Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Hardcore punk pioneers. Musically very accomplished (for the genre), and interesting that the vocals for 'Sacred Love' were recorded down the phone from prison. However, it didn't really grab me. I generally like my hardcore punk to be a bit more light hearted and fun. 2/5.
De la canción Re-Ignition salió años después Ultrasonic Sound, de Hive. Y eso es lo único que le podemos agradecer a este disco.
I needed someone to guide me through appreciating this album, since I couldn't really do it by myself. There were moments where I liked the music, but I never got hooked into it. I liked "Secret 77" and I think I liked the gimmick of "Sacred Love" literally being phoned in.
I didn’t love this, although it was interesting for the strange mixing of genres. The musicians are very talented. The band sort of slides around between metal, punk, ska and even a hard-edged 80s-pop-leaning sound (“Secret 77”). That made this more interesting to me than it would have been otherwise. I also liked little touches like the shouts in “Let Me Help.” I can see how some people would be very into this. But I am not those people.
Is this one of those ones where you had to be there? I like the more punk tracks, like'I Against I', but the more metallic songs are technically accomplished, but I find less compelling. Do I need it a bit rougher edged? Do I want some more intense attitude? Is it just paler in comparison to what I was expecting? I was expecting something wilder.
It was okay but didn't really stand out to me. 0 recognized songs
Generic. Unremarkable. Best track: Re-Ignition
aight
Not good. It just sounded like bad music.
Kind of samey, not super enjoyable.
Not for me. Enjoyed parts of many of the songs but too heavy and crap for my liking.
Punk rock. Skipped around but didn’t hate it. Never heard of it before.
I am not a fan of this iteration of Bad Brains. I've long been a huge fan of their hardcore punk self-titled debut, and while I appreciate the band expanding their musical repertoire and having this more gradually-paced, rock-driven sound, it's just not doing it for me.
Fairly generic punk by numbers. Nothing too interesting.
Articulated noise?
Was traveling whole listening…did not enjoy it much
Nah, fam. // Favs: — Score: Light 2
Straight up wild to start. Hypeee. Like punk metal.
I was originally going to rate this really low, but as I continued to listen it just became better and better. It had some bad moments but for sure some good aswell. A bit uncertain about this rating but I would rate 2.5 / 5 if it was possible.
Nothing special, pretty generic.
Not sure how I feel about this. Really solid guitar playing. Many styles. But it just doesn't match with the songs. The songs themselves don't have a real melody. Lyrically and melodically it's very simple. Not a fan of most of it. Maybe I just don't have enough angst to appreciate it.
pretty good, seemed like a mix of metal, punk and hardcore.
Netter Metal, teilweise recht poppig.
It sounds almost comical.
Metal with a funk edge that passed me by when I was into this sort of thing
This is a different kind of metal. It comes at the genre from a whole new angle, giving low-key vocals and aiming for overall atmosphere rather than riffage. It's a risk I can respect, but not one that pans out super well. It ends up being pretty mundane and somewhat abrasive. And not the cool, challenging abrasive like early Sonic Youth or Swans, but the kind of abrasive that sort of meanders and doesn't do much to enhance the music. Bad Brains tried here and didn't come up with much.
_I Against I_ - the 1001 guide itself writes about how Bad Brains was homophobic and religious, which I didn’t really pick up; sure, there were some songs that were a little religious, but didn’t stand out being that way (and Wikipedia makes no mentions). Whatever! The lead singer’s voice really gets on my nerves.
Well, it was only 31 minutes...
Not very great. Some highlights, but for the most part I did not enjoy this.
Meh
Where is the fucking reggae
Was ok
Very dated and I didn’t really enjoy it.
Nothing special just some normal hard rock really
Fällt mir nicht viel zu ein. Meh? Schlechte 2 Sterne.
I don't really like this
Rubbish
Intro got me pumped up, but the rest was disappointing. Their song "Banned in D.C" from another album would have been very fitting earlier this month :P
pretty wacky, not as good as the other bad brains i've heard, like if faith no more didn't know what they were doing or something
Hardcore punk with reggae and heavy metal influences built from lightning-fast guitars, explosive rhythms, and intensely expressive vocals feels like standing beside a race car engine that's constantly revving into the red—thrilling about once, but exhausting from thefe. The album's technical ability and relentless energy are undeniable, yet for me the constant intensity leaves too little room for contrast or lasting interest.
The sound is an interesting fusion, but I didn’t think the songs were good at all. Maybe just not my thing.
didn't listen
🎧Not at all what I expected Bad Brains to sound like. I do not like this.
No.
