Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Nice one to start with. Some songs are brilliant, some not so much and a little inconsistent. But overall very lovely.
A good country- /folk-rock album. You can feel the melancholy. (8/10) Favorite Tracks : Out on the Weekend, Heart of Gold, The needle and the Damage Done
7.5
aside from a man needs a maid and there's a world this album is phenomenal.
8.1/10.
im a real cunt-ry boy
great album. Bought this back in the 70's shortly after it was released and it has held up well
Chilled, very 70s Almost deserves 5 stars on Heart of Gold alone... Good album overall with a few shaky songs
A classic, but hardly one of Neil Young's great albums. _Everybody Knows this is Nowhere_, _Tonight's the Night_ and _After the Gold Rush_ are all better.
Actually pretty good, soft rock vibe.
Classic country rock; softer than Neil would go on to write, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Some absolutely amazing tracks in there. Have heard many before but never actively listened to the album straight through. Really liked A Man Needs a Maid, and the obvious ones like Old Man and Heart of Gold. Will take away one star just because he plays it quite safe overall and doesn't do anything too unexpected.
Folk/Country/Rock vibes. Loved the amount of foot tapping and head bobbing songs. Worth another listen
A lot of hits on this one, so picking a favorite is tough. Masterful song writing, deceptively simple guitar, unexpected orchestral flourishes, and a voice that grows on you.
Easy listening and some absolute classics that haven't aged. Very enjoyable
Haven't listened to Neil Young much but really enjoyed the album
Good
Really liked
Great album but not quite as good as After the Gold Rush. Lyrically A Man Needs a Maid is questionable. Favorite songs Heart of Gold and The Needle and the Damage Done.
The gold standard of classic country. It moves from swaths of orchestral composition to guitar heavy country rock. Favorite song: Old Man, Alabama, Heart Of Gold
Excellent and poignant folk rock. Very close to a 5 here.
Classic mellow album
I have never properly listened to Neil Young and I enjoyed this album more than I expected at the start
Is er een verborgen boodschap aan A man needs a maid, want vreemd nummer. Old Man is wel heel goed.
Mooi album, tophits 'Old Man' en 'Hard of Gold'.
Känns lovande, lyssnar redan på heart of gold. Harvest är oxå härlig. A man needs a maid är ju ganska questionable tho wtf?
MOR country. Strong set if occasionally ruined by the over produced string sections. But we wouldn't have the genius "ditch trilogy" if it wasn't for this album, so I can't really complain. BT: Heart of Gold, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done
Country rockero, me encanta
All time classic
I need to listen again
Classic rock is classic
Beautiful
Album was surprisingly good. I would definitely relisten in the future.
Love this album and glad I only recently discovered it!
Neil Young provided me with a welcome blast of nostalgia. He is my dads favourite artist and while I'm not familiar with all of his songs there are many that brings back memories of my childhood with my dad. I am getting married next year and plan to dance with my dad to a Neil Young song.
In truth a patchy album master by some plodding (not to mention pompous) nonsense. But the great stuff is so great.
Very good country rock album, but not something I would come back to often. Heart Of Gold and Old Man are amazing, but the rest is still solid.
Old Man and Heart of Gold are great songs.
Some nice folk/country vibes. The inclusion of orchestral instruments in a couple songs was a nice touch. Old Man is catchy af.
Very good
Love me some Neil!
Not my favorite Neil Young album but you can't go wrong with the stuff from around this time of his career.
gemütlich
Enjoyable, knew more songs than I thought I did.
Nice mellow country vibes, not what I was expecting. Enjoyed it.
Couple good ones, rest was meh
Heard a few songs before. I enjoy the simple melodies of this album. Good lyrics though
I didn't know this album had two really well-known songs on it and I thoroughly enjoyed this album
An ambitious project with some killer collaborations. Best track: Heart of Gold
1972. Key Songs: Heart of Gold, Old Man, There's A World
Effet de simple exposition-ed
Great album, three lovely stars. I still often smile at the memory of the “Heart of Gold” busking moment right at the start of my caring career. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Tom.
I think this album sounds stunning. It's a little bit more country leaning than truly rock, but I like the rock instruments in this setting, because the bass is very strong (a personal preference of mine). It alternates between a very rustic sound and and a theatrical one, but somehow it works. The final song Words is a really fantastic unique song that highlights the rock elements well. Though it was a very mellow, country rock album, which isn't my style, I kinda liked it. Probably wouldn't listen to the whole piece through again, though.
A pretty good Neil Young album. Probably my second favorite one after After the Gold Rush. Still I don't think I'll ever become a big Young fan, but he's definitely leaps and bounds above the rest of his 70's folk-y peers. This one, in particular, has two songs my mother really loves, "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man". I always think about her when I listen to them. Key tracks: Heart of Gold Old Man
The more stripped down country ish cuts don't really do it for me but when there's some orchestration and big musical crescendos, it really soars. Strong 3
Heart of gold 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Man needs a maid 👎🏻👎🏻 Are you ready for the country 👍🏻 Old man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Theres a world 👎🏻👍🏻 Alabama 👍🏻👍🏻(👍🏻) The. Needle and the damage done 👍🏻 Words between the lines of age 👍🏻👍🏻
Snare is too sharp, otherwise nice songs with some interesting Americana elements and banjo, favourite is probably Out on the Weekend, Words, Heart of Gold and Old Man. Would give 3.5
Pretty good but a bit samey and nothing that really stood out for me.
