Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Found this band after reading comparisons to the strokes back in HS. I don't recall ever connecting with them. On a relisten, these songs are fine, but nothing jumps out to play again.

Not something I would listen to usually, but it makes me imagine my father smoking pot in the 70s. Wikipedia Link to album: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquee_Moon

MARQUEE MOON Y A CORRER

Mezcla indi y punk. No está mal del todo. Algunas melodías interesantes.

can't tell if I liked it or not added to my library

A little too jammy but well done

was never really into them back in the day, though i knew they were around. one track stood out, the rest were interesting enough, but didn't really grab me.

This one was alright to listen to. Honestly, I didn’t find it particularly memorable, but I didn’t find it annoying, either. It was pretty decent.

not bad. interesting mix of jazz, folk, and psychadelic rock. last song is particularly good

Muy sólido ese Álbum. La verdad si aguanta.

Goed punk/rock albumpje. Je hoort dat veel bands hierdoor geïnspireerd zijn.

Bowie-esque rock that is a little easier for the ears. Really enjoyed the track Elevation that apparently wasn't among the most liked from the Album on Spotify.

I only sort of listened to it. Feels like a precursor to more fleshed out punk. Can’t really give an honest opinion

post-punk rock. nyc cult band

Fun, punk — didn’t finish but added a few good songs

Started strong but got worse as it went on. I can see why there is some appeal, but this isn't something I'll listen to again.

pretty cool at points. was ready for it to end though

This one was just ok

solid and interesting sound but nothing very memorable

decent classic rock record

Marquee Moon: By Television - See No Evil: not a bad song to vibe to, love the beginning. the guitar is e v e r y t h i n g. it gets kinda boring and repetitive... bridge is CRAZY. - Venus: dad vibes. definitely. i would vibe to this while cooking/ baking in the kitchen. - Friction: damn. aggressive ✋🏼😅. its funny hahaha. PLS GUITAR GUITAR WOAAAAAAAH. - Marquee Moon: 10 mins, couldn’t make it to the 3rd minute. no. - Elevation: weird... i feel like it could be part of gossip girls sound track, like when blair and chuck end up in a fight and blair is walking on the streets. same vibe. - Guiding Light: probably my grandparents first dance song. weird in a nice way? gets intense 😳 guitar is so smooooooooooth - Prove it: STARETED OFF REALLLLY WELL, the chorus was disappointing 😢 THE WHISTLE ANKDKSIDISHSJF ADORABLE! RIFF! YUP! YUP! - Torn Curtain: not my vibe. no...

Punky, chill background music, 70%

That one song, sure. The rest was meh

Very average, a bit boring

Own. Fave Song 'See No Evil' 3.75

Ok album. Worth a future re-listen but not an everyday spin.

fun, not something I'd listen to again (too punky, but they performed better than some of the post-punk, I like)

this is pretty cool, shoegazey garagey rock but weirdly upbeat? i don't think the term shoegaze was around in 1977 but hey. weird that i'd never heard of this band before.

Not bad, nothing super memorable.

Funky, if was on wouldn't mind but not my style

It was decent but sounded so much like the band before that I had trouble differentiating.

I wouldn't say this is universally bad. But it sure is not good to my ears.

Boring. But loved the titular song

Don't love the voice, but I love the musicality of guitars & percussion. Quandry how to grade this one.

This could have been good if the vocals weren't so painful to listen to.

Fairly forgettable. May even forget about it by the end of the day.

Good music to make breakfast to. Beatles vibes. I liked marquee moon- didn’t feel like a 10min listen

This was just okay, sort of forgettable.

Não curti muito Estava em Toronto na conexão Junho/2026 Não bateu com o momento

Album started of sounding fresh, at the end I was a little bit oversaturated with the sound tho.

Rolling Stones at home:

Mom says we have Talking Heads at home.

Kind of strange and Stones like but different.

This is an alright album, not too bad. It was pretty nice leaving it in the background.

yea its cool i guess i like see no evil it just works but yk not my taste like that

An album that may have had more of an influence on me if listened to during the time it was released. The guitar throughout stole the show but couldn’t get over the shrill voice of the lead singer, just personal opinion. Overall, the title track was probably the best but nothing really stood out to me. Two stars

Ña, es escuchable pero muy mid

Starts well enough but descends all too often into 6th form band tedium.

Not bad, but not good either. No stand out tracks.

