Nothin really stood out to me, but it’s not bad necessarily just n9t my vibe.

Ik weet niet.. Dit voelt als een album dat ik al een keer of 10 heb geluisterd? Er is niet zoveel dat er nu echt uitspringt. Wat me opvalt zijn de zware nadruk op gitaren en de lange nummers/solos. Die schelen wel, zorgen in elk geval voor wat interessants dat de aandacht er bij houdt, maar ik heb nu niet het idee van "Goh wat ben ik gelukkig dat ik dit album heb geluisterd" Het staat op de lijst, ik heb het geluisterd, vond 2 nummers interessant en mooi en ben nu weer toe aan een volgend album want ik ben nu de rest al weer vergeten. I put this on while cooking and I forgot it was on within 15 minutes, it just turned into rock white noise, it doesnt help when you have Marquee Moon, a 10 minute song that just kinda meanders around, but what shook me out of it was Elevation right after, because I thought it was Lovefool by The Cardigans, then got bummed when I realized I had several tracks left. Just not for me, their peers are better.

Maybe I was just in a bad mood today but I did not like this album. Just shitty long guitar solos that go nowhere, boring lyrics and boring vocals in general. Like a shittier Rolling Stones somehow

Ha! Once again another 1977 album, but this time… damn, I wouldn’t imagine I would ever get this disappointed with a release from that decade, seriously. I will give my 2 cents but in summary I mostly hated it. I don’t think I should rate this one as more than 1.5/5, but I since the the mix wasn’t bad and the instrumental is fairly ok (and mostly because I can only do whole starts for the rating here) I will give it 2 out of 5, reluctantly. Highlights (sort of): the main riff of `Marquee Moon`, even though I quickly grew tired of it once the song started repeating itself pretty early on (within the first couple of minutes, and the song is over 10 minutes long!). I also liked the instrumental section between 8:42 and 9:12. the “intention” of the track `Friction`, the vibe of the track `Torn Curtain`. Skippable: pretty much the entire album tbh The biggest complaint is with the vocals. Never heard of the band before and honestly might never hear again. 1. See No Evil - 3:52 song starts, I start feeling the vibe during the first 15 seconds and then the vocals come in, and holy crap, it totally ruined it for me. I tried keeping it together and let it play, waiting until things make some kind of sense again, but then some minutes later the album was over and I couldn’t stand any more of these vocals and desperately went to play anything else instead of giving Spotify the chance to randomly play anything else by them. oh, I forgot to talk about the song… yeah, unremarkable 2. Venus - 3:49 chord progression is better than the previous song, and the raw vintage drum sound matches nicely those guitar lines. bass sounds good and could be a bit louder. hated the vocals. also quite repetitive 3. Friction - 4:43 I recorded a few indie bands that write riffs like this one in particular, and I totally get the “DIY” nature and glimpse into what the band’s approach to making music looks like. that being said, I remember thinking about “trying not to be too harsh on the review” from this point forward (but spoiler alert: the empathy wears off after a few more tracks). So far, these are the “least bad” vocals of the album, but I had no hopes it would be any different from the previous tracks. 4. Marquee Moon - 10:38 I liked the push/pull motion of the riff, but only after the drums started playing and I realized I my counting was on the offbeat and the riff is actually syncopated. this is by far the most creative thing on the entire album and probably the only reason I decided to round the rating up instead of down. like I mentioned before on the highlights section, I grew tired of the repetitiveness and had to withstand several more minutes of this song. the only reward was the short interlude excerpt from 8:42 and 9:12, which was really cool. the improvised solo before it has a chaotic nature and it reminds a bit of the cool effect of “not-ocidental” music genres breaking barriers and influencing ocidental music in general. hated the vocals. 5. Elevation - 5:05 super repetitive riff and and I got tired of the chord progression rather quickly. I liked the lead guitar fills between the sections (specifically into pre-chorusses and also the stuff before and after the chorus). the vocals aren’t so terrible on this one, but I still don’t like this style. I get the idea, i just don’t like this kind of singing, thus my incessant complains regarding this topic throughout the whole record. 6. Guiding Light - 5:32 at around this point I remember feeling like I was already too numb to clearly make any judgement on what was going on, and I was kinda counting how long until the album finally ended. this one probably beats the opener on the unremarkable category. I must say the outro was the best part, it felt good to think it was almost over. 7. Prove It - 5:00 the band plays a look with rests and groovier riffs, more movement going on. the drum sound caught my attention once more and I compliment the recording and mixing of the drums on the record, because despite all the points made, the drums are very consistent and match the style very properly, if not to say they elevate the whole thing. the section between 2:45 and 3:16 was the best part of this track and I think the performance imperfections are what makes it work for me. hated the vocals, but I was much more used to it at this point that most of the album had already played. 8. Torn Curtain - 6:56 cool idea for the intro, another showcase to highlight how the drum sounds match the style perfectly. the riff idea for this one sounded fresh in comparison to rest of the album. the dramatic vibe was cool and is what makes the track work for me. I like the strange chords at the end and shifting melodies that seem to indicate key changes that doesn’t really happen. I head piano on some other track, but only on this one it was memorable enough for me to point it out. outro seemed too long, but it could be me anxiously waiting for the end so I could play anything else (preferably with good vocals).

