Reviews (page 10 of 13)

The expectations might've been too high, but honestly it didn't grab me as much as some of the other albums that have a reputation of being the greatest

Bit long, and missing a few hits on it. A lot of the songs didn't really grab me

I was very indifferent to this Rolling Stones album. I considered giving it a 2 but at the end of the day it’s not that bad, it’s listenable, just zero standout tracks.

Not gonna lie, I went in thinking this would be an hour of consistently mediocre Blues Rock that people overrate for its status as a "classic". But, I ended up enjoying this more than I thought I would. Would rate it higher if it wasn't mixed so poorly.

This album felt very loose and carefree, with a sort of party atmosphere throughout the whole thing, which was pretty cool. It sounds like Mick and the band got together with 20 of their closest friends, boozed it up, and had the time of their lives recording a southern rock album. I love that for them, but I just couldn't really get into it. I've never been a big Stones fan, and this album didn't add any new layers to help me change my feeling about them. I've spent a lot of time and several conversations trying to figure out why I just can't get into the Stones, and I still don't think I have an answer I can articulate. I can see why others might like them, but most of their stuff just isn't for me, and I guess that's all I can say about that. I do think it's kind of strange that this is considered one of their most critically acclaimed albums, but I only recognized the single “Tumbling Dice.” if this album is their best, I would have thought I would have heard more from it over the years.

Its okay - nice background music but seems like it's been playing much longer than an hour.

Sounds like the Stones

Every track feels like a song you can put on the background. Initial listen I did not enjoy the album!

Having not heard this before my expectations were high. Unfortunately it fell short. Decent album tho and may give it another chance but just thought it was going to do more for me

I had never listened to a full album by the Stones. I now know why. It is just middle of the road and nothing is super exciting for me.

I hadn’t ever listened to a full album of Rolling Stones. The guitar was very good and I am shocked that they are still touring because they didn’t seem like a perfect inform band in this album

Not my favorite of theirs

Wow-ee I was disappointed by this. It's waaaay too countrified for me, to the point of being grating. You're from Sarf London Mick, stop sounding like you grew up on a ranch.

The stones are so ok

Nothing jumps out but a nice listen

Didn't know they were so jazzy

Okay The Rolling Stones. it was aight. 3 stars.

Eh. It’s the Stones.

What I would expect from Rolling Stones. More something to have on in the background if I feel like bluesy rock and roll

Nice early Stones, well not early, but when they were still playing R&B and great guitar. 1st time listening through - solid. Awesome album artwork though!

I must be far out in left field because I've never understood the hype regarding this album. To me they have probably half a dozen other albums better than this one. Tumbling Dice is a great classic, but the rest of the songs aren't too memorable.

Too long

Some classic songs and some not so classic

Never was a Stones fan. Some few good hits, but that's it. While this album is much more blues than the usual Stones sound, it still didn't fit me.

Like most Rolling Stones albums, a bit bloated, rambling in parts but with some good tunes. Less honky tonk than some other albums which is a good thing. One of the more enjoyable ones I've listened to but after two listens I still couldn't tell you a single song I remember.

I’m happy to find a Stones album on here, I’ve said they are a band I need to give more attention to. I have always enjoyed what I have heard but never really delved very deeply into their catalog. That said I’m not super impressed with this album. Maybe it’s because I had this on while working, but nothing really jumped out at me. Good album, quality music, but nothing earth shattering on my first listen.

I LOVE some Stones albums, but this is not one of them. It’s ok, but there are much better albums to include in the challenge.

This album showed me I'm more of a greatest hits Stones fan Death to harmonicas

Enjoyable

Yes - The Rolling Stones are a great band! And they all are great musicians! And they love to play music - especially the blues! And this album contains their classics "Tumbling Dice", "Sweet Virginia" and "Shine A Light". But like so many others they failed to hold my attention high for the length of a full double album. Even there is not a single bad song. But too less of them really stand out. Often less would be more. 🤷‍♂️ 3,5

Important album from influential group. Not interesting to me in todays musical landscape.

Nope. Proof that the Stones just don’t do it for me. Most of this failed to hold my attention. I’ll stick to their greatest hits thanks

Every song here just sounds like any old Rolling Stones song. Not bad but nothing to write home about either. Not sure why seemingly every Rolling Stones album had to be on this list.

A solid effort from the Stones - but fails to match the genius of "Sticky Fingers". A strong 3...

Enjoyable listen, but nothing really stood out 3/5

Not a huge Rolling Stones fan. Always the comparisons Rolling Stones vs The Beatles. I am a huge Beatles fan but do find a handful of Rolling Stones songs very good. Wild Horses. Definitely going to listen to this whole album as I have never really listened to a full album of theirs.

Bluesy Stones

Supposedly Stones' best work but I find it just OK. A bit boring even.

Very good

Another unimpressive Rolling Stones album. Yes it did have a few high points but nothing stood out as outstanding. An attempt at making a stripped down southern blues album that just did not work for me.

Great rock/blues album. Not many hits but great songs. The mix is very mid.

It's a fine album. I feel like I should like it more than I do but for some reason the Stones always leave me cold.

Album is ok. Not exactly my favorite type of music. Little too bluesy for me, but still sounds pretty solid. I like a few of the songs.

Rock and roll with a little country and blues fun!

