Great album I can always jam out to

Was surprised at how many of these I recognized past the top 3. She was much bigger in my childhood radio stations than I realized.

The songs that you know are great. The songs that you don’t know…. Yikes. Overall a great time capsule to a different time.

Ok, so half of the tracks are so ingrained into 90s culture you wouldn't think to relisten to them, but I was so impressed listening at an older age with the quality of the song writing. Alanis wrote everything herself, and it really does feel like a personal project. Enjoyed this alot more than I was expecting to

Classic 90s album with some big hits and catchy tunes. Not exactly my style but I can appreciate it for what it is.

I forgot how good the songs on this album. At the time I thought this was over-produced but it is refreshing to not hear auto tune all over everything.

Alanis made a wonderfully delightful album that was one of the defining albums of the 90s. The production is great, the singing is excellent, and the lyrics are fantastic. At a little under an hour long runtime, the album does feel a little stale towards the end, but the whole record is also so original and very fun that it doesn't bother me. 4/5

Surprisingly catchy throughout. She has lyrics I didn’t appreciate in the 90s

All time great fuck you album

90s banger

Someone in the other reviews called this a time piece, and that's absolutely true. The 90s bleed through in every aspect of this record from production to arrangement to sentiment. Amazing album. Standouts: You Oughta Know, Hand in My Pocket, Forgiven, You Learn, Ironic

All I Really Want - Great opener You Oughta Know - ANTHEMMMM Perfect - Relatable but I feel like there's smth missing idk Hand in My Pocket - Oh this slay Right Thru You - 69 line gathered me omg Forgiven - Religion can be so horrible sometimes You Learn - ANTHEMMMMMMMMMMM Head over Feet - rlly rlly cute, i need this so bad Mary Jane - (Definitely going to be about weed) Ok so it wasnt about weed- this song is actually rlly fckng heartbreaking Mary Jane I'm here 4 u Ironic - Songwriting masterpiece. period. Not the Doctor - TELL EMMMM, relatable pt.2 Wake Up - yasss

Was king of its time

I love this record. Ever since it came out when I was 9. Yes there are many common places from the 90’s in it but man, those hits are really great and also, Alanis has an incredible voice. Now 28 years later I can truly say that Head over feet is my favorite. Yes it has that cliche harmonica but it does work on it.

90s angsty Canadian goodness

Schwaganis Boringette

It is absolutely no wonder this is a ‘90s alternative staple. The angst, anger and unbridled emotion that Morissette dispels here is so raw and really lets the audience appreciate her writing.

Don’t break up with Alanis

You outta know this is a good album

Probably a 3, but Alanis kinda scares me.

Favorites: -You oughta know -Hand in my pocket -Right through you -Forgiven -Ironic This was such a great experience

One hand in my pocket, and the other hand in my other pocket

Gosh, this album reminds me so very much of the mid 1990s. Of course I had (probably still do) this on CD. Lots and lots of people did. What strikes me about it now is how hilariously emotionally undeveloped it is. "I'm here to remind you of the mess you left when you went away" - sorry pet, he went away. Your emotional response is no longer his concern. How can we forget her breaking into another guy's house and getting upset to find a letter from another woman. Hyew lass, why not try not being a creepy stalker, laying in this guy's bed so you can, um, smell him? Honestly, it's the 90s equivalent of going through somebody's text messages. For all the emotion and talent on display in this album, I'm fairly sure that the problem was her. This thought is pretty much solidified by "head over feet" - the man she describes is doing the minimum fucking possible. He listened to her. He held the sodding door open. Clearly the catch of the century. Um, yeah. I'm guessing that she'd been self-selecting asshole blokes then getting upset upon finding out that he's an asshole. Finding a Prince has nothing to do with kissing frogs. Probably a better place to start is "Not a pond". Get some self respect. I guess that this album is quite good in that we'd had decades of whiney white boys being able to put their teenage inexperience and dismal ineptitude onto vinyl, and yeah, it's sure nice to have a woman do that, but it's still whiney emotional ineptitude being shown here. All that being said - this album was massive, and did shift a paradigm or two, which has to be acknowledged. And I mostly enjoyed listening to it again for the first (maybe second) time in a decade or more. Biggest surprise was the absolute reawakening of my hatred of "Mary Jane". I had completely mentally erased it from my memory of this album. For the aged familiarity of non-single tracks like Perfect or Right Through You, Mary Jane stirred memories of having to skip the track as the only genuinely bad track on an otherwise great album. I was honestly surprised at both how much I disliked it, and how completely I had managed to remove it from my memory of an album I must have listened to hundreds of times. Rating this album may be tricky. Because I really do find it (now) to be painfully immature, with a hilarious lack of self awareness or introspection (something most whiney white boy music has in nauseating overabundance) present. The music slaps though, and her vocals are generally pretty good. The production is great, and it genuinely is an album that changed music. I'd err towards 5 stars due to the impact of the release, but its underdeveloped character and the inclusion of the godawful Mary Jane does have to lock it down to a high 4.

I haven't listened to this record since the 90s. It was better than I expected/remembered.

lindo album

If ratings and reviews exist to inform others, it hardly seems necessary to rate or review this album, as everyone is likely to know the music! Needless to say, there are some now-legendary songs here that definitely deserve their status. Alanis properly established her own niche in the world of alternative rock with this album, which I'm so close to giving a 5.

Alternative pop sang by a great artist with some rock elements, it felt like it had the same impact as Taylor Swift but during the 90s

Got quite a few catchy tunes; hand in my pocket was a surprise to the eardrum. Some offalty lyrics, but during listening I sweated profusely from the right armpit and that only happens when we're onto something. Strong 3 to a light 4.

Honestly pretty fantastic

I've had some really good moments with this album haha! Right now there's currently a lot of hype about Alanis Morisette in popular culture. I enjoy Hand in My Pocket and a couple of the tracks but in between these I find her almost waily singing style can get a bit irritating after listening in a big chunk like a whole album. However, listening to this while working from home is very different to drunkenly belting the lyrics using a bluetooth karaoke microphone which is very fun and satisfying. There is definitely something very cathartic and satisfying about this album in the right contexts and I definitely don't hang my hat with the groups who find her too angry which is reductive and annoying, I love that she openly explored themes of female sexuality with this album. Overall some fun catchier songs which are great in a certain context but not the most chilled listening, and I think the album has importance for the world of music.

