Reviews (page 8 of 14)

I always forget how old this album is. 1989!!! Way ahead of its time! 4.4

This is really a very good album, pretty much without a doubt. That said, I listened to it the first time through and while I enjoyed it a lot, I felt like something was holding me back from being a 5-star album for me. I'm reading more about this, and I'm pretty sure it's that this thing sounds firmly like a '90s album, but it came out in 1989. This is basically a grunge album before the grunge-peak. Apparently Kurt Cobain thought they were going to get ripped because "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sounds like a Pixies song. One thing I really like about the Pixies is Kim Deal's backup vocals. I think Black Francis has a good enough voice and all, but the two together just add a lot of depth to the sound. I'm listening to this again, and I really enjoy it on the whole, but there's still some misses for me on here. All of the songs are super short, which I do kind of like, and there's a lot of great stuff on here. "Here Comes Your Man", "Debaser", and "Hey" are all top-tier songs. Call it a 4.5 album, I do think it's a little better than Surfer Rosa (though I think "Where Is My Mind?" is still my favorite Pixies song so far). Favorite song: Here Comes Your Man Other: Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr. Grieves, La La Love You, Hey, Gouge Away 10/7/24

So this is what all the bands from the 90s were listening to huh? I can tell this was hugely influential. If you'd ask me to guess when it was from I definitely would have guessed 90s so it was a surprise when I saw it technically came out in the 80s. I'll be very curious to see if this one grows on me more. Enjoyment wise this is probably a 3.75. But, with how influential it is I think it deserves at least a 4.

I don’t know what kind of crack they put in this album but I love it every time. The riff on Here Comes Your Man makes me smile every time, and to switch it up with Crackity Jones No 13 Baby (Which is criminally underrated by the way). I LOVE this album.

Mr grieves was the name of the pedophille gym teacher at my school m that song caught me off guard i didnt see the title

After the last Pixies album I got I was unsure how much I would like this. Turns out Doolittle is a significant improvement on its predecessor! Most of the songs are great, and while it doesn't veer too far out of its comfort zone it is a good listen while it's on. 4/5

4☆/5 09.30.2024

I didn’t discover the Pixies until about ten years ago when I was look at Kim Deal’s bass playing. There are definite some bangers on this album, including “There Goes Your Man” and “Debaser”. But the key track for me was, and is still my favorite song of theirs, “Wave of Mutilation”. I appreciated Black Frances’ sweet then stadium-level vocals with the grungy rock behind it. Our old band teacher Mr. Steven’s always used to yell, “Dynamics!!” to get us to emote musically. He should have just played this song for us. I’ve listened to several of their albums and this was definitely them at their best!

I've never quite fell for the Pixies. I'm not sure why they never captured my attention like the other bands from the 90s. I really like "Here Comes Your Man". And before today, I couldn't have told you it was a Pixies song even though it is a song I like and am familiar with already. The song has a throwback quality that sounds like it came out way before 1989. I don't like when Black Francis's voice gets all shredded and screamy. That has always kept me arm's length away from the Pixies. I can see why the Pixies are so influential in all things 90s especially grunge and Nirvana.

7/10 - a lot was going on and it was all over the place. But it hit places sometimes. He was yelling about a bunch of random stuff but the best one was during monkey going to heaven.

Good for a fun sunny day

Musically ahead of the pack. Few years later after it was released so many were chasing this sound.

this is like all that other music but a decade older!

Buen disco mejor doctor Está bien pero haaceepoco

i think this was a lot better than the album that Where Is My Mind was on (surfer rosa, I believe). It felt more coherent, more together and more elevated. 1.) Here Comes Your Man 2.) Hey 3.) La La La Love You

It was Good

Full of wild music. Vocals and guitar that move the body

После пятого прослушивания все-таки раскурил альбом. Вторая часть альбома определенно сильнее первой. Hey неплоха, другие тоже можно слушать. Но этот гаражный рок тяжел для восприятия. Андерграунд?

Classic and iconic album that influenced so many bands later on. It must have sounded very new and fresh in the late 1980s. The songs are catchy, tight and fun - the first songs aren't the greatest but after a few it's a perfect album with so many great songs. I can see why so many people like this album. Personally I liked it, though it's not entirely my favorite genre.

The pixies best. Loved it

OK, I will rate this 4 Stars if you would be willing to go back one year to Fishbone’s “Truth & Soul.” The Pixies are attempting what Fishbone accomplished perfectly with their album a year earlier: a cutting edge suite of songs weaving multiple genres together into a hard edged, hard rock tapestry. Love that album. And I like this one. This album is well crafted and you just may love it.

Didn't know if I'd enjoy this from the first record, but by the end I'd say I'm a fan. Solid.

Debaser 4.3 Tame 3.8 Wave of Mutilation 4 I Bleed 4.1 Here Comes Your Man 4.5 Dead 4 Monkey Gone to Heaven 4.4 Mr. Grieves 4.2 Crackity Jones 4 La La Love You 4.2 No. 13 Baby 4.3 There Goes My Gun 4.3 Hey 4.2 Silver 3.9 Gouge Away 4.2 Score: 4.16

The Pixies are one of those bands that broke up and reunited and stayed together much longer the second time. I saw one of their first reunited Pixies 2.0 shows (second) and later a show where they played the album, Doolittle in it's entirety. Seeing and hearing the album live really makes you appreciate what a fine album this was. I preferred Surfer Rosa, but Doolittle expands their sound and elevates the quality with a more confident band and more diverse material. This was the Pixies at their peak and though they continue to tour and release albums, it's hard to top their late 80's output.

Yeah an absolute classic, noisy as fuck and swell as hell

Extraordinary album from Pixies. Many bands that came after sounds like this album: i.e. The Strokes

August 22, 2024 HL: "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Debaser", "Wave of Mutilation", "Here Comes Your Man", "No. 13 Baby" it's been... 743 albums since the last Pixies, Surfer Rosa. And I didn't like it! It's an opinion I've been atoning for the last two years, even though I still don't completely embrace its fusion of quirky melodies with god-awful noise. Ultimately, both it and the Big Black album (both produced by Steve Albini) have earned my begrudging respect. So far, Doolittle is a much easier album to like for me, but not really leaps and bounds from Surfer. I guess a little polish can go a long way

I waited to review this till after I'd seen the Pixies live. They were fine. Just fine. Not really interacting with the audience. But did out played a show and went home. That's what I think of this album. Perfectly fine.

