A beautiful album and a new favourite of mine. I especially liked forget her
Great album. I love it
"Lover, you should've come over"... I felt it! Loved this entire album!
Wasn't expecting much but what a great surprise this album was. Amazing voice and kudos to the production.
Really sad, like someone needed to ask him if he was okay.
10/10, no notes, beautiful album, i miss him
Favourites: 1. Forget Her 2. Lover, You Should've Come Over 3. Dream Brother Least Favourite: Corpus Christi Carol
Lindo. Sabe, o clichê do artista boêmio sofredor? Forget Her, Mojo Pin, Grace, Lover You Should’ve Come Over… 5/5
I mean come on it's JB. Vocals are killer on this, I mean truthfully everything is. Hallelujah is still one of the best covers of all time. Vocals are a clear inspiration for Myles Kennedy and God Bless him for that. easily 9/10
Admittedly like most people I only knew hallelujah from this album. Throughout my listen, I was really surprised that while wonderful, it didn’t even make my top 3 song choices. Wonderful album that will be added to my regular rotation.
boundless emotion
Perfect, no notes. Forgotten how good some of these songs are
Just wow. What an extraordinary talent.
A life where I don't give this five stars wouldn't be worth living.
Holy crap! This album was so awesome. One of the very few that demanded my presence from the beginning. The songs are so emotive and the sound is all-encompassing. Such great use of build-up, release, and serenity. His cover of Hallelujah has always been a beautiful song, but in the context of the album it is amazing. This instantly is one of my favorite albums, after one listen.
one of the best albums of all time yep
So peak
The production on this album is something special. It’s raw, polished, balanced, and dynamic. One of the most incredible pieces of music to ever blessed my ears.
The dude had the GOAT voice.
This was my favourite album of all time at one point in my life. There was something truly special about that man, RIP
While I neither need or want to hear “Hallelujah” again as long as I live, the rest of the album still feel strikingly singular, even considering how influential it has been. For how often Buckley’s keening falsetto and lovelorn lyricism have been imitated by indie bands over the years, few if any of them were able to create albums as feral as Grace feels. It truly sounds like an album he had to wrench out of himself because not doing so would be unbearable.
This album is a masterpiece. The amount of emotion portrayed through each song is unmatched. You can hear and even feel his emotions through his singing, making listening a melancholy experience. The instrumentals aren’t super complex, but they do a great job at supporting the vocals and helping them create a bigger impact. I also love the use of low guitar riffs and the organ throughout the tracks, adding a unique texture. My favorite track is Forget Her because of the sheer emotion in his voice and the build within the instrumentals at the end. It’s always the song I find myself belting whenever it comes on. It never fails to get me in my feels.
Easily my favourite Album I've listened to so far through this. My favourite tracks are Lover, You Should Come Over and So Real. Buckleys Version on Hallelujah is also incredible, but I feel like its hard to fuck up a pretty much perfect song. His voice is incredible, just goes straight into my heart and soul. Makes me sad for all the music we never got to hear him sing.
Visceral and beautiful
Beautiful, tragic, an all round incredible album. RIP Jeff Buckley
9/10 - This is a Top 30 album for me. Love the songwriting, the music, the vocals. One skip in my opinion.
Now this is strange. I've mentioned this album maybe 5 times in the past week, hell I even got a copy of it for Christmas. So I am well aware of this album and I will be blunt; I think it's fantastic. While I can't deny the other comments made are valid, Jeff certainly has a way of "giving it his all" but I just think if you dislike it you should revisit it at a lower point in your life. This album is beautiful, earnest in its writing and performance and Jeff's voice is incredible. Even if it's the slow focus like in Hallelujah he takes you away and you feel every ounce of yearning and sorrow. If I were to ask someone their favourite male singer and they said Jeff Buckley I am nodding my head and saying "I see it", it's well within the argument. I also won't lie or pretend like his passing doesn't add a layer to this album. It was his only full fledged release before his death and while I wasn't even alive before he passed there is always a certain sorrow of "what could have been" with an artist who makes something incredible and then just vanishes from our lives. Usually I would maybe say the album is a little long, but I wouldn't actually cut any songs from this album at all. It might be through the benefit of hindsight knowing he won't ever release another but this album has no misses. It has no weak points, even the quote "worst song" is an 8 and of incredible quality... but there are definite high points. While the cover of Hallelujah sticks out for man the follow up "Lover, You Should've Come Over" takes the cake for me. This album has a number of perfect songs but this is an 11, it has that ethereal feeling and if you hear this at a time in your life when you're young and heartbroken it will never let you go. Best songs: Lover, You Should've Come Over / Grace / Forget Her Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 3/34 (Below Good Kid Maad City, above Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite)
A lovely album from an artist gone too soon
Years since I've heard this and it's a classic. The rendition of Hallelujah is beautiful.
Not sure how many more albums on this list will be better than this.
PERFECT ALBUM 1!!!!!!
10/10
stunning front to back
Dang, I dig this! Four songs into an album I’m not at all familiar with, and I was already ready to give it 4-stars. It’s interesting, dynamic, and clearly worthy of multiple listens. There are hints of Radiohead or Neutral Milk Hotel in the songwriting, but it definitely has its own distinct signature. Yeah, no. It's a 5-star album. I'm hooked!
Its one of my favorites albums. It was my number 1 album of 2025 on spotify wrapped!
Ohhhhhhhhh just beautiful, I am sad. What he would have done!!
NAHHHHHHH WHHHHATTTTTTT I feel like this first song isn't supposed to work but it somehow does. Like this song had me moving without me even noticing. Absolute banger way to open it bruv. I love when white people put their foot in their music😌🔥 Whatever that vacuum cleaner was in the middle of So Real caught me offguard, but when he started singing again after it was chef's kiss THIS MAN DID A COVER OF HALLELUJAH. Not quite as hitting in the feels as the smash mouth version but still highly good The 90s was a great time for music. I wish I couldve heard him perform this album at a concert Every song got added except Hallelujah since I already got Smash Mouth's version This album impressed me just as much as the Mariah Carey album, but these songs actually sound like ones I would listen to in my day-to-day All in all, phenomenal album Best song: Last Goodbye 10/10
No words….
I loved it.
Very beautiful very sad
One of my favourite albums ever
walked so radiohead could stumble into zionism, ily forever jeff <3
Love this album!
Anyone who knows me knows I love this album. Buckley's voice is just insane. It gets really heavy and loud at points, a very quiet/loud 90s sound with a more delicate texture than most rock artists. The guitar is almost like a character in this universe, it has its own dialogue and agency. Buckley really makes that thing sing. I find this album soulful, desperate, and haunting, in a classically tragic sort of way. Buckley does Simone so beautifully, too.
Beautiful
One of the best albums ever made. It’s hard to put his music into a genre, it goes places that are inspirational for other musicians
Praise Jah
Great
yay an album i own already!! i love jeff. this album reminds me of winter time during my undergrad. whiny, delicate, pining. had most of it saved already, but now the whole album's def going into my rotation. saved: everything!
One of the few albums I think are perfect. I have a lot of emotional feelings caught up in this album, it being tied closely to a friend who has passed away, but even before that this album felt so heavy to listen to. You can really feel the outpour of emotions from Buckley on every second of this record. It’s one of music’s great tragedies that we didn’t get more of his art to enjoy. He really is one of the all time greats, and this album will forever be a classic.
Amazing album one of my favs of all time! 10/10 back to back
One of the best albums ever! It's so sad that this is the only album he released while he was alive. Every song is great, the arrangements are pretty complex, and his voice is just unique, so haunting and beautiful. I don't really know what else to say, it's a perfect record. An undeniable talent, taken away from us too soon.
So beautiful so many tears just so beautiful
It really is one of the best!!
I've been waiting patiently for Grace to show up here. What a masterpiece. I remember having a total musical epiphany when I was first made aware of this album around 20 years ago. I knew Hallelujah but hearing what else Buckley was capable of blew my mind. The first seven tracks are pure gold; it weakens a little from Corpus Christi Carol onwards but by the time you make it there you're already beyond engrossed. God only knows what would have become of him, had he not perished at such a premature age.