Sheesh, surely we’ve had Neil Young’s entire catalog at this point. Decent album for my tastes. Heart of Gold and Old Man are solid (most recognizable for a reason). Why is Neil singing to try to justify wanting a house keeper 🤣 But yeah, this is middle of the road for me.
Well I had been anticipating this album for awhile. I knew it would be on the list cause it’s just one of those albums that’s EVERYWHERE. And maybe that’s part of the problem, maybe I got my hopes too high. But I did find most of this album to be underwhelming. I’m not one of those people that hate his voice, I can appreciate his voice. But i definitely didn’t love this album the way I loved “Ragged glory”. I definitely lean towards rock music in any given situation, and I’m not trying to say this needed to be a rock album, I just needed alittle more variety as a whole. The songs I liked and saved were “old man”, “the needle and the damage done” and “words”. All great songs, and I didn’t hate the song Harvest. I just thought the album, including the title track, were alittle slow and dry.
decent, nothing stands out to me except the ending songs.
sure does sound like an album you'd listen to in the fall, with music and everything
This was a mixed bag for me. Out on the Weekend and Alabama are both outstanding, Words, Old Man and Heart of Gold are very good. A Man Needs a Maid and Needle just sound strange — orchestra strings don’t really work with Young’s whole vibe.
Pre-bed skim: drums are crisp, surely they've been sampled There’s A World is Hot In Herre and that has ruined the song for me Heart of Gold stood out so far. The guitar and drums are great but I’m torn on his singing, this guy is a CROONER I am not a fan of the orchestra tracks, and that appears to be a shared opinion. As a North Carolinian? I think I get what he's going for here Old Man was really good. Familiar too Words has good lyrics and the guitar sounds great, but it doesn't really *DO* it for me going back Out on the Weekend would be so great if I was fawning over somebody... which I am not atm. The guitar slides (idk what instrument that is. steel slide?) are fun and not overdone like a modern country track; some reverberated plucks during the harmonica solo that give the whole thing some character. I liked that song man I love the melody/vocals in Harvest. It sounds so woeful. Love love love the inflection he hits on the third word in each line/"dream up". It tickles something in my brain. Will I see you give more than I can take? Will I only harvest some? As the days fly past will we lose our grap, or fuse it in the sun? :'( A Man Needs a Maid was boring. I like the lyrics, although I wonder if I'm interpreting them correctly. Too slow, and the orchestra swell is corny. Who put these bells here? Heart of Gold is good shit man. The guitars are strong and his melody just starts off perfect. Bro was singing about getting old at 26 I get it Neil. Am I ready for the country??? I liked this track this morning so apparently I am. Killer guitar solo Old Man is great. There's that steel slide again SO HOT IN!!! SO HOT IN HERREEEEE. WITH A LITTLE BITTA UH UH Don't like that song, sorry London Symphony Orchestra Alabama is great. I don't have much to say about it? It's just kind of pretty damn good. Guitar is excellent, chorus is fun, Louisiana is still cooler. The Needle and the Damage Done isn't a song I'm a huge fan of sonically, but I loooooove the lyrics. I've seen the needle and the damage done, a little part of it in everyone... but every junkie's like a setting sun Words is epic. Great guitar guitar was great, lyrics were ok, didn't like his voice It's good but it's not my thing. 6 Favorite: Harvest Least favorite: A Man Needs a Maid mentions: Words and Alabama
A little too slow and mellow for my tastes but need to give credit where it's due. Neil Young is one of the godfathers. "Old Man" is simply amazing.
6/10
Quite a nice listen. The voice is a bit of an acquired taste but one that's grown on me throughout this list. Enjoyed this more than Rust Never Sleeps, with Heart of Gold being the standout track for me.
Cursed with knowledge that he sounds like Kermit
I liked this better than the last Neil Young album I got from this list. Unfortunately, the last album was 3 days ago. And I think I need a bit more of a break from Neil Young.
Some classic low key bangers on this one.
Neil Young - Harvest ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Album #6 for me, and it’s the best one so far. I’m not always a huge fan of slow, downbeat music, which has been a problem with the project so far for me. I’m certainly familiar with this album’s existence, but I’ve never listened to it before. I have heard a couple of the songs. It’s a strong collection for sure, but just a little too down tempo for my tastes (mostly). I do plan to listen to it again someday, which I will not being doing with any of the other choices provided so far.
I found this album to be a rather introspective folk journey. The lyrics were the highlight. Neil Young's vocal delivery was confident and served the purpose. The songs are layered and contain variety of instruments without really losing the main motives. The only real drawback is my subjective view on using the harmonica as prominently as it is featured here. To me it just sounds out of place. I liked "Harvest" and "Old Man".
I know "Heart of Gold". And I know of Neil Young's legacy. Excited for this! First song is a slow burner, and I its development. Nice Title track is good too. But nothing has wowed me so far. A Man Needs a Maid is interesting. Heart of Gold is a classic. Not much to add. Are You Ready For the Country is cool. Love the weird percussion I didn't know Old Man, but it is one of the best songs I've gotten to know through this project. So simple, yet so effective. Just beautiful. There's a World seems like a charity anthem. Not too effective. Alabama exists. The Needle and The Damage done succeeds despite being the least complex. Sometimes a guitar and some good lyrics is all you need. Words was a surprise. I do not care about the fact that it sounds unrelated to the rest of the record, it is one hell of a song, and one hell of a closer. It just sounds epic (and I hate using that word to describe a song). Hell yeah. So, those last two songs may have shifted the way I view the whole album. But as a complete body of work, besides the three most famous songs (and Words, don't forget about that), this just did not meet my expectations. Which is fine, as those expectations were my fault to begin with, but I can't help but feel like the deep cuts here are just forgettable. Not bad, but not amazing either. Still a good time, and I can see myself liking it much more with further listens.
