Buenardo

me encanto nunca lo habia escuchado entero

Definitely a good album just not totally my thing. Can hear how influential it was though

(generally i thought i LIKED Pixies... but...) Likes: 1) the DRUMS on every track are great.... and gets me bopping to the the drums start and reckon it's gonna by a 4... her voice. DISLIKES but his yelling was a bit much ... oo a Debaser.... best tracks : I bleed (for the bass line and slow build , slow liscious drums laid on..) .

A couple things to start, if you have never seen the Pixies live, do yourself a favor and go see. You will not be disappointed. My cousin David and his wife are big Pixie fans and tried to turn me on them a long time ago. For whatever reason, just didn't click me at the time. Saw them live about 5-6 years ago and now all the Shank's are Pixie fans. Great album. Starts off with my favorite Pixie song, Debaser. And I have to be honest, I call myself a Pixie fan, but this may have the first time I have listened to this album from start to finish. Shame on me..... Very good songs throughout entire album. I know my beautiful wife really likes Here comes my man and I do too, but probably their most "popish" song off the album. Different than all the other songs, but still good. Gouge, Hey, Monkey goes to Heaven are other songs that seem to stand out to me. But again, not a bad song off this album. Can't believe this was one their earliest albums. Solid I am know inspired to go back and listen to all their albums, start to finish. I can't quite get to that magical 5, but damn near close. 4.5 Go see these guys live!

Man, this is a good one. It would be perfect if it also had "Where is my Mind" on it as well but alas... This is another must have if you're at all interested in 90's music. I'd argue that Doolittle is more important than Surfer Rosa (not a dig - just saying). This album has songs that still routinely show up in popular culture. In fact, I've been recently going through the Forza Horizon series and Debaser features as one of the most well-known songs in that game. Sometimes the lyrics are a little cringe but I don't think there is a single band that isn't guilty of being cringy. Don't regret seeing them. Good stuff. 4.5

Rimelig fedt. 4/5

Yeah, yeah, I get it.

I didn’t know what to expect going into this one. I had heard of Pixies, but always thought it was some punk band I wouldn’t be interested in. Was very surprised when the first song came on, and I realized quickly how similar to the grunge/rock music I like, this was. You can definitely tell that 90s music was heavily influenced by this stuff, and I’m surprised it wasn’t more “mainstream”. Really enjoyed this album and will likely add it to my vinyl collection down the road.

Some great songs and strong album.

My favourite Pixies album. Opening with Debaser and continuing on with songs like Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven. Great songs and decent sound.

One of the reasons I love this project and this site is the encouragement to revisit stuff like this, as well as the exposure to so many other sounds that this time around I feel my ears and my brain were much more ready and on board for this. For the first (second and third) time ever I've very much enjoyed this album. I don't know that I'm gonna rush out and buy myself a copy tomorrow or anything, but I also no longer think it doesn't need to be on my shelf. I may not be one of the cool kids yet, but at least they're less likely to stuff me in a garbage can! (I've also pretty much always been twice their size, so it would be very hard for the cool kids to even be able to stuff me in a garbage can if they wanted to!) I'm looking forward to seeing how this newfound enjoyment carries over to other albums in their catalogue.

Great rock album

Never heard much of the Pixies before (although we've had Bossanova a while ago on this which I didn't enjoy that much), but I was pleasantly surprised by this. Still a bit angry, shouty, and tuneless in places, but there's an amazing energy to it, a huge amount of variety without losing a common thread, and it's just a good fun listen. 4/5.

Debaser, Here comes your man … need I say anymore … terrific record !

Not listened to the Pixies before but I enjoyed it more than I expected, they have an interesting style for the late 80s. The lyrics are not the strongest aspect of the album. A lot of them just end up repeat the same lines over and over again. Highlights were "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Debaser".

A really awesome album that was ahead of it's time. Not much more to say about it for me. It doesn't quite hit the 5 star mark because a few songs aren't all that notable for me, but it's short, sweet, and a really high four star. We're talking super high four star.

Very good album top to bottom. It feels so modern, considering it came out in 1989!

Still can't tell if it's the punkiest sort of pop or poppiest sort of punk. Either way it works and it's not hard to remember how (or why) this was all the cool kids' favorite band back in the day.

I enjoyed it.

Pretty solid

a fever dream punk pop sweet and sour fermented surf sandwich on a sliced eyeball

Album has a lot of range from pop to experimental. They all worked well not only on their own, but also within the album. A fun and enjoyable album. 4/5

I enjoyed this from start to finish. What I find fascinating is the contrast between most of the album—raw, unpolished, with at least slightly distorted vocals—and "Here Comes Your Man." Next to songs like "Debaser" and "Tame," it sticks out like a sore thumb, all polished and radio-friendly. Personally, it's a sore thumb I enjoy, but it's especially interesting because I feel like "Where Is My Mind?" was also a bit of an outlier. Maybe each album has one? I don't know, but after listening to their first two albums I can definitely say that I'm a fan, regardless of fingers and their relative soreness.

