another album from 1967, what is amazining, 12 tracks in less then 28 minutes... Samba from the woman who sang Girl from Ipanema
Relaxing music that would be great for driving. Gives italian country side in summer time drama movie vibes. Its all pretty samie though, the whole thing just blends together. It really is just solid background music I like "You didnt have to be so nice"
A very sweet-sounding voice and a wholesome, fun album. I enjoyed it! I can't see myself listening to it again, though, and this really isn't my kind of music.
I like Astrud a lot but maybe not her best album!
2.7/5 Well well, another samba album. I recognised some melodies here and there, and most songs sound chill enough to play as background music somewhere - but only instrumental. The singer though... geez her voice is annoying. The strong reverb doesn't make it better. Sorry, but this ain't it. Good for Astrud Gilberto that she transformed a cameo on the song "The Girl From Ipanema" into a whole career, but there's music for everyone after all. This however is not for me. 2.7 = 3 rounded up in this economy, I think it's fair since the music itself isn't bad.
102/1089 Parade was kinda camp… i loved that This whole album was just nice chill vibes, i enjoyed my time with it and the way the instrumentation and vocals are so quintessentially 60s without sounding dated in a negative way 64/100
Eh, it was okay background music.
I suppose it evokes a certain mood. But it was kind of boring.
Not really my thing but this wasn't bad to listen to.
Not bad, but not that memorable either. Simpsons: No
Fine
alright, very chill
Fun! 3.5 stars
Although not on this album Astrud Gilberto sings Call Me. This is the tune that Jerry St Clair uses in phoenix Nights for his song Corned Beef. For that alone she’s a legend but samba is samey
A nice voice and very chilled vibe to the album. A couple of comedy tracks that wouldn’t have been out of place on Sesame Street - Parade anyone?
Funny how some albums are so completely of their time, but in a good way perfectly encapsulating a style that just won’t ever be recreated. This one, while samba based is somewhat poppy and has cinematic soundtrack qualities (albeit occasionally nearly sounding like a 60s movie sex scene about to happen). The song with the child aside, this was a decent chilled listen. Last track probably the best.
pretty basic sounding, instrumentation is nice, Astrud's voice is nice has that unnecessary Parade song, became pretty disinterested halfway through, all the songs sound way too similar
Catchy album
A little fun, the duet with the child was cute, and it didn’t overstay its welcome at 27 minutes running time. But for the life of me, I cannot understand why they would put a parade march dead center of this album.
The vocals are enhanced by the accent and the music is enjoyable, but forgettable. The most memorable song is the Lovin’ Spoonful cover: cute, but its not good.
6.5/10 Astrud Gilberto's voice is lovely, and this is an enjoyable listen for the image of a cocktail party in a Peter Sellers film it conjures up in my mind, but unfortunately the actual songs are fairly forgettable collectively and individually. 'You Didn't Have To Be So Nice' is distinctive for the duet with a child, and is probably the only song I might return to from the album, but even that is doubtful. A pleasant but inessential album that doesn't really seem to belong on this 1001 albums list. Standout song: 'You Didn't Have To Be So Nice' Listens: 1
Let me put it this way — baiano/baianês probably carries the most sing-song quality of all Portuguese dialects, much like the accent English spoken in Wales. I believe this is why Astrud Gilberto — born in Salvador to a mother from Bahia — has a voice that is so distinctive in every single language she sings. It's truly another instrument in the jazz ensemble; soothing, percussive, and natural all at the same time. Put this album on while cooking or having a BBQ, and you'll find everybody starts shaking their hips and smiling. However, I don't like the parade song, which should maybe be at the end like a 'bonus track'. Also, nobody wants to hear kids singing so cut that track, please. The entire album could've used a touch of attention towards flow, but I guess this was early days for albums as an experience. It's also the first of my 1001AYMHBYD journey featuring tracks that aren't in English and I'm glad to welcome that — I look forward to rediscovering a lot of world gems like this, and finding new ones. This is far from the best singer or musician to come out of Brazil — it's neither peak samba nor peak bossa nova — but it's a warm introduction, and I'm hoping to see the more impressive artists along the way. I'm already shocked Seu Jorge doesn't seem to be on here! Also, not Brazilian, but I recommend everyone listen to the wonderful voice of Cesária Évora.
Not something I'd normally listen to. Glad this list made me. But I won't be listening again.
Well that was nice.
Well done but not my style
Pleasant and pretty!!
hard genre to fuck up... she got close
6/10
I Had the Craziest Dream that I had to Stay and listen to this album.
I was dreading this after her ASMR performance on a previous album, but when she's not whisper-singing, it's actually pretty good. Some of it was pretty boringly static, but I enjoyed enough of it.
I really liked the first song, was really chill and loved the vibe. It got really repetitive after that though so I started getting bored, which was a shame Alright on the whole 3 ⭐️
Coolie
3.5 For an album titled “Beach Samba”, samba only felt hinted at, and beach vibes required a large stretch of the imagination. That said, I actually kinda dug this. I don’t really have a strong reason why I did in particular, but something about the vibe of this record felt very warm and welcoming, kind of like a visit back home, and I thought Astrud’s soft, tender voice paired incredibly well with the music. Considering the length of most of the songs, it almost felt like a breath of fresh air washing over you. However, in that same vein, most of these are over before you really have a chance to grab onto them, to the point where it’s near impossible to point to favorites. Fortunately, I don’t think the album really needs to be viewed in that light, as the sort of stream of consciousness it has going on more than makes up for it. There’s really nothing here to dislike - the duet on You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice was even cute enough to excuse the shitty harmony the two have going on. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I loved this, but it has a charm and short enough duration to it that I think warrants re-listening. Definitely the kind of thing that’s inspired me to check out more of her work.
