There are germs of ideas here, it’s not as compelling as I remember though.

Again I only knew the 2 famous tracks, but I do vividly remember seeing the Around The World video for the first time and thinking it was brilliant. Album is a little too ambient for my tastes but still solid.

I'm a bit suprised I'm fine with such strong rhythm. Probably heard Revolution 909 in some fashion show or some other scenarios. Prefer this type of music over those experimental indies even if this one does not have much lyrics either (rolls eyes). But still, requires me a lot of patience to reach Around the World track... ah, the quirky modern music world.

Perfect background music for doing homework.

It’s an ok album. Pretty par for what ABBA provides. They have their own style and nail it. It’s hard to feel like their music is dated due to no one really replicating it.

I really like a good amount of Daft Punk's music but I've never been able to get into this album. It's super repetitive and some of the beats get annoying but there's something about it that doesn't make me hate it. It's still really well produced and the music isn't bad it's just not meant for focused listening. Fav songs: Da Funk, Alive

Random Access Memories is my only frame of reference. This sounds similar but less fully realized. Makes sense since I think this is their first record. What I like about RAM is that it feels like pop songs. Less drawn-out electronica than what is happening here. Still, though, it's good "up the pace while you're working" music - which is what happened when I listened to it. Isaac's sitter must wonder what's happening in here, with me listening the George Michael and Daft Punk back-to-back.

I don't really listen to this type of music often, but there's something about Daft Punk that I like. Because I don't listen to the genre, I can't really critique or assess it. I don't know what Daft Punk does differently or better or whatever - but it's good.

Interesting but was starting to get very repetitive!

My first foray into Daft Punk (and house music in general). I would have to say I’m disappointed. Extremely repetitive. I’m sure they are fun to dance to in a club, but sitting at home is not the right setting for this

Se si voleva mettere un album di dance music si poteva mettere quello di uno dei musicisti che citano nella traccia teachers. Il disco è molto pensato per un certo contesto con pezzi che sono delle belle maranzate però un po’ mi dispiace punirli perché non è musica esclusivamente da ascolto. Per me il voto è 2.5 e comunque around the world è sempre fico.

This album was a lot of fun to listen to. It's undeniably catchy, feeling like the prelude to a great night out. I must say, the front half of the album is thrilling to listen to. "Da Funk" and "Around the World" are the clear stars of this show. Once you hit "Teachers" though, it starts to feel long. I feel like this starts out like an evening at the club, it starts strong and pulls you in, but then the music gets looser and more repetitive as you move through it. By the time you hit "Rock'n Roll," you have been dancing deep into the early morning hours. It plays differently just sitting at your desk and gets a bit tiresome. That said "Indo Silver Club" is possibly my favorite track. Fave songs: Da Funk, Indo Silver Club, Around the World

Wow there are some good beats here. Even some cool melodies. Even some Kraftwerkesque stuff in the 2nd half of the album. More enjoyable then I expected. 3 🌟

Well, this is certainly interesting and different. I had heard their name for quite some time, just never listened to any of their music as far as I can recall. I rarely encounter this style of music ("House"? I think?), and I don't expect I'll make a habit of it, but this album has some really catchy tracks. After a while, though, it felt like I was in a fast-moving video game with lots of lights and colors flashing. Also, I don't really like dancing, so I am a terrible judge of what makes good dance music, but I can see the appeal of this album for people who like to dance.

Not bad but pretty basic by Daft Punk standards. Clearly their debut. I like their newer stuff better but I understand why this is on the list.

Innovative and fun for no longer than 3 minutes of any song. Which is a shame, because they had no clue that the songs were all wayy too long. Like Jay Z says, Less is more. Anywhore, what can I really say in light of the fact that its a classic album with wide influence. Like yes it sucks, but it was necessary for 808 and heartbreak.

Not there best album but a solid debut

I’ve never liked listening to straight up dance music in an (unmixed) album format. And this one is 75 minutes long – so 40 minutes of filler. The 90’s technology – specifically the Chemical Brothers inspired noisy bits – hasn’t aged well, but the bass lines still rock and the disco-sampling French style that they popularized is still going strong 25 years later.

Just so long. I think if each song was like a minute or two and there were more different beats it would be interesting. I still like some of the songs though, so 6.

Some tracks were repetitive in a not-so-good way and were edited with a whole lot of distortion at times. Still, grooves like "Around the World" keep this album at 3 stars.

