Reviews (page 5 of 14)
This is a hit record despite being noisy and strange, because at the same time it has great melodies and power. It almost invented 90s Grunge and Alternative Rock, neither Nirvana nor Radiohead would have sounded like they did without this. But most importantly it is just an awesome listen.
9/10 Highlights: Monkey Gone to Heaven Gouge Away Hey Debaser Mr Grieves
A lot of different styles and influences in this album. It's weird and chaotic and I love it.
Absolutely vital to who I am to this day. First concert was Pixies on this tour - Ritz, NYC with Happy Mondays opening. I have no way of being objective. Some will say Surfer Rosa is the better album. But this one has the better production, IMO. And you can dance to it.
What can I even say? Its fucking Doolittle, the band are in total sync, the pacing is perfect and the melodic edge is remarkable. 5 stars.
It's the Pixies!
The first time I heard this record, I was completely taken aback. It was so fresh, so unexpected, something I heard but hadn't heard before. It basically cleared out all the cobwebs at the time on it's first play. Exhilarating .....
5.0 - Another blockbuster on par with "Daydream Nation" that set the template for so much of the 90's music I enjoyed as a kid. Every song on here holds a surprise - like Frank Black's scream-whisper vocals on "Tame", or the paranoid guitar squeals on the chorus of "I Bleed."
YEAHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Haven't ever listened to it all the way through but man!! This is what music is all about In My Humble Opinion
That opening Kim Deal bass line on “debaser”sucks me in every time. Every track on this album is pure passion and artistry. It’s an incredible feat to produce an album that still feels fresh and vibrant as it did when it came out 35 years ago.
love the energy on this one. i dont know how it stands next to their prior record, but im pretty positive about both. feel like this one is more polished, maintaining of course the crazy and silly sound of the pixies. also love the way most songs are bass driven, gives it such a cool sound. its crazy to me that the album is built around them having fun with their own goofy songs. and thats exactly what makes me like. dont listen to it very often but when i do i feel good.
One of the rare albums as soon as it was finished I put it back on again. it's a powerful impact but crucially has great beats underpinning it.
In my top 10.
One of my favorite albums!
TIL that several songs that I thought were Nirvana songs are in fact by the Pixies. Love it still.
One of the greatest - Here Comes Your Man - Monkey Gone to Heaven - Hey
This is great, amazing sound. Finally understand some Bloodhoundgang references.
This is just one of those I can't help but hold in the highest regard. As the kids say these days, "this shit is bussin".
I have always loved this album but haven’t listened to it in entirety in years! Forgot how amazing it is in full!
Really fucking great album. I don't have much to say, this album just makes you feel awesome. All bar one song (no 13 baby) is strong enough to be a single, but they are all so much better in the context of the album. Monkey Gone to Heaven is up there with my favourite songs of all time. I dunno whether it's frowned upon to give something 5 stars if you don't think it's perfect, but this is pretty fucking close to it and it's getting a straight 5. 5/5 Fav track: Monkey Gone to Heaven
Jesus christ there are so many hits on this album. It has such a masterful control of tone and tambre, leans just the right amount into eccentricity whilst retaining its raw power. Love almost every song on this and it's cohesive experience is just as good. Fave track: Monkey Gone to Heaven
In all it’s simplicity and complexity, this is one of the greatest rock albums ever. Masterful production over this whole project, and a perfect demonstration of the band’s ability to control their dynamic tone. It’s sweet and gritty, catchy and powerful, loud and quiet and loud again. Not a bad track - a joy from beginning to end. 5 stars. Fave tracks: Hey & Mr Grieves
treat yo self
Part of my personal top ten albums
It is such a fucking good album.
Iconic post-punk, spikey, stupid. Genuinely laugh-out-loud with a mean edge. Overwhelmingly influential but imitations pale in comparison, even when produced by the pixies themselves. No, this was a special moment that made a special album, let's leave it at that.
The highest achievement of alternative rock. It’s as eclectic and weird as it is philosophical and catchy, many popular rock bands from the 90s owe their success to this monumental record.
It's a 5 star for me! Love the Pixies!!
Love the Pixies. Love this album.
Unapologetically love this album. "Hey", "Wave of Mutiliation", "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Debaser" are all amongst my favorite 80s songs. Every song has a different feel, but the energy remains the same. Its loud and punk throughout but with tender touches. The vocal duality of Black Francis and Kim Deal is magical. Such a fun band and album. 4.5 stars but I'm rounding up on this one.
Love it! Always have always will
A huge influence on so much that I love, and a great record in its own right.
What an album! So many amazing tunes on here, my god! Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Hey.. They've got a bit of an anarchic edge to them. Lots of weird and wonderful compositions and approaches, but then just tons of catchy hooks and choruses as well. The combination of male and female vocals... It works so well as an overall album.
10/10, a straight high 5. Shall I just put that? No, sorry. This is in my top 50 albums of all time (I must make a definitive list). I saw them live touring this album, a great experience. I still have this on vinyl and know it off by heart. Quiet quiet loud loud angry screechy quiet. Best tracks - all of them. I've always said that music has to elicit and make one feel emotion, this one does. The joy of 'Debaser', the anger of 'Tame, the melancholy of 'This Monkeys Gone To Heaven'' all standout tracks, my other two standouts being 'I Bleed', with the rumble of Kim Deal's bass which eventually leads into where it sounds like Black Francis trying to make the guitar bleed as well as his fingers. 'No.13 Baby' has a wonderful change in tempo and mood. On the quirky 4AD label which has had a fantastic rosta of bands over the years. Thank you John Peel for playing tracks from their previous album in 1988, it was another life changing moment which led to lots of different bands I love.
Still a perfect album for me.
My favorite pixies album and one of my favorite albums of all time.
Debaser Wave of Mutilation Here Comes Your Man Monkey Gone to Heaven Hey Gouge Away
4.8/5 - Never fully dove into them and wow am i regretting it. Suck a personal creative sound. I loved every song.
seminal album in the indie world and in my own personal world. I've listened to this album hundreds (maybe thousands) of times and really enjoyed listening to it again after so long. It holds up!
