Reviews (page 5 of 14)

Back in 94 this was my litmus test of if I’d get on with someone. If they had this album I knew we’d be friends. His voice is extraordinary obviously, and there’s a few covers (Hallelujah most famously) but his own songs are equally strong. About as good as it gets

Mää odotinkin milloin tää levy tulee. Tiesin, että tän on oltava tällä listalla. Levy joka on inspiroinut Musea ja Radioheadia. Aivan kultaa. Ei ehkä nyt iskenyt niin, kun tätä levyä on kuitenkin niin monesti kuunnellut, mutta on 5 tähteä. Parhaat: Hallelujah, Lover You Should've Come Over, Eternal Life, Grace

incredibly moving. so sad that he was taken so early, he clearly had a great gift. 4.5

Pretty good - chill style with good voice 5/5

Amazing singer and songwriter. I have no idea how he wasn’t on my radar before this.

Come for hallelujah but stay for his amazing voice. Mojo pin starts like what I think would be playing when I walked into heaven then just unloads with the guitars and drums! Great songs and just the voice of an angel 5/5

A couple of weaker songs, and too many covers but still

Jeff Buckley tragically had a short career. A few years after his one solo album, Grace, Buckley died while swimming in the Mississippi river. Grace is an exceptional album. Buckley's potent, near-operatic voice compliments a collection of rich, engaging songs. His cover of "Hallelujah" is lovely, and his songs "Last Goodbye" seems a near-perfect match to it. This is a beautiful collection of songs, and a testament to a career that could have been...

One of the best albums of all time imo a true 10/10

Beautiful, creative Singer-Songwriter, like Fiona Apples

Had no time for a re-review today but obviously great album: highlight of course is “Hallelujah”

любовь. словно я совершенно случайно, бесконечно сильно, с огромной скоростью влюбилась в прохожего человека, а потом с такой же невероятной силой разлюбила. и мне вновь стало хорошо.

This album is iconic. The songwriting is top notch, the way he sings is full of emotion, the songs are great with some massive tracks, even the filler songs play their part and the way it flows from one song to the next is lovely. Even the album cover is special. When it comes to giving a 5, it’s down to personal preference and this album makes me feel a special kind of way. It’s a shame we didn’t get more of Jeff Buckley but what we got from this one album is more than most artists will ever contribute in their whole career.

Haunting acoustic riff sets the tone in the opener. Folk underpinnings and some angry alt rock guitars crashing through the calm to great effect. Unexpectedly pretty chord progressions with Buckley's clear voice piercing through. His take on Hallelujah just sparkles, maybe one of the best covers ever. We've covered a lot of ground by the time Forget Her fades out. Exceptional.

Floating in the atmosphere. Great voice. Definitely knows how to hit the emotional layer of a song. Also got a sense that Thom Yorke and Radio Head made notes on how this was built. Excellent singing range and mix of vocal variations. One of the issues I have with groups like Radiohead and Coldplay is how much they use falsetto such that it becomes annoying or at the very least a drawback to listening to an album as a whole.

I love the covers and the originals on this album

Musical genius, powerful vocals. A top album.

This is a beautiful album. I think it slows slightly at the last third, but overall it’s magnificent. It’s very much “of its time,” but it simultaneously transcends its time. It’s an excellent album, a special album by an artist who may have taken 90s rock in a slightly different direction had he lived long enough to continue his story.

great album

One of the best albums ever made. Ahead of it's time.

One and done. An absolute masterpiece. There's a very short list of debut albums that are this good. His talent fronting his supporting band fires on all cylinders all the time.

Beautiful and sad voice

Love it.

It's an absolute joy revisiting this. Stuffed with ideas and one of the all time vocal performances. Puts me in mind of The Smiths in parts (He did a great cover of The Boy with the Thorn in his Side). Highlights for me are Lilac Wine, Lover you..., Dream Brother. Think this is the definitive recording of Hallelujah as well, pity it's so overplayed.

Completely and totally obsessed. Jeff Buckley knows me and every heartbreak I've ever had, down to my core. Genuinely his grasp of anger and intimacy and devotion and grief is stunning and musically it's so rich, his vocals are incredible. Nothing but praise.

Excellent album!

Awesome and fire i love jeff buckley im gay

Excellent. The influences are obvious but something about this album and the songs presented here seem to transcend genre, bridging things you otherwise might not think would get along. What I really wasn't expecting was the certain level of energy, intensity, and mysterious quality I've only encountered from Jeremy Enigk. I will definitely revisit but perhaps occasionally as it does have an overwhelming presence, primarily regarding the vocals.

Oh that was soo reeaaaal

He has the voice on an angel. Combined with that jangley guitar, just beautiful. Eerie and haunting.

A masterpiece.

המנוני רוק, תפילות של חשמלית, כאילו זמר של מקהלת כנסיה החליט להביא לקרקע גן עדן וגיהנות לרקוח צלילים מאוד מאוד יפים. זה אלבום מאוד מאוד טוב

one of the most influential albums of my life. it took me time and i didnt get it at first, but then when my soul accepted this magic to enter, it entered and followed me since then

One of my favorite albums. So good.

Interesting blend of west African music & electronica but it doesn’t quite hang together

This is a beautiful album from start to finish. The falsetto voice against the guitar sound is a stunning combination. The songs are filled with emotion and jaw dropping heart. I could listen to Last Goodbye on a loop for a year and still feel my heart swell.

Liefde op het eerste gezicht, landt gelijk in de rotation

this album is almost perfect, the songs are all great and fenomenal examples of every single aspect in song producing and composing. it has tho some too dense songs for my taste, like so real and dream brother. theyre good songs of course, but their sentimental wheight overwhelm me. again, my taste. maybe im just too young or too old. speaking of that, holy fucking shit how can someone write a song like lover, you shouldve come over???? its sooo beautiful and the perfect balance in catchy and complex. his orgasmic way of singing is something i took a little bit to get used to, but now i see blatantly how beautiful of a singer this man was. its a perfect exemple of how much can music grow in you on some listens. have been listening to this for a long time now, and only started loving it a couple listens ago.

