I like this series of records. An interesting artist
Some very lovely moments on this, a fun listen. I feel like I need more Sufjan in my life.
I don't know how I feel about it. Certain parts were good. Other parts felt like they were trying way too hard. I don't need to listen to it again, so I guess I'd lean a little more in the negative direction.
Now this was truly bizarre. I had some interest in it since I live in Illinois and the music was quite curious as well as the themes of several songs. I might actually return to this to listen more closely to some of the lyrics. Weirdly fun!
Chicago is magnificent.
Dooodeeeee dooo dooo dooo
Somewhat enjoyable
Really interesting - I don’t love it, but there are a variety of styles and interesting songwriting techniques.
People hated this when Van Dyke Parks did it, so I guess that’s progress. Not my cup of tea, but I definitely admire the cheek and the intricacy of construction on display here.
3 i want to like it more than i do
The quenticential sound of the 90s. I haven't listened to this album in about ten years and forgot how good it was. You don't get many concept albums in this age of single-driven music. 3.5/5
Some great songs with great storytelling. Probably could have been trimmed by half a dozen songs though, it dragged in parts.
Was interesting even when it was weird. Think I enjoyed!
Man this album is long...
singing aba serial killers is not the vibe
They really do sound like the Stone Roses, and I haven't seen that on our list yet.
Strange album. Lyrically, pretty heavy and complicated, and it certainly seems the focus with some less interesting folk music holding it all together. I listened to this while driving across Illinois... didn't help too much. The most interesting items are the variety of words chosen to rhyme with Decatur as well as a song (that is as successful as they are on the album) where the core of it is spelling the word Illinois. Unusual and interesting.
I think I like the idea of his states project more than I really care for the music itself
Interesting with some really fun songs.
Too long for such similar songs, seemed like some cult shit.
This was alright, kind of slow and empty, but in a cool, artistic way. I did have higher expectations for this, and they were not really met. Overall, it is just everage.
Not my favorite album by Sufjan. I find it pretty annoying actually. Bit it's still Sufjan.
Some of the songs were really cool, but the end of the album dragged out a bit for me. 6/10
C'est presque de l'ambient.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate all double albums, there are a few I've given five stars to, but just because you can make a 75 minute album doesn't mean you should. There's some great stuff here, "Jacksonville," "Chicago" and. "The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts" stand out. I'm gonna have to give "John Wayne Gacy, Jr" another listen or two; Stevens says we're all capable of what Gacy did, speak for yourself dude. I know this album is beloved by a lot of people, I just like some other of his stuff better, "Carrie & Lowell" is his real masterpiece, here he could've used an editor or even made "Illinois Part 2."
a few good tunes and lots of meandering, like his other work
I feel in listening to this album, I'm missing a lot of context regarding very, very specific references to the state of Illinois. This album gives off a carnival vibe to me, perhaps it's the vast array of instrumentation and whimsical nature of it all. But my god, it's such a looooonnnngggg album! And the song titles aren't lacking in length either! Best: Jacksonville Worst: Come On! Feel the Illinoise!" (Part I: The World's Columbian Exposition – Part II: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream) 2.5 Stars.
Nice sound but low energy
Sometimes I like Sufjan Stevens a lot, other times I get a bit bored of him. Giving this a good listen, it's definitely an interesting album with some great moments. It could have benefited from a good edit to get it down to 45 minutes of phenomenal music as opposed to 74 minutes of hit and miss music. Overall though, good stuff, unique and interesting. 3 stars.
Pleasant enough I guess but way too long
Really enjoyed a fresh inheard album. Upbeat, makes for lovely chill music. Happy calm songs. Favorites, Chicago and Jacksonville with nice tempo.
Opening song a lil boring but this second track feelin a bit epic The beginning of the Third song sounds like Charlie brown, BRUH THIS THIRD SONG SLAPS Heavy castelia city vibes from this album Wth this track is called John wayne gacy jr. i remember watching a serial killer doc about that guy, spooky
Interesting sound, esp when I only know Sufjan from compositional works rather than lyrical. Nonetheless it still sounded like him and there were some certain bangers on here.
Whimsical
I was pleasantly surprised. I actually enjoyed it.
First off, the album cover seems to have the title Come on feel the Illinoise (thinking ‘noise’ is a little play on words). The title song Part 1 was interesting. Dug Jacksonville. Was hoping for some lyrics for Mary Todd. Found myself bopping along to Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Step-Mother. Not sure why but Chicago was emotional for me. Enjoyed the plucking on Casimir Pulaski Day. Loved some of the mish mashed of jumbled lyrics in The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out To Get Us! ‘Oh how I meant to tease him, Oh how I meant no harm, Touching his back with my hand I kiss him…’. Don’t care for zombie movies too much and apparently song titles with Zombies in them either. Only 40 seconds long but the title Let’s hear that string part again, because I don’t think they heard it all the way out in Bushnell gave me a chuckle. Not sure who Emmanuel is from The Seer’s Tower and not one of my favorites. Last 5 tunes not much to talk about, some interesting lyrics in The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders but the music sounded like something out a Charlie Brown special. Now let’s talk about John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Can we all agree just friggin’ creepy! I know we can’t just sweep everything under the rug and look away but I don’t know if a song needs to be written about such a thing. Also, what’s with the lyrics ‘…and on my best behavior, I am really just like him, look beneath the floor bords, for the secrets I have hid’. We all have secrets we don’t share with the world, but nothing like JWC Jr. Hope not anyway because he was just fucked. I don’t understand why someone like this would be on death row for 14 fucking years. Sentenced to death on Thursday? Should be dead by Friday! At first, I thought yeah, no, 2 stars. Maybe when I was younger and little more melancholy and kookier than I am now, I totally would have been into it. But it grew on me and I can appreciate the eclectic of it, and there are a lot of deep underlying meanings I’m too naïve to fully understand. Although definitely got some of it. But the album grew on me. At one point I was thinking maybe even 4 stars, but the last 5 tunes dragged it down to a 3. Again, if there were half stars, would have been 3.5. Added to my library though and I may have to give it another go even.
