Adele has taken the bitter breakup album to a new level since Alan's Morisette's Jagged Little Pill. 21 is a heart wrenching view into a very public breakup. This album was all over with it's monster hits and is deserving of being on such list despite the over saturation Adele has taken with her succeeding 29 and is starting to overstay her welcome, but 21 can stay, it's amazing. 4/5.

Starts off upbeat, gets into boring slow jams, picks back up, slows down again, picks up, slows down it all sounds too clean, I'm sure grocery stores and outlet malls are happy this exists

Not in my edition of the book! 2011. 5 stars. Adele before she became a parody of herself. Cracking voice, and the albums is packed with great tunes. What's not to like?

The first song was much better than expected. I am pleasantly surprised so far (1:17 into the album). But can Adele keep it rolling? She kind of did for the first three songs, but when Don't Your Remember hit I wanted the ejector seat button.

It’s great. It gets lost in the middle tracks but ends nicely. She sings with so much emotion and the audio is well produced. She ends up with an award winning album after a breakup and I get stuck with alimony. Rolling in the Deep is one of those songs -- like I Will Always Love You, Stairway to Heaven, Let It Be, Kiss From a Rose, Unchained Melody -- that has become part of the cultural air we all breathe. A significant accomplishment.

So I am not an Adele fan. Don’t hate her by any means, I just mean that I’ve never listened to an album of hers all the way through before and none of her music is in my library. I thought about this one a bit after listening and I have to say, with no existing bias towards her whatsoever, I’m going to have to give it a 5. I can’t think of many albums with such a strong first half. This first 5 songs from Rolling In The Deep to Set Fire To The Rain was relentless. There was one song in the middle I’d not hear before and then it went on to a really strong finish. I can’t say that Adele will take a permanent place in my library rotation after this, but you’ve got to give credit where it’s due as the saying goes. Brilliant album to be fair. Weird one for me to give a 5 and not have it in my library already and then subsequently choose not add it after giving it that score. But I feel confident in the score “I was in the o2 signing my lungs out, Rudeboy - you’re never too big for Adele” - Stormzy, Big For Your Boots - Feb 2017.

Her voice is a joke. It's so good but I don't think there's anything special about this album. Whilst the songs are decent enough, there's no major standout other than Someone Like You which is a banger. 'Rumour Has it' is a song I have always disliked, I just hate the chorus. As I say, it's all thanks to her voice. If I could sing like that I reckon I could knock an album out of similar quality.

Holy moly wat een hits. 'Rumour has it' vind ik altijd wat minder, 'Dont you remember' is ook niet heel best, maar verder gewoon super sterk, met 'Someone like you' als absoluut hoogtepunt. I've heard this album a bunch of times. Adele has a magnificent voice. The songs are all good, and it flows quite well. While not my preference in music, the album is definitely a good one.

Adele has an amazing voice, although I could find nothing memorable on this album other than the first track.

I knew adele but to be honest i never listened to one of her album. This was a pleasent surprise. Each song was well sang, well composed and really great overall. The vocals are insane, this is really a great album and i will definitely catch up on her other works

Rating: 2.5 Very radio-friendly, over-produced and safe pop album. Nothing too bad but nothing good about it either. Vocals can get overwhelming at times. Few tracks are quite catchy though. Not fan of the lyrics. Get over this asshole Adele already! Best track: He Won't Go (good intrumentals, nice bluesy-soulsy vibe) Worst track: Someone Like You (rightfully turned into a meme song, can't stand the vocals)

I own this album and have listened many times. While there are some songs that I don’t love, it’s excellent. I love Adele so much.

I do enjoy that raspy, sultry soulful voice and some of her songs work really work but others not so much, "He Won't Go" and her cover of "Lovesong" in particular. However the good songs are stellar.

Not as strong an album as 19, but still some really great songs here. She shines when she can really exercise her soulful vocal phrasing (He Won’t Go), and is only pulled down by a couple less inspired compositions. I actually like the cover of Lovesong with the acoustic guitar, organ, and strings. She’s at her best when the focus is on her and everything else is there to support (I Found a Boy).

A really strong start but it overstays its welcome. Some where around track 5 I just got bored with it.

I knew the singles because I've been alive and have ears. And I think the record guys did a good job picking the strongest songs as singles. The rest of the album never veers into "I want to turn it off" territory, but never gets into the "I'd choose to listen to this again" either.

um, this is really good. The hits "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" that I've heard a thousand times feel way different in album context. Some of the production is a little "too much" for me, like the strings on "Set Fire to the Rain" grate on me after a while. "Rumour Has It" and "I'll Be Waiting" were highlights for me.

It's not my sort of thing, but it's a damn fine album.

Great voice, great lyrics, great talent. I can see why people might not like Adele, but I’m a big fan. Glad she hasn’t gone the way of other great, young talents and joined the 27 club.

