very fun enjoyable groovy album, steely dan is the man

Steely Dan mentioned!

Rikki Don’t Lose That Number got me out of bed. Going into this I knew nothing about Steely Dan or their music but I was pleasantly surprised. I got to listen to this album driving on a rare sunny day and it just made me feel good. I just felt good listening to these instrumentals and they often put a smile on my face. I added several tracks to my library and would like to listen to this again.

5 stars, really, for Any Major Dude but the whole thing is solid

Steely Dan is always great. So well crafted, great line up of musicians and lovely songs they were able to create here. There's one goofy ahh song in the middle but that doesn't really ruin my enjoyment of the album. Honestly kind of interchangable with other Steely Dan albums but I really enjoy all of them.

MY GOATS FINALLY ARRIVED AFTER 100+ DAYS. The pioneers and masters of Jazz Rock. Basically every album is a 5 and this is no exception, that said pretzel logic is on the lower end of their discography. Standouts are Rikki don’t lose that number, Night by Night and Pretzel Logic. I gotta comment on the broader narrative of the discography, because Steely Dan’s 9 album run mainly follows through the eyes of an american man going through the years living mainly a life of excitement and debauchery and he clearly ages with each album, on their first (Can’t Buy a Thrill) he’s clearly young and barely out of school and by the time of Gaucho (the 7th album), his prime as long since past and doesn’t fully understand the current generation, Pretzel Logic is the 3rd album and fits in nicely as he seems to be a young adult to younger middle-aged man, while the album doesn’t clearly showcase the characters age, it shows the character is an adult thats living the fun city life, watching bands (parkers band), asking women out (rikki) and having a deep understanding of the city life while being between albums that clearly showcase age makes it fit nicely in the middle chronologically. Also noticed The Royal Scam AND Gaucho aren’t in the list, what the heck guys??

Wasn't expecting anything good from this album, but it proved me wrong. Steely Dan's ability to deliver more than expected remains unmatched as always

Yet another amazing Steely Dan album. Meticulously crafted. Amazing musicianship. The quality really shines through especially compared to current standards. A classic. Completely stands the test of time

This band reminds me of my father. He was born in 1957, and he loved this kind of music.

I mean. It’s all so perfect. I don’t have any thoughts on how they could improve any of the tracks on this album!

This is a classic. Along with all Steely Dan albums. Great song writing & amazing musicianship.

One of the best of all time. I love steely dan

This one was gorgeous. I already knew and liked steely dan but I never focused on the band. this was a true win

Faultless! by this time Becker and Fagen had already started to dissolve the original band and use session musicians in the studio, the original members were used for some parts but the die was cast for the future. The opener, Rikki, is one of the most iconic and successful SD singles, but this is a great album all round, Any Major Dude and Barrytown are highlights for me and East St Louis Toodle-oo and Parker's Band both give a sizeable nod to classic jazz.

No skips. Excellent. One of their best. Superb guitar work. Includes a Duke Ellington tune. You owe yourself a listen.

Steely Dan is the GOAT. He was sampled by De La Soul

🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨!!!!!!!!!+

The distinctive bass and piano on Rikki Don't Lose That Number form a nice backbone, with a memorable chorus and good solo. I like Night By Night even more, a similar stop-start rhythm to the riffing and nice backing melodies and effects. Any Major Dude has a breezy guitar lick that makes the song. Barrytown is another highlight - melodic in what I think of as a 60s way. Then we get a quirky ragtime-inspired instrumental. This is starting to be a trip through different times and places, but it all comes together in a cohesive way. I like the strings on Through With Buzz, and the title track is excellent, pure blues rock with driving melodic bass and maybe the best solos on the album. Charlie Freak is kind of brilliant also. There's something effortlessly cool about this. I like the clear, clean production too. I'm between **** and ***** but rounding up because I keep wanting to go back and listen to this.

The last album Steely Dan made whilst still a touring band is a collection of concise tunes with a greater pop sensibility than their two previous efforts. It contains their biggest billboard hit (Ricky don't lose that number), their first album title track and their first and only cover and instrumental (East St. Louis doodle-oo). It is an eclectic and quirky mix, and a number of the songs are from Walter and Donald's writing before the band was formed. Not my favourite album of theirs but still totally magnificent stuff - 'every major dude will tell you' is a phenomenal piece of work.

The logic of the pretzel. Mmm yes

They are all 5 Stars, aren’t they? 😁

THE playlist to draw&dance

This was incredible. Have always loved Steely Dan. Many classics here.

I sincerely doubt I'm going to be able to make myself give any Steely Dan album less than a 5.

Always heared about them, but never actually listened to them beforehand. I don't know what kind of music they play, but this is kind of music that I like.

muy fab

Smooth and velvety at times jammy

Major heat. Pleasantly suprised

Caveat: I grew up listening to Steely Dan and I still love 'em. Pretzel Logic is fab, a precursor to the sound that would emerge as Aja. The musicianship and arrangements are top notch. I could listen to this almost daily without tiring of it.

Love steely dan so. What else then 5

Classic. Short and sweet. Every song is great 5/5 pretzels 🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨

i love this album!! definitely one of my favorites now!! wonderful listen

Oh mama, le ptit Steely Dan surprise qui arrive clutch à la fin, j’adore

Reminds me of Matt & Sarah, though I have no idea if they listen to Steely Dan. Great tunes.

I love Steely Dan so much

Way better than I thought. Steely Dan still has a hokey sound sometimes, to Me. But this songwriting is great and I LOVE the gratuitous solos

Simply Cool

The line up alone requires a standing O. These musicians have consistently put out timeless recordings for YEARS. They are just as good today as the day they were recorded. AND they just got better as they composed and recorded. Steely Dan forever!

Steely Dan Man … Steely Dan. Underrated album of there’s, some point criticisms, and a lot of good music

Phenomenal album and classic Steely Dan sound.

