Still a gem. Loved it when it was first released, still great.

Take it for what it is, a collection of club singles to be spun, mixed and danced to, not a coherent album to listen to with undivided attention. Not a bad piece of music, but maybe it's a bit misplaced on this list.

Glimpses of the greatness to come.

I love Revolution 909. Rock'n Roll is annoying, and the album is a bit too long.

Boring, sparse. Not at all like the Laurent Garnier French techno I listened to in Parisian clubs in ‘96/‘97. Disappointing.

Some great beats and dynamics, but a lot of poor ones as well with a long run time. The issue is after 1 minute, the beats become pointless to listen to.

Electronic continues to be a genre which I don't understand and fail to see the appeal in. At times 7 minutes of the same 10-20 seconds beat looped endlessly

this album exists as a groundwork for their remixed, so why not have one of their early live albums on this list instead? you have to be a masochist to listen to Around the World for 7 minutes, jesus christ.

Every track is a banger. Hard to believe this is 25 years old and to remember that this was pretty revolutionary when it came out. The video for revolution 909 is still one of my favourites.

Daft Punks debut album. Not as good as some of their latter work. Some tracks come across as filler almost. Few great tracks with plenty of average ones.

Great, weird, unique

Quite a few great songs on here, but also a collection of dull repetitive ones. I like all the hits and I sort of dislike the rest save for a few sleepers like Alive. Daft Punk hit with a sound of their own that was exciting and emulated in the clubs at the time. This music got a ton of asses shaking.

-This is VERY good focus/get shit done music -The transition into the drumbeat on WDFK was DOOOOPE -I definitely feel "in the zone" -Da Funk - oh! I've heard this! The production on this album is very very good. Clean, but has juice. -This does NOT feel like something from 1997. More like 2007 onward. So supremely ahead of its time. Impeccable dance music. -RnR is a bit grating -Admittedly some of the later tracks are less notable/feel more dated -Overall this was great. I'm not sure if I would rate it a 3 or a 4.

Discovery will keep the #1 place for my Daft punk albums but the music style is already present in this album.

Favorite tracks: Da Funk, Fresh, Around the World

Quite familiar with DaftPunk but not the whole album. Well-crafted dance music, which is a bit monotonous in places, but probably does the job when you want to dance. Best in class.

While "Discovery" is definitely the more consistent album (and understandably most people's favorite Daft Punk album) this album just has much higher high points for me, and puts you in a trance for an hour. If you don't like that, I'm honestly sorry for you!

Solid 4. Da Funk and Around the World are fantastic.

Mostly pretty average Daft Punk considering how good some of the later stuff is. But a few good moments.

A balancing act between brilliance and bloat. My soft spot for the group really wants to rate it higher, but so much of it simply needed to be cut, particularly the long run-time on tracks. This is best experienced in small doses.

I'm a simple person, I see French Disco Robots, I give a 5.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO. This is an album I have loved for so many years. They took the world by storm and laid the foundation for the electronica explosion that was to come. Around The World has the best video.

4.3 + Not so much an EDM record as an exploration of sonic textures. Daft Punk have always been supreme composers, knowing how to create suspense, introduce themes and build to climax. The best moments on the record take singular sonic elements and manipulate them like putty, warping them and twisting them and compressing them into fascinating shapes and sizes (e.g “Rollin’ and Scratchin’”).

Daft Punk works best in short bursts and when you're in the right mood. The singles work for me, the rest I can live without.

Daft Punk is partially why I'm doing this whole thing.In the wake of their retirement I realized that I didn't like much EDM aside from them and was hoping to maybe find something similar and other albums and artists along the way. Anyway, this is probably a 4 on the enjoyability scale for me. Discovery is my go to. This is still really cool and Daft Punk gets the 5 because I say so

Amazing

This was my first intro to DP as a whole album and I loved it. The creative use of chopped and warped samples is unparalleled, and I really enjoy digging through the sources and discovering music that way. At times, there are tracks that sound a bit like experimental noise techno, but overall it's a great album to play and come back to every so often.

I think I can sat I enjoyed it, but it wasn't entirely for me. The production is immaculate, even today sounds great coming out of speakers. Just runs a little long for my taste. Favorite tracks: "Da Funk", "Around the World", "Alive"

Boring and overrated, but not absolute trash. There are some solid grooves on here. Maybe I just need some molly to appreciate it.

I do like me some Daft Punk but this album feels a bit mediocre these days. Certainly a few interesting bits here and there and I certainly am into Da Funk and Around the World but everything else just feels a bit samish.

Hmmmm, it's a little bit basic for my tastes. I want a splash of prog with my electronica, as a rule. Having said that, "Da Funk" is an absolute tune, and the music video came out around the time my family finally got cable, so I've got a lot of affection for the sad bloodhound man in a leg cast.... Fave track "Da Funk", duh.

House music is definitely not for me. I started out thinking "well, this is not my cup of tea and sounds sort of boring, but at least it doesn't sound too bad in itself, so I can have it play in the background". But it's suuuper repetitive and the longer it went on (and it goes on for way way too long), the more annoying it got for me. I made it to track 7 and then had to stop.

Really not a fan of this, although I can see why people like it.

