It was ok
Nja, en tvåa. Bättre punk finns. Bättre Bad Brains finns!!
There was some decent guitar riffs and drums. But overall pretty boring. Just one listen for me on this one.
I don't have what it takes to enjoy punk music. I don't know what is missing from this album for me to really enjoy it thoroughly. That being said, its not annoying, or hard to get through. Just... Bland. Decent as background music. Gives a punk vibe, without having to think about anything to hard.
48/1001 First listen. Never heard them before but heard of them. Not what I expected. Good music. Not good singing. This one just rolled off of me. 3/10
Punk/metal/?? Pitchfork: 9.3 Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs
5/10 I like the part where he goes umehrtdjajbshipidi faaah jistjsitamatoorah and then adds a michael jackson imitation. Inspiring
I am against I against I
2.4 2x didn't stand out
House of Suffering
Just noise
Lo he escuchado sin prestar mucha atención. No los conocía y me han sonado a una mezcla interesante entre Living Colour y Rage Against the Machine. Me he guardo "She is calling you".
Man. I don't like this. TWO STARS
Place and time
Thought this was going to be rap but was a metal, 80s hard rock record with some punk. Pretty mid, streaming lists the album as coming out in 2019.
At least it was only 30 min long...
I might have liked this when I was 16 but I guess I'm getting old...really wasn't interested in this one until about halfway through. Two or three decent toons without the screamy vocals were actually not bad. Partly hard core punk and partly not.
Instrumental was great. Could have used just about any other vocals
I liked the instrumentation, but the songs aren’t really for me
Just not my thing
2 a 3 estrelas
Honestly that was tough to listen to once the heavy drum and base kicked in. To. Each. Song. Some good vocal samples, but it felt like being stuck in a distortion loop at 3am. 2/5
OK.
Some solid tracks with great lyrics, but the vocals just don't do it for me
Fun... but doesn't seem like much different/new.
Some good rock but a bit monotonous
The Spotify overview says that these guys mixed punk with reggae. I don't hear that at all. I hear grunge, which is surprising as this came out in 1986. So pioneering, maybe, but I don't really like listening to it.
Alright I guess. None of the energy of their debut and awful 80s production.
Unfortunately I'm not a punk fan. But that left me pleasantly surprised when i found out how melodic Bad Brains songs are after the intro. I liked i against i, house of suffering, and i think reignition after that it all started sounding very 80s. And i wish i could analyze what it is about 80s melodies i don't like but i just know i don't like it. After that, i thought sacred love was good. But as a personal preference thing, it's overall not for me. Shout out to my fellow dreadheads in genres where the demographic is unrepresented though.
Ehh, very busy kind of music, not a fan
Leuke hardcore, maar ook niks aparts
Don’t love punk, but this wasn’t awful.
Not a fan of the vocalist here, I couldn't really understand much. The instrumentations certainly carry this band to at least a decent sound. I feel as if the album could have been condensed so it wasn't as grating by the end.
This wasn't really my thing, it was like art/alternative metal? At least it wasn't too long. 2/5
"Have mercy on the poor" is my new motto for life
I like the style a bit, it feels agressive and raw. Still I think it's not my kind of style to really listen to it but the main song is good
its different from other rock albums but i wouldnt listen to this again
Reminded me of Judas Priest a bit with more prog rock elements but then instead of expanding on the elements they just go for a few bars then stop. Songs were on the verge of OK until something in them just didn't click and it was like that for every song for me :( On to the next one.
This was more hard rock than punk, so I really didn’t enjoy it.
Fine. Initially I thought I'd enjoy it more but as the album progressed I become less interested.
It’s creative and different. Unsophisticated. Feels forced in spots. Don’t know how this wasn’t bigger. Must have lacked mtv appeal
Whatever Bad Brains song I heard 20 years ago did not sound like most of this. I think. Who knows? Point is, this was different than what I was expecting, and I guess it was a little more interesting, but still not something I’m likely to come back to.
Several songs felt a little more like "Band Against Me."
Pretty messy and unenjoyable, was perilously close to 1-star but a few tracks were decent enough
Too hard for me (I'm turning into a pussy). Highlight was the vocal delivery. Unlikley to return.
