Perfect album
Fantastic top to bottom. So much depth to their sound - they're incredible at making you feel a vibe
I still have a hard time understanding that Funeral is a debut album. Arcade Fire revolutionized the entire genre with this. There is an edge and a sense of awareness to this that their more polished and pretty contemporaries lacked. Arcade Fire, for me, peaked early on. They just don’t get any better than this.
Great debut album from Arcade Fire. This is one of my personal favorites of the 2000s, an emotional, grand journey from front to back. A must listen for any indie enthusiasts
great stuff from mtl!
One of the albums that cemented the importance and ethos of the indie rock early this century. Love this album!
Had this on heavy rotation in the 2000s, but hadn't listened for quite a while. Still stands up as a top notch album. Probably Arcade Fire's best, the next couple of albums were great too, until Reflektor went downhill. Also, shame Win Butler turned out to be a creep.
omg!! better than my expectations. first five songs or so were really great, rest of the album was still quite good but didn't reach those heights in my opinion. i was pleasantly surprised because i've listened to arcade fire's newer stuff and not liked it very much, but this is actually awesome. there's a homeliness about it that i like a lot.
Never heard of this band or album but absolutely loved it. Not hard to see why it has won son many accolades, they're well deserved.
Excellent indie
As I said in another review, I like the first two Arcade Fire albums so this was an easy listen, however I really do wonder if they needed 3 albums on the list. They are a great band but did they need 3?
Ik vind dit een heel lekker album. Fijne nummers en mooi geheel
"Funeral" is the debut album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire. Indie rock, chamber rock, art rock and baroque pop. Yeah, sure. Well, everyone in the band seems to play all instruments. And there are all instruments. The album was recorded in Montreal and produced by the band for a mere $10,000. The album title and the basis for several songs came from several bandmembers recently losing family members. Multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Régine Chassagne lost her grandmother and her husband Win Butler and his brother Will lost their grandfather (both multi-instrumentalists as well). The song themes include alienation, loss of innocence, frustration with and tensions in governments and family ties in neighborhoods. This album had widespread critical acclaim propelling them to indie rock icons. An organ hum, undulating strings and a repetitive piano melody open one of the four neighborhood songs in "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)." The drums kick in and the song keeps building with the pace picking up and increasing. I've had a lot of songs building over the past two days. The song is set in the 1960's with two kids sneaking off to each other through tunnels leaving parents distraught with the Vietnam War, assassinations and sex, drug and rock and roll. There's been a few songs I've heard where as soon as I heard it I went out to immediately buy the album and "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" did that for me. A pop beat, jangly guitars and an initial xylophone melody. Layered guitars. One of a few anthems on this albums. This song was inspired by the 1998 ice storm in Montreal resulting in a week-long blackout. Overall, about alienation. "Crown of Love" has weeping strings and a piano and then totally changes towards the end going basically disco. The second half of this album has several songs where you see the music style change within the song. Welcome to big anthem #2 in "Wake Up." Also, Arcade Fire welcome to permanence as arena-level artists. '"Oh-Oh-Oh....-Oh." You know it. Guitar, drums, strings. Another musical change at the end with Régine taking over lead vocals from Win. Loss of innocence and trying to reach someone who's suffered trauma. A repetitive piano and bass help build tension in "Rebellion (Lies)." "Every time you close your eyes. Lies. Lies." Maybe the struggle for a government you want to what currently is. Yeah, this is a pretty landmark indie and overall album. The songs are musically optimistic and uplifting despite mostly lyrically dire landscapes. Most songs build with a chamber/baroque pop start ending in more of rock and roll realm. It's quite a feat writing a few anthems on your debut album. I do like several of the subsequent Arcade Fire albums quite a bit. But, "Funeral" is without question my favorite and their best.
comfort album
Light 9
A defining moment of the indie rock scene of the first decade of the 2000's. Considering that indie rock really saw its heyday in that period, that's really saying something. The album begins with what remains one of my favourite Arcade Fire songs and one of my favourite songs in general, "Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)". Set amongst an incredibly rich and artfully arranged array of instruments, this song is a masterclass in album opening songwriting that gradually builds to a powerful and memorable crescendo. That the band is able to maintain such quality throughout the entire album is a testament to its greatness. They oscillate between harder-hitting and energetic tracks ('Laika', 'Power Out', 'Wake Up', 'Rebellion') and more subdued, reflective pieces ('Une Annee Sans Lumiere', '7 Kettles', 'In the Backseat') in such a seamless and purposeful way, making for an extremely enjoyable listening experience that is never overwhelming, despite the thematic and musical heft carried by these songs. While Arcade Fire would go on to release more popular albums, in my opinion, this remains their magnum opus. Absolute freakin fire.
One of the most well textured projects I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It carries its air of melancholia flawlessly with soaring strings, strained vocals, and beautifully crunchy guitar tones.
Had it on in the background and wasn't really locked it but there was something there that made me want to give it another run. Listened again with headphones on and yeah, now I get it.
The nostalgia is strong today. Not much of a fan outside of this album but I can't get enough of this one. straight up (Arcade) fire
BEST DEBUT ALBUM EVER (in my opinion haha). There are definitely more influential debuts, but for my money this album is the best home run for a bands first time at the bat. Just so perfectly put together. The energy that runs through this thing is so insanely positive and breathtaking. Love it.
Killer album
This album was really good. my favorite track by far was crown of love and I will be adding it to my playlist. I highly recommend the full album if you like indie/alt music.
5/5
This is the first album I'm going to have to recuse myself from giving an objective rating. Hearing this album at 14 / 15 years old really did change the type of music I enjoyed. I keep revisiting it thinking my enjoyment of it will diminish but nope, still as good. I can't believe they made an album so genuinely earnest that somehow isn't cheesy. 5/5
J'aurais dû mettre 4 à l'autre car celui-ci est meilleur (trop généreux)
One of my all time favourites. One of those albums which I have to listen to as an album. Broad, wide open instrumentation, vulnerable voice, great melodies. Amazin album.
