Legend did a lot of whitewashing of Bob Marley's best stuff. To boil this album down to Stir It Up is an embarrassment really, when the rest of it is better, but also rooted in colonial injustice - it's kind of annoying to think most people think Marley is the happy Summer reggae guy who liked a spliff. This album is great, so much more spark and energy than Natty Dread, and it fairly zipp(o)ed along.

Considering this is my first Bob Marley album I've ever heard, this is a pretty good introduction. I'd say "Midnight Ravers" and "Concrete Jungle" were some of my fave tracks from this.

I have only heard Bob Marleys hits and I hadn’t heard a full album until this one. The entire album is filled with great lyrics about love and racism (especially the track “Slave Driver”) I overall really enjoyed this record with my favorite tracks being “Slave Driver, Concrete Jungle, and Stop that Train”

It's not painful to listen to but I don't get reggae. A lot of it is pretty samey to me. I don't understand what makes this album worthwhile, I really don't. Bob is an okay singer but nothing special. For a guy with such a cult following I'm just perplexed as to why. Not exactly horrible, but I just don't know why I'm supposed to give a damn.

I liked this more than the first Bob Marley album I had (Exodus), but it's still reggae.. and I'm not the biggest fan of reggae. That being said, it was pretty chill background noise and it helped me focus in a particularly stressful situation.

i read that this is supposed to be one of the best reggae albums ever. It isn't. i also read that they couldn't afford to get back to Jamaica from the UK so were given an advance to record an album and this was the result. which makes a lot of sense as to me its got the vibe of lets just get this album out so we can pay off that advance.

Reggae is always pretty listenable, but it never really grabs me

What a great album. Marley has an uncanny ability to write scathing social commentary and put it to music that just feels good. There's anger and frustration here but it's mixed with enough joy to stay sweet. The result is so balanced that I find myself digesting the message without any of the jaded defensiveness that "message" albums often provoke. It's great. Marley and his Wailers were brilliant.

Solid chill album.

When I rotated through this before, I gave it a 4 but had nothing to say. Dunno where that came from! There's a lot to love here, and a lot of variety. Tracks 5-6-7-8 are a tour de force.

I didn’t really listen to this song super in depth since I was in the process of beating elden ring while I had it on in the background but it was definitely bobs most political album and it’s was pretty good

As good a reggae record as I've ever heard. The Tosh songs are faves among almost uniformly excellent tracks. Nothing not to like here.

Maybe I should just copy & paste my other reviews of Bob Marley & The Wailers albums... I just don't know how so many of these albums make it on the list. I could understand one (say Exodus), but so many?!? They all follow the same intricate formula: get some basic Reggae, add some more Reggae, stir, and spice it up with even more Reggae for good measure. (Evidence: Stir It Up on this very album). Suffice to say that this is not my idea of an enjoyable album. But to each their own. 1.5/5

this album is too good to rate Bob Marley has gotta be on of my favorite musicians and listening to the deluxe version of this amazing album should make him one of your favorites too I actually enjoyed the jamaican versions more than the originals with my favorite probably being No More Trouble (Jamaican Version) like they really just made a song (an album, really) that slaps as hard as modern hip-hop way back in the early 70’s

I like his other albums more, but I mean, come on, basically everything he recorded is legendary.

Though my favorite Wailers album is probably "African Herbsman," this and "Burnin'" are really well recorded and have such a rich and spacious sound. An incredibly talented group. I only wish they could've lasted longer together. The Beatles of Reggae.

All around great album. Can't give it any less than a 4 because Stir It Up is still a BOP.

This is music, so I have to allot one star for that but ... really, "I hate reggae music, I hate it..."

Bob Marley and The Wailers’ “Catch a Fire” might be shorter on the hits, but it is perhaps a more solid and even reggae record than “Exodus.” “Stir It Up” is the most successful of these songs, but it was “Concrete Jungle” that stood out the most.

