Reviews (page 13 of 13)
It sounded good but I didn't really get into it
Blech. There are elements of interesting songwriting in here, but I just don't like their overall sound, especially the awful singer.
Okaish new wave. Wouldn' listen again.
Not terrible, but I think it is a bit forgettable.
Not particularly memorable
This gave me a headache
A voice only a mother could live
Truly never heard of this band. But typical 70's rock. Definitely not my style.
See No Evil - Good Venus - Mid Friction - Mid Marquee Moon - Good (long) Elevation - Good Guiding Light - Good Prove It - Mid Torn Curtain - Mid
a nice jam. i like the beginning of the album better than the end.
Kinda weird
Post punk
4/10 just a very below average mid album
See no evil Marquee Moon Kinda bland. Nothing crazy to talk about
The music was fantastic, but the lead singer's voice was dreadful. If I could just listen to the band rock out, I'd give this a 4, but that singer made give up
Enbart någon låt eller två som höll.
While I can appreciate the impact this album allegedly had on rock, I just didn't have much of a good time listening to it. Just wasn't my cup of tea.
Marquee Moon is alright, another one of those albums on this list that isn't bad, isn't notably good, it just is. None of the tracks do enough to separate themselves from each other except the title track, which only does so because it's more than 10 minutes in length and entirely unnecessarily so, which means I'm giving it a 2 rather than a 3. Guiding Light the best track on the record.
Pretty cool. Feel like a broken record explaining why 70's rock is not really my thing. The Doors were clearly much better, mostly because of the additional richness of the organ. This is just passable.
Very forgettable album. Nothing stood out. I’d give it 2.5 stars.
Ok
Sounds classic punk Don't get hype but not my thing so did not finish :(
A couple of songs okay. The rest not my jam.
Klang gut.
Indie pop - I'm not a great fan. Vocals are pretty cap. Four tracks in and it's not looking good... However, Marquee Moon, at over 10 minutes was listenable and pretty ok. Apart from that one good song, there's nothing else on the album. It's a 2
Overrated.
Good but not my thing, it’s a style that doesn’t always engage me.
So forgettable.
Almost put me to sleep
Not for me.
Great but not my thing. Top samey not enough melody.
Gosh. Y’all weren’t kidding. This was just okay.
I dunno, didn't leave any impression
it’s not bad, but compared to the other albums on this list, i feel like it’s pretty mediocre.
Better if they edited out the vocals - personally can’t understand the overall high scoring for this. Really tedious in my books. 📚
Particularly wrong with it, I just didn't really get into it.
passed with little notice
fine - venus, marquee moon almost got me, forgettable
Too much jam bandy noodley guitar work on too-long songs, but I liked some of it. Wouldn’t reach for it again
Eh.
Yep, that is an album. Guess it just isn't my taste.
Even as I'm listening to this I'm finding it forgettable. It was ok, but not loving it.
Not bad but this is an album where I can’t really get past the vocals, I just don’t really like em 2.5/5
Meh
Surprised I haven’t heard these guys since I’ve seen every Wes Anderson movie? Overall, just ok for me. Starts off pretty good but was less into it as the album went on. I’m sure I’d be called a poser by some cool kids if I was caught listening to this publicly
Not felling it.
Came into this thinking "I want to like this but probably won't." Side 1 was a pleasant surprise - two bangers off the top but 9' of Marquee Moon lost me and I never came back.
I was grooving to this at first, but the novelty wore off as the album continued.
Nice Hitchcock shoutout lol
Melodic punk?
unremarkable rock not bad, just kinda cookie cutter imo wont listen again
The band was good, the lead singer not so good
Decent album. Nothing exceptional but it wasn’t terrible by any means
naja, hatte ich besser in Erinnerung
Definitely the blueprint used by Talking Heads.
2/5 forgetful
Stimme wie Jagger, Sound Ende 60er, musikalisch interessant, fremde Skalen, seltene Gitarrenspielweise.
Not really my thing. I fucking hate this keyboard so much. Worst impulse buy I've ever made. FUCK!
Every song sounded the same, and the sound isn’t particularly good. I recognized the 2 big hits on there. Nothing bad but definitely not a band I’d delve into their discography for.
Ja opzich prima. typische jaren 70 rock. 'Marquee Moon' is wel een lekker nummer maar duurt zo verdomd lang.
Rollarit ilman munia? Välillä jopa vähän ärsyttävän kuulosta.
Tuskaton kuunnella, ei ihmeellinen
Story telling music... not a fan.... whiney and I don't know.... makes me think they/he is self absorbed ?