Pretty much a perfect album. It’s classic indie rock, packed with emotion and catharsis, incredible songwriting, and inspired musicianship. This album will always make me feel like my heart is spilling out of my chest.
Another one of those where I have to separate the artist from the art. This album could have gotten way out of hand, but they balance the melodrama with true earnest intensity and rich instrumental arrangements. Nothing on here seems fake or overdone or contrived, which is a massive improvement over their contemporaries. That they achieved this with a debut album is all the more amazing.
This is a super important album to me. I listened to it for the first time my freshman year of college and it was during that formative period where your musical horizons tend to expand in lockstep with your social horizons. It's one of those albums that I distinctly remember the first time I really heard it, and it will always be one of the most complete albums of all time in my opinion. I will always get a little bit of a chill when I hear the opening chords of Neighborhood #1. I don't need to listen to it again, but I'm going to anyway, because it's a fucking masterpiece. Standouts: Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), Neighborhood #2 (Laika), Une Annee Sans Lumiere, Crown of Love, Wake Up, Rebellion (Lies)
minne om vgs
Will I die from a nostalgia overload? Probably, yes. But it'll be worth it
Obvious 5, so good.
When this album came out it blew my mind. I was just in the throws of discovering new indie rock that began around 1999. Bands like Built to Spill, Spoon, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Luna, Modest Mouse, Eleventh Dream Day, pj Harvey, The White Stripes, Idlewild, Interpol, The National, GSYBE, pavement, Silver Jews and dozens and dozens of others had dominated my listening for the last few years. Then this album comes out and takes the Indie music world by storm. A band from my home town, shining a light on our music scene and dominating the talk around indie music. And then the accolades start pouring in from the likes of Bowie, Springsteen, David Byrne, Coldplay and U2. Anyway the music on the album is bold and beautiful and big and way too accomplished to be a debut album. And the live shows so incredibly energetic and epic. Well for me this was an album that defined an era, both musically and culturally (on a small scale). And the songs are all absolutely forst rate. SUre, no really new ideas nut the execution of the ideas they do have is nearly flawless. 5 stars
Keep setting me up for spikes and I spike. Another one of my faves. Had it on repeat in high school.
Wow, mid 2000s nostalgia is rushing over me. It's like alt rock with a folk and punk undertone. (Honestly their aggressive songs remind me of the stranglers a bit!) But they have so much range and a lot more heart than other rock bands of their time. Great lead vocalist(s), and great use of so many instruments: all the standards plus strings and xylophone or some shit. Each song is its own standalone great track. The album is so easy to listen to. A great road trip album for sure.
One of my all-time favorites!
An all-time fave.
I was already a fan of this one, but I hadn't heard the whole album in a while. I had thought The Suburbs was my favorite Arcade Fire album, but I think I was mistaken. This one is a near masterpiece.
I've heard this album so many times. The songs are so familiar, and it's interesting listening to this album for the first time in at least 5 years... I still strongly identify with the music, but it's different now. My mindset has changed, and the songs have different meaning to me now. What an album!
A great record... 9/10 Give me something I haven't heard lol.
I do enjoy me some Arcade Fire. Wake Up and Rebellion (Lies) are such great tracks.
This slaps. Hell of a debut! Fave tracks - "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" is a fantastic opener. "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" is awesome, and "Wake Up" is great too!
they're awesome, hell yeah
This album sounds like the final week of summer break before your first year of college - the time is about 8PM, the sun is setting, you're lying on a hammock in your backyard, thinking about all the fun stuff you did with your friends and how nervous you are about the future. The atmospheric pressure is about 1035.2456 hPa and the ozone level is about 339.19 AQ. You know what I mean. How did they do it? I don't have it in me to rate this anything but a 5/5.
Win Butler might be a creep but this is a nearly perfect album
Too me this album is perfection. ⭐️☄️🤍
FUCK YOU, WIN BUTLER
What an amazing album. The full experience is brilliant. Saved tracks: Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), Neighborhood #2 (Laika), Wake Up, Haiti, Rebellion (Lies)
One of my formative albums. Neighborhood songs are all great in their own ways, but Wake Up is my favorite and a top level pantheon song for me. Goosebumps every time.
listened to before: yes!! favorite song (overall): crown of love least favorite song (overall): don't think i can choose one, love them all saddest song: neighborhood #4 (7 kettles) most upbeat: neighborhood #3 (power out) best instrumental: haiti pros: call him pretentious but win butler can write a song about growing up. both funeral and the suburbs make me feel an empty nostalgia. however, listening to this album as i'm getting ready to graduate, and becoming an adult and everything is changing, it hurts a little more. the lyrics and the sounds, after listening again, i think i like this project more than the suburbs. cons: arcade fire is so near and dear to my heart, i cried listening to this, therefore i can't give it any cons. best moment: beginning of neighborhood #1 (1+2 choruses)
One of their finest albums
A great album,. Wake up and Rebellion are 2 of my favorite tracks from this album and period
Probably the closest album so far to my interests
I was able to listen to this while reading. I enjoyed.
Great first choice, masterpiece from Arcade Fire (that apparently just got worse after this)
Great album. Well balanced.
Probably their best album
Probably due to emotional associations back when I listened to it more regularly, still a great album.
Funeral, the debut album from Arcade Fire, is a masterpiece that has stood the test of time. Released in 2004, it was a pivotal album for me during my college years and marked my introduction to the world of indie rock. This album grabs hold of the listener and doesn't let go. The driving drums and soaring violin melodies set the stage for an album full of emotional intensity and musical depth. "Wake Up", one of the album's most well-known tracks, is a rousing anthem that still gets heavy rotation on my playlists to this day. But it's not just the upbeat tracks that make Funeral such a memorable album. "Crown of Love" and "In the Backseat" showcase the band's ability to craft intimate, introspective ballads that are just as powerful as their more energetic tracks. And "Rebellion (Lies)", with its relentless energy and catchy chorus, is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt frustrated with the world. All in all, Funeral is an album that has had a lasting impact on me. It introduced me to the world of indie rock and pulled me deeper into that scene. It's an album that I still return to time and time again, and it's one that I highly recommend to anyone who loves passionate, emotionally charged music.