The offbeat rhythm section makes reggae instantly recognizable. However, it is also somewhat of a crutch in that it leaves me tired of hearing it after a whole album. I want more variety. That’s the sticking point for me. There are reggae albums I like. This one is perfectly fine, but there aren’t a whole lot of standout songs nor moments. I enjoy Survival better from Marley and The Wailers as an album. High Tide or Low Tide is a welcome departure from the well known reggae sound. I don’t find the song particularly great on its own. But coming off 9 previous typical reggae-beat songs, it’s a highlight on this album. Something I often overlook is that Bob Marley’s voice is quite good. Remarkable in light of all the ganga he smoked (see album cover).

Ugh, reggae. It must be one of the most creatively dead genres out there. Every song sounds exactly the same. Not sure why this needed to be a "deluxe version" with two extra songs that also sound the same. 2/5.

Bob Marley is a true lyricist. One must wonder how much he could have affected world change if he had been a politician instead of a musician... But I'm questioning how many reggae albums I must listen to before I die?

Enjoyable and cool. I was pretty into nearly every track, though maybe i'm missing the message on Kinky Reggae. Stir it up is stellar and the rest hold together well. Good lyrics and vibe.

Got lost in my work while listening, apparently I cannot multi-task. But smooth and breezy and great for seat jamming.

One of my favourite Bob Marley and the Wailers albums (that being said though, he has a lot of really good, very similar albums). This is reggae! (Although a lot of reggae sound very similar as it is quite well defined that you need the ska guitar for instance). Favourite track is Concrete Jungle followed by Slavedriver. Another thing that makes reggae interesting is the heavy themes of exodus to a promised land, fitting the oppressive government, and racism.

Very chilled vibe Catch A Fire brings to the table. I think everyone has heard of Bob Marley and apart from Stir It Up, doesn't have any hits or songs on the Legend album. Its a nice change from his later hits. Not a favourite of mine (Exodus would be) or is it perfect (some songs were filler), but a nice album to put on when in need of relaxation and joy.

How do these crazy talent-vortices spontaneously form? A bunch of kids get together and shortly are defining some swath of a major genre. And then again tragedy is so often looming over it, and is that some dark part of it. It’s a bad old world.

Listened to the deluxe version on Spotify which includes both the standard reggae versions + original album tracks. Refreshing to hear Marley rephrase his Jamaican reggae stylings into more modern arrangements of the time - it's a testament to his musicianship and passion that both versions both share a common thread but manage to have their own distinct sonic personality. While I'm still not the biggest fan of reggae for its inherent repetition and downtempo nature, the tracks here did grow on me as the LP progressed.

Some big hits but some songs new to me, very chilled and enjoyable.

This album shows as evolving genre about to reach its international peak of success. Bob Marley and Peter Tosh are great composers and this is a reggae standard by all means. Althoug "Stir It Up" is the most famous track, "Concrete Jungle" is a more interesting song, with a nod to R&B and other reggae's influences.

Not as great as Exodus lacking the hits and full of a bit too much filler for my taste.

How am I just learning that there is so much more Bob Marley material than I previously knew? I just assumed there were only two or three albums before he died and most of those songs are on the "best of" and other compilation albums. But on this album there is only one song (Stir It Up) that I remember hearing before. It was really good. 4 stars.

It's 11º outside as I listen to this. This Marley album takes me to the beach for a warm respite from reality. The only song from BMs Greatest Hits whose picture hung on every college student's wall - Stir it Up is one of Bob's better known songs and pairs well with the rest of the album. It's nice to hear some Bob Marley I'm unfamiliar with. 4/5

What a great debut! Really cool sound on this album that's different compared to what you usually hear in the big hits. More of an edge to some of them, more raw. Quite the start to a legendary career.

The perfect antidote to this morning's dark freezing January temperatures. I wish I was lounging on a beach in the sun. Concrete Jungle, Baby We've Got A Date, and of course, Stir it Up are the top tracks for me.

Reggae!

When it comes to reggae, you can't be Bob Marley. Right from the first notes to the end of the album this record rocks. The bass lines and rhythms are infectious and the guitar solos have real feeling, as does the singing. This album also has Peter Tosh, another great talent who died too young.

Very fun to listen to this while getting ready for a New Year's Celebration. It's somehow both upbeat and relaxing. Stir It Up will always be one of my favorite songs of all time.

This is our Hogmanay listening! I really enjoyed this and have added it to my playlist. I can’t believe I’ve never listened to it before.

