Not my thing

I had no idea that Beastie Boys sounded like that, for some reason I kept thinking that they have some Beach Boys vibes, but this is some 1989 rap where they mainly just talk, which I am not a huge fan of, but I know that a lot of people really enjoy. I would say that it was a bit meh, as the whole album seems like one long song when you're not really paying attention to it.

Nervig

Samples and music are great, but unfortunately I can't get past the vocals.

If you've ever wanted to get a group of adults together to jump rope for an hour but are sick of the same old skipping-rope rhymes, this is the album for you. Great beats, fantastic use of samples, the vocal delivery... leaves something to be desired. I think I heard some triplets in there, that was nice. The vocals sound best at higher tempos.

2 - Getting a bit bored of beastie boys now

I’ve almost viscerally disliked the Beasties for my entire 40 years breathing, but I decided that an endeavor like this 1001 album thing is my (possibly final) chance to see if I can’t come around on them. And while I respect their place in hip hop history, and enjoy some of the production, I just can’t do it. The rap-rock-frat boy-white guy delivery will always be like nails on a chalkboard to me and I blame them for every white rap-rock I’ve hated in the decades that follow. Not for me. Just give me the actual rappers.

Shouty and repetitive. But i can see the significance though.

Respect but more of a greatest hits guy

The Good: We learn that Paul, so it seems, has a boutique! The Bad: We never really find out why we are informed about his boutique… The Ugly: I guess that means that I am not allowed into the secret club… I am no fan of drum machines. I am no fan of sampling. I am no fan of rap music. For me 1989 was a transition year, so I was listening to “old” records and not spending too much time listening to new product being released… for now, it seems like I did not miss out on anything. 2* because I didn’t hate it entirely

Good album just not my cup of tea really.

Not a fan. There was Mabye one hood one.

I'm sure if this had been part of my youth I'd have loved it. But coming to it now, it's so shouty and grating that I have trouble uncovering the genius. I can see why it's on the list, but it's a skip for me.

Okay, not great

These are great when they pop up in a playlist but after two or three back to back sound like whinging nerds.

Not for me, rap silliness

The deeper we go on this list, I have even less of an idea of what kind of hip hop I like. Well, at least now I know that beastie boys aint it.

Full of 90’s nostalgia but as hard as I tried, I just don’t like the Bestie Boys :/

No. 258/1001 To All The Girls 3/5 Shake Your Rump 2/5 Johnny Ryall 2/5 Egg Man 2/5 High Plains Drifter 2/5 The Sounds of Silence 2/5 3-Minute Rule 3/5 Hey Ladies 2/5 5-Pieces Chicken Dinner NR Looking Down the Barrel of A Gun 2/5 Car Thief 2/5 What Comes Around 2/5 Shadrach 2/5 Ask for Janice NR B-Boy Bouillabaisse 2/5 Average: 2,15 Just not my taste. To me this only sounded like some guys shouting into a microphone.

Hip hop. I don’t really like the Beastie Boys. It’s mostly the style of rap, just gets on my nerves. It’s a shame because the beats and sound is good.

Still not my cup of tea.

So this is how I find out I don't like the Beastie Boys. Well, it was bound to happen eventually.

Old school rap. Much better than the rap crap of today. Long live Beastie Boys.

love beastie boys but this isn’t their best

I know this album has a cult following, but honestly, I don’t get it. Compared to Licensed to Ill, this just feels all over the place. The beats are weird, the flow is messy, and none of the tracks hit the same way. There’s a lot going on, sure. Tons of samples, inside jokes, and deep cuts. But clever doesn’t always mean good. I spent more time wondering what was happening than actually enjoying it. Definitely not for me.

Stern.

Not that great

Very much an album of its time. Really don't know what else to say. It's almost more a pastiche of how rap music was back then, except it is the genuine article. It was an interesting listen to be reminded of that era's music. Would I buy it? No. Part of me wants to give it a 3, but part of me says is it worth that? I'll decide on Monday. Aaarrrggghhh! This is really difficult, for all I've said about this album, it's still head and shoulders above Bonio and Big Jobbie, but I just can't give it a 3.

