Her breakthrough album. Some nice jagged songs
Bom demais
So good I often say first albums have the “Alanis Morissette” effect, where the album is great, but subsequent albums aren’t as good. Anyway, fun 90s throwback def worth hearing at least once

Really enjoyable, fun album! I'd listen again merrily. :)
Fun :)
Canadian angsty classic
i was faded in a day, i was blinded by storm, i wish i was a beautiful princess in a day in a week in a year in a life in a dream
My angrier friends loved this when we were in middle school, even if they didn't yet understand why.
I find it impossible to separate this from the age I was when it was everywhere. I didn't understand a good chunk of it but it made the world seem very big, like everyone was living their fullest lives. Some of the vocals are kinda conventional annoying oversinging, but still always with an undercurrent of completely feral thing that makes her iconic. This is a weird one to rate. I do like that other people completely enjoy it. I won't ever listen to it on purpose, and I find it funny rather than enjoyable, & what's awesome about it serves to make it more funny. music: oughta know it. (⌐■_■)
Usually, as a Canadian, it’s kind of painful to go back to a classic piece of Canadian media and listen to it/watch it/experience it critically. Because it makes you reckon with the fact that, removed from nostalgia and over-saturation, the piece of media almost always sucks. Expected that here, didn’t get it. This is actually cool and good, and not just curved against Canadian stuff either. For real cool!
A fantastic debut from a unique singer/songwriter.
Love this album and I have even more of an appreciation for it now that I've seen her live!
Never listened to this before but definitely heard of it. There's some real bangers in here, even if it is a bit dated.
Man, it was fun to see this one pop up, 'cuz I'd heard it for the first time only a month ago—ironic, don'tcha think? Anyway, I think it's a pretty darn enjoyable listen. I'm not 100% that any of the album cuts hit as hard as "You Oughta Know" or "Ironic" (except the chorus of "You Learn"; I fell in love with it the first time I heard it), but it's not like they're that far away, all things considered. And that moment when it cuts to silence on the opening track—man, I gotta kick out of it. So, yeah. In total, I just can't hear any reason why I wouldn't rate it a 4 at minimum. And that's not just because I'm Canadian and needa rep my people, no.
'tis a banger full of bangers. 4/5
Classic. 4/5
Classic album. It's 30 years later and I still know a bunch of these songs. Maybe nostalgia is getting the best of me with this rating, but isn't it iconic?
Good Album with multiple hits.
Glad to have finally given it a proper listen! A few songs I did recognize, good stuff!
Some absolute classics on here, not sure I would recommend listening at 5 am though.
Great album. I have never listened to it in full before now. Look at the run time of nearly 1 hour and thought it might drag but it did not. Great pace all the way through and it's sprinkled with songs I recognise and the unheard ones I loved also
So beautiful. However, I don't understand all the explicit lyrics.
So many hits on one album. You oughta know has so much emotion and passion.
Heard it before. Still holds up
I was surprised by how many of these songs I recognized probably from Canadian radio when I was little. Favourites: you oughta know, hand in my pocket, forgiven, you learn, head over feet, ironic. Not sure why there was a mega long pause in the middle of you oughta know Jimmy the saint blend that was weird. 4/5
Greatest breakup album of all time? I really liked this, but I think I it would take another listen with some real studying of the lyrics to push to a five. Sitting pretty though with some killer hits, Ironic, Head Over Feet, You Oughta Know, and Hands in my Pocket.
Overall I really enjoyed this one. I loved the alternative rock sound added with the wonderful vocals. I do think some songs did blend together after some point but that happens for a lot of albums.
Great album
Giving this a 4 just because this was Alanis Morissette's breakout album. So many hits including "Hand in my Pocket" and "Ironic". Even the non-hits, like "Mary Jane" are worthy.
I wouldn't choose to listen to this album, but I knew all the songs. 4/5
So many bangers! A few of these tracks are almost indistinguishable. Maybe that speaks to just how unique a sound Alanis has on the album.
As a millennial Canadian, I've always been aware of Alanis Morissette and heard her songs on the radio, but I never bought or listened through any of her albums. This one is such a banger! Every time a familiar track came on, I thought, "Wait this one's on here too??" I especially loved her voice and delivery; Alanis sounds so confident and fully-formed here.
This album is the alt-rock album by a female artist of the 90's. "Jagged Little Pill," the third studio album by Canadian singer Alanis Morissette, exploded into the worldwide stage. The hit single "You Oughta Know," in collaboration with guitarist Dave Navarro and bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, was a syndicated, commercial success. This album has a number of great and well-known singles.
I didn't realize so many singles were on this album! I know Alanis Morissette's vocal style has been made fun of over the years, but it's really engaging within the context of the album as a series of emotional songs. "Forgiven" is a new favorite production wise, although on this song I didn't really care for the lyrics. "Mary Jane" and "Not the Doctor" were also a bit too ambiguous for me to follow. It's an impressively produced album, with lots of thoughtful and provoking lyrics, although I'm not sure it's something I'd want to listen to all the time .
This was better than I expected. I'm tired of about half of the hits here but I can still appreciate them for what they are and the deeper cuts are pretty good too. A nice surprise.
A classic from my generation. Not a bad album.
Enjoyed this more than I would have thought. And not just because I'm predisposed to enjoy anything that sounds like 90s, but I found Alanis interesting, authentic, charismatic. 3.5
It was a lot poppyer than I remember. Still a classic album with a ton of great songs. Amazing that she was able to write like that at such a young age. Excellent album.
