Reviews (page 4 of 7)
This is an interesting album, psychadelic rock mixed with Latin music and instruments. It's nice when something unfamiliar comes up on this list, and this album is something I definitely never would have come across if not for doing this. Very unique, and an interesting listen but not something I would put on repeat.
yep that's psychedelia all right
Really interesting tunes from another band I didn’t know.
First time listening and this is an oddity that I have never heard before. I wish I spoke Portuguese as if the lyrics are as intriguing as the music this is a cracker! Favourite Tracks "Senhor F" "A Minha Menina""Bat Macumba" and "Ave Genghis Khan" Brilliant stuff and why I love this site so much, this is rightfully on the list.
Freaky Brazilian psychedelic pop jams, a genre which surely sounds one of the coolest on earth. The album itself is pretty cool, but am I enthusiastic for it? One question: does anyone really find it that freaky? Its unconventionality felt predictable. Maybe I'm inured to psychedlic oddness, but I wasn't remotely as startled as I had come to expect from reading accounts of this album. This isn't a failing per se (novelty isn't inherently better or worse than caution aesthetically), but I would suggest that either the psychedelights of this album have been superceded by later sonic experiments, or that critics have overstated this album's strangeness because it's all in foreign. This is not to disparage the album; it's worthy of your time, and you should find much to like on it. But I can't say it's seismic enough for a full 5 stars. A worthwhile curio.
60's garage rock blended with brazilian music. This album sounds like The Velvet Underground and The Beatles went on a trip to São Paulo and got incredibly stoned to the extent that they forgot who they are. This album may appear like it loses structure all the time, but I am really fond of this chaotic energy. Needed this. Thanks to this project, I found about this gold of an album.
Not heard before. Excellent. Brazilian to its core, but with influences from the US and UK.
The 32nd album proposed by "1001 albums generator" is the first one that doesn't come from the Anglo-Saxon world, and I will possibly wait a very long time before an Italian or Ethiopian production appears. This project should be called "1001 Anglo-Saxon Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" (maybe "only" 950 albums would remain). Indeed, the British and United States pop music has had a tremendous influence on the international production. This Os Mutantes album provides a good example of that, as much of its songs are deeply influenced by 60s Anglo-Saxon music. But what makes Os Mutantes interesting is the absorption of those codes by the Brazilian tradition, giving us a "mutant" music that can only enrich popular music.
Glad there are more Latin music coming up~
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: A minha menina, Bat macumba, Trem fantasma
its spanish but it sounds like a 60s softrock band, and 60s spanish music and it has some intersting sounds in it that remind me of more electronical influences so its quite an intersting album. pretty good for it's era
Really enjoyed this. Knew a couple of songs (A Mina Mehnina & Bat Macumba) but great to hear the whole album. This demonstrates just why Sgt Pepper is cited as such an influential album. A lot of the sounds, styles and even the cabaret wackiness are all borrowed from that album. Particularly the horns of Panis. The Beatles’ previous works, particularly Revolver’s staccato fuzz guitars can be heard here too. All this is filtered through a Brazilian sensibility, taking it somewhere else entirely in places. The album sounds like it was a lot of fun to make, and a great example of world psychedelia of the time, and just how big that genre's influence was.
More than just a Brazilian style Beatles and psychedelic 60’s rip off, this album is all sorts of charming weird and wonderful.
Liked it towards the end much more than when I started it. Didn't think I was enjoying it and then found myself nodding my head and tapping my foot by mid album. Need to learn Spanish.
I think I got one of the weirder albums on this list because I haven’t heard anything like this before. It felt like the experimental Spanish version of psychedelic music and it felt totally unique. Based off music alone, this is a 3 but the sheer uniqueness makes it a 4. Fav: a minha menina
Sweet, french film on a beach vibes
Music for a fever dream. I love this. It’s definitely not something to dive into every day, but it is absolutely perfect for when this kind of mood strikes.
Enjoyable psychedelia/experimental, and compared to Caetano Veloso, this is more my speed in regards to the Tropicalia movement.
Reminded me a lot of the Beatles, even though it wasn't in english. Pretty fun music. No recognized songs
At first I was like wtf, I'm not gonna listen that, but I gave it a go and boy oh boy this was gold
Absolutely enjoyed this and had never heard it before. A few of the songs sounded like proto-Stereolab
Thats a good 1968 album 😀
I’ve got a soft spot for Brazilian music. Doesn’t get much funkier, for sure.
Really cool flair. Could have come out last year and I wouldn't be surprised.
Well this was fun. Very entertaining. All kinds of styles and a kitchen sink of sounds but always delivered with a wink and a smile. Much the same as when I first heard, Histoire de Melody Nelson thus us one that will get multiple listens. 4 🌟
such a strange album! i liked how much variety there was, and i really loved some of these tracks. i think it suffered a lot from poor mixing, and at times the distorted guitar was a bit grating. 8/10
8/10. I'm hearing a lot more circus than bread in the first track, but maybe the lyrics I don't understand balance that out. Overall a fun album to listen to, I like that they changed up the pace a lot.
Weird psychedelia that manages to stay fresh for the whole album, though isn't exactly polished. 7
Baby & A Minha Menina are fantastic. This album is super cool and fun and psychedelic AF. And it’s Brazilian! Right up my street :) 🇧🇷
Thoroughly enjoyed their flare, especially with the Spanish vocals. Loved it, but 5 stars feels like a high bar that I’m not ready to dish out.