As a fan of Frank Zappa's wackier comedy albums and stupid songs I feel like I should have enjoyed this album a lot more than I did. I had very limited exposure to Beastie Boys before this, I could only really say I have listened to Intergalactic and Sabotage which are fun novelty songs that I usually won't skip if they come on shuffle. But a whole album of that kind of music just doesn't work for me. This album has good production with the Dust Brothers who also did the production for Hanson (music to sacrifice children to) and Guero by Beck. Songs like 3-Minute Rule have some okay lines and fun lyricism but overall this album wasn't able to hold my attention primarily because I just really don't gel with the vocals here at all. As I said before, fun for a single track, grating when you have to listen to 57 minutes of it. The vocals especially on songs like Hey Ladies really had me checking how long the album had left. I imagine this is what Woody Allen would sound like if he decided to make rap music instead of raping his step daughter. The most enjoyment I got out of this album was recognising the Mississippi Queen sample on Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun, which is also one of the only songs I wholeheartedly enjoyed. I gave this album a couple of goes and unfortunately my feelings on it didn't change. Also these guys did a concert for Tibetan 'freedom' lmao

More than 100 samples? Really?

boring

It’s alright just not my cup of tea

Was thinking about the lyric "Humpty Dumpty was a big fat egg" for the rest of the album

I've heard of the Beastie Boys but I thought they were a rock group. So I was very surprised when this album started playing! The album started alright but the second half wasn't very good.

Don’t really care for the old rapping style

jake peralta would listen to this right after streaming folklore by taylor swift why is the second part named after tomato fish soup????

Kinda crazy going into this as somewhat of a very casual Beastie Boys fan already, but literally having never heard of this album This album ASKS the question "how many samples is too many samples?" The Sounds of Science is a truly INSANE track that contains MULTIPLE Beatles samples. Also I believe this is my third time mentioning Pink Floyd only 10 albums in, but Pink Floyd samples occur on two tracks on this album I THINK. There's also some Hendrix and also apparently some self-referential stuff which is very silly and I love it. I know very few tracks on Licensed to Ill, To The 5 Boroughs, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty, but know at least 3 tracks off of each that I genuinely enjoy and I think this contributes to my opinion of Beastie Boys as not an "album group". It's very overwhelming to sit down and listen to an album in full with this kind of energy behind it especially if you do not enjoy the whiny, shouting delivery approach that is a feature of basically every track on this album or any Beastie Boys song at all. There's something vaguely..cringe about the Beastie Boys in a modern sense, but I feel that that's exactly what I enjoy about them. Besides Hello Nasty, all of their projects feel so far removed from serious and clean-cut, rooted in sample choices, delivery choices and some of the just AWFUL lyrics (besides the misogyny, just genuinely confusing lines) "I was making records while you were sucking your mother's dick"????? or just ALL of '3-Minute Rule'. It's not a terrible album in any capacity, but it becomes a bit tired and the gimmick (same flow, yelling etc) dies off about halfway through. While I like them, I fear the 'frat hip hop' title given to them is entirely true and this album doesn't do a lot to disprove that. I still enjoyed it, specifically The Sounds of Science, Hey Ladies and Shadrach, because I like the Beastie Boys, but they definitely have better I also enjoyed most of B-Boy Bouillabaisse suite, but I think it did not make sense both in the order of the tracks and also within each of the tracks. It was weirdly disjointed, and I feel like a lot of it could've been left off the album. 2.5/5

not for me (shouty rap is annoying) but good for what it is lol

I both loved and hated this album. There are so many great ideas here, but they’re held back by what feels like sloppy execution. Some songs feel great and polished, and some feel like they were just being lazy. None of the “skits” or the intro really add anything to the album. They’re just…there. It’s all over the place. I didn’t get the suite at the end, what was that? What was cool were the samples, some of the hooks, and the great flow the best songs had. It was a little hard to listen to (as it is with the Beastie Boys), because they sound kind of whiny and cartoonish at times. But it’s the Beastie Boys. I actually really like them. I don’t know, man. This is a weird one. I love “Sabotage” and “Sure Shot” but those aren’t here and nothing that is reminds me of those song’s energy. I know that they were blurring the lines between rock and rap/hip-hop, like any experiment that’s going to create some odd results until perfected. I’m surprised that this is the Beastie Boy’s album that gets included. I hope there’s another here because this cannot be the best they have to offer. Two stars. Standout Tracks: Egg Man, 3-Minute Rule, Hey Ladies, What Comes Around, Sadrach, Stop That Train

Just meh. Felt like the beats were the primary star and the lyrics were just secondary and mailed it. Best song: Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun

All songs have the same 8 year old rhyming style. 2 guys shouting alternatively. Not as epic as I thought it would be, based on their influence over all these years. Disappointed.

Shake Your Rump

The Boys have always been overrated, but thanks to their genre, plus pale pasty appearance, they’ve been anointed some cult fame, with plenty of fortune. A couple of good songs. Otherwise, nothing close to special. Just another long list of shit music in a slow era.

im sure the sample work is impressive but their voices are so grating i can't take it the b-boy bouillabaisse part was a little more fun tho!!

