Reviews (page 6 of 14)
Really good, chill listen. "Clint Eastwood" is the well-known standout track. 4 stars.
This is how to do a double album properly. Every song gave me something new and novel and fresh without ever losing the through line of what the band's sound is. That kind of cohesion on a debut album is bonkers! Turns out I know the song "Clint Eastwood". There was a time there on terrestrial radio you couldn't get away from that song. Fortunately it's a masterpiece so I loved it then and I love it now! Also a great example of an album where there are never really any powerhouse vocals. It's all pretty sedate therein. But they write the songs in a way where there's still a sense of contrast and rise and fall and it all adds up to a pretty damn near perfect album.
Forgot how fun this is, Blur, continued.
Gorillaz was definitely a really weird one. This album just had that acid sort of rock and rap all mixed into one and each song sounded like another kind of this stuff. And, this album is great for that. Many of the beats were really catchy and just had that kind of flow that i really love from these types of albums. I also do like how Albarn (AKA 2-D) was changing his voice to play into his character rather than just rip his voice from Blur which was his old band. Some of the songs could be repetitive or could feel very out of place or jarring but all in all, i still really enjoyed this one. Best Song: Clint Eastwood Worst Song: Punk
Catchy combo of genres. Clint Eastwood is a great song. Funny timing since we got Blur three albums ago.
Gute Klassiker, teilweise schwach.
Loved the mix of genres, and there were some interesting songs along the way. However, parts of the album were rather boring. Disappointingly so -- just not much going on. Re-hash, Clint Eastwood, Sound Check (Gravity), Rock the House as my favourites. With the exploration of different genres, it did sound a bit cheesy at times, like lowest common denominator stuff for a given genre. None other than Ibrahim Ferrer of Buena Vista fame showing up for Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) brings it up to a low 4* for me. David Albarn is a musical genius, but better things were to come from the Gorillaz. 3.6* to be exact
Clint Eastwood remains an all-timer Double Bass making me anxious, at times unbearably so Rock the House is fun 19-2000 my favourite from before M1 A1 is a strong closer love the buildup Scratching on this album is so charming, many diverse influences from hip-hop, trip-hop, punk, and electronica Overall, a great debut of which I can appreciate the impact however I think Gorillaz really hit their peak later on
Gorillaz were just so different at the time of release, when this popped up, I was looking forward to listening to this after so many years. Clint Eastwood and all the remixes of it are brilliant. I never tire of hearing it. Such a good song and sound. There are other great songs too like Punk, Sound check and Re-Hash. I like this album, but I do think Demon Days is better! I will listen to this more regularly. Favourite song: Clint Eastwood and Punk Least favourite: New genius brother Album artwork: Great cover and the artwork of the band is now stuff of legend.
The album feels like stepping into a strange dream. It's quirky, with a mix of hip hop and alternative beats. The vocals are laid-back, blending with the electronic vibe in a way that feels effortless. It has a touch of Beck's early experimental sound, but with a moodier, more animated twist. The tracks are catchy, weird in all the right ways. There's a carefree energy that pulls you along.
Incredible debut from Damon Albarn’s Gotillaz. I still remember when this came out and the first time I heard Clint Eastwood on MTV. I’ve been a fan ever since!
With his musical ingenuity, Albarn created a phenomenon even better than Blur. Gorillaz was perfect for the online world and this debut album went viral (deservedly so). Albarn set out to expand his electronica talents, added some hip-hop and even got a little multi-cultural, cementing this release in music history. Not a bad song on the album with the lesser known "Latin Simone" and "M1A1" my top tracks. Albarn/Gorillaz have not slowed down since their debut, still pumping out solid work. What's up with you my brother?...must be from another planet to keep up producing such good tunes...3.7.
Very solid debut album from my favorite band ever. It was great upon an initial listening but has only grown on me over time. A couple hits are all-timers for me and all the remaining deeper cuts are solid songs. Gorillaz get nearly constant air play from me and this album has a handful of sleeper hits that make the rotation frequently beyond this big singles. Gorillaz bring a very diverse sound that is approachable from so many angles. While the debut album is understandably not as deep as some of their future work it was clear that something special was set in motion. Damon just starts to scratch the surface of all the unique sounds that come out of his immense amount of musical collaboration and I'm here for every second of it. An aspect that needs to be discussed for anything related to Gorillaz is the accompanying artwork. Hewlett created a couple perfect caricatures for the "virtual band" that were instantly part of the band's draw. The initial music videos were creative and unique at a perfect time when MTV and music videos were still a huge part of marketing and exposure. The approach to have the live performances with animated characters included and an ongoing side-story/plot was a cool aspect to the whole project. The animation and artwork is certainly a contributing aspect of why they became my favorite band. I've consumed nearly every aspect of Gorillaz possible and still the more I hear/read/see the more I love it all. Nothing but praise for the first album that got it started, but they only got better over the next few albums. 4.3 stars
some really good tracks on here but also a good few that feel like dampened xeroxes
proprio bello. bravi bravi bravi.
oh hell yeah. not as good as demon days or plastic beach but still a very enjoyable listen
You immediately know it is them
Well, it's certainly not the best Gorillaz album, or even in the top 3. But there's something about its balls-to-the-wall, whiplash-inducing genre-hopping that remains an intriguing and strangely charming listen outside of its biggest hits. Probably more of a 3.5, but 3 seemed too low.
Great mix of talent in this record. Favorite track: Clint Eastwood other picks: 19-2000, Man Research, tomorrow comes today, rehash
Amazing
Solid. Not as diverse as some of the other albums I’ve heard from them but a nice listen.
Better than I expected.
I was generally more Blur than Oasis because by then I’d left Manchester for London although I think Noel Gallagher might be more fun to have a beer with. I liked this at the time and still do
Not what I expected, starts off very alt rock and then goes through a whole bunch of different genres. Clint Eastwood is the big hit. Some really nice laid back beats in the middle section. I think I'd have to be in the right mood to listen to this all the way through, but the production is so good I'm tempted to bump it up a notch. Other highlights: Tomorrow Comes Today, Double Bass, Rock the House.
