Steely Dan

One of the best produced albums all time

Amazing! A perfect follow up to SD's debut.

Oh boy was I happy to start my week with some Dan. I'm not sure how anyone could listen to this and not enjoy it. Just some great musicians making some sweet warm tasty tunes. I'm more familiar with some of their earlier albums, and Aja - and honestly I think this ranks up there with the best of them. Absolute banger of an album, and one of the first times since starting this where I felt an album ended too short! Not a second of this record drags on. Loved it from start to finish.

Whoa…I did not expect to like this album as much as I did! I have a big handful of Steely Dan songs that I like, but before this, none from this album. “Ricky don’t loose that number” is so overplayed that I don’t count it. But the rest of the album is full of amazingness.

Richtung Soulmusik vielleicht? Soul-Rock? Softer Soul-Rock? Was sagt denn Wikipedia? Jazz-Rock, Pop-Rock.

This album was so satisfying. Relaxing vocals on top of simple guitar. Reminds me of Toro y Moi but a little more old school and contemporary.

Not really one of my SD favorites but still a 5 star

Album 216 of 1001 Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic Rating : 5 / 5 (Rounded Up) Favorite Tracks : Rikki Don't Lose That Number I like Steely Dan. There are lots who feel other wise, but I'm going to stick by them. This isn't their best album, in my opinion but is enjoyable all the way through. Love their sound.

Dad music in the best way possible. This was the first album I got; if they’re all this good, this is gonna be a wild ride.

Great instrumentals, I liked it. It was a vibe tbh, and you could dance to it

Really good with lots of variety and fun

Love this one. Great lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation.

Other than the vocalist who would have thought that this was SD. Very little of what came before or after is imprinted on this album. Save of course the striking songwriting. It took a while to get into the album on release following on from Countdown which remains my favourite of theirs. This is a better album.

WITH A GUN WITH A GUN YOU WILL BE WHAT YOU ARE JUST THE SAME. DID YOU PAY THE OTHER MAN WITH THE PIECE IN YOUR HAND, AND LEAVE HIM LYING IN THE RAIN?

Love it, Steely Dan, is the Best!

one of their best

By far the best of their full band era. Every song fires on all cylinders with that distinctive sharp production quality that was unmatched for the era. 34 minutes blows by quickly.

Can’t beleieve I’ve never listed to this one all the way through. Epic.

This was my second Steely Dan album to be assigned. My first was Countdown to Ecstasy, which I gave five stars. I liked this album, and I thought it was great, although I didn't enjoy it as much as I did Countdown to Ecstasy. Overall, I missed the lengthier songs, and I missed the more meandering instrumental jamming that was present on the previous album. Several of the songs on here really stuck out to me: -the guitar on "Night by Night" was fantastic, and I loved the way it has that kind of stutter sound to it about 2/3 of the way through the song -as much as I missed the jamming on this album, East St. Louis Toodle-Oo was great, with its wah-wah guitar and gloomy piano -I really enjoyed the varied guitar sounds the band utilized as well; the bluesy sound of "Night by Night" goes right into the softer strumming of "Any Major Dude Will Tell You," and neither song feels out of place -the best part of this album though was "Barrytown." I thought the lyrics about fearing change and the unknown were great, and the rhyming structure of rhyming carry with barry was absolutely brilliant. The lyric "Don't believe I'm taken in by stories I have heard. I just read the Daily News and swear by every word" was absolute genius -the piano and strings on "Through With Buzz" were awesome too -"With a Gun" was probably my second favorite song; its bluesy sound was perfect for the lyrics, and really felt like the band's take on western ballad Hell, now that I typed this out, I realize how much I liked this album. I was going to give it four stars, but I think it's worthy of five. I can't wait for Aja and Can't Buy a Thrill.

A multi faceted and sprawling masterpiece where they do it all, I esp like the country and folk touches.

Pop, jazz/rock fusion that is as tight as it is loose. The compositions are reminiscent of Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock with guitar and clav panned hard right and left on some tracks to give the similar bouncy feel. The musical choices are innovative whilst still being faithful to classic jazz and blues styles, with “East St. Louis Toodle-oo” being a clear tribute to Duke Ellington. The songwriting is heartfelt without being cheesy and relates to the day to day trials and tribulations of the average American, tackling subjects like drug addiction, living paycheque to paycheque and anxiety due to life not going your way. The storytelling makes the characters in each song very vivid and makes each track an interesting listen. Overall, the album is captivating and engaging and is a truely innovative album.

Many classics

Riki Don't Lose that Number puts this album at at least 4 stars by itself

Wonderful collection of intelligent sometimes biting songs that shine in the music's colorful variety. Super cool!

Steely Dan has a really unique voice/sound. I like this album and would definitely give it a second listen. Introducing me to a lot more Steely Dan songs I didn't know. I ended up listening to this album probably 4-5 more times throughout the rest of the day. Definitely a great album

Timeless album that has great songs.

Really love steely dan, and this is one of my personal favourites of theirs (up there with Aja, Gaucho, Can't Buy a Thrill and Kid Charlemane). The opener is one of the Dan's strongest overall tracks and the album stays consistent after it. Even shorter tracks like "Through With the Buzz" still have things to offer. Furthermore, as with all of their tracks the lyrics are interesting and often take some additional thought to decipher. Favourite Tracks: Rikki Dont Lose That Number, Any Major Dude Will Tell You Barrytown, East St. Louis Toodle-oo, Through With the Buzz, Pretzel Logic, Charlie Freak

Great sound. Definitely feeling a specific vibe and era.

another really great album, and only a week after the last steely dan album it generated for us! what a treat! the jazz-rock fusion works so well for SD's 70s output... i have no notes, keep doing your thing guys. favorites: rikki don't lose that number, any major dude will tell you, pretzel logic, charlie freak

Didn’t expect to think this but honestly one of the best catchiest smartest pop albums I’ve ever heard

Brilliant. 5 stars.

