Ive listened to this a few times in the past due to its hype, but I dont really get it. It often comes out top from quite reputable music journalists as ‘best album of all time’, which surprises me. Its a good, pop album with some big songs on. But there’s quite a bit fluff and filler for me overall, and it’s just a bit too light and airy. Like every song I feel has been done before by one band or another. Maybe thats credit to Beach Boys for getting there first, or maybe its because it’s a simple tried and tested formula. I dunno. Its good, but it’s not the best.

I do understand the huge reputation this album has now, its much deeper and accomplished than other beach boys. Get the feeling it was heavily influenced by the Beatles and to be fair God only knows would fit nicely on any of their stuff. Though I can tell it's a well made album, in general it isn't for me. It's all a bit too nice, there's kind of two gears, mildly happy and mildly sad. Think it's largely just how music sounded in that time but it makes a whole album a bit pedestrian. That's not to say it isn't very listenable but I'm not excited.

One of the most icon albums not just in the Beach Boys catalogue but in general. Very wintery - with the jingling and the like. God Only Knows is in a bunch of Christmas movies. Odd turn for a band founded on summer vibes, surfing, and hotrods. Obviously a classic but a little too jingly and slow for my taste.

I liked the length of the album and the songs, as it allowed me to listen to the album multiple times today. I had high expectations so I really tried to like it but I couldn't get into most of the songs. The vocals felt like a bit much after a while

The internet said a lot of amazing things about this album but I thought it wasn’t all that. Maybe my expectations were too high. There’s a few great songs, but to me, the amazing innovation that was supposed to make it unique just didn’t sound that unique. Solid but not amazing. 6.5/10

6/10 - I liked the feel of the songs but they all kind of felt like the same song. Individually none were fantastic or horrible. Overall slightly better than okay.

Similar feelings to that mamas and papas album. Old pop music just doesn't really do anything for me, and it's probably not something I'd listen to again, but it wasn't bad. 6/10

Found the "pet sounds" to be distracting and unnecessary. Whole album was a bit too low tempo for my tastes.

I am not a huge fan of the Beach Boys, but cannot deny that they have many catchy tunes, that I like very much. This album shows growth in musical direction away from their standard beach party music. This album was Brian Wilson's response to the release of Rubber Soul by the Beatles. He has definitely taken the Beach Boys to a new musical level with this, but I still give the edge to the Beatles here. (IMO). I find that as the Beatles moved away from "The Fab Four", their music grew increasingly better. With the Beach Boys I like several songs on this record, but tend to like their party fair a little better. I listen to both the mono and stereo mixes of this (2016, 50th anniversary mixes). I liked the stereo mix better in terms of sound quality.

Ok so you may call me a heathen but I don't hear how this is supposed to be some sort of masterpiece or revolutionary sound. The only reason I'm not giving this a 2 is because of God Only Knows and because some of the songs have solid lyrics. However, otherwise I found this whole album profoundly mid. Musically it was just kind of blah and I think that's just me I am not a big fan of The Beach Boys sound, it sounds plastic and like they're all smiles and basically 60's frat boys. Brian Wilson's falsetto isn't terrible which is nice but he uses it an awful lot and there's constant ohhhhh's and ahhhhhh's in the background which I just felt was completely unnecessary. Overall it might have been revolutionary in the 60's but it is well past its prime now.

overall it's a good album. given some of the other pop music at the time, this was more than generic bubble gum sounds. like that they still have the classic Beach Boy harmonies. lyrically, you can hear some of the mental issues Brian Wilson was wrestling with in several songs.

I liked the album, but I have to be honest, it wouldn’t be something I’d listen to everyday. The Beach Boys having a few tracks in a larger playlist is grand, but after a while they start to wind me up.

A very cohesive lovestruck album. I was familiar with a few of the songs before listening. I enjoyed it.

Know this one very well. Katy’s dad/family have listened to it for years so I’ve grown to like it. Also biased based on a pretty good documentary I saw on Brian Wilson.

Thought this was... okay? Some great tracks but for all the talk about the rich orchestration and production I thought it sounded really ramshackle and echoey in parts. Obviously important but controversially I think I prefer my Beach Boys singing about going surfing with their best girl etc

Look, I can appreciate this album for it’s place in history but it was just a bit of a snore for me. Except for Sloop John B. And I like The Beach Boys! But wouldn’t be on rotation for me.