These songs are built on a 60's pop/rock core, but tons of experimental engineering which makes it a wild listen. Sometimes the recording sounds amazing---sometimes more of a miss. Sometimes very hectic, but lots of variety in the compositions. There's also a Brazilian flavor here---it doesn't come through on every song, but fun when it does. 1. Fun, upbeat. wacky breakdown. 2. Woah: When the fuzzy guitar comes in 3. I love the guitar at the beginning of this song too. This one is a welcome slow-down, with a busy break in the middle. 4. Starts with fun bird sounds/is that a bottle cap? Then monkey noises? A jungle jam for sure. 5. The full organ and voice contrasts nicely with the guitar, which sounds like it's being played through a broken pocket radio. ... 8. Reminds me of a Zombies song with samba-sort-of twist 9. This is a great song. Weird, slow, fun intro to something totally different. Catchy. 10. Awesome clarinet. 11. Best song on the album? Love the drums. Love the riff. Love the organ. Love the guitar solo. Score: 4 - loved it
In a strange psychedelic samba way, I liked this album!
Idk what they're saying but I can keep grooving to this. It has that "oh this has definitely been in a lot of movie soundtracks" quality to it. Timeless and boppin'
Muy interesante pero muy estraño
I definitely like this one. This is the kind of album I came here for. I’ve heard of it, but never listened to it for whatever reason. But what a beautifully bizarre album. This is another band that I’m aware of, yet have never listened to. Well, I’m about to get more familiar with them. Or at least a little bit, I don’t know, I don’t have the longest attention span. But this one’s great
I liked some of this alot. A little too meandering in the track list but lots of good stuff.
Look, we all know Robert Plant's favourite from this is "baby"...that's a given. I thought it was pretty cool.
The Brazilian Velvet Underground & Nico anyone? I really enjoyed the oddity of this.
Lekker experimentele rock. Hou ik wel van
One word Wednesday: FuzzyCoolPortugeseChoirBoyPsychedelia. (Is that one word?)
Very cool, like a psychedelic mixtape. Some insane Oboe and Bassoon playing too.
This was cool as hell, feels like dropping an alka seltzer into a cocktail
Bunt schillernde 3,6 Sterne

one word Wednesday: Weird.
Weird and charming. Feels like a hidden gem.
Fav Song: Trem Fantasma
Weird as hell but it's cool
An odd mixture of Sgt Peppers-era Beatles, early Grateful Dead, and Brazilian folk. Super odd, but grows on you over the course of the record. Not something I’ll be putting on at a party, but I liked it.
Ok
I wasn't in the mood for this one, but it's pretty relaxing, and I liked a lot of the cool-sounding instruments used throughout. It gets a pass, and I would have liked it more had I been feeling a bit better.
It is a little out there, but I kind of like it.
5.5/10
Interesting, entirely new to me! 3 tho
An interesting but somewhat odd album. I enjoyed the overall sound, which has something of a Velvet Underground vibe to it with more psychedelic influences. A Minha Menina was probably my highlight, and a rare track that features twice (on the far inferior album by The Bees). On the whole though, I think it needed more polish. We get quite a random array of sounds in each song, and it makes some tracks a bit too cluttered and unfocused. Worth a listen, but needed more refinement to be more than a 3.
Normally I love non English music but this was just boiler plate baroque 60s nonsense with a Brazilian twist. Didn’t really land with me
7/10 - One thing I love about the 1001 project is listening to music across generations. I hear sounds that I heard when listening to the Mama's and the Papa's (in A Minha Menina) and when listening to Love (in Trem Fantasma). Senhor F sounds very Beatles like. Its really cool hearing all that The album had its moments for me. But I think its experimental aspects put me off a bit. Respect for the album tho Fav Tracks: Tempo No Tempo, A Minha Menina Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ❌ Album Cover -------Should be Vampires
It was alright not something I’d go back to though
Very weird, but not actively annoying
Kinda weird, but sometimes nice. I liked Rita Lee's singing. It's quite relaxing.
This is #day671 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how about psychedelic pop from Brazil? I was skeptical, to be honest. But then again, late-'60s psychedelia is something I enjoy now and then. After a song or two, this turned out to be quite the eyebrow-raiser. Out of all world music I've encountered on this list so far, this has been the most fun. Very playful. Sometimes even jazzy. The female-sung songs are particularly bewitching. There's something almost carol-like about them. Great find. This is a strong 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day672.Looking forward to #day672.
Love the album cover. Nice of the band to get completely baked before taking the photo. It fits the music within.
Unfortunately my tolerance for late 60's psych is very low now. This was more fun then many of the other examples on this list but way behind the Hendrix gold standard so not sure what the point is.
Really loved how weird this was. Lot of cool shit and interesting choices going on here. Definitely enjoyed my time with it, but not something I see myself returning to.
It was fine.
Weird one! Pretty funky, but a little out there at times.
I liked listening to this. I recognise the second track from something. Can’t figure out whether it’s an advert or tv series though. No clue whatsoever as to what was being said though, which always makes me pensive.