She lowkey has a pretty gritty voice. It's cool but it tires after a while. I only knew Ironic and ig You Oughta Know before. The guitar work is pretty cool. Enjoyed it better than Deja Vu which I reviewed recently.
I like the emotion in her voice. Some songs are good but some are forgettable enough.
Great album with a very high concentration of good songs, although IMO the singles have those good songs pretty well covered with 6/13 tracks getting significant radio play. Her energy and bile are perfectly paired with humor and it all fits the early 90's zeitgeist so well.
4.5
This one is a classic, era defining album for me. One of the best albums to come out of the 90s and it is still relevant to this day.
So many hits on this album and Alanis really lays it all out. I enjoyed way more than I expected
Loved it
Incredible angsty album. All that you could ever want was in it. Never purposefully listened to Alanis morissette. But I will now.
Owned this album - discovered Forgiven this listen….
Highly personal but relatable LP from the perspective of a young person tackling the world on their own. Morissette's voice takes some... adjustment, perhaps, to get used to - there is some wobble, some wax, and the tone is inconsistent between songs. The instrumentation works, but all sounds kinda "generic 90s". Still, the project is solid on content, if not slightly too long. Worth a listen.
Love 'Ironic', a pleasant listen. Ought to know is also a song that is really good. No real bad song
Un álbum que escuché hasta el cansancio en su época. Algunas canciones no han envejecido bien y otras son timeless hits indiscutibles.
classic
Man six or seven charting songs on this album. Quite an accomplishment. I have always dug Alanis, though listening to all these back to back made me realize how much of her lyrics she just crams in without regard to cadence
Every song on this album is a monster. Alanis never topped it. But has any singer songwriter ever topped it?
Our first Alanis Morrisette album means I’ve gotta share the links to the first two things that come to mind when I think about her and this album. Alanis is Canadian and has issues: https://youtu.be/XqcemLA4f9g?si=0B5me3_u0ry5bq58 The best You Oughta Know cover: https://youtu.be/nixsUgSDdjw?si=1X94Js7x6nKa0IV2 We all know it at this point and it’s no secret, but I still can’t get over You Oughta Know being one of the greatest breakup/fuck you songs of all time and it’s about Uncle Joey from Full House. Absolutely wild. 90s alternative rock hits me right in the nostalgia more than almost any other genre, and Jagged Little Pill has five iconic songs from the decade. Hard to deny the relevance and importance. The vocals on some of the lesser-known songs does drag a little bit, but hey, that’s just Alanis being Alanis. Part of me feels like this should be a five, but I think it’s solidly in the four range.
Morissette at her best. Fantastic voice, nice mix of upbeat and melodic songs. Can’t fault this album!
Nice pop album, little bland. Instruments are great but mix is focused on vocals so hard to hear the band.
Definitely an album of the mid 90's
When this came out, you couldn't escape it. Alanis was on the radio constantly, there were at least 5 singles off this album in heavy rotation. "You're oughtta know" was huge, angry, and was always playing somewhere. The other songs weren't as big, "ironic" still gets mentioned. "You're learn" , "hand in my pocket", and "head over feet" were other hits off this album. It is the epitome of mid-90s angsty rock.
i enjoyed this album but concede that alanis' voice is kinda grating and some of the slower ballady songs were a real snoozefest. however, the more rockin' tracks, particularly those with alanis spitting venom as only a jilted ex-lover could, really pack a punch. everything about this album, from the music and lyrics to the production and album art just SCREAM 90s, and i have a bit of a soft spot for that era/aesthetic. this is absolutely not for everyone but it deserves its place in the list. favorites: all i really want, you oughta know, hand in my pocket, forgiven, head over feet, ironic
8/10 I love this album. Alanis sings with such passion and the songs are hooky and engaging. a good listen all around. 4/26/2024
This one brings me back. It was one of my favorite albums back in the day. Honestly it still holds up pretty well. Her voice gets a bit whiny in places, but overall it's very good. The instrumentation is solid as well - full in places and understated where it needs to be. I don't know any of her other material but this album is still as good as I remember when it was current.
Josiah - 3/5 Elen - 4/5
I mean, you cannot have been a college-aged woman in 1995 and not love this album. We all loved it. It’s a classic. Musical hooks, edgy lyrics, strong vocals. I don’t know what it would sound like to someone hearing it for the first time today, but for me, it still slaps. 4.3
Alanis rocks!
One of my wife's favourtites. It has some classic tracks
Really felt like the 2000s with the mixing of alternative rock sounds with technopop sounds.
It’s rare that I pick up Jagged Little Pill, but every time I do, the power and songwriting blows me away. It contains some of the greatest 90’s rock tracks available and while a few aspects may sound dated almost 30 years later it takes very little from the overall experience. What narrowly keeps this from being a 5 is the book’s inclusion of the CD and not the vinyl version, which means that we end on a worse version of “You Oughta Know”, a meaningless a cappella sequence and a runtime of almost an hour. So I’ll end with my tip of the week: Stick to the perfect vinyl version.
This album is simultaneously a staple of the 90s and a timeless album. Great songwriting, great musicality, and the edge that will keep you coming back after a heartbreak. Not every song is as equally strong as the standouts.