Nothing spectacular. None of the songs grabbed my attention and stuck with me. Basically nice background music while working out. Made it to the 6th track.
Didn’t even finish it
2/10 but not 1/5
didn't get through this one tbh i was quite bored
I swear to God als ik nog een 1970 album krijg ga ik gillen
Just another alternative 70’s rock album….
I’m sure this fits in somewhere in the rock n roll ark, but it kinda doesn’t grab me. Anything with a 10 minute song is a bit too much for me..
I can't focus rn it sucks ass I gotta do college shit, derivatives quiz tmo, gov test friday, but I can't start working on anything and its so annoying Didn’t have the time or energy to give it a good listen
Ugh I hated the singer’s voice. Liked the guitars but I was waiting for the album to end.
Song were too long the actual music wasn't bad besides the length and sometimes abstract riffing that was done, it could have been seen as enjoyable. ...And then there was the singing. It sounded like a balloon deflating.
In one ear out the other
Ima be honest... kinda forgettable. I need to go back and actually sit and listen to the songs to give it a fair chance
Not a fan. standout track: guiding light
Not really my thing
Great guitar riffs but the voacls turn me off. Just didnt vibe with it in general
Seminal but the whiny yelp singing voice turns me right off
2.5 another middle of the road one for me
Violent Femmes - punk/new wave sound.
Not really my jam.
natalia kills
Wasn't necessarily bad, just was not for me
Better than the stooges, guitars are kinda killer
Had to relisten because I got to distracted by my thoughts on the first go. The songs I thought were good with more attention were just okay. Good guitar but I just don't like this singing style
also meh
2/5. I wanted to like this a lot more but I don’t know, the songs were good but not awesome and the 10 minute title track was nowhere near the hype it was set out to be. The guitar solo was great but the lyrics and verses felt so chaotic and messy, and not in a good way. There were some good songs like See no evil and friction that I could listen to again but a weak album overall.
Not for me
Meh
Tough one to have right after close to the edge. Enjoyed the 3 minute songs, rest not for me
I’m not too positive on this one. I can’t really say anything bad about it, but there isn’t much good either. See No Evil and Friction were the only songs that actually had me interested in listening. The only other note I had while listening to this was that Elevation had a *very* familiar sound to it, but it was something I absolutely could not place. Everything else was just nothing special to my ears. I wish I had more to say, I really do. Marquee Moon is definitely one of the albums of all time.
2.5 Man, I really, really wanted to like this album. A band involved in the late 70’s CBGB scene that would go on to influence a number of artists that shaped alternative rock, including Joy Division, Pixies, R.E.M., and Sonic Youth? What a resume, one that seems like it would be an immediate sell to me on paper, but I just don’t hear any of that here. The album starts strong enough with See No Evil and has another high point in the title track, but everything else here is so boring. I don’t hear the punk influence, and I don’t hear the bands listed above or anything like them, instead I’m just hearing a style of artsy funk rock similar to The Talking Heads - a group I’ve historically not been the kindest on. Contextually, yes, I can see how this album could be considered monumental - it really doesn’t sound like any style of rock that had come before it, but that doesn’t make it any more enjoyable to me. Just because you did it first doesn’t necessarily mean you did it the best, and in this case I would rather just listen to the bands these guys influenced. I have no idea what they saw in this album that I didn’t (and I listened to this three times looking for it), but at least it resulted in much better music.
the singer can barely sing, very little musicality in the voice, which is a shame cause the guitar is pretty solid. marquee moon is a great sounding song that is way too long. most of the songs are too long
After the first two tracks, I was in a good place with this. Then track 3 is a 10 and a half minute version of track one? Bumbump bumbump for ten minutes. After already hearing it before?
First and foremost, I didn't enjoy the whiny vocals. And maybe not so much the repetitive rest of it. It just isn't my thing.
Marquee moon is a banger, I also think I recognize it from Tom playing it. That guitar melody was like deep in my subconscious. The rest of the album though….underwhelming. I understand WHY this album is here. But I can’t enjoy an album just off merit alone. I need something sonically interesting to hold onto and where this album stands right now, it is not doing that for me. Im bummed bc this album is super talked about in corners of the internet and i was expecting to see why… I think part of my rating can also be attributed to the kind of day I had when I listened, not much I can do about that. I am only a man.
None of it really stood out
throw away your television, now
Good not best
Very Clash-ish, early U2-ish and other bands from that era. Hard to appreciate if it was influenced by these or was an influence on these bands and others when looking back from the present.