Not really my cup of tea but an interesting listen. Certainly a masterpiece of a concept album, I feel like I watched a movie about Illinois. John Wayne Gacy made me pause both times I played it thru. Loved the orchestral sounds & esp the trumpet on this album!
i've spent time, on and off, in this state, and in the big city in particular. most of it i liked well enough at the time. the song chicago is easy to like, of course - and oh boy was i surprised, seeing the name of the very next track on the album, that THIS guy, of all people, was covering big black (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erquHwc8f0c). i must confess to feeling slightly disappointed to learn it was a different song entirely. anyway, this one gets another...y'know, fine.
This album has a lot of feeling... At first I was worried I would not like it at all but after a couple songs I settled into the mind of the artist.
A bit slow and gentle for my taste. I'd struggle to be able to sing any of the tunes. The arrangements and instrumentation were nice though.
not really my thing and to be honest I found it a bit boring, but it's fine
I'm questioning the quality of my taste. iI was nice, but I just struggled to really enjoy it, didn't finish it because I wanted a different vibe.
Occasionally irritating
'The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts': WOW! ***
Good song writer. Not really into it.
Experimental, cool but hard to listen from start to finish
Children's show melodies with nonsense lyrics. Meh.
It's fine - not my style.
Was mich zB immer wieder überrascht, sind die Steve-Reich-Zitate, z.B. deutlich hörbar in "Out of Egypt, ...". Also ja: ganz schön ist das schon.
Zzzzz
"The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts" har några instick av mer upptempo elgitarr och trummor vilket gör lyssningen mer dynamisk - fler sådana rockiga inslag hade höjt betyget! Bäst producerad är den mörkare "They Are Night Zombies...", vars lite rockigare approach hörs direkt i basslingan i introt. Spyr dock på låttiteln. Bästa låt: They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back from the Dead!! Ahhhh!
OK, from 10 seconds in you're thinking 'this is a concept album'. Really needs heavy focus and listening. There is a lot going on, and need to revisit and reassess. Not sure if i'm been harsh or overly generous.
Some great moments but about twice as long as it should have been
Sufjan Steven's fifth album is about all things Illinois - a Midwest state in the US. As an indie rock/folk album it has a specific sound that is warm, soothing, and fun. The lyrics are beautiful and show that Sufjan is a great writer. The musical arrangements were over the top most of the time, meaning the songs had an orchestra type vibe to them. This album wasn't just recorded by a single band, but by many people playing lots of instruments. I really enjoyed this unique album and it was a calming start to my day.
I tried this album out back in the day and wasn't a huge fan (other than the instant classic "Chicago"). I've grown to really love his more recent music since then and was excited to revisit this. Sadly, it still didn't quite do it for me.
It was ok
Chill and introspective. Kind of odd. recognized one song
A lot of people love Mr Stevens but I don't really get it. There's a couple of good songs and ideas here but generally I'm not fussed. Also I really hate the long song names thing, literally just done for the sake of it and to make people think they are witty and talk about the long songs names like I am now.
Interesting. Not bad, but not really good either (or at least not my thing). I could see this growing on me but not too interested in giving it the chance.
Lugnt melodiskt
To me the cover of the album also has something to say about it, and this one so incredibly hard to look at that I have to bump the score down a little. And I have personally absolutely zero affiliation with Illinois and couldn't even tell you if it's closer to the west or the east coast in North America. It is quite a beautiful sounding album though, but with such intricate orchestrations and lyrics, and titles that you can barely read, it's hard for me to grasp what feelings Sufjan Stevens was going for, and trying to portray, through just one day of listening. 3\5 but might've changed it if I got to know it, and if you could do that on here.
I've heard this album Maybe dozens of times. I don't understand how some artists I love, admire this guy. He seems so College radio.
pretty good. reminds me of badly drawn boy for some reason. Good songwriting, good broad production. I like the horns etc Like the softness of the voice
Better than I expected. Didn’t pay attention to lyrics, and his voice bores me, but the songs, arrangements. Etc, are quite enjoyable, varied, complex. Is prog-indie-hipster a thing?
Ok alt singer-songwriter.
A little annoyed to have to listen to this whole album because it was prett long and I’m not a huge fan of his. But I’m glad I did, there are some classics on here, and there is no doubt that he makes beautiful music, his vocal style just misses a bit for me. Found some other greats of his off the radio ssssion though.
I enjoyed this for a Monday, it was very chilled and sounded like it should be over a movie. Not too sure I get why it's on this list
Sounds like every other Sufjan Stevens album.