It's fine. I'm not relistening to it but I didn't dislike it actively?
Good but not my sound
*Harvest* remains a quintessential slice of 1970s folk-rock, balancing moments of absolute brilliance with a few tracks that feel like period-piece oddities. While songs like "Heart of Gold" and the hauntingly earnest "The Needle and the Damage Done" highlight Neil Young’s mastery of melody and poignant storytelling, the album is undeniably hit-or-miss; tracks like "A Man Needs a Maid" feature stunning arrangements that are occasionally undermined by lyrics that haven't aged gracefully, while other cuts feel like filler compared to the record's high-water marks. Ultimately, the album succeeds due to its warm, organic production and the unique closing track "Words," which showcases a compelling, psychedelic-tinged complexity that elevates the final listening experience beyond a standard folk offering.
3.5/5 I appreciate the artistry and vulnerability but this just didn’t click with me
Neil Young is not one of my favorites, so this isn't the best start. I'm glad I listened to this all the way through and it's fine, but it didn't convert me.
Enjoyed but not very exciting
IDK man my ex was way too into this for me to really tap in but yeah I guess it's good.
Nie moj styl. Ale dało się przesłuchać bez bolu.
Folk/Country Rock. Favorite Songs: Harvest, Are You Ready for the Country, Old Man, There’s a World, The Needle and the Damage Done Least Favorite: A Man Needs a Maid Notes: Started out slow, then picks it up again. There’s twang on the guitars with songs like Heart of Gold. While there’s a good selection of songs here, and while I did decide to grab the full album for my personal collection, there’s a few that I might be skipping depending on my mood. 7/10
Harvest was definitely a better album than On the Beach and by quite a bit too. I think all the songs were a big step up and just better made. Top three: A Man Needs a Maid, Out on the Weekend, Alabama
I liked this better than the other Neil Young album I've heard. Some pretty decent tunes on here.
It was okay even though I don’t like the country vibe and every song kind of sounded the same
This was apparently a massive hit and I can see why. The record is recorded in a few locations, from Nashville to London and Southern California. The Nashville material unsurprisingly brings a country tinged inflection to Young's sound, which works fairly well. The London tracks are with an orchestra and are probably my least favorite. "A Man Needs A Maid" is particularly overwrought, but "There's a World" works a bit better. Alabama Man's lyrics may have been a bit ill conceived as Young himself says, but it holds up pretty well as a song. The hits on this record are easily understandable as hits but don't particularly move me. That might be a product of hearing them so often, so I see this as more of a me issue. On the other hand, my favorite part of the record comes with the last two songs. "The Needle and the Damage Done" is a beautiful solo track and captures the sense of tragedy that is attempting to represent. The transition into "Words (Between the Lines of Age) is really spectacular and its almost as if the emotion of the first songs explodes into the far more dirgy sound of that last song, which is fantastic. (It might not be entirely surprising that I tend to prefer the records just after this album, based on this alone.)
might listen more deeply but I think it might be a 3.
Liked the rocking tracks "Alabama" and "Words". If the album built more on that style, it would be great. The other stuff is okay, but a little boring in my ears with the exception of "Heart of Gold", which is a beautiful song. All in all, 3/5 - solid
1 more solo and 3 Crazy Horse albums after this! Compared to his other albums, the instrumentation and baroque arrangements here are a bit much. They contrast heavily with his voice. (3-3.5)
a few thoughts on this: 1) Neil Young's voice is really wimpy and unpleasant to me. 2) the orchestral swells on A Man Needs A Maid are wonderful, maybe the best decision i've heard Young make on any of the albums i've heard. feels both epic and mundane, pastoral maybe? makes me think of the movie Train Dreams from last year. 3) his writing i also find to be grossly overrated so an album that gives a lot more to offer than his stripped down playing and singing? i like that. 4) the stompy track Alabama manages to synthesize the hard country rocker Neil Young with the delicate songwriter Neil Young. it gets the best of both worlds and few of the weak points. deserves to be one of the 1001? this is a better pick than Ragged Glory, Everyone Knows This is Nowhere, On the Beach, and Tonight's the Night; about as good a pick as Rust Never Sleeps; and a weaker pick than After the Gold Rush. i would say yes. i think you can trim his work to 3 albums and this would be a good choice for one of them.
kinda fun, great tunes and nice long drive music
Minhas favoritas foram heart of gold, old man!, needle and the damage done
I think Neil Young is talented but also maybe a little overrated. Plus I think he's better in a group than solo.
Harvest was good in my opinion, though overall quite forgettable. There were songs like Heart of Gold, Old Man, and A Man Needs a Maid really stood out to me. The album has strong cohesion and flow throughout. The orchestration is beautiful - I loved that the production and instrumentals because they never overpower the lyrics, yet still feel organic. Lyrically and thematically, the album feels like Neil Young reflecting on difficult yet ordinary human experiences from a more emotionally worn perspective - that feeling of being so exhausted where you become raw and emotionally honest is so real and human. I can see why some people might find the album a bit of a bummer, but I think that melancholy is also what makes it such a beautiful take on country folk music. It captures sadness in a very human and understated way rather than dramatizing it.
solid vibe didn't listen to all of it
I 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 wanted to love this album; I've heard many say it's his best, and I loved his album (literally yesterday) was great. But I just didn't click with it. Maybe I need to listen to it again, or its a grower, or I need a better time idk...
