Reviews (page 3 of 14)
I get it. This lives up to the hype. I was ready to hate on it, because Kanye is a garbage person, and I always kind of thought that. But as a work of art, I can't deny how fantastic this album is.
4,6 Highlights: Monster, Hell of a Life
We all miss the old Kanye
"Until it's Vegas everywhere we are." We've arrived and it sucks!
I haven't listened to this in full this decade but I've listened to it overall more times than I can remember. I know it too well and it is too formative for me not to have a place in my heart for it.
I forgot how many bangers are on this album. I miss the old Kanye
Always a good listen!
Kanye’s masterpiece. It’s a shame that listening still supports the asshole though. Man was a genius to start out his career. Banger after banger with no skips Fave songs: Devil in a new Dress, Runaway
Please understand this is not an endorsement of this man, but it can’t be denied how impactful he was for a long time and especially on this record, his artistic peak imo.
Tough review. Love this album. So many different great beats and themes but Kanye has tainted listening to it.
The best Kanye album and it’s not even particularly close. The opening 6 songs is one of the craziest sequences I’ve heard. The back half can’t possibly live up to the first but it doesn’t let up much. Combined with Yeezus this gave him so much more patience and freedom than artists usually get. Unfortunately he squandered it but we did get this masterpiece.
A prime case study in separating art from the artist. This may be the best hip hop album ever made. The instrumentation is incredible, from the guitar solo in “Devil in a new dress” to the orchestral interpretation and horns parts on “all of the lights” Kanye’s strengths as an arranger and ring master are clear throughout this whole album. He also gets career defining verses out of Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj and even has some solid social commentary, however crude. I hadn’t heard “runaway” in a while and it really is sublime. What an absolute tragedy that he became a nazi.
MBDTF is a vapid masterpiece. What do I mean by that? Well sonically, production-wise, and musically it hits like a truck with some of Kanye's best compositional work ever. But lyrically and thematically, this album captures a man going through the motions of pretending to be introspective and going through the motions of reckoning with his soul but I frankly don't buy it. The album's centerpiece "Runaway" shows Kanye seemingly interrogate his own asshole nature but where many find it to be a raw and vulnerable song, I hear nothing but defensiveness and bitter sarcasm. The real low light of the album has to be the outro to "Blame Game" which, after a song which engages in a lengthy examination of a troubled relationship disintegrating, descends into a minute long sex joke about how Kanye West is the best lover ever which completely undercuts the the rest of the song. And because a lot of the album plays at being emotionally deep while not meaning, my favorite songs on the album tend to be the ones that engage with Ye's personal life the least. "All of the Lights" and "Lost in the Woods" show just how good the music itself is without subjecting me to feigned vulnerability. That said, some tracks are so strong that even when they intersect with Kanye's self-aggrandizing disingenuousness, I still can't deny how good they are as songs. Such is the case with tracks like "POWER" and "Monster." Overall, this is a frustrating album to revisit. I think it's still a 5 star album on a musical level but it's undeniable that West's descent into madness has laid bare that any seeming introspectiveness here was just a pose. I guess what I'm saying is that I can envision a world in the near future where I do find this to be a 4 star album.
I know that for many it will be necessary to ignore the Kanye we know now in order to listen to this, but I assure you it's worth it.
Complicated one this given the artist’s recent opinions and controversy. Do I like Ye as a person? Absolutely not. Is this record good? Yes, it is phenomenal. One of the best in the genre since the turn of the century. It’s the classic debate of the artist vs. the art they create. Given the intention behind this list and musical journey, of exploring these sounds and judging just the music I feel compelled to give this a 5. That being said don’t get it twisted, fuck Kanye the person,at least as of this moment, fuck fascism, and fuck Nazi’s.
One of my favorite Hip Hop albums of all time. Kanye’s BS aside. Brilliant record.
I really have to separate the art from the artist on this one, but purely from a musical standpoint, this album is great. Song after song, hit after hit, all the little melodies that have been stuck in my head with no context for years, this album will probably go into a semi-regular rotation.
Don’t like what the guy became, but man this is a good album.
this SUCKS to admit😭 but i mean this is a fucking incredible album
You probably almost always put this in your pantheon of greatest rap albums of all time. The level of production on this album is truly unmatched for the time and feels like it picks up the torch from Dr Dre a decade prior. I know that he’s incredibly problematic but there are a lot of people on this list just like Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, the list goes on for a long time. I think you really have to judge the art here not the artist.
10/10 A personal favorite. It's themes, guest artists, composition, and richness is umatched. when I say rich, I also mean full. great listen.
Disregarding today’s Kanye this is one of the greatest albums of all time. No skips, all songs have a fresh sound. I would listen to this anytime
Alright alright AS AN ALBUM, it’s one of my favorites ever. I am rating the ALBUM.
Such a classic
10/10 LO AMO
Kanye’s magnum opus, a heartfelt apology to the world.
Despite him being kind of a bad dude this album is pretty phenomenal. Very dark and evocative.
Again, from a purely musical perspective, this is an excellent album
Where are my shutter shades
Haha, was just listening to this one the day before this appeared in my list! Not that it'll stop me from listening again. I had an ex-girlfriend who used to joke that whenever I got drunk I always started ranting about how "no matter what you think about his politics, if you don't think Kanye's one of the greatest producers of all time I just cannot respect you". I do still think this is true, to be honest. And just listen to it here on MBDTF - it's so creative, so rich, so unabashedly itself. Yeezy's a pretty good rapper, and he's not known for breaking any boundaries lyrically like his more serious contemporaries, but it's in his ear for a hook that he's an absolutely one-in-a-generation maniac. There's a fine line between genius and madness, they say. Almost every track on this is a fire classic for a reason. Blame Game, with that (dodgily) lifted Aphex sample is a beautiful track of some serious vulnerability somewhat marred by a goofy Chris Rock comedy skit for an outro, but damn if it isn't one of the greatest to ever do it. I don't care what people say, it's the best track off the album. POWER is bombastic, and the King Crimson sample shows Ye's not afraid to dip into any genre or era. Hell Of A Life, with that awesome distorted lead and Ye's autotuned lyrics over that classic Black Sabbath melody is auditory umami. And the features - where to begin? Pretty much everybody lending their voice over the album does a great job. The album feels full of life, suitably epic, evergreen. Obviously the elephant in the room is Kanye's ongoing stints of bipolar-induced hatred. It makes this a troubling one to listen back to, obviously. I think we all miss the old Kanye. Fav tracks: Blame Game, POWER, Monster Hell Of A Life
Perfect Kanye album, every feature delivered, zero notes, changed the hip hop landscape permanently.
I love this album so much and I hate Kanye so much. Giving the album 5 stars and Kanye 0 stars.
I gave Thriller a 5, I gave Astral Weeks a 4, I gave Led Zeppelin IV a 5, I gave domestic abuser John Lennon plenty of good ratings, I’ve set a precedent of separating the art from the artist. This dude’s an asshole *and* he made a perfect album.
To me this is peak Kanye, the absolute best of his work, theres so many great things happening in this album I can’t cover all of them. Things I will note in this review is the great mix between the ‘musical art’ and ‘music to listen to’, these two types of music when balanced right in an album is what makes it great to me. Next the instrumentals, it’s got classical instruments and modern electrical sounds the pairing of these again, fantastic. There is a great range of moods and vibes from the songs, the lyrics all providing something of substance and sounding poetic. Some great collaborations invited into this album creating something special. I think what this album and many other great Kanye songs has this lifting and emotional connecting sound to it; it’s sort of hard to describe but it just a feeling. As much as I do love this album some small critics I would make is I feel like at certain parts the outro electronic soundscapes go on for a little bit too long. Overall, I think this is incredibly well deserved to be on this list and even if you don’t listen to the whole album some songs on here you should listen to. These standout songs are ‘Gorgeous’ ‘POWER’ ‘Runaway’ and ‘Devil in a new dress’. With Kanye you have to separate the art from the artist, saying that I do miss the old Kanye.
Damn. April 2026 is hardly the moment to discover how good Kanye West is! *laughing face emoji*
(Den andre store milepælen var In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
Fra flotte ballader som "Runaway", "Lost in the World" og "Blame Game" til episke "All of the Lights", dansbare "Lost in the World" og lofi-låta "Gorgeous" treffer så jævlig.