As a noted Beatles fan the Stones were always a bit too crass and vulgar for me. The Beatles are undeniably dorky and their music generally sounds like it was made for children - this could not less true about the Stones who ooze sexual energy. I would feel comfortable calling them criminally horny. Just an aside but I actually have no frame of reference for why the blues are so popular with white people... anyways the music was fun and I like this album artwork a lot even tho some of the pics are racist.

Off to a good start Faded into the background.

Maybe it's just because I'm tired today, but I feel like I didn't enjoy this one as much as I expected. It's perfectly fine, just not great. 3.2

An issue that I have with not being a long time listener of the Stones is that since they are the prototypical rock and roll band they don't directly employ the years of advancements that you would get from all of the artists who build off of your sound. I know that is a little bit like condemning Mozart for not sounding like Hans Zimmer, but I struggle to avoid situation. The Stones are not bad, but I prefer the evolution of the sound more than the original.

Didn't like the Stones back in the day. I was more a Beatles girl. But some Stone stuff is marvelous. Tumbling Dice is one example. Loved All Down the Line - that one should have been a radio hit. Also, Shine a Light Jagger has crazy energy. The band is insanely tight even though it sounds rather ragged. However, the music doesn't move me much. In fact, I got rather bored. I skimmed some of the songs. I feel like this is music for the boys of the 60s. Solid 3 stars.

Not bad, but just ok

3 Decent if unspectacular album

The 60s were all about the Beatles vs The Stones, so it’s interesting to compare this album with Let It Be. Both were recorded in makeshift studios with the bands in a fractious state. However the Beatles finished theirs in a couple of weeks, and punched up their sound with Billy Preston on keys, whereas the Stones took a year and sound hungover with tired blues songs. A couple of classic tracks here and the remastering definitely helps. Mostly average.

This is a good blues album, played by a bunch of English white guys.

Es ist solider Rock der Stones. Mick lässt stellenweise auch seine Brillianz durchblicken. Leider ist kein Song fesselnd, sodass am Ende leider nur ein gehobener Durchschnitt verbleibet.

Better than the last Rolling Stones album. Tonally every song sounded the same. Pretty long and towards the middle It all melded into one long song. This is one of those albums that made it on the list because it is a big band but the album is mediocre at best. 5/10

Meh . My husband was upset that I didn't appreciate this album more.

I think I mostly just like Rolling Stones singles. Their foray into blues and southern rock is fine, but also boring. Lots of talent, very little hooks.

Plenty in it, and a good solid sound, but no absolute bangers. The standout was Loving Cup

This album rocks. It’s just a little long for my taste. The Stones have such a massive catalog, I don’t think I’ve listened this this one and I’ve been down the rabbit hole.

A lot of songs sounded very similar but I still enjoyed listening all the way through. I love when songs have sax or harmonica and this album had a lot of both which was great.

This sounds better than the previous couple of albums... more peppy. But I still don't get it, why are they so great?

A lot of Rolling Stones albums are very much lean forward listening whether its the instrumentation or lyrics. This is the opposite, pure vibes albums, feel like i should be on a back porch drinking a beer listening to it. Fav Song: Shine a Light

Very bluesy

#199. The Rolling Stones' hits are undeniable, but on the whole, listening to an entire album leaves you wanting. None of them seem to be a particularly great listen start to finish. 3/5: ok

I quite like this, though I can't hell but feel that what was seen as innovative, definitive rock music is really just a mainstream, more socially acceptable (i.e. white) presentation for the sorts of sounds coming out of black music culture at the time. Which isn't really a mark against it, but makes me feel like its legacy status would be better placed elsewhere. Or that listeners need to reach further back to see what inspired them. Also as a critique of it it is some 18 songs long and (despite their quality) I would struggle to think of a single standout.

Pretty standard 70s rock. I enjoy this much better than the beetles, none of the big hits you would know but solid throughout. If it had a hit it would be bumped up in stars.

Quite the range of sounds out of this band - who even are they? Blues, honky-tonk, rock, gospel, some country vibes... Tirelessly recorded, I can hear the cocaine from here. I liked the soulful backup singers of "Let It Loose" and "Shine a Light."

It wasn’t bad; decent blues I guess although the sound was pretty muddy and (as ever with Jagger) I can make out about one word in five. But I’ve heard way better by them and the ‘hits’ from it were…..meh. No clue why it’s considered their best work; hope we get another one.

Exile is an odd one for me. I know plenty of people rate it as the Stones' best record and I can see how it garners classic status but I've never much enjoyed it as a whole. Maximum swampy bloozeness, not that fun to listen to.

This would be a great album if it was 25 minutes shorter. As it is, Mick's vocals really wear thin by minute 55. 3.0/5.0: Good

When I read the reviews that it's one of the best rock albums of all time I expected something exciting, a grandiose album with lots of hooks and recognisable hits songs. It's very consistent rock album (even the rhythms are so samey), and I haven't heard any of the songs before.I thought it would excite me more, but instead, it was a fairly boring album. Not bad, but nothing really great either. I guess when it comes to the Rolling Stones, I'll just stick to their hits from the second half of the 1960s.

Pretty groovy. Iconic band and they don’t disappoint. Just not at the top of my list.