Neil sounds great; some great ones in here.
yeah its a solid album.. nothing too crazy. great vibes
there will come a day where i admit to myself that i don't really like neil young even though i know i am supposed to, but that day isn't today. it's probably close to today, though. something funny: this album ended, and Harvest Moon started to play, the title track for which I absolutely love. i was like "wait this isn't on this album" which i only recognized mid-work because i like it more than every song on this album by a lot
Pretty good record. It flows pretty well. Favourite Track(s): Words (Between the Lines of Age) Least Favourite Track(s): Old Man
Ah, balm to my ears. But still not my favorite. 3.5 stars.
Once again, there should only be one album per artist on this list. There are way too many Neil Young albums, even if this is one of his better ones.
Not a bad album, a bit slow, but I guess that's his style; always wanted to get familiar with his work and this was a perfect opportunity, so my 1st impression is great 👍
I like it. The intro isn't as strong as other albums ive seen and I dont like his voice. But at moments near the end I can hear the Americana, it feels like i can hear Mitskis The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We. Unfortunately these moments are only when hes silent and let's the instruments play Im not the biggest dna of his writing style too, I think again, it got better as the record progressed. Very mixed bag 5/10
Wow, this album really took me through a whole range of emotions. But like, lowkey /neg. Some of these songs are already on my playlists. The rest of them did not exactly compel me to add to rotation. Season: True Autumn Favorite Song: Old Man
I was so ready to give this a terrible review as soon as I saw the name Neil Young which I know isn’t very open minded of me.. but I kind of liked this. A lot better than the other stuff that he’s done- wasn’t constantly counting down to the end
Actually not my cup of tea, I can see why people feel nostalgic over it. Anyhow it was still enjoyable to listen something sooo out of my comfort zone. A man needs a maid was very memorable. Not in a way that everyone so philosophically put out their meanings on it but in a way that it was in literal terms was relatable. I am unsure of coming back to re-listen.
calm, chill, harmonica, cool bass, summery guitar notes, some lives, charming, folksy
Definitely some good songs on here. Would listen to again (maybe skipping the maid song WTF)
who is neil and how did he make the songs i didnt know i needed to hear the full versions of
Such a talented artist. His music sounds like a warm hug. I love me some calming hippie music !! Fav song is ‘Old Man’.
Not his best by a wide margin but still has a couple of classics.
not rly my style
An album exploring the disconnect between his desperate need for emotional intimacy and emotional unavailability. Some of his best songs and some throwaways, almost all produced and sequenced in such a way as to make the each track feel disconnected from the next
I had been avoiding listening to this album for a couple of weeks as I find that even though Neil Young is an incredibly talented singer, songwriter and artist. His voice is terribly sad and so filled with sorrow that no matter what he sings it feels very depressing. And I was entirely right. This album is an old fashioned country/southern states ballad album that is very much focused on sorrow and regret. The theatrical sections for example in "A Man Needs A Maid" lift feeling of the album a little. But it is still very sad. The big hits from this album are "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man". (3.500)
Just a nice album really. Some good song and was torn between a few for a favourite. Wouldn’t listen to it in full again, think it’s just not a genre I lean towards but did enjoy my listen
I can see what Pearl Jam saw in Neil.
Heart of Gold, Old Man & Damage Done - that's a solid 3 stars right there I tend to tune out the rest, so cant quite get to four stars Still, a pretty good rating for a style of music and a singing voice that I dont really like!
Old man on kyllä levyn parhaimpia biisejä.
pretty chill, not exactly my style but some bangers nonetheless. favs would be heart of gold, old man, and the needle but positive is that it’s unlike anything else i’ve listened to, which is the whole point :)
Liked words
My least favorite album that features Neil Young so far. I still like his voice, though.
Bland for my tastes.
I've been on a string of albums which have been great, 5-star records. Thankfully, Neil came along at just the right time to crush that momentum. Ok, that's unfair. This is a fine record, even great itself at times. Old Man, Alabama, and Heart of Gold are all excellent tracks, especially the last of these. But too often this album has a touch of bore to it. Worse, songs like A Man Needs a Maid just seem out of place for ol' Neil to be singing about. Hey, I'm insecure, maybe I don't need an actual relationship, maybe I just need a maid. Some would say this is just him being honest, others think it is chauvinistic. Me? I just think it sounds stupid. Some hits, some misses. The peaks are great, but the valleys are just as deep. Adds up to an average album.
This didn't live up to how I had it built up in my mind - I'm sure it's great but there's a number of tracks that I don't connect with.
Didn't do much for me.
Hate to say that but country makes me peaceful. Sometimes.
Some nice songs, but I never cared for his voice much.
Ok
wow, 30 years since i've listened to this? "a man needs a maid" is still my favorite song from this album. nothing profound except the sadness.
Now one by Mr. Young is much more up my alley. It's a peaceful folky album that contains a few of his best known songs. I enjoyed listening through this one far more than the previous Neil Young album I had on this list, I may even grab it on vinyl!
This album can be summed up in two words: it’s alright
Out on the weekend - 8/10 Harvest - 7/10 A man need a maid - 3/10(I only liked the ending) Heart of gold - 0/10 Are you ready for the country? - 0/10 (didn't finish it) Old Man - 10/10 There's a world - 10/10 Alabama - 5/10 The Needle and the Damage Done - 9/10 Words (Between the Lines of Age) - 4/10
Hadn't heard this in years and it's still pretty good. Some of the best Neil Young stuff on here. Best song is probably Heart of Gold.