10/10 Thinking about this album and how often I revisit it, I wonder if it’s the single album that I’ve listen to most in my life. Whatever musical moment I’m in at any one time, there’s always been time to spin Grace, and it was nice to listen to this in a different way, taking specific notice to the nuances of an album that is so familiar to me. Frankly, this album is glorious in almost every conceivable way. Jeff writes songs that frequently dip into various sections and evolve as they progress so that nothing ever gets stale, but equally he never forgets to anchor that range around a core song that keeps everything tightly on theme. He writes so many little hooks, some of which are fleeting, and some which a song returns to time and again. But nothing is ever repeated too often, in part thanks to the constant evolution, ebb and flow of the composition around those themes. It’s funny, because while people don’t often categorise it as such, there are some very strong elements of grunge to this album and, for me, that helps to give it the kick and drive that provides a significant element of its momentum. The performances from the rest of the band are perfect at allowing the songwriting to shine, striking a beautiful balance of doing enough to enhance but never overwhelm. Matt Johnson’s drumming is particularly noteworthy, but everyone plays their part in creating an organically moving bed of sound that just elevates every moment. And then we come on to Jeff’s vocal. He’s one of the most emotive to ever do it. He can sing with depth and grit, woody mid-range and soaring falsetto, often within a bar or two of one another. He’s melodramatic, but in the most believable way possible, dragging out the pain, anger, heartbreak and occasional humour in his subjects in a way that feels like the overwhelming pit of emotion that one can find themselves in from time to time, even if you're self-aware enough to know you’re being a drama queen. It’s also a stunningly well produced album. You can hear Andy Wallace’s experience of working with bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth and L7. There’s a great deal of punch when required, but the nuance of production that allows the quiet parts to breathe beautifully while the most intense parts kick with fire and fury. The world was robbed of a magnificent talent when we lost Jeff Buckley, but to have this album as a legacy is more than most could even dream of. It has every right to be considered among the truly great albums of all time, and Jeff one of our greatest and most emotive singers. It’s just a remarkable achievement for anyone, let alone a man making his debut studio recording. I’m off to listen again Mojo Pin - It’s a lovely slow burn of an intro. There’s a lot of depth to it, with a lot of little parts that could easily go unnoticed on first listen. The movement of the guitar arpeggiations is really pretty and the shuffling, jazzy beat from Matt Johnson just gives the song a beautiful drifting sound. There’s so much dynamic to the composition, with bits that swell into grungy aggression, and parts that are almost whisper-quiet. And Jeff's voice is spectacular. He builds it up, he tails it off, he uses vibrato in all the right places. Just beautiful. Grace - The opening guitar line to this goes through my head at least once a week. It’s just wedged in there as one of my most internally referenced musical motifs in my life. Again, the dynamic range of this is so good as it builds in intensity, and it's actually packed with hooks. There are subtle shifts in tone throughout the track, and the changing emphasis of the rhythm is so, so satisfying. Jeff really gives it some here, and we get so much grit from him in places, as well as the soaring falsetto, but it’s never lacking the emotional punch. Last Goodbye - There’s so much movement through various sections in Jeff’s writing and this is a fine example. But he can also write mean hooks too. There’s loads of drive and pace to this song, but that never overtakes the beauty of the songwriting and vocal. The drumming is brilliant, the string arrangements are just so excellent and full and there’s a great blend of rhythms across the other parts too. And then you have Jeff deliver this pleading, yearning, desire-filled vocal over the top. Lilac Wine - And now, we get a stripped back cover. Everything is super restrained and pretty and Jeff’s vocal just ebbs and flows in intensity. The orchestration allows so much space for everything to breathe, and that dynamic range that’s present across the record is here again. It's a showcase of the subtle side of his vocal talents and it’s just a super well executed and beautifully performed song. So Real - There’s something beautifully unsettling about the composition of the verses here. It’s full of unresolved tension and unnerving chord choices. The choruses build in intensity from the first to the second and then we get an almost Nirvana-esque cacophony that drifts us back to that tension-filled verse. Dynamic range, baby! And it just closes with a brilliant tension resolution. Hallelujah - Is this the greatest cover version of all time? It’s in with a shout. It’s just an exquisite performance. Again, it builds, ebbs and flows in such a glorious way. There's so much movement in the guitar and Jeff tears every single drip of emotion out of his body and through his vocal cords into the lyrics. There are sneering moments, sombre moments, uplifting moments and bereft moments. It’s simply a vocal performance masterclass and it’s beautiful. Lover, You Should've Come Over - The lilting, slightly dragging rhythm of this is so sweet. We get subtlety in the vocal early doors, but there’s still that tiny edge of grit that surfaces in fleeting moments. And the song just builds as it goes. He just refuses to adhere to a simple structure, with the composition shifting and evolving, but never going too far from the soul of the song. It’s melodrama in the best possible way. Just another beautiful journey of a song. Corpus Christi Carol - Similarly to Lilac Wine, we get another palate cleanser of a stripped back cover. It’s super pretty, if perhaps a little less compositionally interesting than the originals on the album, but it’s another lovely vocal performance and serves as a nice breath before we dive into the last couple of tracks. Eternal Life - And we dive into this one with a kick. I love the rolling, broiling rhythm of this track. It’s a fiery and driven song and is the most flat out rocker on the album. There’s so much intensity to it, and some of the instrumental tones are glorious. The bass, for example has got so much grime all over it, but it serves the song so well. And amidst the tempestuous instrumental storm, Jeff’s vocal swims atop the waves, diving in and soaring out of the grungy deep. Dream Brother - Another brooding, pulsing composition. Another where Matt Johnson’s drums are a perfect shuffling heartbeat to the track. The bass is so clean but has a bone-shaking solidity to it too. As with much of the album, there are more quality explorations of dynamic range, and the rhythms of the different parts creates an ever moving bad of tone and rhythm. It captures that dreamy quality, but with an undercurrent of nightmare just bubbling away beneath the surface. Jeff’s vocal is angelic as always, but there’s always that little bit of bite that he dips into nopw and again to give it extra weight and range. A great way to close out the album.
Our Last Goodbye. Pure bliss. One of the greats.
One of the most gifted and angelic singers to have crossed the planet. Leonard Cohen salutes with a Halleluiah
Picked up on this album a good few years after it first came out, absolutely love it.
This album is great. It's really mind-blowing. There is a lot of variety, but it doesn't lose interest or the hook, instead, it gets so much power. It's both, haunting and beautiful, magnetic and energetic. I've loved listening to it, it's such a great one, for sure.
No private session used for Spotify. I have listened to this album a lot over the past few decades. I love a lot of the songs on this album and don't dislike any. His guitar and voice are awesome and he knows how to get the most out of both.
This is an 11/5
Maybe my favourite album
Awesome
Maybe I was too young when I listened to this before, but I always thought I didn't particularly like it. I revoke that judgment. It's gorgeous and sad and beautiful.
Favorite Track: Hallelujah
Haunting, soft and ethereal. His voice feels so deeply emotional in every lyric, and every moment. A classic album that everyone needs to listen to, at least, once in their lifetime.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL THE TIME.<<<333 I SUGGEST THE LIVE VERSION TOO! HIS VOICE, HIS EYES, HIS LYRICS,HIS LIFE, HIS EVERYTHING... EVERYTHING IS TRAGICALLY BEAUTIFUL ABOUT HIM :)
really loved this, wish i had gotten a chance to take a bath while listening to it. totally unexpected voice
Devastating
One of the bests musics albuns of ALL TIME!!
one of the few albums where i not only like every song, but also find it difficult to choose a favourite (fyi hallelujah is competing for last place) and yeah, i get that music is subjective, but cmon guys so many 1 stars? have you heard any other albums from this book? if this is a 1, maybe a new scale should be invented for some of those "classics" i'm sure some of you gave 5 stars to just because you have such great taste
This album. THIS ALBUM. Thirty-one years since its release and this is still one of my favourite albums. Deeply romantic, introspective and fiery. There was nothing like it back in 1994. Still isn't.
One of my all time faves. We lost him way way too young
Greatest album of all time actually.