Feels like a decent vinyl to have in collection, but not something I’d stream often
jo men det här är ändå en stark trea. gött att ha på i bakgrunden kan jag tänka mig.
Requires mood. 3.4
++: Stay, Misty Roses, A Banda (Parade), Oba, Oba, Canoeira, My Foolish Heart, Não Bate O Coroção +: The Face I Love, I Had the Craziest Dream, Dias das Rosas (I Think Of You) +-: Bossa Na Praia (Beach Samba) -: You Didn't Have to Be So Nice 6,9/10
Good elevator music
Astrud Gilberto was actually who Len Houmous auditioned for Strictly Come Dancing to. He smashed the audition with a near perfect Samba but Claudia Winkleman veto’d his appearance. She said she couldnt control herself around him! 2.9 11/12 You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice
Like her better with Stan Getz.
Enjoyable
Pleasant but ultimate background music rather than anything more substantial and inspiring
Her voice is sparse and lovely, but some of the songs are grating. I'm thinking of the parade song, and the one with the kid singing. Very cutesy.
Very nice, pleasant, classy, sophisticated, soft, summery, pretty, relaxing. Nothing more, nothing less. Key tracks: Stay
I really enjoyed this album. Smooth lounge act sounds, fun bouncy lyrics full of joy.
Joj ova bossa nova nikako nije za mene. Super je otpjevano, super je od sviramo ali nešto u ovome mene tjera na slom živaca. Mislim potpuno je u meni problem ali je tako 😃
Classic “pretty enjoyable album” that you’d find in a yard sale from an old person who didn’t really like music
This album was pleasant, but especially for someone with no real background with the genre, it just didn't feel "of significance" in any real way. It felt like something that I could easily put on, with some nice melodies, but it doesn't feel like it really does anything particularly spectacular or influential.
I definitely liked this album more than Getz/Gilberto, but I think I learned that bossa nova is not my jam. It's the perfect soundtrack for a summer beach day, but outside of that context, I just struggle to connect with the genre. This album fell victim to that struggle as well. I did like the overall listening experience that Gilberto delivered, and her voice was so pleasant and smooth. I'll probably end up re-listening to this eventually, and I enjoyed the world it created. I just wish bossa nova lent itself to more variety.
this is music for such a specific vibe and scenario that i'm not sure i'll ever listen to it again
nice
Different in a good way.
This is #day381 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… even though I'd never heard this before, I must admit it's a pretty enjoyable record. There's something about Latin jazz and Bossa Nova that I find strangely groovy and appealing. Maybe it’s my deep-down dream of one day visiting Rio de Janeiro to see the magnificent Christ the Redeemer statue? Either way, this is a lovely, easy listening for a lazy summer Sunday afternoon, like today. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day382, aka the second full week of my vacation, aka the last days of August.
Not my thing but it's fun
Una escucha placentera. Astrud Gilberto me remite tanto al verano (por la bossa nova), como al otoño (por su preciosa voz). Aún así, creo que en su discografía hay mejores álbumes que este. 3/5
Very relaxing, laid back music
Many songs are quite nice for background listening, but some are really awful, like "parade" (suddenly marching music??) or "You didn't have to be so nice" (featuring a child that cannot sing).
Pretty remarkable that the most famous bossa nova artist of all time was married to a bossa nova performer for a short stint. Coincidence that Astrud's career only took off after getting divorced? I didn't enjoy this as much as other bossa nova works but there is a nice alternative spin on the genre in this album. I should knock this down a star because Parade was so annoying, and lyrically I wasn't drawn in much but also most of these albums aren't in English so for all I know, this is as good as it gets. But musically I found this fairly enjoyable, a pretty easy 3 star.
Nostalgic. Easy listening. Her life story is more interesting than her singing.
Some good individual songs, but the album simultaneously felt repetitive and overly eclectic.
Fun sound.
Schöne Feierabendmusik zum Nebenbeihören.
This is good background music but nothing really amazing.
She’s just okay by herself. Wash actually kinda disappointed that most of it was in English, wanted more Portuguese.
was hoping more of the tracks would be in Portuguese so having over 1/2 in English was kind of a bummer. and expected to enjoy this album a bit more, but think after about 4 tracks of exact same tempo, & tone in her voice..... it just all blended together. until You Didn't Have to be so Nice-the childs voice & lyrics were just odd.
Pleasant sounding, but came off as very dated. It was nice to have playing in the background.
pleasant
Pretty enjoyable. It wasn’t amazing but I didn’t mind it.
oh this has got covid lockdown me allllll over
Title says it all, short (27 min) but easy-listening.
Easy listening. Soft gentle vocals. Slow burning album. Short but sweet. No real stand out tracks. Probably not my favourite genre. Sounds great but the tracks don't catch my imagination. 6/10. No one favourite track.
I would love to hear her and Doris Day do a duet together.
Decent, though not something I'd likely listen to again
I really liked the music (except for Parade, I really don't know what were they thinking), though the song would be even better if they were all in Portuguese, but it's hard to articulate how much dislike her voice.
I quite enjoyed it, but it sounded like a 28 minute advert for Martini.
