Confession: I don’t love The Beach Boys. I know that this album is often considered the most important in rock history. And I certainly cannot deny Brian Wilson’s influence on bands that I love dearly. But mostly I think this band is goofy. This may not be a valid criticism, but this music is squeaky clean. Frankly it belies the psychosis of its creator. And I don’t know how many songs about boats or surfing the average person truly needs to listen to. But they’re all here. I’ll give it credit for its influence. But I have tried and tried to like this band, and with few exceptions I just can’t. But, we’re rating albums and not the groups themselves. Incredible harmonies and some sonically interesting stuff here right from the get-go. Maybe it’s revolutionary? I dunno. 2.5/5.

The Beach Boys has some good songs, but they're not my favourite band. This album feels pretty much like our last record, 'Off The Wall' with Michael Jackson, which had 2 smash hits and then the rest was pretty meh. That's how I feel about this as well; 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' and 'God Only Knows' are stellar, but the rest is pretty forgettable. Just like I did with the MJ record, I'm going to give this a strong 3, where the good songs push it up and the rest drags it down.
This is such an iconic sound, instantly recognizable through the harmonies and singing. The hits are great with "God Only Knows" a step above the rest, such a great song. The non-hits were not at all as good and I found myself wanting to listen to any of the songs I knew again. I also had never thought about how similar some songs are to something "The Kinks" would do. Anyway this would normally be a 3 star album with all songs taken in to account but I feel an album with "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows" and "Sloop John B" deserves a 4.
Now I can see why people tell Sgt. Pepper was a lot inspired by this
clever and emotive, if plodding. boy bands of the early sixties, this early pre-synth psychedelic falls a little flat. while i do have this album on vinyl (gift), the orange “best of” pressing that was out at target gets a lot more turntable time, and i’m happy to leave a lot of these filler tracks on the cutting room floor. but man, when the beach boys hit, the baseball ends up in the next town over. my gut says 3.5 but to list up to 4 for the cultural significance, the experimentalism, the joy the two aforementioned vinyls have provided me, and honestly wouldn’t it be nice is such a shrine to pain. there’s a difference between liking and feeling seen on a record so even if i didn’t enjoy a lot of the finer sonic structure, i saw a ghost of sincerity, at least, flickering in and out.

Really nice. Ahead of its time
Completely original. Totally unique sounds throughout. Full of absolutely beautiful songs. Plus it has sloop john b for some reason and despite being out of place that song is great. A Masterpiece.
I wish I could go back in time and experience it when it was released. No doubt the album still has some amazing music just an incredible soundscape but I feel I don't fully appreciate because it sounds, well dated. Regardless is a 5 all the way.
Pet Sounds is truly a milestone of pop music. God Only Knows is beautiful and brilliant. I can imagine it boggled Beach Boys fans because it was such a leap from their earlier music. At times it’s a bit of sensory overload for me and feels like the wall of sound is just too dense and there’s nowhere to focus. But overall, I get why this record is so important.
My parents would listen to a lot of Beach Boys on car trips when i was a kid. I sort of thought their songs were a bit simple. It's a lot different now listening to this album after seeing the documentaries and hearing bands talk about the influence this record had. It's just a great album. God Only Knows is probably my favorite Beach Boys song.
What a great pop record. Excellent recording, songs that are fun to sing along to, and just an overall good time. This is the first time I listened to this all the way though, but it won't be the last.

Pet Sounds was always explained to me as The Beach Boys' answer to Sgt. Pepper. You can definitely see where Brian Wilson took inspiration. Is it as good as Sgt. Pepper? Absolutely not. Not even close. But is it still a fantastic record? Absolutely yes. The songs, the production - all of it is top notch. I have no hesitation giving this 5 stars. My favorite songs are "Sloop John B," "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times," and "Caroline, No" but honestly all the songs are great. "I Know There's An Answer" is also way better as "Hold On To Your Ego." Idk what Mike Love was on about with that one.
At first listen this seems to be a vapid record, compiling adolescent love songs with little meaning. Utilizing golden boy voices to make thier point. The songs sound similar and it's easy to thi k they are all similar. However after a 2nd and 3rd listen, I focused a little bit more intensely on the co tent and found deeper meaning and variety in the songs. At times, this record is surprisingly deep, with lyrical content discussing a range of situations. Musically the record sounds great and inventive. Fave songs: wouldn't it be nice God only knows Caroline, no I just wasn't made fir these times

(4/5) ******************************* I listened to this once before and didn't think it deserved it's "best albums of all time" status, and I still think that though I enjoyed it more this time. I forgot Sloop John B was on this album. That song is amazing, well-crafted, I love it. Bumps the whole thing over the hump from 3 to 4.

