Reviews (page 6 of 14)

A really foundational album. It’s everything I love about grunge especially the way it doesn’t take itself too seriously. You can totally hear their influence on much later bands like grouplove. It’s very easy to listen to & fun all the while

yes. fun and fruity

Perfect album. I remember buying this in Golden Discs and listening to this on repeat on repeat on repeat.

I love the dirty, grungy sound of this album. Love the album, saw the concert, bought the teeshirt. I'm all in

Wonderful album from start to finish.

Just an amazingly good album. I only have 3 Pixies albums which just does not seem right because I still love all three. Surfer Rosa does seem to get the greater share of my listening time among the three, but this listen reminded me that Doolittle deserves much more of my attention than it's been getting. I think it is the stronger album over all. The production gives Kim Deal's bass the space it deserves moreso than on Surfer Rosa. A word about Kim who I think is The Pixies MVP. I absolutely love the tone of her bass and her playing is so clean and distinctive and underpins the Pixies sound perfectly. I've never really heard another bass player like her and Doolittle hilights this beautifully. Side one is nearly perfect and has the hits. Side 2 has the lesser known songs and may not get the love it deserves but by ending with Gouge Away it peaks at the end. An easy 5 star pick for me.

A masterpiece. One of the albums that definitely changed my view on rock music. Definitely one of my top 10 albums of all time. If you don't like (or at least appreciate) this album, we probably don't share music tastes. 10/10

this is probably my favorite Pixies album nearly every song goes super hard one way or another, overall - 10/10

Not much to say, just a legendary record

Fantastic album, just hit after hit. Perfection.

Miten mä en oo kuunnellut tätä kokonaisuutena aikaisemmin! Ihan vitun tight! Superkova wtf?! Sika hyvää ja nyanssirikasta kaahailuu 5/5

My favorite Pixies album.

Five stars!!! Oof both evocative of a previous life and still fucking good all these years later.

Seems like reluctant heroes to me. Goofy band that doesn't take themselves too seriously but it feels like they have something important to say. A lot of times the person who wants the job the most is least qualified, and the one who wants it least would be the best fit. The sarcastic class clown who actually makes a lot of rational sense when you listen and would have made a better class president than the overachiever or QB. That's the feeling I get about this album and The Pixies overall.

Eu acredito que esse seja o meu álbum favorito de todos os tempos.

I had a group of friends in college who were really into Pixies. But at the time they never appealed to me. So I had an immediate negative reaction when I first saw this come up. Then I recalled that earlier in this project I fell in love with a Frank Black album. Maybe this won’t be so bad? I’m pleased to discover that I loved this album! The grungy/punky/surfy sound and dark themed surreal lyrics were very interesting to me. I saw it all more as paint brush strokes more than coherent stories I clearly understood. But I really like the songs painted on this album. Sometimes the cool kids are right! I have heard “Here Comes Your Man” before and really like this song. Other standouts: “Wave of Mutilation” and its crazy underwater references, “Monkey Gone To Heaven,” “Crackity Jones,” “La La Love You” (nice wolf whistle!), “No. 13 Baby,” “Hey,” and “Gouge Away.” I really enjoyed listening to this!

Debaser has me smiling this morning. This is a terrific thrash around punk album with great breakbeats, song structure, and a killer sense of song and album dynamics. Gouge Away leaves a yearning feeling in its wake.

Doolittle is one of high water mark albums of Alternative music to have come out of the US in my lifetime. None of the songs outstay their welcome. a stoned classic

Hi-Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Crackity Jones Lo-Mr. Grieves Probably regarded as The Pixies most famous album (this reviewer prefers Trompe le Monde), it's wall-to-wall short and sweet bangers, packed to the gills with Frank Black and Kim Deal coolness, there really isn't a bad track in the bunch, maybe some that just aren't as good as others (Mr. Grieves), but nothing offensive and they're all short that by the time you might think of skipping a track, it's already over, with the longest cut clocking in just shy of 4 minutes. Unfortunately, that means the party is over all too quickly!

Awesome album. 1989, their 2nd album. Here comes your man. Punk/grunge kind of sound.

strong album.

I once fucked a pixie in the nostril. It died instantly.

Classic album- loved listening to this again. Great memories of my Uni days. Debaser gives me goosebumps

Una maravilla! Ahora entiendo como es que inspiro a tantas bandas

Heard this for the first time 15 years ago. Loved it then, love it now. Can understand why it’s an acquired taste though so 2s & 3s won’t surprise me.

So good. 9/10. Never listened to it all the way through before. Frantic, schizophrenic love songs. Unreal, loved it.

Superb from start to finish.

One of the most influential collection of songs ever. It all slaps

It's a classic and every track is a standout quite frankly

Never knew this album came out in the 80s. Love it.

Un dels millors discos de rock alternatiu... de la història? I això que personalment sempre li tindré més carinyo a 'Bossanova', amb qui els vaig conèixer... però el llistat de singles imbatibles d'aquest és tan difícilment superable....

One of my favorites of all time!

Best Pixies album. Timeless... Required listening. That is all.

Know it well. Fantastic tunes

DIS CA ZO!! 10/10 ludomatics

It’s a collection of really brief songs that are also fully formed pieces. So you get one song that does a thing, then the next song will do something else.

Absolute genius!!

oh please. 5 stars.

Marginally prefer this album to Surfer Rosa and I think it has a slightly stronger legacy probably because there are more recognisable songs like Debaser, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, etc. 9/10

Stone cold classic

So many bangers. A game changer for me in formative years. Shout out to Conrad Roots for making me listen

One of my all time favourites

I already liked this album. The Pixies are such a unique band IMO and in this album they show that's possible to showcase a variety of musical talents and styles and still put out a cohesive album.

5 estrellas totales.

One of my favorite alternative albums. Every song has a purpose, terrific pacing and just weird enough to separate it from the crowd

Kjærkomment gjenhør!

One of my favorite albums! "Debaser", "Here comes your man", "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Gouge away" are classics, and most of the other tracks are bloody good too (except maybe "Tame")

It's hard to be objective about an album whose cassette I owned and whose songs belonged on a third of all my mixed tapes. Perfect road trip album

Hugely influential and, for it's time at least, underrated album. Favorite track: Here Comes Your Man

A really good album. I liked it a lot. Some of the songs are a bit strange... but the good ones are really good, and once you get used to the sound... then you see.

I actually really like this album. The songs have some good hooks, they're a bit weird without getting too unlistenable, the loud/quiet dynamic catches your attention. It's pretty easy to see why Kurt Cobain and others liked this band so much.