I've been through ups and downs with this band for a long time. Of course, when you're 15 watching Fight Club for the first time, Pixies are the coolest fucking band on the planet. I ate EVERYTHING up that they ever put out. Doolittle was one of the first vinyl records I ever bought, and I swear I wore it out. But that hunger eventually faded, and the music became so familiar that it was almost boring. It lost the spark it once gave. I always let the songs run their course if I have a communal playlist rolling, as I know most folks still dig it. But even now, the songs on this album sound kind of thin. But for purposes of this review, let me go back to my teens and my once-upon-a-time relationship with this album. It's an easy 5 star, and if this is your first time hearing it, I'm truly envious. I will deduct one star, only because to me this album is not timeless. It will eventually ware.

I would do little to dissuade someone from giving the best Pixies record five stars, so imagine my surprise when I walked away from my latest listen without that special five-star feeling.

Favourite song debaser

fav song : debaser

Very nice. I enjoyed this.

Solid album; I particularly appreciate the combination of melodic and harsh elements that somehow remain cohesive.

Pretty good! I didn't recognize anything except Here Comes Your Man. Monkey Gone to Heaven stood out as not worth its time on the album.

Loud quiet. In the best way. Love the contrast.

Never listened to this before. Pretty good. Another album where it's influence is starkly evident.

This album is very good. I was suprised as I have not enjoyed other Pixies albums. This will be listened to again and again. This album has a collection of great tunes like here comes your man, debaser and monkeys gone to heaven. Fun songs with great music and lyrics. Its a solid 4/5 for me. Favourite song: Monkeys gone to heaven and Mr Grieves Least favourite: all songs are worth a listen Album artwork: great cover. works well with the overall theme

Good, but not quite my style

i loved this album back in the day - or at least, parts of it - and i still love those parts now. here comes your man, their least-pixies song ever, is an ongoing favorite. i love frank's shouting, much better with the band than on his own; kim's bass, joey's jangly guitar (what up late-80s western ma!), and dave's tight drums...it's a great combo. musically, about 50% of the tracks on this one leave me more or less flat - but the OTHER 50%....man, that's somethin'

so that's where modest mouse got that voice

My favorite Pixies album.

4 stars after one listen

Solid alt-rock work, clearly influenced other bands 3.8

It's nice to hear an album by the Pixies again. It was fun. 4/5

Really catchy instrumentals coupled with quirky and surprisingly (or not) violent lyrics makes this album really unique and endearing to me. I prefer Surfer Rosa to this album, but it’s a great album. 4.1 stars

The pixies are always a good listen

Hella quirky one second, completely manic the next. And then there’s stuff like “Here Comes Your Man” which is just *chef’s kiss* Good stuff, I like it.

Off the bat, lemme put this in the exact words that helped me clarify my opinion on this album: if SURFER ROSA is the Pixies' IN UTERO, then DOOLITTLE is their NEVERMIND. Maybe that's a bad comparison to you, but here's what I mean... I get why some people would consider IN UTERO(/SURFER ROSA) to be the better of the two albums. Courtesy of Steve Albini's production, it's artier, abrasive and very un-commercial compared to its sibling. And of course, just because something's commercial doesn't automatically mean its worse, but if the strawman I constructed in my head does exist, then that's the reason they'd cite. And it wouldn't be unfounded; even Kurt(/Francis) didn't like the polish the other album got, prferring IN UTERO(/SURFER ROSA)'s more underground stylings. Which, I don't say all this like I don't personally get why they'd think that way. I can see through the fuzz and appreciate the music for its riffs, emotion and energy. Without the polish, it's a lot rawer, and to a lot of ears, honest. I **do** enjoy IN UTERO(/SURFER ROSA) a lot. But even as much as I understand, I can't deny who I am at my core. And at my core—well, I often tend more towards polish. Poppier production. And that's why I tend to agree with the more general opinion that NEVERMIND(/DOOLITTLE) is the better album. Not only is it the blueprint for a lot of music going forward, but, damn, it's got the **hooks**, without really sacrificing any of what makes the band special. Even without all the noise, the songs and musicianship are still just fantastic. I mean, let me drop the gimmick here to say this: I think I'm gonna remember and enjoy "Monkey Goes To Heaven" a lot longer than I am "Where Is My Mind?". Naturally, "Where Is My Mind?" isn't a worse song, and I think how it sounds is interesting. However, "Monkey Goes To Heaven" has "THEN GAAAAWD IS SEVEN," and that sticks in my head. That's just how it all falls out. (Also, I think this is the album Weird Al had in mind when he wrote his pastiche of the band, "First World Problems", and me being me that alone gives it extra points. Enough for me to tell my friends and enemies Ilike DOOLITTLE better, though just not enough to push it over into a 5. Maybe in time.)

I’m at a 4. This is a much improved effort over Surfer Rosa for my sensibilities; it blends a bit more of a commercialized sound with their techniques, and in terms of the overall mixing and sound production, what’s here does a much better job of letting each instrument shine, for the most part. Much like Welcome to the Pleasuredome, though, I do think this album suffers from being a little too directionless in the back half, which is weird to say for a 38 minute album, but that’s just how I feel. There’s a number of tracks here that seem to exist as jam session ideas that pad out time to make the album feel worth the purchase, and while I don’t think any of them are bad, I simply think they’re a little unnecessary, and once again hinder the album’s listening experience. With that said, I still enjoyed this more than Surfer Rosa – not enough to go up to a 5, but there is the chance that it could all click at a later point for me. There’s some great fucking tracks here, and while some of them get a little dragged down lyrically, I don’t think anything is outright ruined. It’s a much more approachable record, and whether that makes it better or worse is up to personal opinion. I just know this one clicked better for me, and it’s definitely worthy of being on the list. Pretty damn good 4.

pixies sind guet??? debaser huere geil tame au seehr cool und hesig wave of mutilation au schön ungezähmt und so here comes your man surf time i love jedes lied isch komplett andersch dasch huere geil. monkey gone to heaven isch huuuere geil. no 13 baby au seeehr geil.

There are more hits than misses here. The compositions and vocal choices are mostly interesting. Big fan of Wave of Mutilation. I like Here Comes Your Man and Hey. When I was younger I first heard Gouge Away as a cover by Hayden not knowing it was a cover. I still like his version slightly more, but this is pretty good too.

Despite not having where is my mind on it I think I enjoyed this album more than surfer Rosa. It’s just pure 90s alt that’s enjoyable from start to finish and has multiple fun songs (here comes your man, hey, debased) rather than just one memorable banger

A fun, reckless, short experience. In and out, no time wasted. Pixies are good for a quick hit. That’s my main issue with the album, that it feels like a fleeting moment. Wish it felt more substantial, but that’s not what the Pixies do from what I’ve heard of them. Standouts: Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Mr. Grieves, La La Love You, No 13 Baby, There Goes My Gun, Hey, and Gouge Away.