Certainly in my personal top ten albums of all time, this is a track by track experience in perfection. A musical style almost all of their own but certainly influencing many others and a set of songs that burst with energy but are proper songs.
Classic
Listened to this for the thousandth time just to be sure it would get a 5 and yes it gets a 5. This is a top 10 album for me. So concise, dynamic, funny. Love the lyrics, the vocals, the percussion.
one of the ones where you just go "yeah of course this is one the list"
Favorites: Debaser Monkeys Gone to Heaven There Goes My Gun Silver Already love this album. Very repetitive but I really love this album, definitely my favorite Pixies album. It was honestly hard to choose favorites on this one, almost all of the songs are great.
The soundtrack of a generation. No grunge, no indie rock, no Radiohead would exist without them.
This band has come a bit in recommended for me before. I liked it, worth investigating more.
The sound from outer space.
Oh fuck yeah! I didn't realize this album had so many hits. I never heard the whole thing through. I'm diggin it. I've kind of been distracted with work and paying bills and updating my budget spreadsheet so I haven't been 100% tuned in. But I've looked over to Spotify to see what the name of songs have been when something catches my attention. I recognized Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, and Monkey Gone to Heaven so far. 5 stars
Weird and cool
SLICING UP EYEBALLS!!! OW OW OW OWWW!!!
there's no need for any other albums this week. i'll just keep spinning this one. see also the breeders for more of bassist Kim Deal kicking all the ass.
Amazing album, been hearing it for years and never gets old.
This album I’m all seriousness changed my life for the better. Many days spent listening to with great friends. Miss those days! Easily 5 stars
I love it
Обожаю треки Hey, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Debaser. Добавлено 12 треков.
Nuce
Basically flawless
La la love this album, don't mean maybe
Life-changer
One of my favourite albums
Goodness gracious this was fantastic. This is just the kind of biting alt rock that I didn't know I missed so much. The hardest part now is trying to choose between this and their debut as my favorite Pixies venture.
I think this is the best Pixies on the list, something about its rusty quality draws me in. Definitely makes me want more too, with just the right length.
Musicality: 4 - great songs, unique, very catchy Production & Sound: 4 - bit raw but it sets an atmosphere Artistic Expression: 5 - very unique, emotional and powerful Performance: 5 - tremendous passion, everyone does their job Engagement & Enjoyment: 5 - Very entertaining and good for repeat listens I love it, fantastic album, timeless
This album rocks. Don’t have anything bad to say about it.
Near perfect, good enough for 5 stars
It's the album that really defines The Pixies.
Total classic.
It's the best Pixies album, by a whisker. Don't need to say much more than that
Musical perfection.
“Monkey Gone To Heaven” and “Hey” are easily two of the bands best songs. Yet everything else on the album is still consistent amazing.
this sounded both timeless and completely new when it came out. It had all the raw energy of the hard post punk that came before it but was also clean and meticulous in production. Seems like the bands in the 90's tried to constantly live up to it.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH, ONE OF MY FAVS OF ALL TIME!
Classic. Heard it many many times and always brilliant!
-okay so i know this artist And this album because tame is one of my favorite songs -i really love the pixies sound in general -debaser is SO GOOD -LOOOOOVE TAME ITS SO GOOOOOOD -cannot get over that song -the yelling at the end is the BEST -oh this might be another 5 star album….. -wave of mutilation is also a great song…… i am in AWE -the guitar in i bleed is awesome -THATS WHAT THIS SONG IS? i know this one!!! -okay but a song about a monkey going to heaven is crazy -this is SUCH an easy 5 stars for me -this album is so well balanced and personally for me, none of the songs fall flat
Hits the right spot for rock, cohesive album.
Just about the most important indie rock album of the last 40 years.
Hit after hit and still sounds fresh
i think this will only get better with more listens.
Top 5 albums from the 90s, incredible shit
De Pixies, wereldberoemd door een quote van the Bloodhound Gang: "I'm not black like Barry White, I am white like Frank Black is".
I LOVE THIS ALBUMM ABSOLUTELY AMAZING I LOVE THE PIXIES
Wow. All bangers and good variation between tracks.
An old favorite. All good songs!
Feelgood Rock, easy, schön anzuhören
9/10
Perfection! This is everything I want, and everything I need from an album. It’s edgy, it’s weird, it’s pioneering and has so much gritty profundity. The production is perfect, it showcases all the unique talents of this group in the most intriguing way. I get lost in these lyrics; they inspire exquisite heartache and tumultuous intellectual pondering in equal measure. Doolittle is a triumph of the most fucking awesome weirdo indie music that was cool for being indie long before indie was ever commoditized by late aughts hipsters and corporate record label tools. This is my favourite Pixies album. I love every track, I love every riff, I love every guttural howl. It is magnificent.
One of the most influential albums of the 80s and one of the greatest achievements in alternative rock Favourite tracks: Debaser, I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr Grieves, Hey
One of my absolute favourite albums! Helped shape 90s grunge. No need to listen now as it's one of my go to albums. I've owned it on every possible medium. 5 stars
Classic
The fiviest five that ever fived.
5 sterren.
A very cool album, some great tunes (Monkey Gone to Heaven is a favourite)
I've heard bits & pieces before but never the entirety. It still sounds fresh to me, and I don't know if that speaks to the music or the fact that my musical tastes crystallized in the 90s when everyone was copying this album.
Decent
5*
This has been in my personal top ten favorite albums for 30+ years. 6 stars.
Inspired countless bands the beginning of alt rock
Holy Shit. It’s sloppy, it’s noisy and the balance/mixing leaves something to be desired. However, I’d be damned to not recognize the passion and genius in so many of these songs. When you think the music is going down some sloppy, noisy path then it just throws in a tasty guitar riff. Really magical blend of quirk with tame structure.