121/1089 one song in and i REALLY like his voice, and kind of distant/dreamy production on the instruments is captivating hearing some Neighbourhood/Turnstile precursor in So Real, vocal style and vocal production-wise ooh wow this rendition of Hallelujah… I’m sure i’ve heard parts of it before but hearing it in full is something else Corpus Christi Carol into Eternal Life was great. This whole project has felt so special, i’m not sure what more i can add. he was so laser-focused on his sound, there’s variety in vocal and style but it still all fits together so smoothly and i can see this album growing on me even more Lilac Wire and Corpus… were the omly songs i didn’t save but even then they were really good inclusions faves: Mojo Pin, Eternal Life, Lover Upu Should’ve Come Over, Grace, Last Goodbye 93/100
Jeff Buckley’s *Grace* (1994) is one of those rare debut albums that feels like a final statement even though it was just the beginning. Released when Buckley was only 27, it’s a haunting, emotionally raw, and musically ambitious record that has only grown in stature since his tragic death in 1997. Below is an in-depth review covering its **lyrics**, **music**, **production**, **themes**, **influence**, and a breakdown of its **pros and cons**. --- ## 🎤 **Lyrics: Poetic, Cryptic, and Vulnerable** The lyrics on *Grace* are deeply poetic, often abstract, and emotionally intense. Buckley’s writing draws from literature, spiritual imagery, and personal turmoil. Songs like *Lover, You Should’ve Come Over* and *Last Goodbye* explore heartbreak, regret, and longing with aching sincerity. Lines like *“Too young to hold on, and too old to just break free and run”* capture the emotional limbo of youth and love . Even the covers—*Hallelujah*, *Lilac Wine*, and *Corpus Christi Carol*—are reinterpreted with such emotional depth that they feel like originals. Buckley’s version of *Hallelujah*, in particular, strips the song down to its emotional core, emphasizing vulnerability over Cohen’s biblical grandeur . --- ## 🎸 **Music: Genre-Blending and Sonically Rich** Musically, *Grace* is a masterclass in dynamics and genre fusion. It blends **rock**, **folk**, **jazz**, **blues**, and **opera** into a cohesive sound that’s both ethereal and grounded. Buckley’s guitar work—often using alternate tunings and intricate fingerpicking—creates lush soundscapes. Tracks like *Mojo Pin* and *Dream Brother* ebb and flow with cinematic tension, while *Eternal Life* delivers a jolt of grunge-rock aggression . His vocals are the centerpiece—spanning a nearly four-octave range, moving from whisper-soft falsettos to full-throated wails. It’s not just technical prowess; it’s emotional delivery that makes every note feel earned. --- ## 🎛️ **Production: Polished Yet Organic** Produced by Andy Wallace, *Grace* balances lush production with emotional intimacy. The instrumentation is layered but never overproduced. Songs like *So Real* and *Grace* build from delicate verses to soaring choruses, with reverb-soaked guitars, Hammond organs, and tight rhythm sections adding texture without overwhelming Buckley’s voice . The album’s sonic clarity allows every element to breathe, making it feel both expansive and personal. --- ## 🧠 **Themes: Love, Mortality, and Transcendence** At its core, *Grace* is about **love**, **loss**, **mortality**, and **spiritual yearning**. Buckley often confronts death not with fear, but with a kind of acceptance. The title track, *Grace*, is about finding peace in mortality through love: *“It’s my time coming, I’m not afraid to die”* . Other tracks like *Eternal Life* wrestle with existential frustration, while *Lover, You Should’ve Come Over* is a meditation on regret and emotional burnout. The album feels like a spiritual journey—raw, unresolved, and deeply human. --- ## 🌍 **Influence: A Legacy That Keeps Growing** Though Buckley only released one studio album, *Grace* has influenced a generation of artists across genres. Musicians like **Radiohead**, **Coldplay**, **Adele**, and **Thom Yorke** have cited him as an influence. His vocal style—especially the use of falsetto—has become a template for emotive male singers in alternative and indie rock . The album’s reputation has only grown posthumously, with *Hallelujah* becoming one of the most streamed songs of all time and *Grace* being added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry . --- ## ✅ **Pros** - **Vocal Performance**: Arguably one of the greatest vocal performances in rock history. - **Emotional Depth**: Every song feels like a window into Buckley’s soul. - **Genre Fusion**: Seamlessly blends rock, folk, jazz, and opera. - **Timeless Production**: Still sounds fresh decades later. - **Influence**: Continues to inspire new generations of musicians. --- ## ❌ **Cons** - **Front-Loaded Tracklist**: The strongest songs are early on, which can make the second half feel slightly less impactful . - **Covers May Divide Purists**: While beautiful, some may feel the inclusion of three covers detracts from Buckley’s original songwriting. - **Corpus Christi Carol**: Though haunting, it feels like a stylistic outlier and disrupts the album’s flow for some listeners . --- ## 🏁 **Final Thoughts** *Grace* is more than an album—it’s a **spiritual experience**. It’s the sound of an artist laying everything bare, chasing beauty in pain, and finding grace in mortality. Even with its minor flaws, it remains one of the most emotionally resonant and musically rich albums of the 1990s. Jeff Buckley may have left us too soon, but *Grace* ensures his voice will never fade.
This is my second 5 star album so far - I, like a lot of people, only knew of Jeff Buckley through his cover of Hallelujah and nothing else. So naturally I was completely taken off guard by this album and the style it went in. To be honest it blew me away and I loved basically every track here. Jeff's voice is insanely good with a massive range, and the songwriting is very raw and open. I certainly wasn't expecting a lot of the alt rock sounds and even heavier sounds sometimes. It really embodies some of that 90s alt/even grungey style at times. I read that he is an influence on Matt Bellamy of Muse, and Radiohead, and I can definitely hear that. This was a fantastic album that took me by surprise, in a good way.
Loved this album since the first day that I heard it - if you have never listened to it don't delay any further - trust me
I am utterly embarrassed that the only Jeff Buckley song I knew before this album is his cover of Leonard Coen's "Hallelujah", and if I'm being honest, I don't even like it that much. It's fine, but I never understand the obsession with it. I knew he died and only ever published one album, but I kind of presumed that his stardom was catapulted by his untimely death and that he didn't have much else to bring to the table but a cover of someone else's beautiful song. Why did I hold this view of Jeff Buckley? I don't know. Ignorance can lead to drawing some pretty wacky conclusions. I knew about two minutes into the first song that I had royally fucked up my opinion of Buckley. These songs are so rich, so layered. His vocals, so much range...gritty and soulful one moment, high and soaring the next, always somehow fitting flawlessly with the instrumentals. The guitar work elegant yet still distinctly 90s with some grunge-esque influences. Unbelievably creative arrangements. I now get why people were so plussed by his death. Was he a genius taken too early? I don't know, but his music is damn good. This one is an instant keeper in my favorites.
A Mojo Pin 5 Grace 5 Last Goodbye 5 Lilac Wine 5 So Real 5 Hallelujah 3 Lover, You Should've Come Over 5 Corpus Christi Carol 3 Eternal Life 4 Dream Brother 5 Forget Her 5 One of the greatest of the greats. Been waiting a long time to rate this.
Sorry he’s gone
Phenomenal
One of the trifecta of musicians that I listened to on repeat for far too long when growing up so this is through heavily rose tinted glasses. His voice is possibly the greatest I have ever heard and the songs have a lilting beauty to them, from the lyrics to the chord progressions. His chord voicings give it continued interest, and the album showcases the range of talent he had. His tragic death has given it an almost mythical quality which might not be the same had he released some duds afterwards but I think hints at what other brilliant music he had in him to later release. Could be criticised by others as being oversung and the songs at times being a bit MOR - I don’t really care.
Call me a performative male cause this shit slaps. 10/10.
