Reviews (page 13 of 14)
They could never make me like U2
First 3 songs are good and recognizable, but after that I am quickly reminded why I don't like Bono.
This album is frustrating, because it’s almost pretty decent, but there are just a few things with U2’s sound that I kind of just can’t do. Either way, I’m not sure this has earned the classic status that it is often given. I will say that if you heard this when it came out, I can kind of get it. At the time, I could have seen the Edge’s signature tone and effects being atmospheric and kind of futuristic, but unfortunately, time has not been kind to The Joshua Tree, and this guitar sound is, to me, synonymous with advertising, which really is too bad. That being said, it is sorta U2’s fault, if your signature guitar effect is a delay pedal, then you can’t complain if it doesn’t sound all that exciting to future generations. Something I can more confidently blame on U2 is Bono’s performance here. Something about the way he sings makes me feel like a cat being pet backwards. His pitch isn’t always there, he tries ducking off into expressive little detours that just don’t feel right to me, and when he gets a little growly, it kind of sounds like he has something stuck in his throat. A lot of the songs here, on a writing level, are at least melodically decent, if melodramatic, but what often really makes or breaks an individual song for me is Bono. For example, on I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, he plays it pretty straight and let’s the melody speak for itself, and as such, it’s one of my favorites on here. Conversely, Bullet The Blue Sky is pretty good, until Bono starts doing his thing, and I’m immediately sucked out of an otherwise atmospheric song. I would also like to note the baffling Trip Through Your Wires, which stuns me with Bono yelping to no particular gain, and harmonica playing which feels as though it has no place on this album. Although, I did actually like the subdued approach of the last two tracks here: Exit and Mothers Of The Disappeared. They both tone it back and let the atmosphere speak instead of trying to coat then in obnoxious vocals and huge choruses. Overall, this was actually kind of interesting to me, I just didn’t like it that much. But I do think there’s value of some kind here.
This record was decent. I feel like after the first 3 tracks passed, it just took a nosedive into decent. Favourite Track(s): I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For Least Favourite Track(s): Exit
Peak 'Nirvana Killed My Carreer'
The hits are good, not sure much else stood out.
A whole album is too much U2.
Listens: 3 Standout tracks: Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For The album starts off strong enough, probably because I recognize the first two songs. After that, I really have no desire to keep listening. It's fine background music, but I'm not looking forward to any of the tracks. Usually by the third listen of an album, I tend to hone in on songs I like (or dislike). I've encountered no such songs. They all sort of blend together. I could stop listening to this and will most likely never have any interest to go back to [the album] again.
Booooring
I’m far from the first person to notice this but: Bono seems like a bit of a cunt, doesn’t he? It’s all technically fine, I suppose. I’m just quite bored by it, and the ones I know already I wasn’t excited to hear. It drags. I think it’s for blokes who identify as stoic and see their volatile hometown relationships as reminiscent of Burton and Taylor. The harmonica interested me when it reared its head - I liked Trip Through Your Wires. But overall, a big old shrug from me.
I didn’t like it when U2 put their music on Apple Music and I don’t like it now.
Boah, ja klar. Klassiker, all killer no filler blabla Trotzdem - Bono nervt.
An ok U2 album
A few good pop rock songs at the beginning, but overall I find it disappointing. U2 is not worthy of being called a rock band The guitar work is so amateur and embarrassingly lackluster. Bono has a great voice but often sings in such a pretentious and insufferable style. The only thing that impresses me about U2 is that they seemed to pioneer this brand of modern saccharine pop rock long before it was ever-present in the 90s and 00s
'Our love turns to rust / We're beaten and blown by the wind, blown by the wind.' Bono's no Boss, but that's clearly what's he's going for w/ this one. Apparently about 'America,' the fantasy as well as the reality, The Joshua Tree is really about U2 being the most maddeningly mawkish band in the history of pop music. 'I can't live, with or without you / with or without you.' I bring up Bruce Springsteen b/c, unlike Bono, he brilliantly negotiates the sentimental and the concrete. U2, on the other hand, is absolute schmaltz. Plus, it goes w/o saying that Bruce knows America better than these faux. The best songs, 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' and 'Running to Stand Still,' are doomed by vague religiosity. The rest? Acute syrup.
Meh .. downhill after the first 3 tracks
Not for me Very boring
easy to listen, but not much my style
Bro, I just don't think they're my vibe
High quality, great performance, great production, totally forgettable. There’s something about U2 that I just don’t get. And apparently this album is Irish/American folk based? Should be just my thing, and yet.
Okay, I think we've had them on this list enough times for me to state - I think I hate U2. It's all so mawkish, and desperate to be both taken seriously as an art piece and still radio-friendly enough to sell to your right-wing auntie. They clearly think they're God's gift to music, and nothing they've ever produced makes me think they're anything close. The guitars have so much echo and reverb on them that they sound like they're playing the arenas they clearly think they deserve, and Bono's singing always has the cadence and emotion of a man trying to gently pass a kidney stone. This album, especially, has the twin problems of having songs that I despise because they've been played on the radio constantly for 35 years, and songs that I can't even focus on because they're clearly filler padding out the runtime once the singles have finished. It's somehow simultaneously over-produced and not thought out. It's an achievement, I guess. I don't even know if I want to give this one star, as then it'll be on my homepage as a reminder, and honestly I just kind of want to forget that I ever listened to this.
I've given U2 a chance during this process and the big hits do work for me, but there are way too many long songs with very little going on other than guitar effects and Bono crooning. This one starts out strong but fades fast.