This was OK. I'm guessing this is on here because it mainstreamed electronic music or was very influential in some way. It was a little lost on me, though.

It's an absolute classic, but far too long.

I like electronic music. That's something that people who know me well tend to pick up on. However, there are many different kinds of electronic music, and I usually go more for the kind that I sometimes self-deprecatingly describe to my friends as "photocopiers murdering each other" than the more oonts-oonts varieties. This is at least partly because I don't like dancing. The music of Daft Punk, on the other hand, is made specifically for the dancefloor, and if you want to bust a move for 74 minutes then they have you covered with this one. Sometimes I really wish I was the type to hang around in fancy nightclubs. Best song: Revolution 909 is silky smooth.

I think it is a cool album. Lots of fun sounds. But i found it very grating.

Apparently, their original intent was to dribble these tracks out one at a time as they were creating them. Then they decided they had enough tracks for an album, and assembled and released it this way. That is unfortunate. While I understand there is a place for this music, and I might actually enjoy dancing to a tune or two, to listen to 73 minutes of this back to back is a tough ask. The best? Maybe “Da Funk”, where I am hearing an echo of Sly’s “Dance to the Music”. The worst? Definitely “Rock ‘n Roll”, seven minutes of a minimally varying riff of repetitive electronic squawks. If not exactly nails on a chalkboard, it was close enough. But that is really splitting hairs. It all sounds pretty much the same.

Fun album, of its time. While Iconic, its not one I would listen to regularly. Some really strong almost ubiquitous tracks and the rest of the album not sure about. Incredible how the band have made such a legacy for themselves over just 4 albums by having these everywhere songs

Way too long. Way too repetitive. I was surprised I didn’t like this more. They didn’t really complete this homework assignment very well.

I know there is so much hype around them; I just don't get it. It's not my scene for sure. I think it's also context-dependent; it might not really be music to just sit down and listen to. Definitely important for the genre, and with lots of positive reviews to show for it, it's boring and repetitive for me.

Not the Daft Punk album I would have chosen to be in the book. Another L by the author. Too common. They should have went with Discovery. I’d have even been happy with Random Access Memories as well. This album isn’t bad, but it’s not what a majority of people would have selected, nor the album I believe should have been selected personally. Daft Punk deserves to be on here in some capacity for sure. They’re an influential duo who absolutely dominated the popular music scene for a very long time. The book writer loves using debut albums for bands that have infinitely better albums, and this is a prime example of why that just doesn’t work a majority of the time. Yes, it’s important in that it was Daft Punk’s first album, but compared to their later stuff, a lot of this album does just come off as Homework, rather than something you need to actually listen to before you die. But no, they wanted to give you some deeper cuts, so we got this instead of something much better and more deserving of actually making the list. I’ll admit that I’ve always found Daft Punk to be a little overrated to begin with as a whole, but I’m still kind of a fan regardless, I guess. Maybe not, I did listen to them growing up a lot, but I wouldn’t call it very impactful on my life. Daft Punk makes Electronica for people who don’t normally listen to the genre. They’re the Call of Duty of bands in that sense. There are thousands of artists that are objectively better in every single meaningful way, Daft Punk is just the band who happened to become insanely popular instead, so people latched on to them. And that’s not a bad thing. It is what it is. They just aren’t as important to me as most other Electronica bands I listened to growing up, and especially now. Ironically enough, if you want a couple 5 star French Electronica albums specifically, play me some Justice. Now that’s a band who know how to make some real bangers. This music is just so dated, and while that’s not always a bad thing, it kinda is here. This is just kind of repetitive and boring, especially for an album that’s over an hour long. The boring albums always just insist on being over an hour long, because of course they do. Even for club music it’s repetitive and doesn’t do much to change up the complexity of the beats on virtually every song on the album. I don’t honestly love this album, but I also don’t outright hate, or even dislike it. It’s just kinda meh. Not bad. Just meh. Keep in mind, this is just my review of THIS Daft Punk album. They have albums that are infinitely better than this one. It’s just not a good selection outright, I’ll say it. Bad choice. Not my favorite album. Not a particularly good album. I spent the day listening to it hoping it was going to get better, and it just never did. I don’t even love “Around the World”. You want to talk about repetitive?? That song is maddening. My favorite song on this one is “Da Funk”, as it was one of the few I recognized, and was able to tolerate. I was really hoping to find a reason to give this one a 3, but man, I would never return to this. It’s just bad and boring unfortunately. Sorry guys, this one absolutely did not do it for me and for that reason, it’s getting a 2.