What is there to be said about Pet Sounds that hasn't been said already? This is probably one of the most influential and important albums of all time. But does it deserve that status? Yeah, it totally does. This is a pretty solid album by today's standards, but by 1966 standards? This thing is a freakin masterpiece! This whole album is very finely crafted to make something great. The singing, both when solo and all together, is quite good. The writing and lyrics are impactful, leading to this whole album feeling very personal to Brian Wilson. The instrumentation is very diverse, and the tone ranges from very feel-good in songs like "Wouldn't It Be Nice", to quite somber pieces like "Caroline, No". Overall, while there may be a few albums I've given a 4 that I might like more than Pet Sounds, the sheer impact and impressive nature of this album warrants a very deserved 5/5. EDIT: The thing that I said about liking some of the 4s more was stupid. This is one of the greatest albums ever made. "God Only Knows" alone is perfect enough to justify that. It's still a 5/5... obviously.

A cultural reset
The Beach Boys - Pet sounds 1. Aight we all know this song. It’s hippy dippy but it’s a bop. No complaints 2. Ooo this is majestic. Like frolicking in a field hand in hand with your main squeeze. Beautiful song 3. The vocals and guitar tone are stellar. Like this shit is vibes. This makes me wanna get stoned 4. Lord this is an artistic achievement for sure. A high water mark. they say this is one of the top 10 albums - an answer to sgt peppers. one of my favorite songs ever (sloop john b) is on this record along with maybe two other hits, but everything else is kind of monotonous. i think the rest of the good beach boys stuff is sprinkled across their discography. if you consider sgt peppers, every single one of the songs on that record is a classic… who do you think won?

A little repetitive but happy sounding and bright
God only knows is great and the Boys excel in songs in the round. Wouldn't it be Nice is indicative of the hits they would eventually produce. But this early work album is filled with mostly forgettable or annoying songs.
Not for me but it’s hit songs are iconic.

As surprised as I was yesterday about how good Motorhead was, and how well it stood up over time, this is the complete opposite. Hard to get through.

Ah, what more can be said about this album that hasn't already been said? To call Pet Sounds a masterpiece would not only be an understatement, it would also be selling it short. Perhaps the only true document of Brian Wilson unleashing his momentum sustaining genius without any kind of setback (regardless of critique), Pet Sounds continues to provide us with sources of sonic and compositional wizardry the likes of which have tried (and failed, probably) to replicate. If the surfing, cars and girls vibe is a millstone around the neck of those who cannot possibly take The Beach Boys seriously, then Pet Sounds proved that there was a way around it and a way forward to understanding how life works. It is a monolith.
This album is a known classic. But it’s still The Beach Boys.

Great album for a nice sunny day. Some songs felt a little lackluster, I generally like songs that have more feeling to them. A very universal album overall, I don’t think people could ‘hate’ this, it isn’t amazingly memorable but I did not dislike a single song. A crowd pleaser!

Yeah no this wasn't it for me. Despite having one of my favourite songs ever in it (God Only Knows is maybe one of the most beautiful songs ever imo) the overall album just didn't resonate. I listened in mono and genuinely that may be partly why? Will relisten in stereo but I feel like it's the content that misses for me. So much of the lyrics are the epitome of needy, unrequited, horny ballads without being enough of a banger to justify it. Go back to the beach lads. I feel like the album pivoted at Let's Go Away into some less paint by numbers pop and had some psych influences (Caroline No is such a bizzare end song that I think they're doing for an effect) but I just don't feel like it stuck the landing. Highlights: God Only Knows, Let's Go Away For Awhile, Sloop John B Relisten? Yes in stereo, then probs not. I've got the songs that I wanted from the album and don't love the full experience.

I mean, what can I say. I think is one of the top 5 albums ever made (Stereo Mix). The only downside is that they hadn't written "Good Vibrations," yet, as I think adding that song to his album would just make it transcend basically anything else... As much as I like a lot of intentionally dissonant anti-pop music, I do think that there is something about the way music and the human brain works that being able to make something truly artful with some experimentation that still is able to have pop elements that tingle the brain is one pinnacle of the art form, and Brian Wilson did that.

Delightful. All killer, no filler. I bought this album during a trip to Kansas City to find an apartment for my first job after graduating college. This album was on a near constant loop while I drove around during that trip. This album provokes a lot of different feelings in me. I want Sloop John B played at my funeral.

In my home, I have a little stand that says “NOW SPINNING” on it that you put the record cover on that’s currently in the record player. Coincidentally, this is the record that was already in the stand. Am I going to listen to this again even though I just did? Yes. Am I mad about it? No. Did I see Brian Wilson perform this entire album live? Yes. I have a high school memory of listening to Sloop John B over and over again on my Walkman on the bus from a track meet.

Several songs here that I knew, but didn't realize were Beach Boys. As usual for The Beach Boys, the harmonies are fantastic. This album makes you feel good. Overall it's fine, but it does feel like they've done this several times before and maybe the creativity and fire are fading.