Don't tell my dad, but I could listen to any Steely Dan for weeks

Thought Countdown to Ecstasy was a little better, but this is a damn good album in its own regard. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

I’m at a 5. I mean, it’s Steely Dan, what am I supposed to say? If you like “Can’t Buy A Thrill” & “Countdown to Ecstasy” (or if you’ve gotten “Aja” by now, unlike us), you’ll enjoy this. All my same praises apply here, with Donald Fagen’s vocals especially sounding even more refined here, and the band’s technical skill being showcased a bit more. I don’t think it’s got the same consistent stream of hit after hit like “Can’t Buy A Thrill” does, but this is still a super fun album in its own right. As with “Can’t Buy A Thrill”, I really have no complaints, and only nitpicks; I think the lyricism isn’t quite as tight as I remember from the band (though still pretty good), and I think it could’ve had a more definitive closing track than “Monkey in Your Soul”, which doesn’t really feel like it wraps up the album satisfyingly. It’s a good track, but it feels like it’s building to something more. The length is surprising here; at just 34 minutes, it’s the shortest one on the list, and I do think that makes the quality / pace of the album suffer just a little bit, in a way that’s almost too fast to appreciate the variety the album is going for. I’m not saying they had to pad to make it 40-ish minutes, but I think just a little bit more room to explore some solos & soundscapes further would give each track a little more weight to appreciate them with. All in all though, I’m splitting hairs – this is another great Steely Dan album, and I think it’s about on par with “Countdown to Ecstasy”. I’m glad it’s on the list, and I really, REALLY cannot wait to get Aja at some point over the final 310 albums. Hopefully that comes sooner than later, but as far as this album goes, it’s a very nice 5.

got 100% absolutely jumpscared by the piano riff in 'rikki don't lose that number'. genuinely thought I had put 'song for my father' on queue somehow. ON THAT NOTE 'rikki don't lose that number' is a BOP AND A HALF. steely dan is??? really good????????? I love it when popular things are good! Barrytown is also excellent. Very catchy. And East St. Louis Toodle-Oo is also great I love a good piano saxophone moment. I think...guys I think I really like Steely Dan.

Short album with high quality material

Super super solid, liked it a lot top to bottom.

Love this album. So does my daughter on 1 year. Riktigt Don't Loose That Number have been playing a third time straight, and she's just jamming along. For me the best way to describe this album is; tasty. Tasty compositions, Donald Fagens tasty voice that fits so well with the music, and tasty guitar playing by Walter Becker.

Of course Rikki is great, but the second half is also really strong.

Some of the best guitar playing I have ever heard!

Sometimes I smile when I see what has been generated for me, other times I give a mild cheery but never before have I happily fist-pumped as I did when I got this album by one of my favourite bands This is so novel, the bubbling sound at the beginning of Rikki Don’t lose that Number is a flapamba, a type of Xylophone, how cool is that. But, the album also feels very laid back, like guys just sitting in a New York bar telling tales and sharing stories, but really interesting stories, in harmony.

Dazzling compositional creativity and breathtaking musicianship. Wow

This album is a ten as high as the highest tree, and even more. I've loved it, and, wow, how didn't I know about it before? This album is great, such a masterpiece. There is so much variety, but also a sonic consistency. And the songs are all fantastic, there are no skips possible. Every song is a universe in itself. There's a lot on here to dive in, a lot of different sounds, layers,... And I'm here for it, oh, yes, for it all! I've loved this album. It's very enjoyable and full of bangers, funny and subtle, and full of taste. I can't stop repeating how good it is!

Whenever I play Deadlock and get tilted I play Steely Dan to calm myself down like a dog given a pill hidden in peanut butter. 5 stars.

🤌🏼

Top 3: Night By Night, Barrytown, Charlie Freak

Always liked Steely Dan but this listen was so eye-opening for me. Such incredible music-making. Immaculate production and the entire thing feels so full- the lyrics never detract from the artistry of the music and vice versa. Everything fits together so well into this massive slice of timeless music. Pretty instantaneously elevated this band into my favorites. This record feels like a pop progressive rock and jazz combination without ever feeling offputting, boring, or messy. Cannot wait to hear more SD now.

I LOVE STEELY DAN. SO FUNKY

Very nice. Second half dips a little but still great stuff.

Thank God for Steely Dan. I had just finished being annoyed by Don MacLean’s awful American Pie album. Steely Dan provided an epic musical bath to clean my palate and my soul. They are the basic black dress of pop music — always sophisticated, appropriate, and cool. Love the fusion of jazz with witty lyrics, and super talented and tasteful instrumentals. A 5 — will enjoy this any time.

really fun, white people music, reminds me of guardians of the galaxy.

another shout out to king jerry for this one!! he played steely dan all the time, though mostly their album aja. i think this is the first time ive listened to this full album but god DAMN it’s great. not one skippable song imho. it’s innovative it’s fun it makes me want to hit the grill idk but i loved it so so much old faves: rikki don’t lose that number pretzel logic new faves: night by night barrytown!!!!

Pretzel Logic is an interesting mix of rock with jazz and pop influences. The sound of the album is fluid and interesting, ranging from instrumentals such as "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" to the atmospheric basses and piano riffs of "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". Vocals are strong and enjoyable, and reinforced by appropriate instrumentation.

Great album. Probably a four star record for me that gets bumped up by the strength of the singles.

Love steely dan

5 stars, smashing!

It’s a pretty chill but lowkey make you want to move your shoulder type of album. Surprisingly I liked it, added a few songs to my playlists.