I know I should say that this album is amazing, and it was awesome and I loved it. I remember when this came out it was echoed Around the World, Around the World, Around the World. In the world of the late 1990s where Blue Chip companies were pouring money into pockets and ecstasy was the dance hall elixir of life, this album hit. Now, despite quality production and pop appeal, it felt really redundant after a while and I lost interest about 1/2 way through. For an EDM fan, this could be huge but for a mid-life dad on a Saturday afternoon, this became background. If I had a key song it was Indo Silver Club because it had the most movement. Will I return for another trip Around the World, Around the World, Around the World? Only time will tell…

I don't have a long attention span for this type of music at all and this record is an hour and 13 minutes before even considering listening to the bonus disc, which I didn't do. This record is WAY too long and only a couple tracks really interest me. There are more than a couple tracks that are just irritating... the weird squealing/screeching or some other ear-splitting effect that they mix over an otherwise normal EDM beat/bass groove make them intolerable. If they cut out the tracks that are pretty much designed to break your speakers or eardrums, this might come in at a tolerable length and keep my interest for the whole thing. As-is, it's an ok record that fans of this genre love but is just middle-of-the-road to me.

Some high points like Around the World and Da Funk but overall just too repetitive for me. I found it a slog to get through.

Listening to this album felt like homework. At first I was a little bit excited, like: nice, daft punk, lets do this. The start was ok but it got a little bit repetitive, but it felt like it was building up to around the world. Then around the world came and I was like: niceee. And then it too got repetitive. And the rest of the album was downhill from there. Didnt want to finish my homework but I did cause I had to. So yeah. Two stars cause it wasnt like completely unhearable, its daft punk after all

Really disappointed. The album is called Homework and it felt like homework to get through it. I knew a couple of tracks: Around the World (great) and Da Funk (pretty good). The rest was just repetitive techno with very little to keep me engaged, possibly useful in a club/dance situation but hard to just listen to.

I had such high expectations because it's Daft Punk! But it turns out Daft Punk started with really repetitive and boring music! So I didn't really enjoy this!

Leaves me cold. Can't imagine why it's on the list. But I didn't actively hate it, so that's something.

Listened on the beach in a small southern town. Didn’t make it any more enjoyable. I’m sure this is important and interesting to some people, though. One time during the Gay Pride parade my daughter and I got a photo with some folks dressed as Daft Punk. It’s one of my favorite pictures.

This album consists of super repetitive beats that belong in a dance club. They're not bad, they're even pretty catchy sometimes. I got used to it the longer I listened. However, the album is quite long and it overstays its welcome as a standard (not dancing along to) listen.

A lot of this is repetitive - seems like more music as part of the environment instead of a statement on its own. Initially liked it but the monotony of it really got to me. Follow on: Herbie Hancock, to hear electronic music done well.

So this is the birth of 'French house' and the beginnings of some dance music superstars. However to my ears, despite liking some of the sounds I hear (and there are a couple of catchy hit singles) this is not an album to listen to in its entirety without being in a club or chatting to other people. The tracks go on far too long (I even find this on their excellent fourth album at times) and are rather one dimensional with a limit to the ideas presented in each track. I am aware that there is a steady improvement kin terms of melody in the ensuing work but I regret to say that I found this album rather boring, despite some interesting samples in places.

Repetitive lead to boring, and then annoying.

I lament the fact that electronic music is a thing. I understand some “artists” are incapable of playing actual instruments, but can be “talented” at using computers to simulate music. But I just don’t see how repeating the same sound for eight to ten minutes is acceptable music. It’s background noise at best. Erik Satie started this trend in the 1800s with “Gymnopaedies”, which wasn’t bad, but led down the slippery slope to minimalism and whatever this album is. Sorry, France, but your music sucks. Except for Edith Piaf and opera. 1.5 stars.

Two or three certified bangers on here, that's for sure. But that'd only clock up <20 of the interminable 74 minute runtime. As an album, it's overlong, under-baked, tediously repetitive and full of filler.

Maybe this album was revolutionary in the electronic music genre back when it was released but compared to what they were doing 10+ years later, this is a bit of a snoozer. I was at a low 3 stars on this for about 2/3 of the album, but then it just kept dragging on and on so I'm dropping it to 2 stars.

