Strong reject.
Нравится, как звучит альбом в целом, но не зацепилась. ┐('～`;)┌ Возможно, хип-хоп не совсем мой жанр, а текст больше актуален для американских реалий. Стоит послушать его еще пару раз.
Well, I gave college dropout a 3 so this one’s got to be a 4. I’m able to see why Kanye has blown up in popularity, but I’m still going to dispute that he’s an “artistic genius”. Maybe on the grounds of modern pop hip hop, I can understand why he grabs so many peoples attentions. But, when actually analyzing, all I see him doing is glueing a bunch of other peoples art together, throwing stream of consciousness lyrics on top, and looping it. On top of that, a lot of his songs are like exhibit a for the concept of projection. Every song is about himself, his ego, and his utterly unthinkably deep lack of self awareness. What’s most nauseating is how many people parrot his egoic verbal diarrhea and bow down to worship the almighty Ye just because a bipolar narcissist figured out how to mix shit in a studio. A. It’s innovative AF for hip hop (but, really is it when you just rely on sampling for all your shit?) B. It appeals to the masses with its simplicity C. It couldn’t possibly have been bad with the amount of collaborative talent involved Credit where credit is due for this albums success, but no I don’t think he’s that talented of a musician. He’s talented at being a celebrity and controversial media masturbation fodder figure.
Another great sounding hip hop record. I really had no idea how talented Kanye West is. Yes the record is too long but I hardly notice because each song real substance and stands on its own as a piece. The longer songs never wear out their welcome. A testament to his inate ability to keep things flowing and accessible. Some more listens might bring this to 5 stars but for today...4.5 🌟
I don't like Kanye's personality but I have to admit that this album had some good production on it. But I enjoyed the guest singers' voices more than his own.
I feared listening to this, based on my perception of Kanye West as a personality. But in truth, the album is intriguing, engaging, and entertaining. Along the way, there are a few moments where the lyrical compositions deter, but the ambition and cinematic scale of the sounds win through. Surprisingly good.

I don't really like listen to rap, but Kanye continues to surprise me on this list. Everything on here has its place, and it gels! ... The only real miss here is 'Monster', and I suspect it is a 'I really don't like Nicki Minaj at all'. Given this isn't my genre, I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt here. The fact that I'm even considering a 5 here (for a rap album!) means it's gotta take it
Yeah its powerful for sure...with that said, I have to separate the artist from the art...with that said as well, at least its better than a lot of the generic rap out there...maybe given time I'll appreciate the message more.

You're spoiling me, 1001 gen. This is a nearly flawless Hip Hop album that combines excellent performances, top tier instrumentals, and an appreciation to the artistry of music. On top of all that, this was probably the album that helped me truly get into Hip Hop music, so thanks ye. Favorites: Dark Fantasy, POWER, So Appalled, Devil In A New Dress, Runaway
It's hard for me on this one to separate the art from the artist. It just seems like a long album of self indulgent narcissistic ramblings.
Too self-indulget, too slow, and WAY TOO LONG. I've tried, because people say he's a genius, to "get" Kanye. But I just don't get him, I don't understand the appeal of the music. I liked the songs POWER and Monster. So there were a couple of bright spots on the album. Wasn't a fan, and/or activly hated the rest.

Ah, disappointing. I find Kanye the most entertaining when he’s producing garbage and telling me it the greatest music ever made. This was reasonably good. Not genius, but reasonably good. At least it’s not Chipmunk Crap or vocodered to hell. This guy is a joke to me, I would love to tell him that. 🤡🤡🤡

Dark Fantasy is great. Sadly I mostly know Kanye through his public persona, which is "complicated". The language in rap often makes me feel like it's not a space meant for me, but the music is enjoyable. I was also surprised at the variety and consistent freshness of album's songs.

It's been a while since I've heard many of these songs. Honestly a good album with some cool features. Hearing Nikki Minaj brought me back to middle school. Definitely some bangers on here. You should listen at least once.

Hip hop really isn't a genre a follow, but I enjoyed the album. Interesting grooves.
Beautiful production, nice lyrical content in most songs, but definitely some glaring weak spots. Overall would say it’s DEFINITELY overrated; I don’t think this is his Magnum Opus. Very long winded and drawn out, probably could’ve been 10-15 minutes shorter. Features were spotty; Nicki on Monster was a highlight, as were the features on Gorgeous and John Legend on Blame Game. Jay Z and Fergie were not great. 7/10.
Really really great record here. Lyrically, there were moments that I enjoyed. Musically, from the beats to the production, this was solid AF. Not quite at the 5 star mark for me yet, but this was better than College Dropout (the only other Kanye album I've heard).

