Reviews (page 5 of 14)
A good album, and brings back a wave of nostalgia. "Clocks" and "The Scientist" were massively overplayed, which is why I think this album gets the hate it does. Creditbwhere it's due, though. 4/5
honestly, a very beautiful album. it’s only real weak spot is the starting deterioration into the pretty bland band coldplay is today, foreseeable in "clocks". besides that, "a rush of blood to the head" and "parachutes" would be inarguable all-timers, if we could ignore what happens after.
Brings back a lot of memories
Parts of the latter half underwhelm, but the first half is outstanding stuff. Quite easily their best album. Favorite track: The Scientist
It was really good, love the scientist and clocks, but others i didn't know. Really calm and chill so good if you want some mellow music to work or before sleep
Really enjoyed most of the songs, only a couple fell kind of flat for me.
This album from front to back is like going through a solid day of life. Mostly ups and a few downs but great emotions all around.
I could have sworn Clocks came out earlier than this. I’m not a huge Coldplay fan overall, but I did (and still do) love this album. There is an urgency here that is lacking on much of their other output.
Ok I just wanna say I don’t really get the Coldplay/radiohead comparison their music isn’t quite similar enough for it to make sense to me how much people talk about it. Anyways I honestly liked this a lot! Some of the songs were super overplayed when I was little and I was expecting to not want to hear them again but it ended up being kind of nostalgic. I’m not a huge fan of the vocals but the actual melodies and stuff are cool. Fav songs: politik, clocks, daylight
can't deny og coldplay are good at what they do
Slow but actually pretty good
This is a good album - and not just the hits, which have gotten repetitive anyway, but songs like daylight and a rush of blood to the head, which are fresh and original and remind you the hits are no flukes.
Coldplay before they were super big. Slower pacing, and every song feels more impactful.
I was sure this was my 1st listen to a Coldplay album yet a couple of the non single seemed familiar to me. This may have been something of a sweet spot for Coldplay - arena rock status unlocked yet not at the point in their career where they felt the need to bring out the kiss cam.
As much as I along with main people love to hate on Coldplay and what they’ve become, this is a really good album. Solidly crafted tunes, if slightly one dimensional, but very listenable throughout. Took me back to an era when Coldplay were, if not cool, then perfectly acceptable.
Politik // In My Place // God Put a Smile upon Your Face // The Scientist // Clocks // Green Eyes // Warning Sign // Amsterdam 4.5/5
Clocks was a huge part of my 8th grade experience (it seemed like half of our grade - myself included - learned to play this on the piano), so I know I've heard this full album before, but I had very little memory of it. I'm not a huge fan of the newer Coldplay that I've heard, but I enjoyed listening to this and might bring old Coldplay back into my own library.
Quite a few timeless classics. Really enjoyed this one.
Coldplay were good once. (3.5 rounded up)
I’m a Coldplay fan but mostly in passing. I like their hits but had never really listened to a whole album. This was good throughout. Hits are still good and the secondary songs can also stand on their own. Solid album.
Solid early cold play album
This is a hard album to write about, because what are you meant to say? It's Coldplay, arguably one of the most popular and currently influential bands, and probably their best album. This album tugs on the emotional cords really well, and while a lot of that may be attributed to the melancholy use of piano, Martin's quivery, falsetto voice adds onto this feeling of sadness you may feel when listening to it. Overall, a good album from a good, albeit a touch overrated band, a solid 8.5/10.
genuinely like very good i wasn't expecting to like it as much as i did!!! shout out the scientist
Classic
Too bad I bring so much cultural baggage to this listen, because it’s actually pretty great pop music.
I went into this not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised, good songs, well written, highlight is the scientist. Did feel some songs sounded the same
A little more edge than "Parachutes", if I'm remembering their previous album correctly. Both have their moments, however. There's still room for heart here too. "The Scientist" and the iconic piano-filled "Clocks" immediately come to mind. A sonically pleasing album to listen to, if anything. Don't have a whole lot of qualms here.
This album and its tracks were absolutely inescapable in my younger years. And I didn’t dislike Coldplay, but in my mind, they were always more of a bloated Brit pop mega band that made music for the masses. I was more discerning in my tastes (or at least that’s what teenage me told myself). Coming back to this now, though, I feel conflicted. On one hand, the music is objectively good. It’s catchy, well-crafted, and you can hear exactly why millions of people connected with it. Tracks like Politik and The Scientist still hold up and still live up to the hype. And there’s a beauty in that “let’s all pack into an arena, hold hands, and sing along to these soaring tracks.” Like a shared catharsis. Church for the non religious masses. But flip the coin, and it’s harder to appreciate the art. Clocks will forever sound like the background music of a T Mobile commercial to me. Warning Sign is so bland and inoffensive that I forgot I was listening to anything at all. It starts to feel less like I’m appreciating Coldplay the band and more like I’m being spoon fed Coldplay the brand. Safe, polished, built to sell out arenas without offending anyone. It really is a coin-flip kind of album. Sometimes I hear the brilliance, sometimes I hear the muzak. The blurry line between art and product is baked right into the record. And while I don’t think I’ll ever love Coldplay the way some people do, I can’t deny the craftsmanship on display here. 4/5 Highlights: Politik The Scientist Clocks Green Eyes Amsterdam
It's a classic, and a part of my childhood. On relistening, I don't think it aged that well, and it feels (too) light for me now. That said, I do know the impression it left on me as a teenager, and the starting point it meant for my exploration of music. So a rating is a torn thing here.
Coldplay, A Rush of Blood to the Head ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Okay, they deserved their millions before they became a slightly better RHCP kind of band (recording the same thing endlessly) Solid rockers, some good downtempo numbers. Is it their best? I'd say so. Would I buy it? I'd buy it over any post-Achtung U2 album. It's got some compelling emotional songs and let's face it Chris Martin is the furthest thing from a problematic rock star so that gives this band enormous appeal just on its non-threatening credentials. Can we call this kinda post-Brit-pop? It's listenable but doesn't pack the long term punch of a Rolling Stones, Beatles, Who, Led Zeppelin album, or the sneer and edge of those 90s Verve-type rascals. And honestly, a postpunk contemporary like The Horrors I'd go pay to see, but Coldplay? Unadulterated Mom Rock. Eh.
