Beautiful classic.

Probably closer to 4.5, but it's a one-of-a-kind creative work showcasing Jeff's skills and charm with voice and guitar

How can an artist possibly be this fully formed at their debut? I've know Hallelujah since I was young, but I had never listened to Grace in its entirety. This album is a work of true genius. The beauty of this album is truly indescribable and listening to is has moved me to my core.

IN LOVE

5, no question at all about it. But one album of this is enough. And I’m sure as a lover he would’ve been a pain in the backside to have around. All mood and swoon and hangdog looks. No thanks.

One of my favorite albums, his voice is a dream. His only album. Deep, moody, rich. Very 90s. Stunning songs.

RIP Jeff, avresti amato Chaturbate

So coming into this album, I had heard Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" as it's a beautiful rendition of the song and I had heard it a handful of times, however I never really listened to the other songs on the album. I feel like the album cover is super misleading as if you would've asked me what genre this album probably fell into...I would've clocked it as 80's rock like Billy Idol or something...I could not have been more wrong. What followed as I listened to the album was one of the most beautifully composed albums I've heard in a very, very long time. The album is like a prog rock or rock opera filled with soaring vocals, dark melodies, and some of the prettiest sounding clean channel guitar work I've ever heard. I think the saddest part of this album is that we were robbed of more Jeff Buckley as I learned he unfortunately passed away 3 years after this album was made - in 1997. I can hear his sound in SO many bands I love to this day - Muse, Radiohead, The Mars Volta...the list goes on. I've enjoyed a great many of the albums this website has shown me but of all of them, so far, this has been my favorite. I think I will be returning to this one many, many times over the coming years. RIP Jeff Buckley, I would've loved to have seen what you could've created if you were not gone long before your time. Standout tracks are: "Grace", "So Real", "Lover You Should've Come Over" and "Eternal Life".

Incredible vocals

um dos melhores discos do mundo

Geweldig album! Prachtige stem, prachtige gitaren. Breekbaar, af en toe hard, maar altijd even prachtig. 5.0

Wow. Simply incredible. Jeff's voice is simply incredible and his range is truly magical. Hallelujah is the obvious highlight here but I actually think Eternal Life is a more powerful and engaging song. Easy 5 stars

So good! I love 'Lover, You Should've Come Over' best of all, but there is not one bad song. Just noticed that 'Eternal Life' kind of reminds me of Radiohead

It was my 7th favorite album of the 90s and that is saying something....gone to soon Jeff. Rest in peace brother.

This is a masterpiece. Jeff Buckley was so talented. I love every song on this album.

Depression/10

Jeg ble så glad da jeg så dette albumet på pc-skjermen. Elsker Jeff Buckley!!! Hadde hørt 7/11 sanger fra før av, så var et par nye.

9/10. Legendary. One of the greatest one-album wonders of all time.

iiiiitts never ooVVERRrr, a kinGDOm fOr a kiss UpOn hERRR SHHoOoUULLDERR

Super Dope

He had a sweet and precious voice, and his interpretations were fantastic. A unique artist who is sorely missed today. The version of Hallelujah on this album is, for me (and for many others), the best version of Leonard Cohen's classic. There are no mistakes here. 5 stars.

Dynamic vocals with haunting glows, production compliments the melancholic vibe with its diverse guitar sounds and moody percussion.

Perfection. Beautiful songs and instrumentals, but the real highlights are the covers of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ and, especially, Benjamin Britton’s ‘Corpus Christi Carol’. The latter ranks as one of my favourite songs and song versions of all time.

Brilliant. Lilac wine is so much better than Elkie Brooke’s version even though I love her’s.

An undeniable classic 5*

I was already listening to it as it came up lol. Amazing.

Wonderful. What a talent we lost when Jeff passed away. Most famous for Hallelujah of course, but the rest of the album is heartfelt, evocative, ethereal, atmospheric, and just plain beautiful. Worth several listens, because this is one of those albums that gives back a little more with each repeated playback.

I've loved this album since it came out. It's still one of my all time favourites. This is one of those word of mouth albums. As a teen I bought the album after hearing a couple of tracks on the Triple J radio station. My mum fell in love with it and bought a copy. Then my uncle, grandmother, cousin, friends. Before you know it everyone you know owns it. Age, sex, etc was no boundary to the spread of this masterpiece.

Wonderful. Great voice.

Can say I enjoyed every song on this album, think it suits my desire to hear soulful, raw and hauntingly heartbroken music. Love how the guitar, drums and voice all complement each other to create an hour of sombre sound.

Incredible album. Have had a few songs on immediate repeat rotation.

This is something else. Wonderful.

He really put his whole Bucklussy into this album.

i already knew a couple songs but holy shit

Took me back to my uni days. Incredible record.

A really good album, he had such a vibe, I guess it should have been a really good album to listen while kissing or more a girl or a boy. Obviously "Allelujah" is an absolute banger, one of the best interpretation ever as Jeff isn't the creator of this song. I also really looove "Lover, You Should've Come Over" the lyrics are so damn good and the chords and everything. I also loved "Dream Brother" really touching song, the guitar riff adds something soo special and spiritual to the song and Jeff has such an insane voice. I usually don't like long songs but these ones are insaaaaane, damn that sucks that Jeff died so young because he could have made some more bangers that's for sure, rest in peace man and congrats for your insane work.

I recently was introduced to this album before and thought it was amazing. His song writing, vocals and music are great, this is an immediate 5 star album and I'm glad to revisit listening to this today.

This is an extraordinary album. I've never encountered another album that sounds anything like this. Jeff Buckley has such control over his voice that even when it sounds like he's going to completely lose control of it and it'll turn into a some sort of off-pitch screech, he sticks the landing perfectly. Everyone knows his cover of a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." That isn't even close to being the best song on the album. I'd probably put "So Real" or "Eternal Life" at the top of the heap. But then there's the really risky performance of Benjamin Britten's "Corpus Christi Carol." 5 stars. I would give more if I could.

Easy five. A beloved childhood favorite.

пять бэнгеров на этом альбоме (каждый из которых поднял бы до 4), о чём тут говорить. подарила Диме Колдуну микстейп с Джеффом с комментарием из гарден стейта

Excellent ! A bunch of emotions and talent, in a smouth dreamy ambiance.

Incredible. Jeff had a unique sound, wild and unpredictable and compelling. I’d never listened to Grace all the way through before, but I will listen again. He met his father only once, and the two sound very different, but both made music that was one-of-a-kind.

A very emotional album that has only become more potent as time progresses. Rest in peace Jeff Buckley. Mid 9

This is so beautiful. One of my favourites

Breathtaking, the more I hear about Jeff the more I wish he didn't take that swim on the Mississippi river. His angelic voice is what most people notice, but the guitar playing on this album is top notch, amazing songwriting. To imagine that Jeff didnt liked his voice at first and only wanted to be known as a guitar player... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYmIlkCgIvU

Its Jeff.... one of the best when it comes to song composition. If you aren't studying/analyzing his songs, you most definitely should be. And his voice is just insane. No decimals taken off for this one.. Probably as close as youre going to get to perfection as far as an albums concerned. The sound, flow, composition, and overall vision are off the charts. 5 out of 5

Grace by Jeff Buckley is an absolute stunner from start to finish. I’m blown away by the sheer brilliance packed into every track. Buckley’s vocals are nothing short of wonderful, they stir up all sorts of emotions and make you feel every word like it’s your own. The guitar work is fabulous; each riff and delicate lick is played with such passion and precision, it really sets the tone for the whole record. Of course, if I’ve got a minor gripe, it’s that there aren’t many flaws to call out here. A couple of moments feel a tad over-reverent, like the production sometimes gets so lush you might miss the subtle shifts in mood. But honestly, that’s more of a quirk than a real downside, it hardly detracts from the overall magic of the album. It’s an absolute shame, really, that Jeff Buckley tragically died after that infamous river accident and left us with only this one masterpiece. Grace is a poignant reminder of what could have been a long and even more illustrious career. In my book, it’s a timeless classic, a record that continues to inspire and move me every single time I put it on. A solid 4.9/5 stars. pure unadulterated genius that I’ll always be grateful for.