If man is five And if the devil is six Then God is seven This monkey's gone to heaven Fucking excellent album! Great themes and overall sounds, and the tracks are all top 10 stuff. 5/5
A noisy band with pop hooks that influenced a lot of bands. A landmark album.
Frank Black's vocals are absolutely unhinged while Kim Deal's are as sweet as ever. This album is another part of the foundation of alternative rock.
Debaser - 8 Tame - 5 Wave of Mutilation - 8 I Bleed - 6 Here Comes Your Man - 9 Dead - 8 Monkey Gone to Heaven - 8 Mr. Grieves - 10 Crackity Jones - 10 La La Love you - 7 No 13 Baby - 7 There Goes my Gun - 6 Hey - 8 Silver - 5 Gouge Away - 6
I love Doolittle. This is the second or third time I've listened to this album this week. This is a close to perfect album.
One of the finest alternative rock albums of all time. A record that influenced so many including Kurt Cobain.
Just great ❤️
In between their rougher first 2 and their surf-album: best of both worlds. Live they still play maybe of these to delight of public. Almost difficult to find favorite tracks, but possibly Hey and No. 13 Baby. And the Monkey of cause. Man=5. Devil=6. God is 7. Even for atheist that is how it is.
Yea sir, my addiction is dirty bass and chaos. No sir, I’m not looking for a cure.
It’s my birthday and I get blessed with this BANGER!? How’d I get so lucky!?
the unknowable pain of a daughter for her mother. the unknowable pain of a mother for daughter. always reaching, never quite more than brushing fingertips through times cruel passage. let the music play on.
I do love this album. It’s awkward and abrasive and its weirdness makes it unique. It seems like you can find music that was influenced by this album in every year since its release.
First of all it's Pixies, so 5*. Secondly, this is obviously one of the greats, but for me it's not close between this and Surfer Rosa as best Pixies album. I think the album tracks here are weaker (very clearly excluding Tame, Hey, La La Love You, Wave of Mutilation and Gouge Away, half of those obviously would have been singles if it was released in the 90s anyway). I'm coming around to the idea that Trompe Le Monde might be my 2nd favourite Pixies album.
No waste at all
Oh yeah - banger after bange, Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Mr Grieves, La La Love You, Monkey gone to heaven… what a stellar record - the Pixies were mega inspired with this one.
Love this album so much, it's been a go-to for last couple years. Starts off pretty punk with Debaser and Tame - both fairly simple songs but they get my head bobbing. Wave of Mutilation is a weird one, I think Rock Band (Guitar Hero?) may have ruined it for me back in the day. Always feels out of place when I hear it now. Here Come's Your Man is a classic, kind of a funny transition into surfer rock after some heavier songs. Mr Grieves, Crackity Jones and Hey are all great songs, the latter probably being my favourite on the album. This one grew on me a lot over many listens so I wonder what my rating would be if I'd never heard it before this..
Album 88 of 1001 Pixies - Doolittle Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Here Comes Your Man This is a doozy of an album. As I was listening, it seemed that it was something I had been familiar with for a long time. Not sure of its commercial success, but it got by me. This is the 2nd Pixies album I've heard and had a good response to. They may be one for a deeper dive, at some point. Fun album. A bit of everything.
Still love it!
Probably the best alternative rock album out there. It's influenced can be heard in so many places. One of those rare albums where at 14 tracks not a single one is skippable (Love You comes close but just about escapes). I must have listened to it hundreds of times and not once have I got bored and turned it off. Jumping from genre to genre without seeming erratic. Pixies and Black Francis at their/his very best.
On which Pixies perfected their sound, and made one of the best alternative rock/indie albums in the process. There are probably half a dozen genres on here, but they all sound unmistakably, coherently like Pixies songs. It must be in Black Francis’ crazed yelps, Kim Deal’s sing-song backing vocals, the sharp shifts in tempo and volume, the vivid yet impenetrable lyrics, the intertwining of noise and melody, the three/three and a half bar chord sequences, the sense of mischief running through the whole thing… Despite their influence, I can’t think of another band who really sounds like them, which is quite the compliment. 15 tracks and not a stinker among ‘em. And even if there was, it’d be too short to bother skipping.
Great record. Could do without the screaming in Tame and Crackity Jones but other than that, pretty darn flawless.
Doolittle by the Pixies is a seminal alternative rock album that continues to inspire and influence musicians to this day. Released in 1989, it showcases the band's unique blend of loud-quiet dynamics, infectious melodies, and offbeat lyrics. Tracks like "Debaser," "Here Comes Your Man," and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" are standout moments, displaying the band's knack for crafting catchy hooks and juxtaposing dark subject matter with pop sensibilities. The album's production is crisp, enhancing the impact of the band's distinctive sound. While some tracks may not reach the same heights as the standouts, Doolittle remains a must-listen for fans of alternative rock and a testament to the Pixies' enduring legacy.
Some people call this accessible, suggesting the accessibility is a bug instead of a feature. Those people are wrong. The Cobain/Corgan influence is strong with this one. This is also the album featuring "Here Comes Your Man". As a rule, that alone means it's 5 star worthy.
Lo amo y el tema 13 (Hey) tuvo un video YouTube que fue suceso y llevo en mi recuerdo
fajne
A rightful classic. Even the lesser tracks are solid.
Fucking perfect. Pixies figured out how to play real loud, then real quiet, then real loud again, and the world forever changed.
Easily one of the greatest rock albums of the 80’s. Pixies really mastered their dynamic songwriting on this milestone of an album. love how they play really quite AND THEN REALLY FUCKING LOUD!
It's fine.
Fantastic album
Saw Pixies live (with Mercury Rev as support) the same month this album was released. 34 years on it's still a treat to listen to this album and it sends this monkey to heaven every time.
Very good. It’s a struggle to say what genre this is other than Pixies. It’s got a little of everything and is never boring.
One of the few CDs I kept in my car back in the day
Killer bass, killer lyrics
Helden!
Second listen. I can’t believe that the first day I missed an album, I got this one! This might be my favorite Pixies album (or Bossanova). Not sure what to say about it; most of the songs are just really good. Favorite song: “I Bleed”.
