Reviews (page 5 of 7)

If one were asked what the '60s sounded like in Brasil, one might think something along these lines. Flowery, fun, if not exactly fantastic.

This had 2-3 strikes against it for me back when it was reissued and became a cause célèbre: • The hipsters were all over it • Cmon, the cape? • An allergy to anything foreign prized despite it kinda sounding like mostly local takes on the prevailing trends of the day I’ve still been more a Jorge Ben and Gal Costa kinda guy when it comes to tropicalia but I could see finally changing that up a bit and now that I’ve spent the past year immersed in French at the very least I have a slightly better read on the lyrics. Like, barely, but still.

Never heard of this group. Interesting

Märklig platta och märkligt val att denna ska vara med på den här listan. Det är inte dåligt, bara märkligt.

Brazilian experimental psychedelic. Chaotic, with a lot of crunchy highs, compressed instrumentals and vocals with odd sound effects sprinkled throughout. Cerebral 60s/70s vibe. Could be good in the right headspace (i.e. high on weed or acid) but is definitely not everyday music. Track 5 "Baby" and Track 8 "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour" were standout songs for me.

Pretty good melodies, would listen again. Nothing outstanding

“Ave Genghis Khan” is a psychedelic banger from 60s-70s Brazilian rockers. Os Mutantes should have used prominent organs on every track. “Bat Macumba” is a decent track. The rest is so-so Brazilian psychedelia in Portuguese. 3.3 stars rounded down.

Very interesting.

It's things like this that is why I wanted to do this project - there's no way I'd have been listening to a 60s Brazilian rock band without it. This was weird, and when it stayed the right side of the weirdnesses line, I really enjoyed it. The Mamas & The Papas cover was great and got downloaded as a result, but I liked a lot of the original songs too. Sometimes the desire to add a completely tuneless solo of some description completely lost me though. If there is ever a South American equivalent of Austin Powers, something from Os Mutantes should definitely make the soundtrack. 3/5

Thought this would be another boring 60s psych rock album, but this was pretty fun. Can really feel the influence the guitar tone on this album had over Jack White’s whole sound. Some fantastic fuzz for an album from 1968.

Panis Et Circenses and Baby were the most accessible tracks.

It’s not bad, but I doubt I’ll ever return to it. Lots of Scooby Doo energy though.

Interesting

This was an interesting one. I wasn’t very impressed by how it started, but I felt like the songs got better as the album went on. Baby was the first one I perked up a little on, and then Bat Macumba kinda slapped. I also really liked Trem Fantasma and Tempo No Tempo. Lots of unique and quirky sounds swirled this into a fun collection of tunes. 3.5 but didn’t quite reach 4 territory for me.

Banebrydende indenfor psykedelisk rock og avavantgarde. Tropicalia genre movement var de en stor del af. Meget innovativt

Delightfully weird. Could see this growing on me. 3.5/5

Strange and enjoyable.

I think if I had discovered this during one of the late-adolescent periods when I was listening to After Bathing at Baxter's, I would have thought I had found the grail. Now it just doesn't have enough structure to keep my attention for very long, though I really liked some passages (and later tracks that Spotify pulled up after the album was done).

I had no idea Brazilian psychedelia was a thing, and I had never heard of the Tropicalia movement. Very interesting...and I admire any artists working under a fascist regime.

Even though I have no idea what they're saying, this psychedelic rock band can jam. Interesting use of traditional Brazilian instruments to make catchy beats. Enjoyable to an extent.

Fuzzy and young

This is that unusual, crazy, but weirdly wonderful stuff that we are after from this isn't it?

Gifted musicians. Sounds like Psychedelic Beatles, but sung in Brazilian Portuguese

Yeah that's pretty fun! A lot of Tropicalia brass give it a New Orleans Jazz vibe sometimes, with 60s guitars layered on. But apart from A Minha Menina, not a ton of memorable tracks. Ultimately, a good listen, probably a great example of what it is, not my style.

This was fun. Will I listen to again: 33%

listened to this at work… i think in a different setting, i would give it a four. 3.5

This is so far up the weird shit psychedelic river I am completely lost. Being cold sober I have No idea if I like it or it’s so shit can’t even listen to it, think it helps being in Portuguese so I understand even less. But whatever it was a listen, even if they had to play every sound they could find, yeah and glad I got to hear it, so should be on the list, but still not sure if for good or bad. Gonna go with 3 star cause I really have no idea.

Interesting psychedelic Brazilian rock

I love the vibe of this album. Its weird, funky, experimental, free-wheeling, but maybe all those things slightly to a fault. The first few tracks are engaging, but admittedly most of the good tracks here were written by some other MPB legends - Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, Cateano Veloso namely. "Baby" is iconic but this is definitely not the best version I've heard of it, not even the best version by Os Mutantes (1971 for me). Fave Tracks: Panis et circenses, Baby 3.4/5

Well, that happened. I'm not exactly sure what it was, but it definitely happened.