It was another of those ones where as soon as I put it on, I knew it was gonna be good. Incredible stuff all throughout. Loved the chordal structures and Jeff's insanely sweet tenor. RIP.

Yes, his voice soars in totally unsubtle ways at times, but this is a monumental album that deserves its accolades.

gone too soon

4.5 stars. So good. Takes alt-rock on a haunting ride with fantastic songwriting. Beautiful tenor voice, varied guitar playing with different tunings and styles. It's avant garde enough to be interesting without losing the listener. Standouts are cover of "Hallelujah" and "Last Goodbye" but there are no weak tracks.

It's one of the greatest albums for me personally. Some of this is due, not to the album, as much as the stories around it. I am aware that critically that shouldn't have an impact. However, the fact that such an album would come out of the progeny of Tim Buckley and that he would tragically die a few short years later helps to contextualize it. Jeff did his own thing. Jeff had every right to the fame his solo project was gathering. We will never know if we would hear this music without his father. We'll never know if we would have heard more had he not simply walked into the Mississippi river. These facts cannot help but be factored and so I cannot help but allow them into my critical analysis of this album in its place in history. His voice is damn near alien and his lyrics, while heavy-handed, are absolutely beautiful. What a shame and what a gift.

Knowing only Hallelujah, I was pleasantly surprised by how dynamic and energetic the rest of the album is. The title track literally had me hooting and hollering In My car.

A whole album of anthems to love. Unpredictable, varied, and vibrating. The stalwart Hallelujah clinches the 5.

Delightful

This guy is Tim’s son? For some reason I have never listened to this one. I sorely regret that now. This is absolutely fantastic. The kind of music that can strongly affect me and make me feel. It feels very 90’s yet at the same time has shades of the 60’s singer-songwriter.

was like WAIT HOW DO I HAVE THIS WHOLE ALBUM SAVED its bc 1 of u recommended it to me + i added it 2 a playlist of albums to listen to + then promptly didnt listen to it oops. ohhhh lovely intro to mojo pin....warm n ghosty.....this body will never be safe from harm okay going to punch me in the face i see. FUCK. turned to my friend genius dot com bc i was curious what it was abt him hating the guy who shot mlk + the nazis. fuck yeah dude o7 "man youve made a killer of your unborn son" goes hard as a line. WHAT IS LOVE...WHERE IS HAPPINESS...WHAT IS LIFE....WHERE IS PEACE? WHEN WILL I FIND THE STRENGTH TO BRING ME RELEEAAAAAEASE? TELL ME WHERE IS THE LOVE IN WHAT YOUR PROPHET HAS SAID? MAN IT SOUNDS 2 ME JUST LIKE A PRISON 4 THE WALKING DEAD <-- id say im always saying this at family thanksgiving but ive uninvited myself for the rest of time + changed my last name legally. but like in spirit i would hope they can hear me there being pissed off at them. mm and then dream brother is very classic kinda psychadelic trippy vague fantasy themes dream stuff. not really my thing but okay enough. forget her sounds nice n moody to start tho....nmmmmn like what is the way to find more guitars like this. the world before her was sober w/no place to go......yeah thats a good one. GROWLYYYY GUITAARRR man i wish i knew how to write for guitar. i have never known how 2 write for polyphonic instruments + it was kind of my downfall as a composer + also the aphantasia kind of + also the lack of practicing. but nkt knowjng how to write for keyboard or guitar really. god this guy is good is that like. organ??? haha unless???? okay the musicians whosoever they may be also rocked out this album. david that was so delightful. this is 5 stars. ik im like "would i buy a vinyl" ad my review bit but if i wasnt kinda =( abt the petrochemical consumption of vinyls i would buy a vinyl player just so i could get grace by jeff buckley. standout tracks: mojo pin, last goodbye, lilac wine, so real, eternal life. if i could name a fault for this its that this is still straight guy music but like. fine hes allowed

This is a rare, very easy 5 star record for me. I first dug into this record about 15 years ago because I was intrigued by the timeless cover of Hallelujah. What happened was that I realized that it was not even the highlight of the record, but rather a compliment to the overall sound and feel. Jeff’s voice is unlike anything else I have ever heard. He could sing reading from a phone book and it would pierce right through me. The vulnerability with that much strength at the same time? God damn, man. The guitar tones throughout the record also have a phenomenal sound that perfectly compliments everything else happening. The whole record is really beautiful and dark. It will lift you up and haunt you just the same. A fucking perfect album start to finish, highlighted by some of my favorite tracks: Grace and Eternal Life

nothing I could say here can match the love I have for this album. Every time I hear this it makes me feel good, sad, beautiful feelings. 5/5.

Been meaning to listen to this for ages, I've already heard a couple of songs and love them so expecting good things Update: This is genuinely now a favourite album, holy shit

ogni volta che ascolto "so real" mi innamoro sempre di più disco nella mia bucket list cmq

Personal favourite, greatest album of all time 10/10. Jeff Buckley was a talented individual with an immense ear for music. You can hear the emotion in his voice, an album that is timeless and still popular today. 10/10.

This is like my 5th time listening to this album in full... and I swear with every listen this album gets better. Just his voice alone is just powerful enough to give it a perfect rating, and to think it's just... this... from him. man. the world didn't deserve jeff buckley. fav song: grace

Pre-listening thoughts: oh we are soooo back. I am so excited to listen to this album in full. I’ve heard maybe 3-4 songs from this already so I’ve got a good sense of what I’m getting into. Also crazy we got this before any of Tim’s stuff. Glad it happened this way. Post/during listening thoughts: god Jeff Buckley’s voice is unreal. It’s rare that someone’s performance can carry so much emotion while sounding so effortless. The lyricism is devastatingly beautiful. The instrumentation complements everything perfectly. Even in the covers he sprinkles magic. This version of Hallelujah is still the only one I will really listen to. This is a phenomenal album. Gone too soon. 10/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: yeah Fav tracks: all of them. Last Goodbye is my absolute fav but this is just about as perfect as music gets Least fav tracks: n/a

Lovely

Emotional

This album is on my all-time greatest list. I can listen to every song without needing to play it. Best ever versions of Lilac Wine and Hallelujah, plus his own tracks are brilliant too.

Remek djelo remek djelo remek djelo remek djelo

Deeply soulful, a surprising standout.

A lot more rock than I was expecting but I loved it. I liked the more uptempo songs more than the more famous slow ballads but those were pleasant too. Rating: 4.8

I loved the song Grace already but the rest of the album is just as phenomenal

Un alma peediday, una voz prodigiosa, un talento incalculable

que discazo. cornudisima mal

Loved it! His vocal range is ridiculous and Hallelujah makes me cry.

Lilac Wine, Hallelujah, Last Goodbye, Lover You Should’ve Come Over are absolutely beautiful. The rest are still a great listen as they do have their own specific vibes.

This one is an easy 5 for me. I loved this album since the first time I heard it and already own it in FLAC and vinyl form.

Man, it's a goddamn shame he only ever got to make one record because this is gooooorgeous.

One of the greatest albums ever recorded. What a loss. There isn’t another album with the tension and release of tension that this album has.