Pretty bluesy for The Stones

Sweet Virginia // Shine A Light //

I enjoyed this as background music, all kind of sounded the same, nothing stood out but I enjoyed the overall energy

To be honest I didn’t really feel much listening to this. Was nice background stuff but at no point had me popping or want to sing along. Good but ehh

Rocks Off 3.4 Rip This Joint 3.3 Shake Your Hips 3 Casino Boogie 3.1 Tumbling Dice 3.6 Sweet Virginia 3 Torn and Frayed 3 Sweet Black Angel 2.8 Loving Cup 3 Happy 3.5 Turd on the Run 2.8 Ventilator Blues 3.2 I Just Want to See His Face 3.3 Let It Loose 3.4 All Down the Line 3.2 Stop Breaking Down 3.4 Shine a Light 3.3 Soul Survivor 3.1 Score: 3.188888889

I liked the old-timey American vibe each song has. The album sounds like sitting in an old-fashioned diner and eating a burger and fries. I am unsure how I feel about the album as a whole; I enjoyed a number of the songs like Rocks Off, Shine a Light, and Sweet Virginia. However, many of the songs were very forgettable and quickly moved into the background while I was listening. They weren't bad or unpleasant, just not memorable in any way.

Nothing too memorable. Might've been distracted while listening so worth a second look.

I think this fully answers the question of whether the English can do the blues. Yes, they can.

Okay album, good feelings.

Mick Jagger is mostly unintelligible. His already fuzzy elocution is, for some reason, mixed below not only the harmonica and guitar but also the background singers. Keith Richards guitar riffs carry the weight. None of the hits, none of my favorite stones songs, still somehow a really good album.

Another classic rock album. A bit too much on a all genre list.

Where's the hits? The whole album is samey throughout.

A glorious mess. You settle into one style and rhythm, and then it changes on the next track. The autenticity sounds real, as do the tensions in the band.

the bluesy rock n roll that formed the counterpoint to the beatles really settles into a bit of a repetitive yet entertaining groove on this album.

This was probably great when it came out. Nothing sticks out to me though. Not bad, just didn’t really draw me in.

This album was fine, but the more I hear The Rolling Stones, the more indifferent I become to their overall sound and general appeal.

Competent and consistent blues rock, but just.... boring.

not much of a stones fan outside Beast of Burden, although this album had a song titled Turd on the Run so points for that. pretty okay.

Fine. A little bluesier than I’d like

This one is probably my favorite Rolling Stones album, a lot of really good songs especially Rocks Off and Sweet Virginia. The album is not perfect though, I think ~1/3 of the tracks could have been easily cut. A lot of these songs usually end up getting skipped when they come on shuffle because I listened to them a few too many times, but objectively this is a good album. 3.5 (rounding down because I don't think it's as good as the other albums I gave a 4)

another rolling stones album on this list, huh. it's definitely got much more of a bluesy sound compared to the last one i listened to, like i can definitely hear it. this album is better than the last one i heard but it's just a sound that doesn't make me bat my eye too much. i don't know why, especially with a band like this.

Whatever bro

3.5 stars

Oh my god I thought this album would never end. 3/5

it's fine...

Kind of long

Favourite song - shake your hips

It’s been a long time since listening to this one. The variety probably speaks to the come-and-go style that the recording sessions took on, with the entire band rarely playing together. Or maybe it was all the heroin that Richards was using. Either way there are still some straight up rockers on the front end, with the back half sounding a bit slow in places. Still probably places in my top 3 Stones albums behind Some Girls and Tattoo You. 3.5/5.

I’ve never really been a big Stones fan, but actually really liked this album as I got into it. Perhaps because it didn’t have a lot of their more recognizable hits. Pretty fun album, where they’re tapping into their bar band gear and not trying to be the Shitty Beatles. The double album thing drags this down, as it really loses steam. You couldn’t find 6 or 7 songs to cut to make this a certified banger? I def could.

Man, this album is just damn fun. I enjoyed how raw it sounded at times. The piano glues everything together, guitar riffs are jam-style perfect and a harmonica or horn showing up here and there is great. I also love how at times it sounds like a bunch of random peeps in a room singing along. Prob missing a couple songs that would take it to that next level for me but a solid 3.5 rounded down.

Woo, this is a tough one. Went into it knowing lots of folks think it’s their best. Rocks Off is a legit banger, but I found the rest of it a bit hard to get into. I feel like I may revisit this rating and wish I had gone higher. But at this moment it doesn’t rise to the level of a 4* for me. 3.5/5

It's good, but I wouldn't call it spectacular. Kinda like your average Main Street, I s'pose.

I enjoyed the rocking start with horns, not my favorite RS album, but enjoyable

Het is lang, geen hits, maar wel de Rolling Stones. De andere albums zijn meer iets voor mij, maar alsnog lekker deze. Is Shake Your Hips de voorganger van La Grange?

First album! I've no idea of whats to come, but having a legendary band kick things off is great. Easy rock, something to tap along too. Whilst not memorable, nothing I can fault and say I didn't enjoy.

I've never understood the whole Beatles vs Stones debate. The rolling stones don't come even close to the Beatles. This is supposedly their best work and starts off kinda strong but it's always more of the same and nothing exciting ever happens

most songs sound the same

Sounds like jam sessions that were polished a bit. Stand out tracks - Happy - Shine a light

Better than nothing I guess

Passabler, aber wenig mitreißender Rock'n Roll

It sounded p generic but this may be a Seinfeld effect of rock. Good bbq music.