Well, let's see how much of this I can stomach. I'm not really inclined to separate my feelings for this egotistical asshole from his music. Honestly, had no one ever heard experimental music before? Go listen to some Nurse, or Coil, or SPK, or Lustmord, or any of a thousand bands who did this long before Kanye showed up. I'd give this overhyped pile of crap less than one star if I could.

Musically pretty good. Good production value a lot of good use of instruments and effects. Songs are pretty mediocre with rich people talking crap about other rich people. Not rally my thing 2.5
Prog-rap? Yeah, I think so. Kanye might be a huge douche and kind of insane but this record *is* pretty amazing sounding. Lyrically it has some pretty problematic spots but it's also pretty funny. This isn't my genre and I'm probably not going to revisit much but it's a fascinating listen. Totally get why this is on the list.
Separate the man (colossal egoist) from the art (incredibly well produced hip hop album) and this is a banging record. I've never listened to one of his albums before but I enjoyed this way more than I expected.
It feels so different when every single song absolutely bangs. Damn. Very few of the songs miss the mark. And Runaway might just be one of the best songs. Period.

Kanye West has gone off a deep end so profound that he can bring down an established three day music festival just by being named as its headlining act. Sponsors ran fast – the prevalent feeling being one that, for risks to brand reputation of this scale, there’s no returns policy. The mega cash cow of Brand Ye might be RIP, but it’s still debated as to whether there’s any conceivable way back for Kanye the artist. This album serves as a potent reminder for why some might secretly hope there is. It’s a maximalist triumph, full of discourse defining rhymes and super slick hooks. There’s a grandiose onanism to the whole thing; it might be recession pop’s most important record. Anyway, fuck Nazis ✌🏼
Kanye's music largely passed me by in a blur over the last decade, so I'm pleased this was the first 1001 album recommended to me. It challenged me to dip into the Kanye archive post-College Drop Out/ Late Registration. Aside from 'All of the Lights' which I'd have had to have been living under a rock to avoid, there's essentially nothing on this album I recognise. Of course there's the unmistakable scattering of auto-tune vocals from Justin Vernon, the Bon Iver electronica, the customary hip hop sampling of Sabbath's Iron Man and cameos in a volume akin to an Adam McKay movie. But in terms of hit singles, radio airplays and stuff that might've seeped into my subconscious...nothing. Says more about me than the album, of course. But I've so often been put off Kanye's music by the hyperbole and absurdity that goes along with its release. In a way, this album reinforces my preconceptions. Everything about it screams 'Kanye', from the production to the occasional but desperately dumb lyrics. "Let's have a toast for the douchebags..." being a prime example. "I sent this bitch a picture of my d**k..." being another. In fact, ultimately what I realised is that I mostly like everything on this album that's not Kanye. Jay-Z brings some calm and class to two back to back tracks in the middle; RZA brings some proper hip hop flow. Vernon brings some quality and production innovation, whilst Sabbath bring a nod to heavy metal and even Nicky Minage brings...something. But Kanye just feels like the awkward and unnecessary spare wheel; which is quite the feat given it's his album. He's like the rich kid who's paid all his classmates to come on holiday with him. They'll all have a good time dining out at his expense whilst he spends the entire week whinging. Kanye's self-awareness has become beyond parody, and you can definitely hear and feel where the genesis for all that started in this album. I hope College Drop Out is in the 1001 list because I'd sooner be listening to and writing about that album.
I'm not in love with Kanye as a person, but goddamn if his peak as an artist wasn't absolutely incredible. This album is just song after song of incredible samples and production with excellent lyrics over it. Consistently good throughout the entire album, and often absolutely great 5/5

It reminded me that I like Kanye
Oh boy, I was intimidated going into this one. One of the biggest albums of my lifetime- what more can be said by a hip-hop newbie? What if I hate it? But nope- undoubtedly one of the best hip-hop albums I've heard. Despite being a blockbuster (in everything from maximalist production to roster of A-list guests) it has such a tight focus for most of its runtime as it bounces from one set-piece to another. I surely don't need to heap more praise on the opening rhyme and epic introduction to "Dark Fantasy"- the swaggering bravado of "POWER" and its inspired King Crimson sample- the anthemic wall of sound in "All of the Lights"- THAT Minaj verse in "Monster" which was my highlight of the whole album. This latter track had my favourite lyrics and beats across the board and set the high watermark for the record, so that "So Appalled" and "Devil in a New Dress" paled in comparison by feeling too repetitive and not demanding my attention. It was also around this time that I started to feel the length of the journey. But then came "Runaway": a gorgeous track I hadn't heard before and an absolute stand-out, striking me as the emotional and thematic heart of the set, where all the excess just came together and made perfect sense. It could have been a closer, but then "Lost in the World" and "Who Will Survive" formed a powerful note to go out on. Why not 5*? Needs more listens, but partly the middling songs mentioned above, and also the skin-crawling Chris Rock skit in Blame Game with the "Yeezy taught me" mantra. One of several uncomfortable moments where the arrogance stopped feeling ironic or satirical and just seemed like Kanye being Kanye. For the most part though, this was a roller-coaster and I believed the hype.

