Messy and memorable. 4/5

Starts out as a 4. Remains there. Like it. I would buy this as a cassette tape.

really like this album, had no idea this was the same pixies that did where is my mind?!?! tame, monkey goes to heaven, la la love you, hey, and gouge away were my top 5 off this album but shoutout to debaser

Good listen. Pretty grungey start. For me here comes your man is a favourite.

Great album where every song was at least good, great vocals and nice variety of sounds. Highlights for me were I Bleed, Monkey Gone to Heaven and Mr. Grieves.

This album is a lot of fun. Lots of short, poppy songs. The good thing is that even if a song is annoying (Monkey Gone To Heaven, Silver, Crackity Jones), they are only a few minutes long!

Before today, only heard Hey and Here Comes Your Man. Money Gone to Heaven was good. Flow between songs was nice.

Pixies. One of those bands I've known about for decades and one that I've half-tried to get into, partly because of their significance and partly because I love many of the bands they obviously inspired. And of course because I've enjoyed a few of their songs. I've heard this album plenty of times, and some of their others, but try as I might, I just can't get into them like I want to. It's the repetitive bass led style, the repetitive rhythms, and the irritating vocals. They're one of those bands that would be so easy to lampoon. You know those YouTube musicians who are like 'What If I Played Beyonce In The Style Of Metallica'? Pixies are one of the prime groups of 'play X in the style of'. And it would be so easy to do so. Anyway, with all that out of the way, this album has all the bits. You can see how Nirvana and others were influenced. I'm torn between a 3 and a 4. I'm feeling generous today and I generally like this as a whole, and a few of the songs, more than most of the 3 star reviews I've given here. So a four it is.

Others might argue that this isn't their strongest album, but it's certainly the one I align with most.

Good nostalgic album.

I see why they're popular but it's not my jam

WANNA GROW UP TO BE A DEBASER

Nice and luminous music. An undeniable band that offered new air to music.

I didn’t happen on Pixies until _Trompe Le Monde_ and perhaps controversially, it’s my fave album of theirs. A band I very much like but fall short of loving and one I tend to listen to playlists of rather than albums A lot of their best songs are on here though and its quiet/loud influence on 90s alt rock and therefore inclusion on this list are not in doubt.

track 1, then 3-10 pretty damn good. There Goes My Gun and Hey are also pretty good. Really chaotic at the beginning, but eventually comes together to a more pop and indie sound. First listen was pretty rough, but I had enough time for a second one. Just wow, it really shined. Really cool album with really good highs and not too many lows. Will be revisiting for sure.

Good noise!

епте а неплохо

It is a fun and great album to listen to. Not much to add 4/5

Only a couple letting it down.

Nice album. Debaser is perfect.

Кращий у них, топовий звук, бас яскравий по всьому альбому, цікавий сонграйтінг. Чомусь по справжньому не вдалось його полюбити

Цей альбом я поважаю.

Pixies at their best.

This one was pretty big for me when I was first getting into indie music, but as of late it doesn't really hold up in the second half, honestly. That being said, it's the only Pixies album I ever feel any sort of urge to listen to these days, and you really can't argue with that first half anyway.

Love this album. Has its quirks, and therefore is a mood-based listen. Love it tho!! 4/5🎉

The originals ♥️

I liked it. I'm not very familiar with this band, the only song I definitely knew by them before listening is "where is my mind." I had heard "here comes your man", before, but I never would have guessed it was this band. I actually don't like that song very much compared to other songs like "hey" or "monkey gone to heaven". I think there are other songs that will grow on me with more listens, this is one I want to listen to more in the future.

Love the vibes. Monkey Gone to Heaven I seem to know really well from somewhere, and can't figure out where. The album probably isn't quite memorable enough for 5.

Good album, fun guitar riffs and second vocal lines. Monkey gone to heaven top choice.

Had this one before I joined the group and gave it a 3, but think I am actually more of a fan listening on this occasion.

Overall a great album - every song brings something unique, contributing to the collective vibe of the album. The sound and style feels very familiar, seeing as it played a big role in later music, it's clear there are some echoes of Nirvana and Radiohead. To me it's like a more upbeat version of car seat headrest - both spiraling and melancholic

Probably the most complete Pixies album. Having said that, I'm not convinced that there should be more than 1 Pixies album on this list. Favorites: "Debaser", "Wave of Mutilation" (prefer the U.K. mix on the Pump Up the Volume film soundtrack to the this, the original), and "Here Comes Your Man"

Second album in a row I've already listened to, good though!

From what I heard, a great record. Some of the tracks sounded a lot of pre-Grunge with Black Francis’s screams and loudness.

Gouge away, debaser, here comes your man. All fantastic songs. A great album. This monkey’s gone to heaven. One of my favourites

This was a really good album, I was familiar with the hits but never took the time to listen to it fully, vocals are really captivating and musically really interesting, I did find the second half of the album was a bit of a challenge to go through, but that could just be me. No qualms of anyone giving this a 5 but for me listening to it it’s a very high 4

great cooking rock music 4/5

Good stuff

Alt rock at its finest. I cannot stress how influential this band has been on my own music. Love it.

A classic. Always a good listen

Fuckin'-aye! Mr. Francis and Ms. Deal shine brightly, as does the rest of the musicianship here. At once weird and familiar, forward and regular, calming and disturbing. It is only a second to get this in 1989 to grunge barrel-rolling the '90s. Listen carefully: every song here grabs, shakes, won't let go.

So I was directed to not the original album but the 29-track reissue and I loved every minute. It didn’t lose me once. I definitely owned Surfer Rosa at one point but this has some classic tracks. I’m not sure how soon I’d listen to them again but it was a blast while I did.

My first ever listen to the full Pixies experience, though I knew a handful of songs. This is so good, verging on great. Gouge Away, Debaser, Here Comes Your Man. Obvious highlights. It's going into high rotation and on another day this would be a five star.

i actually really liked this and didn’t think i would at all so yay!

- Nooit geweten dat het "Monkey Gone to Heaven" was ipv man. Verklaart de aap. - 2 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM - 1 nummer al toegevoegd aan MMMM

There's no denying Franklin's incredible voice and musical stylings that are still being copied and iterated on fifty years after this album debuted. Still, I personally admire Aretha Franklin a lot more than I want to sit down and listen to Aretha Franklin

Good album! I had never heard it before but recognized some songs

I know this is a lot of people's favorite Pixies album. But it has always been hard for me to get into. It's good, and maybe if it came to me at a different time of life it would be a 5/5.

Great classic Northwest grunge. I’m glad for the reminder to visit this one!