5. Top notch
Not 1st listen. Probably one of my favourite albums from the 2000s, the opening track still gets to me 10 yrs after the 1st time I heard it (didn’t know it when it was new). HL: “Tunnels”, “Wake Up”, “7 Kettles”, “Crown of Love”, “Rebellion”, “In the Backseat” Dec 10 2022
A landmark album for the indie rock genre in the 2000s. Arcade Fire's best work.
Super good neighborhood album
Stellar
This is an easy 5 for me. Not a bad song on this one, packed with full sound and great energy. It’s just such a well crafted album and they do such a great job building a song towards that burst. I’ll never stop returning to this one. 5 stars
A beaitiful landmark in 2000s indie rock, full of rich lush instrumentations, plenty of strings and horns that fill the space and bring out the power of the songs. The lyrics are optimistic, and both vocalists are expressive, with the ethereal back vocals supporting the mood and complexity of each song. The songs are cohesive yet independently complete. Each song has its hook that stands it apart, each one as memorable as last. Not a single bad track, they were all memorable in some way and bought time between my favorites. It's incredible how over half the album could compete for not just the lead single, but for the claim to one of the best songs of the decade. I was a bit disappointed with Neon Bible, but that only brings out how special and genius this record is.
i really enjoyed the album, never heard it before until today and it did not disappoint very wonderful
I know some songs from Arcade Fire, but this was my first time listening to their debut as a whole. It's a great work, musically and lyrically. I don't have any bad comments about what I've listened to now! It was delightful to (re)discover a band that was just "a standard indie rock band" until today.
That's perfect. Another Arcade Fire album, right as my life turns around. Fuck. 5
Tuesday, work uneventful, grocery shop, kickball, 1v3, 1st W, astrobar, jog home, leftovers on porch for election
Great album.
Immediately on the opening song, there is the overriding sense of joy that carries through the entire album. It really is a stunning work from start to finish and is clearly deserving of the praise it initially earned, and its inclusion on this list.
Far from the generic nostalgia sound of "The Suburbs" and the synth infused "Neon Bible", "Funeral" is a masterpiece. Unlike its successors, this album achieved the genuine emotion-driven epicness, and perhaps that's what they've been trying to do again since. Never been a fan of Arcade Fire but this album is so beautiful.
Who knew I needed this? One of the only albums that I can remember being embraced by everyone that listened to it. Amazing and awesome.
This album is so linked to our final year or two in Los Angeles, when we lived in our best apartment, had the best commutes, were paid the best, and were newlyweds. And, if memory serves, they were the last show we saw there at the Hollywood Bowl. Extra points for that alone. I know some people really don’t like Arcade Fire. I don’t get it. I mean, yeah, they flaunt their Canadian-ness with their French lyrics here and there. But some things should just be in French, if for no other reason than to make the dumb Americans feel left out or less than. I love this album. I haven’t listened to it for awhile so it’s like having a yummy dinner with an old friend. I like their signature downbeat metronomic pulse in many of their songs (makes for great exercise listening!). I especially like how it goes almost double speed at the end of Crown of Love (I also love how the end of the song goes from minor to major chords—ends in such a bright way). I need to add Wake Up to my battlecry song playlist. And while I’m always tempted to stop listening as the last song starts, I remind myself to stick it out because the last half is worth it. Partial star off for stupid titles that are followed by far-better parentheticals. And for the French. Still 5 stars.
"Funeral" was a revelation of early 2000s indie rock. I listened to this album over and over and over, and it inspired a shift in my musical tastes and interests. This is one of my favorite albums of all time, and even though it turns out Win Butler is a total piece of crap, as a piece of art "Funeral" still stands the test of time. I'll dock it one star, maybe even a couple, because listening to and thinking about Arcade Fire now feels me with regret and confusion. But it still comes out a 5, because it's that scale-breaking kind of album.
This album benefits from the context in which it was discovered. I had grown very weary of what passed for early 2000s "alternative" rock and this album comes along and it was love at first listen. I had also just started dating someone really great so the time in my life when this album was on heavy rotation was rose colored for sure.
I listened to this album a lot a ways back and it is just as good now as it was then. There is not a single weak song included. The sounds are layer upon layer of understated grandiosity. I complained about Win’s voice on the other Arcade Fire album we had previously. I have no such complaints here. I never paid much attention (obviously) but I had no idea he was saying, “a tunnel from my window to yours” in Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels). I thought “window to yours” was some French thrown in there. So I guess Win could have any coated better. It’s inconsequential as this album is solid from start to finish.
First time listening to this album. Had to go through twice. Some of these songs are just breathtaking. They are theatrical and tremendously creative. The pace is really upbeat so it can make your heart race to keep up. Butler’s vocals are at times reminiscent of David Byrne, and at other times of Iggy Pop. You can see why David Bowie enjoyed them so much. They are clearly his musical children. Will certainly keep listening to this.
Al deze nummers passen zo goed samen. Het vierluik 'neighbourhood' is geniaal. Topplaat
hard to listen at first, then cannot stop listening. True dat.
4.5*
LP
Enjoyed this more than any other of their future albums
I really liked this album. Something about it makes me feel happy and nostalgic. Probably because Wake Up was on the Where the Wild Things Are movie soundtrack (which ended up being a depressing movie and kinda of a let down from the kid's book).
cool
Very familiar but gave a re-listen anyway to see if I can still enjoy the music despite the allegations against Win Butler. It’s a damn fine album and I still like this a lot. Way more whoops than I remember.
heard it
喜欢 wake up,躁动得恰到好处
I'm a big Arcade Fire fan in general. Overall a brilliant album—moving from theatrical to anthemic, and even poppy in spots. Rebellion remains one of my favorite Arcade Fire tracks. While not my fav in their catalog, it still gets a 5.
