Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Maybe a little to esoteric for me? But maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind for it. I had it on while I was ripping out old gross carpet. Not really a great frame of reference. I might revisit this one.
Good trance music if you just need to zone out.
first listen. Great background music I had fun
Instrumental album, reminds me of calmer chemical brothers
Easy listening with some occasionally interesting beats, grooves, or samples. The standout for me is Aquarius, aa it just pulled me into a deep focus. I also liked roygbiv and a couple others. For an electronic album, I enjoyed it. Not as much as Homework by Daft Punk, and still not my favorite genre.
This is good but I've had too much experimental / instrumental music recently and couldn't get all the way through it
I... don't really know what to think. It's a nice ambient music ? To listen when doing other things maybe.
Good stuff. I enjoyed working while listening to it. Some interesting songs. But overall it's just not really a genre that does much for me. But I'll probably listen again
Some of the songs were interesting, but others made me a bit uncomfortable. Listening to 3 minutes of a little kid slowly saying "I... love... you.." was particularly unsettling. All in all, a decent album to listen to while working, but not anything overly special for me.
This is definitely a slow burn. Not the sort of music to give instant satisfaction or hit you with the catchy tunes. I think I could love this after another 20 listens but after 1 listen it hasn't grabbed me. I can see the influence this could have had on Radiohead and there change going forward from Ok Computer to KidA and beyond. Very interesting listen but not engaging enough to be an instant love.
Very cool. A little bit dissonant at times but definitely breaking some ground and ahead of its time.
Good musics, but I won’t listen to them again.
I really like them, but this is not my favorite album.
I like how menacing the first half of this thing is. The rest is considerably more upbeat. One Very Important seems especially prescient today. All in all, this seems like itd be good for studying and/or committing petty crimes -The whole breadth of the human experience.
funky little tunes idk if its something i'd listen to but i can appreciate it for what it is if this was a video game OST i'd be like damn this slaps but its not so im not solid 3/5
A nice easy vibe. Easy listening in the background. Didn’t particularly inspire me. Didn’t interfere. 3
Chili techno
It has some good parts and some boring parts. More boring than good. But I can understand why people like it. Favorite song: roygbiv
I know this is probably the opposite of what many who love this album would want to hear, but someone please rap over this album, I beg of you! The drums, the bass, the samples, the mixes, it all beckons even the most simple minded, creatively stricken individual to start perusing his mind for a simple bar or two that would fit just right between the man and woman saying orange back and forth. Otherwise, this album has an incredibly solid foundation that sadly is rarely built upon in a manner to warrant its egregious run time, both as a whole album, and on a song by song basis. This songs can be funky, cosy, hell, half the tracks can be downright creepy, but the feeling almost always abandons the listener by the end of the track because each song seems determined to either be too short to process, or too long to remember any important changes. Its a shame, because I would often get into every track, but the feeling of grooving along or just chilling would go away, and then I'd realize I still have three minutes of song left. Boards of Canada must be aware of this issue too, as the best song, Roygbiv, isn't even three minutes long, and takes full advantage of this time. I think were this to be produced outside of the CD era, it would be more efficient in its production, and this thing really does sound like its from the future, so this releasing even a decade later wouldn't hurt it at all. It really is crazy that this is 1998, but it either needs more to the songs, or less of them.
4/16/24. Never heard of this group and didn't know what to expect, and received a more ambient, electronic record. At first I wasn't into it, but as each song came and went, I dug it more. It reminded me of a more laid back Avalanches.
Good background music for surfing in counter-strike
I listen to a few of these songs regularly but this isnt their best album imo decent thoughbeit
This album is super weird. It moves from outright creep city to sublime. It moves from jarringly experimental to satisfying groove... I went back and forth on my feelings and thoughts about it practically every other song. Is it good? I think it has enough in it to recommend a listen, but one must be wary that it is... not necessarily an easy album to get through directly. On balance I suppose I "almost" kind of like it, and maybe, just maybe if I am in the right sort of mood I might like the creepy bits...
Very electronic
Very relaxing
Oh boy, more Electronica! Lots of Electronica lately and it's getting harder and harder to distinguish them apart. Lots of repetition and mid-numbing rhythms that have me yearning for some vocals, two guitars, bass and drums. The positives is that it's a relaxing, chill listen, you can turn your brain off, close your eyes and enjoy. I couldn't tell you what the songs were about, the song titles or even can tell the songs apart, but at least I didn't have the urge to shut it off. I learned that Boards of Canada aren't even from Canada, but are Scottish. They even have another album called, Trans Canada Highway, which is a real highway that goes through the city where I live. Go figure.