Emotional. Breakup album

Jeff Buckley, tortured pretty boy bohemian, the music industry wanted to brand him a nepo-baby decades before the concept entered the cultural consciousness. Buckley never knew his father, 1960s folk troubadour, Tim Buckley, and resented having his music connected to the man who abandoned his mother. Being seen as a scruffy, grunge era heart throb affecting an Elvis Presley pose on the cover of his debut album Grace, may have inspired some casual listeners to deprive themselves of his powerful music. Unfortunately, his drowning in the Mississippi, while recording a follow up album in 1997, meant that his limited studio output his been accorded a tragic mythology and left fans wondering what might have been. His voice is mystical and transcendently passionate, Buckley considered Sufi devotional singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to be his Elvis Presley, and the influence of such global classical, multi-octave singing is evident on "Grace" and "Last Goodbye" whose string sections sound a little like Bollywood instrumentals. But, the guitar playing is also electrifying and the band is beautifully cohesive. Jazz standard "Lilac Wine" starts as a delicate vocal and electric guitar strumming before the brushed snare drums and cymbals come in and build to retreat, leaving Buckley's voice unaccompanied, fragile, tender and stunning. "So Real" comes in waves, earthly and ethereal, building to a guitar feedback battle that ends in a seductively whispered "I love you, but I'm afraid to love you." His acoustic Leonard Cohen cover, which inspired the Canadian songwriter to perform it in a similar style (like how Jimi Hendrix's cover inspired Bob Dylan to perform his "All Along the Watchtower" differently), is probably the most ubiquitous of the songs from Grace (it was also similarly covered by Rufus Wainwright and associated with the soundtrack to Shrek, before it inexplicably became a widely covered "Christmas song" (proving that Christians are quite literal in their assumptions about faith and incapable of interpreting texts (like poetry or the Bible)). "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" is iconic and the lyrics are incredible. Though I have been listening to this album for years the front half tends to stick in my mind a lot more than all of the songs following "Corpus Christi Carol" but "Eternal Life" rocks and "Dream Brother" has mystical, swirling, Middle Eastern guitar melodies and powerful vocals. "Forget Her" is a bluesy closing number that I, ironically, forget. It is such an incredible song, although a fadeout ending is kind of a slap in the face to both artist and the audience, especially since Buckley and the band sounded like they were in a groove and the singer was beginning to vocalize as the song fades to silence.

Oh! BITCH! I dont even *need* to listen to this. This is one of my favorite albums ever. I fucking love Jeff Buckley and have loved him and this album since I was a kid.

This album is definitely something you should listen to before you pass. Truly beautiful and unique. 90s aesthetics but still sounds completely contemporary. You can't beat Buckley's voice and performance.

As a debut album it's impressive. No doubt the legend has helped its critical standing - but listening with critical distance I think it's a great album, full of atmosphere, emotion, great harmonies and Radiohead-influencing melodies. Self-indulgent here and there but hey, who doesn't like to indulge. I know I do.

terrific

obviously all of jeff buckley’s music is tinged with tragedy regardless of what it sounds like, but i think the emotional depth of this album is staggering anyway. his soaring voice, his lyrics, his guitar, the oscillation between extremes in terms of volume and sound and emotion…it’s all transcendent. ironically the one song on the album that doesn’t necessarily floor me the way the others do is the title track. fav tracks: lover you should’ve come over; mojo pin; so real; last goodbye; eternal life

Loved it

This is a perfect and essential record in my life and I would gladly give it 50 stars if I could.

I adore this album and always have.

имба. один из любимых альбомов и исполнителей. мой топ песен (не рейтинг): Grace, Last Goodbye, So Real, Eternal Life. ну а вообще, это один из редких альбомов, в котором нравятся все песни (кроме алелуя)...

There are just some artists that stand so solidly on their work that I HAVE to give them a second listen, and Jeff Buckley was no exception. Something about this album felt so cohesive and raw. The instrumentals felt on point, and that vocal work was out of this world! Plenty of standout tracks here, but I'm going with 'Forget Her' as my fave of the bunch. If I had a nickle for every time I've listened to an album (twice I might add!) just to find out the artist left the world too soon, I'd have two too many. (The other being Nick Drake.) I do think part of their legacy may not have happened without such tragic catalysts advancing it further, but it's heartbreaking to consider how young they were and how much they could give to the world had they not been taken from it so soon.

Yeah, the man is good.

beauty

I'm giving this a 5 for nostalgia / my personal cut of the album that ends with "Lover, You Should've Come Over" being repeated 4 times. I had a burned cd of this that was later transferred to an iPod and I still have the old skips from that cd etched into my audio memory - a classic.

a legendary album by a legendary artist

timeless music, rich in variety, fun to listen to!

Sandwiching a one star with two five stars I see! Gorgeous, I love this album. Hallelujah makes me want to cry every time

album so good it’s haunting me and the hoes

Really thought it would be more sad, but I’m sure it might be if I personally could tell what people are saying better. (Update: googled it and the words are in fact largely sad) Hear me out: R patz circa never think doing some kind of collab Tbh I like all the Auauauoo EAAAAaaa No idea what playlists of mine these songs belong on but they’re going on some playlists. Off the bat I was thinking “wow, solid 4, fantastic (great music but doesn’t make me go crazy go stupid like a 5). But then Last Goodbye made me go crazy go stupid and boom this album is a 5! And my opinion remained the same listening to the rest of the album. I need a Jeff Buckley T shirt. Buckley girl winter.

One of my favorite albums (Understand why people might feel differently). I've listened to this so much, but still end up hearing something different that catches my attention. ETERNAL LIFE probably a top 10 song for me.

Impressive the fussion of Plant, Bono, Gavin Rossedale, as the pokemon evolution before Chris Martin. Great album very unpredictable, kind of borong at first but the last half is amazing. Versatile and a envidiable vocal range. The song eternal life is a must here for every rock fan and should be in everyones playlist

I lobve this! Some of the songs are covers I think, but no doubt with his own spin onto it. I can see how The bends was partially inspired by some of this, as songs like So Real and Lover, you should have come over remind me of fake plastic trees etc. Theres probably no downsides at all, minus maybe that I don't like the halleluiah song too much (its still quite good though). Favorite songs: Lilac Wine, So Real, Lover, you should have come over and the one after that. wow this is such an indie NPC take but.. Overall around 9/10

One of the greats. So many feelings! A voice that rises and falls like my heart strings.

Oh, God, what a voice... It's hard to find such soulful and powerful music from artists this young. I was truly in awe of the sheer beauty of half of these songs, such as 'Mojo Pin', 'Last Goodbye', and 'Lover, You Should've Come Over'. Of course, the defining act of this album is his rendition of 'Hallelujah', which could easily bring a tear to anyone's eyes. It's a shame we lost him so young.

This is fucking magnificent. What a voice Jeff Buckley has, and he can seemingly do any type of song he wants and anything he covers becomes his. Just wow all over the board. Not a single bad moment on this entire record. One of my favs

Perfect

Beautiful, beautiful album. Songwriting is outstanding and his guitar playing and voice are almost transcendent. ‘Lover you should have come over’ takes me right back to being a 20 something year old guy trying to figure things out. An album that I will always revisit.

I can't get over how much I enjoyed this album. Had never heard of it or Jeff before now. That rendition of Hallelujah was beautiful and haunting (and I am not a religious person). Probably the best version I've ever heard. Something about the musical arrangements and the sound of his voice just do it for me. I am so sad he doesn't have more of a catalogue to look up but I will definitely be coming back to this.

Superb, delicious, nostalgic, it's angsty but in the best way. Buckley's voice, my god, velvet soft on one track, raw, angry and tremoring the next - amazing emotional range in this album.

one of the best albums ever fr fr

I have heard many people talk about this album, but I have never gotten around to it until now. I am so mad that I didn’t listen to it sooner because it is right up my alley. I love it

Somehow never listened to the album before, despite obsessively listening to Hallelujah I the past (this and multiple other versions). Pretty good isn't it?