Couple of bangers on here but other than that it's just a little lackluster
Great opening three tracks, then tails off pretty hard
Just wasn’t my type of music.
I tried, but it’s mid at best. Feels like an album only people who lived through that era have fond memories of. It’s like an old flame, you remember the highlights which were few but ignore all the lowlights which was the majority.
nojaa, taas tätä areena rokki industry plant manufakturoitu synteettinen paska rokkipaska musikkia paskaa. kanssaasi vai kanssattomasti kanssasi. vai ilman kanssaasi= vai ilmava kassasi? miteävn vitussa miten on näin tylsä ääntä, ääni on änin nukahtavatavaa ja biljoona miljardi u2 fania mitäääh kanssasi vai eikö kanssasi???? hoooo ooo aaa ooo. hoo hoo aa ooo ooo.. ilman jvai kanssasi. vai ikanssasi vaiko eikö kanssasi. pum pum pum pa pum pa pa pum pum pum woooooooo. huuuuuuuuu oooooooooo aaaaaa ooooooo... jos bono olisi olemassa niin raiskaisin. bullet he lbue sky
how do they achieve this mix of cool, cheesy and unbelievably annoying?
This music is oatmeal. There is not a single interesting thing about it. It is listenable, I guess. They deserve a bonus start for activism.
I've never liked U2 and i've never forgiven them for that time when they forcefully downloaded their new album onto everyone's iPhone. I want to give this a spiteful 1 just because of all the truly awful music this band subjected us to in the late 90s and 00s, but I should be fair and rate this particular album on its merits. In that respect, I will admit that some of these songs are huge and I can't deny their importance and relevance but they still don't resonate with me. I didn't hate this as much as expected but I didn't really enjoy it either. Also, as a fellow guitarist who also uses too many effects to hide his mediocrity, i've got to at least give props to the Edge here. We can smell our own...
First 4 songs are well-known and generally OK, the rest of the album is just boring and uninspired
It's just not that good.
Fine? Never been a U2 fan. Some songs I saved to playlists. “No Exit” was the highlight. Cher’s cover of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” eclipsed the original for me.
Tg Bono
Oldies, vor allem 'With or Without you' und 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for'. Im Moment nicht ganz mein Vibe
Not for me, everything sounds like contemporary Christian worship music
I can live with or without U2
The proto Coldplay - a few undoubtable bangers you wouldn’t put on but wouldn’t turn off. The rest being forced soulful filler.
I don't know. It's alright, I guess. Not very interesting
I just can't.
custom_rating: 4
It used to be the only album of theirs that I liked. It’s just ok in retrospect way too over used in sports and advertising
Another fucking U2 album already. Fantastic. Why do I feel like U2 is one of those bands the music industry really tried to convince we like more we do. Maybe it’s because I once bought an iPhone with a U2 album already loaded onto it. Fucking hell!
Ah yeah, another two. We’re on a roll.
More like "Whiff o' whiffout poo" amirite, more like, "Where the sheets have no stains" right?* *these are the only two good songs on the album actually, the rest is sadly boring and performed by cunts.
This album is ridiculously front loaded - the first three tracks are the big hitters while the rest is largely unmemorable. Even though the first tracks are completely overplayed, I have to give them some credit; they're overplayed for a reason. But I can't imagine ever choosing to listen to this.
I have never knowingly listened to this album but a lot of the songs were familiar but then I realised they all sound the same. I’m not a fan and I have never really understood the hype
uuu
I just don't get it... I genuinely thought track 2 and 3 were the same song for the last 20 years, so here we are.
unfortunately this sounds like glorified hold music… highlights include: “Bullet The Blue Sky”
I listened to this album multiple times, and it never felt too special to me. I tried to like it, but nothing stood out. Nothing was bad, and I definitely enjoyed the band's sound, especially on the guitar, but it felt a bit too generic to me. Favorite Track: Bullet the Blue Sky
The first three tracks are great although overplayed, meanwhile the rest of it felt like a bit of a drag to listen through.
Uhhhhh I know the first three songs on this? They've gotten a lot of play. In the context of yesterday's Coldplay album-- I find U2 a lot less grating, but ultimately boring. I have never listened to U2 on purpose. I probably should've been less mean to Coldplay with the stars, but now that I've set my scale as 'mean' how can I go back?
U2 is CVS-core that has been co-opted by the corporate algorithm and shoved down our throat for our entire existence. Perhaps if we bury this album in a time capsule, go about our lives without "with or without you", and open it up in 100 years the next generation will find something interesting about this album.
This fucking sucks
More of a spite rating than anything. Probably would have earned a 3, but this is the second U2 album this week, and I wasn't thrilled about it.
The hits are the hits, the rest doesn't do anything for me.
Eh, forgettable.
Very long, I just can't get used to this music
Dunking on U2 is too easy and not cool, but all I hear is NEXT GENERATION AUTOMATED SOLUTIONS AWARD WINNING 24/7 TECHNICAL SUPPORT SCALE YOUR BUSINESS WITH SEAMLESS CLOUD TRANSITION This is of course a result of U2s massive success and distinctly unoffensive sound. Hits are not too bad to be honest.
never been a big U2 fan to begin with so im a little biased. I understand the appeal. But for me the vocals are never anything super special, and the edges overrated and mediocre guitar doest add much.
Overrated
I like the beginning of this song because the beat is very cool. I don't like the rest of the song because I am not a fan of the way the lyrics are sung with the beat.
the first intro is long and the song is okay I guess I don't really like it. the second one is okay but I don't like it either the last song the intro is also kinda long but not as long as the first one I like da background music to da last song.
