Reviews (page 11 of 13)
It’s OK, but not really something that I’d listen to again. Fairly predictable really, and I don’t tend to love this sort of reggae
I love reggae and I love Bob Marley but this album was just a little bit on the 'meh' side - I did enjoy it but nothing much stood out to me. Will definitely revisit it though
Some enjoyable rhythms, nice to listen to while working.
Sounds like every other Bob Marley thing. If it's your thing, it's your thing. It ain't my thing. But it plonks along OK.
3.5/5 nice chill vibes. Enjoyed this one
Bob is always a chill time, good listen. Is this his best? No. But am I mad about that? No, absolutely not. Can find contentment here very easily.
Very chill instrumentation. Not the kind of music I’d listen to normally but I definitely liked it. Favourite song No More Trouble.
Stir it up a classic, the sound still as fresh and as fun as the first time I heard the Wailers. Not a consistently great album but a good listen nonetheless.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: it was great, so soothing but so full of life Favourite song: Track 4 - Stop That Train
Leuke melodie en goed gezongen. Heeft heerlijk relaxte uitstraling. Top-album, maar geen kippenvel momenten. ***
Good and groovy, just not Marley's best work.
all of the songs are incredibly samey and the songs themselves sound incredibly same throughout the few minutes they last at least concrete jungle had a little guitar riff to break up the monotony
Musically reggae is a bit too samey to me taste, but this album was a pleasant and enjoyable listen nevertheless.
Pure easy going reggae. Fave track: Stir It Up
It was alright.
As I was listening to this I realized that I've ignored Reggae as a genre, which is a shame because I like a lot of what I've heard. This album was nicely varied, which is always a concern going into any album. I like the messages a lot of this album is has to say. I'm looking forward to seeing some of these songs pop up in my playlists. I don't think I'd buy this one on vinyl. 3
Alright I guess, nothing really stood out to me
Je suis un honnête homme
Exactly what I expected from him. There weren’t any “surprises”, when I think of Bob Marley I think of this vibe exactly. That isn’t bad because of course he’s influential and talented and significant however notbing NEW. I did enjoy it though, it’s just never been my type of music.
I'll say that the first cut "Concrete Jungle" is so good - wailing (pun) guitar and minor key...this is reggae I can sink into. Doesn't suffer from much repetition and a ton of emotion and excellent playing from the band. The album is good overall - I like the variety of vocals - but the last 4 or 5 cuts after "Stir It Up" kinda blended which I think keeps this from jumping up to a 4 for me. Would never kick it off the turntable if someone spun it tho... 7/10 3 stars
boy howdy i do not get this one. to be clear, i think the album is fine. even well made. i think the appeal of reggae is one i can appreciate as an outsider but it has never really been my thing, and perhaps unfairly, is something i just associate with that one guy in your college dorm who's got a hackeysack collection. i think this one is just too laid back for me. but i will still keep an open mind and hope that something in the genre clicks for me! favorite song(s): stir it up
Good stuff from Bob and the Wailers. Reggae, calypso and the feel of sunshine
Solid
It's a nice easy listen this album. I was expecting it to drag on, but I had a pleasant time with it. A lot of reggae is so formulaic and samey, but I don't want to dismiss this on those grounds because it's pretty solid throughout.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed the opener, something about the way it started sounded like a major deviation from the reggae formula and I was intrigued. By the time we got to "Baby We've Got A Date," I was less smitten, though "Stir It Up" is a standout — I really enjoyed the sounds on the articulation of the main riff... I dunno, sounded different on this listen. By "Kinky Reggae" I had heard enough. I find myself a little more open to reggae since this project started, I can tune into elements of the music and I hear the craft involved, but this sits at a 3 for me nonetheless, as I don't see myself reaching for it and playing it for pleasure. The last Bob Marley review (which was a while ago) got a 4 if I recall correctly, and I enjoyed that more.
Cue my normal rant about how the earlier versions of these songs were better. The performances on Peter Tosh's two songs are especially leaden compared to the earlier recordings—so much so that I can't understand what they were thinking. But overall, this is enjoyable stuff.