Alanis siendo alanis
Fresh, yet epic and resisting the tides of time. So many hits in one delivery seems unfair for the future, but that’s what happens when creativity cannot be contained. It will sound in radios for a long, long time…
It loses momentum a little in the second half, but the opening five songs is an almost perfect run, full of infectious 90’s energy
Good old Classic "Rock" Songs. ... Long time ago.... Still nice to hear
I'm just a girl
This album has aged really really well. The rawness and vulnerability Alanis brought to the songs still feels fresh and the production feels really creative and savvy. So iconically 90’s! Only reason I wouldn’t give it 5 stars (…I’d go 4.5) is that the general tone gets a bit stale across a full album runtime for me, but almost every song is brilliant and thoughtful… absolutely worth a deep listen.
I forgo how many super great songs there were on this album.
One thing I have never understood about this album is how/why the decision was made to start off an album with so many great songs with possibly the worst song on the entire album. "All I Really Want" is maximum Alanis and that's not always a good thing. It's a grating song. There are five really big hits on "Jagged Little Pill" and inspired a generation of girls who liked to write songs with an edge. This is an important album and even some of the songs that are not hits are really good. "Right Through You" and "Mary Jane" are worth a listen as well. This album does feel very 90's and that's a good thing in some ways and bad in others. If Sheryl Crow was the 90's female artist who insisted on being included in the discussion of 90's rock, then Alanis was the 90's female artist who was going to force her way into the discussion and point out it should have happened sooner. Also, Olivia Rodrigo seems to have based a lot of her voice affectation and phrasing off "Ironic." Listening to the song now it is very obvious the influence that song had on her.
This album is great. It’s such a time capsule of the 90s. Some serious 90s bangers along with some slower songs. It’s unconventional pop and I grew up singing a lot of these songs in the car with my parents. The mixing and production sounds so 90s which I can’t quite pinpoint what that sounds like but I can recognize it right away.
Super fun album. I hate saying albums feel "nostalgic" because when it came out, it wasn't meant to feel nostalgic. However, this album is so baked into the sound of the 90s, its almost impossible to avoid. This is 90s alt rock at its finest. She has such a great voice, really cool lyrics and I love how she just goes there with every song. The harmonicas, acoustic and electric guitars, its all on point.
I kept going back and forth on the album. On the one hand it had a lot of catchy songs and almost every one was played on the radio. Bbbbbuuuuuuttttt I just can’t get over how here voice sounds. Bbbbbuuuuuttttt then I really like her theme of breaking up. Since the musicians are also pretty good I will up it by one.
Insane how many of these songs have survived the 30 years between release and today. Still quite relevant! Favorite tune is You Oughta Know. My girlfriend and I love to make fun of the song Hand in my Pocket. She always changes the lyrics to something more ridiculous like \"'Cause I've got one hand in my pocket And the other one is... committing tax fraud\" its so cheesy, I love her. Album is 4/5
Angst-ridden to the core but packed with excellent tunes. Sold a gazillion copies, apparently.
I don't think that I have really listened to this since the 90s. It really hit at just a perfect time. I feel like if it comes out a year or two earlier or later it doesn't become as big as it did. It has the whole gamut of emotions, harsh and soft, calm and frenetic, and everything in between. And it has Flea on bass for a song.
I like Alanis. Her voice really sells it in some songs and is a little out of place in others. I wish I could put my finger on what that difference is. Anyway, 5 stars, would give head in a theater.
Passions of youth carry this album to greatness. Sounds dated, because it is, but it transcends the mid-90s artifacts that threaten to drown it.
LOVEEED this album back in 2020. On my first full listen since like... 2021 (?), I don't know if I love it that much. "All I Really Want", "You Oughta Know", "Hand in My Pocket", "Ironic" and "You Learn" are all standouts for me, truly amazing songs. I don't know about the rest. Overall still a great album, still stands the test of time.
Devin’s gonna hate it!
Cracking good song
Alanis at her best
Right back to the 90s lol. Live and learn, head over feet, all I really want and you oughtta know are all bangers. The rest feels a bit like filler to me. And I’ve never really liked ironic lol
Passion and lyrics good; music ok 3.5
Didn't realize how many songs I knew
This is a pretty decent pop-rock album. It's kind of dated (some tracks more than others, You Learn is terrible from this point of view), it's clearly pop music, but it is saved by the intensity of Morissette's voice and grit. I love the angry Alanis, the mellow one not so much. Thankfully she's more angry than mellow!
I have never thought about listening to this album but I am glad i did. There were plenty of songs I have not heard and really enjoyed like Mary Jane, All I really want and right through you. No filler. This sounds like the 90s. Favourite song: All the classics we already know and Mary Jane. Least favourite song: All good tunes! Album artwork: Really recognisable cover
This album was revolutionary for its time, and the raw emotion still comes through.
I've never been the biggest fan of Morissette's vocals. However, once you get used to them, her songs are pretty good — fun to sing along to at least… Lyrics are solid, if a little edgy at times. For some reason she includes unpolished harmonica in a few tracks, which was odd, but otherwise the production is decent from a ‘90s point of view. Could use a bit more diversity between songs though.
Bunch of great songs on here. Lyrics wilder than I realized
Excellent album that seems to age well. A few song are a little lack-luster, but the majority pretty much knock it out of the park.
All-timer for my generation
I don’t really care for her voice, but I was pleasantly surprised by this album and I knew more songs that I thought I did Top tracks: You Outta Know, Hand In My Pocket, You Learn
Groovy! Fun
This one brings me back. These songs were in heavy rotation back in the day and were enjoyable enough although became a bit overplayed. I haven't listened to this in many years, so coming back to it felt fresh again. Alanis is raw and unfiltered and tells it like it is, which is why the lyrics were appealing to so many. She wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind. Say what you will, but I like it.