Hmm,....will Forget about it again.
This made a for nice mellow listen. It wasn’t super engaging, but had enough to keep me interested in what was coming next.
A very low-fit album, I might have snooze off during especially monotone moments, but otherwise it was a nice record. Surely you have to be in a mood to listen to it, something like Lowfi Beats to Study to. I know what to play through my headphones at night when I'm unable to sleep, so I'll take it as a compliment for the group.
Interessante, ma non particolarmente convincente, pensavo che il sound fosse più graffiante.
I definitely didn't need to hear this before dying. It's all pretty pleasant, though. The songs generally have a way of unfolding as to suggest a soundtrack to a nostalgic day.
Meh

I must have come across the name of this band at some point over the decades since this record was released. With the keywords "boards" and "Canada" I must have imagined it was sourced from the Royal Canadian Musicians' Program (RCMP) or some similar government agency. Just recently, via Ixi on youtube, I was bewildered to discover the genre was less 'yodelling mounted police' and more a downtempo electronic trip. Now who's the ass? I could immediately make a connection to other contemporary expeditionary sequencey collectives like M83, AIR, FSOL... though I'm inclined to describe this record as more on the sinister, robot jazz bent of Meat Beat Manifesto. Anyway, Boards of Canada... a sinister jazz robot, by any other name, would sound as menacingly chill.
2 1/2 isn't something I would turn off but also wouldn't be reaching to turn it on
pretty inoffensive really, not bad at all.
I've never heard of this album or artist before, but this is my second electronica album in a row, and as much as I tend to enjoy electronica music, I've had three hours of it in two days (thank you LTJ Bukem). I thought this album was pretty good, and I really liked the beats they used. Even though the album was long, I never found it boring, and it was overall pleasant to listen to. Even though I like electronica music, I can't really pinpoint what makes me like certain albums more than others, other than being able to say whether or not I enjoyed listening to it. I felt like this album was the pretty standard fare.
Its pretty good, if not somewhat one-dimensional
Spannender Triphop
Decent electronica, but not an all-time classic.
Quite nice soundtracky plinking plonking electrical noodling. Bit unfocused. But a nice noise.
Not unpleasant but a bit tedious to pay full attention to. Fine as background music. “Telephasic Workshop” “Roygbiv” and “Turquoise Hexagon Sun” are highlights.
Electronic, ambient. Un poco largo.
Enjoyed this. Will need to explore them further 3.5
Great in the background, not so sure it stands up to a more careful listen though.
Too minimal. I could barely hear it. Like the memory of a whisper in a noisy room.
Another one of those "in the right setting, this'll be awesome" type of albums. More of a late night after-party feel to it, not a Tuesday morning workday.
Never heard of this. So far it’s noises and tones. No melody, nothing memorable. Caught myself bopping my head a couple of times. Excellent background music for a restaurant or something.
Solid ambience
nice n vibey
Cool lo fi vibe album. Reminds me of stuff I listen to while I work
The first album I've got that was already in my collection, I think. It's a weird one, and I can see how somebody not expecting it would be put off and rate it poorly. I think it acheieves what it sets out to do, which is ultimately more of a mood/soundscape that a typical musical experience. 3.5/5
not my taste
3.5
Some grooves but not amazing
Sometimes I liked it; sometimes it sounded like cheesy background music to a pornographic film.
Definitely some interesting sounds
Never heard of them before ... for sure. Genre: Electronic, downtempo, ambient, trip hop, psychedelia 1998 It has all the elements I have grown to appreciate by listening to the albums on this list. A couple of years ago I would have dismissed it with giving it a chance. It is great, no. It is good, not sure. Did I enjoy the experience. I think so. The album is kinda ok, until it gets towards the end and that's when it picks up. Best songs: Roygbiv, Aquarius, Olson Nice to listen to but really just as background music or music to sleep to. 3.5
Minecraft music on steroids
This was one of those that whilst it didn't blow my socks off, I'm happy it was on the 1001 list and therefore I had the reason to listen to. I had never heard of Boards of Canada before but this album was quite interesting, if not fully absorbing. Lots of samples and neat use of synths.
I've had this album recommended by spotify for a few years now. I think I've listened to it once before. I'm enjoying this listen. I'd be fine with 11 songs as a whole album. Another solid album that is just too long.