Banging

One of my favorite things about Daft Punk is their desire to break their songs down to reveal their structure to give us an insight to their process. They are also keen to share their influences within their work as shown by ‘Teachers.’ This lends their music a sense of approachability and enthusiasm. Homework is Daft Punk’s first major label record and was one of the first wide reaching French house records. The music is driving, playful, and minimalist in parts.

Songs are often too long and many repetitive beats and sounds grate. If you're gonna put a Daft Punk album on a list like this, it should be Discovery.

A mix of French house, techno and house but with tunes catchier than the clap from a Parisian lady of the night. Sounds just as good listening to this by yourself as it does in a club. Fucking great. Best Tracks: Da Funk; Around The World; Alive

Ya know ya love it

This was my first Daft Punk album back in the day and I thought it was SO AWESOME. This is back when it was the only one. I still love me some DP, but they grew a lot over the years and this album has aged TERRIBLY. A lot of it is headache inducing. Still, I appreciate its importance and I remember how it once made me feel.

I had heard a few songs from Daft Punk prior to their 2013 release of Random Access Memories. I listened to that album as my full introduction to the band. Homework has a couple songs that I have heard before ("Da Funk", "Around the World"). "Around the World" is the track I like the best from this album. I did not enjoy most of the tracks on this album. I don't understand the repetition. In some cases, the repetition goes on long enough, and is of such short clips that it feels like a broken record ("High Fidelity"). Maybe there's something that I'm missing.

4/17/2022 Today's Album: "Homework" by Daft Punk - Being the first album by legendary EDM outfit Daft Punk, this is really showing me their roots as musicians. This is essentially the spiritual successor to the Chemical Brothers, being that the album is mostly composed of remixed dance music and samples with very little music. Coming out in the tail end of the 90s, I would have to imagine that this is one of the first albums to really work with style and I think in a lot of aspects, it pioneers that sound in a fantastic way. The nature of EDM and club music is that it's just going to get boring after a little while. The shuffle beats and claps get repetitive after a while and although this is not seen as a negative by most fans of the genre since it is being danced to for long periods of time (often on drugs), I think I just have never been able to sit through a song that is essentially just a looping beat. However, I think that is only somewhat of a problem on this record simply because of how great the production is on the beats. There are repetitive moments, but they usually are really great to listen to and it isn't long before there is some sort of mild switch-up. I think my favorite parts of this album is when they really go off the rails with their instrumentation and let some absolutely disgusting midi synth noises in like in the last half of Da Funk. I love the distorted arpeggios that open the song Fresh alongside the sound of crashing waves. Around the World is obviously really well known, but I really think it drags on for too long (almost 7 minutes) and the only thing you really get out of it is a geometry dash instrumental with the line "Around the Wooooorld" repeated like 150 times. It's not a bad song by any means but just gets really grating after a bit. Rollin' and Scratchin' is a more dark take on the dance music they had been showing off thus far and although I think the 7.5 minute runtime is reasonable for this track given the experimentation it's going for, I really don't think it translates well out of a drugged out club scene. Technically impressive, yes, but would I listen to it more than once? no. Teachers is a little weird in terms of the vocal, but idk I kind of fuck with it for whatever reason it's just groovy enough to justify itself. The track Rock'n Roll is actually really fucking grating and goes on for way too long. If there wasn't some other redeeming parts of this album, this song would singlehandedly make it not worth it to listen to this. The rest of the songs on the album are decent to listen to and I think the closer Funk Ad is really nice, but none of the tracks leave very much of an impact at this point, feeling like Daft Punk has shown their hand at this point in the album. Overall, I'm looking forward to hearing their later albums in full because if there's anything I can say about this one, it's that there is a ton of promise, but the runtime is simply too long and many of these songs that run for 6-7 minutes could be compressed into some great 3 minute tracks. Listen to this one if you like EDM and if you aren't, maybe just play Around the World and vibe for a little bit. Score: 7/10 Promising, but either bloated or boring. hard this one as some of it is really just repeats, but some repeats are oh so good. the good is a solid 4, but some of the tracks bring it down a bit. Seems like some isolated DJ tracks which bout be better in the sum of their parts which is when they shine.

Alright but not my style

Electric

Wow, this is boring as fuck. I was expecting to give a ‘controversial’ 4 as all my friends seem to love Daft Punk but I’m not so sure. I had to skip a few outros to make it to the end. A couple of cool songs but as an album this was a real chore.

Some great vibes, some standout tunes, some great experiments that succeded, one miserable, painful failure. Rollin And Scratchin brings the whole album down for me, down significantly, because it was painful to listen to and I am half convinced it caused me a headache. Really cannot overlook that, no matter how great Around the World is or how much of a pleasant Suprise Fresh and Teachers were

Started off the bat as a strong 5 contender with excelent build up to "Da Funk", which is straight-up amazing. However, later experiments proved to be fatal - both for the rating and listeners ears. Had it not been for tracks like "Rock'n Roll", it would have been almost perfect. Overall a great album for vibin' d-_-b Highlight: "Da Funk"

Szkoda, że takie albumy też znajdują się w tym zestawieniu, bo nie ma tu mowy o ocenie go według tych samych kryteriów, co rockowych hitów. Nie do końca jest to też album odpowiedni do słuchania go przy komputerze w samotności, o wiele bardziej doceniłbym go gdzieś na imprezie, gdzie można do tego potańczyć. Żeby być fair wobec reszty zestawienia, na tej płycie są 3 bardzo dobre utwory, które można słuchać w warunkach codziennych, a aby docenić resztę, trzeba już trochę o tych utworach poczytać. Urzekł mnie fakt, że na jednej płycie mogą znaleźć się te same utwory, tylko jeden z nich puszczony od tyłu (Da Funk i Funk Ad). Znalazł się tu utwór nagrany live, nawiązania do ówczesnej kultury tanecznej, wtrącenia do amerykańskiego radia i przez całość albumu przewija się (szkoda, że w tak małej liczbie fragmentów) świetna funkowa gitara. Daję zaokrąglone w górę 3, mając nadzieję, że Discovery też się w tym zestawieniu znajdzie.