I didn't really like it because its not my type of music.
I'm simply not a U2 fan. It's okay, but not more.
I fucking hate U2, however I can’t deny these first 3 songs on this album are awesome. My complaint is they all sound the same, and then the rest of the album is weak, and after this U2 always sounded the same. Boo
RIP John McGeoch and Keith Levene
His first two songs are classics but the rest of the album is a little too one note for me. I fell like if you've heard a few of their songs you've heard them all
A few tracks weren't as unbearable as I thought they would be but most of them were quite shit. 2/5
I guess if you front load your 3 biggest hits onto an album you get to be on the list of greatest albums of all time, even if the rest of the album is mediocre at best. There are songs that are recorded so quietly, I found myself having to relisten to them so I could actually hear the full album. It's terrible. I hate it. I hate U2. I know there's more U2 albums on this list, and I'm sure I'll hate them too
I have a hard time explaining why, exactly, U2 sucks so hard, but they do.
Despite the fact that I sang along to a lot of it, I don’t care for it or about it. Respect the song writing, disrespect the vibes.
I'm very surprised to see another U2 album on here. If you've heard one song, you've really heard them all. Easy tunes, fade into the background, nothing remarkable but not awful. I feel AI would make an excellent U2 album.
I have heard it before and honestly I just skimmed thru because I really do not care for U2 at their most arena ready sound (late 80s and their post 2000 music), it's something about how both it sounds too poppy to be interesting to me, it has some of U2's worst instincts in songwriting beginning to take hold (The Edge's guitar hello) and just the feeling that the lasting influence of this album being shitty music for ads. There's too much about this album that simply doesn't make it enjoyable to me knowing me and knowing how I feel about the pop side of 80s arena rock, their 90s output is forever the best part of their discography, not this
Groupe connu, second album généré après "Achtung Baby". Même constat : l'énergie des premiers albums a disparu, et certains morceaux sont très répétitifs (with or without you). Dommage ... =>2/5
I’m happy for U2 and all their fans. Bono seems cool, his stock went up considerably with her performance as Clay Callaway. Edge is great blah blah blah. All that being said… I wouldn’t mind if I never heard U2 again. Just the most boring stuff I’ve ever heard. Kollaps > Joshua Tree. U2 = The Irish Eagles.
first three songs were decent not really a big fan 5/10
I was expecting more from this one, especially given how much I enjoyed War. Most of these songs are just really boring and feel like they are trying too hard to be theatrical.
Not a huge fan, sounds just kinda like one song for 50 mins
I to taki z gatunku tych nieśmiesznych.
Not bad for a dad rock. Mocne 2
I don't know man, it is a U2 album.
Getting this album right after Talking Heads (produced by the same loser) is really funny. Talk about a downgrade. Look, it's not an garbage album musically, it's really not - and that's what makes it so awful to listen to. This entire record bar one song (With Or Without You) is just one big build-up, with no release. Every song on here makes me long for women across the world who get so close to finishing in the bedroom, yet don't. Really does remind me why my girlfriend sleeps in a separate bed. The fact this album is so fucking boring is really what makes it terrible. The music is so inoffensive it becomes offensive, what a paradox that is. still better than The Smiths tho
The Joshua Tree - U2 (1987) Oh dear, this is what passes for one of their better albums about 80% of this feels like the same hazy/up in the air vibe that you would hear in an insurance ad where the guy in the ad is doing some job at sea or rescuing a koala or some other bullshit. From my previous exposure to this band that seems to be their winning formula to landing 4 albums on this list somehow. The other 20% is pretty bad though, seriously what the fuck was that bit in Bullet the Blue Sky where he just starts yapping about putting your chips down and whatnot. As with most albums where I find the music too samey I will just go with the song I didn't mind the most and just discard the rest. Highlight: With or Without You
The last two tracks are okay I guess, but Jesus this ain't even mid. 3/10
i dont like u2 fuck i dont wanna listen to this u2 is so boring i dont get the appeal. all of these songs are too long goddamn
Wanted to like this one. I just didn’t like it. All the songs sounded soft with rounded edges (apart from Bullet the Blue Sky and Exit). A boring album with poor, muddy mixing. I don’t get the hype.
A couple of the non-hits on this album are actually kinda listenable
no
Tiene algunos highlights pero en general aburrido
huoh U2. en ihan ykköstä kehtaa antaa kun kai tää on teknisesti kelpo musaa, mutta lähellä ollaan.
pelo amor de deus U2 é intankavel
Sort of the musical equivalent of cornflakes. Entirely listenable and inoffensive but only one or two moments where I felt the music did something interesting or unique. U2 have much better than this elsewhere in their catalogue.
Stuck on what to give this album, to me it isn’t bad but it just doesn’t do it for me despite the first few tracks being pretty good. I don’t like U2 and this album won’t change that
One star for With or Without You, another star for I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.
Not a fan of this one, a couple of ok songs. But an overall "meh"
I don’t care for U2 and this didn’t convince me to change my mind
I have tried to get into U2 - but... I still haven't found what I'm looking for. I agree U2 should be on the list, and it's good to see an influential band from outside of the UK / US represented - I just don't want to ever have to listen to this album again. U2 are basic, Bono is a wanker, and With or Without You I'm making an Exit, to listen to something better! ... and then I made a monumental mistake by looking at the full list to see which album/s from my all time favourite band from Ireland will be coming up. U2 features 4 fucking times and The Cranberries don't feature at all. I am livid.
