Really enjoyed this & will listen again. Wish I understood Portuguese
I have enjoyed quite a bit of psych in my time, but if the genre's stated goal is to invoke the experience of a high, I can't say a lot of psych is necessarily successful. California Dreamin', Blue Jay Way, some Animal Collective songs, Bitches' Brew; these works all manage to pull it off, and Os Mutantes is on the list now. I stumbled across a Youtube video once that claims to recreate a salvia trip, and the video is all disjointed music over weird children's animation visuals and footage of industrial machinery, and everyone in the comments is like, "yup, that's it, got it in one". And the sound on Os Mutantes is kind of like this particular video. Listening to this makes me feel like I'm taking research chemicals in a circus-themed tiki bar where I'm the only person who can't speak Brazilian Portuguese. I've heard weirder and louder and more difficult music, but this is truly some of the trippiest shit I've *ever* heard. The combination of psych and Brazilian music puts me outside of my comfort zone a little, and then, perhaps fittingly, they mutate this sound in any way you could think. We have weird chanting, ocarinas, musique concrete that drops into technicolor pop, the most fucked up fuzz guitar this side of noise rock, and on one occasion, what sounds to be rhythmic sniffing. And the way the mix is handled has different components come towards and away from the listener in a truly jarring way. And every song has a set of new tricks up its sleeves, and they are all successful examples of psychedelic music. But to name a couple of favorites, Bat Macumba sounds fucking insane, and Adeus Maria Fulô is the most indescribable combination of textures I've heard in a minute. *And*, behind the fuckery, the songs still manage to be great: A Minha Menina and Trem Fantasma are particularly striking as examples of psychedelic pop. I've tried to think of any reason not to give this a 5, and I kind of can't. This is such an incredible execution of truly experimental psychedelic concepts, and it is an utterly successful psych album. If you wish psych took it all just a *little* further, this may be the album for you.
Brilliant album, right there among the greatest psychedelic rock albums from that era. It's mixed with traditional Brazilian music, psychedelic rock and even avantgarde/music concréte. It's fantastically progressive. The Brazilian Portuguese and French singing make this more dreamy and even more interesting. I recommend it to anyone to listen it more than once as the nuances and layers can't really be heard at first listen. I am not from UK/US so maybe I am more open to other languages and cultures on this challenge but this album is a good reminder that there are gems from other countries too so one should listen to everything with an open ear and mind.
Trem Fantasma
So fun!
I absolutely am in love with this album. I would own an original pressing if it wasn't 1000.00.
I didn't understand the words but I had fun regardless 🔥
This album is pretty unhinged, and in all the best ways. It really earns its psychadelia badge as this is dripping with acid. The songs are all over the place and the fact it's in Portuguese only helps with the disorientation it causes, for me at least. A Minha Menina is great and Baby strangely reminds me of some Cage the Elephant from 40 years later. Senhor F sounds like some of the weirder Beatles. All in all, I really enjoyed how all over this was.
Ended up really liking this. It felt quite experimental. The sounds they put on display were quite unique. I loved it.
Really, very unexpected, unique, and a lot of fun!! I'm not typically into psychedelic 60s stuff, but this was catchy and it really grew on me. I listened to it 3 times straight and by the third time I found myself singing along to several of these songs. I 5 star, hidden gem :) :)
An album that demonstrates that there's no supremacy in music and culture. Cultural dictators need to learn that good music isn't just about English. So swallow this one! Better than many generic American psychedelic albums. It's clear that it's influenced by other languages, not just American/English. Musically impeccable! The recording and production reflect the era, and it was recorded with the technology of the time. Latin America Live!
Soo weird. I have a feeling even if I understood Portuguese i wouldn't understand what they're singing about
Le Premier Bonheur du Jour SLAPS HARD
It's super neat to see a style which has popped up numerous times on this list be adapted to a different language and culture, Os Mutantes does not disappoint on that front. The Neatles-esque sounds of this album and Portuguese lyrics make for a unique and valuable listening experience. I expect that my appreciation of this album will only grow on repeat listens, and am rating it accordingly. Favorite track: "A Minha Menina"
Cool stuff. Not great background music, but I'd listen again.
An excellent late 60s psychedelic record from Brazil. Clearly indebted to the Beatles and US psych bands but Os Mutantes also push the boundaries of the genre by taking more risks. I thought that their use of musique concrete was rather innovative. That said, their avant garde tendencies are tempered by their immensely catchy pop melodies.
Ok that was fire
- I can't add anything worthwhile to this. It's a record that changed me the first time I heard it. -
funk. Groove. Sharp. Delightfull !
Here’s a deep cut I’d never heard from an amazing year in music. Genre bending, psychedelic, and experimental. It’s not flawless but it gets 5 stars from me - because it’s just the kind of treasure I hope to find among in the 1001. Enjoyed it and will return to it!
That was an unexpectedly phenomenal album. I loved it!
Perfect album! Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour is a masterpiece. Very interesting band. Never heard it before. Thanks.
Os mutantes: Cool. Only thing that reminds me of magical mystery tour that I actually like. More musical than most of the other experimental psychedelic stuff. Cool how o Reloggio alternates from ethereal to trashy groove. Baby is a cool song I prefer the Gal Costa/ Caetano Veloso versions. Bat macumba has cool fuzzed out guitars and a jammy vibe. that effect on the lead is cool but way too loud! Least fav was ave ghenkis khan
Love the 60s psychedelia mixed with Brazilian pop
Never listened to Brazilian music so this will be exciting! I don't speak Portuguese so I had no idea what was going on but I sure enjoyed the ride. I really really liked it. Overall: 5/5
So much fun! I didn’t understand what was happening at times but I loved it.