Listened in the car so not ideal but seemed fairly unremarkable
Vähän liian valitusta, en saanut mitään irti. Ei kuitenkaan ärsytä.
Meh
"I hear that she likes to dance around the room, to a worn out 12-inch of Marquee Moon" Think 2.5 would be fair Fave track - Marquee Moon
I liked some of the instrumentation on this album, but the vocals kill it for me. After one listen I don't have any standout tracks.
Annoying voice. Overrated.
2.5
Discount rolling stones?
noh yrittää sentään jotain välillä.. osaa plchwingättää kitaraa osittain. vokaalit aivan persetttä huonolla tavalla ja niin... taas yks niistä jota ehkä ei ollu aivan pakko kuunnella ennen tuonelan portteja mutta noh.... kuunneltu on...kiva....jos oltaisiin keskiajalla.. antaisin kolikon, jesterille... huoh seuraava SEURAAVA! elevation
Didn't finish.
Peu d'intérêt. Banal
not bad. not great either.
Not bad.
Dafuq did I just listen to.
It's quite accomplished if you like punky style rock.
uninteresting and boring
I wish more songs on this album sounded like that final song - something like gothic Talking Heads. The rest of the album is very generic punky new wave. Not bad, but there's so many better albums in that genre.
Do not like the vocalist. While the instrumentals are interesting, all the songs are slow and sound the same. Not my cup of tea.
Surprised I have never heard of this group, Wasn't a big fan of this album. There is not one song that will stick in my memory.
hmmm
Not bad, but just not quite.....
This was very drab generic 70s rock. Minus 1 star for a creepy album cover.
Very overrated.
A load of absolute bollocks. Gets an extra star for some decent guitar.
Not bad, some good riffs on this thing for sure.
Mesmo percebendo a qualidade instrumental deste pós-punk, ainda não foi suficiente para eu empolgar.
was alright, some good songs, kind of forgotable
The album is mainly rock but has elements of punk but there hints of '50s music. It is about 45 minutes long was some unnecessarily long songs -one 10 and one 7 minutes. I was not familiar with the band. The album is better than a 2 and really a 3. I will round down.
Was nice to fall asleep to.
Boring guitar driven post-punk/rock album, with no standouts whatsoever. 2/5
Can definitely draw the line from this to a lot of the early-2000s alt-rock bands which is cool. Very samey sounding though.
I feel like I really should like this more than I do. The guitar interplay and melodies are cool, but I just can’t get into the vocals.
Me ha parecido un peñazo. Mira que tiene fama pero no he entrado. Lo mismo lo intento de nuevo en un futuro, pero de momento 2 estrellas ** y gracias.
mehh
mmm i don’t know. i really debated between a 2 and 3. his voice just really threw me off it was so whiny and honestly ruined the album. the music was not too bad, but there was some repetition to it that didn’t make up for his voice.
Talented band let down by awful vocals
Never heard of these guys before. Wish I had discovered back in late 70s'; definitely feel like leading-edge punk. Maybe ever a bit more refined than some of the Ramone's style music. "Friction" is catchy. Title track "Marquee Moon" did not do much for me until half way through, then it turned the corner and made for quite an enjoyable journey. Favorite song was the last - "Torn Curtain". Still, all in all, not much here.
Great guitar and bass for sure but i never really found myself super into the music, even after two listens through. Think I just hated the singer’s voice. Best Track: Was going to say Marquee Moon, but after listening through it again i found it kind of grating. Idk
leider fad und unspektakulär!
It was not my style of music.
I have literally nothing interesting to say about this album except that it has the usual problem of okay production but shit vocals
A semi unique voice (like a more punk mick jagger) with basic sound. Not a fan nor do I think this should be on this list. Only cool thing is a “punk” band in the US in 1977
Есть
Not my genre.
Not really my favorite, I listened to it but it was in the background and it didn't really catch my interest. 2/5
The guitar riffs are pretty awesome, but the vocals are not my thing, too high-pitched and...not good. I am debating giving it a 3 just for the great guitar. Also: Everyone is calling this punk??!? Do I not know what punk is??
Fine. Bit like the Smiths, bit dreary
Classic rock; weak vocals and repetitive choruses and melodies. Fav song is Torn Curtain.
The band sounded pretty good, but the vocals totally ruined it for me.
Sounds like a poor mans Rolling Stones, one or two ok songs, but otherwise, not great.
Reminds me a little of modest mouse, I fuck with it.
It was okay.