Great album

this sounds like something that would be playing in my friends college dorm while we’re smoking some weed and talking about whatever wacky topic our minds could think of

A great rock album, although very frontloaded with some weird ass songs in the back.

I really love the just out of punk/just entering post-punk sound of this album, combined with the touches of grunge, surf rock, and other alt rock genres. Speaking of, you can especially hear the beginnings of 90s alternative sounds here. While this band has plenty of alternative content, this particular album, released in 1989, is so apparently influential, firmly lays the soundscape for so many phenomenal 90s alt bands to come, across many different 90s alternative sub-genres. This album is a noise rock album as well, so it bears mentioning that it is a very tolerable amount of noise and that label is not being used here to avoid actually making something cohesive and melodic. At 38 minutes, this album seemed to just fly by, and each song being great only made it go by faster. This album has some of my favorite Pixies songs, including "Debaser", "Here Comes Your Man", and "Monkey Gone To Heaven". But really, I'm not disappointed with a single song on this album.

Temazo Here comes your man.

Solid - never listened to the Pixies before but really liked it!

Did not find it that special when it came out. But it has grown on me since. The weirdness I did not get initially I really like today. Not an easy listen here, but give it a chance!

May give it a few more listens. Enjoyed a couple of the tracks, and appreciate how they defined the music scene in Boston in the 80’s

This album has two the greatest Pixies songs “Hey” and “Monkey gone to heaven”

Lots of great songs. A few unlistenable thrashers.

Like a greatest hits. It remains my life goal to shout Debaser at karaoke.

Wow…

Classic of indie classics. Gonna say this one is a banger

Not really my thing, but understand the reputation

Decent. Monkey Gone to Heaven is a tune

This was unexpectedly great! The word "unapologetic" comes to mind: truly a band writing and playing exactly what they feel like, diving head first into the sounds and textures they want to explore. I found a lot of the guitar work to be very interesting. It was reminiscent of early Modest Mouse and reminded me a little of Silversun Pickups (who were obviously very influenced by Pixies). Great record, I get why it gets the praise it gets!

Not bad that

Some fun variation within the punk-ey feel

I have a love hate relationship with the Pixies, but most of this album was on the love side. Specifically enjoyed "Crackity Jones", and of course the hits "Wave of Mutilation" and "Debaser"

Great album. Found it after fight club haha. Punk and grunge and rock. A great listen

Pretty interesting proto-alt/punk album that has aged pretty well

leuk some bangers

Here comes your man wat een banger. Heel goed album, goede lengte en toffe liedjes.

It was a really solid albums, it had a lot of quirks but this definitely help me understand why the pixies are so valued

Awesome album. I like this one more than Surfer Rosa.

Another group I wasn't hugely familiar with but really liked. Sort of reminded me of white stripes. Then the spotify Playlist after album was over played white stripes justifying my thought.

The Pixies best album. The album that inspired much of what became the grunge movement and on into the indie craze. 3.5/5.

Enjoyed

Pretty good album. I loved the contrast between the more melodic stuff and the harsh loud stuff and they blended it really well. Never listened to these guys before but I can totally see their influence on 90s bands.

Overall it was good. A few songs like Wave of Mutilation and Monkey Gone to Heaven stood out.

Quite catchy, a lot of good songs, however, it still needs a few listens to get to me. 7.5/10

Crazy pixies, there music scares me a bit

great record whose influence is immense fav tracks: Debaser, Tame, Monkey gone to Heaven, Hey. least fav tracks: No 13 baby, Silver.

A more electrified, unhinged Violent Femmes feel to this one. Oddly prescient of the 90s with its grungy riffs mixed on top of radio-friendly acoustic, an amalgam of all the best parts of the decade to come. My only qualm here is that a few tracks are too short to fully realize their melodic potential, but otherwise this is a great, fun listen throughout.