3/10. Far too whiny for my taste. Also, I'm not really a fan of rap music.

Doesn't really suit my taste in music. Didn't follow the lyrics carefully.

Wow, how many Beastie Boys albums will be in this list of albums I "must" hear before I die. This album is a bit more mature than their first recording, but they are still not a big deal to me.

Nice beat. Whiny. 2

I think if I listened at a park or something I would feel differently. Like the music, hate the vocals

American rap.

I’m just not a fan of Beastie Boys. This album didn’t change my mind.

it was interesting but not as cool as liscense to ill

stop YELLING at me!!!!! in all seriousness - cool samples, but the screaming gates on you after, say, 2 songs? i like Sabotage as much as the next star trek fan but it seems the beastie boys are best enjoyed in very small doses.

I understand why so many people like this and I can see the influences taken from this album. At the time it would have been groundbreaking but it's now a historic album that has been outdone.

no….

Not for me

I love the Beastie Boys but...this album ain't it.

Licensed to ill over this.

I've never been sold on the Beastie Boys, atleast not on their lyrics and screaming party-rap. They're way too noisy and improvised for me. Listning to Paul's Boutique just confirmed me. My favorite album by the Beastie Boys is the instrumental album "The In Sound from Way out!" It has no lyrics and I really love it. I think that says a lot of my oppinion of the Beasties.

I may have liked this if it came out when I was 10.

Was never a huge fan. Gets monotonous. Can only take a couple of songs

Although I liked License to Ill a bit (grade of 3), this wasn’t as good. A small dose of this goes a long way.

Way too shouty but liked the instrumentals (not that much tho so I rate it 1.7)

Not the best beastie boys

Jarring as hell but some songs decent

100/1001 🌕🌗🌑🌑🌑

I know it's genre defining and all but there's lots of Beastie Boys stuff I much prefer.

Too much of an OK thing. A landmark in sample-based production, the problem is it is full of reminders of cool soul and jazz and reggae and bluegrass tracks I'd rather be listening to instead.

I didn't know that I didn't need this in my life until I listened to it. Their timing is good it's just not really for me. Kind of reminds me of a parody. Like, I could (and have) listen to Weird Al songs on a regular but I don't have any interest in listening to an album to straight through..if that makes sense.

Some is ok. So.e sound like high school kids goofing around in their basement.

The Beastie Boys SUCK and that's a FACT, I think they are fucking WHACK! Seriously though, there has never been a hip-hop act with less swag than these guys, Gen X can keep them.

Didn't need the whole album

Only so much People Shouting into the Microphone I can take

Favourite track: Egg Man/The Sounds of Science

Sufficiently different from the other beastie boys albums on the list to be interesting, but idk that it holds a candle to either of them

I guess this was a departure from License to Ill in that I didn't find any of these songs particularly fun. Without as much entertainment value, this means it feels more fratty and less compelling to me, although it seems critics disagree.

It's an okay album. I can definitely see the appeal to it. I really liked the instrumentals and the backbeats, but the rapping got quite annoying quickly. The lyrics were fun but yeah, it was pretty underwhelming.

Classic Beastie Boys. Great if you're into them but the yell rapping can get old after a while. 5/10 (2.5/5)

So if you had never heard the Beastie Boys before, or maybe more interestingly if you had never heard music before, and were coming at this totally blind with no preconceptions at all, I feel like your first thought would be "wow this is terrible". And objectively I think I kind of agree. I don't think novel production methods and recording in random apartments in LA make a good album. Sure it was different for the time, that doesn't mean it's good. But then I remember this list is 1001 albums to hear before you die, not 1001 good albums to hear before you die. So should this be on the list? Yeah I guess so just because it was different at the time it was made. Do I enjoy it? No. It's too bad because I do like some of the Beastie Boys other stuff, but I am not a fan of hip hop at all, and I suppose this counts. I'll give it a 2/5 because it's not terrible to listen to like a lot of other hip hop but it lacks anything that would make me want to listen again.

Meh. Fairly boring.

The sampling, beats, collaging of styles, and energy here all deserve high marks. If there were an instrumental version of this album, I'd love it because the Dust Brothers crush it. That being said, Mike D.'s voice is so f-ing annoying I really can't take much of it. For this reason, I've never really liked the Beastie Boys. I can't get past a bunch of white boys shouting nonsense rap burns at me repeatedly. Truly a shame because they definitely have some good points and are very original. I liked some tracks on here better than their usual comedy rap ballads so I'll give them that.