Why the wise men of 1001 Albums you Must Hear Before you Die picked Beach Samba over the superior The Astrud Gilberto Album is a real mystery and adds to the theory that some albums included on1001 Albums you Must Hear Before you Die were picked with all the care one employees when playing a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey after nursing cocktails all afternoon. That said... Beach Samba is a fun album that would sound great at a Tiki Bar with that special someone as you tease and flirt with each other long past happy hour.
Inoffensive and pleasant—except for the child’s voice on “You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice” and the downright jarring “Parade (A Banda),” which seems to have flown in from another (Sousa-esque) musical universe. There’s nothing too memorable here. I liked the songs in Portuguese best, but maybe their lyrics are just as pedestrian as the songs in English?
My knowledge of Brasilian music from age 6 to about 13 was based on the Bossa Nova demo rhythm from my first Casio keyboard. From 13 to 41, this was diversified to include the theme music from various Nike commercials featuring the Seleção juggling footballs around an airport in the run-up to a World Cup. Thankfully I have now listened to a couple of actual Bossa Nova albums to educate me further. And while I may not be rushing out to buy this, it made a nice accompaniment to my doing a little Latin cooking while moving my hips. I'm always reluctant to relegate an album to 'perfect background music' but this is exactly how I found it.
Brasilianisch. Dudelt so dahin. Aber die Harmonien sind einfach schön. Parade (Banda) ist mir als Ohrwurm noch irgendwie aufgefallen. Vote 3
Great elevator music
fine 3/5
Вайб, на любое настроение. Очень тви из-за ее голоса, что мы здесь очень любим. Лучшая песня - Stay.
Something about the vocals are so gorgeous. Highlight was “Stay” and lowlight was “Parade”. Easy listening and very chilled.
Oh dear... For the largest part, this is a pleasant album with attractive semi jazz, very mainstream but well made and as always with Astrud Gilberto just nice (easy) listening. But there are two gigantic failures on this album. Parade (a Banda) - or the title reversed - is really ridiculous. It's out of place, it's not nice, it's just laughable. But that's nothing. The duet with her six year old son Marcelo... Come on! The singing is so horribly out of tune, it's simply awful. I repeat: awful. Maybe she shouldn't have recorded eight albums in four years. By the way, the cd version - that I own - is extended with a number of songs with Walter Wanderley, which makes it a better album.
Fine. Completely inoffensive. Not sure I needed to hear it before I die. This list has a surprising amount of bossanova.
Not terribly beachy. Background.
Short, sweet, and primarily chill. Soft music for a relaxing get together or a stressful workday. Most of the songs were pretty good, but the Parade song stuck out like a sore thumb. You Didn't Have To Be So Nice was a cute song and I'm happy she got to sing with her kid, but it did interrupt the flow of the album a little. Still, I wasn't annoyed or even bored.
This is really lovely but perhaps not so memorable.
This is another collection of delightful background music for a 1960s outdoor party at night time. This is wonderfully pleasant. I see why they don’t make music like this anymore but somebody should every once in a while.
Mostly enjoyable (the song with the kid was a little off putting for me). Liked the songs with the Walter Wanderley Trio backing. Unique voice. 3/5 Might listen again
02/07/2025 I have no real opinions on this.
wirds nomel es bossa album woni e füfi gib? bin ich e genre bitch? gsehmer. stay coole afang aber wüürkli nüt bsunders. misty roses schöne flöt und cooli akkörd! ihri stimm isch soo schön au. sie chillt amel mit sonere selbstverständlichkeit uf tön wo chönd sooo scheps töne bises sich uflösed. parade isch etz ehner en stilbruch ähm was hä ähm wiso. soo goofy what. aha sobald sie afangt singe isch besser. aber äh nai trotzdem. oba oba obalangweilig nai voll easy. canoneiro au afoch so sehr repetitiv. irgendwie alles z churz zum öpis mache. i had the craziest dream huere geils intro. und hübsche song. arra gement uf beach samba uuuuhuere geil. alte de mitem chind isch jo süess aber au afoch nöd eso cool zum lose well de goof cha halt nöd so guet singe well iscj en goof? oke sorry astrud aber meh als e 3 chani dem nöd geh. afoch nöd soo spannend. super stimm cooli arrangements und so aber naiii

Some songs reminded me of a place I'd rather be, others of the perfume section of the department store.
Good record.
Not really that interesting.
Not my cup of tea but I did enjoy it. Pleasant music to have on in the background while going about my day.
Fun, chill listening. “Girl from Ipanema” vibes. Couple of songs were a little too “noisy” for lack of a better word. Would listen to again.
Soulful, slightly eerie, lively. Misty Roses is creepy l like the March (parade) I don't like how it switches style Its really chill but not for me
Pretty fun album, also the perfect length. I enjoyed listening to it, but I don’t think I could handle more than half an hour.
Not my typical cup of tea but good for it's genere
this is nice
Astrud Gilberto is a whole vibe. This album isn’t as good as her collab with Walter Wanderley, but it’s still delightful.
Really a pretty voice might have to come back to this.
A charming little samba album with a phenomenal voice at the center. Astrud Gilberto brings a versatile set of tones that blanket every track with an energy and smoothness that feels like medicine for the soul. The arrangements quickly switch from simple dreamy jazz club styles to full scale swinging tunes. Fave Songs: Stay; Misty Roses; The Face I Love; Oba, Oba; Canoeiro; Beach Samba; My Foolish Heart Worst Song: I Had The Craziest Dream
This was totally fine as background music you'd drink a few cocktails to, but nothing on here that got my blood pumping or my feet tapping
Background music for a sophisticated 1970 pool party.