It’s been about 750 albums since I reviewed Surfer Rosa, the only Pixies album I’ve reviewed so far (4 stars, although the review I wrote was short, and didn’t make much sense). I know a couple of songs off of Doolittle, and I’m curious to hear what the whole album is like, especially since it’s the follow up to the aforementioned Surfer Rosa. Doolittle was a bit shy of five stars for me, but I thought it was a really good album. The guitar playing was fresh and exciting on each track, the drumming was sharp, and there was a good mixture of accessible pop-oriented songs, along with some stuff that was a bit more out there. I tended to enjoy the more accessible songs on this album, but the more traditional alternative rock songs were good too. A few notes on some individual songs: “Debaser” grabbed my attention right away. I loved the guitar playing, the lead vocals were excellent, and Kim Deal’s backing vocals at the end were awesome. What an excellent song, and a superb lead-off track. “Wave of Mutilation” kicked ass too. I loved that drumming so much, and I enjoyed hearing Frank Black shift into softer vocals. Another really solid song. “I Bleed” was probably my favorite of the more chaotic songs on Doolittle. The backing vocals were excellent, and added a ton of depth to the sound. The guitars were excellent once again. I loved the surf rock tone of “Here Comes Your Man.” The tone of the guitar was fantastic, and the drumming was great too. There’s such a shift between the chorus and the verse, but it works so well. The guitars on “Monkey Gone to Heaven” were really great, and the strings made the sound even better. This was easily one of the best songs on the album. Kim Deal’s backing vocals really punch up every song she sings on. “Mr. Grieves” was great too. I loved the shift in sound after the introduction and opening verse. The guitars and vocals were outstanding. What a fun rockabilly sound. “La La Love You” had some really unique guitar playing, and I enjoyed David Lovering’s baritone voice. The crooning style of this song was great. Doolittle is a really solid alternative rock album, and it’s easy to hear why it’s held in such high regard by other alternative bands from the nineties.

Always get suggested Pixies, like the stuff I've heard before. The album hasn't let me down, really enjoyed it.

A band I have heard of but not heard much of. A few songs I didn't really like but a lot I did. Where is where is my mind??

Took me a while to get into this album, but after a few listens it started to click. I’m not a huge Pixies fan, but this is THE album that I have grown to really like by them. Definitely an original and very influential album.

Very good. Alt rock/punk

Really, really, really good alternative rock album. The bassist Kim Deal's work is groovy and appropriately bouncy throughout without being overpowering. Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and Hey are all classics that can make the cut on almost any rock playlist and not seem out of place. Reading around the album, noticing the description of "a loud/quiet sound," despite being a bit hamfisted, is perfectly apt. Obvious how the Pixies were and inspiration for many alt rock and grunge outfits in the 90s. Not a perfect album by any stretch but a really strong 4/5 for me.

When I first moved out with friends this was what was playing on repeat.

Gritty, familiar, timeless

What a damn fine Breeders record, haha, just kidding. To be honest I got into the Breeders long before I acknowledged the Pixies, though 4AD already tattooed on my heart. Anyway, the greatest compliment to this record is that it doesn't sound like anything else, apart from said Breeders. The studio engineering is fidelious and presentatious, with microphones in the most aloof locations in the room. Kim, proceed to Deal, and Frank, Black as you will.

Fantastic album

I should have listened to this years ago, I think I would've liked this a lot when I was in uni. The noisy guitars with catchy, poppy hooks is a cool combination. They do the loud-quiet-loud dynamic really well, and contrasts like the almost screeching vocals on parts of Hey that contrast with the jangly indie guitars are nice It's pretty clear the influence this had on many bands, but particularly on Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. I'll probably come back to this, really enjoyed it Highlights: Monkey Gone to Heaven, Hey, No 13 Baby

Sempre m'ha agradat aquest àlbum. Bon ritme, temes que animen i que porten bons records. Aquest mereix estar entre els 100 més escoltats.

It may be blasphemy in Pixies circles, but I like this one more than Surfer Rosa. It has more high points for me, anyway. But regardless I still like the Breeders more.

ja mini liebe pixies – das verhebt! «Here Comes Your Man» & «Hey» sind aber doch immer no mini standouts & de rescht chund nöd ganz ah die 2 bangers ane gid 3.5 pixel – muess morn morge entscheide öbi 3 oder 4 drus mache update: ha d'klausle vergässe…es album wo «Hey» druf hed bechund anschienend automtisch es 4i

Allora ammetto la mia ignoranza non lo conoscevo però mi é veramente piaciuto e penso lo riascolterò tutto. I temi trattati nelle canzoni mi attirano

This is the best Pixies album. I love the bass playing, and every song is very catchy even the "lesser" album tracks.

Not bad, Radiohead was worse)

Bandaza que para mí está infravalorada no se porque me da esa sensación, pagaría para verlos (dentro de los parámetros razonables de costo de entrada, me escuchaste DF entertainment la puta que te parió te odio)

Interesting more classical alt rock. Some good songs, all a bit strange though. Interesting lyrics if I remember correctly.

So good. Not their rawest and bestest.

I liked it

Slightly ruined this album by listening to some of the best songs individually. Listened to a few times in the past but on relisten its 4 stars. Has some songs which are not really all that great which takes the momentum away.

Excellent. No filler. If I'm nit-picking, and I am nit-picking, I would say I've overplayed it. That's my fault. I also prefer Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim. It's still great, and Gouge Away rules.

p626. 1989. 4 stars. Innovative garage/grunge, with decent tunes. On the replay list.

sounds good, have to listen again as it was in a background while working

I've always been really into Frank Black's solo work. I personally think that it stands up more than Pixies (controversial!). This is undoubtably solid though, and sounds so modern for 1989 (except for the gated snare, perhaps). Favourite tracks: Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr. Grieves, Silver.

Half the songs make me mad, but half the songs are some of the best of all time. Elevating out of the endless morass of 3s feels right.

Wow that was an incredible album ! Great hits and ballads. Lyrically it's good stuff. I didn't like the Frank Black solo album we listened to a while ago, but here he clearly shines. 9/10 Fav songs : Monkey Gone to Heaven & Silver

Tiring in large doses, refreshing in medium doses.

Solid rock album.

Early teens Robbie ate this UP and quite frankly I still do!

The hits kept coming on this one. I can't explain it, but the Pixies occupy a nostalgic place in my brain that is also occupied by the hit Nickelodeon show "Pete & Pete".

It's probably their best album. I'm still not a complete fan of the lead singer, but some of the songs are just plain catchy.

Thought I would like this and it didn’t disappoint. I always think of the pixies with a different sound to this album. Quite mixed up

I didn't realize i knew as many of these songs as I did. Not only that, but I hear their influence on Franz Ferdinand, Jack White, The Cure and The Cranberries to name just a few.