Finalmente! Psicodelia. Rita Lee. Tropicália. São Os Mutantes porra. Qualquer nota abaixo de 5 seria criminoso.
I would live to be sitting in a bar in Brazil drinking caparenhas listening to this.
Eccentric, eclectic, melodic, and a joy from start to finish. A bona fide psychedelic essential - maybe not for all tastes, but definitely an album everyone should hear at least once. Fabulous.
It's goofy, silly and incredibly fun to listen to. It might not be the most consitent album out there, but I can't give it anything other than full marks for its influence and how much I enjoy listening to it. A Minha Menina is an incredible song and there's a lot of other great parts on this album as well. Tropicalia is great to listen to and this was my gateway into Brazillian music and MPB.
Super fun record. Really enjoyed the different sounds and meandering songs that took me to them
This is the 82nd album I’m rating. I don’t know what this album is or who any of these people are. Adding to my Playlist - Panis et Circenses, A Minha Menina, O Relógio, Adeus Maria Fulô, Baby, Senhor F, Bat Macumba, Le Premier Bonheur du Jour, Trem Fantasma, Tempo no Tempo, and Ave Genghis Khan. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. All in all I liked 11/11 songs. I think I might just love tropicália because this is great. I really haven’t heard anything like this and I am glad that I listened to it before I died else I would’ve missed out on some great catchy songs.
beatifull
Brazilian band interesting
Love this band, love this album. Listened to it maybe 5 times today. 5 stars.
Wow! Hele gave echt psychedelische muziek.
My favorite Brazilian psychedelic rock.
I peeped at other reviews that were written about this article and one that made me laugh was that they “weren’t stoned enough for this.” Maybe I AM stoned enough for this but I dig it. I love the garage rock influences here, everything just a little gritty. Combined with some incredible drumming. It’s a multigenre impressive piece of work. Before writing this little review I looked up the Wikipedia page of the band to learn more and what a story! Now I can’t speak Portugese so I don’t really understand what they’re singing about (I’m gonna listen through with autotranslator maybe because I liked this so much) but incredible that this music almost caused a riot!
The tropicalia sounds are new to me, the loud and heavy mixes with trocipal sounds are very interesting. The 60s vibe collide with surreal and personal themes, makes this an album I had the joy of listening to it, fully.
EXCELLENT. As a YouTube commenter said, "the Brazilian Beatles"
i adore this album
It’s really weird, but in a good way. It’s both enjoyable and completely different from the rest of the list, so you know what? I’ll give it 5 stars.
This is a hauntingly beautiful, funny, crazy album - from the cool surfy A Minha Menina to the array of psychadelic reverb drenched songs it’s interesting and inspiring even after tens of listens - to me this is an awesome record. Need to learn Portuguese to appreciate another dimension of it though
Since following this list, any album I haven't heard that's some combination of psychedelic rock and the avant garde is okay by me. There's just more of it than I ever knew haha
This album is a sheer delight. I knew many of the songs from the Best Of collection, but the rest were all solid jams too. I’d definitely give this a closer relisten; would likely be a 4 but am gonna round up.
The brazillian beatles are weird and it's so perfect. Catchy, interesting, arresting and often beautiful
Brazilian psychedelia par excellence! This is such a banger! Maybe its hard to understand if this is your first encounter with Brazilian music but if you know some other artists it’s a perfect album.
Wow this was a surprise. I loved it. I;d never heard of him before. I really enjoyed the dreamlike tunes.
Utter madness zero sadness sparking great joy psychedelia ahoy ne'er heard anything like this not causing a miss so much fun this is a good 'un
What a fascinating, forward thinking album. Really unexpected and deeply satisfying.
No idea what’s going on here, but I like it. Track 2 just finished and I loved it. I’m really enjoying this album. This album is just wonderful.
This is so quirky and I’m super obsessed with it. Every song brought something delightfully new and interesting. I’m interested to see how much relisten value it maintains. For now though, it’s definitely a 5.
what a masterpiece - how have I not come across "Os Mutantes" before?
Os Mutantes is the debut album by Os Mutantes, originally released in 1968. Holy shit. I've heard of this band being discussed in psych circles in the past but I totally forgot about them until now. This is so damn cool. I feel like when most people think of the first wave of psych rock they automatically think of the San Francisco scene and the hippies. Maybe swinging London. The truth is the hippie/psychedelic movement was happening in a lot more places. Sometimes it happened later than the US, such as the Zambian psych movement. But others happened right in tandem, such as Brazil. Os Mutantes were at the forefront of the Brazilian psych movement. And this is way more than just garage rock. The compositions are very creative and draw the listener in, wondering what will happen next. The only other album I could compare this to is Sgt Pepper. It gives off that same vibe and wide range of styles. This thing has everything from horns to acoustic ballads to rocking fuzz guitar. Drop a tab and throw this one on the turntable and you'll be in for a great trip.
Good music from front to back. Every song is different and they're all great
This rules.
A little rough around the edges but really fun. Could totally see myself throwing this on again for some good vibes.
Surprisingly loved this. It really grew on me as it went on.