It’s one of my all time favorite albums and one of the hip hop albums that expanded my appreciation of the genre as a whole. Is it perfect start to finish? No (thanks Jay-Z). But it’s a hell of a journey through Kanye’s psychology at the time, swinging between triumphant joy and debilitating depression with some brief spurts of comic relief as he explores different relationships falling apart. Best moments: The one-liners on Gorgeous, the All Of The Lights interlude into the opening hook, Devil In A New Dress (especially Rick Ross), Blame Game song, “Yeezy reupholstered my pussy” Worst moments: Monster, any Jay-Z verse, Who Will Survive In America being a different track than Lost in the World
Legend album
Yknow sure hes an awful person and a racist(race traitor) and stupid as a bag of rocks and sexist and a total piece of shit and garbage come to life as a human being and hangs out with trash celebrities and is actually a fucking nazi(dw he said sowwy) but damn can Kanye make a fucking album.
Oh god here we go. Right off the bat, I couldn't even play this album on Spotify because I had anything with Kanye blocked. Now, this is 2010 Kanye, so he wasn't full blown off his meds insane, but it was the start of it. He disappeared after grabbing the mic from Taylor Swift at the MTV Music Video Awards to declare that he thought Beyonce should have won. He then recorded this album with a large collaborative team in secret. It absolutely blew up and he's been downhill mentally since. Kanye had such a great team with him for this album and they were able to produce a lot of absolute gems. All of the Lights is an incredible song about balancing stardom and your regular life, especially if you're struggling. I love the connection with "all of the lights" includes ALL of them. Cop lights, flashlights, spotlights. Apparently the Monster music video was banned portraying violence against women. I mean the song is basically yeah, they all know they're pieces of shit and it plays on the horror movie theme. It doesn't show any of them being beat or murdered. Usually hip hop videos have women similarly dressed twerking and dancing, now they're just sitting still and suddenly it's sexist? I dunno, I think it was fine. Runaway. I mean come on if this song doesn't have one of the most iconic intros. And the song is just incredibly sad. Just the tragedy of being suck in a toxic, abusive relationship but also feeling like you can't leave for whatever reason. Trapped by the money or power or whatever. In this case the abuser is straight up telling you, I know it's my fault and you need to runaway from me.....but they're still trapped. It's hard to understate the degree of collaboration that this album went through. A "who's who" of artists working to it and sharing ideas and the results are obvious. Musically the tracks are incredibly done and incorporate many different genres. Lyrically, some tracks are weak, but the messaging in the tracks is deep and poignant at times. Lost In the World - here's your dance track that you were upset about having to make in So Appalled. Honestly the song is so sick though. Super tribal with heavy drum and bass. This track is so underrated. It's easy to dismiss Kanye for who he has become, an actual insane person, but back when he was on his meds and his mental illness was somewhat contained, he was was able to produce incredible music and we only got brief glimpses of his crazy. But credit where it's due, it's a great album.
Ye sucks. let's be clear. So does MJ. but he's the greatest musical artist of the last 20+ years? it's no competition and MBDTF is a masterpiece. But yes, fuck him as a person
Man, I miss the old Kanye.
Not kanyes best album but in the mount rushmore of albums. This defined so mutch music afterwards. This is the album from which everything went wakky. Its one of the best produced albums ever and is why kanye is a generational artist if you like it or not. Musicwise he is undeniably amazing
EPICIDAD
All of Kanye's problematic behavior aside, this album really is a masterpiece. It's bombastic and dramatic in all the right ways. It really pushes the envelope on what hip hop can be. Plus the hits are absolute bangers. Overall- great album not without its flaws. 4.5/5, but worth the upgrade to a 5
I just wanted to talk about one track because it captures what makes this album brilliant to me. Devil in a new dress is obviously about a breakdown in a relationship but its absolutely dripping in ego and braggadocio. Kanye is using all these religious metaphors to cast himself as this flawed hero but it is clear he is just hiding behind all of this because the whole thing feels like a defiant 'sorry not sorry'. The clever thing though is that haunting sample looping behind it. It's a sample of Smokey Robinson singing 'Will you still love me tomorrow' pitched up in the old school Kanye style. All the time Kanye is flexing and playing the joker there is the soulful plea in the background exploring Kanye's vulnerability and insecurity, never really knowing if the love (or lust) is real and desperately wondering if it will still be there when the lights come on. It's a great one-two that is easy to miss and this album is full of moments like this. Then Rick Ross shows up, gets his dick out and pisses on everything in the most glorious way possible. A perfect reminder to never take any of this seriously.
Feel 8/10: Every song has great beats. Some songs drag but it works Length 7/10: Like stated, some songs drag Musicality 9/10: Once again, Kanye knows music perfectly. The Strings and piano Flow 8/10: Most songs blend very well Lyrics 9.5/10: Almost perfect lyrics. Ye knows ball Overall 9/10: One of my personal favorites
Despite who Kanye is now, this is a classic
Super Dope
Classic
Cult Classic
Good album, but a horrible person.
Buen disco variado
Expected a solid 4 but was pleasantly surprised
Hopefully still allowed to like this album
Fav songs: all of the lights, gorgeous, runaway
10/10 album
Really sucks that he’s a nazi now. Growing up in a 98% white rural community I would listen to this while mowing my lawn. Aside from elevating hip hop classic music, it also introduced me to racial politics I was fully unaware of. 2010 Kanye, may have been an asshole, but he at least had a sense of humor and if you bother to listen to the whole record comes off as maybe a flawed narrator, but surprisingly self aware. Everyone from jay z to bon iver to Elton John is featured.
I’ve had three hip hop albums in four days and, to my astonishment, this was head and shoulders above the others. I think the guy is a complete asshat but damn could he put together a richly layered track. And not once but every time. I added “Runaway” to my Generator playlist.
Good
This is basically an avengers/who's who of all of the best artists in 2010 entering a world that Kanye built to lament on becoming famous. His vision and message is clear and everything is carefully thought out. It's everything I love about music. Hardly have any notes. It's hard to critique objectively but I tried! There are no skips and the album holds up. He's an awful dude but I understand why his stans refuse to let him go. There's always a chance you might get something like this. He holds the supply. Highlights: Runaway, Dark Fantasy, Monster
Undisputed classic
A very nostalgic album for me, and besides everything that kanye has done and become all these past years, this album still is a legendary moment in hip-hop modern history
An excellent classic, but this level of quality doesn't exist anymore these days. What a shame.
The switch from the all of the lights interlude to the actual song goes so hard
So good not even funny
not his greatest one but still great
HALLELUJAH A RAP ALBUM! Wish this mf wasn’t such a loser and got the help he needed
beautiful mr west
I want to hate it because he sucks as a human, but it hits. 5/5
why are such a bitch Kanye cause fucking slaps😭
Considering all of the obviously awful stuff out of Kanye in recent years, this is actually a jolting listen - it's so much better than anything he's done post Life of Pablo. Take 'Gorgeous' - 'Jerome gets more time than Brandon' is a sharper, funnier, far better way of getting to the point he spends three minutes noodling around on 'Jail' from his more recent work. 'Dark Fantasy' a brilliant opener and one I'd forgot about. The bangers are absolute bangers, the features incredible - the sheer contempt that Pusha T gets across in 'Runway' blows me away every time, the 'Monster' verses, etc. It sits alongside very few albums I've ever listened to that just work as a cohesive piece of art.
This pains me - 5 stars
Damn, its hard to listen to this and not get upset at what Kanye has turned into. He really pours it on with this whole album, yes, he's an incredibly egotistical dickhead, but man he earns his accolades. You can hear the meticulous detail he put into the whole project, it really was the next level of his artistry, like he broke through the already impossible high ceiling he was at. Great tracks one after another, featured artists are utilized perfectly. As soon as All of the Lights started, boom, I was instantly brought back to the first time I heard it. What I really love here is how well this whole album flows together, cohesive to a T. One issue, and this is 100 percent personal and I'm sure I'll catch hell for it, but I could never stand Runaway, it just hits the part of my brain that makes it unlistenable to me. pretty easy 5 though!
Kanye’s magnum opus. Not his best album but certainly the one he put EVERYTHING he had into it. If anyone needs an example of music as capital “A” art this is it. Just a beautiful, tragic, heartbreaking and raw look at fame, the life that comes with it and who a person can become when consumed by it. The production is immaculate, Kanye’s got some really funny bars and every guest brings their A game. It sucks who Kanye became but weirdly you can see this album as a crossroads for him. The beginning of him giving into his darkest desires and worst tendencies. Hang this shit in the fucking Louvre
Kanye bad. This album good.