Listened to this while playing Nusfjord solo. I lost. This album wasn't bad...but it also wasn't my favorite. It was kind of a lot of the same thing...bluesy rock with unintelligible lyrics. I was a little surprised that I hadn't heard any of these songs before.

Another album from a band I respect but I’m not all that into. Not knowing where this album sits in regards to the year it was released in the bands catalog, it feels as if they had already made it big and this was a “B-Sides” release. My choice cut was Sweet Virginia.

Felt like a Turd On the Run when I heard this album. Just had to Let It Loose.

A rather wild mix of styles mostly underpinned by their core. As usual the vocals vary from tight fit to a little baggy. Plenty of strong performances by the band and their guests.

There’s a lot of good things to be said about this, but I could easily shave off half of it while improving the end result. 3.2

Not bad.

don't think i fully was paying attention during the album

sonne comme une chanson qui dure 1h

Good classic rock album with blues influence but not my preferred music. Honorable mentions: Shake Your Hips, Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup.

Definitely one of the most exemplary albums of the classic rock genre.

The end of the Stones creative genius for me, although for plenty, also the high point which baffles me. It's well executed white-boy-blues, but I prefer my Stones tracks to be more...... satanic :)

I like the Rolling Stones. This is fine. Some okay songs, none of their great stuff. Overlong. Not really my thing. If it were played for me again I wouldn't fight it, but I will likely not seek this out on my own again.

I don't think I'm ever going to give the Stones anything but a three unless some of their god awful albums somehow end up on this list. I was building a trampoline for my kiddos as I listened through this one and a Tom Waits album. I liked both but by the time I finished I looked back and realized that I had added 5 Waits songs to my liked tracks and replayed three of them and added zero tracks from Exile. I then realized that I couldn't sing back a single melody either. I listed to Exile second and the assembly was not going smoothly so I assumed I must have zoned out and not realized. After my second listen, I'm of the same mind. I know the tracks I liked best were "Happy", "Loving Cup", "Tumbling Dice", and "Sweet Virginia" but none of them are joining my liked tracks list. They're all... just fine. I think that's what the Stones are, trend chasers. They write just fine music that catches the vibe at the right time. I'm probably going to pick up this album on vinyl if I'm being honest, but mostly because it's something I liked well enough and feel like I can put on a mostly ignore while I'm doing other things. I cannot fathom how anyone could just sit and actively listen to this.

Catchy but I'm not a fan.

Yeah… the Stones are still not my thing.

3 star

This album sounded "older" than what I expected, more bluesy / folksy / something. But while I liked the overall sound, I didn't find myself getting hooked by specific songs. I slightly got into Tumbling Dice. I was also surprised how much Shake Your Hips sounds like the Z Z Top song La Grange.

Instead of modeling themselves on Tina Turner, it sounds like the other black woman Rolling Stones owe a debt to is Aretha Franklin given her gospel concerts influenced this one. Which isn't to say I didn't enjoy this (standout tracks for me were Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, and the Ruby Tuesday feel of Let it Loose) - it's loose and rollicking in places, swaggering and fun in others. But it also makes me want to listen to Muddy Waters, Ma Rainey, Bo Didley, Trixie Smith, Jimmy Reed, and on and on.

I’ve never listened to an album by The Rolling Stones. Unfortunately, it didn’t really do anything for me.

Nice stuff! One of the most iconic rock bands forna reason although nothing too crazy with this album

Not my favorite Stones album, but some great tunes!

Very bluesy, more American than expected, and sounded more 80s than early 70s; I was surprised to read when it was released. Not my cup of tea, it seemed like the Stones were trying to be someone they were not.

It's enjoyable blues rock but it's pretty underwhelming considered how hyped it is. Nothing feels especially innovative and there's not even any huge hits. 3.5

I had higher expectations for this and it fell short for me. Was just alright.

Not really what I expected but its k

One of their most highly acclaimed albums. For me, it's pretty good, but I've never been a Stones fan. 5/5: Tumbling Dice, Happy, 4/5: Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Let it Loose, Shine a Light, 3.5

Pas ce pourquoi j'aime les Stones...

Perfectly average album. Not sure why it needed to be over an hour long. Yet another candidate for an album that could be argued to appear on the best 1001 SONGS of all time, but the whole thing? You're telling me I needed to hear every song on here? No way.

The music is great, but I’m just not a fan of Mick Jagger singing

Unfortunately, unpopular opinion but most Stones songs sound the same to me.

Solid blues

Nothing to get exited about here. I think I’m officially “not a big fan” of The Rolling Stones.

It was just ok. The guitar was good.

No me ha encantado este album. Me parecían todas las canciones un poco iguales.

I hate to be that person but a lot of the Stones stuff sounds the same to me, although I am a fan of most of their hits. The songs that stuck out to me on this album were "Sweet Virginia," "Happy," "Ventilator Blues," and it was fun to hear their cover of "Stop Breaking Down" although The White Stripes cover is the best imo.

Felt over hyped for this record, seems scattered. Some great songs will give it another playthrough later

Nothing super exciting about this album.

I liked this album and the old rock n roll style that the Stones had. More blusey than I expected, though those parts did start to blend together during this long album. Overall it was good.

Like at least half of the songs, certainly the two hits stick with us all.

3.5 Stars. Considered peak Stones by most. This is the first time in a long time that I've listened to this album in its entirety, and I honestly didn't enjoy it as much as I used to when I was younger. Still a great album, but the whole juke-joint piano boogie sound doesn't resonate with me as much as it used to, and given this is a double album, it was difficult for me to listen to it all at once. I'm more inclined to listen to select tracks from this record. Anyway, I'm sure my lukewarm review will be an anomaly.