Alright I guess

ok i guess

dont like it.

meh. I don't really see the point

Television kuuntelu ei ollut mun juttu.

No es el tipo de rock que me gusta, tiene un par de temas buenos

By the time I thought “hey, this album is getting good,” Spotify had changed to something else. Nothing really bad here but nothing memorable at all to me.

Made for some good background music while I was doing some chores, but I didn’t have a moment where I needed to pay closer attention to what was going on.

Mediocre as fuck

Сара 1,5 Марко 3,5

Vocalist sounds too much like the guy from The Strokes for my liking, but the music was not bad. Very 70's jam-rock.

If Pink Floyd and Talking Heads had a baby

No standouts

chato pra caralho pqp

Not for me — too one note and I didn’t like the main vocals.

White boys with guitars.

Basic rock. Mid vocals and instrumentals.

2/5 guiding light

I can hear how these guys have influenced things I've listened to, but it just doesn't grab me.

yok benlik degil

I heard of Television but hadn’t heard any of their music. Nothing special.

Super repetitive. If you like Long guitar solos that are two notes with pedals? This is for you

didn't like it

It was alright. Not my thing

Another pretty awful album. I did manage to soldier on and listen to the whole thing without any skips so plus 1 for that, but I would never ever willingly load this album up for a listen.

166/1001 First listen. Music is good. Vocals are bad. 4/10

Number: 76 Date: 03/19/2026 Artist: Television Album: Marquee Moon Year: 1977 Genre: New Wave Punk Rock Rating: 2 Notes: Before: I never was a huge fan of Television. They're OK but there's nothing really unique or special about their sound, imo. I do have one song from this album on my favorites of 1977 list, Marquee Moon, ranked 66 out of 100 for 1977. During: So 2 songs in now and I find them a little annoying, maybe it's Tom Verlaine's voice and delivery style that rubs me the wrong way. The music itself is decent. Now at number 4, Marquee Moon. The main reason it's on my best of '77 list is it's because it's by Television and I felt like I had to include at least one song of theirs. It starts off pretty good but is quite long. I think it's going to get a demotion. 2 See No Evil 2 Venus 2 Friction 3 Marquee Moon 2 Elevation 2 Guiding Light 2 Prove It 2 Torn Curtain ----------------------------------------------------- 2.125 AVERAGE 2.22 WEIGHTED AVERAGE (accounts for song lengths) After: I don't really like it at all. I liked their music a little more back in the early 80's but it hasn't aged well, imo. Still I get that they were very influential and should be included in this list. 2 my personal rating 5 suitability for this list 4 relevance ----------------------------------------------- 3.7 composite rating

Aika tommone bland albumi.

It was alright. Standout Track: See No Evil

I have heard of Television, but I don’t know any of their songs. This was fine. The songs were really long though.

Det var en låt som höjde från 1 till 2 men det var knappt. Det lät som en ai version av talking heads

Agree with review that the songs are more complex than the other music coming out in the mid-1970s. Can hear elements of alternative music in the songs which is a step in that direction, but on the early edge of things. Not a huge fan, but I recognize it was likely very different when it came out.

The guitar slays the house down boots but the lead singer is so off putting to me I can’t get fully on board

Instrumentals provide a pretty classic rock vibe. Vocals left a lot to be desired.

So generic. 2

not my vibes really like i liked the instrumentals and everything but the vocals werent my type the songs i liked were marquee moon itself. NEVER MIND THE SONG IS FUCKING 10 MINUTES LONG HOLY SHIT I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE I JUST THOUGHT I WENT TO THE NEW SONG MY DAYS. yeahh sorry this albums a chop for me not vibing with it but guiding light is good.

Hard pass here. It wasn't so bad I had to turn it off but I spent the whole time feeling it was long and wishing it was over.

Vocals too whiny. Songs were fine but forgettable

I would have rated this album higher if they had a better singer. I really didn’t like his voice. The songs were pretty good.

Decent 2. This wasn’t my fave. The lead singer’s voice REALLY bothered me. It made it unlistenable. The instrumentation was great , but there are a lot of other punk bands I like more.

Again just something I would pick up

It wasn’t even bad, just was not exciting to me.

No thank you. Two!

дрисня

i guess this was so influential that it sounds to me nothing special at all

Not really my speed

Raw, unbalanced. Not for me

bouais

I can see what the album influenced but it was very meh for me.

No my cuppa

The whole album kind just went by without me noticing. Not bad at all, but it didn't catch my interest.