An up and down album with some really good songs on it like Debaser. My favorite was Here Comes Your Man.

they surprised me with this one not only was there a track about the environment but also hiring morissey for la la love you. here comes your man, hey, debaser are all classics solid album

Interesting that I got this about a month after Surfer Rosa. I was not expecting to get this album so soon. The randomness of the algorithm continues to amuse me. As I predicted a month ago, I did like this album better. Their sound is a little more developed, a little more cohesive. I already knew three songs. I really like “Here Comes Your Man” (new to me) but has anyone else noticed that it sounds a lot like REM’s “Stand”? I’m torn about whether I’d keep this on my phone and listen to it again (the difference between 4 and 5 stars for me). I guess however I feel about it tomorrow at 5:30AM will be the answer…

classic

The best of the Pixies. Best track: Here Comes Your Man

My fave of their classic first 4 albums. They mastered the quiet/loud thing which Nirvana later nicked. The tunes are ace there are 4/5 classics on the this one. (Love Wave of Mutilation) Black Francis lyrics are weird and cryptic. Essential stuff. 4

More flawed with age, but "Monkey Gone to Heaven" still gives a nostalgic chill, "Debaser" and "Here Comes Your Man" are chiming fun and "Gouge Away" a cleansing churn to finish it off.

nice 4/5

very good

An excellent follow-up to an excellent debut. I might prefer “Surfer Rosa” on a gut level but they’re very close. On some songs the band sounds like they recorded the songs before perfecting and polishing them too much, so they still have an unpredictable energy. The bass is great and drives the tone towards slightly menacing territory - so distinct, very Pixies. “Here Comes Your Man” is a personal favorite that I used to listen to on repeat in college.

It's obvious how the band and this album influenced Nirvana and Jane's Addiction. When I first put the album on, it was like I had found the missing piece to the puzzle. Because those other albums don't just suddenly appear. There has to be some evolution, right? So, what about this album? Wikipedia said that NME writers voted it the second greatest album of all time. Now that's REALLY pushing it. I thought it was good. The songs were short and to the point. "Hey" was... um, yeah. Definitely made me want to hear more, which is a good thing.

I really took a liking to Surfer Rosa and thought I might rate this one even higher given its well known songs. But after Debaser (so grungy), Wave of Mutilation (a great, great song), Here Comes Your Man (a fun one to learn on guitar), and Monkey Gone to Heaven (never really my fave) the album is a bit uneven. Up to that point in the album it has a real edgy, grungy sound (Tame and I Bleed fit well in the first half but not sure how well they stand alone). From there I find some of the songs a little weird (Crackity Jones, La La Love You, Hey, Silver). Still even in those songs you hear some great guitar riffs and rock beats. And in others on the back half they do it almost as well as the first half (No 13 Baby, There Goes My Gun, Gouge Away), reminding you why they were so important to the transition from 80s to 90s rock.

Rocking album. One of my favorite things about it is that it came out in the 1980s but doesn’t sound like an 80s album at all except for maybe the Sonic Youth influence on it. Listening to this you can hear just how many albums have been influenced by it. The guitar on “Monkey’s Gone to Heaven” reminds me of a track on The Bends. “No 13 Baby” has some of my favorite guitar and least favorite vocals on the album. I think the dichotomy there actually makes me like the track even more. I tried to listen to this album years back and it didn’t do much for me but this time around I loved it. Looking forward to checking out more of their stuff. Pixies, you get a solid 4!

On their second album the Pixies continued to be ahead of their time - so much of grunge can be traced back to their songs. I personally preferred their debut Surfer Rosa - I felt it had stronger individual songs and also a harder edge. This album is definitely a 4 though - a really good album that I'd like to keep listening to. I haven't rated the Pixies a 5 mainly because there's always a little too much screaming and feedback, but not so much for me to dislike it. I will definitely keep listening to both these albums and plan to dig into more of their discography. Favorite tracks - Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr. Grieves, No. 13 Baby, and Gouge Away.

7/10. Another solid Pixies album

Just some good ol alt rock. 8/10

Rock alternativo.

Important album!

Listened all weekend!

Good album for sure. I love the wacky and unpredictable style of vocals the Pixies always seem to use. A good amount of standout songs on the album as well. Just love their style. Favorite Songs: "Debaser", "Wave of Mutilation", "Here Comes Your Man", "Monkey Gone to Heaven"

The pixies at their best

Surprisingly nice album! Some of the songs felt like fillers with no emotions, but all the rest, with Hey at the top were really good. The album was a sweet mix of pop and rock, with some heavy moments in between. Catchy tunes plus some interesting vocal options. I will definitely come back to this album once again, probably sooner than later.

Listened to this before recommended, love it. Certain standout songs like debaser and monkey gone to heaven but half are relatively ok

Already love this album. Pixies are right up my ally of melodic punk. Very raw yet tight at the same time. Nothing beats Black Francis screeching hand in hand with the gentle back vocals of Paz.

Slappin’ record. Very in-your-face and loud, but not annoying somehow. 7/10

A few throw-aways, but mostly great and perfectly odd.