Great for the time but man it all just sounds so lame now. The beats are wildly simplistic and repetitive. Does not age well. Really sounds like one of those groups that would 100% sound better live. Their remastered albums sound hyper clean, flat and one dimensional. Same problem I have with some of the Ramones, and even Rage Against the Machine for example. Less of a critique on the artists tho, idk.

ITS VERY FUCKING NASAL ISNT IT.

I cannot help but cringe. This sounds just like a bunch of teens desperately trying to be cool. Thinking, "It's hip hop as long as there is a beat and the lyrics somehow rhyme".

Unfortunately I didn't like it

The samples are nice, as a classic rock fan there's always something familiar. But the voices... one hour of shouting in my face... really not my thing.

Beats are sick, Voices are kinda meh and annoying. There is (way) better hip hop.

(4,8/6) Funny but still not my cup of tea 8,10,13

Really not my cup of tea. Very of its time - I get the feeling the Beastie Boys were a breath of fresh air back in 1989 hence the acclaim in hip hop circles. Fave song for me was 3 Minute Rule. Least fave was

Lots of shouting.

I have never been a fan of the Beastie Boys and I despise that so many modern movies feel like they need to have a Beastie Boys moment where they play the soundtrack. Looking past my distaste for the Beastie Boys it was as bad as I thought it would be. Still not something I really like to listen to but not the worst. 2 stars

Unsurprisingly, I could as well rate it based on the other two Beastie Boys albums I listened to before

Fun album. Some classic but the beastie boys always sound the same. 2 stars

beats are cool, so are the samples. I'm not super sold on their flows or voices

Shake Ya Rump is 5 stars, everything else is 2.

It's fine

Never have liked the Beastie Boys. Just something about the typical cadence of the rapping and the tone of their voices. I don't appreciate the artistry that I read from the critics. I still don't understand why they are so popular/beloved. That being said, the increased sampling on this album was enjoyable (from songs I actually enjoy). Don't think I'll listen to this again but it's tolerable.

Day 1: It's okay, but won't be my favourite. Irritating songs and the vocals are getting pretty repetitive and don't get me to hear more from them.

Not for me.

Same thing I mentioned about my previous Beastie Boys. I see, respect, and understand the impact and influence, and I should on paper love their music. In practice, I just don't care for it, and that's okay. That doesn't take away from how important they were

Didn't really care for this album as much as previous Beastie Boys records I've heard. Kind of forgettable with some interesting sample choices.

# 151 : Not as bad as it seems. Not bad, not good. Wouldn't go back to this, it's not my style. I don't like being yelled at LOL. Fav Track : Egg Man

This kind of hip hop is really tiring for me. Not that all this music is bad, but it's not for me. I'm a bit surprised, because I listened a lot to Licensed to Ill.

Finds 2 other white males. All 3 of us pinch our noses shut with pegs, then abrasively talk-yell at the same time about New York. Rinse and repeat for a whole album/career?!

well i've never been a fan of the beastie boys to start with. this is the kind of music my father blasts in the car when he wants to annoy me lol. i'm just not a fan of whatever you would call the beastie boys hip-hop rock genre. however, this album brings back lots of memories so that gives it extra points from me. new york jewish boy swag will never die. i appreciate how the album blends together and the chords. the lyrics are also goofy. alot of it sounds like it's straight out of a spongebob episode. stand out song: shadrach. overall would not relisten not my type of music xx

oh god, not again. ok, here we go.

22/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 While it has occasional grooves that don't suck, this is better in tiny doses. A whole album of juvenile rappers yelling nonsense at me is a bit much. It's like going to Baskin Robbins and trying all of their one flavour. It's not nearly good enough to be this long. At one point, I was like "okay, I get the point of this long, repetitive song." It turns out I was only 5 seconds into the song, so this "long song" was in fact a set of several. Holy fuck, these guys have no creativity. Please stop yelling at me with those squeaky little voices.

No songs downloaded.

I thought I liked this album more when it came out. I probably thought I was cooler than I really was. Listening now, I can’t really say I like it. I don’t think it aged well. Or maybe I didn’t….

Not as good as Ill Communication. Not sure I needed my 4th album assignment to be Beastie Boys after being assigned that better BB album as 1st assignment.

TOO. MUCH. SHOUTING. Worth it for the samples, went to listen the original songs and loved them all.

Never vibed with the Beasties. Adam's voice grates on my soul

Loud and yell-y

I Don ‘t like Hip-Hop.