Awesome. Sounds great. Spacey and fun. I would totally put this on in the background for a barbecue. Feels like the beatles in spirit and quality but foreign. Im suprised I havent heard this group before.
I think that this album is criminally overlooked. We would do well to get outside of our Anglo-American concentration and see how what we are familiar with influences and has been influenced by what we are not familiar with.
Only a recent discovery for me. I got into them after reading their praises sung in the Beastie Boys Book. I had no doubt heard and came across their songs before during the lounge music revival of the 90s - I did latch onto Esquivel & Gilberto Gil during that time. OS Mutantes elevates that sound with a healthy dose of psychedelic garage rock that no doubt inspired a bunch of other bands
On the first listen I had a great time. I was thinking 'now this is my kind of messy.' It's fun, it's all over the place in a good way, and I just like it. On the second listen I could focus on the technical ability and the fusion inspirations the artists took from. Love it.
I’ve never heard of this artist before, but based on the description of the album, this is exactly the reason that I signed up for this project. I’m excited to give this a listen. Heading into this project, I thought I liked 60’s psychedelic music, but that hasn’t really been the case as much as I go through a lot of these albums. This album, however, was right up my alley. It’s different without being really weird and unique while still feeling really accessible (other than the fact I don’t speak Portuguese, but thank thankfully Chat GPT could give me some insight to the lyrical content of the songs). Musically, this album is incredibly diverse, but still feels cohesive, a feat that I feel can be difficult to achieve. The fuzzy guitar tones and distortion sound really great in combination with the rhythms and percussion (I assume that’s where a lot of the Brazilian influences in this album lie). Reading up on this album, I see that a lot of the lyrical content is protesting dictatorial military rule in Brazil at the time, which I can always get behind (by the way, super fun to raise two young kids in America right now, especially with a presidential candidate getting shot at over the weekend). Back to the musical content though: I’ve heard The Bees’ version of “A Minha Menina” when I reviewed their album, but this version was far better. I loved the playful tone, upbeat tempo, and dance worthy percussion. One thing that I think this album did really well, is that the song structures are really unique. “O Relógio” was a prime example of this. I liked how the song started off with a dreamy tone, before shifting to more traditional psychedelic sounds, and then shifting back to the dreamy tone to close. I really enjoyed “Ave Genghis Khan” as well. The piano riff was fantastic, and the jazzy percussion combined with the electronic elements gave it a really fun sound. This was a really great album and it was a really awesome experience to listen something so different. This isn’t necessarily the type of album that I’d gravitate towards, but I can understand and appreciate why it was on this list.
Brilliant, bonkers, ideas overspilling everywhere, great tunes, weird noises, and uplifting joy.
I wanna learn Portuguese now.
Brazil Mentioned! Brazil Mentioned! So good to hear something from my motherland. And what an album! Revolutionary and psychedelic. It represents some of the best Brazilian music has to offer. VIVA RITA LEE!!
Heck yeah. 60's psychedelia from Brazil that's as weird as can be. Take all my stars.
Here’s a deep cut I’d never heard from an amazing year in music. Genre bending, psychedelic, and experimental. It’s not flawless but it gets 5 stars from me - because it’s just the kind of treasure I hope to find among in the 1001. Enjoyed it and will return to it!
This is some excellent South American, 60’s, psychedelic music! A really cool album diverse and complete, I didn’t always vibe with every song, but when they were good, they were GOOD. The language barrier didn’t matter as the instrumental and atmosphere were very strong. A clear 5
Finally. Something that gets us to travel outside of the anglo-dominant music world! This is delightfully weird, all over the place, exploded and inventive. It just packs a lot in its 37 minutes, so much so that to fully digest it one day is not enough. The voices, the guitars, all go to some pretty strange places that I know nothing about. It travels in time and space, dreams of freedom and tenderness and fury. It welcomes and celebrates life at every turn, inviting nature as part of its choir of voices. I will have to come back here. This is the kind of record I am grateful for - something I have been hearing about for a long time without getting around to actually listen, and that pushes me out of my comfort zone.
Ephemeral, weird but overall deeply interesting and enjoyable
Wow! Never heard this album, nor this artist or any of their music. Incredible that this came out when it did, instantly added to my library.
Good of course. Like no other music.
Cant play this album without thinking about Cincinnati in 2006. First Internship with My uncle Mark and grandfather. Living on liberty hill for the summer with Drew David and John. Definitely one of the most fun summers of my life.
Holy shit this is awesome!!! It sounds like I’ve always imagined cocaine feels.
have listened to this album so many times
Your favorite has been rendered irrelevant within the first 5 minutes of this album, and your girlfriend got salmonella, now DANCE! bitch...
Supergenial! Und das zu der Zeit!!!!
Loved it
I heard about this album in high school when I was obsessed with a lot of the Elephant 6 bands (for many of whom this is a direct inspiration). I mean, it's an absolutely classic psychedelic rock album in my book, more joyful than The Doors and more obtuse than Sgt. Pepper's. It's a 5 for me even though I rarely listen to it any more, listening to it again today was a joy. Probably aught to listen to it more.
ahead of its time is the first thought i can give this album. seriously, with some of the processed effects i'm hearing... this was the 1960s! it's very surprising. an interesting amalgamation of tropical and surreal, blending all sorts of genre influences from north america, south america and europe. brilliantly odd. a treat of an album.
