Reviews (page 10 of 13)

It’s iconic but I don’t know why. It’s very boring.

I'm teetering between a 3 and 4 for this one, which makes me lean towards 3. Towards the higher end of the other I rated a 3 though.

Really great songwriter but just not the strongest singer

Neil Young is hit or miss with me. This album's tracks are also hit or miss. The good songs are pretty good; the rest... meh.

3.5 stars

Heart of Gold, Old Man, and The Needle and the Damage Done are already on my radar but I've never listened to an entire Neil Young album.

I would say I'm about 50/50 on Neil Young; I go for half of what I hear, and then some songs just pass in one ear and out the other. "There's a World," "A Man Needs a Maid" are songs I can do without; "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man" and "Out on the Weekend" are keepers. So I know this is considered one of Neil's best and a classic early entry in the folk-rock genre, but there's plenty of other "classics" that have nothing but winner after winner after winner. I think I like Neil Young most when I can tell he's tapping into something emotionally and that's really coming out in his vocal and the music; sometimes the songs sound like vehicles for a melody or a guitar part.

3 1/2 Sterne.

This was better than the others on this list, by a little bit. 3/5

A little underwhelming for what is considered Young's best album. The A side was remarkably derivative and samey to everything else in his discography. B side was more engaging, but still had filler trappings that left me surprised and let down by the end. Some solid moments, but nothing better than anything else in Young's expansive repertoire. Top tracks: Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done, Words

Very chill while still dramatic somehow? First time really listening to Neil (other than his hits). Think I prefer something more chaotic, but it's nice. Fall vibes. I admit though, Old Man is a classic for a reason (as a Canadian I should show him at least a little appreciation). Nvm, the second half of the album is lowkey redeeming it a little for me... fave = Words I think he's a good musician and it's a decent album that's worth listening to, but not really my taste, too cowboy-esque. Maybe I will try re-listening in the future tho :)

Despite it being sad, I enjoyed this album and it has a few songs that I enjoy listening to regularly. I’m not a huge Neil Young fan, but can appreciate the music. Favorite Song(s): Harvest, Heart Of Gold, Old Man, Alabama

Beautiful but I don’t think I was in the mood for it - I will come back one day and try it again! Obviously heart of gold is always a banger tho

It’s interesting and pretty good but falls short of a 4. Just dosen’t resonate as much with me currently, definitely something I’ll come back to tho

En drös topplåtar, en drös tämligen ordinära och så den jättemärkliga och malplacerade "There's a world". Som album betraktat håller jag både "After the gold rush" och "Everybody knows this is nowhere" högre En plain trea

A-sidan mycket bra förutom den märkliga A man needs a maid.

I think Neil Young wrote an album that his voice was not compatible with. His voice is almost too meek to keep up with the intense orchestral tracks. That said, it wasn’t bad, and I can appreciate the stark difference. Just wish this album had a different singer.

Some great songs on here but it's like ever other Neil Young album to me it's just filled with a lot of boring stuff

*The album got better as it went along- thought the back half had some great tracks. *A lot of songs seemed to have a pretty slow temp that almost dragged *The orchestra was a cool feature.

Hate the maid song love the last song

Not really what I was expecting.

Not a fan of his voice, but I enjoyed the music.

It’s Neil freakin’ Young. It might sound like your average boomer folk album, but do they have songs like Out on the Weekend, Heart of Gold, and Old Man? Yeah, probably. The low points are the orchestrated tracks like A Man Needs a Maid and the unbearable There’s a World, a song perfected by Sufjian Stevens 50 years later. Favorite Tracks: Out on the Weekend, Heart of Gold, Are you Ready for the Country, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done

3 1/2 Stars: The second best Young album featuring 'Harvest' in the title. I almost feel like an appreciation for Neil Young is found in the you-had-to-be-there-in-the-moment. It's a unique voice, but let's face it, not great. The hits here are all-timers, but I almost feel like it's the tracks 'Alabama' or 'Words' are what make the record overall a little more interesting.

Not a great album, but Heath of gold is timeless.

Better than I expected. Never listened to any of these songs before but I liked it more than I thought

The songs I hadn’t heard before were the better ones

This is my 5th Neil Young album and I am 200ish albums in. I'm glad that there are only 4 albums left to be hopefully spread out more over the next 900 albums. This is a good album. I would listen again but I don't believe its extraordinary and probably benefits from having 2 or 3 classic rock radio staples that obscure how average the remainder of the album is compared to other "all time" albums.

Growing up listening to the classic rock radio station, I've heard Heart of Gold to many times. Still not a Neil Young fan. It's not bad, it's very well written but I'm just not a fan of his voice

I relistened to this album through old built-in monitor speakers, and it gave it some of the character it was desperately missing

And I thought I hated Neil Young. Probably a 4 but a star off because it’s Neil Young

Melancholic. I can see why Heart of Gold is the big hit, it's definitely the one that made me perk up a little.

