Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Ehhhh kind of a banger
A classic rock album, although you can hear the bluesy, country influences which give it depth. Although not my favourite genre of music, I can appreciate it! This album does make me wanna wear flare jeans and line dance in cowboy boots lol
Snelle inhaal review #14: Als je de beste nummers zou pakken van dit album, zou het echt een goed album kunnen zijn, nu staat er naar mijn gevoel iets te veel filler op.
Geen grote rolling stones fan maar dit was wel aardig
It’s the Rolling Stones. What can you say? They’ve never been my personal favorite but hard to argue with the quality. Don’t think this is their best work though.
such a strong beginning and end. not a huge fan of the middle
Meh. The Rolling Stones have never really connected for me. It’s fine. It’s also way too long and nothing really sticks apart from Tumbling Dice. It’s not bad. It’s just there. Which feels like a weird thing to say about an album this widely heralded and famous.
Meh too twangy. It's not bad. Just not what I care for.
It all shares the same vibes divided in subsections given the different sides of the vinyl, Shine a light is the highlight of the project, will need more listens to fully grasp the rest of the material.
Not as good as Let it Bleed, but better than Beggar's Banquet. Kinda made me second-guess finally "getting" the Stones.
Blues rock, standard Stones stuff with country and gospel vibes in places. Didnt do much for me Best track - Torn and Frayed, Shine A Light 3 stars
I dunno, not really my think I think. Fine as these things go.
I find the Rolling Stones to be an odd band, in that every album has a single or two that are quite good, but the rest of the songs are mid at best and some are downright bad. Of course, it's hard to write consistently great songs for so long and you have to give them a lot of credit for having at least some hits on every album for 50 years. (Not in the last 10 or 20 as far as I know, though) This album is in their heyday and is always celebrated as groundbreaking. But almost all of the songs I find to be kind of same-y. Sure one's a little more country than blues, but it's still pretty close. The singles are good: Happy, Tumbling Dice, even Sweet Virginia. I'd listen if they came on. Perhaps these are the ones with a different producer?? Turd On The Run is horrible and Torn and Frayed grates on me. All of the rest are ok, like fine as background music or if I were at a bar and the band was playing these songs, it'd be fine, but I wouldn't throw money at them.
I like the blues, I like rock, and I like quite a few Rolling Stones songs, but this album, while okay, didn't meet the hype.
Kult men ganske standard
Not their best work. Bit too Americana
A blues bar jam essentially, nice sound overall but nothing in particular jumps out as outstanding. Rolling Stones continue to be a great singles band only in my opinion 3.5*
I have pretty fond memories of this one. Couple songs I know are bangers but don’t remember too much else. Definitely didn’t remember how stripped down this is. It works. The brass works extremely well here. Deeefffinitely drags on toward the end. Pretty sick cover Rocks off is a solid starter, rip this joint kinda boring. Eh, kinda fun. Today is the day I found out ZZ Top ripped off the stones. Granted zz took it to another gear, and the stones probably ripped off someone else. Tumbling dice and sweet Virginia are great. Ventilator blues is a good one. Shine a light is the best song here. Easy.
Solid
I keep listening to the stones hoping that it will grab me, but this album didn’t again. It’s not bad, it’s just not moving me the way the Beatles did.
Meh. I thought I would love it, but I came out disappointed. It's not bad, but I thought it would be a great Stones album. It's not
Every time I think I can set aside the problematicness of the Stones, I hear a song that reminds me of just how bad they can be. The album is too long, there are some great tracks, but some that should really be left in annals of history
I feel like in my head The Rolling Stones sound a lot different than they do when I actually listen to them
Надуха ми главата
My biggest issue with the Stones is that they never did learn how to trim the fat.
I kinda expected to like this more since I do enjoy rock so much more. This seemed more bluesy almost folk than rock to me, which surprised me since I’m used to the typical stones hits.
🧓🏻
Not my favorite Stones album. There’s two types of Stones songs, one type has heavy blue riffs with a gritty swampy sound and the other is more hook heavy rock, I prefer the latter. The songs Happy and Tumbling Dice represents everything I love about the Stones while songs like Casino Boogie do not.
Sounds like classic rolling Stones. Nothing super catchy, but I imagine if you're a fan of the band it would've satisfied the itch for new music
Life OST and yes I would still buy this album even for one single great song, like Tumbling Dice. They were never that cool, and yes they can be awesome and boring at the same time. This album is way too long and it should never be listened on earphones.
I repeat myself: The Stones Work as a Singles and collection band. Their proper records never make Iit for me. While this might be their most consistent record, it still contains too much uninteresting fillers. I secretely know this won't BE the last of such ratings here...
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mythic group, but only doing, sometimes well, what is already existing
Quelques chansons sympa mais ça tourne en rond
Really good
This was an established and competent Rolling Stones making passible yet unremarkable music. Truth of the matter is that they are clearly capable of making hit songs yet this album is mediocre and quickly vanished into, however decent, simply background music. 3/5
It's fine. But honestly, it doesn't particularly stand out. I mean... There are the one or two or even three standout singles, but there are 18 tracks here. It doesn't give me much reason to revisit it again, honestly. It also begs - again - the question why there are so many Stones albums on this list. It's like the authors want to convince people that the Stones are/were more than what we've seen of them in the 80s. Honestly, though - Let It Bleed and Beggars' Banquet (both also on this list) make that point much more convincingly than this... Okayyys collection of songs.
Never listened to the stones. It felt as normal background music
Exile on Main Street is a funny one for me. I'm not the biggest Rolling Stones fan, but appreciate this album for it's significance in their discography. I didn't hate listening to the album, not it was very much background music for me. Tumbling Dice is obviously a popular song and I liked that one the most but I think overall, it got quite tiring to listening to. Very repetitive, which is maybe listening to it after it's 50-odd years of existence and with a modern perspective, but wasn't the most thrilling listen. Fine for background though.
It was fine. The Rolling Stones have some absolute bangers in their catalogue, but this album didn't hit those highs. It was well executed, albeit quite generic, blues rock. Fine, but nothing I'll want to go back to.
Lmao the other top reviews as of writing this are all 2s and 3s. I have to agree. The whole album was pretty samey. I don’t particularly like Mick Jagger’s voice either. Which is interesting, because I can’t think of any popular artists today who have unpleasant vocal performances. Maybe in 30-40 years I’ll eat these words.
GREAT energy and spirit. Feels like it brings their blues side more to the fore in this album. Very enjoyable but quite long as it’s a double album and probably got used to the 30-40min albums so far. But enough variety and energy to stay engaged. Close to 4, but maybe just misses out and 3.5
Not bad but I'd much rather just listen to the artists that they've, shall we say, "paid homage" to.