From my favorites

Richtig tolles Album, mega schöne, lustige, verspielte Musik. Bisschen wir Bob Dylan, bis jetzt mein Favorit

Liked the Jazz influence here. Last two songs and that weird East St. Louis instrumental diversion really worked for me

Perfect

Not their best but with enough bangers to still make it great!

fantastic from front to back

loved this album very much the Vibe is unmatched

Pop Tiger Woods on your 360, stick on Pretzel Logic. A partnership like gin and tonic or Hobbs and Shaw. Bliss.

Everything steely Dan does is gold

Rock on

Legitimately have never listened to a full Steely Dan album until now. Now I want to know what else I've been missing out on.

one of my first instant 5 that came up. Steely Dan is just so funky and cool This is the first time I remember listening to this album strictly with headphones and so much more comes across, prime example is the beginning of Rikki.

The 70's is becoming one of my fave music periods. Rock n roll!

Not my personal favorite Steely Dan album but nevertheless and incredible album in it's own right.

Muss man würdigen.

Schon das letzte Steely Dan Album gefiel mir sehr gut, aber das hier hat wirklich Spaß gemacht. Werde ich mir mit Sicherheit wieder anhören.

classic

Really enjoyed this.

This came up in my pique steely Dan listening phase

Night by Night, wow. Brilliant Rikki, Major Dude. Wow. Solo in Rikki is superb. Have we found the second best Dan album?? I think we have While Aja is a beast that would be impossible to beat, this is very very top.

Classic Steely 5/5

Rock bem legal

100%for me

very strong opening! I really liked Rikki don’t lose that number. And Barry town. It gets a bit boring for the second part of the album, but it’s still ok. Also a very short album. Production wise, amazingly fresh for a 70’s album. Can’t complain. A very low 5 for me. Enjoyable.

Any major dude will tell you that I’m a Stan for the Dan. Get out your house coats, brandy, and stogies for this one.

I was surprised by this album, was good

5 stars!

5/5 Steely Dan

One of my all time favorites and the one that made me a Steely Dan convert.

This sounds so modern, it’s incredible!

Classic. One of my favorites.

Apart from the East Louise toodle....instrumental. This is a flawless album. Really like Charlie Freak and the arrangements involved.

Classic 5/5

Love the complexity of this album. They slide between jazz, wah guitar solos, gongs, strings and 80s pop rock. I think what I like about Steely Dan is just the absurdity of what they do but somehow wrapping up into a package that's super accessible to a huge range of people. When I eventually get a boat and spend my sunny Sundays cruising the coast and drinking red wine it will be Steely Dan I listen to.

I realized while listening to this album that if CSNY played jazz rock instead of folk rock, they'd sound a lot like Steely Dan. To make a more modern comparison, some of the singing and composition on this album remind me of Geordie Greep on the New Sound (which better be on the user list by the time I make it there!). Anyways, as a suburban dad in his 30s, I approve.

Love this album. gives billy joel vibes

Omg first rock and roll album i heard, love the sound

Sublime

Grande album dall’inizio alla fine, poi ricky don’t lose that number hit assoluta. 9-/10

mi è piaciuto molto

Che fatto incredibile.

I am a Dan-head, and had a blast buzzing through this record. Jazzy pop rock that is as tight as can be and chock full of hooks and grooves. They dip into some country, blues, dixieland, etc. but firmly sound like Steely Dan; unique lyrics and pristine sound.

I know this is total dad music but I’ve always loved these guys. They’re not sweating the small stuff.

Solid album, love the vibe and some songs to come back to 4.7

Makes you feel like you’re in a montage about semi-corrupt cops in a 1976 Brooklyn, NY precinct… and that’s a great feeling. 10/10 recommend.

“Dad rock” before “dad rock.” Just impeccable recording. Everything sounds so clean, clear, precise, punchy. I found myself wanting to push the volume up—just enrapturing production. Musically, there’s a warmth to this record. Inviting, invigorating. Couldn’t stop listening and nodding my head. Something very nostalgic about it but not “old.” It’s been a while since a record just made my heart happy like this. Blues, jazz, rock, pop, bop—varied and inspired, every idea hits and is executed expertly. 9/10 Standouts: Night by Night -immaculate reeds Any Major Dude Will Tell You East St. Louis Toodle-Oo -just made me smile; Main Street, USA With A Gun Charlie Freak -really cool melody Really the whole record is a standout

What a great album! I've been really loving Steely Dan lately. It's funky and chill. Just great background stuff and at the same time actually worth sitting down to listen to!

already heard this frikin great

yeah it's good

5/5 The run of albums Steely Dan had in the 70s and early 80s was something else, full of masterpieces... and Pretzel Logic is one of them!

Yeah I thought this was pretty good. Dad rock for sure. Something to listen to in a garage while drinking a bar. Didn’t lost the momentum at any point all the way through. Would enjoy listening to again!

I don't really want to be a steely dan kind of guy but maybe I should stop resisting and just embrace it. It's a 4/5 for me on first listen but I see the potential for 5 in here and I'm giving bonus points for the duke ellington cover.

Love it.

Very little to say about this one - that's not a bad thing, it's just an album I'd previously listened to before starting this project. Doesn't take anything away from this, though. It's a really, really good album. The jazz influences incredibly enjoyable - possibly the jazziest Steely Dan album for me?

Classic

Amazing album

YESYESYESSSSS Spunky and yummy noises

Extremely dad/yacht rock and I must admit I love it.

Five Stars!

Classic

Any Major Dude Will Tell You that this is yet another certified Dan-Banger, baby! Suck it Dan haters.

I listened to this twice. 4.8716

This was an amazing album to listen to. Although they are a rock band, this has a very nice soft rock sound that I enjoyed a lot. Perfect for a chill listen.

Classic yacht-rock/dad-rock album

Despite feeling like the most ‘going through the motions’ Steely Dan album on the list and almost not feeling weighty enough to be an album by comparison to their other tracks, their style of production and jazzy rock composition (perhaps not to the same degree as Aja, I’d say this is a middleground between that and Can’t Buy a Thrill) is still an unbeatable sound. While this may be my least favourite album I have heard from them and definitely on the verge of being a 4, the consistently incredible output from this group has cemented them as a heavyweight of this list and certainly a new all time favourite of mine.