So good. I’m downloading this one

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE 5/5

To p 10 of all time

Really enjoyed this album, it wasn’t repetitive and had lots of variety. Super well composed/scored. Nothing really you’d tap your foot to, but mellow/emotional vibes throughout.

Kind of blown away by how good this is, the first half in particular is brilliant. I thought Jeff Buckley was from at least the 80s, not the mid 90s. I also thought he was quite a laid back acoustic sort of singer songwriter but he has a lot in common with Radiohead, hallelujah is admittedly great in its own right but it's been tarred by too many covers and it warped my perception of Jeff. My one criticism would the vocals get a bit warbly at times, I think some parts would have been better if he'd sang them a bit straighter. That said, I'm going to listen to this again a lot.

Tu vaux bien mieux que ton père Jeff

il mérite

Its so beautiful one of my all time favorite albums. I love his voice, its so heartbreaking, I wish he had been able to make more music :(

Incredible vocals. Damn clean production. Fantastic cover of Hallelujah. Personal stand-out track: Love, You should've come over. Expertly mixed and produced, incredible talent. Can easily see why this album has the status it does.

4.8 - I didn't think I was going to like this as much as I did. I've always liked Buckley's live album and thought I was just going to wait for hallelujah to come on, but the whole album just felt complete. I think some might be turned off by his voice, but fuck em

The first 7 tracks of Grace are all flawless to me. There's no other album that is so consistently perfect from the get-go. Jeff's vocal range and the character of his voice are spectacular and unique. The guitar tones are some of the most beautiful ever recorded. The performance is so raw and emotional. There are two of the best covers of all time on the album, "Lilac Wine" and "Hallelujah", two outstanding songs in their own right that Jeff fully makes his own. Anyone with a heart and a working set of ears knows. 5/5

5+ stars. Still spine-tingling on the hundredth listen.

Tja... prachtig!

I would love to know what music Jeff Buckley would have put out if he had lived and his music had matured. His sound is incredible! It's such a shame he is no longer with us and under such tragic circumstances. I love this album - it transports me right back to mid highschool when I first listened to it. Buckley's covers of Lilac Wine and Hallelujah are amazing and obviously well loved - but it's 'Lover, you should've come over' which will always be my personal favourite. I feel like Mojo pin is the weakest, so it is a shame that is the opening track, but honestly the whole album is amazing - his voice, the lyrics, the guitar/band - I love it all. I had a bit of a moment to myself while listening to the album last night - standing outside on the balcony, full moon over the river, glass of wine - completely ethereal (or maybe I just have a thing for musicians who sing in falsetto?) Top three in order to most fave: Dream brother, Grace, Lover you should've come over

One of the greatest albums of all time.

What an excellent first album to start this journey of discovery!

amazing. love it. album saved, and will be listened to again.

This album proves to me that singer songwriters are a spacial and rare breed - here you will find the amazing Leonard Cohen song Hallelulah which is in its own way a classic but Jeff takes it to a whole another level. Listen to this album, and get deep into the vocals of Jeff Buckley and here just as few hints to to sounds of his dad Tim.

Will always invoke surrealism and introspection. Lovely album.

Outrageous Eternal life is insane, ridiculous contrast to track before

Not sure if it's just the mystique surrounding him or his tragic death but this album has an aura. Even the fact that some of these are covers he did some of the best covers. Accomplished guitarist and beautiful fragile voice.

What a classic!

A damn near perfect collection of songs suffused with emotion and, of course, tragedy. As familiar as this gets, repeat listens highlight new moments which surprise and move and strike home the loss of this peerless artist all the more. And the audacity to not only cover Cohen but to make the definitive version of Hallelujah speaks to an artist of true insight and inspiration.

A wonderful album which swells into life and surges forward with honesty, complexity, and sincerity.

The fact that this album got mixed reviews at the time of release speaks more to the time than the music I think. It's absolutely timeless. Buckley comes out of the gate swinging with hands down some of the most impressive vocals you've ever heard in your life. The versatility in his range is unmatched. Combine that with eclectic instrumentation that effortlessly blends pop, rock and psychedelic sounds, and you've got nothing but eyebrow-raising tracks. It's a damn shame Mr. Buckley left us as early as he did, and in one of the more unfair tragedies among rockstars. I can only imagine what a collab would sound like with a modern master like Yorke (who was very much influenced by Jeff).

Buckley’s unique mix of raw virtuosity, remarkable vocal range, and tender vulnerability results in a classic one-and-done legacy that, like the mighty Mississippi, remains unfuckwitable.

"Grace remains one of the most engaging, inspired records ever made, and its 10 original songs serve as the best possible portrait of Buckley as a diva, songwriter and artist. Grace's strengths have been well-documented over the years: The flawless choice of cover songs, including the definitive reading of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" - the mystic, blue textures of "Mojo Pin", "So Real" and "Dream Brother". And of course, he sang the hell out of those songs. His reading of Nina Simone's "Lilac Wine" transformed from misty cocktail lament into transcendental experience."

So haunting. So beautiful.

Perfect Album

This is not an easy listen. I know this album very well and it's a 'break glass in case of breakup' album. Some of the songs are clearly better than the others, but the songs that hit me have me in tears. An unreserved masterpiece. Another easy 5/5 from me.

my name is jeff

This album is so good, every track feels so thought through and heartfelt. RIP Jeff Buckley

Heartbreaking, mesmerizing, 90s personified.

Sublime.

Straight up one of the best albums ever by songwriting and singing ability Gone too soon RIP Shame about corpus Christi carol being a bit slower and not really the same calibre to the others but still, there's no one like him and I doubt there will be.

The GOAT

Own this one, it's really good.

With the exception of Corpus Christi Carol this is a great album. Hallelujah being an obvious highlight, still reminds me of Shrek before Leonard Cohen

First listen Saved 9/11 Top track: Eternal Life

Much better than I expected

Great, and deep cut album. Alleluia is a must listen.

Peerless.

Day 1 Jeff Buckley Grace Reminds me of Mark engineer 7 years ago telling me I needed to hear this since it was one of the greatest albums of all time, and he sensed Jeff Buckley potential from me. Androgynous, operatic, grand, but also relatable singer songwriter lyrics like Van Morrison. Combining goo storytelling with intense musicality and experimental expression, definitely not pop. Musician’s music. It's a masterpiece. I've favourited almost every single song.