Sometimes, quite often actually, before I start listening to these daily albums, I like to do a deep dive into the band/artist that I’ll be spending my day with, and look at their Wikipedia pages to see what they’re all about. Man, after reading about Jeff Buckley’s story and all the people who he inspired, I was absolutely fiending to check this album out. This guy made 1 album, and then tragically drowned while fully dressed, singing a Led Zeppelin song at age 30. Insanity. God must have wanted this guy to sing for him personally in heaven, because it’s an actual sin that we only got him for a single album. I want more. Why am I giving this album 5 stars?? Because I hear a lot of Chris Cornell here, a friend of Jeff’s, and my favorite musician of all time. It may actually be crazy to say this, but I think Jeff may have better voice control. The places he goes with each and every note are nothing short of amazing. Not only does Jeff’s voice absolutely kick ass, but this album is a near perfect mix of absolutely electric, balls to the wall bangers where he sings his heart out, like in “Grace” and “Eternal Life”, while also including genuinely beautiful pieces as well, like “Hallelujah”. Then there are the songs that are somehow both at the same time, like “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over”. Wow. What an incredible album this was. I can’t believe there are artists that were this talented out there with albums this good, and I’d never have found them if it wasn’t for this site. This was truly something special. Favorite song? It’s gotta be the title track, “Grace”. I’m a sucker for the songs that rock the hardest after all.
Gorgeous, evergreen, lives to the hype
Jeff Buckley save the earth. return and save the Earth. Unbelievable.
Gone way too early. Looking forward to the new documentary.
Perfect
This is just an incredible record. I blame Buckley for popularizing Hallelujah, though.
dang
This is a perfect album
This album was a pleasant surprise. I think it's really difficult to pull off great heartfelt ballads, and Jeff Buckley succeeds multiple times on this album. Corpus Christi Carol kind of blew me away after listening to it a few times; the melancholy mood reminds me a lot of Sufjan Stevens. There are definitely a few songs off this album I'll be coming back to.
Mellow rock really good listening
always beautiful.
Holy shit
10/10 It’s just beautiful. No notes.
One of my personal favorites of all times. I'll always remember listening to this album for the first time and right after listening to Grace i went on to listen to almost all of his songs. I look forward to listen to it for like 20th time. Damned Mississippi river.
the closest a man has ever been to an angel
Fantastic Album, every song was a joy.
really good. each song is well done but each songs position on the album feels equally as crafted. heavy up front, light and emotional middle, heavy finish. damn hallelujah
This whole album was pure gourmet. No simple grilled cheese, each track had layers of complexity and spice running through to the finish, the flavours mingling and evolving right there in your mouth. Jeff really cooked here. This album is a perfect curry, the spices and herbs each adding their own weight but the rich gravy that is his voice carrying the whole affair on its back. I suppose Hallelujah is the naan then. I've said Grace, now let's dig in.
One of the albums that I've always felt I should listen to but never did. Buckley's voice is something special and their are some truly beautiful songs on here. I actually listened to this album 3 and a half times today and it was a special experience. This is what I was hoping I would come across during this journey!
275/1089 - I only knew the great "Hallelujah" cover before going into this but after listening this shot up to one of my top 20 albums. Really good musicianship and really varied voice and instrumentation throughout. Songwriting is right at my preferred level of complexity (approachable yet abnormal). Such an unfortunate ending, always be careful and know your surroundings especially in water.
5/5 immediately
Peak
This album absolutely deserves to be on the list to showcase Jeff's amazing vocals. Has a romantic sad boi vibes. Tracks to Track: Hallelujah
Legendary.
Overall 9/10 One of my favorite albums which makes the tragic passing of the artist a couple months later that much heavier. Track 1: Mojo Pin - A song of the time; bands like Radiohead and early Led Zeppelin can be heard in the vocal and instrumental melodies Track 2: Grace - The guitar in this song in particular really stands out in combination with Jeff's lyrical voice and melodic harmony Track 3: Last Goodbye - Upbeat and fun; super depressing lyrics Track 4: Lilac Wine - Ultra chill, musical poetry Track 5: So Real - The crash out song of the album Track 6: Hallelujah - Such a classic and so emotionally charged; beautifully written lyrics Track 7: Lover, You Should've Come Over - Such a sad, sad song; even more tragic as it relates to Jeff's passing shortly after. Track 8: Corpus Christi Carol - Very opera-like voice Track 9: Eternal Life - Its a bop, rock and roll; maybe playing into the popularity of Creed? Track 10: Dream Brother - The most forgettable on the album, witchy vibes Track 11: Forget Her - Late night depression, super relatable song personally
Really really great
Almost perfect to me. Just timeless. Favorite track: Forget Her 4.5/5
Brilliant
I have listened to this album about a million times and it has only gotten better
Jeff's voice is haunting, delicate yet powerful. The instrumentals provide a solid foundation for his voice to shine, and I liked that the album has such a varied sound.
Never really listened to Jeff Buckley before just passed me by for some reason but I loved this album
I had only known Hallelujah before, but listening to the whole album, I was amazed at the level of completion for a debut. It’s tragic that this is his only album. Buckley conveys emotion in a completely open and unguarded way. As a songwriter, singer, and guitarist, his skill is undeniable, and I can easily see why this album received such high praise. Some of the guitar tones, especially on Dream Brother, are so similar to Radiohead that I could almost imagine the track on OK Computer. Both Buckley and Radiohead share a kind of delicate tension in their sound. However, the biggest difference is in the emotional openness: Buckley’s vulnerability feels direct and unfiltered, while Radiohead often adds a layer of irony or abstraction.
I didn’t expect this to be this varied. All I knew of this one was “Hallelujah”, but this one is way more than that. Jeff Buckley really could do anything with true emotion, and could do it well. A great talent gone way too soon.
Beautiful álbum
One of my fav albums of all time. Such a shame he died such a tragic death. What a great talent.
A milestone in my musical journey
Very very nice!
Honestly can’t believe I’ve missed out on this. I knew hallelujah and that was it. I expected more like that and a boring album but holy shit.
This is an incredible album - I loved every song
Haven't listened to this album in years, but man is it good.
71 albums in and this is the first album unfamiliar to me to earn a full five stars—and it absolutely deserves it. I went in cold, with no nostalgic attachment or prior listens, except for Hallelujah, and came out stunned by its emotional depth and musical ambition. From the opening notes of the title track, Buckley’s voice commands attention. It’s delicate and soaring, often unpredictable, and at times eerily reminiscent of Thom Yorke—especially in the way he lets emotion guide the melody. But Buckley’s range is even more operatic, with a theatrical intensity that never feels forced. There’s a clear Led Zeppelin influence running through the album—not just in the guitar work and dynamic shifts, but in the mystical, almost spiritual atmosphere of tracks like “Mojo Pin” and “Dream Brother.” It’s like Buckley took the Zeppelin blueprint and infused it with vulnerability and grace. “Last Goodbye” and “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” are the emotional core of the album—aching, poetic, and timeless. These songs feel like they’ve always existed, waiting to be discovered. The only track that doesn’t quite fit is “Corpus Christi Carol.” It’s beautifully performed, but feels like a detour into a different world—more like a medieval interlude than part of the album’s emotional journey. It breaks the flow and feels slightly out of place. Still, that’s a minor flaw in an otherwise breathtaking debut. Grace is more than just a collection of songs—it’s a transmission of feeling, a deeply personal and spiritual experience. And for an album I’d never heard before, that’s a rare and powerful thing.
GRACE BY JEFF BUCKLEY!!!!!!! I actually tossed this one on a few days ago after the generator tossed me a total dud, to remind myself that albums can be good. Happy to listen to it again so soon lol.
It’s just powerfully good through and through
Literally the most life changing music ever
89/1001 Jeff Buckley - Grace Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ The highs are so high for this and the lows are still good songs. The vocal range Buckley has is just incredible. One of the first albums I purchased with my own money and one of the few that is constantly on my rotation.
For me, this is the greatest album of all time. Everything is perfect, the songs are long but dont overstay their welcome. The covers enhance the originals. There is a memorable intro to the album, it even ends with a catchy hit (which is always a welcome surprise seeing as many artists seem to put their moodiest track at the end). On a full listen its hard to determine what the singles were (but in a good way). It makes you want to wail like a banshee in a desperate attempt to even remotely sound like Buckley. Obviously the lyrics and guitar work is brilliant from Jeff, but lets leave some credit for the drummer who absolutely nails it. I've yet to get tired of this album and I'm gutted we couldn't get more from this superbly talented artist.