On this list I've heard every piece of music Neil Young has written and collaborated on. I've seen the Beatles move from a poppy boy band to a psychedelic group of old guys who then went their own ways to do weird solo stuff (much of which I've now listened to). I've also been force-fed numerous shitty pop rock albums by individual bands all across the UK and USA (fuck the 3 kings of leon albums on this list). You're telling me that the *one* daft punk album I need to hear before I die is *Homework*!? Sure that's where they start, but as with all those other artists there is no celebration of their growth until they are properly represented on the user list. Homework is not that interesting, and while there are some good songs and ideas, many other tracks just sound uninspired. Give me discovery, RAM or even Alive and we might be talking 4s/5s, but this isn't it. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

The title is fitting because it felt like homework getting through this album. There are some good grooves--"Da Funk" and Around the World" especially--but ALL of the songs are super repetitive and go on way too long. It would be fine for the dance floor but, for casual listening, it doesn't make for a great experience.

I could definitely hear the foundation for the much better later work that would come out of this. But just taken on its own, I very much, to my own surprise, did not care for this album.

A lot of this was fine, but never very interesting. And then they'd mix in weird and annoying sounds.

Easy to listen to in the background. Some songs were slightly annoying, but I kinda still liked them? Around the World is the best example of this. Production is great, I love all the tiny and weird elements in the songs. This is just not my cup of tea, though; it is repetitive and not very engaging. It is good for playing in the background though I guess. Favorite Track: Revolution 909

This Homework assignment start out great, it was easy, bouncy, and fun. Still warmin’ up when ya hit Da Funk, flyin’ high with Phoenix, just chillaxin’ at the beach with Fresh, the cruzin’ Around the World ( Popcorn .) All is good, very enjoyable. Should have ended the album here. You hit a major brick wall at Rollin’ & Scratchin’. By the time they wrapped it up with Funk Ad, I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Major point deduction for the second half. (2.1*s) First half still holds up 30 years later, second half was never good.

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? Are these the guys with the helmets? I like the Tron soundtrack in the context of Tron. First impressions before listening: I don’t know how I’m gonna feel about 70+ minutes of French house. I’m not even really sure I know what makes French house different than regular house, but house is not my jam. Favorite track(s): Da Funk Overall Thoughts: Not a terrible way to spend the workday, most of it was fine but I found a few of the songs to be very annoying. I’m can’t believe Around the World was the big hit off of this album because was the most grating track to me and got old very fast. I imagine this album is great to party/rave to but that’s not what I was doing while listening.

Raw French house and techno built on looping filter-house grooves, punchy drum machines, distorted bass, and sparse, processed vocal snippets drives with relentless repetition. Listening feels like being locked into a flashing club loop where the same beat cycles until it blurs into pure sensation. The result is hypnotic and endlessly monotonous.

I really enjoy electronic music, but this is just too much. Repetition is my main complaint. Repetition is my main complaint. None of the songs stand out too much, and they don't go anywhere interesting either, which is annoying given how long both the songs and the album itself is.

Da Funk is not enough to save this.

an admirable but mistaken first album by Daft Punk. Love them but this is a miss for them. Odd RAM or some other album was not on there.

Despite containing two certifiable bangers in Da Funk and Around the World, this feels very experimental, like they're trying to find their style so throwing in all the beats and bleeps they can find and hoping some of it pays off. Personally, I don't think it does and I can't recommend it - try Discovery and Random Access Memories for a funner (it's a word now) experience.

I’m probably gunna lose a lot of electronic music street cred, but I’ll say it anyways, Daft Punk might be the most overrated and overhyped of my generation. They are so insanely mediocre. This album is such a massive disappointment. I have a lot of friend specifically from highschool that was really into them (probably still are but I don’t talk to all of them very often) so I didn’t go into this album with unreasonable expectations. I don’t think they were going to be the greatest electronic band I had ever heard. But what’s sad is they are not even in the conversation to me. First off, most the memorable and iconic things about daft punk are visual. Their costumes are cool, their live shows are elaborate and fun, their music videos are entertaining and sometimes mildly goofy. But when you take all those things away, all your left with is repetitive songs that are usually heavily if not entirely sample based (which I can respect, a healthy amount of sampling I think is fair game, but they push it. Like to the point where it feel plagiaristic. Seriously if you don’t agree listen to robot rock and then listen to Pull my strings and tell me what you think). But the most egregious error that electronic music is notorious for is just being too fucking long and overstaying your welcome. And this album has like the greatest example of that phenomenon EVER. And what’s funny is your probably thinking I’m going to say around the world, and that’s because you are right and we both know that the song is like 3 mins too long. Sometimes this can be lost on people cause if you watch the music video it will help significantly to hold you attention at bay. But when you listen to that fucking song by itself, it’s like torture. I’m just begging the song to finally end near the end. Seriously, if it wasn’t for the fact that this album contains “da funk” it would get a very deserved 1/5, but it will have to settle for the flimsiest 2/5 instead.