Steady watch me navigate, a ha ha ha haaah. Although I had forgotten quite how objectionably irritating that chipmunk voice in "All Alone" is, this is actually a reasonable album. Talking of voices, Dare is probably Shaun Ryder's best ever track. You can almost enjoy the heavy synth trombone/zipper hybrid that provides the bassline. Coming in 2005, this was actually an important release. I've spoken previously about how utterly awful early-mid 2000s music was. And it really was. The music industry was reeling from its own incompetence and the mishandling of filesharing. Their approach was (instead of promoting music that was new, different and good) to simply and straightforwardly act like gigantic gaping arseholes. According to the early 2000s music industry, if someone shared an MP3 they instantly became liable for eleventy quadrillion squillion dollars, because naturally the person you shared an MP3 with would otherwise have bought that track on CD. And naturally, they'll also pass on that MP3 to five of their mates, who each in turn would pass it to five of their own mates, who also would otherwise have bought it on CD. This obviously would have deprived the poor label execs of their second, third or 38th yacht. You see, dear readers, the music industry in the early to mid 2000s was not about music. It was about suing. The Recording Industry Ass. Of America sued Limewire for... $72tn. At the time, that was roughly £48tn. More money than the combined GDP of every nation on the planet. Anyway - how the shit do Gorillaz fit into this? Well. Enter Tank Girl. No, seriously. James Hewlett and Damon Allbran shared a flat in London. Both were pretty cut up about ended relationships (I refuse to say failed :the only failed relationship is one that doesn't end when it really should) and Allbran was starting to see how bloody awful the music industry was. Pointing at manufactured bands, where soulless music execs would take hopeful performers and pipe them through the machine to make cynical dollah from easy, formulaic music - the pair decided to take the piss. Allbran had an absolutely stellar pedigree with Blur. But ideas that didn't work with Blur as a vehicle. Hewlett had a great run with Dark Star comics and a kind of a cult hit with Tank Girl. So between them, they manufactured an unquestionably manufactured band. Gorillaz. The idea was that there could be no question that it was a "virtual" band, without some photoshopped teenagers, angsty twentysomethings or, indeed, anyone at all for the music execs to milk. Of course, they did this way before 2005. This album was basically a "Yeah, fuck you. Try and make us fit your mould" to cement the success of their first album. And you know what? It kinda worked. It flew off the shelves. And the music industry started to take a few more risks. I mean, it took them years. They're still not over it. But Gorillaz definitely helped. Which can only be a good thing. The only thing that really stops this from being a true five star release is that chipmunk in "All alone".
Y'know, I just find it curious that this is the only Gorillaz album here. Or, if there can only be one (to nab a phrase), that **this** is the one that made the cut and not DEMON DAYS at least. That's not to put down the band's debut as a bad or unimportant record, but... I'unno. Maybe that's just me as a big Gorillaz fan speaking, 'cuz as someone who came into this group during the long hiatus between PLASTIC BEACH and HUMANZ... Their debut has just never been one of my favorites? Out of eight or so albums, I think I've commonly ranked this one around the middle. Maybe even towards the bottom. It's just that, with a few exceptions, this album is largely trip hop and dub. It's not my genre, exactly. Like, besides MAXINQUAYE on the trip hop side of things, I've yet to come across a trip hop or dub album I'm truly 100% negative about, but by that same token I've yet find one I'm 100% **positive** about. Which, to be fair, this probably the closet I've come, and not just because I'm a Gorillaz fangirl. I can't think of a better opener than "Re-Hash", "Tomorrow Comes Today" is of course incredible, "New Genious (Brother)" grooves hard, "Double Bass" is a nice roundabout, "Slow Country"... Well, honestly, "Slow Country" might be my favorite deep cut from any Gorillaz album. That synth line that preceeds the "Can't stand the loneliness" section—maybe my favorite moment on the entire album. Considering "Clint Eastwood" is on this same album, to this day one of the band's top five singles, that's saying something. And let's say some words about the rockers on this thing. "5/4", besides being a neat bit of... Whuzzit? Poly-meter? Mixed meter? Whatever word means that the riff is in 5/4 while the rest is in 4/4. I wish that one had gotten its video back in the day, but the fanmade version more than suffices. "Punk", meanwhile, is such an enjoyable, unintelligble goof that, heck, I can't help but love it. You'll always catch me yelling my own gibberish alongside it. As for the things that keep me from that 100% positivity... I'unno, "Latin SImon (¿Que Pasa Contigo?)" never really did it for me. It's just a little off my vibe—in Spanish **or** in English, for the record. Then you got "Starshine", which I've always found a bit too slowly and space-reverb-y for my liking. And "19-2000" is a fun single, but I've always much preferred Soulwax's "shot at a hit pop record" remix over the original. On the whole, too... Well, as I said above, this is their trip hoppiest album. Even with the rockers and the poppier bits, I don't think it has as much variety as some of their later albums. That variety, in my mind, is what makes them as great as they are: DEMON DAYS, PLASTIC BEACH, season one of SONG MACHINE... And also, they're poppier, and more often than not I tend towards that stuff? Which, y'know, this is probably a huge assumption about you, the reader, but don't take me as someone who looks up "without the rapper" mixes of these songs. I wouldn't live in a world without Del's verses on "Clint Eastwood", and neither should you. "Rock The House", even as a slightly lesser single in my mind, is way funner with Del's verses than whatever else could've been written. Similarly, as much as this isn't my favorite Gorillaz, there's a lot I love about it, and I hafta respect it for being as much as a success as it was. Enough of one, even, that it got to be in this book above DEMON DAYS. There's way more to it than Pitchfork's 7.6 would imply. It has "short-lasting, faddish appeal?" There's no way you coulda known where they'd go, mate, but come on. Murdoc, 2-D, Noodle and Russel deserve more credit than that. (And speaking of that review, I'unno why it kept confusing 2-D for Damon Albarn? I know they have similar voices, but continually insisting that Albarn's singing on this... Wasn't he busy making some opera about JOURNEY TO THE EAST at the time, anyway? Come on now. I expect better from you, Pitchfork.)