I really had a good listen to this one even though it’s so familiar and like muscle memory. While I’ll always have mad respect for Bob Marley & The Wailers, this listen I heard basic everything—basic lyrics (though Stir it Up I still find to be sexy sweet) and basic grooves.
was aight
It’s not bad it just reminds me of the type of music my uncle puts on when he’s making food. So all in all very nostalgic
First time hearing a Bob Marley album start to finish. It's good, easy to listen to, sounds exactly like what I would think a reggae album would be. Chill if i was in the mood
I really looked forward to hearing this. I have to say I was a little bit disappointed. I had pretty high expectations though, and this is definitely not Bob Marley's best album. Regardless, I really like reggae in and Bob Marley general, and even though I was a bit disappointed it was still not that bad. Good thing is that the really awesome albums will probably come later!
I don't really have much to say. It's a nice chill listen when you feel like some reggae. 400 years was my favourite of the album.
A pretty good Album overall. It's quality remains quite consistent and the songs never dip into bad or even boring territory but I can't think of any of the Songs in this Album as out right great either. None of Bob Marley's best are in here, and while it's nice listening to them and they have some pretty great instrumentation, it just doesn't quite hit compared to his Album Exodus which still probably remains his best work. Still give it listen if you're a fan of either the artist or Reggae in general.
Exactly what I would expect from reggae/ Bob Marley
Pretty cool.
It’s Bob. He’s jammin’. It’s good easy listenin. Keep on jammin’!
leuk voor achtergrond wel
It’s perfectly fine reggae but I don’t know that I’ll ever listen to it again
Nice listen
bobby’s got that reggae in him
Decent.
I'm not a reggae fan, but it was nice experience! I like this album, not so mainstream
Some good moments but overall not really my thing
3,5
Album 1 - 6/6/2023 I've never given reggae a chance before. Sure, I know many of the hits that people in the states tend to be familiar with, but I've never delved into an album. It's a shame I didn't study up before stopping in Jamaica during my honeymoon cruise! I can't say I was very surprised by the contents of this one, though "Concrete Jungle" kicked things off with a few more fiery guitar licks than I was used to in reggae. For the most part though, it's that standard instrumental palette of the genre, performances are scarecely thrilling, but always solid. You can tell a difference in the full-band feel of this vs a Marley solo outing. The group vocals are quite nice. First-impression highlights were Concrete Jungle, Stir It Up, and High Tide Or Low Tide (which I think is actually a bonus track) Enjoyed this one, but don't know how often I would return to it. Maybe next time I need to come back with a joint in hand.
Can't go wrong with Bob Marley.
I said on my earlier review for Peter Tosh that reggae is my absolute least favorite genre, but I'd be remiss if I didn't note that The Wailers were first rate musicians a composers. Bob is truly an icon and wrote some beautiful songs that I would probably be playing all the time if I was introduced to them in a different genre. That said, everything the Wailers bring to the table makes this album all the more exciting and enjoyable for me, though not more so enough for me to give it more than a 3
Aaaaaaand here is the reason why reggae just doesn’t do it for me! I just don’t get it (having said that Exodus is awesome) and struggle to invest in it to a point that I care enough.
again, i get why this album is on this list it's good, i'm just unlikely to ever listen to it again
Oh man, how lovely, perhaps the ultimate soundtrack to a sunny afternoon. It’s interesting to see the beginnings of an artist that would go on to become such an enormous cultural figure. Marleys writing and performances are charming, but I don’t think I’ve ever stopped to consider the work of the Whalers as a collective. The choir work and vocal harmonies really defined this for me, so infectious. No matter how much I can appreciate elements of this album however I don’t think it’ll ever progress to more than a “throw it on in the background” status for me, an enjoyable but casual listen for me. 3.5 stars Fav track: high tide or low tide
Super pleasant listening experience, soulful for the most part. Songs get very samey for me, but that could be my lack of familiarity of the nuances of the genre. Walking home freezing my tits off in Hobart is probably not the setting Marely and co had in mind for the listening experience, would certainly go down better with a beer on some tropical island. 3.5 Fav track: concrete jungle
Enjoyed this listen - there’s clear talent and chemistry between group members, and a true connection between themselves and the music. Whether reggae is something I’m realistically putting on more than every now and then is another thing. Some bass lines (namely High Tide or Low Tide) do seem so effortlessly genius, and Marley’s voice can linger with you. No major qualms other than it being a style I don’t really have that heaps of a connection to. Three and a half. Fave was High Tide and Low Tide
Ne ho ascoltati loro di migliori
I get thats its rege but the repetitiveness looses me. Most of the songs dont have any meamorability for me and If I didnt know the title I wouldn't know how describe a singular song on this album besides "its rege" which is super vague. Songs aren't very unique from each other That being said these three song No more trouble High tide night All day all night Brought this album from a two star to a three star for me. They were catchy, I found myself singing along and they would get my attention if I heard them out in public
I definitely enjoyed listening to this, but will always feel I have an enjoyment / appreciation cap for reggae. Love the vibes though. 3.5/5
Great reggae album, great to kick back and do sweet fuck all.