This is the first original album by Bob Marley and the Wailers I've heard (aside from "Legend".) While the band don't stray from their formula musically, there's some really strong material here with a broad range of emotion behind it. "Concrete Jungle" shuffles forward, with the clavichord effectively adding to a sleazy atmosphere and searing lead guitar rounding off the mix. Alluding to the slave trade and racism, the lyrical material is much more politically charged than the side of Marley's work I'd heard before. But throughout, the Wailers prioritise a laid back, mellow feel, with Marley's vocal never rising into a rasp, howl or bellow. They allow the strong social conscience of each song to play itself out, coming to the fore with lyrics like "No chains around my feet but I'm not free" and "today they say that we are free; only to be chained in poverty." It's powerful content and sadly hasn't aged a day. In contrast, the middle of the album shows the band at their most romantic: while "Baby We've Got A Date" presents the carefree joy of being in love, "Stir It Up" is the real classic. One of the band's best known songs, it is sublime: a slow burning, slow dancing beauty. Following "Stir It Up", none of the songs really lived up to those in the first half of the album, though I'm prepared to give them more time. It's an enjoyable album, particularly for a certain mood, and has made me keen to explore more of the Wailers' work.

"Catch a Fire", which actually means burn in hell. in terms of sound, it's pretty solid. Chill and slick despite the political themes of most songs. I think, however, that the sound is better and more sincere when the theme is simply about love. Reggae. Is this just creating tunes over that signature beat? I don't know. But I didn't liked it overall. Too repetitive or same-y. If this is considered as the best reggae album of all time, then I'm pretty sure this genre isn't for me.

Classic really. Seriously groovy baselines from “Family Man” and, even though there’s only so much you can do with reggae, the songwriting and production on this album keeps everything fresh - there are 3 or 4 proper ear worms on this album.

I feel bad for this one, I think it just came up at a time where this wasn't what I was looking for. Typically I'm all in for some Bob Marley but it fell a bit flat for me.

Bob Marley is one of those artists that I could listen to endlessly, no matter the mood or scenario. Not sure this is the best album by Bob Marley & The Wailers, but also, there wasn't any tracks I didn't enjoy. Giving it a solid 4/5.

I'm a big Bob Marley fan but this album didn't really do it for me - stir it up was a highlight but there wasn't anything else to elevate it. Pleasant enough to sit through, not pleasant enough to make my top rankings.

Can't go wrong with Bob Marley. Reggae wears on me though and I can't listen to it all day, every day. Starts to sound the same too i.e., All Day All Night sounds like the same mix as Kinky Reggae (just one more beat of percussions at the end).

Ok Bob Marley. As I am a New Zealander, the entire oeuvre of the Wailers are practically the national anthem of this fair country. Yet despite that, the only song I knew prior was "Stir It Up", a conception song. The album was a lot more varied and interesting then I was expecting. The side A songs that delve into slave history were particularly powerful. But there is also the side B reminder that Bob Marley was quite the rooter. I get why this album is on the list. It feels like a record that is both influential but holds up as an artwork, and also enjoyable.

Most of what I have listened to from Bob Marley has come from compilation / best of albums. This was a new album for me, with only a couple of songs that were familiar ("Stir It Up" <-- a classic, "Kinky Reggae"). I like Bob Marley. I liked the album. I might listen to this album again sometime.

Stabilt Bob-album med låtar jag inte hade hört tidigare, trots att jag lyssnat mycket på Marley under uppväxten. Stir it up klart bäst, men det är nog mycket nostalgi som talar där. Svårt att betygsätta Reggae, det är ju trots allt vad det är och det mesta blir ju ganska lika samma.

Reggae's kinda growing on me

Feel a little strange rating this album so low.

I don't like reggae as a rule. Partially because I attach it to some potheads I knew as a kid that I never really understood. And also because I didn't have a terribly struggle-filled upbringing, so I was attracted to darker stuff - or at least stuff that wore its darkness on its sleeve. But also because reggae tends to sound very samesy to me, probably the way hip hop sounds very samesy to someone who doesn't listen to it much. That being said, this album got to me. Stir It Up is a great song.