I don't always mesh well with Young's work but then he drops a lyrical goldnugget such as in the needle. It's mixed in with not the greatest vocals and on the previous young album the instrumentals sounded much richer. A lot of stuff that cancels out to an ok rating.

Good, not the kind of country I prefer listening to. 3⭐️

I am not a fan of his and do not love this album, but there are two true classic songs on this album, got to give him that.

I dig Neil Young but I’m not crazy about the orchestral pieces. Kinda wish they were just piano or solo acoustic songs.

Less keen on this one that after the gold rush. There are more huge songs here than there but the package as a whole is better on the former record. This one maybe hits harder in its best moments but the other songs just dont do it for me. Heart if gold and old man are classics and amazing songs. Don't get me wrong. But nothing else has any staying power. Its still a good record but ive already heard better from Mr Young.

Country rock Not my thing 6/10 Heart of gold is a tune. Words sounds rocky Poor lyrics

Not the greatest thing I've listened to. The first half was kinda boring, but the second half was good

Musique pref : "Old man" j'aime bien le riff 3/5

it was alright, I loved the needle and the damage done. But overall a 3/5 album for me

Good album with a few decent tunes, best enjoyed with headphones.

Not really for me but I do recognize it as a classic country folk album. Very easy to listen to but not something that holds my attention.

Little slow for my taste. Heart of Gold is a classic and carries the album

This is probably a 4 after furthing listenings, but it's a 3 after 1 listen. Probably will listen again and enjoy it more.

Overrated

Härligt sound, vissa intressanta låtar som stack ut.

Actually a pretty good album. Surprised me by how much I like it. Heart of gold easily best one. Good mix of guitar styles.

Not my favourite NY album, but still good. Would listen again

Again like just don’t love love Neil young but there are some bangers on this album

I struggled between giving this a 2 or a 3 (not that you give a shit) I hate Neil's high falsetto voice, its annoying. "Out on the Weekend" was decent This album is riddled with rhyme without a reason ie. all of "Heart of Gold" I can't believe that is one of his most popular songs, the lyrics are cheeks

For all the hype I really thought he'd be more to my liking.

I am not a huge fan of Neil Young but you cannot deny his influence on popular music. There are some very memorable songs on this album but there is some fluff as well. Overall it's pretty good. My favorite track is "Out on the Weekend".

My least favorite Neil Young record I've heard so far, but still great!

Words ok

Ekki mikill Youngari en þetta er bara fínt, held að þetta sé vinsælasta platan hans

This should be the last Neil Young album (7! in this list) that I had to endure. A +1 for Heart Of Gold, the rest is meh. -1 for his voice and way of singing.

Man laikam nepatīk country

Thought most of it was just ok despite my love for the harmonica. Would’ve bumped a half star if I were allowed for Heart of Gold, which announces itself as a masterpiece from the opening guitar strum

Easy listening.

Good album with some pretty good hits.

Solid Album

A Man Needs a Maid is a friggin horrible song on so many levels. Which is the thing about Neil Young, since other songs here are pretty much perfect.

yeah it was good

Harmonica bros rise up Slow folk rock Orchestra jumpscare Sad country rock express Country boy going crazy with the orchestra Alone at the bar drinking my sorrows away type beat give the solo guitarist a raise (he lk carried that shit)

I know he's Neil Young and he's the godfather of grunge and everything, but it's just not my thing.

Not a huge Neil guy, a lot of his stuff I don’t get. I do like some of the hits I guess. Always loved “Heart of Gold” & “Old Man” and enjoyed “The Needle & the Damage Done”. Overall the album was better than I expected.

Its another good neil young album but idk i feel like i've heard better from him

esch oki gsi, bezli sexist. chönnt mer weder lose aber au ned unbedingt

this was nice ! i quite like blues music

Another album I ended up liking more than I thought I would. Thanks again, Classic Rock Radio! I don't have a ton to add here. It's light rock with a slight edge to it - enough to spur Lynard Skynard to respond with a diss track. For the record, I believe this is the first time I've listened to "Alabama." Where's the lie, Skynard? Anyway, I've had "Heart of Gold" stuck in my head all day.

I knew a song.

Had to listen to this one twice to really appreciate it. Neil Young really stands alone in musicspace. It's folksy, but not at all with a red state vibe. Lyrics are poetic, and he sounds so sincere. Not my very favorite, but plenty enjoyable.

only neil young song i'd heard prior to this was 'rockin in the free world' so was expecting more of that but was disappointed when it wasn't. i enjoyed some tracks (namely 'old man' and 'a man needs a maid') but kept finding myself getting bored whilst listening to it. i can see why people like it, but the dreary folk/country-style sound and slow tempos isn't really my cup of tea. i did enjoy the intrumentals on tracks like 'a man needs a maid' and 'there's a world' though.