Pretty artsy. Very very based. Good work pixies. Super cool. I like it. It was good. Have a nice one. David Bowie rip off.
I regret i was too young when this one came out, this one would definitely be a staple of my record collection
Brilliant album, quite heavy and dark at times, enjoyable all the way through. Many favourite tracks, but the best probably is “Here comes your man”, “Monkey gone to heaven” or “Gouge Away”. 9/10
5. This is one of the albums that taught me what a bassist can bring to a band. It's quirky in the right amounts. It rocks.
love this album so much wow so raw n funny n just sick
YASSSSS! I can listen to this all day long.
Celui la c'est facile
Listened to this one a few weeks ago. So fun, diverse, and heavily 90s. Near 10/10 for me. 4.5/5
I was a couple of years behind the curve on the Pixies when they came out, so when I finally heard them I was listening to their first three albums all at the same time. What great days those were, to discover this band who sounded like nothing else, and had all these albums out in the span of like three years. It would turn out that this band would abruptly fall apart after their first four albums and we wouldn't hear a new album for years. It would also turn out that this band would be acknowledged as one of the most groundbreaking and influential of an entire genre and era. You don't hear albums like this anymore. The album is less rough-edged than its predecessor, Surfer Rosa, with an emerging pop sensibility and some surprisingly catchy melodies. Make no mistake though, this album is all Pixies - the menacing guitars, the twisted and cryptic lyricism, the off-kilter harmonies, Black Francis' quiet-to-raging vocal style. It all adds up to a sound that just pulls you in and doesn't let go. The band burns through 15 tracks in 38 minutes like a freaking brush fire. Doolittle isn't a flawless album. Some of the songs sound almost like fragments that needed to be fleshed out more. But it's an album that embraces that fragmentation to create something really vital and haunting. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Wave of Mutilation, Debaser, Gouge Away, Hey, Silver, I Bleed, Dead, Tame, La La Love You, Crackity Jones, There Goes My Gun, No. 13 Baby, Mr. Grieves
Pixies have an amazing discography, and seeing the spinoffs through Frank Black's solo work or the Breeders just shows how much each member is able to contribute. We have the noisy distorted guitar riffs that do whatever they want, but doesn't overtake everyone else like you see in other noise rock or shoegaze albums (Dinosaur Jr comes to mind). This allows the bass to really shine. In most tracks, the guitar stays quiet for many parts to highlight that dark deep bass, which when combined with the punchy drums remind me of many gothic and post-punk records earlier in the 80s. And of course we can't forget Black's vocal style, flawlessly alternating between soothing, anger, and pure screaming chaos. Kim Deal's dreamy vocals compliment Black's incredibly well, adding a catchiness to sing along to for many songs. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" showcases all of these points. Just like with their other albums, we get a ton of really short tracks. But for some reason, each one feels complete despite only 3 of them being longer than 3 minutes. It's their most accessible record, with a level of order and groove to compliment the pure chaos in the noisy riffs and screaming vocals. There are tons of catchy pop tracks here like "Hey" and "Here Comes Your Mind" to pull in most audiences, but even tracks like "Debaser" fuse the two seemingly opposite styles so well. Not only are there so many tracks that could argue to be the best song on here, and thus among the best songs of the 80s, but most of the deep cuts stand out for some reason. "Mr Grieves" reminds me of Violent Femmes, with a southern gothic sound and an incredible bridge. "Crackity Jones" has mindblowing energy that caused me to accidentally speed up to 90mph on the highway. "No 13 Baby" has a killer guitar solo near the end. "There Goes My Gun" is a really fun punk song with a cool beat, surf rock riffs, and vocals that go all over the place. Hard to find a single song I don't really like. "Silver" is very divisive, but I'm on the supporting side.
This is too weird. After being introduced to Throwing Muses earlier this week, I had naturally revisited that second American act 4AD signed in the mid-1980s, another New England-based, outsider alt band: Pixies. In particular, I revisited Doolittle, the band’s high watermark and imperfect masterpiece. To dissect Doolittle’s two album sides independently is a great way to understand the band as a whole. The A Side—“Debaser” through “This Monkey”—is somewhere on the shortlist of great, great album sides. It carefully alternates punk-ish, grinding noise for refinements on a power pop sound. Some songs—“I Bleed” and “Dead”—even make these trades between verses, which strikes me as a surprisingly successful feat. “This Monkey” even weaves strings into the mix which elevates an already strange spectacle into something quite otherworldly. That power pop sound Pixies exhibit so well on Doolittle is one they had only hinted at before with Surfer Rosa’s “Where is My Mind?” But if you were to listen to Surfer Rosa in its entirety, you would assume that magical pop number to be the result of sheer luck, for nothing else on that half-digested, slap-sticky, body-horror-obsessed record gives any indication that this band could record any pop masterpieces let alone 3 on one side of a disc. But they did just that with Doolittle’s “Debaser,” “Wave of Mutilation,” and “Here Comes Your Man.” And a side note on their penchant for b-movie, horror imagery and thematic content. Sometimes Pixies are just too balls-to-the-walls campy. More Joe Dante’s “The ‘Burbs” than Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead II.” Listening to the first two tracks on Surfer Rosa I am reminded of that “I Think You Should Leave” sketch where Tim Robinson attempts to improvise lyrics to a song but can only come up with stuff about skeletons coming out at night and using bones for money. Pixies often rival that comedy and honestly remind me of an act like 100 Gecs in their outsider-ness and pop-cultured tone. Other times—“Debaser,” “Gouged,” “Wave of Mutilation”—their lyrical content strikes a little closer to the absurdist macabre of the Bible or Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, which luckily elevates Doolittle as a whole to a place just beyond silly, alt nonsense. That said, the entire B Side of Doolittle is quite nearly all silly alt nonsense. This is apparent right away with that first sarcastic, faux-ska riff that opens the ridiculous death-obsessed “Mr. Grieves.” That faux-ska riff makes a little more sense in context, what with Pixies being a part of a Boston scene that also had a very active ska subsection (Mighty Mighty Bosstones), but it sounds ridiculous today nonetheless. “Mr. Grieves” goes