This is a VERY fun album. Love the grunginess/punkiness to it. Just the right amount of distortion too Highlight: Here Comes Your Man, Gouge Away

Despite so many years of being a rock girlie, all I know about Pixies is "Where is My Mind." Sooooo... this is a solid way to kick off this album listening project. (And hey, TIL they're from Boston. Also Black Francis graduated from Westport High and won a "Teenager of the Year" award? lol) So I'm coming in extremely blind, only knowing the name and the influence. This is not what I expected them to sound like. I think I expected something heavier. But I was really happily surprised by all the genre bending -- surf pop, punk, and oh wait is that reggae/ska? I don't know how often I'll return to it, but I'm hearing how foundational they are to the 90s alternative scene and a lot of other bands I've loved. Some Related TBLs: - Nirvana - Nevermind (finally? because they cite this as an influence and I have never listened to it. I was just a little too young for the grunge movement.) - The Breeders - Last Splash (bassist Kim Deal's follow up all female alt band. I do love it when the girls make rock music) Standout Tracks + First Impressions: - Debaser - the sound grabbed me out the of the gate - Wave of Mutilation - the jauntiest surf bop about overworked Japanese businessmen dying by suicide, geez. - Here Comes Your Man - oh, this is a fun vibe. I won't look up the lyrics to find out if it's super dark yet ha. I like the vocal interplay between the two lead singers. - La La Love You - mostly instrumental, groovy vibe, nice bass line and guitar noodling, and maybe even a touch of new wave? - Silver - is just a little bit weird and feels like a spaghetti western? I'm into it.

Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album A little familiar How do I feel about this artist? Pretty neutral Pre-Listen Thoughts: This is another one of many bands where I know/enjoy the few songs the radio plays, but I have never actually listened. I could come out a huge fan or stay neutral. I predict 4 stars. Favorite track(s): I Bleed Post-Listen Thoughts: I liked it, I think I know some of their later stuff more but this was good.

It’s like … good. I wouldn’t say great. I love the bass tone a lot. Some of the guitar can be annoying, but undoubtedly creative and influential.

Un des meilleurs à date.

"Debaser" is, to me, the quintessential Pixies song. This album is great.

New to you?: New - never heard of the band or album! Fave tracks: Here comes your man, Crackity Jones Notes: Felt like a mix of Jeff Buckley, The Beatles, and then some rocky bits and bobs (names escape me it seems...!) Great first venture into the world of the pixies. Would you listen again?: Yes Rating: 7/10

Great album. Some of their best songs on here, and just overall a great listening experience.

friyeeeey!!! ✨

The Pixies were extremely influential, and definitely deserve inclusion on this list. I think this might be my favorite album by the group as it includes the most songs that I knew previously and really like ("Hey", "Wave of Mutilation", "Here Comes Your Man", "Monkey Gone to Heaven", "Mr. Grieves", "Gouge Away").

I have this, but not played for ages, saw them live in 1980s with Kim Deal, awesome, Monkey gone to heaven stand out track

Justifiably considered one of the great albums of the alternative rock scene rising from the ashes of the post-punk world in the late 80's, this is a phenomenal record that really stretches the band and the listener.

Every time I listen to this album I'm thinking "Why don't I listen to this more often?", then I get to the second half of the album and I just don't care for it.

Not bad

Me gustó, lo quiero volver a escuchar con auriculares, tal vez más atento incluso... la voz tan gritada es algo que no me convence tanto pero es un sólido 4/5

The cover is a bit weird but in a very interesting way. I've only heard one song by them which is Is She Weird. My first thought is that the lyrics of Debaser and Tame remind me of Nirvana lyrics, the way the vocalist sings also reminds me of Kurt Cobain's chaotic way of singing. Not much to say about Wave of Mutilation but I really liked the lyrics. I really like the mix of the feminine voice with the masculine voice in I Bleed. Here Comes Your Man reminded me of There's a Light that never goes out by The Smiths I'm not sure why Interesting production in Dead, I like the way his voice sounds, I don't know how to explain, it's like it's from an old muffled audio. I love the guitar in Monkey Gone To Heaven and again his vocals remind me of Kurt Cobain's especially in the album Bleach. Mr Grieves is fun, reminds me of dancing alone in my room with headphones on. I like the production change in the chorus and at the end Not sure what my opinion on Crackity Jones is on a first listen but it's definitely an interesting sound. I think La La Love You might be my favorite on first listen. I love the production and the mellow (? Not sure if it's the right word) vocals. Reminds me of The Cure's Kiss Me. No 13 Baby it's the moment I realized how much they use Spanish words in their songs not sure why it didn't stand out to me before, maybe one of them has Spanish as their first language? Or maybe it's a artistic choice, anyway I like the song and especially the production. There Goes My Gun is like a mix of Nirvana and Mother Mother to me I don't know how to explain, I like the production and again there's a feminine voice which makes the song more funky (?) And I really like that. Hey is a bit tense in the beginning/end and groovy at the "We are chained" bit. I like the guitar/bass (not sure). Silver reminds me of Cowboy movies, like I can picture the beginning of those old Wild West movies with this song playing in the background. Gouge Away again reminds me of Nirvana, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe Nirvana was inspired by them or maybe just this album? Not sure but I like it. Theres a tension to the production which it's like they are building up to the chorus, very nice!

groundbreaking, incredibly influential album. more or less made the foundation for the entire grunge genre. 4/5.

So easy to see why Pixies are one of the most influential bands in all of rock. A brilliant punchy and concise album

Bellissimo album, io credo che però sia un album da metabolizzare

8/10 Love me some Pixies.

Solid album, just not quite 5 star material

Bardzo bardzo fajne. Na 4

The Pixies were not really on my radar during their heyday so this was a welcome surprise. I picked up Surfer Rosa a year ago on a whim and while I liked a few songs it wasn’t enough for me to explore them further. Had I listened to this first, I would have probably had a different reaction to the band. This was great! Not all of it worked for me and Frank Blacks vocals wore on me a little bit but wow this record had energy. I can absolutely see how it influenced many musicians. Will definitely add this to my collection. 4 stars

Very enjoyable. Vocals were a bit gruff but worked well with the music. I’d come back for most of this record. 4.5/5

Very nostalgic listen for me.

Stone cold classic! I was late to the party with the Pixies having my first experience being the epic final scene in Fight Club. Make of that what you will, but it triggered a dive into their music that I otherwise might have never had. These guys are responsible for so much of the music I was already listening to and their influence continues to barrel on to this day.