I don’t have much to say about reggae music and therefore this album but I like it. I don’t differentiate the songs very well but I find the rhythm consistently enjoyable to listen to regardless of what else is going on. It is like a chill 40 minute jam.
3.75
It is Reggae music. It was pretty good. I wasn't particularly familiar with any of the songs. I wasn't moved by any of the songs and I don't have a desire to listen to the album again but it wasn't bad by any means.
This isn’t a genre of music I like listening to in more than small doses. As such I am a bit skeptical going in. Concrete Jungle was a really nice surprise! Musically, it has that unmistakeable reggae beat but there is a lot more layered on that. The tedium I often experience with reggae tracks was nowhere to be found. It was a very interesting track. As the album went on I didn’t find any other songs that appealed to me as much as the first. I was a little disappointed that more of this didn’t stand out like the opening track, but it was a fine listen.
I should go back and copy paste my review from past Bob Marley reviews. If you like reggee, there is nothing better than this. But I can't stand reggee. Sure THIS reggee has a history of positive social messaging. But I just can't stand the sound. I extend this dislike to ska as well.
.
Reggae just isn't for me. I loved Bob Marley when I was 18, but now the songs all just sound the same to me. I acknowledge it's well made at least.
I haven’t really got much to say about this album, overall it was nice, had some cool instrumental choices and Marley’s vocal delivery’s are passionate and cool throughout. Despite this I found this album to just be more of a chill relaxed album and not really pushing any sort of musical extremes, in no way is this a bad album though, I did enjoy it but I felt this was more of an album that needed a time and place that suited it, I wouldn’t casually listen to this on a day to day basis. I can totally see why people would really enjoy this though but for me it doesn’t hit all the right spots.
Not a biggest fan of reggae, but this one has some nice tracks
I enjoyed, good music for cleaning the kitchen
A bit one dimensional but a soothing listen with great groove. Nothing I'd specifically seek out again but definitely a standard for reggae music
A high 3.
Enjoyable album, very slow and groovy. I wanted a little more kick to it. However, I will need to listen to the original released version and go over that as a packaged unit, instead of my accident listen to the deluxe edition first (huge pet peeve ugh…) A good album regardless, I’ll see if I can find the fire in it that I think is needed for me to have strong feelings about the record. No More Trouble, Concrete Jungle, Stop That Train
i can appreciate the style!!!
I'm not high enough for this
Listened to thr first half, enjoyed the music and deserves another listen, but wasn't feeling it this day. Probably better listened to in the summer blasting from your car or in the garden
Bob Marley has always been about as neutral in my music likes as anything. With the exception of listening for this project, I don't think I've ever chosen to listen to Bob Marley, but any time someone else plays it or I hear it happenstance I've enjoyed it. It was fun listening to the Jamaican versions versus the US releases back to back. It's pretty clear that the US releases were made to sound closer to the contemporary rock music of the time.
Liked this more than I thought I would, but still, reggae isn't my thing. 3/5
I would probably give most reggae albums a 2 star nowadays, but this was more enjoyable than a lot of reggae I hear. There's something more musically interesting happening in a lot of these songs that makes it a more engaging listen. Didn't like it quite enough for a 4, but it was still good. My favourite song was High Tide or Low Tide.
The album has plenty of smooth, irie melodies Bob Marley and The Wailers are known for. On the other hand, this album has songs about more serious topics than I knew the band wrote about. I definitely cannot say anything bad about it, it was an enjoyable experience hearing the album from start to finish with a good mix of more serious songs with ones that are more light and loose. Overall, though, there was just not anything I would choose to listen to regularly, but a few songs that I would definitely return to later on when in the mood.