Sure
got so many vinyl records from my sister’s dad in law who passed away last year and this is one of them. i always think of him when i see an album i only know because of him.
enjoyed for the most part - a couple of standouts - some bits felt redundant/same-y but overall decent album for me
Relaxing. I liked it
bien
Pretty nice overall. I can see it becoming something I come back to every one in a while. It does feel a bit disjointed from time to time, though
I've heard it before and liked it
una iglesia con buena musica
Nice listen, but a bit too old school for me
I liked this album more than I thought I would!
second half of this album is just so strong - Alabama is UNDERRATED !
= the Beatles
Agregué algunas a mi playlist.
Better than I remember but still a 2.5
Mellow bruh.
I’m not a fan, and not the audience
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I never thought of myself as a Neil Young fan but I thought there were some good songs on here. I might listen to this one again.
enjoyed the ones i recognised but wasn't too fussed about the rest
I just don't like Neil Young's voice....
q letering babado FAVS (top 3): a man needs a maid, theres a world, alabama mençoes honrosas: out of the weekend, the needle and the damage don, words eu curti o album mas nao tanto como eu deveria, o album é bem curtinho otimo pra relaxar e o fim é definitivamente a melhor parte nota final:3.5/5
Glad to have heard the songs they don’t play on the radio. Good stuff.
Been meaning to check this album out for a hot minute since I see so much praise for it everywhere. The only thing I've knowingly heard of Neil Young is Sufjan Stevens' cover of There's A World, which I of course love so I'm not expecting to be let down around here. Out on the Weekend - Not at all how I imagined his voice was going to sound. Vaguely western Ben Gibbard sounding. Pretty solid song though. I appreciate the slow build up throughout. Ready for more of a pay off in the next track maybe? Harvest - Certainly not a pay off to the build up in the last song, but that's okay. I'm realizing that it's maybe not that sort of album. Hearing quite a lot of small indie artists that I cherish in this song specifically. Interesting that this album has become so acclaimed when it's not really a sound that has remained extremely popular within the culture. Low key, but I'm digging. A Man Needs a Maid - Wow, all of a sudden we've got huge instrumentation. I'm experiencing a bit of positive confusion about the sudden shift in drama with the LSO here. Huge change in mood and structure from the previous two, but why? Heart of Gold - Got a bit of a blues rocker going on with this one. Again, a massive change from the first two songs and the third. All four have been solid tunes so far for sure, but I'm getting whiplash between styles. Still having trouble divorcing myself from the thought that this album is not going to be just a collection of songs, but it may in fact be. Not sure how I feel about it. Are You Ready for the Country? - Okay, another blues rock track. We're sounding like Dylan. I'm getting more grounded in what I'm supposed to expect here. Groovy number. I like the funny slidey guitar throughout. Old Man - Like this one quite a lot. Straight forward and a great tune. Nothing mind blowing going on, but there doesn't need to be with the bones as good as this. There's A World - Well, okay, the LSO is back. I mean, the song is great, the lyrics are lovely, and the orchestration is phenomenal. Really makes the lyrics seem incredibly majestic. It's just so different from everything else on the record. Feel like I'm being an asshole and should be able to turn off my desire for cohesion, but it's so widely distractingly different. The last second of the track with the stage sound is pretty interesting though. I fear that Sufjan did not set my expectations up properly here... Alabama - Not a huge fan of this one. Sort of plodding, lethargic rock instrumental that is so rich and full that I'm just sitting here with indigestion and ready to be done with. The sarcastic shady lyrics are quite amusing though. The Needle and the Damage Done - Cute little acoustic number. The lyrics are poignant and the swung chords accompany them well. The live version reveal is done well and the hard cut to the next track really works with the thematic content. It just makes me think again though, that there obviously is some sort of ALBUM statement going on here. But what and how??? Words (Between the Lines of Age) - Shreddin guitar solo going on at the end there. I'll be honest and say this is what I thought the whole album was going to sound more or less. Having heard it, I'm glad it doesn't all sound this way, but that's not necessarily a dig on this one. I'm so confused by this album. Obviously there is some quality song-writing going on, but I can't tell if the disparate musical styles herein are due to some attempt at cohesive eclecticism or just at a total inability to be cohesive. I am sort of leaning to believe the former right now. A perusal of the Wikipedia page doesn't really give me an indication of what the artistic intent is meant to be here, so it's really hard for me to accept this as a body of work that is helmed by an artist looking to create a body of work. There is genius in the lyrics for sure. I had to pivot to paying more attention to them when I realized that perhaps there was more merit in them than in the composition. But there are some moments in the production that make one think there is meant to be more attention paid there. Hard to wrap my mind around this one, and I'm sort of boggled at the reputation this album has. Strange strange strange.
Won’t be revisiting but was nice to listen to. I appreciate how older music is sure to incorporate some live instruments. Love that tbh.
12/03/2026 Favourite Songs: Out on the Weekend, A Man Needs a Maid, Heart of Gold, Words. Score: 3/5
I’m a bit conflicted here. I love Neil Young but I don’t think it’s one of his greatest albums. This is probably his most commercially successful album with Heart of Gold possibly being his biggest hit. Thing is that Young is at his best when he’s rugged and unfinished, showing his vulnerability and fragility to the world. This is probably his most produced and polished album which makes for a diminished experience. Still The Needle and the Damage Done is an all time great Neil Young tune and it’s a good listen and important to his discography. Call it three stars.
