Catch A Fire

I was expecting more from this album. I've heard so much about Bob Marley, and I thought that this would be some masterpiece in reggae. It was fine. Outside of a couple songs, this album was forgettable. Best Songs: Stir It Up, High or Low Tide Worst Songs: Stop That Train, Kinky Reggae

I just don't get reggae.

I don't appreciate reggae the way that reggae lovers do. The only time I really felt some Joy from listening to reggae was in the '80s when it was popular on local radio stations but to actually sit through a whole album of reggae is difficult for me to do. I'm trying to have some respect for the spiritual aspect of it but I just don't feel in sync with that so out of respect I give this only two stars.

Bob Marley is the absolute epitome of “if you’ve heard one of his/her songs you’ve heard them all”. This album was quite pleasant and chill and sounds nice and everything, but honestly each song is so simplistic and repetitive that they get old before they’re done. One of the least interesting songwriters I’ve listened to in a long time. His songs are so compositionally limited and most use the same basic tropes and progressions. I start to laugh whenever I hear that one cliche reggae drum fill that starts so many of his songs in the exact same way. The appeal of Bob Marley is the unique atmosphere of his music, but really he is a one-trick pony. If I ever get into marijuana I’ll think about giving this one another listen, but until then, I’m good

Never been a big Bob Marley guy, but maybe it was because I wasn’t high enough. It is laid back, but it’s giving me beach vibes. But I don’t love the beach. Nothing wrong here. It’s just me.

Glad to be exposed to all these genres from this website. I knew Stir it Up. I’m not able to appreciate reggae all that much - I don’t think I’m the target audience.

Not really a fan of reggae - everything sounds so similar to me. Was somewhat intrigued by the uniqueness of the opening track, but quickly devolved into the same old tropes. I'm sure this album holds significance for its fans, but it really just isn't for me :(

Not so many smash hits on this one. Stir It Up was the only song I recognized. I thought it was quite a weak record.

It was fine…listened while reading. The tempos of all the songs were very similar, making the album feel a bit monotonous. Favorites: stop that train, stir it up Probably wouldn't turn to listen to this one again.

Admittedly, this is my first Bob Marley album. I've only ever gotten into the hits. It was fine, but the plethora of fade outs really brings an album down for me. It shows that someone can't finish a song when there are too many of them.

I get that this is supposed to be influential, the greater introduction of Bob Marley to the masses and all that, but, honestly, nothing jumped out at me. Telling that with nearly every posthumous compilation, this album accounts for nearly nothing in the tracklistings.

I’ve listened to this album before, and I just don’t get Bob Marley.

Just ain’t a reggae person, even though I can appreciate it for what it is.

No doubt Bob had a great voice, and the songs are well performed but I feel very underwhelmed.

Quite pleasant to listen to. Nothing really jumped out and grabbed me, but I was never mad that it was on. If there was a half star I'd probably go for 2.5 stars, but I'm stuck choosing between the two options. And this is what I picked, which feels a bit too severe, but them's the breaks.

#3. I don't really understand reggae as a whole. At best I find it tedious, and at worst I find it annoying. While there may be an reggae album out there to change my mind, this one wasn't the one. At least twice while listening to this album I found myself zoning out and then thinking "damn, this isn't over yet?" when I realized it. There isn't really a single song on this album that caught my interest. 2/5: meh

Not actually as good as I remembered

Reggae isn't really my go to Genre to listen to on a rainy day, so that slightly influenced the listening experience. Leaving that aside, it's a good album bringing some great vibes. It has inspired me to give a few more listens to the album I don't really have a song that stood out for me, thus so far in the first listen I don't have a favourite yet.

Twee keer Bob achter elkaar. Leuk om te vergelijken. Bob is Bob natuurlijk. Maar waar Natty Dread een interessante en afwisselende muziekbasis biedt, hebben de nummers op Catch a Fire nog vooral een repeterend en weinig ingekleurd raggae-ritme als basis. Een bizar sterke ontwikkeling in slechts één jaar tijd. Daar hebben ze flink voor kunnen oefenen. Want er is tussen deze twee albums zelfs nog een ander album uitgebracht. Het album zelf staakt bij de twee sterren. Het is mij nog wat te suffig. Maar ik weet inmiddels, dat wordt later opgelost.