Musiikkityyli kyllä iskee omaan makuun kovempaa ku Tauski iskee naisia. Jotenki tosi siistejä juttuja biiseissä. Ensin tosi kaunista ja rauhallista laulua ja sitten siirrytäänkin huutolaulantaan todella saumattomasti ja yhtään häiritsemättä tunnelmaa. Piti ihan tutustuu enemmän tuotantoon ja löytyhän levyltä aivan hiton kova tuottaja. Meni kyllä itsellä yhtiin lemppari albumeista. Kuuntelin viikonlopun aikana useaan otteeseen ja tulen kuuntelemaan jatkossakin. Tää kyllä pitää saada fyysisenä rieskana myös. Alkoi jopa hieman postuumisti surettaa Jeffin traaginen poismeno nuorena.
Ourraid ourraid ourraid. Tätä on tullut aikanaan kuunneltua ja onhan tää edelleen hieno levy. Vaikee tehdä syväanalyyseja kun about kaikki on kohillaan.
Another perfect album from high school that still leaves me crying like a baby, had this one on vinyl so had to put it on :')
Wow this album caught me off guard. It starts out ok, but man does Buckley start showing off his enchanting voice as the album gets going. A seriously amazing vocal performance - great range and impressive control. I’m also struck by the range of sound the album brings with tracks like Eternal Life being quite heavy. Lyrically some very moving songs too like Grace in particular. Standouts for me are Eternal Life, Grace, and the cover of Hallelujah.
The guitar licks in Mojo Pin are really good. They're subtle but moving. The guitar work on this was great. Hallelujah is beloved but there was a lot on this album to enjoy.
Favorite tracks: Dream Brother, Eternal Life, Lover You Should Have Come Over Wow, what a range on this album. A lot of these songs left me uninterested and wanting more at the beginning, only to give me more than I could ever have asked for as they continue. Beautiful voice and a truly unique sound. Corpus Christi Carol and Eternal Life really took this album from 4 to 5 stars for me. Both came out of left field, but thoroughly impressed me!
9/10 Favourite: So Real Least Favourite: Dream Brother
I own this album so yeah, 5
Emotional.
Wonderful. Sometimes almost operatic. Heavy, moody music.
One of my favorite albums, ever. And, subjectively, one of the greatest albums, ever. Jeff was a once in a lifetime talent. His voice was beyond extraordinary, and to this day I don't think it's ever quite been matched. His effortless, balletic navigation of his Brobdingnagian vocal range; the raw emotion he miraculously injects into every syllable of his work; masterful songwriting, complete with covers that actually do something new and meaningful. Oh, and all of this was even stronger live. I'm always struck by a lyric in Mojo Pin: "Born again from the rhythm / Screaming down from heaven". And he is. It shouldn't have been this way. His death was a fluke, a complete unlucky accident. I suppose all we can do is be grateful that he strove to accomplish as much as he did in his short life, and revisit his work every so often to let him be reborn -- and scream again.
omg!!! this is one of my all time favorite records. always have, always will!!!
This is one of the greatest albums ever recorded, yet quite a few music critics just did not give it a chance. Some were confused about it, expecting it to be the next alt rock masterpiece, but Chris Cornell, alt rock god of Soundgarden fame, sure got it. The critics sang a different tune after Jeff’s tragic passing in 1997 while recording the follow-up to this record, coming around to how beautiful, lush, and all-around lovely this record is. Buckley uses his full range, from the haunting and dreamy high register of “Corpus Christi Carol” to the driving and funky alt rock anthem “Eternal Life". Other standouts are the bittersweet “Last Goodbye”, the tantalizing jazz standard “Lilac Wine”, the surreal love song “So Real”, and the stunning Leonard Cohen cover “Hallelujah”.
Simply a beautiful album. An all time.classic.
Didnt expect to recognize a good chunk of the album and really enjoy it. Technical skills were crazy on this one too, so even songs I didn’t care as much for were sublime regardless.
eu amo o jeff buckley 😭😭😭😭😭
Excellent album musically. Fantastic lyricism and vocal work. Not the first time I've listened to this, and it won't be the last either.
''As their shoes fill up with water'' blijft een spookachtige lyric, gezien zijn latere tragedie. 9/10 Highlights: Grace Lover, You Should've Come Over Forget Her
What a gift
Platonic ideal of 90s singer-songwriter rock
Y'know when an album just hits? Like, just feels good despite probably not being as good as other albums you've rated lower? Yeah, somehow Jeff Buckley has done that.
What a voice! So much emotion! A shame we couldn't still be enjoying his music.
Depression album starter pack, an essential.
Ah man, Jeff Buckley. What a damn tragedy. This album is beautiful, and has one of my most favourite guitar tracks ever on an album, So Real, which is the first song I properly learned on guitar. His voice is truly one of a kind, the range, the emotions, incredible. I like every track on this album. I could really talk for hours about it. 10/10 5/5 No notes.
This was a great album. Great vocals, great mix of music. Love, you should gave come over, forget her, hallelujah, lilac wine and eternal life are all bangers. Impressed it is his first album.
Great album! I actually listened to it twice I enjoyed it so much. I mean, Hallelujah was just such a good cover and high point that it made the rest look bad by comparison, but I enjoyed every song. Easy 5/5 for me.
Masterful, Inspiring, Sonically Stimulating, Individual, Simply Sublime, Inimitable, Perfectly Produced, Ingenious. An album you can really drown yourself in. Every song washed over me like the lapping waves of a major river in the American deep south.
Not my first stab at this album so had time to percolate my soul. I think it needs that effort and commitment to fully appreciate whats on offer. No one style describes this and its complex and intricate weaving of musical contributions amongst the band. Just when I think its getting a little weak the song pivots and hits you over the head with its brash verse. Like other albums that have hit the top note for me it just manages a different level of atmosphere. Like a church or some solid emotional reaction, it just has presence.
When I was first introduced to this album at university, I didn't really get it. I picked it up at some point during a covid lockdown nearly ten years later and immediately identified with it in a way that I hadn't been able to before. I expect this speaks to changes in my own emotional maturity... The hook for me was "Lover, You Should've Come Over", which is a beautiful song. The album works through some varied sounds and styles, but it is at its best with the rockier tracks that have Buckley's angelic vocals floating above them. He is such a charismatic performer and exudes a form of masculine sexuality mixed with vulnerability that I haven't heard from any other artist. Controversially, my least favourite tracks are the sickly sweet "Corpus Christi Carol" and the cover of "Hallelujah". Although they showcase. Buckley's impressive vocal range, they were what caused my initial aversion to the album. Luckily, there is so much more to love in this album and now those tracks exist as slower pace interludes. It's sad and unfair that Grace is the only full studio album we will ever get from Jeff Buckley but as legacy's go, its a beautiful one. It will always be a favourite of my music collection.
The super talented Jeff Buckley only had time to release one album and his destiny is one of the greatest tragedies in rock music. Grace is among the best debut albums of all time and the second to come (that was released as "Sketches for my sweetheart the drunk") sounded like a very promising continuation for it. One can only imagine what kind of heights his musical career could have achieved.
No notes.
Jeff Buckley had the voice of an angel. I've listened to this album 100s of times and must admit, my eyes get watery every time. His voice is truly haunting. The songs are powerful and melancholy. Even the rocked out and ironically titled Eternal Life showcase his amazing vocal talents. One of the most untimely and tragic losses in music history. This one and only complete studio album along with a handful of outtakes and half finished songs are all that's left to bear his testimony. 5/5 #166
Loved it. Obviously Hallelujah is amazing, but I was immediately hooked by Mojo Pin
Favourite songs: Mojo Pin, Hallelujah, Lover, You should've Come Over
A very soulful, emotionally charged album. It is quite an experience to just listen to Mr. Buckley put all that emotion into a song. It leaves you feeling deeply affected by his songs.
Phenomenal. I already knew a number of songs on the album, but listening to it front to back gave me a new appreciation for them in situ. Beautiful piece of art in songwriting and delivery. Every piece dripping with intense emotion. While the changeup in tone on Eternal Life initially caught me off guard to it's detriment, it really grew on me on re-listens. Many of these songs are going to be in consistent rotation for me, and I'd happily listen to the album again anytime. Solid 5/5.
Really enjoy this one. Extremely soulful, even captures a bit of a gospel vibe without feeling preachy. Hallelujah and Lover You Should've Come Over are both extremely solid tracks that I already had saved on Spotify. It also gets kinda hard out of nowhere on eternal life, that was a surprising transition. I have to wonder where his career could have gone if he didn't die tragically.
rip
A classic album, Hallelujah still pulls on the heart strings. Some other songs that I hadn't heard before. 5/5
Omg...I am so impressed with Jeff Buckley. He is so much more than Hallelujah. His voice is very unexpected. I love his style too, there was only one song on the album I didn't like so much.