Pleasant background music for working, reading, etc.
i think i tried some songs by this artist a couple years ago and it wasnt a vibe, lets see now. okay its longgg. interesting song titles. hmm this piano so far, i predict this will be boring. his voice is okay. another whispery type but its better than the whiny ones. lyrics are well written but i realllyyy dont care about the topics. i really liked the instrumental only tracks though and i love long songs with parts so track 20 was a win minus the chorus... the last instrumental track was cute. so, im done: it was quite pleasant overall but at times i was put off by the lyrics and the rest of the time it didnt make me feel anything except maybe calm?? it was pretty interesting. i doubt i'll come back to it but i think it was pretty good still.
Marching band folk music for people who like Ben Folds and Ben Gibbard.
i see he likes his instruments (especially trumpets) (so do i), these song titles are so unique i love them, each song tells a story perfectly i could write scenarios to these, i will listen to this album once again with my full attention on it closing my eyes
Album is over an hour long and most songs have long, zany titles.
Sounds like it might be interesting.
One of the most up and down albums I've had thus far. Some songs were so beautiful that they could take me to another place, while others were annoying and prattled on, or were straight up filler. Favorite songs were Jacksonville and Chicago, in that order.
3/5 there are some happy/interesting songs in this album, but...
Good album if a bit too long
This album was nothing at all like I expected it to be. That album art has a lot going on and I thought it was going to be a weird funky album but instead I found an indie-pop sound and I enjoyed it. The sound is really smooth and calming and I really liked most of it. My favourite tracks from the album: John Wayne Gacy Jr. Was my favourite. The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts, a cute tribute to Superman was a cute little song. The Seer's Tower.
Sleepy hipster shit but solid
Very pleasant, would listen to again. Want to give it 3.5
it was alright
Calming background music. I think I used to listen to this while studying in law school. Wonder how Sufjan’s ambition to record 50 albums named after all the US states is going?......
On reconnais ANDY shauf
Bien
Feel the Illinoise' por ejemplo.
Not bad, but nothing that I loved or that really caught my attention musically
It was nice, though I didn't feel like the album had as much variety as I'd like
Eclectic mix that sounds great in the background. I really wanted to love the album, but could never find time to power through it. Not sure if that means the album is no good or if I'm just too simple.
nice. conheci a terrivel historia de john wayne..
This was a nice listen, there's a lot of different kinds of song going on that keep the interest up, though it did start flagging here and there. It was easy to listen to, required no thought, and was quite relaxing.
I enjoyed the instrumentals more than the lyrics
Unexpectedly chill stuff. Liked it very much.
Used to like this album around the time i first went to university, chicago is a great song the rest of the album is a bit too long and off beat for me now a days.
Helt ok men på tok för långt.
Pretty musically complex and proficient but just not my thing
fun album, good lyricism ,nothing super special though
sounds like badly drawn boy, also the whole 50 states of albums was a bit of a marketing gimmick
Hienoja melodioita ja sitten taas vähintäänkin outoa menoa. Haastava levy kuunnella.
There was a lot going on. I think Sufjan got better with age
Pretty good
Enjoyed it but it’s a bit slow for me and thought it went on for way too long
Fine folk pop like album, some songs feel the same with nothing interesting, however there are some standout hits that some people might found enjoyable
A hipsters dream.
I like the guy but album-wise it’s hit or miss. Or maybe I am more into songs of his than his albums.
I always thought Sufjan Stevens would be doing retro indie rock'n'roll, and I had always pictures him to look like a young Elvis, or at least Mark Ronson ... so I was completely unprepared for whatever this is. It has its charme, and I really like the 3rd song, but overall it is too much of an abstract mess (read: "concept work") to be enjoyed as an album.
I listened to it a bit and I must say that I pretty much enjoyed songs with only instruments. I wasn't expecting this kind of music from the album. I can't really rate it because I just don't listen music like this.
Wtf is this cover. I like the vibe though. Okay, I kinda lied. I don't like it, I'm sorry.
2/50
Kind of intersting but feels like it takes a long time to do nothing. The compositions/ instrumentations are cool.
Some good stuff on here but I just hate the twee vibe
Felt much longer than 1h13m. Would've given it 3* if it was shorter.
An album that simply doesn't need to exist. Never needs replayed. Deserves to fade to nothing. It doesn't feel like anything new or interesting, and it's far too long too. Would have been twice as good at half its length.
I’m all over the place on this one. If I were born ten years later, I could see myself thinking that this is genius and have listened the shit out of this album when I was in college. There are parts that are interesting and build well that I can still appreciate now. But the whole thing is just so twee. The song titles are pretentious. Some of the songs sound like they are being played on toy store instruments. It just puts me off the whole endeavor.
If brunch was an album. It's pleasant, easy listening, but it never reaches great heights or gives you much. I liked it as background music but I wouldn't put it on to listen to.
Listen to it on Friday and can’t remember anything about. It didn’t stick with me.
the most twee thing i've ever heard but i didn't haaate it it's not interesting or varied enough to get away with being this long tho
I don’t know what to say about this album. It left me perplexed. I’ll give it 2.
I can totally see why some people will love this but for me it dragged in a lot of places, I'm not into that sound, and maybe only one completely solid track in Jacksonville
Nice music to fall asleep to.
too instrumental idk
Too folky and care free sounding for my liking.