The last of the great Kanye West albums in my humble opinion. I personally never cared for 'Yeezus' or everything else that followed, but I'm getting off topic. Reading about the production and recording process here isn't surprising, given the artistry of Kanye West. He really set out to make this his magnum opus, pulling in pretty much anyone in the music industry that you can think of at the time (Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, and COUNTLESS others...) It's all very grandiose, but doesn't really lose its way or alienate the listener. I mean, Kanye is the modern poster boy for "rockstar with an inflated ego", but he totally leans into his character and looks inward here. Lest I forget to mention the meticulous production and tasteful sample work all throughout (the album notably ending with samples from Gil Scott-Heron's always relevant "Comment #1") I may have a few nits to pick with some lyrical choices as well as that odd skit from Chris Rock, but this really is Kanye's magnum opus in my eyes. Remember when Kanye's most controversial moments were publicly declaring that George Bush hated black people and interrupting the VMAs? Funny looking back...
Say what you rightfully will about the man, but back in the day Kanye made some real masterpieces. This album in particular is what got me not only into rap but listening to music seriously in general, listening to albums in full and engaging with them in a meaningful way. A part of me wishes somebody else's album did that for me but here we are. I miss the old Kanye.
Best Song: Runaway I didn't want to like this because Kanye is, well, batshit crazy. But, sadly I just couldn't do it. This is a great album and deserves the praise that it gets. There are great tracks on here including Runaway (my personal favorite), Hell of a Life, and Monster. Maybe Kanye's next album I can hate, here's to hoping. 5/5.
Listened to this too much, I already know my rating.
It was very, very well put together - lyrics were a bit much in places, but I feel that was the point. I was conflicted as he's a bit of a strange chap in recent years, but rating this album it is a 5.
One of my all time faves
Poor human being, but man does he make some outstanding music. One of my favorite rap albums of all time. I think Gorgeous might be a perfect song.
5/5 - no notes.
it’s too bad kanye is such a piece of shit because this album is one of the best hip hop albums ever made.
So well produced. Everything sounds amazing.
This was an amazing listen. Loved it. Great grooves, very versatile. I even love all the featured artists. Really cool record.
One of my personal all time favorites. Kanye really had the Avengers on this album and some of the most iconic songs on this album. Amazing production from Mike Dean and an all time classic in hip hop and music in general
wait no!! i hate kanye…and nicki min. but they did kinda eat on multiple songs though out this album. will continue to listen in secrecy
Man, this was great start to finish
One of the greatest hip-hop albums of all-time. The incredible maximalist production with great samples and features. So many bangers, and incredible lyricism and themes. Yes, Kanye West is a terrible person. You should be able to accept that current Kanye West is bad, while still appreciating this album as an absolute landmark in hip-hop.
Nazist der laver god musik. You just liked one of hitlers paintings moment.
I mean, its a great album and I've heard it a few times over the last few years, but you know.
Its kanye vro, not his best but even dis is peak
I dont even think this is his best album but its very influential, creative, and has some of the best hip hop records in Runaway and Devil in a New Dress so it's hard not to give it 5 stars
Maybe I'm being too naive, but I do believe that he can still redeem himself. He recently explained his medical condition and apologized. I hope he means it and he actually has a desire to change. I just want to listen to his albums again and not feel guilty while doing it. His discography is phenomenal, but I can't listen to his songs and not think about who he has become. So I'm hoping he's going to take action, because that's the most important aspect of changing, not just writing sorry. That's enough Mr West, please no more today...
The most 5/5 album ever from the most 0/5 person ever.
Kanye West went in Alex Jones's show info wars and said the following: "Every human being has something of value that they brought to the table. Especially Hitler." It's the 'especially' that hits the ear hard there. It's not 'even Hitler', we could brush that off as some kind of see the humanity in everyone feel-goodery. But it was especially. As in Hitler brought more value to the table than your average person. It's very comically worded, and it would be hilarious of it wasn't so awful. But I'm not going to kid myself, Kanye's first few albums, culminating with this one are masterpieces. He lets talented people sing and rap on this one. He samples actual music and melody. He uses a full vocabulary to craft his lyrics. It's not only great in isolation, it's genuinely astonishing to listen to how inventive, layered and creative this is compared to his new music. Like Michael Jackson or Frank Sinatra before him, this is an amazing album by a genuinely awful person. He has a song called 'Heil Hitler' now as well just in case you're not convinced
great Album!
To me, this is an undeniably exceptional album, the production is masterful and innovative and I would 100% come back to it. I surprisingly only knew 2 of the songs before and while I'd still say they're my favourites (Power and Runaway) I don't think there were any letdowns or dull moments throughout.
Can I give this the five stars it deserves after his full-page apology?
No skips incredible rap album kanye’s magnum opus
While not his best album, his genius is on full display. It is a joy beginning to end.
Men gillar även Power, All of the lights, Blame Game.
Absolutely amazing - did not realize how bombastic this whole album was and just an experience. Makes you miss the old Kanye,
Well, should've expected that Kanye would show up at some point. I've always tried to keep songs separate from the musician, but Kanye kept being such a fucking asshole that I couldn't take it anymore and removed all of his songs from my playlists. Which is a shame, because listening back to this album reminded me how much I really liked his music. Hopefully he's finally getting the name he needs, but knowing Kanye's previous attempts, it's fully possible that he'll decide to double down again.
Man if only he hadn't lost his mind after this one
We had it good back when Kanye was on his meds.
this is unfortunately a 5.
Ohh definitely a case of separating the art from the artist. Clearly Kanye/ye is a very disturbed person and not well, but wow this album, which I remember had all the plaudits at the time but I kind of ignored, is 21st century hip hop at its peak. The abomination of Obamas nation has produced this dark and twisted fantasy classic. Not sure I like Blame Game, needlessly gratuitous but Who Will Survive in America is 21st century Gill Scott Hetron 5 out of 5 for me.
10/10 Favorites: Dark Fantasy POWER All Of The Lights Monster Devil In A New Dress Runaway
There really isnt much left to say about this album. Its amazing and a major blueprint for the 2010s soundscape. The features blend the 00s into the 10s mega stars in a way only Kanye could have curated. The production is incredible with a wide range of samples and original compositions interwoven in a masterclass of Hip-Hop. I think its funny the global reviews are like "Sometimes you gotta separate the artist from the art to enjoy something" and its like ???? Not with Kanye. This is his brain and he has clearly shown us how beautiful, dark and twisted the entire thing is. Favorite Verse: Rick Ross Devil in a New Dress Favorite Bar: "If God had an iPod I'd be on his playlist" Favorite Songs: Gorgeous, Runaway, Devil in a New Dress Extra Credit for people in the global reviews: Runaway Movie (Weird movie Kanye did for this album): youtube.com/watch?v=Jg5wkZ-dJXA Dissect Podcast breaking down every single second of this album: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1uTOUY3wPxWAOCoOEuw9nF?si=fblAvfIQQxSRzLy0w0FfXA
I was never a Kanye fan til getting absolutely blown away by this album. Extremely disappointed in his current trajectory.
He was so talented
bangerrrr KANYEEE IS THE GOAAAAAT
This album highlights how talented west is. I don’t often listen to Kanye, probably he’s more known songs but there is some gems in this.