One of the catchiest albums I think I've ever heard. Some inconsistencies from song-to-song (especially in the beginning), but a driving and powerful album and ends really strong. Can definitely hear how influential this would be on the 90s as a whole. Top tracks: No 13 Baby, Hey, Gouge Away

My friend Joe in highschool loved this album & band. I remember them being a bit sleepier but maybe I've just mellowed out since then lol. That is to say, I enjoyed this more than I'd been thinking I would all these years. Good record.

I still see this record as a bit of a landmark for modern rock music and so it’s hard for me to be as objective as I probably should be about the actual content - the music itself. Being a sonic inspiration to Nirvana’s In Uero and (I think) an important part of cementing Steve Albini’s recording method/process/philosophy…. This is a monumental record with huge importance for the whole industry/art or popular music. As to the specific artistic contents I find the aspects of the Pixies work I like best are those contributions from Kim Deal and not the famous lead Black Francis … I still think this is a great record. It had a couple of low points for sure but the highs are so high and keep coming consistently. One thing I do love about Francis is I find him to be so brave with his guitar work - just belting out these screeching parts that don’t really make a ton of sense but just sound great. Again speaking to inspiration it sure seems like some of the noisier Kurt Cobain stuff borrowed from his swagger if not his substance.

I've listened to this album as a teenager, young adult with babies, and now in my 40s with teenagers, and it somehow still contains the same magic.

You have to be in the mood for this. Good album but can be annoying to some. Kim Deal's bass playing and grooves are fire!

Notable tracks: I Bleed, Dead, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Crackity Jones, Hey, Here Comes Your Man

This album's influence is without question. From U2 to Nirvana to Weezer, these fellas inspired so many great bands that it can't be overlooked. It's a great album, a great listen, and solid vocals. Will listen again. Best - Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Mr. Grieves, La La Love You, No 13 Baby, and Hey Worse - Tame and Gouge Away 4.0-4.25/5

Doolittle is Pixies’ best album by far and it’s not even close. “Debaser”, “Monkey Gone to Heaven”, “Here Comes Your Man”, and “Wave of Mutilation” are justifiably among the most well-known Pixies songs, but there’s also some seriously underrated songs here, like the punky Dead Kennedys-esqu “Crackity Jones”, the angsty “No 13 Baby”, the country-blues “Silver” or the proto-grunge almost bluesy “There Goes My Gun”. Kim Deal is at her best on this latter song along with many other tracks on this album. It’s easy to see why so many influential bands from the early 90s like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were heavily influenced and inspired by this album.

Close to 4 stars. Some songs were great.

I like the.. I don’t know what to call it other than breath work? In Tame. I also like that these songs are short and sweet and to the point - they don’t overstay their welcome. The female vocal hook in I Bleed reminds me of the female vocal hook in the Sex Bob-omb song in Scott Pilgrim! I wonder if that was inspired by this? I like the slightly 50s rock and roll vibe of Here Comes Your Man. Mr Grieves has an interesting off-kilter vibe. I like no 13 baby. Not a big fan of Hey.

this album sounds like some people freaking out

ive listened to this a while back when i seriously started listening to music. then, i felt like i didnt have enough influence to enjoy this and thought of it as very boring. now though, i think its a good record. side a is really great, but i cant really say the same for side b. side b took a big dip in quality for me and i didnt really enjoy most of it. at least hey and gouge away are pretty good. after revisiting though, i can appreciate it more, but i still think side b wasnt that good. 4 personal favs: wave of mutilation, monkey gone to heaven

117/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Solid grungy rock album. Like how it covers a few different moods/styles, some more upbeat and carefree and some a bit harder. Great bass lines. Feels like a good driving in the summer album. Favorites = Debaser and Here Comes Your Man because I like that chiller vibe more

A great band I've somehow never listened to before. A very intriguing sound and there are an interesting range of tempos. This album has clearly been influential in the sound of later artists. I would be interested in revisiting many of these songs again. Started off strong but there were also a few very similar sounding compositions towards the end. Overall, pretty good. Highlights: Debaser Wave of Mutilation Here Comes Your Man Mr. Grieves Gouge Away

Apparently I have already listened to a lot of this album. It was good but the flow was weird. 7.5/10

This is the Pixies album I’m most familiar with. Debaser, Her Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, La La Love You, Hey and especially Gouge Away were consistent repeats in my teenage years but over time I have found a greater appreciation for the wilder tracks like Dead, Mr Grieves, and Crackity Jones. This is a much slicker record than the previous, whether that’s a good thing is subjective to the listener. I like the raw sound of Surfer Rosa but I think this album has their best songs and needed the more polished recording that was achieved here. The drums are my only complaint as far as the mixing goes. Im not a fan of the gated reverb that replaced the massive drum room sound of Surfer Rosa. I would have preferred something more natural although for this collection of songs I could understand dialing it back some. I love the step up in vocal and instrumentation production and mixing. Kim Deal’s distinct bass playing and vocals really start to shine on this album, perfectly setting her up to be up front in The Breeders. Frank Black’s sometimes frantic vocals and songwriting seems to have paved the way for singers like Jack White and Isaac Brock. There are plenty of examples of the massive influence this album had in the music world and that became even more apparent to me on this listen. I give this one a 4.5!

Can’t listen now but I know this one. Some of their best songs are on here: “Debaser,” “Monkey Gone To Heaven”, “ Here Comes Your Man,” “Hey.”

i listened to this about a week ago, but it made me realize that i really did enjoy the pixies. everyone knows them from fight club/where is my mind, but i also knew Gouge Away prior to listening to this. cool to see them as the second album on this list. i dig it.

So cool. DEfinitive for grunge

With 15 songs and a full run time of under 40 minutes you gotta love it. Add to that the fact that 4 of the tracks were charting songs. Clearly a more slick and structured production on this moved the band into the more commercial realm, and yet has many Pixies purists over the years gripping Surfer Rosa all the more tightly. Whether intended or not, this album cemented the loud/quiet/loud format as the model of 90s alternative music which Nirvana et al gladly picked up and became famous for. Influence and legacy alone earn it high marks. Smells Like Doolittle Spirit to me.

I’m guessing this is probably considered the entry level album for non-Pixies-obsessed peeps…and for good reason. It’s def the most accessible and, to my dumb ears, the best. Fight me. Mavs in 6. LFG!!!! 3.75/5

This is my 2nd Pixies album on this list. I like this album more, but I feel like I should revisit the other one now. After several listens I started to get it and could hear how much it influenced 90's grunge and alternative. The bass playing and vocals of Kim Deal are where it's at for me. Solid record and pretty enjoyable listen.

Favorite: Debaser Was far better than I remembered, though it ended with my least favorite songs (Hey, Silver).

Just a solid rock group. Often overlooked but never disrespected. These guys are killing it.

Solid rock album.