It’s a 4. I’ve never heard the debut, though I have heard Demon Days, and while I firmly think Demon Days is the better album of the two after this listen, what’s here is remarkably experimental and genre-bending for 2001 that I have to give this album a lot of flowers. Obviously, Clint Eastwood is the big star of the album, but a lot of this is really fucking good. The big thing stopping this from being within 5 territory is simply how many tracks feel a little flat or a little repetitive for my tastes; there’s not any bad tracks, but a few too many weren’t clicking for one reason or another, namely the stretch of Tracks 12 through 14, whether it’s the language barrier biting at me, not really vibing with the emptiness in a soundscape, or simply being really fucking annoyed by a never-ending sample of a cheering crowd that anchors an entire song. Yeah, Slow Country sucks, I said it. I did not like that track. Regardless of that, though, the rest of this album clicked incredibly well for me. It’s a bit repetitive in a few spots, and sometimes the beats kept droning on without much of an evolution in the sound, but I don’t think any of it really took my enjoyment away until that stretch of tracks 12-14. There’s simply too much that doesn’t vibe with my tastes to go up to a 5, but it’s absolutely no less than a 4; great fucking stuff here, and easily deserving to be on the list.
The amount of tracks on this album really brings it down to a 4 star for me. The highs are awesome. A shorter album would’ve made this an easy 5. Favs: 5:4, tomorrow comes today, Punk
Damon Albarn is a master of worldbuilding. I love this and it is just far too iconic to not be loved. There were some slower moments on this that I had never heard but I think the concept of a virtual band critiquing the mtv early 2000s vibes is too good. Rock the house 19200 Clint Eastwood Latin Simone all of these are iconic. So many genres done so well and even the instrumental tracks are so good. Demon Days is better, but this is a great debut, which is just pure Gorillaz. Damon loves these characters now, and it is awesome to see their beginnings.
A really solid album, and a unique sound.
Muy bueno
Valszleg nem ez a legjobb gorillaz album, de ez is nagyon jó.
Great album, start to finish. I did not actually the Gorillaz had been going for that long.
Pretty sick
A bit disappointed with this one. I really like some of the Gorillaz singles like "Clint Eastwood" and "19-2000". There are some other tracks that I really liked the rap in which were new to me like "Rock the House" but many of the other songs I really disliked (looking at you "Punk") My disappointment is mostly that I was expecting a 5 star album and this wasn't really it. Rather it was a mixed bag with some really good songs and some quite bad ones. Strong 3 or weak 4. Going for a weak 4 with this one.
Refreshingly different album. Never actually sat down and listened to this in whole. There's some fantastic tracks [19-2000, Clint Eastwood, Sunshine] and some that are just a bit boring, so 4 stars for me.
Great songs, tad too long to be perfect
Peak
Great album. Clint Eastwood is, of course, a certified classic.
Pretty good album to start this whole thing with. It's a little loaded, maybe a song or two could have been cut but overall I like. Favourite song was definitely the opener "Re-Hash" that shit hypes me up.
Like most folks, I wasn't cool enough to find the Gorillaz until Demon Days. I always forget how good they on on this debut. Clint Eastwood is a certified classic but 5/4, M1 A1, 19-2000, and Starshine are all bangers.
I liked it, mostly
Very good. Some downtime that could be cut out. Will I listen to again: 90%
Notable tracks: most of it.
Classic
Hmm.. yeah this is a banger 🦍
Nog swägä
Hyvä ja genrerajoja kaatava levyhän tää on. Vähän liikaa tekstien puolella käytetään aikaa Gorillaz-loreen ja musta Demon Daysillä bändi kasvo täyteen mittaansa, joten annetaan nyt vaan nelonen. DD ei taida kyllä olla listalla snif
3.5
I just had Blur a few albums ago, which I gave middling marks. So I enjoyed this way more than I was expecting too. Interesting, fun, entertaining. Not everything clicked but some of these songs really come together into something special.
Ok
Really interesting, enjoyed the experience
8/10
Really enjoyable and interesting, might need a 2nd listen to put it a 5 out of 5.
I quite enjoyed this album. Many pieces on here I managed to enjoy more second or third time around. A couple od tracks are dross, and a couple grew on me. The Wikipedia article on them was also a revelation. I had no idea of Blur being a connection. I'll listen to this again, and enjoy it again then as well. While really only worth three stars, but I've given it 4 stars because, to me, there is an element of exploring the human condition here, some interesting facets of illuminating interest were unpacked.
Delighted me today! Who knew? Lots of people, but not me.
Ok this one is hard to rate. Gorillaz are impressive by just about any metric. The art meets digital enterprise meets music is an incredible accomplishment. But the music is... weird. The lyrics are largely nonsense. This almost feels more like academic music than a mainstream album. It's definitely worth repeat listens, but more because you find something new every time than because it's actually enjoyable.
funky! classic mix of different sounds.
When Damon Albarn teamed up with Jamie Hewlitt, it changed music forever. Demon Days is Gorillaz’ masterwork, but their debut whets the appetite for genre-blending, giddy excess.
This is a re-listen for me. Like it a lot, but maybe don't absolutely love it, and I respect it even more than I like it. I've revisited select songs before including Latin Simone which I really like for some reason. And Clint Eastwood was impossible to escape when it came out.
Classic from my teens. Hard to appreciate it for what it is because by this point I've heard it so much. 3.5/5
Gorillaz I fucking loved this when it came out, I listened to it loads, but I haven’t re-visited it in years, in fact I kind of forgot it exists. I really enjoyed listening to it today though, and there was a lot of residual muscle memory to it. At the time it seemed a bit of a left turn, but 23 years later its eclecticism and slightly wonky nature now seems quite normal, both for Damon/Blur’s timeline and music in general. Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 still stand up as great bits of electronic pop/hip hop, but quite alot of the other tracks stood out to me; Re-Hash as a very Blur-esque bit of catchy pop, Tommorow Comes Today’s spaciness, New Genius’ keening circularity, Sound Check’s dubby vibes sound great, Double Bass could have been on Think Tank, a really great groove. Rock the House is great, love the horn sample. Really like the guitar line on Starshine. Always loved Slow Country, great bass sound and a nice melody. It’s definitely has a sense of a collections of atmospheric bits of music, rather than a coherent album, but I do love the different moods and sounds. It’s also much more dub influenced than I remember, which I think I appreciate more now than I did 20+ years ago. A nice fat solid 4, a great album and I need to remember to listen to it more often ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Gorillaz good AF
Me gusta este disco, pero no lo escucho frecuentemente. Clint Eastwood es un temazo
I fully believe that the Gorillaz must be polarizing. Some people must not get them at all, and others, like me, are big fans. I think it would be essential to be good with all things electronic and move towards trip hop and move towards electo-pop without finding it all to jarring. For me it works. For others, IDK? This is one of those albums that I find very satisfying and it shows the absolute huge range this band can operate in. The only reason I will not give this album five stars is because I don't know if it is my favorite album of theirs. I will have to spend the time determining which one is, or not... But this is really good stuff people!
