Reviews (page 7 of 14)
Album #: 208 first impressions: Thrilled to be giving this a listen. I've gone back to it a few times in the last few years after rediscovering it when I heard "In My Place" on a Now That's What I Call Music compilation listen through (it was a good way to pass time/relive memories while training for a half marathon.) So far, it holds up. The melodies are often pretty and memorable, the piano/orchestral touches/ and clean production add to how contemporary the music feels even though a lot of the song structures, lyrics, instrumentation, and themes aren't particularly innovative. Chris Martin's vocals are sort of like adult contemporary Thom Yorke. The percussion feels very alive throughout most of the songs even though music in this genre in this era can feel very canned. Maybe millions of people aren't wrong for liking this band? At least during this album. I'm not sure when their sound got so bloated and boring but it was after this album for sure. after listening through: It's hard for me to know if this album is really actually as good as I think it is or if its nostalgia blinding me. I'm trying to judge by the songs I am less familiar with (e.g., "A Whisper," "Politik," "Daylight," the title track) They feel like relative lowlights of the album, but are still interesting and pleasant, if less memorable. I hear classic rock influences. I hear how cheesy the orchestral swells might sound 20 years later. I do not hear groundbreaking poetry. I can imagine it being played alongside other artists considered mediocre (e.g., the Fray, pop era John Mayer.) And yet. When I hear "In my Place," "Clocks," "Warning Sign," and "The Scientist,"( and even "Green Eyes," which I like significantly less,) I can vividly imagine multiple points in my life when I've heard those songs and/or recall the music videos and my emotional state(s!) And I can see how they might feel like that for others my age, too. But also how they might not seem that way for those older than say, young Gen X, or Gen Z or younger. They have their own cinematic pop rock albums to lean on and I can totally hear how these songs might just sound like cell phone commercials. Overall, it was very much an album that accompanied my formative years, during the dying days of US monoculture. To the uninitiated, I would describe this album as more approachable Radiohead or maybe 00's U2 vibes. post-reading reviews/wiki: Well. These reviews are 100% what I expected. Time to start an early Coldplay apologist club. relisten?: Pretty likely that I'll be forced to hear one or more of the singles from this album when consuming media from this era. Prettly likely that I'll choose to give it a listen when I'm wanting to relive younger years.
Mellow soft/pop rock with some surprising relatively heavy parts. Overall an enjoyable experience that will linger for longer than expected.
I own A Rush Of Blood To The Head and the previous album from Cold Play (Parachutes). I've listened to a lot of music from Cold Play and I've seen them in concert, but it has been a while since I've listened to this album. I might not be as quick to listen to Coldplay as in the past, I was still happy to listen to this album again and would come back to the album again in the future. " I had forgotten about "Warning Sign", even though I really like the track. "Clocks" is my favorite track from the album followed by ""Warning Sign", "In My Place" and "The Scientist".
Really enjoyed this album more than I had anticipated.
There are times when listening to Coldplay makes me think of hurtling through the sky, wide-eyed and every nerve tingling. Sometimes the songs are heartbreaking. Speaking of which, this album would get 4 stars from me on the strength of The Scientist alone.
So... this is where they become big rockstars, huh? Not as thought-provoking or intellectual as I expected it but it does what was required. Although one can pinpoint where the rot starts to set, this is actually not a bad thing at all. But I wouldn't call this Coldplay's best album, having actually gone through their discography. The potential has been realized, all that needs to be done is to fully capitalize on it. Favorites: In My Place, God Put a Smile on Your Face, The Scientist, Clocks, Daylight, Warning Sign, A Rush of Blood to the Head.
With all the hate that Coldplay now (quite rightly) get, it's easy to forgot that they used to write some great songs. I don't think this album is as good as Parachutes (and my opinion is probably biased by some preteen nostalgia), but it's still a decent 4 out of 5 in my book.
You go into this thinking it’s going to be alright and so-so and then you’re reminded why Coldplay became one of the biggest bands in the world There are so many brilliant songs on this album (the first half in particular) Kind of tails off a little towards the end but the first 5 tracks are pretty much untouchable for memorable pop/rock hooks You’d think hearing these songs played to death for the past 20 years would diminish them, but they stand the test of time
Highlights: The Scientist, Clocks, A Rush of Blood to the Head Leave Em's: Daylight, A Whisper Overall Thoughts: Coldplay have mastered a sound that is unique and crafted to their music. I just wish that not every single song used the same formula, flow and instrumentation which is what it seems like their discography contains. I really enjoy their massive hits and even some of these album cuts. I was just hoping for a little more variety in a full project however. This review sounds harsher then the score because I do like the sound of the music and I did find some new songs to listen to, I just hoped for more. Overall, a good album that I think reflect Coldplay very well. Score Breakdown: 3.727 & 4 -> 3.864
Album 77 of 1001 Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head Rating : 3.5 / 5 Favorite Track : Clocks Good songs. Good vocals. Good musicianship. Good production. It still just doesn't hit me in that spot that leads me to say..."yeah, that's an awesome album". I respect the quality of what Coldplay does. I see where some could consider them the greatest ever. They just don't hit home for me.
3.5/5
Rock alternativo. Algún megahit. Venga, un 4.
It’s “boring” but when you understand that 11th September influenced on this album. You finally may find this special mood and understand everything.
Familiarity bias. I think I put one or two of these on mix tapes for a boyfriend. Or maybe 2 🙊
So much baggage with Coldplay. This is not bad, but it does kind of feel like they hit on a formula for a song and have been riding it ever since. The Scientist is better than Clocks. This would be a good 3.5.
A very good album with a couple of standout tracks. My favorite is the Scientist — great piano parts. Somewhat downbeat but still worth having in your collection.
This used to be a very good band. The scientist is an excellent song and many other on here were of a quality Coldplay had not reached in almost 10 years. I forget that sometimes.
I don't know why, but the early Coldplay stuff has some kind of magic for me. Don't know what it is, but - those chords, man! And his voice! I agree that the second half of the album falls a bit flat, but in general it's an experience. + Politik + Clocks + In My Place + God Put A Smile Upon Your Face + Daylight
One of the albums I have on vinyl. I was never a particular fan of Coldplay, finding them too "mainstream" and annoying at times. For some reason I always made a connection between Coldplay and Paulo Coelho - maybe because their most famous work has familiar titles - Alchemist and Scientist. And also because their work is so much form over function. Very convoluted, full of overthrown metaphors and overused phrases. But at least in case of Coldplay you are able to look at it from a distance and enjoy it, unlike with the book. Fun album, just don't try to dive too deep.
I already knew I liked this album. Excellent songwriting and strongly emotional performances all the way down the tracklist. I'm not always in a Coldplay mood but when I am, it's usually this record I put on.
I am a defiant millennial. I will protect Coldplay and give them additional unearned stars.
At best some of these tracks channel a kind of Radiohead-esque wistfulness. At worst, they're a bit bland, particularly in the latter sections. Overall the better moments outweigh the blandness. Shout out to The Scientist - loved the record and video when I was younger, still stands up now.