These guys are English you say? They sure sound American. And they're white? You don't say. Look. I don't know what to make of this. I mean, everyone of a certain age has heard of this, but do they like it? I guess they do, but I don't know if people would like it as much these days. I like some Rolling Stones as much as the next guy, but this is pure nostalgia fest from a time when competition was slim and people were starved for entertainment. (Could make the same excuse for Morrissey, but then, he's a C*$#.) Three stars.
While I know this is a popular album it doesn’t do much for me. I recognize the musicianship but the album is a let down for me.
Not interested
Ofmetið. Tumbling Dice og Shine a Light er alveg topp lög. Restin er bara ekki að ná mér. Of mikið americana. Stundum í stuði fyrir það en ekki í gær.
Aldrei skilið hæpið í kringum þessa plötu, reynt nokkrum sinnum. Ég er líklega merira rokk en blús. Nokkur góð lög.
The album definitely began to shine brighter in the second half, especially with the song "Shine a Light" which was likely the favorite song of the album. As a first listen of Rolling Stones, this definitely didn't disappoint but also didn't completely blow you away given the aura and acclaim around the band. Will give this a 3.5/5 and bumping it to 3, as it didn't quite hit the heights of other albums here.
Solidly good, but I'd hesitate to call it great. There are no memorable hits or exceptional songs despite the album's popularity. Not their best work, but it's still The Rolling Stones.
Not a bad album for sure, but I feel like there are much better stones albums that could be on this list. I'm starting to recognize that pattern with this list.
Not bad, just boring.
Exile On Main Street is an album that i had a hard time keeping up with. I am mostly just going to blame it on it's length and the fact that there isn't all too much variation on the formula. The songs tended to flip-flop between two formulas, one being a more country like style and the other being a harder, more rock and roll style and that lasted for about an hour. I don't think that this album is bad, far from it actually, the music is pretty good especially from the latter formula and the vocals are also really good hear as well. I just wish that it were cut down a bit. This may be another album where I'm struggling to find a favorite and least favorite song due to them being overly similar to each other. It's not bad, i just wish it wasn't so long. Best Song: Stop Breaking Down Worst Song: Sweet Virginia
3/5
Solid album if you’re into bluesy rock. Had a few lulls but overall not bad. Rocks Off, Torn and Frayed, and Tumbling Dice were highlights.
I wanted to really like it, I mean it’s the stones! It was but ok.
Enjoyed the album. Never gonna complain when the Stones are playing, but also not much stood out as being particularly great.
I never really got the rolling stones hype. This album didn't change that for me. Nothing wrong with it but it's not blowing my hair back either
Nothing spectacular but I enjoyed this more than I expected to.
kinda forgettable tbh. perhaps i wasn’t paying enough attention to fully grasp the album. it was okay. would probably rate a 3/5 since i didn’t dislike any of it.
Great band. Not their best album. 3
A bluesy Stones' album. Reminds me of going to an American dive bar where people are playing pool while smoking.
Aika perus rollari meno, vähän rauhallisempaa kuin mitä odotin. Rentoa ja ihan perus hyvää. Parhaat: Ventilator Blues, Let It Loose
The Rolling Stones are a band everyone has heard of. I've always had them categorized as 'ok but not my thing' so it's hard to see past that. I thought the straight up blues rock songs were all filler. There were a handful of songs that I liked a lot despite not wanting to like them. Mick Jagger is just such a friggin weirdo. But there is some good stuff here even if I'll probably not go back to it much.
I think this is number four of six Rolling Stones albums in the collection, so more than halfway through our allotment of Stones now. I'm not all that familiar with their discography, but I *did* recognize the album title, so that seemed promising, although I was surprised scanning the song list that there weren't many obvious Rolling Stones classics listed aside from "Tumbling Dice". And as I listened to this long dive into the Stones' version of American rock-n-roll, I was kind of disappointed with the album, largely because of all the accolades I was reading about how it was reassessed as their best album several years after it was released. As I listened to track after track of largely similar bluesy-rock (and grateful for a few deviations, like "Sweet Virginia", "Sweet black angel" and "Let it loose"), I thought of Paul McCartney's dismissive critique that the Stones were a "blues cover band", and thought that this album perhaps help justify to him this unfair caricature. It probably says something that Mick Jagger said just after the album was released that he was himself bored with rock & roll; I found the album kind of boring in a way that I haven't found other Stones albums in this collection so far, and I didn't put months of sweat and effort into it. (I also agree with Jagger's later criticism of how poorly mixed the album was, largely the result of more than half of the band/producers constantly abusing drugs during the recording; the 2010 remastered version definitely helps, but still.) But I also like it that this was clearly Keith Richards' labor of love, down to his lead take on "Happy".
2.5/5
Against all the odds I enjoyed this quite a bit. Liked the mix of Blues, gospel and rock. Standout tracks were Rocks Off and Tumbling Dice but there were also some mediocre tracks too. It’s the Stones I don’t really see the appeal but it was better than I thought it would be
Некоторые треки показались довольно интересными, но конец какой-то нудный. Слишком продолжительный альбом, так что могу поставить только 6 баллов из 10.
They really found a sound and stuck to it for an hour but at least it was quite a good sound they went with, though still could do with a bit of variety. 3 stars
This is pretty good. No stand outs but a general feel of rocky nostalgia from my early years of listening to The Stones
I guess I was expecting this to really blow me away, since I'd always heard it spoken of as a really important, excellent album. I can see how it was influential, but I just didn't find it that interesting. It felt like the same sound all the way through.
This is my second hearing the album and I think I enjoyed it more than the first time. It’s a fine album throughout and it’s definitely got a consistent sound, but I feel that it doesn’t offer much more than that. Maybe it’ll grow on me but for now there’s nothing too striking to me, so it’s hard to rate it anything more than a 7/10. Simply a collection of rock songs.
I definitely believe that this had its time and was very important in its day. It still feels like important listening. I just think we’ve largely outgrown this sound, but that’s a good thing! Progression is good. We can still respect the history.
Bluesy rock'n'roll, not feeling it
It's a good Rolling Stones album. A few great songs and a few meh. Nothing to be upset by, but nothing stands out as Holy Shit this is amazing.
meh
Pretty good stuff but not my favorite of their work
Is this their American blues cover band era? Or have they always borrowed heavily from the blues?
A few standout great songs - I forgot I love all down the line! :) It just felt very unfocused and bloated?
I love The Rolling Stones but this is not their best album.