This album is really cool, I haven't really listened to a ton of electronic music but this has a sort of nostalgic vibe with the children's voices interspersed. It would be great to listen to while doing work or otherwise zoning out hahah. I dont really know how to determine if this is "good" electronic music or not, but its cool!
Got this CD through Columbia House. My first foray into true electronic music
Not the best in the genre, but ok
This was great music to lightly doze to
6/10
Interesting and atmospheric
Other than roygbiv, I don’t see myself returning to this
Good background music, not much to distinguish each song.
Musical foraging. Sometimes it can be warming and on others upset ones tummy. Here it is mostly the former.
Not really into this sort of stuff. The first few songs really put me off but the more ambient and relaxing later tracks brought me back a bit. A bare pass for this though.
Just some ambience sounds... Admittedly, with a rather unique vibe. Should you have listened to this before you die? No. Does it hurt? No. At least not if you have something to do while this plays in the background.
Good, but not as good as Campfire Headphase.
Basically just a random collection of sounds, some better than others. I respect them for their influence on other arstists though.
Background music to read and draw to. Not bad, not my favorite.
Not bad but not great either.
"Turquoise Hexagon Sun" -- I really like the vibe here, though I find it hard to keep my full attention on it. "Pete Standing Alone" -- I like the crackling sounds on this one. Oh and now I like the distorted voice muttering sound. I'm not exactly sure what people do with this music. Do they dance to it? Or just kind of use it to add texture to their day?
I enjoyed this I'd say! It was pretty long but solid vibes throughout. Not like floored by it but it was certainly enjoyable. Probably like a 3.5 we'll decide whether I round up or down tomorrow.
'Music has the right to children' is an awesome album title.
Not bad but a little to chill for my daily playlist
Nice background music but nothing groundbreaking 🤷♀️
Suuuuper deep ambient and actually pretty intense in a not nice way
Never heard of these guys. Hm Scottish electronic duo. Distinctive style of electronica, featuring vintage synthesisers, degraded analogue production, found sounds and samples, and hip hop-inspired rhythms. Could make for some great background music today. I wonder if I'll recognize any of these. i'm digging the dissonance of these tracks. Interesting album art too. A faceless family, in the late 60's. Could possibly be Mt. Fuji. I was wrong. The album cover is a modified version of a family photo taken at Banff Springs in Alberta, Canada. According to Sandison, "If there's sadness in the way we use memory, it's because the time you're focusing on has gone forever… It's a theme we play on a lot, that bittersweet thing where you face up to the fact that certain chapters of your life are just Polaroids now."
I’m normally really not a fan of music with no vocals/lyrics but this album grew on me as I listened to it. Reminded me a lot of the times I’d put the Minecraft soundtrack on when I really needed to focus on something. This album is more chill than focus, though.
It's fine. Quite long. Quite samey.
Fades into the background but inoffensive. Enjoyed it for chill vibes
I expected to like this a lot. I like the genre and have heard and liked some of Boards of Canada's songs. And I've heard this is a classic of the genre. I was disappointed. It's not bad, but.
Album feels like a compilation of sampling for Radiohead in the first half and more Massive Attack-esque in the second. Overall found a bit hard to distinguish tracks as very ambient + lyricless, prefer first half's flow of tracks
Very creepy and intriguing electronic music from some Scotland natives. Coupled with the album cover, this feels like it could have been a horror movie soundtrack.
I like the style. Never heard of these guys. Definitely going on both my ambient playlist and electronic playlist. Best tracks: Roygbiv, Turquoise Hexagon Sun, Aquarius, Happy Cycling, An Eagle in Your Mind
Nice 90s electronic music to vibe too. My issue with it is nothing really stands out. I would have a hard time telling which song is which. Struggles to stand up next to its contemporaries. Added to playlist: Roygbiv
Didn’t expect to like this. It did grow on me though. Not sure it will be a regular listen but it pulled me in. May be a little long though. Always think it must have been an exciting time for an electronic musician so many new sounds and techniques to learn and explore.
hmmmmmm
Don’t know why, but thought they were an indie band
Good background music
Kinda eerie and had some spooky vibes at times. Just unoffensive synth tones for the most part. Just fine.
It's a decent electronic album, although it seems a tad overrated. I think I'm often just lukewarm on the whole genre
An eagle in your mind
Pleasant enough electronic music.
Pretty good, will have to listen to this more
nice electronica. happy to listen more than once.