First Listen. Very good. Like to hear more. Low 2/5 for now. Standout is Runaway. This is an amazing song, start to finish. I think I may have heard it before, because it sounded familiar but when it started I was totally focused on it the whole time.
I'm normally not too big into these kind of albums, however after hearing this I have to say that this was bloody amazing. Does a good job in making each song diverse than the last. Despite being rap. POWER and All Of The Lights are magical.
I am just starting and am not a huge fan of Kanye at the start....but this album is very solid.

First of all, I’m not gonna act like I’m not going to give it a straight 5. I believe this is one of the great highlights of this century and a record for the generations, so there is that. Is this the best work by Ye? Arguable but there are at least another 4 records that are up for title. Is this my favorite Ye album? No, I have an emotional attach to The College Dropout for that matter. is this his last great work? NO, he kept it up for another 8 years. Is Donda a work as focused as this? No, to me he lost it after KSG. There is so much around this one that’s worth the mention, how this was Kanye’s redemption after the deplorable Taylor incident, the cringe in some of the lyrics, the effort in Pusha’s verse, the complete triumph of Nicki’s verse, the laughs we had with Jay Z’s one, the stupid but somehow guilty pleasure of the Chris skit, the memes, the samples, Fantano’s review, the aesthetics… It all shows how influential this was but the only reason for that is the music. Yes, Kanye is very limited singing and not as good MC as he thinks, but the production and innovation of this one goes really to new horizons, almost everyone is at their top game for this one and Ye really did come up with a cohesive and really impressive album. As I said one of the great recordings of our times. I’m always up for a toast for this one.

Honestly? Yeah, okay, I'm about it. He's got some chops and the music itself is legit.
I like 99 rappers but Kanye ain't one. I remember hearing his first couple of albums and wasn't a huge fan. Then I heard this one, and I can at least observe there's some ambition, but it put me off listening to any more of his stuff. Interesting, I had this and Charles Mingus TBSATSL in close proximity: both have long titles, dark themes, and are explorations of the artist's tortured psyche. One is an artistic masterpiece and the other is mostly self-indulgent rubbish. On the plus side, I like some of the production on this, esp the early tracks. And I like Kanye's flow when he actually raps properly, which is really the first few tracks. The bad points are that this is a disorganised mess of an album with a million collaborators used as a substitute for overall design. Kanye's vocals disappear for the whole middle part of the album, and we have a sea of unenjoyable guest spots. For me, the worst element is the lyrics. I can't help but pay lots of attention to lyrics if they are present in a piece of music - it's just the way my brain works. In hip-hop especially, well-crafted lyrics are one of the main sources of greatness. Most of Kanye's are just toxic ramblings about his actual arsehole and also how much of an arsehole he himself is (but he's self-aware, so that makes it art). I even had a look at the AllMusic review to see what I'm missing here. Andy Kellman writes in his glowing 4.5* review, "As the ego and ambition swells, so does the appeal, the repulsiveness, and -- most importantly -- the ingenuity." Does it though?? "Whether loved or loathed, fully enjoyed or merely admired, this album should be regarded as a deeply fascinating accomplishment." Should it though?? I'm barely even interested in the personal lives of musicians whose work I love, so I'm really not sold on the idea of poring over the unenjoyable album of an egomaniac celebrity like it's a fascinating document. It's halfway to hot garbage. Edit: also, I don't require music to have a social message or agree with any of my own beliefs, but I also want to add that casual misogyny ruins many hip-hop albums for me. I don't have any time for it, and it makes me doubt whether I want to listen to this person talking for the next 40-50 mins. (Or in Kanye's case, 70 mins.)
Guess I'll go ahead and rate this before it gets any worse. Kid Rock and Kanye back-to-back is one hell of a stretch. Nonetheless, this album is phenomenal. When a song as good as So Appalled is the low point of the first 9 songs for me, you know this is generational. Production is so over-the-top but it's beautiful and it works. AOTL interlude, something I often forget about in the album, is so well done. Two of the best feature verses ever in my opinion from Nicki and Ross. Like all of my favorite Kanye albums, there are some low points - the Chris Rock feature on Blame Game (rest of the song is good) wears out its welcome about a minute in, even if I found it hilarious the first time I heard it, and I still don't really like Hell Of A Life, even if the interpolation of Iron Man is pretty cool. Still, this is one of the most complete albums I've ever heard - there's a reason this is almost universally considered one of Kanye's best. Maybe he needs another isolated retreat to Hawaii. That being said, there's just something about this album that just keeps it from 5 status. There are parts of the album that are very good and it's certainly well produced, but there are some massive horrors in there, which perhaps point to a troubled mind. I liked Monster and So Appalled.
Love this album to death. Sure, some songs have problems, like Jay on monster or Kanye naming different kinds of lights on all of the lights, just sort of goofy. But Kanye has some of his best bars of all time the production is immaculate, the other songs are so strong as to make it a full score for me in spite of some glaring flaws.
I can go on and on about this album. It's great. It really is. I have heard this one before so I was prepared for another listen. Kanye West's somewhat magnum opus, and as I do enjoy stuff like TCD more, you have to admit that this is Kanye's most important album... not his best, but his most important in what its done. This somewhat mix of Graduation & 808s (especially present in songs likr Runaway or Lost In The World) is grand. Kanye takes on issues in songs likr Goregous, talking about how everyone views him as a black man and just as himself. Especially after the taylor swift drama. He brings on Cudi for a great hook and Raekwon for the last, killer verse. This album is also all sorts of bragadocious. In Monster & So Appalled, two very different posse cuts each verse is filled to the brim with less introspectivity and more lines about themselves, in a good light. And god some guest verses are just unforgettable. Pusha's in Runaway, CyHi in So Apalled, and even Rick Ross in Devil In A New Dress. What seems to be this soulful, personal song Kanye builds up is enlightened by this guitar solo followed by a killer Rick Ross verse. And also, Runaway. Runaway is up there in some of my favorite songs of all time. Kanye brings an emotional topic of basically "everyone should runaway from me, i suck" to simplify it. Some of Kanye's vocals are stellar and even the autotune at the end of this behemoth of a track, god. Even songs i highly disliked have grown on me. Hell Of A Life is a song i can appreciate for its lengths it goes to, and hey All Of The Lights is just a banger. One song i really can't see much in the light of is Blame Game. I love John Legend but his hook is just so lame. Kanye's storytelling is great but, i dom't know. The lyricism just kinda falls flat, especially with that long Chris Rock skit at the end kind of destroying that build up at the end. I still love the beat, its one of the best one of the albums, but god i just can't vibe with the lyricism and vocal effects. Overall a good song but not one of my favorites. Finally, Lost In The World. We're all expecting it. A big, final, closer to this record. A finale. But then we're greeted with autotuned Justin Vernon. As it builds up, all we can do is wait. The instrumental kicks in and there it is. My favourite album of all time. The songs are composed perfectly with amazing samples and great production from Kanye. The features are great. The range and variety of the songs from absolute bangers to more emotional ones. And runaway with the piano section is just the best!!!!