Pretty punky. Never listened to the Pixies before and I'm glad I got the chance too

I've heard this a bunch of times, and while I've never been able to get fully into the Pixies I do love a bunch of songs on this bad boy. Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, La La Love You, No. 13 Baby, Hey There are some screamy punk songs but they always have that surf vibe to it. Honestly liking this a lot more than I remember liking it listening to it earlier in my life. Very solid and easily my favorite Pixies album.

All their hits, I'm guessing this was their most successful album. Either way, I dig it.

Quite A Banger

Solo conocía una canción de este grupo y ha sido una grata sorpresa. Un disco con aristas, canciones que me han gustado mucho y otras que han pasado más inadvertidas, pero me deja buen sabor de boca.

3.5 étoiles

I love the Breeders so I've been intending to listen to this album for a long time. In fact, I've started it a few times and been distracted so many of these songs are familiar. I like it a lot, and in some ways more than the Breeders. I have very specific attachments to the Breeders so I wouldn't say this could usurp them in my personal rankings but I will keep this album in my rotation!

This is a fantastic album. It absolutely rocks. I have listened to this a lot, and will come back to it. 8/10

compelling

One of the biggest improvements between albums for any band on this list. The first album was sloppy and terrible, but this is clean, sleek, and catchy, with a good variety of sounds and songs that are all the perfect length.

Classic album, I love it! When they were tasked with making this record, they didn’t do little… they did a lot!!

I do really enjoy the three pixies albums but they never totally connected for me and lets just say i am really scared of all the post kim deal music... anyhow its great!

Great but some repetiveness

I never want to listen to Tame again - made me feel stressed out listening to the breathing. Really enjoyed the rest of it, though - some of my favorite songs.

I found Doolittle to have lots of noise, hardly exemplary vocals, and cryptic lyrics saying everything and nothing in songs that sometimes end before they begin. And yet, it has its charm. By the middle, the Pixies had won me over with their energy—not unlike Nirvana in my school years, but minus Cobain’s voice and plus better music. It must be a rare album where I’d prefer to remove vocals on some tracks and just enjoy the wall of sound undisturbed (Dead, I’m looking at you). There’s just enough versatility here to keep things interesting, but not so much that the album starts to sound all over the place. That’s something I’ve started to appreciate more and more while going through the 1001 Albums list. Best: Monkey Gone to Heaven, Hey, Tame, Wave Of Mutilation Worst: Dead, Here Comes Your Man, Crackity Jones, La La Love You

Great pixies

really really good. 4.5!!

30+ year old album that still sounds fresh and exciting. The Pixies informed 90's alt rock and in a way ALL alt-rock with this release. Best tracks: Debaser, There Goes My Gun, Silver

Raw but dramatic, funny but dark. Listened to this when I was younger, but was really searching for 'bangers' and didn't really get it. Loved it.

I enjoyed this album. I already knew I liked the Pixies. I knew two songs (Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven). Nice short songs.

so so so close to a five to me if it didn't fall off on the back half

Paras pixies levy tähän asti kelpaa

Not my favorite by them but I’ll agree that it’s the one that has pretty much everything the Pixies has to offer. Some real classics on this one

The Pixies are truly one of a kind and this album is the perfect demonstration of their talent. They have mastered chaos and noise within well crafted songwriting.

Quintessentially 90s, even though it dropped in 1989! One of a handful of albums from the late 88/89 that would pave the way for the early 90s alternative scene. The way the album blends quiet-loud dynamics, surreal lyrics, and abrasive guitar work set a template that would influence so much of what would come to dominate the early 90s. In a way, Doolittle was like the bridge between the late 80s and the explosion of alternative rock in the 90s. It’s fair to say that alongside **Jane’s Addiction’s** *Nothing’s Shocking*, **Faith No More’s** *The Real Thing*, **Nine Inch Nails'** *Pretty Hate Machine**, and the **Soundgarden's** *Louder Than Love* you have five albums that pretty much reframed music for me.

Probably my favorite pixies album

Doolittle is an album with a lot of variation and ideas. Not all of them work for me personally: especially the beginning two tracks, which made me worry I wasn't going to like the record at all, but thankfully a lot of said ideas did hit for me. There's clear talent here with the infectious melodies, good pacing and clever experimentation that create something really special, and truly worth sitting through, even if some songs don't quite hit for you. Starting with Debaser, can immediately say I do not like this guy's voice here. The rest of the song is kinda nice if I block him out, but then the main singer sounding like the sort of guy you'd avoid in public, screaming from the corner of the room, is too off-putting to really enjoy the song. I expected to feel similarly about Tame, but it honestly wasn't as bad. The screaming kinda blended into the track more and kinda worked with the blaring guitars, so it didn't bother me as much, and I kinda liked it when he was more whispering, though the heavy breathing a couple thirds into the song was again off-putting. Still, not as bad for me. Wave of Mutilation was a lot more enjoyable. If it wasn't already obvious enough, I do not like it when the main vocalist is screaming lol, so this was a huge fresh air. It wasn't the most interesting song, but after the previous two I can't help but give it credit. I can't say the same for I Bleed, which is both more interesting and also doesn't have the screaming. The main vocalist's almost eccentric inflections compliment the more traditional singing behind it, all featured on a slightly eerie instrumental, creates a fascinating listen that I can vibe with. Here Comes Your Man is a break from the experimentation, and is pretty catchy. I love the choice of guitar on Dead, perfectly mirrors the visceral undertones of the track. I loved the chorus of Monkey Gone to Heaven. I'm not really a fan of the spoken-word-esque verse delivery but I really love how the rest of the song sounds so maybe it's something I can get used to. Especially appreciate the brief plucking of strings appearing intermittently throughout. The tempo changes and faster pace in Mr. Grieves was also super enjoyable. This is the point of the album where I realised how far my opinion had changed since the beginning of listening, for the better. Crackity Jones sees another fast-paced song with unhinged inflections in the chorus and I'm here for it. I can see the appeal by La La Love You, but I found it unengaging at best and whiny at worst. Almost reminds me of a budget The Smiths song lol. No 13 Baby isn't at all offensive or 'bad', but is rather uninteresting compared to the more experimental tracks, is not as appealing as some of the more catchy tracks, and falls into this weird no man's land of something I don't mind playing but probably won't revisit often, if at all. It's the longest track on the album and it unfortunately shows too, I felt it dragging on. There Goes My Gun didn't do much for me either, but the guitar riffs and the guitar solo were nice at least. Hey is a similar story to the previous track, with a nice guitar and not bad everything else, but overall feels more fleshed out, and I feel the sum is greater than its parts here. Was suddenly transported to a Gorillaz feeling world with Silver, with the slow rhythm and vocals that sound like an alternate universe 2D. Grew to really like it as it went on. Gouge Away feels like an appropriate way to close out the record. I don't really have the words to explain why. It just works. FAVOURITES - I Bleed; Monkey Gone to Heaven; Mr. Grieves; Silver LEAST FAVOURITES - Debaser; No 13 Baby