Warm/raw production and energy to the entire album. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire album. Favorite tracks: Power Out and Wake Up
cool logo
I absolutely love this album and reminds me of happy teen years when I discovered Arcade Fire. I love the grand and varied nature of AF, and I do think they were unique at the time, I think they've inspired lots of bands I really love now (like Black Country New Round).
Well it's an excellent album
This is going to be one of those rare times where I massively disagree with my my co-hort in my reviewing group here. Have a totally different view than you Paul...absolutely love this album from the first moment I heard it. One of the few good things to come out of my time at CMN/CEN magazine...hearing this album for the first time.
Это было неожиданно слишком хорошо.
So much to love!
Such a good album!
This is one of my absolute favorite albums and I can't really talk about it without sounding like an insufferable douchebag. If you want my thoughts (I'm sure you don't), you'll have to get them over drinks. Best track: Wake Up
Yeah, great album. Saw them live just before they broke in a small venue in Glasgow. A revelation.
Maybe this is just my bias for this type of music but it’s hard to find a flaw on this album. The connective tissue tracks are thematically relevant and the high points like Wake Up are extremely high. In the conversation for album of the century so far.
I’ve herd it once before and I like it but just a tad overrated for me but hey it’s a new day so I’ll try it with new ears… Also for the neighbourhood songs I am just gonna call them by whatever is in the brackets as I find the whole multi part idea stupid when the songs have no real musical flow and are completely separate works… The album opens with tunnels, one of the most enjoyable tracks of the album, perfect instrumentation for the album’s opener with the grand build up in tempo throughout truly an epic tune! Laika has a great chorus but the vocals on the verses are too muffled and static really for me. Une anee sans lumiere is a song that I appreciate for speaking in a different language ( well for the odd line or two at least) and feels like a nice mid side 1 break ( so I guess the neighbourhood thing does work). Power out is really explosive ( like a dark disco track) but it also has these playful bell sounds that make it really unique to be honest! 7 kettles is a nice slow song to end the whole dumb neighbourhood thing and this is the album’s worst track, well performed but mediocre. < note to self: well I guess the first two songs make sense as a part of “neighbourhood” but doing 3 and 4 is dumb> Crown of love is really soft and sweet great way to rebuild the album after 7 kettles; the dance bit at the end is odd but it’s just a great song to be honest. Wake up is the closest you would get to a full blown rocker on this album ( like it’s all heavy guitars until the last minute or so) and it’s one of the best songs on the album (especially when you give it time like this)! Haiti goes for a female vocalist swapping between English and french over a great rhythm. Not a favourite but I like it especially with the echoey voice. There are these sirens at the end of Haiti that flow perfectly into the penultimate track rebellion ( lies) this song is great like the album’s opener it builds up well as the song progresses but unlike this song this is a proper rocker. The album closes with in the backseat ( another song sung by the female vocalist), a track that really works when the electric guitars crash over her voice making a song that would’ve been just dull and slow into something incredible. Well, I guess I was a bit wrong ( I still think the band are overrated) but this was better than I remembered can’t not give this a 5 ( even if it’s quite a low one).
Fire
What a debut
I love this album, I love their voices, the sadness, the joy, the sound. I'm gonna go play it again.
Modern Classic. Wake Up is such a great song
I just want to buy everyone involved in making this album a pint. Its bloody beautiful.
It wasn't until Neon Bible took me by surprise when it was released a few years later that I finally got around to listening to this. I'm not sure what caused my resistance to Arcade Fire, I think it was that I thought that they would be another lame Radioheadesque mess of a band. I was very wrong. The music on here is so rich and deep. It has filmic quality where my mind images scenes from some unmade movie that this is the soundtrack of. I also love how it is so melancholic yet joyous at the same time
I love this band and I love this album.
The perfect debut. Words barely do it justice
This really holds up after 18 years. Euphoric at times, and the Neil Young like urgent fragility of Win's voice has never been deployed better since. Always a good medicine to thaw many a heart that's grown old and cynical.
A near-perfect indie rock album, and my favourite release from Arcade Fire. Everything hits on this record, and it feels like the band has way more experience than they currently do at this point in their careers. I really enjoy the moments throughout the album where strings and piano dominate. Great flow to the tracks throughout. Régine Chassagne's vocals on the final track are one of my favourite moments on this listen. Can't think of much to criticize on this one. Fave tracks: Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels), Rebellion (Lies), In The Backseat
A truly beautiful album. The incorporation of instruments beyond the typical rock 4-piece brings a lot of emotional depth and the lyrics cut just right all throughout. Also a very minor thing, but I just love it so much when songs mix into each other, shows that extra foresight was put into the planning of the whole thing. Definitely massively influential, this is a sound that every indie band since have been trying to achieve, with very few matching it's power. I personally prefer The Suburbs to this one, but I would still never turn down a listen. Fav Tracks: Neighbourhood #1, Crown of Love, Rebellion and In The Backseat
Funeral is a watershed indie rock album that shaped the genre for the next two decades. It incorporates elements of baroque and symphonic pop into contemporary indie rock to yield an uncommonly lush and melodic album. Lyrically, the album is ultimately hopeful at a very polarizing time in the wake of the invasion of Iraq
classic
With the benefit of the passage of time - this album stands the test of time - an excellent end to end album with no fat and great songs.
Fantastic album, always gets me
10/10/10
Listened
honestly skipped arcade fire. Funeral was like. really fucking good though.
Love this album. Alternative rock classic
Great. I quite enjoy one of their later albums, Everything Now, so it wasn't a huge surprise that I enjoyed this one. They seem to hew relatively close to the sound of the time, but I like their take on it.
Love this album another one of my all time favourites. Rebellion (lies) is one of my all time favourite songs.
Was leaning towards 4... but then 'Wake Up' started.