Was gooood

I had no idea I was a Pixies fan until embarking on this project. It's been a pleasant discovery. I was always aware of them and enjoyed ther more popular songs I had heard, but had enever delved deeper into album tracks. I'm not sure why. I'm glad it's being thrust upon me now.

Good stuff

yessss, when I see alt rock, this is what I wanna hear!

Great rock album with surprisingly quality production. Dips in quality a bit in the second half but definitely worth the listen for every grunge and alternative rock fan.

Fuck yeah. Love this album.

Great fun listening to this one, brought up lots of road trip memories with Chloe. Debaser is an epic unhinged start to the album, hooked me straight away, then the album just goes from bop to chaotic bop.

Almost a 5. It just has 2 or 3 tracks that I don't really vibe with, but otherwise Doolittle is a killer album with some timeless classics. The lyrics are really interesting, the sound is instantly identifiable. Love this

Bello, interessante, meglio di 'Surfer Rosa'

Many songs ring a bell. Not bad. Has the vibe of it's time.

This album did little for me at the time, as it seemed a bit of a let-down and a re-tread after their debut. Listening to it now the well-known tracks sound great. Some great tunes and I love the energy. It flagged a bit in the middle, with whatever the cost-reggae intro track was, but overall I enjoyed this a lot more than I did at the time. 3.5 stars.

Onhan tää kova, parhaat biisit huikean hienoja.

A lot of familiar songs. Good album.

Another 4.5, just below a classic. This album influenced the next decade of indie music.

I hear a direct line from this record to Cage the Elephant. Snappy post-punk rock. Melodic but rough at the same time with some slashing guitars.

An old favourite, just as much fun as it used to be

Nice record with bits that sound like new order, Neil Young and the Smiths

Great album which rarely falters.

Really good

Pretty good but a bit uneven.

great album, i love listening to an older album and realizing that this is an inspiration for a newer artist

good but i dont rly remmember lolz

Musicas que eu ouviria para viajar.

Great album

I forgot how relatively mellow Pixies actually are compared to how I keep remembering them. I generally like them, and they clearly had some influence on later bands I like more. Doolittle dragged at parts, but overall pretty good.

NERRRRDS!

In yesterday's review of Jesus and Mary Chain I said they generated some excitement but not enough to get to the next level. This Pixes album has the level of excitement that JMC did not have. This album is also better than their first.

To help me decipher the lyrics to the first song, I tracked down the short film from 1929 it refers to, Un Chien Andalou, and watched it to the end, not deterred by the slitting eyeballs scene. This led me to looking for literary references in the other songs, and there are many, especially old testament references. This led me to reading the lyrics as I listened to every song and, on a few, visiting SongMeanings and reading the #1 most-liked interpretation. This, I think, would lead me to giving higher scores to most albums (excluding ACDC and the like). Musically, there's a chasm between the quasi-hardcore, less accessible songs and a handful of hits and pop-oriented tracks like La La Love You. I'm now convinced of the genius of Black Francis. Kim Deal is also talented, as is their singing drummer. And of course, the guitars are great. I deduct 1 point since I haven't done a full lyrical deep dive on the other 369 bands we've listened to.

Pretty good! Heard it before but nice going back to it!

Nice rock album.

Pretty great example of alternative rock. One of those albums though that I'd rather remember listening to than actually listen to.

Tiptop!

Awesome vibes. Liked it Very much. Dabaser, tame, silver, hey were the best.

A good alt rock album, probably the best work by pixies.

Like, one too many songs. Otherwise tops.

20th December 2021 Listened mainly while getting ready to leave Vancouver! Finished on the plane when landing in LA to come visit guy! Really great. Grungy, hardcore whilst being melodic and sensitive.

Klassísk Pixies plata í alla staði

Seminal album from a pioneering band.

Almost. 4.5 out of 5. Great memories of seeing them tour this album.

Classic, heard a lot before. Good to great

Not as excellent as their first two releases, from the perspective of a kid who got their first album when it came out at Newbury Comics and then hero-worshipped the graphic designers of 4AD, and who then got to see Throwing Muses opening for the Pixies at the Paradise, and felt goosebumps

Enjoyed it. But no songs stayed with me after listening

Big fan of this one. Only song of theirs missing from this album that I really like is Where Is My Mind. Sad we missed them at RF

Algunas canciones melodiosas.

I've been hearing that this is almost universally beloved for a long time. Nice to finally make the time to listen. Considering how totally disappointing was Surfer Rosa, this is WAY better. A decent producer seems to make a big difference, and it sounds like someone made them rehearse everything at least a couple times. The sound of every instrument is vastly better. The subjects are weird and wonderful and make me think. It's still quite rough and grating, it's not love at first sight, but I'll definitely be able to give this a few more tries and I think it'll grow on me.