Really cool album with a great variety of interesting ideas. I enjoyed it from the get-go and continued to throughout, there were a few weaker tracks, but other than that my main issue is just trying to relate to/ understand what is being said at times. I like a lot of the lyrics but I wasn't always sure on what they were trying to get across - though I imagine this is in large part my own short coming. Debaser is a great start, I loved his singing and most of the screaming too, but this is a great example of just having no clue on what the song is about. I have briefly looked into it now and apparently it refers to movie Un Chien Andalou and the lyrics are more or less based off events in it. Tame isn't quite as strong, don't love the whispering at the start but I enjoyed most of the rest and I like the breathing that grows louder later on and kinda grows into becoming a fuller vocal. Wave Of Mutilation is pretty dark both due to the vocals at times and the lyrics - basically romanticising suicide - it sounds good giving us a break from the screaming, accompanied with a nice guitar. I Bleed is an interesting one, the overlayed vocals are kind of haunting/disconcerting at times and the instrumental adds to that general vibe. I liked the more strained vocals at the end quite a lot here. Here Comes Your Man comes in with this groovy guitar letting you know from the get go it's different. It's a good easy listen - to me it's kind of strange as it seems to lack any of the challenging elements that all previous tracks provided either through lyrics or vocally. Somewhat confusing how it fits here. Dead was quite good too (and more in line with the general themes thus far). Monkey Gone to Heaven was great, the chorus was heavenly in a way though still has this kind of eerie vibe, the guitar is great. I also enjoy the end section where he gets progressively quieter then way louder when moving to a new subject going from man to devil to God. Mr. Grieves and Crackity Jones are fun tracks, Crackity Jones has this kind of crazy energy, becoming unhinged at times, and it's so infectious. La La Love You is a huge change of pace compared to the previous, way more relaxed, the whistles are a nice touch. No 13 Baby not my favourite track in terms of subject or sound. There Goes My Gun is solid, nothing too special. Hey sounds great. When I first listened I wasn't in a great mood and this had a more sombre feel, being stuck, but coming back to it, it feels like it doesn't push for that much but allow you to ease into it if you're already primed for that emotion if that makes sense. Silver is a really interesting track, it gives this weird haunted western vibe - it sounds fine for what it's trying to be but not exactly something I'm looking to come back to. Gouge Away is a good fitting ending. Best - Debaser, Wave Of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Hey, Gouge Away Worst - Tame, No 13 Baby, There Goes My Gun

adri: 9, oscuro, estridente y experimental. Como a mi me gusta. Aaaaaaaaa. mar: 5, solo me ha gustado "hey", puedo verle el appeal pero tan pronto por la mañana se me ha hecho algo estridente

No misses yet from the Pixies, this album's just one banger after another

Debaser: one of the GOAT songs Kinda lost my focus in the second half

There's nothing quite like The Pixies and this album is pretty solid from start to finish. Quirky, cool and fun, this is an album I could see adding to my regular rotation.

Bonkers, lofi, carnage. Punk wisdom. Held together by chewing gum and angular momentum.

Solid stuff. 3.7

3.5 stars

Great album

Previously rated: Surfer Rosa (4/5) ******************* Surfer Rosa was over 500 albums ago, so I'm not sure which I liked more. This one has Wave of Mutilation and Here Comes Your Man, some good catchy numbers, but also some overly noisy stuff.

I thought I knew this album really well and it was a stone cold classic, but actually it’s not as good as I thought! There’s about six fantastic songs and a lot of alt rock filler which various from good to middling to annoying. I think I find Black Francis himself a bit like fingernails down a chalk board. But that’s part of the vibe, I guess. I prefer The Breeders! But yes this is an important and good album, overall, I guess.

Enjoyed this, you can see a clear line from this to later grunge like Smashing Pumpkins…..

I really enjoy their bass and guitar work. I'm not a fan of the shouting, but there's not a lot of it. I forgot about the whistling on La La Love You. That's funny

I love this album, many great and catchy stuff like Here Comes Yoir Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven but you also have some crazy tracks like Gouge Away

Excellent album. Standouts are “Debaser”, “Hear Comes You Man” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven”.

Iz cool. fun. i like.

Decent

I can’t believe I haven’t ever listened to this album. Amazing!!

The perfect soundtrack for cruising through the rugged landscape or the North Pennines

Dunno what the difference is between this Pixies album and the last one, but this one hit me much better.

Debaser // Here Comes Your Man // Monkey Gone to Heaven // Mr. Grieves // Hey //

16/1001. I was never a big Pixies fan, although their music and style was exactly what I listened to at a certain time, before and around grunge broke off. They were in my radar and I remember watching their live concert on Finnish TV (now that's revolutionary considering late 80's early 90s Finland and pop/rock music in national channels). After all these years listening to this reveals it has aged quite well, it is varied, interesting, full of energy and sprinkled humour. Melodic and harsh one after other, sometimes even simultaneously, quite an accomplishment. 15 songs totally felt much more than 38 minutes, perhaps a song or two made my mind wondering about, but focus was re-grabbed soon. A second or third listen will surely liven up those songs as well. If I would have to recommend someone an alt/rock album this might be it, although I am more of a sonic youth fan (perhaps that's post rock then?). 4/5, I'm stripping one star, since this really is not my type of music anymore, and replaying or digging deeper is not very likely.

нормалек.

Great album, just pushing the alt rock limits in all sorts of directions. Super bold, great instrumentally, and even though the singer has a distinctive voice it doesn't get annoying. The record just captures that 90s angst sound so well (even though it's from '89). Just the right mixture of energy and weirdness. Favourites: "Here Comes Your Man" is a great track, but my absolute favourite was "Hey". The album is packed with great songs. "Silver" was a bit underwhelming on the other hand.

It's good, but something about The Pixies has always failed to captivate my interest. I can hear the influence on later music, but I'd rather be listening to that later music, you know? I'm glad this exists, but it's not going into my library.

This is calmer and more tuneful than Surfer Rosa; it sounds like they're trying to apply their dissonant sound to standard pop-song structures, which works ok but I like them better when they just let loose.

8/15 songs knock my socks off, the rest make me smile contentedly.