Probably been 17 years since I listened to this whole album through. I forgot how good it was.

Apart from maybe 2 tracks it is a no skip listen. Incredible record that is full of emotion, composed brilliantly musically and lyrically. You can understand why it is so highly rated

My guy could fuckin sing Also some really inventive guitar playing All the instruments just sound so perfect on this Can only imagine how good a follow up album could have been RIP

immaculate album - production, tone, lyricism, genre-spanning wow

Et fedt album! Det er varieret, det går lige fra Halleluja, til Eternal life. - Klart et album jeg kan høre igen og igen. Eternal life = Grunge.

One of a kind voice for sure. The songwriting is really quite detailed/intricate as well. Definitely a one of a kind singer songwriter/rocker record that I really enjoy the more I listen to. Love the whole thing. Angelic.

After multiple listens to this album my thoughts stray from "this is some well-performed crybaby bullshit" and "this is some well-performed crybaby gold". Buckley's vocals are next-level but it feels in every song that he must demonstrate his full vocal range and go over the top, which can become a bit tiresome on repeat listens (if you're a sicko who doesn't take breaks between repeat listens). Buckley isn't just a great singer but he knows how to write lyrics and instrumentation that works perfectly well with his voice. Having said that, it does feel cathartic to just having this soulful white boy just belt out in every single track and give it his all. Very few songs here are a miss and the variety in musical style here makes this an interesting listen. The songs on here work super well to put into a "i am going to feel upset on purpose" playlist and together as an album. I was going to give this a 4, but then I realised I had listened to this about eight times in the day that it was assigned to me. That and Jeff Buckley died the same time I was born so I really only have one option. Highlights: Grace, Last Goodbye, So Real, Hallelujah, Lover, You Should Have Come Over, Dream Brother

Come on you already know what this is getting 🥲😢😢😢🥵🥵😈 Inject it into my veins baby

The soulful and interesting singing was the standout here by far. Somgs which could have been dull but for his VOICE!! The musical choices and contrast were really daring and artful. I was especially surprised by the heaviness of Eternal Life after the christmas carol one. Definitely worth my time

The best

Didn’t listen all the way through (this time) but this album deserves its legendary reputation. Absolutely killer stuff

sure, why not weep on my walk to work

Jeff Buckley once described himself as "the warped lovechild of Nina Simone and all four members of Led Zeppelin." This self-description is apt, especially if we add Chet Baker to the mix. "Grace" is a remarkable journey in terms of musical genres, and vocal registers. When considering this album nowadays, it is a delightful surprise to see how well it has aged, in my opinion. As a big fan of Simone and Led Zeppelin "Grace" clearly hits the mark. Although some tracks are, by no means, perfect, the overall impression is satisfying. Beyond Buckley's famous rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Halleluiah", there are many notable songs. My personal favorite is "Lilac Wine", where Buckley completes the empty spaces of Nina Simone's harmonic version while also emphasizing the emotional power of his intimate and flexible range.

This is really great, surprisingly proggy but with loads of beautiful bits too.

Damn, he used his voice well. I've loved the title track since I first heard it about 5 years ago. I got some new favourites in Dream Brother, Mojo Pin, Last Goodbye and Lover, You Should've Come Over. Damn, that's half the album. I love the moody atmosphere, the guitars and those organs.

A melancholically romantic and beautiful album. The soulfulness and originality of the instrumentals perfectly convey the lyrics. The standout tracks for me are those in the middle: "So Real," "Hallelujah," and "Lover, You Should Have Come Over." Buckley's untimely loss is a profound one for the music world. He was an exceptionally talented musician

I don’t really listen to the album much because it’s just got such a soul piercing quality to it that makes me struggle to listen to it in full without just breaking down in tears. But saying that… so real, lover you should come over, hallelujah and forget her on the same album just makes a masterpiece 5/5

Probably my favourite album of all time. A masterpiece of a unique artist that left us too soon.

AWESOME!!! INCREDIBLE!!!

Such a great album. Interesting that it didn't do well when it was first released. It's probably best known for Buckey's version of Hallelujah, but there are so many good songs. I spotify-liked nearly all of them.

Having really one known the Buckley version of Hallelujah, I found it so interesting that Grace and Last Goodbye are actually pretty rockin'. What a sad story his life and death are... worth a read for anyone unfamiliar.

It always deeply saddens me that this was the only studio release he ever got to release. Jeff was so ridiculously talented and this album is perfect prove of this. This man could turn any cover this own and this album is so breathtakingly beautiful all throughout.

Oh boy… This album is an absolute enigma. But it is sooooooooo good. I remember the first time I heard it I absolutely hated it. Falsetto. A hymn. Is it rock? Metal? Folk? Wtf? After years I listened again and I liked it but I still couldn’t say why. It just felt familiar. I listened front to back about 5 times yesterday and all I can say is it is honest, heartfelt, real. This is exactly what Jeff wanted- it is one of the most self representative albums I’ve ever heard. It is immaculate in that way. Yeah, some jf the songs are just okay. Some of old have probably evolved had he continued to make music. (If you don’t know the story of Jeff Buckley look it up- the dude died swimming in a lake, on tour, totally sober… he just drowned). One of the other things that struck me this time is that I can hear both his influence on the music world and theirs on him. One of his closest friends was in a band and at least one of these songs sounds like it should have been on their album Louder Than Love. I remember Chris Cornell saying how much Jeff influenced him. Thom Yorke from Radiohead said that he began singing falsetto after listening to this record because it convinced him that it would be okay. Ultimately this is all we have if him and I wish there were more. I’d give it a 9/10 but what the hell…

One of the most beautiful albums ever made. Buckley showcases his amazing voice on every damn song with such incredible passion. And that cover of Hallelujah is one of the greatest songs to ever grace my ears (Pun DEFINITELY intended). Jeff Buckley was taken from us too soon, I would love to have seen what he would have gone on to make after this.

I'm sure I'll be the only person to give this a positive review but I remember listening to this as an angsty teenager, and I can remember a time before Hallelujah was an overplayed joke song. I can't not give it 5 stars. I'm sorry.

I was ready to hate this and did a very quick heel turn. Singer songwriter definitely has some negative scores in our little group but wow, what a good listen. The Chris Cornellness about him is great. The sad stuff lands. Hallelujah is pretty good, maybe not as iconic as John Cale's version. Jeff Buckley died swimming in a river and getting hit by a tugboat while not on narcotics.

one of my favourite albums ever, truly beautiful, so emotional, rest in peace jeff buckley

Simply beautiful

Really good

i listened to this album a few years ago on a whim and was blown away. i love hallelujah and it’s probably the worst song on here fave song: so real

Okay. So yea. This is by far the best cover of Hallelujah in the history of our world. And will always be the best cover. It’s absolutely amazing. Was super excited to listen to the rest of this album, especially after I realized that Hallelujah was on this album. And the album did not disappoint. This was great. Some really touching and personal lyrics. The guitar is phenomenal. It’s a perfect length. His voice is fucking amazing. The highs and the lows, the changes of the pitch, the volume changes. The range that he shows on the guitar styles and the range of his voice is one of a kind. Wow. Whatever you do, don’t look up how he died. I got very sad :(. Another amazing artist who died way too young. There are many songs on this album I saved. I’ll be returning to listen to the full album many times in the future. This is why we are doing this journey!! To experience amazing and historical music we didn’t know existed!!

Loved this

Beautiful tragedy. Jeff Buckley was an incredible musician, writer, and singer. Grace is one of the best albums to come out of the 90’s. It’s a shame we won’t be hearing any of his new creations, aside from posthumous releases.