Yes, I've heard of Kanye (that quote about George Bush, but Kanye's still willing to wear a silly red hat). No, I don't think that I've listened to any of his music. This album did not do Kanye any favors. The content of the lyrics... yeesh. No reason to listen to this. There's musical talent, but apparently the album gave room for a full expression of Kanye's character.

(Listened to Before) Had this on repeat in middle school and listening back I have a similar opinion on it still. Some of my favorite Kanye songs are on here, but there’s also some mediocre cuts. Think this is maybe his 4th or 5th best album, but it’s still one of the most important and era-defining projects ever dropped. The production blows my mind for most of it and even on some of the tracks I don’t care for Kanye raps his ass off. This album really is incredible start to finish. Kanye is at his best but honestly it's the featured artists and production that take this to the next level.
Middle tracks dragged a bit, but solid Kanye. Showed glimpses of the madness that was going to come (Chris Rock stand-up bit talking about pussy and the woman learning how to be dirty from Yeezy). Earlier collabs with Bon Iver.
I can appreciate rap and although the production of this album is excellent the subject matter sucks.
I quite enjoyed this but lost interest during the profane sex and "gangster" sections. Not what I was expecting - musically diverse. 3.5 out of 4
Out of all the people in the entire world, I believe Kanye West is one of the hardest people to take serious (on non-music topics). And not being a rap fan in general, this is the first time I ever consciously heard his music. But damn, this is actually really good, interesting and musically varied. The one big downside being any time West tries to do anything melodious with his voice. That sounds pretty bad and he should definitely stop doing that. Still, this is definitely the best rap album I've ever heard - which would put it at a 4 for me in terms of enjoyment. But I'll give it a 5 instead to show my appreciation for broadening my mind to what rap can sound like and how good it can be.
One of the modern classics. Kanye at his most self-aware, teetering on the edge of hedonism and trying not to fall into the void. Production is beyond incredible, features are fire, songwriting is incredible. If I had one criticism, its that Chris Rock's little skit goes on a tad long.