This is a great example of why I’m doing this. I’d heard of Os Mutantes, and maybe heard a track or two, but didn’t know anything about them. So glad this popped up. I really loved this album. I love that you didn’t really know what sound would pop up next, but it was always fun. I will be definitely be listening again!
Os Mutantes are a brilliant psychedelic band from Brazil. Their self-titled album is a collection of fun, experimental songs that garnered world-wide attention. They embraced elements of American and British psychedelia - distortion, feedback, and a range of instruments and styles. The result is very entertaining, and a great example of the experimental music that arose our of sixties psychedelia.
Awesome
Fantastic
Ufffff una joya escondida!!!!
It's a weird mix of Brazilian folklore, acid pop and musique concrète, but I love it! Sure going for Os Mutantes' later albums
I've come across this album before in other charts and of course "A Minha Menina" is a classic in any genre. Generally I've always liked any music from Brazil (from Astrud, through Mutantes even to Sepultura) and this album has a real ambience to it.
this was a very interesting album. Not something I would listen to often or probably again. Remind me a bit of the Zappa.
This was a wild experience definitely a new fav especially fucked up.
10/10 some of the coolest psych-rock I’ve ever heard
Really cool album.
Ahh this is so much fun and so timeless! Faves: A Minha Menina, Adeus Maria Fulo
Os Mutantes are a giant swole doge, looming over the whimpering lil cheems doge of US & UK psychedelic bands - they sound so much more vital and experimental than most bands in this space! Fave tracks - love their versions of "A Minha Menina", "Baby", and "Le premier bonheur du jour". Also really like "Panis et Circenses" and "Trem Fantasma"!
Opinionated and weird. Love the energy. This band set out to make a thing, and they definitely made a thing.
Another brilliant Brazilian album that I didn’t know that I needed in my life…but I definitely do!
Really fun!
Very cool band
I loved that slab of weird. Even through all the weird it still grooves and is easily accessible
Brilliant
you have to get used to the sound but it's a great album... this is why I am confident to finish all these albums because with every 10 boring or mid albums there is one great new find
Highly experimental psychedelic record with plenty of hooks and sick riffs and other cool tricks that'll keep you coming back. There's no end to it's inventiveness. And honestly, the only albums I can think of that match it is stuff like the United States of America s/t, but this executes their ideas and is much more accessible. Whimsical at times, dreamy in others, uses musique concrete to blow away audiences with sudden yet smooth transitions within songs themselves. A landmark of the tropicalia movement that got me into exploring all sorts of Brazilian rock. Every track is memorable and leaves an impression with their own quirks that make every second of every song a fun time. I have tripped to this before, and I'm guaranteed to do it again.
Man, I was psyched to see this one show up today. Twenty years ago, I heard Bat Macumba on one of the Nuggets compilations, and it was such a standout track, I had to go find more by these guys. Eternally glad I did. I just love their joyful, chaotic psychedelic madness. Great songwriting, creative and fun arrangements, nice harmonies. I love the crazy left turns these songs take. Great stuff. All Os Mutantes albums are great.
This was a surprise treat! Brazilian psychedelic rock with bossa nova influences. This hit the spot in a way I wasn’t expecting.
Loved it. Sounds fresh compared to the constant flow of British rock this project has been feeding me.
I've been a fan of this album for a long time. Amazing tropicalia psychedlic album. Super fun and catchy. 5/5. Standout Tracks: Panis Et Circenses, A Minha Menina, Adeus Maria Fulô, Baby, Bat Macumba, Trem Fantasma, Tempo No Tempo, Ave Gengis Khan
the Beatles Brazilian cousins took me on a journey that has changed me forever. I loved it so much
Loved this. Some of the instrumentals made me think of the weirder end of the beach boys.
BR!
This is one of the essential pieces of Brazilian music, and I cannot give it less than five stars. All the influences from psychedelic rock and Brazilian traditional rhythms like samba are here, making an impressive album with a lot of poetry in its lyrics. I love this album!
I'm a sucker for Latin music. I'm a sucker for psychedelic rock too. I'm also a sucker for weird experimental stuffs I haven't heard before. This is literally a treat.
A fantastic and surprising good with lot of personality and a good mont of crust
Love, love, love Os Mutantes. I'm big fan of psychedelic rock in general, but they are probably my favorite psychedelic group of all. They are both more experimental and more fun than most other psychedelic bands. They have a very unique and diverse sound that manages to escape many of the cliches of psychedelia, while feeling more like a real trip. Almost surreal at times. Love the variety of their instrumentation, and their use of the studio to collage everything together.
Classic. Havent listened to this in a long time
Being in Portuguese I didn’t understand the lyrics. But if they are half was decent this is the best psychedelic rock record I’ve heard.
Really fun and unique album.
5/5. Musically innovative and wild and very ambitious for its time. Couldn’t ask for more 👍
OBRA PRIMA PORRA
Maravilhoso!!!
A pretty awesome album. Breath of fresh air. Pretty sure they are singing in Portuguese, so that’s cool. And the instrumentation is everything
świetny album, im dłużej go słuchałem to coraz bardziej mi się podobał, super brzmienie, bardzo ciekawe instrumentarium, wpadające w ucho melodie, nietuzinkowe wokale i oryginalna zabawa muzyką, na pewno będe do niego wracał. Baby, senhor F i le premier bonheur du jour chyba moje ulubione tracki
Chingón.