I love this album. I havent followed Coldplay much since maybe 2011, but this album and the two that followed, X&Y and Viva La Vida, mean a lot to me. The Scientist is one of my favorite songs of theirs and a great song in general. This was a nice nostalgia listen.
Solid album, favorite from Coldplay. Lots of good memories with Clocks
Wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. Got some serious bangers in here honestly. Knew about half of them off by heart. Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song-god put a smile on my face Least fav- a whisper
I will say, I only recognize Cold Play from the songs Yellow and Viva La Vida, so it was nice to hear their other songs. Admittedly, I did fall asleep after Clocks played, so perhaps it was a bit boring to for my taste. But still good to sleep to I suppose haha.
This album feels more mature and sophisticated than the other one we had, tho I'd have to listen more closely to figure out why. They're the kind of group I like in moderation, but they get so much radio play when a new single drops that I think it turns me off. Anyway, I enjoyed the chance to spend time with this album.
My goodness Chris Martin has an ear for huge radio hooks, doesn’t he? If you squint real hard, it almost sounds like Wings with an Abbey-Road-level Paul at the helm. Not a skippable track here. There's nothing groundbreaking -- they're not doing anything U2 or a handful of other bands haven't done before -- but A Rush Of Blood To The Head is more inspiration than imitation in the end. From this point on Coldplay will more or less just try to imitate themselves (to varying degrees of effect,) but they earned their bonafides on this one.
Pretty good, the prime times of coldplay
Otro album de mi adolescencia 2002. Me ha llevado de vuelta a aquellos años y a sentirme igual - no se si eso es bueno - . (4) the memories
Early doors: Not a Coldplay fan. Having said that, Politik, In My Place, God Put A Smile On Your Face, The Scientist, and Clocks. Wow. an absolutely stunning run. Some of the lyrics are overwrought, or just noises (lots of na-nas on GPASOYF), but it is Chris Martin's style. Knocking a star off because the last few songs are rotten. Shame they now focus on joyous, millennial, anthemic, colourful trash.
Nice little Cold Play album. The one that started their success?
Ahh, nostalgia. It's not Parachutes but it's still good.
He may partake in an occasional apple turnover, but he did know how to make a cracking record back in his day
top 2 coldplay album
I’ll give this one props. Better than I had expected.
Classic Coldplay. I consider Parachutes a better album, but this is a solid album in its own right.
We've had "Parachutes" already, I wonder how far into the Coldplay discography we're going to get. If I was making the list I'd put Viva La Vida on there and call it done. I've listened to some of the songs on this album tens or hundreds of times, but I might not have ever done it back to front. "Politik" was a good start but nothing special in the world of Coldplay. The guitar line at the beginning of "In My Place" is so iconic. It gives me some nostalgic chills. The song isn't one of the greatest ever written, but it is really good. It's one of those tracks that is etched into my memory of a period of time. "God Put a Smile upon Your Face" is another OK Coldplay song. "The Scientist" has to be one of the most songs they ever wrote. It has 2.5 billion listens on Spotify, and that's just one platform which has been around for half of this album's lifetime. This song has almost certainly been played more times than we have people on earth. The piano part on "Clocks" is another little Coldplay bit that has been carved right into the brains of hundreds of millions of people. Amazing song. "Daylight" was a little boring for me. I like "Warning Sign". I really like the album cover, and the animated version on the Spotify album page is cool. It is hard to rate albums filled with songs that have been played around me literally thousands of times. I have to separate my appreciation for the music from how played out it is. I can only hear Chris Martin's voice so many times in one life, and I may already be past that point. Outside of the three big hits it was a little boring, and I am rating the entire album, so it doesn't quite make it to the eight/nine territory. 7/10
Another Coldplay, another album I'm very familiar with! Nostalgia heavy but I'm pretty sure it's enjoyable independent of that too.
Played this one too often, know it too well. Find it a bit whiny now
Неплохо
cok üzgünüm ama iyi albüm..
I hate Coldplay. I love this album.
Nice rhythms, some classics, enjoyable
Just listen to this one the other day, literally yesterday. It was pretty decent, there’s a few tracks I liked, but they debut album is significantly better. I think three out of five is fair, I love the scientist and clocks.
Sehr gutes Album mit einigen Iconischen Lidern
Better than remembered 7/10
Nice
liked it a lot
good
I consider myself to be pretty open-minded with respect to music, but like of us, I have my biases and Coldplay was among them. I didn’t think I liked them, but this album made me realize that I may have been prematurely dismissive. After several listens of A Rush of Blood to the Head, I’m still not sure I love the band, but there were several great songs here that grabbed my attention. The opening track “Politik” was a great way to start an album, both instrumentally and lyrically. Similarly, the piano and voice work from Martin on “The Scientist”, is gorgeous. Clocks I’d already heard many times, but as is often is the case, the song had greater resonance when surrounded by the rest of the material in the album. “Daylight” and several other tracks with the guitar plays a greater role in the soundscape, reminds me a little of Floyd—a good thing. So, what isn’t to like? To my ear, the album, like many of the Coldplay songs I’ve heard, play it safe. I realize that this was likely intended by the band, but it would be nice to see them push some boundaries. Another album I’d give 3.5*, but perhaps I’ll bump it up because it changed my preconceived notions of a band that many people love?
I love this album. It’s much more polished than Parachutes and infinitely less pretentious than X&Y. I enjoy the mellow vibe on here, which stays just a fraction away from being bland and boring. Really good in a way that Coldplay never will be again.
Pleasant to listen to, thanks to the calm singing cutting through the relatively energetic instrumentals. The songs carry some meaning, despite the light amount of lyrics. The second and third videos add to their songs. Being roughly about inevitable death and irreversible time respectively.
I didn’t expect to be floored with nostalgia while listening to this one, but I most certainly was. A solid peaceful album. Coldplay might have their heads up their own asses now, but their meteoric rise made perfect sense.