I Against I I’ve only heard of Bad Brains through the Beastie Boys. I know they are a hardcore band, so I wasn't expecting a great deal. And despite it being more funk rock with punk/hardcore elements, I was right not to expect much as it's a pretty unremarkable album, with nothing much interesting happening either melodically, vocally, lyrically or musically. Not woeful, and not as forcefully dull as Afghan Whigs but I cannot foresee any reason to ever listen to this again. 🧠🧠 Playlist submission: She’s Calling You
Didn't enjoy it enough to listen again to the parts that were not so bad
Too many musical genres. It did not feel cohesive to me though the musicianship was very good
2+ Stars (6/15)
--Intro... --I Against I...already digging the rhythm section --House of Suffering...I like the speed but it's a little basic compared to the previous track --Re-Ignition...this is interesting. Not sure I like it. But it has something --Secret 77...another interesting sound and structure. But is it a good song? Where is the hook? --Let Me Help...when he sings it's good, but then he does this annoying talk-singing thing which is not as good --She's Calling You...feels like it keeps working its way up to a kick-ass chorus that never comes --Sacred Love...boring --Hired Gun...decent guitar solo, I guess --Return to Heaven...now we're getting a little weird. I like this
Nej tack. Intetsägande rockma. Tråkig sång, tråkiga riff. Inget sticker ut. Tur att det var en kort skiva.
Not a fan
Unfortunately bored me a little bit.. and again I’m so behind rip.
Interesting better punk, but no standouts
Really not good
Not my scene.
Ugh
Let me know when Rock for Light is the choice of the day.
Expected to like this less. Had a feeling it was going to be all screamy and punk and it surprised me that it wasn’t a punish to get through. My wife hated it. Probably won’t listen again.
I'm not a huge fan of this style of punk and this isn't particularly well done.
++: Secret 77, Hired Gun +: I Against I, Re-Ignition, Let Me Help, Sacred Love +-: Intro, House of Suffering, She's Calling You, Return to Heaven 4,1/10
It's fine but doesn't really hold up or interest me
Some good riffs but life is too short to engage with this artist's unhinged brand of homophobia
Niets voor mij
Not for me
So so
It was fine. I won’t relisten
Meh
H.R. has an interesting voice, but the album was kind of all over the place. The songs themselves were okay, but the tonal shift between could be a bit strange at times. It was nice to listen to something a bit different on this list though.
Don’t believe the hype. This album often gets cited for mixing genres. You have to search pretty hard to find evidence of this. There are a couple of track on side two, like She’s Calling You which have a somewhat glossy of the period dance pop sound but otherwise it’s straightforwardly hardcore rock album with little musical range. Fun fact: the vocal track to Sacred Love was recorded over the phone from gaol where the lead singer was doing time for distributing weed.
Described as punk meets reggae, but I didn’t hear the reggae part? Sounds far closer to Nu Metal than reggae by my ears, and while I try to be open to all genres this one was a big nope for me. There’s some fast and furious playing here that I respect, but this isn’t one I care to return to.
Living Color did it better.
Not a bad album. I had heard of them before but never listened.
The Smiths covering Metallica covering Duran Duran. I am too hungover for this shit
This just isn't for me. The music isn't bad, and there are some good guitar riffs, but the vocals are just bad.
I can appreciate it, but it’s not quite to the mid level for me.
It was ok. Didn’t really stick
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. It's rock mostly leaning punk. It's a bit rough around the edges for me, and I don't really care for the vocals.
Not very interesting.
Nope
Not a big 80s rock fan
Niet lang geluisterd
Felt like a predecessor to Rage Against the Machine. Not my tempo
Meh
Olidliga trumljud. Annars ganska kul

Is this album good? No, not at all. BUT it was short so I don't care.
Caustic, vital, splenetic and I wish I'd heard it on rel
I listened to this whole album twice and did not care for it. It's not that good.
4/10.
I thought I’d like it more, but I wasn’t that bothered. Maybe I’ll listen again. Never heard of them before
Eh
Heavy metal is Not for me
FAVO: She's calling you
Boring
This wasn’t my thing
I Against this album.
