My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Det finnes et argument for at dette er det viktigste albumet i min personlige musikkhistorie. Jeg har aldri regnet det som mitt favorittalbum, men det som skjedde med musikksmaken min sommeren 2012 kan knapt undervurderes. Det hverken begynte eller sluttet med MBDTF, men det føles som den første store milepælen; et meg før og etter album. (Den andre store milepælen var In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Ja, jeg ble oppdratt av /mu/.) Idag kan jeg også se den som en større milepæl: Kanye avlsuttet den moderne historiens kanskje dårligste tiår med å slippe det ultimate exempelet på musikken som skulle definere det neste. Skal man høre ett album fra det nye 10-tallet, så er det dette.

For et spenn det er i denne plata. Fra flotte ballader som "Runaway", "Lost in the World" og "Blame Game" til episke "All of the Lights", dansbare "Lost in the World" og lofi-låta "Gorgeous" treffer så jævlig. Kanskje det mest gjennomførte albumet til Ye, både som produsent og låtskriver. Det blir vanskelig å konkurrere med Kanye om tittelen som kongen av samples

It’s one of my all time favorite albums and one of the hip hop albums that expanded my appreciation of the genre as a whole. Is it perfect start to finish? No (thanks Jay-Z). But it’s a hell of a journey through Kanye’s psychology at the time, swinging between triumphant joy and debilitating depression with some brief spurts of comic relief as he explores different relationships falling apart. Best moments: The one-liners on Gorgeous, the All Of The Lights interlude into the opening hook, Devil In A New Dress (especially Rick Ross), Blame Game song, “Yeezy reupholstered my pussy” Worst moments: Monster, any Jay-Z verse, Who Will Survive In America being a different track than Lost in the World

Kanye needs help. And I don't really listen to his stuff anymore with all the antisemitism and everything else. Taking this all away (to the extent that we can) is kind of important at times though because unfortunately these stories are everywhere and from everyone. So this album? Great. Power>All of the Lights> Monster is huge.

Yknow sure hes an awful person and a racist(race traitor) and stupid as a bag of rocks and sexist and a total piece of shit and garbage come to life as a human being and hangs out with trash celebrities and is actually a fucking nazi(dw he said sowwy) but damn can Kanye make a fucking album.

Probably Kanye’s best thingy. The production is so good. All of the guests are great, Nicki kills it on Monster. Kanye’s actual vocals and lyrics are the weakest part of this thing. It’s pretty great from start to finish, probably would only skip “So Apalled” and “Blame Game” if I ever came back to listen— but I probably won’t because the actual experience of listening to this is soured in with how much of a PoS Kanye is. There is so much music in the world to listen to so I’m not really sweating over it. 4/5 closer to a 5

Oh god here we go. Right off the bat, I couldn't even play this album on Spotify because I had anything with Kanye blocked. Now, this is 2010 Kanye, so he wasn't full blown off his meds insane, but it was the start of it. He disappeared after grabbing the mic from Taylor Swift at the MTV Music Video Awards to declare that he thought Beyonce should have won. He then recorded this album with a large collaborative team in secret. It absolutely blew up and he's been downhill mentally since. Kanye had such a great team with him for this album and they were able to produce a lot of absolute gems. All of the Lights is an incredible song about balancing stardom and your regular life, especially if you're struggling. I love the connection with "all of the lights" includes ALL of them. Cop lights, flashlights, spotlights. Apparently the Monster music video was banned portraying violence against women. I mean the song is basically yeah, they all know they're pieces of shit and it plays on the horror movie theme. It doesn't show any of them being beat or murdered. Usually hip hop videos have women similarly dressed twerking and dancing, now they're just sitting still and suddenly it's sexist? I dunno, I think it was fine. Runaway. I mean come on if this song doesn't have one of the most iconic intros. And the song is just incredibly sad. Just the tragedy of being suck in a toxic, abusive relationship but also feeling like you can't leave for whatever reason. Trapped by the money or power or whatever. In this case the abuser is straight up telling you, I know it's my fault and you need to runaway from me.....but they're still trapped. It's hard to understate the degree of collaboration that this album went through. A "who's who" of artists working to it and sharing ideas and the results are obvious. Musically the tracks are incredibly done and incorporate many different genres. Lyrically, some tracks are weak, but the messaging in the tracks is deep and poignant at times. Lost In the World - here's your dance track that you were upset about having to make in So Appalled. Honestly the song is so sick though. Super tribal with heavy drum and bass. This track is so underrated. It's easy to dismiss Kanye for who he has become, an actual insane person, but back when he was on his meds and his mental illness was somewhat contained, he was was able to produce incredible music and we only got brief glimpses of his crazy. But credit where it's due, it's a great album.