- 0/11 songs added to main playlist - Dad band - Not a sound that I really find interesting - Had no idea “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” was by U2 - Immediately love the vibe of Bullet The Blue Sky - Bono’s voice is kinda my nails on a chalkboard - Favorite song: Bullet The Blue Sky
Truly awful
Ugh. Just ugh.
I shouldn't keep reviewing U2 albums so I'll make this the last one. Popular music should touch the heart and the emotions. It should lift us and bring happiness. It should enable us to share in other's pain or better understand our own pain. U2 never do this for me, so I'm out.
The great shimmering turd of Irish music. Are these the most overrated band of all time? Maybe not, but they're definitely a contender
Not as good as I remembered it being.
U2 sucks
U2 fans will love this U2 album.
I will never forgive apple for putting them on my phone
2,3
Thank god that this is the final U2 album on this list. Now I can finally go back to never having to listen to U2 ever again.
There isn't much of interest beyond the first three tracks on this one. I'll probably play some of these songs again, but likely will never play it cover to cover.
Not bad but not exciting. Also still hold a grudge against them for infiltrating my first iPhone
yawn
Aggressively mediocre.
They get a second star for Bullet The Blue Sky
Några bangers, men U2 låter lite skitnödiga.
Heard before. Not the biggest fan.
It’s 50 minutes of U2 noises. First 3 tracks are very recognisable so they’ve got that going for them. It’s fine. People love to bash them, but they just fail to elicit any emotion. This is the first album from the list that I forgot I was listening to … feels like absolute radio is just on in the background. Tepid: 4/10
I have nostalgia for this one listening to it as a kid on car trips, my parents had the CD. It's def relaxing and easy listening. My personal favorite U2 album is Zooropa (there's actual cool and unique shit going on), that said, there's nothing "wrong" with this. It set out what it accomplished to do. But I don't find it very interesting outside of my anchored nostalgia. 2/10
Alt for overspilt P4-ræl + Kurt Nilsen-vibes
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and With Or Without You are the only decent songs on here and they’re very early on. The whole album could have been about 15 minutes shorter
Mediocre musicians with a good singer playing bland pap. U2 are the band people who pretend to like music say are their favourite band.
When I first saw this I though, 'really'. But then I thought 'well.... they do say it's a good album'. And so I tried to listen with an open mind, but I'm sorry it really didn't change my opinion of this band. They are the most overrated band probably of all time. It's not objectionable but equally, has no good points. The only time they ever had a decent song was when they guested with an incredibly talented singer and guitarist by the name of BB King. Now for points, well I've sort of dug myself in a hole here. It's not worse than Big Jobby from Friday, but I only want to give it a 1. But to keep this all going along fairly it'll have to be a 2.
Ok
U2 equals meh
Favourite song was "Exit" because I was dying to exit the album at that point. Bit of a slog to be honest. ("Exit" was actually decent though)
Pre me having knowledge that bono was an insufferable moron? Dad used to listen to this a lot.. nostalgia might be having an effect but I kinda like this. Starts to trail off quite a bit. tbh the tracks that aren't memorable singles are pretty bad. 2.3
Not terrible, but this sounds like department store music, a lot of the instrumentals sound like the default ringtone on old Cingular wireless/Sprint flip cellphones. Average song length > 4:30 was also not appreciated considering how safe a lot of the record sounds.
Didn’t hate this as much as I thought I would. Decent band. Just bit boring for me
never understood why these guys are so liked and popular, maybe because they popified rock music? anyway boring, one track that wasnt a single was not boring to me but thats it
Starts off with 3 genuinely excellent songs, especially 'With or Without You' which is beautiful. Then you get to sit through another 35 minutes or so of the most lifeless rock music you'll ever hear. Thanks U2.
Most of the songs have a sort of classic 80s poppy post-punk (?) sound that isn’t really my usual taste, what with the reverberated pick guitar and generic chord progressions. However I think that sonically a lot of this album just sounds really good and Bono has some great vocal moments (though also a few choices that came across as quite corny to me, but those were rarer). Too many of the songs sound very similar and don’t build or variate to much for me to really think of ever revisiting this album as a whole, and I think just a track or two could have been cut for time entirely to tighten the package a bit. There were a few standouts that I REALLY liked: Bullet The Blue Sky and Walk To The Water have a sound that’s a mix of early 70s Led Zeppelin and turn of the century grunge, and those more experimental, darker sounding tracks got my attention completely. Beautiful Ghost also made me stop in my tracks with it’s hauntingly beautiful synth ambiance and dissonant chord pattern. It’s a fine album, in some parts a good album, but not a great album both due to my personal taste but also in some part objectively due to a partly repetitive and safe sound throughout.
Never been a fan of U2's brand of soaring arena sized pop music that relies too much on the soar as its primary song-writing method. 'Joshua Tree' at every turn only works to reaffirm that disinterest in me.
Meh. Hard to get over the arrogance of someone willfully naming himself 'Good Voice'
Still don’t understand the appeal. The only two songs I like on the album are Red Hill Mining Town and In God’s Country. The rest is just snoozing past me
Yhe some all time great songs but also 8 other songs
40/100 My first time I got a second album by an artist! And it's U2. Admittedly it is a tiny bit better than War. But the bands Pop Rock style does little to nothing for me. A real standout is the classic "With Or Without You" which is the only song on here really worth revisiting
U2 is overrated. I did try to go into this one with an open mind, I don't think I've ever sat down and listened to a full album by them before, but alas I remain underwhelmed.