It is better loud but still only 2 stars or D+ for me.
I think this album is the very definition of a 2. It was a cool concept: reggae mixed with punk/grunge, but I couldn't get into the vocalist AT ALL. The solos ripped tho. There were some good moments, but overall I felt very eh on this album. Liked Songs: "Intro" , "I Against I" , "Secret 77" , "Hired Gun" (LOVED this one)
Albums that you're supposed to love because so many people go on and on about their influence and cultural cachet ... or how important they were in their misspent youth. Whatever.
i maybe vibed a little but really quite generic
I got nothing….
I found the music a bit too aggressive and the vocals were lacking
Interesting but not good. Impressed with the talent, but don't like the genre.
I’m convinced the author of this book would think to himself, ‘hmm, perhaps I should aim for greater representation. Shall I dip into the vast history of hip hop? Shall I pick one of the great jazz albums? I could, but I only like post-punk and new wave… fuck it, I'll just include a black punk band. Yyyep that’ll do. Anyway, had elvis costello released anything new since I started this train of thought?’
Not my jam.
A combination of metal and punk. Really didn't like how the singer pronounced reignition. Not my thing but there's definitely talent there musically, less so lyrically and vocally
Don't know what to give this, didn't really stand out in anyway and just all bled into one big mess. Not too offensive but another low 2.
The guitar is good. Everything else is bad.
No for me
Appealed to my 70s upbringing
Rock/Metal/Punk, not too loud, not too anything really. Not too bad, not too good. I suppose if I was in a bar back in the day I wouldn’t have minded this playing in the background. Somehow the blending of the different genres didn’t quite work for me. It wasn’t excellent enough at any one of them to make it memorable.
Such a weird and out there album for these guys. Sort of bounced off me but definitely a lot for the fans to chew on
Interesting combo of genres but it mostly sounds like punk to me. Recording a song from a prison call is pretty cool though. High 2.
This was an odd one. From start to finish, sometimes I thought I was listening to the Ramones, then I thought I was listening to The Clash and at one point, I thought I was listening to a slightly heavier Duran Duran! A little too punk for me
This definitely wasn't for me. The first several tracks were unbearable, but the latter half of the album was listenable (though not enjoyable)
Nope. Don't like that.
I am pleased this list made me listen to this album. I liked some of it. But while I liked how this album sounded, I didn't really think any of the *songs* themselves were good. On a second listen this didn't really get much better either. In fact, I'm going to switch this off right now.
I was warned this may be a little much for me, but I didn't really find this to be that intense. I can't say this is really my thing, but I wasn't annoyed or waiting for the end. This was like punk meets heavy metal and thought the singer sounded a bit like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. The beat from Re-Ignition reminds me of something from Fugazi, but can't figure it out. And Fugazi was the first band to play after this album on my Spotify. Anyway, though there were some decent beats and tracks, but really, this just isn't my listening pleasure. 2
bad
neeee
I couldn't connect with this at all. This pure Straight Man Music™. Nothing wrong with that, just not for me.
Not quite what I expected but having never heard of this lot had no preconceptions. Some of the rockier tracks struck a chord but overall I cannot say it was an enjoyable or memorable listen. 2/5 17/9/24
Jävligt udda album, men kul ändå. Kanske inte riktigt min stil dock
The importance of this band is understandable but the material is ultimately a bit weak, shame feel like there on the cusp of a good album here 2*
As cool as realizing Re-Ignition was sampled in a song on The Matrix soundtrack was, the rest of this just wasn't my thing. 2/5
I know this is an important, formative punk album, but unfortunately it didn't do much for me. I've been intrigued by the name and the cover for a while but it just didn't hit like I had hoped. Still, glad we got it. Favorite tracks: Secret 77, Sacred Love. Album art: Definitely an iconic cover, two faces close to the camera with some great, authentic hand-written font. Love the colors and the contrast. 2.5/5
Rimelig hardcore 80’er punk, næsten lidt metal over det, meget energisk, men måske lige grov nok
Some of these songs are downright laughable
What the hell was that?