Eh? I think I might be burning out a bit on this, because this sounds like a pretty normal album of the era. They try to be a bit Stonesy, a bit Queeny, a bit Bowie...y. The lyrics are all over the place, making me think that's why it's here. I listened to it again, and my opinion hasn't changed. It's fine. Just fine.

This album has cemented the idea in my head that a bad singer can completely ruin a good band. I've seen it before on this list but usually the bands behind the singer aren't this good. I can't give this anything higher than a 2, I just can't stand that singer.

This was kind of a worst of both world album for me. Not edgy or energetic enough for punk and not melodic enough for rock. Like a mismatch of the vocals to the band.

Contains many bridges to genres and understandably, it is culturally significant. But the singing is grating and except for the title track, it never grips. The solo work is technically impressive but the sound is ultimately dry and boring. Important but dated.

At least after this record, Spotify chose The Jesus & Mary Chain for me.

Overall, this is disappointing and pretentious. The music is fine to very good (a mix of the Stones, Velvet Underground, and post-punk), but the vocals sound like a slightly more masculine Patti Smith... Highlights: "Venus" (Velvet Underground-ish), "Friction" (guitar has like a spaghetti western sound), "Guiding Light" (Stonesy ballad, but feels a bit long)

Like, this is forgettable.

This is one of those where it's super clear that this was hugely influential on a lot of the musicians that I adore and, it's likely that I would've been into them had I been a certain age in 1977. But at this point, it's just too far from my taste to be something I'd listen to.

This guys voice grated on me so bad. I was also really bored waiting for this to end 2 ⭐️

I know the name, heard they were influential but have only listened to a track or two over the years. Based on vocal prowess I understand why they never went mainstream, but worse singers are household names. His style is not smooth or catchy, the production is average and the mix is off I'd say. I don't hear anything I'd ever want to listen to a second time. "Prove It" is the only gem on the album. The title track is the only other decent song but again, the mix is so indie band and bland with a half decent solo thrown in. It goes for nearly 11 minutes though, complete overkill. They'd have been better served to have 12 shorter songs vs 8 long songs. Not a Top 1001 album, not even close in my book.

A list of complaints about this album: Pretentious and lacking punch. And by that I mean that I fail to find any real energy or enthusiasm. Perhaps purposely droll, so cool we can't be bothered? Tom Verlaine is not a good singer. Not even in the Neil Young/Bob Dylan/Tom Petty way where the lack of vocal chops is secondary to the soul and lyricism. Just plain unpleasant. Proving once again that you can't just call something "punk" if it sounds weird and amateurish. I'm (again and not for the last time, I'm sure) missing something as this album is in the pantheon of American post-punk, Critically Acclaimed™, but I didn't like it. It has moments, but those moments require SO MUCH EFFORT on the listener's part. Maybe you had to be there? I get what they're trying to do, which is set themselves above the rest of the downtown art-rock scene in 1977. Who rejects an invitation to be produced by Eno? Tom Verlaine thought he could do better himself. Incredible. Hard to listen to some of these albums in an intellectual clean room due to their reputation. Part of an insular scene that was too cool for anyone except those in it. I don't think they were trying to be popular or appeal to an audience outside the scene. Certainly they wouldn't care what I thought.

Spent the whole time listening to this thinking they sounded like someone else but never figuring it out. Fairly forgettable for me I'm afraid

This was fairly unremarkable. I didn’t hate it, but I really didn’t like it either. “Marquee Moon,” despite its length, and “Guiding Light” were my favorite songs, but overall this just didn’t grab me.

2 Star. Forgettable and deceptively long. It’s only 45 minutes, but there are also only 8 songs. So each song is almost 6 minutes long. Would like to know what sets this apart because I don’t know the context!

Elevation is a terrible song. One of the worst on this list that isn’t made by a German junkyard instrument band. Most of the rest of the album is pretty pleasant just not very memorable. Sitting at a two and a half bit Elevation is bad enough to round down.