Pixies lit the spark that led to the explosion that changed music at the start of the 90s. Doolittle effortlessly changes from harsh, proto grunge, to beautiful melodies. From the opener Bone Machine to the closer Gouge Away and everything in between, in many ways it reminds me of The White Album. They seem like throw away songs and yet are mostly amazing. 8.8/10

First album a day! Never listened to Pixies much in the past. Still a raw and fresh sound for 1989 release. Good head bopping tracks Noted songs: - Mr Grieves - La La love you - sounds like Morrisey - Hey - No 13 Baby - Silver - has a cool western movie slide guitar

Very good. 3.5

Whenever I want something raw and gritty, the Pixies are always one of my go-to bands. This is such a great album, but my favorite track is "Gouge Away."

we can never get enough pixies, can we? these guys are... really they're good but i just can't fully get into the genre a lot of the time. i don't know why, i don't know how. that's not to say this album isn't good. it's great! very grungy, a lot of tracks are almost hypnotic in nature, especially with those guitars. certain tracks stand out among the rest. this is the best pixies album i think i've heard out of this list.

4 on RYM. 4 here. A classic for a reason ( please oh please add decimal points here).

Love this as always

This was great! Loud, fast, catchy

This has fallen from future into its time. A short and condensed glimpse of what was to come years later. There is so much the listener from the 90ies and zeroes would have immediately grasped that did not resonate with the contemporaries . Above all, fun despite being meant serious, concise production, only a few flaws but no fillers. A nice series of mind twisting contrasts. I love it and listen to it since I discovered it 15 years after its release. If you like it or not, it should be part of any serious collection. 4.5

Great rock band I didn’t know much about before. I really enjoyed it. Interesting twists and rhythms

My second pixies album in a week lol. This is definitely better than surfer Rosa overall. It's just yet more unhinged rock music. Great stuff.... Some of the songs on side 2 are a bit less memorable

Powerful alt, many hits and rock vibe punk energy w an emo voice

This one is really going to fuck up my Spotify algorithm. I’ve spent years trying to convince it I don’t want to listen to the Pixies every day.

Here we go, something raw. This Monkey has Gone to Heaven (muahhh)! JMW Here we go!! Gouge Away is one of my favorites from this album. KW

I like this album, I've heard it many time in my life, and it has many good tracks on it. I do think A LOT of people prop this album up and say silly things about how great it is, things like "Radiohead wouldn't exist without The Pixies." STOP IT! It is a great overall album, but it ain't that. "Here Comes Your Man" sounds like something that belongs in the 50's, and certainly doesn't belong on this album. Highlights: Debaser Wave of Mutilation Hey

Fantastic Mr. Grieves is favorite track.

Love Doolittle. I don't want to give it a five, but it's higher than a four.

Gotta love when bands combine bouncy melodies and dark subject matter! Raw and unrelenting.

They eased up on the screaming (there is still some, but not excessive). Absolutely love This Monkey Has Gone To Heaven. A few other bangers on here as well. Will definitely throw this album on again in the future.

ive listened to this record a lot already, its great but im surprised its as respected as it is. 8/10

Classic

J’suis pas un grand fan des Pixies; jtrouve qu’il y a un peu trop de criage et l’instru est assez basique. Je sais pas pourquoi tout ça fonctionne super bien sur cet album, je le laisse donc passer avec une bonne note

Growing up I had heard of the Pixies but had never listened to them. This album was really something. I'm regretting not listening to them sooner. It's nice though, now, to be able to recognize their influence on other artists.

i enjoyed the dissonance

“Your favourite band’s favourite band” and it’s easy to see why. Didn’t expect to hear reggae influence on Mr. Grieves but I’m all hear for it.

Not bad

molto bello, alcuni più di altri, molto eterogenei e testi ironico e interpretabili

banger

i really liked this album - the vocalist is definitely pretty influential for future sounds.

this was a pleasant surprise, and I'm equally happy to see so many positive reviews! this album has a few duds for me, so not a perfect 5, but lots of fun and crazy variety. so many iconic songs on here! the pixies don't always 100% work for me, but this album mostly does.

I preferred this much more than Surfer Rose, it was an easy, good quality album

Good stuff.

Classic and great in many ways. Never listened to this album in it's entirety before now, but overall I'm glad I did even though some songs sound too similar.

Debaser, waves of mutilation, here comes your man.

Hey, Debaser

Gimme those 4 chord songs and I’m in heaven.

Even though ive concert tickets to see these guys later this year, the Pixies are still a group I really need to be in the mood for, definitely not something to listen to at the start of a day. My favourite track is probs Gouge Away. Least favourite, I Bleed.

This album is great! High energy. Did anyone else feel like “I Bleed” was Weezer’s “Undone Sweater” song just 5 years earlier? A clear influence. Their impact goes beyond that. I hear “here comes your man” in the Felice Brothers. Minus one star for the late 80s/90s rhythm guitar sounds that I am allergic to now. They make up for it with other grooves and intricacies.

4.5 would be 5 if not for Silver. They should have put Into the White or Manta Ray on instead.

I liked this one a lot better than the first pixies album on our list. This album helps me understand why this band has such a following and was influential in alternative music. Glad I listened.

It was good, second Pixie album of the week, though.

Classic alt/indie. all the songs are super catchy, even pretty noisy. just classic

völlig pixie-unbewandert sage ich: kann man gut machen

Fun album.

Weird, but more comprehensible than Surfer Rosa was

This in incredible.

A- Debaser 4 Tame 3 Wave Of Mutilation 4 I Bleed 4 Here Comes Your Man 5 Dead 3 Monkey Gone To Heaven 5 Mr. Grieves 5 Crackity Jones 5 La La Love You 4 No. 13 Baby 4 There Goes My Gun 4 Hey 5 Silver 3 Gouge Away 4 This is a great album that I was already very familiar with. I'm always curious how I'll rate albums I already know from top to bottom. This bad boy didn't disappoint. I was hoping maybe it could push for 5 territory, but it didn't quite get there.

Good. Had a few of their songs already on my playlist but hadn't tried the album before.

I love this album. Oddball lyrics, aggressive guitar, off-kilter vocal harmonies, etc. It is hooky and lovably nutty. I am in between 4 and 5 stars, but I think rounding-down will be my general approach.

Only lacked in some musical variety for the full 5

אלבום ממש טוב!

All alt rock from this era came from this album. Some of my favorite Pixies songs on here.

I think that i've never un my life listened to Pixies, or at least any song of this album. I liked it! They have really good songs and for being one of the first bands who gave us Alternative Rock, makes me love this album even more.

Anarchic, chaotic, joyful, anguished, loud and rebellious. It's a fantastic album. Makes no apologies for what it is, doesn't need to. Stay loud forever.

Sehr abwechslungsreiches Alternative-Album

What was that? Great and unusual songwriting. Very weird. Sounds like surrealistic surf-rock from time to time. Last couple of songs are not as interesting as the rest of the record.