Two Brazilian records in succession, different scores for different reasons. Where Jorge Ben Jor’s África Brasil earned a four through groove, personality, and genuine replayability, this one earns a high three through charm, curiosity, and a fun that doesn’t quite cross into essential. The record announces itself immediately with a triumphant trumpet intro — a signal that this band has no interest in meeting expectations and considerable interest in subverting them. Os Mutantes absorbed the White Album and Sgt. Pepper and then filtered both through Brazilian Tropicália, genuine mischief, and a willingness to get strange in ways that feel playful rather than self-serious. The Beatles influence is unmistakable and completely their own at the same time, which is rarer than it sounds. Rita Lee’s vocals give the record a distinctive personality, the guitar work is inventive throughout, and the whole thing has a quality of joyful experimentalism that distinguishes it from the more studied weirdness of European psychedelia from the same era. “Panis et Circenses” in particular shows a band fully committed to its own logic, orchestra and all. But the vinyl test came back clean — fun to spend time with, not something you’d reach for by choice. A high three that fully respects the playfulness and the craft without pretending to a personal connection that isn’t quite there.
Track 1 had me reaching for the off button more than once, but this site/list has taught me to give an album more a single track to fully judge it. It got a lot better after that. There were still undoubted moments of utter shite, but there were equal (if not a few more) good periods. I didn't have a fucking clue what they were saying, but that didn't distract too much. I'll never actively seek it out for a re-listen, but it was a worthwhile one-off experience.
I thought this was cool for sure but nothing really really exceptional
Buenos sonidos
beautiful
its fucking insane (not an insult btw)
Had never heard of the band coming in but turns out that I do know _A Minha Menina_, probably from the radio and a jolly good song it is too! I enjoyed this Brazilian take on 60s psychedelic rock, it felt familiar but with a refreshing edge to it. _Adeus Maria Fulô_ reminded me a bit of of something from _Satta_ by Boozoo Bajou who must have heard this befiore writing that album!
some of the instrumentals felt quite overwhelming as if every sound was all over the place, but an okay listen for the most part. however, my favorite track is "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour", track #8—it stands out more than the other tracks significantly with its unique instrumentals and vocals that I prefer significantly.
I don't hate the music but it's a bit retro for me. Rita Lee was a wonderful singer and political force.
This was interesting. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. The Portugese was interesting -- I think I would've liked it better if I understood what they were saying better. The music was good, but in the end it was just a little too dated and tinny sounding to be really great. It was worth listening to, but I don't think I have any desire to hear it again. Three stars.
A fun album that I couldn’t understand
Very reminiscent of my high school summer spent on the docks of the port of Santos near San Paulo overseeing the pineapple imports. Didn’t understand Portuguese then and still don’t. Nonetheless, a musically pleasant offering for the day.
Strange but I think I liked it?
Like 60s Beatles style pop bands but with hits in Portuguese
like Beatles but worse
Was nice but not something id listen to everyday i thought it was french in the beginning
Truly bizarre. I don’t know if I liked it, but it was certainly keeping me on my toes throughout. Points for creativity here I guess
Didn’t know psychedelic latin music was a thing. Fun listen but not sure I’d put my listening rotation though.
Best aardig. Maf album, blijkbaar historisch en zeer invloedrijk
I like the appeal of some international music. Cool psychedelia.
Definitely held my interest.
I think this is an acquired taste.
3.5
Some of this is overly psychedelic, and I am not the biggest fan of Brazilian music in general, but there are some awesome distorted guitar on this album. 3 stars
Not sold on all of Os Mutantes, but parts of it are cool, and it certainly is an interesting take on Brazilian music.
They used to be known as Os Tosseurs but they’ll always be Os Tossers to me. It’s a pretty psychedelic, scrappy, swinging sixties collection with a few manky elements (mainly the bloke vocals) but some really cool ones to make up for it (mainly the kerazee fuzz guitar). A couple of sultry Rita Lee sung ones plus the main standout A Minha Menina which appeared earlier on The Bees ex-1001 album Sunshine Hit Me. Low 3.5.
Interestingly eclectic mix of psychedelic rock
I enjoyed this, but it was a little too sedated to keep me super interested. I would live to see it live, though!
This is weird, in a good way. I don't see myself listening to this much after this initial listen, but I am happy about the journey this album sent me on.
WORLD music? WHIRLED music?? No, it's more psych rock. We have decided to include every psych album ever recorded and in that journey, we have decided to sample the acid of a whole different nation. Brazil! Oh god. I don't have a history of enjoying music from Brazil, unless it's Sepultura. At least this is far less likely to be disgruntled rich white kids! Despite the fact that there are far too many inclusions from this genre on this list, I found this to be a standout. Genuinely psychedelic with the music to back it up. Great fuzz on the guitars, whole whack of languages in the lyric sheet, and some genuinely unsettling/fascinating passages. Plus some Brazilian fellow kicked the shit out of me ion a game of online chess while this album played. Truly humbling. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Blotter paper
Chalk this up as a win in the "you've never heard something like this before" category. I didn't know how to listen to this at first, but it helped to read a basic description: Brazilian styles crossed with 60s psychedelia. And they lean heavy into the psychedelia.