I don't like It

Honestly I'm not the world's biggest Adele fan but this album was such a cultural moment I can't help but appreciate it

I worry this might be another case of me seeming purposely contrarian, but I’ve never been the biggest fan of Adele. She seems fun on chat shows, but her music is just a bit too miserable for me. Regardless, it’s been a long time since I’ve listened, so let’s have a go! Songs I already knew: Rolling In The Deep, Rumour Has It, Set Fire To The Rain, Someone Like You Favourites: Rolling In The Deep, He Won’t Go This wasn’t quite as miserable as I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong, there are occasional bouts of sorrow, but it wasn’t chronic grimness. So that’s good. I was also surprised by how bluesy it was at times. The singing was technically great, but I found it quite boring. Don’t get me wrong, Adele can hit all of the notes, but there just isn’t enough excitement here for me. Overall, this was better than I expected but still nothing I’m going to be rushing back to listen to.

The Adele album that has my favourite songs of hers - wish we’d see a little more of the Rumour Has It and Rolling in the Deep banging soul side of her more often.

The bookends of this album make it an instant classic. Heartfelt lyrics from a heartbreak mixed with clean and simple arrangements make this a great listen. Take my 5 for those bookends.

An excellent album

She has a great, soulful, voice with a little southern vibe to it. The songs, while not incredibly original, are well written. This was a nice listen.

This was a hard one to rate. Every song is beautiful and Adele is one of the greatest vocalists ever imo. The album has everything, incredible hits, very well produced, the lyrics and singing are amazing But in the end its just a little bit bland, a lot of the songs though beautiful sound almost the same in a way. Its also not very creative imo and sounds a lot like 19

A modern classic, Adele's voice is so gorgeous. Listening to the whole album is a lot since she sounds like a psycho stalker after 11 songs about the same dude, but every individual song on its own is so good!

God, can she sing! At its best, this album offered moments of rawness, emotion and soulfulness reminiscent of Amy Winehouse...a pleasant surprise. But, all in all, the music is too mainstream, conventional, and unchallenging for this listener.

Very impressive. I was obviously well aware of the album before, and heard a good few of the songs many times, but had never listened to it in full before. Crazy that she was 21 here.

This album could've done with just the hits. The "Lovesong" cover really ruined it for me. So cheesy.. The songs that weren't released as singles were too whiny. This is an album I am very familiar with! I can't believe it came out 11 years ago! I distinctly remember Adele's name being everywhere following the release. There are 5 singles out of 11 songs on this album, and each one recieved insane amounts of fanfare. Adele has an amazing singing voice! It is so weird to hear her speak, then sing! It's like 2 different people. The music on this album is minimalistic, but I believe that is on purpose so that her voice is in the spotlight, which it should be! Another crazy fact is that Adele recorded this album when she was only 21 years old. There are a lot of songs about heartbreak on this album, which she wrote after a hard breakup shortly before this album was released. There is always something to be said about an artist who writes their own material, because the pain felt through the lyrics of some of these songs is something that cannot be recreated by anyone except the person going through the breakup. This was a phenomenal album, and I will definately listen again! It's hard to not know many of the songs on this album, so many have become hits. It's the kind of album I would have on in the background and could listen to from start to finish but not one where I would pick out individual songs to listen to. Adele's vocals are impeccable as expected and powerful - what a set of pipes she has. However I do feel like other than the singles most of the other tracks are fillers and not particularly unique or memorable. Standouts songs - Set Fire to the Rain, Turning Tables, Someone Like You

Cependant, je dois avouer que, même si on m'avait offert cet album à sa sortie, je l'ai très peu écouté, car je trouve l'ensemble trop chargé, trop d'envolées, trop d'émotions. On est toujours un peu sur la même note. Alors, oui aux chansons elles-mêmes, non à les écouter toutes l'une après l'autre.

Man, this album comes off the ropes swinging with a couple of absolute haymakers. It quickly calms down into a beautiful ode to unrequited and lost love. Are they all hits? Nah. It honestly starts to wear a bit but Adele's voice is so great and her delivery so passionate that the energy carries right through the sleeper tracks and back into the good stuff. Overall, a really great album. If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would.

An absolute pop classic full of hits. There's nothing wrong with this album. Adele has an absolutely beautiful voice and she used that to the fullest in those songs. Besides the hits that everyone knows and are obviously very good, the rest of the album doesn't disappoint either, providing tons of emotional stimulation and wonderful vocals. Although it is monothematic, giving us a love song and upbeat commercial hits for the radio. Unfortunately, Adele's voice seems to be the only reason for the album's great reception. Too cheesy or too bland songs are being saved by her astonishing singing skills, making this album work after all. But I guess everyone needs a simple love song once in a while. Favourite track: "Set Fire to the Rain", least favourite track: "I'll Be Waiting"

Is it dumb to say that this sounds better than it is? For all the drama and competence (singing, playing, production), one senses a distinct lack of soul. After the big-hit opening duo, there’s a big lull until “I’ll Be Waiting” and “One and Only,” both of which are well north of solid. Of the Cure cover, the less said the better. One’s view is that it’s borderline blasphemous, besides being lazy and obvious. One’s general sense that this won’t age all that well seems borne out by the book’s banishing Adele – both 21 and 25, in fact – in the latest editions.