Ugh. It’s well executed I guess but shout rap is not my thing. Some of the samples were fun but mostly it felt disjointed. 4/10

3.1/10 - Basically the same as my last rating for Beastie boys. I do not like his voice but the backbeat is pretty good on a bunch of songs. The reason this one exceeded the other album is simply because of 5-piece Chicken Dinner and A Year and A Day went crazy.

not sure what the first half of sounds of science was supposed to be. Some of the songs were decent others were less good. 5 piece chicken dinner was something. 4.5/10

Looking down the barrel of a gun ✔️

Not being a rap fan it was alright. Good beats and decent lyrics. 2

They have some good songs but they just doing hit right in large segments

Beastie Boys are best in small doses or as background music in a party setting. Listening to a full album with my full attention is just too much. I appreciate their role in music history but this album is not for me. It’s a solid 2. Loud, shouty, some very immature lyrics and just too much.

I wish I liked this more than I do. I appriciate its value in the genre, and how influencial it was at the time. However I can't get over how silly it is, maybe this kind of hip hop just isn't for me.

good, probably innovative for that time

Classic BB sound, but too many songs and some odd ones. 2/5

Listened to about half of it.

Nee, ik ben dol op hiphop, but this ain't it chief.

Never been a Beastie Boys fan...

7-11, Jell-O, Steve McQueen I think I just missed the boat on this. It sounds immature and one-note, there isn't a lot of variability, they hit one rhythm, one sound, and then never let up. Like that joke where a man thinks he's found an erogenous zone, so he just rubs the same spot awkwardly and consistently. Sabotage is hands down the best song, but Madness just sucks or whatever it was made us laugh.

ehhh to much happening. overall headache

1/5 - Never listening again 2/5 - Its ok, but not for me 3/5 - good song, but wont listen again 4/5 - I love it, will listen again 5/5 - Going in my playlist (on repeat) 1. "To All the Girls" -/5 (intro) 2. "Shake Your Rump" 3/5 3. "Johnny Ryall" 3/5 4. "Egg Man" 2/5 5. "High Plains Drifter" 1/5 I honestly have no idea why this album is rated so high. The sound and rap is unique but thats the only thing I can say about it. I dont like it. It sounds like they are screaming nursery rhymes.

Not my thing.

Given how good the production and sampling were, I'd love to give this album at least a 3/5, but the vocals were annoying and repetitive. These aren't songs that I could picture myself vibing to.

Borderline iconic. Borderline amazing. Borderline annoying. Had to skip High Plains Drifter. The backing moaning track on that song was so fucking annoying. Honestly, don't mind the Beastie Boys just maybe do mind this album.

The intro "To All the Girls' was fun, and I really liked the first song. However, after four songs in, everything started to blend together. The only way I noticed a new song begin was the silence in between them. They just yell (always in the same way too) and it all sounds the same, despite all the samples.

My first album out of 1001 and what a doozy. Would be a great album if you took out all the shitty white guy rapping. Great sample work, I just don’t like their style. It’s giving very Andrew Dice Clay, except that he was more fun.

I watched a documentary about the Beastie Boys and they talked extensively about his album and all of their other stuff Boring. I like the mixing theyve done to their vocals. Makes me nostalgic for the old GTA:SA days

nicht mein Geschmack

Like them but this one is not great. One good song. Other stuff is better.

Good but not their best album

What the fuck was that? 💀💀

I love hip hop. At its best the MCing and instrumentation are so clever and full of heart. It's a worldview-changing way of looking at musical art as a pile of interrelated pieces you can collect like a magpie, rearrange, reimagine & recontextualize with respect or irreverence or both at once. The very best of hip hop is like Ulysses was to modern literature, both a 'fuck you' and 'I love you' to all the music and poetry that came before. I did not like this at all. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

decent beats, weird lyrics

Not my cup of tea

The sample game is strong and I like the music quite a bit. I strongly dislike their vocals, all of them, specifically their metre. It bugs me so much that I can’t listen to this. The vocals remind me of the Spinal Tap version of white guys rapping.

bad and annoying

Not a huge beastie boy fan. Listened to a few tracks

When I first heard License to Ill, I think Brass Monkey, it was one of the coolest things I’d ever heard. I didn’t actually get it for a few years and picked up Ill Communication, which I also thought was so awesome. I actually never had Paul’s Boutique and just so happened to never really have friends who put it on. I tried to listen to it a few years ago and never really got into it. I listened to it again today and to be honest felt really bored. I know it’s legendary for its samples, but I just am not feeling it. Maybe I just need to listen to it a few times, but it doesn’t have the coolness of Communication, or the novelty I felt back in the day with License. I know it’s sacrilege in some circles, but I can’t see myself really jamming this.

To oldschool for me. I sadly cant really appreciate it.