Things I don't like: falsetto, fading out at the end of songs, and so many ooohs and aaahs. Things I do like: meaningful lyrics, good rhythm This album was bold for sure. Musical talent here is unquestionable. So creative with the choice of instruments. It is not enjoyable to listen to with the ooohs, aaaahhs, and falsetto. I wonder how it would sound with no falsetto. I imagine this album would be more enjoyable for me at "An Evening with The Beach Boys" where there was no expectation of dancing.

A lot of good tunes but only a couple really stood out. Overall enojed it. Really has that late 60 acid vibe.

This was cool, nice to listen to other music from the 60s besides the Beatles. For as much acid as these guys took the subject matter still mostly revolved around getting the girl back. They also have nice voices.

i was struck by the instrumental arrangements as well as the vocal harmonies, on some off the songs, not all. maybe another listen. loved the unexpected interval on i may not always love you. some of the lyrics are so simple as to be bland expressions of how the singer is feeling (sad).

I can't say I'm all in on this one. Tried to listen again with a totally open mind, just doesn't grab me. I do understand it's ground breaking brillance but it's just not my bag

I see the love for this album. Absolute masterclass in composition. Way ahead of it's time. Obvious classics include: Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B, God Only Knows. Not sure if it's an album that I will keep coming back to for the entirety, even though it is a short album.

I know that it's regarded as a creative landmark, but I just don't get the fawning. The songs range from great to fine, with one bona fide dog ("Sloop John B"), so the adulation is mostly about the the production and arrangements, which allegedly aimed to compete with The Beatles, but... really?...

I never really *got* the Beach Boys, but catchy, and a bit dissonant. Even though it sounds happy, there's a lot of heaviness underneath. Feels like living in LA. I heard it referred to as "church" pop. And I read arguments that it's a concept album, which I think I agree with.

A bit bland. Saw them live in a 9/11 anniversary concert in Chicago only two of the original band but very authentic sound still

I think I don't get it.

Had never really listened to the Beach Boys before and was suprised by how much I liked this. The album was fun and felt like the right length.

Sadder than expected, and honestly a bit underwhelming. Typical Beach Boys sounds but only Wouldn't It Be Nice is very memorable

I've always heard that this was the best BB album. If you listen to just one album, listen to this one. Ok? It starts off with a very familiar song and for me drops off immediately . It's a good album but very lack luster for me. The number of members in this band doesn't match the amount of music on these songs. They should sound way more bold and filling for the number of members.

Confession: I don’t love The Beach Boys. I know that this album is often considered the most important in rock history. And I certainly cannot deny Brian Wilson’s influence on bands that I love dearly. But mostly I think this band is goofy. This may not be a valid criticism, but this music is squeaky clean. Frankly it belies the psychosis of its creator. And I don’t know how many songs about boats or surfing the average person truly needs to listen to. But they’re all here. I’ll give it credit for its influence. But I have tried and tried to like this band, and with few exceptions I just can’t. But, we’re rating albums and not the groups themselves. Incredible harmonies and some sonically interesting stuff here right from the get-go. Maybe it’s revolutionary? I dunno. 2.5/5.

The Beach Boys has some good songs, but they're not my favourite band. This album feels pretty much like our last record, 'Off The Wall' with Michael Jackson, which had 2 smash hits and then the rest was pretty meh. That's how I feel about this as well; 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' and 'God Only Knows' are stellar, but the rest is pretty forgettable. Just like I did with the MJ record, I'm going to give this a strong 3, where the good songs push it up and the rest drags it down.

A little repetitive but happy sounding and bright

God only knows is great and the Boys excel in songs in the round. Wouldn't it be Nice is indicative of the hits they would eventually produce. But this early work album is filled with mostly forgettable or annoying songs.

Not for me but it’s hit songs are iconic.

A lot of screechy guitar and whiney love songs. It was okay. The overall sound is good for background music but not something I would go out of my way to listen to.