This album sounds surprisingly amateurish, especially in terms of the vocal parts. The guitar and drum tones are so awful it becomes fascinating.
Soft pass. At least to consider this record as "essential album material". Huge respect for Bad Brains for initiating hardcore punk in D.C, around the same time or even before Minor Threat and Black Flag did. And also a fair amount of respect for them trying to here branch out to other styles going from funk to metal and pop during the mid-eighties. The thing is, the production values of *I Against I* are downright *horrible*. To the point where that sickening, echoey sound on the drums (and also the background chants), along with the paper-thin one for the guitars, just ruin everything. Even Ric Ocasek's production for previous LP *Rock For Light* wasn't as cheesy as this. Besides, it seems to me that frontman H.R. often gave far more impressive vocal performances live than in the studio. Which is particularly noticeable on this 1986 album... So points for pointing the way towards the future of crossover rock at least. But not enough to put this on my own record shelves. If really you want essential Bad Brains records alternating between hardcore punk and dub-reggae, go to debut *Banned In D.C.*, or even earlier sessions for the demo *Black Dots*, recorded by future Fugazi sound engineer Don Zientara, and ultimately released in 1996. 2/5 for the purposes of this list. 7/10 for more general purposes (5 + 2) Number of albums left to review: 88 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 392 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 228 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 293 (including this one)
Two stars for their influence on the punk scene, but I did not like this record.
1.5 - 2
Very influential record, but a lot of bands did it much better later. Bands like Sick Of It All, Refused, Turnstile, hell even Korn and Limp Bizkit wouldn't be the same without this record. But if you are used to listening to hardcore punk (I am), this is too tame. Especially the vocals. I don't really like any of the songs. I don't even think this is a good gateway into hardcore punk. Listen to some newer bands instead.
Couldn't get into it.
Nothing here to impress me. A couple toe-tapping moments like the start of the I Against I track.
standard enough rock album, nothing stand-out for me.
its not really my kind of music but i clearly understand the appeal and i think this bad has great technical capabilities. however, i do feel like every song is the same musically.
The guitar often sounded like the soundtrack to a sega genesis racing game. The vocals we interesting and unique but ultimately not my scene.
This was interesting. I felt like the combination of metal, reggae and lounge singing was a bit too much. I like what they're saying and the guitar playing is amazing.
Meh
2.5 favorite: ? least: ? every song sounded basically the same
Not great, hate this generic punk
Meh
I can understand the significance of the record, but for me even after spinning it twice it just didn't digest for me. Maybe it's not my genre, but I can for sure respect the musicianship that is on display, just didn't turn out to be an album that I particularly liked.
Alternative metal.Rollo.
Okay
1/8, 13%
strange but sometimes ok
Just can't into hxc
Nah this is obnoxious noise, I don't like it
Was going to go with a strong 1. But really enjoyed it.
Album nr 120. After the absolute shitshow of nr 119 (Atomizer/Big Black) at least this contains as an other reviewer put it "Glimpses of semi-goodness" together with it being mercifully short those are really the only two positives I can mention about the music. As for the sound quality at least one of the six sound-engineers was somewhat competent so you could actually hear the lyrics and the individual instruments (not always a good thing). While it was hardly a "Wall of Sound" at least it wasn't the "Swamp of Sound" from album 119. Concluding, while most of the emotions evoked by listening to this album were negative that is a lot better than being "utterly hatefull" (about 10% of the albums on here so far) or "utterly emotionless" (about 40%) (And yes I do know that awording 3 stars to the "emotionless" albums make no sense from a numerical standpoint. It is MY rating and it only has to make sense to ME so YOU can suck it)
hard to listen too ... 2 stars
Just an average mid 80s metal/funk album, it didn't get excite me in any way. It was a bit all over the place and wasn't that consistent though at least it is a short album. One positivity I can say is that it sounds fresher than most albums from this era of rock music.
Vocally I heard the smallest part of Ozzy. We're talking like less than 5% but I heard it first on House of Suffering. This feels a bit all over. Could be missing something but I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't here.