a perfect album this and Late Registration changed my life. it goes downhill from here (yeezus is good tho)
unfortunately, a perfect album
Oh boy. I don't know if I've ever listened to a Kanye album. I don't know how to feel about this. I mean he's obviously an incredibly talented artist but the nazi shit is something else. This is truly an amazing album however. I've heard snippets here and there but the sounds and songs are so cohesive yet varied it's very good. Fuck why'd he have to be a nazi man. It's crazy how interwoven Black liberation is to all his music and how he constantly references oppression under white people then turned around and started doing the same thing. I can't presume to know what actually happened there but he needed some actual support with his mental health bruh. Like the strings he's putting in some the track? This actually was groundbreaking. I cant believe he was such a dickhead. The things he's doing in this album for it to go so mainstream is kinda crazy. I can't say I'm too knowledgeable about the rap scene of the 2000s or of ever but this feels very modern in the 2020s so it must've been trailblazing back then. I mean fuck Nicki too, and Jay-Z, I don't know anything about Rick Ross but she's a Trumpie and he cheated on Beyoncé. Whole album full of cunts. It sucks they're so talented. Bon Iver is on this album?? He's actually everywhere. What is this guy up to bruh. This is a spectacular album unfortunately. Favourite: Lost In The World Least favourite: So Appalled
I've avoided Kanye, but this is great Favs: "Dark Fantasy," "Lost In The World," and "Who Will Survive In America"
My memory of this when I got it was that I found it a bit disappointing. Clearly that was crazy. Even knowing what was to come, it's hard to look back and say this is anything other than a masterpiece. I can understand people struggling to listen to it knowing where he is now, but musically this is still great
Good album, terrible person
Greatest album of all time, not even close, worst song is a bonafied 8/10. Album has deep meaning, radio hits, bangers, and an all time only-Kanye-could-do song in Devil in a new Dress. Overall, this album is one word; PERFECT
awesome
Classic
Classic
I have a friend who has very similar music taste to me. We became friends because of a shared obsession with Radiohead, we were into 60s and 70s rock, folk and the alt rock scene mostly, and over the years he introduced me to some of my favourite bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Talking Heads. I'd usually pay attention to music that he'd recommend. So, I was quite surprised when he suddenly turned into a hip-hop fan, harping on about Kanye. We were in a late-night casino's smoking area, on a Christmas night out back in 2011, when my friend got into a rap battle with a group of strangers, winning hands-down by rapping the entire song of "Power" perfectly. I was confused. This was Kanye, the guy who jumped onstage at the MTV awards, drunkenly shouting about Beyonce in front of a bemused Taylor Swift. The guy who did that awful "Jesus Walked" song, and destroyed a classic Daft Punk song. He wasn't on my radar at all, he just seemed like another vapid rapper in the vacuous pop music scene. But hey, I could have missed out on Talking Heads if I hadn't listened to my friend back in the day, so I had to see what the big deal was. It didn't take long for it to click. I think what's fascinating about Kanye is this duality of being that he exists in. He is exactly what I mentioned earlier on: vacuous, materialistic, and narcissistic. But also, completely self-aware, honest, and analytical. He raps about his pitfalls and shortcomings in a shockingly honest and open way, without ever vilifying himself fully. It's weirdly vulnerable, but also boastful. His lyrics are like a Freudian hypothesis on narcissism, told by an unapologetic narcissist. It's honesty in its purest and most shocking form, and its amazing. On top of all of that, Kanye is a creative musical genius. As a producer, he is one of the all-time best. He collects, curates and transforms the music and ideas of others into something completely new, in a similar way to sampling legends like Liam Howlett of The Prodigy, or the Beastie Boys. The musical influences that lay the backbone of this album are as varied as they come, but Kanye morphs even the best-known sample into something completely new every single time. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy plays out like a hip-hop opera, a "hip-hopera" if you will (thank you very much, please hold your applause until the end). Starting off with a snarling recital of Roald Dahl's "Cinderella", surrounded by autotuned gospel choirs, opening track "Dark Fantasy" sets things in motion with refrains of "Can we get much higher?" Yes, we can. This is only the beginning. The album is made up of moments. It's a kaleidoscope of epic moment after epic moment. The gorgeous orchestration and piano of the intro to "All of the Lights" breaking into frenzied horn samples; the fuzz tone of "Hell of a Life" paying homage to Sabbath's "Iron Man"; "Blame Game" bringing Aphex Twin to the masses. And, of course, "POWER". King Crimson reimagined with tribal chanting, as Kanye muses on the pitfalls of fame, with the iconic line "No one man should have all that power". "Runaway" is the highlight of the album. It's the climax of the hip-hopera. It's also the one song everyone can play on piano. From such an intentionally simple riff to what it builds up to, musically, it's a work of art. Add in Kanye's confessional lyricism on top of that, which starts off as an apology and ends up as a warning ("Run away fast as you can"). Then all language collapses into sound with that amazing extended coda at the end of the song where the vocoder takes over. It's mesmerising. This is the song that changed my mind about autotune, when I heard how it could actually be used creatively. Kanye is an enigma. Let's not even get into the spiral that he's gone down in recent years, except to say that the guy clearly needs help, but is too removed from reality by fame to get the intervention that he needs. Fame can do a number on you, especially if you're already in a fragile mental state. This album came out of a time when he removed himself from that world for a period of deep reflection and creativity. It's a capsule of unapologetic, brutal honesty. A rare moment of vulnerability in hip-hop. A masterpiece. So yeah, I guess my friend was onto something.
Baby's first hip-hop album. It was certainly the first hip-hop album I ever fell in love with, back when the genre had very little appeal to me. This felt like a grand display of talent, with so many easily digestible, melodic beats and earwormy choruses and hooks for days. It felt, and still sort of feels, larger than life in that sense. Like a pivotal moment and a shift for not only hip-hop, but popular culture as well. Because who was more "pop culture" than Kanye West himself in the late 2000s? Only this guy can assemble dozens of features, including Drake, who has a very faint line, for one single song on this album. That song, 'All Of The Lights', alone has Elton John, Rihanna, Fergie, and Kid Cudi. You also have Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver, Pusha T, various Wu-Tang members, and John Legend on this album; it's quite frankly ridiculous that this album turned out as well as it did. Not really consistent, given just how huge the "cast" is, but consistently good, I'd still say. While I have sort of fallen out of love with a good chunk of MBDTF over the years, the highlights here are still in constant rotation. I mentioned 'All Of The Lights' being this Avengers-level gathering of pop icons into one song, but 'I'm So Appalled' felt almost like the hip-hop-specific version of that. I just love the ominous and haunting atmosphere of this posse cut, something this album really benefits from. The other posse cut, 'Monster', is almost on the same level, I'd say, though I've never been a huge fan of Jay-Z's verse on that song. 'Devil In A New Dress' is also one I keep coming back to, such an incredibly well-chopped instrumental paired with that iconic soaring Mike Dean guitar solo. 'Lost In the World' is super nostalgic to me. I remember listening to this one song non-stop on my train rides back home from university, late at night. This album and Kanye's discography in general really soundtracked my first semester in university, when I had to commute for 2 hours almost every day. I associate this album with that time in my life. Anyways, there's also 'Runaway', which is easily the best song on this album, a lengthy, ambitious cut detailing an egomaniac breaking himself down all-while managing to (somehow) not sound like an asshole doing it. It's effective, and it's catchy, and it's beautiful. Can't really, in good faith, give this anything lower than a 5-star. I've fallen off the deep end with Kanye's music in the past few years; it just doesn't hit like it used to. I attribute that mainly to how much of a shitty person he's become, seeing as how Kanye's music is so tightly coupled with Kanye West the person. But this is one of the most important albums to me as a music fan, and also to music and hip-hop in general. And it still sounds fresh to this day, with any "dating" qualities (like the tacky auto-tune usage and, well, Fergie) coming off as charming more than anything. Classic album.
not even glaze
i'm feeling a light to decent 6 on this thing but that's just my opinion
Amazing. Great sound, lyrics, loved this one
We goon to kanye
One of his most complete albums before he lost his mind. This was made a little after what most refer to as "old Kanye" albums, but this may be better.
I mean...
Lush is the word that comes to mind when I think of this album. Production-wise, it's Kanye's finest work, with so many creative samples, pulling from 70s funk, 60s psych rock, R&B, pop, indie folk. Basically whatever he could get his hands on. It's just a classic, sprawling, indulgent, super fun listen for hip hop fans, despite the insane narcissist that Kanye is now and really always has been.
GOAT
Greatest hip hop album of all time
Spin a teddy pendergrass vinyl as my j burns. FIVE
Ye's magnum Opus. One of the best rap album. Artistically brilliant.
#222/1001. About 5th through this list, and a thing I've been telling everyone when the 1001 project is mentioned, is that the rnb and hiphop albums have been the best positive new surprises for me. I don't know the genres too well, but almost everything that has been included I've come across so far puts all of the 70s blues / prog rock, 80s new wave (although I've gotten weird albums from that excellent era so far), 90s indie or 00s onwards rock/pop, not to mention quite a few overrated classics to shame. This seems to be yet another one of those albums. Of course we all know Kanye and some of his hits (and misses, if we talk about non-musical accomplishments), but this was the first full KW album I listened with concentration, and it delivers! Full of banners, with self boast and a bit of self parody as well, samples, kick-ass feats, top notch production, sonic journey and a collage, electronically distorted vocals next the string quartet and a dripping piano... It is a mountain, but I'm sure there are people who won't see a mountain for the trees. A toast for those douchebags!
4.8/5 almost perfection all the way thru
I wish this album wasn't as good as it is - it would make it easier to ignore Kanye completely.
The guy's a melt, but the album's a classic
One of Kayne’s best albums with so many hit songs. Even after 15 years, it’s still well-played and relevant. Fav song - Runaway 5/5
Kanye West’s music has taken so many forms and styles over the years that when someone says, “I miss the old Kanye,” they could be referring to at least a half dozen different iterations of him. Listening to “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” it’s hard not to miss the Kanye who had great taste. The production here steals the show. Every song is colorful and meticulously crafted, filled with details and grace notes that elevate the music. I also miss the Kanye who knew how to keep everything in balance. This album has straightforward rap songs alongside genre-bending tracks that push the boundaries of hip-hop. He also knows here that there are only so many crass jokes he can make before needing to deliver a verse packed with wordplay and wit. And for every moment of arrogant egotism, there’s one of unvarnished vulnerability. You know what Kanye I miss the most? The artful Autotune Kanye. I love that distorted vocal solo he does at the end of “Runaway,” blurring his voice with distortion and vocoder effects until it becomes abstract. It’s heartbreaking and gorgeous. I guess I mostly miss the Kanye who cared. In 2025, Kanye seems to think that caring what people think about you makes you weak. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Caring what people think can just mean putting thought and care into your art and crafting an album that’s big and ambitious and entertaining. I miss that Kanye.