straight into the absolutely-bonkers mosh-pit cut “Crackity Jones” (more bones references???) and that transition is so quick I had to check several times to see if the song had even changed. “Crackity” then goes into a song that another ska band, Smash Mouth, would very blatantly steal a riff from some 10 years later. Of this song, “La La Love You,” singer/songwriter Francis Black had to say it’s “like a comedy sketch. It’s very simple and sweet but also very ‘fucky-fucky,’ you know?” No. I don’t know, Francis. But I do like it. (And on the subject of future bands ripping off riffs from Doolittle, “I Bleed” will never not make me feel like I’m being Weezered. That song always builds exactly into a place where I’m conditioned to think the chorus from “Undone (The Sweater Song)” is about to drop). Doolittle’s low point is somewhere within the next two tracks, “No 13 Baby” and “There Goes My Gun.” They’re the only two songs that would have been at home on Surfer Rosa notably, in their half-digested nothingness. At best, they’re experiments in pop minimalism. At worst, they’re wannabe Butthole Surfers tracks without any satirical bite. Then, “Hey.” “Hey” is my favorite Pixies song and to me it encapsulates everything that they did so well. It is very much in line with what the Velvet Underground was doing some 20 years earlier with songs like “Heroin,” which is, it breaks down and apart—from the perspective of an outsider, a listener—what a pop song can be, what it means, and attempts to cobble those pieces back together again. “Hey” is the result of a very bizarre puzzle that draws on punk, noise, pop, body horror, death and R&B and congeals itself into a singular, stunning portrait. It’s a song I’ve always been surprised I liked so much and my affection for it has only grown deeper over the years. “Silver” is madcap and weird. Easily my least favorite little foray on Doolittle. But “Gouge” is a perfect closer. Not the high point, but very far from the low point, it surmises all that this record attempts to put together on both sides. And always makes me want to go back and kick things off with “Debaser” all over again. So yeah, not a perfect record, a lot of very weird songs, but some outright masterpieces and a testament to—as Mike Powell put it in his retrospective on the band’s catalogue for Pitchfork—the spark of liberated thinking that often lies behind a bad idea. I find Doolittle inspiring and essential. And I will always treasure it.
Dont need to listen to this album to rate, I know it as well as i know some people. Shouting, swearing, weird sweaty lyrics. Dischordant poppy rock distorted melodies but still a little catchy. It takes you to the heights and back again. All music should be this good
This was an easy 5, classic album that defined and dominated the era for.me
Love this.
On a different day I might be overly critical and give it a 4, but not today, it's a 5 from me!
This album is fucking fantastic. It's an album that will completely change your mood in a good way. Paved the way for a lot of artists. Wonder if Nevermind would've had the sound it does without Doolittle? Get your headphones on and listen to this in any environment and it will just work. Just fucking have it!
epic
One of the best things any band has ever done. On "Doolittle", the Pixies took that fervent punk rock-driven energy they had been refining on "Come On Pilgrim" and "Surfer Rosa", refined it ever-so slightly, and packaged it into 15 incredible songs that would go on to profoundly influence the landscape of alternative and indie rock, and for good reason - these songs kick so much ass.
5 / 5 stars
What a nice surprise! I don't think I've ever listened to them before, but I really enjoyed this album.
Probably their best record an easy 5 stars
savršenstvo. top 3 albuma 80ih. zapravo teško je odrediti top 3 albuma iz 80e.
Flawless. And yet, compared to the breeders, sounds terribly dated. Why is that?
My fucking jam
Excellent. Could be released today and still sound new
OMGOMGOMG All I'm saying, pretty baby... la la love you, don't mean maybe... This album is gold dust back to front, its gorgeous, it's raw, its fun, its everything. it's just a masterpiece.
hay algo para decir de este disco que no se haya dicho antes? no, sin este disco no existiria ni el grunge como lo conocemos, ni el indie como lo conocemos. biblico.
Catchy, dissonant en schizofreen. Top album
Dear friend Simon & I saw Pixies at the Opera House in 2014 as part of the Livid Festival. According to a set-list I found on the net, they played 9 of the 15 songs on Doolittle, &, even without Kim Deal, did a great job. And when I mentioned to Simon that my vinyl of the album had gone with my ex, he also gifted me a spare copy that he had. Now this is a mate. I therefore have many reasons to love this album. Here Comes Your Man is one of the great, great singles. Debaser & Monkey Gone To Heaven are also among the band’s greatest songs. Gouge Away & La La Love You - there’s so much to love here. Thanks so much, Simon.
Hard to think of a more influential or better alternative album than Doolittle. Peter from Scratches put me onto this album when it came out. I loved it then, and I love it now. I have listened to this so many times that every song is imprinted on me. This is an album that I could listen to every day and hear something new in it. It has all the things I like: noise and aggression, energy and space, anger and melancholy. They really wrote the book on the loud/quiet/loud thing. And the songs are short and punchy, and there are some great tunes on here. Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven and Here Comes Your Man are all classic tunes, plus I have a real soft spot for Hey. To quote Mark Moody in Soundblab: "Whereas so many albums of that era sound tinny and dated, Doolittle, by relying on tried and true instrumentation, pop’s structures and melodies with punk’s energy, along with sweet/salty harmonies, remains as fresh sounding today as it was bracingly college rock ready upon its release. For sheer crank up the volume enjoyment, setting aside whatever might be going on lyrically, Doolittle has to be right at the top of the heap of any indie rock collection." If I had to pick one alternative album to give someone to listen to, I would pick this. A deadset classic. [Peter and I saw the Pixies at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall in the 2014. It was professional and tight and loud, but not as raucous as I would have thought they were in their initial hey-day. Kim Deal was notable in her absence, and there just wasn't the life in it that I was expecting. Not that I begrudge them the right to cash in on their legacy, and they certainly weren't terrible, but it didn't have the spark that this album has. Not a terribly sympathetic venue, perhaps. Might have been better to see them somewhere like the Hordern Pavillion. Or get in the way-back machine to 1989 when they were touring this record at the height of their powers.]