Always enjoyed the hits, never listened to the album. Good stuff

T3B 1. You Oughta Know 2. You Learn 3. Ironic Album full of hits, not perfect but damn close. Was hard not giving a 5, but a HEAVY 4!

Goeie plaat hor!

De werkster zei: ‘Ik luister dit ook graag. Ze is moslima geworden en haalt veel steun uit haar geloof.’ Ik zei: dat is Sinead O’Connor. Enfin; fijne plaat en fijne zangeres.

Women have always taken a back seat in popular music. They've fought and thrown some elbows to take their seat at the table, so when Alan's Morissette's Jagged Little Pill 'shocked' and drew gasps from the pearl clutchers that this docile little Canadian former children's television star burst onto the 'Alt-Rock' scene and sang about such things was released, it was fire. And it still is.

This is such a perfect 90s album. So many iconic songs. I love the classic 90s drums sound and all the guitar parts and tones. The songwriting is so great and the arrangements are really interesting. The tonal center changes in head over feet are so cool. Favorite moment was guitar noise in right through you

On repeat the year it came out. Some songs still hold up, others rather dated.

Uplifting music.

This is one of the most perfect 90s albums

Love the rebellious energy at the first half of the album!

Angst filled classic.

Listened to on 12/05/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: you oughta know, hand in pocket This album was so 90s grungy angst but that’s was made Alanis an institution so I’m not mad about it in the slightest

It's exceedingly 1995, no doubt about that. It's also another one of those albums that's a real outpouring of emotions and might come across as angsty, but it's still full of bangers in my opinion, and it's one of those albums that kind of defines the 90s. Some of the songs were misses to me, but it was mostly excellent with some impressive lyricism. Favourite: Ironic

82/100: I love getting albums like this one. That is, I love getting albums that I think I've never heard of before, only to find a bunch of songs that I've heard and loved but never knew the name of or who wrote them. "You Oughta Know" and "Ironic" immediately stuck out as songs like that on this album, but I also found so much more to love in this album than just rediscovering songs I'd heard in the past. Most of all, this album sticks out to me for the way Alanis unabashedly and expertly throws a harmonica onto otherwise very grunge-heavy distorted electric guitar riffs. That's such a cool pairing that on paper shouldn't work, but absolutely does. It's also something that fuses two of my favorite genres that I hitherto thought were unpairable. I never would've thought you could create a listenable middle ground between Bob Dylan and Nirvana (with a healthy dose of Olivia Rodrigo), but Morissette has proven me thoroughly wrong with this album. Fantastic album and a fantastic artist whom I hope to listen to more of in the future.

1. All I Really Want- got that sheen early 2000s instrumental, like the lyrical choices, harmonicas rock. Pretty good 2. You Oughta Know- cmon, this song is AWESOME. great chorus, great instrumental, the silent bits a cool, a classic 3. Perfect- slower, sadder, song about parents 4. Hand in My Pocket- another classic, another harmonica rocks 5. Right Through You- this ones fine, not much to say 6. Forgiven- Like this one, really reminds me of another song I cant think of, underrated cut. 7. You Learn- Obligatory "THE SAID THE ALBUM NAME" moment, i've definitely heard this one way back when, very very catchy 8. Head Over Feet- also familiar, also catchy, starting to thing I mustve heard the last half of this album somewhere and its so catchy that its stuck with me almost 20 years later. More harmonica 9. Mary Jane- sad, slower song again. cool lyrical choices 10. Ironic- Another CLASSIC, catchy, a banger 11. Not the Doctor- good metaphor, underrated cut 12. Wake Up- fine, catchy Overall: The underrated slower tracks, and lyrics make this go from a good album to a great album, the three classic hits dont hurt either. 4/5

I never really went with the adoration in the 90s but it's great set of angry songs with a good vocal delivery and some tunes that delivere hits. I want to dislike it but you have to admire the sheer force of nature. It doesn't merit a 5 but its damn good.4

Peak 90s and a guilty pleasure. One of those acts I was too cool to admit enjoying. I still think Jagged Little Pill is criminaly over produced, especially You Oughta Know. Alanis's voice is perfect and she captures the angst of the era and the age she was when writing the album

I already liked this one

Second listen. 👍: You Oughta Know, Not The Doctor, Forgiven, Right Through You, Head Over Feet Eh: Perfect, Mary Jane, Ironic, Wake Up 👎: All I Really Want, Hand In My Pocket, You Learn This one was more of a mixed bag than I remembered. I like a couple of the songs. You Oughta Know was my favorite, which was not a surprise. I was surprised by how much I liked Head Over Feet this time. My biggest problem with it is Alanis’s voice, which I still dislike. My true score for it is probably a 3.5, but I’ll give it a 4 since at least the bad parts stand out.

Mostly great album, couple of tracks are not to my taste. Haven’t listened in 20 years or so.

Queen shit

It's Alanis, she paved the way for a whole bunch of others so that alone warrants a high rating. Listening to it now doesn't give the same impact anymore - maybe because some of these songs I've heard hundreds of times. But it's a great time capsule for what music was like in the mid-90s and what eventually became a precursor to all the other cool stuff from the same decade and beyond. Besides the singles which are frankly pretty overplayed at this point, the standout tracks here are Forgiven, Mary Jane, Not the Doctor, and Wake Up.

Holds up pretty well, at times a bit ridiculous, but I went with it.

This is great. It’s confessional and blistering and FURIOUS. I was 16 when it came out and I remember thinking I hadn’t heard anyone being so honest on a record before. Haven’t listened to it all through for probably 20 years, but it still sounds painfully honest. A brilliant record.

Very good album - gets a little bit samey over the whole album.