Best commentaire dans un autre review sur 1001AG : " If you don't like this album then you don't like Neil Young. If you like Neil Young this is about as good as it gets."

Late summer, early fall coded.

Country and country-rock usually bore me, and I’ve never been a big fan of Neil Young’s voice, so I was fearing the worst. To my surprise, however, he really makes it work in this album. There’s a very pleasant, laid-back atmosphere throughout Harvest, with a couple of odd tracks that really stand out (in a good way), like There’s A World. Probably not something I’ll listen again, it’s just not my kind of music. But I totally get the vibe. It’s a honest album by a honest singer who never pretends to be something he isn’t.

I accidentally listened to Harvest Moon instead and enjoyed that a lot more! Old man is great but the rest was a bit meh

There are too many Neil Young albums on this list. I think the is the last of them for me and it’s easily the best

"Harvest" is a pretty album, but it might also be the least substantial of Young's classic 70s outputs.

This is a strange one for me, I own this on CD. Usually if I buy it, it is because I know I really like it, and it should be a 4 at a minimum. However, while I could compile a list of Neil Young songs that would be a 4, or more, this album comes up well short. 2.5 rounded up.

Classic Neil Young.

Not really into Neil young but this was a decent listen overall. Alabama was a highlight

Heart of gold

I’m not sure if Neil Young is for me. Maybe I need to give it another listen, but right now, its average road trip music.

Solid Album, but I don‘t get the orchestra Tracks? They feel totally displaced. Fav: Old Man

The best bad singer of his generation Best Song: Old Man Rating: 6.0/10 (Fine) Stars: 3/5

# 524 : Harvest Ranked #72 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time — and it's... fine. The album delivers a solid listening experience with a few standout tracks, including at least one undeniable hit that earns its place in music history. It's fun, enjoyable, and has its moments — but it’s not without flaws. The pacing suffers from filler that stretches the runtime, making it feel a bit bloated. While it’s certainly a good album, it doesn’t quite reach five-star greatness. If I have to pick something off this: Heart of Gold Listened: 15/07/2025

Honestly, it's a little hit and miss for me. There are some truly great songs, but also some low points.

Almost banal at times, and more elaborate at others. A nice listen.

hey google, play some music that entertains and bores me in equal measure, thanks

I feel like the majority of the album was boring, but the last three songs, especially that last one, we're much better

Not my thing but the catcht hits are enjoyable.

There were a couple songs I liked, and a couple I didn't.

I can definitely see why people would love this, and I found it relatively enjoyable. Not enough to bump it to 4* though, with Words, Old Man, and Alabama standing out as very enjoyable.

Harvest, in one word, corny. Not something I would choose to listen to again. The Needle and the Damage Done track, I’ll take that away as a highlight though. 3/5

This was definitely not my genre. There were definitely some nice music there, but I don't know that I'd listen to it again. It did sound newer than the actual age of the album. Almost sounded like Nobuo Uematsu was inspired by this album at times haha. It was all right overall.

Things I was not expecting to hear on a Neil Young album: Battle 2 from FFV. Things I expected to hear, based on other reviews of this album: Neil Young's Kermit the Frog voice. (Sadly, there was no Muppetry here.) Things I did not hear: Any melodic standouts. Disappointing for an album that featured the London Symphony Orchestra on not one, but two tracks. Inoffensive listening for the most part, but I'm actually quite disappointed. Thought I was going to like this one more.

Some good songs and a nice country tone. It is middle-of-the-road as can be, though, and I’m not crazy about the production—very distant sound on most songs. Best song: The Needle and the Damage Done

singer songwriter, 1972 -> 3

Not a bad album. Have heard the ‘hits’ but not the whole album. A little thin for my tastes but I would listen to it again.

I feel the same way about this album as I do about Bob Dylan’s New Morning. They’re both decent soft rock albums with folk leanings and the occasional strange production choice. Neil Young’s distinctive voice isn’t my favorite, and neither are his lyrics, but he manages to overcome both those shortcomings. The two songs that feature orchestral backing are a bit overwrought, but that’s the worst the production has to offer. The tunes are enjoyable on the whole and the playing is rock-solid. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this again soon, but I wouldn’t turn it off if it came on. (Also, the Dolby Atmos mix on Apple Music is incredible.)

This feels like an album made for flannel shirts and early sunsets. It rolls along with harmonicas and banjos doing most of the heavy lifting. Neil's voice hits this nasal register that works better in small doses, I'm not a huge fan. There are classics in here that still sound good today, though the pacing starts to drag around the middle. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Heart of Gold - Old Man - The Needle and the Damage Done

Good album with some great individual songs. Bit slow but enjoyable listen overall. Could well grow on me if I get to give it another chance 7/10

Like it 3/5

not really my thing, a little slow and acoustic for my taste

Not a fan of country but it was a good album. I liked the pretty chill sounds and he harmonica from time to time. Nice :) Favs: 1. You and Me 2. Such a Woman 3. Old King

It’s good. It’s creative. It’s pleasant. I would listen to this again

Fav: Alabama Least Fav: Are You Ready For The Country? It's alright, and that disappoints me. Outside of a couple songs not much really stuck out, unlike some of his other albums

Old man, look at my life I'm a lot like you were

A Man Needs a Maid and There's a World drags it down to a 3.