I quite like the fact that Ken Norton produced both The Pixies and Busted. (Wikipedia quite charmingly describes Busted a a punk band. O tempora, o mores...)

The songs on this that I like I REALLY like. Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Hey

its a lot but gonna try it? 2-3 stars maybe. kinda catchy. 3.5!

Lolz is o people who bought it for here r comes your man

Good album. Some really good songs on this one.

Their high point, four or five classics and only the fact that it tails off a little towards the end stops it from getting five stars

Enjoyed this album! Had some recognizable hits on it as well

It was "Debaser" that instantly dragged me in. One of those songs that could wake the dead by introducing in stages its taut, hitting-every-quaver bassline, fizzing lead, frenzied tambourine, searing rhythm guitar, and the deranged vocal with its battle cry of "I am un... CHIEN Andalusia!" Perfection which I've been returning to again and again, until it became my most played song on Spotify in 2020. The rest either hooked me just as quickly (I'm a sucker for strong melodic refrains like "Here Comes Your Man" and "Wave of Mutilation"), took a while for me to warm up to (the long cascading outro of "No 13 Baby", the slow burn of "Hey") or is still something I struggle with (the abrasive screaming all over "Tame", the tuneless chaos of "Dead"). The record strikes a great run in its mid section, filling up most of the second half with great variety, before sadly ending on a fairly shrugging note with "Silver" and "Gouge Away". Honourable mention to the underrated gem "Mr Grieves", one of my favourites for the way it restlessly jumps around in tempo and rhythm. On a first listen this would have been a 3*. It's now pushing 5, but to be fairer on some of the ones I'm hearing for the first time I'm rounding out to a 4.

Wow, the tracks on this are so short! It's a great vibe - I only knew Here Comes Your Man/Monkey Gone To Heaven before. I'm gutted that I missed out on grunge/alt while it was happening but at least I rode the Britpop wagon for all it was worth.

How is this so good?

Shaggy and cool

The last great Pixies album.

Brilliant little album with more than a handful of great tunes.

-generally solid alternative rock -nothing really stood out, but very nice -will probably give it another listen

Great band and great album!

Great album that I come back to every now and again. Standouts are Debaser, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven

Really good, nothing more to say.

Great album

Decent

Nota: 6/10

Heard it. Great.

Closest we have had to a 5 star album so far, some fantastic songs but a little drop in quality in the second half.

While the other Pixies album was a solid 8, this is more of a 7.5. It had more tunes that I knew on it, but preferred the last. Still, my roundup rule keeps it at 4/5.

Great tunes - I prefer Surfer Rosa but this is excellent.

"Don't know about you But I am un chien andalusia" (Debaser) "What's that floatin' in the water? Oh, Neptune's only daughter" (Mr. Grieves) El resto del disco sin más, pero Debaser es tan locurote que le voy a poner cuatro estrellas igualmente.

its pretty good

Better than I remember

'Debaser' - absoluter BÄNGÄ, sondtrack von SKATE3. Außerdem liebt auch Stingo "the voice of AEV" diesen song (#Qualitätssiegel) Insgesamt ne runde Sache. A weng gschrei, bissi punkig und geht ins Ohr. Gehard Abfahrt!

Love it!

Original 80s/90s garage sound. Not for everyone but lead the way for modern artsy/need rock/alternative

an awesome album

This is the punk I was expecting, since the early 70s stuff was way too obtuse and angry for me! Or maybe this is early 70s, and I just like the Pixies a lot more? It's calmer, at least.

Fuck yeah

Nostalgia jam

A transformative alt-rock album; sound is very ahead of its time and the future bands that were influenced by it are so palpable.

Really enjoyed it. Quite varied sounds and nice funky beats. Was going to five stars but the last couple tracks were a bit meh

closer to a 4.5

Obviously inspired and inspirational, and no doubt a nailed-on 5 to many. But I don't really connect to this as much as similar-ish indie bands from that era. Give me Pavement or Dinosaur Jr instead!

Liked here comes your man song

Certainly an influential record for those in the 90s alternative music scene as well as people inspired by it. From Nirvana to Olivia Rodrigo, the Pixies have left their mark across generations with their first few records. It's not quite what I'm after personally, but there's absolutely no denying the impact Doolittle's had, and while I may prefer to listen to one of the bands the Pixies had inspired, this one's still pretty goooooood. Standouts: Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Gouge Away

Had a good time with this but it was too many days ago and I forgot to put any notes down at that time. I liked it more than Surfer Rosa though (complimentary in both cases)

I think I liked this a little more than Surfer Rosa, but maybe that's recency bias. Still just something good to listen to for me but not too much to stand out either.

Wasn't a stand out.

<3 me gusta mucho “hey”.