Jak ogólnie lubię Daft Punk to po tym albumie widać, że do wielkości trzeba dojść. Krążek brzmi raczej jak zlepek różnych baz i bitów do dalszego miksowania niż prawdziwe utwory. Może trochę też denerwować przesadna repetetywność utworów, zwłaszcza że niektóre trwają ponad 7minut. Rollin' & Scratchin' ma tak kakofoniczne dxlźwieki, że nie byłem w stanie przesłuchać do końca. Around the world znałem i wciąż dobre, chyba najlepsze z albumu. Daftendirekt całkiem ciekawe, pewnie przez to że ma chociaż odrobinę wokalu. Rozumiem, że płyta miała duży wplyw na muzykę klubową i elektroniczną, ale w mojej opinii jest to ich najsłabsza płyta. 2.5/5

Some nice tracks, but got a bit annoying towards the end (e.g. rock & roll).

There were some good songs on here, and I'm normally quite into Daft Punk, but overall this didn't do it for me. As many have said previously, most songs - even the good ones - are too long. Some songs are downright annoying and I didn't finish them (High Fidelity and Rock'n Roll come to mind). 3 stars for the good ones, which for me actually includes Around the world!

I do not like electronic music as a rule. This isn't as bad as most because how can you not like that 4 beat dance music rhythm. Great if you're actually dancing though. Otherwise, repetitive and it gets old quick especially because its so long. 2 or 3 to be decided after another listen.

I needed a good reason to relisten to this album. Then I listened to it and remembered why I hadn't listened to it in so long. Droning loops no longer hold up in modern music, but it's undeniable how influential this album has been on modern day music.

Let's be real: Daft Punk is one of the most overrated groups of the last 20 years or so. I was never into the club scene, and MDMA has never been my drug of choice, so naturally none of this makes any sense to me. It just repeats ad nauseum for 75 minutes. Yeah, an hour and a quarter. If it was half as long it'd be alright tbh. Around the World is a catchy little tune... it just gets its point across in about 2min then goes for another 5. Da Funk isn't bad either - both those songs would be totally listenable if they'd just trimmed the fucking fat. I think there were radio edits (I remember hearing both those songs on the radio, and no way would a 7min song make it onto pop radio) but the album punishes us with full-length versions instead. The rest of the album is forgettable, just b-grade rehashes of the same idea. All that aside, I do have to grudgingly give this a 2/5 - it never actively made me spit chips. It just droned on mindlessly in the background.

More french electronica? No thanks. I can at least appreciate the impact Daft Punk have had internationally as artists, points for that. But this is not for me and I hate it.

Too long and not really my thing

Has the excitement of listening to your drippy faucet go "doink, doink, doink" gotten old over time? Why not switch it up with an album by Daft Punk? Daft Punk's 'Homework' has that incessant drone-on IRRITATING BEAT MAGIC you crave. This album provides nearly TWO FULL HOURS of DULL-DOINKING paired with CRINGEWORTHY ANNOYINGNESS guaranteed to drive you nuts.

“We have homework!?!?” Nobody likes homework. And getting through Daft Punk’s “Homework” definitely felt as grueling as a five-page essay or 50 calculus questions. Daft Punk deliver some cool sounds at times, but they’re driven into the ground on songs that go on for too long. At a rave or club, they get mixed quicker, but on a Daft Punk album they go on and on with mild teasing breaks just returning to the already overdone. “Around the World,” at over seven minutes, is the worst example. “Rolling and Scratching” is longer, but less repetitive, yet also has none of the same hook. And by the time you get to the annoying slide whistle-like sound on “Burnin’,” you’ve given up all hope and there are still 10 more problems, it’s 2 a.m., and your teacher is checking for completion in 6 hours.

I definitely didn’t love every song. But the good ones made me wish I was in a crowded smoky dance club and very high and I actually don’t want to be doing any of those things.

A little disappointed in the album I thought it would be better than it was I just found it rather average with one good song

Decent album. First half is pretty good. Second half not so much. Didn't hold up over the course of time but changed the game during it's time of release.

This isn't an album of songs. If you go into it expecting that, you're going to be disappointed. I sure was. The (very) few songs that incorporated something resembling a melody line simply took four bars of a hook and repeated it ad nauseam. See "Da Funk" for reference. What it IS, though, is a masterclass on how to build a beat. These tracks are layered and complex and fine tuned to a precision edge. It is the ultimate loop record for DJs to create mashups with. I have a good buddy who was an acclaimed mashup artist (until he got sick of fielding cease & desist orders and takedown requests). He used the hell out of these beats to great affect. Unfortunately, the tracks don't stand on their own and a whole record of them is exhausting to listen to.