Not sure what to say. Odd vocals.

A bit uninspiring ⭐️⭐️

Just OK

English punk is just not my thing

It felt like early post punk rock music. It has a pioneering aspect to it's sound. Musical history relevance more so than a great listen, for me.

I do believe it's a good album, but it just doesn't sit right with me at the moment. Maybe I will come back to it someday, but for now it just feels like it went in one ear and out it other.

Its pretty easy to hear how this was influential to the punk, post punk and new wave scene. One can hear how artists used this as a catalyst to create an evolution of what was laid in the groundworks here. That being said the vocals make me want to punch someone. This is the type of music that critics and writers gargle all the way to the pubes while most people just think they are Ok. I am neither a critic or a writer, other than the vocals this is OK.

An unremarkable album that is neither bad nor is it terribly good. It simply just is & leaves no lasting impression.

I had never heard of this group prior to this. It’s a decent album…..not fantastic but not horrible. Also not that memorable.

Didn't really stand out to me, just an average group from back in the day. Liked the music tho.

I don’t have anything to say about this album, honestly. It’s not bad, it did not really register in my memory. 2.5/5

Boring AF, sounded like a less talented wannabe version of The Rolling Stones.

Very mediocre, I don’t really have too much to say about this one but it’s only because this one doesn’t deserve much said about it. Not my style, and hate the singers voice. Some good guitar tracks though.

Sounds like bland and talentless talking heads to me. Yipee.

This one didn’t really grab me. Torn Curtain as the closer was the only track that properly stood out, and sort of gave me a The Eagles vibe. Going back to a few tracks, there are some nice riffs here and there, but overall it just never clicked for me. The track lengths didn’t help either. Not necessarily a bad album, just not my thing.

not my vibe but good instrumental

you complain of my DIC-tion !! everything else was mid

Fav song: See no evil Least Fav song: Friction, Marquee Moon overall ranking: 1.81/5 (rounded up to 2/5) The instrumentals, guitarist and the drums are super good however the lyrics don’t stand out that much and sort of, in a way, ruin the songs for me, personally and I feel like the vocalist doesn’t match the music at all and is so out of place but idk. The vocalist voice sounds the same in ALL of these goddamn songs </3 Had the vocals been better, I fear I would have enjoyed this much more. Though I do appreciate the fact that their songs are long!! You don’t get anymore (but I did not appreciate it in Marquee Moon). Individual song ranking: See no evil - ‘And its a whole lot more than “anyhow”, get it?” - I love the instrumentals in this song🙏🙏 3/5 Venus - “We fell (did you feel low?) Nah (huh?) 2/5 Friction - I had high hopes for this song but its lacking 1/5 Marquee Moon - “A kiss of death, the embrace of life.” - I was going to give it a 2/5 but the 5 minute long instrumental section did not need to be that long. In no world what so ever did it need to be so long it could have been 5 mins max like what the flip. Like yes it was good but five minutes..!! 1/5 Elevation - “Don’t go to my head - I like the vocals/the lyrics but it DOESNT MATCH THE MUSIC 😣 sigh 2/5 guiding light - “Never the rose without the prick” - The potential this song had </3 2/5 prove it - I’m loving the guitar and drums in the background but none of the lyrics stand out 2.5/5 - Torn curtain The instrumental intro is amazing but the VOCALS DONT MATCH I feel so overwhelmed idk what’s going on in the song 1/5

Never heard them before. I expected classic rock, however what I got in the end is kind of different. I don't like the singing, I think it sounds too squeaky. It simply doesn't sound skillfull nor good to the ears. Other then in Marque Moon the Instrumental music is not really pleasing either. I just feel like I would rather listen to the other classic 70s rock albums. I'll give it a 4/10!

2 Stars - This seems to be an aquirred taste as i cannot get into this album - when i find myself enjoy myself i am then quickly interrupted by the overly quirky and whiny singing, which is my main gripe throughout. The one saving grace is the occasionally very good guitar. Favourite Track - "Torn Curtain" 3.5/5 Least - "Venus" 1.5/5

The album cover scares me. A ten minute song was a jump scare to me. The songs simply aren’t that good for them to be 4+ minutes. I get very bored after awhile.

Definitely not my style

Tried many times to get into it. And pretty much anytime the singer is not singing I totally dig it. You can hear shades of Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Blondie, etc. But that singing voice. Bruh.