I started listening to country music in sense after i played Red Dead Redemption 2. In my mind I’ve always conjured up an image of loneliness and being lost in large landscapes of mountains and nature when it comes to picturing how country music makes me feel. This album does carry a lot of those same qualities, although it does also contain rock elements which help give it a sense of uniqueness to me at least. At points it drags on though and bores me but with the song structures containing elements of Electric Guitar, Banjos, Harmonica tapped off with grandiose string sections in songs such as “A Man Needs a Maid” it blew expectations for me for what a country song or rock song from the 70’s could be. Its an interesting album but I fear I wont really revisit it that often because i did not find as much replayability in it as I thought I would. Final Score: 6/10 Favorite Songs: Alabama, Heart Of Gold, The Needle and the Damage Done
Was a good album with some old stand-by's worth a relisten on occasion.
Neil Young album #3 here. There are a couple tracks that I like better, like "Are You Ready for the Country," with the funky piano & arrangement and obscure lyrics; "Old Man," where the guitar & banjo are more interesting than on some of the the other tracks here and is interesting hearing it now as an older person, and "Needle and the Damage Done," which is very raw and intense. However, this one also contains one song that I actively dislike ("A Man Needs a Maid"), a song I've heard so many times that just seeing the title without listening to it now has it stuck in my head ("Heart of Gold"), and a bunch of other songs that are pleasant but not a standout. So, I probably wouldn't ever go back to it, and therefore, 3 stars.
Before: Well, this is my second Neil Young so far and my first repeat artist. Never was a big fan but it looks like I'll have plenty of opportunities to get better acquainted with his music over the next 2+ years. During: Starts off with a nice tune, kind of sappy, but I like it. 4 Out On The Weekend 2 Harvest 1 A Man Needs A Maid 5 Heart Of Gold 2 Are You Ready For The Country 4 Old Man 2 There's A World 2 Alabama 3 The Needle And The Damage Done 3 Words (Between The Lines Of Age) ----------------------------------------- 2.8 AVERAGE After: There are way too many Neil Young Album's on this list; however this is supposedly considered one of if not this best. For that reason I'll give it a 4 for suitability for this list. For relevance I'll rate it a 3. 3 - my personal rating 4 - suitability for this list 3 - relevance ------------------------------ 3 - composite rating
I liked listening but it didn't strike me
Enjoyable but not markedly memorable
this album is great! it’s not the kind of music i’d usually listen but still, it’s super chill and relaxing. I love Neil’s voice in this and the instruments and background music? it’s amazing!
A little bit of Neil goes a long way. The old standards are great, but after a while that voice grates on me.
My rating 3.2. 3rd Neil Young album. Want to listen to the three I order of release. Again, this is ok. Hit songs (Old Man and Heart of Gold) worth the price of admission but rest of album. Meh.
Here's an album that brings me back to childhood. My parents had this in the van's CD changer pretty frequently, so I heard it a lot. Do I like it because of nostalgia or because it's actually good? Hard to say, but it's a nice listen.
Classic.
Bien en general
Nice 🌾🌾🌾
cool
Although his voice is iconic, I find it hard to say that Neil Young is a strong vocalist. His rock music is fantastic, and I even like his lyrics, but his vocal power comes in a distant third in this competition. Even when the guitars are blaring he’s melancholy at best in delivering his lines. I say all that to get to the point that this is a fairly good album and Neil Young is an excellent musician.
Okay it’s got a top song
neat... no wonder people like this neil young fella
Didn’t mind this one but not really that into it
least fav- A Man Needs a Maid liked first few songs the most and the last two as well
Its OK, not really for me. I like the more orchestral/cinematic sounds that some tracks use. It didn't grab my attention, but it was a good background listening in the evening. :)
Harvest is a pretty good country rock album with a good variety of different sounds that keep every song feeling interesting. 3.8/5
Much better than the usual Neil Young so it gets a 3
A maybe •Heart of gold, definitivamente. •The needle and the damage tiene cierta tristeza que me gusta. Y la transicion hacia Words between the lines of age es un si.
3.0
Nice.
it’s a good album and i do love neil young. however, something is holding me back from giving it a 4 as i feel like it would round down to a 3 before it rounded up to a 4.
I've come to expect such greatness from Neil that this perfectly solid album feels a bit disappointing. There is still some truly fantastic songs like Heart of Gold and Old Man. Unfortunately the album has some lackluster moments as well like Are You Ready for the Country or There's a World which come off as a bit unexciting musically. There is also a few other that are good but not exactly super standout. Then there is A Man Needs a Maid which has unfortunately aged kind of poorly. I have Neil Young albums I prefer to this, but to be honest it would still be a highpoint in many artists' discographies.
not my cup of tea
Meh, ok
Lined more than I expected!
Not as bad as most Neil young albums.
1972. Wholesome raw lyrics and imagery and a best seller for the year. I do love the era and soundscape.
Loves its
didn’t like his voice, songs felt really dramatic which i liked, idk not entirely my thing
Some really good songs. For some reason Words really got to me - especially the instrumental parts. Heart of Gold also a classic of course.
This is by far the best album of his, I mean, I grew up loving “Heart of Gold”, but for some reason, I just can’t stand an entire albums worth of the man’s voice. I mean a song or two, I’m all in; just amazes me how quickly I’m all out.