Honestly great stuff , underrated

Awesome album, downloaded it.

This is such a beautiful album, and a tragedy we lost him so young; image all the great albums we missed out on. If you've only heard his cover of Hallelujah, you are missing out the rest of the album. I think Last Goodbye might be in my list of one of the best songs of all time. This is just a beautiful album and I'm doubting my rating already, it might be too low! Standouts: Grace, Last Goodbye, Hallelujah, Lover, You Should've Come Over, Eternal Life

Hallelujah has always been one of my favorite songs so this shit was at a baseline 3 before I even listened but I had no idea the rest of the album would be so full of emotion. Lover you should’ve come over might be a top 3 track OAT. Very Glad I listened and RIP Jeff, gone too soon

Love it

One of the best albums ever made!

Awesome. Feels like it may have inspired early Radiohead

Such a beautiful album. I liked it more the longer I listened to it. It has really great dynamics between soft songs like Hallelujah and the intensity of Lover You Should’ve Come Over.

No lo conocia, muy bueno me gusto mucho!

Amazing, whole album feels very cohesive and there are very good tracks

Beautiful album!!

Absolute masterpiece! This is THE definitive version of Hallelujah

Crushed it

First time listening to this one, recognised the cover but didn’t know anything about the album or Jeff. Absolutely astonishing songwriting, vocals, guitar playing and album. Blown away, truly deserving of a “widely considered as one of the greatest albums ever” in the wiki description.

4.6 The songs that are great on this are absolute masterpieces, some are skips imo compared but probably cos the standard is so high. Fave songs: Lover you should have come over, Mojo Pin, grace

Such an amazing voice. It's sad that he got to make only one album.

I'm pretty familiar with this one and have bounced off it a lot of times in the past but yesterday it hit just right and I loved it.

No thanks. Great album mind.

Sublime

Loved it! His voice was so beautiful ♥️

90/100

Voice is spectacular. The music works. Jeff's tragic end just adds to the mystic Listen to this album people. Thank you Jeff.

Great album, too bad this is the only one he made. His singing is incredible. The title track Grace is a great song. Last Goodbye, great guitars, great singing. His cover of Hallelujah was superior to the original, in my opinion is the definitive version of the song. Lover you should have come over is just brilliant, great song. Eternal Life surprised me, much more grunge than the rest of the tracks. Overall a great mix of music, excellent album.

This album is unfortunately Jeff Buckley's only one. He has a penchant for crafting suite-like guitar and voice forward songs that expertly navigate tonal and dynamic changes. He is an excellent guitar player, but what really shines through is his voice. His control is exceptional and his ability to oscillate between delicate and powerful is incredible. The music itself is very well crafted with alternative/psychedelic impulses that are mellowed and made more accessible. People who prefer pop versus grunge/alternative can all find something to enjoy this album. It's a shame that this is all we have.

that was so real

I LOVE JEFF BUCKLEY

Excellent. I never had a Jeff Buckley phase, but I now understand why most of my friends absolutely loved this album. I really missed out at the time but glad to have listened as part of this challenge. Beautiful piece.

All time classic. - Sad, emotional, real. - Great lyrics, awesome karaoke material.

Amazing album, wow

Incredible album from start to finish

One of my all time favourite albums.

Beautiful man, beautiful voice, beautiful album, tragic loss.

Had heard Hallelujah before but lots of good songs. Really good! Performed Zeppelin, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Bob Dylan, Édith Piaf, Elton John, the Smiths, Bad Brains, Leonard Cohen, Robert Johnson and Siouxsie Sioux.. Father was “Tim Buckley” who was a singer himself. 9/21/23

I had only ever heard the song Halleujah by Jeff Buckley but had knew about him. So I went into this album thinking it might be over-hyped. I was so wrong, this album is a beautiful album. It is such a shame that we only got to have one album of songs from Jeff but listening to the songs you can tell that he was a pained man, leaving us so soon.

fabulous; one of my favorite albums (5)

I loved this album and give it five stars. He mixes so many disparate influences deftly and I feel like we lost him way too soon.

Angelic voice and some very interesting mix of songs. Hallelujah is obviously what makes this album standout. As far as covers go, I have no problem defending that alongside All Along The Watchtower, this is a top-tier cover. The song is brutally passionate and mesmerizing; it’s hauntingly beautiful. Lover you should come over is no less transcendent and you realize that with each listen, this album was onto something special.

When I first heard this album I was surprised by how much it rocked. It’s got a lot of loud moments, despite relying mostly on distortion-free guitar sounds. In fact it touches a lot of bases, from soulful to woozy to heavy to ethereal, all with a theatrical flair, which I like. The more restrained moments are equally effective though (I put on Corpus Christi Carol every Christmas Day when we’re opening our presents, and there can be no higher compliment than that). I guess when you’ve got a voice that good you can pull off whatever genre you want. Oh, and is Jeff‘s version of Hallelujah the best cover of any song ever? Yes. Yes it is. 4.5

Soooo good. I knew about Jeff Buckley but never listened to the whole album. Amazing need to get a copy

Gloria total.

From this generator my partner and I have discovered two things, with each of us discovering one. On my side, I got Kimono My House, which pointed us towards discovering Sparks and now having a mutual favorite band of all time. And for them, they discovered the Buckley family. First it was Tim Buckley, in which they loved his voice and more eccentric musical pallette, but then they got Jeff Buckley. Now, it's safe to say this album would rank in their top ten favorites of all time, and that obviously means I got to hear this one before I got it on here too. As for the album itself for me? It's amazing. Buckley's voice is angelic and mesmerizing. The band performing with him knows the exact mood to go for to really know when to go all out and reel it back in, and the obvious inspirations this had on artists like Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy is worn on their sleeves. To say that this album is amazing in every way is a very easy statement. I mean, I really don't know what to say that hasn't been said. The opening track is fantastic and keeps that solid energy all the way through to the very end of the album. If I had slight critiques it'd be the length of some of the tracks, but that really doesn't matter too much when you're in the mood for this sort of stuff. I may not love this as much as my partner, but this is still an easy five star (two in a row, woo-hoo!)