Really big and epic Kanye record. This one shows everything that makes him great; his vocal tone is hard and captivating, his flow is incredible and works so well with every beat, and his lyrics are always dynamic, interesting, funny, witty, and memorable. This is actually a hard rate for me. College Dropout is a 5/5, and Yeezus is one of my favorite rap albums so that was definitely a 5/5. Personally I think this is in a tier that is slightly below those two. It doesn't have the "wow" factor of Yeezus, and I think the big catchy hook-heavy hits aren't as huge as on College Dropout. And yet when I hear "POWER" I want to scream at the top of my lungs, I want to drive faster, I want to run faster, I want to be Kanye at the album release party. Maybe not that exactly because Kanye is a POS. It's a 5. It's so good. I love the album cover.
Already knew a few songs on here, mainly Gorgeous, Devil In A New Dress, All Of The Lights and Runaway, 3 amazing hits. What an artist Kanye is, one of my favourite hip hop artists of all time, especially his earlier work. This is almost perfect hip hop, beautifully produced, interesting, entertaining, innovative, fun, it has it all. The production the samples, lyrics, and features, all come together in a perfect way to create this masterpiece of an album. Samples by Kanye are insane, as always. "Power" sampling 21st century schizoid man is legendary. The features are also perfectly chosen, everyone serves the album. This also kickstarted Nicki Minaj’s career by featuring her on “Monster”, her verse got viral on Tiktok as well. To say this album had a cultural impact is an understatement. This is one of those albums where the reputation is completely justified, very highly regarded. This is Kanye at his most maximalist, everything is turned up to 11: the production, the emotions, the ego, the vulnerability. Sonically it’s massive. Orchestral, soul samples, distorted synths, prog-like song structures, and layering. This is hip-hop that thinks like rock and classical music in terms of scale. Each song feels fitting and the album flows quite well. Lyrically, Kanye is very self-aware here. He leans fully into his flaws, arrogance, insecurity, indulgence and puts them on display without trying to excuse them. It’s narcissistic and confessional at the same time. Despite its length it doesnt drag. The album cover match the mood too, provocative, uncomfortable, and self-conscious, reflecting the themes of controversy, fame, and moral decay. Overall, this is a modern classic and one of the most important albums of the 2010s. Not just a great hip-hop record, but a landmark album in popular music. Favourite tracks are: Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, POWER, All Of The Lights, So Appalled, Devil In A New Dress, Runaway, Hell Of A Life and Blame Game. YEEZY!
Second favorite Kanye album. Runaway is apparently a sad song? Kinda makes watching this guys spiral really depressing Yeezy taught me
No comment, too complicated
high 5
All good
The guy is a bellend but this is a 5 star album.
It’s a shame that being such a loud, obnoxious, prejudiced asshole means that you can still make great bloody music. This album hits a sweet spot for me between the noughties with all the nostalgic beats and progressing into the pop 10’s. The featured artists elevate it and West’s delusional self-importance shines through in each record…but goddamn is it epic; funnily, I don’t think he could have made this album without his ego. Wanted to make it 4 stars but it’s too begrudgingly brilliant.
Kanye West is a bad guy. That said, this album is nearly flawless. Its less a Kanye album and more of a 'Friends of Kanye' album, he's not even the best rapper on most songs. But really the money here is the production, Kanye at his height. He's an egotistical asshole but he might actually be the most 'important' artist of his generation. Even the blurred out album cover is iconic.
A five-star album, one of probably the three most influential albums personal to me in my life, and an album I will never listen to again. Cherish the memories.
I enjoyed
Maybe the epitome of the "separate the artist from the art" phenomenon. What more needs to be say about this thing? It really is a Maximalist Pop/ Id Rap masterpiece. I defy anyone to find a project with as eclectic (and brilliant) a "feat." list as this: Rhianna, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver, Sir Elton, etc., etc... Not one man should have all that power.
Chad before he went non-chad.
This is not my favorite Kanye album, but it’s still considered an all-time great hip hop album for a reason. So many bangers and some good introspective tracks as well.
Fuck Kanye, but this album is great
Kanye is a whole... Thing now, but it's impossible to deny just how good of a run he was on from like 2004-2011. This album is either the end of his epic run, or the culmination of what he'd been building towards for a whole decade, depending on where this album lies in your personal heirarchy of his early career output. I won't spend any internet ink here discussing the merits of this near-perfect album. It's an exceptional piece of work.
Gardzę Kanye. Ale niestety ta płyta jest fantastyczna, dobra nawijka, świetne featy, muzycznie i melodyjnie też sztos. Z ciężkim sercem, ale 9/10.
Dark fantasy - 9 Gorgeous - 10 Power - 10 all of the lights + interlude - 10 monster - 9 so appalled - 7 RZA gotta chill lmao devil in a new dress - 10 runaway - 9 hell of a life - 8 blame game - 10 lost in the world - 9 who will survive in america - 6
Probably the best Kanye album
It’s probably the best production I’ve ever heard on an album but I will forever die on the hill that The College Dropout is his best album…
Synes bare det virker som en celebration of life med alt på highest highs og lowest lows
I was hoping I'd listen to MBDTF and realize we were just on some weird shit back in the day and it wasn't actually that good. I'm very reluctant to admit that it holds up. It's inconsistent, flawed, controlled chaos, however you wanna say it, but if we're fully ignoring the Kanye problem this is like a 4.5. Might be a 5 without the Chris Rock skit at the end of Blame Game. Edit: eh, it probably does deserve the 5. Fuck Kanye West and everything he stands for.
"separate the art from the artist" is the understanding of a child. it posits art as this magical thing that exists independent of the person or people who created it. it's an intellectual dead end and the act of a coward. I respect people who cut these tainted elements out of their life and people who sit with the struggle of accepting someone who made good art is a shit person equally, but I will never respect a "separate the art from the artist" person. if you think this album is great it's because it is so identifiably of and about the artist. my appreciation for this album exists, has to exist, in the knowledge of the person kanye was (not great!) and is (so much worse!). unfortunately, this is a great album weighed down by the godawful Chris Rock skit during Blame Game. and Rick Ross being on it. and with the current knowledge that the kanye making this music will eventually become a nazi, a trump supporter (redundant), and someone who clearly needed someone who cares about him to intervene a long time ago. there isn't a weak track on the entire album and Lost in the World / Who Will Survive in America is one of the greatest album closers in music.
Unfassbar gutes Album hab’s den ganzen lieben langen Tag gehört
For some reason I had never listened to all of this but I liked it a lot. It’s hard to rate for me because it has some of my favorite songs from Kanye’s whole career, but also some random ones (ex: monster) that feel really overcrowded and I was sort of waiting to end. It’s kind of insane and depressing comparing this album to like vultures 2. Fav songs: dark fantasy, devil in a new dress, runaway, hell of a life
*Scandal noted* that being said this album rips, the beats are amazing, the pop stylings well orchestrated, the avant garde art rap of kanye is themed perfectly throughout the album. 4.5 stars
Great album, shame he's a prick
Better than Coldplay
Second hip-hop album in a row. Fantastic. I listened to this album 1.5 month ago and here we go again. It's great. It's a modern classic and Kanye is a genius in his own way, I love that way, so I love the album too. Kanye is another one of those "свободные ебанаты" who actually pushes the genre and the whole culture forward. I like the quote "move culture or move with culture" Kanye is one of the ones who move culture and it's wonderful. He doesn't have the greatest lyrics, he doesn't have the best flow, but he has black balls. "'Cause the same people that tried to blackball me Forgot about two things, my Black balls" "I'm livin' in the future so the present is my past My presence is a present, kiss my ass" Solid 4/5 —————————————— Liked: — Gorgeous — POWER — Monster — So Appalled — Devil In A New Dress — Runaway — Lost In The World
I really enjoyed the music, but I found the lyrics troubling. It definitely feels impactful on an emotional level as well.
Loved it. Fun to hear the different collaborators.
4.5
Wow, what a great album! Hope this guy doesn't turn out to be a nazi!
Amazing album, huge for when me and my wife were first dating. Such a shame he completely lost his mind.
One of the best
i miss this Kanye… this album is such a classic modern Hip Hop record. if only he didn’t fuck up his career like he did in recent history. but this album truly shows Kanye’s genius as an artist at a time when Hip Hop truly reigned supreme. so many crazy features and great verses. definitely a 5/5.