Fuck. I guess there is a reason people like Coldplay. As much as I want to be a hater, this was pretty good. I won’t admit to liking it, but it was good.
I don't care if this is the nostalgia talking, this is Coldplay's best album. It's cool to hate on them, and their newer music does feel kind of try-hard, but this is them at their best. Green Eyes, God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, The Scientist, Clocks, all of it just hits perfectly.
Mopey but a good mope
Just because you heard it way too many times doesn't mean it's no good. You just need a break from it for about 10 years. Maybe 20. Then you can appreciate it.
Still love some old Coldplay. The best songs here are great and the others are a bit meh by comparison.
I was a sophomore in high school. I was into hardcore punk and metal. I had heard the song Yellow at the grocery store. Coldplay was corny. I couldn't have told you a new Coldplay album came out, but I do remember hearing The Scientist and being like hey these blokes might be ok. It wasn't til X&Y, and me growing up a little more, that I would consider myself a full fledged Coldplay fan. I'll save that review for another day. But looking back they had a hell of a streak with their first three albums. I think Rush of Blood might be my least favorite of the three but I do believe it deserves to be on this list. I mean its accolades speak for themselves. But yeah. Solid. In My Place and Warning Sign are my faves.
Before invasive cameras and colorful wristbands. Before thousands of people with emotional problems go to concerts just to take blurry selfies, back in 2002 there was a great band, with two great albums, that should have split up that year. Although some are reluctant to say it, songs like "The Scientist" and "Clocks" are classics of the 2000s.
Almost better than their debut, which already set a high bar.
The thing about this album is that it sounds like a band at their absolute Platonic ideal of what they were best at, without being too self aware of who they are. A long way of saying it sounds like Coldplay where the band doesn’t realize that they’re Coldplay, the giant band. Almost a 5 star album. Zero bad songs. Just a little too vanilla to be a 5 star.
Rating: 4.2 I used to fall asleep to this album semi-regularly when I was younger, so I never realized how much interesting stuff was in the latter half of the album. There’s like a weird Red House Painters song and another discordant one that sounds nothing like anything else they’ve ever made. I mean, it’s Coldplay so there’s an embarrassing earnestness to everything they do but I do appreciate them taking semi-risks with their sound before they dove full-on into commercial slop.
Can’t hate. Very good album, no duds
Fantastic follow up album! before they got all weird and started dressing like they lived in Communist China.
Solid album!
This is arguably their finest album. It's a nice, easy listen, great vocals. The reality is Coldplay is just that, nice, easy, comfortable. There is no edge, no soul to me.
Franchement pas grand chose à dire, avec parachute mon album favori de Coldplay
Random thoughts: * I own this one on CD. * This album was huge when it came out. Clocks was everywhere. At least that's the track I remember the most from when this was popular. * The first 6 tracks are excellent. The remainder of the tracks are good but not quite at the level of those first 6. * I'd probably pick "God Put a Smile upon Your Face" as my favorite track but also really like "The Scientist" as it has been used a few times in film and commercials that have really resonated with me. * There is a melancholy in this album that kind of runs just underneath the surface. It's not totally a downer like Radiohead albums but has a gravitas due to that sad feeling just out of reach. * Was this peak Coldplay? They are so ubiquitous that they might be a bit underrated now.
A favourite back in the day. Bares repeating
Uplifting. One of Chris Martin's gems.
Probably the best Coldplay album. Politik through to daylight is an insane run of songs. Second half definitely has a step down in quality but Whisper and Warning sign are great songs. Don’t let the cool kids tell you Coldplay suck.
Some good deeper cuts on this album I had never considered.
I'd call it the good Coldplay album but I honestly like Viva la Vida too. This is the better one of those two though. It's still melodramatic, but the hooks are so good and The Scientist, Rush of Blood to the Head, and In My Place still hold up as individually great tracks.
4/
A bit tired of the hits, but still think this is quite great. 4.5 stars
Solid album. I've always been a fan of Coldplay's early albums.
This was an insane rush of nostalgia but simply not enough cohesion to carry it to a 5
Ugh this album is so good. Coldplay def has a stigma associated with it given how "mainstream" it was in its time. But the album aged really well, the songs don't feel tired at all. I bet people will "rediscover" this as time goes on. I want it to be cool to like Coldplay again!
Low 4 for me. The familiarity of the singles makes the album pretty meh—a 3, but the good songs are really good. “God Put A Smile…” & “Daylight”. Also when that guitar comes in on “AROBTTH”, the song becomes unboring.
Some songs are good but others just don't keep up with that ones.
It has that Coldplay sound, but it's still good.
I like the album. Thought it got a little stale but the last two songs are a very good finish.
Goddamnit, I unfortunatly really liked this album
It has good songs
Not for me, but solid album.
Classic Coldplay, great vibes.
A beautiful and melodic journey, full of big (and overplayed) anthems with a timeless stamp. Gets way too much hate in a lot of internet music spheres (like this one). Best song: Amsterdam Worst song: A Whisper Cover check: I guess he got a really big rush of blood to his head that it exploded.
Damn it, I like this. The melodies sound effortless, but the emotion is super sharp. There’s a maturity to it that caught me off guard. Feels adjacent to Travis (the band, not me), but more cinematic. Definitely ate some humble pie while listening. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions: - In My Place - The Scientist - Clocks - Green Eyes
Music for sophisticated white women with butterfly tattoos or something like that. It's like Foo Fighters on ritalin, very mellow.
My favorite coldplay album! I know it's really popular to dunk on them for being radiohead clones or what have you, but you can't deny that this is some great arena rock.
I listened to this album in full recently. I seem to remember preferring Parachutes (2000), but I saved Politik, In My Place, Green Eyes, and Warning Sign. This album has some huge, culturally defining songs!