Yes, very annoying, but also, not that bad at the same time. Our melodic frontman Tom died at the ripe old age of 73 in 2023 4.5/10

never heard of them but another 70s album of course -idk about this sound -see no evil is eh -venus as well -friction too more nothingburger -lowkey all nothingburger not my vibe too repetitive sonically

Amazing guitar riffs on this album. This feels like the predecessor to the jam bands of today. However, the lead vocalist is bad. So so so bad. I can't even bring myself to give it a 3 because of how much I hate listening to his vocal inflections. Damn shame too, I really wanted to like this one.

Mediocre. Not great. Not horrible, but not very good.

Mid-generic brit pop rock. kinda just frustrated me LMAO

Jotenkin tästä tuli semmonen lama-ajan rollarit mieleen. Samaa paskaa mutta haisevammin. Ei jatkoon

Soitanta on ihan OK, mutta niin vammasta laulua, että kakkoseks vääntyy.

okay why am i scared. def can hear a lil abowie vibe here and there. i would say this was a rough start not bad but no thaat good really liked the instrumental part but man what a voice i kinda hate it like why are you almost moaning dude, didnt finish it cause of that prob a 5.3'/10

Pretty boring, not really going anywhere. I guess there are many better albums like it and lots of better albums in other genres as well. 2/5

Barely bareable. Glad when it was over

Fairly generic rock and roll.

Marquee Moon has some nice guitarwork in it, but the rest of the song makes it so that I don't really feel the need to keep it. It's generic dull rock. Who cares? 2/5 stars.

You can hear how influential this album has been, especially since it was released 1977. I just don't like tom verlaine voice.

Didn't stand out to me.

first of all why are they standing there like my sleep paralysis demons? the guys on the far left and far right would be great for some analog horror series on yt looking at them, i feel like my soul is being searched, my deepest darkest fears unearthed; the cover is the only thing that actually evokes any kind of emotion in me, the songs not so much

Mitä helvettiä

not a fan, not bad, but not for me

Ugh this had some fun tunes but even after a few relistens this did nothing to keep my attention

Didn’t particularly like this. The music was good, but most of the lyrics were pretty depressing.

Nah, ordinary at best. Not an all time great album.

Straight up meh

very boring album super slow has only 1 good song tbh

It's alright. I wouldn't listen again

Not bad bet this inspired a lot of bands I like

It was ok. It didn’t really speak to me. I could their influence of and on bands

It was fine but nothing is put on.

Nothing about this album stands out or makes me want to listen again. It feels like it might be music that later bands are influenced by since it sounds more modern than 1977. I would rather listen to those bands in that case.

Bit shit

Ikke for meg

I went in optimistic based on the wiki summary, late 1970s NYC punk is right up my alley. I was initially not disappointed, but it fell off quite a bit as I listened. Half is very good, a mix of punk and new wave, essentially punk with melody. See no Evil, Friction, Prove It, and Marquee Moon are the standouts here, each different and interesting. The rest of the album isn't for me. It feels like an uninspired jam band with players not quite skilled enough to be in a jam band in the first place. Which is a bummer, I enjoyed the good songs. Bit of a downer to have long boring songs drag down the experience. I wish they allowed half stars, this would be a 2.5, but the good songs weren't good enough to carry the album so need to go with 2.

2.2 so boring

This is boring as hell tbh.

Nice guitar riffs but the genre is not for me

I know Television came before Talking Heads, but I still can't listen to this without thinking that it's a less interesting version of Talking Heads 77. Never got the appeal outside of "See No Evil", and I doubt I ever will.

Fine. Not for me.

Klingt irgendwie alles gleich und nervt. Wieso ist der eine Song auch noch zehn Minuten lang?

It's not my sort of stuff, though it was done well for what it was. I'm sure Mr. L. Will probably give it a 4 or 5, bit it's just a 2 from me.

I know I’m supposed to like this, but at the end of the day it left me cold. “Guiding Light” was an exception.

Good post punk band, but this isn’t their best

Television, ça devait être bon dans les années 70 mais ça a mal vieilli, la voix du chanteur est grinçante. Je donne 2 étoiles grâce à Marquee Moon mais j'aurais pu me passer des autres chansons.

Forgettable but some great Guitar Moments.

By my type

See no evil, friction and Elevation are all very catchy and thread the line of lax to authentic vocals well. Good tracks that I’d listen to again. The others though? Yeah the lazy vocal delivery just isn’t my thing.