A bit twee
Good instrumentals but a little slow for me, unique sound though!
I'll revisit this album to hear more of the Illinois stories
I remember when this came out and I didn't like it then so I ignored it. Point of order: I don't really care for baroque pop. Too many notes, as the saying goes. This coming up gives me a chance to listen with fresh ears and guess what, I still don't like it. It's a buffet of the mid 2000s sound and it's pretty technically accomplished, which is probably why it was so well received. BUT! of course the but! It grates on me. First, it's self-consciously twee and wimpy, shit I just hate. I'm reminded of Orson Welles' quote about Woody Allen being arrogant because of his timidity. "He hates himself, he loves himself, a very tense situation." Describes a lot of this album. Part of this reveals itself in the lyrics and breathless delivery, but also in the songs that are supposed to sound kinda ramshackle (Decatur, Casimir Pulaski day) that ring so incredibly hollow given how tight the rest of this stuff is. Pisses me off in its groveling at the alter of authentic emotional exposure while being so inauthentic So I'm not the target audience, though I can respect the musicianship. But then there's the music - it doesn't go anywhere! It's a shaggy dog story! The song titles are long, the album is long, the motifs are long and it always just peters out. Fuck me, it gets stale. I hear a lot of stuff from the 2000s, but in incomplete phrases and it just makes me want to listen to something else. How can something so competent miss the mark? I dunno, seems to hit it for other people. For me? What a drag. This isn't as bad as the 2 I'm giving it (again, musically, it's on solid ground), but it's so incredibly not for me that I can't give it the coward's 3.
I don't know why this album is even on this list. It's an insult to all elevators. I'm only giving it to sorry because they know how to play their instruments at least.
Very belle and Sebastian- not my thing
1,5
Endless.
So boring
He has a pleasant voice, and the instrumentation sounds carefully arranged. I have not heard his other stuff, but to me this one lacks hooks or it’s too difficult to distinguish one from song from the next. It just didn’t grab me. However, I feel like there’s more there and I need to spend more time with it and the lyrics and themes etc. I did hear too much religious preachiness, which knocks it down a star for me.
Can’t get into this album
His voice sounds like he’s about to be Me Too’ed
Very unique album - In my honest opinion, this is a very fun and new sounding album to me however it felt a tad dragged out with a total of 20+ tracks which could be overwhelming to new listeners Best song - Casmir Pulaski day or John Wayne Gacy, Jr
Illannoying
It was truly beautiful but not for me
An interesting collection of songs. The songs are simplistic and at times the lyrics seemed to be whatever the vocalist was seeing at the time of singing with no eloquence or elaboration, just repetition. …and the song titles would support that theory. The arrangements included a number of different instruments (trumpet, banjo, violin, etc..) and I was impressed with that, but overall this was a sub par listen.
Parece el soundtrack de una película. Está bueno, pero no hay nada especial. Tiene relleno con pistas sin letras.
Cool, this album. I know Sufjan Stevens is a well-respected artist among the people who really know their music, with this widely being considered his best album. I also know that this album cover originally had Superman on it, who was evidently removed from later issues of the album. After looking it up, the original album cover was released without authorisation from DC and somehow made it through an entire record label without anyone raising an eyebrow. Seems like the legal department went out to lunch. I honestly don't know what they were thinking. The label either threw Superman in there with reckless abandon or they somehow walked into the biggest, most avoidable rake known to man. In any case, Superman is wasted on this album cover. It looks kind of ugly. Enough bloviating about shit which doesn't matter. I have no clue what genre of music Sufjan Stevens belongs to. I'd reflexively go with indie folk when taking into account the year of release and singer-songwriter status, but the artwork makes me think of something less pretentious and minimal. I'll hedge my bets on a mellow rock album with a prominent psychedelic influence and/or a heavy emphasis on digital effects. Here goes. Indie folk. I'm such a fucking idiot, DOOD. I was right on the money with my prediction, yet I changed it regardless. This was a vapid listen. Stevens is clearly the successor to Elliott Smith with his hushed vocal style and relaxed songwriting, which is a sound I'm immensely apathetic towards. Fortunately, this album is more than just a boring vocal performance, as the instrumentals have some life to them. The horns have an interesting sound when layered on top of another and played in that strained sound. The country banjos add a nice, if unremarkable finish to these songs and the acoustic guitars have an archetypical, if vacuous, folk sound. The other embellishments are fine, if unremarkable, though that's about where my praises for this album end. The music is competent and listenable on the whole, but man if it doesn't overstay its welcome. The sound and style of this album can adequately be described as nondescript, which makes me want to kick this album's teeth in when looking at how much time it demands of me. I'd gotten my fill from this music at around 20 minutes in, with the rest of this album being a complete haze. Overall, this album was a one trick pony and an incredibly dull listen. I don't need to check the book for this album. As I've mentioned in some of my other reviews, indie folk was a prominent genre in the mid-to-late 2000s, with it appearing to have had somewhat of an influence on early-2010s pop music. Given that this is likely the most prized album from this specific time/genre combination, I'm favourable to its inclusion. Sufjan Stevens could probably do with two list albums given his track record with the critics, now that I think of it. For the time being, however, I cosign this inclusion.