I liked this one

highlights: debaser wave of mutilation here comes your man monkey gone to heaven

A great album that brings back fond memories, and still holds up remarkably well today as a pioneering noise rock record. I wasn't that much into it back in the days, but revisiting it decades later, I can now fully appreciate what a killer album it is. It sounds so modern it's hard to imagine this was created in 1989. Punk and garage vibes with a touch of melancholy, noisy experimentations and pop songs subverted by demented screams are right up my alley. The album is also impressively consistent : there isn't a single weak song despite a very diverse tracklist, and its unique musical identity remains obvious 35 years after its release. A tough call between a 4 and a 5. It's not truly among my cult albums, but I may still bump it up later just because it's so well-crafted. 8/10

Very nice. Went down a Pixies rabbit hole. How did I miss all this great punk music in the 80’s?

Not knowingly heard anything by them before. Was pleasantly impressed. If the vocals had been less punk-y, was almost a 5.

Doolittle is a really great album! I like it a lot! I do think it's a tad bit overrated, though. Its influence is undeniable - so many grunge artists would likely not exist if not for the Pixies paving the way for thim, and 'Doolittle' is probably my favorite of theirs I've heard, but I'm generally not a fan of pretty short albums which are primarily a bunch of shorter songs, and 'Doolittle' is kind of exactly that. Still, the best songs do elevate this to being excellent - 'Debaser' is an all-timer when it comes to album openers, the riff on 'Here Comes Your Man' is one of my all-time favorites, and 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' is one of the best rock songs of the 90s. In terms of the non-singles... 'Tame' is a super fun swerve into noise rock, 'No.13 Baby' has a great hook to it, 'Gouge Away' is pretty excellent, but the rest is just kind of really solid without standing out too much for me.

A really solid but uneven alternative rock album. Uneven because all the standout tracks come in the first half, ‘Debaser’, ‘Wave of Mutilation’, ‘Here Comes Your Man’ and ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’ being the pick of the bunch. By contrast, while there are no real duds, some tracks from the second half, while still good, didn’t do a lot for me (‘La La Love You’ and ‘Hey’ for two examples). With its ‘quite-loud’ dynamics and grungy guitars/vocals (perhaps most clearly demonstrated on ‘Tame’), the influence it had on the likes of Kurt Cobain is very apparent. Decent 4 stars.

Good album I’ve never listened to front to back!! I knew i’d like it, and I see why it’s such an influence for so many bands. It reminded me of weezer, even i know that relationship goes the other way around! Fav tracks: I bleed, Monkey gone to heaven, No 13 baby

Great alternative rock! The bass really sticks out on most of the songs. Favourites: Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Debaser and Wave of Mutilation

Another great Pixies album. I have to accept that they're just one of my favorite bands and need to listen to them more. 4/5

been waiting to listen to this album for years so i was glad this project finally got me off my ass and allowed me to hear the whole thing. honestly a really solid album, i like pixies tracks here and there so the whole album worked for me. good stuff

Exactly my kind of thing, would be 4.5 if possible.

There's a lot to like on here. Obvious influence for '90s grunge (specifically Nirvana). Less "noisy" than I expected.

I bought this record a fair while ago on a complete whim, and on being aware of the high regard that Pixies are held in. I think prior to today I'd played it once, where I thought it was OK but didn't feel overly compelled to revisit. I've been looking forward to re-evaluating my view, and on this listen it's clicked in a big way for me. Much prefer it to the other Pixies album I've had so far in Surfer Rosa – it's far more hook-centric, catchier, generally more optimistic in tone and a bit more pleasant on the ears vocally. Good stuff, it won't be joining the clear-out pile.

9/10 Fv song: No 13 Baby

It’s interesting bc I had heard here comes your man before and after the first 3 songs was like I don’t see how it fits the album but then listening to it again I could see it

Right up my alley, but all the songs are relatively uniform and not really attention grabbing. Already knew about Here Comes Your Man.

great, of course

First Pixies album and did like it.

A truly great, defining album.

Mijn favoriet is 'monkey gone to heaven'.

Banger of an album. Really cool to hear the inspiration behind a lot of alt rock classics.

I wish I could give this 4.5 stars. It's so good. Foundational record.

Great indie rock album, the kind that gets better the more you listen and engage with it

good album

Here comes your cacophony man

This is the one Pixies album that I had listened to front to back prior to making my way through the 1001 albums list. It’s a bit frontloaded in my opinion, but still a big step up from the debut.

I liked Bossanova more but it had good tracks

Don't know why I never listened to a full album of The Pixies before, but I thought this album was great. I really like the heavier grunge songs on the album.

pretty good album. Lots of good songs, a few clunkers but overall I really enjoyed it. Would listen to it again, not sure about buying. I'll listen to it again

This project has introduced me to this band which I’d heard of but never really listened to.

Never really listened to them before and I enjoyed this more than I thought. Really good combination/ balance of weird, quirky, dissonant noisey stuff with catchy songwriting and some good hooks. I can see how influential this must have been on all the 90’s alternative rock to come. Interesting varied dynamic lead vocals and I really like the sound with Kim Deal’s bgvs too.

Liked this a lot more than i thought i would. Fun listen. The last few songs were my favorite. Different vibes thoroughout but still cohesive

Always liked the Breeders and Frank Black yet never dug into the Pixies. Cool album, wish I heard that in my formative years.

This might be their finest record start to finish. Genuinely wonderful.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 I had big expectations for this one going into it—I knew at least "Debaser," "Wave of Mutilation," "Here Comes Your Man," and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" going in, though a couple more sounded familiar—but it did not disappoint. I knew it would be good, but I think there's a part of me that feels almost afraid of the Pixies because of their manic emotionality. "Wave of Mutilation" is one of several Pixies songs that makes me feel a little, no pun intended, debased emotionally—I feel, in the distance, a sort of trembling, confused crying that I'm afraid will come within infectious distance if I listen to more of their stuff. Like "Where is My Mind???" it's beautiful and also a little unpredictable and I think that's what sets me on edge. Fortunately, this was way more fun than it was challenging. Really consistent sound while still being creative, and it's that sound that basically defined the 90s and countless bands I love. I think the only reason this isn't a 5 is that it sort of peters out towards the end—though the songs are still fun, they're not as memorable to me. Will be listening again though. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

This was so crazy and fun!!! A little scary but I liked that feeling of being scared

Sounds like a blueprint for many alternative rock and grudge bands .....which blows my mind ......