3 stars
Not for me
Harto del bossa y la samba yanqui. Que se yo, el criterio de la anglosfera es malisimo. Nota: 2.9
Favorite Track: Here's That Rainy Day
Behagelig bossa nova bortsett fra den ene korpsgreia!!!!!
Pretty voice. Fun album.
So far this album is so quick that you blink and tracks go by without you even noticing. The stereo with drums on one side sucks, there are some creative choices I cant get behind like Parade, Oba Oba and you didn't have to be so nice, but it is such a short album that I can just ignore them and it will be gone. 3/5
should have been an EP. -1 for circus music.
What was that parade song ... ? Everything else was hunky-dory, but the parade ... WTF?
Not really memorable
хорошая но прицельно три дня слушать не буду) переключилась на новых Турин брейкс))
Great voice, but the songs aren't that good.
The sounds either started out sounding like a Christmas song, or nursery rhyme, at one point I even heard Wizard of Oz, but then they would settle into a chill vibe with soothing female vocals. I really enjoyed this one, but can’t see revisiting it often.
Delightful. The drummer on this album is FEASTING on these rhythms, and, with a couple exceptions (A Parade and You Didn't Have to Be So Nice - cute though it is) everyon sounds great. Excellent late 60s Brazillian pop Jazz.
sure. she makes pretty music. 3 stars.
Easy listening, which came during an overall stressful week for me. Thanks! Overall, I enjoyed it but it's probably not something I'll repeat.
Nice enough.
Very lovely. 3 Stars
This album doesn’t take you to the beach... it takes you to the gift shop.
This album is the perfect counterpart to Engelbert Humperdinck’s music—calming and ideal for relaxing. I wouldn’t single out any particular track as a standout, though “The Face I Love” is quite charming. Overall, it’s a great choice for background music during a romantic first date—although, personally, I’d still prefer one of Fellini’s soundtracks for that occasion.
When I think of beach, I think of march time numbers like “Parade.”
A bit poppier and more lush compared to other bossa nova entries on this list, a move towards my preferences. Jazzy and enjoyable. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: Misty Roses, The Face I Love, I Had The Craziest Dram
A light and airy album of Brazilian bossa nova mixed with 60s vocal pop. A lot of songs felt like a ray of sunshine, particularly the bossa nova numbers. I was less sold on a few of the pop tunes (like the song about parades). This is the woman who originated "The Girl From Ipanema," so props to that!
Nice little record here. I don't mind a little samba and I certainly don't mind a little bit on the beach. This is a nice entry point into this kind of music for someone who would be unfamiliar. "Parade (A Banda)" was a fun surprising marching band vocal tune that really came out of nowhere.
Singer from the party?
Interesting sound
Enjoyed the album, and would listen to some tracks again.
One of the few records that I bought cheap on vinyl when I started collected. I wasn't certain what to expect, but loved many of the songs on this record. 3.5 stars if that was an option, but I'll keep it at 3
the music is soothing. her voice is pleasant and the singing is good, but nothing extraordinary. however when you put the music with the singing it is whimsical.
I kinda like this
Aight
#567. Not terrible by any means, but very much not the type of music I desire to listen to. 3/5: not for me.
Lotta good samples here
Good
Yeah man beach and samba
Now available in your local charity shop bargain bucket.
# Album Name: Beach Samba # Artist: Astrud Gilberto # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: This is 100% elevator music. Wow. There should be an elevator on the cover. Some of the melodies arent bad. Its not offensive but not exciting. Nothing grips you. I look at the track list and see "Oba Oba" on there. I immediately think of the football advert. I am greatly disappointed when it comes around and its NOT that song. Dang. Thats a shame. Id probably give this a 2.5 if i could. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
Lovely album; pleasant listening.
Jako zanimljiv album, baš mix svega - čujem jazz, francuske šansone djir, American 1920s, malo bossanove i to sve sklepano u fora album. S vremenom sam osjetila malo zasićenje jer nema puno iznenađenja, ali to je takav stil i žanr. Ovoga puta mi je leglo. 3/5, 6/10.
Sounds like the music playing in an empty restaurant on holiday. I liked "It's a lovely day today".
Definitely holiday beach vibes, songs can be a bit forgettable
Rating: 3/5 | Favorite Track: Stay --- Bland, a tad forgettable, but totally inoffensive. I did find a few of the tracks to be pleasant, but I don't anticipate returning to this album any time soon.
This is exactly what I thought it would be, and I had a pleasant enough time with it for the most part. 45 minutes of incredibly similar, softly softly music is a bit much though I admit.
3.25
Such a vibe. I appreciate it. It's lovely. But do I love it? I like hearing it ... would I choose to listen to it?
Of all of the albums that Astrud Gilbert sang on this is less impressive. The big arrangements don't suit what made her great as a Bossa Nova singer. Whenever there are those elements on this album, Gilberto is great. It's good to try something new but the bigger arrangements just don't sound very interesting.
I listened to this at work, and it drifted by pleasantly enough (apart from You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, which is a bit sugary for my tastes). However, I think the optimal conditions for listening to this would be in a 1960s New York bachelorette pad while mixing a cocktail. I bet it would sound terrific.