- Depending on the day, I'd call this the best album of all time. It remains a glimmering marvel of pop craftsmanship, each song a miniature symphony that continue to reveal new facets of themselves with every new listen. - I've listened to Pet Sounds so many times over so many years that it's easy to take it for granted; it's the kind of album I could probably play over and over in my head if I wanted to, so embedded its become in my psyche. But when I actually pay attention to it I realize that it's still as magical as it was when I first heard it in high school. - I Just Wasn't Made For These Times / Pet Sounds / Caroline No might be the best finale to an album ever made. Three perfect songs that capture a devastatingly bittersweet sense of melancholy beauty, that also come full circle as a response to the joyous optimism of Wouldn't It Be Nice. "Sometimes I get very sad" might be the simplest, most heartbreaking chorus in pop history. - Don't Talk is just magical. - That's Not Me continues to grow more important to me as time goes on. - Fuck it, everything here is brilliant. Even Sleep John B., which I used to hold as the one throwaway, earns its slot. - Fascinating that Here Today is the song with the least streams on Spotify (I would've assumed it'd be one of the instrumentals). I choose to interpret that fact as a much-deserved "fuck you" to Mike Love.

Relation un peu particulière à cet album que je trouve très bien dans l'absolu, et dont j'aime beaucoup certaines chansons (dont God Only Knows), mais il manque un petit truc pour que ça "clique" personnellement avec moi. Du coup, vraiment bien, mais une appréciation peut-être pas entièrement viscérale de mon côté.

I’m Waiting for the Day - the lyrics are a little unhinged jk and the outro is boppy 6. Let’s Go Away for a While - was an instrumental but I liked the music. very 60s 7. Sloop John B - boppy 8. God Only Knows - their other hit and it was easy to listen to 9. I Know There’s an Answer - i like the lyrics and it's jazzy 10. Here Today - i liked it, it had a really cool instrumental 11. I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times - i really love the lyrics of this one, kinda relatable and it's a sad bop. 12. Pet Sounds - instrumental 13. Caroline, No - too ballady but a good closer
Sweet harmonies, layered arrangements, lovelorn and heartfelt lyrics. A couple of all-time classic singles. As much as I love the Beach Boys sound, I just don't think it's one of the best albums ever - as the critics seem to think. I don't reach for Pet Sounds when I want to hear summery Beach Boys (that would be "20 Golden Greats") Nevertheless, Pet Sounds was a significant songwriting and production change and done well. 3.5 out 5
I understand why people praise this album, but outside of the hits I don't necessarily love listening to it. Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Sloop John B, etc are great songs but the rest just doesn't draw me in. I give this a 5 on production value but a 3 on listenability.

There are a several songs that are absolute masterpieces, but I also find a lot of it boring. So tough call on rating.
God Only Knows is every bit as good as its reputation. I also really like the two instrumentals. The least effective song on the album is Sloop John B, which feels like it belongs on an earlier Beach Boys album. Still, an easy 5 stars.
I haven't heard this from start to finish in a long while. It really works well as a whole and extremely influential.
man, I grew up with the same classic Beach Boys singles as everyone listening to their parents' music in the 80s, but now as an adult, all I hear is the overproduction that I heard on "Smile," which I got in this project before "Pet Sounds." And that overproduction - the xylophones, the timpanis, the million-part harmonies - makes me think only of the scene from "Walk Hard." "I need more didgeridoos. A thousand didgeridoos!"
Great album
I love the Beach Boys. It’ll be understandable, knowing this, that I was very excited to be generated this album to listen to today. I feel like I’ve listened to this album before, but I don’t recognise the names of every track. I guess there are only so many songs I can fit in my brain before it starts deleting them to make more space. Songs I already knew: Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Sloop John B, God Only Knows Favourites: God Only Knows, Sloop John B If you were to ask me on any average day over the past ten years what my favourite song of all time is, there’s a pretty good chance I’ll have responded with God Only Knows. As far as I’m concerned, it is a perfect song. I’m fact, this album is full of perfection from every angle. The Beach Boys have very unique vocals, and even the two instrumental track here are great which is a good testament to their songwriting. Overall, obviously, I love it.

Very nice album
Hey, I've listened to this album before! I was so inspired to listen to it one week that despite my knowledge that it was on the generator, I knew I had to sit down and listen to it. I was blown away then (but somehow God Only Knows didn't grab me) but it's even better now. The harmonies on here are gorgeous, and the small orchestra Brian Wilson was controlling on this album is some of the most gorgeous displays of instrumentals on any modern pop record. No wonder there's two different instrumental tracks on this. Brian Wilson really did make a masterpiece here, and it's a shame the other band members saw that and still shut him down with "Smile" eventually. I've seen the average score the realization of that album has on here, and I'm hoping it's just a case of people totally misunderstanding the story behind that album after years of mental issues from Brian, because the man at least displays his genius here. 1966 to 1969 really was a magical era for music, huh?

What a great album!
There is a certain inevitability of this album being included in the pantheon. Wilson, yes a genius, produced this album widely considered his best work. I must say though, as a fan, I like the Studio Sessions best as you get to hear how Wilson talked to the band and produced the music in the many Studio Chatter sessions. But, Pet Sounds has its place and still stands. Innovative, interesting, and fun.