Ahhh a classic great album from my high school years. Like half the songs were massive hits and I loved them at the time and still love them now. only maybe 2 or 3 that didn’t quite jive with me. 8/10

2.5. At times soporific, doesn't encourage relistening. Adele's vocals are good but the music is often insipid. Standouts: Someone Like You is still great.

Love it

Big – maybe a bit too big at time, in the trying-too-hard sense – but the voice is a powerhouse and there's an early feel after just a few cuts of an unimpeachable (playing solid, production top-notch), instant classic. But listening onward, the vocals are overcooked, the drama forced. This is music for the masses, particularly that huge segment that cries at mediocre, made-for-TV* dramas. *Now made-for-streaming platforms

Undeniably a stunning album

Just a tour de force. It was my kids that got me listening to Adele in the last few years. They are always excited to hear her so by extension, so am I! This album is the best I've heard and it is a stable around us.

Every couple of years a singer like Adele comes through with a breakout album that's been promoted, marketed and consequently adored by all the early/mid-30's, recently married (mostly) women. There were the Celines, the Didos, the McLachlans, the Tunstalls and countless others. Now, it may not be fair for me to lop them all in together, because they're not all the same, but they all serve the I Heart Radio enthusiasts that gobble up this homogenized stuff. There's nothing wrong with 21, but there's nothing amazing about it either. It's plain vanilla. I can say that. I'm a dabbler in the I Heart Radio world and I've even got a special place for the tunes that I find there. That place is called my 'guilty pleasures' playlist. You'll find artists like Vanessa Carlton, Counting Crows, Jane Weaver and Cracker there. If you're an artist tho, there's no clear path to gaining acceptance to this coveted and enviable playlist. Yes, Adele has a great voice, amazing even. All of the women above do. But unfortunately, this is just like so many others and doesn't resonate as anything special.

I really liked this album. Admittedly, I got sick of it when it was overplayed so much. But I’ve never listened to the whole thing end-to-end and I think it’s a great musical arc. 21 is aptly named, isn’t it? Every generation has its “you broke my heart” sob songs, its “you asshole cheated on me” battlecry songs. What I appreciate about Adele’s groove in that well-worn path is that it doesn’t go out of its way to be rageful or cynical. Instead, it’s mournful and reminiscent and reflective and sassy and hopeful. Also, I’m a sucker for perfect fifths in the baseline.

It's hard when you have to sit a group member down for a difficult intervention. To have a talk about a review so absurd it makes the whole group look bad. But we are sadly at that point with pretentious-ass. A hard reviewer to agree with, as the data attests, but someone who often makes a good point and shares a reasonable opinion even if I don't always share it. Alas, not today. Then again, there really isn't much else like Adele, despite some of the nonsense below. I am married. But not a woman. And no longer in my 30s. But I'm pretty confident Adele transcends the bubble pretentious-ass tries to shove her into. "There were the Celines, the Didos, the McLachlans, the Tunstalls and countless others. Celine Dion is the only one that can come close to touching Adele's popularity and superstardom. I'm sorry that I Heart Radio is having such a tough time figuring out what to put on your Adele station, but that's because there is pretty much no one else that fills that same niche. But KT Tunstall? Never even had a top 10 hit song. Dido? Once. Sarah McLachlan? Just two, though "Angel" far outlived it's time as a hit thanks to the ASPCA. Dion is the only one who comes close. Though she had contemporaries in the 90s that were just as big, whereas no one in the 2000s can touch Adele. Dion had four #1s and 10 top 10s. Adele has had five #1s, eight top 10s, and 25 total songs on the Hot 100 to Dion's 21. But "Rolling in the Deep" was on the chart for 65 weeks, twice as long as the biggest Dion hit. It's not just 30-something soccer moms that kept Adele that hot. "There's nothing wrong with 21, but there's nothing amazing about it either. It's plain vanilla. I can say that. Then we're bringing Vanessa Carlton into it, which seems to follow in the seriously overrated department after Dido and KT Tunstall, but then we take a major detour. Counting Crows were not vanilla. But you finally got one right. Acceptable guilty pleasure. Jane Weaver I'll pass on as I barely know her from the 1001, and Cracker... the less said about that barely a one-hit wonder the better. This guilty pleasures playlist is weird. "Yes, Adele has a great voice, amazing even. All of the women above do. But unfortunately, this is just like so many others and doesn't resonate as anything special." Not amazing, even. Just flat out amazing. One of a kind. The only one that could have given her any kind of run for her money as the iconic voice of her generation would have been Amy Winehouse. "21" is absolutely top-notch from start to finish. Five singles hit the top 100. It sold 31 million copies, more than 10% more than the next highest album of the 21st century (weirdly 2nd place is a three-way tie between Linkin Park, Eminem, and Norah Jones). It is likely that no album will ever sell that many copies again. No one since Adele has come through with a break-out like she did at 19, or followed up with an even bigger hit at 21. The only artists making those kind of sales, pop chart, spins, and streams impact at that age are manufactured boy bands. She is a legit singer-songwriter with a dynamic voice (both in her writing and her singing). There is almost no one who is comparable, despite pretentious-ass' misguided efforts. I rarely listen to music like this. But when I do, it's Adele. I'm pretty sure that even if I really didn't care for the music I'd have to give it at least 4 stars on iconic impact alone. But there are so many songs on this album that break the scale that I don't even have to consider it.