Listened to it last night and this morning, really liked it and I knew a few of the songs already. Some weren't really my pace but I added two songs to my Spotify "liked" playlist.
First record that I own a physical copy of. Listened to this a lot when it came out. It came out in a time when I almost exclusively listened to rap music but this still hit me, like the rest ow the world at the time. Haven’t listened to this album or Coldplay in general for almost twenty years now. But this still holds up.
Reading the reviews, I didn't realize that Coldplay was so polarizing! This review is through nostalgia goggles as I used to listen to this album regularly in college. I am quite fond of The Scientist, Clocks, and Green Eyes, but the rest of the album doesn't grab me as much as it used to. The Scientist is one of a handful of songs I can play on guitar, so it has a special place in my heart.
I've got to admit that this is a really well written album. There are a lot of catchy, well crafted songs. I'm not a big Coldplay fan but I do remember listening to this album when it came out and enjoying it. It's probably been since the year it came out that I've listened to it all the way through but that's probably my own thing for thinking they were too mainstream of a band and not "cool" enough. I've got to give it up for this album though. They wrote some really strong acoustic, pop/rock songs. It makes sense that this album kind of catapulted them to the next level and made them a mainstream band. Not sure if that could still happen today with this genre of album, regardless of the strength of the songwriting. Standout Tracks: Politik, In My Place, The Scientist, Clocks, Daylight, Warning Sign, Amsterdam
One of my all-time favorite albums!! There are so many good songs, I have played this album more times than I could count. This is by far their Pinnacle album.
BYO meaning. Calculated with precision to appeal to as many people as possible. Can aiming for universal appeal be an artistic endevour? Does it matter? Leaving artistic merit aside, this is an enjoyable listen. The first half is full of huge, well crafted, singles and the second half sweet soft rock. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: In My Place Date listened: 23/04/23
As a whole, the album is okay. A couple of standout songs, but nothing really special. Favorite Songs: Politik, God Put A Smile upon Your Face, Clocks, Warning Sign, and Amsterdam
This was a nice refreshing classic.
Yeah, strong high school vibes. This Coldplay was a nice turn of the century neo soft rock to me. Chris Martin has an airy and lofty voice, and the band supports that with a sort of ethereal sound. Scientist is soo good. I loved clocks then, but now it just feels kinda old and cheese.
From what I've seen and heard, there are apparently two rules to music: • Pretend to hate Coldplay • Pretend to enjoy jazz This album is very cool and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I'm not super familiar with Coldplay apart from the big hits (holy shit, these songs have a lot of Spotify plays). I get the "bootleg Radiohead" comparisons and all that, but hey, gay British alt rock has always been one of my favorite genres so the more the merrier. I don't get how people can call this album soulless with songs like "Clocks" and "The Scientist". The Goblin King is pleased. He will not awaken today.
Before coldplay became their own punchline (during?) you just couldn't deny them. Album slightly dragged down a filler back half, but hot damn you've got banger after banger for the first 5 tracks. If you're not emotional by the end of the scientist you might want to check your pulse.
Coldplay gets a bad rap
Re-listening to this was fun. I bought this CD in HS lol. Coldplay gets a bad rap most of the time but this is def a good album from their humble beginnings. 4.5 for nostalgia but rounding down for the grand scheme of things. May buy this on vinyl though!!
I think I like the older Coldplay stuff. Most of it's pretty relaxing. I like the more soft rock style over the more pop heavy hits a hear nowadays. But this album was nice
No tracks that I don't like. Album tracks same quality as singles. A chilled album not a get up and boogie!
4/5
Classic....
Don't really know, and don't really care, why Coldplay gets a bad rap but I think we can all agree that in the scope of of 1001 albums, we're all entitled to our own dirty little secrets. I liked this album.
Väldigt bra
I enjoyed the album quite a lot. Not stand-out enough for me to justify five stars. But then again, I was listening to it more in the background and am not entirely certain I did the record justice.
Wow, this was beautiful. I need to defend Coldplay more than RHCP I guess.
One of my favorite Coldplay albums - it was their alt/soft rock period before they got really poppy
Some excellent songs that could fit any era.
classique
Already LOVE COLDPLAY! great vocals, and memorable songs throughout the album. This album was awesome overall and a great listen!
I didn't come into this expecting I'll enjoy Coldplay album lol. It's actually not too bad considering. Pretty poppy and somehow repetitive sometimes, but I liked it Saved tracks: The Scientist, Clocks, A Whisper, A Rush of Blood to the Head
Coldplay gets a bad wrap. Especially over the last 15 years or so. But their first small handful of albums have a lot to offer. Although simply written and performed, the strength of the music here is quite good and although I prefer their debut, this here undoubtedly has the Coldplay sound fully developed with the piano work and yeeee oooohhhs and aaahhhhs. And while there are some nostalgic radio hits here, my favourites are definitely some of the deeper cuts. "Daylight", "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face", and "Green Eyes" shine through the most for me. Lyrically though, Martin doesn't fail to disappoint with some pretty cliche lines. Personal Enjoyment - 9 Songwriting - 7.5 Lyrics - 7 Originality - 7.5 Production Value - 10 Artwork - 10 Overall - 8.2
Loved it
Deeper than the popular singles. Amsterdam is legit.
Alternative soft rock album with a lot of the songs using repeating melodies to build up to a climax. Very solid throughout except for maybe Clocks which is overplayed and a little overrated. Even has the country sounding Green Eyes.
It's not as good as Parachutes, because that wintry charm has gone and been replaced by stadium bigness. It's better than anything after, because they can still write good songs. I thing a career rating of their albums would essentially be a countdown (5,4,3,2,1,0,0,0) though I did give up giving them chances around the excerable 'Every Teardrop'. I can't hate Coldplay as I hate U2. I think it's because I can fully see Chris Martin lying awake at night worrying that he's lost the ability to write a song anywhere near as good as Spies ever again.
Very solid album, heard it before. Like the publisher of the Daily Bugle once said in that film about drums, "not quite my tempo." Amsterdam is up there with The Scientist and Fix You for their best work.
Good
Whoa, ok. I know it's cool to make fun of Coldplay, but I was actually kind of blown away by this album. Many hits that stood the test of time, flanked by songs that didn't feel like filler (as songs on albums that are top-heavy often do). I'm sure the rest of their albums still suck ass, though. Standouts: In My Place, God Put a Smile upon Your Face, The Scientist, Clocks, Green Eyes
8/10 I liked this wayyyy more than I expected to. The last few tracks are really great
4.5
*puts this on after that shitty ass michael jackson album* now this is some real music fr tho this shit kinda catchy. probably not as good as the first album but still pretty baller
If Parachute wasn’t so good, this would be 5 stars
this is obviously heavily radiohead-inspired but this is still a really good album. i recommend this album even to people that aren't that big of a fan of coldplay.
Well that was better and more musically interesting than I expected.
When I first saw Coldplay come up I rolled my eyes, but after listening I really enjoyed this album more than I thought. 4.5
Really tasteful album by a great band, if we consider their early works.