Conocía algunas canciones, pero las que más me gustaron fueron las que no conocía. Un sonido agradable con un toque experimental.

why is my face wet:(

When I listen to this album I think of one word: beauty. This is a beautiful album - that voice, the production, the compositions. His guitar playing is often understated, yet surprisingly complex I feel like the world missed out on Buckley's future output due to his premature death. At least we have Grace. Liked Songs Added: Last Goodbye Hallelujah Eternal Life

Difficult to believe this had mixed reviews on release. Outstanding

So fire this is what a soulful white boy sounds like

Amazing voice , so much emotion behind his music

This is another album on this list that I’ve heard a few times before that hadn’t grabbed me as hard as its reputation says it should. It’s again one of those albums on this list with that scenario that I’ve now developed a new appreciation and love for. It’s a singular, beautiful, and tragic masterpiece. Singular because I can’t think of another album quite like it. Beautiful because Jeff had the voice of an actual angel. Tragic because it’s the only one we got from him. It’s incredible for many reasons, not the least of which is that it resurrected what many consider the greatest song ever written, Hallelujah. Buckley’s version is arguably the best (I vote for John Cale personally by the slimmest margin but Buckley’s is at worst also perfect), and certainly expanded the public consciousness of the song. Every song is amazing. It’s highlights for me include Mojo Pin, So Real, Hallelujah, and Lover You Should Have Come Over. The arrangements are great, the fingerpicked guitars are fantastic, and the band and album mix correctly support the star of the show: Buckley’s vocals. An amazing album that I hope continues to grow on me with every return.

corpus christi carol is a wild choice to cover lmao

Lover, You Should've Come Over es otra maravilla. Otros discos de una de las mejores cosechas que ha dado la música, 1994: BLUR: Parklife, PORTISHEAD: Dummy, MANO NEGRA: Casa Babylon, SUEDE: Dog Man Star, NAS: Illmatic, OASIS: Definitely Maybe, NEIL YOUNG: Sleeps With Angels, AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB: San Francisco, R.E.M.: Monster, HOLE: Live Through This, PAVEMENT: Crooked rain, Crooked rain, MASSIVE ATTACK: Protection, THE AUTERS: Now I’m A Cowboy, NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS: Let Love In, JOHNNY CASH: American Recordings, SEBADOH: Bakesale, UNDERWORLD: Dubnobasswithmyheadman, STONE ROSES: Second Coming, BECK: Mellow Gold, MARK LANEGAN: Whiskey For The Holy Ghost, TOM PETTY: Wildflowers, THE BEASTIE BOYS: Ill Comunication, KRISTIN HERSH: Hips And Makers, SABRES OF PARADISE: Haunted Dancehall, JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION: Orange, NIRVANA: Unplugged In New York, ALI FARKA TOURE & RY COODER: Talking Timbuktu, PULP: His’n’Hers, THE PRODIGY: Music For The Gilted Generation, VERUCA SALT: American Thighs, THE WALKABOUTS: Satisfied Ma, MANIC STREET PREACHERS: The Holy bible, Elvis Costello: Brutal Youth, The Offspring- Smash,

One of my favourites, so I'll only be making notes with one eye open. What a great debut. I imagine he would've gotten better and better, with more life experience and a little more maturity, but so often it's the imperfect, untempered, passionate and flawed music that attracts. Once it becomes fine-tuned and over produced, it loses some essence of what made it good. I guess we'll never know, with only another half-finished album to judge. Anyway, good range of tunes. Not all great but mostly at least good, with some absolute gold. Probably didn't need Corpus Christi Carol. Favourite tracks Grace; Last Goodbye; Lover, You Should've Come Over. I'm giving Jeff five stars.

JEFFREYYYYY LETSSS GOOOOOO

I'm not entirely sure if I would have appreciated this album when it was released in 1994 - my palette hadn't quite matured. But listening to this on the cusp of 49, it makes me realize how much it sucked not having this album in my arsenal for the past 30 years. Buckley has such range, he doesn't stick to one specific genre, so his songs are all beautifully different. The only tracks I had been familiar with were "Last Goodbye" (vaguely) and his rendition of "Hallelujah," which make all other versions (including the original) just pale in comparison. This was a spectacular and haunting listen.

One of my favourite albums, ever, period. Jeff Buckley manages to do more with less, just his amazing voice and a well written song does the job. His own compositions are really good (and are the majority of songs on the album) but his interpretation of the classics Hallelujah and (my personal favourite) Lilac Wine is otherworldly. I never tire of those songs and this 54 year old bloke rarely keeps it dry listening to those songs. Not only is this an amazing album, it is a real legacy album by an artist who died way too young. Very sad. A very easy 5* for me.

Memorably and legendary, "Grace" highlights Jeff Buckley's insane vocal range with an expressive singing that transcends the wild style of his father (the tragic Tim Buckley). With menacing original songs like 'So Real' and several obscure covers: Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' rendered so unlike every other copycat cover, Nina Simone's elegant 'Lilac Wine', Benjamin Britten's austere arrangement of 'Corpus Christi Carole'; populated with songs such as these, this record is loaded with emotion, scope, and trenchant talent. A high five for me.

Awesome, classic album.

Hartverscheurend

I've heard a little from Jeff Buckley. Most of it is his rendition of "Hallelujah" and Chris Cornell citing him as a primary influence on his first solo album Euphoria Mourning. I LOVE that album, so it's incredible getting a deeper look into what Cornell was tapping into when he said that. And wow - the genius on display here is shattering. From the first phrase of the first song I get it. This guy has that special something just overflowing out of him. And it turns out I do know a Jeff Buckley song - "Last Goodbye" came on and I was flooded with nostalgia. That's Cameron Crowe for you. His movies are always an epic tour through must hear classic rock, and probably the best thing about his movie Vanilla Sky is the soundtrack. And in a fun way, the soundtrack actually becomes part of the storyline itself and makes the text of the film that much sweeter. Anyway, I can't say enough good things about this album. Every song is special - plus, "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" is top tier - and every song has that exquisite blend of slightly weird but totally accessible. Can't quite understand why the album initially got a mixed reception at the time of its release, but I am glad it got and continues to get its due because it is a legendary 5 out of 5 collection of songs.

Masterful talent who left us way too young. This is a magnum opus album.

This might be the best album on here. Simultaneously raw and pure, hopeful and hopeless between each song. Truly astounding.

This one is simply amazing. Some of the best male vocal performances ever recorded. Even tough it's a cover song, this is where all the endless versions of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" stem from, as hardly anyone has heard the original and you can practically hear Coldplay being born while listening to songs such as "So Real" or the title track. I do wonder, however, whether this would be held in such high regard had Buckley not tragically died before being able to finish his second album. I think it's great regardless of that, though. Key tracks: Mojo Pin Grace So Real Hallelujah Lover, You Should've Come Over Dream Brother

Classic

He could have gone on to do so much more!

A very unique record. A true talent sadly lost too early. Really good album.

RIP to a real one.

Hallelujah.

Still sounds original and vital, a sound that still appears in music today. Mainstream music made possible by albums like this.

In Feb 1996 Jeff Buckley played my home town. I was keen on going but had a few things on, and figured I'd just see him next time he swung through Australia. Regrets, I've had a few, but that is up on the top of the list. Anyway, this is just a landmark 90s album. Guitar playing is impressive, love how we he can just wrap his thumb over the top and hit those chords. Songwriting is masterful and passionate. But the voice - what a voice! I hadn't played this for years, but listening again I had a new appreciation for how much power and emotion he delivered.

Had never listened to this artist previously and really like him Don't have a favourite song but liked the overall vibe of the album.