Really enjoyed the variation on this album, not everything landed for me but overall I really liked it. Fav song: Here Comes Your Man - also liked Monkey Gone to Heaven and Silver Least fav: Tame

This album is one of the quirkiest mainstream albums from the start of what alternative would soon sound like. I can hear their influence on all kinds of bands nowadays. When I first heard debaser and wave of mutilation and tried to listen to this album I couldn't really get into it. I definitely found myself liking the album a lot more after revisiting it all these years later, now aware of how truly quirky they were for the time. No 13 baby is fucking wild. I think they have a masterful rock pacing about them, and i think this album is a fantastic cornerstone for garage rock/grunge if you could even call it that. Guitars be searing. Bass and drums be keeping score. Monkey gone to heaven is based tho im glad I heard that on this one

This is a great album, but I like "Tromp le Monde" better.

great band, still today

Great listen. I liked their 3rd album more but still enjoyed this one. It has a less polished sound to me. Highlights: Dead, Silver Will definitely return to give a deeper listen.

certified bangerrrrrrr. had a lot of fun with this one, no skips, just head bangin at my desk

Im a pixies fan

so so good. always liked pixies but i have a new appreciation for monkey gone to heaven, la la love you, gouge away.

Very good album would listen again

# Album Name: Doolittle # Artist: Pixies # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Good album. First half is strong. Couple of hits but surrounded by other good tunes. Overall a good album. Ill come back t othis one. It was a much better experience than when i seen this band live i tell ya! # Top Tunes: MGH / debaser / here comes your man / hey # Would I listen to it again? yes

Some classics, pretty similar across the board not their most dynamic but definitely a strong one. La La Love you is funny.

Good!!

Multiple standout songs

amazing throughout, all songs are great

Its a rare treat to have so many songs glisten as you blast through an album. Fun and enjoyable quirky rock and I love them. Interesting album as those not as typically gravitating towards their style might have been hooked in by the odd catchy jingle of songs like "here comes your man".

Another great album. Probably my least favourite of the ones we've had (preferred surfa rosa and come on pilgrim) as this one probably ventures into the slightly twee more often, but i'm being picky.

Awesome. Rock at its finest.

500 days of summer JGL karaoke scene. Boxcar waitingggggggg!!!! Great lyrics

Definitely a lot more coherent than their first album and easier to enjoy. Although this one doesn't have any of those must-hear songs.

Älskade när Monkey gone to heaven come och när Here comes your man kom så var jag snabbt och köpte singeln. Det stannade där. Blev aldrig så att jag hörde fullängdaren. Jag hade gillat den då. Tycker den har något idag.

la rellet

Ah yes, the "White Light/White Heat" for indie and grunge. Launched a thousand bands and continues to pile up references, critical praise, and influences. I wonder how things might have been different for me if I'd been exposed to the Pixies during my college days instead of as an afterthought once the grunge wave hit and I wanted to know who Pearl Jam and Nirvana were all googoo over. (Of course, at the time, my favorite band was Queensryche, so take my taste with a grain of salt...)

Great little compilation of post-punk-esque tracks, featuring a vocalist that’s unusually good for the genre and some fantastic musicianship (or a very convincing guise of it) in the guitars, bass, and drums. “Highlight moments” include some short, well-placed bass or drum breaks. The Pixies know how to utilise silence and drastic, rapid changes in musical texture, which I think is a really under-utilised element in 21st-century popular music. It makes the material a heck of a lot more engaging. Here Comes Your Man is the obvious pick for a lead single, having a memorable, catchy guitar line and a fairly strong melody. The guitar sound is thick and highly distorted in most tracks, which can get a little distracting but is used for some pretty nifty transitions (as in the final track, Gouge Away). There aren’t any bad tracks here, but there are a few questionable elements that take away from the otherwise very musical, dynamic, and professional sound. The repeated out-of-tune falsetto in Hey is done well, I think, but in other tracks like Mr Grieves and No 13 Baby (and in fact most of the songs), the singing being out of tune sounds bad – as expected. It’s an element of punk I really wish hadn’t made it into the mainstream. The late 60s and early 70s tended to showcase skill over memorable personas. And that’s what makes it such a legendary period for music, in my opinion. Once you arrive at the punk and post-punk period, a lot of the convention is thrown out the window simply because it’s the standard, and the standard is always bad, right? 4/5 Key tracks: Here Comes Your Man, Hey, Gouge Away

Classic, good vibe setter, feels very important in the indie rock culture

This one reminds me of early Flaming Lips where it’s a little shitty and that’s what makes it really good. I think I like it a smidge less than Surfer Rosa overall, even tho this is definitely the more popular of the two.

This is maybe the most Pixies album of all the Pixies albums. I love Kim Deal's voice. They have a sound for sure, but this is definitely them at their peak. I guess they were broken up by the time the Judgement Night soundtrack came out, but they would have been a good candidate to play while Cypress Hill rapped. Here Comes Your Man is the hit, maybe their biggest hit, but I never thought of it as one of their better songs. Monkey Gone to Heaven is much better. Hey has the second most listens on Spotify but I have no memory of it. I like it though. I think that I think I like the Pixies more than I do. A good album, not great.

monky :)

Chef kiss

You can hear the influence and inspiration this album spurred

Solid album with some really great tracks. I enjoyed this but maybe a little bit because of the name recognition.

The seminal Pixies album for me.

Fantastic album. It fell just short of a 5-star rating from me due to the last few songs feeling a little duller. 4.5/5

Doolittle is a solid album and you can definitely hear how much it influenced Nirvana and a ton of other '90s alternative bands. It's chaotic in the best way—loud, weird, catchy, and full of energy. The quiet-loud-quiet dynamic the Pixies leaned into helped define a generation of rock music. Songs like “Debaser” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven” are standouts, but even the deeper cuts have their charm. Not every track is a hit, but the album’s raw edge and offbeat personality keep it interesting all the way through. Favorite song: Wave of Mutilation

7.5/10. This has an interesting an nostalgic sound to it.

I really like the sound and energy of this album and every song is a banger. Favorite Song: "Hey"

My kind of thing. 04/04/25

Really dug this! Made me think of some of my more modern favourites like Canadian band Mother Mother and sadly defunct Australian band Yves Klein Blue. Favourite tracks were probably Debaser and Monkey Gone to Heaven. Will be checking out more! (4.5 stars)

Good sounding alt rock, not my absolute favourie sound, but highly enjoyable. 4 stars

Has some truly classic iconic cuts like Debaser, Wave Of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone To Heaven. Also for an album under 40 minutes it got a lot of jokey, uninspired crap tracks too. At its very best it is a perfect blend of surf-rock, power-pop and noise onslaught. Whilst Frank Black’s screeches are super effective on some songs, it is annoying for the most part and he does sound like Iago the Parrot with cowboys, hissing cats and chainsaws fighting it out in his throat. More like a patchy 3.5 stars but rounded up to 4 because the very best songs definitely make this worthy of the 1001 list.