Kinda weird. Sometimes sounds like delirium. Unusual chord progressions, partly punk, partly alternative. Not my cup of tea.

I liked this album more than I had expected to. I guess I didn't know much about the Pixies. I saved a couple songs to my Spotify favorites.

Listened to this in Puerto Rico. Just saw modest mose Friday. So much influence here. Really enjoyed the album. Debased catchy I bleed. Like the guitar riff Hear Comes Your Man - only one I recognize so far, probably a good reason, catchy. Mr Grieves - surprising, great There goes my gun - might have heard this too. Like the melody. Hey - nice little tunes

Some classics on here, mixed with great songs you’ll swear you’ve heard a thousand times. You can hear the direction guitar music would take in the 90s start here. Great vocals with some complex shifts and melodies.

With a surprisingly modern sound for its time and fantastic production quality there is little negative to say about this LP aside from there aren't what I would call any exceptional hits, though there are minor misses. Black Francis's varied tone and harsh lyricism pay off with clean mixing which creates a gritty soundscape appropriate for the move into the 1990s.

This album really went through some changes for me. I found it largely incomprehensible in my first listen. Just a little too much noise, a little too tongue in cheek. Nothing for me to grasp onto. I liked when it became melodic - like in wave of mutilation and here comes your man. But my second time through I started to hear all the crashing and dissonance as a way to offset the melodies, and normally as a counterpoint to something softer going on in the background. I had never listened to the pixies before, but I look forward to revisiting this album and the rest of their discography. I'm going 4 stars here but I could easily see this moving up with more listens.

Quite nice that.

Had never listened to this album but really enjoyed it

Great day of listening. Very pleased with this one. 3.5/5

Probably not my favorite Pixies album but it absolutely deserves to be on this list. Undeniable influence on 90 alternative and indie bands. Kinda crazy how ahead of its time this was. Has like a proto-In Utero vibe to it. Super raw.

har skjutit upp denna alldeles för länge

I like the pixies a lot I've discovered- I just end up grooving.

Can do without the screamy stuff but liked the second half. Quite a clear pathway to a lot of music I liked in the 90s and early 00s and a lot of great guitar work.

I was about ready to write it off after a screeching generic punk opener, but definitely worth staying until the end. Some great songs, wellcrafted and fun.

- Very garage vibes - A lot more upbeat than I was expecting, but mellowed out a little in the back half - Will definitely have to go back to this one, really interesting sound that you can tell inspired a lot of 90s grunge

- Kurt Cobain said he wanted Nirvana to sound like the Pixies and now I get it - solid variety of sounds/styles -3.5

Enjoyable but nothing permanent for me. My heyday for alternative rock is mid 90's, though I've always heard good things about the Pixies.

This is a classic! Almost all the tracks are good, maybe with the excpetion of Dead and La La Love You. Standout tracks are Here Comes Your Man, Debaser and Monkey Gone to Heaven

Iconic Best bass sound ever

Maybe the best Pixies album. I have a not so great ex who proselytized this album to me, so I was inclined to dislike it, but ultimately could not. It's too good. Kim Deal's vocals are vital to this album's sound and texture ("I Bleed" is a great example). Highlights: Debaser, Wave Of Mutilation, I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr. Grieves, Hey

4 - I knew quite a few of the songs off of here already thanks to my partner. The songs that I ended up saving are very solid and I appreciated the vocals more this time around. I'd say I liked it better than Surfer Rosa, but not enough so for this one to get into the 4.5 range. I could definitely see it getting there with a relisten or two though.

Really enjoyable listen even though it's not my kind of music overall. 'Hey' is a hell of a song.

I knew several songs on this album and have tried listening through the whole album previously. My reaction this time was similar. I really, really like the tracks I liked before and found one or two of the others enjoyable. The others I had a hard time getting into. I will say many times I need numerous attempts at an album to fully enjoy it, even having some tracks I dislike at first sometimes becoming my favorites. But I have to have the desire to come back and "do the work" of re-listening. I think this album I'll do the work on and I think it, as a cohesive whole, is really well done.

Very solid album overall. Great rock melodies.

Pixies have historically been a songs band for me, but tonight, this one really clicked with me as a whole for the first time. Just fucking fantastic, and definitely has room to grow as I continue to spend more time with it. 4.5/5

This album has nostalgia value because debaser is from an ncaa football game I played as a kid. They had a career mode that I spent many hours on

A lot has been said about the Pixies, and about this album. What can I add? I enjoy the wacky, whimsical lyrics and punchy, pop-punk/alt musicality. Good stuff.

The start of the upbeat alternative vibe is soo iconic, plus his screaming is so satisfying. The guitar and drums are veeery satisfying. Loved this song. Same vibe but starting soft with the second song, there was a little outbreak, also the "got hips like Cinderella" was said soo weirdly good(in a whisper way). The end with the woman mumbering is quite fun as well. Also loved this. This one's low key better than deep purple I must say. Third song was fully alternative, and soo perfect I suppose, full of sounds and wanted even more of it, but still love the fact that they're short. 4th song has a weird lyrical delivery, with the man and woman singing together, while rocky instruments are in the way. Also this man can SCREAM. 5th song is one of their popular song, and a great pop song in general too. I get that, because it's so simple and singable, the chord(as genius says) suggests that. 6th song is biblical, as the author says himself. Love how he screams "dead". The chord change must be mentioned, it's so good. Well this genre is generally good, and pixies make it much better too. 7th song has an amazing beat. Also he casually talks at the start, so quite fun. He said that some things don't make sense in the song, maybe used just for the rhyme(he is so main character). Also he's a surrealist so makes sense. I adore the 8th song's start beat. It got better. Smn said album name was about an animal talker doctor, but another one said WW2 general, soo that's confusing, plus this song is about ecological disaster which the doctor could solve but Mr. Grieves, aka death, would still win(?). Not suree. 9th song is quite short but iconic, because the way he says the name of the song scratches my brain, also apparently it's about his weird gay roommate, who loved Flintstones. Different love for this song. 10th song is NOT about love, despite the lyrics it's a comedic joke type song. I loved that there was different vocals here, pluus the war switching while saying I love you. 11th song is 13 in English alphabet is m so marijuana and he needs that girl like marijuana, not sure about that, but there is a long ass outro, not expected, with Floyd I would take it normally, but pixies. It's quite fun, the guitar outro. Agaaain 12th song has a wonderful start. I didn't get the meaning somehow. But it was basically a three line poem, which was delivered at it's best. Umm again 13th song meaning is weird but understandable(not as much). Great way to say "hey". And his screaming is topp. It has a melancholy vibe, especially in the chorus. He's being satirical, and sarcastic and ironic and so more, that's why I need to study this album. 14th song was kind of sad, a west-folk vibe with the instruments. Also there was a woman's vocal again introduced. Liked the beat, nothing unique I should say. Last song is biblical, about Samson and his wife Delilah, who betrayed and had Samson had his eyes gouged out by idk who. Well there's a lot to the story, too lazy to write them here. Again classic pixies, alternative vibes, saddening guitar beat and so on. I'd say this style fits them, also black said this was the best song on the album. I'm gonna rate this 4, since it satisfied me soo much, so 5 star would only be for the albums that are literally my style and genre.