Best Track - "I Against I"
No
Awful
No. The most interesting song was ‘Sacred Love’ with the knowledge that the singer recorded the vocals over the phone whilst in prison which actually makes this quite good.
Coming back to rate this a few days after listening and I honestly can’t remember a single thing about it
Really unimaginative song writing, and the vocal delivery is so bad. It really annoyed me how he pronounced his words to try and make them fit the music! The way he says ‘Re-ignition’ was just plain irritating. I bet he makes silly faces when he sings too.
Utter shite. 1/5.
Hate it SO much.
Bad voice for the music type
Sounds like Dan Reed Network of the same era (but not as good), alright for a quick listen but holds very little value over time. Sounds dated and a little uninspired.
they are doing stuff and i don't care
It feels a bit all over the place. The riffs all feel a bit generic, and a bit random. Just felt like a bad impression of Metallica and Van Halen
reason number 1 why you should not let the boys cook unsupervised
Es un punk raro. No me gusto tanto. Parece una mezcla de punk con hard rock.
45
not a fan
at least it was short
i listened to this in the morning and i have already forgotten everything about it. i think i remember not enjoying the vocals. who knows
A very 90s rock album with weird punk and reggae influences. I was not a fan.
Meh
Not for me. 1/5
I love Bad Brains, and their debut album is probably THE 80s US hardcore album that others wanted to be. And the fact they mixed this with reggae tunes added another dimension to their output. Which made this even more disappointing, They seem to have swapped that magnetic energy for overly-polished production by this point, removing most of what made them so good, for me. Right, off to clean my ears out with the first album.
Refused to listen.
NON
Punk, hard rock. Strange music.
wtf was deze
1 Da was em toch ni ze, wth
I would expect nothing more from an album with a stupid name by a band with a stupid name.
"She's Calling You" was my favorite track, probably because it was more alternative and less punk metal-leaning. I have read several reviews where people said they loved the vocalist. Eh...are we listening to the same thing? Sometimes yes, his voice does sound cool and suit the song well but much of the time it's all over the place, screamy-whiny-shouty and just weird. Ok, and the song recorded over the phone while he was in jail – cool story and all if you're into that sort of thing, but I think the overall effect sounds amateurish. I really tried with this one, but the only impression I'm left with is that it's not for me and now I need some Tylenol.
More like No brains, or brain dead. 1.
0 songs added to my favorites. Would avoid listening again.
To be honest, judging by the album art alone, I thought this was a hip-hop album. Then, I hit play. Oh boy. "Intro" had me like, "okay, this sounds interesting. I like it so far." Then track after track, I realized I probably should’ve stopped after the first one. Favorite track: Intro
Also bad
Just awful
0 brain power
Bad. So bad.
p559. 1986. 1 star. Tedious garage band with no tunes and vile lyrics. WTF decided this was essential listening?
Anstrengend
Easiest review yet. It's just crap.
Eh
Not my bag
meh
The biggest issue with it is, it can't make up its mind whether it's hard rock or soft rock and it flips mid song between the two without any attempt to blend them. It's far from a sophisticated fusion, rather cobbled together elements. And another thing - this album is described as a blend of jazz, of funk, or reggae. There is absolutely none of those elements present. Any attempt to characterise it as otherwise is wrong. Most importantly, there are no good songs. Which is something of a problem.
Not sure if I had a headache before listening to this album. I do now though.
No, just no.
Eek. One song here that was surprisingly not terrible, the rest were not a fun time
Unlistenable
this shit sucks. nerds trying to do punk in the year of our lord 1986. Shit wouldn't fly then, or now. Miss me. Go Guardos. I'm still listening to it and spending zero effort on it. and I hate it. what even is this. ok it's growing on me a little. Trying to figure out what this is or what i've heard like it. Lyrics and singing don't match the music. Yeah this sucks.
Not for me
BOOOO
Bad music, too.
Really? Why is this special? Seems pretty pedestrian to me.
There should be an option to give zero or a minus rating; awful; patnful listening
The only thing good about this album was that it ended.
I really don’t like this band. Thank goodness it was only 30 minutes. It was a house of suffering for a while there.
Going into this, I’d never heard of Bad Brains or their album I Against I, but I was intrigued by the talk of their punk roots mixed with funk, soul, and reggae. On paper, that sounds like a bold and exciting combination. In reality, I didn’t hear much of that fusion come through. I gave the album a couple of listens, it’s short and sharp, but I just couldn’t connect with it. The tracks felt quite forgettable, and the sound jumps around in a way that makes it hard to settle into anything. At no point did a song really grab me. Secret 77 was probably the only track that stood out slightly, with a bit of a cinematic, almost James Bond feel to it. Aside from that, nothing really landed. Favourite track: Secret 77 Least favourite tracks: Most of the rest didn’t leave much of an impression Album artwork: Very 80s, not bad, not amazing, just very of its time I’m honestly not sure how this made the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list
The worst combo of punk, hair metal, reggae, and red hot chilli peppers sloppiness
Not their usual standard
Nope! Not a way to start the day. I - say no to this.