Adele clearly went through some shit but damn I am glad we got this album as a result. This album is a pop masterpiece with infusions of R&B, gospel, and soul. Her voice has a very unique texture and tone that makes every note ooze with her heartbreak, anger, and depression. By the time Set Fire to the Rain is done, I am emotionally exhausted, and it's only halfway through the album! This album will be in my regular rotation forever, it was a classic the moment it was released.

I could write a similar review as I did for Joni Mitchell’s Blue. Voice is angelic, phenomenal, 10/5. The songwriting is not a problem like I had for Blue, but there is a lack of connection for too many of the tracks. The singles are familiar and fun. Most of the drama (the good kind) is tied up in the choruses while the verses are so so. The note at 2:45 in One And Only is Awe inspiring though. I get full body chills. That whole song is great. This is in the 3.5 range, but there’s not enough to round up. Very solid album, but I’m just not going to seek it out for another listen.

Desde antes me gustaban 3 o 4 canciones de aquí y la verdad es que su voz me gusta mucho. Disco variado con arreglos y ritmos diversos y discretos cuya función es lucir la voz y lo logran. One and Only y Set Fire to the Rain son mis favoritas.

Ok, no voy a hacer chistes de gordas… ¿Pero qué tal de exgordas? No encontré razón para no darle 5 estrellas a este discazo. Por un lado, encontraron una fórmula para hacer POP que no fuera música de antro (todo el resto del pop que ha pegado desde 1998 es música para bailar, y de hecho los artistas se ven forzados a lanzar música así solo para mantenerse en el gusto del público). No solo eso, el disco tiene canciones para todos: movidas, tristes, artísticas, etc. y son canciones que tienen cohesión entre ellas. La voz de Adele es uno de los grandes ingredientes (independientemente a que si su técnica es buena o no y eventualmente la va a dejar afónica), pero también el peso de Rick Rubin como productor y la excelente instrumentación, llena de buenos detalles, hacen que el disco sea agradable todo el tiempo. Mención especial a Someone Like You, que además tiene una letra tremenda. Por otro lado, creo que el cover a The Cure podría ahorrármelo (pero porque no soy fan de la original).

GREAT vocals, but the production and songwriting get a little schmaltzy at times

She has an amazing voice, obviously, and these songs are written to showcase it. I still think "Rolling In the Deep" is a great song, but the rest is a little dull. Still I'll take Adele a thousand times over Celine Dion.

Absolutely gorgeous album. Scratchy vocals that easily reach her ranges. Haunting ballads on love, breakup, introspection and healing seep from her recent breakup with her partner. Love song is my favorite. Truly so beautiful. Major Amy wine house vibes, and overall incredible emotion pouring from every song. No problem giving this one 5/5.

When this came up I groaned. I'm so bored of Adele. However, once you've suffered 'rolling in the deep' again for the gazillionth time, this is actually a decent album. The girls got soul. Still bored of her though

Her music isn't really my thing but DAMN does she have pipes. What a gorgeous voice.

Adele's soulful voice was something out of nowhere back in the late 2000s. I feel like I've taken it for granted since she was everywhere in pop & pop culture for the last 10 years. Still doesn't take away how catchy & vocally impressive this album is.

14th September 2022 Listened throughout the day while Ben and Nilisha stayed and worked from home at ours. Dinner at mum and dad’s in the evening. I was always quite dismissive of Adele, but listening back now this album is stunning. It’s big, it’s bold, her delivery is generational.

Really liked waiting for you and one and only love the guitar in lovesong two seperate acoustics playing in different ears took me a second to realise it was a cover of the cure

Everything sounded good. Adele has a nice voice and I appreciate the use of real instruments/musicians on a popular pop album, but it was boring. Nothing new or interesting, not for me. He Won't Go was pretty good.

I’d heard a bunch of these songs before and never listened to the full album, but I really enjoyed this. Really good bluesy, soulful pop album.

Everything about it was technically good, but I don't feel like I have to go back and listen to anything again.

On second listen I don't think there is a bad song on the album. First half is stacked with radio hits but there is a lot to like through the end. Favorite: I'll Be Waiting

It's not for me, but there's no denying this album is strong. It never quite matches up to the opening two tracks, both of which are magnificent... Had it kept this rich vein of dark 60s soul, it'd be an album i love - as it is it does veer into mawkish balladry at points, but also has a beautiful one in Someone Like You, and Set Fire to the Rain comes close to that opening salvo too. It feels like the balladry has become more her thing, which is a shame, as there is some exciting pop soul which arguably suits her voice (which is magnificent) better that shows another path less trod which would have been more interesting - though probably less well reimbursed too.

A wonderful singer and songwriter, but production is too cheezy for me.