For me, this album has astronomical highs, and a low end further down than snake shit. Rikki don’t lose that number. An earworm in the classic tradition of songs about a chick you want to fuck. Sang out of key many times while half cut. Classic. Night by Night, a song which fills a similar niche in my brain to Gerry Rafferty’s entire discography. Major Dude and the title track, both rock solid, catchy and extremely groovy. And possibly my personal favourite Steely Dan track “With A Gun”. I have listened to this song so many times I could probably recite it backwards at this point. The remainder of the album doesn’t stick out in my memory to as great of a degree, but is extremely competent and still a pleasurable listen. The outlier dragging down the whole affair is Barrytown. I fucking hate this piece of shit. Maybe one of the only songs by Steely Dan I will go out of my way to skip. I don’t know if I could describe why this song fucks me off so much I just think it’s shitty and annoying. still a 5 though.

********** stars!

Magnifico

idk about you guys but I personally vibe to the idea of listening to this in socks and sandals

Top 3 of all time favorite albums. Grew up listening to Pretzel Logic, and it's one of the few albums that can always help when I'm spiraling.

Just loved it. The music on its own is not particularly my favourite genre of music, but the whole feel of the album is just spectacular. 9/10

Len got arrested in New York in 1958 for having sex with a pretzel. I’m still not sure how or why he did it?! 4.6 3. Any major dude will tell you

Fuck yes sir

What can I say? It’s Steely Dan, that’s always going to be five stars from me. Amazing stuff.

Great album, steely Dan is know for excellent session artist, this album shows that

Great :D

You always hear so much about them, then you listen, then you move on. This is a definitely a keeper. The 70’s all summed up in one album.

As a Caucasian 39-year-old man, I am legally required to give a Steely Dan album a five star rating.

Will be back for more!

Rikki Don't Lose That Number is giving Sims 2 build mode in the best way. Nostalgic and I love it instantly. LOVED it. 4 or 5 stars, probably 5.

precise, yet swinging - wise, literate, sharp tales with a band rooted in jazz, looking for the next wave to catch

always loved this one

Overall: 9/10 YEAH STEELY DAN WOOHOO STEELY DAN GIMME DAT STEELY DAN WOOHOO YEAH My love of the Dan kind of started out as a joke cause all my friends would laugh whenever I would play them and constantly yell STEELY DAN, but after a while the joke turned into a full on obsession. Now I listen to them pretty much every day. I love all of their albums but I think this is the one they really hit their stride. There's more emphasis on the jazzier elements compared to the first 2 albums and Donald Fagen sounds more confident than ever. I think I slightly prefer Aja but this is a close second for me. I wish Gaucho was in the list but it's not like it's going anywhere lol Fav Song: Rikki Don't Lost That Number Least Fav Song: Through With Buzz

There's a lot of competition for this title, but this is my favorite Steely Dan album. It's so tight, front to back. To me, it's always felt like the most Beatleseque album in their catalog. The songs are mostly short, catchy pop tunes that each have their own sonic flavor and style. "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" is one of the most purely enjoyable pop songs Steely Dan ever wrote. It's a great opener. And the funky "Night By Night" is a fantastic, high-energy follow-up. I also love the folk-rock of "Any Major Dude Will Tell You." Later in the album, there's an instrumental jazz cover ("East St. Louis Toodle-Oo") and the blues rock of the title track. There's a lot of different styles on this album but they flow seamlessly from one to the next. This is a fun album to try to decipher the lyrics on. Other than "Rikki," which is a pretty straightforward love song, most of these songs have lines in them that make you go, "Wait, what is this about?" And for me, that's one of the fun things about Steely Dan. "Parker's Band" is about getting high and listening to Charlie Parker, "Pretzel Logic" might be about time travel but I take it be a metaphor about nostalgia, and "Monkey in Your Soul" is about... I have absolutely no idea. But that horn solo is awesome. And shoutout to the album cover, which I really want to frame and put on the wall one day.

This isn't quite where Can't Buy a Thrill was, but it's still a great album. Also my daughter loves Steely Dan and stops crying when I put them on so bonus points for that.

Wow - this album is awesome. The instrumentation, the vocal performance and layering, the unique identity and sound, chord progressions... This is something I am really wanting to revisit. It gives off such a feel good vibe. I really had a hard time picking a favorite track - the opener is so killer and really sets the tone for the whole album. If I had to pick a favorite though it would be "Any Major Dude Will Tell You". The guitar riffs on that one feel almost nostalgic in a way. This is a classic - it has to be. I loved it all the way through. 5/5

Classique depuis 2011

This album was a pleasure to listen to. It was easy listening and relaxing, so I’m sure I’ll revisit. I liked the instrumentation. I did have it on whilst not giving it my full attention in the car. I had a sense it was stronger in the first half but that may be because I was listening more intently then. Either way I enjoyed :)

Heerlijk

Pitam se koliko puta mogu poslušati ovaj album 🤣 a što ga više slušam, više petica bih mu dala. Ovo je bez dvojbe petica!!! U mojih sigurno top 15, a vjerojatno i top 10 albuma. 5/5, 10/10

I'm down for any Steely Dan album, anytime. Listening to this reminded me of how much an old boyfriend of mine loved the tune "Night by Night." And this is probably the only "rock" album to include a Duke Ellington tune.

Loved this.

Really great, very easy to listen to

Rags to time

Keep on reeling

This was fun! A bit short, which is a shame. But I really enjoy led this one - nice instrumentals and fitting vocal work. 'Night By Night' was my fave.