6/10 I feel like I’m with the majority of some on this site where I don’t see the hype of the stones, at least when you see publication websites rate them one of the greatest of all time. While this is their most consistent album and my favorite song is on it, 18 tracks is too much for an album in my opinion. Tracks started to blend together, nothing too offensive though Favorite Track: *Let it Loose*
Cool bluesy rock album
I have never been a big fan of 70s era Rolling Stones. I think it has something to do with the slide guitar, too much piano, saxophone, harmonica, Mick constantly screaming, the black female back up singers, etc., etc. Each element on its own might be fine but all together and it’s too much. At times it seems all a bit too cacophonous. And frankly some of their songs give me a headache. This album, however, has me thinking differently about them. Some of those elements also exist on this album but more than anything I find them to be really just rocking the fuck out on this one. I feel like it’s part homage to American soul, R&B, gospel, blues, funk. And part middle finger to the American music status quo. Like they’re saying, hey fuck you we can do this too and even better than you! Again, another classic album that I have never heard before. In fact, I think there might’ve been only one song on this album that I had heard before (Tumbling Dice). 18 songs on one of the most famous Rolling Stones albums and I only know one song, I’ve got some work to do. I can’t wait to give this one another listen and really get into it. *loved: Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Loving Cup, Ventilator Blues, Shine a Light
Good album, a lot of the roughness that I like about the Stones. The general sound feels more American than the rest of their work. It's not exactly my style, but it's an interesting span of blues into rock. I think Tumbling Dice is my favorite of the bunch.
High 3, almost a 4, arguably a 4, torn.
Okay, more background music than a classic
For what?
solidno
I've heard this before but never managed to get into it. Fun in parts, boring in others. Realise I don't like Jagger"s voice much is their blues stuff. It's very long too. 2.5 would have been my preference.
3.5 if that were an option
This is a weird album. It sounds like the rolling stones having a drunken party that lasts too long and nothing is coherent enough to be a memorable hit. Then I read about it and that is exactly what happened. Loads of drugs, loads of session musicians etc. It's not bad, it's just not great and it's long. Apparently everyone who slated it loves it 10 years later, so ask me again in 2035.
The musicianship is awesome, love the inclusion of all the various instruments, but I just don't like Mick Jagger's voice.
Enjoyed having it on and Rocks off and Shine a Light stood out for me. A little bit long overall though and couldn't give it my full attention for the whole album 3.5.
A classic album, 15 years before I was born. I would love to have listened to it with 16 years in 72', to feel the raw impact on the music scene and the contrast of their sound, but I got to listened to it with 38 years as an musical archeologist. This period of 60 to 75 is a blessed collection of pearls and golden necklaces you can wear at any occasion.
not the same "zip" as their newer stuff.
Good.
The Rolling Stones and me just aren't really happening.
3.5
Decent
It's fine. No song really stood out to me that much, though. Just sounded like The Rolling Stones. Bang average.
The bluesy songs a pretty boring to me. I did enjoy the sound of the more rock and roll stuff.
can't get the fruit
As is so often the case with double albums, this does not really earn its length. Whilst clearly very well put together, I struggled to find a standout track and everything felt a tad ... inauthentic? Like they were trying a just bit too hard to sound bluesy, but lacking the conviction to really sell it. Perfectly fine to listen to, but it failed to be memorable in any way.
Good, but not their best.
Good
Very blues and rock n roll. The classic Jagger vocals and Richards guitar licks. Happy is a track with vocals by Richards which is rare. Rip This Joint is up tempo. Shake Your Hips has that Mississippi Delta feel. All Down The Line a good track, guitar, rock n roll.
Listened. Overall a good album, I liked that it was upbeat and there were a few songs I really enjoyed. However I would say it's not my cup of tea as a whole, so not an album I would be actively listening to again, but I'm glad to have listened to it.
A long album, with not all tracks hitting. I like their take on the bluesy stuff. Can really see how it influenced some of the later rock that came after it. Not sure how often I'll revisit this but glad I've listened to it as I have not given the Rolling Stones a proper listen.
The third Rolling Stones album so far. From my experience with the other two, I'm not really expecting much. Some decent but kind of basic to today's standard rock and roll tracks, played and performed very well, but not leaving much of a lasting impression. Going to guess there's some content on here that hasn't aged well. Gonna say I reacted quite negatively to the runtime, will probably drag a bit. Wish I was a bigger fan of this band than I am. I see people glazing them all the time, but I just don't see what others see in them. Hoping to be convincedt this time around. Rocks Off Definitely recognizeable as a Stone's song. The piano is pretty alright. The production makes the song sound a bit unclear. The horns is something I could do without. Would say that the chorus remains my favourite part of the song, it's probably it's most memorable asset in my eyes. Doesn't exaclty strike me as very memorable, but fine for what it is. Fine. 3/5 Rip This Joint Fast paced rock and roll track with a saxophone solo. The vocal performance is pretty fun, though the track itself isn't that interesting. Each element has a lot of polish to it, but the track lacks memorable moments. Fine. 3/5 Shake Your Hips Bluesy. Hollow, boring, lacking in any sort of payoff. Energy drain. Bland. 2/5 Casino Boogie Stereotypical white blues rock. Lacking any sort of personality or soul. Goes on and on without ever building to anything. Tired, sluggish tempo. Uninspiring sax solo. Not bad, just very very boring. Was probably cool for the time, but not to my taste. Did not like. 2/5 Tumbling Dice Chorus has some personality to it. The backing vocals has some playful energy as well. Smooth guitar sound. Also enjoy the bassline quite a bit. Definitely the catchiest track so far. Decent. 3.5/5 Sweet Virginia Opens pretty well. Awful vocal effect. The vocals are straight up terrible, regardless of the effect. Sounds drunk and half asleep. The sax has a pretty nice tone. The backing vocals carry this song out of disaster territory. Average. 2.5/5 Torn and Frayed Agressively average rock song. Just gives me absolutely nothing. It's pleasant to listen to, but goes in one ear and out the other. Zzzzz. Average. 2.5/5 Sweet Black Angel Yikes. Yikes. Yikes. Who listens to this shit? Beyond dogshit. Not even worth discussing. 1/5 Loving Cup The instrumental builds pretty well upon itself. Grows larger and more intense as the song goes in. There are some interesting instrumental fills here and there. Fine. 3/5 Happy Filler. Does not need to exist. 2/5 Turd on the Run One of the songs of all time. Out of all songs ever written this is definitely one that exists. Has a single harmonica part worth mentioning. Boring. 2/5 Ventilator Blues That guitar riff drains every ounce of energy from my body. Annoying. 2/5 I Just Want To See His Face You can't seriously expect me to believe that this couldn't have been cut to reduce the already bloated runtime. Tries to build atmosphere, but ends up just sounding muddled and unintelligable. Waste of time. 1.5/5 Let it Loose I find the instrumental mostly pleasant. Has a slight dreamy vibe to it due to the reverby keyboard. The piano grounds the track adding some impact to the floatiness of the keyboard. The horns kinda ruin the vibe, really crass and loud. Hate the vocals, really whiny and all over the place. The backing vocals clutter the track, making it even more disjointed than it already was. Did not like. 2/5 All Down The Line Has some good energy, the tempo and the uncaring attitude enhance the party like feel. Decent guitar solo. The chorus works well as a sort of anthemic rock and roll dance sing along. Decent. 