I'm not a fan of U2, but that's my problem, not theirs.
I've never understood the appeal of U2 and this album has not changed my opinion on them.
Being the bass player in U2 must be the easiest job in the music industry.
Not a fan of U2 and this didn't do anything to change that. Low 2.
Good composition but man do I get bored with this whole aesthetic
I'm exactly the right age for this album to be a 5, but I never got into U2. They always felt like they were overthinking it. Tunes made to a formula. Much like Coldplay, but Bono makes them sond even less sincere. There's no denying this album has an epic, soundscape feel. Any track on this album would make great background music for a 8mm film shot out of a car window as you drive through Idaho. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For is a good song. There's a heartfelt ballad in there somewhere, but the U2 boys drown it in pointless layers of gloss. I'm taking a star off for Bono.
I still haven't found what I'm looking for... from U2. i don't really have anything to say about U2. It's fine, I guess. With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For are fine... but past that the rest of this album falls pretty flat in my opinion. not sure U2 is ever really going to be up there for me, but sometimes that is how the cookie crumbles
Felt meh after first 3 songs. Almost gave another star for With or Without You's use in The Americans finale 👌
Another band that fell victim to my music snobbery. The first three albums were great, but they were dead to me after that. I did the same to Blondie after Parallel Lines. Anyway, this follows the Rolling Stones template, front loaded with a couple of hit singles followed by a miasma of averageness.
Never understood the appeal of U2. Dull but not quite as bad as i expected
Soft rock 4 pussies
This is obviously a good album. The first 3 songs are radio classics at this point and just looking at Spotify's count, they have ~200 million, ~700 million, and ~1 billion streams, respectively. That being said, I've always just felt meh about U2. They're a divisive band and I sit on the side of the division that doesn't get it. I think my problem with the band is that their music sounds like it's been created to be pretentious. It just never feels genuine. From Bono's moaning, drawn out style of singing to The Edge's (I mean, c'mon with the name already) use of effects to seem artsy. It just doesn't sit well with me.
Very eh - just okay. Wouldn't revisit.
meh
No matter what the music, Bono turns everything into a ballad
saw a review talking abt how this Gen D easy listening and wow never had they been so right
I'd never heard this album before, which is quite astonishing given the number of people who hailed it as one of the greatest albums of all time back when it came out. It's pretty much as I expected, polished and cinematic, but not my cup of tea at all. I feel mean giving this only 2 stars, but it holds no interest for me at all, even though I can see it's not objectively bad.
This has to be the most overrated band in history. They were so immensely popular at a time (still are to a degree) and I don't really understand why. Yes, they do have some good singles but the deep cuts are just dull dull dull. It's not as bad as Achtung Baby, which had nothing redeemable about it but I don't get the hype.
I can understand why they're good but I can't feel why they're good.
I just don't like this group
A quintessential two star album for me. I get why it’s Important but dear lord what a slog.
Not for me. Liked the first 4/5 tracks then I just fell into a deep lull. Also really don't like Bonos voice
boringgg
An overall very plain album. Not really anything that would get into my playlist, but it's a decent album, I guess. Not my cup of tea, to summarize it. Vocals are plain and somewhat incoherent, and the lyrics are just straightforward, something that I personally don't really like. (I like a little poetry in the lyrics, something that lets the listener make their own interpretations.)
👎🏻
I was prepared to hate this, instead I merely didn't care much for it.
6, not sure what mood i would be in to listen to this again. one listen was enough. gives off white mid western passive aggressive dad rock.
I'm not exactly sure why U2 broke out to be as big as they were. Apparently, The Joshua Tree was their superstar album and yet, it's lackluster. There are decent songs here, but THIS is the album that propelled them to stardom? I can't get over it. If "With or Without You" and "One Tree Hill" weren't on the album, it would be an easy 1. Those highlights bump it up to a 2. Best Songs: With or Without You, One Tree Hill Worst Songs: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, In God's Country, Running to Stand Still
I do not like this band
While there were a few highlights in the first half, come the end the songs were rolling past unnoticed. Best song: Bullet The Blue Sky.
I don’t get it. Whiny voice. Boring music. Bullet the Blue Sky is the only good song.
U2? More like PU2. With or without you is the only saving grace here, so fucking boring.
Not the biggest fan of this one to be honest
I dont really klick with U2 i mean those songs are good but nothing had me surprised or excited on this album. I understand if people like and love it but im definetely not one of them. 2.5/5.0
I just... don't like U2, I guess. The best songs here have been way overplayed on the radio, to the point that I can't stand them, and the rest just sound like throwaways to me. Doesn't help that I just don't dig Bono's voice.
First 4 songs were bangers, but the rest was just filler mush that I wasted my time on.
meh
I feel very conflicted on this one. I really enjoy the music but the vocals just rub my ears the wrong way. I can’t quite pinpoint exactly why, but I think they’re too ‘breathy’ and drawn out. Every time a new song starts I really get into the intro, then the vocals come in and my mood deflates. I’d love to hear U2 with a different singer.
It's ok. A couple of good tracks that I enjoy. Good quality production. Just not really a huge fan of U2 or of the whole album.
Middle of the Road AF. Never understood the hype, and don't feel much different after hearing this. Great production of course. Favourite track: Bullet The Blue Sky (sick drum sound).
listening to this album was boring. all the songs sound the same. i found “trip through your wires” and “bullet the blue sky” to be the best ones and even those i don't really like. it’s safe to say i will never listen to this album again.