Bounces along pleasantly enough.
Good catchy reggae
It's a bob Marley album, nice enough in the background on the right occasion but struggle to form a strong opinion.
Not a big reggae fan but found this to be a nice mellow album. Some of the songs seem to blend together because they sound so similar. I probably wouldn't listen to this album again. Highlights were "Concrete Jungle" and "High Tide or Low Tide".
It’s bob Marley
Mellow and pleasant.
Not really my genre of music but it was enjoyable still.
You know, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this at all. I don’t care for reggae but I found this accessible and palatable.
najbolja pisma-Concrete jungle Mellow zvuk klasican Marley al nije me zadivia, vise za individualno slusanje pisama po meni sve u svemu okej
Klassismille myönteisenä henkilönä arvostan Marleyn biisinkirjoitusta, vaikka tarkastelenkin hänen estetiikkaansa myönteisen mutta pohjimmiltaan ymmärtämättömän etäisyyden takaa. Merkittävän osan ajasta myös nautin Marleyn musiikista.
Its fine. Workmanlike. Reggae, even the best, washes over me, much like country and western. Its pleasant but leaves me feeling a bit empty. A down the middle 3.
Yassss
my favorite bob marley i've heard but i still don't connect with it
thats bob alright
surprisingly mid only song I knew before was stir it up 3.5
Meh
Classic Marley
It’s a bop.
stir it up (que xorprexa) i stop that train
Stir it up nunca fue de mis favoritas, hasta ahora.
listened to again kinda ho-hum
Its a fine and peaceful album. Would potentially listen to it again, but no songs really stood out
Favourites songs: 400 years Stop that train No more trouble
Yet another one where it was fun to hear tracks I don't know from someone I've heard over and over. This was good -- CC may have sort of ruined me for reggae but enjoyed it. No More Trouble was favorite, I think
Great post-ska reggae songs. I would give this 3.5 stars. Not groundbreaking but a good listen, especially if you are on the beach with a mango juice.
Helt ok.
did not dislike as much as i thought that i would
There is a reason Bob Marley is a reggae king. Like it or not its chilled out Caribbean jams where the bass bounce, the guitar picks it up, the vocals are smoove. I know youve seen his posters on freshman dorm walls. I know you cheeses out there smoking weed to this shit. Its music for cruising. Its fun. Its slow. It make sense being on this list. Bob Marley is rad. Fuck off. Go get lost listening to this stone ass sober or high as a kite. Dont matter, dont matter at all. 3.5
It's a album of Bob Marley without any hit of him but it's good.
Fun grooves, but all the songs sounds pretty much the same
The mainstay listen of drunk white people in Hawaiian shirts staying at Caribbean all inclusive resorts
Super laid back but still not a reggae fan
Decent, but also seems like inoffensive reggae for white folks.
Some groovy tunes but they all start to feel the same. Concrete Jungle and Stir It Up are both absolute classics.
Helt okej.
Some entertaining reggae. A bit lukewarm on it
Pretty good intro to reggae
You really hear the power of Bob Marley, makes you want to hear more songs from him...
Pleasant listen, but wouldn't find myself reaching to put the record on over others. 3.5/5
Its okay
Not my taste, nothing unexpected from what I knew. Generally mellow
Unmistakably reggae, "Catch A Fire" has the sound of Bob Marley's earlier sound before "Exodus" but we can hear his messaging start to change. Most noticeably on the song "No More Trouble". This album is very much reggae, and it is very good reggae, the kind that Marley can produce. What it does not have though, is the cultural impact of the man behind it, at least not yet.
I feel about this album the way that I feel about essentially every Bob Marley album except Natty Dread (which is far and away my favorite). It's good but not ultimately that interesting. I think that this album is better than most, but it still feels like background music a lot of the time 3/5
4? This is just 11 of the same song, but I like that song. 3
Has some recognizable tunes. Overall music is of high quality and contains cultural significance.
so slow.
7/10 Best song - Stir it up
good musicianship and I like the political messages. I feel like I need to be stoned to get the most out of reggae tho lol
Laid-back jams.
3.5/5 First time hearing the album. Very good, as usual from Bob Marley. Standouts: Stir it Up, High Tide or Low Tide (Bonus Track).