Really nice sequencing of songs, creative and just a vibe. Not a perfect album but great for sure. Loved this when it came out and it stands up. Could even be 4.5
FAVO: Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Man research, Double Bass, Rock the house,19-2000, Latin Simone
I liked it more each time I listened to it. It definitely gets stronger after the first songs.
Rock alternativo. Un megahit. Un 4.
Truly a masterpiece. More than 20 years later and this album still feels fresh, and brings me such joy. Giving a rare four stars to this one.
As much time as I've spent with Plastic Beach, I was really looking forward to this one, but it didn't really strike me off the bat. Will probably give it a few more tries, since it does have the same genre bending backing and intelligent verse as in the later album.
Elska þetta grúv.
Cool and chill.
It is a sick and heinous crime that Deltron 3030 is not on this list, but I can find a quantum of solace in knowing Del the Funky Homosapien, Dan the Automator, and Kid Koala’s immense talents are integral to the successful debut of Damon Albarn’s most interesting project.
I listened to this album a lot back in high school and to this day I still enjoy it. Maybe my judgement is clouded by nostalgia, but I think this is a fantastic album. While it might not be the best Gorillaz album, I think it has some of their best songs. 9/10 Would I listen again? I do frequently!
I was enamored with this album when it came out. Listening to it again - I wasn't quite as impressed as I remember being back in the day. Still, they did something pretty unique here. And a lot of these tracks (especially the ones with Del) really held up well.
Always liked Gorillaz but never listed to an album all the way through. Damon Albarn is super creative and I love that he found this little niche, it's right in my wheelhouse. Finally a post-2000 album that belongs to be on this list!
Awesome record , although it may sound like a less cohesive record . or even a bit messy. This may be a decisive factor to someone but i feel it adds to the appeal of the record and even that of the band, be it a big part of their personazlity.
Every time I saw that a Gorillaz track was released, I knew it would be fun. And so was this album. There's this unique mix of sincere writing coupled with a kind of tongue-in-cheek attitude. Brilliant.
Very nice to hear! I forget how lo fi Gorillaz can be. Absolute fusion and nicely experimental at times. A very interesting listen. Just fucking cool too
damn this is from 2001?! I’m old asf.
I regret not getting this on vinyl when I had the opportunity
This album really was a game changer. It didn’t fit in precisely with anything else at the time. The guy from Blur is starting a band where he casts himself as a cartoon ape? And it’s kind of electronic-driven? And Del shows up on a track to rap? Awesome. Always love a listen.
More than moderately cool but as with all things Albarn-y, it's a little self-impressed and too clever for its own good. Saying it's better than the Monkees or the Archies isn't a very high bar, now is it? There are more than a few class-a grooves and beats (one's favorite might be "Left-Handed Suzuki"). Thought it has held up pretty well, and feels more larky than kitschy and even seems a bit better than Blur overall, one has to force oneself to give it a 4.
Classic - such a great assortments of songs and amazing lyrics. Would listen to this on repeat. Even the hits dont get tiresome.
I enjoyed it. Rock the house probably my favourite track. Singles are good, the rest quite forgettable. Probably cultural significance a big part here. For me later gorillaz a lot better listening. The two remixes at the end are better than the originals
Was not expecting absence of rapping until Clint Eastwood and have a renewed perspective of this song in context of the whole album. Very surprising how little Del there is outside the singles. I guess I knew the Gorillaz hits but hadn’t listened much outside of Plastic Beach. This album sounds more like trip hop Blur than what I expected. Standouts like “Double Bass” are more Dan the Automator focused than I knew the band got to.
Sjovt genlyt.
Delightfully all over the place. Weird but fun with some real great songs in there. Enjoyed it front to back for the most part.
Pretty cool album 👍
meglio cracker island
Partly heard before Saved 10/15 (11/18) Top track: Clint Eastwood
Suck on this Britpop detractors, Albarn's the king
Sounds like drugs. Some great ideas. I wonder how good it could have been without the drugs. I don’t like it when he does funny voices. Favorite song: slow country
some classics
Not as great as I remember it. The top songs are amazing and it's not bad by any stretch, but there's a lot in here that's a little generic and repetitive. Still a good listen.
I have listened to this record many times. I had a six CD player that I would play while working on my hobbies and this was one of the records that stayed in the player for a long time.
Great album by a great band. This only gets a four though cause it's not plastic beach, and Damon Albarn is a wanker
Day 4/1001. Flat 4. I HAD heard of Gorillaz before today lol, in fact, they’re on my list to do a discography dive, but this was my intro into their work. Let me say, i’m definitely a fan. This was hard, and i love the groups art style too. My favorite track was “sound check”.
Bien.
Great memories
Re-Hash shows signs of the sonic identity of Gorillaz whereas not fully developed. Lyrics are weak too. 5/4 experiments with time signatures in a very interesting way but is vocally weak as well. Tomorrow Comes Today is the first strong tune on this record. New Genius (Brother) is weak. Clint Eastwood is their biggest hit by far on this album and it combines the Gorillaz sound very nicely with rap. It's easy to see why the Gorillaz-style with decent lyricism becomes a hit. Man Research has nice instrumentals ruined by the ya-ya-ya. On Punk they do a punk song very well but infuse it with Gorillaz-elements. Sound Check (Gravity) is sonically very good but with weak lyrics. Double Bass has nice bass. Rock the House again shows the versatility of Gorillaz and how they are comfortable in many styles. 19-2000 is very fun, bubbly (literally) track. Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) is a good track. Starshine manages to weave a spacey-soundscape. Slow Country is good. The instrumentals are as good as any on this album but this track is lyrically stronger. M1 A1 is a strong end to the album. Very strong debut album, shows amazing versatility but some filler songs. 4/5
I rate the chill vibes, great listen :)
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
It's been years since I've listened to this album and I forgot how much I enjoyed it. Solid album from beginning to end.
the Gorillaz are fun. I usually listen to Demon Days but this album has some great songs on it (Clint Eastwood, 19-2000). There is some filler on this one and songs that aren't that great (M1 A1 I usually skip).
