Reviews (page 14 of 14)

I get the crossover stuff on Licensed To I'll, but this doesn't appeal at all. In the parlance of generations too old to appreciate it, it's just noise.

What even was this?!

Tried to emulate License to Ill but couldn’t.

Boah, nee

A crappy generic rap album that uses the weirdest samples at the weirdest times. I already don’t enjoy hip-hop and this album did not help change that. Hard pass on this one.

Mid af Basic rap Beats are kinda shit Their voices are annoying Skip

Hell no. Great arrangements and bass though. I'll quote another review by saying "Good background music. Shite foreground music."

First Beastie Boys album I've heard. Was not a fan.

Shoutie Mac ShoutFace Fucks sake

I just don't care. It's obnoxious.

Always found bestie boys a little annoying.

Just not for me. I gave up after the third cut.

Absolutely awful band

repetitivo

Almost gave it 2 stars but there was something almost offensive about the sound of their collective voices.

Honestly just a bad album. Not sure why this is on here. 0/10.

Really unimpressed with this one. Licence to ill was so promising for the beastie boys, but it seems they couldnt keep the magic going.

Found the shouting a bit repetitive sometimes didn't realise a new song was playing

Awful noise.

Appreciate the talent but not my style

Tired of the Beastie Boys coming out here! Caca!

Yeah , never really been a fan of the Beastie Boys. Seemed to be playing at being gangsters and very shouty. Not for me

Favoriten High plains drifter The Sound of science

What a chore. Sorry, but I just can't go the whole album with the headspace required to actually enjoy the non-stop yelling.

This album might be for you if you are a 90s skater boy with a bleached Mohawk and an inclination to sit on the stoop and say “oh shoot girl! Sick fit!” to passerby. Alas, I am not this.

I just couldn't get into this. First real stinker of this endeavor.

zu viel "beats"

i seriously dislike "rap" "hip-hop" in all forms. this stuff is corny beyond belief, it was then and it is now, no amount of revisionism or critical reevaluation will ever make this good

Beastie Boys has like one good song and it isn't on this album.

Damn. this is actual trash. Rating: 1.0

I grit my teeth and sat through all 53 excruciating minutes of this album, I deeply regret every single second of it. I cannot imagine anything more grating, maybe pushing a half inch space bit in my cordless drill directly into my skull, but I think it would be awfully close. I cannot overstate just how annoying I find the beastie boys, and I really truly hope I never have to listen to any of this garbage again. 0*

My ears are bleeding!

3 white boys screaming sporadically at the mic might have been fine for the 80s but this does not age well.

I hope these get better

So, an album constructed with myriad samples, plus the usual braggadocio vocals. This all makes for an album which sounds a bit like a single track on repeat. And what's more, my music streaming service only appears to have an extended 20th anniversary version. This isn't a musical style that appeals to me.

Irritating bullshit. The entire album is the same song. That song wasn't good the first time even.

Ik kan hier echt niks mee. Heb hem niet eens afgeluisterd…

Couldn't even listen until the end.

Not the kind of Beastie Boys I like. best: the cover photo 1,5

Not for me, every song was pretty similar but I can understand why people enjoy it.

Run of the mill hip hop rap. Not a fan and gave up after a few tracks.

Not a fan of this one. A bit too shouty and riotous for my taste.

I’m surprised Beastie Boys are not on my controversial list. I hated III Communication but quite liked Licensed to III. Both these appeared on my list at the beginning of this year and at the start of my 1001 quest. Unfortunately this album reverted me back to what I originally thought of them. I never knew of this album and now really need to forget it. 1/5 25/11/24

What a shit album. I stopped 6 songs in. Why is this on the list instead of Licensed To Ill? I mean if you consider Beastie Boys to be "must listened to before you die" why chose Paul's Boutique? Licensed To Ill at least brought something to the scene, packing a punch with those gritty guitars against their crap rap style and genuinely has a couple of bangers on there like "Fight for your right" and "No sleep til Brooklyn". Paul's Boutique is just crap rap.

Today I learned I really dislike the Beastie Boys. They've got 3 good songs (none of which are on this album), and the lead singer is incredibly annoying. The lyrics are foul, but if there was a purely-instrumental version of this album, I'd probably like it.

Complete rubbish...start to finish. Waste of time.

OK. I'm a 12 yr old schoolboy and I'm writing shit lyrics with my two friends, and then someone offers us the chance to put them over 4 million samples and make a record. Cool! There's some great sampling work in this - can't believe at one point I found myself thinking, "Is that really a bit of Musique du Burundi??". But none of it makes up for the fact that the songs, as with all Beastie Boys songs, are puerile garbage. I hated this so much. I'll reluctantly give it one star for the samples, and because I can't give it zero. It also explains why I hate Lonely Island so much, because this is all I hear.

