Reviews (page 9 of 10)

Not my style but it's funky

This is another rating based purely on personal preference; EDM/techno just doesn't do it for me. This would be awesome as background music in a futuristic video game, and I respect the musicianship, but this is not something I would choose to listen to on its own.

If several songs were about 70% shorter I am sure I would have enjoyed this more.

Had some good beats but I found it a bit too repetitive. My favourites were Da Funk, Teachers, and of course Around the World.

Lots of cool sounds that creates an array of atmospheres. However too many songs go on for too long and feel lackluster in variety on any track. Some really strong highs but

There's some daft punk I like. And there's this. How can something be so simultaneously repetitive and stimulating? Puts me to sleep. Like, within minutes.

And I thought Ramones was repetitive

I'm not particularly interested in electronic music, this feels repetitive like other reviews say.

So boring

Ahead of its time in terms of the electro/slippery sounds that are prevalent on this album. However, I feel that a lot of the songs are repetitive noise competing to be exciting to the user's ears, while the constant repetition makes it difficult to not skip to the next song while 30 seconds in 2/5

Not his best but still good

I did not like this one bit, this sounds like when you stick electrodes in potatoes and fruits and then rub them and stab them with a fork to make noises

Too much electronic noise.

Bland on the whole

French 🥱

I liked the music for a short while, then it got really repetitive.

No doubt if I were in a club this would be banging. But I can count the number of times I've been "in a club" on one hand. And I'm 54. Lacks the imagination, wit and style of Kraftwerk. It's not entirely terrible, but really not my thing.

I liked one track, Da Funk. In general, the songs are super repetitive (Around the World) and sometimes super annoying (Rock’n Roll). Too long too. Won’t be revisiting. Afraid there may be Daft Punk more on this list.

I get why it's on the list, but it's not their best work.

Tot i que 'Around the World' i 'Da Funk' són dos temes indiscutiblement atraients

The first electronica album I ever got into. I used to enjoy the first half but would usually switch off toward the end. I then moved on to much better stuff. Listening back now 15 years later it's actually pretty disappointing given what else is out there. The songs have too little variation and go on far too long. Any catchy hook that appears is then rinsed over and over again. 2.5*

not my style didn't like, bu that's on me.

Not my style of music

As a big fan of electronic music I appreciate Daft Punks music as a foundation for a lot of the music that came after. I still think it‘s a bit boring mostly

One long edm track

16 tracks?!??? Over an hour long?!?? Fuckin’ nope.

What sounds great for one song on the radio or in a club can do your effing head in on an album. Too much repetition to be enjoyable

yeah, I didn't quite get this one. i'm not saying it was bad, just really not my cup of tea. the songs can be quite lengthy without much variance (but i guess that's the point). i just think you need some amount of club drug in your system to enjoy this one fully.

Well I didn't like this at all and Luke bigged it up. What a liar. I just found it a bit boring, repetitive and not in a good way. This kind of music just makes me think of post apocalyptic orgies. I think it's because of that scene in the Matrix in the second one where they go underground and everyones like dancing in the nude and it's well an orgy. The Neo and the woman have mad sex in a cave.. well this music was playing. Dunno why that's such a prominent memory for me.. maybe the first time I heard this kind of music.

Very dance-y! Like dance club style. Liked a couple songs but won't listen to it again in its entirety because a lot of the songs were too broken-record-y.

This is all a matter of context. If I was on a Mediterranean beach, or in a club or even out running, this would be a very different beast. I am doing none of those things. Listening to 75 minutes of this sitting in your bed or sitting at your desk is not optimal. It seems to go on and on and on. There are select songs that I do like on their own. ‘All around the world’ is great, but surrounded by repetitive and dull. Ask me again when I’m on the beach in Ayia Napa - ie never!

Please refer to Andy’s review of Fatboy Slim. It applies here. I have very fond memories of listening to the song ‘Around the World’. I had it on a lot of my mixed CDs. I really like the song ‘Daft Punk is playing at my House’ by LCD Soundsystem. Much better than I actually liked listening to a whole album of Daft Punk in my actual house.

Hmmm... turns out listening to repetitive sounds and keyboard pads and indistinguishable vocals and drum loops over and over and over and over and over and over is something that annoys me.

Time. Place. Well driving to the local health food store with this album playing didn't hit right. Neither did listening while cooking (my normal MO) or doing my puzzle. In the background while I do some mindless work---nope. Late night/early morning with a headful of XXX in my 30s---hell yeah! Maybe I am maturing after all. (NOTE: first time I heard this was early morning in Keith's Brooklyn kitchen, he had it playing on a loop, low, all day and all night. It was the kitchen soundtrack)

Probably not the best example of a Daft Punk album that should be included on this list. This was their debut major label album. They were mostly playing underground european raves/house shows at this time, and it is reflected in the sound of this album. Lots of repetitive instrumentals that seem to go on for a bit too long.

a couple good tracks but quite overrated

Je peux apprécier une piste en elle-même de temps à autre, mais je me rends compte qu'un album au complet me martèle le crâne et me rend impatiente!

I know Daft Punk has some cool songs in their arsenal but this album just wasn't it for me. I can't see a need to listen to this outside of wanting some mindless background beats or dancing and I don't feel it earned a place on this list - way too long and too repetitive.

I struggled through this album. Too redundant, not enough musicality and I was bored out of my mind. Ecstasy was needed. I can 100% understand lovers of this genre liking this album though.

Saved by around the world. Would probably love it if I was in a club off my face.

I think that, over the years, Daft Punk proved they're better than this. As for what "this" is, it's a leftover from the drug infused raves of the nineties.

Kind of obnoxious. I like their later stuff though, call me if that’s on the list

Unfortunately a bit too "house" for me, especially compared to their later work, definitely prefer the later albums. Apart from Around The World, obviously.