Jeff Buckley’s beautiful voice is one of many good reasons for this album to continue to top so many lists after all these years. His silky falsetto, haunting operatic vibrato and his insane ability to belt high notes are all on full display on Grace. The last assignment I spoke about Otis Redding and Bjork being my all time favorite singers, Jeff Buckley is high on that list too. His death was tragic on its own but I can’t help but wonder how his voice and songwriting would have progressed had he not died so young. I imagine he would have had an incredible late phase as his voice began to show signs of wear and tear and his writing grew more reflective and introspective. Jeff was also an incredible guitar player and has some really impressive playing on Grace and the band compliments him perfectly. There’s plenty of peaks and valleys on this album and some songs take their time to build which makes the eventual impact all the more intense and explosive. There’s also a fairly wide variety of styles here, the biggest contrast being between songs “Corpus Christi Carol” which has a soft angelic sound and flows nicely into what almost sounds like a Red Hot Chili Peppers rocker “Eternal Life”. The variety in the compositions, emotive songwriting and vocal execution keeps me coming back to Grace after all these years and I was happy to revisit it today.

one of the best ive ever heard. impactful, to say the least.

A fantastic album I discovered way too late in my life.

Well, what a strange journey I’ve had with this one. I was so disappointed on first listen but something drew my back again and again and now I have listened about 5 times and I think it is truly wonderful. The voice, the guitar, the production. I get it. What a loss

This is a great album. I had only heard a couple Jeff Buckley's songs prior to going into this, and I'm a little disappointed in myself that I never listened to this before. I heard people for years mention him and this album, but it apparently was never enough to get me to seek it out. Anyway, everything on this album is great. Every track is great in it's own way. At times it even reminds me of early Radiohead. He has a great voice, and the guitar on here is great as well. Sad we didn't get anymore from Jeff before he left us.

Ethereal — I love the raw passion Jeff Buckley provides in his music. The album makes me feel a series of emotions: "Last Goodbye" and "Lover..." are heart-wrenching, "Eternal Life" is raw and angry, "Corpus Christi Carol" is angelic. Even the outtake "Forget Her" was a marvelous listen. Mostly, the fact that he cemented himself into musical history with one single album (and a few compilations) is a testament to the potential Jeff Buckley had. His flame burned out too soon.

Amazing!

Wonderful album. A cohesive combination of rythmn and blues with 90's pop rock elements. Fundamentally brilliant song writing by a generational talent lost too soon. This album is timeless.

In every song, I heard some parts that I really liked. Either a guitar riff with an interesting rhythm or melody, or a vocal choice that sounded really cool. But then nearly every song also had some part that got me bored, maybe just because the songs are longer than most modern ones. Lilac Wine was straight up beautiful. And there’s Hallelujah. I was wondering why I had heard of Jeff Buckley. Beautiful rendition. His falsetto is great, and he uses it a lot, but his chest voice is also great in a completely different way.

I was worried that I was too high on this album after my first listen because I was starting a road trip and excited for the weekend. After my second listen on Sunday evening, I can firmly say that this album is a five. Yes, the standout song is a cover, but I think there’s a lot more to offer even if the styling of this cover is now how every cover since has been done. Lover, You Should Have Come Over, Forget Her, Grace, and Last Goodbye all caught my attention instantly, and Eternal Life comes out of nowhere absolutely jamming. The only critique I have is that Corpus Cristi Carol seems completely out of place and isn’t that good in general, but it also helps the shock factor with Eternal Life coming in with heavy rock right after. I’m willing to overlook that blemish with how much I enjoyed listening to this album.

sexy af

I'm shook. This album is incredible, and feels very intimate and raw, like you’re sitting in the room with Jeff. The vocals are full of emotion, almost like early Radiohead but more delicate. It draws you in, not with force, but with a quiet intensity. Simple yet deeply affecting. Blown away.

this is an all timer 96

chef buckley cause he cooked on this one

HOLY SHIT ILY JEFF 5/5 if u don’t think the same.. u smell and it will be your last goodbye on this planet 🙏

life changing 5/5

I think this album is lovely and I do like listening to it but it also makes me a bit sad due what played out a few years. Very sad….

This is on of, if not, the most utterly beautiful album to ever exist. Jeff’s voice is so expressive and works on every level attempted. Every song he touches turns to gold. I love this album. So raw, so talented, so dead. Tragically profound. 5/5

As much soul as a white boy can have.

Instant 5. Don't need to say much - Lover, You Should've Come Over and Mama You've Been on My Mind (on expanded version) are my favourites. Prior especially the soundtrack to my first breakup and bonding with Dom. The title track gets better with every listen. Last goodbye as well. Only once I read that he was a big Led Zeppelin fan that the dots connected slightly better - him singing Whole Lotta Love before he died. Greta Van Shite should look at Buckley's way of channelling Led Zeppelin rather than just ripping them off. Very difficult to tell what is a cover and isn't because all the songs belong on the album. So Real is like a soft, psychological horror score condensed into 5 minutes. Stopping at LYSCO to enjoy it.

One of the greatest albums ever released.

Absolutely incredible.

True brilliance. An album you have to listen in full. A unique style and he makes the covers on the album truly his own too. Such a shame we only got one album from him 5/5

A helluva album to sgtart this journey on. I always forget Buckley only ever put out one studio album. You can definitely see how he influenced Thom Yorke a bit to get a little more melodic and falsetto on later Radiohead records. His Hallelujah cover is iconic and some might argue the definitive version, with all due respect to Leonard Cohen.

Classic and amazing. Vibes vibes vibes.

The perfect 90’s rock album, such a tragedy this was the only album we got from Jeff Buckley.

I remember my brother having this on, and liking it, but not loving it... It turns out I do in fact love it!

Perfect album. Underrated guitar player. Eternal Life is absolutely rocking.

Never heard of this guy and, wow, it is a shame that he died, because this was awesome. First, his voice is really good. There is a lot of emotion in how he sings and it sounds nostalgic yet new, maybe because of the 90s sound. Also the song structures continuously surprised me. My favorites here are Grace, So Real, and Lover, You Should Have Come Over.

Wasn't sure of this at first then the more I listened the more it grew on me. Will definitely be listening again.

What a voice, what a guitarist, what songs. I think the most baller thing is that there are two covers, but he thought "80s Leonard Cohen and a choral piece by Britten is what we need".

Gorgeous. More genre-spanning than I thought. Such talent lost so young :(

Some of the best sad music ever.

Another surprisingly strong album I can see adding to my main rota. Hallelujah came out of the blue compared to the rest

Brilliant fucking album.

What a debut. Huge splash. Always leave the audience wanting more.

My generation (and younger) probably only heard Tim, the dad, on account of Jeff. And when you hear dad's Song to the Siren - which is one of the greatest songs of all time - you don't really feel the impact because you feel, based, on the genius of this record, of course its in the genes and why wouldn't the dad also be writing the greatest songs you've ever heard? Grace is diverse, comple, popular and virtuoso. Its one of the best records of the 1990s and to think I've been listening to it for 30 years makes me feel old. A talent gone too soon.

Other than Hallelujah I hadn’t heard much about Jeff Buckley. But what an album! The range is incredible. Such a shame that this was to become his only album.

5 Sterne aufgrund romantischer Verklärung der Vergangenheit

No idea who this was before starting the album. I was blown away by the full sound and emotion.

Fantastic album and writing. Great guitar work, and the cover of Hallelujah was incredible. Not one of my favorite albums of all time, but definitely one I've gone back to a few times. In the scheme of this list so far, it deserves a 5 against the competition by my scale.

Such a brilliant album.

Oooooh. Any excuse for listening to Jeff. It’s already a 10/10 btw. Mojo Pin, what an opener and then into the title track Grace. It’s so good. I wish he could’ve made more 😔. God this hallelujah is so good.