4.5. It is so iconic.

I have no memory of ever listening to this cd, but I realised quickly that I was familiar with a good 80% of the tracks. I had never taken much notice of the lyrics - I think I wrongly assumed that this was a musical version of a rom-com. Couldn’t be more wrong. And musically, the only issue I had was with the singer’s harmonica playing. A little dodgy. But, overall, I really enjoyed this. A standout.

AS a point of principle, I'm not going to listen to this. I still have fond memories of it, memories that I've allowed to lie undisturbed for the better part of 20 years. (Occasional radio flashbacks aside.) I really don't want to have to overthink this now. And I know I will.

very good

An album essential to my emotional growth as an adolescent girl. It still packs a punch, but it does start to all sound the same after a while. My favorite songs are the essential You Oughta Know, Hand in my Pocket, and Ironic, as well as You Learn and Head Over Feet.

I'd forgotten how angsty and angry this album was. Loved this as a teenager. Love Right Through You, You Learn and Head Over Feet. Thought for a short time that Ironic was the most ironic song ever as none of the things in it are actually ironic, but it turns out that AM thought those things were ironic, thus cancelling out the irony...

Let’s all take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate that Alanis Morrissette was only 21 when this album was released, and yet she writes and sings with the maturity, years, and experience of someone far older. Angry, but never broken and actually quite hopeful in many places, ‘Jagged Little Pill’ (with the exception of a couple of dud tracks) is quite excellent.

This album is much better than I remember from my teenage years. Alanis's voice is awe-inspiring, and her angry lyrics are very modern (since the emo is coming back, it's very contemporary). I enjoyed it very much.

Kickball, weird walk vibes

I love this album. One of my first CDs!

good songs

This was a massive hit of nostalgia, and it still bangs. 4/5

Pure 90s grunge-pop singer-songwriter angst; all confessional lyrics, drum machines, harmonicas and misuses of the word "irony." Highlights: All I really Want, Hand in Pocket, You Oughta Know, Forgiven

first listen enjoyed this album very much

all killer, no filler.

This was good! Went into it not knowing what to expect but really enjoyed it

great album - powerful and authentic. some beautiful songs on there

I absolutely loved this album! The lyrics were hella relatable and I love her pop rock style - her voice is a slay too\ favorites: Perfect, Forgiven, You Oughta Know

Quintessential 90s.

The photo of her on the cover makes her look model like beautiful. In reality, she looks quite normal - good looking but normal - which, in her case, makes her music more sensible.   Her voice drove a lot of people crazy. I  eventually agreed but not until after this album.  One Hand in my Pocket is an excellent song - squeaky voice and all.  I like  the other hits and most of the songs. Today, you would have to pay me to see her live but when this album was released I quite liked her. My rating is based on where I was with her  in 1996

We owned this LP in 95. Around that time an old high school friend of Sue's surprised us and invited herself and her two kids to stay for the weekend. She drank way too much rum and played "You Oughta Know" so loud I thought the speakers (and maybe her kids' eardrums) would break. After that we didn't didn't listen to the LP much. Listening again to the the first song I think it's great that an album so raw, lyrically and musically, could win all those Grammy awards. But much of it is mellower and more commercial sounding than I remember, though the singing is still emotive. The hits are good, especially Ironic. I'll add a point for being the youngest artist to sell Diamond and I bet this will be better than The Britney Spears LP that stole the title a few years later.

þarna

Fun listen. Her voice really grew on me throughout the album. I almost skipped the first track because of how shrieky her voice was. But then I remembered how many good songs she had. And most of them are on this very album. I definitely see why it’s on the list. Love her lyrics. Still not crazy about her voice at certain points, but there’s no denying she has immense talent.

Highlight: Forgiven

Dobre, nie znałem z imienia artystki ani albumu, ale piosenki kojarzyłem.

first listen classic 90s

It was nice to hear this. As a teenager I was very unfair about this album as my sister loved it. I realise now it's pretty darned great.

I found her singing style to get a little tiring. This is a very important album to the 90s though.

-you oughta know -hand in my pocket -ironic

Pretty dope! Mitski but better >B] Sex

You oughta know it's ironic how i fell head over feet for this album. Pocket hand Sha Sha Sha. 4

You oughtta know

Banger 4

Lacks irony

I have listened to this album 10,000 times because my sister played it that many times when we were in high school, but I probably haven't heard it all the way through in 20 years. The first song is brash and abrassive and almost makes me turn it off. But after that it settles into an album of hit after hit, and I enjoyed listening to it again after all these years.

Excelente disco con ciertos toques de rock, acompañados de una gran voz. Y con canciones muy bien construidas y pegadizas

Really enjoyed that album, listened to it on a lovely sunny drive down to football and it hit the spot in lots of ways. And will relisten too.

Quick re-listen, as I listen to this quite often anyway. It's really, really good - crackles with energy, switches moods all quite smoothly, and there's not a bad song on it I don't think? 4/5, great stuff.

Didn't love every song, but this is an absolute 90s classic.

I’d forgotten how great some of this album is. There’s a few songs that I’ve skipped over the years. They felt new to me this time. I guess I’ve always skipped them.

Soars and digs deep. Cutting, honest words that rock.

Reminds me of Kevin, coincidentally my heart rate monitor wouldn’t connect. Coincidence? You oughta know.

didn’t realise how much of this album i knew. good vibes

slice of 90's fired gold, great writing, just a solid record start to finish.

Good album. Brought me back to middle school. There's enough catchy little ditties here to make this a 4/5

Fucking love the over-the-top vocal performance on this, it has so much character. I remember enjoying her singles quite a bit when I was young, and I still do. Lyrics are angry and edgy. So many memorable choruses that have stuck with me forever, even though I haven't listened to this album in maybe over 20 years. Could've been a song or two shorter but apart from that, I still love this.