Negative
Not my style
This is maybe my 3rd time trying to listen to Bad Brains and boy, do I not like it
Just noise. Ouch.
I'm good. Thanks though..
Der erste Titel war schön - weil sehr kurz. Wurde leider im Rest des Albums nicht mehr erreicht.
Nope
Not familiar with the band … not for me.
From the photo I was expecting some reggae influenced punk but apparently not. Not for me.
Yeah nah, not for me. I can see what they're going for but I don't understand why this album is on this list?? 1.5/5
Found the voice to be a bit too grating even for the genre
Thus is so far removed from what I like about music, I don't know what to say.
0/100 not for me
Well that certainly wasn't what I was expecting. This was weird in a not good way. Some of the guitar was fine but nothing else really was. Vocals get pretty weird and screetchy. 3/10 (1.5/5)
I could appreciate some of the instrumental riffs, but no. I hated the singing
Not really anything for me in this album. It's cool that this band was foundational to hardcore punk and heavy metal while also being Rastafarian and all-black, but unfortunately those genres don't really do it for me.
Absolute rubbish.
Awful. Complete driving. Really struggled to hang on to the end
Not my cup of tea.
Really annoying to listen to. Probably some "notable punk album" again. Not as bad as "Germs" though.
Nah
bad
Struggling to find anything redeemable about it. Vocals are particularly painful and even the standout track is weak.
(sorry)
No thank you
Very weird mumble rock. Didn't like it.
Boring
Oof. Too frenetic for me today.
Dnf
Why?
If Aidan thought it was this bad, I’m not even gonna bother to listen
Jesus
Laut, Gitarrenrock, vergeudete Lebenszeit...
Has all the staples of boring 80's rock, chorus effects and cheap thin Van Halen copy cat lead tones. The first album I was actively annoyed while listening to. I was so close to liking two songs, but they took them in a direction I didn't like.
So bad
Naze
Não é meu estilo
Nope.
👎🏻
If I was into hardcore punk and reggae this would be THE band. But I am just not super into this kind of music and find this hard to enjoy. Appreciate it's place on this list.
What a bad fucking week and then this shit
Intro track was good (no vocals). From there on it goes downhill - irritating vocals. Musically, not bad. Secret 77 is decent. I get why some people would really like this album. For me, it's a no. A lone 1 star
The noisy annoying sounds were anything but nice. 1 of 5
I don’t like hardcore. This made me grind my teeth. Not for me.
Not for me
Not my cup of tea.
I gave it a try, but I'm afraid I remained uninterested in this.
Terrible! Weird music
Bad is right
nope
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
ugh
Hittade inget bra med denna.
Nope
Disorganised mess
Do you like Pearl Jam? If your budget doesn't stretch to Pearl Jam, why not try Bad Brains? All the nutritional content of Pearl Jam without the inconvenience or cost? Maple Jar
Personally wasn’t the biggest fan, I think it was either “Sacred Love” or “Shes calling” ( or whatever they’re called ) was probably my favourite as I liked the guitar sound but not much beyond that. Wasn’t the biggest fan of the vocals or lyrics.
I no likey
A disjointed cluster fuck
Blegh!
Punk was a mistake 1 The title track wasn't too bad
Not my type of rock.
Some interesting sounds - I didn’t get around it though
Mmm...Punk Metal meets something else in 1986 (i'm not entirely sure what). All the boats had already sailed by then unless it's marketed for people who missed out. I was not impressed and bailed out after 3 tracks I'm afraid.
This thrash metal and hip-hop crossover album really seems like the worst of both worlds. The trash metal side is overly simplistic, chaotic and annoying, while the hip-hop side of the equation is badly performed and also annoying - maybe it's the reggae influences, a style I find badly performed and annoying almost by default. Every part of this mash-up is a mess. And the result is even more of a mess than the sum of its parts.
Not for me
I didn't enjoy this one really. 1/5 stars.
There's not much to say about this album; it wasn't that great. It's just a mediocre hard rock album that doesn't seem like it should be on this list. Nothing really stands out as everything sort of melds into a blob of sound.
Loud, grinding
Pretty fucking bad. Didn’t make it through more than 2 tracks. Just yelling rock.
Not good. Turned it off very quickly. Just angry and whiney.