Alt rock pioneers. Responsible for so much of the shit I like. It's on my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆(8/10) Total reviewed : 373 Already owned : 82 Purchased : 16 To buy : 7 Nope : 268

I liked it for the most part but his voice takes some getting used to

Monkey Gone to Heaven and Hey are the standouts for me. Influenced tons of shit I love. Black Francis' vocals aren't my favorite, which keeps Pixies out of my heavy rotation, but it's a great album.

really loved this album, exploring more of Pixies Album and music

This is a loud album that wastes no time throwing the listener straight into the chaos from the very first song. I love how the songs reject conventional structures while never feeling directionless. The Pixies were well ahead of their time, and you can clearly hear how countless artists would later run because they confidently walked first. There is something mesmerizing about the way these songs erupt. The compositions are fascinating. At times minimalistic, yet always layered enough to keep things varied and rewarding. The combination of rich bass lines, screeching guitars, eerie humming, and explosive vocals captures a rebellious spirit like few other albums can. It’s an outstanding record. My favorite songs were "Tame", "Monkey Gone to Heaven", and "Gouge Away".

surprisingly mid, but short. it is the pixies I would reach for.

never liked a full pixies album until this one. Interesting mix of sounds, sounds well ahead of its time. Struggling to choose between 4 & 5. High 4*

It would definitely be a five if Surfer Rosa didn't exist. It's almost perfect, just wall-to-wall bangers. But "La La Love You" and "Mr Grieves" just drag it down a bit. Not bad songs by any shot, but just a little too silly amongst the big hitters

Great album even though it loses a little steam towards the end. Would be a 4.5/5 if it had the UK Surf version of Wave of Mutilation instead.

Solid fun. Was listening while I was painting and it was good background music. I like the instrumentation of it all and it felt oddly modern yet older. That's the late 80s for ya I guess. My favorite song off of this album is Mr. Grieves

This is a great album with a very unique sound. One of those rare albums that stands out because it sounds so different. I respect that and really leaned into the vibe.

Great sound, great vibe. I want to say this sounds like a punk / grunge mash up but that's not entirely right. In particular since this is 1989 and the Pixies are a Boston band, not sure grunge was a thing there yet. Regardless, I dig the album quite a bit.

Punkish with enough heart to charm me. I particularly liked here comes your man and la la love you.

Det var ret godt!

Sehr rockig. Leicht punkig in einigen Songs. Kann man sich gut geben.

Obviously, one of the great records of the 80s. The songs I love I really love; the rest are just really good.

Crazy this band from Boston, Mass would be a big influence on the most influencial grunge band across the country. Sometimes albums are classic for a reason

Makes me feel like a teenager

V good

On one hand, most of this album isn't that good. On the other, Here Comes Your Man is a banger.

There's a lot to get used to about this album. I didn't exactly get there yet. I have known Here Comes Your Man for a long time, so the rest of the songs were interesting to hear. I think they will grow on me. There is a lot to like and nothing that I dislike about the album

This brings me back. Perfect blend of Frank Black's anger with Kim Deal's childlike singing and melodies.

I didn't like this album the first time I listened to it, but I gave it a second chance here and I've come around on it. Lots of interesting songs like Debaser and Gouge Away sprinkled in with classics like Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven. I can see now why this put the Pixies on the map. It gets one star off from me though for the awful song that is Tame. It's literally just Frank screaming "tame" for a minute and I hesitate to even call it a song.

A good alt rock album that also defied 80's slop! 3.5

Should be on this list by all means. Some of the tracks I didn't like as well but this goes hard in other spots.

This was the exact type of album I started this list hoping to discover. Obviously I'd heard of The Pixies but I probably would have struggled to name more than a couple of songs. Now I'm starting to think they are alot of my favourite bands, favourite band. You can just hear the influence for so many 90s alt bands and beyond. Although the styles changed throughout the album, the one constant was the amazing bass guitar work. Phenomenal. Really enjoyed my listen though. 4*

Weird, wonderful, high energy and fun. What’s not to like?

An Indie classic

Phenomenal band. Brilliant record.

Another Pixies? This is better than Surfer Rosa

You can hear the Pixies echo in the music of so much that follows. Not always easy but brilliant.

I don't think I had ever listened to this album in full until this list gave it to me. I had only heard "Debaser," "Tame" and "Here Comes Your Man" at certain points over the past 8 or 9 years preceding this full listen, which is sort of ironic considering how much of my favourite music was influenced by this album. Needless to say, no one quite mastered the quiet LOUD quiet dynamic like Pixies did on Doolittle. The rickety, ramshackle sound of the album makes the 60s pop influence shine through like a ray of sun through a cloud of buzzing guitar clouds and clattering drums. The album somewhat loses steam past "Monkey Gone to Heaven" but there's enough solid material to last until the end, so it never really moves into less than good territory. There's also very little time wasted on this thing: songs don't ever overstay their welcome, but it can sometimes mean they come and go without leaving much of an impression. Bonus points for the really aggressive ones that feature Frank Black's screams because those are the irreplicable kind of visceral, deep-from-the-stomach-pit type that most metal frontmen spend careers searching for. All in all this is a must-listen for anyone looking to understand alt rock and the development of the sound that ruled rock for the rest of its mainstream heyday. Key Tracks: Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, No 13 Baby, Gouge Away

Where Is My Mind' Playlist pick : Tame

I can hear the influences this album and the Pixies had on a ton of my favorite artists. I have never listened to the Pixies (shhhhh dont tell anyone, that makes me a bad music nerd I think) but I have listened to Frank Black earlier in this project. Really enjoyed and will be giving it a listen again. And again. And may bump this up to 5 stars who knows.

This album, besides being packed with their best known (and most generally palatable) hits, is really interesting for its inclusion of songs that are definitely written to be performed live with relatively little regard for how they come across in a booth. I’ve complained about that in some previous reviews, but I think it works here because they have the range, and it feels purposeful. I think it comes across as more deliberate because nothing ever feels like filler, it all fits the tone of the album.

A great album I hadn’t listened to in a while and glad I reconnected with

What gives it lasting power is that it never sounds respectable. Even polished, it is still twitchy, perverse, and slightly unwell. The biblical imagery, surrealism, death, sex, environmental dread, and black humor all feel crammed into tiny songs that move too fast to fully explain themselves.

Det her er simpelthen bare et totalt fedt album. Vi er ikke i 5'er-enden, men det holder hele vejen igennem!

det er lige mig det her. Super fedt hele vejen igennem.