Oh god noooo, this is more of the same late-80s early-90s alt grunge again! Someone please tell me what is so unique and amazing about this album. Okay so it was the first of its kind and inspired like, every alt album since. I just think Pavement and Mitski did it better :) Four stars because I see and respect the influence of it all. That said, some great tracks where the style and/or tempo switch up fluidly bar to bar in a really pleasant way: Monkey's Gone to Heaven, Dead, Tame, Mr. Grieves, There Goes My Gun. The end of the album was not for me. I've decided whenever I get some 90s grunge esque repeat albums on this list that I'm going to look up "albums that should have been on the 1001 list" and listen to one of those instead. Today's is The Shaggs Philosophy of the World. Perfect mix of musical insanity and cult adoration plus zany backstory that I want to hear before I die.

classic… debaser on ncaa football

i did kinda like this actually, most songs were really unique and memorable imo

Decent enough, love here comes your man but some of the songs sounded like Adam sandler was singing them. The lead singer didn’t need to scream like that on debased. Fav song - here comes your man Least fav - Silver Specific rating - 3.9

I liked it! would definitely listen again

pov: 15 year old Katie singing Monkey Gone to Heaven on the way home from school with dad and brother

I read that a couple tracks were used as inspiration by Kurt Cobain to make “Smells like Teen Spirit”. It makes sense, Doolittle covers similar imagery that 90s grunge is centered around. Lots of guitar, drums, bass. Very standard alt-rock. Reminds me of Irish punk rock a little, maybe that makes sense since I read that these guys did better in Europe than America throughout the late 80s and 90s.

So solid. Loud, quiet, abrasive yet has some subtlety as well. The more I hear the Pixies, the more I like them.

This one's my favorite Pixies record. Surfer Rosa is, like, objectively cooler? But this one is a better vibe.

History is going to look back on the early part of the 21st century and there will be a list of the biggest fuck-ups of the century. On that list will be: • Blockbuster not getting their shit together and laughing at an offer to buy Netflix • America not getting their shit together and electing Donald Trump • America not getting their shit together and electing Donald Trump. Again. and, of course • Black Francis not getting his shit together and running Kim out of the band. This band was SOOO good with Kim.

Last time I listened to this album (when I was 16) I kinda forced myself to like it, but now it awoke something within me. I adored it from start to finish. 8/10 Fave track: Debaser

Really cool album that channels the bubbling discontent with 1980s American society very effectively. I happen to prefer Surfer Rosa, but the Pixies kick ass.

i mean just a classic punk classic certified punk rock indie punk post punk neo proto punk classic certified classic

Most mainstream-accessible Pixies. Even some hits! There were still some songs that drowned into the background, but always something that made me perk back up. SoCal vibe detectable throughout. Not sure where that influence on the guitars came from, but I like it!

Debaser: 4.6/5 - strong start of an album, guitar background make this song so powerful Tame: 3.8/5 - vocals don’t convince me at first, but I like this song more every time I listen to it Wave of Mutilation: 4.4/5 - the lyrics corespond with the music tempo, even tho I prefer UK Surf version I Bleed: 4/5 - brilliant transfer of emotions Here Comes Your Man: 4.4/5 - classic, simple but genius Dead: 3.7/5 - different than the other songs in the album, it sounds bland compared to them, but it has it’s good moments Monkey Gone to Heaven: 4.4/5 - references to the Bible, catchy chorus and great instrumental work Mr. Grieves: 4.3/5 - at first I was sure I wouldn’t like it, after all it remains to be one of my favs Crackity Jones: 3.9/5 - what can I say, it was.. fast La La Love You: 4/5 - I like the guitar solo at the begging, in some moments it reminds me of The Smiths No. 13 Baby: 3.9/5 - a mix of calm and powerful vocals, what I like the most was the guitar riffs at the second part There Goes My Gun: 3.8/5 - less catchy than others imo, but again guitar saves this Hey: 4.5/5 - my favourite part are the verses, but chorus make this song come together, it’s just a perfect harmony Silver: 3.5/5 - I wouldn’t guess it’s Pixies song if I have to tbh, the vibes are nothing alike Gouge Away: 4.5/5 - I like the bass at the background and the chorus ofc Overall rating: 4.11/5

I have to admit it, but I was really hesitant to listen to this album since i HATE "Here comes your man" I DESPISE that song. To my surprise I really enjoyed it, especially towards the end. The first two or three songs were very repetitive but very good overall. My favorite ones were "Monkey gone to Heaven" y "Gouge Away"

This rips. So many good tracks. A couple of clunkers for me (when they're too noisy or a bit dull), but the accumulation of songs here is quite a feat.

Another great album by Pixies. Previously, I only knew them for one song, you know what it was. The songs were a decent length for their genre. One unusual thing I noticed about "Doolittle" is that the other tracks are better than the singles. The album concludes with the banger "Gouge Away". 4 stars for "Doolittle".

The Pixies aren’t for everyone, and Doolittle is a perfect example of why. It’s screamy, unpredictable, and takes some getting used to, but once you tune into its weird, off-kilter wavelength, you can start to see why it’s considered so influential. There’s a rawness to it that feels deliberately abrasive—one minute you’re in a sweet surf-rock melody, the next Black Francis is howling like a man possessed. Tracks like Debaser and Wave of Mutilation hit with manic energy, while Here Comes Your Man offers a rare moment of breezy, radio-friendly relief. It’s chaotic, messy, and at times downright bizarre, but there’s no denying that it paved the way for countless alternative bands that followed. That said, Doolittle isn’t the best Pixies album, and it’s not quite a classic in the sense of being something you instinctively return to over and over again. It’s fascinating in its contrasts—loud-quiet-loud dynamics, absurdist lyrics, and that signature mix of beauty and aggression—but it’s not always an easy listen. Some songs hit hard, others feel like experiments that work more in theory than in practice, but you can’t say it lacks innovation. The way it bridges punk, surf rock, and something completely unhinged is what makes it important. For what it is, Doolittle is a bold and influential record, and you can hear echoes of it in everything from Nirvana to Radiohead to the entire ‘90s alt-rock explosion. But is it the kind of album you put on constantly? Probably not. It’s more of a landmark than a go-to, but as far as alternative rock touchstones go, it’s still a solid 4/5.

always fun

Not mad into them but there are some total classics

I forgot how good this album was. Thanks I needed that.

I thought it was produced in 21st century. I would love to give it a 5 but there is a great swing in quality of the songs. Some are fabulous, especially 'Silver' stole my heart some are just avarage. Almost 5.

Was cool already know it

"this monkey gone to heaven" said the woman to the man she adoooores

If man is 5, then the devil is 6, and if the devil is 6, then God is 7

aaaaahh értem már hogy a nirvana mit szeretett ezen :D

++*: Debaser ++: Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Dead, La La Love You, No. 13 Baby +: Tame, I Bleed, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Hey, Silver, Gouge Away +-: Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones, There Goes My Gun 7,7/10

A great album … can’t get better than opening with Debaser (maybe they should have put that last 😆)

big fan

It was much better than I thought it would be. This is why I like this project, you hear new artist and albums you never knew about.