3.5/5 Stop Breaking Down Predictable but charismatic blues rock track, with a swinging attitude and a good amount of swagger. Has some sprawling guitar moments that add some complexity to the track. Nothing spectacular, but does the job with a lot of quality. Good. 4/5 Shine a Light Really greatful that it picked up after that extremely melancholic intro. Won't say it's great. The backing vocals are really cheese. Instrumentally it's very much of its time, though I can't say I dislike it fully. The guitar solo is pretty great. And the generally dated gospel homage has its charms. I find the mix of piano and organ to create a decent amount of depth to the track. Grew on me. 3.5/5 Soul Survivor Rambly and aimless. Keeps up the same sound as the rest of the album which is really tired at this point. Does not feel like a closer. Average. 2.5/5 A bloated slog of an album which ended up feeling even longer than it did thanks to many similar sounding songs with no real space to process anything. Again I have failed in my quest to understand the hype behind this band, again feeling underwhelmed and extremely drained by the end of one of their albums. To me it just sounds extremely average, delivering a classic rock sound which today has been played out so much it becomes cliche. Sure it might've been innovative at the time, but to my ears other subgenres of rock music are infintely more interesting than this. I would say the quality on display here is impressive, both technically and in their performances, remaining consistent throughout, but it doesn't help when I'm not entertained by it. The length doesn't help. Could probably cut four or five tracks from the tracklist with no issue. Over all the Stones continue to disappoint. 2.5/5 leaning more towards 3/5. Fave track. Stop Breaking Down Least fave track. Sweet Black Angel
Similar to the Beatles
While I dind't felt bored listening to this album, I certainly was left not wanting to return. This is not a bad album, not at all, as it is filled with some nice jams and performance. But this style doesn't really do anything for me. People who loves rock and blues, may find this album great, but not for me.
Rating: 3/5 | Favorite Track: Rocks Off --- This project is certainly making me realize that I do not like roots rock whatsoever. There is almost nothing on this album that grabs my attention.
Energetic and enthusiastic. Perhaps a little too much for me right now. The album is fine as a whole, but none of the individual songs really stood out for me.
обычный хороший большой альбом ровных песен
Not my favourite of their albums, feels like a lot of same-y 12 bar blues
This album is fine. I've had to listen to it at least 3 times to get through the whole thing and feel motivated to actually rate it though. For that, I have to knock it down a bit. It's a british band's take on rock and roll + the blues. Again, it's fine, but I think other RS albums are much more important to listen to. Best Songs: Sweet Virginia, Shine A Light Worst Songs: I Just Want To See His Face, All Down The Line
Not a huge Rolling Stones fan. Classics on it but not something I’ll revisit
So apparently this is their album where they went wild by locking themselves in a mansion doing drugs or something. Well, Sabbath did the same with much better results.
6/10. Like it's alright. A very pleasant blues rock album from the seventies with coarse vocals and some catchy riffs. But that's it, didn't change my life tbh.
Exile On Meh Street I had such high expectations for Turn On The Run saved slightly by the excellent Shine A Light
.
It was ok. I think my favorites were Let It Loose and shine a light. Kinda wondered which was the single because none of them really stuck out to me as single material.
Well, after I eventually found this album on you tube. (The first one you got is some electronic album with all the same track names). It did exactly what it says on the can. It's standard Stones fare, ok but nothing to write home about. The only track worth a special mention is when they covered La Grange by ZZ Top, which of course they didn't, and it was called Shake Your Hips. Gobsmackingly enough, it came out the year before the ZZ Top classic too. Other than that just a standard album.
It’s ok. Considering it’s always featured in any ‘best album’ list you’d care to look at it, it’s not great! Got some catchy guitar hooks and some decent bluesyness here and there, but by no means a classic album. ‘Tumbling Dice’ and ‘Soul Survivor’ the stand outs for me.
Bluesy rock. That’s what it is.
Fantastic album. Simon and Garfunkel can go from this slow and whispering almost haunting vibe in songs like Old Friends to explosive sing-alongs in mrs. Robinson. Lots to explore here. Notable song: Fakin’ it
I have always been very vocal about my assertion that The Rolling Stones are overrated. I've said that they only have two good songs: Sympathy for the Devil and Paint it Black. That said, I think most of this album is fairly new to me. Some of it is far more Blues-inspired than their more mainstream music. I like the Blues stuff, but if I'm going to experience Blues I will go to the source and listen to some authentic delta blues from the likes of Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. There's nothing wrong with the Stones' rendition, it's just not where I go for that style. Their more conventional rock songs on this album do the same thing that most of Rolling Stones songs do for me... not much. They just don't inspire me. And whoa boy.. the runtime of this double album certainly makes it overstay any welcome it started with.
Pet favs: Shake Your Hips (Slim Harpo); Sweet Virginia; Stop Breaking Down (Robert Johnson) The Rolling Stones are fine. They have some great songs but I've always thought their reputation exceeds their grasp. Mick Jagger is no singer and should not be demonstrating this defect on songs like 'Let It Loose'. He's fine enough when he stays in his narrow lane. This album is too long but still listenable without being tedious. It's too messy in parts. (It's recording history reads like a rolling disaster.) I know I'm supposed to like this album, like this band, and accept it without argument. I won't. I await another RS album listen to change my mind because this one ain't going to do it.
I don't like The Rolling Stones, but nice album
Ok the Stones a basically a blue band but I think I expected more from this famous album. There's a lot of standard blues here. I didn't find it a creative as the previous few albums.
It's not bad nor is it good perfect for background music. Nothing grabs your attention in a good or bad way.
MID
Still not a huge Stones fan, although I liked this album as a whole better than Let It Bleed. You can hear this album's influence everywhere, from La Grange by ZZ Top to Shania Twain. Overall though, solid, just wasn't blown away.
This album definitely had some good songs, but I think none of them really spoke to me
Not the best stones album imo. Still quite solid 3.5
3 stars
The style of this album doesn't really suit me as a listener. The country and gospel elements are off-putting. It's not terrible - it lands somewhere between meh and annoying.
3.0 - Ok
naja, da ist aber noch sehr viel Luft nach oben
It's a very solid rock album and glad I listened to it. That being said, it's not one I would choose to listen to often.
A nuria le rechiflo porque es rockera, a jaime meh
Exile On Main Street is a good overall listen, but nothing really stands out or rises above the rest. The album rolls along with a loose, bluesy vibe, making it solid background rock music. It’s gritty, it’s raw, and it’s got that signature Stones sounds, but it never quite hits a high point that demands attention.