6.5/10
Not bad
Oddly interesting? Interestingly odd? I'm not really sure which. But I started it and I didn't want to turn it off. Kind of groovy. Not sure it's my thing or I'd listen to it again, but kind of cool that I did once. Better than most of the strangely odd things on this list.
Universal?? Oh no?? Indiana Jones?? What?? Wait what?? I feel like I'm in Its A Small World. What are we talking about. Hello? Yeah man. I'm confused and intrigued. They're just hooting and hollering. That one meme of Meg from family guy in the contraption. This is what she was cooking up. Like I don't know what this is. I'm a little scared. Cocomelon?? I appreciate the creative risks but I unfortunately just don't like it. Wait I like the French one. Well hello Mr. Gengis. Interesting. Favourite: Le Premiere Bonheur Du Jour Least favourite: Adeus Maria Fulô
Highlights: A Minha Menina, Senhor F, Bat Macumba, Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour This was sure goofy and psychedelic. A bit too much actually, it felt kinda messy. The sound often changed from A to B to Z... Compared to an earlier tropicalia record I got on this list by Caetano Veloso, this is a lot less "Brazilian" and a lot more typical 60s "weed music". Heck, they even have a cover of a western song (but a good one)! The last song gives surfer vibes too, which I would rather associate with the US. But overall the record was very playful and a joy to listen to, at least most of the time, even though I understood jack shit of what was sung.
fine
Ha‘s am Afang so gar nöd gfühlt, isch aber dänn doch no iwie unterhaltsam worde
Konnte man gut so einfach nebenbei hören.
really pure 6/10
Really interesting and fun album. I think it's enhanced for me because I have no idea what they're saying. Lots of good and fun ideas! I think I like "Baby" the most; you can really hear a nice yearning quality in it.
I am Brazilian and it is crazy even for me, but I kind of like it.
3/5
This one is all over the place. Some of it is great, some of it is borderline unlistenable. It’s strange and fun at times, but dull at others, and by the end I’m not even sure how I feel about it.
I like this. It’s offbeat and interesting. I want to listen again. It could be a 4, but it’s a 3+ for now.
This is batshit and I could've given it any rating from 1-5 at various times. Was surprised I'd heard the second song before, perhaps it's been in a film or something like that. Anyway given how unsure I am, maybe it's fairest to just go down the middle and appreciate a record I'd have never listened to without this app
Fun. Lively.
Well, that was certainly something. Maybe I needed some ayahuasca in my coffee this morning. Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour is what I want a whole album of. The second half was better than the first.
Very interesting, you would need to be in a particular mood/headspace to listen to this
This was weird and fun. Don’t know if I’d ever listen to it again but this proper psychedelia
Interesting - not as twee/precious as some US contemporaries. First half better than the rest.
Was completely unaware of this band and album, glad it was on the list - truly original.
Vraiment weird, réellement psychédélique pour le coup
This is some weird, goofy songwriting. They were clearly enjoying a few psychedelics producing this album - it's vibrant, extremely raw, with some utterly odd soundscapes that you can't help but enjoy. The blend of rock & alternative influence into their sound works well too. Overall it's a very fun listen, but I'm probably not high enough to call it a masterpiece. There are too many “what the fuck” moments. 7/10.
What is this, The Velvet Underground & Rico? Really enjoyed despite the language barrier, and it's something I'd literally never ever have had a chance of knowing if not for it popping up on the list
This is pretty experimental and sounds ahead of its time in a way that some of the Beatles albums do from this time. Some of the effects on here don't sound that special in today's music but I can't really think of many songs from the sixties that sound like this. Again think this would be more popular in general if it was in English 3
Ooh Brasiliens bidrag numero doos me.
A few songs I really liked (and heard of before). Overall a good album but not something I will immediately be listening to again.
Not sure what to think of this. Weird as fuck but kinda catchy and cheerful too. Don't think I'll listen to it again though.
before listening: what in the world? maybe international bg music? after listening: oh wow that was pretty cool lol
Favorite Track: A Minha Menina
95. interesting, a nice change
Interesting sounds but obviously lyrics not understood. More my style of sound than typical British and American pop and rock.
414/1089 - The jingly clacky percussion on this is really annoying. Way too upfront in the mix and high frequency. This is the only album so far I've had to listen to at 1 tick of volume. Textural variation between tracks is nice but the songs themselves are mostly strophic and uninteresting.

Bonkers. But fun.
Not quite sure about this one. Just when it seems to overdo the Brazilian (which taps on my eardrums after a while) it goes gloriously psychedelic. Between a 2 and a 4??
3.5
It's giving Sgt. Pepper's or Sgt. Pepper is giving Os Mutantes.
It's the psychedelic Latin version of The Beatles, and that there is such a thing is proof my sweet Lord really does work in mysterious ways. Favorite Track: "Baby".
meh
No idea what was going on here but super cool
Those crazy frenchies
Felt like I was on some hot Brazilian drugs.
This is a weird one. Definitely some similarities to very early Pink Floyd, but in Portuguese. Still, I enjoyed it (at least for a one off drive to work).