Pretty good. Doesn't really hold my attention, but great in the background. The singles I was familiar with and enjoy, but some of the other deep cuts were really good too. "I'll Be Waiting" is a stand out track, love the horns and multiple vocalists hitting the chorus.

I’ll be straight- I don’t like Adele. I think her range as a performer is limited (almost all she sings about is her ex) and her voice is all technicality with little power. It’s not fun or exciting to listen to, and I don’t understand her massive appeal. Listening to her mega album all the way through for the first time since it came out confirms this. Sorry. D

Music to accompany junk TV shows like The X Factor. The pathos is laughibly juvenile. It's no surprise that Heart FM plays this sort of music when a notable public figure passed away.

I guess I'm not the target audience here and she performed the duties of pop that was required. The album is tye template for pop in 2010s, basically of warbling mega chroneing. The imagery, ideas and music are all absent slave to the sole perfect voice. The tyle of the TV pop star generation a bit of a backstory but nothing creative. It doesn't do it for me it's not exciting it's kinda the beige wallpaper of pop. Soz

Remember Duffy? The Welsh singer who popped up the mid 2000s? She has those songs Warwick Avenue and Mercy which got pretty big radio play and I’m pretty sure she was a musical guest at one point on SNL. I had stock in her as I was sure she was going to blow up. She seemed an obvious choice to do a Bond theme too. Well she got market-corrected by Adele a couple years later and had this massive album and put out what many now consider the best Bond theme song. This album is undeniable. Nearly every song became a radio staple, it plays like a greatest hits record.

Well, this certainly is an album containing music. People who are capable of an intense emotional reaction to Adele mystify me. It's like being a connoisseur of porridge.

No question that Adele has one of the finest singing voices ever. I'm well familiar with this album and it's her finest moment. Someone Like You is a song for the ages, and Turning Tables kicks ass. Pretty sure she failed science though, 'cuz like.. how would you even set fire to rain.. like cuz it's water 'n' that? Know what I mean??

Nice piano tunes

I avoided this quite religiously when Adele was at the height of her powers. I now accept 21 as part of the musical landscape. With some crackers and a nice display of voice, it's pretty good. Set fire to the rain is a great song. Now, I wonder who would win the hypothetical karaoke battle between Adele and Amy Winehouse if they were only allowed to sing each other's tunes.

That voice - amazing. There's a lot of soul on this album. Rolling in the Deep is a modern classic for sure.

Most of the songs sounded familiar and were good, but just not entirely my cup of tea.

Some great songs, but the slower ones bore me a little

This is the first time I listened to an Adele album. Her voice is incredible. Take that voice, add a pound of emotion and stir and you’re bound to end up with a decent album. Her voice gets it to a 4 but I can’t get to 5 since the instruments aren’t really there. I compare this to Aladdin Sane that I rated 5, Adele and David are both great signers but on the cover song, for example, David let Mike Garson play to his best abilities. Adele keeps her backing group in the background. I have a 4 for her voice but wound’t give her another 4 without her pushing the envelope musically.

My co-judge predicted early in 2011 that "Rolling in the Deep" would be a massive hit after I downloaded it for my spinning class. I poo-pooed her but over the following weeks people's eyes lit up with recognition more and more whenever they heard the first few notes. There are several classic tracks here that we'll be hearing for decades & I'm impressed that a 21-year-old Adele wrote them all. It's rare these days to find a talented artist who writes great songs and also gets played to death on the radio. I wonder if the guy who was muse for these heart-breakers received any royalties. 9 out of 10 for me, the deduction due to a few songs being a bit to soft.

Ok there's no denying that she has a fab voice, I would say she's up there with Amy Winehouse in terms of talent, but they both target mainstream audiences (which I'm not) and kudos to her for selling a gazillion albums. The most interesting song here for me was her cover of Lovesong, which was originally done by the Cure, so there ya go. Since her voice here is the main attraction, the production features her voice very prominently in all the songs but its almost too amped up for me, but her legions of fans will no doubt disagree with me.

I love this album, I've listened to it 100s of times.

The internet is a blessing and a curse - it allows you to curate the media you consume in such a way that you can almost entirely tune out cultural zeitgeist and get lost in the things you enjoy. You can create a world where popular music doesn’t exist and when you turn on your 21st century equivalent of the “radio” (cellphone/streaming service) you hear your own personalized greatest hits. In many ways, it’s a beautiful thing, to me. In 2022, I don’t need to go into reasons why it’s a negative to create a internet bubble where you only hear what you want to hear. We know that situation all too well and have to deal with it from politicians, family members, co-workers. I am guilty of the first: I don’t have any interest in popular music. The vast majority of it has very little value to me, in terms of creativity or longevity. It’s meant to appeal to as many people as possible and be disposable. As such, I’ve managed to live in a music bubble where it’s rare that a popular artist like Adele permeates my auditory sphere. Don’t get me wrong, I know who Adele is and I’ve heard at least one of her songs in passing or when visiting friends/family or shopping at Target. But I don’t pay attention to it, because, well…I don’t really have any interest it. Look, I’m laying it all out on the line. This who I am. I’m aware of it, and try as I might, I can’t change that. I am a horrible music snob. The best I can do is admit when I’m wrong. Adele’s 21 is a very good record. Her voice is exceptional, the songs are well written and expertly played. It’s soulful, funky and emotionally resonant. I’m not sure you could ask for more from a pop record. I don’t find it to be an especially challenging or life changing record, but on this Saturday morning in mid-August 2022, it’s a pop record that worked for me, the horrible music snob, and I feel that is worth documenting.