I knew that Clint tune but not many of the others. Quite enjoyed overall.
I used to think this was the bees knees, I wasn't as hyped on it now, but the Clint Eastwood remix is still a banger.
Clint Eastwood och rock the house är bäst. Riktigt sköna. Clint är väl.möjligen sönderspelad. lite stökigt skiva i övrigt, men jag gillade den då och gillar den nu!
This was the debut album of Damon Albarn’s cartoon band, and in some ways they have outgrown the popularity of Blur. The appeal of Gorillaz can be drawn to how wide and varied the styles they can play, taking influence from alternative rock to trip hop and in-between. Tracks can take on a range of emotions from the melancholic “Tomorrow Comes Today” to the energetic “Punk”. The few guest appearances feel inspired such as Del the Funky Homosapien rapping on “Clint Eastwood” and “Rock the House”, as well as Ibrahim Ferrer’s cadence on “Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)”. One’s enjoyment of this album can be attributed to how well they can tolerate the experimentation going on throughout this record, as well as Damon’s voice through his cartoon persona 2D. Because on some tracks like “Man Research (Clapper)” and “Sound Check (Gravity)” where he’s going into his high registers, it can make or break your experience. Still, it’s an overall fun time.
great album carrying a mark of the times in sound and general feel. perfect use of sampling
Underrated one-hit wonder.
Excellent. This album reopened my ears to good music after a five year hiatus. Meaning my first two kids. I remember listening to this music with them when they were young and we all liked it equally.
4/5⭐️ Best song: 19-2000 Worst song: Double Bass Comments: Gorillaz are so cool B) Damon Albarn’s second best band fr
I Love this album. Not a HUGE Gorillaz fan but I do love listening to them. They are such a vibe and this album is so good.
This really brings me back to college, walking around campus with my iPod. Relevance to this list: 5/5 Personal enjoyment: 4/5
Clint Eastwood 🔥, der Rest durchwachsen. Gutes Genremix
This is one of my Favourite gorillaz albums
I like this record even though it’s from a genre I hardly ever listen to. But I had forgotten about it, but listening to it makes me remember how fascinated I was with this music when it came out. And then when it was revealed who was behind it was more or less a chock to me. Now I can’t belive I didn’t hear it from the first listen. It has some really good tracks and it is a record I can listen to again without feeling the need to skip tracks. 4
I went back and forth on this, but I think it’s a 4. “Clint Eastwood” is still really solid. There are a couple tracks that you just want to end, but overall this was a very good listen.
A good listen, but some songs can overstay their welcome.
Honestly great way to start this off, clever mix of genres and sounds
Solid album, not usually my genre but I did enjoy this one a lot. Nice variety in songs and keeps a steady flow throughout the album. Favourite songs: - Re-Hash - Clint Eastwood - 19-2000
3,5
Gotta love the variety here. The songs are so different but work together pretty well. It's unavoidable that some will be much better than others, but it's an enjoyable listen. I think they balance out quality and variety a bit better on some later albums, but it's kinda crazy that the first release for this project is so good.
A wildly diverse album, there is something for everyone here — the flip side to that is that you’re going to have to have an insane breadth of musical appreciation to like everything that’s on offer. The virtual band concept is a brilliant, yet almost inevitable response to approaching the millennium. A struggle to appreciate the body of work without engaging the external content is the real downside here. Del’s tracks are all stand outs, he was made for this moment. Very strong 4. Favorite tracks: Clint Eastwood, Sound Check (Gravity), Rock the House
Not typically been a big fan of Gorillaz but enjoyed this. 2Mello/JSR vibes.
Great listen, experimental and poppy at the same time.
I really enjoyed the different styles of music that were strewn across that whole album. One minute I am listening to hip-hop and the next some sort of alternative rock. Some awesome beats and mixing was sprinkled in there in between songs which was a cool way to show the variety. I especially liked Double Bass as an instrumental. 19-2000 and Clint Eastwood have been in my library for many many years but it was very nice to hear some more from Gorillaz. High 4
What a great debut album-much props to Dan the Automator and Albarn!
Gorilñaz
Liked it a lot. Will give it another listen.
Great example of early 2000s music, mixing rap, rock, jazz, maybe the beginning of lo-fi hip-hop. Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, and Rock the House were hits at the time. Definitely an album that changed the way music sounded in the early 2000s. Very enjoyable listen
It's pretty good, great debut
Fuck ya
Hard to come up with bigger hit in the last 20 years than Clint Eastwood. The rest of the album has beat demo vibes but Del shines every chance he gets.
Great 100th album to have for this list. Shout out to Emma, this is one of her favorite Gorillaz records and we’ve gone back and forth on this vs. Plastic Beach for a while. I think the best thing about this album is how it sets a good listening atmosphere. Some of the lyrics aren’t immediately intelligible, there’s a lot of lofi sounds, classic drumloop samples (like to a DJ Shadow extent), and there’s a bit of a punk/postpunk influence (literally the song Punk on here). This isn’t nearly as clean or tight as almost every mainline Gorillaz album after it, but that doesn’t detract from it! It’s a good easy listen with some HITS sprinkled in
They get a bit wild with these songs at times, which makes for a super fun listen. There are a few tracks where they just make a bunch of noises, and they're fine, but I definitely prefer the more conventional songs on here. I don't fully understand the concept of Gorillaz, but there are definitely multiple genres present in their music that work together in an interesting way.
Never listened to a Gorillaz album before, but have had plenty of times where I heard a cool track and thought, "hey, what's this?" and it turned out to be Gorillaz. Definitely enjoyed this album - it's just very cool. I like the vibe. I don't know much about the virtual band concept, but I dig the music. Not the most amazing thing in the world, but I would definitely revisit. Favorite tracks: Re-Hash, Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, M1 A1.
Bangers
Bien.
I love the gorillaz. Had never listened to this album all the way through it was fun
Schon geil
Some bangers on here
Classic
I kinda miss the style of earlier albums like this and demon days. This is an amazing album. When I first listened to this album in the day my favourite track was Clint Eastwood, later it became rock the house. These days it is a count flip between double bass and tomorrow comes today. Low 4.