Legendary album full of bangers. Only feels dated because it's such an iconic album of an era. A bit long for listening straight through, but doesn't really get stale while doing so and it can be broken into songs easy. Yeah, it doesn't take much to understand why they rose to such extraordinary heights as a group.

Great album very funky first time listening to a true retro funk album

Had to skip “Around the World” because I value not having that one stuck in my head for the rest of the week, but yeah, Daft Punk Good. Sitting down with an album from them was a weird experience because that’s really not the context where I’m usually hearing them, but as always with EDM/adjacent it’s pretty much ideal focusing music for me.

Their second album blows this out of the water but if you look at it on it's own, it's still a very good album.

It's a classic set of banging house beats and sample work. I prefer daft punk's later work as this is just a really good album that sticks to fundamentals of its genre, but it's great.

It's probably really fun to listen to in a different setting, but just listening to it as an album front to back was unpleasant.

It’s alright but very niche and nowhere near daft punk’s best

Whisks me back to MTV2/The Box days. "Sounds you can see" material. The visuals of the music videos are part of the experience for me. Great background-working music, but it is a frustrating "sit with a glass of whisky and focus on the album" listen if you're not in the mood.

I've never listened to a Daft Punk album straight through. I certainly have enjoyed the singles I've heard, in various settings. I was just served Justice so I guess the album generator feels I still need to dance more, Frenchly. Daftendirekt is a super strong start and I'm loving everything, some familiar some not, up until track 8, Rollin' & Scratchin' which is not really suited to home listening. Sometimes noise is just noise. That and the next few tracks are less interesting, and dare I say overlong. Overall I enjoyed the album less than I expected. Beginning and end 1-7, 14-16: 4.5, middle 8-13: 2.

I saw this and thought, 'Oh hell yeah!', oh how wrong you were, hour ago Dave. I remember liking Discovery a whole lot and parts of Random Access memories (Get Lucky fully excluded, god damn...) but maybe I'm going to have to revisit those if my feelings towards this is anything to go by. Even 'Around The World', which I got to thinking there was going to be a bright light here just felt... bland? Sorry Daft Punk, this is not the one.

I'll say it... I think Daft Punk is overrated. I loved their work on the Tron soundtrack, and stuff like around the world will always be a bop. But the rest sounds like a talented kid using the DJ button on a electric keyboard to me?

I never liked Daft Punk. I saw this album pop up, saw it included Around the World and Da Funk and thought 'Hey, maybe my music taste has changed enough over the years to enjoy this' I was wrong.

All time classic French house album. So many bangers.

Not amazing, but repetitive

There aren't many classic dance albums that deserve to be on this list but this one definitely does. Da Funk especially is one of my favourite tracks. Too long to listen to in one go though

Classic

Feeling a tad sheepish putting such an acclaimed album from such a beloved artist so low, but this really isn't my thing and I was actively willing it to be over by the end. I might have missed out by listening at my desk, but even if I'd been in a club, I would have probably sunk the nearest jello shot and got out of there. The singularly most exciting moment for me was when the beat kicked in over the spoken loop in "Daftendirekt" and caught me off guard. It's a shame that it was about one minute into this 74 minute album. Across the rest of it, there's a near-total absence of melody, progression and narrative to these pieces: instead, the album revolves around standard 4/4 disco-house beats with looped instrumentation and electronics fizzing in and out, with most tracks averaging 6-7 minutes in length. I just don't know why there wasn't any more regulation, or editing going on. There might have been some interesting production techniques every now and again, but it was only enough to get a passing nod before it's then recycled again... and again... and again. Yes, this is all in the nature of house music, and Daft Punk's enduring legacy has solidified "Homework" as a milestone in the genre. Personally, I just didn't get it. Listening to it felt like being a test subject in a 90s laboratory for about six months, with these daft punks trying to get me to mate with a rat. It's not going to happen guys, ALRIGHT? Jesus!

Amazing. I'm a bit biased, being a fan of Daft Punk, but strong album through and through.

Other than the track Around The World and a couple of others, it's a pretty average album lacking in variety.

Played this album a lot in the 90's, tempted to give it 5 stars - but to these middle aged ears some of the tracks are just to repetitive.

I'm not the biggest Electronica fan. Still, it's easy to see how this album was ahead of its time when it came out. You can really recognize a lot of musical themes that are present in this genre today. So that was cool, even if I didn't like the music quite as much as other labums

My bias here is I love Daft Punk and Da Funk opened my eyes to dance music. This album is brilliant. Not at their imperial peak, some tracks are filler. But it also has Da Funk, Around the World, Phoenix, Oh Yeah, Rollin and Scratchin, and Alive. A daft, punky mess indeed.

Not many French House artists can make me tap my toes like Daft Punk. Really well executed and has aged really, really well. A joy to listen to.