I've gotta side with the group here - the slow songs really drag "Pet Sounds" down. And that's a lot of dragging. There are a few gems, and even my ears can tell that there is some unique and sophisticated instrumentation and production, but it's not enough to make it a really rewarding listen. I'd love to read more about its place in history and its influence, but the Wikipedia page is by far the longest I've ever seen for an album, and that's gonna put me to sleep faster than listening to the album did.
God Only Knows is a masterpiece. However, I mostly dislike vocals sung entirely in falsetto so some of the slow songs I find to be grating. They are at their best when the tempo is a little faster.
The surf pop rock sound of The Beach Boys is long gone. This is an album I feel deep down. It’s like I’m looking through a window at Brian Wilson’s inner angst, but the window is open so I can feel the emotions blowing through the screen, surrounding me as they whisk by. Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Sloop John B are my favorite tracks here, mostly because they feel the most upbeat. There are plenty of other good tracks too. In this particular instance, I would like the album more if there were a couple more positive feeing tunes, but then it wouldn’t be as authentic. As an aside, it’s strange that Brian Wilson composed the album almost entirely without the rest of the band, but it is still under The Beach Boys name.

I get why this album is so highly praised. Great harmonies, amazing production values, great song writing. And I love how they manage to cram so much sound, in so many layers, into each song without it sounding muddy or overdone. I can totally see how ahead of its time this must have sounded when it came out. However, most of the songs were indistinguishable from each other. Extra stars for "God Only Knows" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice".
The sentiments in Brian Wilson's lyrics are plain and juvenile and epitomize pop music. For some reason they hit me in a deep way that other pop lyrics are not able to. The production, instrumentation, performances, vocal harmonies are all first rate. This is another 6 out of 5.

Very good, feel like I'm missing something in it though
This album is a phenomenal example of a band going an experimental route while still staying true to their own unique sound and having it all come out perfect. One of their first albums after separating with their long time manager, and many member's father, the band felt more free to create music they were passionate about. The songs are absolutely and completely beautiful. The lyrics are gorgeous and heartbreaking at all the appropriate times. Production is incredible, instrumentation is tight, vocals and harmonies are enchanting, and the vibe is immaculate across the entire album. The instrumentals "Let's Go Away for Awhile" and "Pet Sounds" don't feel forced like instrumentals often do. They fit perfectly into the structure of the album and I have no complaints with any of it. A masterpiece. 5/5

The Sundays of my youth were often spent in my family’s 1987 Ford Taurus station wagon, traversing the state of New Jersey from West to East and back so we could visit my grandparents in West New York, NJ (For the sake of clarification, West New York is a city in New Jersey that overlooks the Hudson River and New York City. It’s north of Hoboken and next to Union City, for the geographically inclined). The soundtrack to our car rides across the state was typically WCBS-FM, a New York based oldies station that would focus on early rock and roll/pop hits from the mid to late-1950’s through the late 60’s. While hair metal and, later, grunge ruled the airwaves, I was cutting my teeth on The Temptations, The Supremes, the Mamas and The Papas, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the Monkees, The Byrds, Ray Charles, Tommy James and the Shondells, and, of course, the Beach Boys most Sunday mornings and afternoons. So when the snare drum hits seven seconds into the opening track of this record, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice?”, I’m instantly taken back to those car rides, those trips to visit my grandparents at their 12th floor efficiency apartment that overlooked New York City. It’s one single hit on a snare drum, but it’s one of the most memorable and powerful drum intros in rock history. (Well…at least for me it is, you are welcome disagree.) Then the harmonies and Brian Wilson’s falsetto…what a absolutely incredible song. It’s perfect. The WCBS-ification of my musical tastes would end around age 11 or 12 when I started finding that the grunge and alternative rock of the day spoke to me in way that the 60’s music I had grown up with could never hope to. A decade or so later, in my mid-20’s, it turned out to be a solid musical foundation, as I grew to appreciate these songs again thanks to bands like Yo La Tengo or the Avalanches who had taken the influence of some of these mid-sixties sounds and turned them into something completely new and unique. This record, now that I’m thinking about it, is one that I associate more than most with my family. One more familial anecdote and I’ll wrap it up, I swear: In the mid-2000’s, my immediate family went down to Miami to spend Christmas with my dad’s brother and his family, as we would do every few years. My uncle decided that while we were there, the men of the family needed to do something together…a bonding experience, so to speak. So he booked a charter boat and we all got up at the ass crack of dawn to go fishing in the Atlantic. My Dad, brother and I, my uncle and his two sons…we were ready catch some fish and compete for familial bragging rights. Well, not even a mile out from shore, my Dad starts getting seasick. None of us had cast a line and the boat hadn’t even reached the spot where’d we fish and he was out, spending the remainder of the three hour trip below deck trying to keep what was left of his breakfast down. An hour later, the choppy seas started getting the best of my youngest cousin. Shortly after that, my brother was out, too. Did we buy some bunk Dramamine or something? What the was fuck going on? The goal had to change at that point. It wasn’t about which side of the family could catch more fish, it was “can I be the only member of my side of that family that can make it through this fishing trip without horking?” I needed something to shoot for after my Dad and brother couldn’t hack it. I’ve never wanted to barf more in my life, the water was extraordinarily choppy that morning and I’ve got a weak stomach to being with, but I had something to prove that day, or else face the ridicule of my uncle and oldest cousin who were still standing strong. I couldn’t let them think that no one on my side of the family had the wherewithal to make it through a 3 hour fishing trip. I don’t know how I did it, but I did it and I’ve never been happier to step foot on solid ground again. When the boat docked, my father moved like a man on a mission to get off of it. A few minutes back on land and he was back in good spirits. We went to a nearby restaurant for lunch and had some seafood, beer and laughs at the expense of the three seasick travelers, but mostly my father: he wasn’t even on the boat for 15 minutes before losing it. As we ate, “Sloop John B” came on over the restaurant’s sound system and I couldn’t contain my laughter. “Dad,” I said, “this song hitting close to home for you today?” He listened as the chorus kicked in…“Let me go home, I want to go home” and we all had a good laugh. Fuck me, that was long. I gotta stop using this place as a blog. Even with those memories attached, Pet Sounds isn’t an album I love enough to give 5 stars. It is a fantastic and staggering work of absolute genius, but it’s not entirely my cup of tea. I think Hendrix may have called it “psychedelic barbershop”: There’s only half of that equation that really speaks to me and it isn’t the barbershop part. It’s possible that Hendrix thing isn’t true, but that’s kind of what Pet Sounds is, right?
This is another obvious 5. To be honest, I’m surprised it only has a 3.9. Orchestrated to perfection, mature lyrics, amazing melodies, you’ve heard it all before. You don’t need my opinion on this.