Good Stones. Very Bluesy.
Rocks Off: I like the psychedelic-sounding break in it. The lyrics are kind of funny even though the song is about heroin use. Rip This Joint: Very fast-paced, not as sure about this one. Ok actually I like the saxophone solo. Shake Your Hips: So this song is actually a cover from blues artist Slim Harpo. I really like this one, the guitar is the highlight. And of course the harmonica. Casino Boogie: This one's an easy listen, pretty basic, but I like the way they came up with the lyrics, by writing phrases on paper and then cutting them up and sticking them together. That's so fun. Tumbling Dice: About a promiscuous gambler, and their only major hit from the album. Lyrically I enjoy how the dice theme is threaded throughout the whole song, I think that's really creative. Sweet Virginia: A country-inspired track. His voice sounds really far away, which I think reflects the hazy, drug-induced atmosphere at the time of recording. Harmonica and guitar are great. Torn and Frayed: Another easy listen, I like the instrumental break in the middle. Enjoyable, not very memorable though. Guitar in outro is satisfying. Sweet Black Angel: The percussion/instrumentation in this one is really interesting and works well with the guitar.
Classic blues album. Cohesive, fits together beginning to end.
For one of the greatest rock bands of all time they sure like to play the blues. I've always heard that they and alot of other bands from the era juts stole the blues and I finally get it. It's nothing but blues. There is track that I'm assuming zz top took. There is another track where mick jagger sounds like he's attempting to do Dylan. What a wild time where everything just flowed into and out of everything else. I'm sure today isn't any different but I don't have 50 years of progress to see it at the moment. Good nice album though. Nothing too crazy but it's solid
The Stones keep doing this "funky Americana" thing, vacillating between Gospel, Soul, straight blues, country, bluegrass... I mean, it's good, the band is tight but spontaneous (for the most part - I think they play up the sloppiness a bit to the detriment of the tunes), Keith Richards is always excellent. But it's more of the same since they started, this one has a little more orchestration. They're kind of poseurs, though. I guess they were the original Blues Poseurs™. Paves the way for a lot of fairly mediocre stuff to come later like the Black Crowes and Creed. Doesn't suck but a bit long.
Best Stones album on the list so far. After the first two tracks I was convinced er dere talking about a classic, but the Shake Your Hips happened and they went back to their normal selves with some great songs and a lot of filler. Apart from the mentioned tracks, I really enjoyed Sweet Black Angel and Shine a Light. 6/10.
Pretty good; But didn't leave a crazy impression on me
I feel very conflicted about this album. The first half is very country rock and samey, not bad but forgettable. The second half is some of the best rocking Rolling Stones I've heard. This did not need to be a double album; sides C & D are so much better than A & B. Classic case of less is more, but still all around solid. Top tracks: Ventilator Blues, Let It Loose, Soul Survivor
Probably pretty groundbreaking for the time. Much more piano and brass than expected. Listened 2/24
Good but not great in my opinion.
Interesting. Not for me, but cool
Don't understand the hype behind this band, first time listener and it was alright. Growing up you hear a bunch of names thrown around of all time greatest bands, and the rolling stones are consistently among the highest ranked. With this album and sound, I just couldn't see it, its good, but not great sounding to me.
Pleasant enough listen. The album seems to start with its Hard Rock bangers and then proceeds to transition into more Country-esque songs. There are some nice tracks on here but I find Rolling Stones albums to be really lacking without their hits. It feels (and sort of is) more of a compilation of non single and non album tracks from the past years. Nice to listen to but god knows how this ever came to be one of the best albums of all time.
Good vibe
I thought the recording process behind this album was interesting, and I liked the murky, dense, and unpolished feel of the sound. It gives the album a unique character compared to their more polished records. That said, The Rolling Stones have always felt like a pretty middle of the road band to me. They have some individual tracks I really like, but overall, they don’t stand out much.
charming, yet forgettable
Good album! A lot of stuff sounded like the same song but it was groovy.
Good mix of blues, country, rock and Gospel The highs are not too high, but the lows are not too low Trumpet is good Jagger singing sounds good, but always the same
I was kind of bored.
I would give this a higher vote if I could understand the singer lol. I've always struggled to make out what the lead singer was mumbling.
It's okay! I don't have to love this just because people say this is the best rock band of all time. It's perfectly average to me, and I probably won't hear any of these songs again. They're not hits, and that's okay.
Roadhouse blues songs. Feels like they phoned in the album to appease their base.
An alright album, good background noise but wouldn’t choose to listen to it
Decent but not my favorite Stones album as its overly bluesy. I honestly think its a bit too long and boring at times. I like Sweet Virginia and Soul Survivor the most.
good old rolling stones
A breath of fresh aid after all the prog rock and self-indulgent folk music on the list. I imagine people in the 70s welcomed it too. 'Tumbling Dice' is a good song. I liked 'Torn and Frayed' too.
I liked this more than the other Stones record I've encountered on this list, but overall it felt too long; there's only so much Rolling Stones I wanna listen to in a sitting. Tumbling Dice and Torn And Frayed stood out to me, and most of the rest was fine. 3 stars.
You can hear their Blues roots in this album, and you can hear a large variety of influences as well as those that they've influenced. Aside from that there's not really much to take from it. I didn't find it particularly exciting and although I won't say unenjoyable I will say a bit "samey". Mediocre for me.
Started really strongly and it's nice to have a solid, reliable band back on my playing. Lost a little excitement, perhaps not quite enough here to warrant a double and I don't see this as a masterpiece but the Stones are establishing themselves as a favourite band of mine on sheer volume of good stuff, even if I do find the albums a little filler heavy
I'm not sure what I was expecting out of this album but it exceeded my expectations slightly, at least. Especially surprised to find, given that this appears to be one of the Stones' better-known albums, that I don't recognize a single song from it.
More bluesy than I'd expected. Tumbling dice was the only song I recognized. Will listen again.
Sounds ok, still i hardly dig this band
Decent stones album and I like the stones 7/10
I wasn't familiar with this Rolling Stones album, and after listening to it I can see I wasn't missing much. It's bluesy and unpolished and kinda folksy with a gospel-rock vibe, and usually I'd dig an album like that, but this one just didn't connect with me. It's also much too long. By the 40 minute mark I was ready to be done, but then I would have missed Shine A Light, which is my favorite song from this one.
It was ok, but certainly not my favorite stones album. Songs were ok one at a time but not a lot of distinction. Basically an album of deep cuts. I think this appeals to the hardcore stones fan but I'm good with a greatest hits album and skipping the filler.
Some great rock and roll classics on this one, but also some stuff that I just can’t get into.