Repetitive, atonal, cryptic, whiny...all words that reappear in reviews of albums I don't care for, and this is one of them. A few tracks (like "Crackity Jones" and "La La Love You") add a little variety to the mix, but overall it's just Not My Thing.

Se me hizo monótono pero bien.

it's a standard pixies album that mostly sounds okay, has some shiny highlights, but is not that much above the average of many other noise alt rock bands' output.

Amazing

A bit monotonous. Just okay.

3.5. Not really my type of music with the way Francis sings, but it has very high highs. I guess, being honest, i liked the “radio-friendly” songs more like La La Love You and Here Comes Your Man. I do see why people love it so much, though - it’s just not something I would listen to again, minus a few songs

liked - hey, monkey gone to heaven, here comes your man

pretty cool album. a lot of the vocals and instrumentals are out there, and while i'm not a huge fan of every song, for the most part doolittle is an enjoyable listen. favorite track: wave of mutilation

Neither great nor terrible. Good rock. Didn’t know they did “Here Comes Your Man,” but all the other songs were easy to listen to. Solid music for driving.

not my kind of jam but still listenable

Here comes your man is a fun track the rest don’t really match its tone though

Ganske fornuftigt.

They certainly have an amazing talent for writing songs that are a catchy as f*ck, and those guitars rock hard Many a sweaty nightclub evening in the 90's was spent jumping around to Pixies tunes But hearing the lyrics again now, why should I care about the Monkey? And wtf is Andalusia? Wave of Mutilation - really? I think I've moved on . . .

felt very experimental, like a mix of every genre and their take on it. certainly good but it wasn't my cup of tea

The last of the 3 Pixies albums on this list. With nearly 500 albums I've heard since my last Pixies album, my opinion hasn't changed. Still no fan, still doesn't do much for me.

war nice bissle punkkk

Lots of screaming, haha. Background noise, not very thought provoking. Leah - 4/7 Leprechauns Austin - 3.5/7 Leprechauns

I really really want to like the Pixies, but man I just can’t stand the singing

Really wanted to like this more than I did because I know it's a pretty iconic album. Some of the songs had good beats, but some were pretty grating on me. Debaser & Here Comes Your Man were standouts. (3)

One of the few bands that I listened to and purchased before their Replacements-Big Star-V.U. like rise in popularity as non-stars who influenced bigger bands. My coolness quotient will take a hit when I say their impact is greater than my enjoyment. They distill a number of styles into a fairly original blend, although I often prefer their influences. I hear The Cure’s guitars on “Debaser.” Whenever Black Francis launches into a near scream, it recalls Pere Ubu. The bouncy songs like “Here Comes Your Man” mirror The Velvet Underground’s Motown meets NYC grime. Unfortunately, not a single song is highly pleasurable, nor memorable. They exist in my mind from particular moments when I heard them, not because I was ever totally into the group. On the less conventional songs, Black Francis’ voice is shrill rather than the scary abrasiveness of similar singers. The guitar sounds lack strength in a similar manner. When The Pixies play more crafted songs, I started comparing them to The Breeders, and I could see why Kim Deal’s next band had the bigger hits. The Breeders’ riffs, singing and lyrics pack more punch and fun than anything here. Standards and expectations impact reviews. Doolittle is a fine record, but does not sit high in my canon.

I had mixed feelings about this one and it was hard figuring out how to rate it. I admired their revolutionary and experimental style but I am not sure it worked for me. It was hard figuring out their point of view. Some of their songs had a very hard metal vibe, but then they would do something that felt 70’s rock. If I had to describe them I would call it Folk Rock Metal. It was an interesting concept but I am not sure it really came together.

I feel like I need to give this one a more focused listen, but I thought it was just okay. Nothing wrong with it, just nothing to get me terribly excited about either.

Buen álbum, rock puro y duro.

It's got exactly 4 good songs, and the rest of the album is filler.

It was good

i liked some songs a lot, some songs not at all. they all had a very similar vibe.

Was pretty good I would give it a 3 out of 5, but nothing really stands out, I drive to it to work.

15 songs The songs being so short they all kind of blend into one another. Quite a good listen as an album, but I don't know how much I would enjoy each individual song otherwise

It's the pixies

These uncs in their mid 40s complaining about trap and mumble rap while listening to this. Some songs do go hard though. Favorite Songs: Hear Comes your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, La La Love You.