I wasn’t about when Kurt Cobain tried to get Os Mutantes to reunite, but I was there for the master reissue push in the early 2000s, when the band was being written up in the all major publications. And I fell for it. I got Os Mutantes and A Divina Comedia, Rita Lee’s solo debut, Build Up, which was rereleased through El, I think. And I even got an album by Rogerio Duprat, the orchestrator of the early Mutantes records, where he produced a tropicalia version of Brahms’ 4th. It is all pretty chaotic, fun stuff. And, while I have not listened to the records in years, I find myself humming several songs regularly: A Minha Menina, Baby, and Bat Macumba. While this record suffers from many superficial problems common to psych albums, there is a sacrificial layer of foreignness that protects it. The grounding in blues keeps much American psych from sounding truly out there, but Bossa Nova is still a trip. British psych often falls into recognisable twee, but what may be twee to the Brazilians remains Exotica to us. Psychedelica always sought the “curiouser and curiouser” surprise of Alice in Wonderland and Os Mutantes is certainly a curio, kept tantalisingly distant by its language, its cultural references, and some of its techniques. A little orientalism risks creeping in on my part - Is that wild bass distortion intentional or a sign of compromised resources? Oh, that’s not a badly recorded flute, it’s a recorder! Can they possibly be referencing Sunshine Superman on Trem Fantasma? Are the parts of the record I find funny intended to be funny? They certainly have a sense of humour, even if I can parse nothing of it. 3 What a nice surprise! There is a lovely texturality about this album; the intimate recording of vocals (and all kinds of mouth noises) and the daft banquet of different woodwind and percussion instruments. You can practically taste some of those sounds. It’s a lovely, odd piece of recording. In terms of songwriting or musical structures of any kind I don’t believe it offers much beyond meandering whimsy, but meandering whimsy is plenty for this charming 35 minute album. That said, I also enjoyed the advantage of speaking no French or Portuguese and so could happily file away the word sounds as part of the carnival of slurp sounds, finger clicks, ocarinas, bird chirps, recorders and autoharp strumming without being bothered whether any trite sentiments or bad poetry were being expressed. A delight. 3/5
I was prepared not to like this but it actually has some tunes! Recognised a couple from old GTA soundtracks, Bat Macumba is definitely off an advert or something as well. Turns out Brazilian fuzzed up psychedelia is quite enjoyable.
Trippy fun!
Ahead of their time.
Although it was often a cacophony of sounds, I generally liked the music. However, since I couldn’t understand any of the lyrics, I can’t give it above a 3/5.
who up osing they mutantes rn
Though it wears the psychedelic rock of the USA and UK on its sleeve, the self-titled debut from Os Mutantes manages to infuse its own Brazilian tropicalia flair to create something new and fun.
It grew on me. I think some of the mixing was quite odd but it was fun and interesting.
Tropicalia is a movement which I had no knowledge of at all until I came across this. “Os Mutantes” is a really interesting listen. A blend of so many sounds borne out of the rise of electric guitar driven psychedelic music from the USA and the British Blues Invasion. The crunchy guitar tone on songs like “A Minha Menina” really spoke to me and despite not understanding a word of the lyrics I felt able to infer a lot of emotion from the vocal performance. This will almost certainly merit a re listen and I can see it growing on me massively when I next stick it on.
3.5
3 bara pga O Baby, annars 2-2.5
for a sec i thought: what beatles album is this? However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out NO BEATLES Honestly still slayed very much, not really my type of shit, but I appreciate it. Sounds more fun that you know who
A really fun album. I am starting to hear some similarities in the sound of songs of this time. :)
? This shit sounds like a bad trip although Ive never had psychedelics before. Also there’s a fucking French song. 3/5
Brazilian 60s music. 60s music in Brazil. The music is Brazilian but from the 60s. The 60s music was made in Brazilian. 6/10
Brazilian Beatles
This is album is an example of a topical discussion that is going on right now, more-so in communist America. What I’m referring to is the Super Bowl Half Time show with Bad Bunny. The fact that he sung in Spanish apparently made the snowflake MAGA get their panties in a bunch. I heard a lot of rhetoric that because it wasn’t in English, that no one could understand it and therefore it would not illicit any emotion and people couldn’t connect with it. Which is absolutely bull shit. And just another way to say “I’m a racist piece of shit”. This record in particular, although, stylistically isn’t my forte, was pretty enjoyable. Primarily not sung in English but despite that you can easily connect with the feel of the album. And let’s be honest, even if it was in English, and the words were right there, in front of you, that doesn’t mean you understand the songs. Music is subjective and a lot of the times writers write personally and the words and meanings behind songs are often are unapparent and implicit. Left for the listener to come up with their own interpretations. Whereas the music in itself is universal. Anyone can feel joy from a major chord and sadness from a minor chord. Vocalists use their voice as an instrument. Words can ultimately contradict or push the emotion forward within the song by singing notes and melodies. But some people are inept and soulless to understand this. They need it in a solid colour. I guess that describes MAGA… they hate colours.
I don't understand any of the words so it's kind of unfair to judge it too harshly. The music is nice
Very experimental but I found that fun. I also liked the one song that was in French for some reason?! Some of the instrumentals were a little abrasive but I liked the overall construct of the songs.
It's always harder when I don't speak the language, since there's a whole dimension I can't engage with. This rating doesn't say anything about the music's objective/historical quality, just how it hits me specifically. Very complex and varied instrumentals that I mostly liked a lot.
I enjoyed the instrumentation in this album. It felt cool and different.
Totally new for me. Fun and suprising listen, saved some songs.