Could do 30 less songs that sound the same

Loved the instrumentals Didn’t dig the vocals too much, they were not bad but don’t vibe with it

strangely beach boys-esque for the rolling stones?

Like putting the milk in first

Fine. A little long.

I like it, but I don’t really get why its such a classic.

Forgettable songs and a singer with a grating voice. Bonus points for unconventional instruments in the genre. (sax, harmonica, trumpet etc.)

I enjoyed the blues elements in some of the songs in the first half of the album and the Stones are fantastic. Got a bit repetitive - I really liked Sweet Black Angel and Shake your hips.

Too improvisational for me 2.5-3 stars

Before they were dirty old men, you had dirty not-old men

Ja Stonestypischer Sound, etwas Abwechslung, viel Blues, kann man mal hören, aber hat mir nicht riesig viel Spaß gemacht

I couldn't listen to the whole thing 💔💔 but I listened to the ones Amazon music said were the best and liked them. Solid album.

I don't know what it is, but the lyrics and musical stylings just feel like American pandering to me. It's a silly complaint, but it sticks with me. Definitely the most enjoyable Stones album to date, and it finished better than it started. Not bad. Fav tracks: Rip This Joint, Stop Breaking Down, Shine A Light

This is not the best Stones album by any stretch but I do think it's a decent album. One I would probably come back to now and again although nothign really stands out. With Stones records it seems like you usually get one or two huge hits with a bunch of filler and this is not that at all. It all solid but there aren't any big hit that everyone knows. And I kind of like that. Not a 4 star album but a solid 3.5.

A surprisingly long list of Stones songs I've never heard. A fun time, solid all the way through, but not sure why this album in particular is so exceptional?

The album when the Rolling Stones went country. The breakout song here is Tumbling Dice. It's a good album but not typical of the Stones.

easy, a bit boring in the long run

hey its not ass !! I think its cool. but its not really my thing. i love their sound it really reminds me of footloose: the musical and western rock !! but idk. I just think it didnt really wow me or shock me at all. just made me feel positive i guess !!! its a pleasing sounding album. just not WOW OH MY GOD THIS ALBUM !! you know.

The Stones are one of the best rock bands of all time by almost any measure. But not here they're not. Rounded up a 2.5, won't be going back to this one.

Needs a relisten

It's a Rolling Stones album, so it's not like there are going to be many people unsure of the ride ahead of them. I don't think it's anywhere near the level of some of my favourite albums by them (Their Satanic Majesties Request), and even then those albums aren't, to me, close to the great level of weird wonderful experimentation that late 60's rock is known for. Still, it's a good album for sure and one i'd recommend. I think there are probably albums more worthy of being heard before you die than this, though, including other Rolling Stones albums.

Favorite Song: Shake Your Hips A very solid album overall. 3.5/5

unexpectedly to me, just could not listen to Rolling Stones. not drunk or high enough to withstand so much of young naive energy. no thank you, give me my usual cold depression

Gradually grew on me.

some bangers, but for me a lot of background music too

Before this I only ever listened to greatest hit cuts from their discography. I already knew going in that the runtime would be too bloated for my typical preferences. The blues element is likely the thing that brings me back to them rather than other rock groups from these decades. Crazy they recently released an album. 6.5/10

why he saying the n-word

Hard to tell if it was derivative or everything is derived from it. It was fine. Get why it’s a classic but also reinforces that I’m a Beatles fan

Great vibe and easy to jam to but nothing stood out. My personal voting: 4/5 = 1+ song within album I love; rest of album good to jam to 5/5 = multiple songs I love; rest of album is great too

Took me a couple of days to get through. Feel like I needed to be in the right mood for it. Once I gave it an honest listen, it turned out to be a decent album, but don’t think I’ll need to listen to this one again.

slightly pissed because i accidentally got rid of my entire queue clicking on one of these songs giving 50s/60s rockabilly so far i dig it it go hard but i feel like the songs are interchangeable in sound tbh

Decent album. Seems kind of average.

It was a little over the place in regards to order of songs and instruments. Might give it another try in a different setting. 6/10

It's about one of the most straight forward rock n roll records ever, and often considered the Stones' best. I don't think I'd disagree, considering pure, middle of the road rock n roll and blues covers was always their strong suit. That said, there's not a lot going on here that really challenges any norms or pushes any boundaries. The Stones were at that stage in their career where they had certainly gotten comfortable with the sound they had. Exile is that sound on full display. I always wanted to see this band push just a bit more. They had hints of experimentation throughout their discography, but never managed to make anything that was truly experimental. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the massive amount of music that followed this album's formula, that this one just doesn't feel very special to me anymore. I dunno. Richard's distinct tone and style will never get old though. To this day there aren't many duos as iconic or impactful in the spectrum of music as Mick and Keith.

All Main Streets look the same and all these Exile songs sound the same.

The most overrated Stones album in my opinion, especially considering it follows from some of their greatest work with Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers There are some great songs on here and I get why it’s so beloved (Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia especially and Shine a Light) but a lot that are very basic or forgettable and some that are straight up bad (Shake Your Hips, anyone?) This all results in a pretty wildly inconsistent double album that, rather than being incredibly diverse and vibrant like Beatles’ White Album, is just not that exciting

I kinda liked it, but didn't stick so much with me :(

Tumbling dice was pretty good but they have better albums.