Extremely repetitive and full of grating noises. Probably deserves a 1

Electronica doesn't have to be repetitive

Da Funk, Fresh, Around the World No reason for this shit to be 74 minutes. I did not have to listen to this headache inducing nonsense. Almost a 1 star but better than Limp Shitkit and worse than Pavement. Random Access Memories should have been on this list. Not this dog shit.

around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world around the world Favorite: Rollin' & Scratchin'

It is criminal that the far superior DP albums Discovery and Random Access Memories are not on this list but this unpolished demo tape of an album is included. A repetitive, monotonous 75 minutes that should have been 30 max. The only songs I enjoyed were Daften, Da Funk, and Around the World.

Too repetitive and long to be an enjoyable listen

This is pretty bad. A whole album of horrible music with a mediocre hit somewhere in the middle.

Disappointed with this only one really good song

Every song was too repetitive and too long. (Over seven minutes for some of the tracks?!) I know that was the concept for French dance music, you don't want too much of a change, but I felt like there needed to be something else layered on top of each song at some point. There needed to be... more. To make it interesting. And it just wasn't there.

I like Daft Punk but this tested my limits. Among all the great work they've done, I have no idea why they chose this album. It is the definition of repetitive without any payoff. Almost feels like anxiety made music.

Stupid album.

Interesting

Demasiado largo, demasiado relleno

Relatively mellow edm

Daft Punk's "Homework" is a classic album that defined an era of electronic dance music. It features iconic hits like "Da Funk" and "Around the World," which still sound fresh and funky decades later. However, upon re-listening to the album, it becomes apparent that these standout tracks overshadow the rest of the album. While "Homework" was groundbreaking at the time of its release, it doesn't quite hold up to the test of time. The sound is dated and the tracks can feel repetitive or formulaic. That being said, there are still some hidden gems to be found. "Revolution 909" has a catchy beat and "High Fidelity" is a funky instrumental track that showcases the duo's musical skills. Comparing "Homework" to Daft Punk's more recent album "Random Access Memories," it's clear that the latter has a more polished and cohesive sound. "Random Access Memories" is a masterclass in production and features collaborations with a wide range of talented artists. It's an album that can be enjoyed from start to finish, while "Homework" has a few standout tracks that overshadow the rest. In conclusion, while "Homework" may not have the same staying power as some of Daft Punk's later albums, it's still a classic that paved the way for electronic music as we know it today. The standout tracks are still funky and fresh, and the album as a whole is a fun and nostalgic listen. It may not have the same listenability as "Random Access Memories," but it's still worth revisiting for its place in music history.

Around the World is so good that it saves it from getting just the one star. Surprised at how little of this I enjoyed.

Painful to be honest. Had had high hopes for this but it just went on and on and on and on and on... Clearly a singles band.

House music with less melody and no soul

Electrónica. Monótono y repetitivo

yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes - yikes

Couldnt do it. Only 2nd album I couldn’t finish. Too repetitive, too long. 7 minutes of Around the World? Come on. Maybe if I was in my late teens/early twenties. Roger Murtaugh here, I’m too old for this shit.

idk why this album was included and not discovery or random access memories.

Instant 5 Hmmm... Wait, nevermind this isn't Discovery. 4 Yea I remember why I never listen to this one. 2

I definitely prefer letter iteration of the band

It's amazing that Daft Punk got so big considering that this offering seems so rudimentary in parts, little more than repetitive bass and percussion. Maybe we were more easily pleased back in 1997? I certainly was, but then again, I was twelve.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. There's something about a lot of the tracks here that remind me of the music you'd hear when you're waiting for some dumb game to load on your phone. Does that make sense? Probably not. And, of course, Daft Punk probably influenced all of that stuff. For dance music, it felt like there was at least a sliver of fun to be had here. But man, I didn't come close to finishing the record let alone listen to disc 2 of the anniversary deluxe edition. I got to number 11 and there were still five songs to go. I like to think at least someone at the record label said, "D.P., we love you guys. We do. But let's go with ten tracks. It's a solid even number. That's like a good hour of dancing and people will be so high they won't know if the DJ just puts the record on repeat and plays all ten tracks again for hour number two. They'll love it. So, what do you say? Do we really need all 16 of these? Cause I gotta be honest, some of them - I can't tell the difference. It's just the boom boom boom boom. Which is great. It's great! Visionary even. But how about it... you can keep the helmets. But let's make it ten. Eh?" And Daft Punk just said, "Fuck you." in French. Rest is history.

I'm sure it's good. It's just not my kind of music

Daft Punk at their clubbiest. Kinda hard to rate, because it’s a good collection of tracks that work miracles when they’re properly mixed in a dj set, but as an album this lacks the flow and cohesiveness of some of Daft Punk’s later, more disco-oriented albums.

2 decent singles doesn't hide the other 1 hour's worth of repetitive and dull excrement that is commonly known as House music

A couple of songs were familiar. Did this album change house music and mixing? Most likely. Do I need to listen to 73 minutes of it? I do not.

I understand how giant of an influence daft punk has on music but at the same time I didn’t think this album needed to be over an hour long. Around the world is obviously the best track but I just can’t gel with the rest of it. Overall kinda disappointed

I like Daft Punk but this is not the album to choose.

Was really looking forward to listening to this album, but was quite underwhelmed.

I didn't like this album, the sounds are too repetitive and make me feel uncomfortable. i guess it's because of my ADHD and the need for novelty. However, I always liked this song ("Around the World") from this band, included on this album, and I discovered a new one that I enjoyed: Da Funk. So not all is lost.

I used to think “Around the World” was obnoxious. Nowadays I quite like it, it’s very tasteful compared to “Rock’n Roll”, a painful listening experience. This year marks 25 years of Homework, and to commemorate this anniversary I award 2.5 stars. HL: “Da Funk”, “Around the World”, “Alive” October 12, 2022

I thought this album would never end

very repetitive songs. some are just awful but early for their time. want to give it a 1 but giving it 2 bc it’s daft punk

It wasn’t as good as I thought it would be.

Not great tbh. Very repetitive, I don’t really see the point. Their hits in isolation are grand, but a full album? No thanks.