Meh no era mi flow y no mes gustó mucho

I would like to use this space to retract an earlier album review comment where I mistakenly attributed the popular folk rock song "A Horse with No Name" to singer-songwriter Neil Young.

Noen låter er påler, noen slippes lett. Får tre fordi det er Neil.

I really tried to love this more but it just didn’t hit me as much as I wanted. Found large parts dull and dragged. Couple of highlights in there but certainly not envious of glasto goers

Definitely not unpleasant but quite a few of the songs don’t make me feel anything. Wouldn’t hate to come back to it but there’s other stuff I’d rather listen too. 6/10

Old Man isn't just a classic song, it's timeless. I think Neil Young's voice pairs perfectly with the content of this song. Whereas Heart of Gold has been covered well by other artists, ie Charles Bradley. Overall, this is another album that's so short, only 37 minutes long. But it does flow together decently and has some hits.

Few good songs but kinda so so

The first Neil Young album of many. This is one of those albums that I can absolutely appreciate and understand why someone would adore, but isn’t entirely for me. It’s absolutely beautiful for the first 2/3 of the album, and then the last couple of songs (my favorites of the album) absolutely rock. I personally wish the first half was more like the ladder half, but still appreciate it for what it is as a whole. I hear so much Pearl Jam in this, which makes sense as they call him “Uncle Neil”, and I can really understand why. For instance, I know Neil Young didn’t invent the harmonica, but whenever it gets played on this album I just think “Wow, that reminds me of Pearl Jam.” This is as close to a 4 star album as you can possibly get for me. A very solid 3.9/5. My favorite songs here are “Old Man”, “Alabama”, and “Words (Between the Lines of Age)”.

All songs were good here. Some good and varied instrumentals as well. Although nothing I feel like I need to back to, this feels like the best of this series so far.

Trying so so hard to like this. The first half is great, and there are the couple classics, but the last half isn't doing it for me...

Going into this 1001 albums list, I had certain thoughts about certain artists. Actually sitting down and listening to albums from them: sometimes it changes my opinion on them. Dylan for example; I grew to like a whole lot more. Neil Young isn’t one of those artists. I didn’t care for him going in, and after listening to this album, I still don’t. Heart of Gold is an undeniably great song, but that’s about it for me. It’s not bad, but I don’t particularly care for this thing.

Nothing mindblowing. Heart of gold is pretty good

Good Lord. A Neil Young album I sat through all the way through, will miracles never cease? You're here for Needle and the Damage Done, aren't you, yes you are, but you'll have to be patient (it's the second last track). But don't despair, Heart of Gold is there in all its glory too, and there are some other fine tunes to hold your auditory system's attention before you get there.

Another album where the musician is an accomplished songwriter and incredibly talented. But, I can’t stand his voice. The only song I can tolerate is “Rockin in the Free World”.

It’s precisely the qualities of Neil’s voice which make songs like Harvest Moon so good, but songs like A Man Needs a Maid and There’s a World so unbearable: a timid, slightly struggled vocal delivery. The first three tracks go from dreary to drearier before resuscitating you with Heart of Gold (Cash version still better). Are You Ready for the Country is… fine as far as Blues tracks go, before giving you Old Man, the other standout track on this album. I had way higher hopes for this record and I really didn’t come away with a greater appreciation for Young’s composition. Sorry but… this is a 5/10 Favourite track: Old Man Most Hated Track: There’s a World

of all the singer songwriter releases ive ever been forced to listen to, this is one of the more bearable ones. i still think that the genre is boring and derivative and highly uninspired but this makes for fine living room music when you have guests over i guess. i just wish these boring white men would get some musicality behind their admittedly good lyricism and songwriting

Not bad Neil, not bad. Not good enough for me to put any of your tracks in my monthly playlist with the exception of a Man needs a maid. But definitely not a bad album. 7/10

sweet album except that one song that made me kinda scared

His songwriting is so awesome, but it’s hard for me to get into his voice. I was SHOCKED when There’s a World started playing, I actually thought I had queued up a random song by someone else. That one really took me out of the album as a whole, and I think it was the most difficult instrumental for me to enjoy with his voice. It was fun to finally listen to a Neil Young album. He’s one of my mom’s favorites, so I grew up hearing a ton of songs and probably some albums without knowing, but I had never sat down and listened to an album all the way through intentionally.

downloaded 1,4,6,8. decent

Out on the Weekend is a pleasant song with some nice harmonica. Harvest is a chill folksy song with good steel guitar. A Man needs a Main is a pleasant piano and orchestra ballad. Unexpected after the first 2 songs but good. Heart of Gold is really good and one of the singles that's kind of recognizable. Are you ready for the country? sounds like an Elton John song. Old man is one of the hits but isn't very good. There's a world is good; a dramatic orchestral song. Alabama sucks, the song does too. Last two songs meh. Album is great musically but the vocals never changed very much at all and sounded kind of hollow/whiney.