Classic. Perfect
Come on now, a classic
I've already listened to his album (4). Cult for a reason. Not a bad thing to say about it.
Fucking beautiful. If there was any justice in the world, Jeff would still be alive and would be the biggest music star on the planet right now.
Excellent. Too little from him sadly. Great covers in here too. Great vocals. 4-5 stars.
oki love this a lot honestly
Perfection
I love the control he has in his voice. Every song is intriguing. The opening notes of Lover make me SO excited. Some people may think this album is overrated, but that's not a reason to not like the great songs on this album. Emotional and unique and interesting. Wonderful debut album. Good job Jeffy B
Grace by Jeff Buckley is an album I’d always intended to hear in full but, for one reason or another, never quite got around to—until today. I was genuinely excited to finally give it my undivided attention. What struck me most was its range: it moves effortlessly from soaring, impassioned rock to delicate, heartfelt ballads, with subtle threads of prog and psychedelia woven throughout. Expansive yet perfectly cohesive, it’s a stunning showcase of Buckley’s extraordinary talent—both as a vocalist and as a musician. This is an album I’ll return to time and again. Favourite track: Every song is excellent, but “Grace” and “Hallelujah” stand out. Least favourite track: None—there isn’t a weak moment here. Album artwork: Iconic and instantly recognisable.
Great voice and gone too soon.
I challenge anybody to find a more angelic voice than Jeff Buckley’s. I knew I enjoyed his music, but I’d never heard this album in full before. I think that Hallelujah might be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I know it was Leonard Cohen initially, but Jeff Buckley really perfected it. From beginning to end here, nothing falls flat. Also, I just read about how he died and now I’m miserable. Imagine being the tugboat driver that accidentally killed Jeff Buckley. How would you even cope?
I've not listened to this in years. Yes it's overwrought. It's also exceptional.
Peak
Definitely not my first time listening but happy to have the excuse LOVE this album :))
This album is absolutely fantastic! So many beautiful songs. And it is an impressive feat when you can take a legendary song and make it ever more well known than the original. Amazing album to listen to on a calm evening.
trop bien incroyable quel vocaliste le goat
Brilliant from start to end. Incredible vocals and arrangements. Already looking forward to the next listen.
It's reputation as a classic is well deserved. Aside from his virtuosic vocals, the song writing is top tier. The chord progressions are interesting, the use of dynamics is fantastic, this isn't your standard singer songwriter stuff. He's also a fantastic guitarist. Easy 5
Last goodbye Hallelujah Lover you should come over Forget her
What a prodigious talent
Heavenly Gold.
Was a big fan of So Real through Spotify random recommendations but never looked up who the artist was, until now. Great chord progressions, great album. Ahead of its time definitely.
# Album Name: Grace # Artist: Jeff Buckley # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Great album. JB's vocals are immense. Theres such a diverse range of music on the album but its all TOP quality. The Album is a tad too long for me. Could have been shortened. Still a great listen. # Top Tunes: Mojo Pin / Grace / L goodbye / Lilac wine / So Real / Hallelejuah / Eternal life # Would I listen to it again? Oh yeah
a couple of production proclivities and stylistic cross-pollinations indicate that this was in fact recorded in the early 90s but other than that im not sure theres much overtly tethering this to Any decade, at least on this planet. but im not sure i wanna use such otherworldly language anyway...i can imagine hearing this as a Mystical record but its very grounded and specifically sensory to me, every song is a lived-in room with a bunch of scattered objects that tell u a little something about the people who spend time there. jeff's voice is far too full of character and thoughtful choices to be written off the way some people write it off, he's gotta be doing something right if he can take on a song i know from nina simone and have me not come out the other end disappointed. never been one of my very very favorite albums personally but its involving and moving and Singular from front to back, its got a ton of space for the listener while being vibrantly specific and expressive, definitely an album you Visit in the same way i visit the likes of yankee hotel foxtrot. it certainly Should be a lot of people's very very favorite album
Very detailed guitar use that sounds random but right
Never listened to him before and ended up really loving it overall and especially certain tracks.
In the words of Walter White: ‘JEFF! NO, JEFF! DON’T GO SWIMMING IN THE WOLF RIVER HARBOUR THERE’S TUGBOATS JEFF!’ This is such a well written and well performed album. Jeff’s vocal range is astounding, his ear for unique chords and chord progressions enviable as guitarist, and the album’s blend of heavier riffs and beats, and subtler, quieter moments give it an engaging and dynamic flow, making it’s 50+ minute run time feel like a breeze. The drums and bass, while not the focal point, are perfectly fitted to the songs, and the bass tone on Eternal Life might be one of my favourites I’ve ever heard. I know it’s a cover but Hallelujah is performed perfectly. The mysterious, haunting, finger picked opening, followed by the pay off of the chord change at around 0:45 is genuinely one of the most satisfying tension/reliefs ever put to record. It might start to feel a little overperformed by the end, but by that point I don’t care! Every time I listen to this album, I like and appreciate it even more. It’s an easy 5 and a testament to Buckley’s legacy. Mojo Pin (10/10) Grace (8/10) Last Goodbye (8/10) Lilac Wine (7/10) So Real (9/10) Hallelujah (10/10) Lover, You Should’ve Come Over (8/10) Corpus Christi Carol (8/10) Eternal Life (10/10) Dream Brother (8/10) Forget Her (8/10) 8.5/10
Complete album with catchy tunes and skillful instrumentation with wide range. Another 5 star 1001 album find. Favorite track: Last goodbye other picks: grace, lilac wine, hallelujah, lover
One of my favorites, incredible album, no notes 5/5
Grace is a stunning album which makes you wonder what Jeff Buckley could have achieved had he lived. It opens with "Mojo Pin", reminiscent of Led Zeppelin as is the title track which immediately follows. Both feature a swirling collage of sound, full of surprises, with Buckley's etherial voice floating over the top. Other tracks, like "Last Goodbye" and the beautiful "Lover, You Should've Come Over" echo Radiohead in places, but in reality Grace doesn't really sound like anything else. The melodies are gorgeous and build, slithering snakelike through the songs. The covers of "Lilac Wine" and "Hallelujah" are definitive, Buckley makes them his own. His guitar playing is excellent throughout; reportedly a virtuoso, he never shows off at cost to the song. The band and the string arrangements complement his voice perfectly. And what a voice - to go from the clear bell-like falsetto in Britten's "Corpus Christi Carol" to the grit of "Eternal Life" is incredible, unrivalled. Truly, and unfortunately, a one off....
No notes. Just an awesome album.
One of the prettiest alt rock albums to have ever graced the 90s. It's a damn shame that this is Jeff Buckley's only release before he passed.
Biased review because I had already loved this album. The progression of emotion is perfect, his voice is unique and trained, the composition of each song is solid. I’ll admit there’s a little filler. 9.5/10
My boy!
This is a good as it gets. Originals are spot on and not many songs you can say the cover is better than the original. Loat out on a lot of potential music with his passing.