I’m afraid Daft Punk’s debut album doesn’t have the staying power of Random Access Memories. There were some parts where I just didn’t feel it, and I’m sad for that. That being said, there are some sparse strong points on this album that show where Daft Punk will go in the future. “Fresh” and of course the famous “Around the World” particularly stand out to me as hits from this album.

I can see how this would be influential and genre defining but it was too repetitive u

Too much punk for me. Not my style.

Listened Before? N This one is not really my style. I do like a couple of the songs but they get old pretty quickly. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Arond the World

Listened to on 8/21/22 2/5 Favorite song: around the world The theme of this album was chaos and lack of cohesion. While the beats would be perfect for a club - I’m pretty confident every song was just repeating the same noises which I did not enjoy

This is just dance music and it all sounds the same - nothing remotely memorable. Pointless if you don't dance. No melody, just a beat.Great if you're off your tits but otherwise useless - why is it on this list? Whoever curated this list needs a rethink; ehy should I listen to this?

All tunes sounds more or less the same. Never found out why DF could become so big. Ok, when they invite special guest vocalists to join them, but on their own… overrated

Pretty good, prefer their later albums though

Take it for what it is, a collection of club singles to be spun, mixed and danced to, not a coherent album to listen to with undivided attention. Not a bad piece of music, but maybe it's a bit misplaced on this list.

Boring, sparse. Not at all like the Laurent Garnier French techno I listened to in Parisian clubs in ‘96/‘97. Disappointing.

Electronic continues to be a genre which I don't understand and fail to see the appeal in. At times 7 minutes of the same 10-20 seconds beat looped endlessly

Daft Punks debut album. Not as good as some of their latter work. Some tracks come across as filler almost. Few great tracks with plenty of average ones.

I dig the first 10 seconds or so of every song but the next 4 minutes of that repeating, not so much

Not terrible, but definitely not for me.

Really not a fan of this, although I can see why people like it.

I had heard a few songs from Daft Punk prior to their 2013 release of Random Access Memories. I listened to that album as my full introduction to the band. Homework has a couple songs that I have heard before ("Da Funk", "Around the World"). "Around the World" is the track I like the best from this album. I did not enjoy most of the tracks on this album. I don't understand the repetition. In some cases, the repetition goes on long enough, and is of such short clips that it feels like a broken record ("High Fidelity"). Maybe there's something that I'm missing.

Wow, this is boring as fuck. I was expecting to give a ‘controversial’ 4 as all my friends seem to love Daft Punk but I’m not so sure. I had to skip a few outros to make it to the end. A couple of cool songs but as an album this was a real chore.

Around the world znałem i wciąż dobre, chyba najlepsze z albumu. 2.5/5

I do not like electronic music as a rule. This isn't as bad as most because how can you not like that 4 beat dance music rhythm. Great if you're actually dancing though. Otherwise, repetitive and it gets old quick especially because its so long. 2 or 3 to be decided after another listen.

Let's be real: Daft Punk is one of the most overrated groups of the last 20 years or so. I was never into the club scene, and MDMA has never been my drug of choice, so naturally none of this makes any sense to me. It just repeats ad nauseum for 75 minutes. Yeah, an hour and a quarter. If it was half as long it'd be alright tbh. Around the World is a catchy little tune... it just gets its point across in about 2min then goes for another 5. Da Funk isn't bad either - both those songs would be totally listenable if they'd just trimmed the fucking fat. I think there were radio edits (I remember hearing both those songs on the radio, and no way would a 7min song make it onto pop radio) but the album punishes us with full-length versions instead. The rest of the album is forgettable, just b-grade rehashes of the same idea. All that aside, I do have to grudgingly give this a 2/5 - it never actively made me spit chips. It just droned on mindlessly in the background.

More french electronica? No thanks. I can at least appreciate the impact Daft Punk have had internationally as artists, points for that. But this is not for me and I hate it.

Too long and not really my thing

“We have homework!?!?” Nobody likes homework. And getting through Daft Punk’s “Homework” definitely felt as grueling as a five-page essay or 50 calculus questions. Daft Punk deliver some cool sounds at times, but they’re driven into the ground on songs that go on for too long. At a rave or club, they get mixed quicker, but on a Daft Punk album they go on and on with mild teasing breaks just returning to the already overdone. “Around the World,” at over seven minutes, is the worst example. “Rolling and Scratching” is longer, but less repetitive, yet also has none of the same hook. And by the time you get to the annoying slide whistle-like sound on “Burnin’,” you’ve given up all hope and there are still 10 more problems, it’s 2 a.m., and your teacher is checking for completion in 6 hours.

I saw this and thought, 'Oh hell yeah!', oh how wrong you were, hour ago Dave. I remember liking Discovery a whole lot and parts of Random Access memories (Get Lucky fully excluded, god damn...) but maybe I'm going to have to revisit those if my feelings towards this is anything to go by. Even 'Around The World', which I got to thinking there was going to be a bright light here just felt... bland? Sorry Daft Punk, this is not the one.

I never liked Daft Punk. I saw this album pop up, saw it included Around the World and Da Funk and thought 'Hey, maybe my music taste has changed enough over the years to enjoy this' I was wrong.

4/16=25%

again, not really my style

Homework by Daft Punk (1997) This is a notably curious record—French electronic/techno ‘house music’, basically consisting of amateurishly robotic dance beats. It puts the “less” in “mindless”. A review of the lyrics is kind of fun, since most of the tracks are instrumentals, and the remaining ones treat words as either meaningless rhythmic repetitions or, in one case (“Teachers”), a mere litany of recording artists who influenced the duo. It would be interesting to hear the Litany of the Saints in this fashion (not really, although in some celebrations of the Church’s litanies, I’ve gotten a similar vibe. And who knows? Some of the saints might think it’s kinda cool!). Musically, it’s all about grooves, and some of them are quite good (e.g., “Around the World” - but it’s too damn long!). Sometimes (“Daftendirekt”) the meter is confusing—a good dancer might be embarrassed to discover a minute into a track that he/she is boogying to the wrong woogy. The dentist’s drill background track “Rock ‘n Roll” is definitely NOT rock ‘n roll. Occasionally (“Revolution 909”) the artists provide their own dance club sonic ambience, with sorry effect. This music needs some vocal overlay (like from, oh, I don’t know, Pharrell Williams?). But that would require melody; and on this album, that’s in short supply. The biggest weakness is the lack of (or slow pace of) development and variation in these admittedly creative tracks (a minor 20-second exception starting at 6:05 on “Rollin’ and Scratchin’”). Hypnotic cohesion is basically all you get from Daft Punk. It is daft. And the listener has been suitably punked. Keep the first half of “Around the World” and throw away the rest of this album. I’ve done my duty. If you play this record on a long drive, you run the risk of killing someone. 2/5

not my cup of tea

Not a Techno/Dance music fan really, can see some merit in this but not one I would have in my collection. "Around The World" and "Da Funk" obviously a favourites but the rest is much of a muchness for me, sorry to say.