Gotta say, I think I’m more likely to listen to the Sinatra record again than this Bob Marley one. There’s nothing wrong with it and I recognize that it’s good, but it still just feels like the background music that inevitably made it’s way into the air whenever I sat out on the hill by the elephants at NCSA on a sunny Saturday. Anyway, do you think Old Blue Eyes ever called his butthole Ole Brown Eye?

Worth it for Stir it Up alone.

A classic album...but not my favourite. Concrete Jungle and Stir it Up are stone cold classics and the other songs are not far behind. You can't go wrong rolling up a fat one and putting this great album on the turntable. 4.5 stars

Relentless reggae just isn't my thing, I like the odd one but an entire album, even BM is just a bit much. Also a bit traumatised from travelling in SE Asia and hearing BM greatest hits on repeat in every god damn bar

After 1 track I was thinking this could be a 5 star album, by track 4 I was 2 stars. This is my problem with reggae. It gets tiring fast after the initial rush. How does anyone love this genre I’ll never know

Concrete Jungle and Stop That Train are solid Bob hits, even if they arent the cultural juggernaut that some of his other songs are. Stir It Up is in that pantheon of greatest grooves ever conceived. Midnight Ravers kicks ass.

While this isn't necessarily my favorite genre, which this is like a precursor to Raggae. (I think) it's not something I'd normally listen to in the background. It's definitely a feeling, and has so much life in it. Maybe if I rolled a joint the size of a hogs leg and had a couch to melt into, I'd probably enjoy it more. But eitherway, blitzed out of my mind or not. It's a solid piece of art work.

Очень тяжело подходить к музыке, которую ты изначально терпеть не можешь всей душой, и пытаться как-то объективно её осмыслить. Я попытался, но наверное слабо получилось, ибо вызвало всё точно такое же отвращение, как обычно. Эта вот вся хиппарьская срань, бесконечный чилл, однообразный и беспощадный. Один и тот же гитарный аккорд раз в такт, какое-то наркоманское блеянье, а главное — отсутствие нерва, хоть каких-то эмоций, просто музыка бесконечного расслабона. а самое обидное, что куча годных и не очень музыкантов в своё время обильно вздрочнули на всю эту мариванную эстетику, благодаря чему мы имеем миллион вариаций хуёвого белого регги, которое отбивает любой интерес к жанру с самого рождения. короче не хочу я, хуета хует, в жизни себя переслушать не заставлю. Регги можно вынести в количестве 1-2 песен, но целый альбом — это пыталово не хуже дженерик рокабили. Единственное теперь знаю, что песню Rudie can't Fail Клэш спиздили с Baby We've got a Date Марли. Ну а кто бы сомневался, собственно

Не помню, пытался ли ранее ознакомиться с творчеством Боба Марли, но представлял нечто иное: минималистичные гаражные инструментальные аранжировки на фоне и речитативы фронтмена впереди. На деле же альбом весьма радует своим звуком, инструментал приятный и весьма разнообразный, записано качественно. И сами композиции весьма неплохие, есть структура и внятные мотивы. Другое дело, что альбом просто в критически быстрые сроки надоедает. Какие-то альбомы мог сутками гонять, и не испытывать негатива - тут же за денёк так приелось, что хотелось выключить. Что могу выделить? Concrete Jungle звучит как хит, приятная комплексная композиция. В 400 Years по душе пришлись нотки психоделического рока. No More Trouble звучит примерно так, как я ожидал от Боба Марли, располагающе. В целом и альбом звучит располагающе. Только вот располагает на немного, потом начинает душить. И, что важно, не мотивирует продолжить знакомство с дискографией. Да, возможно там остросоциальная лирика, критика капитализма. Это похвально. Но я в первую очередь вижу, что альбом называется "прикури", а конверт пластинок первого тиража был исполнен в форме зажигалки. А такое не одобряем.

A good album talking about the instrumentals, this album gives me the tropical vibes I hear now in the bachata genre, it is an iconic album in history, in my opinion this turns boring by the half of the album but gets better with the last three songs. Never heard a full reggae album, this was a good one to start with.