U2 and Coldplay occupy the same exact mental space for me. They are probably the most insanely popular milquetoast music acts I can name. Nothing captivating nor engaging here at all, yet simply agreeable. The musical equivalent of a plain rice cake.
Couple classic bangers but overall felt like a big jam band album. You can tell the 90s were around the corner.
5/10 Not a big U2 fan but even i have to admit this album is classic
I do think the U2 greatest hits would be absolutely full of bangers... But I also gotta say that listening to an entire album of U2 feels pretty damn boring. I used to like this album so I'm not even sure what happened lol. But here we are. I'll call it a 2 leaning 2.5.
Highlights - Red Hill Mining Town Didn't like - Nothing I actively hated, but quite a lot of it I just found quite dull Overall - The first three songs I'm really familiar with just from hearing them around, and then I didn't know any of the others. Familiarity with the beginning of the album makes it difficult to judge with fresh ears, but I do feel like U2 are a mediocre band with incredible guitar effects. They really do create a whole soundscape out of 3 or 4 notes, which is kind of impressive. But I'm having trouble with this album for several reasons - firstly, and not really their fault, but especially the beginning of the album really just sounds like the direction that a lot of congregational CCM took later in the 1990s-2010s, which has very specific associations and vibes for me that I try to avoid. Some good moments but overall quite samey, reliant on overproduction, truly uninspiring basslines, and very jesus-y lyrics. The later album was better, which is rare, but again I really needed a lot of them to just go somewhere - "Bullet the blue sky" is kind of a sick rock song but it's all verse! I liked Red Hill Mining Town. The rest was meh.
i remember singing track 2 in the shower, w h a t a belter this album is unsatisfactory
Not notable, bland pop. Bono doesn't do much with his voice that really interests me
Meh
Bland arena pop, kinda what I expected - nothing ground breaking
U2 aight.
Some classic tunes, but somehow don't like it.
Eh, not for me. 2/5
When every song is an anthem, none of them are. Joshua tree is immaculately produced, but seems constantly concerned with making you feel emotional.
É um álbum bonito, significativo e poético. Só não curto muito.
Although "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is a classic 80s hit, the rest of the album was not insanely enjoyable to me. I honestly felt a little bored and ready to listen to something else for most of the album. 2/5
"Sad eyes, crooked crosses / in God's country" I had a grudge against U2 ever since Apple forced us to download their shittiest album on itunes. I later realized that I really enjoy very specific songs of theirs- "Sunday bloody sunday," and can tolerate U2 songs when they come on in the dentist's office, or get played on the radio (those are the exact people that listen to U2). The album starts with three of their most commercially-viable songs, and I enjoyed the opening riff of the album quite a bit. T2 - "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" is listenable, if not overplayed. (playlist, i guess) T3- "With or without you" is dad-rock to its core, and the epitome of a radio song, but there exists still good musical ideas at the root of the song. T10- "Exit" has some Joy Division-esque sounds within it, and I enjoyed that aspect of the song. U2/5
Some iconic tracks in here but oh my god, Bono loves himself so much. Vocals are so self indulgent. Overall decent album. Very one note.
Boring. Exit is a standout track to me
I've never bothered listening to U2 ever, just never seemed like my kind of thing. And I was right, a lot of it just comes across as self-indulgent. Can't quite put my finger on why, but there's no soul to any of these songs. 2.5*
Honestly, not as bad as I thought it would be. Big stadium sound. Bono's vocals impressive at times. Not my sort of thing but I can see why this was appreciated at the time.
I understand the significance, and I suppose through the lens of one who got to witness this album in its heyday, this was groundbreaking. I just feel like everything U2 has done has now been done much better. Also that one episode of South Park has eternally tarnished Bono for me.
The Grandfather of Arena Rock. Not my style or preference, but I can absolutely see the influence on rock bands from the 90's through now. Fav tracks: Exit, In God's Country
There were some moments, but mostly a slog
Didn’t realize the first three songs were such heavy hitters but the rest of the album sux.
Better than my baseline opinion towards U2. Impressive 3 song run to open the album. Bono undeniable, but also just Too Much.
Heard it quite a few times. Decent but wouldn't say it's a must listen
Alt for overspilt P4-ræl + Kurt Nilsen-vibes
Decent
Saccharine-ness aside, I really enjoy I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and Where the Streets Have No Name is a solid opener, but the rest of the album is so forgettable and horrible.
as a Dubliner I have an in-built U2 bias, but when I was young and innocent I bough the Joshua Tree and listened to it so so many times trying to figure out what the fuss was. Still don't get it. U2 have some terrific singles (first two on this album, for example, I never really liked WOWY), but they're not an album band. And yes, Bono is a gobshite. One star for each outstanding song.
I’m not a fan of U2, but I can understand this album being on a list like this.
Sure sure sure
Eerste 3 nummers? Hits, hits hits Streets have no name is toch best een mooi nummer. With or without you is niet helemaal mijn ding Idunno.
Favorieten: Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
U2's music is just plain boring. It's the first thing you get when you Google the meaning of the word 'boring', it's the kind of music you put on when you're trying to fall asleep. Still later U2's albums prove thatsometimes it is better to be boring than to be straight up horrible, so I give them the 2 stars for that
This album really drops off after the first three songs.
Starts out like a greatest hits album. The rest just feels like half-awake filler.