I don't have any strong feelings about this album either way. I enjoyed it while I was listening to it, but once it was over, I couldn't really remember anything that stood out. It didn't sound like a 52 year old record, and the fact that the Stones are still an entity today is impressive.
The more albums that I'm listening to from The Rolling Stones, the more I'm becoming a fan. It's easy listening music, which can be both a pro and a con. There's nothing "exciting" in terms of their songs (at least from this album), but there's also not a lot of bad other than nit picks here and there. This is kind of a jam out record. Put it on, crack open a cold one, and sit on a rocking chair on the front porch on a summer night. That's the vibe.
Good, but very long.
First? 3,5 /5 Again? 2/5
So honky tonk! Mick's fake southern drawl!
actual classic rock and roll is not something i ever listen to anymore. when i was younger and developing my own music taste i listened to the rolling stones but to be honest, i've grown out of them. it’s good just not something i’d choose to listen to on my own.
Most solid Rolling Stones album I've heard until now. No duds, but also no hits. It achieves the perfect blend of enjoyable and unobtrusive, meaning that it fades into the background easily enough without ever becoming boring. That's why I can forgive the running time of over an hour. Nevertheless, I won't take away any lasting impression and would have preferred a more hit or miss album.
3/5
Some of the best Stones songs I’ve heard but ultimately it all started bleeding together. Way too long
sehr energetisch und roh und schwitzig
i liked the jazzier songs
I'm actually not sure I know too much about this album despite having listened to a decent amount of the Stones. Post listen, this album is a bit all over the place just in a general musical sense. There's soul, blues, and plenty of country influence in their rock here. While that SOUNDS versatile, it tends to get a bit boggy and repetitive here. There are a few gems here ("Tumbling Dice", "Happy"), but none of the massive singles that I was expecting. I guess this is the result you get after a manic recording process (plenty of drugs, tax evasion and the lot).
This is not my favourite Rolling Stones album, but it is very decent with good songwriting.
It's... fine? There are no songs I care much about on here, but this is substantially better than the two Stones albums I gave a 2. Between how bad G. Love was yesterday and the improvement over the other albums I'll round this 2.5 up to 3. The title is kinda cool in a means nothing so sorta actually kinda dumb way. The album is unimpressive. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
This is one of the good ones, that’s for sure. How many good ones are there? I don’t know. But I’m sure they’re all on this list and then some. One thing I was struck by here: the coolest thing about this album was the horns. I wonder which of the Stones played the horns? I wonder if there’s some pattern here, re: the best parts of the best Stones material.
Some good tracks on the album but not my favourite.
Confirms my suspicion that the Stones are actually at their best when not playing rock music. I like the bluesy and country vibes on this album. Standout track is “Sweet Virginia”
The Rolling Stones seem to find a consistent groove on this LP as they play their way through blues, rock, and country inspired cuts. It’s a solid project that has some toe tappers, but I really didn’t feel deeply connected to much of what I listened to here. A little disappointing considering the group itself is so heralded.
Was ok as background music and wasn't as bad as the most famous songs.
Not their best
American country western inspired British blues/Chicago blues inspired Top Mick Jagger performances Great groove based performances Tumbling Dice Sweet Virginia 7/10
Oh yeah. Good jam time record you know. To quote from the apple music editorial description - "More than songs or performances, 1972’s Exile on Main St. was about mood." I could imagine myself putting this album on again in the background but not a big intentional listen for me and no real standout tracks for a playlist. Notably Tumbling Dice is one of the only songs on the apple music version of the "This Is Rolling Stones" playlist. Just not a lot of standout songs on here imo but a pleasant listen. 6.5? 7? 6? Who cares.
Fun and bluesy at times, some sections sound messy to me though
Fine album, don't really like the Stones that much, but it was a fine listen. More bluesy than I expected.
Some great. Some good. Some meh. Seems like old Rolling Stones doesn't connect much with me, but it's still...not bad.
I’m not a huge stones fan, and not much of a blues rock fan either, but there were a few familiar songs on this album and some unfamiliar tracks that I liked.
Solid rockplatta, inget extraordinärt. 6/10
Got some good stuff on here. also has some not so good stuff. But still worth the listen!
Do not love, do not hate. The Stones rarely stink my imagination for some reason.
Although a good album, people say it their best work. I feel the stones are overated and after their blues early days have only made a few good songs although they have released 20 albums. They are like the british aerosmith in terms of career. Great at the beginning, some really crapp y stuff, a few good hits 20 years after, a lot of crap after those few hits. They are really good live and they ha e great energy, but the music overall is meh. This is one of the best albums but I dont think its the best.
A few cool songs, but honestly way too much meat and potatoes old school rock and roll. Why this album is so highly regarded is beyond me. You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Paint it Black, and Sympathy for the Devil are just a few songs that are miles better and came out before.
exciting classic
Yup okay it's Exile on Main Street I guess.
Loving Cup es una gran canción. La añadí a mis me gusta. Algun que otro tema me pareció interesante (Shine a Light). Por lo demás me encontré deseando que termine. No puedo estar más aburrido del blues y eso que voy escuchando poco.
General quality was great - Nothing stuck out as being amazing though.
Was good without actually having anything jump out at me
A pretty enjoyable disc 1, but good lord above does disc 2 feel like treading water. Happy and Shine a Light are good, but that's about all I can remember; side C was genuinely a blur for me. If I could split the scores, I'd give disc 1 a 4/5 and disc 2 a 2/5, so I guess that evens out to a 3. Maybe if I break up the discs on a relisten, it'll go down easier, but for now, this just felt like too much of the same thing. I'm already rather lukewarm on the Stones, and having to listen to over an hour of their material was a lot to ask-- that being said, I did genuinely warm up to them after the first couple songs, before, again, tanking.
Blues-y as hell. "Loving Cup" probably my favorite out of the bunch.
Couldn’t really make out the lyrics but good distinct tunes.
Standard, classic and falling exactly where RS music generally hits me.
its cool music, but its too old for me.
Feels important, lyrics not so much my style. 7/10
Is this the same song being played for an hour and a bit? Never did really “get” The Stones to be honest. OK they did some great tunes but not on this album!
Proves to me the Stones always were mid. They were perfectly mediocre. This was an okay album but nothing special or innovative.
Some good tracks but not my favourite stones album by far
Very standard and quite long
Wow this album is long. Don't get me wrong, I love The Rolling Stones, but fuck me, over an hour? I had to listen to this in two chunks. Maybe I'm a normie Rolling Stones fan, but where are the HITS. Again, another album where a lot of the songs sound the same, they could have easily cut this thing in half and it'd be much more listenable in one piece. Still, good music on here, it just gets very tired after the half way point. Definitely taking songs out of here for my playlists, but I'm rating the album as a whole sit through listen, so I can't rate it too favourably based on that.