Homework by Daft Punk (1997) This is a notably curious record—French electronic/techno ‘house music’, basically consisting of amateurishly robotic dance beats. It puts the “less” in “mindless”. A review of the lyrics is kind of fun, since most of the tracks are instrumentals, and the remaining ones treat words as either meaningless rhythmic repetitions or, in one case (“Teachers”), a mere litany of recording artists who influenced the duo. It would be interesting to hear the Litany of the Saints in this fashion (not really, although in some celebrations of the Church’s litanies, I’ve gotten a similar vibe. And who knows? Some of the saints might think it’s kinda cool!). Musically, it’s all about grooves, and some of them are quite good (e.g., “Around the World” - but it’s too damn long!). Sometimes (“Daftendirekt”) the meter is confusing—a good dancer might be embarrassed to discover a minute into a track that he/she is boogying to the wrong woogy. The dentist’s drill background track “Rock ‘n Roll” is definitely NOT rock ‘n roll. Occasionally (“Revolution 909”) the artists provide their own dance club sonic ambience, with sorry effect. This music needs some vocal overlay (like from, oh, I don’t know, Pharrell Williams?). But that would require melody; and on this album, that’s in short supply. The biggest weakness is the lack of (or slow pace of) development and variation in these admittedly creative tracks (a minor 20-second exception starting at 6:05 on “Rollin’ and Scratchin’”). Hypnotic cohesion is basically all you get from Daft Punk. It is daft. And the listener has been suitably punked. Keep the first half of “Around the World” and throw away the rest of this album. I’ve done my duty. If you play this record on a long drive, you run the risk of killing someone. 2/5

Not a Techno/Dance music fan really, can see some merit in this but not one I would have in my collection. "Around The World" and "Da Funk" obviously a favourites but the rest is much of a muchness for me, sorry to say.

An amazing house album. Wonderful on its own but more than anything teases the amazing works that were to come.

Listening to the whole album it's amazing in hindsight that they've had such mainstream success Obvious call-outs to Da Funk and Around the World which arguably owed as much of their success to their compelling videos as they do to the tracks themselves

Again I only knew the 2 famous tracks, but I do vividly remember seeing the Around The World video for the first time and thinking it was brilliant. Album is a little too ambient for my tastes but still solid.

Do I know how important this album was at the time? Yes. A couple of the tracks absolutely banged. Has the album aged well? Oh hell no. It's like being nostalgic for a Nokia 3410, great memories, but you don't want to own one now.

It's a banger to be fair

I'm a bit suprised I'm fine with such strong rhythm. Probably heard Revolution 909 in some fashion show or some other scenarios. Prefer this type of music over those experimental indies even if this one does not have much lyrics either (rolls eyes). But still, requires me a lot of patience to reach Around the World track... ah, the quirky modern music world.

Perfect background music for doing homework.

I know this album really well. Let's give it a spin... More disjointed than I remembered - some of it is aggressive and repetitive in a way that I'm not sure translates to today's listener. That said, it's for sure a groundbreaking album that's set off in a direction that others have followed.

This is more like a 4.7 out of 5 but I'll round up. Not at Discovery levels yet but as a debut album this is up there with some of the best of all time. Da Funk is amazing song that I can listen to at any time and it's one of a few like that here.

I understand that this isn’t designed to be listened to while sitting on my sofa struggling with the crossword, but… It’s got the distinctive sound of Daft Punk, but hardly any of the catchy tunes they’d come up with later.

The duo indulged in the most artificial/intellectual tricks of various styles of production (hip hop, ambient, funk, industrial, house). Their genre of melodic and exuberant instrumental music was hardly innovative compared with the disco music of their parents. (7/10) FT: Around the World

The tunes aren't all as good as some of the songs off of RAM or Daft Punk; but Jesus, this is the pure, distilled EDM energy of a buzzsaw. Some of the songs do slightly overstay their welcome and run out of ideas, but for the best part this slaps start to finish.

Tällainen konemusa käy minulle monesti aika junnaavaksi, kun kuuntelee vähänkin pidemmän aikaa. Vaikka tässä oli hyvää menoa, niin alkoi puuduttaa loppua kohden. Varsinkin tokalla kierroksella alkoi jo hyvissä ajoin odottamaan levyn loppua. Mutta ei tässä nyt sen kummempaa vikaakaan ollut, peruskolkki.

Tämä vanha Daft Punk menee vähän samaan kategoriaan kuin esim. Chemical Brothers. Varmasti aikanaan ihan hienoa ja kokeellista elektrolooppausta, jonka tahtiin voisi mielellään heilutella raajoja yökerhossa kolmen promillen humalassa. Albumia kuunnellessa en vaan valitettavasti pääse oikeaan mielentilaan jotta tästä suuremmin nauttisi. Hittibiisit Da Funk ja Around the World erottuvat vähän muuten niin harmaasta jumputusmassasta.

Great album.

Really thought this would be more interesting than it is. Lots of big beat sameness, less funkyness than i was hoping for. Everything is too long too.

I really like a good amount of Daft Punk's music but I've never been able to get into this album. It's super repetitive and some of the beats get annoying but there's something about it that doesn't make me hate it. It's still really well produced and the music isn't bad it's just not meant for focused listening. Fav songs: Da Funk, Alive

Random Access Memories is my only frame of reference. This sounds similar but less fully realized. Makes sense since I think this is their first record. What I like about RAM is that it feels like pop songs. Less drawn-out electronica than what is happening here. Still, though, it's good "up the pace while you're working" music - which is what happened when I listened to it. Isaac's sitter must wonder what's happening in here, with me listening the George Michael and Daft Punk back-to-back.

I don't really listen to this type of music often, but there's something about Daft Punk that I like. Because I don't listen to the genre, I can't really critique or assess it. I don't know what Daft Punk does differently or better or whatever - but it's good.