2 Yeah, I’ve established that I’m not much of a Bob Marley fan, and once again this didn’t do much to change my mind. I appreciated that these songs at least seemed to have a bit more political messaging to them, but then again, with lyrics like “Their mind is confused with confusion”, I feel like I can only commend the songwriting so much. Why is this guy considered an all-time great lyricist? I was hoping my guy Peter Tosh would hit me with something decent on his penned songs here, but I really couldn’t tell you any aspect of 400 Years or Stop That Train that makes them stand apart. Hell, I couldn’t even tell you what the biggest hit here, Stir It Up, has that the other songs don’t. I thought maybe it had a profound message I was missing, but no, it’s just about sex. Maybe people are just horny - see my earlier note about sex noises in music. On a positive note, this has one of the coolest physical album concepts I’ve ever seen - and no, not the version featuring Marley smoking a spliff - but the OG release was in the shape of a Zippo lighter and opened up like one to reveal the record. That’s cool as hell - I’ll give Marley credit for that one.

First, I’ll credit the album cover (which is very different to the one this website displays). That said, while I'm appreciative of Marley's brand of reggae music, I found the album repetitive and rather boring.

Like it is fine for what it is. I know it was the basis of a lot of music I like. I would not mind it if it was on in a public location and would probably vibe to it. But I’m not going to sit down and listen to this again.

I don't think this is on par with his better material, eg Exodus. The writing and especially the lyrics are not very inspired and they do get very repetitive. The big "hit" on this album is Stir it up but I think this it is mediocre compared to his other more successful singles. So overall this did not excite.

day 15. listened to the original ones first, then went back and listened to High Tide or Low Tide which sounded way better to me - and would have been a favorite - now I wish I listened to all the Jamaican/re-released versions first. anyways. this album was just okay to me … I do have the impression that most reggae sounds the same and this didn’t really change my opinion. Stir It Up does stand out and makes sense why it was the only song I knew previously. Other faves were No More Trouble and Concrete Jungle. I just found the rest to be too similar not only in sound but often times in messaging too … meh. sorry, it’s a 2.5/5 rounded to 2 for me, I didn’t hate it but it doesn’t stand out to me.

Eh... only one standout song.

I feel bad giving this album this score, as there were plenty of parts of somgs I liked, but it always felt like it didn't go far enough into what I would enjoy, and would slip away from me being interested in the song by the end of each song, and that either happened with every song, or the song didn't catch me in the first place. I can completely see why this is something worth listening to, and I'm glad I did, but this is either not for me, or at the very least I am not in the mood at the moment, and probably won't be most moments of my life.

Concrete Jungle, Stir It Up, Kinky Reggae and Midnight Ravers. I think they just added different vocals to the same music. Besides the chorus of the songs I couldn’t tell you which song is which. 5/10

Don't understand why Bob Marley so popular

Bob Marley is the first person most people think of when you think Reggae. He does the genre well, I like the instrumentation more than the vocals in this.

Catch A Fire's songs' lyrics deal with political injustice towards blacks and poverty, as is the case in much of Bob Marley's work. Catch a Fire is about the current state of urban poverty" and "Slave Driver" connects the present to past injustices, which are still ongoing themes today for people of colour. Best: Concrete Jungle Worst: Midnight Ravers

Maybe I should just copy & paste my other reviews of Bob Marley & The Wailers albums... I just don't know how so many of these albums make it on the list. I could understand one (say Exodus), but so many?!? They all follow the same intricate formula: get some basic Reggae, add some more Reggae, stir, and spice it up with even more Reggae for good measure. (Evidence: Stir It Up on this very album). Suffice to say that this is not my idea of an enjoyable album. But to each their own. 1.5/5

Ugh, reggae. It must be one of the most creatively dead genres out there. Every song sounds exactly the same. Not sure why this needed to be a "deluxe version" with two extra songs that also sound the same. 2/5.

Stabilt Bob-album med låtar jag inte hade hört tidigare, trots att jag lyssnat mycket på Marley under uppväxten. Stir it up klart bäst, men det är nog mycket nostalgi som talar där. Svårt att betygsätta Reggae, det är ju trots allt vad det är och det mesta blir ju ganska lika samma.