Very good for background music, can't remember much of it but I enjoyed a good bit of it
Good, but a bit aimless
I'd like to think if I had heard this album in the time period it was in, maybe I could see it's influence and gravity a bit more, but it's just so sluggish at times, and at others it's beautiful.
Not the worst 3 I'm sure I'm going to like this a lot actually
I feel like this is album should be used as background music for some candlelit wine bar. I don't hate it and I don't love it.
Musique d’ascenseur 3000
I've seen a lot of praise for BoC. This album had a reputation to live up to and at first I wasn't quite sure if this album delivered. The second half of the album won me over. I'd suggest that anyone hesitant about this record stays on through the end. Overall this was pretty enjoyable. standouts: Bocuma, Roygbiv, Aquarius 3.5
Highlights: "Turquoise Hexagon Sun," "Telephasic Workshop," "Roygbiv," "Smokes Quantity" You could summarize the album's musical contribution pretty simply as using contemporary beats to frame vintage synthesizers, but its high status is more about the theme or nerve of popular taste they struck on. The samples, in part because they can be absurd, do help evoke the associated use of these sounds in public broadcast interstices. For better it worse, this plants the seed for 'vaporwave' aesthetic fifteen years out. The stylized lo-fi to evoke nostalgia. The gloomy imagination of a liminal space as utopia, where even our fantasies cannot escape contamination by commercial artifacts. In some ways it hasn't aged well, especially the digital stretching near the start when you'd suppose this is all about analog character, but if anything this album is still underrated for the influence it's had on popular taste over such a long period.
I was not taken by the first few songs but eventually this album grew on me.
I understand that this record could have potentially caused a massive impact on an entire genre alone, I also understand that my favorite record of all time can be considered electronic. The biggest things that strays me from fully enjoying this is various repetition and lack of singing. This has led to conclude that this is a good record just right for me it would be dishonest of me to discredit the record. best track: roygbiv worst track: aquarius I could not answer these next prompts
I didn't recognise BoC when I got this album but discovered I had listened to a few tracks off of this album previously. While I like BoC I preferred other collections to this one.
There's some crazy sounds on here I admit. Dark, industrial, spacey, it's quite unique. It seems to be in two minds though. Too dingy to be listening to on your bed, but too tranquil to be listening to in a witch's dungeon. Got big Massive Attack vibes
Say you don’t like Boards of Canada 3 times in a mirror and Pitchfork will appear behind you and tell you you’re uncool. Loungey and dreamy. It’s alright. 3/5
I really enjoyed this. It's smarter than you really expect it to be, with subtly layered sounds and an avant garde sensibility. Chill, but mildly trippy. My main critique is that it's a bit long. Fave Songs: Telephasic Workshop, Aquarius, Sixtyten, Turquoise Hexagon Sun, Pete Standing Alone, An Eagle in Your Mind
Okay
I'd been eagerly anticipating this album as I've seen it mentioned a lot on the subreddit for this site. I had no idea what to expect and only kind of vaguely remembered it was electronica. I didn't mind this. I'm not really into ambient/chill electronic music, but it's okay. I liked "Telephasic Workshop" the most. If I was ever in the mood for mostly instrumental chill music, I would consider playing this again. Probably more of a 3.5.
Ooo, did not expect this at all, and I really like it. I don't listen to music like this very often, but when I hear something like this album, I am more interested in it. Intriguing rhythms, intricate layers, and never an assault on the ears. I have a feeling if I were to listen to this record on headphones, possibly under the influence of something, I'd be very into it. Even completely sober in the light of day, as I am now and was when I listened to this, it draws me in.
Not what I was expecting but a nice album to chill out to
I liked it. If I think about it Id play it again but that most likely wont happen
Interesting without ever being amazing
This made for excellent background music while I was reading. While I might not necessarily seek this out to actively listen to, I would gladly put it on again in the background for something easy to listen to. Not bad.
Electronic, ambient. Un poco largo.
Fun to listen to!
I need to be in a completely different mindset to enjoy this album. Some would even call it a 'high'-er mindset YMMV
Trsè bonne musique electronique ambiante mais aussi pour écouté paisiblement. 3.5 L'album est long mais c'est pas si mal comme écoute
Chill electronic music, cool for listening to in the background.