Definitely not my favorite era of the Stones. It's solid, but overstays its welcome.

3/5 at least for some of the high notes. maybe 4? 3.5

Oh the brass and piano sections in Rocks Off! Casino Boogie has a good rhythm and instrument breaks that made me want to move. Good Album but not something I would listen to all the time

Good but not my favourite. I do r fully understand why everyone considers this to be their best. It’s missing some outstanding hits

is okay. uplifting and rocknrolly, but baroque era of rock rathe than recent branching which i prefer🤷‍♀️

Was good but just couldn’t get into iy

When I saw it was well over an hour long I thought it would be a chore but was over before I knew it. Good work. 3.5 stars.

Not bad

Not their best

Listened Before? No Album Art: 2 / 5 (black and white photograph collage; maybe it ties back to the album, but its pretty boring) Another Stones album... here's to hoping this is any better than the others. Some interesting vocal effects in the midsection of Rocks Off, but otherwise its a pretty bland honky tonk rock song about only getting off in his imagination (while sleeping). Tuned out for a lot of this one. Let It Loose was the first song outside of the familiar hits that grabbed my attention in any way. Pretty song with the organ work; feels vulnerable in some way. I feel like I'm just missing something with the Stones. I understand their place in rock history, and they certainly churned out some jams, but their albums have been underwhelming to my taste. Just as with the other two on this list thus far, this one is kind of generic fluff outside of the hits. Sure, nothing is "bad" but there aren't many times when I found myself thinking "wow that was cool." All in all, I don't think this justified a double album playtime. I'm a super soft 3 / 5 here. This is the softest of the 3 so far in terms of quality hits, but the strongest in terms of non-hit filler. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists:

The Stones to me have always been the quintessential classic rock if someone were to ask me what classic rock was I would point to them. This album backed up that thought. Nothing bad with it at all it is all just very nice to listen to without anything being offensive musically at all. But also nothing will blow me away. Shine a Light however is my favorite Stones songs.

A few songs in and nothing spectacular. Nothing terrible either. Only songs I knew coming in were Tumbling Dice and Sweet Virginia. Both are confirmed jams. Didn't know Let It Loose by name but recognize it from The Depahted. Might watch that tonight now. Another Stones album another 3. Always thought I've been missing something with the Stones. Like obviously they have their known jams that fuckin rock but I feel like if I don't know one of them then the song is just meh. Beatles >>>>>

Good album. Not my favorite stones album, but really solid. 3.5

Glimpses of the Stones good songs but overall not great.

Not my favorite - too honky tonk. Let it Loose is good-ish. Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice are ok.

Yeah it’s fairly decent. Not a favourite that’s for sure, but very listenable.

Better than let it bleed but still just sanitised stolen blues. Boo

No songs stood out to me but in general they're above average for sure

Classic rock album

Just okay

A bit long, but enjoyable overall. Not many standout tracks though.

It's the Rolling Stones, and supposed to be the very best of the Rolling Stones. Maybe I just don't get really get it, or you had to be there.

Had a lot of catchy songs, but the longer I listened the more the songs sounded the same.

Still not much of a Stones fan. Good sampling, though.

bit too country in places, Stones still always deliver a pretty good album but it doesn't really grab you or be memorable 3.3

Bluesrock, although none of the tracks are bad none of them really stand out for me.

One of the great bands of all time, swagger and sound and a greatest hits list that stands up to the best. But on album ... not so much. Rambling songs of RnB riffs with no particular place to go.

its fine but i won't be revisiting. basically how i feel about all the stones albums I've listened to so far

Classic rock that holds up well 50 years later. 7/10

This album doesn't even give a single fuck what I have to say about it anyway.

I don't like the style but it seems like a good album. I'm not a fan of bluesy country vibes. It was so long. I was zoning out by the end just a bit.

Decent, some catchy bits, some songs I didn't know were good

Bluesy. I hadn’t heard a lot of these. Harmonica.

Rolling Stones right up there with the Beatles on the most overrated list. Something about Mick's voice I just don't care to hear. With that said, they do have some good tunes, just not off this album. I kept thinking to myself, is this a country/blues album? I don't know, I kept thinking country with no true feeling. Anyway, I didn't find terrible, but noting made me want to come back and listen again. There were a few songs I thought were ok. Rip This Joint, Shake Your Hips and Casino Boogie come to mind. But after a couple listens, they only thing that stood out was the song All Down The Line. And that's just because Blackberry Smoke covered it on one their albums. And even then, not a big fan of the song and Smoke does it better. A long album with little substance except the name of the band. 3

3 Yeah… I don’t know about this one. At first I was like “Oh, cool blues sound”, and then the album proceeded to make no deviation whatsoever from that sound for the rest of its 67-minute runtime. There are no high points or low points, just middle-of-the-road blues rock that long outstays its welcome. Why is this considered their best? Mick Jagger doesn’t even like this album, and most of the band shied away from it as best they could due to not wanting to step foot in Keith Richards’ drug den, where it was being recorded. I get that a lot of great albums are the result of a group in turmoil, but one in which the majority of your group isn’t even invested in its success? To me, that lack of collaboration is definitely reflected here. I listened to this four times in an effort to retain anything from my listening, and yet I’m still unable to point to a favorite here. If this is your favorite Stones album, I’m curious which track is your favorite and why - and no, just Shake Your Hips just because it sounds like La Grange. Once again, the overall sound is enjoyable enough to keep it out of the 2 territory, but I’m really failing to see what escalates this album into what many consider a 5.