Can't believe I've never listened to the Pixies before in any real sense! I loved this album. My favorite track was the opener - Debaser.

Mocne 7/10

Debaser and Here comes your man are already my favorite Pixies songs. Kim's vocal delivery is always so good throughout the album and her bass riffs are so groovy. Black's energy is always so addictive and his lyrics are intriguing, and catchy as well.

This Pixies record is arguably even better than their previous one. Great album all around, although not one I often come back to. The quiet-loud dynamics on a lot of its songs were big precursor to the alt-rock that dominated the first half of the 90's. Key tracks: Debaser Here Comes Your Man Monkey Gone to Heaven La La Love You Gouge Away

This is such a great album

I own this album so it's safe to say that I really like it. It's very chilled out with great lyrics and music. I remember listening to it when I was young and it still feels young and fresh to me, like it could have been released last week. I'm sure this is just my bias though. This album is great and I really like the whole thing.

Such a great album with a great early alternative rock feel :) monkeys go to heaven!!

Good. I liked it. Definitely ahead of its time, but I don't know much it is my vibe. 4/5 would probably listen again, but not in a hurry to.

7/10. Maybe 7.5, I liked the flow and pace of the album but it also had a few meh moments.

The 90s in a nutshell. Not music I would have listened to at the time, but appreciate the sound now.

71/100. A nicely produced alternative rock record from the Pixies. This album also incorporates a strong punk influence throughout.

A really terrific album, leading to the "Nirvana sound" that came out a few years later. Love the bass throughout -- Kim Deal was/is the real deal, indeed. Sorry this group didn't stay together longer, but The Breeders were a nice second act.

Had heard of this band but never really listened to their music. Pleasantly surprised by this album, lot of interesting textures and grooves.

An album full of absolute bangers. Also felt short and sweet, somehow. Probably going to add it to the rotation somewhere, so definitely one of the bigger successes of this list. Pretty close to a five, probably could grow into it over time (there are a few 4s already that I regret not making 5s).

Classic

8,5/10 Highlights: Debaser Monkey Gone to Heaven Hey Gouge Away

I really really liked this!! I didn't get much chance to listen to it all but everything I heard I loved. There was even a song on it that I'd already been listening to 'here comes your man'. Definitely gonna reach for this album in the future

Got some great songs but a couple of duda too

Will review more later

I've always thought of Surfer Rosa as my favorite Pixies album but damn if this one isn't edging in. It's such a great album. It's recorded well, played well, great compositions. I like that it has some darker songs and some more accessible, almost-pop songs. It holds up really well listening to it 35 years later. It's weird, it's dark, it's uniquely Pixies. I love it. I think I rated Surfer Rosa as a 4/5 and I'll do the same here. Probably should have rated both as a 5 but here we are.

I love the dynamics on the record, you can feel that they are refining their sound after a really good first album. And of course it's a prominent record of the late 80s, its influence can be hear in lots of albums of the early 90s. It concludes perfectly with Gouge Away.

Solid stuff right here.

Really enjoyed this album. Close to a 5 for me

Good album! Recognized some of the songs as singles that played on the radio.

I’ve never liked the Pixies, but forcing myself ti listen to this changed that. Solid album

C: 7/10 It's fascinating to hear how similar so many 90s/'00s bands I listened to as a kid sound to this album. It sounds like it might have come out 10 years ago rather than 36. This came out 2 months before Nirvana's first album Bleach! It's an innovative sound and structure but albums to follow would improve upon or respond to. Great vocals. Quiet-loud-quiet thing. Not sure i'll go back to it a ton. Faves: i bleed, la la love you

3.5/5 fav listen: here comes your man, crackity jones least fav: debaser, tame

Great album

This slays. The opening riffs/bass lines to each song was soooo good and made me think oh hell yeah this is it each time. Super solid rock album also oh boy the drums!!

Nice punk album. Despite being released 1989, still has a modern and fresh sound.

Practiced lacklustre is a neat skill. The Pixies have this skill as well as unlikely coolness and a front man with a knack for zany songwriting. Very good album with a few classic surfy grunge hits. Tame is my personal favourite, ‘hips like Cinderella’ is a killer phrase. Few skippable songs, but plenty of sloppy riffs and pop songs earn Doolittle 4 stars.

I really like this album, though maybe more for the other albums it inspired through the 90s alt-rock craze.

Great. Loved it. Will probably get bumped to a 5 after I listen to this a bunch. 4.5/5

3.9 Objectively a great album but idk its never quite stuck with me. faves: here comes your man, debaser, gouge away

This was fun, but a little one-note. Four stars.

Very good alt rock album! 4/5

Best Pixies album imo, keeps you guessing with different grooves throughout. Good vocals and catchy tunes.

Really enjoyed this. Spotify has been pushing a few of these tracks onto me for a while now but the album overall was a great package.

I listened to this album a few times over 25 years ago then never thought about it again to be honest. Listening again now it’s not at all what I remember, it’s actually a lot better than I originally thought and maybe I should of listened to it more often. You can certainly hear who they were influenced by (Beatles?) and who was influenced by them (Pretty much every guitar based band since). I shall investigate the other albums I think.

Very powerful yet with ominous undertones. Love Hey. Would give between 4 and 5 if possible.

This is a project that I’ve liked for a long time. For me, it’s an above average 80’s rock album that is an excellent alternative (lol) to the popular rock of the time. Hardcore fans of the Pixies will call this a masterpiece alongside Surfer Rosa (which I find a little superior). I think it’s a little short of that: Waves of Mutilation is a banger and one of their better songs, but while there are no duds on the rest of the album there aren’t any memorable tracks either. It’s still very good and unmistakably Pixies.

Hell yeah. Some great hits on here like Debaser and Gouge Away. Really love the loud quiet dynamic on here.

I was 12 when this came out and that made it too soon for me. I wouldn’t have appreciated it then. This is an incredible album. Weird and raw, but somehow still very well put together. The standout tracks are some of the most unique songs I’ve ever heard. Some seem a bit “filler” to me, but I probably just need more time with it.

I really like how varied this album is. There’s some scream-y punk stuff, some more melodic stuff. Some I disliked, some I really like. 4 stars mainly because it was interesting and kept me engaged throughout.

4 really good album with some really great songs. But there’s a few stinkers

I liked this album. I see where a lot of bands like Nirvana use the Pixies as a major inspiration. I do think the highs of this album are very high ("Wave Of Mutilation" , "Here Comes Your Man" , and "No 13 Baby") and the lows are low ("Silver" and "Mr. Grieves") Actually 3.75 I also feel like during this album they knew their sound and were more confident in it a lot more than during the album "Bossanova" Liked Songs: "Debaser" , "Wave Of Mutiliation" , "Here Comes Your Man" , "Dead" , "Crackity Jones" , "No 13 Baby" , "Gouge Away"

Like the last pixies record I had high hopes and wasn’t disappointed. Interesting album would listen again. Just the right mix of weird and melody.