Loved it. listened to it......then immediately listened to it again
This is great! Really enjoyed it, would like to have it on while sipping a beer in the hammock
Fun and funky!
Fantástico, produção incrível, especialmente pra época. Uma mistura de rock, psicodelia, pop, lirismo... PROG excelente
Always look forward to the world music albums, and it’s another good one. And we’re on a low fi, DIY homegirls kick. Os Mutantes is some wacky Brazilian psychedelia, but it was a fun, all over the place listen that worked for me. Anything goes in the sixties. (3.86*s) Would have been even better if I had heard this one back in the day…
I'm always in for a psychedelic, foreign fling. Os Mutantes delivers just that. Dig the fast horns, random trippy theatrics and sound effects. So many instruments and weird sounds...it's all over the place which is what makes this album stand out. Great us of xylophone on "Adeus Maria Fulo" and radio voice on "Senior F." Some sort of zipper piccolo and a ray gun guitar on Bat Macumba? I love it...could be top track. The slow songs with female lead aren't as strong but breaks up the chaos. Add this weird one to the stack with the works of Pere Ubu and Small Faces. 3.63 stars go to these mutants. Nice one list!
Just after the boring "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", this list actually gave me some really fun psychedelic music, coming from no other place than Brazil. Really being loving the picks from the country. As part of the Tropicália genre, this album mixes psychedelic rock elements, like experimenting with sounds, very distorted electric guitars, catchy choruses, weird lyrics and a lot of transitions between and in the songs, with some very infectious rhythms and grooves belonging to the Brazilian music culture, that makes the album feel so full of life, uplifting and that characterizes this style of music. I specially liked the songs "Paris et circenses", "A Minha Menina", "Bat Macumba" and "Trem Fantasma". Energy is not all that there is, as there are some slow, delicate and sweet moments, those being "O Relógio" and "Le permier bonheur du jour", even though some quiet moments can also be found in specific parts of other songs, but not explored as much as in these two pieces. The thing that bothers me the most about this record is the heavy clipping, as a result of the limitations of the technology of that time. I honestly think this would benefit a ton from a much cleaner sound. Other than that, I think it is a very fun record. Not the best I've heard coming from Brazil, but still proves that this place has being overlooked and that it is slowly gaining the attention it deserves (at least from my part).
This kind of pleasant surprise is one of my favourite things about this website. I probably never would have listened to this album had I not signed up, but I’m really glad I did. To this British listener it has a highly distinctive sound, combining influences from British and American psychedelic rock with Brazilian instrumentation. It’s a strange and experimental but still melodic and musically diverse album; tracks often feature multiple, very different sections, tempo changes, weird tape effects, odd sounds and instruments, and so on. I can’t say if the lyrics are any good, but the music was fantastic.
I loved this album, it's weird, it kind of has a summer vibes, this one is going to be on my playlist for more listenings!
Crucial psych landmark release. So much fun to listen to.
Love how they’re able to blend traditional Brazilian instruments with the rockier style of the album. Also reminded me that the cuica exists and now I want one.
Not nearly as psychedelic as I was expecting from the reviews I read. This is the kind of album I want to experience through this listening journey. It was just a lot of fun. I've no doubt this would be better known and much more popular if it wasn't for the fact they're Brazilian. Definitely be listening again.
vibrant, very 60s album. lots of little quirky sounds like birds chirping, or what sounds like a sniff, or general whooping and hollering. repetitive songs like a lot of 60s stuff. i love Os Mutantes
It makes me feel silly inside.
Brazilian psychedelic rock I can enjoy.
Man, this album was all over the place. Very fun. A lot of the songs were catchy and some rocked pretty hard. I put it on in the car, and when the second song came on, Chelsea was like, this song is in a bunch of commercials. I didn't recognize it. She looked it up and it was prominently featured in a McDonald's ad campaign during the 2008 Olympics. She has a beautiful mind.
I saved this for a summer's day. Tropicalia at its finest.
cool! like brazilian beatles
4.1/5
Much more like it, a psychedelic circus act that is interlaced with squealing guitar slides and a bossa nova heartbeat. Really really enjoyed this and it stands shoulders above the last couple of albums I have listened to just by its sense of adventure. Only a 4 because no sound from the album is deified in my memory
This is just the kind of thing I’m doing this project for. Love it
International Psychadelia...a fun listen
Yes! This is the kind of album I wanted to discover when I started listening to 1001 albums!
Omg I already listened to The Bees' A Minha Menina cover and the original is wayyyyy better!! This album is SO COOL + intriguing + psychedelic + shroomy tbh. Perfect for summer dozy daysssss with a lil bit of boogie and pizzzazzzzz. Has made me realise how much I like boogie-able music generally. Bat Macumba is sooooo vibes
I didn't know if I *like* this so much as find out fascinating. It's at the interesting of two genres I generally enjoy and did not know ever intersected, and while it's not always successful, it's never dull.
I got into this back when it surfaced as an obvious influence on all those 2005-2013 bands (New Pornographers, of Montreal, Vampire Weekend, and a hundred others) but had totally forgotten about it. I loved revisiting it. Breath of fresh air.
Groovy
weird and wacky and sometimes atonal but hey, i had fun!
Terrific left-field psychedelia
Excellent piece of Brazilian psych rock in the trippy late 60s with a flair of supernatural vibes.