Not my style
Fine for what it is... but what it is is same-y indie mope with a pretentious affect, didn't hate it as much as that sounds like, but I don't know when I'd choose it over something else
Fun but long
Good music words not so good
i was hoping this was gonna be a great album because i am a sucker for singer songwriters, but it just didn’t stand out as anything special at all :(
Dull. Dull. Dull.
I found this album to be incredibly boring, didn't offend, just didn't entertain.
A real struggle to listen to. I enjoyed the first 2 or 3 songs- a compliment to his impressive and well-done song writing- however hearing the same song a further 19 times made Illinois a difficult listen. I understand the love for Steven’s as a song writer, and do not discredit his work such as Carrie & Lowell, however Illinois lacks the ability to pull on the heart strings like Carrie, and leaves you waiting for a big finale… for an hour and a half. We see many long albums that can keep you drawn in and awaiting the final few tracks, however here Stevens left me bored by 30 minutes, and nearly unable to finish the record by an hour. For such an interesting concept, I wished Stevens could have delivered with interesting music, though he failed to do so. Overall an unenjoyable listen, with hints of creative writing, but for the broader experience, left me wanting something that was never delivered.
Cool music, but not quite my kind of vocals (too folky)
eh, cool in theory but i dont think i liked it
It was okay, didn't finish it
I don't know if I'm doing this guy a disservice. I keep listening to his music and I feel there's something deeper there I just can't reach. My understanding of Sufjan remains superficial. Maybe I'm missing out. Maybe it's just pretentious postering.
Why...why is it just NOT ENDING oh my god.... Edit: done, finally. What would have been three stars probably got knocked down to two just because of the sheer length.
Más o menos
I’ve tried multiple times with this one. I just cannot get into it.
Mostly boring
Some good instrumentals brought down by some confounding lyrical choices. Ended up being useless noise at best.
Fine but not for me
Delicate soft indie. Patience started wearing out around Jacksonville, tapped out in Decatur
Favorite Track: Chicago
It was definitely new for me. It was kind of repetitive and the song all sounded like each other. so that made it a little bit boring. but the music is very beautiful in some parts, but I didn't get the lyrics at all.
How could you omit Champaign (Paris on the Prairie) from an album about Illinois? This snoozefest is barely worth 2 stars
too long / too precious / too “mid‑2000s indie” Only song i enjoyed was the one Chiddy Bang sampled
Not really interesting, I did find it pretty long to listen to, this is not a good sign..
It was ok, my first time listening to this album
It's alright. Just not really my thing. I end up tuning out of most singer songwriter albums and completely lose sight of what point the artist is driving towards. This was no different
5/10
Boring and never ending:(((
this felt...... long. Chicago is such a standout, and the only song I knew going into this album. I wish more of the album sounded like that. I don't think I'd ever listen to this again in full.
I’ve heard a ton of praise for this album, so I was excited going in. After listening I was left thinking that this is mostly music for art students to fan over.
This was a bit much I think that there is a reason he gave up on writing an album for every state. Songs that stuck in my head were Casimir Pulaski Day and John Wayne Gacy, Jr. If I'm being honest the Microphones do this sound better. Not everything needs to be a double album, if you don't have that much awesome music (by my count 2 songs) don't put out a whole damn album. But I guess he should be happy that he has earned these two stars.
This was not enjoyable :(
I tried but could not "get it".
This was bigger than my puny brain could understand.
I should like this album. I love the wall of sound concept, and this definitely has it. But in execution here, it's just annoying. And in now way did this album need to be 22 tracks. He ran out of ideas after about 10 and then just kept going.
boring
aburrido
Look, I've tried multiple times to like this. Like any self-respecting indie teen in the late ’00s, I tried to get into this after liking bands like Bright Eyes, Iron and Wine, Bon Iver, etc. But I just couldn't. Coming back to it now, I thought maybe I've matured and could finally see the greatness of this album. I could not. I still found it as boring as I did all those years ago. Maybe you need good knowledge of Illinois to like it? I just found it meandering and boring. Like the aforementioned bands, but without the teen heartbreak. Just boring indie folk. 2 stars.
This project has convinced me that the genre of “Rock” is far too broad to be meaningful. I think if you randomly plucked a guitar for 40 minutes the album would be labeled rock. If you used an acoustic guitar specifically it’d be called folk rock. Anyways this isn’t all that great either, I see the early indie influence but it’s just very underwhelming
2.5 - Meh
I've heard a few Sufjan Stevens song albeit not a lot, but I expected to really like this album because I thought it would be similar to fourth of july or futile devices. This album really isn't for me not because these are bad songs but because I don't listen to music in this album regularly.
I like to see this album as a mix of fanfic tropes that I don't really… hate? But I'm also not sure about where I stand with them. The whole time I saw a scene of someone having a “Disney Channel”-classified “minor miscommunication destroys all” breakup, which was buttfucked by Sims 4 instrumental music for the entirety. This album made me feel like I was trying to figure out if the milk was spoiled or I was just being obnoxiously stupid. There were parts where I felt like I was supposed to feel a certain way or get to a certain type of clarity. Honestly, it was stale. I'd say giving a handjob to the local homeless guy behind a Burger King parking lot had more intrigue than this.
It wasn't for me. But the harmony was wild!!!