I dont even need to listen to this for the who knows how many-th time to rate this as a 5 star album. It's great from beginning to end. Best Pixies album, just a audio treat. I absolutely love it.
Practically a perfect album. Masterpiece front to back and and a huge influence for some of the greatest bands of the 90s and going forward. Easy 5 stars
5 Another good segue from Joy Division - if that band influenced post-punk, new wave, and modern indie, Pixies influenced probably every band you like from the 90s (and even the ones you don’t). In particular, Nirvana and Weezer have cited the band as their primary influences, with Kurt Cobain even admitting Smells Like Teen Spirit was his attempt at writing a Pixies song… and Undone - The Sweater Song pretty much just being I Bleed off this album. So, it’s a shame Pixies generally aren’t widely as known as the bands they influenced - though admittedly their raw production and surreal lyrics may be a hurdle for some people. Like, what does any of it mean? Slicing up eyeballs, monkeys in heaven, whores in my head, hips like Cinderella? Idk man it’s Pixies, and it’s badass. For anyone new to the band, this is the place to start. While I think an argument can be made for either Doolittle or Surfer Rosa as their best album, this one admittedly has a bit higher of production quality and pop structure to it (though yeah the Fight Club song is on the other one). A lot of their best and most iconic songs are here as well, including Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and Gouge Away, though I’ve always found the more pop-oriented tracks Here Comes Your Man and Hey to be a little overrated. Still enjoyable though, as is everything else here. My only complaint is that they made the song No. 13 Baby the 11th track for some reason. Otherwise, near-perfect album. Great band to see live too - If you ever get a chance to see them (especially in a smaller venue), do it. They sound great, still have tons of energy, and since they’re not really a band with radio hits, you get a little bit of everything. One of my all-time favorite concert memories is jumping up and down to Debaser along with the pit around me, shouting the “Hey!”s and throwing our firsts up in unison. Anyway, to wrap up - important band and album for any alt rock fans out there. You really can’t go wrong with anything they put out pre-initial breakup.
One of my favourite albums, I listen to it every few years. I don’t recall there being a single bad song on this record. I remember hearing Debaser on the campus radio station in my first year of university and thinking it was the catchiest riff ever. Immediately checked out the rest of the album, and was hooked. I remember checking out their other albums at the time but nothing hooked me quite as much as this one. This album is foundational alternative rock - set the stage for so much that came after it. Standout tracks: Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed, This Monkey’s Gone To Heaven, Mr. Grieves, There Goes My Gun 4.5/5
It feels like all 90s rock kinda evolved from the music by Pixies
Just gotta be honest. Never listened to the Pixies all the way through. It's hard to imagine that this was released in 1989. For me, this is a timeless sound. Good lord. There Goes My Gun! An internal parody of their most well-known track on the same album!
Love this album.
I was wondering if the Pixies would ever show up on here.
A staple of my late teens. Pixies make music that both rocks *and* is weird. It’s viscerally and cerebrally interesting. I don’t love them as much as I did then, but I do love them. This album has the hits - Monkey, Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Gouge Away - and also Hey, which is such a bizarrely lovely song. Oh it’s a great album.
Bands as diverse as Drive Like Jehu and Weezer wouldn't be the same without this album. And Nirvana wouldn't either. It all sounds very simple, but it isn't. The rhythms don't stick to the normal multiples of 4 all the time. A lot of dissonance. The guitar and bass patterns are sometimes intentionally out of sync. The singer is not that great, but he's perfect for the music. Favorite song: Wave of mutilation.
That’s hour he’ll of an Album
Fucking great!
My favourite of the Pixies, hands down. Listened to it again and again, and just for the list's sake, have it playing again, But Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, La La Love You, Hey, and all the songs I didn't mention. 5 stars for me.
An absolute classic. Debased is one of my favorite album openers of all time. The sheer energy sets the tone for the rest of the album. The iconic bass line in Here Comes Your Man also deserves mention.
Fav songs: - Tame - No 13 Baby
One of best albums ever
This album, to me, resonates cool. Some punk (with more polish than hardcore stuff from the same era and early punk), some blues, some folky/country stuff, some foundation for the 90's alt rock titans. I suppose the feelings I have listening to this album contextualize some of the choices for this book -- you don't realize how much nostalgia you can have for a time before you were even born until you *really* hear it and recognize how much of the sounds you grew up were drawn from this. Of course I'd heard the popular songs off this album dozens of times - Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Hey, Monkey Gone to Heaven. I'm sure that many of those times were before I knew the prestige of this album or who I was even listening to...but they still made an impression on me as the type of music I (still) enjoyed these songs, and also found myself re-listening to hear even some of the harder to like/less pop-y songs like Crackity Jones. 4 leaning 5 for me.
Very interesting album! A bit crazy and noisy at times, but some amazingly catchy indie bangers in here. Never really listened to Pixies before but it seems they had massive influence on some huge bands that came after them. And I will say it doesn't sound like an 80s album at all. There is that real 90s alternative sound to the album that got reflected in a lot of later bands. I can always appreciate a trailblazer. Regardless though, really decent album, and while not every song on here appealed to me completely, it was still brilliant. Favourite: Monkey Gone to Heaven
Already a favourite
One of the best albums I've heard in my whole godforsaken life.
Perfect from start to finish.
Lost count of the times I thought "that bit sounds like [a band I love]", unbelievably influential. Les Savy Fav in particular are a couple of steps away from being a Pixies cover band. Great album on its own merits though and definitely has a sound of its own. Only knew the hits before this, will listen to more Pixies.