There’s genuinely fewer bands which frustrate me more than U2. Bono is an unabashed cunt, but a talented cunt. The Edge is an absolute extraordinaire who introduced an entire spectrum of possibilities for what a guitar could sound like. The band’s early output, I believe, showcases these elements at their very best, and I was pleasantly surprised by Achtung Baby as a late period gem earlier in this project. But the Joshua Tree is the record which supposedly captures U2 at the peak of their powers (and popularity), and I was looking forward to hearing some of the deep cuts on this record. The lyrical themes aside (they’re obviously shite), I wasn’t that impressed by the overall tone they were going for on this record. For the most part, it’s just a really pedestrian record. The singles are well known by now, but apart from that there isn’t really much else to highlight. While The Edge blazes yet more trails from a production perspective, the absence of strong riffs relegates him so far to the background he’d have been as well just playing in the fucking deserts the band were so evidently captivated by. “Where the Streets have no Name” is the obligatory master stroke, but where that track is chiming, anthemic and deeply urgent, the rest of the record barely jerks itself from a sonambulent state. On the whole, quite disappointing from a band that are capable of so much better.
It’s ok
Still Haven't Found still sucks. With or Without You still sucks. Didn't know the second half of the album, given its reputation I hoped it would be more fun jangly stuff like Streets. Nope, pretty dreary. In Gods Country is ok though. Big disappointment.
Really struck me how much this sounds like its doing stuff from other albums we've listened to over the past few days but somehow cheaper (even though it's probably much more expensive). This was a slog for me, even the arena rock anthems that kick it off didn't really hit for me. Hard to say it's flat out awful because there's some intriguing snippets, but it's bonkers how massive this is. Fave track: Bullet the Blue Sky
Thought I’d already submitted my review but anyway - still have not managed to be won over by U2 here. Just seems rather uninteresting music compared to everything else coming out around the mid/late 80s. The Americana theme is intriguing but not enough to pull me into those samey syncopated guitar rhythms. Maybe the big hits are overplayed on classic radio or something else but this just didn’t tickle me. Fave track - One Tree Hill
Ja ok
Pretty disappointing and slow album
Hoop nietszeggendheid, maar niet verschrikkelijk.
Never cared for these guys - take themselves way too seriously. Plus Bono is a faux progressive. Hanging around rich people and politicians doesn't quality you as a progressive.
I only kinda liked Bullet The Blue Sky
2nd song was ok, kinda well known but the rest of the album was meh
I’m not a huge fan of U2, although I’ve seen them play live twice. The Joshua Tree is considered to be the seminal album, but I found it lacking. Outside the hits there was little substance to the songs…
Meh this was a pretty mid album
I listened for Mike. It's one of his favorite albums of all time...But I just don't like U2. I can stomach the first three songs on this album and the last song, but I find U2 to be boring and cheesy. I'm sorry. I really tried. But I can't.
Bono makes me cringe and the music is boring
Bo No
Gutless flat album that goes nowhere. Spots of texture here and there but no thrust. Constantly seems to lead to somewhere more interesting but never quite manages it. The lyrics are bland and static, the mood is steady, stable and finishes at an ordinary moment. The album stands plain as a wardrobe.
Decadent unlistenable boomercore. Literally the most boring record committed to wax.
All credit to Brian Eno: he produced a U2 album that I can at least listen to, if not necessarily enjoy. It just kinda went in one ear and out the other.
Aversjon
Maybe I'm just not meant to be a U2 fan. I've tried this album many times, and it mostly just makes me feel like I'm dying inside.
I do not care about U2 at all and have no context or nostalgia for this. First time hearing most of these songs. They seem just pretty pedestrian and ordinary and bland, which is likely why it was such a success. 2 stars.
Quite boring to be honest
Perhaps you had to be there. The hits are there and represent the bones of almost all the contemporary Christian I grew up with, the production choices are delicate, and the band sounds like itself while keeping things varied, but I simply can't get inside any part of this record. Chalk it up to the non-American American concept, maybe.
I'm not really a fan of U2... A lot of this just doesn't do anything for me. I like some of the moodier bits and some of the soundscapes on songs like 'bullet the blue sky', but the rest just doesn't hit for me.
All the songs feel the same. It's a alright sound, but not my favorite
I've never been a big U2 fan. Growing up I was more of an REM guy..... and like Blur and Oasis, you had to be on one side or the other. This album though has a collection of tracks that in isolation nail the "stadium anthem" sound. All lumped in together though, it doesn't make for a cohesive listen. 1 star off for Bono being a knob
This album blew its load in the first 4 tracks. After that, it stands as an impressive spectacle of a band that wholly refuses to do anything interesting while still sounding like they think they're making incredible moves. Palpable pomposity. And even in that best front section, the band is nothing without Bono- who for that portion of the album sounds powerful and impactful. Bullet in a Blue Sky, though, is the one time on the whole record that the music, without Bono, caught my good attention. At its best it is catchy, easy listening mall-speaker-rock, which to be clear is not exactly complimentary. At its worst, this project succeeds in emulating the wide open desert spaces the band was in part trying to evoke- barren, tedious, and the kind of experience you pray has passed you by by the time you wake up from your nap on the roadtrip.
Too repetitive. Lost interest very quickly
Really boring album, literally no songs stand out. If this is one of U2's best ones I don't think I'll like them very much.
Is there where Christian artists get their inspiration
So I really don't like U2, but I gave this a chance. Not as terrible as I'd thought it might be, but still not my thing
Every single song was just such a slog. Five minutes of quiet in the beginning, then starts to build up, then either stays built up or goes back to being quiet. Now, I know that sounds like most songs, but there is a specific brand of it with U2 that makes it all just blend together. It's only getting 2 stars because while I didn't completely enjoy it, there's no denying the 1-2-3 punch that is the first few songs. Would of been better as an EP with just those and Bullet the Blue Sky
i’ve never been a fan of u2, and this album signifies why. It’s just not good.