Relaxing

I really dig this album a lot

it was a cool album to listen to but nothing super stood out to me as a certified banger yknow

this was an adventurous listen as psychedelic albums tend to be. liked some songs, didn’t care much for others. a mixed bag, really.

Honestly very interesting Brazilian pop album, and I'm not entirely sure what to feel about it right now, but I think I need a few more listens to take it in

This is like an attempt at a Psychedelic Brazilian Beatles. It's not a great one either.

I can appreciate the artistry and vibe... but not my thang.

I don’t know that I’ll ever get the appeal of intentionally discordant, weird, or atonal music. Luckily those elements aren’t the totality of this album. The rest—the Portuguese beats, language and drumming—is enjoyable enough.

= The Beatles It's interesting, I'll give it that

This shit was weird…but I think I liked it. Baby was a legit “oh shit that song!” moment. And that alone has me rounding up. 2.75/5

Pretty cool. Psychedelic Latin garage rock.

Super fun. I had a good time and listened to more beyond this album.

The only album of the 60s that sounds like people from the 90s imagined albums of the 60s sounded. Crazy and light and good-natured fun.

Thoughts before listening: Psychedelic Brazilian rock music from the 60s I believe. One of those bands I have read about but never listened to so I am excited to hear what they are all about. Review: This certainly lives up to its psychedelic billing. Like with a lot of the 60s bands on this list, this album is a mixture of melodic pop rock ditties and weirder sounds that put it squarely in the psychedelic category. This album is enjoyable and presents a very interesting mix of styles although the language barrier is admittedly a bit of a hurdle for me. 3-stars

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I enjoyed this as a psychedelic type album more than that guff the Beatles farted out. Maybe because I don't speak Portuguese, it was like listening to an album as a Sims character.. no idea what was happening but I was alright with the quirkiness of most of it. I imagine this is the sort of music that played through Jose Aldo's head when Conor McGregor knocked his dick loose all those years ago. A respectable 3 from me.

Interesting

How do you say “ok” in Portuguese

This is raw and unpredictable. It’s all over the place. Not everything works, but when it clicks, it’s ok.

I have mixed feelings. Some of it is really good. They combine styles I like. Garage rock and more traditional Brazilian music. More energetic than some other tropicalia artists. But it sounds as if it's covered in a thick layer of dust. It's hard to listen to. Favorite song: A Minha Menina.

Nikad mi ovo nije skroz leglo

Might need to relisten, but unfortunately I won't

This was one of the few albums that I didn’t check the Wikipedia before listening. I enjoyed playing guess the bands origin. I was correct in saying Portuguese/brazilian. The music itself was unique but quite weird.

Ah. This again. I remember encountering this album when I assembled a "Best 50 LPs of 1968" for a birthday boy. At the time, I listened to them all, and this one stood out as being...well.... Tokenism. There were FAR better albums than this, but I guess the critics felt better including some Brazilian Folky-Psychedelia. Listening again, I have the same view. Meandering and unfocussed.

Don’t understand lyrics, so can’t speak to that. The sound is unique but not super interesting

Sounds cool

Well that was fun and quirky. But got to be a bit hard work by the end.

Only previously familiar with A Minha Menina. Bonkers baroque trippy mod pop exotica. Starts strong, gets old fairly quick. Like it quite a bit.

Brazilian psych rock could grow on me but it needs time

this album was kinda wacky, and i think that is the best way to describe it. i did enjoy it by the end, but it was a bit rough getting into. Ave Genghis Khan won me over though and I could give it another listen.

Maybe because the last couple of albums haven’t been great, but I am glad to have listened to this album. Kinda reminds me of some of the instrumental music on Joe vs the Volcano. Fun! Low 3.

This is more in line with what I expect with albums I should listen to before I die. Something I probably wouldn’t have ever come across, let alone listen to. Intriguing throughout, lots of different styles and genres represented, and the composition kept me invested while dealing with the language barrier. Glad I listened to it, happy to add a couple songs into my library.

Yo, I can fucks with this! This album could have easily been another 'It's so out there that we have to put it on the list' kind of album, but's it's actually pretty good. I really liked the first few songs, and I went back and listened to "Panis Et Circenses" three times. The back half kinda drags, and it loses it's unique appeal after 30 minutes though. At the start of the album I was thinking 4 stars, but I think it drops to a 3 by the end. Maybe it gets a bonus star for being unique. We'll see in the morning.

This is something very random... While listening some songs, I thought my mind was leaving me. :D And after that was happening, the album slowly started growing on me, so I kinda enjoyed it?! I still don't know... :D But probably I won't be listening to this band that much ether.

Os Mutantes is bursting with ideas, colours, and playful experimentation, and at first that energy is infectious. It feels mischievous and inventive, gleefully throwing sounds, styles, and studio tricks into the mix without much concern for restraint. There is a charm to that looseness, especially in how fearlessly it bends pop, psychedelia, and Brazilian music into something proudly strange. For me, though, that constant novelty becomes tiring over the course of the album. Songs rarely settle long enough to fully land before pivoting into the next idea, and what initially feels exciting can start to feel scattershot. The humour and theatricality do not always translate emotionally, and after a while it becomes harder to connect beyond appreciating the creativity on display. I admire what it is doing more than I actually enjoy listening to it front to back. In the end, Os Mutantes feels like an important and fascinating record rather than a deeply satisfying one. I am glad it exists, and I like dipping into it, but it does not pull me back repeatedly or linger in my head once it is over.