Jeff Buckley - possibly the best rock album of the 90’s. Such an incredible singer and songwriter. “Lover you Should’ve Come Over” gets me every time. So does “Last Goodbye” and “So Real”. Honestly, every song is so good. Really love the dynamics and heavier moments on songs like Eternal Life. Super nuanced and organic feeling album.

Such a well done album, really great writing and production. kept me interested the whole time.

Wow! I love how different each song is and exciting. I can’t believe Hallelujah and Eternal Life is on the same album. Definitely on regular rotation from here on out.

The tragic circumstances surrounding Buckley’s way to early death surely helped lift this album to surreal acclaim. Exactly where it belongs. Grace is one of the strongest albums of the entire 90’s and I’m shocked every time I listen just how great everything is. Buckley might have been the greatest songwriter of his generation. It’s definitely what Grace is pointing towards.

Jeff Buckley is one of my all-time favorite vocalists. His voice just does whatever he wants it to do, effortlessly. An incredible combination of Nina Simone and Robert Plant. This album packs such a wide range of emotion. Buckley's Hallelujah is probably the definitive version at this point, but it might not even be the best cover on the album, because Lilac Wine is also there. Grace is packed full of great songs with just a couple that are only pretty good. It's a shame we lost such a talent so young, but at least we have Grace.

YES GAVE ME AN EXCUSE TO LISTEN TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUMS WITH ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS EVER ON IT

The range on this album is simply stunning. I've made my feelings on singer-songwriter albums in this book excruciatingly clear. But, like Joan Armatrading, this is a cut against the grain. Incredibly impressive amount of styles covered by a single singer here, and the arrangements are clearly a big focal point as well. Favorite track: Eternal Life

really liked it

Hallelujah! Strong 9

wonderful

hace bastante un disco no me gustaba tanto en la 1ra escuchada

This is one of the best albums from the 90s. It has everything: tenderness, touch, feeling, emotive vocal delivery, and exquisite guitar work. I still remember when I got to listen to it for the first time. Grace blew my mind. It still does. Jeff is one of those music martyrs that left so much to say.

It is memories. It reminds me of what it’s like to be alive. His soul can be heard yearning to escape his form. Beautiful record. Wish he was still around.

One of the best albums oat

With a voice like that, and with such guitar skills, Jeff Buckley could play the classified section of a newspaper and turn it into a transcendent experience. But what he played was terrific original compositions, plus a string of stellar covers. When you take a Leonard Cohen song and your version of it erases the original one in public consciousness, it means you're a genius up to the level of Nina Simone. Add to this the iconic impact of a talented artist gone too soon (and the son of another one to boot, also gone too soon!) and you get an album that obviously deserves to be in a rather high slot in such a list. 5/5, what else? Number of albums left to review: 518 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 231 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 110 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 141

ah my heart. Easiest 5 ever.

This guy was shockingly good. Amazing playing style, crazy creative vocal style, and then vanished. Wow.

An amazing album. Full of heart and soul. A complete and utter joy to listen to.

real nice

day 19. This album is sublime and I'm so glad I only knew Hallelujah before listening. When it came up, I knew enough to know I should be paying attention to this one, so I saved it for a relaxed Sunday night. So many feelings about this. I'm starting to understand why so many artists cite him as an influence both for guitar and vocals. I could hear so many parallels. What stands out to me is how dynamic it is. You're getting a wide range of genres on the album, but also great progression on each individual track, especially in the first half of the album. So many tone shifts and songs that went a different direction than you would expect, sounds interwoven beautifully. Two of my faves, Grace and So Real were great examples of this. And yet the album is balanced as if he knew exactly where people may perceive him as doing "too much", and pull back. Hallelujah is perfectly timed on the album. The only song I would skip is Corpus Christi Carol, but even that one sets up nicely in juxtaposition to Eternal Life afterward. EASY 5/5 rating random note - the closer on Spotify is Forget Her, which was not on the original release. I read it was supposed to be on the album, but Buckley (who seemed repulsed by the song) pulled it at the last minute in favor of So Real. It was later released posthumously. I felt a little guilty for enjoying the song after hearing how Buckley felt about it. But, before knowing this I did think it felt off as a closer, with Dream Brother suiting the mood of the album better.

So much better than I was expecting. Pretty varied stuff

Really surprised me, enjoyed most of the songs and was a great listen, probably will listen to it again sometime in the future.

I've heard Hallelujah before, but nothing else. Digging this. It's maybe a bit overdramatic and emotionally overwrought, but Buckley and the band sell it. Great use of dynamics. I'll want to dig this out again. 4.5

Loved it

Jeff still fresh

Incredible album

Cet album me butte du début à la fin c'est sûrement un de mes albums préférés

The delicate guitar work, that haunting siren voice, an entire lifetime of pain expressed in yearning for what can never be again. What an incredible body of work we were robbed of.

best album ever ⁉️

One of the most begrudging 5's ever. Its not just peer pressure, honest

Stunning. Absolutely stunning. I don't think I've ever listened to his version of "Hallelujah" this intensely, but the entire album was a masterpiece and I felt changed. I cannot explain how much I love his voice.

The best album of all time. Absolute perfection from the first note to the last. An album I listen to at least four times a week, and always hear something special. The tragedy is that it is his only completed album, but that makes it more special rather than less. Miss you Jeff

People have been telling me to listen to this album for years and I wish I had sooner. This is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. The way Buckley sings with passion and moving lyrics over ethereal melodies is truly magical. I don't think I could pick a favorite when the whole album is almost perfect.