Pretty groovy and fun album overall. But it did run its course with a lull towards the end Highlights - Rocks off, Rip this joint, sweet Virginia, ventilator blues Lowlights - casino boogie, tumbling dice
Some really great songs but gets bogged down by some less forgettable ones. I wanted to love this one too :(
The blues and rock n roll as done by a bunch of British guys. Fine I guess.
It’s a fun sound, but it’s long and most of the tracks sound very similar.
It was okay.
Great band, yes I know, but the album is pretty mediocre imo.
Pretty average and very American.
I didn't have time to listen to the whole thing, and tbh a lot of it kinda blended together with no big standouts. This was my third Stones album already on this list and the latest one yet, 1972 (prev 1968 and 1966). The tracks mostly sounded like classic examples of their fav genres- blues, boogie woogie, rock n roll. Appreciated the tracks with brass and backup vocals the most. 2.9/5
Overall a good album, and interesting none of the big hits were on here. They really have a good rock, folk, and roll vibe. Its almost 1950's and country at times but really upping the rock vibe. Sweet Virginia was my favorite and Tom and Frayed and All Down the Line were seconds. Shake Your Hips sounded just like they covered ZZ Top, but actually ZZ Top stole it from RS who covered it from Sim Harpo and he was not even the first. I didn't appreciate the second half as much because it got long, especially Let it Lose.
This is the first full RS album I think I’ve ever listened to. I really liked all the instruments in it, but the vocals were kind of weird to me. It was hard to understand a lot of them and they got kinda lost sometimes. The first half of the album was super solid, the second half had a “is this over yet?” vibe. Stuck between a 3 and 4.
this was alright, i liked some songs but a lot of the album just dragged. not really my favorite type of music anyway…
It was okay. No song really stood out. Some of their other albums are a lot better.
This double album is a bit indulgent. I prefer "Beggars Banquet" and several other records over this one.
Not the best stones album but some excellent tunes on here
Enjoyable.
One thing the 1001 albums generator has taught me so far is that I'm not too keen on The Rolling Stones
Good album to have in the background while you're carving pumpkins. Does feel a bit bloated.
It's fine, I guess. 🤷
Honestly I’ve never been a big fan of the Stones, which is blasphemy in my house. It was a little too honky tonk. Good sound though.
A solid Rolling Stones album but should by no means ever be ranked above albums like Between the Buttons, Sitcky Fingers, Their Satanic Majesties Request, and Let It Bleed are all definitely better in my opinion. It’s far too bloated and while its sound is good, it doesn’t warrant a tracklist as long as this has
mooi album... vooral eerste helft is goed, daarna beetje 13 in een dozijn zou 3,5 zijn, maar helaas, ik rond altijd af naar beneden
Still don't think Mick Jagger has a nice voice. At its best during the jams. Without having heard their other albums, this might be a more soul-like addition? Might revisit.
Listened to this album expecting something but honestly no. I feel like its all the same, dont attack me but theres no excitement or the different feeling.
It's consistent, but that doesn't make it a great one for me. 3/5
A HUGE upgrade from the other album I listened to. Some really good songs on here and his voice grew on me by the end of it.
Underwhelming.
I grew up listening to a lot of Rolling Stones songs, but I’d never listened to one of their full albums until I started this project. This will be my third album of theirs to review, after Beggars Banquet (4 stars) and Let It Bleed (5 stars). I’m excited to listen to Exile though, since it’s supposed to be one of their best albums. As an added bonus, I’ve listened to Exile In Guyville, so I’m interested to see if I can connect the dots between that album and this one (I probably won’t be able to, but it’s fun to dream). For a Rolling Stones album that’s supposed to be the cream of the crop, I thought this was fine. When this album is at its best, it’s fun and bluesy, but at its worst, it’s repetitive and dull. The essentials of guitars, drums, and vocals are competent, but the supplemental instruments, like piano, saxophone, and horns really spice up parts of this album. It’s a small detail, but I think the Rolling Stones always have great backing vocals, and Exile is no exception to that rule. I think my biggest gripe with this album is that there just weren’t really any fun hooks or catchy riffs. “Tumbling Dice” is supposed to be the crown jewel of this album, but I felt like it didn’t stand out at all. The guitar playing on it is competent, but I didn’t find anything about it that set it apart from the other songs on the album. “Rocks Off,” “Loving Cup,” and “Shine A Light” were my favorites off of this album, mostly because they branched out more from the traditional blues-rock sound of the album. Give me Let It Bleed any day of the week, but I’ll probably pass up another opportunity to listen to Exile on Main St.
I think it would really like this album without all the boring blues stuff.
Good, didn’t realize that 70s rock was much more folk and soft rock than what is out there now
Pretty indifferent.
Typical Stones
Far more interesting than the last Stones album I had on the list ( Let it Bleed). Highs include Tumbling Dice, Let it Loose and Sould Survivor
Definitely a side of the stones that I didn't know! Way more "country" than I expected!
Good, but certainly didn't live up to the hype that surrounds it.
Please release me from the Gen X white man prison - I'm scared and wnat to go home. That being said I enjoyed this one - a favourite of my Grandad that I think I had misconceptions of as this was way more soul/rock n roll than I expected Still not sure if this one has much cultural impact in 2024 Listening: begrudgingly Favourite Track: Rip This Joint
Lite skrikigt och skränigt. Några bra låter men inget jag gillar överlag.
Helt bra blues rock, bättre mot slutet
Great Stones album that sounds to me very similar to all of the other stones albums.
I'm not going to get too deep into the weeds on this one, but it's not one of my favorite Stones albums. Beggars Banquet, on the other hand, is one of my favorite albums of all time. The highs here are just not as high and the lows drift into 70s-sleaze rock. I just can't do it anymore.
3.2 stars rounded down. Decent sound but nothing really stands out.