“Maximalist hip hop” is what it was called. Kanye’s magnum opus. This is one album that will forever be on my “art separated from artist” list. Not a bad song on the whole thing.
Classic
hate for kanye and hate for the whole tiktok wave but this album is amazing. for sure an album that leaves a deep trace in music history. never been amazed from his rapping but he’s the mind behind the whole project so no matter if he is not the only producer i have to give him props for the production which is the reason i give it 5. the best way i can describe it is it’s over the top but in the most accessible (and commercial) way possible. also hate for the usage of themes such as king crimson, black sabbath and aphex twin, never again please, respect the true artists kanye
Brilliant, warped and punishing to be talking about today but how is it less than 5 stars?
Seriously hate this dude. Crazy ass mf. That said, This is the first Kanye album I’ve listened to. Damn. Melodic, creative, inspiring and not as repetitive as so much modern hip hop. 4.5 stars
Modern classic. Fav: gorgeous, monster.
What more could one say about this album? It’s a masterpiece from start to finish. West puts on full display everything people love and hate about him - it’s as close as you can get to stepping inside his megalomaniacal mind. If hubris could sum itself up, it would choose this album. The only song that doesn’t land for me is Blame Game, and Hell of a Life only barely passes. Gorgeous is my favourite off this track. But everything else is phenomenal. The production is bombastic and replete, every beat is a killer and almost everyone (excluding Hov) brings their A-game here. This is one of the greatest rap albums ever made and easily one of my top five favourites in the genre. I didn’t expect to hit it so early in the 1001 list, but oh well, now the question is whether anything else can knock it off from the #1 spot.
"Sasquatch, Godzilla, King Kong, Loch Ness, goblin, ghoul, a zombie with no conscience" - Jay-Z, Monsters
Obviously been here before but part of the 1001 online project now. Fun to go back, it's been a while. Still production level at such an insanely high level. Looks like you can't go 4,5 but that's probably where I'd be.
Absolutely perfect. Sad he went down the path he did but prime Kanye was historic.
One of my favorite hip hop albums ever. Honestly kind of reminds me of Hamilton. Google says Hamilton was largely based on Kanye’s life… not sure if that’s true or not though
a classic album. an intricately layered symphony of mania and ego, and an incredible triumph of hedonism
Each song represents a different stage in my life.
Wow I don't think I've ever closely listened to this the whole way through, but its really great, a very dense album, even though its so long, there's so many great features and lots of great instrumental parts. I always forget how great of a rapper he was (probably because he's fallen off sooo hard), but there are some amazing clever bars and funny ones as well, which I guess he was more known for, there's also some more deep stuff, and interesting that he was still quite left wing at this point. The production, which I think Kanye and loads of other people did is amazing, feels very grand, with the strings and piano parts, but there's some amazing synth stuff on here, which I guess is reminiscent of graduation. The guitar solos and parts which I think Mike Dean did are also amazing, and I feel like they are underused in rap stuff. The features are incredible, I feel like while I can't name many Nicki Minaj verses, this one has always been my favourite. The Raekwon verse is incredible, but I can't really say the same thing for the RZA one. The John Legend one is quite interesting he's a great singer, and the Aphex Twin sample on there is great. Rick Ross is amazing and the Jay-Z ones are also great, I think he maybe felt like he had to prove that he was still good with all these younger artists. I've actually never been crazy about runaway, it definitely overstays its welcome with this goofy autotune riffing thing (although the Pusha T verse is great). Hell of a life was always my favourite song, even though it is a bit vulgar I always thing this song with the bass and synth arpeggios sounds a lot like Tyler the Creator, although the bass does sound like a fart. Although I guess a downside could be that some of the mixes are quite shocking and some stuff is mega clipping. Favourite songs: Dark fantasy, gorgeous, POWER, all of the lights (both), Monster, so appalled, devil in a new dress, hell of a life, blame game, lost in the world. Overall around 9/10
If Igor opened me up to music, then this is the album that really sucked me in. Very few albums mean as much to me as this one
Kanske. Antagligen inte.
10-talets starkaste album, utan tvekan.
I was waiting for some bangers from the 2010s. This is definitely a great one by Ye. Not as good as Jesus Walks but still, it won Hip Hop/Rap album of the year for a reason. Love it!
Klassiker!
When listening to this album, I googled "Kanye West Magnum Opus" and the first result was reassuring. Beautiful and twisted...what a great way to describe this album and this artist. More adjectives can be added to describe this man after it's release in 2010...but to keep the focus on the album... The production, the features, the hype behind it and the hype that came from it...it's legendary and no more needs to be said.
A classic. Great songs from front to back. Obviously don't like the man, but I can't not like this album.
No words needed for this album. An musical masterpiece, easily 10/10 album, where every single goddamn song is fucking perfect
Still a masterpiece. Wish this guy was still around :(
Regrettably, a full throated 5/5. Probably a 6 if we’re honest.
One of my fav albums growing up and today … No more drugs for me , pussy and religion is all I need
Every time I give Kanye 5 stars I have to be like “I know Kanye is bad but still” but anyway this is peak
Goat, already heard it
This was the first album I ever listened to, I think it is near flawless... shame about its creator
This can't not be a 5. It's too good.
Kanye's magnum opus - it was all so good before he became a mental nazi. He was still in his imperial phase at this point and hadn't lost it yet (though in hindsight maybe some cracks were beginning to show). The production is next level, the rhymes are by turns funny, paranoid and pissed off and the colloborators and featured artists all bring their A-game. Just an immense statement from the biggest artist of the time. Is it my favourite Kanye album? Maybe. Best Tracks: POWER; Monster; Runaway
It is unfortunately really good lol
Hate him all you want now but this (and all albums before this) are masterpieces. His ability to craft these songs is incredible. Not the best lyricist at times but it doesn't matter, the production on each song is so good.
Kayne is bad now but old Kanye was something
A 6/10???? Really???
Welcome everyone. As many of you know, I was one of Kanye’s biggest fans and a close follower of his career when he was with us. Looking around this room I think a lot of us have some feelings about Kanye that are complex. But within the complexity is a great deal of adoration and admiration for an artist that created some truly transcendent music. I’d just like to take a few minutes to share some of these feelings. I was in college when I first got close with Kanye. He was my first favorite hip hop artist. I had My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy on my iPod. It was my sound track to drives to Santa Barbara, hype music when playing pick up basketball, and one of the few things that helped me feel good during a down year in my life. Kanye reminded me that the ultimate super power one could have was an ultimate belief in oneself and I think that’s encapsulated in this album. Preceding MBDTF Kanye had the trilogy of College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation that were an absolute paradigm shift in the rap landscape. In an era of dime store gangster rap, baggy clothes, and crunk beats Kanye was a breath of fresh air. His follow up, 808’s and Heartbreak saw Ye leave behind all of his innovations and reinvent his sound. He found liberation in the limitation of an 808 drum machine and his vocoder, auto tuned vocals to color an album of ballads. When one is constantly reinventing the wheel, where do they go next? At the VMA’s a drunken Kanye found himself on stage interrupting Taylor Swift in an attempt to champion his peer. He went to Hawaii and back into the laboratory. In his exile he made an album from his view on top of the rap game. Kanye brought new life into hip hop that I didn’t think was possible. He made anmaximal sound and created rap that could fill the entirety of an arena. Kanye brought string quartets, ballerina, and Aphex Twin into his world. He told us what it was like to have Power and let us feel that power in our beings though his instrumentals. We felt All of the Lights shine down on upon us. Kanye showed us his genius. He took a small motif of a melody and created a wall of sound to smack all of us So Apalled brought us into the middle of a cypher with some of the greatest in the game. Monster launched a career that opened up the genre to the other half of the population. Devil in a New Dress brought back soul sample ye. He brought an important piece of black prose and invited all of us into participate. He created an anthem for the douchebags, the ass holes, the scumbags. Every one of them that we know. He challenged us all to Runaway. Look at you. He took a break from vocals and created a soundscape to get lost in. Time and again in this album he took simple concepts and created an entire world for us. Kanye did something in this album that we can’t entirely understand now. Kanye made bold decisions and every single decision he made was the right decision. This album flawed. Its perspective is damaged. But it’s also ambitious. It’s bold. It’s transformative in a way that cannot be understood in a way retrospect. Music is art but it doesn’t always feel artistic. Kanye made hip hop feel like an artistic venture. He made a sound that could be featured in the Philharmonic. He made an aesthetic that could be feature in the Louvre. He broke through a glass ceiling that people never saw until they watched the shards fall. Kanye spoke a truth that could be blinding. He conveyed in ways that helped us all to see. That light ended up being his undoing. Prometheus perished on his rock and we watched the Vultures feast. Harvey Dent once said, “you either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain.” He was the ultimate underdog, the unlikely ultimate, the industrious innovator, the populous paragon. We watched him fall, but I’m always going to remember how he helped me fly.