I was into this for the first 4 tracks then it started to wear me out. It kind of slows down after that. The instrumental interplay was interesting for this kind of music. The vocals don't rise to the occasion. Favorite Track: Re-Ignition
It seems I never listened to this band back in the day for good reason. This is average and the production is awful. It is ahead of the game in terms of that funk/metal/punk thing that was so big along side grunge in the early nineties, but this must be one of those rare occasions where the original influence is worse than the copycats it spawned. Mr. Bungle, Living Colour and early Faith No More definitely owe something to this, as I suppose do Anthrax and Fugazi. Groundbreaking and influential, just not really that good.
01) Intro - 5,0 02) I Against I - 5,5 03) House of Suffering - 5,0 04) Re-Ignition - 5,5 05) Secret 77 - 5,5 06) Let Me Help - 5,0 07) She's Calling You - 6,0 08) Sacred Love - 6,0 09) Hired Gun - 5,5 10) Return to Heaven - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,40 (54/100) Current ranking: 174/197 At times it seems to me that I might understand what this is about, but those moments are short-lived and they quickly disappear. I personally like "She's Calling You" the most because it's the least punk/hardcore/whatever...
I struggled quite a bit during the first half of this album, but then suddenly...no, wait, I struggled in the second half too. That was a tough 31 minutes to get through. Look, it's not that this is a bad record by any means; it's just so far removed from my taste. I don't care for the thin production sounds of 80s punk or early hardcore. There is a lot of cool stuff going on here, but I was too distracted by how bad it was being recorded to even focus. Fabricated crunchy Line 6 amp guitar tones, aimless-sounding lyrics and vocal melodies, it's just unpleasant. Some tracks veer close to 80's hair metal, and I have to admit, those were the best on the record.
Not really sure what they were going for with this; seemed like a lot of different styles mashed together badly
I don’t know if it’s because I was hungover, but this made very little impact on me. To say I listened to it would be a stretch, it was just on a room in a room I happened to be in. Simpsons: No
I had a bad brain after listening to this. The only reason this isn't a 1 star is because I liked some of the guitar bits but the “singing” ruins it for me
Some bits I actually quite liked, I went in thinking I'd enjoy it but it never went anywhere positive for me.
Not for me.
Not my type of music but respect the movement they helped start…
Never heard of them. Don't care for.
meh
Just ok
I didn't much enjoy this.
Some good songs in the middle surrounded by complete garbage
Not for me. I missed the whole punk era, and this one didn't grab my attention.
This one wasn’t for me
This was OK, I thought the mix of heavy/punk metal and funk made for an interesting sound. Just didn't have any songs that stuck out to me as very memorable.
4/10 I would ask what this is doing anywhere near this list, but it has clearly been influential on a lot of stuff (that I happen to not enjoy very much…) Vocals really don’t do it for me at all, make it almost unlistenable at points Musically the purer punk metal stuff is weak, the broader/more 80s style ones work better Not great Best: Secret 77
It just doesn’t have anything good going for it. I really tried to like this one, but it’s too disparate and incoherent. There’s nothing musically interesting or particularly talented to be found here.
Meeeh
Just not my genre of music. This album was made to be a Tony Hawk Underground soundtrack.
What a departure from their roots, and not in a good way. It sounds like generic 80's hard rock bordering on metal rather than the hardcore punk that I loved in the first two albums. Really disappointed in this album.
Spotify says mixing punk with reggae, but sounds like a precursor to 90s hard rock. Seems fine, no strong feelings
Somewhat bouncy but mostly tedious metal (and neither too heavy nor too hardcore). One gets the history and influence, just doesn't dig the music ... or the politics ... or the religion. The weed, maybe. "Secret 77" seems best (or least tedious) track .. has a litlte new wave edge to it. More reggae woulda been additive, too. One can attest to the quality or seriousness of the lyrics as they are difficult to hear in the all mucky funk, but one doubts one would learn much. After all these decades of metallic and punky permutations and blendings, it seems worth asking if it was actually a good idea to merge all these genres.
Bit of middle of the road generic rock. Didn't particularly stand out unfortunately.
solid hard-rock with metal-touch but nothing remarkable.