It wasn't my thing, and I wonder if it'd make the list if that were to be done again.
Another goofy art project that is interesting but not enjoyable.
- what are these fuckass song titles
Boooring.
Great album to fall asleep to.
Some of it is fine, but there aren’t really any catchy songs. Plus, I don’t need more than one hour of this
A bit too whimsical and folk for my liking. First song made me kinda emotional, also the only song I enjoyed. Songs sound happy but depressing at the same time? Too boring
I'm not really into this folky pop, but it wasnt bad to listen to, all ended up samey but nothing got annoying.
Mostly didn't move me. Reminded me of Owl City and went on forever.
This was….weird but I don’t entirely hate it
Interesting but won't listen again
Not my style
The lord giveth and the lord takes away….
Most songs are a 5. ALBUM SONGS WAY TOO LONG. Nice instrumental but the words ruin the songs. Good songs: -John Wayne gacy jr. 7.5/10 -Jacksonville 8/10 catchy with good instrumental -track 12 7.5/10 rlly good instrumental -track 22 7/10 no words Album rating 5/10
DNF, what I heard was okay, but I found it really difficult to get into for some reason? I didn't like track 4, quite disturbing
I'm only about 4 songs in and I know this album isn't for me.
Pre-listening thoughts: I’ve heard of this guy and I know a lot of people love him. Somebody who has finished this project picked this album as their favorite overall. I’ve never heard one of his songs or even his voice. I'm excited to finally check it out. Post-listening thought: I didn't turn it off, but I would have if I wasn't doing this 1001 project. The instrumental portions were better than when he was singing. Did not like it, won't revisit.
i'm conflicted about this one, i love sufjan stevens but some of the songs were def out of place. also long as hell >__> favorite song: They Are Night Zombies!! just for that NASTY bassline alone
Não gostei, achei muito cliché.
I chuckled at the disparity between how the album cover bigs this up, versus what you actually get. An unsuspecting person might expect a comedic, ironic take on hip hop, but what we have here instead is a listenable, but fairly tame indie album that largely stays in the same lane. In fairness, there wasn't much to actively dislike here, but equally there wasn't much of anything memorable going on across 73 minutes. It's all very pleasant, inoffensive and easily digestible, but perhaps a bit joyless and over-earnest so that it eventually dissipates into background noise.
I was pretty meh on this album until Chicago came on and I got a wave of nostalgia for a song I didn't know I knew. Unfortunately the rest is just not enough, or really it was too much because this is a long album.
Sujan is a talented music writer. His lyrics, not so much. They're the lyrical equivalent of naive art, only I know he was educated at a fairly prestigious music school. I fealt kind of bad laughing at how bad the lyrics in a song about John Wayne Gacy were.
Am not a fan of music that focuses on lyrical poetry at the expense of listenability
I did not realise that Slade was such an international cultural reference point. Notwithstanding that, I can't say I felt much noise in this
Just do us all a favor and go check out the other reviews. There are some real gems there. "If yogurt made a sound, this would be it." "If a Wes Anderson movie was an album." "Christian rock for people who buy artisan maple syrup." There is comedic gold there. Influence 2. Hits 1. Intangibles 2. Quality 4. So vanilla 3.
A little to quirky
I’ve known of Sufjan for years, but the few songs I’d heard hadn’t really converted me. This was my first experience listening to one of his albums front to back. I can respect the concept and recognize his strength as a writer, but ultimately it isn’t an album I’d find myself revisiting.
nicht aufregend
The Clown Killer song? Really? I did not enjoy this album.
Some of this sounded worship-y to my ears (especially Chicago) but the instrumental songs were pretty
Right off the bat you know you're in for some 1001 albums list BS based on the descriptor of this one. Plus 1 hour and 15 minutes runtime. Uggh. Ok. Anyway, starts off with some flute and a guy with a high pitched voice singing softly about, you guessed it, some place in Illinois. I'm guessing that's Sufjan himself--the whole thing, including his name, screams of mid-oughts hipsterdom gone awry. Anyway, then you have a kind of interpretation of the Peanuts Christmas song but with dude's singing that ruins it. Apparently Sufjan did a whole tour with Christmas music sing-alongs, so ya. And yes, of course, there is some banjo, though that track isn't bad. In fact, some of the stuff is better than I expected--it's not all terrible. 2/5
Weird. Heard of this guy, but never heard any of his music apparently. Not my thing.
Agradable sin más
A couple of interesting tracks and an engaging tune throughout. However not good enough to break the 1 hour rule so loses a star for that
Some great ideas. For me though they don't come together in any coherent way, both within songs and across the album as a whole. Maybe a day isn't enough time to get to grips with the ambition and I'll come back to it. Who knows. But for now it's a solid 2*
very chill, interesting that it's so long
By all accounts I should like this but it just seems so pretentious. And I love the arcade fire so that's a lot coming from me
Never heard of album or band. Is this a musical? UFO sighting is choppy. Weird flute. This song kind of sucks. I like Blackhawk a lot more. Still seems like a musical though. Not neccasarily a bad thing just not my style. Piano on come on is really good. This is an all around fun song. Not a fan of John Wayne gay ce. You could tell me this was released in the 60s and I’d believe it. This is not a good thing for a 2005 album. Jacksonville is kind of fun. As I keep listening I can’t help but ask: wtf is this album and who is it for. I can’t believe I’m only 7 songs in. Decatur is goofy. Chicago isn’t horrible. Good songwriting. Dated background music. Can definitely appreciate the song writing on Casimir. Very impressive. Rock river valley is fine. Again, I can appreciate the songwriting on metropolis but it’s just not my type of music. Predatory is more of the same. If you like soft rock this is the album for you. Just not my cup of tea. Cool horns I will say. Cool transition into night zombies. Back half is a lot better. A lot of filler on this album like in this temple. Really cool fade into seers tower tho. Tallest man is good music but not a great song if that makes sense. Riffs and variations is pretty cool o guess. Out of Egypt too. Again it all sounds like a musical soundtrack. It’s definitely a unique album. Just not my style. 2.2 stars.