My dad listened to this a lot after divorcing my mom... takes me back.
I own this one, and like it a lot. It seems people either love or hate this album. My wife hates it, and is no fan of Alanis. What’s funny is that she once took our 15 year old daughter to an Avril Lavigne concert, and Morissette was the opening act. Isn’t it ironic?
Bitch is talented, but not exactly my taste.
Fun but gets a bit tiring near the end
I loved this album when I was younger (9 or so) - my older sister would play the tape on her sound system in her room. It hits different now that I’m a woman in my late 30s. Crazy to think she was in her early 20s when this came out. Great.
I had this album when it was released and I think it stands the test of time. Emotional and dark with some great songs
God is good
Solid girl angst. Great writing and a good band
One of the best that they put out
This was a good intro to the generator I think. It was definitely good background listening. The harsh edges of the voice worked really well with the classic pop-rock sound. Might need to listen again to engage with it a bit more though as it was purely background listening.
Way cooler than ironic would have you believe - I think I'd probably have had a different opinion of her work if it'd been sold as a bit more on the grunge side rather than being on the singer songwriter. Sexist marketing much?
Like
If there is one album from the 1990s that has the most 90s sound it is probably 'Jagged Little Pill' by Alanis Morissette. For those who grew up in the decade it brings back many memories, but this album isn't just great because of nostalgia - Morissette is a talented songwriter and musician and this album had a lot of impact on the rock scene later on. 'You Oughta Know' and 'Ironic' are two iconic songs but the rest of the album is also strong. It's a great album overall.
So many hits!
I recently went to a party with a '90s cover band and when "You Oughta Know" came on the audience lost its collective shit - an absolute banger that is so cathartic to shout along to (BUT YOU'RE STILL ALIVE!!!). There are loads of hits in here, but I haven't listened to this entire album in a long time. I think this album was the first time I heard a woman say "fuck" in a song. Also maybe still the only time I've heard "wine dine 69" or "friend with benefits" - paving the way for other horny angry Queens like Fiona Apple 🙏 This is a super consistent album that is pure '90s - grungey guitars mixed with pop drum machines and hooks and Alanis absolutely wailing about this fucking asshole* *Dave Coulier, but also Life, Catholicism, and Patriarchy
Waar de ruwe zang in hits You Oughta Know en Hand in my Pocket een sterk punt is, is over een heel album net iets te veel van het goede. Overall wel gewoon een sterk 90s album.
Finally a good album! Still think she's a little bonkers but it's great music.
Great indie pop album
She makes Phil Anselmo look cheery in comparison. Holy fuck she was such a hater on this album, like actually the angriest album ever recorded.
A solid album with some great songs. Some better than others obviously, and would probably have to mix in some other tracks, but a great listen.
Great songwriting great delivery
BANGERR
Fun and iconic lmao
Taking me back to the early days of high school. I loved the edginess of this album. A rocker yet soft somehow. Definitely made me feel a certain way listening to it and in my books any album that brings out emotions is a winner.
Strong songwriting, raw vocals, and edgier lyrics than I remember from the trimmed clean segments that would often end up in every film and TV show of the 90s-2000s.
Very good album didnt expect to know so much songs on here
I went into this thinking Alanis is just yesterday’s Taylor Swift, but there are some absolute bangers on here, including perfect, hand in my pocket, head of feet, you learn, and the other radio songs.
very good, liked it a lot very influential
I remember my english teacher playing 'you oughta know' in high school a while back, nice album
Surprisingly good. I enjoyed several tracks and seemed very original to me.
One of my first cassettes (bought it with Boyz II Men II). I can still remember screeching along with her in my room, with a Barbie as a microphone. My poor parents. 4/5
1990s edgy and the beginning of emo punk for me.
Solid debut after her child star career . Good songs and a team that met their goal of making her famous backing band really shows on some songs . Still can’t believe she wrote that song for that dopey guy on that show I never watched
I like
Definitely takes me back, didn't enjoy it as much as when it was first released. It is still unique and has some greats songs.
Classic. One of the two first albums I bought and still holds up almost 30 years later. 4/5
This record is A N G R Y. I'd never listened to it and knew the overall demeanor about it, but it's different to actually hear it. It's also a super well-made record. Lots of extremely recognizable songs that feels like the epitome of a 90s rock record.
Generally a fan of the punk rock vibes on this album. The classic songs are iconic, and I'd say the others hold up. I'm not the biggest fan of weird lyrics, and on first listen I'd say this album boasts its share at times. Some of the less popular cuts start to sound a bit similar. 8/10 Favorite Songs: You Oughta Know, Head Over Feet Least Favorite Songs: All I Really Want, Not the Doctor
rocky!
Is this album a product of the 90s? Totally. Does it do a great job at showcasing the artist's talent and abilities? No doubt! I can see why this album did extremely well because Alannis took the sound of what was popular (grudge and alt rock) and made it into an artistic statement that felt both personal and inspirational. I feel because of an album like Jagged Little Pill existing there wouldn't have been artists like Gaga, Adele, or even SZA to incorporate her blueprint in the future. 4 out of 5 stars.
Alanis wrote the song of the summer for like all of the early 2000s with this one album. Everything makes so much sense after listening to this record. + I like it when she tells me to be a good boy
Four iconic 90s songs. Alanis is a complete badass.
De lo mejor.
When Jagged Little Pill is good, it’s fucking awesome. I don’t think people remember just have huge Alanis was for a period. She was literally god, it was all due to this album. You Outta Know is the breakup song Taylor wishes she had in her. I love the album but slightly too much filler for a 5. 8.6/10
Idk. It's pretty good.