Ge kunt de jaren 70 in het album horen, of dat goed of slecht is kan ik u niet zeggen

Nope. Way way down the list.

Not geeat

Pedestrian and not remarkable.

Bright and I can tell why that would be hugely influential at the time, not timeless in my opinion. Guitar centric melody. Not one I will listen to much more of but good for what it was 2.5/5

Nothing really jumped at me, one song played and i recognised it and thought “ooh i know this song” yet here I am I can’t even tell you what song it was. It’s not a bad album, but it was really just fine

We are on a streak of straight ass albums.

Don’t really get the hype. Some funky instrumentals but annoying vocals. I feel like the 70s was full of cool beats and singers who couldn’t hold a tune.

Irritating voice, lyrics. Long, boring songs

Very non-remarkable to me

I’ve put my work in with this album, and I simply don’t like it. It exists, and that’s all. It epitomizes critical hyperbole elevating an album to darling status and telling you that this is “cool” when the product is merely ok. The moral of any story in art and music is that if you like/dislike something, don’t ever let a critic tell you otherwise because the ONLY opinion that matters is yours.

There's some interesting instrumentation and soundscape choices that I wasn't expecting. The sound has a punch that I really like, but the vocals are a bit grating. Maybe like someone doing a really exaggerated Mick Jagger impression. I do really like the music though. really fun, unique song writing.

I don't care for this at all.

Fun, classic sound. Vocals sound halfway between Talking Heads and Violent Femmes. Overall enjoyed, a little disposable for my tastes. Good album though.

in one word : tasteless. An album with no interest whatsoever, not that it's bad, but there's absolutely nothing special or memorable about it.

Not without interest and maybe influential, but not as obviously influential as some other bands from that era. Solid guitar work, no real duds, but nothing that truly stands out either. Kind of a letdown after everything I’d read about them because, to my ears, the Stooges in 69 and a bunch of other artists from the earlier New York punk/rock scene just sounded better.

just not a genre for me

With Steve Buscemi leading from the front, this melodic, punky number was not a horrible listen at all. Marquee Moon was the Gem for me - still sounds modern now. Someone else commented your favourite band's favourite band. I can see that.

Some nice guitar, but I did not manage to get into it

I don't know if I get this album in any sense of the word. It just sounds whiny and generic, but I have to assume that it is good and has a place in this project. I just can't understand why that might be the case.

Not really my thing, tried to like it a couple of times but couldn’t.

Marquee Moon gets tossed around as a punk album, but I’m just not seeing it. “See No Evil” has a bit of that punk edge, and maybe “Torn Curtain” leans in that direction, but overall? This feels way more like early indie rock than anything close to the raw energy of real punk and I’ve made it clear in earlier reviews how I feel about indie rock. (Spoiler: not a fan.) Television may have influenced some legit punk bands down the line, but this album itself doesn’t scratch that itch. It’s clean, drawn-out, and a little too polished for what I expect from punk. Points for influence, I guess, but this just wasn’t for me.

It was good but I wasn’t wowed.

Not really important

Wasnt able to get into the voice

Once again, I am amazed at the many groups that I haven’t heard of! I was 15 when this came out and I’m sure I would have liked it. Never introduced to it though. The style is a little dated now though.

Not my kind of music

no comment

Never heard on TV until today. Bit of teen angst, indie 70s rock with a whiney twist. Listenable, Friction is most creative (and best song.) Marquee Moon is also good, but runs too long. L = (2.0*s) garage sound similar to the Nervous Eaters. J = (2.4*s) thought the lead singer should have changed his name to Marky Moon…

Hmmm. Kind of 70’s, singing that sounds like talking, maybe British and out of tune? Ok guitar, average balance of band

This album ended up annoying me, but had some bright moments in spots.

Fine, forgettable. See No Evil was my favourite track.

Did not get into it. One or to cool songs though

The lead singer's voice is quite unpleasant. I couldn't fully enjoy it, even though the instrumentals were good.

Pretty lame tbh

very 80's type wail - almost hazel o'connor

me gusta las vocals y las guitarras pero que cada tema dure 5 minutos me pone de muy mal humor zzz

Mostly fine but ultimately not for me.

This was ok. I didn’t finish it

There some cool shit going on the with the guitar, but for the vast majority of this album it's the most annoying post punk voice you've ever heard wailing on and on and on. It's just so repetitive.

Eh, honestly eh is all I have to say. Music is good but so similar to so many other artists of that era. Didn't stand out to me. 4.6/10

Very dissonant. The final track sounds like a bad Pink Floyd song.