Out of all the Neil Young albums I've had to listen to so far, this is the most tolerable.

I suppose I’ll go back and listen to this again to focus on the lyrics. Musically it’s pretty dull on first listen. Trying to go classical with “There’s a World” really did not pay off. Ok did the lyrics review. Fortunately “Old Man”balanced out the drivel of “A Man Needs a Maid”. And now I finally know what Lynyrd Skynyrd were so upset about. This one’s a 2.5 for me. Heart of Gold, Old Man, and The Needle and The Damage Done will probably get me to give it a three.

The Strokes - This Is It Great Album, 8.5/10. Nice Rock listen. Can tell it inspired many bands like The Black Keys. Favorite Songs: Someday, Late Nite Neil Young - Harvest Not my style, 6.5/10. I can understand why it is appreciated musically, but I’m not a huge fan of his voice.

neil young! i get it...3 stars because he made harvest moon (even though it's not on this album)

not bad, easy to listen to while applying for a job

I can respect it but it's not my jam.

Off the cuff remark: never quite got Neil Young. Same with Harvest. Some creaky rhymes in places don't help. Undoubtedly some nice riffs in there. Standout track: Old Man Revisit?: Yes, which says a lot. But expect it will be another attempt to fathom why he is so loved.

Bet this will be rated high but I found it meh

i will enjoy this when i am 65

I bought this album on CD at Costco when I was in high school. It was my first Neil Young album. I have some nostalgia for it because of that, but it’s by no means my favorite. Not one I revisit, but it’s solid from an album standpoint I suppose.

nice country-ish tunes from Ol'Shakey

Quite emotive stuff, really unique

I love the remastering, what a beautiful clear and bright sound! I'm just not a big fan of the voice and accent.

Decent, iconic folk album. Not one I'd listen to frequently, though.

Ehh, it’s alright. Not a big Neil Young guy. 2.5 ⭐️ rounding up because 🤷🏻‍♂️

Some bangers and some stuff I didn’t love because it felt like the vibe was jumping around.

Pretty good! Love a little harmonica action

Classic Album Didn't listen Big fan of it and heard it before

It was alright.

I think I liked it. I love Neil Young. This was quite an eclectic mix of songs. Some of them sound like show tunes. A bit to many frills for me. But I admire the bravery to try some different stuff out.

Décent album with a couple of bangers (Heartbreak of Gold, Words, Old Man). I don’t mind Neil Young’s voice, but it doesn’t have the strength to carry songs like A Man Needs a Maid. Slightly boring overall

Only a couple of songs stand out , otherwise a bit meh

It was okay!

Heart of Gold komt me in elk geval meteen bekend voor. Ja weet niet man... Sorry! FAVO: Out on the weekend, Heart of Gold, Old Man, Words between the lines of age

Again, a fine americana album. Nothing groundbreaking

Not unpleasant but a bit middle of the road for me

Early Days Very distinct memory of hearing the opening chords to Heart of Gold in the early 90s and thinking this is the real shit, like REM or Tom Petty. Today Man what on earth was the trend then with the orchestral whatnot? At least with Scott Walker he had an arranger/composer who was on his wavelength and could subvert the conventions of the format, but this shit, woof. Neil’s early solo work (so, up to Harvest) often has this adult-contemporary/singer-songwriter feel to it that creeps in (which apparently made him quite successful so hey!), but I mostly vibe to the Ditch Trilogy and CH stuff (although I like Harvest Moon a bunch?). His thin voice breaking through the cacophony - or situated against a single guitar - is the sweet spot for me, whereas carrying an entire orchestra feels pretty silly. Keepers: Heart of Gold, Words

I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to this record front to back before. I never had a Neil Young phase, and my parents were older so this wasn’t their music either. All to say Neil Young has always existed at the periphery of my music listening. I like most of what I’ve heard but never enough to do a deep dive. The hits still hit - Heart of Gold, Old Man, Harvest, Needle - but wow, there was quite a bit on this that was strikingly not for me. What’s with all the Andrew Lloyd Weber shit (A Man Needs a Maid, There’s a World)? YIKES. With his reedy voice, it sounds like a live recording of a high school musical. Is Neil always this scattershot? Not sure I need to come back to this one beyond the singles. Words might be the only thing new to me here that I’d want to spend more time with.