I was only previously aware of Os Mustantes because I read The Beastie Boys Book, in which they discuss being influenced by and sampling heavily from this album. This added a fun, extra wrinkle to me as I'm trying to nail down what I *think* I recognized from Paul's Boutique. The opening track made me fear I was in for what I derisively call circus music, a sort of psychedlica reminiscent of the bad tracks on Piper at the Gates of Dawn or The Doors when they indulge their worst impulses (see also: Steely Dan). There certainly was some of that throughout, but it wasn't overwhelming. I enjoyed it a lot when they started letting the fuzzy guitar buoy the entire song, or when they lapsed into a sort of blissed-out Sgt. Pepper but Brazillian mode. Dug it, may play it again at some point. Highlights: "O Relogio" "Baby" "Bat Macumba" Lowlights: "Panis Et Circenses", much of "Ave Gengis Khan"
Don't generally like stuff from the 60s, this is better than the "usual" but possibly only because it's more unique than the rest and Portuguese is my 2nd language. Not sure I'll listen again though.
fun, A Minha Menina is a tune
Ret fedt, sku lige vænne mig til det, man burde måske høre noget mere braziliansk psych!
Top songs: A Minha Menina Senhor F Tempo no Tempo
Sometimes cool, sometimes like having a bee stuck in your brain
Pretty funky. Need to revisit again
Mjög steikt og mjög gaman inn á milli
First couple notes, I figured this was a 1. Turns out it's actually pretty damn cool. Brazilian avant-garde from the 60s and it's still super-listenable and unique. One of the more surprising 4s to date. Fave tracks: - A Minha Menina - O Relógio - Adeus Maria Fulô - Senhor F - Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour - Trem Fantasma - Tempo No Tempo - Ave Gengis Khan Edit: Okay, so turns out I never feel like listening to this. Go figure. I still maintain that this is a very cool, very good album. Maybe more of a 3 though.
YEAH
That was pretty damn cool.
Interesting album but still a 3
preferred the last half of the album <3
Yikes. Okay, this is not my thing. There was a stretch of songs - Senhor F, Bat Macumba, and Le premier bonheur du jour - that I enjoyed a little, but that was it. I won’t be listening to this again.
Okay. Not my taste.
I don't know what to make of this one. Strange, silly at times. 2 stars seems harsh, but 3 seems like too much. I'm thinking 3 because it's different and not in English.
Weird in a cool way but not really my thing
I love weird music, and I would probably never have heard this without this website. The first 4 songs don’t really do anything for me, not quite sure why, but the rest was great. I love the weird sounds and general insanity. 3/5
A fuzzed out psychedelic color bursting cocktail of an album from Brazil circa 1968. It's pretty good but gets old fast and seems directionless even for music this out there. It seems to exist for no real reason other than because it can. I doubt I'll ever get the urge to play it again, but it was interesting and worth the time I spent with it but it's a one & done.
Something different for sure! Quite whimsical. Brazilian Pink Floyd mixed with salsa? While not my home turf, I really enjoyed some tracks like 'O Relógio' and 'Bat Macumba'. Overall the tone of the album just made me feel good and cheerful. Not something I'll play every day, but I'm glad I heard this. Can definitely see why this has a place on the list!
Not sure if this was meant to be taken seriously or not. Like a mix of Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band and The Beatles but in Portugese. Stradled the line between classic psych and comedyband. Bits that stood out were the annoying parts like “Trem Fantasma” but also the quite good tracks like “A Minha Menina” which has a good groove to it. At least it was different, going to give it a 3.
The Brazeatles
All of psychedelia all wrapped up into 1 album. It's all in there. Groovy.
Solid album
Add it to the pile of weird late 60's drugged out rock albums on the list, but this time with some Latin flair (that was easily the best part) 6/10
Brazilian psychedelic rock band. Sort of sounded like if Cream or Iron Butterfly spoke Portuguese. It was alright, but I probably would have enjoyed it more if I was stoned or took a hit of acid. 3/5
I like this album for two main reasons. I like 60's rock/ pop, and I like Latino beats. Both are fully present in this album and easy to enjoy. The only thing that kind of might be negative in the right circumstances is that it IS very 60's vibe. I find "timeless" music to be the most refreshing and interesting, with era music taking up a less esteemed position. That is me. If one were to be throwing a 60's themed party or whatever... Different story!
Better then i expected. A fun psychedelic record
pretty nice
Pleasantly bonkers 🤪
Certainly interesting and culturally undeniable, but it doesn’t do it for me. The language barrier is probably an obstacle, but I’ve fallen in love with albums full of lyrics I understand less. As a 60s psych album, I don’t know that there’s much that really stands out. There’s distinctly Brazilian instrumentation, but it comes off more as a curiosity than a meaningful sonic innovation that really adds something to the music. It does a lot of things really well—some of the distorted guitar tones, more ambient feel of drums and keys with lots of reverb on the vocals—that make it a good psych album. I just think there are maybe a dozen other albums with a similar sonic aim that scratch that itch better for me. Baby is a standout track. Maybe not one I’d frequently come back to, but I really think it stands up favorably with most other similar tracks of the era—the distorted guitar really adds a lot of character. An interesting album and one I don’t regret listening to, but, apart from the interest of the uniquely Brazilian instrumentation, just not one I think I’d come back to. There are many psych albums I prefer and I don’t have enough experience with Brazilian music post-Mutantes to appreciate their influence.