Stupid fucking computer

'We hear you're leavin', that's okay.' That's Donald Fagen's entry point into this record, to whom I'd like to say: 'don't worry, no one is leaving just yet. It's only just begun.' It's a good thing I didn't leave, b/c I'd have neglected a singular album due to my suspicion of its neatness and sterility. But by the time they cover Duke and then pay homage to Bird, I was all the way in. If it ever feels too smooth for school, just remind yourself of what any major dude'd tell you: 'Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again.' Tho they may hide it, for all the best reasons, Steely Dan is always breaking apart and falling together: too weird to be entirely on kilter. 'Won't you turn that bebop down.' I will not. Nor will I quit this rugged tidiness.

Now HERE'S something I can wag my finger to!

barrytown strong 💪

Great record. I love everything they have ever recorded, including Fagen’s The Nightfly album.

What a great album, the instrumentation is marvelous: very virtuosistic, but not flashy at all, always serving the song. Great songs, some very catchy, great riffs, an awesome album.

Brilliant album. Played it three times today. I’m loving discovering acts like this that I had never heard of.

Super happy that we got this! Ive hit SD a few times in my life without it sparking a deep dive. The experience so far with Cant Catch A Thrill and Aja is mostly stuff that ive heard at least once PL was a fun middle ground (literally came out in between Aja and Cant Catch) and almost completely new to me. From what I read, this was the bands final album that they would go on tour with. Night By Night wouldve been awesome to hear live. Also, during my reading, it seemed like this was a “comeback album” from their second album flop…. Wait… I loved some tracks off of their second album - Countdown to ecstasy. My Old School is an all timer. Why the hate? My review for PL may sound harsh, but Ill still give 4.25 stars on this The first 8 tracks are all killers. We get a radio hit (Ricky), Parkers Band, Pretzel Logic, Night by Night, Any major dude and whatever east saint louis was 😆 (okay, wasnt a huge fan of that, but it was fun for one play) The last 3 tracks were lacking for me. With a gun sounded like a white album rip off. Charlie Freak’s piano was annoying to me. Monkey in your soul didnt appeal to me due to its simplicity

Love this album. Lotta weird songs on here. Such specific weird characters in every song. Not one of my favorite Steely Dan albums but still a real good one

Very different from the later albums we’ve gotten so far, but still a great one. A little more accessible, less jazzy, but can’t knock them for that. Skunk still rips some unexpected lines on a lot of these. Major Dude is in the running for favorite Dan song, also loved Parker’s Band.

Night by Night and Any Major Dude are two of my SD favs....know the album intimately.

Very Fun album

the original, always liked this one

Really enjoyed this. Heard it’s influence on a lot of songs, heaps of vulfpeck/side project stuff. Catchy moments, great songwriting and production. On extra listening, I liked it even more, good stuff.

I like the other Steely Dan one slightly better but this is still a 5/5 for me.

One of my favorites

I don't know why but I liked it. that christmasy song halfway through was also really nice. christmas is in a week so. :)

Essential. Picked this up first time around.

One of my all time faves!

I love this band and this record in particular. Automatic 5.

I honestly got so distracted by how good this album is that I forgot to finish it

Loved!

Generated Countdown to Ecstasy two years ago, I have been on a major Steely Dan kick ever since. I prefer the first three albums just because I love Skunk Baxter's guitar playing but the following albums are great as well. I love the disparity between the somewhat easy listening jazzy music paired with the dark lyrics, I don't why but I like it when things aren't what you imagine they should be. With music like this, shouldn't they be talking about love and dancing? Nope, we are gonna talk about a guy selling his only possession of any value just to get another hit and it kills him. Wonderful playing by everyone involved and the two leader's vision coupled with their perfectionism results in timeless and great songs. Check out all of their albums and read the lyrics.

Already knew and liked the album. Now I like it even more

5 out of 5. Any major dude will tell you this album is great.

One of my top 5 albums of all time.

One of the best jazz rock albums ever and one of my favourite Steely Dan albums. Standouts: Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Monkey In Your Soul, Night By Night and Rikki Don't Lose That Number.

I'm a sucker for this type of layered, harmonicas complex music in short snippets. Really enjoyed it.

My Favourite Album ever

Steely dan es placer Su disco mas beatle?

Es un 9 porque hay un par de Steely que me gustan aun mas, pero redondeo para arriba. Barrytown es igual a Tell me What You See de los Beatles

Day 54 - Oct 21, 2024 Mother of a proud Steely Dan dick rider!!!!!!!!!!!! 5/5

I also thought this was Steely Dan's weakest album but man did I have an incredible time listening to this. Guess it's time for another complete discography listen!

Really enjoyed this! Not so many standout singles as Can't buy a thrill, but I'm also more familiar with that album. Generally a very pleasant listen, I really like Steely Dan! 4.5

The writing is good, the music outstanding, the vocals excellent. Lots of good songs on here.

This is a brilliant album, I find myself recognising several of these tunes from the Jim Carrey movie, Me, Myself and Irene. It's a short, impactful listen and one I will come back to over and over again.

Fire, left it playing all day 4.5 rounded up

Steely Dan is revolutionary.

Monkey song, 10/10

everyithing in its right place

- .... the kids just don't understand. -

i love me some classic yacht rock to ease the mind, and steely dan is a good example of that! groovy and relaxing rock music with moderate funk and jazz influence, with lyrics that are sometimes simple and emotional, sometimes batshit and surreal. it all blends together nicely throughout, consistently upbeat and engaging; tracks are progressive and complex but not too strange, making it perfect for the casual and the hardcore rock listener. the strums of the guitars paired with the lush rhodes electric piano create this... wonderful, wonderful album.

Never gets old. Love it.

Steely Dan at their finest. Wonderful jazz rock classics 50 years later.

always a fan of steely dan

Really fucking good

Había escuchado un par de canciones de Steely Dan y me parecían padres, pero no me esperaba este discazo. 33 minutos de pura onda.