I liked this more than the first Bob Marley album I had (Exodus), but it's still reggae.. and I'm not the biggest fan of reggae. That being said, it was pretty chill background noise and it helped me focus in a particularly stressful situation.
Iron. Like Lion.
i read that this is supposed to be one of the best reggae albums ever. It isn't. i also read that they couldn't afford to get back to Jamaica from the UK so were given an advance to record an album and this was the result. which makes a lot of sense as to me its got the vibe of lets just get this album out so we can pay off that advance.
3/5 niceish but not enough
Enjoyed it! Lot of tracks I hadn’t heard before. Good background listening album,
Pretty chill album. I would listen to it to be calm.
Reggae is always pretty listenable, but it never really grabs me
Not his best
Nice album to work to. High Tide or Low Tide a stand-out surprise!
Solid chill album.
not my favorite but still jammin
Reggae isn't really my thing but this is definitely some of the best out there
Pretty magic. I'm not a reggae fan and I probably won't put this on again on my own accord, but I very much enjoyed the ride
The offbeat rhythm section makes reggae instantly recognizable. However, it is also somewhat of a crutch in that it leaves me tired of hearing it after a whole album. I want more variety. That’s the sticking point for me. There are reggae albums I like. This one is perfectly fine, but there aren’t a whole lot of standout songs nor moments. I enjoy Survival better from Marley and The Wailers as an album. High Tide or Low Tide is a welcome departure from the well known reggae sound. I don’t find the song particularly great on its own. But coming off 9 previous typical reggae-beat songs, it’s a highlight on this album. Something I often overlook is that Bob Marley’s voice is quite good. Remarkable in light of all the ganga he smoked (see album cover).
Bob Marley is a true lyricist. One must wonder how much he could have affected world change if he had been a politician instead of a musician... But I'm questioning how many reggae albums I must listen to before I die?
Got lost in my work while listening, apparently I cannot multi-task. But smooth and breezy and great for seat jamming.
Rólegheitareggí, mæli með!
I and I enjoyed this one.
Fav songs: - Concrete Jungle
3, I like reggae now
Was quite funky, I should come back to it 6/10
Solid, classic Reggae! Not something I would listen to on a regular basis, but I still appreciate it and would not mind listening to it if you were to put it on
Quite good. I enjoyed the positivity of many of the songs. 6/10
Enjoyable, good vibes
Solid
Listened to the deluxe version on Spotify which includes both the standard reggae versions + original album tracks. Refreshing to hear Marley rephrase his Jamaican reggae stylings into more modern arrangements of the time - it's a testament to his musicianship and passion that both versions both share a common thread but manage to have their own distinct sonic personality. While I'm still not the biggest fan of reggae for its inherent repetition and downtempo nature, the tracks here did grow on me as the LP progressed.
Listened to on 2/9/22 3.5/5 Favorite Songs: High Tide or Low Tide, Concrete Jungle I wish I was sitting on an island drinking instead of sitting at my desk working when listening to this album. It was all in all really good and very chill background music
This album shows as evolving genre about to reach its international peak of success. Bob Marley and Peter Tosh are great composers and this is a reggae standard by all means. Althoug "Stir It Up" is the most famous track, "Concrete Jungle" is a more interesting song, with a nod to R&B and other reggae's influences.
Not a genre I would usually listen to but actually it wasn’t too bad. 3*
Not the best reggae album we've had.
some very nice songs, great vibe and melodies, classic for sure
likes it but wouldn’t listen again
It’s alright. Reggae innit.
Was looking forward to Bob Marley but I was expecting an album with more of his hits. On repeated listens it has kept growing on me. Good reggae vibe. Cover art 3.2/5
another classic
Reggaeeees, rastafari, groovy, svingende, afslappende
They didn’t lie, they caught a fire…. Album
Tranquilo de escuchar. Voz inconfundible. Reggae en estilo puro
"Catch a Fire", which actually means burn in hell. in terms of sound, it's pretty solid. Chill and slick despite the political themes of most songs. I think, however, that the sound is better and more sincere when the theme is simply about love. Reggae. Is this just creating tunes over that signature beat? I don't know. But I didn't liked it overall. Too repetitive or same-y. If this is considered as the best reggae album of all time, then I'm pretty sure this genre isn't for me.
it's ok, 3.5/5.