I love this album but I like their slowed down BBC UK surf version of Wave of Mutilation more. I remember hearing it in Pump Up the Volume as a preteen and tracking down the band

Good Alt rock album its influence is clear on bands like Weezer, parts reminded of Dominic fikes Sunburn.

Quality. Ahead of its time, really good stuff. I used to think this was nowhere near as good as surfer Rosa but now I think they're a lot closer. Probably still prefer surfer Rosa but only by a little bit.

Fun album,

Good ol‘ pixies

Занимљив албум 7/10

A cool and brooding album, heard hints of the white stripes in their work so I'm guessing had to be an inspiration for them.

This is really great in my opinion. Another one that I'll be looking for a physical copy of to add to my collection.

meow debaser- 6 or 7. um. i like how he screams. tame- 7. ummmmmm yeah wave of mutilation- oh this is a different version than what i know. i like this version its livelier but i prefer the other one. this one is still a 7 or so i bleed- omg i forgot music was playing. um. 5 or 6. pixie songs kinda all sound the same sorry here comes your man- 7. the main riff reminds me of a toyota commercial. dead-oh umm 5 ig monkey gone to heaven- i like monkeys. i feel like i gotta give this a 7. mr grieves- 7 crackity jones- yeah 6 ig. i dont have a lot to say pixie songs are pretty formulaic la la love you- la la la la. 7. no 13 baby- its the eleventh track.... RICA??? me when im in a state. 6 or 7 there goes my gun- 5. he just said the same couple of sentences over and over. respect. hey- hello. um. i like this song but it kind of cringes me out due to memories. i do like whores though.... 6 silver- oh i like this cowboy feel. trailer music. 6 gouge away- i like the use of the word gouge. ummmm 5 or 6 yeah. i think its a good closer. favorite track- 13 baby or wave of mutilation

Iconic rock sound during a milestone transition from hair metal to grunge. Awesome riffs, tones and singing. I see why people like this band so much.

Favorite Tracks: Debaser Wave of Mutilation Silver

3-4 klasse songs

As though it were a bomb set off in an ever-changing scene, Pixies' Doolittle sets the template for not just the group going forward but for indie rock music in general. Accessible yet surrealistic, charming yet off-kilter, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how impactful this album was and is to listeners and musicians and Doolittle still holds up to this day. Favorites: Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr. Grieves, La La Love You, No 13 Baby, Hey, Gouge Away.

Un bon capharnaüm auditif

For an American band, the Pixies sound really British, perhaps it's just their particular brand of late 1980s alt rock, or that their producers is from Liverpool. A super fun and upbeat record that makes you want to jump around get into it. La La Love you gets best vote for me for the lyrics "Shake your butt (not too hard)". Best: La La Love You Worst: Silver

Four absolute top-shelf tunes – "Debaser," "Monkey" "Wave of M" and "Here Comes Your Man" – but much of the rest can feel a bit larky and tossed-off, which keeps this from the first rank of albums. One loves the mock deconstructed love song (anti-ballad) "La La Love You" and doesn't the opening of "Mr. Grieves" ready one for Jim Morrison to come bouncing asking about the location of the nearest whiskey bar? A very fun ride, now as it was then, and a pure artifact of its time.

Very enjoyable and I can feel the influence the Pixies had on alternative rock.

Really good, but not good enough to warrant being the 60th top album on Rym. Maybe I’ll start to like it even more on relistens

Hat was von Stones, acdc, Nirvana, aber auch velvet underground. Man kann sehr deutlich hören was es später beeinflusst hat. Mag es definitiv auch wenn es teileiweise recht speziell war.

Amazing album high 8

Love the opening bars of the first track ‘Debaser’ (that bass 🤩) and it then builds into that power-punk-pop sound that’s right up my street. And there’s that simple but beautiful bass again on ‘Tame’ the platform for some swirling guitar riffs and some weird angry and melodic vocals. What’s not to love? The pattern for the album is set with some great hooks and guitars. Highlights for me are ‘Here Comes Your Man’ (the catchiest and poppiest they get), ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’ and ‘No. 13 Baby’. A high 4.

This album sounds about 10 years early for their time, thought it was pretty good though there were a few clunkers in there. I recognized "La La Love You" from the movie Stuck On You and "Hey" from Zach & Miri lol. 7/10.

Damn close to 5 stars. Probably 4.75.

Seems to be a similar story, but the first half of this is so much better than the second half. Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, and Monkey Gone to Heaven are all indie/alternative rock classics, but there is a lot of bad in the back half. Crackity Jones, La La Love You, No 13 Baby are all pretty awful and signs of what would come later in the Pixies’ and Frank Black’s career. The redeeming qualities of Hey and There Goes My Gun save it from being a complete switch off after Mr. Grieves. With that said, there is enough great here to offset the bad, even if this pales in comparison to Surfer Rosa.

I hadn’t really ever listen to this previously, but of course once hearing it there are several songs you’re going to know anyway. I never really realized the similarity (to me anyway) to Husker Du and Sugar in a lot of ways. Great album though.

Enjoyed this! Def want to listen again

All like 3 minunte classics w/frank blackisms and guitar over driving bass with slightly off kilter beats

Still a killer after all these years.

love this album. 4.5

Surprise rockband song in here, album was a good listen

4/5 - I am a big fan of this, will listen again

Not bad at all

Really dig it

Enjoyed this a lot! Will be listening again.

Quite like it.

Better than I remembered it being. I was not a fan for forever but as a whole this album feeds my inner punk kid. I liked it.

Debaser als Startnummer setzt den Ton für das Album. Finde ich sehr gut und erinnert mich an Skateboard-Spiele aus meiner Kindheit.

Rocks hard with pop guitar hooks over screaming vocals.

Top notch loud-quiet-loud

Debaser: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Un_Chien_Andalou#:~:text=The%20title%20of%20the%20film,written%20in%20a%20few%20days. yeah yeah it’s great but there’s something dead about it, they’re holding back, they’re too clever

pixies good 🫡

This Monkey’s gone to Heaven listening to track 7, oh god is seven.