Not a bad album. He knows how to write some bummer songs. But also wtf is A Man Needs a Maid? C'mon Neil.

i mean it was nice i guess?

it's nice, but I'm not in love with anything. and not in the mood for this country americana vibe at almost any point

Pretty good but not a lot of songs?

I actually did enjoy Mr Young this time around. Having the symphony arrangements seemed a little weird at first (I don’t think in any of his previous ones has he played with a symphony before) but I settled into it by the end. Still not much to write home about but it was decent easy listening.

I really think that if we had this Neil Young album before the like eleven others we seemingly had, I’d have a different opinion of his music. There are a couple all-time hits on this album, but they’re also the ones I was waiting for from him because it’s all I really knew. The album has great composition and is well put together, but even after his most well-known album I don’t really see the hype. Good enough for a three, but I can’t really go any higher.

Some songs I like but I haven’t clicked with NY.

Considering how the album cover is what I picture when someone says Neil Young, I thought I would know more songs from this album. Alas, all my other NY reviews stand and his voice just doesn't work for me most of the time.

I don't know... maybe I'm not in the right state of mind for this, but it was just fine. Kind of too whiny for my tastes. Of the songs I've heard from this album I've heard them all too many times and the ones I hadn't didn't really grab me. I enjoyed Rust Never Sleeps and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere much more.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as I anticipated.

nice i fell asleep to this

Better than his last one. This one least had some melodies. I’m still not seeing what everyone else sees, though.

good one

Neil Young's voice = bad. Music minus vocals = good.

This would be a really good album if anybody else was singing. I bet there are some good covers of these songs. Old Man and Heart of Gold are pretty decent songs.

It's good, but just has some strange decisions. Why did you bring in a symphony for two tracks? Why did you throw in one live track and not either cut or fade out the clapping? Hard to listen to as a collective album, but not bad as individual songs. I'm sure my rating on this album will improve as I listen to the six other Neil Young albums on this baffling list.

3.5/5 Wel goeie classic vibes

Not my favorite.

This was ok - some catchy melodies but the country/folk style isn't really my thing. Having said that, it's one of the better albums in that style that I've had. Not bad.

pretty good

My favourite Neil Young on this list so far. A bigger sound, not just a band, sounds orchestral. I still find his whiny voice to be the worst part of his music. Still a good listen. Favourite track: A Man Needs a Maid.

This was pretty good! Only thing keeping from being a 5 is a couple tracks and the overall feeling, but if this came on again I wouldn't skip it. I'm from the South so this one feels like home to me.

Just ok. There are some standouts there, but most of the album is a little bit tedious.

I think this is the first one I know nothing of beyond Neil Young's name. Ten songs is a blessed relief after what happened to me yesterday. Also disclaimer I'm listening on my phone speaker bc my headphones aren't working I do love a harmonica. Oh this is nice. I wanna drive round in the sunshine to this. There's a World is a bit much i didn't care for that one. I don't have a lot to say lol it's decent but not really my bag overall. Like straight down the line nothing I really disliked nothing that stood out particularly. Just kinda nice idk. Preferred the first half. Maybe 'in bed ill at 7 on a sunday' is just the wrong context to appreciate it idk. I'm letting it repeat tho so what does that say. I do not know how to rate this. 3 it is.

Solid album.

I was expecting to like it more than I did.

Well it’s a Neil Young record. I had heard the big songs on here (Heart of Gold, Old Man) but not the rest. It’s mostly what you’d expect; I still don’t quite get the reverence afforded to the artist. He’s got a unique voice but the music is pretty bland and the performance is nothing special. Also what the hell is “a man needs a maid” about if not a literal desire to have a maid? Maybe I’m too dumb for this.

Neil Young hooked me in! I don't always care for his brand of music, and sometimes I'm not sure how he's all over the 1001 albums project when a lot of his music sounds the same. Happily, I did find a lot of differences in Harvest, which enabled me to enjoy this much more than otherwise. Instead of relying only on his guitar, he used the piano frequently, and boy am I a sucker for that. A listen I enjoyed several times. 3.5

A very chill, solid album from Neil Young. Honestly, we've had so many Neil Young albums on this project, I've run out of things to say about him and his music. I didn't really think myself much of a Neil Young fan prior to this project, but I will say that I have come to appreciate his body of work more.

Lovely, would relisten

I really don't like Neil Young's voice. But there are some great tracks on this record. Listened 3 times, got better with every listen. Might have to make this 4 stars in the future.

Pleasantly surprised, had fun with this one. Started out great, Out On The Weekend was a lot of fun. The guitar work and harmonica sounds throughout the whole album are really nice. A Man Needs A Maid was pretty bad, but then we picked right back up with the great Heart Of Gold. The rest of the album flowed along nicely. Best song: Heart Of Gold

It was alright

Nice country vibes, 7.5/10

I do like Neil Young although listening to a couple in close succession dilutes the experience somewhat. I don't think that a single artist should have so many entries in the list. Old Man and Heart of Gold are standouts, but now I have had enough.