This is one of those quintessentially of their era albums, it just screams late 60s to 70s, and a lot of that perception is probably because he was one of the key artists that shaped that era. There isn't a whole lot going on with the production, just a man and his guitar for the most part. It feels like a very lonely album, without much to say outside of his own world. I think my favorite songs were "Words" or one of "Out on the Weekend" or "Harvest". I especially thought "Heart of Gold" was a let down.
Some good songs on here but not sure about his voice
It's fine for that folksy vibe. Heart of Gold is great of course. The rest is just alright.
Neil Young is fine. There's good songwriting here. Interesting song structures and melodies. Not terrible.
Pacing and atmosphere. Depth and variety. A good folk album shocker.
Ok didn't get to listen to much
Decent not my thing Folk music
Not the best, but not the worst out there. There’s 4-5 songs there that I can listen too.
I really liked the music, hated his voice. A man needs a maid was a bit of an odd song I really liked the orchestra on that track though. I think my favorite song was there’s a world.
Bietje langweilig
Some very good songs and a couple of stinkers, altogether not one of my favorites from niel but it’s a classic for a reason
Good album instrumentals. Surprising orchestral instrumentals on a few of the tracks. Rhyming convention and lyrics feel a little too similar over the album. Too leisurely for my day to day taste.
Good little boring
Love the harmonica but I don’t think it’s really my genre
While I'm not really a Neil Young fan, this was actually pretty good. Kind of feels like the narrator for the album is a midwestern farmer. The sound of the first two tracks seems almost country, but the nasally, quavering sound and inflection of Young's voice make it clear that it's folk music with no Nashville association (let alone Alabama and his issues with them). Heart of Gold and Old Man are memorable.
This was a nice, chill album. I enjoyed it, but nothing that I would re-listen to. The piano was nice.
For someone who is so often compared to my favorite artist (Bob Dylan), Neil Young doesn’t quite hit the same and I’ll try to articulate why. In terms of lyrics, Neil Young’s are fine but about on par with most decent songwriters of the time. I’m not a huge fan of his voice, because it’s neither technically good sounding nor unique/charming. Musically, I’d say he’s more consistent than Dylan, but too often verges on overly smooth. I guess that’s how I’d characterize the difference between him and Dylan overall: Young is more consistent, but this comes at the cost of charm/authenticity. Not that this is a bad album by any means. I preferred Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, but I quite enjoyed listening. Heart of Gold and There’s a World definitely stuck out to me as particularly well put together tracks. Favorite Track: There’s a World
Listening this while studying and reminiscing the future I'm inventing for myself.
I'm not a Neil Young fan, never have been. I like perhaps 2 of his songs. BUT, this album is actually quite beautiful. Perhaps if us haters heard this first, our opinion might be a little better.
I liked Old Man and the last two tracks. Found me at the wrong time, I think if I found it at a different period in my life I'd enjoy it more. Otherwise I thought the lyrics were a bit elementary, though I didn't give it that much attention.
I'm surprised this is his biggest album. His weakest so far for me. This good of course
Weaker than After the Goldrush
Again Neil Young? This was better than the last and I really liked Heart of Gold or whatever, but I still didn’t care what was playing.
I lovee this genre of music. He’s got some of the absolute classics, but I’m trying to set a bar for the rest of the year.
Not my favorite Neil Young album, but a very Neil Young album nonetheless.
Worth switching to the remastered version. Some good tracks here, but hearing most of these for the first time, aside from the big hits, I'm not finding many standouts. Definitely has its moments - Old Man is great, as is The Needle and the Damage Done.
Always enjoy Neil Young, but nothing about this album blew me away
First album, it’s decent and not usually what I listen to. But I like it
Mid
Goede vibe maar niet veel onthouden 7/10
Only having heard “Old Man”, this was a very folky sound, making it very appealing for me. Though not every track was as enjoyable as I expected, in large I would listen to some of these many more times.
Not my favorite Neil record but there's quite enough gems on here to make a enjoyable listen. The orchestral songs leave a lot to be desired though.
I was honestly expecting to like this album more than I did. There's a fondness I feel for Neil Young that gives the glean of nostalgia even to songs I've never heard before. I added one new song to my library (Are You Ready For The Country). The crown jewel is Old Man for me; it has a special place in my heart. Favorites: Old Man, Are You Ready For The Country Skips: A Man Needs A Maid is almost painfully bad SORRY
:)
While this album is not my typical genre I listen to. The musicality and instrumentals were very calm and relaxing. 3/5
Old man is a favorite. Plucky banjo and steel guitar always welcome. A man needs a maid and there’s a world feel very out of place (and bad). Really details a classic
It’s fine
Had to get into
Entirely ok. Too light for me.
Most songs sound the same. A bit whiny
I am familiar with Harvest Moon and Heart of Gold but what I picked up on is Nelly’s Hot in Herre sampled the beginning of There’s a World
The one Neil album worthy of inclusion maybe. And to be honest I’m not sure he should be here at all. He does write decent and even great songs from time to time, but there is a lot of junk. A lot. 3
Not my typical listen as my type of music usually isn't country or folk, but it's an ok album. Favorite song is Alabama I guess, really nice beat and feels powerful. Interesting use of harmonicas and voice in the songs. Absolutely hate "A Man needs a Maid" because ew you don't need someone that caters you 100% and you give nothing
Some good songs but mostly kinda sad vibes
Ok, couple of enjoyable tracks, love needle. There's a world sounded grand, might have to listen again.
Better upon second listen. Matches the colours of the album cover well. Rustic feeling, calming at times. Nice to listen to in the background while reading because of the consistent steady pace.