Good background music, repetitive though.

Do I know how important this album was at the time? Yes. A couple of the tracks absolutely banged. Has the album aged well? Oh hell no. It's like being nostalgic for a Nokia 3410, great memories, but you don't want to own one now.

I understand that this isn’t designed to be listened to while sitting on my sofa struggling with the crossword, but… It’s got the distinctive sound of Daft Punk, but hardly any of the catchy tunes they’d come up with later.

Nope thanks

I tried but it is way too repetitive for me. I tried but it is way too repetitive for me. I tried but it is way too repetitive for me. *Beat drop* I tried but it is way too repetitive for me. 1RS

Chemical Brothers. Varmasti aikanaan ihan hienoa ja kokeellista elektrolooppausta, jonka tahtiin voisi mielellään heilutella raajoja yökerhossa kolmen promillen humalassa. Albumia kuunnellessa en vaan valitettavasti pääse oikeaan mielentilaan jotta tästä suuremmin nauttisi. Hittibiisit Da Funk ja Around the World erottuvat vähän muuten niin harmaasta jumputusmassasta.

Really thought this would be more interesting than it is. Lots of big beat sameness, less funkyness than i was hoping for. Everything is too long too.

I thought I'd like it, since it's Daft Punk. Except for "Around the World" however, I didn't take too much pleasure from this album.

Not as fun as the Daft Punk I'm used to. Doesn't sound as clean and precise as I expect from these lads. Won't come back to it.

Lelijk oud geworden

Most of these songs feel like unresolved experiments as opposed to releasable material. How these songs garnered mainstream attention is baffling to me. Even the songs I recognize like "Da Funk" and "Around the World" get too repetitive and annoying as whole songs to me. I suppose they work well in a club or live setting though and it sounds like they did a lot of promotion beforehand.

It's ok, but electronic music just isn't my thing. So repetitive, after a while it just drills into your head and makes you feel a bit like you're going insane. Might be ok if I was at a rave on ecstasy I suppose - never tried it but maybe then I would get it. 2 stars.

I am a huge electronic fan but I have grown to realize I am not as big of a Dance fan. At least that is the genre that Apple puts this in. I have listened to Daft Punk in the past and never been a HUGE fan and I think that is highlighted on this album. The songs are very repetitive and often just repeat the same beat and lyrics over and over. I got bored very quickly with each song as the initial playing of it wore off.

This is absolutely minging.

I know this is decent.

Not my genre, but did enjoy a couple of tracks - ‘Da Funk’ and, unsurprisingly, ‘Around the world’. At times felt more like a science experiment thank music, with a formulaic approach to building up each song and the use of strange sound and vocal effects.

Not really a fan of electronic music.

not that interesting

Meh. Like hot food that's hot for the sake of being hot, not the flavor, this album is a lot of sound looking for a more groovy plan.

В прочем, ладно, «Da Funk», «Around the World» - норм темы, в «Alive» добавить лейтмотив и вышел бы трек к Хотлайну.

Data: 01/10/2025 Nota: 03/10

not for me!

A couple of fab songs but the rest are a bit too house for me

I listened to this while I was searching for posts on Silver from the WallStreetsBets crowd. Methinks this album was more intended for listening to at clubs. btw, when the clubs reopen they will offer senior discounts?

They didn't make this record for me, although I can appreciate that they completely changed funk music.

I tried to be positive and enjoyed the first few tracks, but by half way through I could only call this OK background music for working. Just too repetitive & the song titles annoy me for some reason. This isn’t the day I start to appreciate electronic music

Around the World is good I guess. You basically only need to listen to the first minute of every song. By the end of this album I was mostly annoyed.

Hugely influential dance group, probably second only to Kraftwerk, but this isn't their best.

Meh, a few good songs but didn't really enjoy it.

it has its moments, but it's not for me.

Side A was 90% house. Side B was more unique.

I feel like an old person saying this album gave me a headache but I was 14 when it came out. It seems so repetitive, with its only saving grace being familiarity.

Niet echt van kunnen genieten behalve "around the world", vooral het nummer rock&roll was niet echt prettig luisterbaar

Interesting, but not a big fan

too repetitive, but a few interesting songs on here. specifically around the world, da funk, and burnin

Around The World is the only song I enjoy on this to be honest

This is what the thoughtless dipshits listen to in the parking lot between the hours of 10PM to 10AM that makes you fantasize about smashing their windshield with a baseball bat. I hate Daft Punk, I've always hated Daft Punk, I will always hate Daft Punk.

the few tracks I could bear to listen to were utter crap

I hear French and 1997 and think of Princess Diana and that tunnel. This is about as enjoyable as that. There must have been some wicked pills around this time to tolerate and even enjoy this. These songs must have taken all of five seconds to make. It's bollocks.

Drugs have to be involved to enjoy something this repetitive.