Pretty good

GOT ME A MOVIE I WANT YOU TO KNOW SLICING UP EYEBALLS I WANT YOU TO KNOW GIRL YOURE SO GROOVY I WANT YOU TO KNOW DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I AM UN CHIEN ANDALUSIA A very funny and playful rock and roll classic, one of my favorite albums of all time 10/10s Debaser Wave of Mutilation Here comes your man Mr. Grieves Hey Gouge Away

4.19/5 favorite pixies album mayb their best

You know that feeling when you get into a car crash? This is that album, in the best way possible. You got from the peace of driving (the quiet verses) to the absolute explosion that is their signature almost deafening choruses. You have the whiplash of genres throughout the whole album, most apparent in back to back surfer rock Here Comes Your Man to the beautifully textured noise rock of Dead. The only way it differs from a car crash is the end result, because god do I feel alive after this album.

Debaser: The instrumentals are GREAT. Dancing in my room. The singing was a half sec to get used to cause it's not my usual genre, but overall a banger. Tame: all in from the first line. The bass? Eats. Wave of Mutilation: I don't have much to say except for the fact that I like it I Bleed: ooh, I really like the talk/sing -thing in this. Very cool effect. Even cooler effect that it switches 👀 Here Comes Your Man: OH? A groovy little banger for me? Dead: I... am in love with that guitar? Actually would love to have more of this in current music please?? Monkey Gone To Heaven: big fan of the vocals. As usual, guitar is eating up. Mr. Grieves: Okay??? Fun at the start for sure, aaand we're off. This is fun. I like this Crackity Jones: I actually think the people who made this song might have been ON crack when they made it La La Love you: butt is a-shaking. No 13 Baby: good song. I don't have much else to say about it. It's good. There Goes My Gun: well, then pick it up again. Hey: I'm just... idk, not a big fan of this one. Silver: I am in the Wild West. I am convinced of it. Gouge away: Decent Overall: good album. Very dad rock, and honestly my mum probably has the record somewhere. I liked most of it. Not exactly riveting lyricism, but I am a BIG fan of the instrumental half of it. Some songs are out of my general listening sphere, others fit better into it. I did like that not all of the songs were so similar that it just seemed to be one song with new lyrics all the time. The loud/quiet flips are cool, if a bit whiplash-y. Then again, I suppose that is what makes them cool in the first place. 8,4/10

nice album

Better than talking to animals

8/10 - Its weird in a way that grows on you. Had to turn my Spotify streaming quality up to appreciate it. Its passionate, its catchy, its weird. The only knock against it is I _do_ get a tad tired of listening to it by the end of the album Fav Tracks: Debaser, I Bleed, Monkey Gone to Heaven Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ✅ Album Cover -------Its the monkey!

Highlights: Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Hey, Here Comes Your Man. In a nutshell: "must be a devil between us..." What do early movie musicals and Doolittle have in common? Francis and characters in a musical sing every note with an emotion and with projection. You can hear this on Debaser; Francis spits out each syllable angrily. And he twists the pronunciation of some words throughout the album. Many lyrics are surreal to say the least, so don't go in expecting poetry. I couldn't stop gushing over Kim Deal in my notes. Fuss free and rhythmic, but impactful when it needs to be. I adored her bass work on Hey, Tame and I Bleed especially. If Doolittle is your first Pixies album, you're in luck. It's the most accessible of the three on here. Overall: 7/10

Enjoyed, especially first half

Had a lot of fun listening to this. Definitely need to check out more by the pixies

Straight to my playlist all the songs in this album is great . I like it

The first Pixies album I have genuinely enjoyed. Debaser, Wave of Mutilation and Gone to Heaven are all great.

The artists it inspired in the future is so clear, great album

I’ve always thought of Pixies as more of a greatest hits sorta band because sometimes when their songs aren’t great they’re horrible. A little of that is in evidence on this album but for the most part there are a lot of great tracks.

Fav- here comes your man 4/5

I got a bit distracted while listening, so I didn't really take great notes while listening. But this album does really seem like your favorite band's favorite band. It's really good alt rock, and the worst thing you can probably say about it is that it's ahead of its time in a genre that you might not care that much about. This kind of album doesn't usually get an instant replay from me after my first listen, but this one did. Favorite Song(s): Monkey Gone to Heaven

Debaser is an all timer for me. There’s a lot to love on this album, it’s messy and dissonant, but it’s also catchy and beautiful.

So rock and roll

I want to listen to this again a little more carefully, but I really liked what I heard. This is truly a 4.5, verging on a 5. I really enjoyed Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, La La Love You, and Monkey Gone to Heaven.

4.5, it’s a lot of fun

Hard not to be biased about this. It was huge for me and listened to it sooo much. For me the perfect mix of hooks and melody with visceral, raw energy and some quirkiness to boot. Loved. Hard to rate higher than some of the incredible recordings here but it’s a 4-5 for me personally.

fav songs: debaser wave of mutilation here comes your man monkey gone to heaven energetic, quirky, dynamic 70/100

Mistakenly posted my review on someone else’s page on this group but I will repost here. Is this pre-grunge grunge? It’s the kind of music I like, anyway. That bass and melodramatic lyrics performed as though under duress. Yes please. Here comes your man - a bit like REM in places, a bit like Stone Roses in others. I can hear the smiths, I can hear the fall, I can hear the velvet underground, I can hear Pulp, I can hear my beloved Hole. Is this happy sad??? La La Love You is amazing. Also great (insane) cover. I will be revisiting this.

So. I like every other song on the A side (the pop ones, i.e. Debaser, Wave Of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven) but can't really gel with the other ones. Chris Morris (The Day Today, Brasseye, Four Lions, The Day Shall Come) does a Pixies parody called 'Motherbanger', which nails why I don't like the other songs, as sometimes Black Francis just seems to be singing absolute nonsense, which works in a pop song because I love the production of all the other instruments, but the other songs come across as just a bit meaningless (to me). I had thought this before when I had first listened to it years ago and I wondered on this listen if it needed those songs to make the pop hits even better, and... Maybe. They're not filler but I don't know how fully needed they are. The B Side is good - more of a B side with not many hits for me, but overall makes up for the sum of its parts. No. 13 Baby and Hey were good, was falling asleep by Silver and some of Gouge Away. Regardless, when it hits high, God only knows how to write (and produce!) music as good as this.