It’s hard to be objective on this one as I think Kanye is a massive cunt and none of his recent albums come close to College Dropout and Graduation but there’s some absolute bangers hidden in here such as Power, All of the Lights, Gorgeous and Runaway. I remember Monster being a big hit but after listening to it back, it’s just awful commercialised Poprap. Gorgeous is criminally underrated and Kid Kudi deserves more respect than he gets. All in all, 3/4 good tunes doesn’t push the MBDTF ranking much higher. If I was allowed to, I’d give it a 2.5 for reasons above.
IMO this is a genuine modern masterpiece. Gets better everytime I listen to it, matures like a fine wine. Oozes with creativity, uniqueness, influence, soul and is chocked full of bangers and the most amazing set of featured artists (eg. All of the Lights). If this isn't a 5* album then nothing that we get from the 2010s should be.

Very well put together and an impressive roster of featured artists. POWER is the standout but love the autotuned harmonies on Lost in the World. Unfortunately much of the album lacked the oomph which would make me want to listen again.
Besides a fer not so hard hitting songs in the second part of the album (Blame game, Hell of a life) this album is an hip-hop masterpiece. It's hard to even call it straight up hip-hop, because it incorporates multiple genres from soul, edm, folk, rock etc.

I really want to kate Kanye, I always have, and yet hes so fucking good at this stuff. I can hate him and love what he makes, right? This is almost perfect hip hop, as are all his albums, annoyingly. Just lovely stuff, beautifully produced, interesting, varied, entertaining, innovative, fun, it has it all. I'll just pretend it's not Kanye.
Back in 2010 one of the rare times I listened to a major album the day it was released, first to last track, no breaks, with friends, and it blew me away. Maximum ego. Maximum production. Huge hits. Exciting features (esp Minaj). Engrossing from start to finish. Self indulgant, funny, angry, exhausted, obsessed, juiced up Kanye. Over the top in the best ways. Perfect album. A+
Everyone says this is Kanye’s best album, I think it’s just okay. Part of me thinks the popularity of this album is solely based on Runaway, the only iconic song on this album, IMO. It’s a solid album, don’t get me wrong, but nothing really sticks with me. Kanye is definitely talented at creating a soundscape. As usual l, lots of very clever rhymes throughout. I find I like his gospel chorus sounds overly sincere, not up my alley. I appreciated the King Crimson sample but felt it gets cut off, he could let it play a little more and it would’ve made the song better. Lots of abrupt cuts in his soundscape, themes coming in an out chaotically, changing the song briefly before it goes back to normal, creates an interesting pastiche. Almost all the songs have a epic vibe to them, they feel big, the scale is big. But are they good? The rhyme “put the Pussy in a sarcophagus” just to rhyme with esophagus, seems a little lazy. There are a few fives on this album, few fours, a 2 and a threes. B+

Yes very good, though... most of the highlights are from other rappers/musicians (Nicki in Monster is probably the best sounding part of this album) so still don't really get what the big whoop is about this guy?... only 50% (guessing?) of the lyrics/ stories are written by Kanye on here... and for good reason. Do not rate this guy as a lyricist at all. Some of his content is definitely good, but some is just awfully crass and bigotry.... Hell of a Life - haha What is this? *Hell of an Ego, am I right?? Anyway, it is just not executed well either way. Musically, this deserves more than a 2, but I just can't stand this guy. Makes me fucking sad that this is the most famous musician in the world (is it?). Fighting for one minority while trashing another isn't my idea of a great artist, that's for sure.

Great album. Like someone else said, it is other other features and influences that make this album so great. Not sure if that just speaks to Kayne's ability as a producer or use his clout to get big names and upcoming stars on his record (or if they use his clout for their gain)
Now that I've taken the time to properly listen to this album I feel like I understand why Kanye West is thought of as epic, I definitely thought this album was epic. I found some of the lyrics difficult though which gave me some cognitive dissonance. But yeah glad I had this experience.

A Hip Hop album that has imagination, heart, great samples and 13 tracks its impossible not to appreciate. Every drum beat, every chord meticulously crafted by an absolute fucking mentalist. This is how you do it lads. Genre spanning wizardry. Highlights- the whole fucking thing. 5/5
Well, gotta give credit where credit is due for rhyming "parents" with "seance". There were parts of it I thought sounded good, but it just dragged on, and so much of it was just Kanye talking about how cool he was by all his cool names. Which isn't to say there weren't plenty of lyrically interesting sections, but I don't really want to investigate them enough to relisten. Tough call between a 2 and a three on this one, and it probably would have scored higher if it had been shorter.