I'm old enough to remember- vaguely, mind you- when Alanis broke big and how ubiquitous this album was. Maybe not THAT ubiquitous, since my mom didn't have it, but You Oughta Know was clearly a big deal. It's honestly kind of surprising that Alanis could break so big with how raunchy it gets when pop was mostly pretty sterile back then. Like sure, this is basically just proto-Good 4 u and back then, rappers and grunge bands could get away with f bombs, but imagine Mariah. The rest of the album is pretty good too, although I never liked You Learn. A perfectly solid pop album. B

Pretty much perfect. Alanis rules. ‘Nuff said. 4.5

This is a fine album and You Oughta Know is a GREAT song. And there are other good songs as well. It does get a little precious at times and perhaps a little self indulgence too but ot doesn't detract enough to think of Jagged Little Pill as anything less than a very good album. 3.75 🌟

Blast from the past. Didn't like her ballads very much, but the upbeat songs were all strong. Unique voice and a very memorable style.

Eat your heart out, Dave Coulier! Fav Tracks: "All I Really Want" "You Learn"

Excellent album at the time of release, does sound a little dated now, but still good quality.

Alanis Morissette rocks, that was awesome 7.5/10

Classic 90's stuff. Was a MASSIVE hit when I was a teen. Still holds its own. Bonus points for having RHCP members as the backing band.

This was my first time listening to Alanis Morissette and I enjoyed a lot! Of course the album is super dated, it has the full essence of the 90s. But thats not a bad thing. Super fun to listen to! Favorite tracks: * Ironic * Hand In My Pocket * You Oughta Know

The hits are hits, but the slow songs turn me off too much. If it was an album all of "You Outta Know, it would be my jam"

Classic 90s grungy pop. Some all time greats and solid filler. Love “You Oughts Know” and “Hand in my Pocket”

It's good, I enjoyed it. I found the first few tracks to be not that great (the first song was my least favorite one - not great for my prejudicial brain) but it generally got better as the album progressed. Great songs like "Hand in my Pocket", "Head Over Feet", "Wake Up" and of course "Ironic".

Men, huh?

Someone gave me this CD as a gift back in 199Whatever and I was sooooo disappointed by the mere suggestion that anyone thought this was something I might actually enjoy. Did they not notice my Helmet t-shirt? What else is a kid supposed to do to advertise that they ain't down with some pop-alt girl rock shit, ya know? And then I finally listened to it and... I didn't hate it. I think my big hurdle was just not really being sold on the whole angry image that "You Oughta Know" carried with it when that song was shot out of a canon and suddenly absolutely everywhere. Plus, I'm on the record as hating harmonicas in general, so that was a strike against her. But the more you listen here the more the likability of Alanis comes across and the catchiness of some of these songs either works or it doesn't. It mostly works for me. What I'm saying is that it kind of won me over, in spite of me. And THAT's ironic, Craig.

I'd forgotten how many singles there were on this album. Can anyone name a song by Alanis that's not on this album?

Really enjoyed listening

love it!!!

One of the first albums i ever bought. Probably havent listened to in well over a decade. Never realized how Canadian it sounds.

it's good.

Dated as hell but still a lot of fun.

♥️♥️

Great '90s sound. A lot of reviews are calling this "dated" and that may be, but in another sense it was ahead of its time. Maybe "timeless" is a better word?

I probably hadn't explicitly listened to this album in 20+ years but still know virtually every part of it. This album was *everywhere* in the mid-late 90s. Sometimes I can't really tell if I *like* it or not - there are (many) times where Alanis' voice is tough to take, and especially on the opening track "All I Really Want" but at the same time it's catchy as hell... ...which might be a review of every single song on the album - almost to a track, they're each catchy in their own unique way. It's an impressive record in terms of variety - from the alt-rock of "You Oughta Know" to the top-down easy-going sound of "Hand In My Pocket" and the by-now overplayed and over-memed "Ironic" it doesn't really get boring. It sounds really good too - I enjoy the creative double/multi-tracking of her vocals in spots which really punches through the mix. Not that it really matters but she was 21 when she wrote these songs (with Glen Ballard) which is amazing. Her vocal imperfections while occasionally distracting are actually interesting to me (still in the era of not correcting every single note) in that you're hearing her emotion [also apparently most of the songs' vocals were done in one or two takes]. You can almost call this a/the quintessential 90s album - put this on and you're instantly back in time. It's definitely an important album and worth hearing for sure...couldn't figure whether 3 or 4 but i'll give it the nostalgic bump. 7/10 4 stars.

1/31/2021 Today's Album: "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette - This album is starting off very well with the track, "All I Really Want," which has a really cool harmonica and distorted guitar, which is kinda my bread and butter. Not huge on her vocals but they sort of have their own charm at the same time. Reminds me a lot of Avril Levine. You Oughta Know is a pretty fun song with a crazy chorus and an incredible bass grove throughout. The placement of the guitar in the mix on this one is also really pleasant. There's some nice psychedelic guitar chords too and I can actually see why this song is insanely popular even if it is kinda dated. It's really catchy and her vocal performance is actually really impressive, even if it is strangely accented. She feels like both squeaky-clean teen pop artists like Avril and marketed mom rock artists like Adelle but it's actually very well done. Perfect was more laid back but still really well done. Hand in My Pocket I had heard before and it is an absolute banger and a classic. Right through you is a little more basic for her, but it keeps the flow of the album going in a really great way. Forgiven is a darker track, which is okay but it follows another pretty basic track so it just doesn't hit in a very impactful way for me. Still, she goes absolutely crazy vocally in this track and sounds almost like evanescence. You Learn is a nice uplifting track about how you learn from every experience you have good or bad and I think its really well done. Head Over Feet is a pretty nice love song and I think it sounds pretty nice. Mary Jane is also a nice uplifting song that might also be about weed but who knows...Ironic is obviously a gigantic hit and honestly has aged well in my opinion. Not the doctor is a break up song and goes well as a closer to the last 2 songs. It's bitter and clever and overall solid. Wake Up is a nice closer, but the ending really shines with the extra reprise of You Oughta Know with the extra amazing vocal performance in Jimmy the Saint Blend. I think its a really interesting and powerful way to end things off. Overall, this album is a classic screenshot of the late 90s and early 2000s and I enjoy it still a lot Score: 8.5/10 Pretty good :) Highlights: All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, Hand in My Pocket, You Learn, Head Over Feet, Ironic, You Oughta Know - Jimmy the Saint Blend