I’m Waiting for the Day - the lyrics are a little unhinged jk and the outro is boppy 6. Let’s Go Away for a While - was an instrumental but I liked the music. very 60s 7. Sloop John B - boppy 8. God Only Knows - their other hit and it was easy to listen to 9. I Know There’s an Answer - i like the lyrics and it's jazzy 10. Here Today - i liked it, it had a really cool instrumental 11. I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times - i really love the lyrics of this one, kinda relatable and it's a sad bop. 12. Pet Sounds - instrumental 13. Caroline, No - too ballady but a good closer

Sweet harmonies, layered arrangements, lovelorn and heartfelt lyrics. A couple of all-time classic singles. As much as I love the Beach Boys sound, I just don't think it's one of the best albums ever - as the critics seem to think. I don't reach for Pet Sounds when I want to hear summery Beach Boys (that would be "20 Golden Greats") Nevertheless, Pet Sounds was a significant songwriting and production change and done well. 3.5 out 5

I understand why people praise this album, but outside of the hits I don't necessarily love listening to it. Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Sloop John B, etc are great songs but the rest just doesn't draw me in. I give this a 5 on production value but a 3 on listenability.

There is a certain inevitability of this album being included in the pantheon. Wilson, yes a genius, produced this album widely considered his best work. I must say though, as a fan, I like the Studio Sessions best as you get to hear how Wilson talked to the band and produced the music in the many Studio Chatter sessions. But, Pet Sounds has its place and still stands. Innovative, interesting, and fun.

I've gotta side with the group here - the slow songs really drag "Pet Sounds" down. And that's a lot of dragging. There are a few gems, and even my ears can tell that there is some unique and sophisticated instrumentation and production, but it's not enough to make it a really rewarding listen. I'd love to read more about its place in history and its influence, but the Wikipedia page is by far the longest I've ever seen for an album, and that's gonna put me to sleep faster than listening to the album did.

God Only Knows is a masterpiece. However, I mostly dislike vocals sung entirely in falsetto so some of the slow songs I find to be grating. They are at their best when the tempo is a little faster.

the beach boys' pet sounds is probably more of an okay album by today's standards, but its existence in 1966 was much more groundbreaking. still, looking back on the beach boys' evolution through the years is fascinating. they didn't completely sever their connection to their original sound; these songs aren't as happy-go-lucky (and don't contain surf references), but they do have that saccharine quality that makes their music such easy listening. regardless, they are straddling their original sound and their newer, more mature sound here. "god only knows" is one of the most beautiful songs of all time, and it isn't a song that could have come out earlier in the beach boys' career.

this album really reminds me of my ex so that is sad, but i am very interested in listening to the songs which i don't know off here, because what i've heard is a very big mix of genre/vibe. wow okay the contrast between don't talk and i'm waiting for the day is significant, i quite like them both though. i like the instrumental piece as usual. god only knows reminds me both of my ex and gcse music which is a strange mix of emotions. i didn't like pet sounds as much as the first instrumental piece but it was still fun. i did not like the very end of the last song, uncomfortable album ending. very solidly okay album. enjoyed most songs and would listen to just under half again out of choice.

overall it made me feel good, it was chill vibey songs but again its not a genre i listen to a lot, my only 'oo this is a good song' reaction was for "wouldn't it be nice", so 3.5

I love a few songs on this, especially God Only Knows. The songs I didn’t like as much, however, were pretty same-y and uninteresting. I will listen to about half of the album again in the future, but the other half is a skip for me.

As a music fan, this album is known as being iconic, but to me their formulaic pop songs wear thin once you've heard the massive hits. It seems that they only write two types of songs: slow love songs and up-tempo beach songs. While that is very on-brand, most of the songs that fall into the same categories sound the same to me. That being said, the music is not bad or avoidable, and it definitely can take you back to a different time. I personally just don't see a lot of appeal in any of these songs for my personal listening outside the mega-hit. Score Breakdown: 3.639 & 3 -> 3.320