Didn't really give a hoot one way or another but has a few little clever bops and kinda catchy even though not my jam

Os Mutantes The first song is good. It reminds me of the chaos in Sergeant Peppers. O Relógio is insane. I love the reverb on the vocals and the dreamlike atmosphere. Same with Le Priemer Bonheur Du Jour. It’s almost as if it matches the colors and visuals on the album cover. It’s mysterious, eerie, and haunting. The distorted piano section near the end is the cherry on top. The ending was great too. Ok this was a solid play. I wouldn’t buy it on vinyl but I like the ideas they played with. It felt very 60s and trippy so that was cool. I really just liked the five songs and not much else

Unfortunately my tolerance for late 60's psych is very low now. This was more fun then many of the other examples on this list but way behind the Hendrix gold standard so not sure what the point is.

Certainly some interesting sounds and quite a good listen. Have saved a couple of tracks to listen to again.

Some weird stuff going on. Catchy in places and certainly interesting throughout. Top track: A Minha Menina

I’ve listened to this before off the back of The Bee’s cover of ‘Minha..’. which is pretty true to the original. And that’s pretty much the only attraction of this album. It gets slightly more understandable after a couple of listens, but mostly it’s a big mess of ideas, of which some tracks have something interesting about them, but also nothing that’s really gonna draw you back in. Generous 3, just because it’s experimental and there should be more stuff like this on the list.

I like it

Cool wee band. Love that “A Minha Menina”

Like other reviewers, one of the reasons I signed up is to come across albums like this. Can't say would necessarily come back to it, but I am glad to know that it exists, and that I have given it a few 'spins'

Influencial and important in context (and I happen to like it) but I'm not sure it is an essential album to hear, in 2024. 2.5 stars if it was available.

An interesting album, I liked Tempo no Tempo.

This was pretty cool actually.

It was ok

Not a fan of the Spanish/Mexican languages but the music and vocal deliveries are very good! Some songs have that late 60s psychadelic vibe and carry it very well.

A rather lovely little potter through the peculiar alleyways of Brazilian psych- and baroque-pop. At times, one is minded entirely of the patchouli-powered garden of delights that was English psych; however, every now and again a twisted version of the Jorge Ben Jor samba formula pushes through. The whole shebang is too dated for me to thoroughly enjoy it - which is hardly the fault of Os Mutantes for merely existing in the late 1960s - but I can dig it, maaaaan.

Highlight: A Minha Menina In a nutshell: weird- but in a good way- psych rock Overall: 5/10

That was kind of cool. More enjoyable than Sgt Peppers, that's for sure

This was way better than I expected.

Overly weird and psychedelic at times, but at other times there’s some decent 60s jangly folk pop?

This was fun to engage with. The mix of psychedelica with traditional Portuguese music is a combo I hadn’t considered before.

3.5/5. Pretty good. I'll have to keep an eye out for more Brazilian psych

Brazil, 60s, tropicalia, psychedelia; mix it up and what do you get? Something a lot like this: dreamier and trippier than a night on the acid, with unexpected treats appearing here, there and everywhere. Occasionally discordant as their creativity exceeds their execution, but always charming, beguiling and enticing. You might need a little, er, chemical help to get fully into it, but it will reward you. It gets a 3 from me, but only because my stash is nearly empty.

Carefree psychedelic carnival music that takes hairpin turns. One minute you’re partying, and the next nothing. Wait. What happened? Where’d the party go? Nowhere. It’s right here, just evolved. Try to keep up.

The first thing I noticed with this record in track one is that they are not very tight. I don't know if it's on purpose but they are definitely not in sync and it's kind of bothering me haha. Wow it's so weird and psychedelic which I am a big fan of. Lots of unexpected things happening. Overall this was more enjoyable than I first expected. I think they did a good job copying the psych sounds of the time.

Pretty cool and unique! I'm certain I'll never return to re-listen to this, but I liked the different influences and how they played with genres.

Recognised one of these from adverts

not high enough for this

interesantno

76% Best: A Minha Menina; Adeus Maria Fulô; Bat Macumba; Ave Gengis Khan Must-Hear? Not quite

This one was all over the place for me. Loved the psychedelia aspects of it but some was just alright.

Well this was weird, but in a good way. I'm surprised that this album isn't more well known. That said I really don't think I would ever listen to this again so I'm not going to rate it super highly.

Not bad if you like that kind of thing

Not in the right headspace for this

Hell yea Brazilian stoner rock

Easy listening.

Pink Floyd in a different language lol.