A classic breakup album. Ironically, probably my least favourite track is the most well-known one. Some really good driving basslines underpinning solid 90s rock

Not my kind of music but it's pretty good

It's aged poorly and other artists did this but better. That being said, Morissette can write a half decent pop song

Best Song: All I Really Want. It feels like lurking behind every lyric and note is a barely unspoken "Fuck You." Worst Song: Hand in my Pocket. I like the lyrical theme of "I'm one thing but I'm also juxtaposed opposite thing", but the conceit of "I've got one hand in my pocket and the other..." is so silly it takes me out of the song every time. ESPECIALLY when the other hand is playing the piano. Overall: A really good album that feels raw and adventurous, but occasionally gets in its own way with lyrics that try too hard to be clever and just come off as goofy. I won't beat the dead horse of the song "Ironic", but it hinders an album that otherwise runs with such an intensity it feels like it might come off the tracks at any moment. Also, this was my first time hearing the a cappella outro to "You Oughta Know" as the final track of the album, and it really demonstrates how incredible a voice Alanis Morissette has.

solid sound, I had listened to a lot in the past, but seems overblown listening to it now.

When first released, I was too much into Britpop and indie bands to appreciate this album and judged this album as too poppy. Over time, however, I’ve grown much fonder of JLP and turn to it every once in a while for that 90s crystal clear nineties production nostalgic pop guitar radio sound, released at a time when selling aggressively marketed records actually made labels money. Alanis is a hoot, chucking everything into the vocals and sticking it to ex lovers. I’m also reasonably confident now that the lack of irony in Ironic was a deliberate ironic joke. And I was today years old even I learned Flea plays the incredible bass part on You Oughta Know rendering this album the perfect expression of how the nineties sounded.

Guilty pleasure

Angsty pop/rock, good stuff

Hell yeah Alanis

Some nice tunes I had forgotten about on this album - genrally just not the biggest Alanis Morissette Fan but that blast from the past was nice

This classic album from Alanis Morissette features a heavy backdrop of anger and angst which is channeled into post-grunge. This album is powerful and demands to be heard. Though I don't think this album is as successful as some of its contemporaries, it is extremely important in the history of popular music and is incredibly influential.

Glad to have kept listening through the radio tracks.

Pop-Rock with some classics. Solid but not great.

Bien arreglado, la voz de A.M. se siente muy natural y cruda, y el aire grunge en general le quda muy bien.

She tells such a vivid story! Certainly one of the best from the timeframe.

Lyrics are awkward at some points but very solid music.

ITS LIKE RAIIINNNN ITS A FREEE RIDEEE ITS THE GOOD ADVIICEEE. Alanis Morissette. She is fun. Some notes are unexpected. I like it. One second its sleepy next its crayzay. one hand in my pocket. ironic. you oughta know. wasn't able to listen to entirety of album. 5/10

This is a tough one with no half star options. Easily a solid 3.5 rating so almost went with 4, and maybe back in the day I might have but with age and how many other killer albums I foresee rating as a 4, couldn't bring myself to give a 4 (still almost did based on a few songs). Used to listen to this album a lot when it first came out, enthralled by Alanis's unique voice, anger and aggression. And then there was the crush I used to have on her odd, lanky beauty😊. Close to a pop album but some hard, fun and insightful lyrics (will she go down on you in a theater, I'm brave but I'm chicken shit, you like pain but only if it doesn’t hurt too much) coupled with some good instrumental mixes (harmonica on All I Really Want, hard beat on Right Through You, guitar riff on Not the Doctor [along with style and lyrics vaguely reminds me think of Ani Difranco, save the chorus]), I can get pass the poppiness of Ironic (I preferred the other hit of Hand in my Pocket) and the ballad of Perfect, which I used to skip over. While I always appreciated the passion and emotion of Mary Jane, seemed to hit a little more close to home being on the downhill side of the roller coaster…The last chance street car went off the track and you're on it...What's the point of trying to dream anymore...Are you happy…

This was a 5 in 1995!

*Classic 90's Alternative album *Unique vocal style *Super iconic

So many classics. Amazing how many iconic singles are packed into a single album. You Learn is likely my favorite. 4/5

actually can't say I've listened to any part of the album other than the hits. I'm shocked how much I like the balance of the album. deserves it's credit.

031121 19:31 3.5

“As slick as the music is, the lyrics are unvarnished and Morissette unflinchingly explores emotions so common, most people would be ashamed to articulate them."

Jagged Little Pill is a great indie rock album. At the time I was really impressed by its quality. Listening to it now the songs remain great only the lose vocals of Alanis annoy me from time to time. Some of the slower songs have vocals that are too often off-key in a not a nice way. That's too bad as she is a great singer.

Pure distilled early 90s

I feel like Thursdays are turning into the emotionally devastated days, this is a superb album

The girl version of Alan Morris

Great album. I listened to this a lot when it first came out. 4 stars.

Everyone knows this album, and has a favorite song off of it. Radio airplay was much better than I thought, and there are so many slappers packed in to this one album. Good job Alanis

Actually genuinely good. Never heard any of the not hits on this and I like them.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: You oughta know, Forgiven, Ironic

I’m not too sure why I hadn’t heard this whole album before. It’s probably because I’ve heard about half the songs a million times over 25 years so I figured I’d heard the best of it. All the songs on here are jams though.

Mid 90's production abound but you can't fault the strength of these songs or the influence this album had on other female singer songwriters mining that angst. Best Tracks: All I Really Want; You Oughta Know; Ironic

Always loved this album

monkas

An excellent listen ! 4*

I grew up loving her voice and this album!

Took me back in time and I forgot just how many catchy hooks were on there. Also some irritating vocalization, but definitely a good bit of nostalgia and good to hear a strong female voice!

Isn't it Iconic?

Oke een album met gewoon keiveel wijvenschijven, dat kan niet anders dan goed zijn.