Never liked him, nor his music. Production is mediocre at best, and if intended, didn't work. Most of the lyrics are the way you'd expect from this kind of music, and I still detest it. There were some short, quite good parts, mostly when other artists were performing, so no credit to Ye.

3/5 THISIS the second Kanye album I’ve listened to, other than whatever is trending. As a producer he’s actually really good. I enjoyed the instrumentals and background a lot. I don’t really like his voice too much in some of these songs. It’s also incredibly difficult to look past his strange politics and presence. Overall not horrible, just not something I’ll listen to bc of that. I really liked Gorgeous tho..

Not kanyes best album but in the mount rushmore of albums. This defined so mutch music afterwards. This is the album from which everything went wakky. Its one of the best produced albums ever and is why kanye is a generational artist if you like it or not. Musicwise he is undeniably amazing

My favourite part of a Kanye West song is the production. My least favourite is his raps/vocals. This record ocicillates between genuinely pretty good and genuinely garbage. Even though the production is often great, even that sometimes falls flat. Some samples are over used (such as the One Piece is real song) which can cause that samples to feel jarring. All that said, every song on this record is iconic and I understand why it's on here. I greatly dislike records with fluctuating quality, so I can't give it higher than a 6/10.

All of Kanye's problematic behavior aside, this album really is a masterpiece. It's bombastic and dramatic in all the right ways. It really pushes the envelope on what hip hop can be. Plus the hits are absolute bangers. Overall- great album not without its flaws. 4.5/5, but worth the upgrade to a 5

It captures a specific kind of modern fame sickness better than almost anything from its period. It is grandiose, ugly, seductive, wounded, and manipulative. It wants your admiration while confessing why it may not deserve it.

Monumental. Hate the player sometimes but the game on display here is completely next-level. Baroque production yet somehow still direct and DIY. Manic money dick-swinging and some degenerate subject matter but also somehow vulnerable, searingly-honest and self aware. A collaboration roster like never seen, from Raekwon to Bon Iver. Samples running a gamut from King Crimson to Aphex Twin and beyond. A long record but it doesn't feel like it to me; the sequencing is almost flawless and captures your attention over the full 68 minutes. It's a magpie patchwork, grabbing ideas, influences, sometimes whole tracks from all over. But it still all comes out feeling like the vision of a single auteur. Does it knowingly mark the high tide point of Ye's career? As a whole, I reckon this is stronger than anything he released up to that point - and evidence suggests he might not get back to this level again. Not sure if I'm mental on this one but I reckon this might be one of the best albums of the last 20 years. Fuck it, it's a five.

I really, really wanted to hate this, but even with my most critical listening, I couldn't find any fault whatsoever. It's an easy five star album, breathtakingly good, but many of the artists here are total pieces of shit, so go figure. I had mixed feelings when artists I do like showed up. When I heard RZA's distinctive voice kick in I went back and looked at the list of guest artists. Raekwon was also a guest, but I missed that on the first listen. I couldn't unhear Niki Minaj however, one of the most vile people walking this planet. Even though she's a dreadful person, I felt it would be petty to dock a point for the short time she's around. The production is outstanding. The samples are quite boggling, particularly when King Crimson kicks in. It's five stars, but leaves me feeling tainted for giving that score.