Krasses Pop Monster, schillerndes Sampling, kongeniale Instrumentierung, teils spontan wirkende Wendungen und ein Songwriting, das sich komplett auf einem Plateau durchzieht, sodass eine Reihe ebenbürtiger Einzelteile einen top draft schwierig macht, was die longplay Stärke betont. Geiler - was soll ich sagen/wie nennt man das, Hightech-Hiphop? aber ohne die Nerv-Faktoren Autotune und hyperaktives Sample-Geklicker. Supermodern (2010...) und trotzdem voll in meinem wertkonservativen Popsoundgeschmack, und nach 2,5 Durchgängen entsteht der Eindruck, dass das Ding von vorn bis hinten immer runder wird, bis „All of the Lights“, vielleicht auch „Monster“ ist noch bisschen holprig aber ab da fliegt er eigentlich konstant über 36000 Fuß. Hab Yeezy immer vor allem als Phänomen wahrgenommen, zwischen Amüsement und zunehmendem zuneHMENDEM ZUNEHMENDEM Kopfschütteln. Und auch wenn letzteres wohl here to stay ist - dies Album macht echt Bock auf mehr. Fuck it, sorry but not sorry: wenn ich Em für die Marshall Mathers 4 Sterne gegeben hab, kann das hier nicht weniger sein. Let's have a toast for the scumbags!

“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” by Kanye West (2010). My first time listening to the music of Kanye West. Excellent album. Expansively produced. Horizon stretching. Near epic theatricality. My education in hip hop is only on a third grade level, but I appreciate music enough to recognize that this is really good. It’s well constructed as an album, starting with a beautifully engaging, poetic and choral intro. I couldn’t write. I had to zip it and listen. (However, imagine Mila Kunis doing the spoken intro instead of Nicki Minaj, and tell me what you think.) The album then builds in tension and intensity, expressing rage (of course), rack, resentment, regret, remorse, redemption and resolution. Very good collaborative writing and innovative production without being gimmicky. It’s all in service to the music. Many extraordinarily clever turns of phrase in the lyrics, which are intricately woven within the selected constraints of well chosen and disciplined rhyme schemes. Very accessible poetics. Thoughtful and culturally well grounded lyrical themes. Entrancing intros precede conventional but powerful hip hop rhythms. The cello and piano intro to “All of the Lights (Interlude)” followed by the synth-brass/vocal choral (Rihanna and friends) intro to “All of the Lights” is superlative (Elton John [!] on piano after verse 3 and the outro). The howling, haunting male chorus intro to “Monster” is another great example. And what the piano does in the intro to “Runaway” (and throughout) is superb. Let’s have a toast. I like this album, bought this album and intend to listen to it over and over. Moments of weeping and sobbing on only the second listen. So much more could be said, I might follow up with a supplement. The only weakness worth mentioning (and it’s not minor) is that Kanye West’s voice lacks timbre, range, control, and power. He compensates by bringing in better vocalists, but the weakness is pervasive. Otherwise this album would have been a “five”. 4/5

This is a classic album that becomes more fun to listen to the more times you hear it. From coked-out RZA on one of the strangest posse cuts ever to "Yeezy reupholstered my pussy" to a four-minute vocoder solo, MBDTF is a hip-hop tour de force. The quirks and bumps along the way only serve to further the image of a beautiful and twisted modern fantasy, and it's not likely that we will ever get an album that sounds and feels like this again.
I've listened to this album a few dozen times and love a lot of it. Power and Monster are incredible tracks
amazing album. I got a leak before it came out and really prefer the rougher version to what he ultimately went with. Still a killer album with no duds.
I love this album. Only weak links are Gorgeous and So Appalled. These aren’t bad tracks, but the rest of the album is so good that when these songs come on a bit of energy leaves the room.

Peeved I missed the reveal on this one! (Was stalled pouring over the classic Halo 3 soundtrack.) Re-listening for the generator: MBDTF is an absolute joy to listen to. Kanye and the boys, both on the tracks and in the all-star production team assembled in Hawaii for this masterpiece, are firing on all cylinders for 75 minutes. - The SNL line ages better and better as SNL gets less and less funny. - MJ GONE - All of the Lights bridge is an all-timer - Invariably think of the sarcophagus line whenever the word comes up - So Appalled always has me cruising around NY with the boys in slow motion, looking disdainfully at people and throwing money at shit - The day that you play me, would be the same day MTV play videos (another excellently aging line) - Moral victories is for minor league coaches, indeed Jay - Cyhi's "She found about April so she chose to march" section is in my personal pantheon of bars - Looking at my wrist, it turn your ass to stone - Runaway chorus put an excellent soundtrack to my state of mind dropping out of college back in 2014-15. Listened to it and MBDTF in general a lot back then. A decade of semi-conscious resentful alienation finally bubbled to the surface seeing how infuriatingly, heartbreakingly effortless normality and functionality were to my peers. A toast to the douchebags! - The goofy Chris Rock skit at the end of Blame Game grows on me as the years go by. - Lost In the World is one of the greatest closers ever, bar none, but its uplifting perfectly sets up the second phase of our close... - Endlessly fascinated with the compelling closer Who Will Survive In America. Beautifully ominous, Kanye, using the fiery poetry of Gil Scott-Heron, lobs a slow-fuse black bomb as the concluding statement of the album: a quick'n'dirty recap of the besieging of black America - bombs America has constructed and armed that are beginning to detonate again. What a profound accomplishment of an album. Take away all the great records he's made and Kanye would still be an American hero for the incident that led to the creation of MBDTF: interrupting Taylor Swift on stage accepting best music video award or whatever. Every song is single-worthy, and every song should be blared through the speakers. What's a black Beatle worth? A perfect score. 10/10

This was peak Kanye before he started his downward spiral. Killer hooks, samples, features. Feels like the best of this era of mainstream rap. Loved it when it came out, and it's still amazing the whole way through.