Raw and powerful vocals overlaying catchy alt rock melodies. Production value is among one of the best of the era. Morissette would play a pivotal role in female representation in pop music to come, inspiring dozens of female musicians such as Katy Perry, Pink, and Shakira. I absolutely love the raw emotion and mood shifts that Morissette uses to reach the audience beyond the lyrics. Favorite tracks are You Oughtta Know, Hand in My Pocket, and Forgiven.

A guilty pleasure. A brazen voice of 1990s.

the album as a whole is pretty good pop music but "You Oughta Know" carries it hard

It's so fucking emotional and rich. Man, I fucking love her on the low. You oughta know man, She is just talking that fucking shit and I love it. Add in hands in my pocket and Ironic. Super solid album. Just emotions on full display with no covering it. AAAAHHHH fucking love it.

One from my teens. Enjoyed listening to it again after 25 years. Some weak songs but the good ones are still good

Played it to bits when it came out … But don’t really go back to it … 🤔 Some great songs and not even 20 from the heart lyrics and very immediate vocal performances … takes me back to a time and place in the soundtrack of my life

I really wanted to hate this album and tell Alanis to get over herself, you’ve been dumped. It happens. Coupled with the incessant, whiny vocal style I was pre disposed to hating it. BUT... There are some good rock anthems here and she has a good set of pipes on her. Coupled with a good quantity of radio tracks, this album turned out to be really rather excellent.

Reminds me of the cranberries discography. Some hits, a pretty easy listen.

This is such a great album. What more can be said, this is one of those albums that stands the test of time.

Wow the first CD I bought as a 10 year old. Happy to report my musical tastes have evolved significantly in the past 25 years, but this album still left a mark. I'll always remember trying to understand the lyrics and not knowing what to make of (that hasn't changed). On this listen, I was still impressed by Flea's bass on You Oughta Know and all those jangly guitar effects and 90s production tricks. Not all has aged well, but still something I'll come back to in 25 more years.

Loved Ironic, You Oughta Know, Forgiven, All I Really Want rest of album was still decent but other songs don't stand out as much.

Her best album and still one I can listen to every week and not get bored of.

Great to finally hear the whole album. The singles still hold up, I wasn’t as into all of the songs but it is still an iconic album

My sisters listened to this album on repeat for about 2 years during my teens. At the time I hated it, probably because of the amount I’d heard it at home but also on the radio. The fact that my sisters liked it probably added to it. As I’ve aged, I’ve mellowed to it and it’s now just nostalgia from my youth and I can appreciate the album more. Lots of catchy tunes, lots of angst lyrics

A total classic, an enjoyable angsty album! Never listened to the whole thing through before.

I've heard a few Alanis Morissette songs in my life, and they're all on this album. It had like five hit singles apparently? That's kind of insane.

Had heard some of the songs previously but ended up really enjoying the whole album. Love the angst and capture of the mid-90s

Classic, good to hear again.

Damn, for some reason I wanted to not like this album. In spite of that I really enjoyed the hell of it. It really rocks in so many ways.

Solid Record

Many songs recognizable from 90’s radio. Aged fairly well, background rock. 8.5/10

you oughta know and you learn are standouts

loved "you oughta know" (Ofc), "hand in my pocket" OMFGGG this is such a good female empowerment album

All I Really Want - Very good You Oughta Know - Amazing Perfect - excellent Hand In My Pocket - good Right Through You - very good Forgiven - amazing You Learn - very good Head Over Feet - excellent Mary Jane - excellent Ironic - amazing Not the Doctor - very good Wake Up - very good 9/10

I never liked female voices, and my 90s were all about grunge stuff mostly. However, I loved this album, hugely! It's fantastic. It's so out of my usual likes it always surprises anyone I confess to. You Oughta Know is one of the all time greatest pop songs, without question. I still love the album now, I haven't heard it in a while, this was a welcome reunion.

i actually liked the album, it's nice but not as much as i thought it'd be, but it's something more personal, it's not a bad album. This one's pretty good, such a nice production, good letters and that's it good, but not that much. My favorite ones are Forgiven and You Oughta Know. Nice album, liked it.

pretty good i would give it a 4.5

Such a fantastic album. Proof that anger makes excellent rock.

This album is a classic. Alanis manages to pack all of her greatest hits into one project, and even the most icons ones for the wrong reasons. A great blend of pop and alternative, with simple song themes of love and heartbreak. Favorite Song: You Oughta Know

Io c’ero quand’è uscito

I liked this one quite a lot. I enjoyed the singing, the variety between songs and also the background music which usually sounded pretty simple superficially but still seemed to offer a lot of depth and variety between songs. Good album!

kevin malone covers you oughta know

Saved Prior: You Oughta Know, Head Over Feet Off Rip: All I Really Want, You Learn, Wake Up Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Great breakup album that has found me when I was not going through a breakup. I LOVE You Oughta Know regardless though the emotion is so crystallized. Don't normally like this kind of alt-rock but this was very good. 3.5 rounded up because there were no out and out clunkers.

Been a while. Class 👌

Stands up to the test of time for me. Very good songwriting.

better than i expected

Surprisingly OK

good, but mostly for the singles

Great album, definitely a classic from the 90s. Not a bad song on the album.

One of my mom's favorites, grew up listening to this album

Man I forgot just what a giant this album is, so many hits. Her voice and style opened the doors for so many.

Fav: You Oughta Know, Forgiven, Head Over Feet

That was my first time listening to the entire album. I believe this was enough to finally erase Alanis’ pop songs from memory.

It's ironic how good this album is

Listening back I am starting to see how it was turned into a musical, and I’d actually like to see it. Had some great flashbacks to when I was a kid in the 90’s and played this album a lot. Great portrait of the angsty 90’s pop rock and her voice comes through well on songs like “perfect”

Wow. Punched me right into the 90s. Fantastic album

I dig this. Her voice might not be for everyone but I think it does the 90s, young woman angst pretty well. Also more than half of this record is singles that were incredibly successful. The main focus is her lyrics but the playing on this record is nothing to slouch over either (Flea makes an appearance). Overall, solid 90s album. Favorite song: You Oughta Know Least favorite song: Not the Doctor

you know what? i really fuck with it. it's ironic how straightforward alanis is given her most famous song is called "ironic". ok i'm done. fav track: hand in my pocket

Iconic songs like Ironic. Raw, uplifting songs

Ganske krutt faktisk haha

I listened to this one as a kid, lots of memories here, but it has never been a breakup album for me.