This was acc fire
So much nostalgia
Oo this album is so fragile and honest, it is beautiful, focusing on the things near us, in the neighbourhood, in the suburbs, telling stories of loss-of-innocence and coming to terms with the world. It is beautiful indie rock with symphonic influences, but also draws from various Latin traditions. I am in love with WIn Butler's vocal, and am on all fours over 'Wake Up' which manifests a beautiful anger and pain that ultimately dissolves into a cathartic sensation through dance. Maybe that sounds bizzare, but that really is how it feels! Brilliant album and thankfully not the only one by Arcade Fire at that!
Great indie-style vibe album, reminiscent of Cage The Elephant (perhaps they were influenced a lot by them?). I will listen to the album regularly from now on.
epic!
Had not listened to it for 15 years or so and liked it more at the time - but still good of course and one of those immediately recognizable albums, like The Bends or Siamese Dream. So will give it 5 star.
Love the sound of it. From the first bars of the piano in what sounds like a parish hall.
An album to die for
An absolute classic and what a debut. After dozens of listens I think The Suburbs might even be the better album, but this is superb.
EEEEEEEEE ANOTHER ONE I ADORE!!! Personal highlights include: - Tunnels (gorgeous opening track, makes me feel like I'm in a snowy cabin) - Power Out (particularly the bridge building to "IS IT A DREAM? IS IT A LIE?" and everything after that) - Crown of Love is maybe (maybe?) my favourite song on here, it's just so lovely and again the buildup is so good! - Wake Up (obviously) - In The Backseat (makes me Big Emotional and reminds me of being a little kid, well, in the backseat) I think I gravitate more towards the songs with big dramatic swelling instrumentals and vocals rather than the quieter and slower songs (though these are still ridiculously beautiful and I love them too)
What an album- some cracking songs and always hits me in the feels. Sooooo gooood!
Absolutely thoroughly enjoyed. No criticism.
Ah yes a classic from my early post college days.
Excellent debut album
So many good songs - very unique (or at least it was unique at the time).
This is an all time favourite and one of the most important albums in my teens. I haven't given this a listen in a long time but it still holds up. It doesn't give me the same emotional listen like in the past but all the songs hold up and are super fun. Good songwriting on here and nice arrangements, with a good lyrical theme that goes through the album. Still love it.
Staple indie from my formative years. Cue Schmidt's finger snaps: "Let's start an Arcade Fire"
Brilliant album Not sure how to criticise this beyond saying I prefer Neon Bible, which doesn't seem fair. So 5 stars it is (to keep Jack happy)
This was one of the most surprising albums to listen to, despite being a good album, i never expected to hit the feels like this. In a crisp 48 min run time which is much shorter than most other albums I have listened to, they (Arcade Fire) have discussed many ideas from the present such as childhood loss, wanting to run away and other feelings that would be commonplace now in 2021. Companied with strong instrumentation that changes from down and slow to rebellious and upbeat to even using the French language this album stuck out in all the right ways
Love this album. A bit late to the party but better late than never
4.5
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Tunnels, Laika, Power out, Crown of love, Wake up, Haiti, Rebellion
I feel like I always think these guys are better than they really are. Like, when I saw this album I thought \"oh yeah, it's really good\" and then I listened to it and thought \"is it?\" And I know I've done that on this album and other Arcade Fire albums on previous listens. So, I tried to put the music critics' constant fawning out of my mind and evaluate for myself. Tunnels holds up - simple baseline instruments (piano, xylophone?) that mix well with the guitars and drums, thoughtful lyrics, and Win Butler's desperation-style vocals. And it's that combination that works well on multiple tracks (Une Annee sans Lumiere, Kettles - really beautiful). It also sometimes fails (Laika - Butler and strings too whiny, In the Backseat - Regine Chassagne's vocals are hit or miss). But there are also a series of songs that take those previous good things and then go further by adding in an edgy, high energy, more rock feel. Power Out and Wake Up are good examples. The best example is Rebellion - it will probably always stay in my top 20 alternative rock songs (the opening bass line, then the piano, then the rest of the instruments - love it). I don't know where to put Arcade Fire in terms of influencing the indie rock revival/explosion of the 2000's (that is still going strong today) but this album is certainly in the middle of all of it. And so after some focused listens, yeah it's really, really good.
A triumphant moment for music. Music fans may have decided that such a sound is dated and that every era has a sound and that you can't relate to things from out of your time. But really I reject that. Funeral is one of the most emotional and relatable stories of adolescent uncertainty ever crafted, with all of life's pure unrestrained rebellion, despair, and the in between. They are a band with fucking violinists and horn players but at the end of the day it's music recorded with a fidelity that frankly anyone could acquire with simple homely writing. Regine and Winn Butler's voice breaking the limits of the mix on tracks such as Neighborhood #1 and In the Backseat is not something to be frowned upon. They're astounding moments of incredibly talented individuals screaming into the void at the loss of the light of their parent's and community's guidance. Yet through this expression of pain, Funeral becomes an almost communal event which is what I think truly makes Funeral the epitome of what everyone loves or hates about the genre. The album has a few weaker spots that I can easily note but that would take away from the sentiment I want to express. Funeral is one of the most loveable albums I have and ever will meet and I love returning to it every time.
When i first heard this, i loved it an wasn't sure why... definitely not a conventional alt rock album, but it's creativity and energy were easy to enjoy. Album still holds up... pretty incredible from start to finish.
Loved it. Could only listen to one track, though. What happened? Wanted to listen to more. Sad.
Real fun, one of my favourites actually. A mix of slightly left field music and lyrics
I always forget how much I like this band and how great their first 3 albums are (Reflektor is really good, but the first 3 are perfect). This album definitely deserves to be on a list of best debut albums of all time.
Love this album. Always have, always will.
Mad album
Neighbourhood #3 (lieb das Xylophon) Haiti
I like the range of sound and the lyrics felt personal and sad.
Arcade Fire's first album, 2004. The album was given its title because several band members had recently lost members of their families. Despite indie rock is not my favourite genre of music I liked the sound and atmosphere of this album a lot!
Arcade 🔥
Already liked it before, so pretty biased. Power Out, Wake Up – BANGERS.
Loved it since I first heard it.