Been a while since listening to to this album in its entirety. This one is tough, because it's hard to objectively rank, taking it for what it is, while also knowing what was coming down the pike. It's eclectic and refreshing, but never finds it's personality. This could be a feature, not a bug, but there's a lack of cohesion because of songs like 'Punk' that just feel out of place, lackluster and very (maybe intentionally) methodic. Overall, this album still hit me like a ton of bricks in 2001. I remember bopping my head to '19-2000' and saying "get the cool shoeshine" (no idea to this day if those are the actual words) in the shower while getting ready for high-school. 'Clint Eastwood' was everywhere and I was absolutely okay with that. Del's animated delivery on 'Rock the House' is epically cool and somehow steals the light from that epic flute. The fact this album had any impact on me at all, during a time when I was a self-righteous, gate-keeping metal head/punk rocker means there was something here to be enjoyed. I can't leave half stars, but if I could, I'd complain that I can't leave quarter stars, but if I could, I'd give this a 3.75. But I can't. So 4/5.
I have heard the album before, and liked all the songs I could remember, but it didn't have any lost gems that would have pushed this to a 5
Really doesn't sound 23 years old, really enjoyable listen, I have got 3 later gorillaz albums and knew the 2 main singles but enjoyed listening to this
I really like this!
Вещь определённо культовая, но не знаю, в какой-то момент начало как-то тяжеловато идти
I enjoy the Gorillaz and this album is a quintessential example of early 2000s rock evolution. Killer album!
It's a funny one, this is. It's got a real mixture of 'edgy Blur' mixed with rap, then the absolute bangers they released as singles, Clint Eastwood and 19-2000. Clint Eastwood is a sick tune and always will be. My 4 star rating is based on the bangers rather than the more missable album filter tracks. Plus I liked the gimmick of them being an 'animated' band when they first came out!
Nostalgia
I like a bit of Gorillaz, but haven’t really listened to any full albums, since Demon Days was the most have album of Year 7 though. Enjoyed this, Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 are absolute tooons. Simpsons reference: No. Which is a shame the virtual characters could literally star in an episode.
I know and like this album a lot.
Brings back memories. Good
joya
They put together some hits, but not everything is great.
Gorilla
It was nostalgic
Sign of an era.
Really great listen, been years, forgot what a vibe this is. Sucker for anything with a melodica
Honestly probably a 3.5 but ill give it the benefit of the doubt.
It’s a great album, a dub and hip-hop classic that introduced me and a lot of the indie crowd to this kind of music through Damon Albarn’s connection. Really enjoyed having another listen. Although there are one or two odd experimental tracks that prevent it from being a perfect 5, it’s a very comfortable 4 and a half.
It's good. reminds me of the years after high school
1/16/24
not something I would listen to regularly
First time actually listening to Gorillaz. Didn't expect to enjoy this, but I did. Great variety of styles. I like the atmosphere and the method of blending the sound wall. The vocals are great. Will listen to other albums.
🐒
Damn I love Gorillaz and this album is a major reason why. All the songs are great not just Clint Eastwood.

This album was really good! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I only really knew of Feel Good Inc before listening to this so I was surprised at how different it all sounds. Nearly every instrumental is incredibly unique and catchy. I think this has the record for most songs added to the playlist. Will definitely listen again!
You can dissect almost every instrument in the beat, each member of the group putting a show altogether that flows into a beautiful masterpiece. Very experimental for its time, jazzy beats and hip hop combined with an interesting alternative rhythm.
Loved it!
What is there to be said it sounds like demon days unpolished nonconept big brother. Very good
Very eclectic album and fun to listen to with some great musicianship and unique sounds
Tomorrow Comes Today - like the harmonica parts. And the iconic Damon Albarn vocals.
Amazing Broski its rlly good good songs band named after kinda monkey also helps it
Their songs can really get you into a groove
Some of the best Gorillaz songs are on this album but I think listening to this generator has corrupted my mind because there were a few songs where I only heard “Blur”. So, now I have to lower it by a couple of points because I hated “Blur”. There were a few new songs on here that I haven’t heard before and I really enjoyed because how weird and unusual they were. 8/10
Really good but not my top 3 of Gorillaz albums, of course there are really good hits here but also a ton of skippable tracks that aren't bad but forgettable. Bring on the better Gorillaz. 8/10
Loved a majority of the songs
Decent. 7/10
Bien.
Bien.
Great album. Groundbreaking when it came out. Feel Good Inc and Clint Eastwood are clear standouts. 4/5 only because Demon Days is that much better
pretty much anything damon albarn has worked on ends up being incredible, gorillaz were so innnovative for their time, love the concept of this band, not all these songs are bangers tho ngl
I cant decide if 4 or 5 stars. Some really iconic songs, some i don’t care for. But solid
Surprised myself that I'd never listened to this entire album. Pretty fun all around, just not something I'd go crazy for either
there is other gorillaz I like more but fundamentally I just love their sound. Clint Eastwood is a longtime fav (a whole star just for that song tbh) but also love sound check, 19-2000
It has its ups and downs, but mostly ups. And great experimental performance and idea.
Very good album. Heard it a few times already, but on this listen, I think it’s not *quite* as good as I remembered. I still really like it though, and found some tracks I totally under appreciated before, like Punk and Sound Check. Plenty of classic songs here, and a couple here and there that are harder to get through. And while it’s not my favourite version, I like the alternate mix of Clint Eastwood at the end. Overall just a really good album. 8/10 Top 5: 1. M1 A1 2. Clint Eastwood 3. Rock the House 4. New Genius (Brother) 5. Starshine
4 Voices and vices combine for a worthwhile album experience. Not gonna love every song, but that’s not the point of this music. Repetitive lyrics and beats taken to some extremes—but both are catchy and reward multiple listens. Simple here means stripped down. In a good to the point way.
Managed to be ahead of its time, which is no easy feat past the year 2000. Some classic songs on here but is a bit unpolished. Damon was still finding his feet with this project at the time, and you can pick up on this when comparing to later albums
4.3 - going into to this I thought it was going to drag and grate on me. I was very wrong, I actually found it so much more refreshing. Definitely deserves its place on the list
Re-hash

gorillaz was really big when i was in middle school (showing my age) and for better or worse, gorillaz reminds me of middle school. i think it's a fun evolution of rock music that combines elements of hip hop. is it mind blowing at this point in time? not really. but is it fun? yeah kinda!
amei todas
I forgot Gorillaz even existed... Definitely listened to this in my youth, and I honestly don't know what I think of it now. It feels very dated, but in kind of a good way?