Paul's Boutique feels like a follow up album where they tried more bells and whistles on their original sound. I'm not sure if I think that because it sounds different to Licence to Ill and I'm so attched to that album.

Jaa, tää kuulosti valkoiselta versiolta perus kasari-ysäriräpistä. Beastie boys löytää kunnon kapinan ilmeisesti myöhemmin? Iloinen raivo puuttuu, tää on vaan iloinen

They're kind of obnoxious to listen to a whole album of, but the songs were all pretty fun and the music was really good in some spots!

Forfriskande

I didn't love this! I thought I would. The Beastie Boys really wear me out. Ultimately their voices and personas grate on me. This album is in Sample Hall Of Fame, and as a huge sampler I thought I would hear what others were hearing here, which is reportedly a quantum leap forward in the sounds of sampling, in the hands of the Dust Brothers. From my vantage point... it's hard to hear! So many of the techniques and collage stuff sound primitive to me. Even though I know it was groundbreaking at the time, this album is frankly left in the dust in terms of sophistication and technique just a few years later by... pretty much everyone. So I don't know! Maybe the lyrics and the braggadocio are throwing me off the scent here. There were some great standout tracks, and it was a fun record to put on all afternoon. I just don't really want to put it back on. 2/5

Great album to listen on the way to work in the morning to feel incredibly odd yet powerful. Not my style.

It definitely was the Beastie Boys sound but not for me. There wasn’t even a good single on the album. In fact the best bit was the sampling of The Isley Brothers so a low 2*

Not overly fussed. Considering how much I heard the Beastie Boys through the wall growing up I was expecting at least some sort of nostalgia or something...

“Hey Ladies” brings back good memories, but the rest of the album is a little tiring to listen to.

I find the Beastie Boys fucking irritating. Whatcha gonna do about it?

Krzyczenie małolatów

I really just don’t like the beastie boys, they are not my style. The vocal tonality they choose to use is just shouty and annoying to me most of the time. I’m not big on rap or hip hop as a genre, if I was to like it I would be more likely to like more classic styles like this, but this band in particular just really isn’t for me. I really don’t see myself listening to this again.

Admittedly, the music bits of my brain were salivating before I even got it going, as I'd never listened to an actual Beastie Boys album. Normally, I just sing along to their anthems, feeling audaciously cool and hoping there is a some RUN DMC coming on too. Secretly hoping I haven't confused the two... <cringe?> While at its best these guys are “good fun” and extremely effective and catchy hooks and have a really special signature style we all know and enjoy to various degrees.... Alas, it turns out its lyrically debased if your examine it closely, they are upfront in their fascination for getting the girls, and theft are so different to the rest in the urban music space, despite the indisputably shrill and annoying vocals. Summary Does it belong on the list? Yeah, they did stuff that stood out... but I cont say this has the influential songs. The hits certainly aren't here. It does represent a consilience of styles from different genes - were they experts at assembling other’s ideas (like the film the Matrix by stealing almost every science fiction concept out there) or did they do breakthrough stuff? I have no idea.. Did I love it? Its was just OK. Somehow I preferred the first track to the rest. So no then... It's not really album music - it gets annoying fast . Their catchiest songs like Sabotage and Fight for your Right, and Intergalactic have been huge - they aren't here. Rating 2. Dont love or hate it. meh

I liked the beats, they were very interesting. I was expecting this to be as horrific as other 80’s attempts of white people rapping, but it works, surprisingly. I think that the album would have been far better served with actual rappers, though. I complained in a previous review about the uninteresting beats in Illmatic: if Nas’ skills had been utilized with these beats, then it would be a 5. But it’s not. 2 or 3 at best. The Beastie Boys should’ve stayed producers. The beats being interesting paradoxically makes the whole album mono-thematic, that theme being shouting. Such a shame.

Everytime I listen to Beastie Boys I always think that they are a parody band for some reason, must be because the multiple singers sound funny to me. All of the songs on this album sound like every Beastie Boys song I have ever heard. Not the biggest fan of them.

To All The Girls- A chill intro to the album, which is most definitely not gonna keep up the chill vibe, but good start (3.5) Shake Your Rump- A mix of many different sounds and samples to create a old style hip hop track (4) Johnny Ryall- The subject of the track has s Johnny Ryall, who is dirt poor and homeless, yet he is a star to his people (3) Egg Man- Another fictional character Beastie Boys made up, as they add wordplay to continue his story (2.5) 3-Minute Rule- A chill beat with the less screaming but more bars (4.5) Hey Ladies- Too much randomness (2) 5-Piece Chicken Dinner- N/A Looking Down the Barrel of A Gun- A deranged song about the bands rise to fame, where they faced many hardships (2) Car Thief- A funky beat where the band raps about the art of car stealing, but don’t actually advocated for it (3.5) What Comes Around- Another witty song about how the world revolves the principle of actions have consequences (4) Shadrach- A song that’s packed with cultures references, probably a tribute (1.5) Ask For Janice- N/A B-Boy Boullibase- N/A Summary: A loud, sound-rich album from Beastie Boys talking about classic stuff in N.Y, just too much screaming; OVERALL: 2/5

I won’t give this 1 star because I think the sampling could be fun and clever at times, but I didn’t like being screamed at for an hour and will never listen to this again.