Wait, what's the hype all about? This is SO BORING and honestly, it's pretty cheesy. I've heard some folk albums that were genuinely good and unique(I'm not a fan of the genre, so this doesn't happen often), and this album, sadly, fell into the category of generic folk albums that aren't too good. Sorry, Neil. This isn't a masterpiece. It's just average.
It wasn’t my favorite but a nice sound
the first time I heard a Neil Young song, I was 20 years old and in a music therapy session while in a psych ward. the MT played Heart of Gold as part of a lyric discussion. I thought the song was super groovy and now it had so much more meaning to me. imagine my disappointment when I found out that most of Neil Young's music doesn't have the same oomph as Heart of Gold.
Heart of Gold
I’m not crazy about Neil Young… and this did very little to move the needle for me. That said, I recognize Neil’s contributions and importance. It’s just not for me. Southern man didn’t need him ‘round anyhow.
Right off the bat, it caught me off guard as it is not the type of rock I’m used to. It feels like a borderline between country and rock, with the intensity turned up towards the latter end of the album. I’ve never listened to Neil Young, or so I thought since “Old Man” sounded SO FAMILIAR. By far it was my favorite track, but I did enjoy the unexpected orchestral arrangements found in some of the tracks. Its strength lies in its simplicity and Young’s ability to dissect unpleasant topics (loss and loneliness.)
I was not impressed by the first couple of tracks. Really bland and low energy sounding. But I came to appreciate his voice and the orchestration of some of the other pieces and I recognized Heart of Gold and realized this guy sang “Horse with No Name” so that’s cool. I gave it a second listen and I can appreciate it more for what it is.
It was alright. The singles from the album, I felt like I grew up with. I used to play covers of Old Man and Heart of Gold, but I had never heard the rest of this album. I was not expecting the instrumentation on There Is a World, but I really enjoyed it.
Listening Notes Neil Young tunes just have this certain quality to them that you can pick them out instantly. There's always so much space in the recordings that just a few instruments fill, and of course, the voice. The London Symphony Orchestra tracks are fascinating to be included here, almost a grab bag of stuff he was working on the year following After the Gold Rush Standouts: "Out for the Weekend", "Heart of Gold", "Are You Ready for the Country?", "Old Man", "Words(Between the Lines of Age)" First time? No Will it go into your rotation? Should be spun more often
I didn't realize how orchestral this Album would be, while it was enjoyable, I don't think Neil Young's voice really matched the orchestral sound. However, songs like old man really fit his vibe. Overall it was okay but I dont think ill be coming back to this album much.
Country with super sad lyrics. But this "maid" song was so epic, it made me laugh:D
A familiar album! Some real gooduns
Not really a Neil Young fan and not for lack of trying. "Heart of Gold" is one of his best songs, but there's not much here for me otherwise.
A bit winey
Always sort of liked Neil Young and never really knew why and this listen, more than ever, confirms I'm in fact actually a bit indifferent to his brand of whimsy country folk. There are highs (Heart, Old Man, Needle) and lows (A Man Needs a Maid) but I never really felt super engaged with the music. And someone said he sounds like Kermit which sort of ruined it a bit for me.
Average
The other two Neil Young albums I have heard so far were middle of the road for me. This wasn't much difference. I like the vibes, but his high notes are just nails on a chalkboard to me. Kind of brings down my enjoyment every time. Still a nice album though.
easy listening kept thinking I was listening to the same song because they all sound very similar
Hee haw
Classic album, with some excellent songs, I have this in my collection
My biggest compliment is that Neil Young kinda sounds like Paul Williams?
I knew like on song on this album called “old man” but besides that it seems like a raw album as in like I’m guessing the artist made it in like his room after a day with adventure or something so this album wasn’t bad or completely amazing.
Old Man has and will always be top tier!
Yeeehhhh
Have never been a fan of Young's voice, but the musical craftsmanship on this album does enough heavy lifting to make it redeemable.
This is probably my favorite of his. Having said that he still can’t sing. With average vocals this might be a 5. With Neal’s? A 3
i mean, the guys are hardworking but ...
Not my kind of music but I could tell there was talent
Leve - Country Rock
I can appreciate this but it's not especially my jam; gotta really be in the mood.
just 3, was fine to listen in the background, but nothing stayed in my memory
There's a lot of Neil Young I like now than this album, but it's definitely got some great songs. It's a bit on sleepy side overall for my taste, and there are a few songs I'll generally skip.
I won't deny that Neil Young is a great lyricist. Nor will I deny that he has an exceptional ability to craft great music. It was an okay album for me. Heart of Gold and Old Man are stand-outs, but without Alabama, we don't get Sweet Home Alabama
I don’t think I’m a Neil Young guy. While I was okay with the album I don’t see myself ever returning to any of this songs. Except Old Man. That’s a good song.
I enjoyed this off and on. Some songs were great, other songs didn’t do much for me. I prefer After the Gold Rush, listened to it afterwards to confirm. I guess I just like Neil Young more when he’s darker and more stripped back.
Yeah, it's based and classic album and I like it. Basically, every song I already had in my playlist, I'd already known and liked for a long time. Even though I listened to the full album today, I didn't add any new songs to my playlist. Not really my favorite style and all that, but it's just so beautiful 3/5 —————————————— Liked: — Out on the Weekend — Heart of Gold — Old Man
3.5ish. This album is so samey that it sounds like one long track, sung by Kermit the Frog.
Really boring and a clear step below his other records from this era. A disappointment. The singles still slap and bang.
Started strong but feel a little bland in the middle.