the beach boys' pet sounds is probably more of an okay album by today's standards, but its existence in 1966 was much more groundbreaking. still, looking back on the beach boys' evolution through the years is fascinating. they didn't completely sever their connection to their original sound; these songs aren't as happy-go-lucky (and don't contain surf references), but they do have that saccharine quality that makes their music such easy listening. regardless, they are straddling their original sound and their newer, more mature sound here. "god only knows" is one of the most beautiful songs of all time, and it isn't a song that could have come out earlier in the beach boys' career.
Heh. So, here we are. One of the most highly regarded albums of all time...no doubt even the MOST regarded album in many people's opinions. And I don't like it. I fully understand this album's influence on modern pop music, and even its significance in the psychedelic music spaces. But for the most part, this album just drags and is uninteresting. To me, it sounds like an LSD trip, which Wilson cited as a big influence, anyway. I found myself wishing all of the other songs were more like "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows", as these songs are outstanding and the crown jewels of this album, as well as among the crown jewels of all Beach Boys work. But no, the rest of the album felt a bit disjointed from these songs. I want to love this more, but it's just really not for me. This may be my most controversial score to date, but here it is. It 100% deserves a spot on this project, though, of that there is no doubt.
Starts off w/ Wouldn't It Be Nice, a classic track. A few weaker tracks follow before I'm pleasantly surprised by such songs as I'm Waiting for the Day, Sloop John B and Here Today. Overall a pleasant album where I can see myself re-listening to at least half of the songs

this album really reminds me of my ex so that is sad, but i am very interested in listening to the songs which i don't know off here, because what i've heard is a very big mix of genre/vibe. wow okay the contrast between don't talk and i'm waiting for the day is significant, i quite like them both though. i like the instrumental piece as usual. god only knows reminds me both of my ex and gcse music which is a strange mix of emotions. i didn't like pet sounds as much as the first instrumental piece but it was still fun. i did not like the very end of the last song, uncomfortable album ending. very solidly okay album. enjoyed most songs and would listen to just under half again out of choice.
Wouldn't it be nice if this album was any good? Jokes aside, I was surprised that the most popular song on the album and the one it leads with is possibly the worst one on the album. The other songs don't seem to be built with being as catchy in mind, more so they sound more thoughtful or heartfelt. While I didn't particularly like any songs, it wasn't as difficult of an album to get through as most others, it makes for great background noise.

I love a few songs on this, especially God Only Knows. The songs I didn’t like as much, however, were pretty same-y and uninteresting. I will listen to about half of the album again in the future, but the other half is a skip for me.

Listen to this album. Today, it may sound like nothing out of the ordinary. But it is. Then go watch the biopic about Wilson and the band. It's very eye-opening, sad, and revelatory.