4.0
I really like Coldplay. But I don't think I could listen to them for this many songs in a row again. I like what's-his-face's voice until four songs in and realize that without the music, just his vocals, I wouldn't know what song he was singing.
Actually kinda underrated, really nice production and surprisingly authentic. A great record.
Some great tunes. Probably their best album.
4.5
Not bad but hard to shake bad taste if High School
I've always liked Coldplay but it's never really been my favourite, so I've not listened to the album entirely before. There were some really good songs in here but I didn't really discover any songs I liked that much that I hadn't heard before. Favourite: God Put a Smile upon Your Face
sure. nostalgia may have impacted this rating
4 Good listening
3.5/5 Not a big Coldplay fan but still now the majority of the songs on this album. I wouldn’t buy the album but don’t mind hearing some of its songs once in a while. Some songs have been overplayed by the radio but I still enjoyed it. Favourite songs: - Politik - The scientist - Clocks
I assumed Coldplay would be U2 lite, but now I've listened to an album of theirs and have been proven false... sort of. I mean there are definitely qualities shared between the two including simple riffs and melodies. This however is softer and more laidback, in vain of Radiohead's melancholy acoustic songs. I also have to mention while they wear their influences on their sleeves, you know its Coldplay as they're immediately identifiable. The Scientist and Clocks are the biggest hits and the highlights, but there's also the title track, Daylight and Amsterdam as high quality album cuts. As a whole it may feel more of less the same songs, but it's a solid showing which never goes into a sour note.
Time for me to go to bat for these blokes. Short answer: I love it. Long answer: it baffles me how much people seem to hate Coldplay, due mostly to their ubiquity. Maybe Chris Martin is a wanker and that's why? Maybe the music is just too safe, too easy. As someone who listens first and foremost for sounds and melodies over lyrics, this kind of thing hits me just right. If you're someone who cares deeply about lyricism and meaning, maybe this doesn't scratch that itch. I wouldn't even know because that's not how I listen to stuff like this. Martin's got a great voice, the instrumentals are clean, emotional, sweeping. The top review on here lambasts the emotional appeal for being too wide-reaching and simplistic, such that people can graft their own meaning to the sounds. Is that necessarily a bad thing? All art speaks to the audience on a personal level, no matter how personal that art may be to the artist. If Chris Martin and the lads didn't pour too much specificity into this, and as a result more people love it, that doesn't disqualify it or make it bad art (at least in my opinion). I think there's a comparison to be made between Coldplay and Radiohead, that these guys are like radio-pop, watered down Radiohead. I don't care, I like how they sound. Not everything has to be challenging and experimental to be of value or of use. It takes all types. Favorite tracks: Clocks, The Scientist, Green Eyes, In My Place, Warning Sign, God Put a Smile on Your Face, Amsterdam. Album art: Some digital, triangulated art of a woman (?) being distorted? I don't know. Not really their strongest, but it's fine to look at. 4/5
Coldplay is a band I remember being popular as I was growing up, but I had never actually listened to one of their albums before. I went into this album not really expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised with what I heard. Each song has that trademark Coldplay song to it but I found the songs had more than enough variety to keep me engaged throughout the album. As I understand it, Coldplay are a somewhat different sounding group to what they were in 2002, but I really like this particular sound. It feels like an album that can appeal to anyone who at least doesn't have an extreme distaste for pop rock. I would recommend! FAVORITE SONGS: - The Scientist - Clocks - Green Eyes - A Rush of Blood to the Head - Amsterdam 4.25/5
I mean, its a great album, I just feel like its played out big time. 4/5
Lots of good ones!
Excellent album, haven't listened to coldplay, leasty of all early coldplay stuff. Great stuff.
For all of the grief they earned in their later years, Coldplay nails it with 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. This album can almost serve as their greatest hits, and that's fine. 4/5.
They've been since denigrated but at the time they were the next 'big thing'. Maybe when someone is overplayed the songs lose their punch? I don't like the tendency to slag things off when at one time you were all over them so I will say I liked them at the time and still find the songs enjoyable. There's plenty of other bands that have come and gone in the last 20 years so why not? Maybe people gravitate to the newest trendy bauble. The songs sound quite dated now but at the time they were great. It shows if you can develop a 'sound' at the time people will latch onto it and you can be huge for a while.
This was close to being a 5/5! Great album.
Ah look, I'm not going to do that thing on hating on Chris Martin as it's cool. Coldplay are better than for, they borderline brilliance. The Scientist is an amazing track if you've had a few more drinks than you should and feeling solomn. But that's what Coldplay are, they produce an incredible album after album that captures moods and eras. They don't break musical barriers and don't pretend to. They aren't lucky, they aren't capturing a zeitgeist, they are just an incredible bunch of songwriters, and one incredible singer. Just massively stuck up his own backside. But do you know what? Respect and Kudus to them for it
Pretty solid for the most part. I love the gloomy sound on their early albums. Amsterdam is an incredible song.
Clocks. Listen to the Trembling Hearts remix by Röyksopp if you haven't.
Never been a big Coldplay fan beyond liking the odd single over the years but this album is an exception, I loved this album. Objectively I'm not giving it a 5 but it'll definitely get a 4 from me. Politik, the title track, The Scientist, Amsterdam are all brilliant.
This is really good, it's been on my work music rotation playlist for ages. People (rightly) mock Coldplay for becoming very middle of the road, crowd-pleasing, and a bit bland, but this is before that happened when they still had some edge (even if it is a little blunt). The quality and consistency is really good throughout. Is it the most exciting? No. Is it very listenable and one of the best examples of dinner party pop rock? Yeah, it probably is. 4/5 for me.
Still have a weak spot for early Coldplay!
I hate that I liked this album as much as I did
Gute Musik, ruhige Tracks, entspannt
Very good album, still a great listen. Personally I'd rank X&Y a little higher.
20 years on, it's still good but not entirely gripping.
I love Coldplay. This album was definitely peak for them
Solid album. Clocks is a good song. I would listen to this again.
Listened to on 8/13/22 4.5/4 Favorite song: the scientist, Amsterdam I love Coldplay and this album was great - so easy to listen to, mellow but the songs hit different every time you listen
There’s a reason The Scientist is so popular
Great songs, but wasn’t pulled by any of the songs I didn’t know.
Listening to the album was like putting on your favorite, well-worn jacket: it’s familiar, warm, and reminds you of all the good memories you’ve made while wearing it. I really could hear my childhood while this was spinning: my parent’s CDs, adult contemporary radio from the early 2000s, and a million movie soundtracks. I really enjoyed hearing this again. I know people levy the (valid) criticisms that Coldplay is boring, inoffensive pop music, but this isn’t “Journey of a Lifetime” Coldplay, this is “height-of-their-powers” Coldplay. Lots of interesting things going on the first half of the album, and I really enjoyed listening to this again.
The album begins with the band’s more original sound of their brand of shoegazing. But then the second half has some great songwriting and vocals by Martin.
For a good portion of my life, I couldn't tell Coldplay from U2. 4/5 stars, glad it wasn't U2.