Lots of very very different stuff in here. Really loved it

Completely unexpected. So many good riffs and little melodies, great guitar and bass tone and really dynamic progressions that keep you guessing and driving the songs forwards. I can't wait to listen to this again and actually pay attention to the lyrics since musically this is a pure standout album. * Grace * Lover, You Should've Come Over * Eternal Life * Dream Brother

Righteous. Impossible to define - this album is all over the place, in a good way. Both guitar and vocal hero all at once all over this one ... guitar hero not necessarily with ripping solos but with unusual chord voicings (almost reminiscent of how Joni Mitchell would use alt-tuning and come up with what almost sounded like new chords) and fingerpicking; his guitar tone ranges from pure clarity to hard-rock aggressive. Jeff was the rare singer who drew my attention, even on lesser songs - had vocal acrobatics akin to both Robert Plant and Nina Simone and everywhere in-between. So the best on here was truly unique and amazing (e.g. first 3 cuts set the tone and mood; the album probably would be worth a minimum 4/5 if the next 7 were simply silence). As a complete entity it sometimes feels not *perfect* to me (although "Last Goodbye" is a 100/10 song) but I wonder if that's just because he was trying *everything* for his first album as it goes from old hymns to hard rock ... but again: this is/was *his first album* (and of course his only album before dying). Cannot imagine where he'd have taken things when he'd have shed some covers and stuck with his own material. In the small handful of greatest debuts in history, worthy of any keeper status. Love getting a 5 star weekend album. 9.5/10 5 stars.

I just got a Tim Buckley album not very long ago and I loved it, so I figured I would like this album if they were similar at all. This was absolutely amazing. I had high expectations, but I was caught off guard by just how much I liked this. I just sat there in awe for about a minute when the album started. What can I say, I like it when men whine and moan when they sing. He had an amazing voice, and he showed it off prominently in this album. Absolute shame he passed away so young. It is very hard to pick favourite songs when basically everything is a banger, but I'd say my favourite songs were Dream Brother, Lilac Wine, and Forget Her.

People have been telling me to listen to this album for years and I wish I had sooner. This is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. The way Buckley sings with passion and moving lyrics over ethereal melodies is truly magical. I don't think I could pick a favorite when the whole album is almost perfect.

Haunting choral like vocals with hard hitting 90s alternative rock drums. This album is a masterpiece. Highlight tracks: Grace, Lilac Wine, Hallelujah, Lover You Should’ve Come Over

Amazing. Wow!! 5 stars (91%)

Lovely stuff

Unbelievable voice. Idk if it’s too early to say that this album changed my life but I feel like it has that power. Standouts: Lover, You Should’ve Come Over Mojo Pin Hallelujah

Beautiful album. It’s Pink Moon for the 90s.

Loved lilac wine. So real is great This album is hot hot hot imo. Never something uninteresting or too boring and I like that it’s generally pretty soft but not afraid to hit you over the head with some GROOOOVES (mainly talkin about the guitar on Eternal Life). It feels like this album takes everything good about rock from the past 2 decades and just does it all better and with more love and care.

Wonderfully gothic and pure

One of my favorite albums growing up. 10/10

Don't trust people that don't like this album

GOAT ALBUM

What a phenomenal experience. Angelic vocals and he plucks right at the heart strings with that guitar

i'm gonna admit something... i've never heard this album. it's crazy! bc it's so well-regarded, but i had never gotten to it. i can see why people love jeff buckley, and i loved this as well, because i love a melancholy acoustic track. this is industry standard-setting stuff. respect.

A true 5* album. With the mix of Zeppelin like guitars, one of the most breakable voices to have ever sung and the redefining of the song Hallelujah for a new generation, this is a truly superb album

Hallelujah of course is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. The rest of the album is pretty cool too

A perfect album, I think I've listened to this way too many times in my life, and I always find something new and a new perspective to the songs and the playing in this album. A true masterpiece - wish we had more of Jeff Buckley - we lost him too soon.

This man has an angelic voice and some of the best songwriting of all time

absolutely amazing not one bad song

amo demais

Better than I expected. Of course I new 'Hallelujah' which is a beautiful cover. And I was also familiair with 'Lilac Wine' and 'Grace', but there are many more good songs on this album. Quite some different styles as well, which I liked. 5/5

Wow. What an album. Very good from start to finish. The way jeff can take his voice into many ranges is unbelievable. I’m glad I got this album on Jan 16th. It gave me some hope on the past relationship. Driving home from work late at night and listening to forget her was an experience I’ll never forget. This album is hands down amazing and I will be visiting many times.

This is a great among greats and a classic among classics. I think I've found one of my new all-time favorite albums. Jeff's voice is transcendent, every note placed like only a master can. The songs are all varied, memorable, and powerful. The musicians all playing top notch. This was so so so so SO good.

A surprising amount of variety in this album, with a lot of potential for a future career. Unfortunately, not possible in this case, and that does not save the album from being lower in the 5s, but I do think it is important enough to get that ranking, even if on the lower end.

A classic singer songwriter album. The emotion Jeff conveys through his melodies and words is truly moving. The tone of his telecaster is iconic and ethereal. His rendition of Hallelujah gives it a different feel. Highlights are Lover you should've come over, Last Goodbye, Lilac Wine and Hallelujah

Cracking

Great range and passion in each song. Hallelujah

Best album ever made ! Ask David Bowie

Such a beautiful album, I am so in love. I will definitely be looking into this more, I feel like it had such an impact on artists today. Like I’m assuming Hozier drew inspiration from this.

super sweet album said what happened to Jeff, as well as his father :( anyway, the album was really beautiful, I enjoyed nearly every song I wasn’t a fan of Eternal Life, it’s just too grungy, 90’s metal for me but yeah beyond that, wonderful album solid 9/10

This is an excellent album. Great songs, great music, vocals a bit on the edge for me, but very soulful and expressive, and the best rendition of Hallelujah that I have heard.

This album is so great, Jeff has such a wonderful voice and the melodies blends this all in a musical bliss.

It was the first time I heard Jeff Buckley and I must say that I was blown away. We often hear powerful voices, but rarely with so many emotions and nuances. Musically, the compositions are magnificent and extremely well put together and blend perfectly with the voice of Jeff Buckley.

I liked it

best album ever. can die peacefully knowing i’ve heard it. so real is so fucking real

Oh wonderful! An all-time favourite album of mine. A phenomenal debut album, Jeff Buckley was a man of staggering musical talent. I remember playing this album for my husband a few years back and he was so impressed by the guitar. He said all of these riffs could so easily be metal or hard rock riffs but they're played with such clean precision instead. I adore the feeling of heart-wrenching ache this album evokes every time I listen. It's emotional, yearning, deeply vulnerable, and oh so sexy all at once. Lover, You Should’ve Come Over is my favourite track. It's rife with drama and unrequited love in the juiciest way. The vocals are impressive, every track you get something nuanced in the cadence of his singing and inflection. Such a tragic loss when he died. He was an irreplaceable talent, a wonderfully emotional and complex artist, and I wish we'd all been able to see what else he would have done. This was only the beginning of what would have been a truly remarkable career. Top marks.