Started out alright, but it didn't catch my attention

I can’t imagine myself ever listening to this again

The album was just okay. None of the songs really stood out to me, and they all kind of just sounded like knock off Rolling Stones. I didn’t hate it, but there’s better music with the same sound. 4/10

Not really my cup of tea, a little bit stranglers-ish but nothing catches

5/10 A classic I’m sure, but didn’t massively do it for me. Punk-ish but more poppy art rock for me. 3 days later I can hardly remember anything to say something about it, not a great sign Best: Friction

Lots of reviews here about the excellence of this album, but I didn’t hear it. Some of the guitar work was pretty cool, but in the way that Moon Mist ice cream is so different but it’s also not ge me. There’s lots of 70s NYC rock that lights me up far more than this.

This was just an average album and I'm not entirely sure why it's included here. Vocals were weak and sound like a budget Mick Jagger. I did like the long guitar solo on Marquee Moon though. 4/10 (2/5)

Some nice bits but overall forgettable

point9.

Not a bad album, but it's so lackluster when I just listened to New York Dolls' self-titled debut. Television was a few years later and not as good. Vocals were meh. I enjoy that punk-y rock/new wave sound, but. I was just bored.

Rock, 1977 -> 2

Nothing special.

I'd never heard of this band before. The music was cool sounding, but I just could not get into his voice.

Nothing rock. Not bad, just bland.

It was ok

Nothin really stood out to me, but it’s not bad necessarily just n9t my vibe.

FAVO: Marquee Moon, Torn curtain

Ei mitään, mitä haluaisi kuunnella uudelleen koskaan ikinä.

I put this on while cooking and I forgot it was on within 15 minutes, it just turned into rock white noise, it doesnt help when you have Marquee Moon, a 10 minute song that just kinda meanders around, but what shook me out of it was Elevation right after, because I thought it was Lovefool by The Cardigans, then got bummed when I realized I had several tracks left. Just not for me, their peers are better.

Maybe I was just in a bad mood today but I did not like this album. Just shitty long guitar solos that go nowhere, boring lyrics and boring vocals in general. Like a shittier Rolling Stones somehow

Ha! Once again another 1977 album, but this time… damn, I wouldn’t imagine I would ever get this disappointed with a release from that decade, seriously. I will give my 2 cents but in summary I mostly hated it. I don’t think I should rate this one as more than 1.5/5, but I since the the mix wasn’t bad and the instrumental is fairly ok (and mostly because I can only do whole starts for the rating here) I will give it 2 out of 5, reluctantly. Highlights (sort of): the main riff of `Marquee Moon`, even though I quickly grew tired of it once the song started repeating itself pretty early on (within the first couple of minutes, and the song is over 10 minutes long!). I also liked the instrumental section between 8:42 and 9:12. the “intention” of the track `Friction`, the vibe of the track `Torn Curtain`. Skippable: pretty much the entire album tbh The biggest complaint is with the vocals. Never heard of the band before and honestly might never hear again. 1. See No Evil - 3:52 song starts, I start feeling the vibe during the first 15 seconds and then the vocals come in, and holy crap, it totally ruined it for me. I tried keeping it together and let it play, waiting until things make some kind of sense again, but then some minutes later the album was over and I couldn’t stand any more of these vocals and desperately went to play anything else instead of giving Spotify the chance to randomly play anything else by them. oh, I forgot to talk about the song… yeah, unremarkable 2. Venus - 3:49 chord progression is better than the previous song, and the raw vintage drum sound matches nicely those guitar lines. bass sounds good and could be a bit louder. hated the vocals. also quite repetitive 3. Friction - 4:43 I recorded a few indie bands that write riffs like this one in particular, and I totally get the “DIY” nature and glimpse into what the band’s approach to making music looks like. that being said, I remember thinking about “trying not to be too harsh on the review” from this point forward (but spoiler alert: the empathy wears off after a few more tracks). So far, these are the “least bad” vocals of the album, but I had no hopes it would be any different from the previous tracks. 4. Marquee Moon - 10:38 I liked the push/pull motion of the riff, but only after the drums started playing and I realized I my counting was on the offbeat and the riff is actually syncopated. this is by far the most creative thing on the entire album and probably the only reason I decided to round the rating up instead of down. like I mentioned before on the highlights section, I grew tired of the repetitiveness and had to withstand several more minutes of this song. the only reward was the short interlude excerpt from 8:42 and 9:12, which was really cool. the improvised solo before it has a chaotic nature and it reminds a bit of the cool effect of “not-ocidental” music genres breaking barriers and influencing ocidental music in general. hated the vocals. 5. Elevation - 5:05 super repetitive riff and and I got tired of the chord progression rather quickly. I liked the lead guitar fills between the sections (specifically into pre-chorusses and also the stuff before and after the chorus). the vocals aren’t so terrible on this one, but I still don’t like this style. I get the idea, i just don’t like this kind of singing, thus my incessant complains regarding this topic throughout the whole record. 6. Guiding Light - 5:32 at around this point I remember feeling like I was already too numb to clearly make any judgement on what was going on, and I was kinda counting how long until the album finally ended. this one probably beats the opener on the unremarkable category. I must say the outro was the best part, it felt good to think it was almost over. 7. Prove It - 5:00 the band plays a look with rests and groovier riffs, more movement going on. the drum sound caught my attention once more and I compliment the recording and mixing of the drums on the record, because despite all the points made, the drums are very consistent and match the style very properly, if not to say they elevate the whole thing. the section between 2:45 and 3:16 was the best part of this track and I think the performance imperfections are what makes it work for me. hated the vocals, but I was much more used to it at this point that most of the album had already played. 8. Torn Curtain - 6:56 cool idea for the intro, another showcase to highlight how the drum sounds match the style perfectly. the riff idea for this one sounded fresh in comparison to rest of the album. the dramatic vibe was cool and is what makes the track work for me. I like the strange chords at the end and shifting melodies that seem to indicate key changes that doesn’t really happen. I head piano on some other track, but only on this one it was memorable enough for me to point it out. outro seemed too long, but it could be me anxiously waiting for the end so I could play anything else (preferably with good vocals).