This album was important to me when it came out and and I still really like it today, it's part "I like it" and part "i'm a homer" but otherwise it's hard to explain it other than by saying I love pretty much everything about it. It's a shame that the legacy of this album is a bunch of shitty bands trying to recreate this sound for a decade and an original band I just don't care about whatsoever outside of this lp
really good comic book reading album. Will probably look it up later to read to Might create a jurassic park to this album
4.7 + One of several great AF albums but arguably their masterpiece. Set around themes of suburban life, isolation and rebirth. A satisfying arc of songs that grabs you from the beginning and leads you on a journey. So many standout tracks.
On of my favorite albums of all time.
Really enjoyed this when it came out. Wake Up is one of my favorite songs.
CLASSIC
dripping with passion
Incredible album. Not sure if this is my favorite Arcade Fire, but it's so good. I think I have more of a fondness for Neon Bible, since that is the album that really got me into Arcade Fire, but I'd have to listen through all of them again to pick a favorite.
I like it. It has been good.
been thinking about them loads lately. good timing.
Great album this. Crown of love and wake up back to back is amazing
A work of art
One of best debut albums ever!

One of my all time favourites
Aquest àlbum és un vell conegut. L'he escoltat infinitat de cops, i recuperar-lo avui segueix produint molt bones sensacions.
One of my all time favorites.
Lived it
Love it.
Had a "soundtrack to life" feel to it. Great driving/ background music.
It’s not all five star but the good songs are fucking classic so they really bring that average up
Gotta be 5 stars
What a great album. I have a bit of a new found appreciation for this band. My top 3 are: Neighborhood #3 (Power out), Wake Up, Crown of love.
Great to listen to this again.
Still holds up, even after every other band ripped off this sound. Glorious and epic!
Interesante. Nunca me puse atención a esta banda
i liked it quite a lot, would listen to again
The drama!!! Wasn’t bad though and kind of grew on me the more I listened
In the initial songs I liked the sound but not the lyrics. Towards the end I actually really enjoyed it and have saved it to my new album discovery playlist. Might look into more of their work.
Quite fun and tbh a great emotional and lush ride while being vibey. 7-8
Some rough edges near the beginning, but some beautiful tracks, nice vocals and instrumentation. saved 7/10 initially. see my full notebook review.
Really good. Fuck you, Win Butler.
4/5
Not a single song on here is a miss. Just really consistent, great music Favorite Songs: Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), Neighborhood #3 (Power Out), Wake Up
General Note: These lyrics mostly go over my head. Especially the Neighborhood songs. Arcade Fire uses quite a variety of instruments. Each is played with intend, painting a picture that I do not quite get. They are quite proficient in the tug of war between tension and release and like to explore varied instrumentation while staying true to their core "sound". In general, this album is full of sad songs. But there are always hints and glimpses of hope and redemption to be found. The album felt a tad too long at times. It's also not exactly my kind of music. But it is a beautifully crafted and has a story to tell. Do I fully "get" that story? No. But there is enough here to make this a good album. Especially the last song made me feel something and isn't that what music like this is about? In summary, would I listen to this again? No. Do I appreciate the artistry behind it? Yeah, sure. Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels): The song invokes the feelings of a childhood romance. Singer sounds a bit whiny. The distortion on the guitar gets a bit jarring on the right ear at times. The buildup and release and around 1:50 was great. Song drags on too long. At around 3min mark the song could be over. Neighborhood #2 (Laika): Like the peppy start. The accordion invokes images of dingy french city streets. The kids shouting in the second go around of the refrain is a bit weird. I do NOT get these lyrics. <- On second read, probably something about a child being abandoned by/abandoning their family? Une Annee Sans Lumiere: Sommery feel. Like the female accentuation in the background, supporting the main artist. The long break at "There's something ... there." was great. The sudden shredding was unexpected and turned what sounded like a classic indie song into something more akin to a skate song. The high intensity was fun. Neighborhood #3 (Power Out): Starts really intense. Feels oppressive and dark at first, and then becomes weirdly uplifting again once the lyrics start. Again with the "twinkling" sounds. Lyrics also support the "winter-y" theme again. Repeated "Whats the plan" combined with the erratic strings sounds like a panic attack in the making. Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles): Weird atmosphere with the distortion sounds wandering from left to right and back again. I don't really know what's going on with the lyrics. The picture it paints is akin to one of those "magic eye 3d pictures", only I can't seem to get my eyes cross-eyed enough to see the true image past the flames. Crown of Live: A disturbing waltz that makes you sway from side to side involuntarily. Feels like the dramatic villain song of an abusive man trying to redeem himself and reclaim what he lost. The sudden swap to Disco-style bass and strings caught me by surprise and actually made me say "what the f***" out loud. Not in a bad way, that part was actually really hype and felt "redeeming". Wake up: Really rocky beginning. Feels like a rock ballad. Lyrics seem to describe the regret of a childhood unspent, leaving the singer regretful and uttering this warning. The return of the sad synth on the left side brings a feeling of cold melancholy to parts of the song, supporting the themes of regret. Arcade seems to like building expectancy in the first 2/3ds of their songs before using their last 1/3 of the song to just do something completely different to support the topic of their song. Haiti: Instruments and sound effects immediately give island vibes. Unexpected to hear someone else be the main singer for once. Song was a bit annoying to listen to in parts. Especially the repeated high-pitched steel drums. Actually had to turn the volume down a bit for this one. Rebellion (Lies): The seamless transition from Haiti to Rebellion was amazing. Really well done. In general a really good song. I'm not entirely sure about the lyrics. Maybe something about looking away/hiding away from injustice? Haiti seems about losing your home. Maybe this is driving the point home that you should do everything you can to stand up to oppressors so that you may not one day see everything you knew lost. In The Backseat: Feels like the ending song to a sad tv show. The slow parts really signify the sadness that follows losing and longing for ones innocence. I like how powerful they made the parts where the singer strides towards adulthood sound. There is something hopeful and sad about having to pick yourself up after a loss. It made me feel something, especially with the long silence at the end.