So many big hits on one album. "Rolling In The Deep", "Someone Like You", "Set Fire To The Rain", "Rumour Has It", "Turning Tables".. This is popular music that is popular for good reasons. Adele's voice is really one of a kind. Wish she chose a different Cure song to cover though. Can you imagine a random "The Hanging Garden" cover in the middle of this album? Comedy gold.

Well I was bracing myself for cringe - but I actually ended up enjoying this one - starts strong - kind of sags in the middle and ends well. I definitely got bought over with the quite decent version of Lovesong. Not a perfect record but overall a good album.

What can one say? This has been a favourite of mine for some time now. It's crazy to think she was only 21 when this was recorded with so many absolute bangers. Many songs of this are in my regular rotation and it's a pleasure to listen to the album in full again since there are a few more songs I've forgotten about.

In her zenith, Adele makes a triumphant album full of power and emotion. Starts out with a ton of energy to dance to before moving to the piano ballad "Turning Tables" and acoustic-driven "Don't You Remember." It's a landmark in the neo-soul movement following the steps of Winehouse and Duffy. Even though there are more songs I like from 19, there's less filler here and I can enjoy the whole thing without wishing to skip a track. The production is so clean unlike other loud pop such as Lady Gaga or Katy Perry who could overwhelm the audience at times. Likewise 21 also contrasts with other R&B pop albums that focus too much on highlighting the singer's voice, by instead balancing Adele's voice with the flamboyant yet controlled instrumentation. To me, it sounds very natural, with almost no electronic devices here. You can probably perform the songs almost perfectly with just a school band (idk I've never been in one). In addition to modern R&B, I hear influences from gospel (not just the choir but also the funky piano), jazz, rock, country, and folk. There's something for everyone, making it a very accessible album. Many of the tracks have enough energy to keep audiences engaged for the full 48 minutes, with very hits well dispersed to keep people looking forward to something. I admit there's several ballads I'm not a fan of, but that's just personal preference and they're still amazing songs with their own moments. Going into this I thought "ah hell naw." But into Rolling in the Deep, I thought "this can actually be good". I still remember how we had to sing Rolling in the Deep at school and how me and the boys used to absolutely butcher this. Like howling dogs we "sang" this song because we got fucking tired of it. Those were the good times :') I mean it's very ballad heavy. The production is very good. It's beautiful, not my jam, but I hear quality when I hear quality. I might return and reevaluate when this Website gets an edit function. 4/5

"Vocal" albums are at the bottom of my list of popular music interests. The production on the vocals is over the top for my taste but she sounds great. Because she is great. The tracks take old sounds and make them sound modern. I didn't care for the cover song.

This is probably Adele’s best album. Emotionally it charts a journey from anger in the wake of a break up to the sheer sense of loss in the closing track. 21 incorporates a lot of gospel, R&B, and even some country influences to create something that goes beyond the standard powerhouse vocal album.

Great stuff, great voice, chill vibes

Adele really isn't my favorite artist but this album is undeniable in its power. Both her talents and also the sheer force that these songs shocked the airwaves with. Basically every single one of these songs was a hit radio single and all the white girls in college were belting them out every chance they got. Also it's impressive to hear a voice like that coming out of a ginger.

Adele really came into her own with this album.

Might be Adele's best album. (Although the new one - "30" - is really good too.) This is the one that launched her into the stratosphere and it's easy to see why - the album has four major hits on it and her singing is incredible throughout. It's a great showcase for her voice with some killer pop songwriting too. (Plus a cover of The Cure's "Lovesong"!)

One of the most attractive voices of all time. I love how the album starts with "Rolling In The Deep". Her voice and guitar are perfect and the kick drum breaking in at full intensity is so badass. She deserves all the accolades. 21 deserves all the praise!

Very well produced and preformed pastiche

Great voice, good songs, very solid album. Instrumentation is very bare bones which allows Adele's voice to shine, but the songs could be a little more interesting with a bit less of a minimalist approach to the instruments. Also the entire album is pretty emo - still good though.

I've never listened to an Adele album. But I was "Willing to TAKE the reeeeesk." It was good! I'm going to check out the rest of her albums.

Great album but it goes on for a little too long

This is possibly the most machine-tooled bid for pop stardom since Like A Virgin. Don't play the big singles and it still sounds unstoppable. Not actually an album I feel a great deal of affection for, perhaps the only album I can actually like of hers is 19, but respect.