When it comes to the Steely Dan classics, Aja is my favorite with Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam right behind it. I feel like Aja is their Dark side Of The Moon given its high production value and beautiful mix. I’ve always loved the idea of the band being basically two individuals with many extremely talented musicians at their disposal. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are notoriously known for being demanding of the musicians. Having multiple musicians audition each part until the pair were happy with the result, it’s madness but it really did yield some amazing songs. A fun game to play is “can you hear Michael McDonald’s distinct voice in the backing vocals?” A friend and I used to cover “Ricky Don’t Lose That Number” and I gained so much appreciation for the craft that went into the complex chord structures and leads. I have always been impressed with how they wrote such quirky and complex lyrics that were also so catchy. Overall, Steely Dan wasn’t in the business of making mediocre albums, they’re all top notch and Pretzel Logic is no exception, any major dude with tell you.

An ongoing debate with myself is which band has the most perfect catalogue in music. Minimum five albums. Talking Heads were in there, but True Stories I feel increasingly is a real step down. The Pixies first five are a contender. So, if like the Pixies we are just going on first runs and regarding comebacks after a long layoff as inadmissable, the Dan are up there with the Pixies and Roxy Music. This, like all 7 - 7! - from their first run, is pretty flawless.

Wasn't expecting to get my first 5/5 album so soon but wowee! I think I listened to this about 3 or 4 times within 24 hours because I loved it that much. Shout outs to Any Major Dude Will Tell You because I wanna slow dance in the kitchen whilst making pancakes on a Sunday morning with this song in the background, as well as East St. Louis Toodle-Oo for reminding me why I love jazz so much. What I loved most about the album I think is that to me it felt like the album was split into two. I just got two different vibes between the first half and the second half which I thought was super cool.

It’s like The Who meets Billy Joel, along with great instrumentation. Sounds amazing on my Beosound.

Steely Dan's the perfect mix of rock and jazz. Are there any better produced albums than SD albums? I don't think so. With Pretzel Logic, you can see a preview of future Steely Dan music for the next decade. Liked songs added: - Rikki Don't Lose That Number - Any Major Dude Will Tell You - Pretzel Logic

Fucking hell, wat een album. Ik kende enkel Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, maar wat een album. Heerlijk. Ik ben oprecht aan het twijfelen om deze op LP te kopen.

AAH ROCK AND JAZZ, LOVE IT ALREADY. The album cover is also reaaally original tbh, and funny in a way. Have never heard of Steely Dan tho, but those two genres fused muuust be good. Their other album covers are equally good apparently, different and stuff. Well I already have high expectations and I better not hear some basic ass sounds and production. First song, what a weird staaart, idk even know what sounds were those. Ohhh the vibe is great. Oh I don't like his voice tho. Song is the most listened on the album so this is their best work here that is appropriate for every ear. This feels like yacht rock too with a little jazz, but the jazz part will appear more in the next songs I hope. That piano thing is the best part, the instrument before he starts singing. The chorus is so chill and the way it matches up with the song's sonical side, love it. The break is kinda basic, but it suits the vibe. The lyrical delivery of the song tittle is just perfect. At the end it just stopped, didn't fade away. Second song, it's giving War. This song is equally good tbh. The chorus is less unforgettable, but still it's a whole vibe. The break is more original and fun, ooh the rock part came in with that guitar. The ending is the same as before, repeating only the song tittle. Third song, seems a little sad. He sings differently here and a little fast. Long ass song tittles btw. Chorus is not as good as the last two I'm afraid. It's kinda country now I think. The lyrical delivery is the best part. Outro is just the instrumental part which stops then makes a quick quirky sound and actually stops. Liked this one less 4th song, this one's vibey and more energetic. His voice is kinda unpleasing to me idk why. Sonically I love tho, it's a concept I never thought of checking out, jazz and rock I mean. A lot of lyrics I must say, makes me want to learn them. Chorus is not catchy somehow. I think I just heard a bridge and it was the best part. Outro is the same as before. Liked this one a lot, but not as much as the first two. 5th song, THIS IS NOSTALGIC AND IDK WHY. That piano is so gooooood I'm already addicted to it, the jazz part is less desirable, but necessary. It's fully instrumental too, lyrics would ruin it tbh. It's so funky in a way too. This would be in a jazz musical, saying that in a good way. Outro has a gong in it, weird and not fitting, but Kate Bush also finished a song like that too so. 6th song, fast start. Relatively long intro. Catchy rhymes I must say. Chorus is really good, and this is rare, but so are verses. The instrumentals getting louder when the chorus is sang is the best part. There was a bridge here too I think, and this was delivered in such a good way. The ending is chaotic jazz. 7th song, slow and kinda sad start. It's so short wow. This vibe change is giving how "believe me now" was in electric light orchestra's album iykyk. Loved the sonical part the best. Sounded like Beatles for a second too. 8th song, this is classic jazz for me, plus the lyrics are delivered that way. The chorus is less classic jazz and more rock which is basically their niche thing. This one's relatively long, at first I thought this would be the average duration, but apparently not. The break is long, which makes sense, but it's not that good and kind of is a bad addition. Second verse has the best sonical and lyrical interaction. Outro is as long as the break, but it fuses the rock and jazz perfectly so it's more fitting and enjoyable. 9th song, short song againn. Sonically it's catchy. Chorus is fun and singable. This is a grower song for me, I see how better it'll sound as a second listen. The vibe changes too many times and knowing when that happens would make me less confused and invested in the goodness of it. The shortness of it is quite good, dunno what else they would have done. 10th song, catchy as fuck start. The piano is sooo good here, it's repetitive in the best way possible. The way he sings is also original. I heard a violin playing in the background, cool touch. Has jingles at the end. Overall it feels like it needs more, but it sounded to permanent wave at some point, but I'll add it to the playlist since I see it as a grower. 11th song, this is giving if Bob Marley did jazz. After the verse pure jazz plays, it's so unexpected and sounds so heavenly. This one is oddly not as good, buuut the jazz part, it's so addictive. I added this one too, it's too good to leave out. All and all I reaaally enjoyed this. The production of the concept and I really liked every part of it. There was not a bad song on the album, just the ones that were relatively worse, which to me are just slow growers. No other way to rate this, but 5 stars, I had high expectations and they were met in the way I wanted to.