There's nothing really wrong with this album, but it does commit the biggest sin for me. It's boring. I would recommend someone listens to Kollaps by Einstürzende Neubauten over this. With Kollaps, you can at least trauma bond with someone who's also listened to it. With Marquee Moon, you can say "yeah, I've heard it" and move on.

Proto-punk It not yet had the energy of later punk, but also you could hear the themes that will become so prominent later.

Best Song: Marquee Moon. An actually engaging, sprawling rock track. I like that it didn't just waffle off into the ether, but actually came back to the original groove to close itself off satisfactorily. Worst Song: Torn Curtain. We didn't need another 7 minute, meandering track to close out the album. It already felt like a long 45 minutes. Overall: Certainly okay. Undoubtedly alright. Definitively existent. Nothing particularly exciting about it, nor is there anything offensive. I will forget about this one quickly.

too much prog rock for me

Look, I really want to like this one, I've tried for years to really dig in and listen. But every time, I don't care for the lyrics, singer's voice and the music is mostly at funeral dirge pace. If anything it does feel like I'd imagine the scene in the late 70's around the Bowery NYC area. It's like the punk rock version of prog rock and I just can't accept it. Critics and musicians says it's amazing, but I just don't f'n hear it. I've tried - this probably my 10th listen at this point. Some of them just don't click.

While I can appreciate the impact this album allegedly had on rock, I just didn't have much of a good time listening to it. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

Marquee Moon is alright, another one of those albums on this list that isn't bad, isn't notably good, it just is. None of the tracks do enough to separate themselves from each other except the title track, which only does so because it's more than 10 minutes in length and entirely unnecessarily so, which means I'm giving it a 2 rather than a 3. Guiding Light the best track on the record.

Pretty cool. Feel like a broken record explaining why 70's rock is not really my thing. The Doors were clearly much better, mostly because of the additional richness of the organ. This is just passable.

Just another alternative 70’s rock album…. Het begint nu wel een beetje eentonig te worden denk ik. Ik moet zeggen dat ik dit album ook niet mega goed vond, betrapte mezelf er op dat ik me er echt toe moest zetten om hem af te luisteren om niet al naar andere muziek te gaan luisteren

Ugh I hated the singer’s voice. Liked the guitars but I was waiting for the album to end.

Song were too long the actual music wasn't bad besides the length and sometimes abstract riffing that was done, it could have been seen as enjoyable. ...And then there was the singing. It sounded like a balloon deflating.

The guitar solo was great but the lyrics and verses felt so chaotic and messy, and not in a good way. There were some good songs like See no evil and friction that I could listen to again but a weak album overall.

I’m not too positive on this one. I can’t really say anything bad about it, but there isn’t much good either. See No Evil and Friction were the only songs that actually had me interested in listening. The only other note I had while listening to this was that Elevation had a *very* familiar sound to it, but it was something I absolutely could not place. Everything else was just nothing special to my ears. I wish I had more to say, I really do. Marquee Moon is definitely one of the albums of all time.

2.5 Man, I really, really wanted to like this album. A band involved in the late 70’s CBGB scene that would go on to influence a number of artists that shaped alternative rock, including Joy Division, Pixies, R.E.M., and Sonic Youth? What a resume, one that seems like it would be an immediate sell to me on paper, but I just don’t hear any of that here. The album starts strong enough with See No Evil and has another high point in the title track, but everything else here is so boring. I don’t hear the punk influence, and I don’t hear the bands listed above or anything like them, instead I’m just hearing a style of artsy funk rock similar to The Talking Heads - a group I’ve historically not been the kindest on. Contextually, yes, I can see how this album could be considered monumental - it really doesn’t sound like any style of rock that had come before it, but that doesn’t make it any more enjoyable to me. Just because you did it first doesn’t necessarily mean you did it the best, and in this case I would rather just listen to the bands these guys influenced. I have no idea what they saw in this album that I didn’t (and I listened to this three times looking for it), but at least it resulted in much better music.

After the first two tracks, I was in a good place with this. Then track 3 is a 10 and a half minute version of track one? Bumbump bumbump for ten minutes. After already hearing it before?

First and foremost, I didn't enjoy the whiny vocals. And maybe not so much the repetitive rest of it. It just isn't my thing.

Marquee moon is a banger, I also think I recognize it from Tom playing it. That guitar melody was like deep in my subconscious. The rest of the album though….underwhelming. I understand WHY this album is here. But I can’t enjoy an album just off merit alone. I need something sonically interesting to hold onto and where this album stands right now, it is not doing that for me. Im bummed bc this album is super talked about in corners of the internet and i was expecting to see why… I think part of my rating can also be attributed to the kind of day I had when I listened, not much I can do about that. I am only a man.