I just wanted to talk about one track because it captures what makes this album brilliant to me. Devil in a new dress is obviously about a breakdown in a relationship but its absolutely dripping in ego and braggadocio. Kanye is using all these religious metaphors to cast himself as this flawed hero but it is clear he is just hiding behind all of this because the whole thing feels like a defiant 'sorry not sorry'. The clever thing though is that haunting sample looping behind it. It's a sample of Smokey Robinson singing 'Will you still love me tomorrow' pitched up in the old school Kanye style. All the time Kanye is flexing and playing the joker there is the soulful plea in the background exploring Kanye's vulnerability and insecurity, never really knowing if the love (or lust) is real and desperately wondering if it will still be there when the lights come on. It's a great one-two that is easy to miss and this album is full of moments like this. Then Rick Ross shows up, gets his dick out and pisses on everything in the most glorious way possible. A perfect reminder to never take any of this seriously.

I think this album is good, but it is also the absolute definition of a Light 6, and I can't believe people ever got mad at Fantano for that rating. There's a lot to like here, I actually think if you cut the last 5 songs it's basically a masterpiece, but there's also a lot of pretty bad stuff on this album that drags it down. Like honestly, who thought that 3 minutes of Chris Rock talking about reupholstered pussies was a good idea. There's really nothing that crazy about it, it falls pretty far down my Kanye ranking to be honest. Favorites: Dark Fantasy, Power, Runaway

First half promising—Kanye's uniquely wired mind works well in music. But second half derailed by excessive explicit sexual language (pussies, dicks throughout). Shift from creative to crude made it unbearable. Strong start undermined by gratuitous vulgarity.

Some of this was ok but it just doesn't speak to me much. As others have noted the production is certainly very good. It does seem that Kanye gets a very high critical appraisal which I'm not sure he deserves.

Look, if I were rating Kanye on who he is as a person, this would be a 1-star review. But, I'm here to rate the music, and it's undeniable that Kayne did for the rap game. In six years, he released arguably 4 of the greatest albums of all time (some may make a case for 808s & Heartbreaks but that's not for me). As for MBDTF, I think it comes in at #3. Here, Kanye is once again an ok rapper and a phenomenal producer. So many hit songs came from this album. Is it a masterpiece? I don't know..I think it falls a bit short mostly because the actual "rap" is whatever--though somehow Niki Minaj gives probably her best bars yet. You don't have to like Kanye to rate this high, it's fine. My only real complaint about this album is that it's so unnecessarily long. Not even total run time, although that's too long in my opinion, but each individual track is just too long." "Runaway" doesn't need an outro that takes us to the 9 minute mark. "Blame Game" shouldn't be over 7 minutes long. I think each track has its merits, although I really don't like "Hell of a Life", but the length of each of them has me seriously considering knocking what should be a four-star album down to 3 stars.

Really sucks that he’s a nazi now. Growing up in a 98% white rural community I would listen to this while mowing my lawn. Aside from elevating hip hop classic music, it also introduced me to racial politics I was fully unaware of. 2010 Kanye, may have been an asshole, but he at least had a sense of humor and if you bother to listen to the whole record comes off as maybe a flawed narrator, but surprisingly self aware. Everyone from jay z to bon iver to Elton John is featured.

Really interesting album. Lots of big sounds, loads of interest, massive depth. Some a bit poppy for me, some lyrics YAK but some are kind of funny 'Yeezy reupholstered my pussy'. Hahaha. Also made me laugh this list getting a bit self referential - 21st century schizoid man sample. Not a fan of Kanye West the man (massive understatement). But this album rates a 4 for me.

As noted earlier, artists of this genre tend to collaborate frequently, which is the case on this album. Even though there is a lot of talking, Kanye at least makes an effort to do some singing. There is more music here than any of the other rap albums so far, which is a positive. Still, it’s all so forgettable. 2.5 stars.

I just had to figure out how to rate Eminem, and now they're giving me Kanye. Really putting things in perspective. But we're separating the art from the artist (or at least trying), so let's see. I've never listened to this album in full before. Slur count = 65. Man, I really liked Nicki Minaj 15 years ago. OK, the album is pretty good, but luckily I have no real attachment to it, so I can give it a middling 3. Some clever lines, some solid beats and backing music, some good features. But we know how things turned out. Lots of pop culture references here too. Highlights: 'Power', esp. the line "They say I was the abomination of Obama's nation / Well that's a pretty bad way to start the conversation", 'All of the Lights (Interlude)', 'Runaway', 'Lost in the World'

Hot take: aside from the crazy nazi stuff ive always found that kanyes music to be a lil overrated. I think this is one of his better albums but tbh it doesnt like blow me away or anything. 6.5/10

I’ve had three hip hop albums in four days and, to my astonishment, this was head and shoulders above the others. I think the guy is a complete asshat but damn could he put together a richly layered track. And not once but every time. I added “Runaway” to my Generator playlist.