Strong first half
It’s not Muzak, it was good for its time. People just forgot how to appreciate it. It’s not for everyone that’s for sure but to call it soulless or generic, that’s just plain wrong. 3.5
There's a bunch of great songs surrounded by really boring songs
I really love Coldplay, unashamed of that. I don't think this is their absolute best work, but it's pretty far up there and it's got one of my favorite of their songs on it. Great pull for today.
I've said it before and I'll say it here. I don't care if it's not cool, I like the early Coldplay albums. I like this one.
Coldplay is bubblegum music, but this album is grape flavoured bubble gum. I like grape flavoured bubble gum
Great Coldplay album, and also a great album in general. Some great songs and nothing really that I disliked.
tidiga coldplay är ganska bra. innan det bara blev skit av 'et
7/10
Excellent pop rock from the 00s. The Scientist played everywhere, but it's one of the few songs I'm not annoyed about. I'm not a big fan of Coldplay's newer stuff, but this record proves the band are some incredible songwriters.
The booming start brought back great memories. But it faded into the background. I want to give it a 3.5 but rounding up for nostalgia's sake.
Didn’t like it at the time. Better now!
Great album, I'm not sure why everyone turned on Coldplay really. The Scientist is beautiful.
4/5
Always been a low key coldplay fan. Easy listening. The album is great all the way through
One of the two Coldplay that are actually good.
This was an enjoyable listen. I'm not a big Coldplay fan, but I liked this album.
"The Scientist" is a great song. I like Coldplay well enough. Some monotony on this album (as in their general music overall) but I enjoyed it well enough to get it to four stars. Will I revisit Coldplay with any frequency? No, but it was pleasant Sunday morning listen.
Yeah OK fine, I think I'm ready to admit that I'm a fan of early Coldplay. Getting 'Parachutes' on this list a month or so ago made me ponder that reality, but this album solidified it. Granted, most of that comes from the nostalgic feelings I get listening to "Clocks" - that song was absolutely massive in the late 2000s AKA my high school years - but the album as a whole is really well constructed, making for a fun, introspective, and somewhat soothing listen. Also the production quality is great.
I find these first couple Coldplay albums very soothing. The vibe is mellow and the songs are melodic. The production is fantastic — really polished and well-balanced. The songwriting is excellent too. There are a handful of classic tracks here and plenty of strong album cuts. Excellent album all around.
Best Coldplay
Did not expect to like it
I've always really liked Coldplay so this has a bit of bias going in. I feel like there is a lot of raw emotion coupled with simple and impactful melodies as well as excellent lyrics. High high high 4.
It is so funny to think that Coldplay used to get clowned so hard back in the 2000s when I was in high school, because they do make some incredible music. A few surprise songs on here that I knew but not the name In My Place and the Scientist. And Clocks is a top song and you are a liar if you say otherwise. Much like their first album this is just incredibly easy listening music that just lifts the mood. Doesn't quite do enough for a 5 but this is a very high 4
This album has some of my favorite Coldplay songs in Politik and God Put a Smile Upon Your Face. Glad we get the first two albums by them because after that the albums start to go by the wayside. In My Place, The Scientist, and Clocks are all radio hits we grew up with and if I didn't hear them so much this would be a very different review. Damn forgot how great the title track was too. This is definitely the best Coldplay album out there imo. I'm incredibly close to giving it a 5 but there were just some parts that lagged for me. Insanely high 4.
Not my favourite Coldplay album, but some decent tracks
Mi rola favorita de Coldplay viene en este disco! Green Eyes :D
Most of the album was a little "meh" for me, but the incredible piano from Clocks carries it.
Very good but not quite a classic.
Fantastic album with some excellent tracks!
Pretty solid album, some absolute bangers, not sure I'd go out of my way to listen again but overall pretty good
I don’t love Coldplay but really like this album
Pretty good stuff here. Has some Radiohead vibes on a few of the tracks, then there are the stand out Coldplay hits.
Thsibis really good
amazing album
A long-time favourite, and the best Coldplay record by a mile. The Scientist and Clocks are a dazzling one-two punch of pop songwriting, but In My Place might be better than either, in spite of (or thanks to?) its Ride apery. Green Eyes and Warning Sign are staples of eighth-grade heartache; the title track is a staple of present-day heartache. Amsterdam reminds me of R.E.M.'s Find the River as a pained, earnest epilogue. "Start as you mean to go on." :'-)
5/7/25. 2000s classic for sure, and for me will always have space in my head as a life soundtrack. Album flows really well from start to end. The Scientist will always be a favorite.
Solid. Nice to have in the background.
Coldplay was inescapable there for a while. But I never intentionally listened to them. They’re good. The U2 influence is very clear (sometimes too much) — they’re like a happy version of The Verve, but better. This is really good though. I’ll listen to it again. A 4.
This was probably incredible in 2002, but now I'm tired of Coldplay. Not really their fault. Still a good album overall.
Pretty great tbh
No hate I actually love this album there's some really dark/ moody feeling songs
Y started to feel boring but A Rush Of Blood To The Head bring it up, the last 2 songs sound amazing
Classic, clocks is so good but a rush of blood to the head is underappreciated. Really captures a comforting feeling of yearning.
Obviously influential, cool album. I like how the pain and longing of the music just washes over you. My only issue is that Clocks is so much better than all the other songs that I only want to listen to that.
This album brings me back to where and who I was when it came out, and it has been with me in some capacity all throughout my adulthood. Whether is was a breakup or times when I felt free and on top of the world driving with the windows down, or when I just wanted to listen to beautiful composition, this album has always been there. I have never seen them live, but just last night, my wife told me they'd be in my town soon. I think I'll go.
No. 312/1001 Politik 3/5 In My Place 4/5 God Put A Smile Upon Your Face 4/5 The Scientist 4/5 Clocks 5/5 Daylight 3/5 Green Eyes 4/5 Warning Sign 3/5 A Whisper 4/5 A Rush of Blood to the Head 4/5 Amsterdam 3/5 Average: 3,73 Nothing earth shattering, but a really enjoyable listen with great songs.