Solid pop but nothing memorable

This will be my second album review that features Brian Wilson, the first being his solo album, "Smile" . That album was apparently supposed to be released by The Beach Boys, and build on what they started with Pet Sounds. That didn't end up happening, however, becuase Brian took ~30 years off to get his mental health in check. This album marks a departure from the "surfer rock" style of music that The Beach Boys popularized. The musical themes went from girls, cars, and surfing in prior albums, to the alienation and loneliness that Brian was feeling while writing this album (he had already stopped touring with the band because of the stresses of being on the road). This is considered by many to be one of the first concept albums, having a similar theme, and dialog through the whole album. This was also the first album in which the Beach Boys didn't play instruments. The instrumentals were provided by session musicians The Wrecking Crew. Brian also included the super psychadelic aspects of "found sound" such as using pet noises (dogs barking), soda cans rattling, horns, theramins, bells, etc. The rest of the band didn't really agree with the direction that Brian was taking the band, but allowed him to create this album anyways, which didn't do as well as the rest of their stuff up to this point (probably because the public wanted more of the same surfer rock they came to love). The only real similarity that this album shares to any of their prior works is the harmonizing vocals. Overall, a weird album, but I can see how it was influential at the time. I am just not a Beach Boys fan. I thought my favourite song was going to be the well known "Wouldn't It Be Nice", but "Sloop John B" is a great song that I hadn't heard before. I probably won't seek this out in the future, but understand it's inclusion on the list. I have an overwhelming desire to go and buy a block of Cadbury’s after listening to opening track ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’. Oh, and the rest of ‘Pet Sounds’ is overrated, and I’ve listened to it many times over the years. It’s just the same couple of songs, rehashed over and over again for the length of an album. Taken individually the songs are all great, but listened to as a whole, things get repetitive. It’s still a good record, just not GOAT good.

A couple hits, but I'm not as much of a fan of their deep cuts. Their harmonies are great, but most of the album is a lot less energy than I would've expected from the Beach Boys. Still worth a listen.

I get that the have great voices, interesting arrangements, and thoughtful lyrics, but I just can't sign off on this being one of the great albums of all time. This was a band of talented musicians whom I FEEL were marketed into lameness

Its a vibe, made me feel happy. But I felt like I was listening to one long song. Maybe I was just spacing out but I didn't even tell when the album ended (I guess thats cuz spotify starts playing songs afterwards) Overall pretty alright but nothing I'd write home about

The Beach Boys have such a distinctive sound and I heard it throughout this album. I think the length of the album was perfect and each song was cute and fun and exactly what i expected.

Appreciate the craft. A little on the pop side for my tastes.

Two incredible songs surrounded by some pretty decent but ultimately forgettable material. The album lacks variety in a way that I know the Beach Boys are capable of, and the recording quality leaves some things to be desired.

Outside of the high notes, it was fine. The Beach Boys are probably just a little too anodyne for me. That being said, the highs are really great songs that I can't help but love anyway. Standouts: Wouldn't It Be Nice, I'm Waiting For The Day, Sloop John B, God Only Knows

Best Song: God Only Knows. The best use of layered vocals in the entire album. Worst Song: Pet Sounds. We're here for the vocals, not the rhythm jams. Overall: It get that it's an iconic pop album, but it just does the same thing over and over. Granted, it does that one thing really well, but I can't pretend that the lilting melodies and well-sung harmonies were exciting at the end of the album as at the beginning.

Definitely like the overall sound, didn’t blow me away though. Wouldn’t it be nice is obviously a banger though, phenomenal opener and then the rest is still really good, just has a hard time following that.

It was made to have no filler but it doesn't come across that way. It feels like the ramblings of a man who couldn't adapt to the evolving musical style of the late 60s. He's "the smartest guy in the room" and it really shows. Slow your genius roll, Brian Wilson.

A classic, and a lot of fun songs. But a little whinier than I was expecting

Classic for a reason, but not my oldies style for the most part.

Let's start with the obvious. The harmonies are deep and wonderful. The sound of this record is amazing. The various instruments and percussion sounds provide depth and marry with the harmonies to produce a really cohesive sounding record. A++++ sounding record. That being said, I've never really been too big on the Beach Boys. The songs don't really send me as compositions, the lyrics don't mean much to me, it doesn't change the way I see the world or my experience in it, and I'm just generally bored by the standard pop sensibilities of the whole thing. I struggle with the first couple of Beatles records in the same way. I mean, teenaged unrequited love songs in the verse1/verse2/chorus/verse3/chorus structure just only get me so far and that description could be used to describe 3/4 of this record. So, here, the appeal for me is the recording process. The harmonies are great because they don't settle for the standard 3 part harmonies of melody + down a third + up a fifth. Adding sevenths is such a simple idea chordally, but it really makes the whole thing shimmer when you use it correctly. The use of a really wide variety of instruments (both for melody and percussion) really fills out the sound. The effect of all this is that each song sounds really rich without sounding too over-produced. The focus was clearly on blending the sounds rather than separating them and I can really appreciate that. But I'm not in love with this record or the band like many are. I own this record, but I almost never play it.