Not sure about this, Minha song is a classic though

I'm always happy to get an album from somewhere other than the US and UK. I see that Caetano Veloso wrote some of these songs, and I know that name because I got an album from him not too long ago. I also recognized the song "A Minha Menina" as it's on Sunshine Hit Me by The Bees, another album from this list. It's really cool being able to recognize things like that now that I'm almost 800 albums deep! Liked but didn't love this music.

Uneven, but some good stuff. I like "Le premier bonheur du jour," not just because it's actually in a language I can understand, but for the almost Renaissance harmonies and melodies of it. "Tempo no Tempo" has a fun patter-song quality to it, too. Maybe I just like their covers?

Alrighty another artist I've never heard! This was a wacky, experimental, psychedelic album. Lots of strange sounds, "found object" type stuff. Felt very 1968 for sure, with a Brazilian flare. Gave me Silver Apples vibes, a little Yellow Submarine. Loved the Mamas and Papas cover. Not for everyone, but I would listen again. 3.3/5

I had hopes for this when reading about it, and some of it was kinda cute and quirky, but no need to listen to again. 2.5 rounded up to 3 for a cover of “Baby” a fave track of mine from Bebel Gilberto.

Goofy, psychedelic, Brazilian 60’s rock. Interesting and kinda fun.

This was pretty interesting. Never heard of the tropicalia movement before, and I'm not really sure if I would say I'm a fan, but it made for an intriguing listen for sure. I probably wouldn't play this again often, but I would be curious to try it at least once more in the near future.

Just ok. Listened to this already for another list. 2.5/5

Interesting!

On hearing the first few seconds, I thought I was going to hate this, but it wasn't too bad. I liked many of the songs individually but, as an album, it doesn't really hang together, the changes in style from track to track and sometimes within the same track can become quite jarring. A Minha Menina is a good song as are Bat Macumba and Ave Gengis Khan, but overall, the album is weaker than the sum of its parts.

Brazilian psychedelia from the 60s, pretty unique but not something I can imagine listening to of my own accord

Love the album cover, I wonder if this was an inspiration for Big Suit David Byrne / Kermit. Totally within the bounds of late 60's psychedelia with the Brazilian twist. Almost hard to remember that they're singing in a different language sometimes. A unique blend of genres done well.

Bloody good album by all accounts

This is one of the more surprisingly fun international albums on the list. It's funky. And groovy. And trippy. And it grows on you the more you listen to it. So many influences from the 60s all blended together with some very unique production sounds. I just wish I knew the language so I could croon along in Portuguese!

kinda cool, definitely interesting

Started listening as I drink my morning caffeine fix. Is that a tambourine in the opening song? Do I hate that part? Maybe yes. I vaguely recall some pundits during the Bush or Trump years wishing for "great protest music" as an upside lol. What "great protest music" has America created in the past 8 years or even in the last 20? The Tropicalia movement emerges in response to a pro-democracy removal of Brazil's president...and this band gets involved. Who backed this pro-democracy removal and the following decades of prosperity? You are welcome Brazil.

This was an interesting album; this is real psychedelic rock instead of something inspired by it. It’s cool that it’s in Portuguese, and you can hear some of the more Brazilian string and percussion instruments in the interludes between tracks and in the sound tricks that are played in production. This must’ve sounded insane at the time. My father in law has a great collection of Brazilian music including plenty from this time, and it doesn’t sound like anything else. I don’t know the exact timelines but it reminds me of the Beatles more out there stuff, just more raw and excited. The last track is the most “traditional” sounding one and even then it’s still very much their own sound. Anyway I liked it; not sure I would play it again but it was fun to listen to and was for sure groundbreaking in South America if not elsewhere.

Professor Snape in the background is giving me the heebie-jeebies. These are weird songs. I never listened to any psychedelic rock let alone in Portuguese. It kept my interest enough to have me finish the album, but I will 100% never listen to this again unless I direct the Brazilian adaptation of Midsommer. That said it's not bad.

Very cheerful. Clearly made in a simpler more carefree time.

Weird little album that I’m glad was on here. Very creepy but also psychedelic. A strange brew.

Interesting album. I kind of liked the weird, 60s psychedelia of this one—even though it was all in Portuguese. There’s some nice songs here. ***

Not my bag baby.

fun and weird!

Fun album to listen too, definitely can tell it’s an album of the late 60’s. Enjoyed the foreign language vocals.

Interesting enough so it was worth the listen. But nothing really to keep me listending (not understanding Portuguese didnt help!)

Ja. In Ordnung.

Baby Senhor F Tempo no tempo Ils sont chelou ces brésiliens. Sympa, giga chelou

Weird and fun

Off kilter pop, I guess

Mutantatious. Prog-psychedelic-Brazilian. I felt liberating joy and latent political discord. 'Enter The Void' bounding sonic transcendent mobility. Tão legal.

Quite liked it. Very varied, so the weirder moment never lingered.