Wow! I haven't listened to Pixies in ages. Doolittle is one of the albums that is part of the soundtrack of my adolescence. I have great memories of Here Comes Your Man among others... However, this album hasn't aged very well, in terms of sound. The songs are still very good but not good enough for a full 5-star rating. I'll give it 4 today!

All time classic for a reason

This is my third, and last, Pixies album from this project. I have ended up similarly to where I started, which is I think I do like the Pixies and still may be a "greatest hits" type of person. Doolittle is my favorite album of all the ones I have heard and is the album I would choose if I had to hear one album by the Pixies. There isn't really any filler on here. Debaser Wave of Mutilation Here Comes Your Man Monkey Gone to Heaven Mr. Grieves No 13 Baby There Goes My Gun Gouge Away These are my favorite songs from this one. I didn't like Hey all that much for some reason. It didn't grab me really. Really wonderful album.

This is a wild ride from start to finish. The Pixies blend raw energy, catchy melodies, and weird, wonderful lyrics into a sonic assault that's both exhilarating and disorienting. Tracks like "Debaser" and "Gouge Away" are pure adrenaline, while quieter moments like "Here Comes Your Man" showcase a different side of the band. It's an album that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers of complexity and brilliance with each spin.

It had some fun moments. Some touching moments. Solid 4 stars from me.

the obvious influence on the white stripes is hilarious

Knowing only the main singles, this is a pretty wild record. Lots of protopunk/90's grunge roots to some still very catchy songwriting. Cool blends of ska/reggae, jangle pop, punk and alternative rock. Really to the point too not overly long. besides here comes your man, wave of mutilation and debaser: i'd say check out mr. grieves, la la love, crackity jones, hey and monkey goes to heaven.

Ok I see it now. With the context of Santa Rosa, this noise becomes clearer. Still don’t fully understand each turn this album takes but the hits makes sense

Ok, ive hady fair share of landfill american college rock, but this seems to be the best if the bunch. Good songs with good hooks, lots of punchy guitar, lots of variation and lots of scuzzy sound. This is much better.

I like that this album kinda runs around multiple (rock) genres without ever losing the key Pixies sound. There are pop songs, punk songs, proto-grunge songs, etc. Since nothing is super long, if you don't like one you could just keep listening because it'll end soon enough. I love the bassline and drums in particular in their sound. They're always so crisp and interesting, never just there because they have to be. I'm not as much of a fan as the vocals as others are but they work just fine here. Musically this is really great. Not much to complain about at all. I enjoyed this.

An absolute classic. Though their initial efforts in Surfer Rosa already went well, the Pixies still really pushed to create something amazing. Changing the production style made the grime clearer, but no less dirty. Influential to scores of some of the greatest musicians in the 90's. Created a sound so pervasive that it influenced culture. Not to be missed 4.5/5

Really enjoyed it and listened multiple times. Looking forward to hearing some more Pixies.

Really liked this one. Will need another listen.

Complex and profound. A BIG four stars. Grounded a little bit by the production which is a good thing. Pixies can be a lot to take but they do a nice job here of overcoming their more out of control tendencies to make a very listenable album. Takes a few times through to really get it. Well worth the effort.

Wow. I’m not sure what I expected going into this record, but it wasn’t this. The opening bassline really surprised me. I didn’t know Pixies were such a surfy band. As a matter of fact, Kim Deal’s bass blew me away pretty much the entire album. Most of the playthrough I was thinking about how much this reminds me of nirvana, and upon further reading, this album was apparently quite influential on Kurt Cobain, which checks out. It really feels almost like a wonderful precursor to the grunge movement. There’s a really neat contrast between soft, quieter moments but they almost always seem to lead into violent crescendos. It’s as punk rock as it is rock and roll, and that’s a balancing act that often ends up cringy and lame, but this album really pulls it off well. This is an album I really want to listen to a few more times, as there’s so many interesting instrumental nuances within the chaos. So far “I Bleed” stands out as my favourite track. 4*

I could understand why someone wouldn't like this album - to say it's mostly a bunch of simplistic, loud guitar riffing with obtuse lyrics isn't entirely untrue. But the Pixies manage to do it in a way that no one else does and for me, it really works. Within the simplistic, loud guitar riffing there is a lot of interesting variation and I think both musically and lyrically they take inspiration from a wide variety of subjects. Mostly it's just a lot of fun. I love Kim Deal's bass playing and her vocals, though they aren't very prominent on this album they add a lot. 8/10

It was cool, not really outstanding

Really liked debaser and here comes your man

Highlights: Debater, I Bleed, Hey

I know nothing about this album other than my wife loved them. Looking forward to this. So much better than i expected, i get the hype

Hadn’t listened to this in decades! I had thought I preferred Surfer Rosa, but I just listened to that too, and Doolittle is better—a more consistent sound and more memorable tunes.

Pretty good start with 'debaser' and I also like 'maze of mutilation'. A band that plays actual songs even though they are all a kind of dark, but different. They are not afraid to refer back to the 60s/70s with songs like 'here comes a man', I like it. 'mr. grives' is another track I like; in fact I enjoyed the whole album!. This album shows an evolution from what went previously, rather than a reaction to it; perhaps that is why I like it. I also appreciate the honest production. A group I would listen to again, if I had the time.

Great album! I loved the opening track, as well as most of the others. I recognised “Here Comes Your Man”.

Very good album. Not one I have ever actually listened all the way through, so being able to shows how great this album really is. Super strong sound and energy.

Really good album. New to me but its right up my alley

weird but I like it, think it influences a lot of bands I like too

I'll never really love this genre but this was good.

yim yum ! probably deserves a relisten from me tho highlights: here comes your man, dead, monkey gone to heaven, hey (sep 12 2024)

debaser... debaser... maybe black francis should move a bit closer to the mic. pretty fun though. as of "waves of mutilation" i find myself thinking "oh.... this is what weezer and smashing pumpkins and all of that other stuff is trying to be" but it's a bit less accessible, y'know. sort of esoteric and the melodies don't want to give you peace of mind (which some would call "pop influence"). honestly this is better than i thought it would be. not really much more to say (as of "dead"). i feel like this is just garage rock for people who are like too pretentious to listen to garage rock. like early ty segall but in a studio. it's still good, but i feel like it's so similar and i like the raw garage feel more anyway. overall, pretty fun and fresh record for 1989. good songs, good vibes... but they shoulda played it RAW!!