A bit pretentious, but I like it. Need another listen. Rating:8/10 Favorite Song: Tunnels, Power Out
A bit insipid. Not unpleasant just there in the back ground. If someone put this on you wouldnt be annoyed but you woukdnt feel moved I was a bit hard on the album having listened through. Some moving songs.
This was a big deal for me around 2004 and 2005. The sexual misconduct allegations against Win Butler have eaten away at the album's charm more than the years that have passed.
I guess I like arcade fire now???
3,7 Highlights: Crown of Love, Rebellion (Lies)
I really liked this one. It felt cohesive and adventurous with getting too outlandish. Liked the general atmosphere of it.
Yes
weawwy fweakin good awbum...
fave song: Neighborhood #2 (Laika)
An indie's indie album. This is perhaps the ur-indie album and, for that reason, at least has historical value. Does it hold up for inclusion on this list? Absolutely. Certainly better than much of the crap we've had to endure on this list (ABBA and ELO, I am looking at you). I personally like some indie albums more than this (i.e., something like Pavement if you consider these 2 bands historically comparable). Still, well-worth inclusion here. 4 "more of these, less of those" stars.
I’m a fan of the band. It’s not my absolute favourite of their albums but it’s still pretty good.
I've loved this album from start to finish since first I heard it.
The longer you listen to it, the better it gets.
A bit dreary. That's the first impression. Then I listened again, and paid more attention to the lyrics, and about twenty seconds into Wake Up I started sobbing. I don't even know why. It hurt. This band spawned countless other bands trying to chase the trend they set so it's reasonable that if you grew up during that time you either find the sound irritating and grating or nostalgic. For me, the needle flickers left and right, but I think this album falls right on "great." There's a lot of love and a lot of pain packed into this one.
Took a second listen but I really enjoyed this in the end. Best tracks Wake Up and In The Backseat
Some of the only good rock music (or any music) from that era.
I had never heard of or heard this band before…but I really liked it. It was just different, but in a good way. I will want to listen to this one again.
Pretty darn good
Hmm I kinda want to give this a 5 but for now I’ll give it a 4. I guess we’ll just have to adjust 🤗🤷♂️
Great to hear this again, always liked it but I think it's not quite stood the test of time, the songs didn't resonate as they once did. This is true of other Arcade Fire albums I've also listened too after a gap. But still enjoyed it
It lacked something but idrk what. Personally i liked a few of the tracks quite a lot, favourite one being: “Crown of love”. Generous 4
Absolutely amazing
Some of the finest indie music there's been. A lot of nostalgia listening to this
Can see why this is one of those standout early 00’s Indie names, can be both mellow and epic and a good chunk of the tracks flow into each other well, also my name was dropped heavily in the second track so bonus points. This is damn close to a 5, but i’m strict with them as i don’t adore every track here. Standouts are Laika, Power Out, Crown of Love, Haiti and Rebellion.
Sweet and original! Loved revisiting! Nearly great! Not enough memorable songs.
Such a great album. Sad think how much terrible folk pop crap we got that was likely directly inspired by this album. 4.5/5
Really enjoyed this one, lot of different ideas going on, very expansive in terms of the sound, would happily listen again
Too bad what happened to this band. This album is a banger. Except for one song.
Arcade Fire blijft goed.
overall good with a couple of all-timers 4.5
it reminds me of welcome to the black parade in terms of music and themes which is an album I like, so I guess I like this album too.
I feel bad for not giving this 5 stars since I LOVE Arcade Fire but in no way is this there best album, so. Justice for The Suburbs.
A really good record. Is it a masterpiece? Most likely not. Do the people who treat it like one tend to be a bit annoying? Most likely yes.
Great album and crazy to think this was their debut. I’ve listened to it a few times now and for whatever reason it doesn’t quite resonate with me as much as I thought it would. I’d give it 4.5 stars, though as every track is worth listening to.
Nostalgic
its decent mad classical
Solid still
It’s hard to deal with stuff like this, it’s where the question of separating the art from the artist comes in. I’m personally in favor, and it’s stuff like this that shows why. This is just a really really solid indie album, I think it’s got some really strong spots. But at the same time it feels weird to listen to cause of how weird the dude is. But it’s still like an essential, it’s earned its place no doubt. Favorites: Une année sans lumière, Crown of Love, Haiti
While I love this album, I'm not sure I can give it a 5. It captured my attention when it was new, but it no longer evokes as much feeling for me. (Plus, I like their Suburbs album a lurks but more.)
Es una mezcla de Smashing Pumpkins con The Killers, es interesante.
OBSESSED with this in middle school.
I disliked this album at first , then I grew to like it, then it annoyed me, looking back it’s a decent album
Tremendo albummm, locura.
Love Crown of Love and Wake Up are long time favorites of mine. Came across Wake up in the Where the wild things are trailer years ago, I think i listened to the album back then? But didnt really latch in to much other than those two songs. Same feelings from listening to it again today. Those two songs drag it up to a 4 for me though. 7.5/10
Good indie sounds. Revisit maybe 2-3 songs.
Can't believe it has been 20+ years. I still think of Arcade Fire as a cool and modern band to listen to. Neighborhood #3, Wake Up, and Rebellion (Lies) are the popular tracks, with the latter being my favorite. I'm not able to analyze music or write intelligently about it, but the songs build up in a unique way. The sound is iconic of early 2000's indie. Great music for pumping yourself up against the world. Not sure it's for me anymore.
This Album is soo good. while listening to it I felt like late spring/early summer time and that's my favorite time of the year.
Really engaging effort…leveled up my expectations
I don’t allow myself to listen to the music i used to love by men that were later discovered to be abusers but man i used to love this band
very pretty album, definitely really emotive but didn't keep me the most engaged or interested
We all like this one.