This was a fever dream LOL. I enjoyed some of the songs and sometimes their voices. I definitely liked "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour" and there were a couple of others, but then some of them were just chaos.

weirdly this band keeps coming up for me? the word on everybody's lips is os mutantes? anyway it was enjoyable and i'll probably return to it for background listening at some point

ég hafði af þessu nokkuð gaman. önnur umferð! 3,5

Some cool instrument choices, and a psychedelic sound that goes beyond the usual mountains of reverb and legato delivery. Wish I could understand the lyrics!

tudo não bem

A lot of this sounded the same but he has a very soothing voice.

Oh, you’re a trippy bunch. Not my thing, but cool.

Not really sure what it was, but had some catchy stuff, some head scratching stuff. Was interesting reading about the other artists who claimed they were influenced by the group.

Very psychedelic, very tropical, but not really my thing.

You have to be drunk to like it because I have a feeling it's mangled English (yes, I know it's Brazilian). Didn't make it to 5 so 3/5

It took me about 3 songs to realize this was in portuguese and not spanish. A little to psych for me

Not sure what I was in for, but this was actually quite OK. I did know the second song.

Rock psicodélico brasilero! Me gustó la verdad...

This did not do it for me I’m afraid. A bit bonkers

Not something I'll probably put on again, but this is the kind of album that makes this project dun.

What the hell did I just listen to! Nobody could say that was boring that’s for sure. I don’t know that I would seek it out again. And this list has entirely too much psychedelic music. But that was certainly worth listening to

This sounds oddly familiar, kind of like the Turtles, but Brazilian. It was interesting, not bad, but psychedelic rock just isn’t my bag, man. Can you dig it?

Profoundly weird, but also kind of fun. Wears its influences on its sleeve

It sits between too silly and damn good.

Olé! Very 60s. Fun.

This album was fun right from the first few notes. Instantly upbeat. I liked it. 3.5 stars.

It was very different.

Definitely interesting but I don't love it as much as I want to

Wtf is this lol

favourite song: bat macumba

I'm not quite sure what I just listened to. Didn't understand a lick of it since I don't speak a word of Portuguese, however it was pretty fun and enjoyable. I'm not really sure if I would like it more or less if I could understand what they were saying. I did like the mashup feel to it, made it interesting and gave it nice variety. The cover was super wonky, the guy in the back looks really stupid ngl, while the guy in the front looks totally stoned, which is kinda amusing. This whole album was kinda amusing, much better than Cohen.

not really into psychadelic music but this was fine

Had wel iets maar weet niet wat

I have no idea what they’re saying, and it’s all very weird. But I’m not entirely opposed to it.

Now this is a very interesting album! After one listen, there is so much going on, it's too much to take in straight away. That normally is a good thing, and in this case I think it is. It will hopefully get another listen soon as there was a few promising tracks - the second ans the last especially. It gets a mid 3 at the moment.

Truly never heard of this artist. right off the bat, this shit is as psychedelic as it gets. wow. Just reading they are Brazilian which makes sense for the many instrumentation happening. Very interesting music. Gives me a Sgt Pepper's vibe with a The Birds mixed in.

Groovy and fun. The breakdown on the first track surprised me and sounded super modern for an album from 1968.

A mina menina top, ma sono sicuro di averla già ascoltata

Du psychédélique brésilien! Belle découverte et je savais pas que c'était dans le top 40 stoner albums(!).

Nice listen

An interesting mix of sounds although old fashioned

Interesting sounds. Some dynamic, inventive tunes given the era it was produced. I just wish I knew what they were singng about.

bit weird but enjoyable

An interesting album, that was completely unhelped by poor audio quality. Low fidelity, when not by design, never sounds good, masking the nuances that would make some songs extremely interesting. Low-fi when used in modern music plays on that and uses it to it's advantage by making song structures purposefully non-complex, which was not the case here. It was hard to get past that. Not really much worth keeping, but I can appreciate that at the time this must have been mind-blowing to hear. 2.5*

the beach boys brasileros

Interesante, nunca había escuchado bandas de rock psicodélicas en portugués

Sixties silliness

It’s fine I guess

Clearly influential.

Melodic and weird. So many layers of sound. Experimental at its best. Still, I would put this on repeat.

Well that was a trip that I didn’t hate. You can hear influences of Brit pop, rockabilly, and swing bands all mixed a Latin twist. On an unrelated note there is a “slurping” noise throughout that sounds exactly like my 2 yr old asking for a drink and it triggered a Pavlovian response from me to constantly reach for my water bottle. Do with that info what you will.

Treads the line between good weird and too weird

Eclectic and trippy and more than a little self-indulgent and silly. Very much of its time, but fun in its way. One thing listening to an album like this does is reveal just how audacious a lot of music at that time was, regardless of where it was made. I appreciate this album for all those things, but I'm unlikely to listen to it all the way through again. Fave Songs: Baby; Le premier bonheur du jour; Tempo no Tempo; Adeus, Maria Fulô; Ave Gengis Khan; Bat Macumba

Fun stuff. A bit too out there at times but i enjoyed it overall

A pretty good album, certainly for it's time. A number of tracks stood out. Some were unexciting. All in all I'd give this a 2.7 rounded. 3/5.

fine, a little avant garde for me

Easy listening.

the Beatles if they were Brazilian. Disfrutable, me gustó.