Many of the reviews have praised the use of sampling on this album, and I heartily agree. Mostly, however, because it is the only thing notable about the album. In the end, it felt more like a rap version of mystery science theater: three guys rapping over other media as if providing commentary. For MST it works. Not so much here.

I really hate the Beastie Boys. All of their music is just noise. This album suuuuuuucks.

I like some of the Beastie Boys stuff, but their music is pretty juvenile and simplistic. 1.5

don't like that style

This is some of the worst crap ever recorded

I read recently that it is possible to breathe through your anus. This album proves that it is also possible to sing through it.

Can ikke holde deres stemmer ud

Rap, 1989 -> 1

Nicht mein Ding! Rap crap

Not my taste

Funny at times

I don't know enough to gauge its historical or cultural impact, but I know I didn't really enjoy it or find it compelling

This is the one album I started on this list and just couldn't get through.

Too shouty, some interesting samples tho

I am not a fan of hip-hop and never will be

It remains the same, whether black, white or any other shade, I only like hip hop in exceptional cases. I just don't understand it. It's the same here. The aggressive shouting of the kids makes me aggressive myself. I was surprised when I read that the Dust Brothers produced the album. Their film music is one of my favorites. This album is far away from this. 1/5

Ugh Shouty middle class american brats. 'Oooh but the samples are the best' Listen to the originals that they sampled then!"

Not my cup of tea

Yo yo yo .. hell no

I really don't like the Beatie Boys' yelling rap style, or the way they finish each other's sentences. The sequence of short songs at the end of the album particularly grates. If this was an instrumental album, it would probably earn 2 more stars from me.

No music, just rap and noise

Look, I even bought Licence for Ill. And I'm sure the samples are very clever and the lyrics socially aware. If I were to cite a rap artist as being important I'd probably choose somebody like the beastie Boys or Run DMC. But thirty five years on this just makes my head hurt. The first 90 second sugegsted a more grown up and bluesy feel to things. That lasted 90 seconds. Looking Down The Barrel of a Gun adds the hard rock samples that made the band famous. And gets it a star. There are many records offered which I wish I could give no stars to. But I'll never listen to this again.

God I fucking hate the beastie boys

Not me piece of music

Not a fan, just not… I tried I really did but for me it was a nails on the Chaulk board experience….NO, Just NO… but to each their own…

God, I hate this band. The vocals are so grating. It doesn't matter if they did innovative stuff with sampling when this is the music you make. I hope I don't have to listen to the Beastie boys anymore.

No Thanks

I did not like this album - not the Beastie Boys I am used to.

Only 2 albums ago, I received "Phrenology" by The Roots. That was an album that made me fall even more in love with rap and hip hop. That is the complete opposite of what this album has done. Like, what the fuck is this? These guys sound like they're 13 all the while they are shouting at me in their whiny voices. And while all of this is going on, the ear grating instruments are doing whatever the fuck they are doing in the background. This is by far one of the most annoying albums I have ever listened to. Never again.

I am not a fan. They sound squeaky and obnoxious which is not my thing. I do like them when they have a really fast beat because I can get past it but most of their beats are slow. They have some cool beats though and I like what they did with the cow bell in hey ladies. I also enjoyed 5 piece chicken dinner. It gave me whiplash though because I was not expecting it after all of the other songs sounded the same.

Not really my jam. Too brash for my tastes. Was glad when it was over.

The Beastie Boys are just not my cup of tea. I don't care for their music.

I’ll be honest, I never really liked the sound of their music. It baffles me how they have so many fans. They always sounded like an amateur act from mom’s basement that never got an upgrade.

Nope… love the beat, can’t stand the whiney boy vocals.

wasn't that good - no catchy or memorable songs. The one guys voice is really grating. And it's basically all 3 of them (there are 3, right?) singing together the majority of the time. I have no idea why this is rated as a good album.

Ahhhh schrecklich, und jedes Lied klingt gleich!

Not my style.

Some words rhyme, but some also don’t?

Didn’t like

Good energy but ultimately repetitive and uninteresting. Alright, if you like 90s rap but with annoying voices.

Nope. I can't do it.

Absolute garbage. Put me off so much that I subconsciously put off this whole 1001 albums thing for many days now. How could one even think this deserves to be on the list? Any basic album I listened to in the early 2010s on repeat that sounds a little crappier now could easily replace this shit.