Yeah this albums good

Always heard of the pixies but never listened until i realised i played some songs from the game RockBand. It is a throwback to the 90s

I remember getting in a fight with my ex back in college over this album. She said it was total shit, and I kept defending it as genius. It's in fact, both. But both of us I think missed the point entirely. The Pixies are what they are, an eclectic, bizarre, ironic except non-ironic band with dozens and dozens of influences. There's no way everything will work, and some styles will please you more over others featured in the album, but it's still a wild ride to this day. I love how we never know where the screaming/singing will change and what tempos/chords will intentionally get screwed up. It's masterful because it was entirely controlled in the studio, albeit to the band's eventual demise (this is where they started hating working with each other). You'd have to be a control freak to make this kind of music sound so tight and cohesive. It's no longer my favorite Pixies album (kind of iffy at certain points), but it was a game changer for me as I started to get into more alternative music. 4.5 stars.

Not really my thing, but I recognize the crazy influence, monster hit, and what can be heard as Baby Grunge.

Fun Fun Fun

I’m so alt I’m so cool

7.5/10

The start of “Wave of Mutilation” is one of those songs that lives rent free in my head whether I like it or not (it lives next door to “Sundown” by Gordon Lightfoot) I enjoyed the majority of this album. Jagged harmonies throughout. Hoping to see more of this genre in the future.

It is hard to call an album by the Pixies accessible, but there it is. I have enjoyed a few singles by the band, but I haven't really gotten into them in the past. Something happened during this listen through, however, and I am starting to reconsider. The music is varied and complex, often sounding garage-ish yet extremely well produced. The energy is solid, and I am intrigued by the lyrics when I can hear them (old age hearing, clarity, and focus). You win this round Pixies. You win.

For a lot of people this is probably a 5 but for me it’s more a 3.5, maybe a 4 in parts

The listener’s journey through Doolittle is a mix of high-energy "bangers" like the vocal powerhouse "Crackity Jones" and the upbeat "Mr. Grieves," contrasted with tracks like "Tame" and "I Bleed" that fail to land. While the catchy accessibility of "Here Comes Your Man" and the eerie, medieval atmosphere of "Silver" stand out, much of the record, including the cryptic "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and the unintelligible "Dead" feels jarring or incoherent. This lack of cohesion, paired with a stylistic range that echoes both the punk energy of Green Day and the grunge foundations of Nirvana, results in a 4/5 rating, suggesting the album is a product of its time that requires specific context to fully appreciate.

Great album, even the weaker songs on here are still good Has some absolute bangers littered through besides those weaker ones

Have always heard of this band but never really ever listened to their stuff. Enjoyed the ride. I can see why they were so influential

let em get jealous watching us

супер альбом прям очень ярко вписывается в мои вкусы. треки короткие S tier Hey; La la Love you; here comes your man; wave of mutilation

I vert much enjoyed this Pixies album. Lots of raw energy, some silliness, but lots of hooks to sink into!

Incredible baselines and edgy vocals/lyrics, sick guitar riffs and great backing drums. It was incredible album, but it did have that affect of all bleeding into each other as previous albums in this genre do.

Super original rock record — maybe slightly ahead of its time? Likely influenced a huge number of bands that would follow. 4.0/5.0

Good album, definitley ahead of its time. I honestly thought the pixies started in the mid 90s, I wasn’t too familiar with them. Cool to see they were pioneers of alt rock and grunge.

bangin, could be a 5

Muy buena mezcla y sonido del bajo durante todo el álbum

Ojämn platta men några fantastiska singlar drar upp betyget. En fyra

tetszik az, hogy mennyire nem veszik magukat komolyan, ettől kicsit komikussá válik, így még szórakoztatóbbá. ez nagyon jól áll nekik, és felszabadultá teszi a hallgatót is. a számok rövidek (15 min/38 perc) ettől kevésbé érezhető a monotonotás, mert mindig érkezik egy új téma. hát a here comes your man az a here comes your man. ott van ez a felszabadult jól lét, a játékosság, de valami elképesztő szívezorító kesergés. nekem az a szám mindig a határtalan szabadságról fog szólni, annak minden csodájával és fájdalmával együtt.

i love it

It's okay, has its moments but not my favourite Pixies album

I never gave this album the respect it deserves. I always said I only like that one Pixies song that goes HEY ("been trying to meet you"). It's so sexy. and I still don't like "Here comes your man" (is it a cover of a Buddy Holly song?) Today is my 40th birthday, so I guess my music tastes have just matured to include the Pixies moving forward! that's all right with me.

took a few tracks to get familiar with the music. really cool album, something different from what i usually listen to.

Great album, has some of the Pixies best songs. Thoroughly enjoyable.

(2.75)

some real classics on this one

A destacar: Track 1 - Debaser Track 2 - Tame Track 3 - Wave of Mutilation Track 5 - Here Comes Your Man Track 7 - Monkey Gone to Heaven Track 10 - La La Love You Track 11 - No. 13 Baby Track 13 - Hey

Pixies have a way of making noise and shouting somehow easy to listen to. somehow the amateurish song structures and abrasive vocals are suitable enough for at least a few of the songs to appear on the radio. This is also apparent on other albums like Surfa Rosa and Tromp Le Monde. Pretty much a perfect example of alternative rock

This was great, really enjoyed the Pixies. Here Comes Your Man has been stuck in my head since listening to this!

Favourite Songs: Debaser Wave Of Mutilation Dead

I spent a long time trying to convince myself that I liked the Pixies more than I actually do. I can't tell you how many times I listened to this album in my youth just to feel cool. Eventually, I came to my senses. The Pixies are low-key mid. This is their best work, though.

Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Debaser, and Monkey are fantastic. The rest are hit or miss for me. But it's still great.

Ubiquitous sound. Easy to spot the influence they’ve had on “alternative” music.

First of all, let me say that this is actually really good. It also feels like a gen X final boss album. You can hear traces of The Stone Roses or Sonic Youth, but you can also hear things that would later inspire My Bloody Valentine and the entire shoegaze genre. It's dark and effortlessly cool. Highly recommended.

I forgot how weird parts of this album are. Don't get me wrong it has some absolutely great music on here. There is a reason why Wave of Mutilation and Here Comes your Man are still played and show up in movies to set the time period. There are a couple of other songs I've always been surprised weren't hits. Either way the Pixies have to be related to Sonic Youth in spirt. Some of the tunes are weird and out there. Like they had fun making them and no one said maybe don't lead with Debaser. If you like to listen to experimental stuff then Debaser is for you, if your a fan of more straightforward stuff skip it. Overall it was fun to revel in nostalgia. I swear a quarter of the school had owned this or had a bootleg of it.