The looping gets to be monotonous at times but overall I like the mix — very Pendulum without the Z-tar.
Man skulle jo tro det var fredag! Ville nok hellere have haft enten en rigtig fed hård rock plade eller en rigtig fed punk plade, de kan ikke rigtig beslutte sig her synes jeg.
it sounds like thugs trying to make classy music.
It got better than I expected at first but I expected it to be awful and it was merely annoying.
I enjoy a lot of the instrumentation and general riffs but the singing doesn't do a lot for me. Overall a lot of meh.
Okayish, sorry It's just really couldn't win my attention
Definitely a rough listen, vocals were quiet and hard to distinguish any kind of words/growls. Had some good guitar work and good riffs from time to time but was very all over the place and hard to follow. Not sure if this just isn't my genre but I don't see the appeal. 2 stars.
Ei se tämäkään vakuuttanut
This is like reggae vocals but paired up with thrash metal or hardcore punk music. It's weird. Strong Rasta vocals, but like the opposite of Rasta music. Instead of light and peaceful, it's hard and fast. It's like if Anthrax hired a Rasta to sing for them. The fast, thrashy songs are good, but the slow meandering ones, which this album is Ike 80% comprised of, don't really hit for me. They lack direction. They just kind of happen, and don't really accomplish anything. Disappointing. Favourite songs: House of Suffering Least favourite songs: Secret 77 2/5
Ich has jetzt nid mega genau gloset aber es isch mir scho biz zuu trashy das würklich würd lose. Could be worse. Could be Orgel Jazz ;}
Bad, kicking
Not sure about this album. Is it metal, is it punk, is it rock, or some weird confusing mix of all three - Wikipedia says Alternative Metal/Hardcore Punk/Funk Rock/Funk Metal. I don't see why so many people should have considered this such an important album.
Not my cup of tea …
Punk music is just not for me. Some of the guitar solos were worthwhile.
Q. What does Shack eat for breakfast? A. LAMB CHOPS!
The wiki description made me think it would be better than it was. Didn't hear all the "funk and reggae" as described 2.4
I am convinced that the vast majority of the punk included in this list was done so as an afterthought to avoid the author getting yelled at about it
I am not a hardcore punk person sorry
meh
They really haven't found their target market with me.
Well produced but the music is not for me. None of this genre is for me. I appreciate that they kept it to just over 30'.
Not sure what this is... other than pretty bad.
Not my kingd of music
Ok, but not something I Will listen to again.
Not unpleasant but quite forgettable
Mjög einfaldur tvistur. Ekki fráhrindandi sound heilt yfir, en nákvæmlega engin þörf til að heyra þetta aftur. Held að restin af catalógnum sé ás.
Hyggeligt lille country album.
Excellent guitars and rhythm section. The vocals are just not for me.
Simply put, I don’t like it.
Not my typical style. I may have liked this when I was younger. I understand I against I has a following however
simply not 4 me but i respect it
There are brief moments where this album really shines. Though they are brief and rarely extend through the length of a track. Otherwise the sound can feel pretty discordant in a way that is not always pleasant.
For about the first half of this album it was the exact type of hardcore punk that I hate before it became okay 80s pop rock for a couple songs, then went back to being shit for the last couple songs and I got that irritated feeling of just wanting it to end. I can't say I hated it enough to give it a 1 but it's really fucking close.
Is Bad Brains one of the first bands to create music in hardcore punk genre? Very likely but is it enjoyable to listen to nowadays? Not at all, 0%. I'll admit it is an interesting record with quite unique sound and vocal, giving me a comparison to some albums by Beastie Boys, or even RATM at times. But overall it's very raw and just so sharp around the edges you have to take a break after every song. Once again, an album that's an essential part of the history, but not really easy to listen to.
Not sure what this was supposed to be. Interesting.
Alternative metal.Rollo.
Hmm, rar sammensetning av sjangera
Very occasionally interesting, but overall I find very little to care about or reason to revisit.
Clearly this has had lots of influence on bands that followed them, and is noteworthy for that. Unfortunately I just don't really like it. It sounds like punk but with stereotypical 80's pop production.