I am the egg man

These dudes are so fucking annoying. Their whole career seems like a joke that got out of hand.

Forfriskande

BEFORE LISTENING: I have never been a fan of hip-hop. I love albums from all other genres (except maybe jazz but I do like a few songs). The only hip-hop album I have ever enjoyed was, ‘People’s Instinctive Travels…’ by A Tribe Called Quest. I do quite like that song ‘Intergalatic’ by the Beastie Boys though. AFTER LISTENING: After hearing three or four tracks, I was going to switch it off after side A finished. I lasted until the middle of ‘High Plains Drifter’. What on Earth is this crap? This did not change my opinions on hip-hop and is in no way comparable to Sgt. Pepper.

Too much shouting

I definitely understand it’s influence on hip however this was not for me. Pretty much abandoning the rap rock that was on the last album (except for Looking Down the Barrel) and focusing solely on their rapping due to the sparser production; it was not for me. A lot of the lyrics seemed pretty cringy and their vocal style can grate after a while. It also felt overlong. I preferred their debut.

Je m'ennuie profondément

c'est marrant mais pas 50 minutes

Turns out I don't really enjoy the Beastie Boys

Hip-hop. Me ha aburrido un tanto. Un 2.

Very yelly

Hip hop onda Eminem, pero saturador. Me reventó la cabeza. Ruido.

Totaal overprikkeld uitgezet. Beetje schreeuwerig.

Highlights: "Johnny Ryall," "A Year and a Day" This is a step down from Licensed to Ill. Less energy in the beats and the raps. Some more interesting lines and subjects, like in "Johnny Ryall," but this is not sustained. There are samples in here that get a reaction from me even though they're not used the best, going from Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz" to Zapp and Roger, or mashing up Psycho with Jaws. It ends on a high note, realizing its strengths: the blown out 808s on "Hello Brooklyn" sound prescient of the '10s, and the warped chopping of "A Year and a Day" is daring and disorienting in a fun way. Beastie Boys did have a knack for trippy tracks.

It's alright. I got lulled into a false sense of security with the opener before I remembered it was a Beastie Boys album.

Is it me, or does all hip-hop sound the same? The game seems to be to try to spot the sample.

Well. It's good in spots, but very shouty. I've seen them live and enjoyed it more when they were thrashing guitars. This one - I'm just not liking it. Had to listen to it in two shifts cos I was done after a few songs. Good to pick up the samples but it just feels a bit smartarse.

Listened to on 3/21/23 2/5 Favorite song: to all the girls I wish I liked hip hop and this isn’t even the best Beastie Boy album

Too much shouting/noise.

Testing

I was excited when it popped up but was surprised how quickly I tired of it all. To the point where I was a little taken aback by how much I was ready for the album to be over.

Toooooo much shouting

I can appreciate the existence of the Beastie Boys but an entire album is a bit much

It is a cool sound with good rap flow. But the same rapping meters are used over and over again and the beats quickly get stale

I really enjoyed Ill Communication for its jazzy production but I just can't get myself to listen to this thing till the end. Anytime I hear them rap-screaming I see Michael and Dwight from the Office doing a rap video about Scranton.

Vaguely liked the beats and bass, absolutely hated the rest. Got 8 minutes in and skipped the rest of the album. I'm a music person and not a lyrics person and this sounds absolutely terrible. They're screaming the whole album..

Didn't enjoy it

I read someone describe the Beastie Boys as "comically juvenile," and I can't say it any better. The album is catchy and fun. It does very little for me but I understand why it's held in such high regard by so many.

Sorry Beasties, just can’t deal with that nasally, annoying flow. I’m sure this was cool in ‘89 but I couldn’t even make it through the whole thing.

Glad I listened. Won’t really return. Too shout rap-y

the gang vocals start to blend together after awhile. some samples were really cool though.

I noticed I was gradually lowering the voice on my player. But I liked some of the beats and samples.

Some samples, some drumbeats, and shouting - lots and lots of shouting. It gets very boring after a minute or two.