Wasn’t familiar with any of these songs and prefer the other Stones music that I am familiar with by a lot. Also wasn’t able to pay full attention while listening so that may have something to do with it. Didn’t dislike it though.

“What’s the next best band after the Beatles? Ah the Stones, obviously.” Received wisdom, right? But…eh. Not for me. I don’t get it. At all. Sorry.

The rockers sound great and there are some really pretty moments. The blues and gospel stuff I am not really into. Having to sit through a whole Stones double album made me realize that it's Mick that bums me out about the band.

I’ve always felt The Rolling Stones were overrated and this kinda backs it up. This is all unmistakable as them but at the same time entirely forgettable. Loving Cup holds a special place for me, mainly because of another band’s covers of it.

nix besonderes

I have mixed experiences with the Stones, and this album follows that trend. I do hear some excellent and interesting blues and rock on this album, but I also listen to a lot of earlier blues music and like that better overall. Personally, I don't usually like their country-influenced tracks. I seem to mostly enjoy the tracks that are in the more rootsy-rhythmic style like 'Tumbling Dice'.

It’s okay but not my favorite Rolling Stones album.

Highlights: "All Down the Line," "Tumbling Dice," "Rocks Off," "Stop Breaking Down" This messy, crowded production and an increasing use of winds and brass is what the Stones needed. Fits their style perfectly and feels like growth. As far as we've heard, their best album to date. Probably gets a third star just for being the most flattering representation of them. And this still would have already felt so dated by 72. It's that feeling again where I tell myself "well, it was a different time," but as soon as you put on another hit record from the same year you can realize that no, you don't have to settle!

Everybody know the Rollings Stones, i know this cover but i never listen to it its this album who as been reccorded at the nellcôte villa in southern france, the villa that Keith rented in 1971, Keith who as at this point develloped a serious heroin addiction and some song reflected it (rocks off). There is a coupple of good songs, like rocks off, tumbling dice, shake your hips and vantilator blues, but there is too much "forgetable songs" like not bad song but just not that good, itd often like that in a double album. In general, the album is very bluesy or country style rock n roll, i'm more a fan of the 60's rollings stones songs, i don't think is the best Stones's album of all time, but i admitted that its good. Its also show the root of the rollings stones, like old blues and country (the Robert Johnson cover for example).

Competent but a bit overstuffed, kinda like The Rolling Stones in 1972.

Not really my cup of tea. I mean they are still The Rolling Stones, but I haven't found anything outstanding here.

Classic rock with added keys and trumpets, and Mick Jagger being pretty over the top with his weird open mouth Britishness. I just know that mic is coated in saliva

It's good, but not that good. I've always considered this to be another one of those albums which are considered "essential" but are overrated (see Marquee Moon). It all becomes homogenous and would have benefited by pruning down to a single lp.

Obviously a classic but not my thing. Sounds too generic

good but aged

Just fine

No es el disco que más me gusta de la banda. Tiene buenos momentos pero me quedo con otros discos de ellos

It’s fine. Just fine

I like the band, the album is solid, but this is not my favorite Stones. Also, I get the sentiment of Sweet Black Angel but it's a no from me.

Solid tracks but kinda all sounding similar. Will probably grow on me after consecutive listens. Mad skill though so no disrespect with the 3, just not my vibe

Some good songs on this one but never really anything that captured my attention or made me listen more intently. Might be a preconceived notion, but was expecting the energy and sound of The Rolling Stones from their big hits. Overall not a bad listen but not one I'll be going back to.

This album feels like one big jam session - it's enjoyable but a bit on the long side.

After the first half hour I thought this was a 4 or 5 for me... then it kept going and going and going. Not enough variety for an album that is nearly 2 hours long.

A classic album without any stand out classic tracks - somehow. Decent songs, and a lot of them, but nothing that makes you stop and listen.

Un po' noioso per essere degli stones...

Had meer verwacht van een van de grootste bands ter wereld

day 33. I breezed through this as background music first listen, thought it was ok and was ready to give 3 stars and move on, but I figured I should at least go back and try to remember/appreciate something about it. this is a pretty good album, nothing too glaringly bad on it. Lots of different styles and instruments and they flow in and out of them effortlessly, so I get why it’s considered one of the greats. I just don’t think this album is for me. Longer than I like, first off. But mostly, I often felt the production was a bit too… bombastic? There’s so much going on at any given point that everything gets drowned out. And I already have a hell of a time trying to figure out what Mick is saying. So I found it to be a bit of a frustrating listening experience. I struggled to find a song where I “got it”. Rocks Off came closest, maybe Sweet Virginia or Shine a Light. Several others I thought mayyybe, but then I read the lyrics and it’s a generic song about drinking or sex again. idk, maybe the Stones just aren’t for me. 2.5/5 rounding up to 3

Gutes Blue Rock Album, aber auch nix besonderes. 3-4

I don't think I'd like the Stones much if I didn't love specific songs for cultural reasons. None of them were on this album, didn't like i much.