Good Samba and Bosso Nova record. Great for relaxing and lounging on the beach,
Entspannter Kollege
Pretty good, relaxing, nice
Very gentle easy listening. Tranquillo. Stand out song - Call me
Happy beach music, obvious theme. The song with the kid singing was unlistenable but good progression and vibe overall
Dreamy bossa nova. Not my type of thing, though I'm a big fan of bossa nova. I think I prefer tracks in the original Portuguese, rather than translations.
lovely mostly. it’s a wild choice to have a marching band in the middle of a samba record.
Fun easy listening Made me wish I was near a beach and had a pair of white haviianas!
Nice background music.
Sunny, sandy, good vibes 😎
Fine
Catchy tunes
I actually required lock-in music and this wasnt it, but generally I enjoyed
On observe une candeur des genres et du propos, autant qu'une certaine retenue dans la voix. Peut-être pour cette raison, ça m'a laissée plutôt indifférente
This is music to have in the background while your in the tropics in a cabana chilling with a good book. Away from everyone but still close enough to observe all the party and fun going on but not be bothered by it. Pretty specific but that's what I got. Just good music and good vibes. Not 100% my thing but enjoyable non the less
This was very calming, she has a soothing voice.
This was the chill vibe my day needed.
Honestly not that bad. The instruments were good. The lyrics were ok at best but Astrud's voice is IMMACULATE. It's so gentle yet so powerful and that's why this album was actually kind of good. 54/100
3.5/5 Calming instrumentals and her voice goes nicely with it. Bossa nova reminds me of the beach. :) . Seems like it could be used in a 60s movie as filler music which isnt a bad thing just the vibe i got. Parade was annoying af tho.
Cute, but not particularly noteworthy
Would love this on a lazy summer afternoon.
Pleasant background music
fun nice background music. love her voice. love the orchestration.
Dug o ritmo but wish you kept it all in Portuguese. The English lyrics were weird and distracting.
It’s good and I betcha you’ll feel better if you put this one on. It’s on the boring end of the spectrum for the genre and a little bit of a puzzling pick to me given how many other samba and bossa nova albums there are out there that you really must listen to before you die.
pitu, pitu, ale zaczęło się sympatycznie
Well this was pleasant. I danced around the kitchen and annoyed my wife.
Listening to this I was immediately cast in a montage music scene of a late 60s B-movie, driving the coast, lounging on a beach having nothing to do with the movie at hand, only to have an impromptu meet-up with Austin Powers…just before the whole vibe gets wrecked by a marching band.
Totally fine. I’m notching my score back a quarter point for the ridiculousness of the song, Parade. 2.75/5
Very easily listening, and not in a bad way really. I probably wont come back to it, but it wasn't a struggle to get through.
Not sure what the chances are of me getting the Gilberto part of the Getz/Gilberto split that I got two days ago but I reckon it's possibly quite small. Anyway, this was pleasant enough but I think she's better with the jazz of Getz behind her. It's very unoffensive though so a mid-rating seems fair
Sounds like an album full of Dusty Springfield's "The Look of Love," so it's pretty good based on that alone.
6/10
Very pleasant, easy to listen to. If anything a bit too easy as the album glides by quickly and you find you have only been half listening!
Nice little samba album. I think 27 minutes is the perfect amount of Samba to listen to for me, and I pretty much liked this all of the way through. 3/5
Not my genre but good anyways. I had a good time with it. 3/5
Pretty! C
Great voice. Good music.
Easy, jazzy, 60's vacation
Easy listening just as I expected. I enjoyed almost every song but, there were two songs I definitely didn’t like (Parade and You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice); the kid singing in “You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice” threw me off and kinda just made it sound like a song you’d hear in an episode of Sesame Street. Overall I really liked it and I would throw it on while just having some chill time.
Of the time
Nice to have something a but different but wouldn't listen again.
-maybe not the most thrilling work I’ve heard from Astrud Gilberto but very pleasant nonetheless. 50s-70s Brazilian and inspired easy listening music has a special place in my heart -as with most Brazilian music I absolutely love the instrumentals and tones. really beautiful stuff -Favorites are Stay, The Face I Love, and My Foolish Heart
Nice vibes
Ganska soft och skön musik.
Not bad samba music, pretty inoffensive and goes by quickly. Not much else to say here.
Really lovely! Honestly I had never heard of Astrud, but this is top notch stuff ❤️
Oooh a vocal jazz album! An enjoyable listen, very nice to have on in the background. Rarely calls attention to itself, so nothing jumps out, despite all being very good.
The album evokes memories of old VHS movies, perhaps classic James Bond scenes of 007 going ashore on an exotic island. The music is certainly well-crafted for its genre. However, it fails to fully capture my interest, as it doesn’t offer enough variety or depth across a single album.
Beach Samba was a pretty good album for what it was. It does feel like an elevator album (It's been a long time since i used that term) but i do feel like it does a good job at being one by being a pleasant and relaxing listen. The times that the album does divert are kinda all over the place when it comes to how good they are. Sometimes they can be cool, like Gilberto having her son sing on track 11 but they can be off-putting at points like that one parade song which did sound rather jarring. However, i still think that this is a good album and one that you should listen to when you want to relax on a beach or something. Best Song: Misty Roses Worst Song: Parade (A Banda)
Comfy listening, but most of the songs are so short I don't really have time to enjoy them before it's over.
What an amazing voice. It's like silk and evokes the most relaxing beach vacation imaginable. It lacks any distinct hit like 'The Girl from Ipanema', but on the other hand, it's nice to hear Astrud Gilberto shine, following her separation from Joao Gilberto, the father of Bossa Nova. This is a great background record that lets you occasionally close your eyes and get swept up in the vocals and the sounds that recall Rio. I only wish they were a few more risks on there and make it stand out among the other Brazillian albums on this list. But I'll take it for her voice alone.