Pour ceux qui ne seraient pas encore au courant, je suis extrêmement proche de Robert. Je n'ai de ce fait aucun mal à lui dire très franchement le fond de ma pensée quand les choses ne tournent pas comme j'aimerais qu'elles tournent. C'est pour cette raison que le jour où j'ai appris que celui-ci avait retiré Adele de son grimoire d'une édition à l'autre, je me rendis à son domicile, furax comme un lièvre. Je toquai douze fois à la porte, très bruyamment. Quelques secondes plus tard, j'entendis son fils Mike Ladd demander avec sa voix aiguë : "C'est qui ? Papa m'a dit de pas ouvrir aux gens que je connais pas..." Je continuai de frapper sans répondre jusqu'à ce que le bambin ouvre. Je le poussai alors violemment contre le mur et allai trouver Robert pour lui en coller une belle.

Le retrait de la liste des 1001 d'Adele est largement compréhensible. On ne peut la comparer à Sepultura, Ice Cube, Mike Ladd ou encore aux cinq albums de Tom Waits. L'album 21 est très sympa attention, mais il faut savoir raison garder, peut-être dans quelques années une fois sa discographie plus solide, Adele pourra esperer réaliser avec les mastodontes présents dans cette liste magnifique concoctée par Robert.

This is the Adele the cemented her diva status. Back when she was still hungry and hurt and full of ambition. Beyond Adele's heartbreak and exceptional voice, the secret sauce here is producer Rick Rubin. Apparently only something like 5 of the songs Rubin produced made the album, none of which became hits. But these songs shape the album, and are the ones that remind me of Amy Winehouse and great Motown songs. I find myself longing to hear the Rick Rubin produced versions of the five ubiquitous worldwide hits. They're probably similar to the ones we all know by heart, and only Adele can hear the differences.

Evoking Motown, The Wall of Sound and classic '60s soul, Adele's 21 is a really strong album, more enjoyable and impactful than 25 which has appeared on this list also. The up tempo tracks are terrific power pop and the ballads are evocative and, despite the luscious production, sound stripped back, raw and emotional, allowing Adele's incredible vocals to shine. In fact, there are times when this album is just overwhelmingly sad and mournful - whether that makes it easy to listen to or not will depend on the listener's mood. A surprise hit and an enormously influential one at that, shaping much of the decade's sound.

Different album, but Stevie Wonder must be pissed!! Anyway, so going into this I thought I just listen to it the background while getting ready for the next day, well prepared to give it a 4 because everyone knows this is a great album. I was even considering a 3 just because I had heard is so much and was possibly sick of it. But, it is a great album and actually hooked. I began to appreciate what a story it tells. Will definitely go back.

I was conscious of Adele and her meteoric rise, but never listened to anything I didn't glean from osmosis, like hearing "Rolling In the Deep" in several commercials. Gotta admit, she's good. Great voice control, very emotive. You can almost hear her smirk on "Rumour Has It". Good mix of styles of music (man, that bossa nova cover of "Lovesong" works pretty well), so much so that the one song that's country-esque makes me think she might've had something in that genre if she came up in the 70s. And in America. Favorite tracks: "Lovesong", "Rumour Has It", "Set Fire to the Rain"

Sounds like a superstar in the best tradition of soulful bluesy pop singers. Smooth, bluesy with a slight edge. Excellent songs and great interpretations (Cure and Dylan).

i've heard this album about 3 times in my life. that's about 2.5 times too many. sure, she can sing and has a nice voice, but there is nothing new or exciting here whatsoever. great marketing and above average production can polish a turd of an album for todays clientele. obviously a clientele that liked to bee spoon fed crap.

Amazing voice, she is a powerhouse for sure. I wish that the recording studio was willing to adjust her voice less, as it is very evident that the vocal track has been poked and prodded until every aspect of Adele's voice is in pitch, and it just gives this really eerie, unnatural vibe, not dissimilar from a drum machine being "too in time". She does not need to be auto-tuned ad nauseam, and I think natural tones would help give this album some sort of identity. The music is pretty vanilla once you get past the point of Adele having a great voice. There's really nothing else to stick around for. I thought He Won't Go had a fun sounding arrangement and ventured off the beaten path, and the gospel take on I'll Be Waiting was pretty charming; 21 was a bit of a snooze fest aside from these takes. Fave tracks: He Won't Go, I'll Be Waiting, Lovesong

Despite being criminally overplayed, this is actually a pretty decent album. Adele's singing talent is remarkable, although a few of her vocal flourishes can get a little grating. The production is also quite good, a minimalist approach was taken here, which I think was the right call, to really focus on her vocals. The instrumental performances are solid, adding emotion in the right places to the songs and the mixing is great. The slight country edge is a nice touch too. A few of these songs are just a bit too cheesy, and I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the lyrics. I'll give it a solid 3, it does deserve to be here but I think it was released about 50 years too late to actually be anything groundbreaking. Fav Tracks: Fire To The Rain, Lovesong

A "perfect" voice that sounds like a million other perfect voices. A collection of generic, factory-produced AOR. Offers very little that is new or interesting.

for an album i skimmed through in about 5 minutes i have a lot of opinions. most of them bad. the production of this made every instrument sound fake. don't know if that's the desired effect but it sounded shit. singers who's apparent main purpose is to show off their really good singing voice is up there with country music for my most loathed music forms. fair play for making the most of your god given ability to wail, i'd just prefer it if the song was sung without the unnecessary showy bits and displays of 'range'. i suppose we've got to thank simon cowell for the talent show thing where you contort your face, do a knee bend and stick your hand out like darth vader strangling someone as you do the heartfelt bit of the song. to the albums credit, it does have her big ones on it. However they've been absolutely rinsed by every man and his dog so despite this being the first time i have ever actively chosen to listen to adele, i probably know all of the words for about 4 of these tacks on here. i did not enjoy this.