Steely Dan just could not possibly be more down my alley in terms of music interests. Extreme focus on instrumentals, including a strong emphasis on horns. Jazz-blues feel throughout. This is what I want to listen to with a beer in hand while barbequing. Not sure what that says about me, but it's the truth. Favorite tracks: East St. Louis Toodle-Oo, Pretzel Logic

Funny how your music style changes huh? This band, I despised a couple of years ago. I hated their jazzy sounds and vocal style. But after several tries, things slowly started to connect, and now, I love them. And this might be my favourite of them! 9 out of 10

Perhaps my favorite Steely Dan album or at least the one I listen to probably the most. Nice balance or rock and jazz. Some great guitar work.

A pretty nice and fun rock album with plenty of jazz elements. I've heard of Steely Dan, but not heard any of these songs before. It was a pleasant listen, and the harmonies in the vocals and generally tight production moved this from just another 70s rock album, into a great 70s rock album. Favourite: Rikki Don't Lose That Number

Album has aged really well. Still fun to listen to.

Thought it was great. Definitely something my dad listened to.

Needs to be longer

Lovely songs for driving or chilling in the garden. Songs sound familiar - like you know them already - but in a good way! Sounds effortlessly cool, although I appreciate there was probably a lot of work put in to make it sound so chilled. Exceptional work

Freakin awesome

This was the first Dan album I ever purchased, from Ashwoods, while on leave from Newcastle Uni in 1974. I was already in love with the band’s biggest ever hit single, Rikki, Don’t Lose That Number. My knowledge of jazz was not great and it would be at least 20 years before I discovered that the piano intro to the song ( and, for that matter, the album) was totally lifted from the Horace Silver track, Song For My Father. This was the album that showed just how strong Becker & Fagen’s love of & influence by jazz was. The Duke Ellington composition, East St. Louis Toodle-oo is the only cover Steely Dan ever recorded. To get the sound of a muted trumpet on the original, Becker sang through a Talkbox, while Jeff Baxter used a pedal-steel for the trombone part. It may be an instrumental, but it never feels out-of-place here & has always been a highlight for me. Parker’s Band is inspired by Bird. They might have recorded this album on the west-coast, but Steely Dan are definitely from the Big Apple. Not that they didn’t use some of the west coast’s finest on this album. Jeff Porcaro was only 19 when called in to play on Parker’s Band & Night By Night, the latter which featured Jeff Baxter’s fiercest solo on the album. The flipside of Rikki, Don’t Lose That Number was Any Major Dude Will Tell You - one of the best tracks on the album & the reason behind the conspiracy theory that the Coen Bothers’ film The Big Lebowski is a coded tribute to Steely Dan, & this album in particular ( you know - The Dude). The whole of Side 1 is particularly strong. Side 2 has highlights but is not as immediately engaging. I know this album backwards but I still loved playing it 3 times in a row while I pondered it’s greatness. It’s not my favourite Steely Dan, but still great.

A masterpiece.

Actually pretty good 👍

Outstanding writing. So much generational talent in this band. Their melodies don't really grab me for the most part, but the instrumentation is top notch.

Steely Dan is in my top five. Perfect.

Pretzel Logic was one of the first records I owned on vinyl - so this is easily the Steely Dan album I’m most familiar with. I won’t try to even begin analyzing Becker and Fagen’s obscene lyrical universe but I’m always intrigued by the vague hints of obscure meaning in the songwriting. Steely Dan might come across as just a 70’s pop rock band but the jazzy complexity of the songs, air tight instrumentation and warm production makes the duo anything but ordinary. If this is dad rock then I’m ready to settle down with a wife and a couple of kids.

Aw yeah, here we go!

Perfect Steely Dan album, but aren't they all?

What a wonderful surprise! I loved all the songs, I'm already saving the album to listen to later, more calmly.

I love Steely Dan, but I'm less familiar with this particular album (of course I am very familiar with Ricki, Don't Lose That Number), so it was a delight to listen to this one a few times through. Apparently this was their last album made as a "touring" band - after this they became entirely "studio musicians." You can hear them edging towards that aesthetic here. Their songwriting, musicianship, and arrangement is just top-notch. I love the way they incorporate jazzy riffs with pop in such a precise but also fun way. These guys were just so. freaking. good. 5/5

A classic, loved every track

All the hits. A nice time capsule of what by 6th grade teacher was into.

Steely Dan transitioning into their studio perfectionist mode. I could probably do without "East St Louis Toodle-Oo" but I'll forgive them that indulgence for the smooth brilliance of the rest of the album.

J'ai autant qu eCountdown to ecstasy. 4.95

A great road trip album.

Musical masters, these blokes. SO MANY wicked twists n turns in their chord progressions, tastier note choices than anyone. Fuck yes.