Amazing from front to back. This is one I always meant to sit down and listen to, but never did. 5/5. Favorite track: Eternal Life

I love this album so much!

You either loved him or hated him. I personally think this album is amazing and associate a lot of great memories with it.

A favourite

Sedate album but undeniably great, where the bass line for Eternal life comes from on this album I’ll never know

Awesome album

An album I’ve meant to listen to for years. I’ve seen this album cover in music stores for decades, seen it listed in music magazines but never gave it a chance. What a record though, so happy I have heard it in its entirety. But I would have been so in to this when I was in my 90s renaissance phase in my teens/early 20s. I love Last Goodbye so much.

Infusing the virtuoso vocal performances of his father Tim and his own passionate yet gritty style, Jeff Buckley possessed a talent that was ready to take over when he unexpectedly died. Grace, the only album released in his lifetime, is the complete document of what could have been had he refined and perfected his style further. With the 1-2-3 punch of the first three tracks and the most consequential cover of a Leonard Cohen song ever, Grace was just the beginning of a story that never got the chance to be told.

One of the best albums I've heard in a long time.

🥰🥰

Loved it!

What a fantastic surprise. From a great cover of Hallelujah to the other songs filled with great guitar work, nice drums and great vocals. This album flew under the radar when it was released but now over the years has finally gotten the recognition it deserves

I've heard this album a hundred times, but have no hesitation about putting it on again for this. Absolutely phenomenal. Where would he have gone, musically? We'll never know - we were robbed.

bangeur

So many moments causing so many shivers down my spine. If ever there was a masterpiece…

It's a 5. There is no other score this album can have.

Perfect.

One of the best albums of all time. Easiest 5 so far

classic.

- Grandios, mehr fällt mir hier nicht zu ein.

Outstanding, albums like this are why I am doing this. Hallelujah will never fail to give me goosebumps

I kinda groaned when I saw this album because I thought it was gonna be bad. I’ve seen the cover art before and wrongly associated it with something corny. This album is honestly really good. That first song set a great mood for the rest of the album. It runs a little long but it’s definitely worth the listen if you’re willing to put in the time

He really does sound like Tim Buckley's teenage son going through his emo / grunge phase. His vocals are the highlight here, haunting and expressive with a dynamic range, reminding me a lot of Thom Yorke yet neither better nor worse than him. It's powerful and dramatic. Instrumentals are rich and complex, melodic and not afraid to show its power or versatility. Sometimes harsh and clustered but other times smooth and jazzy. The dark, mysterious, trance-like sound and use of repetitive themes definitely came from his father's psychedelic folk work, but it sounds so complete and put together here. Production is insanely clean and impressive. Most songs are memorable after just a couple listens. A lot of songs like "Last Goodbye" and "Eternal Life" sound like what 90s pop alt rock would attempt to imitate but would always fail. I actually never heard any of these songs before, even "Hallelujah", so coming into this album blind was a huge shock. Loved every track for completely different reasons. Didn't even notice it was an hour.

A pretty incredible debut. Fave track: Last Goodbye

Dang, what a talent. His covers are just _sublime_. "Hallelujah", "Lilac Wine" and "Corpus Christi Carol" are all just wonderful versions. Fave track - "Last Goodbye" if I'm picking a Buckley original, or "Hallelujah" if covers are allowed.

Always a delight, love this album

Never really stopped to listen to this album until the recommendation, I appreciate this

beautifully haunting. rest in peace jeff.

A classic. Everyone knows this. A gem of perfectly captured talent that is bittersweet as we wanted more , and that’s never going to happen

hi this is one of my favorite albums so its a 5. I have it on vinyl so you know it's real. the guitar in this is so good, super full and warm in a way. the strumming is so intentionally strong i love it. like the guitar on grace come on. the covers are unparalleled. fav is lover you should've come over. so many different sounds on one album that works so well. wonderful and tragic that there couldn't be more

Greatest voice of the 90s (if not the greatest album of the 90s)

his voice is so beautiful. So captivating. Like drifting into a dream and being woken up abruptly but that’s alright. I want his voice. Amazing lyrics and instrumentals as well. The soft aggressive acoustic that teenage boys nowadays wish they could achieve. The contrast between overwhelming chaos and haunted peaceful tunes is just out of this world. Love songs worth fainting to. Feels like driving at 11pm alone with nothing but your thoughts. Songs I yearn to.

Hallelujah 5/5

Simply beautiful. Not much else to say about this one. 5/5

Dificilísimo escoger una canción favorita. Definitivamente es de los álbumes más influyentes y atemporales que hay por ahí, para no decir artistas.

Amazing voice. Loved it.

p744. 1994. 5 stars Great songs, great production, great guitar work and THAT voice. And it has the rarest of things, a cover that has become the definitive version. Faultless. To what heights could he have risen...

Already very familiar with this album. First heard it in my early teens and sounds just as powerful now. Masterful guitar and vocal work over an idiosyncratic mix of soulful blues and 90s tinged rock. A masterpiece.

Voice of an angel

Love this album

Just glorious

Masterpiece

Spectacular

-Hallelujah cover was decent -Eternal life was a good switch up on the album, rlly nice:)

Odd relationship with this album because I love the versions of many of these songs from the Live at Sin-é album just a little bit more (particularly Eternal Life). All things being equal it’s an album I’d likely give 4 stars, but I have to push it one extra for so, so brief a candle.

Loved this album growingup

re listened a few times

YES!!! 5 Ok I knew multiple songs quite well, but I didn't know all of the songs would be so good. Obviously Jeff Buckleys only studio album gets a roaring 5. Holy shit when "Eternal Life" came on I thought spotify played from radio or something. It's so different, and so good.