Interesting and fun album to listen to Standout songs: A Minha Menina Bat Macumba Ave Ghengis Khan

I wish I liked this more, you had me at Psychadelic rock from Brazil but lost me. Still glad to have heard this though!

Well, that was a trip. Os Mutantes is definitely the “retro kitsch” kind of music that would have played at east village clubs and bars back when that was my scene in the 80s. Unless you are experiencing it with the aid of some kind of mind altering substance, it’s really not the kind of music to just sit and listen to. Some good vocals, instrumentation and a serious nod to Brazilian tropicalia. I give it a solid 3 stars for its creativity and effort.

3/5. Very psychedelic but oddly entertaining. The instrumentation is fun and has Latin and salsa influences despite taking heavily from Psychedelia. I don't quite understand the lyrics, because I don't speak Spanish, and the skill isn't all there, but it fits the music very well, leading me along a guided head trip. This was an enjoyable listen and I might play it again to freak my friends out lol

Enjoyed this much more than The Kinks

an interesting album that ultimately falls flat for me personally. but, in the context of the time i could see myself really digging them maybe with a few more listens? they're not too dissimilar to bands i'm familiar with and love from this era of alt/experimental rock

Huh. I had no idea Brazil had psychedelic bands in the 1960’s that were contemporaries of The Beatles and Pink Floyd. I heard a lot of the former’s “Sgt. Pepper” and the latter’s “Piper at the Gates of Dawn” here. There’s crowd noise at the beginning of the last track. There’s a trumpet part that reminded me a lot of “Penny Lane” (not on “Sgt. Pepper,” I know, but same era). It’s definitely a trip. Some real fun grooves here. Some of it lands, some of it doesn’t. It’s playful, it’s experimental, it pushes boundaries. It’s psychedelic, after all. I liked it, not sure I’d seek it out again. Maybe. I dunno. But it was good and I’m glad I listened. And I didn’t understand hardly a word of it. Standout tracks: A Minha Menina, Adeus Maria Fulô, Bat Macumba, Trem Fantasma, Ave Gengis Khan

i would actually like to revisit this one for its immaculate vibes

Ja interessant

Rating: 7/10 Very good album overall. Really enjoyed the folk elements and experimental nature throughout. The singing was mostly very good as well, a lot of the album had a nice vibe to it and was therefore very pleasant to listen to. The instrumentation was definitely a highlight, a lot of different instruments used in unconventional ways. The album all sounds relatively similar though and some ideas did not resonate with me. Favorite songs: Panis Et Circenses, A Minha Menina, O Relogio, Baby, Bat Macumba, Trem Fantasma. Worst song: Adeus Maria Fulo.

Weird in all the right ways. 3

Feels like quota filling, how is this notable for anything other than being mental brazilian physchedila rather than british or west coast trippy bollocks Fun but also proper fucking mental

Some Tropicália from Brazil! In the late 60's, a psychedelic movement had begun in São Paulo which blended elements from psychedelic rock and pop with Brazilian pop music. Os Mutantes were a key part of this movement, utilizing a number of unique production techniques to give them a unique psychedelic sound. A lot of interesting songs on this record, but I am not a huge psych fan so my mileage is low.

If the Beatles were American-Brazilian. Fun listen. It's a pretty live recording that shows in trickier sections, but that adds to the charm. Many tracks sounded like they came from completely different bands and some of the guitar tones were just annoying to listen to for an entire song. I swear one of the song's guitar tracks sounds like a corrupted file. Adeus Maria Fulô, Tempo No Tempo, Trem Fantasma, and the cover of Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour were stand outs for me. Would listen again.

Was pretty interesting

Not a bad late-60s psychedelic rock album from Brazil. There were a couple of songs that I really enjoyed, but overall the album was very interesting. I would recommend to listeners of the genre. Favorite Song(s): "Panis Et Circenses", "A Minha Menina", "Baby"

Quirky, upbeat and entertaining, a fun record.

Enjoyable enough World music Easy 3

The whole album had like one good song. Its not a "bad" album, but its not a "good" album. I'm also at a loss to explain why anyone would say that it deserves to be on a list of albums you must hear before you die. 3/5

I won’t lie, with the amount of albums from the 60’s and 70’s on this list, there are times I feel a little fatigued. Especially by all of the psychedelic hippie music. Some of it just seems very cookie cutter to me. Where Os Mutantes’ debut differs is that it is actually unique. It combines Brazilian rock sounds with western psych rock. And this feels truly psychedelic. More than most other albums from the same era. It’s actually weird and trippy, which are qualities an album like this should have. This may be controversial, but Jefferson Airplane’s second album is a big “60’s psychedelic” album. And it didn’t really feel psychedelic at all. Not in the same way this does. The only issue is although those sounds are really cool, and I can appreciate, they don’t make for amazing music. Which is probably why there are bands from the same era who went more mainstream. They didn’t go that route. But that’s why this stands out. I can respect how they stuck to their roots and fused that generally don’t go together. Rating: 6/10

I was really excited when I first read about this album, thinking it would be interesting at best, but I have to say that I found its cacophony boring.