This is one of my favorite Steely Dan albums. It's such a smooth listen, front to back. Laid back and refined all at once, with a rich, warm sound. This is probably one of the Dan's most accessible and perfectly realized works as well. No flaws, really. Lyrically, I like the combo of Donald Fagen's detached, incisive writing with some surprise moments of empathy and feeling. It's uncharacteristic for Fagen, and not something I look for in his songwriting, but I kind of dug it today. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Pretzel Logic, Night by Night, Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Charlie Freak, Barrytown, East St. Louis Toodle-Oo, Through with Buzz, Parker's Band, Monkey in Your Soul, With a Gun

Amazing, would listen again

I really enjoyed this album. I think the album is strong throughout the whole album. A couple of dips here and there, but this album is a bop and cements me as a Steely Dan fan. Favorite song: Rikki Don't Lose That Number Worst song: Charlie Freak

"Pretzel Logic" is the third studio album by Steely Dan. It was written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and besides those two would be the last album to feature members Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (guitars), Denny Dias (guitar) and Jim Hodder (drums but he didn't play much on this album). It was recorded in LA and there were a lot of other guest studio musicians. It was also the last album the band would tour. The music itself had shorter songs than their previous albums. The one thing that is a strength of this album is the wide variety of styles they play: pop, jazz, blues, that California laid- back rock and even country. The lyrics and story telling is also a strength. Their biggest hit and first single "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" opens with that piano line. The songs goes from pop to blues to jazz. Jim Gordon's drums are great. It is actually about Becker's crush on the pregnant wife of one of his professors. This song along with "Band on the Run" is probably the first songs I can remember when they came out. "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" has a groovy piano, jazzy guitar and a California sound. Plus, it might be only song to mention the mythical creature the squonk. The singer is consoling one of his friends who is going through tough times. "Parker's Band" begins the second side and is about going and listening to Charlie Parker. Is it also about doing drugs (heroin)??? Jazzy guitar. Charlie Parker-influenced riffs. "Pretzel Logic" was the other album single and is more bluesy rock with some funk. Great pedal guitar. Time travel is mentioned a lot. Also, the bands' distate for touring. I didn't know Steel Dan had country in them but they did here and it's one of their best songs on the album in "With a Gun." Country slide guitar. One of the best stories about a founder of a clinic which he steals from, murders someone and is on the run. Another hidden highlight is "Charlie Freak" with its intricate piano and droning guitar giving an eerie feel. And it should given the song tells the story of a drug-addict who sells his last possession, a gold ring, to buy what would be his last fix. I enjoyed this album again; it had been awhile since I listened to it. I don't know if I could ever really rank Steely Dan albums but this one would be near the top. The variety of styles is quite impressive.

4.6 - Of the four Steely Dan records, I've reviewed this one is definitely my favorite. Unlike "Aja" this one feels loose and less clinical though the arrangements are still incredibly tight. And unlike "Can't Buy A Thrill", these songs haven't been overplayed on classic rock radio. I especially love the duelling saxophones at the end of "Parker's Band" and the cool instrumental "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo." In 34 minutes, these 11 songs provide a bouncy, funky, perfectly packaged listen.

I was excited to listen because I knew their hits but had never listened to a full album of theirs. This album was great. One thing that stuck out to me was how immaculate the production was. Everything sounds so crisp and clean and every note sounded intentional. I only listened to the album one time through but I am planning to listen again on a 1001 free weekend.

Rikki Dont loose that number

Love steely Dan

Not surprisingly liked this one. Enjoyed pretty much all the songs.

Steely Dan just never fails to entertain. Great harmonies, great musicians, big variety of song styles and a great production. Top! 👍🏻

Jazz lite rock

Fantastic. Rikki is good and East St Louis toodle-op is 👌

Having listened to this a lot while growing up, I started having an aversion to Steely Dan - something gave me the creeps about their music when I heard it. While this is a psychological problem for later times, I realize in relistening that they were an extremely musically diverse band. They are definitely in the realm of jazz, and would be considered a sort of pop jazz today. Not sure what they were considered back then. Good use of piano, some auxiliary percussion ... a lot of nice components to their music.

Had not listened to it before. Had listened to individual songs, but not the album in any sort of cohesive manor. Overall enjoyed the album, some songs were forgettable while other songs I found myself dancing along with lyrics I had never heard before 5/5 Will listen again

Have you ever seen a squonks tears?

Really lit and awesome. 9.5/10 to me ears

Steely Dan is always in

Great album. Some absolute classic songs that I love to hear

5, so catchy

I liked this a lot. I had only ever heard the first song on this album before. I didn’t really care for the instrumental song but liked everything else. Pretzel logic has a great solo

The last Steely Dan “band” album. Perhaps that accounts for the balance between studio wizardry and live chops. Still working on their special blend of rock, blues and jazz, the songs were tighter and more focused than before, yet still had the ambiguous lyrics that had many college students up guessing. This could be the best release (Aja is in the running) from one of my favorite bands.

Love this early Steely Dan record. A little less jazzy than later albums but a lot of great songs.

goood shit!

oh man and the hits keep coming! I am such a sucker for this Steely Dan sound. Barrytown, Night By Night are great first side sleepers and the East St. Louis Toodle-OO is a really fun jazz cover. Parkers Band and Charlie Freak are both bouncing jazz fueled pop sendups. Its just such a short stinger of an album.

idk yet

Amazing

Loved it, good music for chilling

This album is damn near perfect. It has tight vocal harmonies, amazing musicianship, and is a masterclass in melody. Stylistically, this album covers everything from bossa nova, to jazz, and pop. Similarly, the arrangement is top notch and the album is very produced.

So this is a classy album from a classy band, although I have to admit that I didn't get into Steely Dan until I heard The Royal Scam. Messrs Fagen & Becker are consummate Muso's and this is a Muso's delight. I love "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Pretzel Logic" from this little masterpiece.

Now this was a great album, wasn't expecting that from whatever the album cover is. I've never heard of Steely Dan, which is kind of strange to me from how big they seem. I think I'm a fan now. Some huge bangers - "Rikki Don't Lose that Number", "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" (I love those wah-wahs), "With a Gun", "Charlie Freak". Doesn't overstay its welcome and ends on a good song streak - the last three songs slap back-to-back.