Fun to hear each different voice taking different verses, but still not the biggest hip hop fan

While I respect the Beastie Boys, this was too much of the same throughout, so that was quite the disappointment. I couldn't tell the tracks apart if I had to. But rap/hip hop is one of my least favourite genres anyway, so I might be biased. Still, 2/5.

Another album that passed me by. I think I was put off by all those knock off Parka coats with Paul's Boutique plastered along the tail. No album should be a fashion accessory. I understand the great production and decent use of samples. But I still feel that the Beasties are shouting at me. It's not the best music to listen to alone in isolation on a Monday morning. I bet it makes much more sense in a club with a bunch of mates. But I think I'm past those days now.

Couple of good ones

not a fan

Beastie Boysin tyyli ei vaan oikeen toimi mulle. Ekalla kuuntelulla kaikki biisit kuulosti ihan samalta mut tokalla kuuntelulla alko jo huomaamaan hauskoja ja ihan siistejä juttuja eri biiteissä. Tuotannolle iso plussa mut tää räppityyli kuluu aika nopeesti mun korvissa. Paras biisi: Shake your rump tai Egg Man Huonoin biisi: 3-minute rule

i cannot stand this album

It's just tiring to listen to.

I am not a fan of rap, and this album did not change my mind. There were a few songs with interesting rhythms and sounds, but many of the content themes and lyrics I found distasteful.

not for me : /

Not my type of music

I liked a few songs but didn't love them. The rest fell flat.

Hip-hop. Me ha aburrido un tanto. Un 2.

2/5 nope

Not my favorite Beastie Boys album. I would rather listen to one of the others.

Yea no but like I get why people like it

Not as bad or aggressive as their previous album but this is still far beyond anything I would enjoy as music

Not bad

Fine beastie boys. Probably a 3 in actuality to me, but this doesn't feel super different from the other 2 Beastie Boys albums on this list already? That might be my genre-ignorance showing, but it's how I feel. Rating a low 2.5 purely because I feel like this sound is already featured on the list through the two other beastie boys albums.

Hip hop

This geta similar very quickly. It's someway before their golden era.

Good album

Rating: 4/10

A marginally less annoying rip-off of the Anfield Rap. Needs more Grobbelaar. 1.5/5

Honestly not a big beastie boys fan but I thought it was decent

A bit too chaotic for my tastes.

Uuuurg exhausting

I didn’t care for this album.

Nah, just shouting

It’s Beastie Boys.... it is what it is.

not really my jam

garbage

Too beastlie

couple of ok tracks. most sounded like kids had taken over an open mic night

Was never a beastie boy guy

Good old Beastie Boys

Really not for me

it sounds like a lot of the same to the untrained ear

Let me check… nope, still don’t like hip hop

I don't really like The Beastie Boys and this album is no different

Man, beastie boys are NOT for me

Once again, I am baffled by the amount of positive attention this group receives. Once you've heard one Beastie Boys song it feels like you've heard it all. I love hip hop and rap so this isn't a genre-phobic thing, it feels like there are similar flows and delivery across the entire thing. I will say that the beats are slightly better than Licensed to Ill - I do LOVE sampling - but the repetitiveness drives me up a wall. I'd give 1.5 stars if I could, but very fine with just bumping this down to a solid 1.

Man this grinds on you.

nota: 1 musicas favs: the sound of science, looking down the barrel of gun, a year and day

Much like their debut, I appreciate the sampling. However, unlike their debut, none of these tracks feel particularly compelling. Can hip-hop be progressive? Because this sure sounds like what hip-hop would sound like if it could be progressive. I honestly can't think of a reason to ever listen to this again.

I get that they have have a certain fan base, so there must be something here. Beastie boys are just not my thing. Nails on a chalkboard

1.5/10 The album has been worsening in my esteem since I listened to it approximately 15 hours ago. Also it contains a slur. A few nice beats here and there though. Just not my cup of tea. At all.

Dnf not my thing

I don't understand the love for this band. The voices are annoying. The beats wouldn't exist without those who came before them. No thank you.

yea no

not again….

Not a fan of this. Just felt like a lot of shouting.

i hated every second of it

Dude fuck that album. That shit sucked.

NOT MY STUFF AT ALL

Strong Siund

STOP YELLLING!

The rapping was terrible, especially their singing. The beat wasn’t good, either. I constantly doing myself bored, staring at the sheer amount of horrible songs left. I didn’t wanna do it, but I have to give this a 1.

Hip Hop geht einfach gar nicht.

god awful. i do not enjoy hearing white boys shout rap nonstop for an hour

Horrible. White boys trying to do hip hop