As a music fan, this album is known as being iconic, but to me their formulaic pop songs wear thin once you've heard the massive hits. It seems that they only write two types of songs: slow love songs and up-tempo beach songs. While that is very on-brand, most of the songs that fall into the same categories sound the same to me. That being said, the music is not bad or avoidable, and it definitely can take you back to a different time. I personally just don't see a lot of appeal in any of these songs for my personal listening outside the mega-hit. Score Breakdown: 3.639 & 3 -> 3.320

It's only recently that I've begun to appreciate The Beach Boys more fully, and that's entirely due to listening to the incredible podcast series, A History Of Rock Music In 500 Songs, which devotes a handful of episodes to songs by The Beach Boys. The series also discusses this album and helps place it in the context of its time's music, culture, and society, as well as showing how it influenced so many artists at the time and to follow, including the Beatles. Listening to it now, once again, with that better understanding of it, I enjoy it so much more. It's truly innovative and outstanding. I strongly encourage people to give the podcast series a try and to have the patience to start at Episode 1 and listen in order from there. This will be my second album review that features Brian Wilson, the first being his solo album, "Smile" . That album was apparently supposed to be released by The Beach Boys, and build on what they started with Pet Sounds. That didn't end up happening, however, becuase Brian took ~30 years off to get his mental health in check. This album marks a departure from the "surfer rock" style of music that The Beach Boys popularized. The musical themes went from girls, cars, and surfing in prior albums, to the alienation and loneliness that Brian was feeling while writing this album (he had already stopped touring with the band because of the stresses of being on the road). This is considered by many to be one of the first concept albums, having a similar theme, and dialog through the whole album. This was also the first album in which the Beach Boys didn't play instruments. The instrumentals were provided by session musicians The Wrecking Crew. Brian also included the super psychadelic aspects of "found sound" such as using pet noises (dogs barking), soda cans rattling, horns, theramins, bells, etc. The rest of the band didn't really agree with the direction that Brian was taking the band, but allowed him to create this album anyways, which didn't do as well as the rest of their stuff up to this point (probably because the public wanted more of the same surfer rock they came to love). The only real similarity that this album shares to any of their prior works is the harmonizing vocals. Overall, a weird album, but I can see how it was influential at the time. I am just not a Beach Boys fan. I thought my favourite song was going to be the well known "Wouldn't It Be Nice", but "Sloop John B" is a great song that I hadn't heard before. I probably won't seek this out in the future, but understand it's inclusion on the list. I am biased as I have put this on repeat many times before this list but I’m never tired of hearing it. You know, I thought that I had listened to the album before, but there were a couple of tracks that struck me as completely unfamiliar. Those "unfamiliar" tracks were also my least favorite in this listen, so maybe they were just not memorable for me. As a whole, I loved it!