I wish more songs on this album sounded like that final song - something like gothic Talking Heads. The rest of the album is very generic punky new wave. Not bad, but there's so many better albums in that genre.

The album is mainly rock but has elements of punk but there hints of '50s music. It is about 45 minutes long was some unnecessarily long songs -one 10 and one 7 minutes. I was not familiar with the band. The album is better than a 2 and really a 3. I will round down.

mmm i don’t know. i really debated between a 2 and 3. his voice just really threw me off it was so whiny and honestly ruined the album. the music was not too bad, but there was some repetition to it that didn’t make up for his voice.

Talented band let down by awful vocals

Never heard of these guys before. Wish I had discovered back in late 70s'; definitely feel like leading-edge punk. Maybe ever a bit more refined than some of the Ramone's style music. "Friction" is catchy. Title track "Marquee Moon" did not do much for me until half way through, then it turned the corner and made for quite an enjoyable journey. Favorite song was the last - "Torn Curtain". Still, all in all, not much here.

Great guitar and bass for sure but i never really found myself super into the music, even after two listens through. Think I just hated the singer’s voice. Best Track: Was going to say Marquee Moon, but after listening through it again i found it kind of grating. Idk

A semi unique voice (like a more punk mick jagger) with basic sound. Not a fan nor do I think this should be on this list. Only cool thing is a “punk” band in the US in 1977

Look, I'm sure they spent a lot on guitar lessons and their mums were really proud they had an album. It's 10-odd songs that are in the same tempo, same key, same vibe, same sound, same lack of effects on the instruments. It's just uninspiring, uninteresting. It sounds like something I wrote in subelius when I was in year 10. 1977 album, already showing the limitations of rock and roll. I could go on. 2 stars

all of the internet algorithms really want me to listen to this album. i see it all the time. so this is the second time i've listened to it, and more than likely the last. the more i get subjected to the 70s in this list the more my prejudices against anything produced in that era are going up. it seems like anything good produced in that decade was made in spite of the 70s not because of them.

It's not bad, some pretty energetic cool rock and blues. The singer has a good voice, but the overly expressive way he sings is a quite jarring, and sometimes sounds bad but almost on purpose. I do kind of like him singing like that coz it gives this music more of an edge compared to The Doors. Good bits but not especially memorable.

Listened to 01.14.21 The title track was the only one that I really liked. It has a Strokes feel. Almost as if the album/sound was a decade or two ahead of it's time. I feel like if it came out in the late 90's or early 00's it would have been a big success.

Minimalist, dry, and intensely self-contained, with long guitar passages that value precision over drama. While its influence is undeniable, the album can feel emotionally distant and resistant to engagement. Its restraint reads more as limitation than discipline here.

Okay. First song gives me beach boys vibes. The rest is much more rock.

1.5 Stars, rounded down because there were no songs I genuinely enjoyed. Really would not sit down to listen to it again. It feels raw, but not in a look-how-anarchist-and-anti-stabilishment-we-are kind of way. It's like they're too polished to be punk but not polished enough to be technical, so they live in this weird place that I don't like. I felt like the ideas weren't landing. I can see how its ideas went on to influence other bands, but this album is not for me. See No Evil - I don't fuck with the vocalist's voice. Also the fact there are no embellishments and it's just the same riff playing over and over in all instruments makes the thing feel stiff and not raw. Lyrics are alright. Venus - Guitar work is better (the solo is underwhelming) but... this man's voice is just eh. Also, Americans pronounce Venus de Milo funny. Friction - The intro riff sounds like a beginner guitarist being told to improvise something but he's not very confident. Marquee Moon - The intro feels like a weirdly overlaid loop. Maybe repetition doesn't always legitimize lmao. There's something off about the whole song, I can't quite put a finger on why. I can't believe the whole song is ten minutes of the same 2 or 3 ideas. The solo felt underwhelming too. Elevation - Probably the best guitar work so far in the Album. Guiding Light - Good bassline. Probably the best song in the album thus far. Seems Prove it - The bass is so repetitive and mechanical. Really did not like any of it. Torn Curtain - The intro is so good! Really didn't feel like the rest of the album. The song feels fuller. The lyrics are good. I still dislike the vocalist's delivery and overall tone, but this is a song I'd enjoy as a cover by another band.

Last night I watched the Super Bowl halftime show which was absolutely incredible. Kendrick Lamar finished with tv off. He was trying to warn me but I didn’t listen.