Steely Dan has become a favorite

Gostei bastante, tem uns instrumentais bem interessantes.

Suprisingly chill album that was the perfect fitting for a rainy afternoon.

I know of Steely Dan, but the only album that I have ever listened to of theirs is a greatest hits compilation. I actually didn't think that I really was that big of a fan, but I really enjoyed this album.

Maybe it's because I heard Steely Dan a lot as a kid, but there's something about this album that seems very grown-up to me, like something a friend's cool (but not too cool) parents might listen to. I was surprised to learn that Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were in their mid-20s when this was released. They sound older than I will ever feel. AND I love it! It's not at all gloomy but they seem like they take the music seriously. There's interesting percussion and great guitar throughout. Rikki Don't Lose that Number is a terrific pop song. Pretzel Logic has a groove (but I'm scratching my head at the lyrics about minstrel shows). OK, maybe I lied a little --- Charlie Freak's lyrics are pretty gloomy but the dark lyrics are juxtaposed with a rollicking Linus-and-Lucy-like piano and some jingle bells. And I love the bass and sax in Monkey in Your Soul. At a short and sweet 34 minutes, songs are varied and interesting and I didn't feel like there was too much filler. It zipped along.

PRETZEL LOGIC is a great Steely Dan album! I hadn’t heard it before but I’m very glad I have now. I love “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.” Deservedly the most well-known song on the album. But I actually like “Any Major Dude Will Tell You” better - it’s my favorite song on here. I love the whole tone of this album, with things like a fun, jazzy instrumental (“East St. Louis Toodle-Oo”) that show Steely Dan’s great talent without taking themselves too seriously. Other favorites include the groovy “Parker’s Band” and “With A Gun” and its country sounds. I have it in my head that Steely Dan albums are hard to listen to. I’m not sure why I think that. Perhaps that thought came from listening to some forgotten album of theirs in my past. That certainly isn’t the case with this album. Very enjoyable!

9/10. Far from my favorite Steely Dan album, but one that I have grown to appreciate nonetheless. I'm still not the biggest fan of Rikki, but songs like Any Major Dude and Charlie Freak have really grown on me over time, as has the sound of the album as a whole, and while there are individual tracks that I don't love, they don't overstay their welcome either. I still resent that this was included at the expense of other Dan albums, but I may yet bump it to a 10/10 if the mood strikes me.

It may be my least favorite of the golden age Dan albums, but it’s still a 10 for me every time I listen to it.

Brilliant

Finally, an album I own! Steely Dan released some pretty fantastic albums in the 70's and all of them are worth seeking out! At least two of their records, Can't Buy A Thrill and Pretzel Logic I would consider "must hear" and the greatest hits album will fill in the rest. When I was in school when they were at the height of their career, I didn't understand the appeal, but I'm older and wiser now and to me their music exemplifies the best of the mid-70's. Highly recommended!

Steely Dan.. what can I say. I thought I didn't know any of their songs until I started listening to their albums...I realized I knew the majority.

Funky 80s album, was pretty good!

Night by Night and Charlie Freak are out of this world

Excellent as I remember

Brilliant!

Love it!

Surprised to see that so few of his songs are 'hits' given how famous he seems to be in my eyes.

What a coincidence. I was playing Steely Dan to Sam last week - I chose Aja. This is great and I played it on rotation all day and the rest of the weekend. Fantastic production, these guys were perfectionists. Not unusual for them to change the whole band (they use session musicians, the 'band' was really just Donald Fagen and Walter Becker) from track to track. Songs from the seamy side hidden behind jaunty tunes. Brilliant.

Goat shit

Banger after banger

1970s folk rock, me like!

brilliant album

Ahh - I thought this was going to be really weird but I recognize this song.

Rock californiano setentero, totalmente virtuoso y multiinstrumentado, con guitarreos gigantes, pianos y cuerdas. Arreglos jazz y funkies. Supervoces. Genial, muy bueno.

Really liked

Nice to listen to. Enjoyed

Pretty good album with some catchy songs

This album was an amazing suggestion from this project. I absolutely loved almost every song, even not knowing anything about the band before.

A fundamental must-listen for anyone who wants to have an understanding of the development of music since the 1960s. Old in temperament, new in style and substance. Even in 2023 it is a masterpiece Picks: Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Night By Night.

Fan-fuckin-tastic

I mean cmon, this album is basically a 10/10. It comes close to Aja for me but doesn’t quite surpass it. Jazz rock perfection. Favorite song: Rikki Don’t Lose That Number Least favorite song: None

Amtlich. Steely Dan also. Über-Platte.

their 3 best album

I really hope Rikki doesn’t lose that number. Funky rhythm guitar, cool horn section. Makes me interested in the band again.

Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan - I LOVE Any Major Dude Will Tell You. Favorite song by far - East St. Louis Toodle-Oo made me feel like I was at a fair in the 1800s

Sex on a record.

...And here come the pretzels Didnt like it as much as Aja. Think that was more assured and had more of an identity. Ricky Dont Lose That Number is stand out. Its all listenable. But cant get a 5 this time. I wanna listen to Aja again now.

Maturing is coming to grips with the fact that Steely Dan might be the greatest band in history. 8/10

Can’t believe it, but i enjoyed this from front to back.

4 It was a vibe

Very feel good record. They always come through with some breezy melodies and fun instrumentation. Super easy to throw on and vibe to on a summer evening.

I like Steely Dan. Four stars.

Another Steely Dan I've finally gotten the hang of. I did a down-n-back listen of their first 6 albums and now get a few of them here. Solid album and am starting to get why people said they had 6 straight bangers.