Not his best but dome good songs on here a little forgettable but worth a revisit

Back half better than first half

It was okay. Not sure I see what makes this part of 1001.

At the start of the album: I used to love this LP but why ? At the end of the album: Yes I still love it because it’s honest, not so raw as it is a bit over-produced at some points…but it manages to be moving.

Couple good songs. Inconsistent sound throughout the album can be quite jarring.

Folk rock legend. Another album from the 70s with a few hits a few decent songs and filler that is easy to listen to.

It’s probably his best album.

My favorite kind of country/folk but not something I can spend too much time listening to.

Impressive album I only knew from the hit singles. Although it is slow, it is okay. 3/5

Not awful but not brilliant. I’d listen to it again, but it’s also defiantly not what I’m used to with Neil Young.

Old Man and Heart of Gold classics. The rest of the album OK. Down beat and a bit depressing.

Better than anticipated. I can actually handle Neil Young which I never thought I could

at least this one had the big song on it!

Typical Neil Young, some cool songs but generally just ok

Probably 3 stars. Not a big fan of this particular collection

I really wanted to not like this album because of Neil young's opinions of the South, but I do like it. So it gets a one star deduction for Antebellum

I tried REALLY hard with this album. 4 listens. The first 3 tracks are a dirge, Album doesn't really start until Heart of Gold which, with Old Man are by far the best tracks. Side two drags the album up to a 3. Pleasant background music, but just too much country lap steel guitar and harmonica for me (yes I know Heart of Gold has it - but it's such a great song)

Heart of Gold’s a classic 5/5 tune. Old Man too. I stand by my judgment that his voice is only middling, though better on this album than the first. 3.5/5

3 stars but really because of 2 songs

I liked the beats and the music but I didn't like his voice. some songs were nice

Neil (without crazy horse) just doesn’t do it for me

Maybe my favorite Neil Young album for the hits and grand instrumentation but that is not saying much as I'm not a big fan of his I guess.

Meh. Loved heart of gold

Despite not liking his voice it was not as hard a listen as I was expecting

This album was overall pleasant, but forgettable. I liked Old Man but the rest of the songs didn't stand out.

i like the country feel with the occasional banjo. i also like that it’s not too country ish, i don’t tend to like mainstream country. i don’t actually know what genre this is and it’d be early country if it qualifies as country at all.

Great songwriter and it is easy to understand why this album resonates with people. Not my first time listening to it, and I want to like it more than I do. Not my favorite voice, but an interesting album and not a bad listen.

It was just okay for me. None of the tracks really grabbed me.

Overall enjoyed this a lot more than I thought, although it's still not really my thing. Standout Track: Heart of Gold

Heart of Gold was nice. Good harmonica. Strong instrumental. Like Old Man, too. Good country twang, nice vocals. There's a World makes me think of Hot in Herre by Nelly though, and I can't get over it. Fav Tracks: Old Man Least Fav: N/A

Heart of Gold, Old Man, Alabama, and Words are fantastic. The rest I feel very meh about overall.

I like him better with his group but there were some songs on there I loved.

I feel like Neil Young can write a banger every now and again.

Fine I guess

I think Neil Young is just okay

This was good, his voice is weird

Rejected

Laid back easy listen that my mum would love. Sadly not for me.

Actually quite enjoyed, nice start to the day

For me, the sixth-former lyrics don't match the quality of the tunes. But somehow he is still an endearing presence and there are a couple of great songs. Enjoyed listening to Le Noise afterwards. Much better imho

Not a fan of “Every man needs a maid”

Torn on this one, I did want to really love this. There were some stand out tracks, and some heavy lyrics. But Neil’s voice sounded drowned out on some of the tracks and pretty forgettable. Maybe one to revisit at some stage.

Fall vibes. Why orchestra in man needs a maid go so hard

I'll listen to this again, I really enjoyed the last song on this album. It took a bit for me to gel with it.

Mostly gems but a couple disasters (A Man Needs a Maid!).

Was the 1001 Albums book sponsored by Neil Young? One great song on here (Harvest), the rest are somewhere between good and boring.

good folk/rock album

***An ok album. Gets draggy on some tracks, some tracks sound alike.

If it weren't so sad and depressing...

Not my favorite

He sings like he is trying to use his inside voice while being shaken. I’ve heard two of these songs while shopping for groceries. Perfectly suitable country/rock 70s music that I really don’t have a big opinion on. 5/10

Well I didn't hate it, it had some nice songs on it that I enjoyed, but a lot that I forget instantly.