Positive vibes here. Top tracks: Concrete Jungle
Not a bad album, don’t usually like reggae.
I feel bad for this one, I think it just came up at a time where this wasn't what I was looking for. Typically I'm all in for some Bob Marley but it fell a bit flat for me.
I'm a big Bob Marley fan but this album didn't really do it for me - stir it up was a highlight but there wasn't anything else to elevate it. Pleasant enough to sit through, not pleasant enough to make my top rankings.
Can't go wrong with Bob Marley. Reggae wears on me though and I can't listen to it all day, every day. Starts to sound the same too i.e., All Day All Night sounds like the same mix as Kinky Reggae (just one more beat of percussions at the end).
Ya mon!
An easy listen. Not sure if it will go into heavy rotation.
good reggea album but i think most good reggea just sounds the same
Chilled
I understand the cultural importance, but don't care enough for the music itself.
Solid reggae album with a few great hits. Nothing quite like exodus but not bad either. Could listen to it every now and then. 6.6/10
Reggae isn't really my genre of choice but I enjoyed Concrete Jungle and No More Trouble and Stir It Up was a chill jam.
A bon entendeur
Feel a little strange rating this album so low.
Gotta say, I think I’m more likely to listen to the Sinatra record again than this Bob Marley one. There’s nothing wrong with it and I recognize that it’s good, but it still just feels like the background music that inevitably made it’s way into the air whenever I sat out on the hill by the elephants at NCSA on a sunny Saturday. Anyway, do you think Old Blue Eyes ever called his butthole Ole Brown Eye?
Decent, just not as good as Exodus. I was surprised I only knew 1 song
Pretty mellow reggae
First Listen. Bob Marley is always good. 3/5
Very chill. Not my usual go-to for listening though
"Catch a fire, so you can get burn, now (catch a fire)" (Slave driver) "Mind is confused with confusion" (Midnight ravers) No vais a conseguir que me interese el reggae, pero buen intento.
This was alright, kind of didn't notice it was playing till it had finished. Chill and inoffensive background music.
baseline reggae
It was nice to listen to some Marley outside of the typical "Greatest Hits"
I'm not very fan of reggae, but it's ok. Sometimes repetitive.
Ya ya
Review of the Original Album Version: I could go either way. There wasn't a whole lot that excited me about this album. I enjoy all of the parts of the album, but I doubt I will keep coming back to this album. Highlights: 1, 4, 6, and 9.
Stir it up is one of those songs that get better with each listen. This is a great album
No, every Little thing isn’t gonna be alright. - Kinky Reggae y Stop that train me parecen temas bastante infravalorados.
Very chill, good for days you'd like to relax and listen to music.
Ganz chillig
🌿🌱🌝
It's fine. Nothing I really want to listen to a whole hour of but it's good at least.
einige Klassiker dabei.
Latter quarter of the album had the best songs, most accessible ones at least
Jolly and politically right on at the same time
Good reggae with soul/R&B vibes. Tackles similar political issues, but not seemingly as poignantly (albeit earlier) compared to the preceding listing of Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey.
It was fun to hear a different version of Stir It Up. Otherwise unremarkable
Nice chill vibes from the reggae icon
Great album… easy listening
Not his best stuff but easy enough listening. Better to come.
Felt very mellow, but since I'm not that familiar with the genre the songs started to all sound similar.
02/12 - On Friday I worked on development of the site plan and working with Scott Meyer for location of wall protection in processing rooms. I was not able to give this album much attention but the few songs I did hear I really enjoyed. Definitely one to come back to.
It's a decent album, couple of bangers and plenty of generic reggae
Chilled - not as good as later songs I’ve heard
A typical collection of Bob Marley songs: romantic, political, party oriented. The production on some of these is a little low-key - the songs are strong but the production sparkle isn't always on par with Legend.
Some recognisable songs, and those are the good ones. The rest are okay, but a couple dirge!
Primera presa de contacte amb aquest disc. Reggae amable i tranquil, de fons funciona força bé, i té alguns temes coneguts que pugen una mica el llistó. No està malament.
Solid. Uncomplicated. Enjoyable. Personifies the reggae genre for me.