Que ce fut long et dur de venir à bout de cet album... J'ai d'ailleurs dû m'y reprendre à six fois pour y arriver. Ce n'est pas une surprise, Robert Dimery choisit en général le deuxième pire album de chaque artiste pour l'intégrer à sa liste des 1001 ; ce fut une fois encore le cas avec Homework. J'ai à ce propos envoyé un message à Robert qui ne devrait plus tarder à me répondre.

Aujourd'hui je pense avoir enfin découvert les réelles motivation de Robert. En effet, Robert est un ennemi de la France. Sa technique pour nous faire sombrer: selectionner quelques artistes français seulement, et proposer seulement le moins bon album de leur discographie. Ainsi, l'auditeur décérebré et inculte du générateur pense avoir affaire aux quelques meilleurs albums issus de l'héxagone, alors qu'il n'écoute en fait qu'un condensé de musique moyenne voir mauvaise. Vous ne me croyez pas? Dans ce cas pourquoi Robert a enregistré un album en son nom, disponible dans cette liste, au cours duquel il fredonne dans un français hésitant, sur fond de guitare desaccordé? "Chaime le France, c'est mön pays", sérieusement... Je vous tiendrai au courant dès que j'aurais discuté des retombées d'une telle decouverte avec mon camarade robniel.

Maybe it shouldn't surprise me that dance music at the start of the 21st century was made in its politically austere and depersonalised image. Though this accrues credibility for turning up in art-house fancy dress, it's still 120 BPM as defensive posture, bodily pleasure as algorithm. Of course, the robot costumes mean such crticism can always be spun as part of the act. To that, I say spin is also so 21st century. So there. And even if that's true, such smart-arsery doesn't bring the bodily pleasures any closer to existence--at least not when listening at home.

Daft Punk! Heel bekende naam uit mijn tienerjaren. Ik kan me voorstellen dat we met vrienden helemaal wild zouden gaan op dit album. Heden ten dagen klinkt de muziek ietwat simpel, maar ondanks dat heel erg relaxt. Eigenlijk toch wel geniaal hoe ze zo'n gevoel in een paar piepjes en plopjes kunnen leggen. Voor mij een bovengemiddeld album met uiteraard de bekende nummers die natuurlijk klassiekers blijven. Als je langer naar het album luistert, raak je in een bepaald sfeertje van de '90s en wordt het album langzaamaan geweldig! ****

Interesting but was starting to get very repetitive!

If Joel Schumacher would have continued making campy Batman movies, one of Batman's villain's (probably Egg Head or King Tut) would play songs from this album to make all of Gotham City go insane. This is the perfect album to listen to when you desperately want to get a headache.

Daft Punk are one of the GOATs. This album is straight bangers.

My first foray into Daft Punk (and house music in general). I would have to say I’m disappointed. Extremely repetitive. I’m sure they are fun to dance to in a club, but sitting at home is not the right setting for this

Obviously a few classics on this album, but maybe a lack of quality control on 2 or 3 later tracks stop this from being a masterpiece.

A fantastic, seminal album fully deserving of its place on this album. They keep it simple, the make it effective. At a time when Big Beat ruled the dance scene this album really helped put straight up dance music back on the mainstream map again. Only the fact that a couple of dud tracks make this album feel too long prevent it from scoring a 5

Undoubtedly important, though they have more enjoyable albums imho.

Most of these songs feel like unresolved experiments as opposed to releasable material. How these songs garnered mainstream attention is baffling to me. Even the songs I recognize like "Da Funk" and "Around the World" get too repetitive and annoying as whole songs to me. I suppose they work well in a club or live setting though and it sounds like they did a lot of promotion beforehand.

My favorite electronic dance album of all time. Listened to alot of electronic music from this era but most of it was more IDM headphone music. This is extremely danceable while managing to keep it moving in such a way so as to keep it interesting throughout. Remember riding a bus across town to go buy this at a store in a strip mall as a lad. More memories of playing this at impromptu dance parties at college in the dorms. Holds up.

This is hard one to rate just listening back, since this is kind of made to be played in a club/dance party situation. It is pretty straight-forward house with some acid/techno at times. At 1997 this was a big deal though, it's just kind of self-aware dumb dance fun that I'd love at a club but listening at home is hit or miss. Some tracks are definitely better than others. Compared to today's EDM/IDM scene this is very barebones production/embellishments which I can admire. It's a 3 for home listening and as an "album", apparently they never intended this to be an album but rather a bunch of singles. Also this was likely intended to be multiple vinyls so it's not even designed to be listened all the way through I don't think, but rather mixed in and out of a DJ's set. Since this is "1001 Albums" I will have to give it a 3, but in different circumstances it'd be a 4.

Dei Daft Punk conosco a memoria e adoro Discovery e Human After All (che non sono in lista), mentre Homework l'ho sempre trovato troppo ballereccio (e noioso) rispetto a quelli citati prima, che diversamente sono state concepite in maniera più orecchiabile e matura. Da Funk e soprattutto Around the world sono un pezzo della mia adolescenza, ma, l'ascolto di quest'album, è stata un'esperienza noiosa, non terribile, ma di quelle che se ti squilla il telefono interrompi per rispondere.