Standouts Mr. Grieves

vocals weren't really my thing, nor the lyrics. but damn the atmosphere is pretty good, some of the songs were still pretty fun too ! like I Bleed, i really liked the backing vocals and guitar for that one. dead too, that one's fun overall, not something i'd listen to regularly, but im reasonably content with trying it anyways

Not my favorite Pixies’ album but a good record nonetheless. Lots of classics here.

kinda repetitive but i liked it 3.9/5

Familiar with this, listened to it before. Not my favourite but I do like some of the moments in this album. Debaser is probably my favourite. I just find it hard to imagine a moment where I would choose to put this album on

Low 3, the early stuff just sounds like noise, but it improved as you went through the album, with the back 1/3 in particular being quite enjoyable

There are sounds I like especially noisier ones but they barely add up to songs. Liked Songs: Gouge Away, Monkey Gone to Heaven & Here Comes Your Man

3.5 / 5 Best Song: Here Comes Your Man Worst Song: Silver Weirdest Song: Tame Honorable Mention: Wave of Mutilation Pretty weird but ultimately a fun album with a great mixture of genres from punk, grunge, surf rock, and reggae.

#14 I was excited to give this a listen, knowing how revered Pixies are and having only heard a couple of their big hits before. To be honest though, it fell kind of flat for me. It wasn't bad, but after two listens it just kind of ran together and nothing was memorable. There are a few good songs, but nothing wowed me. I can definitely see the influence this had on the alt rock scene that evolved in the years following, and it does sound ahead of its time for a 1989 release. 3.5/5

Si bien hay temazos con here comes your man, honestamente no me copó como album, los pixies no son lo mio

I liked it. My personal favorite think about Pixies is that they influenced Nirvana. If the day ever comes when I want to explore this genre and era more I’ll remember to come back to Pixies.

Silver

Enkele bangers omgeven door mid.

Doolittle was definitely an enjoyable album but it would easily get surpassed by Bossanova a year later. It definitely does feel like these guys influenced a lot of what The Smashing Pumpkins would go on to do especially with Black Francis having a very similar voice to Billy Corgan and that is one aspect i quite liked alongside the heavy sounding music. There are definitely a lot of really strong tracks on offer but at the same time, there are some pretty lame ones here as well. I still think it went at a decent pace even if not all the songs here were winners. I still definitely had an enjoyable time with this album and would definitely give it a high 3 but i'm just not feeling it the same way i did with Bossanova Best Song: Gouge Away Worst Song: Mr. Grieves

Fun punk.

pretty good, I'm not really into rock but I liked Doolittle. Fav songs, Wave of Mutilation, and I Bleed.

One song is pretty fast and fine, but others are just bad. Sounds like those country classics, but not in country music. This is just like cheerfulcore, that makes it boring and basic. Don't hate it, but wouldn't listen even as background, maybe some time, not too much.

I’m not a Pixies fan. A couple of iconic songs, but not much more.

Good album, certain songs just dawned on me. I like here comes your man, crackity jones, and i bleed, and la la love you. This more like a 3.5.

Day 36 — Pixies — Doolittle (1989) Listened: May 7–9, 2026 Genre: Alternative Rock / Indie Rock / Post-Punk Vibe: Visceral and dynamic — quiet intimacy exploding into noise, hooks buried in chaos, Black Francis screaming poetry over Kim Deal's locked-in bass. Highlights: ★ Here Comes Your Man • Monkey Gone to Heaven • La La Love You • No. 13 Baby Impression: A massive step up from Bossanova — easier to get into and more rewarding throughout. The punk and surf energy with a sixties pop melodic sensibility clicked immediately. Here Comes Your Man sounds like a direct ancestor of Rancid. The whispering-to-screaming dynamic is striking and you can hear exactly where Nirvana borrowed from. This is the Pixies album that makes sense to me. Rating: 3.0/5 Keep songs? Yes Revisit album? Yes

Pretty decent, good length and some nice sounding tunes

there's something suss about black francis. seems like he's trying to hide his affluent background and he's more of a tourist. He's not downtrodden, his real name is Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV. His dad was friends with captain beefheart. this is a kid trying so hard to live up to expectations, who is talented and hard working. But this is not a kid who knows whereof he speaks.

Alright. Seemed like it should have been from the early 70s not the late 80s. Quite liked it but don’t think there was a lot of variation or depth in it.

I tried to give this album a chance but I have always hated the pixies and I guess I always will. just a bunch of sound pollution. 3/10 rating

Kan dit wel waarderen. Muziek erg vet, zanger soms een beetje schreeuwerig.

A diverse musical approach of power driven music and minimalistic lyrical notings.

É bom, mas não me prendeu.

It was alright, but half the songs actively made me so angry that I had to skip them. The other half was good 👍. My favorites were Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, and There Goes My Gun. Overall, I would give it a 3.3/5!

It's fun! Very 2000s rock without being too dad rock.