This is a really eclectic record. Definitely on board with its vibe. Favourite tracks: O Relógio, Adeus, Maria Fulô, Senhor F, Bat Macumba, Le premier bonheur du jour

Kooky stuff.

Kind of goofy and a little strange in places, but I loved the variety of instruments and the general vibe I got from this. I don't speak Portuguese, but it didn't seem to matter, as the words were just another part of the sonic assault.

Sounded a lot like 60s psychedelia from the U.S.

Almost a 4.

It's pretty fun.

Some songs were so nice but didn't live out the expectations

Out there and a lot of fun, if pretty raggedy and uneven (which could be down to dodgy production) and a bit silly (glad to see Age of Aquarius in Brazil could be just as foolish as in US). One has always secretly wished to speak Portuguese and never more so than just after listening to this bouncy and singalong-y wackiness. "Le Premier" is charming/lovely.

Interesting mix of Brazilian music and psychedelic pop. I'm not sure its my favourite of either genre though

Cincuentero tranquilo. Como música de baile de los 50's.

Nice surprise. In some places it's bursting with energy and personality. In others it's a kindergarten jam session with a mess of glockenspiel, whistles, triangles and maracas all at full volume.

A lot going on here. Privacy rewards repeat listens. True psychedelic music. Weird sounds.

Interesting but too experimental

This is some peculiar and interesting shit that I never knew existed. I can't wait to play this the next time that I have friends over for dinner. Notable tracks: O Relogio (so dreamy), Adeus Maria Fulo, Senhor F (this is like a Portuguese smash up of Sgt. Peppers and When I'm 64, so weird and fun).

I’m not normally a fidelity snob, but pretty sure this was recorded by sellotaping some grease proof paper over a bucket. Cool vibe but a bit hash on the ears.

First listen Saved 5/11 Top track: A Minha Menina

Another new one on me and another Brazilian band on the list. Canny this, strange enough to be interesting while still being poppy. Cant beat a bit of psychedelic pop in my view! Chunks of this did pass me by at times but on a whole very enjoyable and would probably be back. 3.5

I think they had more fun making this than I had listening to it. A rare one where I think I will be pessimistic on the rating - had a lot of 4* vibes, but the second half grabbed me less.

Enjoyed the total randomness of this.

This is the kind of thing I want to hear. Non US and Europe music. Even if it's clearly based on what was happening in those places at the time. This record is wild too. Way out there. Totally hippie and free.

The opening track isn’t great but the quality jumps up from there to a decent 60s psychedelic rock album.

I actually kinda liked this! Hectic, sometimes a bit grating, but sometimes great

Hmmmmm

The good stuff.

Feels like the soundtrack from some obscure, avant-garde sixties movie with no plot. Not really my cup of tea but not terrible either.

A little better the 2nd time. Ave Gengis Khan is the best song.

respectful length. kurt cobain had mildy ok taste in music. too beatle like for me.

Weird underground Brazilian Rock music. Okay.

Sounds partially interesting

3/5 Three pretty good songs.

8th June 2023 Listened while working from home. Hypnobirthing and painting in the evening. Enjoyed the combination of big band, salsa and off kilter rock. An original record, 3.5 if I could.

…I’ll need to come back to this one later. This feels like the kind of weird, experimental trip that will change the way I look at music some day, but right now, it just went in one ear and out the other. Absolutely some highlights here on a first listen, but right now, I just wasn’t in the mood for this type of album…

Pretty wacked out psych rock which reaches the limit of it's songwriter's ability

some good riffs

idk lol. is This brain control??

Great surprises

There are definitely good bits in this, but overall it's a bit too random 1960s for me. It's different, interesting, and from an unusual place (for me), which appeals.

I'm gonna go with 3 starts for appreciation not necessarily enjoyment. Not that it was bad.

Pop rock

The thing about these envelope pushing bands is they don't know or care about when to stop, and there's definitely some line-crossing happening here. When the album started, I really wanted to hate it - I even had a nice Senator Kelly zinger in the chamber - but it kind of worked! Best track: Ave Genghis Khan

Some of it was a little too tinny and hurt my ears, otherwise it was enjoyable.

Dug some of it.

Þetta er mjög áhugaverð plata. Ég þarf að stúdera þetta band meira!

This album isn't lacking in vibrance or originality, but a bit of cohesion wouldn't hurt. Enjoyed most of the tracks individually for their out-there approaches and arrangements, just wishing there was a stronger melodic throughline to connect some of the noisier, spastic moments in a little better.

It was an ok listen, felt like it was trying too hard to be psychedelic, but some decent tunes mixed in there

I enjoyed this. Murky and atmospheric, but also groovy.