Reminded me of the Beatles a bit at times. No idea what was said, but mostly enjoyable aside from some harsh noises from time to time. 3/5
Kind of fun
Cool. Sounds like early Pink Floyd Brazilian Style
That was fun. Very strange and also very familiar at the same time. If they sang in English and grew up in England or the US, they would have been a major player in late.60s rock
Today I learned that psychedelia in other languages is *~*~*~eVeN mO000oo0OrE p$yCh3DeLic~*~*~*
I must admit that I didn’t really love it but understand why it is on this list. It is certainly funky and different.
If The Beach Boys were from Brazil, basically. Interesting enough to not get a bad score from me, but as always, I'm not a fan of 60's psychedelia.
What can I say...? I don't understand a word they're saying, but listening to this makes sense of every terrible, hackneyed "groovy" movie soundtrack of the late 60s/early 70s. And that's not yo say it's bad. It's really not! It's just very much of its time. I quite like it (and I'd love to know what they were taking in the studio) but as more of a novelty or period touchstone. Not enough to have it on rotation, but I also wouldn't consign it to the bin.
No. 329/1001 Panis et Circenses 3/5 A Minha Menina 3/5 O Relógio 3/5 Adeus, Maria Fulô 3/5 Baby 3/5 Senhor F 3/5 Bat Macumba 2/5 Le Premier Bonheur du Jour 4/5 Trem Fantasma 3/5 Tempo No Tempo 3/5 Ave Gengis Khan 2/5 Average: 2,91 Weird album. Not my personal taste. Still a refreshing listen.
I doubt I'd ever have listened to this if it wasn't for this service. Nice collection of psych rock from Brazil. Favorite track: A Minha Menina
This really caught me off guard. Some parts of it, not so good. Other parts, a really interesting and fun blend of their traditional Brazilian music and psychedelic rock. Notable standouts are Bat Macumba and A Minha Menina. On the latter, I loved the combo of the acoustic and the gritty guitar, but what's odd is when I first heard it I was not a fan then all of a sudden it clicked and I was digging it. Fun trip.
You know what, sure! Best Song: Bat Macumba Rating: 6/10 Stars: 3
Es un album en portuges, molt original. M'ha recordat al circ.
Maybe this is more like a 3.5 I guess? It was pretty decent.
I really didn’t think I was going to make it through this album, but at only 36 minutes I felt like I had to. I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t my favorite album but better than I anticipated. Very Beatles-esque.
Quite bonkers. Quite brilliant, Brazilian 60s psychedelia.
It's pretty sick that Brazil was getting into psych at the same time as Britain and America. This wasn't super unusual - there's a lot of psych rock that came out of Cambodia, Singapore and Zimbabwe as well. The appeal of the fuzz couldn't be denied. Melding its psych influences with the pre-existing tropicalia and bossa nova sounds of Brazilian music has helped Os Mutantes self-titled stick out over the decades. Of the 60s bands it's modeled on, I think Os Mutantes reminds the most of the Monkees. They both feel specifically curated for television but the quality of the music exceeds that sort of "made for television" band like idk the Coswells/Partridge Family. The gothic album art feels misleading, looking at it, you'd think they were beating Black Sabbath to the punch, but on listening to the album, I get it. One of my favorite undercurrents of the 1960s counter-culture aesthetic was how people would source Universal and Hammer horror films as shorthand for freaking people out. This is what Os Mutantes is doing. The music itself is pretty benign and pleasant but it is also a degree stranger than what was playing on Brazilian radio and in record shops at the time. The best tracks are those that lean into the psych-pop and bossa nova stuff the most. Like a lot of experimental psych rock of the time, I'm not sure how much of it has aged particularly well. A lot of it is just noodling around on a Hammond organ or inserting nature sounds. But Gawrsh, A Minha Menina is easily top 50 tracks of the decade. And Bat Macumba. Just toss that one around in your mouth a few times. Bat Macumba. Bat Macumba. Bat Macumba. Favorite Tracks: A Minha Menina, Bat Macumba, Baby
And this album is the very reason why this project is so worth while. Had never heard of this band and it is like they have said, “ you know those Beatles boys and all the Sgt Pepper/ Revolver stuff they are doing? What if we did that but with a Brazilian twist! Well it is great in a very weird way and I enjoyed it.
I appreciate their influence on modern music, but this album didn’t leave an impression on me. I’ve seen them live this year and I really enjoyed it though.
Is ok
Yeah it’s way out and different, liked some songs, found others a little too strange
Really interesting/fun production. Some of the sound quality was a bit fuzzy/harsh but overall it wasnt too bad? Solid 3 on this one
I like experimental music, but this just seems like "lol we are so random". It's fine. Mid 3.
Loved the sound overall. Psychedelic Brazilian...Background music covering a range.
Quirky and varied—even all-over-the-map. I like the range of sounds, which, somehow, don’t pull the album out of 60s psychedelia. Not too much, anyway. Still, some of the songs veer a little dangerously toward . . . novelty music.
This is very weird but somehow I liked it. It was different from other things.