The Blood, I rushed it
I really coming into this have no set view on Coldplay, I bought and heard the first album thought it was alright then the singles for presume this album just were a bit sort of anodyne to me at the time and have been even more so since and so I have never gone anywhere near them since. I know it’s a case of everyone hates them but they also have silly number of listens on places like Spotify, which as we are sheep isn’t that big a deal. Listening to this today I can see both sides have a valid argument, daylight and green eyes have just been playing as I write this and it’s just like their media image, a bit boring really, pleasant but self indulgent music that isn’t quiet rock. But even these have a little bit of earnest catchiness seeping into them, they really are thinking about the song and it’s structure and the better songs, the singles? I really have been under a rock where Coldplay are concerned are well crafted pieces of music. Maybe that’s the issue it’s a well crafted machine with little to no risk, like driving a well made but safe car, takes the road well but gives little in the way of a thrill, that smooth ride, which is what most people want from a car, and maybe music too. I guess it’s a good album and if was forced to listen to continuously for a while I would probably end up saying I really like it, but would I ever be exhilarated by it? So how to rate, never going to be a fan but I don’t think it’s shit, is it meh or is it good - today I would have to say I think this is a good album 3.5 Stars, if I could. But yes can see why there is the hate, they don’t credit or deserve to be as big as the numbers suggest they are, but they wouldn’t be the 1st and definitely aren’t the last.
Surprisingly liked this, given my general thoughts are that Coldplay are very white bread. Some bangers here and I'm now getting a bit of a grasp on why they're so popular
I'm going to rant a bit because I'm unable to sleep and for some reason feel compelled to. This album is way better than it looked - and honestly... songwriting is fine, but what jumped out was ebow, delay tomfoolery, stuff that is out there by slick pop standards. It's safe music at surface level, but it got my attention - it felt like it got better towards the end and sounded more like a band. :) Happy to say this site gave music I wrote off a second try! :)
das war doch mal wieder was, immer wieder hörbar
Listens: 4 or 5 Standout tracks: In My Place, The Scientist, A Rush Of Blood To The Head. Added to Library: TRUE And let's be honest, even with all the hate for the band, Clocks is also wildly catchy. ... A second Cold Play album on the 1001 albums list eh? And hearing them both within a month or so of each other... Ok. Anyways, not as good as Parachutes, but still some good tracks. It's crazy how many of the songs I have absorbed through osmosis over the past 20 plus years, despite never once seeking out and listening to the band on my own accord. Quite the feat. I seem to have a thing for adult alternative rock music.
Good Album. Clocks is a classic!
Not bad, despite the whineness
Have always been a bit disconnected from Coldplay but Jess loves this album and listening to some songs with her made me appreciate it more! It is a pretty rousing and classic collection of pop rock and piano ballads!
I find music criticism so difficult. Like I think this is not cool or particularly interesting but I like listening to it. I feel like this could fluctuate between a 2 and a 4 depending on my mood. My mood today: good!
Solid pop rock album that flows nicely.
4.25
Some mega hits on an overall timeless album.
Nice album, made me think
Bangers and bops aplenty, nothing hugely amazing but good fun to listen to.
what a banger album, maybe not as good as parachutes imo, but still amazing.
Coldplay overrated but not by too much imo. Good stuff esp Clocks
I actually liked it. I was a little apprehensive at first because it was coldplay. Easy listen with nice vocals with some interesting instrumentals. The scientist is a banger of course. 7/10
Definitely preferred the first half of the album to the second. Lots of nostalgia for this one, as I bought it with my own money when I was a kid. The Scientist is best song on the album.
Great listen—wouldn’t expect less from Coldplay. Timely listen as I will be going to see them live this weekend :)
Always liked Coldplay the guitar band better than Coldplay the worldmusicpopU2-light band. Saw them touring this record at the 1300 capacity venue Rockefeller in Oslo, and thought they were a treat.
One thing about me is that I'm always partial to a little early-Coldplay album. I feel like they had such a unique essence back then. There are some great tracks on this one, some of them have been on my favourites playlists for years. Is The Scientist one of the most overplayed songs ever? Sure. Is it still one of the most beautiful sad songs ever? Absolutely. If you've never experienced the kind of feeling that would make you relate to this song, I'm honestly jealous. There are a few tracks on this album that I don't consider the strongest, but having never listened through this album in its entirety before, there were quite a few positive surprises as well, such as Green Eyes and the title track.
Lots of good tunes on this album. Hadn't listened to this one in a long time.
look. i'm tired of pretending coldplay sucks
Honestly if you don't like "mainstream pop-py" stuff like this you're just coming off as a pretentious, no-fun snob and i can guarantee you are boring at parties and trust me, nobody wants you there.
absolute classic
8/10
Some good stuff on here. The scientist is on it's own would have been a 5, but all together it's a 4
Maybe I've given Coldplay too much slack. This was enjoyable
Clocks had a chokehold on everyone in the 2000s. It’s still so mystical and emotional sounding like a lot of this album. This one holds a special place in my heart.
This was fun. I like the Scientist of course and there were a few others. Better than average for sure! LOL
As much as I want to call it corny schmaltz, it hits all the right spots.
annoyingly some good songs here so a begrudging 4
I guess I'm boring. I really like Coldplays early stuff. I can listen to every single song.
An above average album highlighted by the hits in Clocks and The Scientist. Every song sounds good though and is unique enough. 7.25/10 (3.625/5)
Coldplay is one of those bands i was told was band and i shouldn't listen to by the internet and some friends. But when i listen to them i just feel "Is it really that bad?" It's well crafted, easy listened pop, soft indie rock. the Hits are iconic and instantly recognizable. I feel like they are stuck in the nickelback spiral where they are bad because we all decided that it is. Is it a masterpiece, not really. is it bad or poorly written, definitely not. I get why the hits have billions in streams but he other songs feels strange to have at least 10M+ each because some are really forgettable. i'm guessing it is because it is 00s-10s music and people probably loved the album as a whole when they were younger
Awesome band. Awesome singer, and music. One of my favorite bands, and still going strong today,
Really nice album, good music and I realized that there a lot of Coldplay’s classic music that are on it 4 stars as I’m ready listening this album one more time
Although I am not a fan, this is not bad of course
THEYRE BRITISH????? 3.75 stars.