Not really genre defining as much as artform defining.
What a talented young man, I wonder what he's up to these days? Quick reminder if you rate this poorly because Ye is a scumbag but have a 5 star rating for Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Rolling Stones, or Aerosmith (all pedos) then that's a massive self report This album really showcases Kanye's ability to use the human voice as an instrument. It's a shame we'll never get to see this version of Kanye West again. I don't think there was really any producer or artist like him. Probably in the top 3 best hip-hop albums of all time, certainly the best prog rap album ever made. There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already, and I'm not generally the biggest fan of Kanye West's music anyways but fuck me can I get behind this and The College Dropout. This was definitely his peak before a long slog of average-to-amazing hits and his mental health issues starting to really show up in his music (and not in a good way). anyways goat album.
Dang… still such a good album. Too bad we got to se how dark and twisted Ye really was.
Being obviously a music genius,Kanye West lost his sanity somewhere on the road. This album is incredibly creative and every song different, huge thing for a rap album and from a guy that nowadays thinks his girlfriend is a naked installation for the world to excibit. So let's break it down song by song. In Dark Fantasy has a genius sample "can we get much higher?" line from the song "In High Places" by Mike Oldfield, In Gorgeous he sampled Enoch Light and the Glittering Guitars's "You Showed Me". It has this amazing guitar carpet and a hypnotic feeling, In Power he samples King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man," Continent Number 6's "Afromerica," and Cold Grits' "It's Your Thing," with the King Crimson sample being the most prominent in this iconic production, and by adding some mic techniques effects in his voicings gives this what else a dynamic,a POWER, All of The Lights violin and piano intro is out of this world,in the explicit main song he samples "Bam Bam" by Sister Nancy and "Do What You Gotta Do" by Nina Simone,it also has some Jungle drumming and Rihanna's blissful vocals, fantastic, one of my favourites, Monster has amazing drum sampling and some tight rhyming and also contains samples of "On the Bus" from the movie Napoleon Dynamite and "The Hoe's in Church" by LaWanda Page,Nicki Minaj is also a ''monster'' rhymer on this one! Also a favourite,my head was up and down in the entire song!Distorted vocals towards the end along with the melody is also a treat, So Appaled contains samples of "You Are - I Am" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins, "Can't Knock the Hustle" by Jay-Z ,A dramatic orchestral distillment, absolutely hypnotic and fantastic,f**king ridiculous line might have taken it too far though, In Devil In A New Dress has a blissful 60' soul carpet with Smokey Robinson's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?"sample, Runaway starts with a one note (and then some) piano and progresses geniously with these piano notes and with a drumming pattern sampled from the song "Expo 83" by The Backyard Heavies, very interesting and wonderful, Hell of A Life starts powerfully with an agressive distorted electronic bass and has beautiful synth arps adding to the dramatic character of the song, here he sampled Black Sabbath's "Iron Man"respectfully, In the Blame Game we got a dreamy, sad and nostalgic feeling, very soothing, here he samples Aphex Twin's "Avril 14th",the sample is a "plaintive keyboard instrumental" from the 2001 Aphex Twin album Drukqs,a pleasant surprise for me as it was for all his entire album sampling from songs/tracks that i already know and love!Unnessesary p*ssy talking in the end though, Lost In The World has a strong ''Woods'' sample by Bon Iver, very well blended though here, energetic and a nice addition, some creative tribal rhythms with bpm changing at the end and preaching adds to the song, Who will survive in America was my least favourite, too commercial for me,it has a sample from Gil Scott-Heron's "Comment #1 which is a bridge,it flows directly from the preceding song, "Lost in the World," which also samples this. A very all-rounded album with amazing production and cameos, never a dull moment in this one,i so enjoyed the sampling which portrays Kanye's influences from all genres.
Favorite Track: Runaway
Favs: Gorgeous, POWER, All of the Lights, Devil in a New Dress
From what I know about Kanye West, I don't think much of him, but he sure knows how to produce a top-flight album. I really enjoyed most of the tracks, and some of his lyrics just had me laughing out loud. I'm ready to give this five stars, and add it to my Tidal library for my future entertainment.
Hugsar godt å vere i Inida då denne kom
This is my first time listening to this outside of hearing some of the singles on the radio. It is awesome. Blew my expectations out of the water. Good music, good production, good rapping, cool concept that feels cohesive throughout the album.
I was wondering which of Kanye’s three entries on the list I’d get first, and I couldn’t have asked for better than this. Maximalist Kanye at his finest, this album has everything he has at his disposal thrown at it: unbelievable features, some of Kanye’s best production work ever, great poignant use of auto tune and vocoder, championing young talent, and actually great written verses by Kanye himself (fuck, remember those?). He felt like he still had something to say on this album, and it’s a strange experiencing listening to it now knowing how he destroyed his marriage and pushed away every single person that helped him make his magnum opus. Runaway would deem this record a masterpiece on its own, but the intro through to All Of The Lights is a 10/10 experience. Monster used to be one of my favourite tracks but it’s waned on a repeat listen. The outro skit of Blame Game goes on a bit, and Devil In A New Dress is kind of boring. The outro of Lost In The World going into Gil Scott Heron’s Comment #1 for Who Will Survive In America draws this album to a perfect close. I haven’t listened to Kanye in the longest time for obvious reasons. It’s hard to listen to this now with what he became. It’s a shame the man didn’t seek the help he so clearly needed and became an attention obsessed piece of shit, but it’s hard to deny the impact his pre-Pablo career had on me.
Top tier shit
Will Kanye ever top this? Probably not
Classic, banger, absoluut top.
*miss the old kanye line*
Could I possibly ever rate this anything other than 5*? Absolutely not
Every song is so powerful, so composed. The features are all deliberate, and the album's flow from song to song thoughtfully presented (although "Christian Dior Denim Flow" should have replaced "Blame Game" 100%). A reasonable contender for greatest hip hop album of all time. "Runaway" is my all-time favorite, but this re-listen solidified that "Monster" is one of his greatest songs across his career
wowzers
Separate the art from the artist
This one’s for lamp
Shame about what happened after, but an undisputed classic. 5.
He was awesome before the psychosis induced nazism
Didn’t listen cuz I don’t want any of my money going to Kanye, but this album is an absolute banger
I miss the old Kanye
kinda of a brilliant album
5 stars I have a history with this album. It transitioned me from close-minded about contemporary (at the time) hip hop to a fan. This album is huge, with production, guest verses, Kanye’s own flow, and no skippable tracks. This was the culmination of a near perfect first 5 albums (plus Watch the Throne a year later). This album is as close to perfect as Kanye ever got, and the things that fall short of perfect (the excesses of “Runaway” and “Blame Game”) are forgivable in the scheme of things. Obligatory comments about Kanye being a troubled and troubling person who has only gotten worse with time.
(95/100)
Separating art from artist, this is one of the greatest albums of all time, and certainly one of the best of the 10s, if not the best. Incredible production, lyrics that serve as a strong summation of the artist, massive choruses, great guest spots, multiple iconic songs that would define soundtracks for the next decade. There's a reason Kanye's ego spiralled so out of control, because for a brief moment, he was one of the greatest in the world.
Amazing album.
Forgot how much I LOVE this album
Kanye zanim oszalał :)
great production, stands up well after a long time
i genuinely think you are either racist or stupid if you don't like this album
Peak Kanye West. This albums music was ahead of its time (2010). A masterpiece. Powerful.
5 stars no question. One of the best albums of all time. Gives me shivers and emotion of nostalgia. I admittedly didn't really listen to it much when it came out but have grown to love it. Fuck Kanye West now smh.
this is unfortunately a perfect album. wish it was made by anyone else.
listening to this reminded me of rihanna's titties in the all of the lights video 🚬
omfg.... i really was a huge kanye stan when he came into the scene and each album was getting better and better before gestures at how he is now.......... so i haven't went back to his music in like... a year plus? so revisiting this i can't get over how fucking talented he is 😭 it's still so good............. can't believe i remember all the words too LMAO. wow take me back 🚬
Fuck Kanye but I'm afraid this album is quite fantastic.