I've listened to this album many times over the years, but it was fun to listen to the whole thing as an album. It holds up really well for the most part and brought back memories of first hearing it playing in my college bookstore!

I've listened to a bunch of songs off of this album over the last year, but I haven't listened to the whole thing in nearly 25 years. The first half of this album is full of great songs. Her voice is powerful, and despite the fact that it hits some sour notes from time to time, it kind of fits with the passion of the album 4/5

Great, fun album. My rating is however biased because I was already familiar with her music.

Great overarching feel of the album. A very interesting and unique singing voice and great songwriting. Timid and powerful, emotional and expressive.

I really like Alsnis Morissette and this is definitely one of her greatest albums. Although she sings off key sometimes I still really love her energy and her lyrics.

Hell yeah, this is a bop. Got all the hot tracks. Hot one after hot one, get at me.

not really my thing but kind of an insane album regardless

This was full of attitude and I loved hearing some familiar songs. Excellent!!!!

i loved the album especially the lyrics i cried with mary jane, the production feels so fresh and balanced i think my favourite songs at first listen are mary jane, you learn and hand in my pocket

Cracked me up that my first album was one I was already intimately familiar with

Main vocals are nasal and strident and demanding of attention. Many statements are imperatives, even the questions. Guitar sounds like a second voice with lots of power chords and progression. Unlike modern pop, complex melodic ideas that breathe on their own instead of simple ideas with complex harmonic interweaving. Rhythm slots around melody and harmony.

Honestly wonderful :D

Would she go down on you in a theater?

Mid- some of it was strong, most of her vocals are just annoying...

Not the biggest fan of her style of singing but the instrumentation is just too good not give at least a 4

One thing that I really enjoyed about this album is the production. Every sound has meaning and adds so much to the emotion of the record, even if I don’t fully like some of the compositions in this album the production on most songs will be what keeps me coming back. I feel like the vocals and lyrics are kind of hit or miss for me personally but it’s still a soild LP. Fav tracks: perfect, hand in pocket, you learn, ironic, and wake up

Now I know who made Hand in My Pocket. It's added to the library. Really enjoy the sound.

All good bangers, just not really my thing. Definitely of its era. While I don't consider it amazing, it was an enjoyable listen and I appreciate it within its sphere.

Some songs are too similar to Radiohead - first thought that came to my mind. Interesting vocals choice bc sometimes it seems like she is singing off tone. I know that’s on purpose but it’s still feeling a bit harsh and unpleasant for ears. Personally not a fan of. But it’s definitely feature which add something special. I like the whole vibe of album. Reminds me of light chill energy. Songs that I even liked on YT music are Mary Jane and Hand in my Pocket. All of them kinda similar but I’m not about liking all of them. Not my genre of music to listen to especially on repeat. But it deserves attention. Good

The OG Robin Sparkles and you can tell, in a good way?

it was alright

First rating, not really my style, recognized a few songs, kinda sounds like she's yelling sarcastically, good/unique lyrics, don't think I was or ever will be angsty enough to appreciate this album.

Alanis har noe slagere, liker 3 av låtene fra før! Veldig 90s lyd, digger ikke alt, hun kan bli litt intens men overall kul plate!

Some classic songs here but agree with the comment that it sounds a bit dated

I don’t know, some of these songs I love, but it does go very long. Also wish she had used more live instrumentation. Her touring band after this album was so strong, it’s a shame she didn’t get them on this record.

I would give it 2,5 if I could. I get the vibe kind of, but also I don't.

Alanis Morrisette- Jagged Little Pill (1995) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was quite surprised that I seemed to know most of this album already. Her voice grated on track 1 and I thought this would be a 2 star rating but the quality of the songs, the 90s nostalgia and Alanis reining in the vocal histrionics a bit rescued an extra star from me. Good album that I probably won’t listen to again

-incredible intro -love the electric guitar -vocals are insanee -genuinely the vibe is just immaculate

ah bixa pra gritar

This album is legendary, but I have to admit I had never fully listened to it. When I signed up for the 1001 Albums Generator, this was exactly what I was hoping for from it. I think there are a bunch of these albums and artists that I know but, for some reason, have never gotten into. Sound-wise, the album has great guitar playing and great drum sounds. It has a raw rock sound but with some "modern" production choices. It sounds like the '90s in a good way! Alanis's attitude shines throughout the album, and some lyrics are really cleverly funny.

Wel leuk, heel dramatisch op het einde

Iconic will always be iconic. I wish I was born in the 90s with my cd player. Wake up and hand in my pocket are my top songs

Such a great beginning to the album, brilliant songs with a lot of vulnerable and real emotions. The second half of the album didn’t grab me as much

Uneven alt album with some iconic songs and a lot of forgettable filler. Morissette's vocal delivery is the most hit or miss part of the album; she either brings a solid intensity or veers far to heavily into tough shrieking. Not bad, but could be a lot better. Top tracks: You Learn, Ironic, Wake Up

Top : Forgiven Flop : You Learn

Angry, raw, but overblown bc so many wanted to think it was tough

There was a very strong lineage of angry women in the world of '90s music, and Alanis Morissette both kind of slots into, and overshadows it. Firstly, let's get this out of the way; Alanis Morissette is not *nearly* my favorite angry woman from the '90s. I am more of an L7, Babes In Toyland, Sleater-Kinney gal. But I also can't really pretend to be surprised that Alanis Morissette is much more popular than any of these artists. Jagged Little Pill is one of the most aesthetically and commercially successful attempts to really pop-ify grunge; *And* she spends this album lashing out at men who have treated her as disposable, and it turns out that a *lot* of women can relate. It helps that she presents her lyrics with *no* frills, whatsoever, just utter bluntness. It makes the more targeted tracks here really feel like *accusations*. I will say that this approach makes some of the more vague songs sound a little clunky though. I, for one, think it's at it's worst on Hand In My Pocket and Ironic, even though they are iconic songs that I enjoy listening to. On the other hand, it really works on songs like You Oughta Know and Right Through You. As for the sound of this album, there are a lot of really popular, iconic songs here in general. But honestly, I prefer my Riot Grrrl with some more punk sensibilities. But like I said, this album is so successful for a reason, and I had a good time overall.