I've never actually listened to anything aside from the hits from Coldplay and was pleasantly surprised. Some of the songs get a little repetitive with their chorus and blend together, but a 4/5 for me. New songs I like: Politik, A Whisper
I was never into Coldplay but it just so happened that I listened to this album while commuting to work on the first warm and sunny day this year in my late spring/early summer clothes and this vibe just hit me. Teenage vibe of easily enjoying your life and each day it brings.
Coldplay's masterpiece.
Beautiful album. If only album could be this consistently good! Coldplay is such a classic to me and my childhood. I don’t think there’s a bad track on this album :p
Decent album by Coldplay.
I was familiar with a lot of the songs on this album. There were a couple I really liked that I hadn’t heard much before. Politik and Amsterdam were my favorites. Overall I really liked this album.
I'm a hater, but this is good. 4.
Classic
I really like this early Coldplay album...elicits a lot of different moods and is a bit darker and more emotional than their later more pop-oriented stuff.
The definition of chill - and part of my college soundtrack - such a great road trip album
Tuneful
I used to have the Scientist music video memorized shot for shot, so... Evident cohesion as a whole and standout tracks theoughout: ✅✅✅ The Scientist ✅✅ Clocks ✅✅✅ Warning Sign ✅✅ A Rush of Blood to the Head
Liked this way more than I expected given what Coldplay is today. I thought this was a really tight album that still sounded interesting and modern. I've probably heard the majority of these songs before, but never sequentially - which actually made the whole listening experience better.
Damn. New Coldplay annoys me so much I forgot about how much I listened to/loved this album in high school. It held up for me.
Wow! This album is hit after hit after hit!! I had no idea. Wanted to hate it but I just didn’t.
Tope de gamuza, sin llegar a ser 'Parachutes'.
Somehow melancholic
Nice album
Unbelievable that we have two Coldplay albums within three days. Also interesting that this album was released only one year after "Parachutes." My review is essentially the same -- Coldplay at its best, before the 2010s. This one was more structured and arguably deeper.
I feel like it's a little embarassing, but I like Coldplay, mostly because of how much they sound like Radiohead Lite
Super duper
grossartiges album, einzelne songs sind nicht so toll gealtert. für mich immer noch das album, als noch niemand Coldplay kannte und tickets für das hallenstadion auch nach 7 minuten noch erhältlich waren.
6/10
I couldn’t have named or recognised a single song by Coldplay nor did I even any idea they’d been called the most successful band of the 21st century. Unsurprisingly given that I was alive in the 2000s, there were a few familiar tracks here! I rather enjoyed it.
omg not the scientist its 10am why am i sobbing is this not as coldplay as it could possibly get
Albumi #151, 18.02.2025 Coldplayn kakkosalbumi vuodelta 2002 on hieno albumi. Coldplayn parhaat albumit sijoittuvat mielestäni uran alkupäähän.
Never had listened to this whole album before. Loved it.
Wanted to hate but couldn’t
sad, very sad clocks is my childhood 4 bc im not really into alternative lol
It’s a good Coldplay album. What can I say? I am one of those people who likes the song the scientist.
pretty melancholy, but still incredible
Let's get one thing out of the way first: Coldplay are indeed *overrated*, whether commercially or even critically (at least to a certain extent). There's something a little too predictable and complacent in their chord sequences and vocal melodies. To the point where loads of people have labelled their music as "beige" and "bland" (which is certainly true for some of the deep cuts they wrote and recorded from the get-go). In other words, there are not enough "alarms" and "surprises" in their songs, to borrow words from lyrics by the band Chris Martin dreams he could rub shoulders with on an artistic level (without ever managing to do so). Not everyone has the crazed-out genius of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, mind you. Yet that doesn't necessarily mean their first four albums are not worthy of your time if you're interested in that sort of indie-soft-rock they helped popularized during the noughts. Let me try to put it in another way. Sure, if you compare them to Radiohead, as I just did, they can't have the upper hand (which is why it is maybe unfair to do so). But if you compare their music to the one of Travis or Keane, the comparison becomes far more flattering. Even if they are simpler on the surface, Coldplay's compositions *can* have some memorable and truly endearing features. And it's never easy to write something that's equally memorable and moving and evocative. Case in point, "Clocks", its instantly catchy piano arpeggios, its dreamy yet also subtle background synthetic and guitar effects, and its heartfelt vocal performance. This example is not the most daring hit single to have ever hit the charts, sure. But that doesn't make it a bad track either. So as usual with this band, you need to sort out the whiff from the chaff. Which is not too difficult in the case of this record In a sense, the major flaw of *A Rush Of Blood To The Head* can be summed up by the fact that it can't really choose between replicating the formula of debut LP *Parachutes* and trying some new things. It does a little bit of both, and partly succeeds in each endeavor, but also partly fails for both. Examples: "The Scientist", "In My Place", "Green Eyes" and "Warning Signs" all closely follow the "Yellow" template, but only the first song manages to offer any sort of new thrills in that old mold. As for innovation, the production values are a little more self-assured, and there are very interesting moments of tensions in the quite driven and obsessive patterns of great opener "Politik", as well as in the simple yet effective half-tone descending lines of "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" or the eastern-sounding flourishes of "Daylight". Yet starting with that song, the second half of this LP gets bogged down by too much sentimentality, too much complacency, and not enough punch. Nothing grating for sure. Yet nothing really exciting either. Only the hypnotic "A Whisper" brings back a little Radiohead-adjacent tension to the tracklist, even if the song is not exactly a banger. After that, the title-track had rather good lyrics that seem to express a sardonic view about toxic masculinity (with some surprisingly aggressive overtones to describe the latter). And closer "Amsterdam" is a pretty good unobtrusive ballad expanding a little sonically towards the end. But it's *yet another damn ballad*! And by this point you truly get ballad-weary... In the notes from my copy of this album at home -- bought in a second-hand CD shop -- there is a praise for organizations and businesses practicing "fair trade" with third world countries, with some online ressources to check on the subject. As if capitalist-driven "fair trade" was indeed possible on a systemic level in the first place... (heavy sigh). Just like their music often is, Coldplay are either a little too naive, or a little in self-denial about how true strength (whether musical or political) can be reached. That doesn't necessarily they're bad people or even bad artists. But it might partly suggest that people who are very derisive about them might have a point. They're not the worst band in the world by far. But they're so "unchallenging" that it comes as no surprise that their success is frowned upon by many. After a while, you truly want to shake the fans of this act and say: "OK, fine! Now can you also look for good music *elsewhere*???" You can't have "fair trade" when you're facing a monopoly. 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 4. 8.5/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3.5) Number of albums left to review: around thirty or twenty, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book. Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 463 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 277 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 334
I thought Coldplay was one of those cringey bands that you should be embarrassed to tell people you like but this one is alright. The lyrics are a little sappy at times, and the choruses have pop song repetitiveness to them. Musically though it’s very full yet floaty in a nice way.