In 2015 I saw the movie “Love and Mercy” about Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys and finally made the effort to listen to Pet Sounds. I liked it a lot! Now, after even more exposure to The Beach Boys I like this even more. Each time I listen I hear more of what is going on in the arrangements and it is pretty jaw-dropping! What an amazing album!
In 1965, Brian Wilson changed pop music to a degree that could only be rivaled by the Beatles. This album took a progressive spin on rock music, incorporating classical orchestras, strange key choices, and unusual choices of instruments (like bike horns and soda cans) to produce a beautiful and lush yet consistent album that reflects the introspective and highly emotional moods and thoughts of Wilson. Vocals are much richer and more complex than previous Beach Boys works, aligning with the instrumentation and lyrical subject to create something that feels deep. Every album on here is a hit, and I was moved by many tracks in ways that no other album could compare. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" has such adolescent optimism for a future motivated by intense feelings of romance. It's such a perfect opener, with a nostalgic opening melody and bursting with so much energy and excitement. It invokes classic Beach Boys harmonies but Wilson's shifting lead vocals are so novel. And it's so fast too, with no second feeling wasted. My favorite lyrics here are the bridge "You know it seems the more we talk about, it only makes it worse to live without it. But let's talk about it." This pretty much says all you need to know about the song, how self-aware the narrator is in his own naïveté. The closing scats just show his joy and excitement for the future. "You Still Believe in Me" immediately shows what this album is going to be about, showcasing the sentimentality and surprisingly intimate vocal techniques. The fuzzy deep intro forms a stark contrast to the intro song. The overlaying baroque harpsichord set a very mild tone until the loud vocals burst near the end. The simple harpsichord allows the strange instruments to really stand out and pull your attention, like the bike horns. Then there's that false ending before the loud vocals suddenly come in again. It's all very dramatic and uncomfortable but fitting for the themes and emotions conveyed. "That's Not Me" is a bit of an unsettling song with how neither the instruments nor vocals ever seem to take a break. He just keeps going about how confused he is that he abandoned everything he loved to go for his dreams, which turned out to not live up to expectations. A highly relatable song and a common theme of depression, you can feel his emotional state. Both a subject and method were never really seen in music before. "Don't Talk" is the most sentimental song on the album, so low and intimate and sincere. Very romantic how the whole song is about him relaxing his lover to just exist and enjoy each other's presence. "I'm Waiting for the Day" is a cute relatable song about someone trying to change someone's world who has been hurt and traumatized by another. The narrator is so passionate (punk-like music) and sentimental (baroque pop). It's fun transitioning between the two moods of fiery love and sincere love. "Let's Go Away for Awhile" is one of two instrumental tracks that Wilson felt was better without vocals, and I agree. It's too busy and peaceful for vocals and contributes really well to the vibe. It's a beautiful fusion between pop and classical, and I wish more music like this existed. I guess New Age is close, but this is so much fuller and multi-layered. "Sloop John B" is another radio staple and the loudest and catchiest song. A pretty emotional song that just gets increasingly louder about someone who so desperately wants to go back to where he feels safe and comfortable. Super catchy and fun, a great way to close the side and excite people for the second half. "God Only Knows" is regarded as one of the most acclaimed songs of all time, and for a good reason with how insanely powerful its lyrics and string orchestral sound are. Featuring all sorts of strange instruments, my favorites are the whimsical woodwinds in the middle. The most memorable part is that gradually louder closer utilizing the vocal rounds. "I Know There's an Answer" is a gorgeous song originally titled "Hang on to your Ego" until anti-drug Mike Love threatened to leave unless they changed it. A really powerful chorus and an awesome horn section. God, these instruments sound so perfect together in that closer. "Here Today" is the most tense song on the album. So powerful when the back vocals and horns burst in during the chorus. I was really engaged once I heard that plot twist in the middle. I really love the poetic dragging complaints; you can really feel his pain. That instrumental section is absolutely insane and a journey on its own. I like the idea that this is the same girl in "Wouldn't It Be Nice" showing a transition of love with so much hope to someone's entire world destroyed and him trying to save another victim. "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" is my favorite deep cut. So much emotion in those vocals of a socially isolated character. So many lines hit hard, from his superiority complex, to his sense of hopelessness, to his lack of fitting in. The build-up of the chorus is full of lush counterpoint harmonies and screaming lead vocals. The instrumental has cool hollow percussions and some weird screeching near the end. It just feels weird and sad, and leaves the audience feeling bad without a very satisfying conclusion, the narrator trailing off hopelessly. "Pet Sounds" is the other instrumental track. Sounds like lounge music with its groovy surf guitar sound and Latin percussion. The only song I felt could be better, but it's still amazing and memorable as is. "Caroline No" is a depressing closer to the record, with sparse quiet instrumentation. The smooth jazzy chorus is so pleasant but is short and quiet. My favorite part is again the narrator and his desperate pleas. This album had such a huge impact on me, and I was shocked by how an album could sound so depressing and hit me on an emotional level in so many ways. I listen to a lot of slowcore like dream pop and shoegaze, but most records tend to be tame or repetitive melodically as much as I like the sound. And most lyrics are too muffled for me to pay attention. But here, they take the spotlight and it's hard not to hear Brian Wilson's desperation and sincerity with super clear lyrics and emotional vocals. The melodies in themselves are too strange not to notice, and that's not even including the weird instruments mentioned. It's an all-around peculiar and incredible album, and I wish others like this could exist.
I have an overwhelming desire to go and buy a block of Cadbury’s after listening to opening track ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’. Oh, and the rest of ‘Pet Sounds’ is overrated, and I’ve listened to it many times over the years. It’s just the same couple of songs, rehashed over and over again for the length of an album. Taken individually the songs are all great, but listened to as a whole, things get repetitive. It’s still a good record, just not GOAT good.

The instrumentation on this album is lush and gorgeous, definitely a tier above the kind of pop The Beach Boys started out with.
This album really grew on me over the course of listening to it a couple times today. I had heard it in full for the first time last month and didn't care for it much, but today I listened to it louder and caught a lot of the details I hadn't before. I get why people like it now even if this midtempo chamber pop style isn't really my thing most of the time. 4 stars just because of personal preference but Pet Sounds is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential albums ever.

I was excited about this one. Outside of wouldn't it be nice, sloop john B, and God only know, this was a very meh album.

Really a 2.5 out of 5. The vocal-harmonies are just kinda off putting to me, but I understand that Good Vibrations is one of the most innovative Pop songs.

I wrote this review while I was lying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did. Considered an all time classic by many, it’s not fully my cup of tea. Like half of my cup of tea..wouldn’t it be nice if it was my full cup of tea? Some songs were actually really great, like God Only Knows is elite. I had a 3 but I bumped to a 4
All time classic. God Only Knows has one of the nicest melody/chord progression combos ever devised. Wouldn't it be Nice is such a great feel good song. The various supporting tracks here are a mixed bag but generally good. Brian Wilson had such an ear for melody and harmony, his vocal line compositions here are amazing. Shame he went nuts. Also Mike Love is a bastard.