So this is apparently Kanye deliberately taking a "maximallist" approach, and it really doesn't work for me. For every element of a song I like, there'll be two or three more annoying elements jammed in. "Blame Game" samples Aphex Twin? Awesome! Oh, it has a 2 minute long Chris Rock skit embedded in it? ಠ_ಠ Fave track - I dunno, "Gorgeous" maybe. I should probably give this 3 stars, but I'm deducting one because Kanye's obnoxious in a way that doesn't entertain me...
Hace un par de meses me dieron ganas de escuchar este disco de nueva cuenta después de varios años y lo escuche durante una semana completa. Ahora, en 24 horas lo he escuchado 5 veces completo. Kanye West es un genio musical, un genio musical con demasiados problemas mentales y que con el pasar de los años ha bajado tanto en calidad e interés artístico como en cordura; pero la cantidad de genio y talento que tiene no se puede negar y en este disco en particular está en su mayor momento. Todo el disco es musicalmente irrepetible, tiene una producción estúpidamente pulida y creativa. Las letras siento nunca han sido su fuerte pero incluso aquí hay atisbos muy interesantes tanto de su personalidad, lo que siente de la fama y, con retrospectiva de 20/20, una mirada a lo que en un futuro terminaría en cosas tan tristes como episodios psicóticos de paranoia a medio concierto. Un disco que mezcla invitados desde Jay Z hasta Elton John pasando por un skit de Chris Rock, con mezclas que incluyen pop de sonido africano, King Crimson, Black Sabbath y Aphex Twins. Es la mejor muestra de lo que era capaz de lograr cuando lograba canalizar sus obsesiones a algo productivo. Canciones como Power o Monster son básicamente perfectas y espesas en todas sus capas tan cuidadas. El único traspié, a mi gusto, es la letra de Blame Game, porque la verdad... hueva tu canción dirigida a tu ex con referencias que solo tu entiendes; pero incluso en ese caso musicalmente no tengo queja alguna, es especialmente oscura y meticulosa en su sonido. Es triste la persona en la que se ha convertido con el tiempo pero nadie puede negar que dentro de el siempre ha habido un artista con todas sus letras.

Trying to forget what Kanye has been up to lately, this album is a perfect hip hop album. It feels almost like progressive hip-hop, or like a rock album with rappers on it. The deliberate production choices all added to it, like the decision to slightly saturate the whole thing.

Esta decisión es muy complicada. Creo que se escucha muy muy bien, tiene mezclas muy bien logradas y coros muy bien utilizados. Creo que hay una clara división en el disco: una mitad trata de que él es un fuera de serie y la gente está contra él y él todo lo puede y no tiene que pedir perdón y él es el mejor y él y él y él y él y él y él. Para decir eso no necesita 34,081 palabras dichas por 18 personas, creo que se entiende el mensaje. La otra mitad es un poco más variada (pussy + relaciones disfuncionales), bueno, no tanto, pero al menos deja ver una parte más humana del autor porque aunque cambia el discurso todo-lo-puedo a todas-mías (pequeña variación) al menos ya habla de alguien con fallas. Creo que es un disco increíble de 45 minutos metido en 68 minutos complicados de aguantar, no por falta de talento, sino que es repetitivo. Para mi es un 3.5 porque quizá vuelva a escuchar un par de canciones pero no me quedaron muchas ganas de escucharlo decir "yo" otra vez, además de que creo que ahora me cae un poco más mal. It's hard to separate the man from the musician, but this album is great despite being made by a shitty person.
This $h!t is F***ing ridiculous!! The best was good and catchy. But honestly it sounds like Kanye had his hand wrapped around his junk the whole time because he was just all about himself. Don’t think I’d listen to this again. Just not good lyrically. The only reason it’s getting 1 star is because the music was good. If there was a karaoke version of this album with no lyrics I’d enjoy that.
“Too many Urkels on your team. That’s why ya wins low” This album is such a great culmination of the beats and rhymes of his first two albums. It definitely showed a changing point for Kanye and you could tell he was starting to unwind as a human and as an artist. The best track for me is “Monster” I use it all the time to show people what a powerful rapper Nicki Minaj is. On a track with Kanye, Rick Ross and one of the all time greats Jay Z, she absolutely steals the track and owns it with her schizophrenic rhyming.