There's so much anti Coldplay sentiment these days, that I've found myself starting to believe it (when in fact I loved their first 3 albums, and have subsequently found them a bit boring and over commercialized). Revisiting this album was a welcome reminder of how good it it. No skips for me, and I had forgotten about some great non-single tracks.
Good album with few bangers! „The Scientist” ♥️ Times when Coldplay was not making shit music..
I didn't wnat to do it but great album
The last good Coldplay album. But man, what an album. They could have gone down an amazing road. They did not. Mid 4s
Loved this album when I was younger. Very nostalgic to listen to. Wish Coldplay still sounded like this.
it feels like the ultimate style-over-substance album where even though a lot of the songs didnt stick out from eachother, it still felt more like a special experience than an album of songs i like its aura
Yes this is a great album and yes i'm a sensitive man who enjoys some cheesy 00s rock lol. Some songs are not as good as others (the main singles being my favorite, politik being a great opener. Warning Sign being my favorite deep cut of the bands). The rest are not bad by any means but not as memorable.
Easy to listen to album with a nostalgic feel, 7.5/10.
I did enjoy this, there are some hugely popular tracks on here that I've heard before, and I'm reminded of Radiohead when I listened to this and I do like Radiohead. I think I'll come back to this and recommended this album to someone already.
No sé cómo no lo había escuchado antes (aunque ya conocía mucha canciones), me gustó muchísimo. Fav: Clocks/A Rush of Blood to the Head Rating: 8.7
I know we all should vote 1 simply because it is from today's most pretentious industrial music band on the planet. Up until A Rush of Blood this was a serious band and this record was the culmination of their style taken serious. Overly maybe in places, but such a consistent outing at high quality is rare these days. Sure, it is Pop, not Rock, intentionally mass and stadium compatible, but nonetheless simply good. Songwriting, production, arrangements and performance are top notch - and say what you will, on Parachutes and this one Chris Martin was a fine performer. After that, steep downhill, overwrought self-indulgent concepts for a targeted audience, highly fabricated and strangely bereft of emotion, exchanging authentic demanour for pathetic gesture...
This is Coldplay and probably Coldplay at their finest. They are very melodic and easy to listen to, but don’t expect a ton of variety. Again, this is Coldplay being Coldplay.
Yeah it’s probably not that good but I enjoy it anyway.
First time listening this album. Overall, very good production and good sounding quality consistently through the whole album. Couple of radio friendly songs that became huge successes. Several other good songs. They tend to go on a little longer than I love, but overall interesting album. couple of songs, which I was not familiar with that I enjoyed include green eyes and rush of blood to the head. Enjoyed the album and would listen to it again at some point
Jj
I'm a fan of the first 3 Coldplay albums, though I haven't listened to them in a while, and I like them in the order of their release. So, this is my second favorite album by them, next to "Parachutes." In any case, this album still has some edge and some odder tracks. This was when they were somewhat still being somewhat compared to Radiohead with some of their tracks like "Daylight," though you can already see where they were going with songs like "Clocks." Overall, I still think this album holds up and shows the heights of Chris Martin's writing and how talented they are. I just wish they would have stayed closer to this sound than what they ended up becoming.
the scientist always makes me cry
Old Coldplay is my favorite CP music, 1st album Parachutes was the best and this 2nd one is also great, lots of quality tracks and interesting music, they most certainly did not suffer any sophomore slump. Although I really like this album from start to finish, the Super Stand Outs for me are 3-8 from God put a Smile.. (LOVE) to Warning Sign (massive love for this one too), which I literally JUST used in class last wk as a listening exercise.
I don't know if it's my mood this morning, but this album connects with me. Its thoughtfulness provokes a deep sense of nostalgia. There is the perfect amount of intensity and softness...
Forever lilting - equals measures U2 and the Beatles - it's amazing how much more this album sounds like actual music than anything they have done in the last Lord knows how long. Songs follow pretty much the same form but it's a pretty good form and a number of tracks truly take flight. Hard to hate if taken on its own merit.
Maybe it’s… a rush of blood to the head, but is Coldplay… good?
A couple of classics, a couple of songs that sound like jam sessions gone well and a few forgetful tracks
Pretty nice cozy music Standout tracks: Clocks, The Scientist
Done
Another good album by Coldplay where they built on their debut, and hadn’t reached their full on dull phase. Album cover is awful though. Top track: Clocks
Not a big Coldplay fan. That being said, this was a great listen 4/5
I am one of those people that dunked on Coldplay. When I went to work in the UK music industry the cool boys that were in charge of the office stereo said that Coldplay produced several brilliant albums and I was confused. But they have a great set of songs. Clocks is a classic. This is a good album. Maybe not top draw brilliant but definitely up there.
"does anyone have any music recommendations. i mostly like music that was important to me at formative parts of my life"
I usually hate Coldplay but clocks rocks and the rest of the album is okay if samey
I haven't listened to this album much since the year it came out when I bought it and so didn't know if it was because I hated it or if something else got in the way. Turns out this was a pretty good album.