3.5 Trippy ride
Os Mutantes (The Mutants) were participants in the politically-charged musical movement tropicália, which I've interacted with a little bit for this challenge already. the band was featured on Caetano Veloso's first self-titled album in 1968, and Veloso returned the favor by contributing four songs to this, their debut album, which came out a few months later. also making a couple appearances is Gilberto Gil, another prominent tropicália figure; Gil and Veloso co-wrote this album's opener, "Panis et circenses". it's a scathing indictment of the upper classes of Brazilian society living comfortably while the country's military dictatorship made the lives of its less fortunate citizens a living hell. Veloso's album stood out to me for the innocuous way in which it delivered its very pointed political message; the music of Os Mutantes feels like a mirror image of that! this is easily one of the most experimental albums I've yet heard in a genre already known for its experimentalism, certainly far moreso than most of the American and British music they were clearly using as a template. the wide array of instrumentation and the bizarre arrangements, with their detours into dissonance and noise (check out the plucked piano strings at the end of their cover of Françoise Hardy's "Le premier bonheur du jour), come courtesy of avant-garde composer Rogério Duprat. come for the sunny psych melodies, stay for The Weirdness. light 8/10.
The Beach Boys, if the beach is Coco Cabana and the boys are pre-gaming hard while getting ready for carnival
Psychedelia sounds more playful when sung in Portuguese.
I'd heard tell of this albums many times, but never sought it out. Mistake on my part.
Cool shit right here. Quite psychedelic, quite rhythmic, quite hip and in the now for '68 but oh so unique. I'll need time with this to really get to know it and feel it and understand it more. But I'm thrilled upon first listen. I think other albums by this band might be even better.
I never imagined “psychedelic Latin music” to be a thing, but in retrospect it makes perfect sense.
Solid album, takes me back to college days in the dorm!
What a strange, little carnival funhouse of an album! There are lots of surprises and sudden shifts in genre, all of it played with a whimsical, playful air. Psychedelic pop with catchy melodies, a dash of soul, and a distinctly Brazilian flair throughout. This feels like one of those albums that your favorite artists love. It’s a real gem. I love these fuzzed-out guitar parts. So cool. “A Minha Menina” in particular is a highlight.
Criatividade Latina.
I kinda forgot that this wasn't just garage rock but Brazilian, there's a lot more interesting stuff going on in here! Like there's some garage rock, but there's also psych rock and chansons among other things, and it all just sounds so wonderful. I don't know Brazilian music well enough to put my finger on how exactly tropicalia separates itself from standard-issue psych, but I can hear the difference and I love it.
This challenged me, and I kinda loved it. Completely new to me experience and a band I've never heard of before. This was fun and funky and capital-s-Strange.
Weird band. Great band!
No. 139 All over the place in the best way possible
Genre tropicalia. Feedback et instruments nouveaux.
Maybe it's just because I've had a lot of underwhelming albums lately but this batshit bizarre Brazilian psych stuff was at least fun and made me feel something. No idea what it is or why it's here but I'd play it again.
Heltokigt!
Always a bit of trepidation when I see psychedelic rock as a genre, but thought this album was great
All over the place in the best way possible
Took me a few listens to actually get it. I understand its relevance, but maybe it still didn’t really click for me. I’ll definitely revisit this record in the future.

Really enjoyable Brazilian 60s psychedelic pop. Would never have listened without this odyssey.
This was refreshing after way to much classic rock
wow that was quite a trip!! what fun so creative loved it
Sounds like if The Kinks got more experimental and psychedelic. Some good songs here. Definitely worth a few listens, even if mot every song is a winner.
Stands apart from its contemporaries, even outside of not being sung in English. Idiosyncratic, sometimes pretty, sometimes strange. Grab-bag of genres and sounds. This is the actually psychedelic and weird shit the 60s are known for. The distorted guitar work was my favorite part.
My high school Spanish teacher grew up in Guatemala. I remember wearing a Ramones shirt to school one day and she said how much she loved listening to "Los Ramones" growing up - she couldn't understand a word they were saying but she and her friends would sing along with the lyrics anyway. I tell that anecdote to say that I feel like the member of Os Mutantes were the same way with 50s/60s American music. They probably didn't understand all the lyrics but man, you can hear the influence. I couldn't understand anything they were saying, either, but pretty cool music.
Pretty good. Unique. An enjoyable listen.
4/5
creepy Brazilian Beatles , i like it so far lol a minha menina is cutie patootie a lil love song for a girl. also has a sick guitar riff slow danced to baby with my fiancé honestly a super cute album might listen to again
This album kept going interesting places. I am appreciative it is on the list.
Oh wow! I had no idea about this. What a groove! Really experimental, psychedelic and weird but with samba and Jorge Ben and Mamas & Papas. A fever dream.
They're having a party and they've decided you're coming
I would say this stands up with almost anything else of its era. But its a pretty an hipster pick. I dont speak any Portuguese. Hard for me to know anything about this. We live in the same hemisphere I guess. Its just a solid little sorta phych or garage type rock record. Very steeped in the 60s. Its good though. I really liked tempo no tempo and the big one a minha Menina. Those were the standouts but nothing here is bad. If this is your genre im sure you would get alot out of this. Especially if you have spun the classics over and over for decades. Cool little record
Fantastic, fascinating 60s rock from Brazil. Grateful for the experience
Certainly a work outside of the typical for its time, a fun psychedelic journey worthy of respect
++*: A Minha Menina ++: O Relógio, Baby, Senhor F, Bat Macumba, Le premier bonheur du jour, Trem Fantasma, Ave Gengis Khan +: Panis et Circenses, Tempo no Tempo +-: Adeus, Maria Fulô 7,9/10

Really dug this. Bit like a Brazilian Love. Totally groovy.