Pure nostalgia. Was obsessed as a kid
Alanis Morissette is a rock legend to the max, she can really whip a horses ass! Don't forget, the best thing about this album is Wesley Willis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_fg_D1noOY
A monumental album from the 90s seemingly filled with endless hit singles. On a full album listen, the weaker tracks stand out, but not by much. A very good picture of the mid 90s
This was a really good album some songs were unexpected to me I assumed it was going to be like a Fiona apple sorta vibe and it definitely was and so much more I liked the blues elements in some of the songs and I found it very interesting at some points
Great album. Fun fact: this was the first album I ever owned. My mom gave it to me when I was around 8 years old and I loved and knew every song. Weird day for it to pop up here, 1/22/24.
Is it even legal for there to be so many bangers on one album? I had never listened to this one front to back before, but I was surprised by how many I already knew!
I bought this album on CD a few years after release when I was going through a breakup and I could relate to a lot of the songs on the album and helped me get through. Some really good cutting lyrics. I don’t know if I was the target audience. I was late 40’s then and in my 70’s now but I still love this album. All memories of the reasons I bought the album are now gone but I like it in its own right having lots of memorable tunes. I don’t wallow now in its melancholy but will put it on to happily sing along. I sold the original CD a few years ago but recently obtained it again from a charity shop. As a regular visitor to charity shops searching for cheap CD’s you can more or less guarantee that this album will be on the shelves of every shop selling for a few pence. What that says about the album I don’t know. Probably it’s because the album sold in such high numbers there are plenty about and were disposable when owners (like me) discovered streaming. I have also obtained the acoustic version on one of these visits which compliments the original. I put this album in my top 5 guilty pleasure albums and one I will keep coming back to.
Alternative goat
Morissette poured her heart into ever song on this album. It has a lot of variety while still staying a quality LP. At times it can feel veeeeeery nineties, but it’s not necessarily something against it.
Fun album, recognized a lot of the tracks despite never listening to this before.
4.25
I can see why this sold so well. I enjoyed a decent bit but got tired of it in the later half. Rating: 3.9
überraschend gut
Growing up during this era, I was never the biggest fan of her music so I really did not expect this album to slap as hard as it did. Packed with hits I remember from my past and a wide range of emotion tones. This album surprised me. I don’t think I’ll listen to it more as a result of this listen but when a song comes on, I’ll have a much better appreciation for the complete album.
Much more solid of an album than I remember. I remember my sister had this album and played the shit out of it in the mid 90's. I hated it at that time, but it's actually really good. Now that I haven't heard any of these songs for 15-20 years, I can actually enjoy them. So many of her hits came from this one album. Ironic, You Oughta Know, You Learn, Head Over Feet, Hand In My Pocket... Favourite songs: Ironic, You Oughta Know, Head Over Feet, You Learn, Hand in My Pocket, Right Through You Least favourite songs: Perfect 4/5
I had not heard this album before but I had heard of Alanis Morissette’s name. This album was shockingly good! I did not like the first track at all (All I Really Want) but after that I was thoroughly enjoying the album. My favourite song was: You Oughta Know. I even found myself recognizing a couple songs that I had no idea were from this artist, those were: Hand in my Pocket, and Ironic. I will listen to this album again!
The best female rage album
Lots of screaming
I remember when this came out, I had it on repeat and knew all the words. Was so different from all the other stuff out there and loved the angsty vibe
Really excellent piece of work from the 90s. Iconic, ironically.
Enjoyed this- interesting lyrics but also good background
i liked the album quite a bit but no songs beyong the six (6!) singles and the bonus track really stood out to me. loved the lyrics and her vocals. "All I Really Want" has always been my favorite song of hers and it opens the album so strong. I cannot decide between 4 and 5 stars.
There's not really much that moved me outside of the singles (BUT THE SINGLES ARE ALL TIMERS)
This is definitely an album I need to be in a specific mood to enjoy, and I wasn't in that mood but I can appreciate its merits. It was nice to revisit some songs that I don't hear often, I especially love Not the Doctor.
I went into this thinking I was going to dislike it. However I found it to be highly enjoyable, if a bit uneven. Well worth a listen.
Solid throughout, good lyrics. Very 90s Standout songs: All I really want, forgiven
Iconic indded!
This was the soundtrack to my 95. 95 & 96 actually. Unstoppable
Empowering, independent
Hell of a classic to me. This album has exactly my age and listening completely for the first time ever was cool. Never liked Alanis very much, but this one is a banger 4/5
So many good songs on this album.
Some classics
It’s like rain

Raw, mid-90s energy. A lot of the album really holds up well, due largely to the unique vocal style that lingers somewhere between singer-songwriter and grunge. It does lag a little here and there but the singles are very strong.
On every CD shelf of the 90s. Excellent album.
Surprised at how much I enjoyed this album.
not as good as I remember...
4/5. A great collection of grunge and pop and although her voice can be a little jarring at first with the cracks and nasally whines, it's what makes this better. Like she is mocking the genre while also shining through it. Some of the energy gets lost later in the album but these are just well-written songs at the end of the day. I enjoyed this one despite the precedence I've had from society telling me I shouldn't like it. Love breaking those norms.