Best leuk album

Fun fact: Steely Dan is my dad's favorite band. And ya what's not to like? They're not _amazing_ but I like their music.

Yesssss I liked it I didn't think I would

I'm learning that I really love Steely Dan. The singing on this album feels worse than the other ones that have come up, though, and I'm not sure if that's because the singing usually gets buried in all of the excellent music going on, or if something else is different about the singing. The great parts of Steely Dan are still there, which is mostly the excellent combo of jazz harmonic structure and instruments in rock music. But it feels like it's missing the excellence that you can hear in the other albums. It's still very good but doesn't compare to the other Steely Dan albums. Favorite Song(s): Night by Night

Awesome

The album as a whole was good and very much listenable. Some of it was kind of boring but Rikki reminds me of my mom so the album is getting a 4.

Not a bad song on this eclectic jazz rock album.

"Pretzel Logic" is probably the Steely Dan album that I play the least. In fact, I play it even less often than their somewhat uneven debut. It is the final album by Steely Dan, a band that gradually fell apart during the recording sessions. From then on, Becker and Fagen worked on perfecting their sound with a variety of studio musicians. At the same time, it’s an album that looks to the past with tracks such as the Duke Ellington cover ‘East St. Louis Toodle-Oo’ and the re-recorded early Donald Fagen track ‘Barrytown’, and jumps back and forth between genres: Blues, jazz, rock and pop. The best tracks are somewhat hidden on the album. These are certainly not the well-known single 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' and the very popular B-side 'Any Major Dude Will Tell You', but rather the deep cuts 'Night by Night' (a blueprint for Toto, featuring a very young Jeff Porcaro on drums), the proggy (!) 'Charlie Freak' and the short and sweet 'Through with Buzz', which, with its string arrangement, almost sounds like an US version of the Electric Light Orchestra. Perhaps the most quintessential Steely Dan track on the album is the walking blues track 'Pretzel Logic', which already hints at the band’s future sound. Interestingly, the predecessor “Countdown to Ecstasy” sounds closer to the future SD sound than this album does. Overall, "Pretzel Logic" was a commercial breakthrough, at least compared to its less successful predecessor, but I just can’t bring myself to love this album unconditionally to the very end. What it has in common with all Dan albums is the perfect sound, the musical mastery, and – which should by no means be overlooked – the fantastic solos by Walter Becker, Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias.

Rather than what I have done before where I listen to each song, pause, then give my thoughts, Ima just let this one rip till the end and keep a record of my favourite songs to talk about at the end. "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Night by Night", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", "Parker's Band", "Pretzel Logic" and "Monkey In Your Soul". All of these tracks I loved for pretty much the same set of reasons; interesting guitar riffs, solid arrangements with vocals and instrumental sections and fun lyrics. Sonically groovy yet heartfelt. There were some duds where I got frustrated with it's 'nearly-there-ness', such as "Through with Buzz" and "Charlie Freak", the latter especially, as it's introduction of the sleigh bells was pretty interesting. "Monkey In Your Soul" ended a bit abruptly, making it an odd choice for the last song on the album. All in all, I had a good time with this album. Most if not all of my criticisms feel a little nitpicky on this one; I enjoyed it.

I mean it’s steely Dan of course it’s good. Never listened to this album before, but I like it. Top tracks: Rikki don’t lose that number, toodle-oo, with a gun

Really nice album, took me a couple of listens but it's a definite yes from me. Soft rock with some lovely vocals and guitar work. Rikki, Night by Night, Major Dude and the last few tracks are all great. 3.5 rounded up.

Major Dude Vibes

Steely Dan is such a vibe man. The production on this is not as silky smooth as it is on their other records, but I’m positive! And I say positive things. Closer to a 3 than a 5. Trans.

Great band. Lots of stuff going on but I enjoyed it.

Pleasantly surprised by this one, hadn’t heard of the artist before, some catchy songs in there, very listenable

Its not Aja, but its still Steely Dan. 4/5

Not sure why Steely Dan gets so much hate on this site. This is another very good album.

This was entertaining to listen to. 4/5

Good good

Nice production. Also a nice collection of songs, but not any real hits.

Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands. I generally like all of their albums. This isnt necessarily my favorite, nor is it my favorite period of the band, but I can still appreciate this. Some of their best songs are on this album, but some lesser songs are there too.

The music of my high school daze. The harmonies and instrument arrangements are superb. Mellow? Maybe, but I still love Rikki, and then the funk of Night by Night. The jazzy funkiness pop of it all flew me through two listens. I'll not be back for a third ..onward and upward

Lovely instrumentation. The harmonies are quite nice. East St. Louis Toodle-Oo is fun!

Lots of hate for these boys and I kinda get it, era specific and locked. But goddamn it's clean.

Loved listing to this type of music when I went on my winter walks to the pretzel stand in Central Park.

A fun steely dan album, and I like them, but there's better albums of theirs than this one. It was still good though, rikki don't lose that number is a classic.

I thought it was going to be country and it wasn't. Yippee!!

Yeah I mean. Class.