I wasn't expecting to like this much, but I must say there are a lot of memorable, well constructed songs on here, especially In My Place, Put a Smile on Your Face, Clocks. Not bad at all
Pressed play assuming it was going to be 3 stars, but I forgot how much I liked this album back in the day. Some classics on here. Shame the rest of their career is meh. 4/5
I vacillate between thinking they are one of the greatest bands of my time to thinking that they are completely devoid of meaning and have an overly simulated sound. It's wild, but I've never really settled that internal debate. I loved this album when it came out and I think I was completely awestruck. I still think it sounds great.
Coldplay toen het nog wat Indie was, en minder de commercial pop van nu. Dit album blijft sterk overeind
Coldplay isn't really for me, but I get why their older albums are popular. This one had some of their hits on it that I've heard before. Still, the singer's voice is too whiny and droning for my liking. It's a relaxing album overall though
Muy buen album
Old favourite
The Scientist + Clocks is a hell of a pop one-two punch. Best track: The Scientist
They fucking nailed it on this album, that sweet heady mix of pop melodies, sublime instrumentation and arrangements, earnest but not too earnest lyrics, and that little splash of art (see/hear the altered tuning on track 3). I'd give it 4.5 as it's that good, but will have to round down to 4 because, as much as I like it, it ain't no Beatles, Zep, or Hendrix yo.
I love this album. Most of the songs are compelling and the style really suits Chris Martin’s surprisingly nice vocal range & the instrumentation of the other coldplaying boys. A number of the songs had a maximal thing going on, which I thought was very well done in terms of how the different layers all fit together. At this point, Chris Martin’s lyrics are a lot more up front and clear than Coldplay’s later stuff and there’s a lot less of the trying-to-be-poetic-but-really-not nonsense that is more common in the later Coldplay work. Aside from clocks and the title track I throughly enjoyed every song. Parachutes, this album, and Viva la Vida are, in my mostly uneducated opinion, Coldplay’s golden era. Unfortunately, they did some reverse alchemy and turned that gold into coal and then when they got bored of making coal they turned the coal into hot steamy dog poo. Truly a legendary fall off. Also Parachutes betta
I've never really got the hate that Coldplay gets. I've listened to a few songs from them here and there and it isn't bad. This was a fine album but definitely has a certain vibe that one has to be in the mood for. For me it would have been improved significantly if the songs were shorter since I find many go on a tad too long. 3.5/5
Not really my style but shit dawg, they do they have a sound and they do it really well. Like this has everything I'd want from this kind of music if I was into it.
It's a good balance of the subtlety of Yellow and the anthemic nature of Viva la Vida, and probably the most like Britpop of their discography, with the best example "In My Place." I'm no music theorist, but the music sounds simple to me, yet it doesn't sound the least generic. I'd be able to identify songs like "Politik" and the piano of "The Scientist" even if you plugged in several filters. I'm a huge fan of Martin's slow falsetto. It really stands out, haunting and melancholic, and I frequently find myself comparing other artists to him. All the songs are good. There are a few weak ones, but they all have excellent production and never reuse ideas, staying consistent. My favorite parts are the trace shoegaze influence of cloudy instrumental that overwhelm you but undergo subtle transformations, sometimes burying the vocals to be nearly incoherent, best exemplified in "A Whisper." The use of reverb in the closer "Amsterdam" is a sign of the empty atmospheric work they'll follow in X&Y.
Pretty good. Would listen again. Shannah - 4/5 Conor - 3.5/5 Bill - 4/5 (3.8/5)
Good album, beautiful melodies, catchy riffs
I love the first half of the album; I think they deserve all the accolades they got for its combination of acoustic vs. electric guitar, piano, somber lyrics, and soft vocals. The Scientist is probably in my top 3 favorite songs of the 21st century. But the back half of the album felt a bit repetitive. I know it's the same style but it's like I ran out of gas with my desire for that sound. It's just missing something. I think with a bit more range or musical depth this album would be a 5.
Really nice. Love these quiet stripped down moments that I don't believe you get as often with present day Coldplay. Not saying it's better or worse but it is nice. I think Clocks is an important lesson for all musicians. No guitar on the track, even though there is a guitarist in the band. And it was their first massive hit. Rests are also in the musical toolbox.
slow sad, sad movie rainy day
Great album.
Better than I expected. Would listen again.
This is one of those albums with a distinct A and B side like singles used to have, with all the really good stuff front-loaded onto the A-side and the not so good stuff tucked away on the other. But the A-side *is* really good, enough so that I'll give it 4/5...
4.5 stars. Such a classic - before Chris Martin and co went off the deep end. Great melodies, great bass lines, and such sentiment. Less than perfect d/t a whisper... RIP quality Coldplay
Deeply unfashionable; but I really like it… maybe some sort of nostalgia at play!
good songs obviously, not really a fan of chris´s voice
Still Coldplay's best album. Strong songs. Non-stop. It is the What's The Story Morning Glory of the 00s (heard these songs perhaps too many times from everywhere).
Peak Coldplay in my opinion (though they haven't really done anything good after Viva La Vida). "Politik" is a great dramatic opener. I will never understand what people got out of "In My Place" though, I've always found the track pretty boring, so the fact that it was the lead single has always puzzled me, since the rest here is quality moody alt rock. I am not a massive fan of the band and very rarely put it in my rotation, but really liked their earlier output.
Early stuff was great
Goeie 2002 pop waar ik blij van word. Clocks, the scientist. twee toppers
This is a very strong album. Most of the songs are packed with beautiful stick-in-your-head melodies and are well produced and tastefully arranged. Coldplay have a penchant for grandiose sounding songs that make them sound like they would be at home in the arena rock venues and this album definitely have them sounding like the heir apparent to the U2 throne. An impressive sophomore effort from a band that clearly has superstardom in its sights. 4.5 🌟
So my siblings and I really, really loved Parachutes back in 99-00, so when this came out we received it with arms wide open ready to be marveled by it whether it was worth it or not, we loved In my Place which is a good feature of my youths soundtrack, we were impressed by the Pink Floydesque Politik (even though the lyrics are not as strong as Martin wants), and were brought down to melancholia by The Scientist, its Britpop guitar and impressionist video clip. We saw them live that same year, funny story with a storm, jumped gates, a spaced out guy and a stolen ticket), bought the CD and downloaded the b sides and all that, Coldplay was the band that was gonna save music, the new U2 (it was their turn to that title lol) Of course we heard the detractors and the points they made about how unoriginal the propose was, how it was an early Radiohead copy, how the sound bounced between British music eras without being too good at it, how it was corny and cheesy and of course gay (yup, homophobia has been always been there for the band) but we did not care. Now that I think about it at that same moment we were already leaving the band behind for more complex music but at the time it was very enjoyable, guess that’s what formative years are about. Now 20 years later it is still a good memory from my young self, yes, I see now the album is bloated and aims too high, I see Clocks as one of the laziest hits ever, I dislike “a Whisper” entirely, but I also see “The Scientist” as one of the greatest song to hear live, and “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face”, “Green Eyes” and “Amsterdam” as some of their greatest efforts and really good music overall. Yes the album is not nearly as good as I once thought it was, but it is a good record nevertheless, much better that their current stuff is at least. Don’t buy the vinyl, all the presses suck.