The production and consummation of music videos was probably at its peak around 1997. Certainly the budgets for making them was at a high and the filmmakers behind successful music videos - Spike Jonze say - would achieve name recognition. There are great music videos that synthesis the musical strengths of the song with the visual strengths of the filmmakers imagination. There are serviceable videos that pull along supercuts of performance footages by the sheer propulsion of the music - something like Cherub Rock comes to mind for some reason. And, then, there are all the absolute cheats, the baits and switches, which replace the song altogether with the experience of watching the video. In 1997, I loved Spike Jonze's video for Da Funk - the Big City Night, where an anthropomorphised dog with a broken leg hobbles around his new NY neighbourhood with a busted ghetto blaster and bumps into an neighbour from his childhood; the neighbour invites the lonely dog downtown for food, but, when the dog, Charles, reads the sign on the bus prohibiting ghetto blasters, he freezes, the bus departs, and he is alone again. Charming. A little surreal. Just moving enough. And an absolute swizz. I loved the video and probably thought I loved the song too. But there is no song. Listening to Da Funk on its own, this becomes abundantly clear that the video has pulled a number on us. The handful of hooks in the song are plucked out and handled as in a movie trailer, rearing up into the foreground only at the right dramatic moment. Whereas, on the recording, they stack together in a tedious, repetitious loop. Any sense of drama or narrative associated with the song was in the video. The filmmaker imposed a narrative on the song, rather than visualising the narrative movement of the song. The song itself goes nowhere. I was always a little troubled by Charles the dog's ghetto blaster. If it's broken - if he cannot turn it off or at least turn it down, as he insists to the bookstall owner - why leave the house with it? Why is he so rude all the time? Why must he have his every action soundtracked, as though he were in a film? I guess it compensates for some feeling of loneliness, some inadequacy. He is desperate for friendship and maybe more from Beatrice, who he encounters in the bodega. He is enthralled to the fantasy of the novel Big City Nights. Yet, when the chance comes to take the next step with Beatrice, he bottles it. He can't leave the comfort of the ghetto blaster. Because, in so doing, he'd be taking the step out of fantasy into the harsher, less predictable world of adult autonomy. He would no longer be the main character accompanied by the hero's leitmotif. The song claims no stakes in being an artistic expression by Daft Punk. It simply wants to underscore your dancing. Like video game music, it must be allowed to loop indefinitely so the character can run around the sandbox world. Jonze's video tries to imply that these couple of loops can be deeper, more foundational to an existence than they can ever be - for Da Funk, or any of Homework, to really get into your bones, who have to be doing something else entirely. It has to gain its significance through association. You can't just be sitting in a room, as I was today. You have to, at least, watch the videos. And I was surprised how many music videos there were for tracks on the album. Around the World is most honest, with its circular choreography going round and round like the lyrics. Although, even here, Michel Gondry recognises that the choreography must build, renew, and surprise to keep our attention, in a way that the song never bothers with. Charles and Beatrice return in the music video for Fresh, directed by the band themselves several years after the original success of Da Funk. Charles is now an actor in LA. He and Beatrice are together. They like it there. It is a terrible. A terrible video, with no real story, no real depth. The characters barely feel connected to the original characters in Da Funk. There is no dramatic tension. It is a fantasy more banal and cheap than the one Jonze presented - and perhaps warned us about - in Da Funk. The song is used with none of storytelling competence of Jonze, it never underpins an emotion nor injects a sting of dramatic significance. It just plays along amiably in the background, hoping that you will never notice that it is doing nothing, saying nothing. Nobody is even dancing to it. Spike Jonze and his video may have been cheats, but art is a sort of cheat - it should be a shortcut to feelings and ideas that you may never have reached on your own. That Daft Punk requires the listener to give so much for their repetitive loops to offer up anything, suggests they were not the artists in the relationship at all. 1 Generally when EDM is served up it is served up like a cheap fry. A greasy plateful of cheap, dry sausages and bacon piled up with lukewarm beans and carbon-flecked fried eggs atop. Each mouthful barely discernible from the last. Sad, stodgy, and indigestible. Daft Punk at least arrange the components to make a happy face on the plate. They do ‘funny’ vocal samples, twist their low pass filter good and slow, and even throw in an extra bar here and there before a transition, to keep you guessing. At least that’s how I felt when I was half a dozen tracks into Homework. By the time I made it through the second half of the album any goodwill had evaporated. There is a stench of puerility in the air through the second half. High Fidelity’s self-indulgence is immediately followed by the 7 and a half minute punishment of Rock ‘n Roll. Whatever that represents to someone off their face on the dancefloor in the wee hours, it is an absolute waste of any sober listener’s time, and it may be worse than that. If Daft Punk made a happy face, they also spat in the food. 1/5

It was quite enjoyable, but i appreciate well written lyrics so this album was somewhat boring. Im not one to listen to music ONLY for its beats

I was really looking forward to this when I saw it, and I was really disappointed in this halfway through it. And completely worn out by it when done. Just so monotonous.

The Good: Mr Dimery was nice enough to only include 1 of their albums to the list! The Bad: That it wasn’t zero… The Ugly: Finding out that “the community” has added 3 more fucking DaftPunk albums… fuck them. Anyone can stand 1 2-minute songs of this kind… but to have to sit and listen to this repetitive nonsense for well over an hour is enough to make one want to start punching holes into the wall… DNF, like many other people 1*

A bit boring, it just repeats.

This is just woeful. Repetitive, and sounds like the start of a panic attack. It’s a no from me.

Before I started listening to this, I would have told you I liked Around The World by Daft Punk. Fucking hell. 1/5

This is a dnf by choice. Probably not bad for this genre but wow this is not my genre. No thanks. No favs.

Sorry :( like logical progression, I just found this boring. Unlike that other album, I also found it annoying. I kept trying to listen to it throughout the day and just didn’t ever enjoy myself.

This is like the worst form of white people dance music ever. Just the same stupid beat through the entire album. Oh God, Burnin' is terrible.

Not for me

Varför slutade de inte efter Around the World?? Obegripligt oljudigt efteråt.

Brutal pounding. Pretty much unbearable.

Boring, irritating, and it worried my dog.

It's called Homework. So I'm marking it as a D Minus. Must do better

Didn’t make it through. I like electro and electronica music, and though they are pioneers in the field, especially laying in more DJ-type effects, this doesn’t improve upon the electro sounds of the 80s. The songs are made up of sound effects and so much longer than they need to be without any progression. No thank you.