It's pretty de rigueur to dump on U2 for their tiresome and self-aggrandising frontman, so I thought I'd dump on them on the basis of their tepid, insipid music. Even the familiarity of the two openers doesn't offer any more than a faint buzz, more akin to 'ah, I know this' rather than 'ah, a nice warm shot of nostalgia'. On Joshua Tree, U2 have a sound and stick with it, Edge's guitar spinning and jangling away atop relatively competent stadium rock. It's an identity, sure. However, if I had to describe the sound as anything, it would be 'vaporous'. Given the absolute sincerity of the lyrics, it's a minor blessing that this stuff evaporates into the aether soon after listening.
Honestly a bit boring. Not a huge U2 fan anyway so makes sense why it didn't resonate with me, but just expected a bit more. Didn't give it a 1 as it was fairly relaxing I guess... bout to fall asleep
Meh.
Boring! Sorry. I know some of our group have affiliation with U2 because their mum's loved it etc. Well I don't and I've never cared much for them, sorry. This was cringe and dull.
I just find them quiet dull. A lot of it sounds the same and I kind of forgot I was listening to anything when it was on. This is supposed to be their best album so I think that's a final nail in the coffin for Bono and the U2s.
Bono is a cock.
mid as hell. overproduced, overdramatic stadium rock shit. I dont see how this gets so highly rated on here. some of the guitar work is alright but thats about the only interesting thing here.
2.5
Not rubbish, but not for me.
Je préfère Bullet The Blue Sky, Exit et Mothers Of The Disappeared.
sooooooooo boring after the first 4 songs
Listening to this album again for the first time in 33 years was torture. It was a flash back to being forced to go to a Christian youth camp and listen to bad cover versions of the songs on it. It is not that I hate U2 or this album and admit that some of the songs a great when I hear them by themselves but together to my ears this is a cacophony of pompous twaddle Sorry Bono
Just don't like Bono and find it hard to separate art from artist... poor excuse, I know. Can't help but enjoy 'With or without you',. I like the guitar and drums throughout the album. Overall not that impressed, 2 stars.
Hi-Red Hill Town Lo-everything else I loved this album as a kid, but as I grew older, it just became more and more irritating to listen to…from the constant driving, repetitive guitars, to Bono cycling between growls and whining, it’s hard to listen to now. I still like Red Hill Town, but the rest of the album I can do without.
I liked early U2 stuff but this marks the turning point. Bongo/Bonio bollocks
U2 are just a bit boring. Very safe. Very standard. They write a decent pop track. Also not a Bono fan!
A bunch of boring AOR hits follower by more boring non-hits.
U2 were well into their overblown grandiosity by this stage. They really should have called it a day after Boy.
menee unilääkkeestä, en kyllä kuuntelis uudestaan
Not my taste but it’s alright
Fun fact of the day. bono is the largest ever recorded piece of shit in history
It's just not very enjoyable. I know that's not a very insightful review but it's all I can muster.
First three tracks are classic U2 and even though I like them I don't think I ever necessarily will feel the need to listen to them again on purpose . The rest is immediately forgettable and made no impression whatsoever. 5/10
Not sure who it was but I think it might have been Henry Rollins said somewhere what a ridiculously overrated band U2 was. It was like I had been brainwashed and was finally snapping out it and ever since I've not been able to enjoy them. They are a band with a limited amount going for them other than their singer's voice yet they've managed to stick around for 40 year, the last 20 objectively without any good music. This album was definitely a highlight and I know people rave about how good a singer Bono is and how amazing the Edge's guitar playing is, etc. But when you take a step back, you realize they are an average band with great production, a few catchy hooks and way too much guitar delay. I know that will offend a lot of people and I'm truly sorry for shattering this illusion, but the sooner you come to recognize it, the sooner the world can finally get rid of Bono!
Feels timeless, still fairly uninteresting.
Better than the other U2 album I heard on the list, which is not hard. Enjoyed the last track, and not just because it signalled the end of the album. The rest of it is just so... safe.
big arena anthems! Sounds like something that would appear on a 'best of classic rock' cd in the bargain bin in a gas station
meh, 1.5 stars
Ugh. Too much Bono.
I could not bear / bother to listen to it all. Too much Bono. Good singles though.
With or Without You") ex). Where The Streets Have No Name". Bäst: "Where The Streets Have No Name"
4th June 2021 Listened in the shower and in the supermarket after finding out I got a second round interview for the FT. Anthemic tax dodging.
Too classic, not my type. However, the ambient is really nice.
2/5 didn't really like it, despite a couple of nice songs
Yeah, the album has a lot of U2's biggest hits, but its just not really the sound I typically go for.
No me inspiran. Creo que su cumbre como guitarrista es With Or Without You. Gran, gran canción. Bullet to the Blue Sky está semi brutal. Me gusta.
I groaned when I saw I had to listen to U2. Everything about this band from Bono's lame "activism" to their polished pristine sound has made the thing seem so sterile and boring. For what it's worth, it is well-produced and easy on the ears. It's just so underwhelming, so uninteresting. It just doesn't do much for me, even if it is competent enough to not be strictly bad. Maybe that's my confirmation bias talking, I dunno.
Overly Dramatic Band