Nice easy listening, although not that memorable
I could listen to this again but I don't think I want to. it's too inoffensive. I think I've just heard too much bodsa nova / samba already
Pleasant and short bossa nova album. I was a little disappointed that the majority of the album is English language; I would have enjoyed more Portuguese but I think it was only "Canoeiro" plus parts of the dialog in the background on "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice." I feel guilty admitting it, but I do like the goofy parade song. I don't really enjoy watching parades but I think I like the idea of watching a parade.
Die Stimme ist recht unaufgeregt. Kann man mal hören.
Listened to Joni Mitchell right into this. Tone of voice was very similar. I kinda liked this in a nostalgic way. Not that I heard it before but it felt so 60s. Interesting listen.
little to chill and beachy
nice listen. Romantic and sultry sound. Gives me the feeling of looking at past relationships with rose-tinted glasses.
Why was this chosen over “The Astrud Gilberto Album”?
Are you looking for a background album for when you want to have groovy conversations with your friends in your shag-carpeted sunken living room, while sitting on avocado-colored couches surrounded by paisley wallpaper? Well have I got the album for you!
Low key album with a Girl From Impanema vibe. Fine.
Pleasant, not the type of music I listen to, but it’s ok.
Fun how it makes you feel like you’re having cocktails in Cuba, but not really my cup of tea.
Chill Sunday morning music for cleaning a car to. We enjoyed relaxing to this.
This wasn't terrible.
Good vibe
Chill stuff.
WARNING!!! Do NOT misspell Astrud! There’s only one s and the t comes BEFORE the u!!
Average
This took me to vacation. That was fun and light
3.5. Perfect depending on time and setting
This is a record I would find in a used vinyl store and pick up on a whim based on vibes. It delivers for that. Very 60's.
Curious why this particular album of hers was the one included on the list. I've enjoyed her other stuff much more.
I like Astrud Gilberto and this album is lovely, with breezy, feel-good bossa nova songs, that is a lovely listen. However around half of the songs were in English and I prefer her singing in Brazilian Portuguese because her singing style suits her mother tongue more. Anyway, it's pleasant music, for more Portuguese songs I'd give it a 4 easily.
I don't know what it is about Bossa Nova but it makes me feel good. It's such a vibe. It's easy listening but it's also interesting. There are lots of sounds happening. Astrud also has quite a pleasant voice. This record also has that like old timey cursed ballroom sound/production that is kind of spooky and feels a little bit like a distant happy memory.
What a groovy little gem! This feels like it is trapped in a very specific part of the 60s, which is just great. I'd love to hear a contemporary homage to a lot of this kind of music. I don't even know how to categorize this outside of just "Samba"? It's jazz, but it's also kind of pop and kind of rock and kind of beach rock at that. Her voice is so sexy! I also love how the music is playful, but also very serious. It's earnest but it's also very whimsical. Its super interesting sound. I liked every song on this record, but Stay was for sure my favorite. It's the epitome of this whole genre and record.
chill bossa album I would give it a 4 if it didn't have the marching band song
sorry this was fine but you lose a star for using a marching band like that
3.4 listened 1x
Totally fine. I enjoyed it. Doesn't need to be on this list...I don't think. 3/5...really 2.5 so I am rounding up.
I never liked her voice. Bossa Nova and Samba are both really fun and I’m happy there’s some Brazilian representation on here but, blegh. Her voice is so okay. It shines in songs where she is supposed to sound bored but beyond that it decays into the background
Felt like I was stuck in a tropical lift, and then a child appears?
As someone who is quite unfamiliar with the genres of Bossa Nova and Samba (and Brazillian music in general), I found this sort of "Westernized" sounding take on the genre very easy to get sucked into. Though it's in a different way than say an artist like Caetano Veloso, where this album leans heavily into the poppier sounds of its time. Astrud's vocals here are so warm and airy which complements this kind of middling, yet simultaneously luscious sound of the '60s production. Unfortunately with this style of album, once you've heard a single song, you've pretty much heard them all - it's just a matter of wanting to (justifiably) seek out more of it to get lulled into. 'You Didn't Have To Be So Nice' is maybe one of the most wholesome songs I've ever heard - to the point where I almost shed a tear. Something about the instrumental melody, the duet between Astrud and her son, the grainy sound of it all, it's so inviting. The following closer 'Nao Bate O Corocao' has a more defined syncopated drum pattern, giving a punchier and jazzier vibe that I quite enjoyed. A quaint little record. Despite not being anything special, it was a lovely way to kick off the day.
great voice, nice short tracks, really relaxing vibe
most of this album is a pretty pleasant samba album from the late 60s. astrud gilberto's voice is iconic and the album, for the most part, is really calming and chill. there are two big exceptions to this: one is 'a banda (parade)' which is an old fashioned marching band song??? and sounds like a song more fit for the soundtrack of the musical, 'the music man' than a samba album. the second exception is a bizarre cover of the lovin' spoonful's 'you didn't have to be so nice' that is a duet with her young son. i guess it would be nice and sweet but the kid cannot hold a note like his mother can, and you can REALLY tell. it is pretty god-awful to listen to. i'm sure it was a nice moment for them. the rest of the album is pretty decent to good and fun to listen to, but those two tracks drag it down some.