I've never been a big Alanis fan. Her music is ok, but it's not for me and I was too young to really get it when it came out. That said I recognize the impact she had on pop and alternative music back in the day.

6/10… pop-rock / 90s alternative / *1995

Not finished it yet. Some absolute bangers on here and now I totally get the Alanis to Avril Lavigne lineage. Wanted it to be a five but some cringey lines ("You're my best friend // Best friend with benefits") and some filler songs here. But maybe that's just my Britishness coming out and being a guy and not celebrating someone to expressing their emotions wholly and truly. I think the first three songs of this album are immaculate, however. Ironically, 'Ironic' didn't hit that hard on this listen, but I've always preferred 'Hand In Pocket' anyway. Still, it's an album that definitely deserves to be on this list and would recommend anyone to listen to it, especially in the summer, after a breakup. God, the 90s were shit, but I fuckin' hate the modern age. Turn your phone off and put this on, you'll have a better time. 3.5/5? Will probably listen to this more than some of my other 4s or 5s but Qué Sera, Sera, apologies Alanis.

doesn't get any more 2000s npc rom-com than this

I knew some of these songs from when they came out, but I would never have chosen to put on a whole album of Morrisette. A quick read indicates this album was not only popular but also highly regarded, so I resolve to try to overcome some prejudices. The rock feel had never convinced me – guitar less integrated with the songs than even folk-rockers The Corrs managed – I think fondly of Melissa Etheridge. The not-always-in-tune voice did not attract me – was it somehow cool to be deliberately inexact? The shock-the-bourgeoisie lyrics did not convince, but the songs are not uninteresting – maybe the pitch between cynicism and candour really spoke to the young of the day? Maybe the brash and oomph was talismanic for young women in particular? I still find hard to imagine that anyone loved the yodelly yips quirk. TLDR, I can't feel it as great, I'm not even sure it's good, for me it's Okay, 6/10.

3 (tres) + (1/2)

top songs: you outta know hand in pocket ironic

I actually knew more songs than I thought on this album! Glad I got to rediscover them and add to my playlist.

“Hand in My Pocket” and “Ironic” are impressive. “Right Through You” has clever lyrics — they might even be better than those of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl.” “You Oughta Know” is a timeless classic.

Almost every song on here feels a bit too long, which is also the case for the album itself. There are some great moments on here and I want to like it, but I think some restructuring would make this stronger for me.

Great album from the 90s. This was everywhere on the radio when I was a teen, and still a fun listen to this day.

An album with several inescapable hits. Never really did anything for me but my wife loves her and plays her stuff. Forgiven has a really cool melody.

Pretty good, but most of the songs I hadn't already heard were forgettable. I like her vocals Fav track: All I Really Want, You Oughta Know

Thought I’d enjoy this one way more. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good album, but outside of some standout tracks it’s mostly just alright. Morrisette has a great voice that makes her stand out from other 90s alt-rock artists, but a lot of the songs on the album blended together. Outside of maybe Perfect they tend to follow the same dynamics structure, and while there’s clever lyricism there are songs that just feel like retreads of the “X but Y” theme that was found on Hand In My Pocket. Still good, just not as good as I wanted it to be.

Nice but not my type

It sounds like Dear Evan Hansen’s mom released an album

loved ironic!

I remember it being better idk

5/8 Meh

It’s hard to rate as an album since half these songs are huge hits I’ve heard most of my life. It is very good. The songs still sound great. Mary Jane is a dud but otherwise is a very good and timeless pop album

i think this is just not for me . I didn't like it but i don't think it is a bad album. Also her voice is unique in a good way

Massively popular album, you’ve got to admire how brave she was lyrically - especially at such a young age.

Fist two songs are quite rocky. With harmonica on the background. Perfect is relatable af.

The guitar was great but other than that I didn’t really like it I listened to the entire album just not my thing

I didn’t finish it, but from what I remember it was a solid but what I assume is the bottom half of the 1001

Wanted to rate higher but outside the hits the other songs aren’t very interesting. Think I would have given a 4 when I was 18

My main reaction throughout this album was 'if only xyz, it's still entertaining though'. Really strong 3, but I wouldn't choose this album to listen to again. Really awesome, it might even be my favorite 3-star album yet. Added 'Ironic' to the playlist so at least I'll remember this album. - She better start singing at some point... - At least it's kinda catchy I guess - Random hugley popular song I've hard a million times. Thought I recognized the voice - This genre will always struggle to get a ranking from me, but I am enjoying this - I feel like this album, covered in the 2020s, and I'd love it. It's just a tough sound and her voice isn't my favorite. - This is an awesome album that I wish I could love. So many HUGE pop songs that are burned into my head and I don't even know why. Would've been fun to be living when this came out.

A bit meh, 6/10

Dit album doet me dus echt heel erg denken aan Anouk, de Nederlandse zangeres. Beetje dezelfde hoek van alternative poprock. You Oughta Know is natuurlijk een ontzettend bekend nummer. FAVO: You Oughta Know, Hand in my pocket, Ironic

6 - remember this being better. She is mighty salty.

didn't like it so much. some songs are good, but ñe

The sound of being 18. There were better albums then, too. Some nicely nostalgic memories here though.

é um album ok, não passa pra mais e nem pra menos

Músicas pra ouvir na rádio rock entre as 10h e as 16h

É os 90 nao são para mim

Xanax?

This was dripping with 90s vibes, and the classic "You Oughta Know" was a hit even I recognized. A lot of emotional and clever metaphorical lyrics aimed at bad exes. Not my usual style, but it was a very interesting listeb nonetheless.

Gets bonus points bc ironic is on the album

some real bangers. amazing voice. recognized two songs from the album so 4.5/10