Really well balanced era defining rock.

debase her!? i hardly know her! pretty good though. it's all over the place stylistically and sonically, but i enjoyed it. "monkey gone to heaven", "crackity jones", "gouge away", and "i bleed" are some of favourites off this album. i had to listen to this one twice to get a good read on it but i think it benefited heavily from the second listen. it's a little funny how much this inspired kurt cobain with nirvana because you REALLY hear it. this struck a nice balance between sounding rough and aggressive but still having the clarity to carry its energy. not all of it hits for me but where it does, it definitely does.

Great album, need a lot of time to digest.

Debaser was such an awesome, powerful intro to this album! Pure, solid, punk fun. Tame was also so solid! I loved that it then slowed down for Wave of Mutilation. I Bleed had some different ideas, but I ended up really enjoying it. Here comes your man is such a great track. A pleasure to listen to it again. Monkey gone to heaven was an interesting time. Mr Grieves and Crackity jones were fun short little tracks. La la love you was decent. Hey was quite enjoyable as well. Silver had its moments as a mostly instrumental! Gouge away was an awesome closer! A great album. 3.5/5 ⭐️ 103/1089

i’ve heard this album plenty of times before. but i don’t know if ive ever really paid close attention to it. i remember being slightly disappointed by my pixies deep dive a while back. i think it was just surfer rosa not being as good as i remember. i have revisited this one a couple times more often since, i like it. monkey gone to heaven gets stuck in my head pretty often. it’s good. i can’t tell if it’s necessarily filler but i found myself just wading through most of the songs, waiting for the really good tracks most of the time. four seems too high, but three seems too low, so i did a four.

first five tracks are all time. the rest is also pretty good

SIX SEVEN. SIX SEVEN. SIX SEVEN. SIX SEVEN. SIX SEVEN. SIX SEVEN. SIX SEVEN. ----------- unfortunately a classic. 4.4-5. thanks skate 3. fuck you francis (unfortunately teenager of the year is a banger). this m- [REDACTED]'s going t- (nvm not finishing that one) (related but unrelated) if there's one thing i'll give butch vig credit for on nevermind {i give him credit for a lot actually. he's had to spend years being yelled at by just. the worst kinds of music guy™️.} he got to the dynamic heart of the loud quiet loud song structure. steve albini's too anal to have committed to that. rip him tho. (actually related) gouge away top 100 album closers of all time

Really good album with some amazing bangers. I really like Pixies and this will make them go back to my playlists.

un poco gritones pero hay algún que otro temazo

I love the Pixies!

gud sup probby like it more than rolling stones which was today right before

Me gusto mucho la canción de Hey

For an album that’s this listenable and acceptable in a public setting there is a surprising amount of rough and tumble. It gets intense and screamy with heightened occasionally violent lyrics without ever tipping into anything even vaguely anti-social. The focus on delivering a big melody with every song means that there are hooks that give the listener a route through the noise, but the abrasiveness then enhances everything around it, upping the excitement. An all time classic.

Gouge away +1

Like it a Lot!

Ahhh yes, monkey album

in my personal opinion this fucks hard 👍

Holy nineties indie. You can hear it all in here. Clearly influenced it’s next decade

banger!

I saw a lot of passionate fans in the comments for this album. I enjoyed La La Love You, No 13 Baby, There Goes My Gun, Hey, and Gouge Away the most of the album. The rest definitely has its charm and grime that I enjoyed to a certain degree, but I couldn't really fall in love with this album. Which is a shame because usually I love Pixies. The instrumentation is sick, and I'd enjoy listening to some of this album again. I just couldn't find enjoyment out of some of the tracks.

Such an influential album. It was a good listen. Album 32, March 30, 2024

Quite enjoyed this one. Better than the other Pixies album and a few more songs I recognised.

What a phenomenal piece. Didn't know punk alt rock punk could be this good, not how many influences this band had. It's not perfect, but boy is it groundbreaking.

Classic.

3.75. I dig this one more than Surfer Rosa.

All these years and I just learned that The Pixies are not the band I thought they were. I'm in my 40's and am still hearing songs for the first time and saying "Oh yea, Weird Al does a parody of this one." I also hear some songs that sound like heavily influenced Weezer. This album is nearly 40 years old and still sounds fresh and original.

4.25 - I should have listened to this a long time ago.

I was already familiar with Pixies, and I already knew the track Here Comes Your Man from this album. This is a pretty good album overall. Here Comes Your Man is probably the most pop-oriented track on the album, as it almost seems like a 60s throwback. The rest of the album is a bit darker, and very solid overall. I would listen again.

That’ll do

Orígenes del grunge Y a la vez otros estilos muy variados Un recorrido muy entretenido

This is an album that popularised quiet and calm verses with loud and energetic choruses. It's quite a noisy one at times though it is complimented heavily by pop-leaning hooks. One of the most obvious thing someone listens to a Pixies record or song is the charming frontman of the band Black Francis, who is a lot of the reason for the oddities very much present here, like the macabre lyrics, weird singing styles, and just general un-hingedness littered throughout this album. It's quite scattered with different styles, and some songs are so short which are closer to fragments but all in all it's still very rewarding to listen to. Highlight Song/s: "Debaser", "Wave Of Mutilation", "I Bleed" and "Here Comes Your Man"

C'est un style que j'aime, juste dommage que j'ai "perdu" mon temps a écouter les démos. 4*

Much harder than I expected. This album will stick with me.

7.5/10

Overall the album has good grooves, something I would jam out to for a Fourth of July party. The lyrics and subject matter are a little dark but worth a listen Top songs: Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gouge Away Worst songs: No 13 Baby

One of those albums that was a direct precursor to the alt rock movement explosion. It's a classic for a reason!

Some bangers! Great sound all around

unc music

This one has some of my favourites, but also some fillers.