Not for me. Didn’t listen to it all

House music is really not my thing. The beats are good but everything is so repetitive, I could only make it halfway through.

The day I listened to this album, I had work done in my bathroom. There was a fan going, and the vent for it ran through the hallway, into the room I work out of, to the window. The window was open for 2 hours and it was 25F out. The fan was going almost the whole time. It was loud. I think that's what made the passing of time with this album bearable, though. Because I knew that the album would end before the work. There HAD to be an end. But, oh, did this feel like an eternity.

This is an hour and 14 minutes of the same lifeless and monotonous dance beat. I can best describe this as unlistenable garbage.

Another electronic music album I am not finishing. I managed to get halfway through it and got the ideia If I wanted to listen to this shit Id take my earphones off on my old gym (and electronic music is the reason I left that one and chose another instead)

Don’t care for this.

I did not like most of these songs, the few I did like were still quite repetitive. There were a couple of songs that were quite grating which I really didn't like. Not great

Had to skim this one. Couldn’t take the full dose of repetitive loops. Maybe this is considered good for the genre, but I don’t get it.

Maybe I just don't understand it, but this was homework to get through. Why is it so repetitive??? It sounds like an 11 year old kid just played around in garage band.

i don't think ive ever listened to a daft punk song before so this should be interesting -lowkey giving poggers but maybe cool? -kind of making me anxious -around da worrrrrl around da worllll okay this is low-key driving me fucking crazy WHY is this song 7 mins -i hate this teachers is my least favorite song ever bad 1/5

1.5 - not for me

I'd rather be one of the 22 victims at Ariana Grande's concert bombing than listen to this again

I prefer music

👎🏻

An absolute drag to get through. The songs range from coma-inducing repetition to nail-on-a-chalkboard abrasive sounds. Not a fan at all. Standout Trank: None.

Daft JUNK.

Never listened to much Daft Punk before (really only songs by other artists where they feature on the background track). Glad that was the case. This was pretty bleh from the start. The first track pretty much kept saying "choose your deal masala the fun pack" again and again. Phoenix had this irritating buzz thing going on. Rollin, High Fidelity, and Oh Yeah were just plain annoying. And then there's Around The World. I've heard of the song before, the whole joke about how Daft Punk got everyone to listen to them say "around the world" over and over for 7 minutes. Figured there had to be something in it to make it interesting. Nope, it was the dumbest song. And why are all the tracks so damn long? You could cut each one into a 30 second sample, and you would lose barely anything. Only decent tracks were Teachers and Da Funk. These guys really are daft. Best song: Da Funk

too much beep boop screech...sorry this gave me a headache

The thumping beat, the weird arrangements and the repetitive lyrics. Not for me.

Wow. Terrible. I had to stop several tracks because they were torture. Overall not for me at all.

Boring repetitive and lacks musicality.

Sooorry… electronica stresses me out

I do not care for this, my apologies. I am not qualified to judge this music, this could be good, this could be garbage, but as it does not enjoy me, I can only see it as boring.

It’s crazy how much worse this is than their next album. Borderline unlistenable at times.

See kids, in my day there was no such thing as A.I. so the closest thing we could get to bad music made by robots was these two French gimps called Daft Punk

Favorite tracks: Teachers This was mind-numbingly repetitive. I kept wishing there were lyrics only to see the error of my ways when Around the World came on. I will never understand the appeal of house music.

The thing that I liked most about this album was that after 73 interminable minutes, it ended and I'll never have to listen to it again.

Langweilig

Who the hell listens to music like this. Dance I can get (not my thing) but listens to?

Some bangers from my youth, but some of the songs were really hard to listen to- like Rollin' and Scratchin' and Rock'n Roll. Some of the sounds in are really grating! I powered through, but dang!! Not a bad album to listen to while doing my homework - over all, good energy.

Not for me

I don’t like giving 1s, but this bad.

66/1001 Daft Punk - Homework Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ Like homework, this is a chore to get through - long, boring and tedious.

Music you hear while at a urinal in the men's room of a chic Montreal hotel.

This felt like menu music for a video game from the nineties about building houses and then knocking them down and

Truly awful

The difference between this and discovery is staggering. This is so bland, boning, one note, nonsense. Da funk is a great song

Way too repetitive… Da Funk is the closest to something that I like on here. Why did the record have to be more than one hour long??

Off the cuff remark: If Daft Punk were playing at my house I'd tell them to jog on and write a tune. LCD sound system would be much more welcome. Maybe I need more sweat, or drugs or not to be so old, or maybe all 3. This is just tedious. Standout track: Da Funk and Fresh. I listened to these all the way through Revisit?: I listened to most of the tracks on the first half, thought I would just skip through it all then thought I'll try again tomorrow, who knows it might make a difference...and it didn't really Revisit?: I hope not

Boring.

Monotonic beats and loop repetition song after song. Had to skip most of the songs after few minutes. Maybe this might work on the dancefloor of some smoky club while toxicated enough. Otherwise it's just boring.

No soul at all and repetitive as hell. If I was born in the 90's or 00's perhaps it would hit me different. But I have zero use for computerized loops.

Garbage. Not my thing AT ALL.

They have such a large reputation, and yet this album sucked. So boring to listen to; almost all of it is repetitive filler. Hope their subsequent album is better

Not My Cup of Tea, pretty bland music.