As a Canadian alt-rock lover, this album is a very important document in our cultural history. It's very mid-90s, but it contains more than a few classic tracks and a buttload of energy. A refreshing approach to the breakup album -- not heartbreak but pure rage -- this is a true rocker. Emotion flows through every song. "Ironic" is sorta dumb, and has been extremely overplayed, but it's still not a skip. This is a super fun listen (with a few forgettable tracks scattered through it).
I'd never go to bat for her vocals but god damn this album has some bangers.
This albums face slaps me straight to the childhood, watching Charmed on TV after school. Very first song I heard from this was You Oughta Know on a singing competition. While barely speaking any English or picking up lyrics I still remember how much I was affected by the strength of that songs. This song is soaked up with raw emotions which are communicated so clear without even needing to speak English to understand.
I enjoyed this. It's held up well, I reckon. First listen, for me.
Like a death row hard-on, two minutes too late
A Classic one, by far Alanis best, full rock at his best.
Really good album, obviously a well known classic and can see why it made her huge.
Well, I remember this one being a big deal at the time. The thing is, young ones, back then our options to listening to a record were a bit scarce. You could buy it or borrow it from someone. I listened to the ones that were on the radio and, although they didn't bother me, I was also not really thrilled to go after the album and see why there was such a hype around it. And now, almost 30 years later, here I am, listening to the whole thing for the first time ever. And boy, it's dated as fuck. But it's also quite good! Her voice is powerful, most of the lyrics are great and it reeks as mid-90s, which is a basilar part of it being dated, but also checks my nostalgia boxes perfectly. I'm glad I finally got to hear it. =)
top dan za alanis
Some really catchy songs, not much filler. Good vocals.
This album could be 10 times better if it was mixed better. I started by listening to the remaster and the mix was dreadful, but the original version wasn’t much better. It just feels a little base, they need to center the mix on Alanis’ powerful vocals and give the drums more of a presence. The other criticism I would levy is that the songs can be a bit difficult to distinguish because their style is a bit repetitive. Otherwise, the songs are quite good. I’m impressed by how many of her hits (most of them) come from this album alone. Through this album Alanis Morrisette paints a mundane, but enchanting, portrait which I found quite enjoyable, despite some missteps. 7/10
Honestly, this shit slaps... Great album

Ja leuk!
Great album, sharp lyrics!

One of the most popular song of her is „Ironic“. Love hery voice and her lyrics. Her song „Thank U“ which is not on the album is also good! Personal top3 in no order: Forgiven You Learn Ironic
Acoustic version of this album is my favorite. Best songs: You Oughta Know (original version is the best because it sounds the most like an angry, spun up, jaded ex exploding into a soapbox rant—we’ve all been there and hating on your ex and being angry that they are happy and over you is not a fun thought so hence this rage song). Favorite first listen: Mary Jane. Reminds me of Sarah ar Eagle Outllok today. wondering if she is feeling any of this. i wish i could send this but i think it might be censored because of the title. But if you put the name Sarah in place of MJ, that is what I imagine she has experienced these last few months.
This was my favorite LP in the first half of 2016, while I was still a university student. After years, there are half of the tracks continues being loved, while other half are not. Fav Track: All I Really Want
I remember when this album came out and Alanis was EVERYWHERE but this was actually my first time listening to this whole album. A solid album; You Oughta Know and Ironic are the stand outs.
Decent album, brings back some memories from middle school days, but not something I need to listen to often in the future
Her vocals irk me at points, but I can’t deny how many good songs this album has.
Recognised a lot of the songs on this one
What’s left of my early teen misogyny really wanted to dislike this, and dismiss it like I did when I was thirteen and it was inescapable. But it’s too funny, surprising, smart, feisty, and strong to be swept aside. And far too Dylanesque.
This feels like quintessential 90s music. I went in expecting to know Ironic best but realized I knew You Oughta Know more (and enjoy it a lot). Overall it was a solid album.
Really good
This shit slaps
Had heavy radio & MTV play when it came out, but not heard it for a while, good to hear again.
we're so back(?). hopefully will be able to keep doing this. lots has changed since I last did this, mostly for the better. excited to start this again and excited for the future.
Essential Tracks: You Oughta Know (Playlist) You Learn Head Over Feet Ironic
Great break up album. I liked the vocals and the straightforward sound.
Bratty, grating 90s girl-rock at its finest.
this is the first review I do from the homepage in months it was cute, I don't think it'd quite 4 level but to distinguish it from some 3 ratings which I found much less enjoyable I'm putting it there it's a 3.7 or so in reality but I liked it enough
Enjoyable; listened to a few songs on repeat.
what the... the generational gap rocked my bonkers :o is this how people spoke English in 1995?
Some great tunes. Ultimately her voice is wearing. Some dodgy lyrics (reflecting her age and maturity I guess). Still, v. enjoyable as a whole
Well produced album, not my cup of tea
Just the right amount of angst, very 90s, 00s sound with some classics. Favorite tracks were Right Through You and Forgiven
Somehow avoided this one for decades. Stacked with absolute bangers.
Very good. Enjoyed most of it
Good I listened
Wonderful voice. This album takes me way back. A classic.
Her voice annoys me a bit at times. Right through you is a mad song. Epic basslines ina couple of songs. Perfectly encapsulates that period of the 90s to me. It does reek of Karen haha but it's still a banger. Everything is going to be alright. Ironic is 10/10 perfect nothing wrong with anything just perfect What a great album can't believe I slept on it for so long and so obviously
So. Many. Memories. This album was huge in the UK when I was at university, and I connect so many good memories with these songs. It's not perfect by any stretch, but for me it's pretty close.