Not really my bag
Some hard rock mixed with thrash metal mixed with punk. An original concept that managed to sound very unoriginal. This album didn't do a damn thing for me despite being well written and performed: an extra star for that.
Love a lot of punk but this has, I don’t know, a bit much generic 80s sounds bleeding in? Don’t care for the vocals, production.
26th July 2023 Listened on the journey into the office. Back home and hung with Dougs in the evening. Short sharp blast of punk with a reggae twist. Can see the origins of Green day in here. 2.5 if I could.
Still not sure what to make of Bad Brains. It’s a bit of early hair metal guitar and riffs, without melody or chorus refrains. The vocals are a bit of Danzig that morphs into the lead singer from Overkill. It’s weird. 2/5
Noisy and messy in an unfocused way. I can’t hear the riffs. I did prefer the second half of the album, but still a bit mid ‘80s unfocused heavy rock, but thankfully not thrash or just industrial.
You know how you have A list celebrities? This was like D list celebrity-esque metal.
Going to go against the reviews here and say that Rock For Light and Bad Brains are fantastic albums, ultra hardcore meeting reggae. This not so much I'm afraid, seems a bit of a watering down of the hardcore and a dilution of the reggae. Sorry.
Singer reminds me of Jake Cinninger. Pretty meh album. Not bad though.
I like the heavy instrumentals but the style of singing throws me off at times
This review is not sure that punk can be enjoyed carte blanche. In researching the album, the history and personal experiences of the band itself are interesting, but whether or not they inform an enjoyable musical experience that is necessary prior to passing is debatable. Part of making punk meaningful is making it sound like something someone may want to listen to in the first place. Sure, the album is rather diverse in its sounds that go beyond punk, and for that there is respect in adding some diversity to the genre. If it is just for the album itself and the circumstances during its creation where "Sacred Love" is essentially phoned in from the local pen vocals, well that is just a spectacle and not enough to score highly.
Easiest 2 stars of my life
Not really my sound for its lean towards metal
My problem with Bad Brains is that there were some better bands around at the time (Husker Du, anyone) and a number of the bands they influenced are significantly better. Although this album only clocks in at just over 30 minutes I'd had enough half way through. You know what you're getting, and you get it.
Dunno what to say other than this wasn't my bag. Maybe the singing style as I am becoming more and more open to punk. Glad it was only 30mins...
Never heard of this band. A little punk. A little Metallica-ish. First few songs too screamy for me. Secret 77 almost sounds like it could be a The Police song. I liked their pop-ier stuff.
Fun in the background but rather forgettable.
Didn't really enjoy this
I hear Tenacious D. I hear Faith No More. I hear 90s Metallica. And yet, not a metal band. A fun magic trick.
My late, great Grandma Helen always told me that the turkey needs to be "moist, like my pussy whenever I watch that Patrick Swayze dance." She would have despised this album. I hope she never was exposed to it during her lifetime. This album probably killed her now that I think about it.
Even for punk rock this feels like a mess
Pretty weak. Felt like soft hardcore.
J'aurais mis 2.5 si on me laissait le faire...
cette aventure est semée d'embûches
Nope Well…with the exception of Stereo 77
It was an ok album. It was a punk album with some reggae tones. It was a relatively short album which helped it. I have no desire to listen to it again.
Is this one of those ones where you had to be there? I like the more punk tracks, like'I Against I', but the more metallic songs are technically accomplished, but I find less compelling. Do I need it a bit rougher edged? Do I want some more intense attitude? Is it just paler in comparison to what I was expecting? I was expecting something wilder. I can hear that this predates Living Colour by a year or two. Hired Gun could totally be a Living Colour song. But not quite as catchy.
I know this is one of those bands where's you lose any credibility if you have anything but glowing praise for them, but this sounds like Megadeth if they did this kind of music. And Megadeth blows.
Here he is: Mike Patton‘s vocalist inspiration! From yodel to rock-a-billy over chords grinding explosions. The bass gets slapped real hard as come the breaks. A hard candy which delivers a hot-spicy taste. But that‘s it. 2.2
Did not enjoy at all
Nope. Not interesting to me at all. Didn't understand it or like it. Occasionally reasonable guitar riffs but vocal melody lines dull and vocal style not appealing.