And the concentration of electronica just continues to rise. That's a shame here, because I'm sure this album was significant. Daft Punk's debut surely would be important. But ignoring that, what's here is just not standout enough for me to be left with an impression. It suffers from the same issues I have with a lot of this genre, maybe more so here than in others. They build a musical idea one piece at a time, then they repeat that idea over and over again until the song is over. It's just so repetitive, to the point where the music is having the opposite effect on me, bogging me down instead of pumping me up. If you cut all these songs in half, then I maybe I'd give it another star. Highlight (Or really just a song that I knew before): Around The World

I wanted to like this album. I have heard lots of great things about daft punk but have never heard one of their songs. This album ran the gamut of I really liked the song to I can't wait until this song is done. I listened to this while cooking dinner and definitely found myself dancing while cutting up veggies. Then the next song came up and I could not wait until it was done. I would certainly listen to some songs again, but not the whole album and I certainly would not buy this album. It did make me interested in hearing some other songs by the group.

Good group just to long of the same thing

The music these two make is not really for me but even then, there are a lot of elements whose presence I cannot comprehend. Why are many of these tracks so long? Why do they wait so long before adding elements to the basic beat? And why do the samples continue to be played long after they overstay their welcome? I'm happy for Daft Punk fans that like this album, I really am, but I hope that I never have to listen to this album again. Best songs are Da Funk and Teachers. 4/10, many opportunities for improvement.

I am a fervent fan of electronica and its many sub-genres. And while I am a fan of their later works, particularly the TRON Legacy Soundtrack and RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES, this album was very underwhelming to me when it came out in 1997 and after listening to it again today, my opinion didn't change. The only tracks worthy of appearing on any album at all is "Around the World" and "Da Funk", with honorable mention to "Teachers" because it was a sweet idea of shouting out all of their influences, but it ultimately doesn't groove. Even with "Around the World" being one of the stronger tracks on the album, the only version of it that I enjoy, and has lived in my collection for decades now, is not from this album, but rather from their live album ALIVE!. This particular album version of "Around the World" feels like it is about 2 to 2 and half minutes too long. Similarly, to me "Da Funk" has always felt like it should have been about 5 to 10 beats per minute faster than it actually is. I do enjoy that their music is not reliant upon lyrics at all, and that when words are used, it is primarily for their rhythmic value and not for their literal or figurative meaning. The production and engineering is solid, but the arrangements and dynamics, with the exception of "Da Funk" and "Around the World" don't vary much. Ultimately, I don't think this album should be on the list, at all. There were other 90s albums that were far more influential that could occupy this spot.

It's unbelievable how long and boring this album is. I've always known Daft Punk as a dynamic and danceable electro-pop band—spacey, witty, and with a certain tongue-in-cheek attitude, even when their eyes are hidden behind those futuristic helmets. But this Daft Punk album is nothing. Take away the truly great "Around The World," and all that's left is utterly tedious garbage. As a fan of electronic music, both danceable and ambient, and especially of the Berlin School sound, I can only say this album is rubbish, regardless of what other reviews claim. The song "Around The World" is great, though.

This is starting off v funny. Hit Da Funk and feeling a little more up my alley. And now we are starting to get a little too repetitive for my taste. I can see how this would have been very different at the time. I'm surprised to say I'm not going to save this one. I know "techno" is my genre, but I think it's just not got the grit I normally go for. It's not angry enough :D

I feel like I am listening to the z103.5 drive at 5 street mix. Not my fave, but there are some classics, though I am used to hearing much shorter versions of them when they're being mixed. Other notes: - Around the World is so much longer than I realized - Rock n Roll hurt my brain, and I hope to never hear it again - This whole album makes me feel like I'm in space in the 90s - Alive had me nodding my head a bit Easy listening, but overall not quite my tempo (iykyk). 2.5