Moments of this work for me but the majority doesn't, I think its quite heavily let down by the production.

Too weird for my taste, had some good songs but will not listen to it again.

Sounded cool but I have a hard time connecting w/ music in other languages. Nice background vibes.

A decent little album. 3/5. Favorite Track: A Minha Menina

забавный. не поняли ни бразильскости, ни психоделичности правда

Fun album with some good tunes and the moment of "oh, yes, of course I know this song".

Great sound production for it's time.

Funny mess, so many sounds

Taking on an underappreciated role, Os Mutantes brought the sounds of the 60s from England and the US to Brazil. Echoing contemporaries, this album shows the reach of the musical genre and the unique blend of the sounds with the Brazilian culture and tones.

Would enjoy this more if I was high

Beatles but Brazil and more guitars

More interesting to me than it was good. I'm glad that I heard it, but I don't know that I'll really be seeking it out again any time soon.

A very interesting album. I’m not sure if I enjoyed this is the way I did all the others, but it was intriguing and I might listen again when in an experimental mood

Un poco raro a veces pero bastante bueno en general, no había escuchado de él.

music is very interesting. I don't speak the language but it seemed that the mixing of vocals with the music was nicely done. A fun listen

I was expecting another terrible 60s album, but I quite enjoyed this one! I'd say I will come back to it.

Trippy. De rustigere nummers vind ik best wel vet

Odd Brazilian psychedelia. I'm sure I've heard one of the earlier tracks in a Tarantino movie. Interesting but it kinda floated by like a fluffy cloud.

These fellows sure are wacky. Good music

Super weird, have no idea what was going on lyrically. But it's funky, it's happy music, that's something to always appreciate.

A really fun album, a bit beatle-esque and also very experimental... Perhaps too much. It does tend to feel over the place and confusing at times but it's really fun nevertheless.

Sounds neat but didn't grab but a ton, good vintage psych though.

Interesting album. I'd say was very groundbreaking at the time. Very 1960s. Quite liked it.

During "Breaking Bad," one of the characters listened to a song called "Crapa Pelada" by Quartetto Certa. It means (roughly) "Bald Head." It's a goofy comical piece in a blend of Italian and Milanese. The quarter sing it in a cartoon voice, but I tend to think of it more like another instrument along with the band playing behind them. Knowing this, it made me appreciate "Os Mutantes" a bit more I think. Yeah, knowing the language would have been a lot more helpful for the songs. But I think ultimately it's not necessary for the enjoyment of the album. The flat-out goofiness of the sound effects and music really lent itself to what the band was tying to do here. Ultimately yes, it would have been helpful to understand the lyrics and that ultimately drew me back. But the music itself was pretty good, but it did have that late 60s experimental feel. I will say I really dug "Bat Macumba," and "Ave Genghis Khan" (as opposed to "Ave Maria" lol). So although I won't be coming back to it as an album, I did enjoy it. But relistenability is key here to my giving it a 3. Not something I am coming back to.

A cool album for sure. Think it would resonate strongly with me if it was in English but that's only because trying to decipher lyrics is a huge part of my listening experience. Musically though, a very good time and completely inoffensive.

Felt like the Portuguese equivalent of The Monkees.

Souvent vu ce nom, mais première écoute. C'est sympathique. La pièce en français est ma préférée. Cet album a sa place dans cette liste.

Initial thoughts: more experimental than I expected. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. Vocals are great, can’t comment on lyrics. Final thoughts: overall hit or miss, but still fun and enjoyable. Best song: Trem Fantasma Worst song: Bat Macumba

This is very, very interesting on a musical level there’s always another layer and sound effect to every song a good handful of them go through multiple parts instead of traditional song structure. I would be lying to myself if I didn’t say that I find it a little bit harder to listen to albums completely in a different language but it’s not a major thing. Taking the language barrier out of my criticisms it’s a 3 though as I will admit that some of the extra sonic layers can mess up certain songs and I’am not a massive fan of the way he sings. Still decent though. Also bat macumba should burn in hell.

Very random, but very fun! Didn't get some of the lyrical references, but I really enjoyed the music. Sounded surprisingly similar to some of the more interesting stuff going on in the anglophone world around the same time - with a Latin twist.

Not bad. Pretty zany instrumentation and interesting melodies, reminds me of later Beatles, monkees, mamas and papas. Stuff in Portuguese always sounds alien to me and this one particularly more so. Interesting listen but not really for me

I had no idea what the fuck they were saying but some of those songs kinda bopped

Some weird French? psych-rock?.. Not horrible Not great

Interesting. A little too much for my taste, but it was still good.

The band name sounds familiar, but that's about all that I could have told you about Os Mutantes before listening to the album. The album sounded like some late 60s music, with a few tracks that reminded me here and there of the Monkees. The album was fine. I like hearing new things outside of my self-selected music selections. There wasn't anything that stood out in particular from this album (for better or worse), but I'd be open to hear more from the band.

I did not hate this as much as I was expecting to! It was fun, even though I knew nothing of what they sang.