This was awesome. Really great!
Dope
Passei grande parte do dia a ouvir Os Mutantes. Gostei de todo o seu catálogo.
This was so interesting! Love seeing artists doing this style outside of NA/UK
weird but cool
interesting late 60s psych album. it's pretty rough around the edges, which make it a little difficult to listen to at points. particularly the harmonies here are a chore to listen to sometimes. at the same time, there is a level of charm here that makes it feel like an authentic, grassroots psych album, which makes it a more interesting listen - definitely different than a lot of the big name psych stuff that was coming out at the time. there are some cool sounds explored here. a little loony and goofy. although it definitely is not the acid rock variety of 60s psych, it still has a rougher edge at times than a lot of the other "sunshine" pop psych acts of the time, although i find its sound and style tend to fall more in line with the latter, not the former.
Highlights: A Minha Menina, Adeus, Maria Fulô, Senhor F, Bat Macumba, Ave Gengis Khan Lowlights: --------------------------------------------------------- What a treat. Absolutely insane album. I kept saying this sounds like Crash Bandicoot music over and over again and now I can't get that out of my head.
Not a word was understand. Vibes were phenomenal. Very fun listen
I enjoyed this for the most part, even with the not so subtle Beatle influence. Bat Macumba had too much noise, was over-stimulated. Either way, unique music is why I started this project
This shit rules. Pedals made from sewing machines etc. Rad as.
Trippy, yet groovy at the same time. Overall, a good listen. 4.5 bumped down to 4.
NICE, oprecht nice! 4 sterren. Ik moet even liggen. FAVO: A minha Menina, Bat Macumba, Ave Genghis Khan
Stor 4
Very similar to The Beatles. Feels original.
also good! Hispanic so I didn’t understand but still fire 7/10
enjoyed it a lot surprisingly. In places sounded ahead of its time. Very unusual and a bit off the wall but I liked it
This was weird. In a good way. It's pretty eccentric and cool, and I had fun listening to it. Great range of instruments, cool as hell guitar in places, summery feel... I just wish I knew what they were singing!
Very fun. Album cover goes hard. Favorite track: Panis Et Circenses 3.5/5
Man this is what it’s all about. How would I have ever found this. So strange, so psych, so good. Just such a good version of everything going on in England at the time done by a Brazilian band. Love it.
Oh yea, this was great. So glad it wasn't another bullshit Leonard Cohen or Elvis Costello album. 4/5
Very psychedelic and a very example of the very reason that I started going through this list. I never would have found this without this list.
Wonderful discovery. Will go down this rabbit hole. Rob has plenty more
I get super excited whenever I see that something from here is Brazilian. The Brazilian music I have been exposed to from here is some of the most interesting new discoveries. This is no exception. This album is really great. Super interesting usage of sound and many different textures. It’s very reminiscent of the late 60’s - early 70’s Beach Boys. Favorite songs were A Minha Menina, Baby, Bat Macumba, Trem Fantasma, and Tempo No Tempo.
Erittäin mielenkiintoista settiä. Vaatisi enemmän kuuntelukertoja, jotta pääsisi kunnolla sisään.
Not half bad lol
At last, something actually worth listening to, really refreshing after the pile of utter bollox foisted on me recently
I have heard this whole album and I don't remember why!
I'm here for this! A brilliant blend of bossa nova, psychedelia, dreamy pop, and rock!
The fun they’re having is infectious. Either that, or Ive crossed the experimental music tolerance event horizon after 650+ albums. It’s so crazy that I pulled The Bees record with their cover of “A Minha Menina” just a few days before this one. The original on here is a little better I’d like to think. “Adeus Maria Fulô” & “Senhor F” were also highlights for me. But there’s no excuse to put this thing on and enjoy it in its entirety. It’s short, challenges typical song structure, and is a good time. I’m not sure if I’d enjoy it more or less if I knew what they were saying, but I don’t think that’s the point of this one. 4/5, a psychedelic album that isn’t a classic finally did it
Fun album, pleasantly surprised!
Brazilian Psychadelic 60s rock? What’s not to like?
ya llega la hora de aprovechar
GOOBA GOOBA OS MUTANTES
Os Mutantes are still the champions of the tropicalia movement. The spirit of the 60s was very much alive in Brazil here, despite fierce opposition from supporters of the dictatorship. Unlike the majority of the leftists who supported a return to traditional music, artists like Os Mutantes just wanted to tear everything down, inspired by the breathtaking pace of experimental and psychedelic rock in the West. This album doesn't have the same skill as some of those 1960s giants but it contains the same freedom and ambitious creativity of the era, coupled with a healthy dose of Brazilian sounds. It's weird, wonderful and (in the context of the time it was released) dangerous. It's always a great one to revisit from time to time.
I enjoyed how wacky and whimsical this was. Not like anything I’ve heard before, which was pretty refreshing tbh.
A new one for me and a really interesting listen. These are exactly the kinds of albums I signed up for with this project. Unfortunately, I can count on one hand how many of them I've actually gotten.