Rock'n Roll: sembra un bambino con un pezzo di metallo in mano che sbatte su tutto quello che trova per dare fastidio ai genitori. Ci so riusciti so stati tra i 7 minuti e mezzo più lunghi della mia vita, non me immagino manco come mi sarebbe potuto piacere se fossi stato fatto di MDMA in un club. Mi dispiace ma non so proprio in grado di apprezzarli, purtroppo lo sospettavo e ho cercato di ascoltarli con apertura mentale ma per la maggior parte del tempo volevo solo che l'esperienza musicale finisse e in alcuni punti la cosa si estendeva alla mia vita in generale. Il fatto che Around The World sia orecchiabilie e mi faccia simpatia ripensando al video su MTV non è abbastanza. Penso che l'unico senso che potrebbe avere questo album è per raggiungere una trance sciamanica, ma a quel punto basta un tamburo bello grosso suonando colpi ripteuti a 120 BPM e la psilocibina ed è sicuramente meno irritante. Mi dispiace non li riesco a salvare in nessun modo, meglio i Prodigy a sto punto.

Questo disco non doveva stare in questa lista, i daft punk sono ancora alle origini qui e stanno solo gettando le basi per quello che è il sound che creeranno dopo. Se si voleva mettere un album di dance music si poteva mettere quello di uno dei musicisti che citano nella traccia teachers. Il disco è molto pensato per un certo contesto con pezzi che sono delle belle maranzate però un po’ mi dispiace punirli perché non è musica esclusivamente da ascolto. Per me il voto è 2.5 e comunque around the world è sempre fico.

Wie oft habe ich die seinerzeit durchgehört? 'Revolution 909‘ macht mir immer noch Gänsehaut. Dachte zunächst, die sei nicht so gut gealtert, aber Quatsch, volle 5.

It's ok, but electronic music just isn't my thing. So repetitive, after a while it just drills into your head and makes you feel a bit like you're going insane. Might be ok if I was at a rave on ecstasy I suppose - never tried it but maybe then I would get it. 2 stars.

This album was a lot of fun to listen to. It's undeniably catchy, feeling like the prelude to a great night out. I must say, the front half of the album is thrilling to listen to. "Da Funk" and "Around the World" are the clear stars of this show. Once you hit "Teachers" though, it starts to feel long. I feel like this starts out like an evening at the club, it starts strong and pulls you in, but then the music gets looser and more repetitive as you move through it. By the time you hit "Rock'n Roll," you have been dancing deep into the early morning hours. It plays differently just sitting at your desk and gets a bit tiresome. That said "Indo Silver Club" is possibly my favorite track. Fave songs: Da Funk, Indo Silver Club, Around the World

Didn’t like

I am a huge electronic fan but I have grown to realize I am not as big of a Dance fan. At least that is the genre that Apple puts this in. I have listened to Daft Punk in the past and never been a HUGE fan and I think that is highlighted on this album. The songs are very repetitive and often just repeat the same beat and lyrics over and over. I got bored very quickly with each song as the initial playing of it wore off.

Repetitive electronica beat that I don't like, with no lyrics. Boring.

This was fun to revisit. Around the World is the big hit but I've heard it so many times that it was the one song I skipped. It's a long record but great to jam on in the background while you work. Homework is an appropriate title in that way.

Not my genre, but did enjoy a couple of tracks - ‘Da Funk’ and, unsurprisingly, ‘Around the world’. At times felt more like a science experiment thank music, with a formulaic approach to building up each song and the use of strange sound and vocal effects.

Daftendirekt, Da Funk and Fresh are pretty great tracks. Teachers and Around the World are quite good. Burnin is big bad. Rollin & Scratching and Rock N Roll are some of the worst tracks I have heard in my life, absolutely ear-raping sirenes, horrible. Overall score: 6/10.

Well, this is certainly interesting and different. I had heard their name for quite some time, just never listened to any of their music as far as I can recall. I rarely encounter this style of music ("House"? I think?), and I don't expect I'll make a habit of it, but this album has some really catchy tracks. After a while, though, it felt like I was in a fast-moving video game with lots of lights and colors flashing. Also, I don't really like dancing, so I am a terrible judge of what makes good dance music, but I can see the appeal of this album for people who like to dance.

Нет, так просто не должно быть. Думал, врублю, ща балдёж будет, старая электронщина, типа той, что позже в Hotline Miami попадёт какой-нибудь. Но тут снова аморфный репетативный кал, состоящий из бита и семплов. Вот зачем это существует? Серьёзно, в клубах крутили? Я думал, даже для клубного хита нужна, не знаю... мелодия, например, а? Не? Их пару есть, да. Но их немного, и они заёбывают своей репетативностью. Могу представить разве что то, как подобное врубают чтобы задать темп физической активности. Но нам в началке врубали группу Space на физре, и то лучше было. Фрагмент «Rock'n Roll», «Oh Yeah», «Burnin'» - это просто преступление против эстетики какое-то, чуть ли не худшее, что я слышал... вообще в своей жизни. Тупа кал. Я хз, чё они там делали, альбом 4 года писался ведь по сути, ёбан в рот! В прочем, ладно, «Da Funk», «Around the World» - норм темы, в «Alive» добавить лейтмотив и вышел бы трек к Хотлайну. А ведь такие образы балдёжные, шлемы эти, думал, боги электронной музыки, на которых даже я выёбываться не смог бы. В общем, одно из самых больших разочарований в рамках 1001.

Every time I'm in a Daft Punk mood I listen to Human After all, so it's been a while since I heard Homework! Great album, I really like Around The World, although I don't fault those who find it too repetitive. Daft Punk's songs are tailor made to blend between each other in a set.