Great. Fuckin' great. Every song sounds different. Every song rocks. 🐵🙈🙉🙊

I love this album. The first two tracks punch you so hard. All of the guitar riffs are just so catchy, I love when the vocalist just goes crazy, this is just super tight and super energetic. Favorite(s): Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Dead, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr. Grieves, There Goes My Gun, Hey, Gouge Away

Pretty grungy, came past real fast, but generally enjoyable

listened to television recently and can see where they maybe took some inspiration from. can see this being very influential for what was to come later in 90s rock/guitar music. ok thanks

amazing. wonderful even

Angry, wierd, funny. Very few low moments, great dynamic range. Keeps up the punch all the way through.

Already familiar with this one

Still revolutionary

Pixies is fine but nothing mew

Very heavy and moody. Well put together with a lot of elements to keep the listener on the edge of their seat. I can hear how this was a very important early grunge album, especially given its time.

This was a nice throwback.

Loved it. I can’t believe I missed this band in the 90s. It’s so up my alley!

I've been hearing that this is almost universally beloved for a long time. Nice to finally make the time to listen. Considering how totally disappointing was Surfer Rosa, this is WAY better. A decent producer seems to make a big difference, and it sounds like someone made them rehearse everything at least a couple times. The sound of every instrument is vastly better. The subjects are weird and wonderful and make me think. It's still quite rough and grating, it's not love at first sight, but I'll definitely be able to give this a few more tries and I think it'll grow on me.

Great album

Great album

My expatiations were blown away by this album. I was really dreading listening tot this because I am not a huge fan of the Pixies and only knew one song on this album (Here comes your man). I was wrong and this album rocked. It sounded great and it was a journey that left me wanting more.

This was OK and I can imagine a situation where I listen to it again. Possibly a bit shouty for my taste, but there are some decent tracks.

8 взорванных квартир из 10

Debaser is an all-time and probably my favorite pixies song (shout-out skate 3). A lot of other solid tracks on this one. I still feel like the pixies haven't really clicked for me yet so I'll give this like a 7/10 and round up

back and forth between a 4 & 5 for this album. it’s just too damn good. Monkey goes to heaven is a banger. Wave of M everyone knows is a timeless classic. debaser opening the album is $$$. i’ll give it a 4 bc it’s not perfect front to back but it’s pretty damn close!

This may be the Pixies' greatest album as it holds multiple major tracks in their catalog. Coming in at a perfectly paced and bite-size album it reaches some of the groups heights, but doesn't show their ground-breaking edge.

I have somehow missed out on the Pixies over the years. And that's on me. I get it now.

Pretty good. Really good? Idk. I’ve listened to this a million times and it’s obviously good but would never consider it one of my favorites

Really enjoyed it

This is great isn't it? What a rush. I listened to it in the car, and belted out Monkey, Debaser and Here Comes Your Man. I also think there's a delicacy to Pixies that often goes unnoticed. So here I am, noticing it.

Wel leuke rock, lekker heavy op de bas, en ook wel speels.

overall rating: 7/10 favourite song: monkey gone to heaven ( 10/10) runner up favourite: crackity jones ( 8.5/10 ) least favourite: silver ( 4/10 ) album cover: 8/10 vocals: 9/10 instrumentals: 7/10 would i recommend ? : i would recommend songs from this over the actual album , but if i knew someone was alt / indie / rock fan i would. other: i really love the two different vocals in this album. while the songs don’t sound outstandingly different from one another instrumentally , they all still sound pretty good and are quite catchy. the theme and sound of the album matches really well , you wouldn’t confuse any of the songs to be in a different album or made by any other artists. i’ve been listening to monkey gone to heaven for a few months before i listened to the album in full so i had high hopes and they were almost met ( dead , hey and wave of mutilation didn’t really impress me compared to the rest ). i wish i could sing like that.

I am very happy that this album pulls up on here, I remember that someone recommended it to me last year but I totally forgot to listen to it. So now a second chance (: What an amazing album, very diverse and one you can really jam on. Definitely listening to this one again. Also very curious if this one sounds good on vinyl. Sometimes a bit to heavy rock for me so… 4,0

Really liked this album

Outside of "Here Comes Your Man," I wasn't really familiar with this album. But after five plays over the last couple weeks, it seemed to grow on me each time. Great record that I'm happy to add into the rotation.

Their most consistent album, for me. 4 / 5 stars.

I liked it. Interesting range in the album, and all of it was pretty good.

Starting off strong with the instrumentals, I like the music of it, might need getting used to the lyrics and voice, mostly because I try to listen to music in the background out loud while doing things, so this different than other things I've played in the background Kinda cool to listen to something I would've not had the chance for I can see how it inspired a lot of alternative rock, from my limited knowledge on the genre of course Very interesting song names lol More yelling than I'm used to in songs so I'm getting lil jump scares 😭 definitely feel the surreal vibes I really like the music in the background, definitely need an instrumental version on some of these in the background bc it sounds so nice The album cover looks really nice Wait!! I'm actually liking it a lot more now, I think I'm getting used to it Wave of Mutilation is such a nice vibe for a song with that name 😭, but really like that one rn The concerts must've gone so hard Here Comes Your Man is more my vibe I think! Saving that one for sure I like Dead so far, I think the more I listen the more I'm getting used to sound I think my apprehension from the start is really just I haven't listened to a lot of things like this, and I'm actually quite liking it The visual image the songs are kinda painting is something I'm starting to really vibe with 👁️👁️ THIS MONKEYS GONE TO HEAVEN 🗣️ Crackity Jones!!!!! OKAY GO OFF IF YOU WANT!!! La la love you is such a VIBE, favoriting that one too, I like the whistle in the background, is it called a wolf whistle? Why did I stop writing notes??

slaps still

not my type of music but they have a few bangers

I can't tell if this is embarrassing, but doing this challenge has gotten me to stay up every night to see what new album I'm listening to tomorrow. I like its suspense, and the fact that it could be anything adds to that. Now, I was bound to relisten to an album I'd already checked out, which could be good or bad depending on my mood. Once Doolittle showed up as the next album I had to hear, I just got excited. I've listened to this album many times, and its replay value is immense. I could spend all day only listening to this album and not get sick of it. It's a reliable album; it's like grilled cheese. Don't know what to eat? Grilled cheese. Grilled cheese is fucking amazing, it's so simple, but it comes together so well that it just makes you ask, "I sure do want another grilled cheese.". The songs on this album are so short and straightforward, yet they won't leave your head. You never really ask yourself, "Oh my god, how did they make this" but you don't eat grilled cheese for the complexity of it all, do you? I don't know how you can hate this album. How can you listen to Debaser without needing to dance to it? I need help to make a top 5 song on this album. 90% of the songs are 10/10s in my book, and the sounds are so fucking good. The singing, production, and instruments are consistent in this album. There's no dud in here. It ranges from really solid to 10/10 songs. If your entire album is that, you have a classic on your hands. Now excuse me, I'm going to listen to Mr. Grieves while making a grilled cheese.