CD
Good soft rock album. Much less pop heavy than coldplays later albums, which is nice
2002, my first year at university. Oddly, I don't recall this album being played that much. Don't misunderstand me, In My Place, God Put a Smile on Your Face, The Scientist and Clocks (tracks 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the album, a warning sign?) were as ubiquitous as oxygen (they still are), but I hadn't sought to listen to the album. I accept that was partly prejudice against the hype, partly a sneer at Chris Martin's Bonoesque, narcissistic proselytism for somewhat ill-defined causes, partly a distanced yet justifiable disregard over their lyrical shortcomings. But whilst listening to this, I realised that I had really quite missed the point. I had ignored that Coldplay have a straightforward mission: vague, slightly sad yet very much hopeful singalong anthems for wimpy indie kids. As someone with touches of wimpy indie kid, I immediately got the appeal of the album when I actually bothered to tune in. It's a very easy album to embrace. Yes, that's because it's overtly populist in its ambitions, but that's not an a priori failing. It really just means the melodies are likeable. As for the lyrics, I had overlooked an obvious point about Coldplay: as a group following on from Oasis, the definitive British band of the 90s, they had graduated from the Noel Gallagher school of lyrics providing mood rather than meaning. Yes, we're not talking Dylan, but that's not the point of this. Would you prefer the Beatles if Keith Moon replaced Ringo? The album is fairly long, and threatens to stay until it begins to stink, but it avoids that mainly because, despite the singles all coming from the front, the later tracks are clearly not filler. More negatively, after a while there is the sense of inspirational-mix-for-a-5k, but what did you expect from Coldplay? Sexy boudoir numbers? A soundtrack to a drag race, whether cars or transvestites? Sidelong noodlings attempting to replicate the aura of Venus? If you accept this album on its own terms, you'll enjoy it so much more.
I am vaguely familiar with COLDPLAY having and listening to their debut album, PARACHUTES, but not their second album A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD. I do not consider myself a fan as I was initially disappointed with PARACHUTES overall. After listening to A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD, this album is very well done and pleasant to listen to, but it is not my cup of tea. COLDPLAY is musically competent, and CHRIS MARTIN sings well, but I need personality, dirt, grit, variation, and a host of other characteristics that for me make up a good song that appeals to me. Similar to me experience with NICK DRAKE whom I’ve gotten to like very much after I made my ranking for PINK MOON. This case I’m giving COLDPLAY the benefit of the doubt, because in the future I might “get it”. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, with COLDPLAY - A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD, their debut album is also listed: PARACHUTES (2000) Rate Artist: COLDPLAY (3.5) Rate Album (Year): A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD (UK 2002 Original) (4.0) Ranking of COLDPLAY - A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD songs No. Title Length Ranking 1. If I didn't get the Radiohead comparisons then, I sure do now. Good album.
We’ll composed and really beautiful
A gorgeous album, though I would rank Parachutes higher. The pristineness of the music is a strength of their music but also is a bit distracting, like I want to hear some dissonance every once in a while.
Coldplay peaked with the Brothers & Sisters and The Blue Room EPs. In terms of albums, I think their first 3 are strongest and I was definitely a fan of Coldplay in high school/college. Early Coldplay is Diet Radiohead with optimistic-based syrup content. Later Coldplay became its own thing, which is fine but I fell off after Viva La Vida. With that out of the way, I think Coldplay on these earlier albums were at their prime. Lyrically they are good, it's inoffensive and easy listening. If I didn't have loved these albums in my youth I may not rate this as high as I do. I do remember coming home from a long shift at 1AM after closing up the concession stand at a movie theatre, hearing Clocks on the radio the first time and I made me stop in my tracks, as a moody 16 year old it just did something for me. It's still not what I wanna listen to most of the time, but credit to where credit is due. I think the track "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is still good, but I really can't listen to much of this anymore, I'm kind of past it all. But, 4 since I can recognize that it is very successful at what it does.
Solid album with several great hits that I enjoyed all the way through. Though Coldplay can often sound similar song to song, their lyric game is so strong that I can overlook that
Definitely the best work by coldplay
Ok
Tres bon album de coldplay, avec plein de classiques quon a attendu des centaines de fois. Propablement leur plus connus . 4.5
Coldplay at their peak. Tight composition, and powerful lyrics
Solid album. Lots of good songs.
It feels like listening to the same track for half an hour, which is fine, as I quite like this sort of music.
Great album which sparks a sense of nostalgia. I know Coldplay get bad rap but this was one of my favourite albums to listen to.
Great album. Easily my favorite Coldplay album (although Parachutes is pretty good as well). The Scientist is my favorite song. 4/5
coldplay at their best.
Cool
Överraskande bra! Älskar hur gitarrerna låter och sångerna är välskrivna och intressanta.
Probably Coldplay's best album.
Really great album. Loved it.
Nice
Classic. The whiny dudes from the early 00s.
I've hated every Coldplay song that I've ever heard on the radio. Their non released stuff was good to excellent. So pleasantly surprised!
Bueno
8.5/10
**2000's** I was just a kid. All those alternative rock one hit wonders amuse me. Forget about that guy rapping about mom's spaghetti, we have songs about being numb, being here without you, being asleep in September, going wherever you will go, having to go and make things so complicated, and of course, crying when angels deserves to die. I have no idea how incredible the '90s were when it comes to alternative rock (aside from something about being a creep, I guess), but nonetheless I enjoyed the 2000's much. . . A couple of buildings from a big country just got destroyed and everyone was talking about it. . . And what's this song about... nobody saying it was easy? It's pretty boring. *2020's* "A Rush of Blood to the Head"? Sounds stressful. The fact that it came from a band that I did not care much about didn't hel- Oh boyyyyy! ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Okay. First of all, this is amazing. Coldplay is not as bad as I thought they were, lmao. My only issue is that the every single is on the first half. I've heard some other albums that are like that. Unsurprisingly, the first half is incredible, 5/5 in this case. But the second half? Usually hit-and-miss. Still, what a unique experience. . . I guess it's called "A Rush of Blood to the Head" because it can blow one's mind.
The Scientist isn't a sad song!
Un disco muy baladesco, pero con muchos puntos altos y populares, de los que mas escucho
A dark, brooding LP wrapped in layers of production. Probably the group's best effort alongside 'Viva La Vida'
Damn, what a start to this album - the 5 song combination of 'Politik', 'In My Place', 'God put...', 'The Scientist', and 'Clocks' is incredible, and shows Coldplay (at least this version of Coldplay) at their artistic and creative peak. Fortunately, while the remaining 6 tracks on the album don't hit quite as hard, they're well worth a listen, particularly the touching acoustic track 'Green Eyes'.
Lots of great memories listening to this one from college. 😊
Soulful, fun music to listen to. Deserving of the accolades and awards.
A Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay (2002) Looking at the title and cover art, one might expect that someone has found a vapid solution to the problem of “A Rush of Blood to the Head”, but one would prematurely be selling this album short. It’s really very good. The lyrics demonstrate a fondness for development and closure. They thoughtfully express the need to love and be loved. And not without an element of both humility and hope. But if you’re lonely, they could make you sad. So be careful. These are songs that penetrate to the soft parts of the soul. While compositional structures are generally colorful and predictable, with steady tempos and rhythmic variety, melodies frequently feature unexpected line endings—a real plus. Simple string arrangements provide a soothing background to a number of tracks. Chris Martin’s lead vocals are strong enough to deliver both the message and the music. Several of these songs could well find their way onto playlists for background while you work. “Don't ever say you're on your way down when God gave you style and gave you grace And put a smile upon your face” Yes. He does that. 4/5
I wanted to not sing along, but they're so.... bloody... NICE! Grrr. Coming in here with their good intentions and catchy tunes.
Daylight, Politik… very cool
Solid album through and through. Standout Tracks: Politik, God Put a Smile Upon Your Face. The Scientist, Clocks, A Rush of Blood to the Head
I think this was said about U2 or some other band (maybe it was Coldplay as well) but because they became so "meme-ified" and main stream, you forget they had to be good first to go big. Very surprised at how much I enjoyed the album, especially the tracks that I hadnt listened to before
Feels weird liking Coldplay so much after despising them in HS. I think that's the cost of listening to their later, overplayed successes. These initial albums make me understand why they got so big. I like this more than parachutes. Feels more than a 4, but not a five. I'll say 4+ and Coldplay can be thankful for that.
Really good, if a bit samey. Politik, the scientist, and the title track were stand outs for me. Kind of odd to listen to it just as their new album is released.
Coldplay always falls into an uncanny valley of "this is so boring that it slips back into enjoyable" like a dreamy drone of sorts. This album includes great tracks and overall is very listenable, but can get tired in one sitting.
I'm not mad about Coldplay but this is a really strong album. I'd listen again and would probably stretch to at least £4.99 in a charity shop. 3.7
Coldplay is kinda boring white person music, but this and parachutes are still great albums. But maybe I'm just a boring white person..
This is an album I’ve always heard singles from but never listened to all the way through. I’m glad I finally did because it’s a really good album. It definitely is different from parachutes and is more upbeat and uses piano/electric guitar more. Solid album from start to finish. Fav songs: scientist, clocks, god put a smile upon your face, politik
Another in the long list of bands who were very well-known during certain parts of my adult life yet I somehow missed entirely. I do remember the album cover -- it would've been a CD back then -- and how much I loved the artwork. Still do. I started listening to the album with a bit of concern that I'd have too many biases against them to really hear the music (I might be wrong, but this seems to be a band a lot people love to hate). It didn't seem to matter. I enjoyed the album and some of the tracks are particularly good. I was familiar with a few songs, probably from hearing them in public places, but I really hadn't heard most of these. I like the seeming simplicity of their songs that have more going on musically than meets the ear. I expected this album to be more straight-up pop music (there are those biases again!), yet I heard a little more darkness and layers in it. Good album.
I don’t necessarily love or not love Coldplay but as I’ve reviewed the other album(s) their music takes me back to high school era days very distinctly. Points for that
Dammit I don't care if it makes me a square I really like Coldplay, and this album has basically all their hits. I almost want to give it a 5, but I know deep down that that's outrageous.
1 of probably 2 actually really good Coldplay albums tbh
reminds me of my college days
Not my thing but I can appreciate it.
Faccio coming out: mi piacciono i Coldplay. Voto: 4.5
Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. good morning soundtrack
The last great album from this band. 'Chutes taught me that I should start opening my mail, looking at nutrition labels at the grocery and tucking my t-shirt into my jeans. But Rush of Blood taught me the only thing constant is change and nothing is perfect forever. Cracks started forming with The Scientist, Green Eyes and A Whisper and it became evident to me that tucking t-shirts into jeans is not comfortable and food tastes better when you don't look at nutrition labels. So I had to say goodbye...
The ending to Politik sets the tone for the rest of this beautiful album. The Scientist and Clocks back to back have no right being that good. A Whisper is the only track on the album that I don’t care for and would skip the next time I listen to. A Rush of Blood to the Head is haunting and another god-tier track. Coldplay has helped me get through some tough times during life and when I’m in the dumps, it’s unbeatable. For where I am in life now; I’d say it’s a great album and that’s what I’ll rate it as.
Can't believe I've never listened to this all the way through before. It's aged extremely well. It's quite soft edged, but has a lovely texture and layering to it. Obviously some of the songs i have heard 1000 times before becuase they were played to death as part of adverts or on the radio, so they have lost their impact, but "Politik" is a really strong way to start and album, a real statement of intent, and Amsterdam is a perfect way to end it as well. And having only heard the melody for "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from the Mark Ronson version, it was nice to hear the original, and just bask in its glory.
I'll forever love their first 3 albums before they took a much more commercial formula into the studio. Politik. Just wow.
Good album. Chris Martin is a twat/10.
I think it's easy to forget today how impactful this album was when it came out. It was the first piano-driven contemporary adult rock album to hit the mainstream in a long time. I think it's also easy today to mock Chris Martin for his past ties to kooky Gwyneth and his aging hipster brand. But truth is, he was helping to invent that brand at the time. His soulful, poetic lyrics are worlds ahead of what many other 25 year old pop stars write (yes, I'm looking at you, Tay Tay, but not just you!). The trance-synth sound of the band is just the chill groove a lot of people were looking for after having "survived" the turn of the millenium. Sure, there are a couple of clunkers on this album, but Clocks was an awakening anthem for it's time, and The Scientist and In My Place are prime examples of the genre this album helped to create/cement.
Really refreshing to hear mega-smash singles like “Clocks” outside of their cultural-dominance era to appreciate them for the great pop songs that they are. It starts off with the worst song (which could easily be cut) and there’s nothing quite as good as “Yellow,” but I was digging the understated production and better-than-I-remember songwriting. A really pleasant listen, and I mean that in a good way. Probably an uncool opinion. Who cares
Coldplay is huge, this album is good. They were still young and fresh.
Es uno de los mejores discos de Coldplay, tiene muchos de sus temas mas conocidos y clasicos, la instrumentacion y composicion es increible junto con las letras, mis canciones favoritas son obviamente The Scientist, In My Place, Clocks y A Rush of Blood to the Place (mi favorita de ellos) ps. Amsterdam tambien esta perra
Politik: Excellent In My Place: very good God put a smile upon your face: very good The scientist: amazing Clocks: excellent Daylight: very good Green eyes: very good Warning sign: excellent A whisper: good A rush of blood to the head: excellent Amsterdam: excellent 9/10
pretty solid medium rock sound. Have always liked Clocks.
Listened to before. Very chill.
Good album
Coldplay’s best album, a really good collection of songs
One of the great album of the naughties!
Real good. Classic.
When Coldplay were top of their game, they were pretty good. I’ll save my 5 five for Parachutes
First half good, second half bad. Gave me good mems of Glasto 2005 so it gets an extra star for that.