Eh, it wasn't so bad. I like Venus.

I like how it sounds, but I find it boring.

Grating voice.

Eh? I think I might be burning out a bit on this, because this sounds like a pretty normal album of the era. They try to be a bit Stonesy, a bit Queeny, a bit Bowie...y. The lyrics are all over the place, making me think that's why it's here. I listened to it again, and my opinion hasn't changed. It's fine. Just fine.

This album has cemented the idea in my head that a bad singer can completely ruin a good band. I've seen it before on this list but usually the bands behind the singer aren't this good. I can't give this anything higher than a 2, I just can't stand that singer.

still sounds remarkably contemporary, but i don’t like the vocals ! 2

ass meat

This was kind of a worst of both world album for me. Not edgy or energetic enough for punk and not melodic enough for rock. Like a mismatch of the vocals to the band.

Didn't do much for me. Did like 'Torn Curtain'

one banger, many saddies

Maybe no

Contains many bridges to genres and understandably, it is culturally significant. But the singing is grating and except for the title track, it never grips. The solo work is technically impressive but the sound is ultimately dry and boring. Important but dated.

At least after this record, Spotify chose The Jesus & Mary Chain for me.

Overall, this is disappointing and pretentious. The music is fine to very good (a mix of the Stones, Velvet Underground, and post-punk), but the vocals sound like a slightly more masculine Patti Smith... Highlights: "Venus" (Velvet Underground-ish), "Friction" (guitar has like a spaghetti western sound), "Guiding Light" (Stonesy ballad, but feels a bit long)

Ok, cross between Violent Femmes and Sparks

i know people love this album but nothing about it makes me feel anything

Nichts wirklich hängen geblieben.

Like, this is forgettable.

This is one of those where it's super clear that this was hugely influential on a lot of the musicians that I adore and, it's likely that I would've been into them had I been a certain age in 1977. But at this point, it's just too far from my taste to be something I'd listen to.

This guys voice grated on me so bad. I was also really bored waiting for this to end 2 ⭐️

i prefer the radio

2 - weird

trotos

I know the name, heard they were influential but have only listened to a track or two over the years. Based on vocal prowess I understand why they never went mainstream, but worse singers are household names. His style is not smooth or catchy, the production is average and the mix is off I'd say. I don't hear anything I'd ever want to listen to a second time. "Prove It" is the only gem on the album. The title track is the only other decent song but again, the mix is so indie band and bland with a half decent solo thrown in. It goes for nearly 11 minutes though, complete overkill. They'd have been better served to have 12 shorter songs vs 8 long songs. Not a Top 1001 album, not even close in my book.