What a wild ride....and not in a good way. This sounded like something a 12 year old would create in their basement.
Yeah I didn’t like this. I could respect some of the instrumental work which is why I’m giving it a grudging 2 stars but the vocals did nothing for me and in fact just kind of pissed me off. I just feel like there was so much to work with here but not enough was done with it
song names are long and weird. scared the lyrics will be weird or have no meaning. sounds like something i could possibly like. i didn't really like it. only one song was okay
Not something I would listen to again, but I quite enjoyed Casimir Pulaski Day
Maybe not my genre or sum but I thought this album was booty cheeks. I will say the folk pop was definitely not what I was in the mood for when I started but whatever 1001 albums says I do fr. Also this album was absurdly long but I could definitely see how people would like it. But but if I wanted to listen to a 2000s folk album set in Illinois I’m going with yankee foxtrot hotel which is miles better in my eyes! Pros: song length, Jacksonville was good, well produced Cons: album too long, most song names too long, didn’t like the vocals, album cover looks stupid, did I mention the albums too long
Not hard on the ears but I would never choose to listen for a second time.
Ahh this album was really interesting to listen too. I enjoyed myself. It wasn’t too out of my comfort zone, but there were so bits I was like wow I don’t listen to things like this. I can’t wait to listen to more diverse musical albums.
i hate this kind of stuff usually, but once starting the album, i feel like i got what it was going for, tweeness excepted. but it just went on and on and on, just one long, unchanging song, bleh
Do not like
boring(
This album grew on me and then wore off with the space of one listen. I liked the middle section (everything from John Wayne Gacy to Chicago). Knowing Sufjan Stevens' music, it is me who is wrong. But this album is not for me.
Veery strange album. Not my type of vocal, music was strange but sometimes somewhat catchy, but still 2/5 and i considered 1, but it would NOT be fair to be 1 (real reason that i gave it 2 its because he was singing about pole in song "Casimir Pulaski Day")
just not a sufjan stevens fan idk what to tell you
Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Beinahe eingepennt ey.
skychno
This was a weird listen. It sounded nice and well produced but it was 22 songs of what seemed like almost the exact same song 22 times. Didn't do much for me at all.
Not for me
There was one song in there that I enjoyed, but most were just silliness with ridiculous titles
Well at least he's not singing about California. I skipped a lot of this album. Maybe a song or two at a time would be better.
No to my tastes. Does have musical elements, but it's just too soft and passive and banal.
Twee Elliot Smith
I kinda hated this album right off the bat. The album art sucks and the superman version is only marginally cooler. Never heard of Sufjan nor this album. The first half felt like Jack Johnson trying to be quirky and quippy but then some strings and a choir came in... really beautiful. The songwriting unfortunately still did nothing for me but I can respect the instrumental variety. Favorite Song: They Are Night Zombies
White music. I started off thinking "This sounds pleasant." But then the tweeness and cutesy cutesy horns and strings kept coming. The vocals are wet. This isn't the worst music ever made. Far from it. But I can't handle this amount of soppiness. Get a grip of yourself, Sufjan!
I've tried a couple times with this album and I just can't get into it.
this would be a 5 if it were just the instrumental tracks (I am probably not being fair to this album) undecided about adding to collection
:/
simpler folk
Strange album, felt like lots of stolen bits from all of the shop. Bone of it felt real or authentic. Almost an AI quality to it ..
Too long. (2.5)
I've never listened to this album (43). Lots of qualities, but way way too quirky-hipsterish for my taste.
27th October 2025
Meh
Jacksonville is a jam, Chicago is catchy too
A bit too jolly and hippy-like for my taste
An album that has the feel of looking through holiday snapshots. A mix of indie pop, folk and mini orchestral pieces that sort of gel into a theme, Illinois in this case. I doubt this is a record that gets much repeated listening but I guess when Sufjan is planning to make 48 of them that won't be a problem. OK-ish
This one was boring AF
2/5
A bit long and the songs all start to sound the same.
This was definitely an interesting album. I'm just not sure it's interesting in the way you would want.
Cool concept album
Wow. Went into this relisten thinking I loved this album. Came out with some real issues. Bloated, repetitive, and pretentious. This album should have half as many songs, and the song names should be half as long. Done good gems in there, but overwhelmed by bloat.
Not terrible
Not for me at all
Not my cup of tea, also too long
Nothing really stood out. Not my jam.