OH MY GOD I LOVE STEELY DAN!!!

7/29/24. Love Steely Dan, I think I've listened to this once before, but this style of music and very enjoyable and fun to me. I can never get bored of these songs!

I'd put every Steely Dan album on this list if I were in charge

Any Steely Dan album is great

As twisty and salty as the food in its name. Maybe their best album?

I fuckin love Steely Dan

Brilliant and very tight

Really cool. Awesome instrumentals and every song sounded distinct. The longer instrumental sections seemed justified and still managed to keep my interest through their progression. The range of chords was really interesting to me. I enjoyed the fast pace. Many songs saved to my playlist and I didn't get bored at all throughout the album. Wish I'd found this a lot sooner. This might be my first 5 star. Highlights: Rikki Don't Lose That Number Parker's Band Pretzel Logic With A Gun

Seriously how can people not like this? It’s pure fun and joy

Not my fave Steely Dan album but you simply can’t deny it.

I was not familiar with this Steely Dan album, but really enjoyed it. East St Louis Toodle-oo made me smile.

First time really listening to Steely Dan. They're about as edgy as a bowl of custard, but the quality of this album is undeniable. Well worth the listen and I'm sure I'll give it another spin in the future.

At my lowest hours, Any Major Dude Will Tell You has renewed me.

I'm in my mid-40s now so I'm required by law to be a massive Steely Dan fan.

Favorite Tracks: Rikki Don’t Lose That Number Night By Night East St. Louis Toodle-Oo

As a Dan fan, this is one of their albums that I’ve listened to the least, individual songs aside. With that being said, it’s still love it. My favorite songs are “Night By Night,” “Any Major Dude Will Tell You,” “Barrytown,” and “With A Gun.” The album loses some steam in the second half, but it’s still fantastic.

Great album to put on and think about a simpler time that may or may not have really existed. Easy to listen to music that seems simple at first but becomes better with repeat listens.

Steely Dan is just all time. Never skip. Incredible.

Fantastic! The best that the 70s sound had, compressed into a single album. I was won over at the exact moment the chords of Rikki Don't Lose That Number began to sound. Many artists from my homeland (Brazil) speak very highly of Steely Dan. This was the perfect opportunity for me to delve deeper into their work!

Man I love Steely Dan. What a wonderful, colorful and fun album. Pleasantly surprised by the lyrics and the plucky and funky guitars riffs. Paints a beautiful picture. Even the quieter moments like on East St. Louis Toodle-Oo where there are no lyrics, the instrumentals put you right there. Standouts: Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Night By Night, Barrytown, Through With Buzz, Pretzel Logic, and Charlie Freak.

Really liked the ballad style music.

As I’ve grown further into adulthood, I’ve found myself more and more frequently wanting to go back and kick the shit out of the younger version of myself. I was such an idiot about so many things, closed-minded and sheltered, irresponsible, etc. Far down the list in terms of severity, is a pre-existing notion that Steely Dan was lame/uncool to the point that I would tease my friend Matt about how he enjoyed listening to them (sorry Matt). Now with my big-boy-brain I can safely declare that Steely Dan is awesome. This record is a perfect example of their smooth production and unique songwriting. This was a blast to listen to all the way through. Twists and turns, thick piano lines mixing in with lush arrangement and vocals that complement the feel in the perfect way all combine for a fantastic experience. Love it. I have this on vinyl because years ago a coworker was liquidating some of his collection and I grabbed this because I thought it would be funny to have an album from the dad band with a pretzel on the cover, and I’m excited to give it an unironic spin later. Top tracks: Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Night By Night, Barrytown, Parker’s Band, Pretzel Logic, With A Gun, Charlie Freak

Fuck you, they’re great

9/10. All around fantastic album. Put a few of the songs on the 5⭐️ list.

Always loved Steely Dan. Still songs in here I haven't heard, because I think I listened more to a compilation album.

This is thoroughly listen-to-able!

Less awesome than Cant buy a thrill but still so good!!!

This was an amazing album, I thoroughly enjoyed it Top tracks: Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Pretzel Logic

incredible

Wunderschöne Musik, Donald Fagans unverwechselbare Stimme, ein abwechslungsreiches Album auf dem Weg vom Roch zum Jazzrock.

FUCK, such a cool project. It's got this big blues focus but still retains the jazzy elements they normally bring. It feels front loaded but the second half explores more styles which I loved. I wasn't gonna go 5 but it's just clawed into me.

Now we got the bees knees baby! Technical mastery combined with top notch production quality and complex, catchy songwriting just for good measure. This album is perhaps the best and most appropriate example of a certified classic album. Sure, it’s dad rock, but every song here is an ear worm. And every time you come back to it, you’re hearing new layers and discovering something new to love about the music.

mr. pretzel

In my top 15 of all time.

always nice to hear that album...

Chill! Goede muziek

Not knowing what to expect beyond the first track I was already familiar with this was a pleasant surprise. Had the album on repeat all day.

When I saw this was another Steely Dan album I rolled my eyes so hard I nearly toppled over, but how pleasantly surprised I was by Preztel Logic (terrible name!) I loved this! It put me in such a great mood and although it was a bit cheesy in parts I really got into it! It’s not quite a 5, but I’m making it 5 stars because it’s close and I’ll want to come back to this one later! Or I’m high on paint fumes? Regardless, it was heaps better than the last Steely Dan!