I found this one hard to separate the art from the artist. I despise Kanye West as a personality. I tried to go in without having a bias, and did appreciate both the music and his ability to rap, but the lyrics make this something I didn't like and don't intend to listen to again. Here's hoping this is the only time he appears on this list.

This is basically an avengers/who's who of all of the best artists in 2010 entering a world that Kanye built to lament on becoming famous. His vision and message is clear and everything is carefully thought out. It's everything I love about music. Hardly have any notes. It's hard to critique objectively but I tried! There are no skips and the album holds up. He's an awful dude but I understand why his stans refuse to let him go. There's always a chance you might get something like this. He holds the supply. Highlights: Runaway, Dark Fantasy, Monster

My opinion remains the same as it alway has - not even a top 5 Kanye album and the reputation this album has garnered over time kind of baffles me. Plenty of highs, but plenty of mid tracks and even some shitters. Monster is easily one of the worst tracks in Kanye’s catalogue. Still a solid album, it’s Kanye after all. But not a masterpiece by any metric. 3.5/5

Wow. Never was a fan of Kanye, never listened to anything he had done before. I've been told since, there may be better albums of his. for that reason I will give this a 4. Not a perfect album but overwhelming in its production and ambition. It has become such a wild thing to have to separate artist from art and that is what I am doing here. I cannot support his views. there are a dozen such artists I could list here, black and white. The music is impeccable and that is what held me transfixed for the entirety of the album.

A very nostalgic album for me, and besides everything that kanye has done and become all these past years, this album still is a legendary moment in hip-hop modern history

Pretty good album! There's a good amount of variety in this album, which is my usual gripe with rap music. There were some raunchy lyrics I didn't care for, especially in "Blame Game," but for the most part, I was more interested in how the words flowed. I was pessimistic going into this album because Kanye West's a shitty person, but this was a solid listen.

The switch from the all of the lights interlude to the actual song goes so hard

Oh i miss this version of Kanye. His production was great and worked perfectly with his delivery. No where is this clearer than on ‘Power’ which matches Kanye’s flow with an infectious choral arrangement punctuated with a throbbing bassline and percussion, including some great handclapping. All of the lights brings real star power, which is no finer than the unmistakable piano of John Legend in the interlude version. I have to admit this album is not as strong as i remember it, although i have always preferred his first two albums. That is not to say there are not great tracks here such as the Devil in a New Dress and Runaway. Lost in the World makes great use of Bon Iver’s ‘Woods’ and adds to this by including the man himself, creating a layered soundscape for Kanye to deliver over.

I hate how much I enjoyed this. This is full of amazing guest appearances and samples - everyone from Mike Oldfield to Bon Iver, from Nicki Minaj to Elton John, from King Crimson* to Black Sabbath. The two tracks I knew (“Power” and “All of the Lights”) are so good, but I also enjoyed “Dark Fantasy” and, may God help me, but I also did like “Hell of a Life” - especially its refrain. I am sure Ozzy was thrilled at the time. Lyrically, at least half of this album is about as questionable as Kanye is (see “Hell of a Life”). But actually, it’s not the lyrics you listen for in most cases - it’s very much the musicianship, the melodies, those clever and genre-bending samples. That said, there are times you get to witness how talented Kanye is as a rapper, as well as a writer. * I knew I recognised that when we listened to King Crimson!

I really do try to separate art from artist when listening to these albums (although once again, fuck you, Brian Warner). Kanye, though? That's a tough one... ...thankfully for the bit of my brain that wants to instantly give the dickhead a 1/5, there's plenty for me to dislike. For a start, I don't much like his voice or flow while rapping and I genuinely cannot stand his singing voice. He's comically poor when trying to be melodic. Some of the tracks also do not even slightly justify their running time. The multiple circa 6 minute tracks rarely had enough ideas to support that. I hate skits and despite not generally disliking Chris Rock, I despised his nonsense on this album. I didn't mind a few of the tracks, I strangely liked Nicki Minaj's contribution (despite her also being an extremely problematic individual) and I like a fair few of the actual beats but all in all, I don't understand why this gets such praise. Even pre-Nazification Kanye wouldn't be something I'd want to listen to judging by this record. 1/5 for the human being 2/5 for the record (and that's generous)

Such a great fucking album. The compositions that Kanye created are so unique and engaging. The features he includes are so diverse and uncommon on hip hop records, even today, yet they work together so harmoniously here. It's not my favorite Kanye record, but it's probably right behind my #1.