Rating:9.8/10 best kanye album complaints: the skit on blame game is corny af other than that everything is perfect it's one of the best albums ever made
Fuck Kanye West, but this is his last good album, and it's brilliant. Brilliant enough that Kanye's worst ramblings (at the time) were able to be excused by his talent. But this was before he became an actual Nazi. The albums of Kanye's chosen for the list are largely not his best in my opinion, except for this one. But this album makes me sad because it's so good, and he'll never get back there again. He's too hate-filled and believes his own hype too much. This album does fall off a little near the end with some of the epically long songs, but the first few songs are possibly the best he's ever done. I have to separate the art from the artist to rate it properly, and in that case it truly deserves 5 stars.
It‘s like mbdtf
I really don't like Kanye West as a person but this was a very good album.
Kanye is Lord
just so unfortunate man
Really well written and produced album. Not my favorite style, but I understand the art and it’s well done. I get why it’s a top 20-25 album ever.
The production is insane, one of the best albums for the last 20 years
I love the album, but don't support the artist. I knew I'd get a Kanye album and considered whether I'd listen to it. I've decided to separate the art from the artist, and I'm glad I did. The production is amazing, the writing is witty, and the features are great! Fav tracks: I loved most of the album, personal favorites are "Blame Game" and "Devil in a New Dress". The latter half of "Power" is great. 5/5
This was the last album Kanye showed any self awareness. Battling the combination of his ego and the power that comes with fame, it clearly felt like he was on a tipping point. In retrospect, we know he lost that battle. Outstanding album. One the best produced albums I’ve ever heard.
Hate this dude but my god this album is great.
On Yeezus Kanye told us “he’ll give us what we need, it may not be what we want” Well this is what the people want. HITS and dramaaaaa. Fans: (Get mad that Kanye made fun of T Swift) Kanye: I’m gonna fucking kill myself!!!!! Amazing achievement. Will be listening to a lot of the “Dissect” season on this. That may sway me, but right now I can’t get over how dumb the catalyst to this was. Making a scene at an award show over a MUSIC VIDEO! For that to be his rock bottom is just plain dumb. We now know that would not be his rock bottom, but hearing about how he triumphs over making fun of Taylor Swift is hard to get past. I’m sure I’m glossing over the nuance and how he’s a complicated person etc. Still dumb. Been listening to “Power” a lot after my friend Alex mentioned the King Crimson sample. Very cool. Echo what everyone else has said, bravo you crazy bastard. Letting the T Swift thing slide because I also think she’s overrated.
"Found bravery in my bravado" - this line from the first song on this album announces what Kanye is up to, and the rest of the album backs it up. The first half is stronger than the second half, but no one was doing the kind of stuff Kanye did at the time, and not since either. The beats are all interesting in their own right, and varied from each other. Mixing the sacred (gospel music, harmonies) and profane (grinding beats, autotune, references to his dick) is a classic formula that Kanye mastered here. I don't know if he is a particularly cogent storyteller, documentarian of the human condition or even lyricist, but that's not really what he is about. He is more of an aesthetic innovator than anything - and still, he does that so well that I don't think it's too much of an exaggeration to say this album transcends its genre on its way to being damn near a masterpiece.
An all timer. This came out my sophomore year in high school and half of these songs defined a significant chunk of the soundtrack of my life for the next few years. Its a 5/5 rap album The ensemble of collaborators really pushes it to new heights. The maximalist approach is so much more pleasing to my ear than the Yeezus album was. The album art is so damn provocative. I did a deep dive on George Condo and the way he details human teeth is disturbing, but I cant keep my eyes off it My big gripe: I wonder who is responsible for what on this. Kanye gets credited with the genius but with so many collaborators (?) and producers (7), I wonder where exactly Kanye fits here.. who came up with the core ideas? Is Kanye playing George Martin here with all the strings and horns? The wiki doesn’t describe it enough 🤷♂️
This album aged SO WELL. Holy fuck. Got better with time. The production on this is absolutely mammoth. Favorites are Runaway (Pusha T is a gawd), Dark Fantasy, Monster (other than Jay-Z's verse - one of the worst guest verses you'll ever hear). Even Nicki Minaj is great on this album (shout out to whoever her ghostwriters were). As always with Kanye, he left some breadcrumbs of mental illness that are more obvious in retrospect (looking at you, Who Will Survive in America). But hey gotta take the bad with the good
Absolutely insane how many of these songs went on to be huge huge hits. Reminds me of listening to Californication - like, oh shit this song too? And somehow even after hearing most of these songs a ton over the years, none of them feel stale or overplayed. I’ve had POWER on lots of running playlists over the years - that song can make a fat dad feel like Prefontaine. Couple of tracks toward the end that are a little more filler, but this album might find its way into my top 10-20 of all time when it all shakes out.
Do I hate Kanye West? Yes. Do I think My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a masterpiece? Absolutely! It is one of the most impressive outings in pop rap, and songs like "Dark Fantasy" and "Runaway" are some of my favorite songs of all time. So, say what you will about how Kanye is a piece of shit, but... Actually, Idk if I can convince any naysayers that this album is amazing at this point. Oh well.
Peak
G O A T
Great album love Kanye he is massively underrated
This is so good. Why is this so good? Why didn't I listen to this 15 years ago? I recommend finding fan uploads of this on YouTube so you don't give this Nazi royalties, but this is well worth repeated listens. This is listed as progressive rap and rap opera on Wikipedia, which makes me feel like of COURSE I would be into this. I'm so annoyed I didn't hear this back when it was new and before he alienated close friends and collaborators like John Legend. I was like 8 years late to 808s & Heartbreak and now I'm 15 years late to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which I remember being released and I remember friends being excited about it.
Well we can all agree Kanye West is a terrible human, making this one of the few albums maybe it makes sense to not listen to on official channels so he gets no money. But that being said he sure as hell knows how to write a great album, its got massive beats from start to finish with varied style and tempos keeping you hooked the whole way through and the co labs he has bring some lovely changes to the voices involved in the sound mix. If you listen to his lyrics as well you can start to see the signs of what is his decent into madness and it is hilarious to me to catch the south park fish sticks reference, that really got in his head.
You can't deny Kanye is talented. Shitty human being - yes. But also makes great music. Both things can be true at once I really really enjoyed this album. Lots of huge songs on here. All Of The Lights is one of my favourite Kanye songs. Loved the interlude with the strings! I wish he'd get rid of Nicki Minaj's terrible British accent at the start though, that was dreadful 5 ⭐️
Initially wasn't sure about this record when it came out after 808 & Heartbreak which I liked but was quite divisive too, but came to view MBDTF ultimately as a classic of the last two decades. Last great Yeezy record with amazing production and a who's who of collaborators, and a far cry from his projects now which are not just weaker but beyond the pale and borderline unlistenable.
Yeah wheb Kanye was good
Before he turned into an insane person, Kanye West was one of the more innovative hip-hop artists of the 21st century, and this album is really his magnum opus. The production is masterful. There's a super weird collection of artist features including Jay-Z, Raekwon, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Justin Vernon, Drake and Elton F**king John. And there's just a ton of great songs here -- "POWER", "All of the Lights", "Monster", "Devil in a New Dress", and "Runaway", which is still one of the best songs of the 21st century. If I had a minor complaint, it's that the album is a bit long, and it would've been killer to just have "Runaway" be the closing track. Still, it's a fantastic album and one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. 5 stars.
Ik ken dit album al goed. Heel vet album!
I really liked this album - more than I expected to. Obviously can't play in the car for kids but will probably listen to it again.
Kanye’s definitive statement, a colossal and excessive portrait of an egomaniac in crisis. Huge beats, huge hooks, huge stars, huge everything. Full of sin, self-loathing, self-pity, arrogance, violence, and loneliness. Probably a masterpiece. Best song: Runaway
Anyone born in the past 15 to 20 years probably only knows Kanye West as a right-wing conspiracy theorist and cultural pariah. But from 2005 to 2011, he wasn’t just a rapper. He was a force. And My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is him at the absolute peak of his powers. This album is loud, dramatic, beautiful, and deeply chaotic. It’s part therapy session, part flex, and part art project. The list of guest features is stacked—Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver, Kid Cudi, Rihanna—and every one of them brings something solid. Even Chris Rock shows up. And somehow, in the middle of all that star power, Kanye still manages to be the gravitational center. It’s wild that this was his comeback album after the Taylor Swift fallout. Most artists would’ve laid low. Kanye dropped one of the best albums of the decade. Favorite song: Runaway
Listening to this album since my childhood, but big dissapointment of what Kanye West became
There is something compelling about this. It could have been a mess given the amount of people involved but every track works and pulls you in. I have listened multiple times already which says something. Almost loses points for the Chris Rock skit which I absolutely cannot stand. However, 5 stars it is. Didn’t expect that going in to this one
I wish Kanye never went crazy. Back to back bangers.
I'm giving it a 5 off principle. Idk if I can listen to it given the current situation and I have songs from 808s being my favourite album.