I thought I would hate this, based on the description, and although there were moments that were too close to San Francisco psychedelia for my liking, generally I found it to be a fun and interesting listen.
This is the good kind of weird, which just gets better for each listen. Much more interesting than 13th Floor Elevators, miming 60s psychedelia with latin rhytms and general weirdness. I wouldn’t put on any of these songs individually, but as an album it is quite the journey
I had no idea what to expect before listening. I saw the name and cover and had zero recognition. It's weird. It's weird in a fun way though. Like you listen and the track ends and you have a second to think and the next track could be a more straight forward song. They had fun making it. OH also they are Brazilian so don't expect English. Ups the "WHAT?" factor a bit, keeps you going.
Surprisingly good. Can't call myself a fan of African music, but even for me this was an enjoyable listen
Nice
I really enjoyed this album. Crazy and energetic. Awesome album cover.
Rights, lads, remember when we promised there would be no Ayahuasca in the studio? Lads? Lads!?
I can’t say that I liked it, but there was enough charm to offset the long stretches of weirdness.
Very late 60's sounding stuff. It's sorta fun. I think I enjoyed it more because it wasn't in English.
Close to giving it 4. Solid 3
Very interesting album.
Alright little 60's garage rock band with a South American flair.
odd!
entretenido
Okay. You got me. I recognize the name having seen it over the years. In my mind I had associated this band with a more progressive rock sound. Not sure why that happened. Perhaps when I first heard someone mention them in connection with Brazilian rock. Whatever the reason, this debut record from 1968 is certainly not prog rock. Rather, it is best described as a mix of psychedelic pop, garage rock, and what I’ve come to learn are Topicali influences. For my taste, A Minha Menina is a pretty catch garage influenced track worth repeated listening. There are a couple of ballads, and in particular the songs O Relogio and Adeus Maria Fulo that capture the sounds of the forest and give the record its distinctive character. Does it all work? No. There are a couple of missteps along the way. The showtune Senhor F is a skip. Just corny and terrible. Ave Genghis Kahn with its Peanuts intro also comes off rather clunky. In soaking in the album a little bit and playing it several times, Bat Macumba, Baby and Panis Et Circenses are the other standouts. Overall, not a standout but would have been a solid record at the time. Interesting mix of influences but there were better rock records from this time period.
That was pretty fun. The Brazilian Beatles get a 3/5 from me.
Not bad. Weird fun.
Nuevo genero desbloqueado: brazilian acid. 3.5
okkk 7/10
Gran disco de world music brasilero
Pretty cool psychedelia
This was pretty good. It probably would have been much better if I understood Spanish.
Weird sixties with that fuzzy ass guitar, not bad despite me not understanding any of the songs (2.5/5)
Well this one was quite a pleasant surprise. Definitely lots of energy and personality in here. I like the mad trumpet and the dirty bassline in some of these songs. There's lots going on, but it's cohesive, and quite varied throughout. 3.5 rounded down.
Spanish Beatles
Jolly but drags on a bit
I långa loppet blir tre nog rimligt.
- Portugiesische Mamas & Papas (Mambas&Sambas) - Samples+Einspieler - Fuzz Gitarre / Psychedelica
Miz Pink Floyd,the rolling stones
This is some wacky shit—fun! but wacky.
Every now and then the list throws up something off the wall and while not earth shattering warrants being on it. On one level it seems another psychedelia entry but as with the genre it has a latin twist. Fun and frighteningly listenable.
A pretty good time, but not interesting enough for me to return to.
Another band I have never heard of, another chance to be surprised and delighted. I recognise A Minha Menina. Overall, yeah, this is fine, but in its favour is the fact that I like being made to listen to experimental 1960s Brazilian psychedelia much much more than I like having to listen to another Paul Simon solo album.
Pretty funky and psychedelic which is fun for a while but didn't strike me as something new or different from other late '60s psychedelia
has sgt pepper vibes with the piccolo trumpets, etc. They do overdo the trumpets though :) Favorite track: Le premier bonheur du jour picks: bat macumba, a minha, panis et circenses
Panis et Circenses A Minha Menina Bat Macumba
Good for work? A little too experimental for me.
Had doubts at first but it sucked me in and held me till the end. Fun ride.
Interesting, and opened my eyes to brazilian psychedelic music, but I'd like to hear it remastered
I liked it! High 3
😊
This album is just “out there” enough to remain interesting. Though I feel they are trying too hard sometimes, it is overall an enjoyable listen. 3/5
eh
Some bangers and some weird old psychedelic crap.
Deliciosa! The kookier the better and this is the better.
On one hand I kinda liked it but on the other hand wtf did I just listen to. 3 stars
Fun album, quirky as hell, but I enjoyed it.
Yeah what the fuck. I will not mention "this one time I listened to this Brazilian Psychedelic Rock band from the late 60s and quite liked it" to anyone, to appear completely eccentric.
Really cool and feels very modern. Don't think I would actively go back and listen but interesting enough.
Its weird, and I like that.
Also this was probably hyped by cobain Good psyc rock but lacking emotion
Interesting! But probably won’t listen again.
A pleasant surprise for what I thought I was going to get but not any more pleasant than a 3
Cool garage-y psych rock with enough holiness to grab me even in another language. Still a bit too psychedelic for me but I liked it.
Brazilian Beatles. A wild ride!