It's a hodgepodge of styles, mostly poorly sung pop music, produced to hell with so much ProTools gimmickry and Vocoder-type mangling that it comes across as AI music before AI was a thing. I mean that in the worst way possible. This is not for me, I find it horrible. Not to mention how much Kanye weirds me out in general. He comes across so delusional megalomaniac that I'm having issues with anything he says.

Great album. Artist is obviously controversial, and I haven't liked anything he has put out for quite some time, but definitely was innovative and unique. I really enjoyed the listen. I already knew many of the songs, but haven't listened to it all the way through. 4.5 stars

I think I'm in a minority (of one?) when it comes to Kanye: rap is my favorite genre yet I never liked him, ever since hearing Through the Wire way back when. His rapping, flow, lyrics, all tiresome and weak with an occasional good beat. His production for other artists was always better. I feel that the people who *do* like him musically are not necessarily rap fans. Oh, and there is all that other stuff... Guess I was on the right side of history from the beginning, there was something off about him from the start.

It’s fine. Some really good classic tracks but I don’t think all hit the spot. Wouldn’t choose to have this on really.

I've always felt conflicted about this record, I could never see the grand claims it gets as his best work etc. I find some of it just over indulgent and the maximalism just isn't for me. However, there are some undeniably excellent tunes here ('All Of The Lights', 'Lost In The World') when the focus is tighter and I think they will always stand up.

Considering all of the obviously awful stuff out of Kanye in recent years, this is actually a jolting listen - it's so much better than anything he's done post Life of Pablo. Take 'Gorgeous' - 'Jerome gets more time than Brandon' is a sharper, funnier, far better way of getting to the point he spends three minutes noodling around on 'Jail' from his more recent work. 'Dark Fantasy' a brilliant opener and one I'd forgot about. The bangers are absolute bangers, the features incredible - the sheer contempt that Pusha T gets across in 'Runway' blows me away every time, the 'Monster' verses, etc. It sits alongside very few albums I've ever listened to that just work as a cohesive piece of art.

As much as I wanted to not like this album, I can’t deny that the production is incredible. Some incredible verses even if many of the people involved are absolute garbage. Reluctantly I must say that I really enjoyed this and I do, unfortunately, get the hype.

There are some beautifully arranged backing tracks on this 'Magnum Opus' of a Kanye West album, especially on tracks like Power, All Of The Lights, and particularly The Blame Game. But at some point in the song you just know that the droning prick will start his noise! It's just depressing! West clearly has issues - he even sings about being a Monster - but dressing his narcissism and misogyny up and parading it through his album, exposing his flaws, doesn't make him a genius! Damn, its hard to listen to this and not get upset at what Kanye has turned into. He really pours it on with this whole album, yes, he's an incredibly egotistical dickhead, but man he earns his accolades. You can hear the meticulous detail he put into the whole project, it really was the next level of his artistry, like he broke through the already impossible high ceiling he was at. Great tracks one after another, featured artists are utilized perfectly. As soon as All of the Lights started, boom, I was instantly brought back to the first time I heard it. What I really love here is how well this whole album flows together, cohesive to a T. One issue, and this is 100 percent personal and I'm sure I'll catch hell for it, but I could never stand Runaway, it just hits the part of my brain that makes it unlistenable to me. pretty easy 5 though!