Brazilian psych rock, very cool stuff that had a contemporary feel to it.
One of the weirder albums that I really enjoyed. I mean, it's really not that weird, at least not more so than other 60s psychadelic is. But it's not something I would've ever found on my own.
Surprisingly solid, super out there for as old as the record is, high 3
Bizarre, so bizarre. But enjoyable throughout and discovering a Minha Menina is the highlight of this whole exercise
Funky
Listening to so much music seems to have broken my brain or maybe it was Os Mutantes. Either way, my brain is now broken.
At first I thought this was a bad Brazilian take on Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band but it totally grew on me!! Very cool album!!
Maybe not the best album of the genre, but it’s so much fun that it deserves its place among the classic psychedlic albums from the late 60’s
The Brazilian response to The Beatles and the overwhelming psychedelic rock wave that would change the world. Great stuff!
A brazilian classic of psychedelic energy!
Psychedelic and exotic
Lucky for me, I was introduced to this band and album when I was like 20/21 with my now husband playing some songs from this with his psych rock band in all the dirty basements…. Ahhh college
Det her va jo ganske artig
The album Os Mutantes is so great. So many different sounds and variety of vibes included. They're like if The Beatles were Portuguese! Mostly great to listen to, even if I didn't understand a single word.
This started out as a strong three but as the album went on it quickly became a solid 4 for me. Bat Macumba is my favorite song.
This is so noisy and camp and stupid and weird. I love it. My favourite is the slurping noise in baby. What a rich soundscape.
I didn't know that I needed to know about this album, but I really enjoyed it. Sometimes, not knowing the language that an album is written in really helps with enjoying the dynamics of the music, and this was the case here.
I am a lyrics person so many non English music leaves me wanting more but this psychedelic garage rock was good and didn’t know how influential it was until now.
4 ok ok its bop worthy
This album gets better with each listen. It’s definitely a dense 36 minutes, yet it remains a fun listen. The song structures are unorthodox, the performances are quirky, and it is all accented with pieces of noise and distortion. Brilliant.
A lot of fun!!! A Minha Menina song of all time!!!
I love an album that mixes things up and this certainly fits the bill! Nature sounds, different languages, different rhythms- but always moves. High point track for me is Baby- ooh that organ is smooth. Very excited for this new find!
I'll give it an extra point just for being a non-English album on an extremely anglobiased list.
Extremely strange and playful. My only criticism is that sometimes the playfulness becomes tedious. I love the sort of motley, renaissance sound to a lot of this.
This is the kind of stuff I was hoping to discover! Loved it
Way better than I thought. Sounds like if the Beatles were weirder and were from brazil
Weird, wacky and wonderful. Bat Macumba reminded me of something I might hear on a Saturday morning cartoon from the 70's.
8/10
This has all the psychedelic tropes: slowing/speeding up the track, strange noises, and reverb, adding in familiar song sounds (one song screamed “Sunshine Superman” to me). Somehow they did it in a way that really sounds intriguing and controlled.
Good album. Great to see something else here than the usual US/UK-bands.
žešća brija koja zaslužuje četiri, bam
I have a soft spot for Tropicana/Tropical music. Brazil has so much to offer in the 1960s and 1970s in terms of progressive music and surely this album is one of them. Lots of the tunes are known by that excellent complication from Soul Jazz records which gives an excellent album that is coherent in its approach yet surprise you all the time. It's close to a masterpiece. I don't rank it 5 stars because is that certain something missing that makes it stick out so it doesn't fade in the background.
Ciekawe i dziwne. W sumie fajne, ale nie wiem dlaczego. Nawet nie wiem czy śpiewali po portugalsku. Pewnie nie. 4
This is odd. Not bad, not great. It’s like psychedelic glam with sprinkles of Zappa.
An interesting Brazilian band combining Brazilian music with psychedelic. Some interesting music although I have no idea what they are singing about.
A surprisingly interesting listen. I am apparently a fan of 1960’s Brazilian psychedelia.
This was weird but in the best way possible. This is the kind of niche shit that makes this thing here so cool.
Oh fuck yes, Tropicalia is one of those genres that more people desperately need to know about. In terms of world music it’s probably one of the most accessible to an American ear other than like, Italo-disco or K-pop or what ever. Caetano Veloso has an album on here also, but if you dig this album I HIGHLY recommend Gilberto Gil’s 1968 album, for me it’s the peak of this genre.
Is it going on my playlist, probably not, but it was a helluva ride!
Fun and obscure.
Hidden, messy gem. Who knew there was a genre Brazilian psychedelic.
The only song I knew was a minha manina due to the cover by the bees, but the album was brilliant and had such a great energy. The audio was suprising for the age, and I felt it was quite revolutionary in terms od complexity for the age
I did not listen to the whole album, but liked what I heard. Sounded like an album from the 60s in a different language,
Definitely as described.
I was NOT expecting to dig this one because I am so lyrics-focused and so tragically monolingual that it's rare for me to get really into tunes that aren't in English. But this was fun! Jaunty and peppy, with some entertainingly odd sounds in the mix (No idea if the LYRICS are jaunty and peppy. Could be about tubercular cannibals for all I know.)
So fun and unique. I'm sure that a lot of other "psych filtered through other cultures" albums have been lost to time but we're blessed to have this legendary one.
interesantes
Insane in parts. A lot of bits that sound like the spanish Beatles.
The Beatles are the British Os Mutantes