Look.. I get it, I really do. I get why its on this list and I really appreciate what it and Brian Wilson have done for music as a whole. It did so much for the album as an artform, the studio as an instrument and for making music more progressive which we are still feeling to this day. But I just can't bring myself, after decacdes of revisiting it every now and then to say 'I like like Pet Sounds'. I think it just boils down to just not getting the style of surf/barouqe/doo-wop pop that the whole thing is based around. Its just so twee and kind of annoying. I think thats probably hightened by Tony Asher's involvement (I mean nothing against the guy but who hires a jingle writer to help them create their masterpiece). I also don't think Wilsons perfectionism when it came to vocal harmonies helps, its too perfect and uninteresting. I think it would have been a lot more interesting and fun if Brian Wilson could just get out of his own way occasionally and have some fun with it, let it be imprefect and strange and do diffrent styles. Also it sounds more Phill Spector than a lot of Phill Spector records despite him not being involved, which I don't think does it any favours because it places it firmly in a canon of music which it really doesn't belong in. The stand out track of course is "God only knows" which is a nigh on perfect little package of emotion which I don't think many people have surpassed. A technically great album which is held back by perfectionism and overly twee and sentimental songwriting.

Well, here's another where a second review by the same artist is prompting a nearly identical review from me. With all respect to those folks who admire this band, I fail to understand what it is that makes this group so beloved. The harmonies, for sure, are impressive. But it ends there for me. Lyrically, there are moments of cringe that pop up all over the place (I mean, is "Caroline No" a lament over a "once-cute" girl who has found feminism?). The adolescent themes just keep coming. And it seems like the height of laziness to fade out of 70% of the songs in the middle of a chorus, but that seems to be the formula of the moment on this one. Again (as in my last Beach Boys review) I'm hovering between a 2 and a 3. Last time I went with a two, so I guess I'll split the difference. But that's feeling generous...

I just wasn’t made for these tunes. I mean Wouldn’t it Be Nice and God Only Knows are really good songs. A number of other good songs on the album too. But I’ve never understood the reverence people (Scott et al) have for this. I remember it carrying some mythical weight when folks would talk about “Pet Sounds”. This is the before Internet times … and when I finally saw the album cover and heard it , I thought it was a joke. Like I really thought oh it must be some Sgt Pepper type of musical experience. Some nice songs with some guys playing with goats on the cover.

Beach boys' karakteristiske sound, rytme og tematikk er faktisk fengende, og man hører mer finesser etterhvert som man gir seg tid og lytter. Klassikerne God only knows, Wouldn't it be Nice og Sloop John viser hvorfor de har blitt kjent som ett av historiens største pop-band. Likte spesielt instrumentalen Pet Sounds - morsom og variert instrumentering, litt jazz-groove, og ikke minst en kjærkommen pause fra de kanskje litt ensformige BB-stemmene?

The opening chords for Wouldn't It Be Nice are joyous. The album then loses the urgency for me. I've never understood why Pet Sounds is held up in such high esteem. It's good, but not great. Maybe the context of listening to it for the first time in 1966 added to the elevation. The singles so strong leading you to expect the rest of the album will follow a similar path. The songs get lost in studio experimentation. Style, substance etc.

Okay, gotta say it; I don't get the hype. It's a good album! Every song sounds great, but the songs themselves just aren't that interesting, in lyrical or musical depth. I'm sure I'm missing something here, since this is supposed to be one of the best albums ever. Maybe it's the historical context? Cultural significance? Not sure, but I expected this album to be much, much better than it was.

Minus a couple songs (including God Only Knows) i was just waiting for the album to finish. I feel like it's a good album but the style of music just wasn't working for me for some reason. A little disappointing considering I have a couple friends that would live and die on this album.