Oh cool, another final album! It's time for my final Steely Dan album of the project. I've grown to like this guys quite a bit, but unfortunately, I think we're ending on the weakest of the 4 albums of theirs on this list. Well, okay, I would say that that's unfortunate, if it weren't for the fact that Pretzel Logic is still really good. Yeah, this is only the weakest one by a bit. I still really like this. Not as much as an album like Aja, of course, but Pretzel Logic's still got some great songs on it. I mean, this thing opens with "Rikki Don't Lose That Number"! That song's awesome! "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" and the title track are also pretty great in their own rights. How could Pretzel Logic be the weakest of the bunch? Well, again, I don't like Pretzel Logic. I just like the other three albums of theirs on this list more. There are some songs on this album that don't excite me as much, especially on the latter half of the album, but it's all still a fairly good time. Fagen and Becker were still on top of their game around this time. Although, this is still in the realm of the band's "early days," so they're not quite at the peak of their studio mastery. But, at the end of the day, Pretzel Logic is another enjoyable entry in Steely Dan's discography. I like it. Decent 4/5.

RATING: 4/5 this is just peak dad rock i don't know what to say, its good though honestly, i do enjoy the more jazzy sound on the instrumentals. FAV SONG: Rikki Don't Lose That Number, come on its just catchy i don't know what else to say. DURATION: 33m 52s, 11 songs DATE: 20/05/26

Still the essence of Steely Dan after "Can't Buy a Thrill" but this one feel more slow. Still love SD!

Another winning LP from hi-fi’s favourite band. This is pretty flawless outside of the ragtime number at the end of side 1. I really enjoy Donald Fagen’s storytelling. Excellent drumming too.

So much is so good about this but in the end it still sometimes has a tinge of elevator music vibe at times.

Music is intrinsically linked to memory for me and this album really has a special spot in time for me. Rikki Don't Lose That Number got played alot by my mom when I was a kid so hearing it kick off the album immediately got my attention. I'm passingly familiar with Steely Dan so I had an idea of what to expect on this. It's a very jammy kind of record to me lots of really talented musicians throwing ideas at the wall and then constructing a lattice of sound together. A definite funk underline for the whole album but the jumps from jazzy to folk to rock to funk and back and forth made for a breezy album. Really hope there's more Steely Dan on the list even if they are kinda corny sounding sometimes.

Some bangers, couple skips

A fun listen and l think that the album name also contributed a lot to my appreciation. I like pretzels

Always good vibes and a good time with Steely Dan

78/100. A solid pop rock record with plenty of jazz influence running through it. It does feel like a slight step down from their first two records, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking. There are still some great songs here that make it an easy and enjoyable listen.

Thoughts before listening: Outside of Aja I've mainly been a greatest hits guy when it comes to Steely Dan. I know this is one of their more celebrated albums, but I don't know what's on it. I'm sure there will be some recognizable songs that fall in their typical niche of pleasant, jazzy light rock with strong instrumentation, technical prowess, and sharp lyricism. Review: Yeah I nailed the sound here...and I definitely recognize a number of these songs. It seems I know a few more of the deep cuts than I thought with "Night By Night", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", and the title track being equally as recognizable to me as "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". There are some nice discoveries for me on this album: "Parkers Band" piqued my interest with it's more rock centered sound that still mixed the jazz elements with a nice horn solo, "With a Gun" which adds in a western shuffle vibe, and "Charlie Freak" that features a driving piano line that really draws me in. In general this album balances Steely Dan's rock and jazz sides very well, and is a consistently rewarding listen. 4-stars

very good instrumental writing and arranging and excellent performances. i have no earthly idea what the lyrics writer(s) were thinking and/or doing.

Steely Dan made some expertly crafted albums. Compared to some others on this list it's 5 stars. Compared to their own albums it's less. So holding it to the higher standard of something you need to have heard before you die, I would pick some of their other albums

A fun bit of light rock, earnest and a bit dorky

Short and sweet. I generally enjoy Steely Dan and this album made washing dishes and making coffee in the morning more enjoyable. I figure that's enough to give it a four.

It didn't knock my socks off, but it did make me want to wear dad shoes.

Haven’t listened to this album before but I really like steely Dan so this was pleasant. Would definitely listen to it again.

Enjoyed this one. Dunno if it was the weather coupled with the yacht rock stylings, but it just worked for me today. Nothing too exciting, but really good despite not being anything more than what it was.

It is a classic album and is good top to bottom. That being said, it’s pretty same-y throughout and sounds like a lot of other albums from the time.

Wow. I've heard Rikki before but none of the rest of this album. It's not 100% my taste, but it's undeniably excellently written, produced, mixed, and recorded. I have a newfound respect for Steely Dan.

I really like the arrangements and everyones playing their hearts out.

Rikki be really losing that number just to eat pretzels. SD has better albums, still good

Groovy and pleasant. Dad music to the max.

This album is new to me, and I listened a few times and, as with most Steely Dan, really need to listen to it a few more times to wrap my head around it (damn pretzel logic!). Their blend of devastating lyrics and smooth, effortless-sounding, music makes it too easy to miss how good this album is. Need to listen some more!

Yacht rock at its finest! Great album.

This is a weaker entry especially on the back half, but still a really wonderful listen. Any major dude into Barrytown is such a great little run.

Probably my least favorite of their first seven albums. That said it still rips. Kudos to the Dan for not turning East St. Louis Toodle-Oo into an interminable 35 noodle noise odyssey that some of their contemporaries would have done. Thank you generator for sending Steely Dan as the first album of fatherhood. Well done.

Any Major Dude Will Tell You that this album rules.

Solid 3 or maybe 4? Let’s make it 4

Many spots of absolute brilliance, with some streaks of cheese mixed in

average steely dan epic moment but not as good as a few of their other albums

This list actually makes me look forward to listening to a Steely Dan album. Is this what being old feels like? If that wasn’t enough, this album art would be enough to make me want to listen to this album. I find Steely Dan to be very odd because I don’t know how to categorize them. It’s like “elevator dad rock” but I love it because it’s so unique.

Awesome. Steely Dan's first great album.