Because 1001 Albums You Dhould Hear Before You Die should be named All 70s Wll The Time, of course it’s Neil Young. That said, I *think* I like Neil Young, so I’m cautiously optimistic. Out on the Weekend had some slide guitar and a hint of strangeness twangy-ness that makes too country-adjacent for my tastes. This isn’t starting well. Harvest sounds even more country-ish. This does not bode well. A Man Needs A Maid is oddly named, but not country, so massive improvement. Sadly, the song - lyrically *and* musically, is just as bizarre as the name. Not great. The rest of the album is kind of the same. Some good (Old Man is FANTASTIC), some not so good. 3 stars, but overall, I think it diminished my opinion of Neil Young.

oldman and HOG are great, rest were just OK

After the Gold Rush > Harvest

Old Man rules. But Neil Young is not my guy. Change his voice.

Side one 1. "Out on the Weekend" 3,3 2. "Harvest" 3,6 3. "A Man Needs a Maid" 3,3 4. "Heart of Gold" 3,8 5. "Are You Ready for the Country?" 3,3 Side two "Old Man" 3,7 "There's a World" 3 "Alabama" 3,4 "The Needle and the Damage Done" 3,4 "Words (Between the Lines of Age)" 3,7 Average 3,45

Good stuff. A number of classics. Doesn't hit hard enough for me to go higher than 3/5 though.

Albumi #77, 13.10.2024 Neil Youngin neljäs albumi vuodelta 1972 lienee artistin menestynein ja arvostetuin. Albumilla esiintyy runsaasti vierailevia muusikoita. Albumilta löytyy parikin Youngin signatuurikappaletta: "Heart of Gold" ja "The Needle and the Damage Done". Mielenkiintoisena yksityiskohtana mainittakoon kappale "Alabama", joka aiemmalla Youngin albumilla julkaistun "Southern Man"in ohella maalailee Yhdysvaltojen etelävaltioista yksipuolisen verisen kuvan orjuusvuosien takia. Tähän vastauksena syntyi pari vuotta myöhemmin Lynyrd Skynyrdin loistava kappale "Sweet Home Alabama", joka ottaa kantaa Youngin tarpeettoman laveaan etelän osavaltioiden mustamaalaamiseen.

Good vibes

Canzone preferita: out on the weekend

I like this the most from neil youngs music yet. feels like a cinematic folk country driven cowboy movie in the desert. enjoyed this listen (3.5/5.0)

I like the popular tracks: Heart of Gold, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done. I don't pay as much attention to lyrics normally but I'm annoyed with A Man Needs a Maid. I don't love Neil Young's voice, but there's enough here musically to get over that.

There are some classic Neil Young songs on this, but maybe an equal number of cringey ones or songs that fall flat.

surprisingly rich and diverse, still not my taste but i guess i'm getting old...

Two songs are iconic, the others quite similiar to each other. Too country, too american

too U.S. boring

Good album. Enjoyed this

He has beautiful and interesting songs.

Neil Young has a voice that can get a bit grating after awhile, but overall, I thought this was pretty good. A few quality classics on here, and gotta love the harmonica. Though I like Dylan’s harmonica sounds a little better. Super chill vibes. The one song I really didn’t care for was A Man Needs a Maid.

I was happy to see this album pop up as my first selection because it takes me right back to college. Nowadays, as an ol’ man, I like Nirvana Unplugged a little more but damn this is still a great album. Had forgotten parts of it, so it was great to listen the whole thing again. Definitely a great album, one of the best from the early 90s.

Huh, this is Neil Young? It's all... perfectly okay.

Háttérzenének elmegy, de tökéletesen nem tudott meghatni.

Überraschende Musical artige Songs dabei. Entspannend, folky.

Pretty good but at the same time felt fairly underwhelming. Low 3.

This is not my type of music, I find it too stale, that being said, Neil still finds a way to elevate this stale music, not a lot as to make me want to come back to it, but just enough to make it an above average listening experience

Harvest is quite the good album if i do say so myself. The album mostly either had songs that heavily utilized a soft acoustic guitar, ones that used a somewhat heavier guitar (those ones were my favorites by the way), and ones with a more whimsical sounding style. Young's vocals were solid as well, with me remembering the vocals from Old Man being sampled in a Redlight King song with the same name (even if they aren't sampled there, they still sound eerily similar). The album also never really had a bad song which is a major plus. This is a pretty solid album that's well worth a listen. Best Song: Alabama Worst Song: There's a World

Great album. 2 of his biggest songs he has done.

whilst i can appreciate this album musically, and understand its prominence, i don’t think the sound is really for me. specifically the first half of the album i found quite slow, with quite generic songs, whilst the second half had more variety, and i could get myself stuck into the songs more. if you are a fan of this style, then i can see the appeal of the record, but it just doesn’t fully click with me.

There is something special about Neil Young that just makes me really like his music, even though a lot of this album was very country. That's saying something! I'd probably rate this generally lower than the others of his I've listened to so far but there were some really good tracks. Fave Track: Words (Between the Lines of Age) Rating: 3

Not my favourite album by Neil, it's a bit toned down compared to rest of his discography. Very artistic, for sure, but I just found it too boring and uneventful.