Another underwhelming punk album. There were some parts of Marquee Moon that were ok, but overall this was a dud.
Sounds like they paved the way for the strokes.
fell asleep midway through but wasn't feeling it anyway 🤷🏼♂️
meh, title track is kinda interesting but otherwise unremarkable
Look, I'm sure they spent a lot on guitar lessons and their mums were really proud they had an album. It's 10-odd songs that are in the same tempo, same key, same vibe, same sound, same lack of effects on the instruments. It's just uninspiring, uninteresting. It sounds like something I wrote in subelius when I was in year 10. 1977 album, already showing the limitations of rock and roll. I could go on. 2 stars
2 or 3
music is okay but i cant with the annoying singing style.
More not my thing. Can we get some my thing?
all of the internet algorithms really want me to listen to this album. i see it all the time. so this is the second time i've listened to it, and more than likely the last. the more i get subjected to the 70s in this list the more my prejudices against anything produced in that era are going up. it seems like anything good produced in that decade was made in spite of the 70s not because of them.
It's not bad, some pretty energetic cool rock and blues. The singer has a good voice, but the overly expressive way he sings is a quite jarring, and sometimes sounds bad but almost on purpose. I do kind of like him singing like that coz it gives this music more of an edge compared to The Doors. Good bits but not especially memorable.
Beetje veel van hetzelfde wat mij betreft
was enjoying it (and love the title track) but it just seems to get samey as fuck and a overall seems self indulgent. Franz ferdinand owe them a few pints... 4.5/10
Not a fan at all. All very one-paced and don't feel it has aged that well (maybe not their fault with others imitating).
I was just bored
kinda gay...
Listened to 01.14.21 The title track was the only one that I really liked. It has a Strokes feel. Almost as if the album/sound was a decade or two ahead of it's time. I feel like if it came out in the late 90's or early 00's it would have been a big success.
Not all that interesting, but it was fine.
Meah. Boring and boring. Annoying vocals.
I got distracted by new Cave halfway through this, and never made it back to finish. It's boring, didn't like it, it did nothing for me. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, it's just not my thing.
listened somewhat passively
Britisk 70’er punk, anderledes, guitar-præget
I personally did not like a single song
wasn't a jam for me
Malo
Bored as hell
😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
like my television,I turned these clowns off. 1
Not for me
Listening to this genuinely made me upset. These guys should be banned from making music - not that what I just listened to was music, but you know, just in case...
Would rather chew my arm off than keep listening to this
Do not enjoy this style of music at all.
ehhh... not for me
Minimalist, dry, and intensely self-contained, with long guitar passages that value precision over drama. While its influence is undeniable, the album can feel emotionally distant and resistant to engagement. Its restraint reads more as limitation than discipline here.
Okay. First song gives me beach boys vibes. The rest is much more rock.
The more this went the more I disliked it.
I was quite preoccupied with reading heroes of olympus (shrenas fault), so unfortunately I was unable to listen to this album
Desinteressante. Gostei de ''Torn Curtain''. 1,5
2/10
Boring. Nothing stood out to me.
Couldn't finish
No. Has the same problem as led zep of being just too rock for me but none of the charm of the incredible instrumentals. The vocals also were not up to my taste.
blech
I really don't need to listen to any more punk albums. Never having heard of Television I kind of appreciated their music, but the singing killed it for me.
Just irritating enough to jolt me out of lending a serious ear.
barely got through the first song, the f**k is that singing
wow i hate it. listening to this felt like torture, the vocals are a complete nightmare but hey, at least the instrumentals are good! also, the album cover is genuinely terrifying
Not for me
Another boring album
Didn’t get past 2 songs. Just couldn’t stand it.
Almost couldn’t take his voice. Good guitar riffs. I can see how they may have influenced later bands.
Just could not do it
Not for me. 1/5
didn’t listen thru the whole album but the vibe was just so oppressive. dislike that
Not for me
The french band Telephone is named after Television. Other than that, I have not enjoyed the listen.
Had to turn it off.
Gay
Oh I really hated the sound of the singers voice, like go touch grass or a girl or a man or an nb or something please
Wierd
Did not like this even a little bit. It sounds like music the worst punks you’ve ever met listen to.
1 stern
This sucked.