I've listened to this album quite a few times over the years and the more I listen to it, the less I like it. Somehow I feel patronised. Like The Wiggles for adults. Something about "here's instruments for a few bars, now here's me singing my poetry" rinse repeat. Smug. It feels smug.
So weird yet so bland
meh...
Pretty good music. There's just one song that's really not for me.
Bit too ethereal and hippy for me, however, critically acclaimed. Not sure what he’s trying to say or how anyone can write an album about a State-or geographic area….
There are moments I really like on this album, particularly where it becomes more melancholy and simple. However mostly this sounds like a musical, and I hate musicals.
Could never get into their music. Jacksonville and Chicago are decent tracks.
Good instrumentals and very creative but just not my taste. I thought that it would be great for a Disney soundtrack
Musicals energy (I sadly don't like musicals). 2.
Not for me
Quite bland to be honest, not necessarily bad, but it feels too safe to be properly enjoyable
American modern folk 2005. Sei la que porra é essa!
where to begin ? i initially thought i was going to enjoy this immensely; it should be just my kind of album. a concept album when done properly can be an engaging and enjoyable listen. two such albums which come to mind being: The Decemberists - The Crane Wife Jeff Wayne's War of The Worlds but when not so well executed, it can seem disjointed and with 22 tracks covering a sprawling 74 mins, this album felt more like a slog and a chore to get through than the delight i hoped it would be. so what's the problem here ? do i have to be an American or better still an Illinoisan to get this album ? the album comprises 22 tracks, with plenty of short interlude tracks and the lengthy runtime of 74 mins giving it a lack of cohesion and a serious commitment to listen through. Essentially, there is a lot of cruft and padding. Too many of the complete songs mind me of ones you might hear in poorly-received musicale, whose critics' scathing reviews would have closed down within the week. where are the positives ? well in all honesty, there are few tracks that i'd seek to replay and i'd happily skip the majority (plenty of filler and little killer). I would shorten the album to 5 or 6 tracks at most. on to my listening experience. the first three tracks would have passed me by registering only a vague interest, were it not for an annoying phrasing in Come on Feel the Illinoise that bears a strong resemblance to Close to Me by The Cure. Is anyone else hearing that? Already three tracks down and I'm not feeling any attachment or connection yet. Next up is John Wayne Gacy Jr. and was the first track to fully capture my attention, a song about a psycho serial killer who buried people under his house so the crimes would go undetected. this gentler, folkier version of Sufjan Stevens is the one i enjoy listening to most and this track is one of the highlights of the album. followed which we have several meh tracks, which again revisit the musicale theme and for me fall quite flat. all are them are easy skippers. And then 24 minutes in, we have the rousing Chicago, which without a doubt is the track of the album. It is a celebratory and unashamedly euphoric and it juxtaposes a beautiful folk vocal from Sufjan opining on his love for Chicago, rejoined by the uplifting swell of a joyful choir who are accompanied by a bright, happy brass section. for all that had preceeded Chicago, i was in no doubt that what followed would also fall a long way short of the album's centerpoint and I sensed that making it to the end would most likely be a somewhat less joyful affair. The next tracks on from Chicago, Casimir Pulaski Day and To the Workers of the Rock River Valley Region are pleasant enough and are certainly not skippers, but the euphoric effect left on me by Chicago meant that anything following would have a tough job indeed. And why wasn't one of the instrumental interludes selected as the next track on from Chicago? to provide some breathing space and to cool our euphoria before the next song proper? this would have made for a better sequencing in my view. I then felt little enthusiasm for the next three tracks and only again felt a connection and a desire to check the track name when I was on The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! A pleasant enough song and one which would make the grade for my short form EP. Following on from that They Are Night Zombies!! was equally enjoyable, if also not amazing. I am looking now impatiently at the track lengths of the remaining 6 tracks; we have 3 complete songs and three instrumentals to get through. i don't really see the purpose of all of these short interludes; they could easily have been the outros or the intros of the tracks which they are placed between. they contribute little to the overall flow or listening experience. my score is not going to take account of these short mostly instrumental segments. so with 3 tracks to go i can only honestly say that 2 of them were underwhelming, with only the final track, an instrumental, being one of the few to fully capture my attention. Is my attention span to blame or is it the curse of the double LP ? how do i rate this overall? as an complete album, it don't feel it lends itself to repeated full listenings; i would just cherry pick the few songs which really resonate with me. five or six at most, and release as an EP which would have made for a far more engaging and enjoyable listening experience. whilst not a terrible listen, it was most definitely underwhelming and certainly fell far short of my expectations of one of the 1001 albums you must listen to. i score this a 2.50 at best. if i have to rate either 2 or 3 stars then i am downrating it to 2 stars
Lots of ideas. Some interesting. There is a definite feel of an early summers evening in a European city about most if not all of these songs. The lyrics and the slightly affected vocals never match up to the instrumentation could have listened in silence really.
Couldn't finish. Comes at you with all the power of three ghosts trapped in a Mason jar.
Alright, some good songs on here like Chicago, Casimir Pulaski day. Too long of an album though
Will this album ever end? It sounds like an album Thom York would put out of he was working at a local coffee shop and trying to impress a sad girl.
Never got this album and I don't think I ever will.
Some nice stuff on here but man it dragged
Still better than Kanye West.
Everything I listen to says I should love this but I don't.
I liked some of this but it was very long
Couldn't really do it too soft