What is there to say about this album that hasn't already been said - a life and career tragically cut too short.

Not much to say; Jeff Buckley is pretty damn good. The songwriting and singing are great, and considering he was a session guitar player before recording this album the songs are pretty balanced instrumentation wise, not entirely guitar-centric.

Remember my sister being a huge fan back in the day, but never really listened to this myself. What a shame I haven't got around to it before now, because this is phenomenal. Singing is incredible, compositions interesting and production stellar. I understand why this is as legendary as it is.

I like this album a lot. The songs are all well-written, the kind that take a few or more listens to really enjoy and appreciate. Also RIP

Really great, might even bump it up to a 10 if I keep listening to this album. 9/10

I don't know if Jeff Buckley's death hindered his potential to follow up with an amazing discography, or if it solidified him as a legend with a sole fantastic album. This has a bit of everything, Jeff's great vocals and guitar playing, wrote some amazing songs and had a cover that matched them, and has a decent backing band and additional songwriters to compliment the artist. I was just really pleased that there was so much more to enjoy than his cover of Hallelujah. Last Goodbye, Grace, Mojo Pin all slap.

Sometimes I wear extra-strength skepticism filters when I see lots of praise for an album I'm not familiar with, especially if I feel it might be somewhat elevated from other factors, such as the emotions of losing an artist too soon. That was all blown away by this beautiful and powerful work. And the loss of this artist did, in fact, bring tears to my eyes as I listened to his incredible music. "Hallelujah" is one of those favorite songs that may have been overdone in the '00s, but I really think it was because Buckley's version set the standard. It was like I heard the song for the first time today and I felt the joy again. It is magnificent from beginning to end. It's possible that I enjoy Buckley's clearly Zeppelin-influenced pieces more than I do Zeppelin... This is one I will definitely want to spend more time with. There is more to explore and feel, I think.

Mmm-hmmm. This album gave me deep deep feelings and left me with few words. This is one of the special ones.

I expected this to be great, but GRACE still surprised me by just how great it is! Jeff Buckley does so much in this album. Achingly heartbreaking at times, yet not afraid to turn up the distortion on the guitar an rock out. Buckley tries a lot of things on this album and it all works incredibly well. I am transfixed. In one moment he is soaring to epic heights then effortlessly dives into deep personal introspection. What an incredible ride! I love this album so very much. Why when I first heard Jeff Buckley’s rendition of “Hallelujah” I didn’t immediate run out and buy this album I’ll never know. This song deserves all the love and praise. The performance is perfection. It is remarkable that the rest of the album more than lives up to the impossibly high standard set by this incredible performance. “Last Goodbye” is an incredibly mature breakup song so great it seems like a clear and present threat to a breakup. “Lilac Wine” is a touching performance of heartbreak as the singer reminisces on a lost love. An incredible performance that gives me chills as it ends. The fantastic accordion opening, beautiful organ and arching lyrics of “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” gives the perspective of a man desperately looking for the return of an absent lover. He passingly acknowledges culpability as he cries out for her return. “Eternal Life” is one of the harder rock songs. Buzzy guitars grind over intense lyrics like ‘I’ve got a message for you and your twisted hell, You better turn around and blow your kiss goodbye to life eternal Angel yeah.” Halfway through the song seems to take off as the guitars soar boosted by a dramatic string section. The original finale of the album is “Dream Brother”. It opens with dissonant plucking that gives way to a moody guitar riff over exotic drums. It was written to a friend in another 1001 band (Fishbone!) trying to encourage him not to abandon his pregnant girlfriend by invoking his own abandonment by his father Tim Buckley (also a 1001 artist!). Beautifully complicated and utterly unforgettable. I was a little sad to learn there’s only one Jeff Buckley album in the world. Then I felt a little silly because we get more from this album than any of us deserve.

Actively avoided listening to this for a while as so many talent show voices had mangled Hallelujah so much. What a phenomenal talent, not a single duff track and even in the rockiest moments sounds intimate.

A career tragically cut short, but you can see even on this album he was destinied to be one of the greats

Absolutely perfect. One of my favorite voices. Not Otis Redding, not Fiona Apple, but as distinctive and brilliant.

An incredible album - such a beautiful voice and songwriting with a heartbreaking legacy behind it

Hørte eit program om Tim Buckley på radioen her om dagen, men eg like Jeff Buckley bedre. Bra album, hørte masse på da når eg vaska på gamleheim i sommerferien for mange år siden

Incredible to discover he doesn't sound Hallelujah

❤️

A fantastic album. One of my favourites.

muss sich nun jeder der noch auf die seite schaut anhören

full nostalgia teen love here

It's amazing. Guitar, vocals and songwriting alike. Jeff Buckley was too good for this world

Alles op dit album zit precies goed. De harde stukken zijn net zacht genoeg. De zachte stukken komen hard genoeg binnen. Jeff heeft ook een stembereik van jewelste. Heel hard van genoten, ondanks ik maar 1 nummer kende

Jeff Buckley’s only studio album during his lifetime. It is hard to objectively review without mentioning his enormous potential. As a stand alone album it is inconsistent, but worth listening to for the high points, including his monumental cover of Hallelujah.

Just a phenomenal album from start to finish. It's a real tragedy that this was all that was released in his lifetime because this was something special. "Lover, you should have come over" is fantastic, full of raw passion and emotion which soars and takes you on a journey, and of course "hallelujah" is probably a top 10 cover of all time. This fusion of rock, blues, pop, and folk really works for me and his vocals feel authentic. Like he means every word he sings.

Grace is such a perfect title for this. We are essentially hearing Jeff Buckleys thoughts, wishes and ambitions spilled out onto the record. His beautiful Hallelujah dead center on the album is a wonderful choice. What a breathtaking production. A heart on sleeve masterwork.

Why was Jeff Buckley taken so soon? Favourites: "Mojo Pin", "Last Goodbye", "So Real", "Hallelujah", "Forget Her" (Bonus)

The title track is a behemoth of a song His vocals are insane! Splendid songwriting and even better production. RIP Jeff

Go through phases on this between liking it and loving it… today was a loving it day!!