Ugh. Can we do a metal album? I’m tired of sounding like a 14 year old atheist, but I just don’t know how much more pop I can do. And before the screeches of “this isn’t pop!1!1!” pierce my eardrums from miles and eons away, I realize that “pop” can sound diverse. I even like some of it, but of the radio songs I’ve heard from this group, I am dreading the next 73 minutes. Can I say my dog ate my homework? Daftendirekt - Whoa. Pretty funky. My biggest problem with this band is the repetition, and I can see that it’s going to be an issue right away. How’s this going to be over an hour? The beat itself here is engaging though. I’ll give them that. WDPK 83.7 FM - This isn’t a song. I got tricked. Revolution 909 - Is this something you’d listen to at home? This is what is playing behind a low budget fashion show or possibly, an even lower budget pornographic picture. I’m really glad I put my headphones on and sat down to listen to this. (I’m not) Da Funk - There’s a guy dressed up like a dog on the Spotify looping video thing. He appears to be waiting for a bus. That’s the best thing about this album so far. Phoenix - Remember Enzo Amore? He got accused of sexual assault and got fired from WWE, and then made one of the worst rap songs ever called “Phoenix.” It may have been stylized like PHOEN1X or some shit, but the point stands. From a purely comedic standpoint, I would have more fun there than I’m having here. Fresh - This isn’t even catchy? It sounds like a skipping record. Who is this for? Why is this happening? Where am I? Who are you? Around the World - Fuck You. Reminds me of a Zamboni driving around in an empty university hockey rink. Maybe because that’s when I’ve heard this song the most. Is this even danceable? Electronica for shut-ins. Rollin’ & Scratchin’ - errrm this describes me @ my eyes. Get it?? I’m disinterested AND tired. This is probably the best song to be fair. At least there is some grit. Take “best song” very lightly. It wore out its welcome in three minutes, but went 7! Teachers - Will this be a meaningful ballad about how our educators are underpaid and under appreciated? Oh. No, it’s another keyboard preset. I should’ve guessed that. You got me again, robots. High Fidelity - Holy HELL this sucks. Cut 3-5 minutes off of every song. Rock’n Roll - A new styling of rock and/or roll. Ooh. Terrible clapping sound effects. You spoil me. This one is actually so annoying I want to scream. I can’t skip anything, and I feel like I’m in a straitjacket. Why is it 7 minutes? Ce chanson est tres, tres mal. One of the worst things I’ve ever heard. Oh Yeah - Oh No. Burnin’ - AHHHHH. What are we listening to? A slide whistle sample over a generic beat. They’re making fun of you. Can you not see that? What if we produce the dumbest, easiest music ever made? I mean hey, beats working. Now they’re multi millionaires. Capitalism provides us so much value. Indo Silver Club - Maybe I can formulate a silver bullet and perch atop the grassy knoll. We’ll never have to hear Around the World again. Can you imagine such an enlightened future? Alive - Oh good they’re back from the dead! The silver bullet wasn’t enough. They truly are immortal. Funk Ad - The merciful end. The silence is ringing in my ears. NO DONT AUTOPLAY. As I was saying, the silence is beautiful. Nothing is repeating now. I can’t get over how uninteresting this was. It’s a barebones drum machine. There is very little variety in sound. It’s what plays before the concert. It’s air. They have fleeced an entire generation of music listeners. Those are my sentence fragments that break out for when I’m really annoyed. This album sounds like kids who have just discovered a free beat maker, goofing off in high school. Add the confidence to actually release those horrible sounds, and add vast critical acclaim (for some reason) and you have Homework. An album as depressing and infantile as its namesake. Maybe some cosmic dog can eat it out of existence. In the absence of cosmic dog(s), I will attempt to scrub this from my mind with good music over the ensuing hours. 0.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Well you see, there was that one song that went UNCE UNCE UNCE UNCE, but then there was that OTHER song that went UNCE *clap* UNCE *clap.* hmm so many options. Oh darn, we’re out of time!

There has never been nor ever will be a time when I need to listen to this album all the way through. 1 star or F.

Way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way too repetitive. And soooooooooo lonnnnnngggggg. And repetitive.

Boring. Why would anyone choose to listen to this bland excuse for electronic music?

I actually expected better. I honestly only like Around the World

Well, it's 90s dance music. And for that purpose it fits very well. But for all purposes in life this is simply boring. Boring. And again: Boring. And by the way, in the 90s nobody heard the music. They were all in some other sphere dancing and only felt the beat. So probably nobody had heard this album before it was put on this list.

Kuuntelukelvoton

This was a 2/5 album until “Rock and Roll” came on. Now it’s a 1.

Just a very bad album one track an album does not make.

Here's a little math for ya Around the World × 33678 ÷ 800 parts of the same bullshit × Around The World a few more times + 8 ecstasy pills + 85 neon braceletes over ya body + at least 3 white lines in a row × Around The World a few more times = AROUND THE WORLD AROUND THE WOOOORLD!

Too repetitive.

Repetitive nonsense. Impossible to listen to in the home environment.

Did not enjoy.

Bizarre in an endearing way. Repetitive in an annoying way. A couple cool beats, but won’t need to listen to this twice.

Not my cup of tea

No me parece armónica, no me produce ningún sentimiento

1 star for the obvious tracks that are fun one time around. It’s like a computer had a breakdown.

Ten thousand years of nothing, then 'Around the World', and then another ten thousand years of nothing. Pass.

I know this is Daft Punk and they are basically them when it comes this music, but I was bored. I didn’t enjoy and I just wanted it to end. I don’t think I listened to any of the songs through all the way. Overall, I was just bored by this album.

i truly did not enjoy any of this xD i made sure to listen to every single track just to be sure and the only few seconds i enjoyed was when i could hear a synth similar to the one in baba o’reilly by the who. i’ve heard other daft punk stuff which has been a lot more enjoyable. congrats daft punk’s debut album for becoming my first 1 star rating.

Around the world is a good song as a stand-alone song, when you listen to it as part of the album its repetitive and boring as all songs on the album follow the same pattern. I know people adore Daft Punk, I have never understood why. This album in summary is dull, all the songs are the same with repetitive lyrics and very little change in gear. It’s just very boring. I have no idea how this made the list. Favourite song: Around the world Least favourite: Everything is just very meh and boring. Album artwork: Cool cover

This annoys me more than i want to admit, especially as i quite like other records by Daft Punk.

Very long and annoying (like an edm earworm) , also not my type of music "Around the World" is good, but only needs to be 3 minutes at most!!

Not for me, I just don't get the whole electronic thing

Not my thing.

Aaaaargh

Really didn’t need something repetitive and this lengthy on an already tense Election Day. Daft Punk have some hits, and Around The World is one of them, but I really didn’t enjoy this album.