Tried to listen but am just not a Rolling Stones fan. All sounded a bit similar to me

Long extended album. Fun blues, a few good tracks, but not too many huge standouts. 👍, but not amazing or anything I wouldn't say.

I liked the range of instruments used throughout but its a bit of a clanging mess at points too

This is fine, as far as Rolling Stones albums go. Most of the songs kind of sound the same to me, and I've never been a big fan of Mick Jagger's voice.

I would say this is probably more of a blues album than a rock album. Which is why I like this Rolling Stones album more than the others I've heard.

Good mix of blues and rock. Nothing really stood out but it was a solid album.

It's good, it's Rock.

leuka putoaa lattiaan, silmät ponnahtavat ulos kuopasta trumpettien säestyksellä, sydän lyö ulos rinnasta, awooga awooga -ääniefekti, vetää ketjua junan pilliin, joka on ilmaantunut pään viereen höyryn puhaltaessa ulos, iskee nyrkkejä pöytään, kolhittaa lautasia, kulhoja tai hopeaesineitä, viheltää äänekkäästi, ilotulitus ampuu pään yläosasta, housut äänekkäästi, kun kieli roikkuu suusta, pyyhkii koomisen suuren hikihelmen otsalta, puhdistaa kurkun, suoristaa solmiota, kampaa hiuksia* Ah semmonen tähtimäärä

This feels like proof that overrepresentation in this list may be just as bad as underrepresentation. I've already heard this before. Yeah, it's classic rock music which is always a treat but in the context of this project, it feels uneccessary to have to listen to this much Rolling Stones. It's not like they're doing something significantly different with each record, it's just different shades of rock and blues. All that said, this was alright. Too long at 18 tracks but there are some good ones there. Can't help but feel like I've heard this all before, though. Standout track is Loving Cup.

I've listened to a few Rolling Stones albums and some of them are quite different and even experimental. This one however has them on autopilot. It's just nothing special- just the usual bluesy rock with Mick's swagger.

Alku lähtee kovaa, mutta levy jyystää pitkään tasapaksusti. Toisaalta meininki viehättää

Second Time Listening. First time I thought it was just Ok. Second time I thought it was pretty good but nothing insane. Disc 1 is way better than disc 2.

If I was a Stones fan, this would probably be one of my faves. But I'm not. It's a very good blues-driven rock and roll album, with classics on it... but for me, it's just a decent record. Nice to hear from start to finish, though.

Some good songs, largely pretty forgettable

Never a massive fan of the Stones, particularly this period

Pretty typical stones honestly, sounded like that classic rock and roll with folkier elements. A good listen. A lot of more obscure songs to their discography.

Some songs had a nice little bluesy sound to them. I give this 3.5 stars.

This about was too long and I stopped caring around the 5th song

Prime Jagger here, and some quality tunes. It all feels of a piece with itself, which makes for a pleasant listening experience. However, Exile... does tend to meander, and leans too heavily on gospel backing. Lowlight - 'Sweet Black Angel' is plain embarrassing. Still, the guitars weave and bob, there's a cool loose feel throughout and Mick slithers about like a sexy lizard. Could be four stars on another day.

This is a pretty clean sounding album for something so bluesy. I both enjoyed it and was never blown away; this tends to constantly show up as one of the best albums of all time and I gotta tell you I was expecting way more familiar hits on here. I guess I'll give the public discourse credit for picking one that's maybe less obvious than some of the others. Anyway, I quite liked "Loving Cup" and will never complain about having too many songs with the word "turd" in the title, so bonus points for "Turd on the Run." My biggest takeaway? Holy crap does ZZ Top's "La Grange" sound exactly like "Shake Your Hips." Like lawsuit close. These songs came out a year apart? Wow.

Kinda falls flat for me as far as Stones albums go. Not bad, just not great.

My perception of this album changed in ways I still haven’t fathomed when I discovered much of it was recorded in Nice, Côte d’Arsetrim. The record is too long. It’s ok, I just don’t like Bobby Gillespie drooling over my shoulder. Not that many standouts for the duration, most tracks would benefit from an accompanying Scorcese montage to augment the hallelujah coke fiend blathering. Going through the record, the first song that always halts me, regardless of mood, is “Let it Loose”, 14 tracks in.

Much more country than I would have expected. Pretty enjoyable, but too long in my opinion.

Decent background music. Not sure what else to add, its The Rolling Stones. But better than I remembered. Much prefer this bluesier sound than the more rock’n’roll sound I’m more familiar with. I like this, but probably wont go out of my way to go back to it

Very listenable but I'm just not sure it's for me really. Didn't mind it though. I think if I didn't know this was the rolling stones I would be more impressed.... Didn't live up to the hype type thing. I also think they've got albums containing better tracks than are on this. Very long too

Solid solid music throughout - not one bad song, but no big wows either

I am not sure there is enough variety in musical styles to justify the bloat of this album. There is some amazing stuff on here, with songs like Sweet Black Angel, Loving Cup, and Ventilator Blues standing out to me. I’ve never been as high on Shine a Light or Soul Survivor. It’s a good album. I can’t say any of the songs are bad, but this album just seems like a lot of variations of the same thing and that might be the idea, but it doesn’t resonate with me as much as other Stones albums.

some good ones here but overall an ok album

NAWT FUNNAAAYYY

One that I feel I should like but that in reality I find just fine. I don't mind listening to it, might even enjoy some of the songs but I won't pick it for myself to listen to.

Good but kinda long