Trash
1.5 Stars, rounded down because there were no songs I genuinely enjoyed. Really would not sit down to listen to it again. It feels raw, but not in a look-how-anarchist-and-anti-stabilishment-we-are kind of way. It's like they're too polished to be punk but not polished enough to be technical, so they live in this weird place that I don't like. I felt like the ideas weren't landing. I can see how its ideas went on to influence other bands, but this album is not for me. See No Evil - I don't fuck with the vocalist's voice. Also the fact there are no embellishments and it's just the same riff playing over and over in all instruments makes the thing feel stiff and not raw. Lyrics are alright. Venus - Guitar work is better (the solo is underwhelming) but... this man's voice is just eh. Also, Americans pronounce Venus de Milo funny. Friction - The intro riff sounds like a beginner guitarist being told to improvise something but he's not very confident. Marquee Moon - The intro feels like a weirdly overlaid loop. Maybe repetition doesn't always legitimize lmao. There's something off about the whole song, I can't quite put a finger on why. I can't believe the whole song is ten minutes of the same 2 or 3 ideas. The solo felt underwhelming too. Elevation - Probably the best guitar work so far in the Album. Guiding Light - Good bassline. Probably the best song in the album thus far. Seems Prove it - The bass is so repetitive and mechanical. Really did not like any of it. Torn Curtain - The intro is so good! Really didn't feel like the rest of the album. The song feels fuller. The lyrics are good. I still dislike the vocalist's delivery and overall tone, but this is a song I'd enjoy as a cover by another band.
Last night I watched the Super Bowl halftime show which was absolutely incredible. Kendrick Lamar finished with tv off. He was trying to warn me but I didn’t listen.
1/6
That one guitar lick isn’t enough to carry this album, and the fact that you know which bit I’m talking about proves my point. Drivel!
Meh. Better than some of the other trash that has dropped lately, but not by much.
70’s
Nicht meine Richtung
Entirely forgettable. I have no memory of any of the songs
1/5. hate.
really annoying voice, couldn't get further than 4 songs before switching to something else.
1. evil - 1 2. venuz - 1 3. friction - 1 4. moon - 1.5 5. elevation - 1 6. light - 1.5 7. prove - 1 8. curtain - 1.5
Schreckliche Stimme, irgendwie quietschig. Immer nur paar Worte gesungen, dann wieder kurz Pause. Katzengejammer trifft es meiner Meinung nach am besten. Nein, muss echt nicht sein.
Pass
Did not like this album at all. Everything about it sounded amateurish, from the production and mixing to songs dragging on for no discernable reason. Very underwhelming and uninspired
Just not really my style. A lack of dynamism in lyrical quality and all kind of same-y.
Yuck
Just listen to the Talking Heads instead.
Old
Meh
Didn’t get past the first few songs.
Not sure what this is. Punk, rock, strange? Weird music from the late 70’s. Things that make you go huh?
Not my style of music
warbly nonsense
Never heard of these guys. When the guitar came in on the first song I was thinking, “oh this might be good…” then he started singing and I thought it sounded like thrift shop Mick Jagger. I was at 2 until the stupid guitar part at the 8:15 mark in Marquee Moon. And then Elevation and Guiding Light absolutely grinded for me. Sorry Television, don’t think you’re one I’ll explore further.
I didn't particularly like this album. Too much guitar for my taste. Lyrics weren't meaningful for me.
No tonality in the singing. Supposed to be a fabulous guitarist. Couldn’t prove it by me. Nothing about this made me want to hear more of them.
Langweilig
I don't like this sound. Whatever it is. 70s rock just might not be my thing.
Boring, poor vocals.
Not it, sound sold timey
Don't like the vocals. Guitar is good, but not the rock style I like.
Nope
Pre-80s punk/alt sound. Lead singer is a mix between David Burn and Mick Jaggar.
Boring and unimpressive, disliked the vocals. Torn Curtain was ok.
That was a hard listen, made more so by Tom Verlaine's voice (rest in peace) which grated on me. They may have come out of the Punk scene in NY, but the length and meter of the songs was anything but IMO.
meh
Another bland "classic/alt/psychedelic rock with a touch of country" albums to throw on the pile.
No thank you.
Uh
I do not feel this music has held up well, a type of music from the 70s that makes me want to forget that decade. Elements of punk, some nice guitar, angry vocals.
Uuhhhhh meh. Pretty bland album. Some of the instrumental work it’s kind of cool but besides that not much to remember from this. 2/10
Nope
Yawn I’m bored I’m tired I’m bored yawn
Yuck.
wasnt really my kinda thing
Vreselijke stem en de muziek is ook nauwelijks te harden. Paar nummers volgehouden, maar toen hield het ook op.
Prior to this I had only listened to the song marquee moon but after listening to the entire album I realized how much I had been missing out, this is a really good one!
Didn’t listen