Interesting – perhaps the mid-point between Broken Social Scene (which should really be included on this list) and Aphex Twin (which qualifies, too, one supposes, though only just). One prefers the former overall. This has its moments and its winning/engaging moods, but the net effect feels a little dry and laborotoreal. The title of a cut on a later record applies here (and perhaps to all their work): "Music Is Math." It can be more of course, though it mostly isn't here. No real traction is gained. One is simply not compelled, as inoffensive and mildly interesting as this is as furniture music.
Enjoyable, like their others.
DNF on this one. I'm sure it's all very impressive, but it didn't hold my attention for very long.
Electronic, ambient. Un poco largo.
Never listened to these before, I like the chilled out electronica mixed with audio snippets. Will definitely listen to more
I really like this, but can't help feeling that it would be just as good at half the length.
Unique sound
Some spooky sounds. Some pretty sounds. Some cool, glitchy sounds. Some boring sounds. Lots of sounds that inspired Thom Yorke. Some highly irregular counting. I’ve changed my mind on this one a few times but I think it warrants credit for creating a distinctive, cohesive mood.
Soft och skön ambient musik. Har några låtar med dem på Spotify. Tyvärr blir det inte så stor variation mellan låtarna.
Some cool tracks but a bit lacklustre for its time
Nice electronic music. Fine
Not my cup of tea, but it's a not-intrusive ambiance sounds good to listen to during work hours.
какая-то тихая электронщина, не напрягло)
I want to really like this but it doesn't do much for me. I'm sure it was influential at the time but I can't help to have large swaths of boredom throughout. My favorite part was at last 15 seconds of "Sixyten", where there is some syncopated synths that throw off an already established rhythmic set of ideas. Everything up until this point is pretty repetitive, a little predictive, and straightforward. Unfortunately the part only lasts for about 15-20 seconds. I think at the time this might have been more of an exploration of classical "new music" with some minimalism as this is what this sounds like, but a more tame version. I've heard people say that they love this band, so I'm sure they are influential and maybe it's just this album that doesn't blow me away.
I really thought I was going to hate this when it started, but it actually had a good beat throughout. Catchy and futuristic, this album is great for casual listening when you're in the mood for electronic music. 'Aquarius' was weird though. "Orange!" "Yeah, that's right!"
Very electronic, atmospheric, ambient, and lo-fi. This kind of music is very trendy in certain groups today, and I had no idea that the sound dated back to the 90s. I imagine that this has had significant impact on similar sounding music of today. This was fine, but it was starting to lull me toward the end. This was probably a really high 2.-something, so I will just not split hairs and may it an even 3.
This one has always felt a bit too loungey for me, likely due to its lack of overwhelming valence like Geogaddi's simmering menace or Campfire's slightly ominous tones. Cohesion and grip lack as a result, but that being said there are no bad Boards of Canada albums - this one is just a bit too free-flowing for my taste.
A great album, the sound is a little dated, specially the drums. But the mood is still great. I think this album would be actually better without the repetitive, kind of boring beat. It would then become a timeless ambient work.
Good beats make a good atmosphere. Could see myself adding this to a "gotta focus on work and drown out the other noises" playlist. Not a million miles away from Blockhead, who I like quite a bit. Can't imagine going to a concert of these guys though.
chill but nothing that makes me go wow
Very mundane. I found it boring. It would be appropriate for a kids party.
I have always found it hard to rate Boards Of Canada because there is a huge discrepancy between my knowledge of how clever and good this is and my enjoyment of listening to it. I understand the warmth and everything, but the ambient soundscapes of this album just don't do anything for me. Personal Enjoyment: 6/10 1001 Album List-worthy: 10/10
I like it, though it’s too long imo.
I’d heard a fair bit of raving about this album but had never given it a listen until now: it certainly wasn’t what I’d expected. I didn’t even realise Boards of Canada were an electronic duo categorised under the (snobbish) umbrella of IDM (intelligent dance music). There isn’t much to dance to in “Music Has the Right to Children”, and I wouldn’t want to equate any work of art with intellectual value, but I can say I found it often compelling and sometimes dull. The tracks are divided into more long-form, beat-driven tracks (done best in “Telephasic Workshop”, “Open the Light”) and shorter segues with either a noodling synth or a repeated vocal sample (done best in “Triangles and Rhombuses”, “Roybgiv”). One of my key takeaways here, regardless of what the band would have wanted, is that this music works just as well in the background as it does up close. Even when the sounds crystallise into a programmed beat to give them a backbone, they are floaty, ephemeral, dreamlike. The effect is of a hazy soundscape where nothing is too distracting or outlandish. It all fits neatly together as a calming soundtrack for our over-saturated 21st century lives, but audiophiles are likely to go beyond that and enjoy the rich depths of the production (especially on headphones). Some of the vocal samples become a bit grating, standing outside of the rest of each composition enough to feel distracting and more than a little dated. The chopped apart ones work just fine as becoming another layer of sound, but the repeated “I… love… you!” early on is trying, not to mention the endless “orange”s in the otherwise superb “Aquarius”. The more I actively listen to it, the more repetitive “Music Has The Right to Children” starts to feel. It’s way outside what I’d normally enjoy or stick on for fun, but I have enjoyed it a lot more than most of the other electronic 90’s albums that have come up so far. Giving it extra points here for its ability to keep me interested throughout, so it just scrapes a 3 star.