A hauntingly beautiful masterpiece. Raw and vulnerable emotion mixed with driving and fun melodies. A perfect balance of upbeat and somber. Nothing but good things to say

A truly great album with some great vocals and songwriting. There are a couple songs I am not crazy about but I can see myself enjoying them more on future listens. I can also see how he inspired Thom Yorke to use his falsetto more. 4.5 (but may go up to a 5 on future listens)

Love album

A really solid rock album with a mellow, laid back feel. I enjoyed this one while doing work.

It's really funny to me that this is the first one... This was my favourite album ever made for most of my life, and is still easily top 3. Favourites: 1. Lover, You Should've Come Over 2. Mojo Pinn 3. Last Goodbye 4. Forget Her 5. Hallelujah My Rating: 100/100

Just brilliant, what a voice, what an album… 4.8

I absolutely love this album and have since the ninties when i first got it, I remember being in shock when he died it was such a promising career cut short. It's hard to pick out highlights on the album as everything a great but for me Last Goodbye with its catchy chorus, rocket Eternal Life and the heartbreaking renditions of Lilac Wine & Hallelujah are personal highlights.

Instant 5 as soon as I saw the album pop up. It took me a long time to appreciate Buckley. I was a hater of his "Hallelujah" cover for a long time (I always preferred the Rufus Wainwright version). But over the last year it finally clicked for me. This was one of the first vinyl records I purchased after buying a turntable, and it was a very good decision. Buckley managed to convey emotion in a way few vocalists are capable of, and he had one of the best voices in the business. His songs are haunting, his vocals somehow delicate and powerful at the same time (like on his cover of Nina Simone's "Lilac Wine"). The musicianship is great as well — I particularly love the guitar on the title track. There's not a bad song on this album, and it's a shame we didn't get to hear what else he was capable of because of his tragic death. Highlights: Grace, Lilac Wine, Hallelujah, Lover You Should've Come Over

Beautiful voice. Amazing guitarist.

I’ve listened to this album before but just had it on in the background. This time I listened on a good stereo and read the lyrics. What a difference. This album really rocks at a lot of points too. Lots of great songs. A lot of pain too. I will definitely be listening more to this.

Great songs, nice easy listen

Jeff Buckley has an amazing voice and he blew me away

I loved this CD, you can see how it influenced Radiohead. His legacy lives on.

Amazing

Wow. What an amazing listen! From the first note, I was hooked. His voice is great, and his guitar work is awesome. The album offers a perfect mix of folk, rock, and soul. I had to look further into Jeff's bio while listening. I knew he had passed, but imagine my surprise finding out he drowned. What a damn shame. This adds an even deeper sadness to a record already steeped in emotion. Another interesting fact I discovered is that he once had a band with TOOL's future drummer Danny Carey. Although they never recorded in a studio, some live tracks exist from their time together. Buckley's story is absolutely wild, and his debut album is incredible. I don't think I've ever gone from being unfamiliar with an artist (aside from his beautiful "Hallelujah" cover) to giving a 5-star rating so quickly. Grace is an unreal, absolutely awesome discovery, thanks to this hit-or-miss list.

Alt rock, singer-songwriter. Just an amazing album beginning to end. I don't really have any favorite moments, the whole thing was just incredible and sincere. Just dripping with melancholy and love and romance. And great variety too, never a moment where I was wanting it to end. Such a gifted songwriter and musician. Will revisit for sure. 5/5

Amazing

if lana was a man in the nineties

I heard Last Goodbye on the Atlanta alternative station when I was a sophomore in high school and I fell in love with it. There are so many great songs on this album. Love the lilac wine cover.

The perfect album. Every song is dripping with passion and impeccable musicianship, one great song transitioning into another, i get lost in it everytime. Last Goodbye is one of best songs of the 90s, but Grace is my favorite track today - that changes every couple of years with so many choices.

Soaring talent and range, and it's such a good things when talent and commercial success an somehow happen with compromise. If course the tragedy being his death and this is all we have. The emotional intensity and attention needed make this wonderful to listen to, and such an exemplar, but also I need to pause for air at times. It's so intense. Which is why I would have loved to see him mature and fill out in style and repertoire. If this is the ernest exhibition price to pass the exam, I would have loved to see his lyrical expressionism develop and relax, and to see his performance personality grow to give room for playfulness and fun to enter on stage too. I've had the album for decades. It the kind of album you find when moving how or rearranging furniture and you compulsively out it on. It was so rare for pure vocal talent to be pop. Lilac Wine is a song, somehow I heard as it I had never played the album. I did need to pause. I can't fault or criticise this. It's past that point. It's easily in a top 500 or 300 or 100 list as something to hear once. It can be almost unbearable intensity and there is its purity - nothing is held back. I can't hear this with critical ears. Only amazement. As an aside, I think Katie Noonan is another of these rare voices which is such pleasure to hear doing virtuoso things, but even more trained and practiced... I don't out them side by side- but for vocals .

Fucking incredible, reminds me a lot of the melancholy in elliot smith

This is one of my favorite albums of all time, top 3 for sure. It's just so perfect in every way - instrumentation, production, lyrics. And, man, that guy could sing. What a voice. I mean I know that music is subjective to a point but if you don't like this album, sorry you're wrong and need to go back and listen again. Jeff Buckley was one of the few geniuses we've had in modern music. So much of the music that came after Jeff Buckley would not have happened without this album. It is a masterpiece and it is so sad that we didn't get more from him in his much too brief life. ∞/5

Top5 Album all time! What a joy to listen to, and what a disappointment to see that Hallelujah doesn't even come close to top 100 most played songs on Spotify.

Hauntingly beautiful - I often wonder whether this would have blown up the way it did had Jeff lived longer, and whether he would have continued making boundary-pushing music or become a bit of a twat. Either way we're blessed to have this effort.

Gorgeous, nuanced, so much talent, such a tragedy his early death

I don’t deserve to listen to an album this good.

Wow. Just gorgeous. Complex and fluid. Bummer about the tugboat.

this was overall a great album. Songs like “So Real” really set the album apart. Very interesting to see how this really influenced people like Tom Yorke. I’ve heard about Jeff Buckley but never gave a listen. Extremely underrated

5/5/5. Stunning. Everything I could ever want in a singer of Jeff Buckley's caliber. He is in his own lane. The songs are often dark, melancholic, yet so intimate and live-feeling. You get the feeling that an audience member could shuffle or cough a little too loudly and interrupt the spell that he casts. I think this album is kind of un-repeatable. The more I get into this list, the more I realize how much of a rarity it is that a singer of Jeff Buckley's abilities is also a good songwriter, also a conjurer of worlds, also such a unique and yet somehow restrained performer. A true troubadour. Shame we get only one album. In an alternate world, a sophomore album would have been hard-pressed to beat this. 5/5

His voice is haunting. Not a lot of memorable top line melodies on this, his biggest album, other than the Cohen cover. But the way he vocally delivers each and every song as well as some of the interesting psychedelic arrangements makes this album a must listen and must have for me. Wow.

I have never listen to this album but I know intimately his version of Hallelujah, which is one of my favourite songs. It’s a gem, that song, and it’s amazing to hear it in context here, in the middle of an album that wraps around it. It puts the song in context both musically and lyrically. Production is great, arrangements suberb. The band is great and Buckley’s voice is perfect for this material. Added to the library.