Electronic music just isn't my thing, I feel like so much of it is too repetitive. I had some hopes for this album, because I like a lot of Daft Punk's songs (mostly from 'Random Access Memories'), but I'm afraid that a full album is still too much and that it got boring after a while. skipped the first song after looking @ lyrics I LOVE A GOOD BLENDING INTO THE NEXT SONNGGGGG revolution 909 sounds like at universal studios the fast and furious part of the studio tour and ur like listening to the party from afar. love it. WAIT WHY THIS KINDA BOOGY MAKING ME GROOOOOVE sooooo glad that daft punk left the challengers soundtrack to trent reznor and atticus ross. this album gives me a headache and is definitely no cure for the sunday scaries. turn ts off. however i would however love if i was older and enjoyed clubbing bc then i may enjoy this.

Pretty disappointed with this one. I had high hopes because I listened to Discovery for the first time recently, and I know I can’t fault for making one of the greatest albums of all time and their debut album not be able to live up to that, but it certainly set the bar high. Repetition is fine if the music is interesting or at least pleasing to the ear. Much of the album was not. Around the World was great though.

Unless you are at dur club, I don't really know who this album is for. Around the world is a great tune if you've had the assistance of some 3rd party substances. But in the car or having a cup of tea, its pretty meh and same same. We get it, around the world. And the rest, just loops of the same drum beat. And that Rollin and Scatchin song has to be one of the worst tunes ever made. Its like they put a drum loop behind my 2001 56k modem as it tries to download LinkinParkAndLimpBizkitLiveHiddenTrack.mp3.exe from limewire.

Each song removed one star. When I reached 1 star, the monotonous beats made me so dumb that I couldn't count anymore. But eventually I have become so dumb, so that I liked oh yeah and burnin .....star star

Can’t say I’ve ever listened to a daft punk album before this. Not in a rush to again. Overly long, surprisingly heavy with filler tracks and sounding quite dated. A far harder pass than I was anticipating.

All the tracks build up and off of the standout hits you've heard on the radio, heck you can hear parts of da funk in the opener. And that's about where the cleverness of this album ends. Rock n roll is an abrasive repetitive slog that lasted 5 minutes too long. And now that I am about 3/4 through, the entire thing is just too long.

This really feels like more of a collection of musical ideas rather than a full fledged album. I get it, this is house music and that's the point and maybe I would enjoy it more if I was out dancing but that still doesn't mean that I have to enjoy it on a Tuesday morning sipping coffee.

I get that these guys are good but they're not for me.

It’s impossible to listen to this in full while seating in a sofa. The sound is great and I can see why it’s fantastic for a dance floor, but it’s sooooo repetitive! Long live Daft Punk, though.

I dunno what to do with albums like this. The beats and sound effects are creative, but it’s “meta-music” — no one is actually playing those drums. The music is designed to facilitate group experiences, in a rave setting. As a result, it’s simple and repetitive. Not really something to sit around listening to. I’ll give it a 2 — even though I can’t get through an entire album of it as a pure listening exercise.

Hmmm thought I already had this on the list, somehow but maybe listened to it after seeing their documentary 🤔 73 minutes?! That’s brave. Let’s see… It just felt kinda basic. Just repetitive loops with layering. Quite like the inbetween tracks and introduction of environment and atmos. But just not so impressed with the songwriting at all. Pretty uninspiring and unskilled. I also want to acknowledge it’s importance as an album, of its time and important for EDM but 1997 doesn’t limit its possibility to THIS, right? Wrote the above when I thought I was on the last few tracks and realised there were actually still 6 left and now I’m just getting annoyed at the cheek of it and the maddening empty repetition.

I’m sure at its release time it was mind blowing. I just couldn’t get into it today.

I'm sure fans of the genre could educate me about why this is an important and worthwhile album. But as an outsider, I can't hear anything but background music during a club scene in a bad movie. It may be good (or it may not be… I don't really know how I'd tell the difference), but I don't particularly enjoy listening to it. It’s very long and I don’t think it really earns that length. Party albums typically are long and don’t make great listening experiences when listened to from front to back and are full of very long songs to dance to for a long amount of time. There are a few great moments, but the album’s length knocks it down from a 3 to a 2 for me. I have heard great things about later Daft Punk albums, so maybe I’ll check those out. 2/5

Went on far too long. Not for me

When the mood takes me, I can really enjoy Daft Punk, especially their later stuff. Unfortunately, the mood left me pretty much where I was for this listening and I found it fairly plodding. I suppose it paved the way for what was to come but this one doesn’t really do it for me.