Es un disco que todos deberían escuchar alguna vez. Nota alta. Mejores canciones para mí: "Rolling in the Deep", "Rumour Has It", "Set Fire to the Rain", "Take It All" y "Someone like You".

Just boppin. Good soul-pop that gives me nostalgia for high school and simpler days.

A tight enough album with a decent variety, just not my general cup of tea.

- Very good voice obviously - Bass heavy in the first song - Turning Tables has a lovely piano riff - Soft with powerful vocal sections - He Won’t Go has a nice rhythm - Definitely a lot of breakup songs

A slight disappointment. Back in 2011, I do remember thinking this sophomore effort was a bit of a letdown, similar to how I felt about Leelah James: raw, gifted talent that was smoothed over by professional production, perhaps a bit too much, and in that process something “magical” was lost. Still, she’s just too talented to cast aside, and there are definitely some gems here at a level that will be choice cuts likely for the rest of her career.

First listen. Not unpleasant but otherwise totally anodyne. Don't need to listen again.

Not too bad but I started to lose interest by the end of the album. Adele can sing and the production is great but it all just feels too safe.

Reminds me of me ex

Adele comes through on the singles and cover, but is let down by the production too many other times. 21 is an unfortunately flat album, and it can't seem to decide what it wants to do musically. That's not a recipe for success when every arrangement relies on the lead vocals: They're the only thing holding the tracklist together and are not given nearly enough space.

This is a good album and totally deserves to be on the list, couple of great songs on it, rolling in the deep and set fire to the rain would be two of my favourites from Adele. But due to my own personal preferences this really isn’t an album I’d choose to listen to. Therefore only gets 3 stars.

I really don't like Adele. I find this so incredibly mundane, uninspired and utterly uninteresting. Truthfully, did not listen, but know enough songs from their chronic overplaying that I know my opinion.

she's real good in what she does

I have mad respect for Adele’s voice. I had to give this one a 4 though because compared to her next album it’s just a little short.

I'll be honest, I prematurely turned my nose up when I saw this was today's album but there are some fricken excellent tunes on here. The production is an easy five stars and her voice is near on perfect too. Obviously the subject matter doesn't resonate but that's on me. He Won't Go is a perfect song, all I could think about was watching a conductor lead a studio band through the arrangement, sounds so so tight. No surprises that Rick Rubin had a hand in this.

Fantastic album - wide variety of soulful, emotive songwriting and Adele's vocal performance is wonderful.

I don’t want to hear it. This fucking album. So many incredible songs on one album. AND SHE WAS 21. Yes I cried listening to this even after all the times I’ve heard these songs.

More Adele. She can sing, but I'm not engaged. Whatever the reviewers who describe her voice as enigmatic or magical can hear, I definitely do not. I hear a stage-school show-singer belting uninteresting ballads in a mid-Atlantic yowl. Millions disagree with me, but I'm ok with that.

Music isn't bad. She has a nice voice. But the lyrics seem childish. They don't resonate with me.

The year is 2011, and everything is going wrong. You get into college and say goodbye to your high school friends, then try to convince yourself that you fit in with a group of equally awkward strangers. You date the first guy who says he loves you, not learning yet that people are fully capable of saying things they don't mean--and of acting the exact opposite. You're slut-shamed by a group of uptight college girls for sex you aren't having. By "you", of course, I mean me. Because 21 was my essential coming of age album. Are there coming of age albums with better songwriting? Yes, definitely. Are there coming of age albums with better vocals? Very, very few. But there's something magical about the alchemy of this album's elements that Adele, in my view, has never been able to quite match before or since 21. Of course, that could be the nostalgia talking. But this was the album that resonated with key points in my life. I'd dedicate "Don't You Remember" to fairweather friends ("When will I see you again?"), "Turning Tables" to my shitty exes ("I won't let you close enough to hurt me"), and "Someone Like You", my fave album track to absolutely no one. Rare is the album that's emotionally resonant and relatable, even on songs about experiences you've never had. But the emotional truth of this album just puts you right there in it. Apologies to Adele for taking so long to get on board the hype train of this album, since I discovered it for myself nearly a year after its release. 21 deserves all the hype it got and more.

It’s an excellent album - strong throughout and then Someone Like You drops at the end. Miserable song but her voice is immense.

Plenty of solid hits and thankfully more upbeat than the swathes of depressing wallowing that followed.