I spent many, many hours listening to this record when it came out. It is fascinating to revisit these albums that have shaped my musical taste in so many ways. This one smells like sleepless nights with friends, listening to music, playing cool and thinking about what it would mean to live the kind of life that Buckley and others talk about in their songs. What it would mean to be in love like this, to live like this, feel like this, dream like this. We were a bunch of teenagers trying to understand what being alive was supposed to mean, by listening to these songs. Jeff Buckley taught us a lot. This album also opened my eyes and ears to other music that would become important: Nina Simone, Benjamin Britten, Captain Beefheart (Gary Lucas, who co-wrote 2 songs here, used to be Beefheart's guitarist in the later part of his career). Life courses through these songs, often over the top epic, but always sincere. He caught lightning in a bottle with this one. Many tried after, but I can't think of anyone who got it in the same way. And then he was gone. Just like that, it was over. This is one that walks with me.

Jeez, this is just such an incredible album. Buckley's control of his voice, the musicianship, the 90s singer-songwriter vibe that's so much more. It feels like most 90s music with the familiar tropes like acoustic guitar supported by strings but at this same time is just unique.

I spent years trying to get into this album. I knew its reputation, but I couldn’t figure out what made it special. No doubt Buckley voice is enough for some to make it a stand out, but vocals alone aren’t usually enough for me. Not that I’m speaking negatively of the musicianship present, which was also immediately obvious when I first dove in, as in every subsequent attempt there after, but I just couldn’t quite connect. Then one day, my shuffle threw on Lover, You Should’ve Come Over, and in that moment I realized it was simply one of the greatest songs I had ever heard. Everything else fell into place after that, and every song began hitting harder than it ever had before. It wasn’t just talent that stood out to me anymore, it was the emotion, and unique beauty that accompanies every song on the album. Brilliant stuff.

Masterpiece

I never listened to this album before now, and WOW!

very chilled out rock. it's mostly mellow but steadily goes into grunge territory. keeps you very interested with what's going on throughout. is it prog? maybe not, but it's very close to it in more ways than one i feel. shame this album was the only one he did.

One of the most mournfully sweet, magical albums. My god, if angels could speak through people, they absolutely sang through Jeff Buckley.

Amazing voice my goodness. Always loved this album. Gone too soon.

Need I say anything

#196. I've listened to this album many times before, and this time it was just as brilliant as every other time. It's great start to finish. I have no complaints, really. 5/5: perfect.

Beast of a debut. What a talent? Sad that he went too soon

Simply awesome!!

Classic, incredible album

it's so good & the lilac wine cover knocks me straight out.

Aside from the vocal talent on display across the whole album, I love this album dearly because Lover You Should've Come Over will remain my heartbreak anthem forever, even makes me want to have my heart broken so I can feel how he felt singing.

I recall the first time I heard about this album and being excited to listen, and when I did... eh, I would have given it 3 stars maybe. As time has passed though, the album grew on me. Prior to this appearing on the 1001 Album list, I would have given this 4 stars, which is what I expected when I pulled it up for a listen. But wow, this is 5 star material. As Brad Pitt said about the album, "It just... it's under my skin." Interesting side note for those who didn't read the full Wikipedia article. Bob Dylan named Buckley "one of the great songwriters of the decade", and David Bowie considered Grace to be the best album ever made. Those two guys know a thing or two about music :) 5 stars.

Ah, what a delightful album. And I gave it a good listen too. I noticed that Lilac Wine stood out a bit compared to the songs around it, making sense that it’s a cover. Eternal life also stood out quite a bit as being a more hard rock sound. I quite enjoyed it. And of course the classic love songs. Lover you should’ve come over. So heartbreaking. His voice is so full of emotion. An album which seems to be there for me during heartbreak. Lyrically pleasant. Love it

One of the biggest losses to music was Jeff Buckley. This album is full of examples of his incredible talent.

te amo jeff, de lo mejor que escuché nunca

Was looking forward to checking this one out, and it was great.

Jeffs a bit of a whiny boy but I’m here for it 100% all the time. One of my favourite, if not my favourite album. Classic post break up Elliot music this. Best version of Hallelujah. Lyrically just sad and beautiful, real cathartic gut punch of an album. Lover You Should've Come Over is a favourite of mine, paints a beautiful picture lyrically and I'm a fan of a unique time signature (6/8) I know Forget Her is a bonus track so I don't know if I should count it but I love it so much. Been on many drunk night walks listening to this album and feeling sorry for myself, 10/10 would recommend.

This album really is a masterpiece!

A few years ago I heard the singer/guitarist of one of my favorite bands, bought Jeff Buckley's guitar but I didn't even know who he was or why that was significant. Now I finally understand.

Truly incredible

We're on fire now, another on of my favourites of all time. Singer-Songwriter albums can be really hard to pull off but are by far some of the best albums when done right. Jeff Buckley was always going to be a star, his dad was a huge artist and song-writer so it was clearly in the family. This album came together so perfectly, the instruments are so unique to me and I do not know who played them or any information on the recording but it just assists his voice so well. A voice which is just brilliant, one of my favourite male vocalists which I normally struggle to really like male vocalists compared to female. This is one of the exceptions it is just so brilliant and it is a clear example of how someone can really produce a great album with the backing of a big label. He struggle a lot with living up to the success and from what I know the album was quite slept on when it came out, it is such a shame he never got to see huge success definitely one of the biggest losses of talent. I actually showed this album to a friend at college and it is probably now his favourite album always playing it always mentioning. We even played Forget Her at the college gig the album was such a big part of college and I still love it. I think a lot of these songs would have been really big in the 2000's like "last goodbye", and I think that stands why it took more time to get popular. I do have it currently as my 21st favourite albums, singer-songwriter is one genre where I don't feel there is much space for dead space. Hallelujah is definitely an overplayed song but this is it's best rendition and I think it works perfectly. The only 2 songs I am not hugely fond of are Lilac Wine and Corpus Christi Carol. Replace the latter with Forget Her, which somehow didn't make the official release, and you have a Top 10 album. Stand Out Songs Grace Lover, You Should've Come Over Dream Brother

Listened to it many many times. Got in my attention after I read that it influenced many bands… like Radiohead. Fall in love with it ever since. Too many good ones here. “So real”, “lover you should come over”. Good memories. Amazing album

One of my favourite albums ever. No skips

I was VERY into this album 15 or so years ago (in my 20s). I believe I got into Jeff Buckley toward the end of high school, because I remember listening to "Last Goodbye" with a group of friends around and telling the girl I had a thing for that she might like it, and a different friend gave me shit because they played it all the time on a radio station that we listened to a lot at the time. If I have my memories correctly lined up, that would've been summer '04. So, shit... 20 years ago... Anyway, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this much having not listened to it in probably 10 or more years. I never lost appreciation or respect, but I just don't still listen to very much from that time in my life. Tastes evolve, times change, and so do we. Well this dude's voice is still as impressive as ever, and the music doesn't sound as dated as I'd thought it would. For a 30 year old record, it holds up quite well. Is it fair to call it timeless? His influences are clear, his training is obvious... This album is very good. I might even let the Legacy Edition bonus disc section play out...

Whats not to like, I mean it's Jeff Buckley

I had listened to this album before and previously been at a 4 on it, but it was great to listen to it again cuz I'm bumping it up to a 5. I don't think every song is a 5 out of 5 for me, but the opening of the album, closing of the album, and of course hallelujah, are just absolutely perfect. Such an awful loss, but I am glad we at least have this album

How this got mixed reviews when it was released is beyond me

One of my favourite albums of all time I could honestly talk about how much I love it for hours!!!!

Absolutely essential.

Every song is beautiful

AUTOMATIC 5 STARS. ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME. Jeff Buckley should be considered a legend in every regard. Do his vocals turn some people off? Sure but so do other legends like Geddy Lee and that fuckin guy from Placebo but lyrically and emotionally this shit slaps and will make you remember that one ex who destroyed your soul but you can’t blame them because they’re too beautiful to even be alive.