Every year or so I try to "get" the Beach Boys and I never do. Is it just because this is what Boomers heard when they were in their tweens? Like it unlocked something for them? Great harmonies and I'm glad they've stopped singing about the fucking beach, but Jesus Christ they're still going with Sloops and all that shit...

Wouldn't it be nice is a song I've heard plenty of times before but all the rest were fresh to me. Unfortunately none of them had the sticking power in my brain besides that first one.

Heralded as the greatest pop album of all time by music nerds alike, The Beach Boys pushed the industry as a whole in terms of production and songwriting while still appealing to masses. Many will attribute this success to Brian Wilson, but I won't say anything with full certainty. The truth is that I think the Beach Boys are still a little corny, a little plain, a little passé. It does not stir any strong emotions in me other than "yes, this is nice". My favorite parts are the instrumentals, especially the title track Pet Sounds which plays around a lot for some interesting music.

This album tops the charts all the time as one of the greatest albums of all time. Really? Music hasn't surpassed this in nearly 60 years? It's fine. But to me the Beach Boys is about as vanilla as it gets.

I don't see how this compares to Sargent peppers! still a very enjoyable and happy album to make you feel like you're in a television advert

There are some great songs on here. God Only Knows has always been a favorite. I do get a little tired of Brian Wilson's whiny-sounding voice after a while. Sorry Brian, you are fabulous but I can only handle it for a while! I bought this album because it is so highly regarded and I was surprised to find I could not get into it that much. I am thinking that I would have viewed it differently if first heard the year it was released. It would have sounded quite different than the other pop music at the time. I can see how it became such an influential piece of work.

Okay. Lots of old classics that trigger nostalgia, but not really my favorite style of music.

Great return to form with the pivotal return and influence of John Frusciante being no coincidence in making this their greatest album to date. Full of recognisable tracks that combine to make one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion

I think Beach Boys is a little too saccharine and un-ironic for me. Didn’t make it through the album. Had to go listen to The Else by TMBG instead. I’ll try and give it another shot sometime when I’m in a more generous headspace.

I've never really got into The Beach Boys that much. There isn't a lot of variation between songs. Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows are classic songs and I liked Sloop John B. All in all it's a good album but there isn't enough variation to keep me interested for the entire album.

I know this is considered one of the greatest albums but try as I might it really doesn't resonate with me. I like the hits but it seems a bit samey in-between and although I appreciate how it's influenced others this is really about American history and i'm more interested in other genres (Punk and New Wave).

I've never understood all the fuss about the Beach Boys and in particular this album. 'God Only Knows' is a beautiful song but the rests are just OK. Nothing special.

Het is een klassieker, unaniem als meesterwerk bestempeld. En het zou schijnbaar zelfs de Beatles zo erg hebben gemotiveerd om met iets nog veel beters te komen. Wat het album St Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band opleverde. Dat dat vind ik inderdaad veel beter dan Pet Sounds. Beetje braaf allemaal.

Ik was dit gisteren gedurende de dag aan het luisteren met een half oor en dacht: 'Goh, wat een oud geluid voor The Pet Shop Boys, ik wist niet dat zij in de jaren zestig ook al actief waren....' Best mooi album overigens.

I have tried to get into this album many many times, I mean, it is the album that put the Beatles into SPLHCB way and one of the greatest songs and all that but I just can’t, it’s kinda silly to me, I love wouldn’t it be nice but I’m not very fond of the rest of the record, sounds very dated and yeah, silly to me. Really sorry about this one.

Međutim, nije mi nikad bio previše dobar, bio mi je mid, jer su ga dosta napuhali, a samim time moja su očekivanja bila mal jača od normalnog, a da ne govorim kako ne paše album na ovo hladno smrznuto vrijeme. Dobar album, ali nije u mojoj rotaciji.

11th October 2021 Listened while at the supermarket and cleaning up the flat before coming home for the week for the literature festival. I prefer the more upbeat beach boys and this wasn't what I was expecting of the full album but I can certainly understand how progressive it was.

Totally get why this is on the list, not really my thing. Grew up with dad playing it so I know heaps of the songs. Family just asked why I was playing the Cadbury song. Sigh. God Only Knows is a work of genius.

Strong start to the album with some of the more recognizable songs, followed up with a surprisingly more orchestral, slow, and melodious ending.