It’s hoot hour! Feed a bad sloth and you have to expect a good outcome, as they say. Pretty good and not grinding for a mainstream-y band. Takes me back to a trip home from Louth Races in TR’s car after I’d been bitten by a redback spider, tripping balls
This album is full of coldplay classics front to back.
Well done
Say what you want about Coldplay, their second studio album is fantastic. Ignoring the overplayed popular hits like The Scientist and Clocks, this album is just banger after banger. I am a Coldplay stan though so maybe i'm biased here. The first track Politik sets the tone and is a great opening. The closing track Amsterdam is one of my favourites, I love the crescendo at the end there. The weakest track IMO is A Whisper, but it's still great.
Forgot how beautiful this is.
Very chill, some great tracks. Easy to listen to, but not the most exciting sound.
Bem nostalgico, não tão bom assim...
Very good album, very emotional lyrics that get the job done.
Pretty enjoyable listen.
Wow, I'm really impressed. This is sort of like what Radiohead might have ended up doing if they had kept their The Bends-era sound. Occasionally it was a little poppy for my tastes, but if I did a PCA on this there's no way it would end up in the John Mayer cluster. Anyone who thinks it's uncool to like these guys is a moron. Best song: Daylight (although there are quite a few to choose from). Musically dense, and I'm a sucker for the combo of strings and loopy bass.
its fine, a few songs that really grab me (The Scientist, Clocks, GPASUYF) but otherwise above average background noise
Along with Adele and perhaps to a lesser degree, U2, Coldplay are one of those acts whose levels of adulation and megastardom perplex me. They’ve got some good songs, perhaps a handful of great ones, but for me at least, an almost total lack of dynamism. Songs like In My Place are nice enough, yet just seem a bit simple, dull and whiny to me. Despite all my negativity, I don’t hate them, I just don’t get them and this album is probably the one whose apparent popularity perplexes me most.
This Coldplay album sounds a lot like the one before it. It’s not bad, but not particularly great either just very middle of the road and inoffensive. It has a bit of nostalgia as a product of its time, but it’s not something I would go back to.
Not bad
I thought it would be whiny and it was, but I also didn’t hate it
It was quite pleasant all in all, but it really does feel like this album has a severe iron deficiency
The Scientist was pretty good but this just sounded like a worse version of The Bends by Radiohead
While Coldplay have definitely sold out and I get shivers every time their newer material rears its ugly head across the airwaves, their early work certainly has more than enough merit. This album is a perfect showcase of truly well done pop-rock of the era. Chris Martin has a fantastic ear for melody and he gets very creative with it on a couple of tracks here. You are basically doomed to have at least one of these songs stuck in your head for days after listening to the album. However, it's a tale of two albums. While the second half definitely has its moments, everything after Daylight pales in comparison, especially Green Eyes and A Whisper. It's not a slog to get through, but it does feel like having a hangover after a great night out. Favourite track: Politik
Better than a lot of 90s/Aughts Brit Bias stuff (that we've seen here or otherwise), so, for me, definitely a 3; the tougher question (for me) is whether I'm obliged to give it a (begrudging?) 4. I don't think I can quite go there, but I give this a solid 3. Musically, pretty interesting (chord changes, e.g.), singing is pretty decent (occasionally slightly annoying - but mostly good), a variety of musical moods, although maybe it goes a little too often to the 'let's go for epic' well? The clear standout song, for me, is "Clocks" -- I'm a sucker for the voice/piano/bass/rhythm combo every time.
I mean Coldplay is objectively good yes. They just aren't my favorite. If I had just gone through a bad breakup, I could see myself listening to this album on repeat, but alas, I am in a stable relationship.
I don’t hate this album, but it’s my third favorite of Coldplay’s three albums (Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, Viva La Vida). This is a very high three, but it had stiff competition with the rest of the band’s discography. Shame they quit after 2008.
I am ashamed to admit that it took me 2 full days to get through this album. I didn't even hate it! A shameful display of my attention span.
This album is of course best remembered for the excellent tribute video that WWE put out when Macho Man Randy Savage died in 2010, set to "The Scientist” Gets me every time
Not bad but not very memorable either. Could good songs and the rest was mediocre.
It's fine. A couple songs are good, but it get boring.
Coldplay har någonstans potentialen att vara ett riktigt bra band, men det är något irriterande över dem som håller dem tillbaka.
Growing up I enjoyed the scientist it gets stuck in my head from time to time. Going through the whole album however I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed a whisper and the self titled song. This was a much more enjoyable experience than I thought it would be
it's okay
#367 Coldplay get a bit of hard time, including from me, but their early stuff is generally decent. Feels less dreary than the debut though. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Listen before you die? ❌ Fave track(s): God Put a Smile Upon Your Face; Daylight Rating: 6/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not a fan at all of Coldplay but I am able to recognize a sincere record with classics like "The Scientist" and "Clocks". It's a simple sound record with a mellow energy. Feels like a person that is living but with a deep sadness burrowed within
Though most of the album sounds the same, the music is solid and I would listen to it again.
I’ll start writing interesting reviews when Coldplay starts releasing interesting music Favorite songs: clocks, the scientist, green eyes
Pretty good! It's Coldplay, kind of all sounds the same but about as inoffensive as you could really get.
mostly boring with a couple good songs
Yo qué hago si nunca he podido conectar ocn Coldplay, aunque tenga sus señas canciones. Eso sí, no me aburrió escuchsro esto como album. Pero creo que tienen mejores también.
The first few songs droned on to seemingly no end. Then the Scientist and Clocks came on back to back which are obvious bangers. Then the rest was meh. So it's a solid 3-star album.
It’s hard to be objective about Coldplay because their music absolutely ruled the airwaves in the 2000s. The sound is gentle throughout. The vocals are well mixed and easy to understand.
This was mid...nothing bad nothing great. They just make me feel mellow and almost like nothing at all. Which is good sometimes. Like meditating but not
I don't love or hate Coldplay. They're kind of a downer, but they're fine. And overall, this album was fine. I do like The Scientist, and In My Place and Clocks are pretty good too.
It's decent. Not their best but far, far from the worst they would be. 6/10
Nice, but not my type
That was a good Saturday morning sipping coffee listen, but it's too close to U2... I hate U2.
Sounds like Coldplay, no surprises.
Its exactly how you think its going to sound. I know its cool to hate Coldplay, and sure most of these songs are overplayed and kind of meh, but they are literally one of the least musically offensive bands of all time. Auditory white bread.
Early Coldplay wasn’t all that bad, there’s some good songs on here. Kinda basic in the end, misses a lot of flavour, especially Martin’s voice *yawn*
In My Place is an anthem and The Scientist is pretty great too. The first 5 songs are all pretty good. The title track is decent. Better than Parachutes. Not as boring.
very safe
sympa, classic Coldplay
Some good tracks (particularly the singles), but the album is also a little bland in places. It’s pleasant, if not that inspiring.