Not necessarily my cup of tea. I get the idea they're going for but to me this stuff can just be boring and kind of a waste of time. I find the repetition kind of annoying at times. Each song is at least 3 times as long as it needs to be given how much actual content they contain. My Top 3: Around the World Da Funk Teachers

I'm not really a dance/house music person

Torturously repetitive

Once I got to the back half I started skipping parts of songs. I don't know much of their work, but from what I do know this doesn't seem like their best. It feels like if you hear the first 30-45 seconds of a song you've heard the song. I was talking about this website with one of my coworkers and he told me it needed more electronic stuff, and when I told him this was my album of the day he told me I would be way too sober to enjoy it at work.

I don't think this was meant to be listened to as an album. If it was, this is one of the least interesting records ever.

Wow this was horrible. I thought at first it might be something new to try and I should have an open mind but that shit down real quick after I heard the exact same phrase 30055927 times in one song, every song, for over an hour. No song should be that repetitive to a point where I can tell the title before it his the 30 second mark every single time. I could do snippets of each song for half a minute but this version is hell.

This is the best French music ever made

Computers have been replacing humans for a long time.

First listen Saved 0/16

Never been a big fan of Daft Punk, particularly their earlier work. I prefer more complex drum rhythms and less repetitive, experimental noise. This listen certainly didn't change my mind.

There's some good things on this album. Unfortunately they all massively overstay their welcome to the point that I end up hating them. I would rather castrate myself with a rusty spoon than listen to this headache inducing mess again.

Who knew Around the World was 7 fucking minutes long? I know Daft Punk have a real buzz about them and I’m sure it’s cause they’re good at what they do if you’re into that sort of thing. I kinda hate music that just repeats on a loop, so not off to the best start with these guys. Was considering a 2 but I think I need to deduct a point for having too many long songs that is just the same goddamn beat for 7+ minutes

Not really into house/dance music. It is so repetitive. I get their influence on the genre. Just not for me.

I do not love electronic music, so we will see if this album changes my mind a bit. First song is repetitive (which is one of my issues with electronic music). I do like the seamless transitions. On song 4 of a 31 song album and I already want to peel my skin off at the one-dimensional, repetitive beats. I do like the ocean sounds in Fresh a lot. That was different and nice. Around the World is a good song, possibly due to nostalgia for me. Rollin and Scratchin is the worse song on this album yet. It is actively offensive. Teachers was a nice song after all that lol. High Fidelity is more of the same repetitive nonsense, both musically and lyrically. Rock n Roll is also a shockingly bad song. Burnin sounds like lasers and not in a good way. Glad it is over. It's a 1 from me Dawg.

Requires a lot of xtc to understand and fully enjoy.

My ears are hurting

The wrong Daft Punk album.

Unz unz boooooooo

feels like talking to some pretentious man you've met at a bar

Electronica is probably my most challenging genre. This was a proper slog. The only bright side, it was kinda cool seeing some buds for future blooms. I enjoy a lot of DP's later work.

Why was this drivel so successful? Actual brain torture. I like electronic music, Orbital, Underworld, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Jarre, and on and on. This is just infuriating repetitive toss. The repeated sections are so short and always have an irritating sound in them and are repeated endlessly with no variation. I genuinely hate this and I say that rarely about anything.

nightclub background music that no one cares about.

I don't mean to be a grouch...and maybe it was the mood I was in...but I just wanted this to stop. Annoying noises on repeat :(

Nope. Gar nicht

i don't understand why this album was so long!!!! it was SO repetitive--and the repetition was constant! i understand why daft punk should be on a list like this because they were so revolutionary but for the love of god, why is the album so long? one positive thought i had was that this album sounds a bit like prince if he did electronic. but you know, it wouldn't have been so annoying.

Ever since I can remember, I've always hated Daft Punk, outside of the tracks Da Funk and Technologic. Around The World, One More Time and Get Lucky are so basic and boring and I've never understood the appeal. I've tried numerous times to get into their music and the best I can muster up is a "meh." So, since this album has Da Funk on it, I was looking forward to it hoping I would like the other songs. After listening to the full album, I don't even know if I like Da Funk anymore. I started the album thinking, "this is ok, I'm sure it picks up and gets more interesting further in, maybe changes it up a bit." Nope. It's basically the same beat for the entire hour and 14 minutes. HOW IS IT SO LONG?! My boredom became hate and loathing during Rock N' Roll and stayed there for the rest of the album. I don't care that I'm going to catch hate for this but this album is not good and I'm tired of people pretending that Daft Punk makes good music. If this bothers or offends you, then you're probably basic and boring, because Daft Punk makes basic and boring music for basic and boring people. But that's ok! It's ok to listen to if you like hearing the same beat for 7 minutes and enjoy counting to 8 over and over again. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just not for me. I'm sure all of their other albums are on this list and I am not looking forward to being bored by those albums either.

Repetitive, monotonous sounds. Did not like

Proof that you don't have to play real instruments or write lyrics to get famous. This is not for me. I've never been a fan of house music and the repetition on this is mind numbing. Such a relief when it ended.

I’d like my hour and change back please. I was not going to rate any album less than a 2, but for this I’ll make an exception. This album did make me want to dance…out of da club and into traffic.

Nope, there is nothing about this album that I like. Most tracks sounded as if someone put a 1980s dot matrix printer (you know the kind, with the paper that was all attached and you had to pull off the perforated hole sides) in a rave club and proceeded to print out War and Peace at different speeds. Nope! Fuck waterboarding a person...you want to torture someone? Make them listen to this entire album

Only good song is Around the World

No! This music literally gave me vertigo and made me nauseated. It was probably groundbreaking in 1997, but now I just lump it in with all the EDM music thumping from the site of the Electric Daisy Carnival which is too close to my home!

I hated it

Headache Inducing.

Gefällt mir nicht.

Soundtrack to the men's room in Hell.....Really? This is a must hear album?....Why?

Hard to listen too.......

Horrible

I hate music that repeat itself

I like daft punk but this album sucks