I missed the pixies growing up. Actually listened to this album for the first time last year and it's great! Would've loved it as a teenager. Full of great tracks but my favourites are debaser, here comes your man, monkey gone to heaven and crackity Jones
I really liked this album had a lot of really good songs and was only like 4p minutes long
revolutionary— best song here comes your man
For something coming out of the 80s, this is such a breath of fresh air. This is a band that I was aware of but was not familiar with their music. You can hear the influence they must have had on future bands in every song. Loved every moment. Cannot wait to hear more of their stuff now…
Still on my playlist today. Timeless.
Great
I think I really like the pixies, I really digged this album
This was my introduction to The Pixies, way back in the day. It was my cool Aunt and Uncle that got me into groups like The Pixies and The Smiths, and The Clash. The album will forever be a favourite of mine. So many great Pixies songs on this album.
Amazing album. Although Pixies is a quite famous/influential band, I hadn't paid much attention to them until now, but this album was right up my alley. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" was a highlight.
Here comes your man
Hey! I have heard this record so many times I cannot hear it new again. These are now the songs a grandma brought back from the shore. But the Pixies hit me at an impressionable time. I can remember seeing the video for Here Comes Your Man on MTV at 15. Not too long after that I had both Surfer Rosa and Doolittle. Bossonova would come a little later to grow on me. I remember hearing that they might break up and being shook when it happened after Trompe le Monde despite thinking that album was already weak by comparison. I moved on pretty quickly what with it being my teenage years but those first few records stayed in rotation and really never fell out of it. From Debaser to Gouge Away you'll get no complaints. Rock me, Joe.
Classic jams
One of the Great alternative rock masterpieces. So influential on the 90’s bands that would follow Nirvana and Radiohead to name a few. Not only that it’s just such a great listen and mix of music.
This is good stuff, I really liked the entirety of the album. Stand outs: I Bleed, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, `no 13 Baby, Hey
TAAAAAAAAAAMMMEEEEE
Loved it
I had only heard Where is my Mind before now but I knew that Pixies are said to have inspired many alt rock bands of the 90's and 00's and I can tell why after this. I think this would have blown my mind were I alive in 1989, but it's fun to retrospectively hear shades of different bands I like throughout this album.
Iconic album. Doesn't put a foot wrong
Klassiker
Brilliant, both for its influence and in its own right. I recognised more songs than I expected, and really enjoyed the ones I hadn't heard before.
Just a really solid and unique album
What an album!
One of my favourite albums from a favourite band
Classic.
I can hear the roots of all of my favorite music in this and the other Pixies releases. This is an amazing missing link to find in my music appreciation history.
Zalige plaat.
A great record, includes some of the the Pixies best and most fun songs. A good amount of Kim Deal as well: I'm a big Breeders man and it's notable how much better their comeback has been than the Pixies' recent stuff. Anyway, a 5 rating with lots of best song candidates but Debaser nudges it as a song that reminds me of jumping about at the Krazy (with a 'K') House in Liverpool as a studie.
My notes got deleted :( One of my favorites - really like debaser, hey, monkey gone to heaven. Enjoy it even when he’s basically just growling (taaaaaaame!)
Pixies + Dolittle = 5 Stars. Best Tracks: Debaser; Tame; Monkey Gone To Heaven
Fantastic album. One of the Pixies' best. A proto-grunge band who were very influential for Nirvana, and who are arguably more distinct than Nirvana in terms of their own sound.
slayest album ever. saved my life. love
I have already listened to this album one billion times...
issa classic
Badass
No e da masse bra her altså
Listened thru a couple times back to back
great album. very unique sound with lots of bangers
pelado buena onda
Damn this album is so good
Fun album from start to finish. Had a blast listening to it and plan on revisiting these Pixies fellas many more times in the future.
This checks a lot of boxes for me. Rock but with some tonal variety throughout, hits spaced apart, decent non-hits that give the album room to breathe, sweet-spot track and album lengths, nostalgia. Favorite: Debaser
Todd malone likey
sexy album
Favorite tracks: Debaser, Hey, Wave of Mutilation (B-side version), Mr. Grieves
Fantastic!
Top 10 of all time for me. Everything about this album is perfect. I still get the chills at their interplay in No 13 Baby
Dam nice
Some absolute bangers, great album. My only negative comment is I wish it was longer.
One of my favorites from the 80s. One of my favorite songs Monkey Gone to Heaven.
Classic
One of my all-time favorite albums and band. The "Psychotic Beatles" (as David Bowie stated) have had and continue to have a massive influence on many "indie" bands. If you like this, I recommend Surfer Rosa next.
Always happy to see the Pixies show up, and wasn't expecting a 3rd album on this list so this was a very pleasant surprise. Compared to Surfer Rosa and Bossanova this is definitely a much more "accessible" album as the wiki states, and it's solid bangers front to back. Great guitar hooks, Here Comes Your Man has such an instantly recognizable riff that you can't help but get down to. Found myself recognizing a lot more songs than I expected as well, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and Hey. Added a lot to the playlist off this listen, and would absolutely buy this album if I saw it out in the wild.
A really foundational album. It’s everything I love about grunge especially the way it doesn’t take itself too seriously. You can totally hear their influence on much later bands like grouplove. It’s very easy to listen to & fun all the while
yes. fun and fruity
Perfect album. I remember buying this in Golden Discs and listening to this on repeat on repeat on repeat.
I love the dirty, grungy sound of this album. Love the album, saw the concert, bought the teeshirt. I'm all in
Wonderful album from start to finish.
Just an amazingly good album. I only have 3 Pixies albums which just does not seem right because I still love all three. Surfer Rosa does seem to get the greater share of my listening time among the three, but this listen reminded me that Doolittle deserves much more of my attention than it's been getting. I think it is the stronger album over all. The production gives Kim Deal's bass the space it deserves moreso than on Surfer Rosa. A word about Kim who I think is The Pixies MVP. I absolutely love the tone of her bass and her playing is so clean and distinctive and underpins the Pixies sound perfectly. I've never really heard another bass player like her and Doolittle hilights this beautifully. Side one is nearly perfect and has the hits. Side 2 has the lesser known songs and may not get the love it deserves but by ending with Gouge Away it peaks at the end. An easy 5 star pick for me.