I have not started listening to this at all but the name and album cover make me want to learn more. Inter-rest-ing. Also what is it with every music head saying that every masterpiece of an album is just a bunch of sweaty white dudes who probably got bullied in middle school(also known as a band). Pretty chill but also did not finish the entire thing

👌🏻 choice

I guess you can only resist Steely Dan for so long

I liked rikki dont lose that number and any major dude will tell you

Solid listen. Not my favorite by Steely Dan, but very good.

I liked this more than I expected to - there's jazzy elements, and it's got a 70s feel but isn't repetitive. Enjoyed it.

Gran para estar depre y viajar

A few weeks ago, I wouldn’t have considered myself a Steely Dan fan. Between this and Aja though? It’s tough. They’re good! Still not my personal favorite, but they’ve really grown on me.

Album #66, Steely Dan, Pretzel Logic, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The only Steely Dan album I know is Can’t Buy a Thrill, which I like. And, as an Irish man, I have a nostalgic love for Reelin’ in the Years. If you know, you know. So this being my second Steely Dan album, I really like it. It’s a strong four, but I think there’s a lot more to discover here. It feels like one that will really open up on repeat listens. It’s a rare band that can move through so many different styles and still sound completely like themselves. They go through country, soul, blues, funk, rock, all these different styles, but it always sounds like Steely Dan. It actually reminds of Rain Dogs by Tom Waits in that way. The guitar work is phenomenal. The licks, the riffs, the solos, the intricacies, it’s all just so, so good. It’s quite an eccentric album, and maybe a bit too eccentric in places. I think especially in the second half it loses me a little bit. But again, it feels like a repeat listen album. I love how short it is as well. It packs a lot into about 33 minutes, and I really appreciate that. Favourite track is Rikki Don’t Lose That Number. I know it’s their big hit, so may be a bit of a basic choice, but it’s just such a great, catchy song. The chord progressions are brilliant. Final note, having just reviewed Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Steely Dans harmonies are better. I think they are an underrated band.

Good album! Smart lyrics that do not make the listener feel stupid if they do not get the meaning. The music is mellow and easy to listen to.

These dudes refuse to make a bad one.

First time listen Love Steely Dan. This is a great album but it definitely isn't as great as some of their other stuff like Gaucho and Aja. Production is top notch as always. Favorite Tracks: Night By Night, Parker's Band, Charlie Freak Least favorite: East St. Louis Toodle-ooo 4/5

An album with good musicianship, easy to listen, but that rewards more attentive listening. The opening track is a bit too pop, but interesting with it's usage of an Horace Silver's base. I like the cover of one of Ellington's most famous compositions. Favourite track: "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo"

Really enjoyed this, very chill and great vibes overall.

strong 3.5

Overall I like the vibe. A few songs were pretty fun. Liked Barrytown and With a Gun.

Wonderful, beautiful, easy listening album. It definitely deserves its spot on this list. It's an album everyone should hear at least once and pairs great with the smells of pines on the summer air and campfire smoke, the feel of cold water and the heat of UV rays reflecting off sunscreened skin, and the taste of watermelon and cheap light beer. 9/10, it's Steely Dan.

Very good rock album. Nothing really stands out too much about it, but I enjoyed it and it was very well put together.

Cool Jazz dads unite!

Incredibly strong out of the gate with the first four tracks (plus pretzel logic later). Too much mid to be five stars.

I’ve got this album at home! :-) Lovely music...

Second Steely Dan album on the list. First one underwhelmed me — overproduced and musically uninteresting. This one shines with diversity. Every track has a unique spin. 'East St. Louis' completely blew my mind on first listen. What's remarkable: from 1974 but sounds like 80s — must have been quite revolutionary for its time. However, on second listen it already wore off. The 'great' factor isn't as captivating anymore. Not quite the heavy rotation material I thought after first listen. Still solid, but loses impact on replay.

Steely Dan always lands in the good not great territory for me. It’s obviously competently executed, and the production is top notch, but the songs lack something I’ve never been able to define.

Enjoyed this! Better than Countdown to Ecstasy, although it got me listening to that again and I might have to adjust my score for that… Very interesting songs, enjoyable vocals, not too long. Good stuff.

its steely dan, cant go wrong

obviously bangers, ni super mega speciaal ma gwn goeie vibey 3.5

pure vibes maar wel geen 5 sterren album

I realy enjoyed listening to this album ! Great Find ✌️

8.5/10

This was absolutely what I needed today. I don't remember rating this album as anything special on my previous listen through of Steely Dan, but it really hit for me this time. Yacht Rock is great Favorite Songs: Rikki Don't Lose that Number, With a Gun

Didn’t blow me away, but it’s smooth enough that I didn’t mind the ride.

There's not such thing as bad steely Dan. But there is better steely Dan than this album.

I honestly thought I didn't enjoy music like this, but it's so good.

Steely Dan is fun as always, a true uncgem.

Their sound is pretty fabulous - the right amount of jazz and pop and rock blended into irresistible confections. I added a couple songs to my playlist, though pretty much the hits I already knew. I enjoyed the whimsical forays into a jazz age tune (“St. Louis Toodle-Oo”) and a hard-boiled western number (“With a Gun.”) in just over 30 minutes they were able to display a lot of range and talent in a tight package. 4/4.5

Love this album, already reviewed and this was as enjoyable to listen to again

Dad rock to dig. Real WAH-WAH-WAH kinda stuff.

Maybe a little more loungey than their other stuff, but they still don't miss

Class. Pop-y in comparison to Can't Buy a Thrill, still great.