Classic
Holy fuck. A must relisten. All of the songs blended together on first listen and I never lost interest the entire time. I think "So Real" was my favorite the second time through, but so much greatness it's hard to say for sure. Wow wow wow wow wow
Album 228. What a meaningless milestone. I anticipated that this album would come along further down the line than it has. My dad recently asked me to listen to this album. You know how that goes. It’s easy for me to come on here and trash albums that I have no personal attachment to, but a familial recommendation?? That takes on a different context. I listened to this album about a month ago and found it to be unbearable by the end; however, since then, the songs have come through individually and have been quite enjoyable. All this boring preamble to say, I have heard this, so hopefully second time is the charm. I hated HIS dad’s record (Tim Buckley), but will MY dad come through with the solid recommendation? Stay tuned folks. Mojo Pin - The atmosphere is so strong here. Excellent vocals. A really compelling track. Somehow the pretension is quelled as this feels genuine in the face of a voice I’d be tempted to hate. Grace - This a bizarre track and I think in the best possible way. It just goes everywhere. That addictive warble on the chorus, and the extended “freakoutro” (™️) tie up a song that sounds like ascending from purgatorial anguish to the afterlife. Last Goodbye - We’re getting more radio friendly on this one. There are still interesting musical choices and that riff is pretty good, but this one wouldn’t be out of place playing quietly in a tanning salon. Not a full on miss, especially with the beautiful little close, but not a hit. Lilac Wine - See, don’t say “put my heart in its recipe.” It’s gripping, and for a song that every opportunity to be painful to listen to, it really never verges into that territory. Yes, there was one mildly cringeworthy lyric, but this moves along nicely. So Real - This guitar riff almost sounds like Slint. HOLY SWEET HELL that guitar solo and buzzing bass. Fucking Christ. This song is a juggernaut. Hallelujah - The Lenny Cohen hour. Sure, it’s overplayed, and everybody thinks it’s beautiful, but sometimes things are evergreen. This is a beautiful song, and it’s performed absolutely incredibly here. Moving. Lover, You Should’ve Come Over - Are we pronouncing lover and over the same way here? Really quirked up now. I don’t think he will. Whatever. Love whatever instrument that is at the start. That’s cool. I lack the musical knowledge or access to the general vocabulary to describe the shifts in guitar tone that make this song interesting. It’s almost undulating like the genesis of waves. Gently rocking the listener, but also producing an uneasiness that keeps your interest throughout. Corpus Christi Carol - His voice is insane. It’s way beyond what you’d expect from an album labelled “pop/rock.” Damn near operatic. Beautiful song. And to think I expected a departure into hoedown music detailing the best hootenannies to be had in that Texas town. Eternal Life - I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been tryna be lately. Sorry. I won’t invoke that disgustingly horrible song while THIS riff plays. Where does this shit come from? When that bass hits, good lord. Yeah this goes hard. From medieval opera dirge, to driving modern rock. We’ve got something brewing here. Dream Brother - Hey Dream brother. We have the same dream. I’ve made a lot of “enjoying music” rules. Maybe there are no rules. Promise a million times you’ll never do another rule. Forget Her - Some chill white guy blues?? Why am I even enjoying that?? What is wrong with me? Am I being seduced by the evils of white guy blues?? If they keep playing guitar like that, then I’ll be setting up residency at the hard rock cafe in no time. Context is king. Music is not meant to be fully experienced upon first listen. If it is, then that’s usually what clogs up the charts until the golden plunger descends, flushing out the top 40, only to be followed closely by another pile of palatable refuse. The stuff that sticks around forever is the challenging stuff. I still stand by my 1s, my harsh reviews, but I acknowledge that if something is to grow on me, it needs time to do so. If I would’ve rated this album a month ago, I would’ve slapped a 2 on it and resumed my thousand yard stare towards the Britpop/new wave album that will assuredly be accosting me tomorrow morning. With time and a sympathetic ear, I am blown away. This is high art that scratches any intellectual itch you may have whilst also appealing to base humanity in such a vulnerable way. I don’t get the stench of “this is meaningful because he died young.” I expected that coming in, but this stands on its own. Highly influential to all of your favourite artists and very, very impactful on second listen. Worth every second of my attention and one that will assuredly get richer with time. 4.5-5 HIGHLIGHTS: Mojo Pin, Grace, So Real, Hallelujah, Eternal Life
This album is like drinking two glasses of red wine and then getting into your swimming pool on a still starry night. You lie on your back, and make no movements while looking up at the night sky, marvelling at the universe. Your garden is light up by the moonlight and the quiet warmth of the pool lighting envelops you as you drift slowly around the pool. You don’t want this moment to end.
One of my favourite albums of all time, I love the instrumental mixed with the raw emotion his lyrics provide creates pure art. Considering this is his first album makes me quite sad on what we might have missed out on with his death. 6/5 stars, not a bad song in this album.
Forgotten about Jeff Buckley, so good to hear his tones again.
I love this album, I'm just sad that he didn't get to make any more
What an expertly crafted album. The artistry on display here is nothing short of monumental. A high for the medium as a whole.
Masterpiece
I don't think I can thing of many albums more legendary than this one, so I was incredibly hyped to listen to it for first time! Thankfully, it more than lived up to the hype. A lot of the album just sounds plain good. Like there is a lot of sounds that I just like. Every guitar tone just sounds great. Mr. Buckley is also famously a fantastic singer. The Whole thing is just super pleasing to the ears and it's great. 100/100
One of the greatest albums ever
One of the most enticing albums ever, and it feels like its in a genre all its own, far too cool to be singer-songwriter or rock.
Albums a 10, no notes
Obviously the famous "Hallelujah" cover, but from the first notes of Mojo Pin this is entirely my type of thing
Discazo.
An out of body experience, just perfect
fantastic
Have heard this probably hundreds of times but glad to get an excuse to sit with it again. I’m sure Hallelujah gets a lot of people’s focus but there’s tons to love on this. Last Goodbye is one of my all time fave songs, and this album is an easy five for me.
Was nice revisiting this one. Always found it a bit bloated and somewhat challenging to get through but really enjoyed a fresh listen after a few years. Ended up favoriting five tracks and discovered Eternal Life which never registered with me before. Shows a bit more of that rock range that would have been cool for him to explore. My brain tells me this is a 4* album but my heart is urging me to round up to a 5*. One of the ultimate "what ifs" in music... 4.25/5
Orgásmico, deprimente
This was really good! A hidden gem imo.
Are you kidding me? I'm so excited that I got this album. One of the only albums so far that I've listened to before (if not the only one) it's so good. I will listen to all of it before rating of course but I'm optimistic that this will be a high rating. His voice is so iconic and so haunting. It's rock, it's soulful, it defies genres at times. And it's his DEBUT. Like come ON. This debut is up there with Lorde lol. I just love this album and it is one that I think everyone should listen to. I know everyone has heard Hallelujah but like... the REST! The melodies, the drama but yet the simplicity of just instruments and his voice. The way this album makes me feel like I'm in a movie is unmatched. It's just so good. More of this please and thank you. Lover, You Should Come Over is probably a top 10 song for me. It's almost in two separate acts with the start of Eternal Life. Every song sounds so good together but also all of them are stunning stand alone songs. It's just powerful! love love love
Great songs and he was a super talented singer
I like this one a lot very good voice and overall very cool
Such a beautiful album, it’s been one of my favourites since the first time i heard it. Despite how much it ranges going from his hauntingly beautiful falsetto in Corpus Christi Carol to the aggressive guitar solo in Forget Her, it’s very cohesive and every song serves its purpose well. Each one is a masterpiece in its own right. My only regret for this album is that it’s his only studio release, rest in peace Jeff Buckley.
I never really realized how Zeppelin-ish this album is. Incredible voice, gone too soon. I'm really glad I revisited this one after a few years. Incredibly emotive and every song has a journey that you go on through it.
Melifluous! Such a tragedy he was taken too soon
Long time since I've listened to this in full. Mainstay of the late teenage years. Still a classic.
Five out of Five all day long. At times almost an exhausting listen packed full with emotion. How would the world of music look if Jeff was still with us today? Massive loss.
An album that I have carried everywhere. A single part of a whole life The single part of his single life Gone too soon
Jeff Buckley is one of the best singers I've ever heard. The album is beautiful. Favorite song: Last Goodbye
At first, Jeff Buckley appears to be the whinier American Tom Yorke. This isn't necessarily all bad, and I like the more Radiohead sounding songs the most. I enjoyed Grace quite a bit; it is much better than I expected it to be. Really nice vibes. Edit: I have returned to this album time and time again since I rated it. It's incredible! I'm glad "Lover, You Should've Come Over" is having a moment right now.
what a voice, what an atmosphere, love him and still cannot get over the fact and the heartbreak that this is his only album:(
Very very good all around, multiple standouts
A beautiful sound. Lover You Should've Come Over is a 6 out of 5 stars song.
Soooo dynamic
I wish he had more time to make more music. He died way too soon
Lovely
such a gorgeous album, and just seems more expansive than the previous day's Smiths' album, which I thought was also very pretty, but in a different way.
I knew this guy as hallelujah man and boy does he have range!