Alternative metal.Rollo.
No redeeming features
Just a bit boring
I enjoyed the music, less so the vocals.
So I mean, there's nothing wrong about this but I still don't see why this would be in the top 1,001 albums -- maybe I wasn't listening closely enough or it had some big impact I'm not familiar with. It was fine
Not for me thanks
Not my favorite style of music, so it kind of started behind the 8 ball. I wouldn't say it's bad, but I struggle to get really any enjoyment out of harder punk rock. 3/10
Irritating.
I really want to like Bad Brains, but I cannot get into them.
I listened to this album a bit back when it came out and I know it's considered influential. Being a huge 80s punk fan I know I should love Bad Brains but it sounds dated and poorly produced (def not a in a cool lo-fi way). I'm sure in 1986 it was great.
Some moments of okayness but overall a bit too dirty rock
Only ok, like mediocre punk mixed with the worst excesses of the 80s. A pale shadow of the music they love, but interesting nonetheless
I miss the days of when Bad Brains were full of vitriol and righteous anger.
They can't keep in tune or decide on the time signature which wanders all over the place. Experimental punk rock reggae mix that didn't work for me most of the time. I can see that there would be a market for this just I am not part of it.
I mean I wasn’t in to it but at least it was short
Secret-77 is by far the best song to me, and it’s just OK. I do not care for H.R.’s vocal delivery at all.
Meh!
I found it all rather ordinary
i just dont like the singer's voice
I didn't like this when it first started. It definitely improved. Not sure I'd listen to it again. I don't know what I was listening to in 86 but it wasn't this. If this had come out 10 years later I probably would have been all over it.
More monotonous than hard-core. Maybe because of all we've heard in the years since, this sounds like your basic funky metal (and not all that heavy either). And, hey editors, where exactly is the reggae?
A little disappointing. Energy and power are high, the singer's voice even reminds me of Simon LeBon, but the songs are just not there. Nothing to write home about. 2/5.
My co-judge and I accused each other of owning this, but I think we were both wrong, it's more likely that it was released while we were at CKCU and we heard it there. "Secret 77" (especially the vocals) and "Sacred Love" I can listen to. I'm not so enamored with the dives into speed-metal that dominate the front-end of the album. I usually like guitar solos, but I found Dr. Know's guitar a bit grating, especially in the first few few tracks.
Not nearly as tight or exciting as their debut album, more so tainted by the general 80s tendency for repetitive vox and uninspiring, repetitive instrumentals (even by punk standards where the songs are under two minutes).
No thanks… garage punk with a lot of energy, but then not really that special. Somehow repeating what was delivered with previous releases..
Not what I expected - it’s a bit awkward - at times interesting but the vocals get in the way and I get hardpressed to find a song. I want to like it but I can’t.
I've never heard of bad brains, and the cover doesn't give me much to go on. Intro is pleasantly heavy. The title track I against I is original and moves right along and now I get it, this is punk. With a nice dose of metal and some reggae rhythms. To my ears a fresh original sound, but the energy is so uneven I'm left feeling a bit confused. They certainly have range but, I find myself surprised to be saying, maybe too much range? This should be right up my alley but I didn't end up loving it by the end. Best track: She's Calling You.
Did not enjoy, felt like quite generic hard rock. Didn’t hold my attention.
Bad Brains' third album "I Against I" is their best-selling one. The punk band experimented with genres of funk, soul, reggae, and metal on this album. They showed the world that "you can still be hard by playing slow". This album also influenced many rock bands and artists to come in recent years. I thought this album was alright to listen to while working, but it wasn't amazing to me either.
Didn’t enjoy this one much. Had a pretty rough sound. Didn’t find too much value here as it seemed like a lesser quality alternative album. 3.7/10
Ceci me laisse plutôt indifférent. J’en comprends l’intérêt.
Another album that I'm not sure about how it got a place on this list.
Guys shouting all the time? not the type of music that id like.
Interesting punk album, not my kind of vocals