Great album. Big swing, interesting, good vibes. Single version of 19-2000 is better than the album version. Good though 4/5
Favorite Songs: Clint Eastwood Even tho Clint Eastwood ist the only Song from the Album that really catched me, it is overall a fun and interesting listen. Really surprisingly complex.
Caught up in a conflict between the brain and the tail.
it's the music that we choose
Obvious passion project, but I thought it went on a little too long. Hope to see the other albums on this list, though.
Top notch Brit trip dub hop
An awesomely fun record. Light and breezy and solid pop tunes. A quirk of this record is one of the few ever good albums that have a slow start but then escalate to a mouth fizz bomb of pleasure by the end of it.
It still boggles the mind that Gorillaz is Damon Alburn’s claim to fame in America (well, that and Song 2), and that what seems like a one-off side project would turn into a long running series of albums under the Gorillaz moniker. In 2001 my music buddy Jeremy and I bonded over this album— it hit that sweet spot in the middle where his hip hop interests and my indie rock obsession met. To him it was a new album produced by Automator (and even featured his Deltron 3030 collaborator on two tracks), and to me it was a new project by the guy from Blur. (Did we both already like Cibbo Matto at that point? I think so? That was another bonding point.) Anyway, as Jeremy convinced me that rap is awesome and provided me with an important education in hip hop, this album helped ease me into a world of discovery. Thank you, Gorillaz and Jeremy. These days we don’t see much of each other, but you made a big impact on my life and there will always be a special place for you in my heart.
I’ve always loved Clint Eastwood and liked 19-2000 but never fully listened to this album so I was excited to get it. It’s not music I would really listen to a lot on my own but would still enjoy if I happened to hear a song here or there, if that makes sense. 5/4 and tomorrow comes today were pretty good but overall I didn’t come out of this with new tracks I enjoyed in the same way I enjoy Clint Eastwood.
Still sounding good!
Solid album. Clint Eastwood, Sound Check (Gravity), and Latin Simone are my faves. I do think I like Plastic Beach better than this album though. 4/5
Brilliant!
Found a new band to listen to. Lots of fun.
Fav new discoveries: Latin Simone, Slow Country it‘s alright, not an album I‘d listen to every day bc the songs are too depressing without the energy to compensate for it
2nd album out of… 20? that features non-white people. this list needs to do better
You know what? I realised during this listen that I have never listened to a Gorillaz album before. I know loads of songs and sing along quite easily, but an album, nah, never. I also remembered that Del was in this group. Hell's yeah. Loving it. This is a moment in time. E Enjoyable to say the least.
A good vibe overall. I wish there were more artists like this
great!
3.7/5 - Need to revisit again, and probably six times after that. Even 20someting years later the Gorillaz seem like such a breath of fresh air. Theyre making music i dont know how to label, and damn theyre good at it. theyre self-titled is one of many bangers, but a few duds. It comes across as them still finding a sound for themselves. Which I am so so so glad they did. Such a fun album that subtly underlines the absurdity of the sounds of the 90s as they come into the 21st century of music.
this album made my brother quit his job
Lovee some Gorillaz. Not their best album, but still great.
It's ok, not as strong as follow up
Banger
After the first third of this album, I was marvelling at how overlooked it is. However, then there is a real lull of mediocre songs between Clint Eastwood and 19-2000. Overall its a very inventive project, especially due to the genre fusion and "virtual band" idea. It's somewhere between an 3 and a 4 for me, overshadowed by Demon Days (rightly so). I'll say a 4 based on the strength and impact of the singles.
Like the sound but a little long for me
Interesting album. Definitely different with some good tunes other than the famous Clint Eastwood song. Damon Albarn is a great songwriter.
This was the most RAW gorillaz album you can listen to. Super experimental lots of great bangers. Not their best album but most definitely a bop. It was super fun to listen to their first album and then listening to their newer stuff and seeing how they have evolved over time
Gorillaz one of my favorite bands and Demon Days one of my favorites albums. This one is good but not quite as good as DD
chill mais bizarre en même temps
moknkey
I’ve never listened to the album. Pretty good but not one I’d put on very often. Fun to hear Damon experimenting
Damn, I remember when this came out it was such a big deal. The guy from Blur started a band of cartoon characters with the guy that made Tank Girl. I thought that was a cool concept, and the music was great. I remember playing a little flash game where you ran across a graveyard as Noodle! It was so modern and fresh! Introduced me to Del’s intelligent style of rapping and Deltron3030 which I still love. Opening track is so unassuming. Chill, lazy song. 5/4 getting a little more Blur. Tomorrow Comes Today is a really good one, opens like a good Beck song! Again those lazy vocals that were a whole vibe. Clint Eastwood was fucking huge. That’s obviously how I heard about them, a friend described the video and opening verse lyrics; I was intrigued. Something very new! Man Research isn’t much. Punk is kind of fun for variety and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Sound Check is a surprise. Dig the baseline, sampling and strings! Like the vocals too. Almost a dub / trip hop vibe. Double Bass reminds me of a Tortoise song almost. Pretty slick interlude. Del’s back on Rock the House which is a bit of a throwback hip hop song. Dig it. 19-2000 was one of my favorites! Fun, catchy chill jam. Great album.
Like I've said on other reviews here Gorillaz are one of those bands where if I was able to make a greatest hits I'd probably be able to give it a 5 star rating. However, while doing many great things this self titled has just a bit too much "filler" for me to rate it so highly. Don't misunderstand me though there are some great songs on here. Tomorrow Comes Today has managed to find its way onto many playlists of mine over the years. I don't usually seek this album out but I'll definitely be returning to it at some point or another.
Several melodic repetitive songs sprinkled with a few hits.
Gode minder, 40 år siden jeg har hørt den sidst. Pissefed, men måske også lidt for lang.
“That’s The Second Album I Ever Bought!”
Love the coolness of the keyboard accompanied by the unconventional vocals. Ace of an album.
I'm happy, feeling glad
Not their best album, but great album nonetheless!
Thought it wouldn't hold up. But still really enjoyed it. That said, not sure if I enjoy it because it's great, or just because it was so formative for me.
I loved this album when it came out. Probably one of the last dozen or so CDs I ever bought before going totally digital. Would have given it a solid 4 or 5 back in the day. A lot of the songs still rank high but don't have the same appeal anymore. This is like a 3.5 rounded up.