Helppo nelonen. Viihdyttävä levy muutamalla täytebiisillä höystettynä, toimi toimistoympäristössä sekä pyöräillessä.
4.5 stars. Despite not knowing the definition of ironic, Morissette does know how to make a great radio alt rock album. Lyrics aren't subtle but aren't too overt, hooks are catchy, lots of emotion is captured while still feeling relatable, production is clean without losing too much grungy feel, length is perfect. Standouts are "Ironic", "You Oughta Know", "You Learn", and "Hand in My Pocket".
Reminds me of college
For all the misogyny-tinged sneering about Ironic’s lyrics, Jagged Little Pill still very much stands up as a fantastic album on a number of different levels: chiefly as an invective against the way men often blithely mistreat women, but also musically and lyrically (with Not the Doctor being an absolute standout track on that front). An enduring album that was ahead of its time in managing to simultaneously be so righteously angry and wildly commercially successful
Really liked this album. Holds up well today, and its impact on modern music is clear. Several songs added to my library, and a strong track list overall. 8.5/10 Track rankings 1. Ironic 2. You Learn 3. You Oughta Know 4. Forgiven 5. Head Over Feet 6. Hand in My Pocket 7. Right Through You 8. All I Really Want 9. Mary Jane 10. Wake Up 11. Not the Doctor 12. Perfect
Grande parte da essência dos anos 90, relembra os hits, MTV e fm.
Loved this album when I was in middle school!
An absolutely exceptional debut album for Morissette. While I believe it has moments where it slights drones on, it is an exceptional album, showcasing her vocal ability. It makes sense why this is considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the 90s.
- A 90s classic - A cool unique vibe that's very alternative - A couple iconic songs - Would totally go back to this album
- classic - taylor drummed on this (or at least the tour) - lots of hits - someone once told me none of the examples in Ironic are actually ironic and that ruined the song for me
Only halfway through my first listen and am loving it. As a 15 year old who wanted distortion everything, this album was one of my most loathed. Childishly mocking her singing, I found it absurd and whiny. Good god how wrong I was, beautiful singing, lyrics, composition. Just fantastic.
Good, personal alt-rock. I knew five of the songs before I listened to it for the first time (‘You Oughta Know’, ‘Hand In My Pocket’, ‘Head Over Feet’, ‘You Learn’, and ‘Ironic’), which I’d say is a pretty good track record. I don’t know, it’s good. I’d say it doesn’t deserve too much praise, though (how did it get the funny number spot on the Rolling Stone Top 500).
I haven't listened to this the whole way through in about a decade, so I was shocked by how many hits are on here. Like 75% must have been a radio hit! Some of the lyrics are a bit cringey now (particularly the ironically-not ironic "Ironic"), but there are some great songs on here. Although I can't listen to "You Oughta Know" anymoee without smiling at the memory of Kevin from the US Office performing it at karaoke.
It is quite good album. Among those that were popular because of radio - this one deserves it.
Full of bangers. Such refreshing lyricism, so snappy and bitter, and the delivery only occasionally trips over into twee. It's not gonna be on high rotation but it feels pretty seismic and to have this many undeniables on the one album is no mean feat. Fave track: You Oughta Know
Love how she messed with her vocals to make each song a beautiful story.. Wish the instrumentation was just as unique as her voice..
Always enjoyed this album from when I first heard. Had on CD, sold with rest of CDs.
Mad that this came out nearly thirty years ago and is far more provocative than the 'shocking' artists of the last decade. The big songs are great, you oughta know in particular, completely stands out from similar records of the time. The production is too 90s for me to really love it, drums are tinny and the guitar distortion is scaled way back to make it sound 'rocky' without actually being so. 3.5
You Oughta Know, Forgiven, and Ironic are great. Definitely one of the best singer-songwriter albums. My parents had this, was often on in the background when they were doing the washing-up. Hints of nostalgia, but a genuinely good album.
I heard this album loads when it came out. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. I have no rational reason for disliking it however and it contains some excellent songwriting and has had a huge influence on many artists since so I will give it a 4+/5
3 very strong songs (You Oughta Know, Ironic and hand in my Pocket). The rest isn't bad either, but doesn''=t catch the same attention as the other 3. Do find myself wanting to turn this album on though, so still giving it 4 stars
When I first put this on - having not listened to it in 20+ years - my wife walked in and asked who it was trying to do a bad Alanis impression. Turns out it was Alanis herself! Which kind of sums up how quintessential, overplayed and dated this sounds in 2023. But it’s hardly Alanis’ fault that she hit upon a blueprint that was driven into the ground in the following decade. There’s lots here that still holds up very well and this was really enjoyable to revisit
p1995. p772. 4.5 stars. The source of every neurotic female singer/songwriter since 1995. Sharp lyrics and cracking tunes. Half a point docked for the occasional grating harshness of her voice.
Love the fury of You Oughta Know and the words and music on most tracks. A few throwaways. And Ironic is just annoying. But great album.
kinda cool vibe tbh
Esta chevere
Very fun.
This is a strong album with Standouts in You Oughta Know, Hand In My Pocket, Mary Jane, and Not The Doctor.
All around great album.
pretty solid album end to end. A number of iconic 90s hits in the mix. Takes me back but doesn't have the strong nostalgia of some other albums from this era
Excellent
A walk down memory lane. I haven’t listened to the album start-to-finish since the early 2000’s. It holds up as a very strong product of its time and as a great album about heartbreak and pain in relationships. She was the slightly older, more edgy Taylor Swift of her era, a Canadian legend.
This was perfect in its time.