I feel most conflicted over this one because of the personality. Fuck Kanye. But this was his second best album, and as an album, it’s damn good. But at the same time, he’s obviously mentally ill, and that’s none of my business, it just… well poor fucknut has a problem. So that said, I’ll remove the personality and just rate it as an album. Great production up until the last few minutes of Runaway. After that the album dips a little in quality. However the front of this album is purely amazing.
Tuve que escuchar este disco dos veces para “entenderle” bien. La primera vez me aburrió un poco y no le presté la atención adecuada. El disco tiene arreglos musicales interesantes y supongo que fue innovador en el género. Me agradó mucho la canción de “Monster”. Le pongo esta calificación porque algunas canciones se me hicieron tediosas.

debo decir que me sacó de onda el sampleo de Ironman pero ya en la segunda vuelta de algunas rolas la escuche mejor y hasta me gustó, odio que los raperos tengan miles de participaciones y odio a la minaj. Todo lo que le pude agarrar de gusto a Eminem con un disco diez años más viejo no existe en este disco de Kanye. Encima, el contexto de ser el disco que hizo cuando superó su berrinche contra Taylor Swift y, bueno, ser Kanye… No me gusta el autotune y siento que esto fue de lo primero en ponerlo de moda. Runaway es de las rolas que medio me pasan.
Kanye and Coldplay I'll defend them both to death - possibly the most caucasian statement ever made but I stand by it. Yeezy is a genius. So many great moments - All of the Lights, Rick Ross' verse on Devil in a New Dress, every Pusha T verse, Chris Rock's skit at the end of Blame Game, Bon Ivor all over Lost in the World. Hell of a Life is my highlight though. YEEZY TAUGHT ME.

It's pretty good but I am not one of those people who views Kanye as a genius. Monster is a great track, but it's because of Nicki Minaj
Kanye's good, I gotta give it to him. I love the choir and the beats. All of the Lights, Runaway, and Lost in the World are my faves. And Monster - reminds me of Neil rapping along with Nicki.
Kanye is a great producer and a terrible MC.

Not my favorite Kanye album. It's got two or three great songs and several...not so great. Compared to say Graduation, it's not his best.

I really want to kate Kanye, I always have, and yet hes so fucking good at this stuff. I can hate him and love what he makes, right? This is almost perfect hip hop, as are all his albums, annoyingly. Just lovely stuff, beautifully produced, interesting, varied, entertaining, innovative, fun, it has it all. I'll just pretend it's not Kanye.
I liked this Kanye West west album. It featured many rappers that went on to become successful.

Music was surprisingly good. I was able to enjoy it despite not really being into rap all that much. The themes, however, were often questionable. Due to the latter, I probably wouldn't feel comfortable listening to it again.

-Monster is my absolute favorite so far on this album, although All of the Lights and POWER are of course powerhouse breakouts -All of the Lights Interlude is so tender and beautiful--I've never heard it before and now I want it playing as the background to my life - Lost In The Woods is also fantastic
A couple of great moments, but a difficult album to get through for me. Sorry Ye - a headache of a record to my ears.
Was totally not digging it at first, and not just because of the usual stupid hip hop clichés. By the end I had laughed a bit, but all in all I wasn't very impressed and don't get why some people think this record (or Kanye himself) is so great.

Here's another artist where I break from the pack. I do not like Kanye on the whole. I think he's an extremely overrated, egotistical, pampered artist that's been told he's a genius so long that he thinks he's a god. And all of that comes across in his work. His rhymes are decent (if self-indulgent) and his delivery has that lazy "I'ma get to it when I get to it" cadence which isn't my favorite. The production is, of course, off the charts good because it's a Kanye record. It's telling that the best moments on this record are the ones where the guest artists bring heat. The production really IS phenominal, though. And, when I stop and listen to THAT instead of trying to evaluate this record on Ye's bars (like I would any other rap artist), I like this album a lot more. I just can't with these lyrics though. So much shit. Giving it three stars because the production is huge.

Good until the times when it gets really weird and self-indulgent. Then it *really* loses me. But overall good.
I enjoyed listening to this album. While I've not always been a fan of Kanye, I think it's one of his best pieces. "Runaway" is probably my favorite track of his and particularly a bright spot on the album.
First time listening to this album, as Kanye is highly hit-or-miss for me. On the other hand, I really enjoy Yeezus in full and the single cuts from Fantasy are iconic. On balance, this reinforces my notion that middle Ye is the best. While patchy in parts (and the mixing here seems especially meh) and extremely self-indulgent, the highs are like nothing else in hip-hop.
Awful. I couldn't listen to the whole album. I wish I could set fewer than 1 star.