2nd Steely album on this list for me! I like all of their albums, but I would really have put Gaucho or Royal Scam here instead of Pretzel Logic, for this goody I will be going for 4 stars I reckon.

Great album, this band always delivers and this one is solid throughout. Not quite five stars but very good

Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Great - Brilliant album from start to finish. I couldn't pick a favourite Steely Dan album but this would definitely be up there.

Interesting harmonies and funky grooves. Not bad at all!

Loved night by night

This album was solidly good. Nothing stuck out to me as a masterpiece, but none of the songs were bad either. I could see the songs growing on me more with repeat listens. Favorite Track - Parker's Band Least Favorite Track - Charlie Freak ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Risch geil

I love Steely Dan but this isn’t my fave of theirs. Still more solid than 90% of this list

Biased because I genuinely like steely dan

Always enjoy a Steely Dan record. Ended before I was ready.

Barry town, Through the Buzz, Rikki etc...

The kings of easy listening strike again. I don’t have a ton to say about this record. It was a very solid listen, very well produced, and like most things Steely Dan, I enjoyed it immensely. Take out ‘East St. Louis Toodle-Oo’ and this would be a perfect score, but as it stands, it’s a very good 4/5

Enjoyed, but not as much as later albums.

this album is so fun! the songs blend in together at times but i liked it, it was a nice surprise.

Some really good vibes. I really enjoyed the music even if I found the vocals a hit and miss.

Precise, rich, jazzy, catchy, melodic… Steely Dan are the real deal of having a strong and playful band. I won't hide it to my hipster friends : I love Steel Dan.

A Steely Dan album is like a box of chocolates. I’d heard this album talked about plenty but never listened front to back. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are clearly virtuosos musically - always some intricate progressions and arrangements. The first 3 tracks had me ready to give this one 5 stars, but I found things getting less interesting by the middle. Glad I discovered that banger “Night by Night” though! 🔥 Any Major Dude rocks as well, and of course Ricky is a certified classic

Beautifully done.

Any more Steely Dan albums and I think I might become a fan. This album flowed so nicely from start to finish and was the perfect accompaniment to my walk along the seafront. Just wonderful vibes, but distinctly different from my memory of Aja. Favourites: Rikki Don't Lose That Number Any Major Dude Will Tell You Pretzel Logic

Great overall album! Smooth, jazzy, catchy, not much filler. Nice listen!

Favorite tracks: Parker's Band, Charlie Freak, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Barrytown Honestly I'm surprising even myself with this rating. I've always thought of Steely Dan as boring, but it did grow on me as the album went on. Still not my favorite style of music, but I definitely have a new appreciation for the jazz elements and harmonies.

Good album, easy listen! 7.1/10

8/10 Great start but dips towards the middle.

Wasn't sure what to expect, listened a few extra times before succumbing to a 4. Good stuff, wide variety.

Cool stuff

Favorite Track: Pretzel Logic

Steely Dan is a very polarizing band, you either love them or hate them. I would say I'm closer to the former, particularly because my dad played us a lot of Steely Dan when I was young. I liked the first half of this album a bit more, or maybe I just didn't listen as closely to the latter half. Rikki Don't Lose that Number is of course a classic but I also quite enjoyed Barrytown and Night by Night; this is an album I'd come back to.

8 - GOOD

It's Steely Dan, like come on

Good albim

I love Steely Dan so this was automatically gonna be a high rating. Probably my second favorite album i have heard by this band. The jazzy pianos are what caught my attention the most. Also I really like the album cover

A great album however I'm not sure I can psychologically endure entering a Steely Dan phase at this stage of my life. I'm also realising I thought Steely Dan and Dave Matthews Band were the same (??) so clearly I have some unpacking to do.

This album is fire. Sonically it is amazing and you can hear influences from rock, country, folk, and country. The singing is soulful and smooth and there is this cool vocal stacking that makes some parts of some of the songs sound autotune esque while not feeling robotic or over the top.

Very good

Great jams. Only a 4 because I know they have better albums

A good album, with a nice blend of jazz and rock that comes together in a catchy sound throughout. The only major criticism would be that that sound becomes fairly repetitive- there are little quirks on each song that keep it interesting, but broadly the album is one style done very well.

In which Steely Dan brilliantly marry their jazz-rock stylings to really catchy short songs with a great pop sensibility. I’d give this 4.5 if I could; it’s seriously good, but because I’m not as familiar with it as some definite 5 star albums I’d feel slightly uncomfortable giving it the maximum score. My other shortcoming is that there are some relatively weaker tracks (although still really good) in the back half, and the album ends rather abruptly, which was slightly jarring. Still, this is about as close to 5 without getting it as any album is likely to be.

Cooles Album, sehr chilliger Sound

Doing uni work while this on the background, perfect sort of album for that. Love the vibes and super chill. Definitely will revisit when paying more attention to the music. Never got bored and loved all the songs.

This was a solid album. A little disappointed in some of the musical choices they made, would’ve made this even better. Feels like they went a kind of generic route. Especially night by night.

Rikki Don't Lose That Number is a perfect song. Reminds me of my Aunt Joan. I found myself vibing along to this one very heavily from the jump. Nodding my head. Generally loving it. So many great tracks. A touch slow in spots. 4.5/5

A type of music where the brevity of the album elevates my opinion of it. An hour of this would put me to sleep, but 30ish mins is enought to brighten my spirits. Charlie Freak was hella eerie and fantastic story telling. Makes me want to go back and listen more intently to other song lyrics. Classic rock, funk, jazz (cover) - Steely Dan did it all. I think I may be a SD fan now...

It’s such well put together music. So many earworms that are designed to get stuck in your head for days. It’s no Aja, but still fantastic.