I know it is fashionable to dislike Coldplay, but I must admit I don't mind them. This album contains a couple of really good tracks, but most of the album is just average.
Ставлю 3. Всё чет на грустном вайбе, но сам альбом культовый конечно, треки очень настольгичные и ухо не режут. Но колдплей я просто не люблю
Decent. Knew some songs
Good album, but heard most of the songs too often already on the radio.
Coldplay's ok, I guess. Nothing mind-blowing. Maybe if Chris Martin didn't sound like such a whiny little so-and-so...3
I never used to like Coldplay, all songs sounded like Yellow to me. Viva La Vida was different, and unblocked my ears. Between Clocks and The Scientist this is certainly worth Al listen, and the rest is alright too.
I want to give this album a higher rating, but Coldplay is just too corporate and milquetoast to warrant anything better.
Great
I've never been a Coldplay fan as such, but I've never really got the hate for them either. Listening to this album (and The Scientist in particular) it’s easy to understand how they became huge.
Not a huge Coldplay guy but this was better than expected. Decent generic pop.
Nice album, but not quite
come back OG coldplay the kids miss you
I'm really not a Coldplay fan, but this is fine. The two most popular tracks ("The Scientist" and "Clocks") are the best songs on the album, but "In My Place" is up there too.
Not super impressed. A bit too melancholy for my taste.
Usual, expected Coldplay sound. It's airy, folky, early 2000s rocky. It's nice to listen to, but doesn't grab me like it seems to for others. I don't dislike it though.
i didnt hate this like i expected to. for the most part, its pretty straightforward pop rock but the song writing is good even most of the songs are pretty boring
There’s not much for me on this album other than the obvious winners (The Scientist remains undefeated and Clocks is good, of course). It’s not bad by any means but I just don’t connect with it in this phase of my life. I also really wish they tried some slightly more complex instrumentals- their hits always have that little something different from their usual patterns and that’s what takes them all the way to me. One thing I do have to give credit for is that the album has a very strong and coherent vibe you can’t help but fall into.
I like to rant about Coldplay. There's something about Chris Martin that gets on my nerves. His entire personality, that’s what it is. Although I must say he's quite a good comedic actor. But like Timberlake, I wish he'd stop making music and instead focus on comedy. It's not just how annoying Chris Martin is. It's Coldplay’s whole stadium-filling cringe fest, their collaborations with manufactured pop-singers, their shitty dance-music crossovers, and so much more that makes them so damn unlikeable. But years before they were outing CEO and HR execs’ affairs with cringe-inducing made-up songs, they came out with two half-decent albums. That's the part that I usually keep to myself. “Parachutes” was a good album. There, I said it. And parts of “A Rush of Blood to the Head” are decent too, even enjoyable. The first four songs to be specific. “Politik” is a great song, really great actually. The chorus is excellent. “In My Place” is cheesy, but enjoyable enough. “God Put a Smile upon Your Face” has a decent acoustic guitar riff and melody. “The Scientist” is another song I'll admit that I properly liked when it came out first, and revisiting, it mostly holds up. It's at the fifth song, less than halfway through the album, that things start to fall apart. “Clocks” is the first of that “new Coldplay” sound, and it’s not a good direction. It's a testament of just how annoying that song is to me, that I can't even begin to articulate why it annoys me so much. Doing so would just annoy me too much. The rest of the album is dull and uninteresting. The title track is the only remaining song that I remotely like. Otherwise, I've completely lost all interest. We haven't entered the peak Coldplay cringe era yet, but you can sense that it's not far away. They're not the only shitty band making shitty pop music, but they get my wrath for a reason. They started off so promisingly. Their first album, and the first half of this record showed us that they could actually write some decent songs. But then they seemed to make a conscious decision to sell-out and start making rubbish. So, I like to rant about Coldplay.
Again, a somewhat biased view here as I am not a Coldplay fan at all. Wasn't looking forward to this album, and didn't enjoy both listens through tbh. It wasn't as bad as expected though, still listenable, but I just really can't see what it is that people seem to think makes them such passive stars. A must hear album? Not sure.
It’s difficult to rate this without thinking about what came next for them, I.e. music by numbers for people who don’t like music. Having said that, the strong tunes on this are very good, not musically innovative but they definitely hit a spot and that’s not as easy as people would like to believe. It was heading for 4/5 from me but it really tails off towards the latter third. As Super Hans said ‘you can’t trust people, people listen to Coldplay and voted for the Nazis’ IYKYK.
I was pretty apathetic about Coldplay growing up and I am still apathetic about Coldplay at 30 ig!!!! Nothing bad to say, nothing spectacular either. Fav song: Clocks
I expected it to be boring and too radio-friendly but it was moody and a couple of the songs crushed my heart, so good job lads favourite song: The Scientist
This album was pretty enjoyable. I mean, Coldplay is Coldplay, but they had a surprising amount of range with their vibe in this album. I'm impressed but it's obvious all the stuff I had heard off this album was their hits, so that's kinda all I need to say on the subject matter. Favorite track on the album was Green Eyes. I appreciated The Scientist and Clocks but this song really felt the most heartfelt.

All a bit meh
If this isn't Coldplay's best album, it's at least their most consistent. There are no weak songs here, and there's nice variety between heavier moments and the lighter acoustic songs that dominated their debut. "The Scientist" is the standout, with its haunting piano and climax. My unpopular opinion is that "Clocks" is a bit of a dud; "Politik," "In My Place," "Green Eyes," and the title track are all better. But even those songs are just pretty good, and that's this album's big problem. As much as I enjoy listening to it, it almost never wows me and I would not miss it if I never heard it again. I know Coldplay's reputation is that they're kind of milquetoast, and I think that's unfair because they've written beautiful melodies and shown a desire to explore new sounds over their career. But the highs on this album are just not high enough.
This wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Still meh though.
daora
At the time, Coldplay were sneered at as Radiohead copyists - and it's true, you can see exactly where the influences come in. Daylight is very clearly a Pyramid Song copy, and you can hear No Surprises, Karma Police, High and Dry etc throughout the album. On the other hand - those are all really good songs, and so unsurprisingly, the ripoffs are enjoyable. It's a bit saccharine, a bit lacking in bite, but you can totally see why they got huge. It's meaningful music, stripped of edge for a mainstream audience, but you can see why it worked. Somewhere on the 3/4 boundary. Lets stick with 3.
give me love, give me faith. nobody said it was extraordinary.
An easy twenty years since I last heard this, and it’s still a decent album. Reminds me of long trips in my Mum’s car. Favourite track: A Whisper
This is a very enjoyable listen and reminds of when they were kind of the biggest band in the world but not something I return to often
bom instrumental no começo clocks boa bem mais dark e eery do que eu imaginava folk-y vou dar um 3
3 good songs but don’t ever intend to seek this album out to listen to.
In context of the time, it wasn't bad at all, I think they are for a certain group who don't dig to deep into music, for people who like this, music is a thing that happens on the side, and thats ok for some I guess.
People love to hate Coldplay. I thought this was pleasant. Clocks is a beautiful song, I'll say it!! Sue me!!!
boo hoo