I appreciate that stylistically this album was hugely important for those indie bands that came after and rode the wave of mainstream in the early 90s. I can hear a lot of Nirvana Nevermind and others but Doolittle itself didn’t quite grab me with the exception of the excellent monkey gone to heaven It just didn’t a hook song to elevate the album such as a teen spirit/ come as you are.

Quite good. Songs from No 13 Baby and under are way better and pretty interesting. Very nice guitars! The guitar in Hey is heavenly.

I was around when the Pixies came out but they somehow got by me and I never realized how popular they were until just before they broke up. Once again it was probably a case of them being more of a college rock band and never being able to hear them on mainstream radio. By the time I got to them I had heard a multitude of other bands and ended up finding the Pixies to be a bit tame compared to where my tastes had gone by that point. Listening to it now I do still find this a bit tame but now in my later years it seems that there’s some sort of a maturity to their sound and that it seems to be well formed from the beginning. I do enjoy this but it doesn’t get me totally pumped however I have a feeling this might be one of those slow burn bands where things start clicking after many listens. Definitely not offended by them and I don’t mind that I’ll be listening to a couple more albums by them coming up on this project.

Listened to the whole album. I liked some songs like "Hey" a lot.

It’s a decent album, I like some of the songs on here but the vocals in some parts just sound weird to me and it’s kinda off-putting. I would’ve enjoyed this album more if the vocals didn’t sound so strange. Most enjoyable part of the album was the instrumentals. Was honestly expecting more, I thought it’d be at least a 4/5 but I’m gonna have to give it a solid 3/5.

Okay, but didn’t wow me.

Love parts of the album, can’t handle the screaming

This band will never be my cup of tea, but great to get exposed to this complete album since I only knew the hits previously.

Doctor.

- not the most cohesive to me . but maybe i just need more time with it - favorites: here comes your man, hey - rating: 2.5/5

first listen its okay

i guess this type of screaming just isn’t my vibe

Damn, this was worse than I expected, only liked 2 of the songs. I never had listened to the actual album, So I was suprised to hear so much screaming

beginning track, debaser, sounds something to segway into a indie film. very loud. makes me wanna do a disney channel knee dance. beginning hi hat pattern off on tame reminds me of 70s funk (see dave grohl talking about gap band here). i bleed. chick sound like she's underwater. really like it. these boys are alright. Here comes to your man. A little Beatles, rockabilly esque. shout out to bands who do this (the muffs, love kim shattuck) the section 1:21 mins in dead. that's it there was a guy... who ate shawarma (lullaby by Shawn queued in). strings, definitely a big budget mr grieves. the beginning sounds like sublime take psychedelic when listening to la la love you

Debaser just feels like a rant but he's really going for it in his lyrical shouting. I think he'd be really good on broadway. Makes me feel like Pixies were heavily inspired by David Bowie. As we get further down the album it feels a bit more hard rock than anything until we get to Here Comes Your Man which just reminds me of nothing but driving down to the beach with my family listening to classic rock radio. Also there's something about a dead monkey (pictured). It's alright. Not my favorite but not the worst thing 1001albums has thrown at me. Solid 3/5 IMO.

Here’s another band that I probably would have really liked if I heard them at the time. Now, it’s too abrasive and frenetic for me, though in general I appreciated the music and vocals. I read Black Francis is known for his lyrics but, as usual, I really didn’t catch them on a first - and not especially close - listen.

couple songs keep it from a 5

Lowkey punchy.

One of those albums that no-one speak poorly about. Or that people are scared to say anything about. It's an icon of modern serious guitar post-rock. And I just don't get it. I don't actively hate it, I just find it it unfocused and rushed. There, I said it. Oh, the taste-police are now hammering on my door.

First few tracks were enjoyed

Decent album but not quite up my street. Here Comes Your Man was definitely the best and my favourite on the album

Your favorite band's favorite band, as they say. Never really gave them a proper listen until now, but I can see where this reputation comes from. This record sounds like it was recorded in 1994 instead of 1989, and a million bands from the 90s and beyond sound like them. Obviously Kurt Cobain was a fan. I also hear some Mother Mother here and there? Unfortunately I'm not rating on the influence a record had, but how much I enjoyed it personally. I liked it, but didn’t love it.

Not bad

good for a dissociation walk in the fall or chill gym sesh Faves: Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man, Mr. Grieves, There Goes My Gun

pretty good

This was a really weird experimental album that wasn’t totally for me but I like how werid it is so I’m giving it a low 3.

mostly noisy, not very much to my tastes, but not the worst. The tracks "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "There Goes My Gun" aren't so bad.

This album was fun; his vocals are very expressive. Debaser and Gouge Away were my standouts. Overall, a 6.4/10. Solid but I dont know if I'd listen to it again.