Obviously this is a pretty classic album and I can say that it did not disappoint. Really futuristic pop for the time it came out and the fusion of a lot of different genres comes through in a very interesting way. I would say that I liked it a lot but I don't think it is as perfect as many people think it is. There aren't any bad songs per se but I do think the vocals can get slightly annoying after a while and some of the songs are a bit close sounding. Still great and is a 9-9.5/10 but not the clear 10/10 many people call it. The best songs to me were "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "You Still Believe In Me", "That's Not Me", "I'm Waiting For The Day", "God Only Knows" and "Here Today".

Ah the Brian Wilson solo album.. Own it, haven't listened to for about 10 years. It is a beautiful masterpiece. Baroque pop with gorgeous production. Every track contains magic. 4.5
Just so absurdly lush, the arrangements here are so lovely it's insane. Musical profundity through and through.
A true staple piece in music. And prog pop is quite an interesting genre to explore as well.
A couple hits, but I'm not as much of a fan of their deep cuts. Their harmonies are great, but most of the album is a lot less energy than I would've expected from the Beach Boys. Still worth a listen.

I get that the have great voices, interesting arrangements, and thoughtful lyrics, but I just can't sign off on this being one of the great albums of all time. This was a band of talented musicians whom I FEEL were marketed into lameness
It's pretty good but I didnt like it that much
This is an album that I enjoy more and more each time I listen to it. At first I couldn’t reconcile these largely lethargic songs with the sound I knew of the Beach Boys from one of the greatest hits packages I listened to as a kid. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out why this was such a highly regarded album. In recent years I’ve come to appreciate how ambitious this album is. The sound palette and arrangements are lush and huge and unconventional for the time. The original mono mix is pretty dense, but the stereo mix reveals just how much ear candy is jammed into this record. I’ve never bought a copy of this record, mostly because I could never decide which mix I wanted. Listening to them side by side, I’ve decided I should have both. 4.5
Not my personal favorite, but there are some incredible soundscapes here.
Its a vibe, made me feel happy. But I felt like I was listening to one long song. Maybe I was just spacing out but I didn't even tell when the album ended (I guess thats cuz spotify starts playing songs afterwards) Overall pretty alright but nothing I'd write home about

One of the best. Listened to this on shrooms in Thailand and still remains as a very fond memory. Incredible amount of detail and effort went into this album, and it paid off.

El shock sonoro a los oyentes es ilposible mo reconocerlo, el disco en si es un 10, pero para mi es indisfrutable, ds como una pieza de arte extreordinaria solo que no me parece bella. Le voy a dar el diez porque no se piede mentir peor fua.
I understand how this was influential, but still isn't something I'd seek out. Favorite songs were I'm Waiting for the Day and Pet Sounds.
The Beach Boys have such a distinctive sound and I heard it throughout this album. I think the length of the album was perfect and each song was cute and fun and exactly what i expected.
One of the best - if not *the* best - aspects of this entire exercise is learning or re-learning the history of popular music; e.g. why certain albums are considered classics, or even lost/should-have-been classics. Pet Sounds is always placed on "greatest/alltime best" album lists but aside from a few unavoidably huge singles, I'd wondered why I never listened to it or even heard it while growing up (or knew anyone that owned it) ... I'm reminded that the album was actually out of print for years before reissued on CD in the 90s. I never could get into the Beach Boys. Or as a kid even get beyond "I *really* don't like the Beach Boys" - they always seemed intertwined in my brain with minor league baseball promo nights and songs that sounded like commercial jingles. But let's go - I enjoyed and was surprised by their "Surf's Up" album so keeping an open mind here... "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows" are really just great pieces of music that exist beyond any pop or rock definitions. And my first time through it today almost restricted my view to these particular singles which I already knew well. But on my second pass - and a pointedly uninterrupted one at that - things kinda clicked. I like this far more as a full or singular work rather than a collection of songs. It's an experience; almost dream-like with heavy usage of major 7th and complex chords, key changes, and unique harmonies. I'm not a fan of some of the cheesy/dated lyrics which I only seem to notice when the music dips a bit for me (e.g. "You Still Believe In Me") but it really is an impressive body of work overall, especially considering the time (1966). And it's pretty apparent that a lot of conceptual albums to follow wouldn't or couldn't have existed without this preceding them. One example is Jellyfish: one of my favourite bands of all-time - they could never have existed without this album. Not a fan of some of the overly-syrupy sounds but it was era-appropriate. Also not into Mike Love's lead vocals but when he's kept at a minimum I'm all-in. TL;DR: I get it now. 8/10 4 stars.
Better than the Beatles
A beloved album that I've tried a few times now to come around to (the attempts have typically been 5-10 years apart) and I just can't get into it the way so many do. I feel like I can academically understand why it is so beloved and how groundbreaking it was but in the end, I'm just not feeling it. I do love "Sloop John B" though.
Masterpiece.
Pop perfection. 4.5 rounded down to 4 as I'm not always in the mood for this delightful brand of sugary sweetness. Not quite The Beatles but so so close.