Ouvir este álbum é o equivalente ao que é uma pastilha elástica na gastronomia, sabe bem no início, não acrescenta em nada e fica sem sabor depressa. Devo dizer que o álbum tem um timbre muito particular o que é mérito dos dois jovens franceses. No entanto o facto de ser tudo tão repetitivo, simples e longo torna a experiência desgastante e desagradável. Data: 01/10/2025 Nota: 03/10

No me gusta en absoluto

Siouxsie And The Banshees deserve a lot of credit. They've come up with a truly original sound here. The standard chord progressions of rock 'n roll are nowhere to be found, replaced by an emphasis on minor seconds, tritones and overall dissonance. The rhythms are tribal and relentless, particularly Budgie's drums. McGeoch's guitars lines are serpentine or jagged, and often drenched in reverb--he develops new ideas and concepts for every song. The lyrics are disturbing and evocative. Siouxie's vocals are impassioned. The entire band gives a sustained and committed performance throughout the entire album. The energy never flags, so much so, that the overall effect is claustrophobic. And yet, despite all of the skill and passion involved, not one melody or lick or chord sequence or rhythmic sequence stuck to my brain. That's a mystery, but unfair as it might seem, I'm going to dock Juju a star for that. Even free jazz or avant-guarde classical music needs to provide a point of entry for the listener. Who knows, maybe with repeated listens, Juju would magically become more accessible to me, but at this point, I admire it more than like it.

I listened to this while I was searching for posts on Silver from the WallStreetsBets crowd. Methinks this album was more intended for listening to at clubs. btw, when the clubs reopen they will offer senior discounts?

They didn't make this record for me, although I can appreciate that they completely changed funk music.

Innovative and fun for no longer than 3 minutes of any song. Which is a shame, because they had no clue that the songs were all wayy too long. Like Jay Z says, Less is more. Anywhore, what can I really say in light of the fact that its a classic album with wide influence. Like yes it sucks, but it was necessary for 808 and heartbreak.

Good groove. Very repetitive if you're not in the trance/dance mood.

This "album" was a medley of singles that each half of the duo was working on before deciding they might as well paste them together with transitions (because that's all an album is any ways, right? A mass of sounds that doesn't share any themes or connecting threads pasted together with little vision?). Beyond the lack of any obvious theme in the music (which I suppose I could overlook) is the length. Holy fuck, why are all these songs so long? Is the point to make me want to stop listening before it's over? Is this performance art? "Around the World", "Rollin' & Scratchin'", "Rock'n Roll", and "Burnin'" account for just under 30 minutes. Despite this combined length, they do not even make up half of this album (sitting at 74 minutes). Who needed this? Who asked for this? I want answers because I want to know whose name I should be cursing as I doze off to sleep trying desperately to forget this album. There's some funny joke to be made about "Teachers", a song that pays tribute to their musical heroes while managing to be bad music. I certainly don't have the energy to make it after being bombarded by seventy. four. fucking. minutes. of these repetitive noises. Not all of it's bad, although even the good comes with bad. The first three minutes or so of "Revolution 909" is catchy and interesting (but it overstays its welcome). The first half of "Indo Silver Club" is a real ear worm (but it overstays its welcome). "Alive", although admittedly not as good as the previous two songs, is pretty good for the first little bit (but it overstays its welcome). I guess both Daft Punk and I were wrong, there seems to be at least one theme that combines much of this album, its desperate need for an editor or any form of quality control. The only songs I found good all the way through were "Daftendirekt", "Da Funk", and "Fresh". However, my favorite song is "WDPK 83.7 FM" just because it is the only song on the album whose length I won't have nightmares about.

I tried to be positive and enjoyed the first few tracks, but by half way through I could only call this OK background music for working. Just too repetitive & the song titles annoy me for some reason. This isn’t the day I start to appreciate electronic music

Not there best album but a solid debut

I’ve never liked listening to straight up dance music in an (unmixed) album format. And this one is 75 minutes long – so 40 minutes of filler. The 90’s technology – specifically the Chemical Brothers inspired noisy bits – hasn’t aged well, but the bass lines still rock and the disco-sampling French style that they popularized is still going strong 25 years later.

Just so long. I think if each song was like a minute or two and there were more different beats it would be interesting. I still like some of the songs though, so 6.

I thought this was pretty good and there aren't that many lyrics which makes it nice work music aside from that "Around the World" song which I think is what they used to brainwash operatives during the Cold War.

Around the World is good I guess. You basically only need to listen to the first minute of every song. By the end of this album I was mostly annoyed.

Hugely influential dance group, probably second only to Kraftwerk, but this isn't their best.

Some tracks were repetitive in a not-so-good way and were edited with a whole lot of distortion at times. Still, grooves like "Around the World" keep this album at 3 stars.

This was OK. I'm guessing this is on here because it mainstreamed electronic music or was very influential in some way. It was a little lost on me, though.

This was actually my first ever listen-to of a Daft Punk album (which is coincidental, due to being picked on the announcement of their breakup) but this friggin album came out when i was 10 years old! what can i say about it though, it got me moving throughout the entire album, and outside of the iconic songs ("Da Funk", "Around the World") there were some bangers on there like "Fresh" and "Indo Silver Club"

Side A was 90% house. Side B was more unique.