I think of myself as someone who likes daft punk, but maybe I'm just someone who likes discovery and a few songs off RAM, because this was not a fun listen for me

There are a couple of iconic melodies buried in here somewhere. But honestly? It’s mostly just a drum machine looping for what feels like six hours. At times it’s less “groundbreaking electronic album” and more “two teenage boys pissing about with a Casio keyboard they got for Christmas.” It’s so relentlessly repetitive and vacuous that at one point I started to wonder if the album was just stuck. Probably tolerable as background noise while mashed and playing Pro Evo, provided you don’t focus too hard and you just let it slip quietly into the wallpaper of your brain. I’d enjoy a solid minute or two. Rounded up to two stars for the influence and a couple of good moments, but I’m not doing any more "homework" on this.

Favorites: Revolution 909, Da Funk, Around the World I'm not sure what happened on this listen. I used to love this album, but I found myself quite irritated revisiting it. Homework is fairly primitive in Daft Punk standards, and it's far from their most innovative or even interesting.

I really wanted to like this. I like the whole idea of Daft Punk and the music first identity last philosophy. But some of this was just plain boring. Rarely do I find myself needing a break while listening, but that happened on this record.

Very weird few songs, but apart from that, quite nice.

I’m not coked out enough to really dig this. Daft Punk could’ve used some creative control.

Far more interesting than anticipated. Great beats, excellent production, but also very dynamic in its tracks. Halfway through the record hits a dip though, Rollin' and Scratchin', Teachers, High Fidelity are just boring, and the record never fully recovers. The second half misses the energy of the first, perhaps because the record is too long as well.

If this is what technology has gotten us, give me a dusty acoustic guitar and a shitty sounding harmonica, because in the wrong hands this is the result. To call this a difficult listen is an under statement, it wasn't hard to listen to, but it was difficult to hear the same thing over and over and over again. This was a test of endurance, where repetition is used to test the will and sanity of the listener, not unlike torture. Clearly, it might have had a different effect, if I was stoned, drunk and f*cked out of my head at a club or rave at 4 in the morning. Unfortunately, I don't listen to my music often enough that way.

I have often been given the impression that I would like these, although I've never heard any of their music before. And I can sort of see why, but unfortunately not. They just don't have the je ne sais quoi of, say, Ozric Tentacles or The Enid. Sorry, not for me, but better than a 1. So 2 it is.

I thought it was very ordinary, and way too long to listen to repetitive tippy tappy plinky plonky noises that go round and round for over an hour without any progression, theme or meaning. There was a couple of catchy tunes. but after the first minute of the track, you are like, next please.

Too repetitive / not enough drugs

Not my thing. I feel like a lot of the music that I find annoying - and which is far more pervasive now than in 1997 - can be traced back to this. And yet that bassline in Around the World (which I have certainly heard before) is about the greatest thing ever.

Made it about 30 minutes in before I tapped out. That Rollin & Scratchin song gave me headache, and then I saw there was still another 45 minutes more to go. Fuck that. How come every god damn techno album has to be over an hour? These fucking songs are repetitive enough as is. Maybe you need be to high ass hell on Molly to make this shit enjoyable 🤷🏻‍♂️

68/1001 - Lots of TR-909 and repetition on this one. I heard Discovery and RAM are better albums from them and I'll give them a listen. Burnin' was kinda cool and saved it from a 1. I listened to Discovery and found it much better, probably a 4 or a 5.

Sounds like two printers fucking Edit: (02/02/26) I went back and listened to Discovery and Random Access Memories, MUCH better albums that made me like Daft Punk. Don't judge them based on Homework. Changing from a 1 star to a 2 star ranking because I like their other work.

'Da Funk' reminds me too much of being 17 and sneaking out of boarding school to go get fucked up at the local dance club, even though I detested the music but loved the drugs and alcohol. And then of being bombarded by 'All around the world' any time I was around people. It felt inescapable and still nearly 30 years later causes some sort of post traumatic stress. Besides all that, I can say that I appreciate the musicality of all this, but I have grown to become a big fan of repetition as a concept, in music in art or in life. And of great big thwomping beats that may induce headaches or nausea if played loud enough.