Nice. Raggae isn't my favorite, but this was good.
not my thing
Never heard this album. Only really heard the greatest hits. the guitar is great in this! Loving Concrete Jungle. love the harmonies. Not a huge reggae fan, but this has great instrumentations and harmonies.
Didn't expect to get two reggae albums before getting even one Beatles album. We love Bob Marley and his wailers, don't we folks? I'm no reggae expert but to me there's nothing special here, and that's okay. Just good vibes baby, island vibes. I do know the song "Stir It Up" because it was frequently the soundtrack to me and Hayden smoking kelp -- no that's not a euphemism, it's a Minecraft pastime. Favorite tracks: Stir It Up, High Tide or Low Tide, Slave Driver. Album art: What are we looking at here? A stretched image of a zippo lighter? The cover on Apple Music is a picture of Bob Marley facing the fattest joint I've ever seen. Either way, no confusion as to what's going on here. 3.5/5
Naja marley halt
decent, little slow and boring
Nice and relaxing. Good music to have in the background.
Good.
Music to help the blood pressure...
It's 13 degrees. Reggae should make me feel better - I may not be in the right headspace for this album. I haven't heard a lot of these songs and pretty sure I've never listened to this album before, but I typically do like ol' Bob. Not bad.
This was a nice diversion. Not as easy to listen to as “Legend” but that’s a compilation so that’s not a fair comparison.
It's all right reggae
It started out fine, but I definitely got bored less than halfway through the album.
Feels very islander chill. Interesting, and full sounding, but very relaxed styling
Oh this is going to be good! Wasn’t as good as I thought. I don’t think I’m that much into reggae
Was fine
nice regge
Meh
Decent but it's not a genre that I would ever actively listen to
Too mind-numbingly samey sounding for me unfortunately outside of Concrete Jungle and Stir it Up. Bob Marley is talented but he is not for me at all.
Chill reggae/jazz composition, not really my type
This was fine, but largely forgettable.
i don't really like Reggae
I get it but I don’t really get it
Not for me. I feel like I need to be on an island with a band in the background playing this to vibe with it.
Most of the songs sounded the same.
It's just ok. It's not as groundbreaking or discernable as some of his other albums. Most of the songs sound about the exact same. I will certainly choose other of his albums long before this one.
I like it too, this 6-1 to 6-3 stretch was all good
I feel bad for giving this such a low score cause I know that Bob Marley is iconic, but I have never liked Reggae as a genre and this didn't convince me otherwise either. 2/5
Not a reggae fan. I did like No More Trouble though
05/28 Was okay. All his albums pretty much sound the same
"Catch a Fire" is widely considered to be the Big Bang of modern reggae. Although reggae music existed before this album, sonically it was much closer to ska than this 'modern' interpretation, for which Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and the Wailers are considered pioneers. The influence of the British record label Island Records should also not be underestimated. It ensured that the music was recorded and produced more professionally, and made more recognisable and danceable for a white audience. Marley, Tosh and the Wailers popularised themes such as racism, poverty and oppression, which are as promiment as love songs and the (glorified) use of marijuana. Listening to this debut album, it’s striking just how low-budget the production was. This is even more apparent when you listen to the album’s ‘Original Jamaican’ recordings in the Deluxe version, which you can then compare with the overdubbed Island recordings. I’m not a reggae fan, and I don't think I ever will be. However, I have always found Bob Marley to be the most interesting of all reggae musicians, especially given that the band and their sound were so iconic that they are still being copied to this day. You can hear the band's raw and somewhat rough-around-the-edges beginnings here. At the time, it was certainly a sensation: politically charged music from the Third World which, in retrospect, is more historically significant than musically compelling. Marley & Co. achieved this better and with greater confidence on their subsequent albums.
I really wanted this time to confound my preconceptions, but alas: I’ve left this still feeling that Marley has been mythologised beyond all rational engagement. Simple instrumentation, simple lyrics, minimal variety, wrapped in an undoubtedly compelling narrative. Fine, I guess, and still open to being confounded by the other Marley albums on here, but for now it’s a two.
Everything was so similar...
ok até, mas meh, 2.67
Congratulations. I listened to Bob Marley before I die. Do i get a prize or something?
i didn’t enjoy this as much as the other bob marley album i had but i still thought it was smooth
Not a reggae fan
I think Bob Marley got a little shafted for me. Back in college in the late '90s, the best of Bob Marley was the album pretty much everyone had. That was tremendously overplayed to the point where I was kinda pushed away from reggae as a whole. I've come back to it and enjoy some of it, but I've still just never gotten into Bob Marley. Musically just mid.