It wasn't terrible, but I didn't enjoy it that much. Most of the songs sound the same. That said, the sound isn't bad, it just gets redundant and a bit boring when you listen to all of them one after the other. Favorite track: 400 Years

Review of the Original Album Version: I could go either way. There wasn't a whole lot that excited me about this album. I enjoy all of the parts of the album, but I doubt I will keep coming back to this album. Highlights: 1, 4, 6, and 9.

Cool and relaxing, but not likely to be in my heavy rotation. Something a bit different when the mood takes me.

As ever, an enjoyable experience. Was thinking it was fairly average, then stir it up came on and made me very happy!

“Quench me when I’m thirsty” De todos los géneros de música que hay, el reggae es el que menos escuchado debo tener. El tema es, que Catch a Fire es un disco que todos debemos haber escuchado en algún momento y de alguna manera nos olvidamos. No a propósito, no porque nos lo mostraron… ASI de popular es. Discutiblemente, hizo por el género, lo que los Beatles hicieron por el Rock and Pop con su primer disco. No vas a encontrar los temas que suenan en la tele ni van a ser los primeros temas que se te vengan a la cabeza cuando te pregunten por Bob Marley, pero su contribución a la “globalización” del género no tiene comparación. Como disco a mi personalmente no me gusta. O no me gusta más. Cómo muchos de mi rango etario deben haber hecho, quemé (jeje) todo el reggae en mi adolescencia y procedí a no volver a escucharlo. Algo en nosotros se quiebra con el paso del tiempo y nos vamos dando cuenta que la vida está bastante lejos de la alegría y facilidad que nos transmiten los discos de Bob Marley. No, every Little thing isn’t gonna be alright. Poquitas notas adicionales: - El aspecto técnico del disco es espectacular. LO GRABARON EN KINGSTON JAMAICA, DEBEN HABER USADO UNA RADIO TONOMAC Y UN MICROFONO DE ALGUN MEGAFONO. - El remaster tiene unos problemas de distorsión que sufrí en 3 auriculares distintos. Quizás es Apple Music pero me molestaban muchísimo cuando venia el bajo de golpe y se escuchaba un poco roto al principio - Las letras son todas super simples, quizás es eso lo que nos aleja del genero cuando empezamos a buscar mas profundidad o a querer identificarnos con lo que escuchamos. - Kinky Reggae y Stop that train me parecen temas bastante infravalorados. - Me gusta que aun siendo reggae tenga un poco de poesía/protesta en 400 years y en Slave Driver.

I love a lot of Bob Marley and The Wailer's music. Their music is what introduced me to reggae and was music I grew up with. Overall, it was a pretty solid album My favourite songs from this album are Slave Driver, Stir It Up and Kinky Reggae. 4/5 stars just bc some of the songs were not that great in my opinion

Good. Has some great versions of his classics and some deeper cuts, I do love his grittier more raw stuff. If I was going to pick up a Marley album this one would probably be the one I would aim for.

Good reggae with soul/R&B vibes. Tackles similar political issues, but not seemingly as poignantly (albeit earlier) compared to the preceding listing of Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey.

Not even close to my fave BMATW album but still worthy of full marks. So much political struggle coursing through this album, broken up by amazing love songs like ‘Baby we’ve got a date’ and ‘Stir It Up’. Love that Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths are on the backing vocals of Stir it Up. Peter Tosh also deserves a notable mention. ‘Stop that Train’ is a tune. BMATW were by no means a one man band as many believe

Chilled - not as good as later songs I’ve heard

A typical collection of Bob Marley songs: romantic, political, party oriented. The production on some of these is a little low-key - the songs are strong but the production sparkle isn't always on par with Legend.

Some recognisable songs, and those are the good ones. The rest are okay, but a couple dirge!

Fantastically classic. Bob and Pete have incredible songwriting synergy. Very great.

Always love me some reggae! Bob Marley is the king of cool, the sultan of swag, the regent of relaxation. Him and his wailers are perfect for any outdoor setting or even indoor if your main objective is to relax and feel like you are close to an ocean or beach or beer.

Never heard this album. Only really heard the greatest hits. the guitar is great in this! Loving Concrete Jungle. love the harmonies. Not a huge reggae fan, but this has great instrumentations and harmonies.