Love Arcade Fire despite the win butler induced eye rolls
On paper, not my jam but this is such a great distillation of mid-aughts indie
Fun, epic, driving through a tunnel, sun, indie, nostalgic, alive
favorite track: neighborhood #2 laika very cool indie rock feeling
I’ve heard this before. I haven’t heard it in a long time but I’ve heard their stuff from the past decade that wasn’t very good, so it’s a good time for a revisit. This is a very mid-00s indie rock album. I’m recognizing a lot of these songs from last time I heard this or being played at parties, and the rest are sounding a lot like devotchka or Sufjan Stevens or other orchestral acts from the time. And this is a good thing, I liked those acts at the time and still listen to them regularly. This is feeling extremely nostalgic for me even though I don’t really know these songs. All in all a well organized album with some pretty great songs. Il have to revisit more of their stuff.
Mención honorable a “In the backseat” y “Power out”
One of the ones I’m very familiar with. They were such a great band, a shame they sort of teetered off. Went from releasing great records to releasing very average records with some great songs. Looking at you Reflektor. I’d happily argue that Suburbs is their best, but this is pretty close! 4.5
Probably my favourite of the Arcade Fires so far. I would argue there might be a bit too much of them on the list. Crown of Love, and Neighborhood 1 (Tunnels) were my favourite tracks. Dreamy, sincere indie rock. Not nearly as deep as it pretends to be. 3.5.
Got a very distinctive sound haven't they. It's good, exactly what I expect from them. Suburbs is still the best one we've had, but this was very good too. No real complaints 4
Oh my god. I played this so much when it came out, and I can't believe I'd almost forgotten it existed. This album is so powerful, so raw, and always has me in tears.
It's good. I think it's genre defining of a genre I don't really like all that much. Certainly is good though
good album good vibes
Tip debut
Love the vibes, instrumentation is very fun and very them.
I know this album well from a different era in my past and it brings back memories of a strange time. It’s such an emotionally wrought album in itself. It’s not the sort of thing I listen to now. And I never listened to any other Arcade Fire album after this. Really, I should give it a five because it’s so consistently itself …if that makes sense. But it feels somehow alien to me. I think a 4 is how I feel about it.
Another AF album I slept on
I disagree with the other bulk of reviews it seems. This is some solid indie rock. Sure, everyone copied them, but sometimes the wheel is pretty solid.
Loved it! Enjoyable album!
Disregarding the mess that 2025 Arcade Fire have become, this is a phenomenal debut.
dentro de este genero que no me gusta porque se me hace muy empalagoso, este album fue lo mejor que salio 7/10
I knew the name more than I thought i knew their genre evidentally. Good music, easy to think over for background music. 4
Olipa erinomainen albumi. Poikkeukselliset instrumentit ovat ehkä tämän bändin ja albumin juttu. Toki on hyviä biisejäkin. Mielenkiintoinen, pitää otteessaan vaikka onkin rauhallinen meno. Positiivinen yllätys. 4/5
wake up???? woooooooo rebellion???? double woooooo
8/10 Best songs: Neighborhood #2 (Laika), Neighborhood #3 (Power Out), Wake Up, Rebellion (Lies) My first album in this project was Arcade Fire, and now, over 120 albums later, I'm getting another one of their albums. I find this rather interesting. Anyways, I have been listening to various songs by Arcade Fire for decades now. When they're good, they're very, very good; but sometimes the songs just fall into a mire of pretention and dull repetition, and that gets old fast. This album is much the same - some absolute bops (there's a reason Wake Up has been on my playlists for over 20 years now), some incredibly average songs. Overall quite good though.
9/10 classic
3.5 haven't been the biggest fan of indie pop and rock since I was like 13 but I like a few songs on this album so I'll be generous and give it a 4. No songs particularly stuck out to me though. Issue with a lot of indie music is that it all sorta sounds the same. Best songs were probably Rebellion and Laika.
Um lindo funeral.
Not as good as when I first listened to it when I was 14, but what is?
This is a very good album and I really enjoyed it especially the mixing of indie with lush orchestration and was a treat to listen to. It was very close to getting top marks but there are 2 songs on it that are not as good as the rest of the album and as such did affect my enjoyment as a whole.
Pre listening: The first album generator gives me that I don't only know well but also own physical copy of. But do I love it, I don't know. Unlike many reviewers here I didn't grow up with it. Back in 2004 I was listening to punk and following years were years of nu-metal. I got familiar with their music some 10 years later and my first album was Reflector. But I appreciate Funeral for what it is. Plus I have stupid connection with the second track as am Alexander, older brother and come from the same place as original Laika.
Great album 4.2
I thought this was a really nice album even tho I found it as white noice and often get distracted by what I was doing at that moment, my favorite was crown of love
Un disco muy bueno por ser el primero de la banda 8.50/10
A really good album some really good songs, songs that I would listen to again just not enough bangers to get 5 stars
4/5
8 / 10
throwback!
I liked this one of course. My expectations were incredibly high, and sadly i was not blown away, but it is as good as their other entries in the book. Not a fan of the mix, but learning how it was recorded, I can see why it sounds like this. Love it's influence, and i had lots of fun with it. Might have to pick it up on vinyl later. Solid 4
Emotional and Nostalgic. Beautiful and Overcast. Energetic and Somber. 8:42pm 3/29/2026 XM
4.3
lots of nostalgia associated with this album, great opening terrific finish. compared to all of my favourite albums probably gets a 3.7 out of 5
Wake up Rebellion (lies) Neighborhood #3 (power out) Neighborhood #1 (tunnels) Haiti Neighborhood #2 (laika)
Refreshingly different to other 2000s bands here 4*
“They say a watched pot won't ever boil Well I closed my eyes and nothin' changed Just some water getting hotter in the flames” A lyricist he is not, but Rapist…. Yep Music is lovely still, each songs flows into the next and it’s whimsical. Im still a sucker for this album. I wish the band would carry on with out their lead, Win Butler. Rot in hell Win.
Listened to this and totally forgot it was on our list. Fantastic album that put arcade fire on the map. I don’t think it’s as tuneful as almost anything else they do but the vibe is great.
Very, very good album.