I listen to this about once a month. One of my all-time favorites.
Listened before?: Yes, a much beloved album for me
Absolutely loved it.
5 stars no doubt. Great voice great guitar playing
Peerless, one of the great albums, flawless.
The most hauntingly beautiful album. Every melody is sprinkled with a bittersweet sombre tough that makes me feel like I could bawl in seconds. I haven't listened to it since my teenage years and as an adult it still stands as one of the best I've ever heard. And it's obviously tainted by the tragedy of the artist which adds to it's peacefully ambivalent spectacle. I especially loved the contrast between Corpus Christi Carol and Eternal life. This guy has range. Love!
Biased and prejudiced but it's glorious.
Great album. One of my favourites. I think I would have preferred him to end on a bigger chord for the last note. Other than that it's all brilliant. You can hear how much he influenced 90/00s indie all the way through it.
Perfection v2
This album was not my usual cup of tea but that doesn't make it any less beautiful or captivating. Jeff's style and voice is somewhere between a rockstar and an angel, truly. He has an incredibly soulful approach to his songwriting. No doubt, absolutely graceful too so album is pretty aptly named. Jeff's got wild power in his voice too, with soaring choruses and refranes on Grace. The instrumentation is super organic and cozy, from organs to balanced drums and guiding basslines, very pretty strings as acoustic and electrifying leads. You have Hallelujah on here which is an incredibly transcendent song and the power of that song is pretty much unprecedented. Lover, You Should've Come Over is probably a new favorite of mine, another very powerful track. Eternal Life is also sick as hell and makes me wanna go skydiving or some shit. Dream Brother is mysterious as hell, ominous ass vibe but very awesome. All in all I can see why this album is so influential, there are times I could hear a future Thom Yorke sort of phrase or other vocal patterns that would bleed into alternative music. As a first time experience this album was pretty stunning and sonically compelling just off performances alone. RIP Jeff, damn shame he died so young because he was a hell of a musician.
10/10 I was wowed by this album. This album spoke to my past self in terms of my previous partners. The lyrics were touching and I empathized heavily with Buckley in songs such as Forget Her, Lover, You should have come over, and Last Goodbye. Every song was a great listen and completely rocked. The passion by Buckley was also unmatched. Both the delivery of the lines and the instrumentation were perfect. Will definitely be coming back to this album
Voice of a god damn angel! Love this man, love this album, nasty guitar work happening here too if you can tune out the heavenly vocals.
When I started this challenge I decided not to read anything about what albums are included or the criteria for inclusion. With that said, I have no qualms about this remarkable album being included in this list as I believe no life is complete without experiencing it at least once, but hopefully more often. Jeff Buckley has a uniquely beautiful voice and he puts it to good use in this set of songs. While "Hallelujah" seems to get all the attention, and it's outstanding, songs like "Lover, You Should've Come Over" display amazing talent and range. I just adore this album and am glad to see it included, it's certainly deserved. We can only imagine what else Jeff would have contributed to our world had we not lost him so tragically.
One of the all time great albums.
What would Jeff Buckley have become? Who else sounded like this at the time? What fingerprints could he have had on the landscape of American music? Frankly, I’d be a lot more interested to know this than if Kurt Cobain had been able to have a long career. A real genius gone way too soon here. Absolutely love this album.
Very good
What to say about this album? A pop genius gone before his time. And these songs are EPIC. Even the massively over-played "Hallelujah" sounds amazing in the context of the album (and he always had the best version). Also, I'd forgotten how much "Eternal Life" rocks.
Stupid better than I expected it to be album.
Interesting experience
One of the most beautiful voices to ever sing a song.
Love . Iconic. So good
4.5/5
PLAYED A SECRET CORD AND SUCKEDMEHALALUHUGHA
such a wide ranging and emotionally powerful album - absolutely loved it
Already listened to this album, lol. Jeff Buckley is a musical genius and his lyrics have stabbed me in the heart—as per usual. Grace and So Real will always remind me of Carlo. Curse you, Juu. Hope you’re okay. But So Real now more reminds me of Heyzel, my soul and heart at once.
Great album
wow beautiful final rating 9/10
First Listen: 27 Mar 2023 his voice is unhuman bro is an angel im so deadass. RIP
Emotionally charged, achingly beautiful album that more than lives up to its towering reputation. Favourite Songs: Grace, So Real, Hallelujah, Lover, You Should've Come Over, Dream Brother. Least Favourite Songs: Corpus Christi Carol.
yeah no this is going in the rotation
I think what really sells it for me is that some of the songs are amazing, and none of them feel “just okay”. I don’t listen to a lot of this kind of music though, so it may be more of a novelty for me. But I saved a ton of songs from this album!
Brilliant! Listened to it twice on repeat. So far, the best album I’ve discovered thanks to this project. Dramatic, occasionally overblown, raw and sentimental at the same time. Standout tracks: Lover, You Should’ve Come Over; Dream Brother.
This is an absolute masterpiece. His voice, the raw emotion and talent and passion behind what he’s singing, the messaging, the yearning… it doesn’t get better than this. We lost him way too soon
Damn epic. Just when you think there's gonna be a completely quiet song it explodes again to new heights. The man has range and sings with conviction. The production is just enough so it doesn't get in the way of the music. I never listened to Buckley before but I agree with the writers of the list, you should have experienced this at some point in life.
oh, the 90s angst! the guitar rifts and vocal range! the songwriting is fantastic. his cover of hallelujah is heartbreaking.
I was a Rolling Stone subscriber as a teenager and I remember this album getting great reviews. Despite this I didn't listen for many years because I incorrectly believed he was some kind of Harry Connick Jr crooner type. I was right about Buckley being a crooner but I was wrong to go 31 years without listening to this album. "Hallelujah" and "Lover, you should come over" are my favorites but there are no bad tracks on the album. The incredible part for me is that he sings in "his" voice on every song. Buckley doesn't adopt any "grungy" howl on the more up tempo songs nor does he have an affect on the ballads. I am sad 28 years after the fact that he died because we didn't get to see where he would go from this debut. 4.75/5
Fucking phenomenal honestly. Not my speed and still captivated me. Took a few songs but I really did buy in. Forget Her is a perfect ending.
i've listened to this many times before Mojo Pin - 5/5 Grace - 5/5 Last Goodbye - 4/5 Lilac Wine - 5/5 (i still prefer Nina Simone's cover tho) So Real - 5/5 Hallelujah - 5/5 Lover, You Should've Come Over - 5/5 Corpus Christi Carol - 4/5 (idk why i didn't like this my 1st listen but this is fucking heavenly) Eternal Life - 4/5 Dream Brother - 4/5 Forget Her - 5/5 Average score: 4.6/5 (rounding up) fuckin' gorgeous album from start to finish. Jeff Buckley was a talented singer-songwriter (much like his dad), and it's a damn shame he passed away so young (also much like his dad) now i'm realizing the majority of my fav artists in the singer-songwriter category have died ridiculously young... :( i've yet to hear the original version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, and i'd only ever heard the performance by Rufus Wainwright prior to hearing this version via Shrek. Jeff blew Rufus's performance out of the fuckin' water, hands down it's sad this is the only album he made before his untimely passing, but it truly is fantastic
This was great. Every song was different from the last and they were all such a rich, deep well of musicality and emotion and sounds. I listened to it twice. Five stars.
excellent
needs no other introduction, 5/5, no notes
I quite literally screamed when I refreshed my page and this album popped up. This is easily a top 5 album of all time for me. There are certain songs that you'll always remember exactly where you were and how you felt when you heard them for the first time. That for me was Lover, You Should've Come Over. And to reinvent a song for a whole new generation to a point where your version is more famous than the original? Buckley truly was a genius. This is a no-skips album in my opinion and I still listen through it at least once a month. It's just magic. Both lyrically and melodically, Buckley had this innate ability to be so inventive, and this album is also further proof how skilled he was as a guitarist. I can only imagine the kind of career he would have had if he were still alive.
yesterday: i'm depressed because of some political issues today. please don't give me any leonard cohen albums tomorrow or i'll be more depressed. now: this is 1/10 leonard cohen. i am depressed. but Jeff can carry every fucking song and give me an mental orgasm at the same time. 5/5.
Amazing album