Background music, okay to work / focus.
Not sure about this - probably needs to be appreciated in the right time & place.
Already listened to it
Rating: 6/10
This was kind of spooky and off-putting, but I liked parts of it.
Seems like the beginning of ambient electronic as it is known today. Lots of chill, space-y music, good for background soundtrack.
Good background music, no more and no less. An extra point for being (very surprisingly) Scottish!
very interesting idm
2 ambient 4 me
Ambient electronica, not my strong suit but this one was pleasant. Good background noise that also has a touch of gangster
Assuming this was included as a precursor to EDM. It's not terrible, but a little boring.
Electronic, but nothing amazing
Good background music.
ah yes, well.... this is electronic music.
Not really my kind of music but this record does have its moments. I've listened to this album 3 times in the last couple weeks and I will say that each listens opens up new vista's I had yet to hear. Melodies seem more pronounced and varied. Sounds previously unnoticed are now taking up permanent residence in my brain. Monotony is giving way to hypnotic. Thus is the first listen that has made me want to listen again. Starting to get a Miles Davis In a Silent Way vibe, could it grow on me the way that album did? I could definitely see a 4 star rating on the horizon, but for now it's a solid 3.5 🌟
The name Boards of Canada was the extent of my familiarity prior to listening to this album. Early in the album I felt like I was drawn in and enjoying the vibe. Music Has The Right to Children is not my favorite music, but the album is good enough that I would be interested in hearing more of what the band does. As I made my way through the second half, the album started to feel a little long. Repetition within and between the tracks began to distract from my enjoyment of the album as a whole. The album did not quite make a full 4 stars.
Not really my kind of music but this record does have its moments; 3.5 stars
This LP came out at a time when a lot of downtempo has being cranked out. While some of it was outstanding, most of it was pleasant & nice to listen to in the background. I would rate this in the latter category. I've read that this was a landmark and influential electronic release, but similar artists like Nightmares on Wax and Aphex Twin were 5+ years ahead of them.
Nothing offensive here, but also not much that stood out (though i could swear that they should have named at least one song "Orange"... it actually worked for me). An interesting listen.
I know there is an art to this type of music, but I never feel comfortable rating it because I don't understand it. Having said that, it was great background music while working. It kept me interested. I appreciated the way the songs built and then died. Decent.
It's a bit too chill to dance to, but still, a nice electronic album to have on in the background I guess.
Enjoyed this, can't imagine listening to it regularly though
I thought I didn't like it, I wasn't enjoying it, in fact I was barely listening to it at all. But then, slowly, persistently, it crept in, soothing the senses. When it was finished I found myself missing its presence. It's difficult to explain but I don't really think of this as music. It's a mood, an atmosphere that settles in and gets comfy without you noticing.
Like a strange dream that just goes on.
not bad for background music
Werid but good listen
Long album. Focus music. Early for genre.
Usually I don't like techno/electronic music but this album was a bit different. Some songs could be used in some kind of indie game or as a sample.
holdup the name of the band is Boards of Canada but they're Scottish??? Very ambient and trippy
Troubling, at first. Then progresses nicely.
Eez niiice. This is great nearly ambient music. Can listen to it and work. Not good for sleeping - beat is too heavy. But Love this for work.
I judged it way too hard after only seeing the album art. I liked it. It would be good background music.
now.... I don't know what I just listened to but I like it. Very good for concentration
Well done, not really my cuppa but interesting.
Sort of confused by this one. Very pleasant background listening during work though.
Ok as background music
A little too chill for my personal taste, but I'm not much of an EDM person anyway. Not even sure if that is the correct blanked term these days. Not bad to have in the background, though the constant interludes were a bit distracting.