Kanye’s magnum opus. Not his best album but certainly the one he put his whole pussy into. If anyone needs an example of music as capital “A” art this is it. Just a beautiful, tragic, heartbreaking and raw look at fame, the life that comes with it and who a person can become when consumed by it. The production is immaculate, Kanye’s got some really funny bars and every guest brings their A game. It sucks who Kanye became but weirdly you can see this album as a crossroads for him. The beginning of him giving into his darkest desires and worst tendencies. Hang this shit in the fucking Louvre

This is a good album with a few incredible songs. Sometimes the features get to be too much - Monster and So Appalled would have done better off the record and the rest of the album would have benefitted from it. He hid those right in the middle, where this album is its dullest. The highs of this album are really, really good. The way Ye does it, the thing he's best at. It's really interesting and fun for the most part. Though a lot of the lyrics are just disrespectful and I don't really care for them. The instrumental is phenomenal and the performance is great. A few things drag this project down more than I can ignore though. 3.3/5

Very good album. While starting with Kanye at his usual bombastic self, it also sees him come to terms with the media’s perception of him at the time, as his album persona spirals to the end of the album. It’s a unique theme of an album, seeing yourself become a worse person as you gain power and fame, but feeling helpless to do anything about it, or (more likely) simply complacent. There’s an extra layer of irony considering the Kanye West we know today. As for the sound, wow does this album sound good. It plays with so many different ideas and samples, it’s a really engaging listen throughout. There were definitely moments I wasn’t super high on (Particularly the ending of Blame Game goes on for too long), but there are also some fantastic songs. It deserves all the praise it gets frankly.

The production on this album is great, but it’s overshadowed by Kanye’s ego. I was rolling my eyes at his perceived slights and crude lyrical attempts before the second track ended. How many times can one person talk about balls and assholes?

The last of the great Kanye West albums in my humble opinion. I personally never cared for 'Yeezus' or everything else that followed, but I'm getting off topic. Reading about the production and recording process here isn't surprising, given the artistry of Kanye West. He really set out to make this his magnum opus, pulling in pretty much anyone in the music industry that you can think of at the time (Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, and COUNTLESS others...) It's all very grandiose, but doesn't really lose its way or alienate the listener. I mean, Kanye is the modern poster boy for "rockstar with an inflated ego", but he totally leans into his character and looks inward here. Lest I forget to mention the meticulous production and tasteful sample work all throughout (the album notably ending with samples from Gil Scott-Heron's always relevant "Comment #1") I may have a few nits to pick with some lyrical choices as well as that odd skit from Chris Rock, but this really is Kanye's magnum opus in my eyes. Remember when Kanye's most controversial moments were publicly declaring that George Bush hated black people and interrupting the VMAs? Funny looking back...

Say what you rightfully will about the man, but back in the day Kanye made some real masterpieces. This album in particular is what got me not only into rap but listening to music seriously in general, listening to albums in full and engaging with them in a meaningful way. A part of me wishes somebody else's album did that for me but here we are. I miss the old Kanye.

Best Song: Runaway I didn't want to like this because Kanye is, well, batshit crazy. But, sadly I just couldn't do it. This is a great album and deserves the praise that it gets. There are great tracks on here including Runaway (my personal favorite), Hell of a Life, and Monster. Maybe Kanye's next album I can hate, here's to hoping. 5/5.

Once again, I need to decide how to rate a Kanye West album. Obviously, it's one where you need to try and separate the art from the artist. Kanye became a pretty awful person in recent years, which won't surprise anyone. Regardless of what you may think of his music, it's pretty hard to imagine anyone defending his personal antics in any way, aside from acknowledging mental health difficulties. Interesting by the way that this album contains criticism of Donald Trump many years before Kanye tried to be friends with him. Anyway, we all know about this stuff, so let's put it aside. I don't love all of Kanye's albums, but I have to admit that this one is brilliant. It's a really fresh take on hip hop, really varied, maximal, and with a host of great guests. Turning Aphex Twin's "Avril 14th" into a hip hop song doesn't seem like it should work as well as it does (ignore by the way, the fact that Kanye tried to steal this initially before giving Richard James a writing credit). I really hate that I love this one.

Revisitar MBDTF foi uma excelente experiência - tendo Runaway e All of the Lights como as minhas músicas favoritas do projeto. Poor human being, but man does he make some outstanding music. One of my favorite rap albums of all time. I think Gorgeous might be a perfect song.