I think it's overrated, to be honest. Wouldn't It Be Nice is a phenomenal opener, but I don't think the rest of the album lives up to the tone it sets. Not to say I didn't love the songs I saved and overall had a very enjoyable listening experience, but I don't feel like it endures in the way that other monumental albums in this list do. Instrumentation and harmonies are beautiful, but the lyrics are so damn flat sometimes. Not gonna let the hype surrounding this one pull it up Saved: Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B, God Only Knows*

So, this is the definitive pop album of all time? There are clearly the bangers: sloop john b, wouldn't it be nice and god only knows that stand out. but honestly, that's really it. everything else seems nice, but not catchy. it's the equivalent if it was a song of verses, but no chorus. it sounds nice, but it doesn't really end up being very catchy for me.

Really good harmonies. I also like the percussion. I can't really see myself going to listen to anything again, except for God Only Knows, that song is amazing. Here Today is also good, I love its use of brass. Overall good album.

I LOVE the orchestra in this song. 5) I'm Waiting for the Day: Upbeat!! Catchy beat and breakdown. Orchestra bangs again at the end! LOVE THE ENDING OF THIS SONG. 6) Let's Go Away For A While: Okay the orchestra up to this point has been captivating me. God the instrumentals on this one is awesome! THE PIZZICATO!!! I'm not in love with this album like a lot of people are. I think its fairly interesting but more so as a point in music history as opposed to good in and of itself

Overall a weird album. Didn’t love most of the songs. Feels like everything’s been slowed down, like maybe this is what the world feels like when you’re on tranquilizers (which I suppose they were when they recorded this).

Listened to this album for the first time a few years ago and loved it. It's still a joy to hear.

it's a solid record with interesting sounds, particularly for it's time, but the sound just doesn't speak to me like other sounds do. this is perhaps due to it having been incorporated into so many other works which were inspired by it that i've heard over the years that it's brilliance is sort of lost on me. i got dylan's blonde on blonde the day before this one and i gave it a 4/5; i liked listening to blonde on blonde at least a full star more than pet sounds, thus the 3/5. favorite track: Hold on to your ego.

I can appreciate the production and how it influenced a lot of artists I love, but the Beach Boys just don't do it for me.

Like other Beach Boys albums I struggle to understand why it is quite so highly regarded. There are some really strong tracks on here without doubt but there are others I’ll want to skip. Overall a good album that I can enjoy and appreciate but not an album that I can love.

Yes yes god only knows is a beautiful song, yes it has some lovely moments but this album is most certainly over rated.

Sacrilege alert, but I just don't like The Beach Boys at all. It all sounds so cheesy to me. I get the music production and "wall of sound" history of the album, and for what it's doing in 1968 it's quite forward but... as a listening piece it does absolutely nothing for me. I would give it a 3* just for the techniques heh...

A side clearly sappy and for the gals, pretty antiquated stuff that fuels the whole nostalgia psychosis.

Obviously this album contains 2 of what are widely regarded as some of the best songs ever (and for god only knows, i’d agree). However, the rest of the album feels like padding. with 2026 ears nothing much else stands out. I did appreciate I just wasnt made for these times. Its impressive that a song from 60 years ago is still deeply relatable - and as someone who probably has very little in common with men from 60s California.

I will never understand the appeal of the Beach Boys or how they are ever in the discussion of being the best American band ever. They made campy surf rock then pivoted to cheesy pop that sounded like it belonged on the oldies station immediately upon release. After Pet Sounds they made disjointed attempts to latch on to whatever the sound of the season was for Friends and Surf’s Up. Pet Sounds has some moments of harmonious bliss and small snippets where the music veered into interesting, but it swerves back into boring quickly. The songwriting is often lauded as remarkable here but I find it embarrassingly childlike lyrically. The multiple layers of sound end up flattening the tracks. Less could have definitely been more here.

There's a couple songs I enjoyed here but this is overall not a sound that I gravitate towards all that much. But as is the case with the older albums, I'm sure this sounded a lot cooler at the time of release. 2/5

I know this album is supposed to be a masterpiece--and I respect the opinions of those who think it is--but I just don't get it, you guys. I've tried to listen to it a bunch of times and it just does nothing for me. I don't know what to say.