Love Steeley Dan. Band of my misspent youth!

Another fantastic Steely Dan record. I really love the classic rock focused sound on this one, and every tune is a fun to listen to.

This is a great album. Steely Dan knows how to do it.

Wow, I've never really listened to steely Dan before. I'm not sure I'd like any of their other albums as much as this one because it looks like this one has a much higher focus on compact, quick songs and less extended solos/jazz sessions/prog Rock. That being said I found these all tuneful and sonically interesting. I was happy to listen to this one 3 times and had almost half the album make my favorites list!

So great, but still only my 3rd favorite Steely Dan album (after Katy Lied and Countdown to Ecstasy). 11 concise songs, 34 minutes, the last disc with any semblance of being a typical “rock band”. Some admittedly weird tracks for a pop/rock album, but great rhythms, solos, and arrangements throughout. One monster hit (Rikki), one that should’ve done better (title track), and a number of others that would be great to hear on Classic Rock if they’d ever play them. As with most of their LPs it doesn’t seem like a “guitar album” on the surface (only The Royal Scam qualifies), but there is so much tasty guitar work here throughout. Lots of it from original members Jeff Baxter (who joined The Doobie Brothers soon after this was done) and Danny Dias, but Walter Becker, primarily a bass player, has some shining lead guitar moments here. Looking at the track listing before playing it today, my sense was that Side 2 was weaker than Side 1, but nah, it’s all great.

Amazing. So many differing styles of music... but in a steely dan way

Such a dynamic and versatile album

# Playlist track - Any Major Dude # Notes - My first Steely Dan album, and it's a great one. I've been hearing this over and over the entire day. - Super impressive breadth! Overall the album goes steadily on a ballad-like rhythm, but then it throws weird and cool tracks like "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" at you from outta nowhere. - 5/5 will hear again!

This suburban dad in socks and sandals absolutely wants to discuss grass-layering techniques and then segue into the delicate nuances of Steely Dans’ jazz rock. From funky rhythms to ripping guitar medley. The horns are blaring and the keyboards are squealing. This is musical magic, ladies and gentleman.

Classic for a reason.

-surprisingly jazzy -initial 4-track run is fantastic -back-end a lil lacking imo Fav tracks: Rikki Don't Lose That Number Night By Night Any Major Dude Will Tell You Barrytown Parker's Band Pretzel Logic Least fav: East st. Louis Toodle-Oo

More of a 4.75 star album than 5 - not as front to back perfect as Aja- but still a masterpiece… love the wackiness of East St. Louis tootaloo

Classic

average steely dan chad

Steely Dan’s music is just so slick and smooth at all times, I don’t know how they do it Right on the edge between 4 and 5 I feel like the last song was not as great as most the rest, but I liked the rest a lot

ta prou bien, muy ir a almorzar en un cadillac el dorado mentre portes pantalons de campana, groovi que diuen algunos, no? ta be ta be

AMAZING ALBUM AND BAND

This was an easy listen, I love Steely Dan! This album has eleven songs packed into 34 minutes and there is nothing here that is padding or filler. It was over before I knew it and I was left wanting more.

listened to first track while peeing i like this SAVED AFTER hearing beginning of night by night this is so groovy i love my god i love this album so bad already I LOVE EASY ST LOUIS i loved this albnum so much i saved most songs

Duh. 5 Stars. Is there any music this good and this weird? No, there isn't.

Five stars. 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' and 'Any Major Dude Will Tell You' are great pop songs without sacrificing subtlety. 'Parker's Band' is probably the most joyful track Steely Dan ever did, culminating in a blast of Bird-like horn lines spinning into the air. 'Night By Night' contains one of the Dan's coldest lyrics - "If the dawn patrol gotta tell you twice, they're gonna do it with a shotgun." I often feel that Pretzel Logic is one of Steely Dan's flintier and more unyielding albums. Perhaps so. Still a remarkable blend of rock, jazz and pop sensibilities.

Rikki Don't Lose That Number - Truly a classic for very good reasons, the piano and voices are pure magic, and the guitar adds a plus to everything. Night By Night - It truly sounds like a fun night in the city, it feels like bigger things are yet to come. Any Major Dude Will Tell You - The guitar is the more noticeable thing, I just love how is it used, love this song. Barrytown - Harmony can't get any better than this. East St. Louis Toodle-Oo - I was more than ready to say "OH GOD IT DID GET BETTER", but still an amazing song. Parker's Band - Sounds like The Who. Through With Buzz - Groovy :D. Pretzel Logic - OH GOD IT DID GET BETTER. With A Gun - Western cowboys but rock jazz (I think is rock jazz). Charlie Freak - The only bad thing of this song, is that is too short, 2 and a half minutes weren't enough, I NEED MORE. Monkey In Your Soul - Tha saxophone is just amazing, I want more saxo, MORE. We don't need music to be to progressive, or conciuse, sometimes is just about the mood and happiness, and this album gets it. Top 3 Rikki Don't Lose That Number Any Major Dude Will Tell You Pretzel Logic

Thank you for this one. I have always been haunted by “Every Major Dude Will Tell You” so it was a happy moment to revisit it. Had it on a playlist but must have been deleted or removed.

chill as hell my favorite

great one!!!

was en vibe omg i loved it

This is in my top 5 1970s Steely Dan albums. Squeaky clean production, masterful execution. 4.5/5

First listen seemed like a for sure 5 star rating. Second listen confirmed it. 5 stars. fantastic. East St. Louis Toodle-oo was so great

I wore out this album when new.

Not my favorite of theirs, but excellent compared to what else was out there

Love the unique voice of Fagen

It's just stunning to me how great all Steeley Dan is.

A milestone!