Fun summer songs
Kind of fun. I liked it.
Pleasant
It’s fine kinda repetitive and the kid singers were really weird and bad
Reminded me of samba you would put in a video game or YouTube video but you didn't want to pay a licence for it so got a royalty free version
Meh.
Pretty repetitive but I dig the overall vibe.
Too much of a sixties movie about things I never felt intrigued into. I mean, I understand the musical prowess, but once the big band horns kick in, it has lost me. Nonetheless.
As the singer of my last band often said about songs: "Des duad koam weh", which translates into "It does not hurt anyone"... Music sometimes needs to hurt, this was just ok for me.
I found this to be a pleasant listen. Definitely of a very specific time. I found myself thinking that they really used flutes a lot more in the 60s. This isn't the first album that's made me think that, but it reinforced it for sure. I'd put this on in the background at a party, maybe without the parade song though...
It's... Pff, I'unno. It's just some easy listening bossa nova. Perfectly servicable. I just don't know what it's doing here on this list. Like, what exactly is so notable about it that it deserves to take up a spot? It can't be for Astrud herself, because you can already hear her singing on GETZ/GILBERTO. And that album doesn't have any out-of-place circus music, so...! Again, I'unno. It's pretty listenable; I'm just not impressed with it.
It sounds alright, and her voice is nice, but overall, it's just a 3 for me, chief.
This was a pleasant listen. It had a late 1960s chill vibe going on with it. I could easily see my dad having a copy of this album on vinyl, even though I know full he does not. Side Note: Any time I see something that is listed as Samba, I immediately think of the organ at my grandparents house, where it had different built-in tempos and beats that you could select while playing the organ.
What you expect from a bossa nova album. It was surprising that one of them turned into a John Philips Sousa march, but overall a nice chill album.
Typical 6o’s bossa nova
Very pleasant
Not too bad. A simple album with some interesting elements. Nice and short.
Soft pop, kinda jazzy, very smooth voice
Þetta var æðislegt. 3.5 stjörnur!
Sure
Dr No is on the loose. James Bond is at an exotic location sipping a drink, thinking about which lady to assault next.
A nice, short collection of songs that go by in a breeze, with Astrud still putting her singing prowess to good use after the big bossa nova boom came to an end. Favorites: Misty Roses, A Banda (Parade), Oba, Oba, I Had the Craziest Dream, Beach Samba, I Think of You.
Its an album i would never have found on my own, but i love this type of voices, you can let this sound all afternoon and it wouldnt bother you, its the opposite of noice. Every sound and instrument takes you to a relaxing vibe, and astrud is the first one to take you to that trip.
It is fine. A lot of the songs start to sound the same, and the one with the kid singing was a little annoying, but overall it is fine.
A soothing and pleasant listen, but I doubt I'll ever listen to it again.
Nice to hear the lyrics to all the gold/elevator music! But honestly, very smooth, easy listening that goes with almost anything. The parade song sorta pulled the rug from under you in the middle, but it quickly settles down again. 3/5 not phenomenal but if you’re feeling like Austin Powers, then put this on, baby, yeah
This made me feel like I's been transported back in time to the 60s. Quite enjoyed it
Fine for a mid 60s bossanova/samba feel.
Comfortable and pleasing as a cool breeze. Over just as quickly. Sticks in the memory just as much.
Very smooth and easy listening. Song with the kid was kind of bad but otherwise its a cool and well produced. It goes by really fast you kind of doze off and it becomes a perfect background relaxing music.
This is another fine example of the fact that the writers of the 1001 Books also choose non-english albums, but very often these are "mixed English albums". Regularly these albums contain contributions of English or American musicians. In this case half of the album consists of English pop songs. It is not a bad album, but certainly not of of the best of Astrud Gilberto.
Super fun.
I listened to this in the evening with some fairy lights on and it fit the vibe perfectly. Much preferred to the wave of rock we’ve been riding. I did NOT like the duet with the child though.
I always wondered who created that quirky, almost whimsical-sounding 60’s Latin-inspired jazz-type music. Now I know at least one of them. It’s such a specific sound, feeling very constructed, almost like a Spector-esque wall of sound type of construction. It feels very much of its own era. Nelson Riddle’s score of the 1966 “Batman” movie feels very similar in vibe. There’s some great stuff here, but there’s some stuff that feels more experimental and…doesn’t work as well. “Parade (A Banda)” is either a novelty song or is written genuinely by someone who fucking loves parades. Either way it doesn’t work. But the good stuff is good. Really chill vibes and worth a listen. 3 stars. Standout tracks: Stay, Beach Samba, Nao Bate O Corocao
Good but nothing memorable
That was alright. Music to sip daiquiris to.
It's a bossa nova/samba album, you know. Couldn't be bad, but that's not one I would put a highlight on. Still... Pleasant listen!
The voice begs for more straightforward and much less schmaltzy arrangements. It all feels so broad and variety show-esque, trading on the basest/crudest conception of the exotic. "Parade" and the duet with the kid shows just how misconceived the overall effort is and "My Foolish Heart" how much better it might have been (even it's far from the most subtle reading of that song). Sure, she sounds sexy, but sings like a little girl, resulting in a pretty high creep factor. Easy listening can be hard to like for evolved modern sensibilities. Just go hear the Stan Getz. A charitable 3.
An inoffensive album that absolutely sounds like the 60’s - couple of proper stinkers on there that break the feel of the album but in general it’s the kind of thing I’d expect to play in the background of a hotel lobby somewhere. I’m now off to watch Austin Powers.