Small doses. I can take Regaee in small doses. Not an album. Not even one at 40 minutes. Not my jam. Maybe because I never was one to get stoned? I just feel like once you've had 2-3 minutes of Regaee and you think kind of a cool beat, you've heard all it has to offer. Sorry Bob, and to all those that love this, I can only muster a 2.
Reggae is an anomaly to me. While I enjoy it and can really jam to many of the songs, an entire album or concert is too much for me. If I’m in the mood and I take the time to listen to the lyrics, I do really enjoy it more. But, honestly, I do not take the time to do that either any music too often. I miss the days of bringing home an album or cassette with the lyrics and liner notes. I learned so much about the album and artist. That all being said, I enjoyed the album but reggae songs are typically songs I have in a mix with other genres.
5/10
Not a fan of reggae so therefore low rating, but it’s not bad or anything just not my cup of tea.
Concrete Jungle was decent and funky. Everything else was a boring and I did not enjoy at all. The more I listen to Bob Marley, I more a hate his music
Yet another Bob Marley album. And again it's alright, albeit a bit cheesy, but I already knew that going in. This one is especially light on hit songs, though. More of a unified thing, probably. Key tracks: Stir It Up
TBH not that excited for another Bob Marley album. But, maybe I'll love it! I think my overall issue with Reggae is the insidiously happy beat. It starts to grate on me over time. But this, so far, is good in an unflashy way. But yeah, I'm half way through and getting very fatigued by the relentlessness of the beat.
5/10 Not bad, but it's way too repetitive. Same beat throughout the whole album. There's nothing really impacting me or getting to me. Not a difference between every song
I've never been the biggest fan of Reggae, the music and the trustifarians who love it tend to put me off. This hasn't really changed my mind that much. It's bland and inoffensive but the fact that the rythym is the same throughout gets a bit much. It's fine. If this is some of the best that the genre has to offer then I won't break my back trying to find more. Best Tracks: Concrete Jungle; Stop That Train; Stir It Up
scream very 'Bob Marley' vibe!
Meh.
Maybe this is considered a great reggae album but I don't know the genre much and from what I have heard in my life there's never been a point when I've felt a desire to explore it further. Every song sounds identical to my ear and although not unpleasant, this album doesn't change anything for me.
Oh, more Bob Marley. Yaaay. File this under the Velvet Underground section of influential artists I never want to actually listen to. One record will do, I get it! Especially reggae, which just drones on and on. Look, whatever. Not for me, DNF since I know it's not for me.
I don't really like Bob/most reggae. This was fine.
What a stupid tra la la music!
not a fan of reggae but it is not a bad album.
too droning to be anything more than (good) background music for me
me pegou de mau humor, achei chato p caralho
Not quite my cup of tea, mostly indifferent. 5/10
i no likey
Not for me but I can see why some other people would like it
I liked the first song, much to my own surprise, but I find roots music unbearable.
Stir It Up isn’t enough of a Redemption Song to get me to enjoy Reggae for more than 6 minutes at a time.
Nice and pleasing. Great Background Music. It's not blowing my mind though. Experiencing a bit of listening fatigue near the end. Became a little repetitive.
While I understand the importance of reggae and Bob Marley as cultural touchstones, the music itself has always been a mystery to me. I think the translation from the soul of one who grew up bathed in the bright blue waters of the Caribbean to one who grew up in the cornfields of Indiana was lost somewhere in between. Although Bob Marley’s music and message don’t impact me in a substantial way, I appreciate that he has made an impact on so many, despite his limited time on this planet.
Did not grab me as much as some of the other albums. Also. 3 Bob Marley albums in my first two weeks of this challenge.
I've never been a fan of Marley, or most reggae in general really. It being played to death by everyone throughout my teens probably went some way to sour me on it. This album is reggae, it does exactly what a reggae album should. Nothing really stands out for me.
meh
Nice, calm music, regge i think, laying in a hammoc vibe, but every song feels the same, i don't hear any difference between songs
Ok, but not good
Okay if I'm in the mood for reggae, which I rarely am.