Enjoyed this too.
Wtaf is this
Good for a sensory depravation tank (is it sensory depravation if there’s music?), or also good to listen to while anesthesia kicks in prior to life altering surgery. They misspelled the name. It should be “Boreds of Canada”
Laid back vibes
I definitely enjoy hip-hop instrumental albums but this one was a bit too one note for me. It never really felt exciting at any moment. I did enjoy a few of the tracks that really leaned into the hip-hop influence with more bass heavy beats, but all together the album was a little too sleepy. That being said, creating beats is so accessible today that we are drowning in Soundcloud producers, so maybe this has just made me jaded towards older production styles.
Tranquilo y suave de escuchar
Interesting background gear
It's got good vibes. Kinda boring tho. Maybe in nature and shit
still not super into electronic music but this felt different to me. Where the St etienne album had one or two songs that grabbed me and the rest felt dull - this album didn't have any standouts, but overall gelled with me better. I certainly appreciate the 'IDM' aspect more and while i'm not a huge fan of this, I definitely see how it could have influenced or paved the way for different forms of electronic music that might be more my speed. On a second listen I vibed on it a bit more - it's definitely a sort of 'early electronic music to relax and work to' sort of thing hahaha. Feels similar to the way I listen to modern instrumental prog - throw an album on in the background while focusing on work.
Man. I'm getting some Röyksopp vibes up in here. Maybe some early moby. A little too ambient and weird for my tastes but still enjoyable. The stereo production alone makes this one heck of a "check out these new headphones album". I'll return to this. Likely as a meditative aide. But as Bob Mould would say, don't "file this under easy listening".
Warm ambient electronic sounds
Great ambient beats and music. I was working to it and helped keep me focused. Highlights: -Roygbiv
Another genre where I'm not sure if I lack the sophistication to really hear what's there or if the emperor really does lack clothes. Pleasant enough to listen to.
There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but it's electronica. Amazing electronica sounds marginally more impressive than pretty good electronica. Good background noise, but I probably won't be back for more.
Wasn't that bad, I don't really listen to electronic music often.
It’s good background music. Didn’t like the songs with vocals as much as the ones without. Full disclosure: did not get all the way through.
Meh
Interesting. Nice background music. I wouldn‘t listen to it actively.
This isn’t really my style of music, but it dos fit into a morning work routing nicely.
Nice one, didn't hear it through though
This wasn't too bad, just cruisey electronica or something. I probably won't listen to it ever again, but it was ok to do the WHM breathing to haha.
EDM instrumentals. Decent but need to be in the right mood.
Dreary but efficient background electronica
Was between a 2 and a 3 as didn’t hate this, but would I listen again? No
Um not sure what happened here
ambient que no me entraba del todo ayer
It's pretty chill electro music. Good to fall asleep to, or smoke to, maybe.
I feel like I'm haunted now.
Music Has The Right To Children - Music Has The Right To Children 1998 Music Has The Right To Children ultimately did not give too much, making it a distinctly passable experience. While the underlying ambient techno concepts and vintage textures are clear, the execution fails to leave a lasting impact or offer enough substance to truly captivate. It sits squarely in the middle ground not entirely terrible, but too hollow and uneventful to warrant a higher rating. 2/5
this music is scary, haunting. I kept imagining being stuck in a maze of some PS1 video game. My only beam of sunlight was imagining an addition of Mike Shinoda rapping over some of these tracks. I love you Mike Shinoda. I didn't love this album. Well, not quite. Turns out, it gets more "positive" towards the middle of the album. That is if you are brave enough to listen in. Mike's lyrics would get stronger there ohh yesss. But then you have this track with women counting. Oh no. Awful lot of counting.
What a waste of studio time.
Electronic, groundbreaking fit, best of genre
I'm sure if I was more into electronic music I would understand the significance of this album and how influential it was. As it stands I thought it was just ok and a bit boring. The kind of music you can throw on in the background while working. Too long at times but thats about it. 2.5 rounded down to a 2
Acid trip. Mom come pick me up I’m scared
Soms grappig, maar echt mijn ding niet
Word er een beetje nervous van
I can kind of see why someone would this, but it got pretty repetitive right at the beginning and there wasn’t enough variation to help
2.5. i get the appeal i guess. maybe ill fully get it one day
Although there wasn't anything here to make me sit up and take note, and there's no way I would go out of my way to listen to this again, it wasn't awful. After the first ten minutes or so it slipped into the background, never to return. But the hour or so it lasted wasn't unpleasant. I kind of liked the retro feel, but it just never went anywhere interesting. Two stars.