The Pixies have never had the same impact on me as they have had on many other listeners. I am not entirely sure why; it isn’t the production or the vocals that miss the mark. While the music can be somewhat dissonant and abrasive at times, I enjoy other artists who utilize a similar style. The Pixies are certainly a fine band, and "Doolittle" is a fine album, but for me, neither feels essential. As for a rating, "Doolittle" just achieves four stars - it's not an album I reach for despite owning a copy for many years. 1 "Debaser" (4/5) 2 "Tame" (3/5) 3 "Wave of Mutilation" (3/5) 4 "I Bleed" (3/5) 5 "Here Comes Your Man" (4/5) 6 "Dead" (3/5) 7 "Monkey Gone to Heaven" (5/5) 8 "Mr. Grieves" (3/5) 9 "Crackity Jones" (3/5) 10 "La La Love You" (3/5) 11 "No. 13 Baby" (4/5) 12 "There Goes My Gun" (3/5) 13 "Hey" (4/5) 14 "Silver" (4/5) 15 "Gouge Away" (5/5) Total - 54 Average - 3.60 276/1001 148/276 albums reviewed were new to me

This grew on me the more I listened and Here Comes Your Man is an immensely fun track. High 3/low 4

Felt like I was immersed in another universe

cool album even if the only Pixies song i know is not on it

Nice, but not too memorable

Great fuckin album

Fifteen good tracks in 39 minutes, what’s not to like. Here Comes the Man is a great song and stands out but the rest of the album is far from filler

Frank Black’s vocals definitely take a bit of acclimatising — that yelp is an acquired taste — but once you settle into it, the personality becomes part of the charm. There are genuine classics scattered throughout: “Debaser” kicks the door in, “Wave of Mutilation” is effortless alt‑rock perfection, and “Here Comes Your Man” brings a jangle‑pop sweetness that balances the chaos elsewhere. Even the weirder cuts feel like they’re pushing the edges in interesting ways. Not every track is essential, but the highs are so influential and so fun that it’s easy to see why Doolittle is a cornerstone of alternative rock.

I listened to this album at the security desk as my coworker listened to political podcasts very loudly right next to me. Based solely on Where Is My Mind?, I had a very different expectation as to what kind of band the Pixies were. I had been envisioning a lighter and lower tempo sound, only for Doolittle to lean heavily into screaming punk aesthetics that absolutely floored me. The sound of the Pixies varies from one song to the next, hitting different facets of this gruff and fuzzy rock sound they're doing for, and while certain songs connect with me more, the entire album flows together like one chaotic mass of energy. Typically it is the choruses and hooks which pull me out of certain songs, as some of these moments don't quite hit the songwriting highs that I experienced across the rest of the album; however, everything around these moments is still more than enough to buoy the entire album and keep it afloat. Like a lot of punk rock, it suffers from the natural conclusion of complete creative freedom: some of your weird creative swings get really really weird to the point of being a little inaccessible. There is a looseness to all the songs here, moving back and forth between emotional rawness and silly lyrical concepts, united by a clear ethos to create whatever the band wanted to create no matter what; this tracklist will shift from a heavy near-emo moment like I Bleed to an almost-pastiche of early surf rock with Here Comes Your Man. Through all these different, sounds Doolittle is a beautiful and varied sampler of what magic the Pixies are capable of. Highlights: Debaser, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Dead, Mr. Grieves, La La Love You, No 13 Baby, Hey, Gouge Away

Great album, makes you feel like you’re in an introduction sequence of a 2002 comedy/feel good movie, while also feeling like you’re at the end of the school year and you’re starting a new life

Pixies, not everyone believes in them, I always knew they were real but I'd never seen or heard them until now. Or at least I hadnt realised I had. Of course "Here Comes Your Man" had not escaped my cultural education, but I didnt know who i was hearing. That oversite has been remedied now thank goodness. These guys are know for their Loud Quiet Loud song structures, they ooze 90s alt rock but they also sound more mature than that in some ways, tons of influence from earlier decades. But the vocal approach is pure 90s, really experimental. 'Tame' has whispers and explosions, 'Debaser' snarles and yowls. Both incredible songs by the way. Later in the record 'Silver' creaks, crows and sirens, in a not altogether experiment which one has to assume was deliberately off-putting. This one did have me checking the tracklisting to see how much of the album was left. Thankfully 'Gouge Away' kicks away those misgivings with an atmospheric and cool as fuck closer to the album right after. Silver aside i do have a vague feeling that I preferred the first half of the record, I think they frontloaded the bangers a little. But I liked it so much that I'll be putting it on again right away to really examine that. This is a fucking cool album. The most familiar reference point for the record musically and lyrically has got to be The White Stripes. The influences are so baked in, they obviously owe the Pixies a debt. Vocally, thematically and most explicitly texturally with the guitar arrangments and general textures used throughout the songs and album. In terms of vocal delivery i hear it in Jack White, and in Win Butler of Arcade Fire, who you can also tell must have been Pixies fans. It's so nice to discover the influences of your own musical foundations.

The Pixies are one of those bands that all of my favorite bands cite as a major influence. Listening through this album, I can definitely understand why. They may not be a personal favorite of mine, but their influence on 90s and 00s rock is undeniable.

Solid 90's album! This album always reminds me of college radio in the late 80's and early 90's. It was a precursor of what was to come, which I loved.

Back to back Pixies was a generator surprise. This is pretty great all the way through—and to my ears, pushing the boundaries of what pop was at that time.

You can definitely feel the influence this album had on the genre. I’ve listened to this once before and wasn’t crazy on it the first time but I preferred this listen for sure

The big songs on here are a way above some of the lesser known ones, but there’s plenty of big songs on here, so it’s class

It's taken about 8 years but I finally get it

Not as great as my first time listening but still very good. The heavy hitters are amazing and Hey is one of my favorite songs ever. But theres a few I dont really care for. 8.

Yeah this is an excellent record I would say, aside from a couple skips which is why I would not give it the full five stars, but like I said, I love this record, I mean how could I not! I would give it 4.5 stars if I could though. Yeah from the catchy and sometimes soothing melodies to the screaming and aggression this record does nothing but keep me intrigued and fuelling me with dopamine. I mean slicing up eyeballs is a line I can’t get enough of! I love Black Francis as a front man on this and I like the bass playing a lot, partly why some songs are so catchy and groovy. Yes the raw energy and enjoyabilty can’t be denied. Kind of grungeish icl. But for indie rock that is. It’s also entertaining. Even some of the filler is catchy and enjoyable to me🤷‍♂️It seems like there’s a variety of stuff going on too, just to add to the maintaining my interest strength that this thing has.

Weird but oddly good vocals I really like here your man

Has real highlights. A mate loved Pixies at school but I never really got it. Enjoyed this now though.

Great mix of catchy alt rock with weird angry proto grunge. Great songwriting and production. Classic.

this is almost too close to a generic rock album that i would disparage but pixies have a solidly unique sound. some great songs here! but maybe i'm saying this because it's pixies

I was excited through the first half as I was enjoying just about every song. Is this going to be the Pixies album that I finally enjoy almost completely? Then the second half hits and the fun stops. Of the three albums listed you could probably get one really great album from this band. So it goes

Musical genius to make these erratic songs work.