Honestly it’s probably more like 3.5 for me. The album’s good, I love the instrumental and dynamic, but I don’t really listen to this type of music. I like some sort of aggressiveness here but some topics and techniques are not exactly in the spirit of what I would listen to. Probably won’t listen to the whole album again.

"Runaway" was amazing, everything else was also generally good, but I can't say I understood why he's considered genius. As a producer/songwriter — yes, definitely, this I can hear. The flow, however, was kinda boring for me. Nevertheless, this felt deeply personal and dramatic, there's a character in this album. It's not entirely about making great songs and success overall, because there is an attempt of being honest in the emotional narcissistic self-reflective tornado.

I think for me this album would’ve been a lot better if Kanye was not such an egotistical maniac even at the time of recording this album, the over the top nature of this album encapsulates him as a person perfectly and not in a good way. There are some good songs on this album however it’s also undercut by how fragile he is as a person, he literally couldn’t go without referring the fish stick joke made about him South Park. Some of the features have also aged quite poorly with Minaj being one of those people. I think it has its moments but overall a pretty ok album

An hour of a twat telling me how he's the best and how much money he's got isn't going to work for me. This is one of those albums where the world was a bit better before I heard it. He's undeniably a better producer than rapper, but then he tries singing and he really can't do that. One of those rare albums where the world seems a worse place after having listened to it.

Man, this was great start to finish

There's no denying that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was massively influential and had great songwriting that many other artists could not compare to, but it's also an album that became more difficult to listen to over the years (and it's not just because of Kanye). MBDTF was a masterpiece when it came out, and Kanye alongside a couple of the featured artists were seen as pillars that held the genre of hip-hop strong and tall, yet it all came crashing down. Personally, the words and actions committed by certain people who were involved in the creation of this album make me not want to listen to the music, but I won't forget what this album used to be. If I were rating it back when it came out it would definitely be a 5/5, but nowadays I simply rate it a 3/5.

If only Kanye West wasn't an awful human being. I guess I'll separate the art from the artist on this one. Honestly I did not think I'd enjoy this album as much as I did. First of all, I was surprised at how many songs I recognized. Other than that, Monster was pretty entertaining even if a bit crass. Could've done without the long interlude with Chris Rock complimenting a lady's sexual prowess. I also enjoyed Lost in the World with Bon Iver. So many featured artists. Kanye why did you have to go off the deep end? 4/5

Not my thing at all so I was expecting to hate it but it wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating.

Fuck Kanye and fuck Nazis. Because of that 1/10 (plus this was what I agreed to so I could justify giving College Dropout a 5) To talk about this one musically, I don't really know. I understand why most of his fans consider this his magnum opus. For a guy known for always known for his maximalist and grandiose sound, this is perhaps his "most" album, if that makes sense. And there is a lot that works for it. POWER and All Of The Lights are hits for reasons. Monster may be carried by Nicki but goddamn does she kill it (another part of this album that hasn't exactly aged well) and I actually think the albums opening and close really strong. That being said there is a lot here that doesn't quite deserve the hype. Runaway is a decent song but not the masterpiece a lot of people believe it to be. Blame Game goes on and on. Songs like So Appalled and Gorgeous are just kinda... there for me. It's certainly not bad but not a top 5 hip hop record like some people believe it to be. 7/10 but 1/10 due to the Nazi tax.

This was an amazing listen, this album explored so many themes from being black in America, the cost of fame and influence and the beauty of it, the complexity of relationships, and the inner conflict with self to the extension of other. Love the creativity in this album. This album is one of the markers of the revolution of HipHop.

I was thirteen when this album came out. This was the best summer of my life. My friends and I had enough autonomy to spend the days outside from 8 am to ~ whenever my mom called and asked if I was spending the night at a friends house. We were late to the game, but this was the summer of Kanye West and rap music. Funny thinking back, imagining a group of 8 of the whitest kids you've ever seen riding bikes and scooters and skateboards in a California suburb. Hell, my baseball team would play this nonstop when the coaches weren't listening. But there we were, young, dumb, and newly acquainted to rap, straight from the greatest rap album of all time nonetheless. I think I might have listened to this album 100+ times that summer. It changed the concept of music for me, and changed what I believed music could be. I had absolutely no connection to the lyrics, the style, or the messaging in any of these songs, but man, I couldn't get enough. Fast forward to 2026. Kanye, for all intents and purposes, is a despicable human being. I have no good words to say for or about him. I do not respect him or his beliefs on any level. His music post TLOP is unlistenable, for both its musical contents, antisemitism, and its message. I will not listen to a new Kanye album ever again. Separating the art from the artist, this is a perfect album, and one of the 5 greatest albums of all time, to me. Fuck Kanye West, forever and always; but you can not deny this masterpiece. Nostalgic, great tracks