Bluesy Stones with great guitar. 3*
Fine
Oh boy, this list is testing me with these double albums lately lol. Look, I'm a fan of the Stones. I am. I'm not a hardcore fan by any means. But I enjoy the majority of their output. However, I disagree with many people and critics that this is their best album. I don't think it is. Not by a long shot. To pull off a quality and engaging double LP it either needs a reason to be such or it has to have a wide variety of musicality throughout. The Who's 'Tommy' and Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' are rock operas that are portraying a storyline to the listener and is the backbone of the tracklist, weird interludes and all. The Beatles' 'White Album' is an absolute pool of variety ranging from rock 'n' roll, campfire bizzare-ness, ballads in all shapes and forms, a sprinkle of country, and even heavy metal. The Rolling Stones' 'Exile On Main St.' is simply an extended tracklist of that that bluesy rock 'n' roll sound they have perfected; it's great, but rarely do they ever step out of their comfort zone and the album suffers from being far too bloated for its own good. Personal highlights: 'Rocks Off', 'Sweet Virginia', 'Torn and Frayed', 'Happy', 'Ventilator Blues', 'All Down The Line', and 'Shine A Light'. In all honesty, there isn't a single bad track on here. So by that metric 'Exile On Main St.' should be perfection in and of itself. But I'm judging this as an entire piece of work. And as an album it is disjointed, despite the polished production and great songs. It is far longer than it has any reason to be. And does not have the variety or concept to keep it engaging. I know the Stones are on this list a few times, so I'm excited about those albums. For me, personally, 'Exile On Main St.' is an album that you can pick out your favourites and playlist them, but is somewhat hard to sit down and listen to as an overall project. 3/5
Fav: Rocks Off Least Fav: I Just Want To See His Face This didn’t need to be 18 tracks long. At least some of the songs were very good
There are some great songs on this album, and I'd probably give it a 3.5, but I feel the length really hurts it, especially because I didn't feel it was cohesive in any real way. It just felt like a compilation of songs, and the great ones just blended in with the many "good" ones. If there was a 45 minute version, I feel I could really love it and want to return to it a lot, but 67 minutes means I don't know how often I'd want to go back to it.
No stand out tracks, but I like the Stones and I like this more bluesy sound. Didn’t need to be an hour long though.
Actually very enjoyable
steine weg bin sehr gspannt uf das album joa jz nöd gad en firestarter RIP THIS JOINT es isch halt scho e unverchennbari stimm shake your hips funny alles würkt recht improvisiert iwie? s hautmi na nüt würkli um, au wenns recht vilsitig isch (sie haben nicht gelogen) oh gott fucking schnurregiige oh shit ich han wege z101 (ich liebs werd) absolut abgschalte und nüt vode letschte 2 lieder mitübercho hahahah turd on the sun isch kinda fun ah turd on the run hahahaha jaa bis jz findi amigs eifach de groove cool und mengisch e strophe oder en refrain funny aber joa s klavier bi let it loose isch sehr cute stop breaking down het es huere geils solo shine a light on you isch jz s erste wo ich easy spass gha han...chli spaat joa du ich han iwie wenig chönne demit ahfange, schlecht ischs nöd aber iwie ischsmer alles chli glich gsi
Not as good as ‘War’ by U2 but still good enough for me
I’ve tried to get through this album like 3 times and failed each time so maybe that’s a sign from god
I'm a bit ill to enjoy the album fully today. Because of that, I didn't feel like listening. There's some songs I really like. Nothing significant to me here. I wasn't bored halfway through and that's a bonus. 3 stars for "Exile On Main St".
A nice album without blowing me away. Distinctive stones sound without any standout tracks. Some of the tracks fall the wrong side of self indulgence (Ventilator Blues for example).
Not their best album.
I marked down an early Stones album because it was all covers. This is all their own work - and it still feels stolen. And this album was written when they were tax exiles - yet another example of them taking and not giving back.
Nothing really stood out, but it was easy enough otherwise
Love The Rolling Stones but this album wasn't my favorite.
Still going strong
Not bad, but I think they improved, both on originality and sound. Not a single song jumped out at me, but it was still a good listening experience.
I’ve never been a straight ahead blues rock guy. My preferences have always tended more towards art, psychedelic, progressive, and jam band. Based on that, suffice to say in the Beatles vs. Stones debate I’ve always found myself with both feet firmly planted in the Beatles camp. That said, I have always respected the Stones for their musicianship and longevity. This album with its diverse rock-n-roll, blues, and country flavors just isn’t my bag. There are some great songs on this record, especially the "non-hits" and slower tempo like Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Let It Loose, and Shine A Light. In the end, my respect for this work is high as a classic album, but it still doesn't translate into something that makes me want to listen to it repeatedly. 3.5⭐️
Once again, the Stones prove they are a singles band. This is supposed to be one of the greatest albums of all time and it’s… just fine? I’ve never seen the appeal of this album.
Tumbling Dice added to liked
No private session used in Spotify. I was never a huge Stones fan, maybe because I lived through the 80s where the stuff they were putting out and forcing us to listen was that great. Yes, they have some classic songs, but there is a lot of blues inspired rock, which tends to meander and features Jagger's voice, which I have never been a fan of.
For some reason The Rolling Stones and The Beatles are linked in my head. This is weird due to the following: a) I have a long history with listening to The Beatles but this is, as far as I'm aware, my first time with The Rolling Stones b) They sound very different. Favourite track: Tumbling Dice.
I'm sure people that love the Stones LOVE this album. They've always been one of those bands I respect without enjoying very much. Most of that comes down to Jagger's vocal. You either love it or can't stand it, and I'm in the latter camp. Which means in the Beatles versus Stones camp, even apart from the songs, I gotta go with the Beatles just because those guys all have such stellar voices. The fact this is a double album made it a bit of a challenge to get through. A normal Stones album is like watching one of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. But this was like watching the extra long 4 hour extended editions. Still everything that's great about the Stones, but so much of it that by the final third I thought I might need an intermission. Fortunately, the final third kicked in and it was absolutely my favorite part of the album. They mixed it up a lot for those songs and honestly if they had cut down the whole album to a normal sized set of songs that was just "I Just Want to See His Face" through "Soul Survivor", they might have even made a convert out of me. But as it was, the album did two things - reaffirmed for me why the Stones were and are such a big deal to so many people, and reminded me that they're just not quite my flavor. Still - great music, great band. 3 out of 5.
Fun listen if you want some deep cuts. Best Song: Shake Your Hips
It was ok, I suppose. Some tracks didn’t really do anything for me. It was just alright.
I know this is heresy, but I've never been able to get into the Stones beyond a few of the greatest hits. They're not a bad band, it's just not really my style. This album wasn't bad, for the most part (though the vocals on the opening track are pretty painful to listen to). It's just kind of meh for me. The music was pretty good — most of the songs are high energy, competent ripoffs of blues and honky tonk. A lot of the lyrics are just okay, and Jagger's voice gets grating after a while. There are way too many tracks here, and it definitely overstays its welcome. Overall, it's not something I'd go out of my way to listen to, and I feel like I'd probably pick actual blues music over this British impression of it. Also, "Sweet Black Angel" is so weird. If you're going to write a protest song in support of Angela Davis, maybe don't write it from the perspective of a Black character (complete with the N word) and sing it in a minstrel voice. What the hell? 3/5
I don't think I'll ever get the hype around this album. I like a lot of the Stones songs, and none of the songs are bad, but it just goes on for quite a while and most songs don't really do much for me.
I liked the album, but I wouldn't rave about it.
I expected more "hits" off an album title as well known from a band as big as the Stones, but I don't think I've heard any of these songs before. It feels different than the Stones I'm familiar with.
good, but a single album would've been excellent