ganz nett, muss ich aber nicht andauernd hören

Annoying voice but good music beats, every song sounds similar. Couldn’t listen to all the songs

Good instrument play but lyrics and singer not my favorite

A list of complaints about this album: Pretentious and lacking punch. And by that I mean that I fail to find any real energy or enthusiasm. Perhaps purposely droll, so cool we can't be bothered? Tom Verlaine is not a good singer. Not even in the Neil Young/Bob Dylan/Tom Petty way where the lack of vocal chops is secondary to the soul and lyricism. Just plain unpleasant. Proving once again that you can't just call something "punk" if it sounds weird and amateurish. I'm (again and not for the last time, I'm sure) missing something as this album is in the pantheon of American post-punk, Critically Acclaimed™, but I didn't like it. It has moments, but those moments require SO MUCH EFFORT on the listener's part. Maybe you had to be there? I get what they're trying to do, which is set themselves above the rest of the downtown art-rock scene in 1977. Who rejects an invitation to be produced by Eno? Tom Verlaine thought he could do better himself. Incredible. Hard to listen to some of these albums in an intellectual clean room due to their reputation. Part of an insular scene that was too cool for anyone except those in it. I don't think they were trying to be popular or appeal to an audience outside the scene. Certainly they wouldn't care what I thought.

Spent the whole time listening to this thinking they sounded like someone else but never figuring it out. Fairly forgettable for me I'm afraid

Not my cup of tea

This was fairly unremarkable. I didn’t hate it, but I really didn’t like it either. “Marquee Moon,” despite its length, and “Guiding Light” were my favorite songs, but overall this just didn’t grab me.

Bleh. It’s fine

Flaccid Rolling Stones.

2 Star. Forgettable and deceptively long. It’s only 45 minutes, but there are also only 8 songs. So each song is almost 6 minutes long. Would like to know what sets this apart because I don’t know the context!

Elevation is a terrible song. One of the worst on this list that isn’t made by a German junkyard instrument band. Most of the rest of the album is pretty pleasant just not very memorable. Sitting at a two and a half bit Elevation is bad enough to round down.

There's nothing really wrong with this album, but it does commit the biggest sin for me. It's boring. I would recommend someone listens to Kollaps by Einstürzende Neubauten over this. With Kollaps, you can at least trauma bond with someone who's also listened to it. With Marquee Moon, you can say "yeah, I've heard it" and move on.

I don't even remember it

Music sounded ok but meh overall

I def got into the guitar melodies of a few of the tracks but nothing else really gripped me

Instrumental is ok but really don’t like the vocals

Main takeaway for me: I thought they were British

Proto-punk It not yet had the energy of later punk, but also you could hear the themes that will become so prominent later.

Best Song: Marquee Moon. An actually engaging, sprawling rock track. I like that it didn't just waffle off into the ether, but actually came back to the original groove to close itself off satisfactorily. Worst Song: Torn Curtain. We didn't need another 7 minute, meandering track to close out the album. It already felt like a long 45 minutes. Overall: Certainly okay. Undoubtedly alright. Definitively existent. Nothing particularly exciting about it, nor is there anything offensive. I will forget about this one quickly.

It was ok, listenable, nothing good but nothing bad.

Idk, not my thing. Had some OK stuff here & there, but overall I'll probably never think of this album again.

Scusate, ma l’ho trovato piuttosto noioso. Non vedevo l’ora finisse. Peccato, perché le aspettative c’erano.

Kinda nice. A maybe again album. Didn't get into it despite a couple of listens. Didn't really grab. Moderate interest in trying again. Low 3 stars. Maybe 2. Um, um ,um let's go 2.

too much prog rock for me

Look, I really want to like this one, I've tried for years to really dig in and listen. But every time, I don't care for the lyrics, singer's voice and the music is mostly at funeral dirge pace. If anything it does feel like I'd imagine the scene in the late 70's around the Bowery NYC area. It's like the punk rock version of prog rock and I just can't accept it. Critics and musicians says it's amazing, but I just don't f'n hear it. I've tried - this probably my 10th listen at this point. Some of them just don't click.

Ok, I thought I would like this more. Just some decent background noise.

Not bad music, but the vocalist probably takes a few listens to get used to

Totally fine. In fact, it gives me hope that my musical techniques could give me fame and notoriety some day.

ehh. I tried a couple times and just found it boring and underwhelming.

Beetje repetitief

Not for me!

Fairly decent.