A classic for sure.
Achei bem interessante, não sei como colocar bem em palavras, mas acho que 8/10 já diz o bastante.
4.5
Alania Morissettes best album
A thesis on enlightenment; this is the encapsulation of a young woman's realization that placating others expectations is nonsense. This album is pure poetry with an unfortunate backing track of 90s alternative instrumentation. Still, the lyricism and delivery of Alanis Morissette make this album an artistic pinnacle for her, and it's an album that I can put on at any time and really enjoy.
You oughta know: Banger Forgiven is kinda epic guys
This album is the epitome of the 90s. There are several well known songs. Looking back on it, the songs aren't great, but they were catchy. The filler songs are completely unnoteworthy. The album is better than a 3 and not really a 4. I will round up.
5/6/23 like hearing ‘one week’ on bnl’s stunt, it’s real weird hearing a lot of these songs in context - god but they Do fuck tho, every single non-single here is so good Fave Track; forgiven
all around solid album. i’ve always loved her since i saw her in a curb episode
I knew more songs than i thought i would.
unironically really enjoyed this album, until I was reminded Ironic was part of the album.
Angsty and Iconic 👌🏻
Forgot how good this was.
Paar zeer iconische tracks hier zoals You Oughta Know en Ironic. Verder klonk prima!
GREAT STUFF
Very 90s, very angsty, and very good
YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU OUGHTA KNOWWWWW. Great album, classic
I wonder if in 25 years people will look back on Olivia Rodrigo's SOUR in a similar way that people look back on this album. 8/10
Wow, a real relic! 1995 encapsulated in one sick album. Nothing quite like bursting out "And I'm here to remiiiind you/of the mess you made when you went away"
Undeniably innovative, and generally very enjoyable. In the words of that one Tiktok video: “I’m smart but I’m stupid I’m gay but I’m straight I crop dust at Wholefoods, baby! What it all comes down to Everything’s gonna be fine fine fine” Fav tracks: You Oughta Know, Ironic, Hand In My Pocket, You Oughta Know (Jimmy the Saint Blend/Your House)
What a marvellous listen. I have missed this and I didn’t even know it.
You Oughta know is a fucking banger and a lot of the vocals in the first 4 tracks read strangely like an emo Björk
So many Songs
This is similar to what’s the story morning glory in that it’s cultural reputation precedes it. On its own though, there’s a lot to like here. I enjoyed the bouncy vibe of the opening track and the brutal honesty of You Oughta Know. I feel like there’s something Dylanesque about a lot of the songs. Head Over Feet was my favorite.
Let's get two things out of the way. This is not her debut album. Alanis may not like her prior release, but it exists. Second, I can't get over the rumor that You Oughta Know is inspired/about Joey from Full House. I have come almost full circle on this one. It was a phenomenon when released, but over the years suffered from after the fact criticism of its simplistic views and 90s production aesthetics (thank Glen Ballard). Now I see it as a damn solid release from an emerging artist. The acoustic disc on the 25th anniversary helped on this reevaluation. One nit, many of the examples of examples in Ironic are not really examples of irony.
I am familiar with all the hits but have never heard the entire album or really even listened closely to the lyrics. I was surprised how good this album is. She and her songwriting partner are sharp, edgy, sarcastic and witty. I feel like Liz Phair could have written some of these. It also rocks musically. All told, I liked this a lot more than I expected to.
This is a very good album, but short of a 5 for me even though I’m glad I heard it (the bad luck of being after Darkness may have played a role here). As good as the hits are, there were just a few too many tracks that I’d call filler. Also I’m sorry but the way she sings certain words was very hard for me to get past. Pretty funny that Flea plays bass on “You oughta know”.
I remember reading reviews of this album when it came out. They mentioned Morissette was on “You Can’t Do That On Television” and I was certain she was a corporate “alternative” plant. But the songs were catch and “You Outta Know” was a bit dirty. Her songs were everywhere that year. So I avoided listening on my own. But later I heard her explain that the lead single was written about her ex, “Full House”’s Dave Coulier, and the song and album became more interesting. Now these years later I appreciate how this was Morissette’s album to attempt to break away from her corporate handlers. Sometimes you need to rid the songs of (perceived) baggage and add time and listen again… it’s a good record.
This is a total classic. 90’s at its best and what a cool album to have had back then. So many great songs on here breaking the mold as Alanis says what she thinks and does what she wants. An album that probably shifted a generation at that time, especially women. This was a staple growing up. Favs: All I really want, you oughta know, hand in my pocket, you learn, head over feet, ironic
Bona fide classic. Didn't realize she was Canadian, nor that she was 21 when this released. How you gonna put out an album like this, with this many hits, at 21? Couldn't be anything less than four stars, the highs are simply too high. Very unique voice, a little bit of genre exploration beyond the singer-songwriter boundaries. Alanis killed this one. Worth the acclaim. Favorite tracks: Hand in My Pocket, Head Over Feet, Ironic, You Oughta Know, All I Really Want, You Learn. Album art: Definitely iconic. Color and theme seems inspired by the Cure. Today is the first time I'm noticing that the red shape is also a face, I assume Alanis. Just a very cool design overall. 4.5/5
This sounds like a lot of music I heard before, but nothing I know sounds like this. The bass player is really good. Almost half of the songs were hits. My favorite song is not one of those: right through you.
It makes me mad that this album is 28 years old.
Holds up!
Such a strange and captivating voice. An iconic album, if ironically known for getting irony wrong. Alanis Morissette 4eva