The Last truly great Coldplay album. It's a cliché, but boy, was I disappointed in their trajectory from here on out.
I enjoyed this more than Parachutes, it was good vibes overall, chill pop music. This is an album I can see myself coming back to. Stand-out: In My Place, Clocks
Good calming I liked it
This is a more recent and better U2. Trying to be overly poetic and thoughtful, decent sound at times but not mind-blowing in any direction. It does a good job being catchy and mellow. Totally makes sense it's popular and I do think it belongs on the list but not something I'd hunt out to listen. It feels more like an album for singles to have radio play vs something that is designed to be listened to as an album. There is something decent here for sure even if it isn't your jam.
I thought this album was more recent than 2002, it holds up. Still Coldplay sounds a little sterile for my taste. The sound is lacking some body compared to say a Neil Young album. Solid song writing, good compositions. Some great singles. It's an album.
I dug this album a lot when it was released. I grew out of this band there after and more into harder stuff. But now that I am a bit older and mature I do enjoy this album and know how good it is. I have not listened to this in a while.
Very 2000s feeling but still has some great tracks.
I don't get it, I thought I hated Coldplay
Extremely high highs (The Scientist & Clocks) and the rest is decent. Kind of a lull in the middle for a few songs but still finishes well. 7/10
You know, I spent a lot of years shitting on Coldplay. Very much like how I was with U2. This album is legitimately good. There's a reason why their fan base is so prominent and multi-generational. Nice work Chris!
Apparently this was the stuff back in the 2000s. Reminded me of the Arcade Fire album from a while back with the loud stuff in the background. A bit mopey but the hits are undeniable. Low 4.
I liked p much everything from the scientist to the 2nd to last song. Maybe it took me 3 songs to get used to his voice and I just don’t love the last song. But I don’t think Coldplay takes much getting used to right?? Anyways this was good
7/10 - HIs voice is quite good and I like the piano most of the time. It has some repetitions which is not the most fun to listen to some times. Overall a pretty solid album with a lot of hits.
Never realized how huge Coldplay was. This album was solid, like a less exciting Radiohead
I don’t give enough love and thought to Coldplay, but their early albums are really great and revisiting this album reminded me of how excellent a band Coldplay can be. I miss this sound, as I think they’ve gotten very “pop-y” nowadays, but this album is a great showcase of Coldplay at its best. The songs are lyrical, varied, and really enjoyable to listen to. There’s some real bangers on here too, like “In My Place,” “Clocks,” and “The Scientist” as well as a sleeper hit I always love when I hear again “God Put a Smile upon Your Face.” Also just a really great reminder of growing up and the music I was starting to explore as a kid.
It's OK.
No private session used for Spotify. I find Coldplay albums very polarizing I either like them a lot or find them to poppy and bland. Considering I like their older albums, maybe they have always just had poppy songs, I like older pop music not newer pop music. Coldplay has changed, I have not. Anyway, this is one of the albums I like. Several of these songs got a lot of airplay, so that might me when I was younger I did enjoy popular music more. This is pop and mellow, so not quite as fun, but I still like it.
A Rush of Blood to the Head is more mature than Parachutes, but I’m not sure it hits the same heights. The Scientist and the closing title track are highlights and are different than their first album. 8.5/20
Holds up very well!!
Is everyone still pretending Coldplay is not good? This is great pop music, no matter how you look at it. If Coldplay hadn't been huge immediately, and had instead had been some indie dad-band, this would probably be on so many Top 10 of All Time lists. Nerds. Coldplay is great.
A little front-loaded because of those first 5 excellent tracks, but keeps up a high standard throughout. Sure it's nothing that's going to blow your mind, but Coldplay back then just had a real knack for writing a great tune. 'In My Place' especially is a highlight for that beautiful guitar lick.
Sounds good to me! 4/5
The last good album before Coldplay started phoning it in. Warm, intimate, melodic.
What a wondeful album
Coldplay are cool but not, like, very cool.
Old me thought this was a perfect album. Still great but drags on a little.
I don’t know if it’s a great album, but it nailed my mood this morning.
4 STARS!
Classic Coldplay was excellent
Every song sound just like Coldplay. Which is not a bad thing, but I felt like it could have used a bit more variety to spice up the album. I did enjoy it though.
A Rush of Blood to the Head is an album jam packed full of fabulous melodies. I'd not listened to it before but will definitely be an album that will continue to grow on me when I come back to it.
8/10
Good
Coldplay have fallen off the cliff so long ago that I forget they used to make actual music. I liked this a lot in the day, and it still holds up.
Maybe Coldplay isn’t so bad after all…
Great start to finish.
Not in love with Coldplay but I did like this album.
Great album. Favourites- politik, god put a smile on my face, scientist, clocks,
A fave
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great background music. 4
This album was a great reminder of how incredible the aughts were for music. I don't even like Coldplay, and yet I found myself completely sucked into this album. Coldplay is a band where I'm mostly familiar with their hits, but I've never given them a deep dive. This album had some popular tunes on it that I remember from back in the day, but I also really enjoyed the songs I had never heard before. It's such a cohesive sound, and yes, it's pop rock, but it's not overly saccharine. I really enjoyed listening to this and can see myself returning to it. Maybe I was too hard on Coldplay all these years.
This album felt like a collection of singles: a few great songs and a bunch of mid songs. None of the mid songs are at all bad, just sort of boring. It gets a four from me because the few great songs are mint, top tier - Politik, The Scientist, and Clocks. Clocks is one of the first songs I learned on the piano, good memories. Lyricism in this album is lacking, but lead singer Chris Martin has a great voice. I wonder what he would’ve sounded like if he took a more alternative route with his music…
I sort of wonder if Coldplay had only released this album and Parachutes, if I'd have a better opinion of them? Because their music today feels like the photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy.
Good songs that i liked for a long time already
I really wonder about reviewers giving this album a 1. I mean do you know anything about music? Are you just an ignorant meathead? Yes it got overplayed and yes they border on whiny at times but song construction and production is top notch. Some great deep cuts too.