Dope
A masterpiece. One of the albums that definitely changed my view on rock music. Definitely one of my top 10 albums of all time. If you don't like (or at least appreciate) this album, we probably don't share music tastes. 10/10
this is probably my favorite Pixies album nearly every song goes super hard one way or another, overall - 10/10
Not much to say, just a legendary record
Fantastic album, just hit after hit. Perfection.
Miten mä en oo kuunnellut tätä kokonaisuutena aikaisemmin! Ihan vitun tight! Superkova wtf?! Sika hyvää ja nyanssirikasta kaahailuu 5/5
My favorite Pixies album.
Five stars!!! Oof both evocative of a previous life and still fucking good all these years later.
Seems like reluctant heroes to me. Goofy band that doesn't take themselves too seriously but it feels like they have something important to say. A lot of times the person who wants the job the most is least qualified, and the one who wants it least would be the best fit. The sarcastic class clown who actually makes a lot of rational sense when you listen and would have made a better class president than the overachiever or QB. That's the feeling I get about this album and The Pixies overall.
Eu acredito que esse seja o meu álbum favorito de todos os tempos.
I had a group of friends in college who were really into Pixies. But at the time they never appealed to me. So I had an immediate negative reaction when I first saw this come up. Then I recalled that earlier in this project I fell in love with a Frank Black album. Maybe this won’t be so bad? I’m pleased to discover that I loved this album! The grungy/punky/surfy sound and dark themed surreal lyrics were very interesting to me. I saw it all more as paint brush strokes more than coherent stories I clearly understood. But I really like the songs painted on this album. Sometimes the cool kids are right! I have heard “Here Comes Your Man” before and really like this song. Other standouts: “Wave of Mutilation” and its crazy underwater references, “Monkey Gone To Heaven,” “Crackity Jones,” “La La Love You” (nice wolf whistle!), “No. 13 Baby,” “Hey,” and “Gouge Away.” I really enjoyed listening to this!
Debaser has me smiling this morning. This is a terrific thrash around punk album with great breakbeats, song structure, and a killer sense of song and album dynamics. Gouge Away leaves a yearning feeling in its wake.
Doolittle is one of high water mark albums of Alternative music to have come out of the US in my lifetime. None of the songs outstay their welcome. a stoned classic
Hi-Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Crackity Jones Lo-Mr. Grieves Probably regarded as The Pixies most famous album (this reviewer prefers Trompe le Monde), it's wall-to-wall short and sweet bangers, packed to the gills with Frank Black and Kim Deal coolness, there really isn't a bad track in the bunch, maybe some that just aren't as good as others (Mr. Grieves), but nothing offensive and they're all short that by the time you might think of skipping a track, it's already over, with the longest cut clocking in just shy of 4 minutes. Unfortunately, that means the party is over all too quickly!
Awesome album. 1989, their 2nd album. Here comes your man. Punk/grunge kind of sound.
strong album.
I once fucked a pixie in the nostril. It died instantly.
Classic album- loved listening to this again. Great memories of my Uni days. Debaser gives me goosebumps
Una maravilla! Ahora entiendo como es que inspiro a tantas bandas
Heard this for the first time 15 years ago. Loved it then, love it now. Can understand why it’s an acquired taste though so 2s & 3s won’t surprise me.
So good. 9/10. Never listened to it all the way through before. Frantic, schizophrenic love songs. Unreal, loved it.
Superb from start to finish.
One of the most influential collection of songs ever. It all slaps
It's a classic and every track is a standout quite frankly
Never knew this album came out in the 80s. Love it.
Un dels millors discos de rock alternatiu... de la història? I això que personalment sempre li tindré més carinyo a 'Bossanova', amb qui els vaig conèixer... però el llistat de singles imbatibles d'aquest és tan difícilment superable....
One of my favorites of all time!
Best Pixies album. Timeless... Required listening. That is all.
Know it well. Fantastic tunes
DIS CA ZO!! 10/10 ludomatics
It’s a collection of really brief songs that are also fully formed pieces. So you get one song that does a thing, then the next song will do something else.
Absolute genius!!
oh please. 5 stars.
yes
Marginally prefer this album to Surfer Rosa and I think it has a slightly stronger legacy probably because there are more recognisable songs like Debaser, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, etc. 9/10
Stone cold classic
So many bangers. A game changer for me in formative years. Shout out to Conrad Roots for making me listen
One of my all time favourites
Best
I already liked this album. The Pixies are such a unique band IMO and in this album they show that's possible to showcase a variety of musical talents and styles and still put out a cohesive album.
5 estrellas totales.
One of my favorite alternative albums. Every song has a purpose, terrific pacing and just weird enough to separate it from the crowd
Kjærkomment gjenhør!
One of my favorite albums! "Debaser", "Here comes your man", "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Gouge away" are classics, and most of the other tracks are bloody good too (except maybe "Tame")
It's hard to be objective about an album whose cassette I owned and whose songs belonged on a third of all my mixed tapes. Perfect road trip album
YES
Great album even though it loses a little steam towards the end. Would be a 4.5/5 if it had the UK Surf version of Wave of Mutilation instead.
Solid fun. Was listening while I was painting and it was good background music. I like the instrumentation of it all and it felt oddly modern yet older. That's the late 80s for ya I guess. My favorite song off of this album is Mr. Grieves
This is a great album with a very unique sound. One of those rare albums that stands out because it sounds so different. I respect that and really leaned into the vibe.
Great sound, great vibe. I want to say this sounds like a punk / grunge mash up but that's not entirely right. In particular since this is 1989 and the Pixies are a Boston band, not sure grunge was a thing there yet. Regardless, I dig the album quite a bit.
Sehr rockig. Leicht punkig in einigen Songs. Kann man sich gut geben.
Obviously, one of the great records of the 80s. The songs I love I really love; the rest are just really good.
Crazy this band from Boston, Mass would be a big influence on the most influencial grunge band across the country. Sometimes albums are classic for a reason