Love Here Comes Your Man.

I don't enjoy the majority of songs here, but there's enough solid ones to barely scrape a 3.

Monkey gone to heaven is a good track, as well as no. 13. For such an influential alternative album from 1989, the recording quality is impressive. It’s a unique listen but there’s just enough meat on the bone to keep listening.

Great indie rock album

So good!

Chien!! Andalusia!!!! This is a lot more punk rock than I remember. Listened to this a lot in high school and even made a music video to Here Comes Your Man. Aged well.

Another album without their number one hit? My mind is so blown that I just can’t find it. This album was actually really good. I see you, Pixies

Light 8

The streaming numbers for something this abrasive is pretty impressive. Ahead of it's time for 1989. Sounds like an early smashing pumpkins album mixed with punk and krautrock. Score: 80 Art: 70

2nd Pixies album - A great mix of many musical styles. Some real stellar stuff here.

The best Pixies album - solid banger after banger. Particular highlights include Debaser (one of my favourite bass-heavy songs, absolutely sexy), I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man (there’s a reason this one is so well-know, very catchy), and Monkey Gone to Heaven.

Amazing discovery. Didn't know the band and feel like exactly what I was looking for today. #1990s #alternative_rock

Is gut

I like this a lot more than I thought. Alt rock with punk and singing.

The growth from Surfer Rosa to Doolittle is incredible. I had a blast listening to this.

Pretty good! I feel like the Pixies are a band I would've loved at an earlier point in my life. This was a good album though, 👍 for sure

great songwriting and lyrics, fast paced and doesn’t linger on one idea for too long which works very well and keeps you engaged effortlessly

Buen albúm, bastante progresivo y con notas algo fuera de época 7/10

I always felt a little embarrassed that I described myself as a big Pixies fan, but I'd only listened to "Death to the Pixies," their 1997 best-of. But I think I was right - some of the tracks here just aren't that great. Having said that, a bad Pixies song is still better than most songs. The perfect Pixies song is goth-rock, very short, and features Kim Deal.

1989, this must've been a real game changer. Some hits on here that I was gifted in my youth, I hope the next generations don't lose what this gave.

Fun. Messy. Very varied and lively. I really enjoyed this, but it's too unrefined to be a 5.

iconic 90’s weirdo rock. some truly timeless songs on this record. the lyrics seem like they don’t make sense, but they do. amazing idk what to say.

I've listened to this one before. God, the guitar sound on this is so good. Definitely an all-time cool kids' record. How the hell are the songs on this shorter than the Sex Pistols? Brevity is wit, Sid. Take notes. Overall, a great album for a slick summer day. Sometimes the classics are classic for a reason.

Here comes your man was definitely my favorite, but I had at the very least heard that tune before. Good album but some of the songs felt a little out of place

This album is really great. Pixies were one of those bands I heard up growing up but had just missed - instead listening to their later projects like the Breeders. I was really introduced to them around 2000 and kind of shrugged my shoulders at it. But in the last 20+ years I've really come to see how incredible they were.

great album. will come back to this for sure

Great - already liked Pixies but full album was better than expected.

классный альбом очень приятно и легко слушается не могу сказать, что что-то сильно удивило, просто приятненько и вкусненько

Debaser kan vara top 10 bästa låtar någonsin. Resten kommer inte upp i samma nivå

A wild ride of an album the whole way through - the tracks switch things up from one another such that I never knew what to expect next. Really enjoyed the variety. Favorite tracks: I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man, Hey, Silver.

Little hit or miss but the hits are great. Really love Mr Grieves.

This is a great album. I had heard most of it at various times over the year, so it's nice to listen to it all the way through. Helps me get more of a feel for it. I've recently found some of Kim Deal's more current music, and she's still phenomenal. This band was, in a way, ahead of their time, or at least seem to me to be pushing into new styles in the 80s when they wrote and recorded this album. A lot of grunge that followed seems somewhat rooted in what the Pixies did in the 80s.

"Debaser" is heat "Tame" anything but tame (Kurt quoted them as being the direct inspiration for Nevermind and I hear it here) "Wave of Mutilation" classic guitar hero Anharmonic vocal backing in "I Bleed" that makes more sense with the ending "Here Comes Your Man" classic 500 days of summer. So much range with this band. "Dead" such a change from the last song. Casual punk rock biblical allusion. "This Monkey's Gone to Heaven" is an environmental song. Never noticed that before (but I'm not the lyric guy). Some really rocking parts on this track. "Then GOOOOOD IS SEVEN" "Mr. Grieves" has some super catchy stuff. I felt some sort of comfort in this track. "Crackity Jones" just solidifies the idea that to me this band was/is a huge ball of creativity. How do you have so many genres in one album but make it work? "La La Love You" see above comment. How does this come after the previous track? How? And how am I okay with this? Fascinating. They just asked drummer Dave to sing on this one because why not? "No. 13 Baby" I truly love the ending instrumental of this song. It's so cool. I am seeing where bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dandy Warhols got their style. "There Goes My Gun" surfing punk rock cowboy abstract story about gun go boom. "Hey" feels Stonesy. I'm so surprised that I love Black Francis's super frenetic silly delivery. But maybe I shouldn't be surprised. "Silver" another cowboy. Honestly this one kinda feels like a B-side track but I ain't complaining. "Gouge Away" is another biblical reference through a punk rock lens. I dig it. That little palm muted guitar lick is very very sick. Cathartic, explosive, creative bite-sized vignettes of crazy. Silly, satirical, but cool. Truly a unique record and band.

I really liked it. I was a little suprised, because I thought the vocals would put me off like they had before, but they really didn’t.

Wow I love this! It’s so fun, and off-kilter, in a head-not-screwed-on-tight kind of way. And so sticky. If I remember, this is an album where a garage, raw, imperfect band worked with a producer to get 10% more perfect, and I think they nailed the balance here. Nothing is ever too tacked down or “nice,” which suits the bad and the songs really well. And I love the lead singer… he brings the level of intensity that’s hard to look away from. Reminds me of another alternative album from last week— the lead singer can make or break a project like this. “Here comes your man” is so good, and so sticky. They are good at their craft! A lot of Beatles structures or progressions, but done their way. Overall, great fun, and I’ll definitely return to this album. 4/5

Some classic rock sounds to this album, I particularly like the energy in the vocalists voice on tracks like ‘Tame’ and ‘Crackity Jones’. Not an album I would really return to for a casual listen but overall some nice sounds and a good mix of tracks which I think the shorter song lengths help with

A fine alt-rock album, emblematic of a certain era, though I'm not quite as estatically into this band as some.