It's fine as background music but didn't inspire me to revisit it
Could have died without hearing this. Inoffensive Bossa Nova
Stutt og laggott. Voða ljúf alltaf, hún Astrud.
Perfect background dinner music, nothing I’d try to impress anyone with.
I would have preferred to listen to this on a beach. 2.5/5
I like all Music yet had not heard of the artist. Judging by the cover and hairstyle it was clear to be a sixties based item which i like. The album was ok as I kept waiting for the song to turn into the artist biggest hit. For that i gave it 3 stars
Music to be played in the background of a low-tier Caribbean resort, because it fits the vibe and no one really listens to it anyway. Except for the parade one. That was a real mood killer.
Was better than I thought it was going to be. Enjoyed this as background music while I worked. Don't know if I would go out of my way to listen to it again, but I did like it.
Liked it more than I thought I would. Refreshing to hear something new 3
It’s pleasant enough and the bit with the kid is just (just) the right side of cloying No desire to listen to it again but not terrible
I like the sound of it, it's different that what I'm used to. She has a nice voice and I like the movement in the music.
Very surprising that the album picked was not the one that contained her biggest hit (The Girl from Ipanema) This album would have sounded much better if she had recorded it in her native language. The English lyrics felt awkward and forced with the background of the beautiful samba music. The addition of the “Parade” song was jarring, and did not belong in this album
Odd to hear an Astrud Gilberto album that doesn't have "The Girl From Ipanema", but it is still a mellow, samba-driven groove.
You didn't have to be so nice; I would have liked you anyway. Short & Sweet Best Song: You Didn't Have To Be So Nice Worst Song: N/A
Misty Roses is a bona fide fuck jam.
Nice but nothing memorable
Nice and cozy
Released in 1967, Astrud Gilberto's "Beach Samba" is a curious mix of sunshine and shadows. Let's delve into the album's elements, exploring its strengths and weaknesses. Lyrics: A Blend of Breezy Romance and Missed Opportunities The album primarily focuses on lighthearted themes. The title track, a wordless delight, embodies the carefree spirit of a beach day. "Stay" and "Doralice" paint pictures of idyllic romance, with Gilberto's signature whispery vocals adding a touch of sensuality. However, some tracks like "A Desconhecida" ("The Stranger") hint at a touch of melancholy, a yearning for a connection. Overall, the lyrics are simple and evocative, prioritizing mood over complexity. Music: Bossa Nova Bliss with Occasional Detours The core of "Beach Samba" lies in its bossa nova foundation. Lush arrangements featuring iconic musicians like Ron Carter on bass and Toots Thielemans on harmonica create a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. The gently strummed guitars and laid-back percussion provide the perfect canvas for Gilberto's understated vocals. However, a few tracks stray from this winning formula. "A Banda (Parade)" introduces an unexpected military march vibe that feels jarring, while the novelty duet with her son on "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" disrupts the flow. Production: Warmth with a Touch of Blandness Eumir Deodato and Don Sebesky's production is a double-edged sword. They craft a warm, inviting soundscape that perfectly complements Gilberto's voice. However, at times, the arrangements lack dynamism. The focus on creating a smooth and effortless experience can lead to a sense of musical monotony, particularly in the latter half of the album. Themes: Sun, Sand, and a Hint of Yearning The album's central theme is relaxation and enjoyment. The music evokes images of lounging on a beach, sipping cocktails under a warm sun. Love and romance are present, but without deep emotional exploration. Occasionally, a touch of longing creeps in, suggesting a desire for something beyond the carefree existence it portrays. Influence: A Legacy of Breezy Sophistication "Beach Samba" may not be Gilberto's most critically acclaimed work, but its influence is undeniable. It solidified her status as the quintessential bossa nova vocalist, her voice forever associated with the genre's sun-drenched sound. The album's easy listening nature likely contributed to the continued popularity of bossa nova, particularly in lounge settings and background music for films and television. Pros: Gilberto's captivating vocals: Her whispery, nuanced delivery remains a major draw. Lush bossa nova arrangements: The core sound is beautiful and creates a relaxing atmosphere. Standout tracks: Songs like "Stay," "Doralice," and "Beach Samba" are timeless bossa nova classics. Cons: Uneven song selection: A few tracks disrupt the album's flow and overall mood. Limited lyrical depth: The focus on simplicity can make the album feel emotionally lightweight at times. Production's occasional blandness: While warm, the arrangements sometimes lack dynamism. In Conclusion: "Beach Samba" is a pleasant sonic getaway. It's perfect for creating a laid-back atmosphere or for those seeking a taste of classic bossa nova. However, listeners seeking a more diverse and emotionally resonant experience might find it lacking in depth. Ultimately, "Beach Samba" is a charming, albeit uneven, collection, showcasing Astrud Gilberto's signature style at its core. φωτογραφία προφίλ based on this review and on the pros and cons rate the album out of 10 no yapping Εμφάνιση προχείρων Based on the review's analysis of "Beach Samba's" strengths and weaknesses, a fair rating would be a 7 out of 10. Here's the breakdown: Highs: Gilberto's vocals, core bossa nova sound, and standout tracks are excellent. Lows: Uneven song selection, limited lyrical depth, and occasional production blandness bring it down. While undeniably enjoyable, the album's shortcomings prevent it from reaching masterpiece status. However, it remains a solid bossa nova experience with timeless appeal.