All the same rap rhythm, boring, unintelligible, no musical interest.

Harsh listening

Not for me.

Good rap. Stopped halfway thru

no musicality at all

Honestly an excruciating listen. Did not enjoy it at all. I don’t get it and never will.

My biggest problem with these guys is that everything is the same level of screaming into the microphone: there's no subtlety whatsoever. Many artists of this genre have the sense to have a good musical hook and then have their vocal style match. These guys see their music backing as a challenge and just take to shouting over it/shout it down. What a waste. This is the musical equivalent of screaming "Deez Nuts!" over and over. "Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun" is the closest to them finding that balance of vocals and music that work together rather than against each other.

Would give 0 if I could.

I hate the beastie boys.

Horribly cringy white rap

"The Sgt Pepper of Shit Slop". Someone's having a larf. Utter shite from one of the most risible bands of all time.

Terrible.

When you were 15 years old this album was good.... and if you were 12 it would be awesome lol. You can't take these guys too seriously, it's a bit if fun, with fun lyrics, Egg Man is a piss, but all great fun. I really don't get why people hype up this album as a statement to hip hop, as it is extremely samey for every track. That said, if it was on I would listen to it and enjoy it for what it is, a bit of kids hip hop fun, but I would never ever dream of selecting it to listen to.

Can't listen to these guys. Their music makes me feel uncomfortable and irritated. Like a group of school kids who have just discovered how to record themselves shouting and 'rapping' and they should never have been famous ..

Oh yay, I love listening to yelling.

It’s just noise

actually like so bad just barely okay at points 1.5

Disappointed.

This sucks.

Still not a fan of this era of shout rap.

So bad, Beastie Boys are so overrated. Every song sounds the same

Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique Only heard very little from them before this. - To All the Girls – Short opener with smooth beats. - Shake Your Rump – Aggressive rapping that isn’t something I enjoy. Often described as “frat hip hop”, which I think is accurate. Bass is pretty crazy though. The lyrics though are not appealing to me at all. - Johnny Ryall – Beat sounds really similar to the previous track. The eponymous Johnny Ryall is a homeless man who drinks instead of doing crack and used to be a rockabilly star. I really hate the interplay of their voices on this one. - Egg Man – I like the precussion opening this one. But I don’t like their voices still. It’s a song about throwing eggs at people. It’s dumb and juvenile. - High Plains Drifter – Ugh. - The Sounds of Science – Not good. - 3-minute Rule – Nice bass and rhythm on this one. The lyrics are still dumb and their voices are annoying. - Hey Ladies – Beat is really nice on this one, but I don’t like the constant changes, and most of the song is still annoying. - 5-Piece Chicken Dinner – What the hell? Is this mocking southerners? Is it just being weird? Is it being racist? I generally have no idea what it is. - Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun – From crappy hip-hop to heavy industrial crappy hip-hop. Their voices are still awful. It’s different, but it’s still bad. - Car Thief – Intro is interesting and actually sounds good. Then their voices come in and they sound awful again. - What Comes Around – Part of it has a smooth that is totally wasted in this terrible song. - Shadrach – It’s an absolutely terrible pseudo reference to a Biblical story. - Ask for Janice – Ending track that adds no value. I’m going to try to find something good to say despite my initial reflexive utter distaste for basically every song. They have some nice beats. The bass occasionally is great. Much of what they do is unique and offbeat. That’s the positives. The negatives are dang near everything else. Their voices are incredibly annoying, both in sound and in attitude. The lyrics are incredibly juvenile, and the “clever” parts are often just a bunch of pop-culture references thrown out at lightning speed without any sort of connection or actual meaning to them. Almost every song is straight obnoxious. I understand this was influential, and apparently it was innovative, but I can’t imagine ever wanting to listen to anything on this again. If it influenced actual good hip-hop, then great, I’ll just listen to them. I usually do a “top tracks” section in my reviews, but there isn’t a single one I’d want to hear again.

What garbage nonsense is this? Just bad, bad.

Very similar to the beatles - car thief and shadrach were alright

I understand this album truly was groundbreaking and is loved by many, but I simply can't stand the genre. Too much seemingly random noise and samples. I didn't enjoy this one...

Not mad on Beastie boys style. Couldn't listen to this.

Such music cannot be in must hear list...

1989: Shake Your Rump

I gave this a try even though I can't stand rap and hip-hip. Yup. I still hate it.

Sooo boring. 'I'm just chilling like Bob dylan' is a line I may add to my repertoire though.

Not a fan….

never, ever again

Rubbish.