Great album for its time.
Solid listen the whole way through. First half has more standouts and grooves.
The highs are very high and the lows are mid
Tad long, but most of it’s great
getukuuu, getukuu shushaaa
I’ve heard a lot of these songs so much that this listening felt a bit blah. But it’s an amazing album regardless.
Another classic, fills me with nostalgia! Loved the video for 19/2000 and the game that went along with it online. Have listened in its entirety many times
Very good
Such an enjoyable nostalgic listen 3.5/5
This one brought me way back to being a little kid again and my brother playing me the music he was into. Though the songwriting, production, and features continued to grow and shine more as the albums went on, this is still a damn solid debut. Slick and quirky, with some delicious verses from Del. Light four for this one. Fave track: 19-2000
Clint Eastwood. C’mon.
I only knew "Clint Eastwood" and even that sounded better than I remembered. Anyway, while I am aware of the cultural status that this record has, I wasn't really old enough to appreciate it as I was in kindergarten at the time. So I was going into this with pretty fresh ears. While the album started dragging a little towards the end, I did enjoy the overall groove.
Loved
Only knew a few tracks off this album, so giving it a complete listen was tons of fun. Absolutely solid, great songs all the way through, and a unique, cohesive sound.
Favourite tracks: 5/4; Clint Eastwood; Re-hash; M1A1; Rock the House; 19-2000; Sound check
This was fine, enjoyable well done and unique.
This album blew me away when it first came out, and it holds up. Blur was all well and good, but Gorillaz allowed Damon Albarn to stretch his creative wings, and it never hurts to have Del the Funky Homosapien on the roster. "Clint Eastwood" is the track most people will recognize, but "Rock the House" is my favorite of the bunch; I love the '70s game show vibe, and the track prominently features Del, so what's not to love? Giving this 4 stars, but it's closer to 4.5, I think.
Fantastic. Some of this still sounds fresh today, and I enjoyed the trip down memory lane with their classics. I particularly enjoyed the ambient tracks. Well done. 4.5 stars.
Innovation counts
So chill. I like
This one takes me back! I fell in love with Gorillaz in my teens. The upcoming 2 albums were great as well. A cool mix of hip hop meets pop meets synths, great collaborations which only became more in the present (too many if you ask me). I’m sad to see what Gorillaz has grown into, but those first 3 records are still spun on frequent basis! 8,5 out of 10
Fucking great. Love their sound, feel like it was pretty ground breaking at the time (2001), but I'm not sure. Definitely some bangers in there (Clint Eastwood), and some good variety. I need to give it a few more listens to really get a feel for it. But I just love their sound, aesthetic.
Close to a 5 for the originality and uniqueness of the tunes, highlighted in Latin Simone, Sound check, Client Eastwood (both versions). etc.
Very eclectic. Blur frontman’s anything goes multimedia project - unleashing the shackles of anyone telling Damon what he can and can’t do. Mostly hip-hop beats, but a bit of almost anything added to electronica and alt-rock and even some Latin. Comparable to Beck with clearer singing. Half is good. The singles definitely work well. History shows the project was a success. So I’ll round up to Four for genuine fashion and cultural influence and chart busting hits.
Good stuff, not always the vibe but when it is it IS
I used to love Gorillaz. What happened now? Why the same album didn't sound the same anymore?
When this album came out there was a flash game where you drove the jeep from the cover around on a 3d map while 19-2000 played on loop; it was pretty cool for what it was, but was glitchy as hell. I wonder if there's a way to play it anymore - probably not.
Classic early-noughties’ record whose best feature is the level of music contamination and genre-bending. Most importantly, it is fun AF. It does not get more than a 4/5 because the concept of ‘Gorillaz’ as a band still felt a little gimmicky and the album never reaches the peaks of ‘Demon Days’. Fav tracks: Tomorrow Comes Today, Sound Check (Gravity)
Cool alternative rock, positive energy. Intelligent arrangements 👍🏻🎵
Solid album. I’ve always liked the Gorillaz, but I haven’t heard most of the songs off this album before. I do prefer their more recent stuff. 4/5
Good background and good for kidz.
Solid album, I enjoyed it
I heard Gorlillaz not too long after the album was released, and have been a fan of the band since the beginning. My introduction to the band was their video for "19-2000" and I thought the remix was catchy and it got me curious. I like Blur, so additional work from Damon Albarn was intriguing. It's been a while since I've listened to the full album, but many of the tracks are in my regular rotation. "Clint Eastwood" and "19-2000" are probably my top favorites, but it was good to get reminded about "Re-Hash", "Tomorrow Comes Today", "5/4", and "Rock the House". I don't like everything from Gorillaz, but I will probably always be ready to hear any new music they put out to find my new favorites.
Ovo je klasik, sa mnogo dobrih stvari, ali opet...ima i čoraka
For what seems to be a rock experimental album I enjoyed lots of the sounds that were produced throughout. The lyrics seem to not have much significance other then displaying vocal ranges as instruments of their own. Reminds me a little bit of Nirvana in the lyricism or lack there of. Overall, the album feels like interesting and digestible background noise that is reminiscent of the early 2000's. Fun Note: Released on the first day on the new century Jan. 1 2001
Overall a really nice album. Some prods are a bit less innovative than other but other really shine. Favorite Tracks : Clint Eastwood, Latin Simone, 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today Rating : Big 3.75 / 5
Cool album. More instrumental than I originally thought. Nothing too crazy however and some lack of cohesion between songs took me off sometime.... Definitly some HUGE bangers on it pushing it slightly towards a 4
I think in the context of just listening to an album of music, the idea of a virtual band gets a little lost. But it certainly adds to the story. I appreciate that Damon Albarn really has taken his art in so many places in so many ways. I don't always love it, but that's maybe not the point here. He's not one for the tried and true. So this scores higher in "let's try some interesting things" than in "I can't wait to listen again!"
This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard. Love
Good
Genieten en zeker clint eastwood. Maar het mist nog iets om die 5 te geven imo
Very enjoyable album. A bunch of highlights along with a couple of filler tracks. Basically, when Albarn is singing leads - that's when the album shines most.
They hit every genre in the book on this album
- an insane variety of sounds and influences from all different genres - I don't vibe with the Gorillaz as much as I wish I did, but the music is always fun - High quality music, 3.5 but I'll round up