Relentless reggae just isn't my thing, I like the odd one but an entire album, even BM is just a bit much. Also a bit traumatised from travelling in SE Asia and hearing BM greatest hits on repeat in every god damn bar

After 1 track I was thinking this could be a 5 star album, by track 4 I was 2 stars. This is my problem with reggae. It gets tiring fast after the initial rush. How does anyone love this genre I’ll never know

Очень тяжело подходить к музыке, которую ты изначально терпеть не можешь всей душой, и пытаться как-то объективно её осмыслить. Я попытался, но наверное слабо получилось, ибо вызвало всё точно такое же отвращение, как обычно. Эта вот вся хиппарьская срань, бесконечный чилл, однообразный и беспощадный. Один и тот же гитарный аккорд раз в такт, какое-то наркоманское блеянье, а главное — отсутствие нерва, хоть каких-то эмоций, просто музыка бесконечного расслабона. а самое обидное, что куча годных и не очень музыкантов в своё время обильно вздрочнули на всю эту мариванную эстетику, благодаря чему мы имеем миллион вариаций хуёвого белого регги, которое отбивает любой интерес к жанру с самого рождения. короче не хочу я, хуета хует, в жизни себя переслушать не заставлю. Регги можно вынести в количестве 1-2 песен, но целый альбом — это пыталово не хуже дженерик рокабили. Единственное теперь знаю, что песню Rudie can't Fail Клэш спиздили с Baby We've got a Date Марли. Not a bad sound, just a boring repetitive one.

A good album talking about the instrumentals, this album gives me the tropical vibes I hear now in the bachata genre, it is an iconic album in history, in my opinion this turns boring by the half of the album but gets better with the last three songs. Never heard a full reggae album, this was a good one to start with.

It wasn't terrible, but I didn't enjoy it that much. Most of the songs sound the same. That said, the sound isn't bad, it just gets redundant and a bit boring when you listen to all of them one after the other. Favorite track: 400 Years

La mezcla se escucha muy bien y me gusta que es un disco variado en sonidos de acompañamiento, en los arreglos, pero no lo suficiente para que haga que me guste el reggae. Parece que la guitarra toca lo mismo en todas las canciones en todo momento. El bajo de No More Trouble sobresale del resto del disco. 2.5 Estrellas que se quedan en 2 porque no creo volver a poner este disco. Quizá si hubiera una versión instrumental podría pensarlo. i do not get reggae at all. every track of this sound indiscernibly identical to me. the raggae beat, played straight or shuffled, is maddening. every track is an obnoxious slow beat with a bit of strumming here and there. the album is not catchy or interesting; it's just endless repetition. "concrete jungle" is the closest i got to liking a song, and that was just the opener! points for being politically radical i guess, but this was miserable and headache inducing.

Ooof, I really hate Bob Marley and reggae in general. It's like disco for stoners, it's just too repetetive and boring for my taste. I guess that's not true, I do like Marley's ska stuff but the reggae stuff is just unbearable for me. Well, I listened to is anyway and that is 44 minutes I will never get back. No shade to people who love this music but reggae hurt me in ways I will never recover. 0 out of 10 stars.

Hey, Bob Marley. That's another name I've heard before. Through having listened to Maverick a Strike five albums ago, I possess the required knowledge to correctly predict that this fellow is a reggae artist. That's kind of a shock, really. I always thought this guy was a singer/songwriter. It's also crazy to know that there was once a time where reggae had some degree of mainstream appeal. Yup, reggae. I'm always down to diversify the ol' musical palette every once in a while. That being said, this is boring as shit. Not a reggae guy, what can I say? I've said the same about half of the genres in the book at this point. Is something wrong with me. Anyways, the backing vocals are decent and Marley is a competent vocalist for this style of music, though the musical sensibilities of reggae are just so goldarn restrictive. Even for a 35-minute album, I felt that this was too long-winded. "Slave Driver" is a good tune. Very reggae, and by extension very relaxing. Vocals are good, too. I had a good ol' snooze for the rest of the album, however. I won't lie. Book time. Pioneering album in reggae. First to achieve success within the rock market. Yeah, sure. We can have reggae on the list, even if it is a genre that kind of exists on its own island and is incredibly unremarkable. I cosign this inclusion. ================== Happy album number 365. A whole year on this fuuuuucking site. It's been much longer than that in reality, but I've been going strong with the weekend albums for about half a year now.