Already Heard

Somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. It's adventurous in its choice of covers, beautifully sung, and the original material is pretty good as well. I know its a classic of its kind, so lets give it 5

I'm not sure that back-to-back songs can get much better than "Hallelujah" and "Lover You Should Have Come Over." Those were the two Jeff Buckley songs I was most familiar with, but I'm happy to say that I was nearly as blown away by the rest of the album. I likely heard it all the way through a few times, but again, 1994 produced such a prolific abundance of great albums that I probably wasn't ready to fully appreciate it in the mid-90s anyway. Buckley possessed one of the greatest voices in rock history, which was sadly constrained at both ends - first by spending the first decade of his career as a session musician and band member rather than as a lead singer, and then by his tragic death. That history exploring different collaborators and genres certainly benefited him though, and "Grace" wouldn't be the album of diverse and gorgeous sound it is without those experiences. The way these songs build, ebb and flow, rise and fall, is consistently beautiful and powerful. At times Buckley is the stripped-down mellow singer-songwriter, at times the pop rock lead man that reached musical heights that Chris Martin, Travis' Fran Healy, and many others could never match. At times Buckley embraces a very 90s sound, at times it feels like powerfully explosive classic rock of the early 70s, at times you can feel the influence of the wide variety of artists he had worked with early in his career. An incredible singer, but the voice only reaches the heights that it does because of the arrangements and musical vision.

1994 was one of the best years in music, maybe ever, and this album was part of the reason why. In contrast to the distortion and discontent coming from Seattle, Jeff Buckley made an album that was just as emotional and raw but beautiful. His vocal control is amazing as are his musical choices about when and how to use it. Lover, You Should Have Come Over is one of my top 10 favorite songs and was on just about every mixed tape I ever made. I even wrote a psychology paper on that song in undergrad, got an A :). That sigh before the first note of Hallelujah gets me every time. He may not have written it, but it's most definitely his song now. The opening of Last Goodbye sounds a little like it was ripped off by Oasis for Champagne Supernova (the "how many special people" part). And I actually love the way that So Real falls apart in the middle and then puts itself back together. This album is different and classic at the same time. Unlike some of the other music from '94, my love for this album has only grown and that speaks to the wide array of musical styles from which it draws inspiration. That range is apparent in who has claimed to be influenced and inspired by Buckley. Everyone from Adele to PJ Harvey, Radiohead to Lana Del Rey. Hell, Jimmy Page said this album was close to being his favorite of the decade and David Bowie said it was one of the 10 albums he would bring to a desert island. I gotta agree with the greats on this one.

We both loved it. As Ian observed it is certainly not “background music” - it is rather intense and demands to be listened to! It is very beautiful

Never gave the whole album a chance. Guitar is stellar. Lilac Wine + the hits, great album.

One of the best albums of the '90s. Jeff's angelical voice and passion fill each track of this masterpiece of an album. Truly a gem, considering the fleeting life and tragic downfall of Tim Buckley's son.

This was an unexpected surprise. I didn't like all the songs, but the whole album is great. I think that this is the first absolutely unknown for me that really deserved 5 stars.

SUBLIME

Amazing 😻 I love it

I can listen to this album on repeat. High-level vocals, great melodies, easy to listen.

I have always been hypnotised by this album!! (I don't only love it because we share a name). I cannot believe his voice, my brain actually cannot compute that that is his voice, especially on this version of Lilac Wine. I admire Leonard Cohen in a different way, and his poem, Hallelujah, is obviously legendary, also love the way he performs it. However, I love Jeff Buckley's version and you can't make me decide which I prefer. I'm not one of these purists who needs it to be Cohen only though, I grew up with Jeff's version and I find it mesmerising. This whole album is orgasmic and stunning. To me, it is pure perfection.

Well its obviously a K town 5 star banger! I'm delighted this is on the list. I love this album and think its a piece of art. Certain music snobs write off Buckles because of Hallelujah cos they're sick of it or whatnot, but I don't even care about that song. Listen to "Lover you should have come over" - one of my favourite songs of all time and musically exceptional. Mad chord progressions and the tension and epicness - I can barely handle it. Beautiful album. Love you Jeffy B

A magnificent piece of work. Such a good sound but still very varied. What a talent.

For some reason, the vocal speaks to me. I like it's ever-changing nature, going back and forth from low-key speak-singing to high-pitch wailing, switching between acoustic guitars and heavy fuzzy riffs, and so on. Interestingly, this album's lower BPM makes it even more relatable. Cool.

This album is an all time classic

First time listening, re-listened 1.5 more times after. Heartfelt and haunting.

There aren’t enough stars for this album. Beautiful, haunting, powerful soaring melodies over intricate guitar lines and driving rhythms. There’s not a bad song here, Lilac Wine & So Real are my favs

mojo pin 4/5 grace 4/5 last goodbye 4.5/5 lilac wine 4/5 so real 4.5/5 hallelujah 5/5 lover you should come over 4.5/5 corpus christi carol 3.5/5 eternal life 3.5/5 dream brother 4/5 forget her 5/5 (fav track) overall 85% !

Discovered this one in college through a friend and it really floored me the first time I heard it in a way that only a handful of albums ever have. I was a little obsessed with it for awhile and tried to spread the love for it to anyone I came in contact with. Of course, like many intensely emotional albums, I associate this one pretty strongly with an equally intense relationship I was in at the time which has long since ended. So, I don't revisit this one often for that reason because it calls up some fairly painful memories, but it doesn't diminish this album's power for me in the least. I enjoy the first few songs for their strong dynamics but the first song on the album to really gives me goosebumps is "Lilac Wine." His voice is so powerfully emotive that I find it is more effective in a sparer arrangement. It's funny, normally with most singers I wouldn't enjoy the way the vocals are so intimately recorded with nearly every breath audible and presented so front and center in the mix but his voice is such a marvel that I enjoy soaking up every detail. Then of course you get to his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" which is one of those rare songs where his interpretation is so masterful that it has become the definitive version in my eyes, in the same way that something like Jimi Hendrix's version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" eclipses its original. His ability to see the power inside that song and draw every last ounce of emotion out of it is not only a stroke of genius but also an amazing feat of talent in its flawless execution. It left me nearly breathless the first time I heard it.
