Eastwood and 19-2000 are cool songs. Everything is kinda trash. Man Research made me want to drive off a bridge. It’s like a 2.5. I’ll give it a 3 for having Clint Eastwood on it.
6/10 19-2000 Reminded me of Sylvie. I think she has played some of the songs for me
471/1001
Decent, had some good moments but not as good as Demon Days
Varied and weird, but a bit bloated (18 songs?!). Feels like it was made with “throw this together as a fun project” energy, rather than a serious album type of energy.
Album should have just started with "Tomorrow Comes Today" and it would have been much improved. Just kind of unfocused and uneven. "Clint Eastwood" is by far the best track here- is there a soul on Earth who doesn't love that song? Demon Days and Plastic Beach are much better records than this, unfortunately.
Still not a fan. I was always a fan of Dan the Automator and Del, but gorillaz just never did it for me. I feel like it’s kind of neither here nor there. I don’t hate it. It’s just mostly kind of boring.
Demon Days is my jam. This one, not so much
They are fun kind of silly songs, lots of good memories attached to them for sure, but its just not really my bag I don't think. Best song: Clint Eastwood, Obvs
Don’t think I’ve heard a full Gorillaz album before aside from the radio singles. It was ok.
God I love the Gorillaz but this isn't my favorite album by them – by far. I feel like it was really long and there was a lot of space where I was waiting for the next thing to catch my attention. Clint Eastwood > Double Bass is a great string of songs, but the rest of the album is nice listening but not super memorable. It was fun to listen to this album again tho. Like Gibs said its interesting how time changes how we relate to an album. Gotta remember where all these artists came from.
Visions of childhood. Like playing a skating game and just pulling off tricks to this in the background. Even today I still find the sound to still be eccentric and punchy. It’s straddling this nice in-between with an alt-rock sound and hip-hop stylings. Kazoo goes hard. The Latin track is crazy. Was not expecting that. I would say it leans harder into a four since I respect its game but my personal enjoyment where a lot of the songs kinda blended into each other left me feeling more in the middle at a 3. I think I’ll go deeper into their discography to understand where this sits in relation.
It's clearly their first album - lots of experimental tracks I wouldn't necessarily lock in to listen to again. Obvious highlights are the collaborative songs with the guest features (which later becomes an iconic part of Gorillaz music). I think that the blueprint is there and looking back it's clear they knew it too. Not to mention they were incredibly forward thinking with the features they did have on this one - Ibrahim Ferrer, Cuban jazz icon in a Gorillaz album? Again, wish I had a 3.5 here. I love Gorillaz, they live on my Mount Rushmore of music creators, and I am so impressed by where their discography went from here.
Interesting experimental release from Albarn and Dan the Automator but some of the album, but some of the tracks miss the mark.
Outside of the hits not something I’d throw on for fun, but a good album regardless. At times the experimentation grabs hold of you, and other times it loses you. I appreciate it for what it is, but wouldn’t put it in the upper echelon.
not an impressive debut, better albums were to come
3.5 j'adore gorillaz
2001 A virtual band? Whatever next... Anyway, I've had this on my shelves from releases, but I'm sad to say it doesn't get too many spins these days. The singles are immense, but the album tracks are disappointing and at 64 mins, it's a bit of a plod. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ only because I have it Noughties ★★★☆☆ (5/10)
When I was in my teens and this album came out, I loved the concept and the hit singles Clint Easteood and 19-2000 (the remix version). The videoclips were refreshing, new and cool. I loved Blur so I was happy to hear more of Damon Albarn who is the founder of this project - this time he made more of a trip hop and alternative hip hop album than their previous rock oriented music with Blur. The debut album of Gorillaz is good, but not quite there yet - it starts off well then it gets a bit dragging as all songs are quite slow and have the same tempo. I think Demon Days is their best and this is their weaker album out of the three along with Plastic Beach, but it's still worth a listen.
Way chiller and more experimental than I thought
Pretty fun over all but my favorite parts were all from Del
It was a decent album, I don’t have much to say
The joke review: “nah, dog, I don’t fuck with Beck.” The album gets better as it goes, especially thanks to Del the Funky Homosapien. It serves as a good introduction to Gorillaz, but I think they really found the way with Demon Days. Eh, I’d listen again, but maybe in background or on some overhead speakers in a coffee shop.
This album also felt boring to me. Don’t get me wrong, the entire concept of this project is AMAZING, and I love all the artists individually, but it just never “clicked” with my listening style. I was in 10th grade when Gorillaz first came out, and it was a pretty big deal. Most of my friends were huge Del Tha Funky Homosapien fans, so any project he was a part of was probably gonna be good. Top it off with anime style art and characters, plus Damon Albarn’s signature songwriting style, and it was gonna be a guaranteed success. Still, outside of the hits, it just doesn’t move me much. I wonder if this project took any inspiration from KISS’s 1998 tyrannically bad album “Psycho Circus”? Certainly the KISS characters helped influence the “man behind the mask” characters of the Gorillaz?… but more than likely, like most of the intelligent world, they probably also thought “Psycho Circus” was flaming hot garbage. They probably made this album as a response to that trash fire in an attempt to save popular rock n roll music. This is all just speculation, of course…
A solid debut album from Gorillaz. I think their best work came afterwards but there's still some good things here. It does seem like they try a lot of different sounds with this album- some which work and some which don't. There were some songs I really enjoyed and others I wanted to skip. 5.75/10 (2.875/5)
Enjoyable
- the album is interesting but not for me Likes: - the first song - the fun combined use of sounds are unique Dislikes: - sound is kinda the central theme of the album and I prefer music that I can sing along to generally - individually the songs are good but as an album they kind of blend together
Enjoyed this, its pretty unique and reminded me of some songs I used to really like