This is an incredible album! Unfortunately I'm more familiar with the drama than the music. But in digging in my son's collection I've become more of a fan of the music. This one is definitely a modern classic, in my opinion.

Before: Oh, this is a nice surprise after what I've been presented with lately. Of course I'm referring to the music, not the person. Apparently he is not a very good human being but I don't know about that as I don't follow popular culture, at all. I've listened to this album before when working on my favorites by year list but for some reason I have it on my 2011 instead of 2010 list. I have Power on there at number 40 and Runaway at 17 out of 42 for the year. Of course I have them in the wrong so year so will need to fix that. It's been a few years since I listened to this, maybe I'll find some more to add to my 2010 list. During: Dark Fantasy is a good one. Also Gorgeous, POWER, Monster, Runaway. The rest I didn't care for too much. After : I'm going to rate it a 4. I think it has some really good tracks but most of it is not my cup of tea.

Meh when it came out. Even more meh now. Huuuuuuuge drop off from his first few albums.

Can I completely see past Kanye’s current problems? Probably not. But this is an album with great beats, and samples that pull from a lot of cool places (king crimson, Gil Scott-heron,etc). The lyrics are decent but no big revelations for me there. Not a bad listen in the end.

Kanye West went in Alex Jones's show info wars and said the following: "Every human being has something of value that they brought to the table. Especially Hitler." It's the 'especially' that hits the ear hard there. It's not 'even Hitler', we could brush that off as some kind of see the humanity in everyone feel-goodery. But it was especially. As in Hitler brought more value to the table than your average person. It's very comically worded, and it would be hilarious of it wasn't so awful. But I'm not going to kid myself, Kanye's first few albums, culminating with this one are masterpieces. He lets talented people sing and rap on this one. He samples actual music and melody. He uses a full vocabulary to craft his lyrics. It's not only great in isolation, it's genuinely astonishing to listen to how inventive, layered and creative this is compared to his new music. Like Michael Jackson or Frank Sinatra before him, this is an amazing album by a genuinely awful person. He has a song called 'Heil Hitler' now as well just in case you're not convinced

I don't regret listening to this at all. As horrible of a man Kanye is, his music defined an era, and are undeniably iconic. I cant believe it took me this long to properly listen to his music. Absolutely deserves its place of the list as probably one of the most influential albums of all time (for better or for worse). However I can’t really see myself listening to much of this again

The main problem with this album is that its by Kanye West. That aside, it still sucks. The bad songs all somehow lasted ages whereas the alright songs were comparatively shorter unfortunately. I did myself the disservice of reading the lyrics and I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see exactly the sort of stuff I was expecting- bad language just for the sake of it and misogyny.

To me, this is an undeniably exceptional album, the production is masterful and innovative and I would 100% come back to it. I surprisingly only knew 2 of the songs before and while I'd still say they're my favourites (Power and Runaway) I don't think there were any letdowns or dull moments throughout.

I'm finding it hard to separate my hatred for Kanye West from this album. Some songs were good, however some were awful. 2.5 rounded down

Horrible person, okay music. Moderately cool backing that gets boring in the course of tracks that go for too long. Up In The Woods sample is distasteful.

No skips incredible rap album kanye’s magnum opus

Fuck me. Why do bad/troubled people have to make great music. This was great, and that sucks because of what Kanye has become. God damnit. Purely from a music level, this was amazing. Production was great, beats were great, and the instrumentals were phenomenal. I do feel it was a touch bloated and there are definitely some savings time wise that could be made on this album to make it even better and hit harder. Blame Game, for instance, was a bit of a pain to listen to, especially the conversation tagged onto the back end. Also some instrumental sections feel long for the sake of being long. Other than that, flawless.