I get it, but I would not seek this out as a listening experience.
Boring
Eh…
3.5/10 This album is so sterile it can't even get children.
It was just Ok. Barely Ok background music.
Heady, trip hop, psychedelic and vibey electronic album. Boring at times, inspiring and moving at others. There are probably superfans of this album but mostly casuals as it remains kinda niche. Aside from two tracks mostly blase not for me.
Fucking kedelige elektroniske lyde
Not my thing. But interesting.
Music for head shop franchisees. Electronic music more or less all sounds the same to me at least the "earlier" made electronic music. Not offensive but bland and boring.
I really tried
I actually liked some of the tracks, especially Roygbiv. But this will just never be my genre.
cool sounds here but to my uneducated self sounds like an early lofi beats to study to
No thanks.
Not enjoyable...just noise.
Boards of Canada meet the Boreds of Scotland.
It felt like the start of songs...someone was messing around making beats and showcasing them to the rest of the band to make an actual song. Instead it was just unfinished ambient noise
I have a soft spot for 90s electronica, but this felt like amateur hour. It had decent ambience here and there but mostly just felt like they were just playing around with sounds and calling them songs.
It's interesting at least. Good background music while I'm working.
Esta banda es de mis favoritas, de las pocas que me he comprado discos en digital por no encontrarlos de otra forma. Sin embargo, este es su disco que menos me gusta. Se queda con un 2, y recomiendo escuchar otros discos suyos antes que este.
It was ok. Spacey synths, trippy beats, nature documentary samples, noise
I enjoyed the message on the second last song but overall not for me. Sounds like I'm sitting in a hipster bar drinking from old jars while this plays to loud to converse with friends
It's not the worst electronic music I've ever heard. It's still electronic music though.
This aint it
eletrônico não é minha praia, mas a sonoridade mistura elementos interessantes não chega a 6/10 / 3/5, daria 2.5/5 / 5/10 vai 2 mesmo
These guys aren't Canadians. Not even close! Despite feeling cheated, this is actually good news; I like Canadian musicians, and these guys suck.
11/04/2026 The first song was the same as the next song, and the one after that. Proper boring this album. Spotify listeners: 779.7k
Mostly deliberately disconcerting sounds, hardly music at all. At least it's different.
Fortunately, not frustrating enough to get a 1⭐️. It’s not unpleasant. They’re not English, which I think goes a long way in terms of how good or bad electronic music will be. Also fortunately (for me), not so good that I don’t want to say the review I most want to say, which is They should be called I’M Boreds of Canada
It’s like lo fi but not the relaxing kind
Hold music.
EDM is not my thing. 2 stars (It was okay, but not something I would listen to again)
"What if we made an album that was all doctor's office hold music?"
Ikke for mig.
Didn't finish. Kinda noisy.
Sometimes you understand a record but it's just not for you. This is that record.
Stuff like this I'm not really sure why it's on the list. The start is super annoying but there are parts that kind of make you enter a different world
1.5 - Not for me, but it would at least be useful as background music while trying to concentrate.
Interesting in places but not fantastic overall
I wanted to like this but it felt liked Bored of Canada to me
⭐️⭐️
It's fine. I might come back to it as background music while I work, but would I _listen_ to it? Nope.
"Orange!" Not for me.
Was about as exciting as numbers, colors, and shapes
Wanted to like it as ambient work music but it wasn’t even very good at that. I thought I was on hold with a utility company.
As beats go, these are pretty banging. You can kinda groove, but they're not overwhelming or steal your attention. But that feels like exactly the problem: they're beats, not songs. It feels incomplete. They'd be super great as background for a hip hop album or like, the intro to a Muse song.
I miss Apex Twin.
Damn, this shit i weird. But i kinda like it i think. i bit too beep boop for me. Turquoise haxagon sun sounds like an evil beat. This is a bit to experimental for me. I think there is a lot of value to this artistically, especially for its time, but when listening now it mostly sounds like a talented 6-year old with a cool keyboard. The influence this have had on both electronica, hip-hop and other sample heavy genres is very apparent. Songs like Roygbiv could have been released as a lofi hiphop beat right now. The adolescence of these ideas are visible, but very young and not really developed it feels like. Okay the second half of the album is a lot more interesting. So much of modern hip hop and mellow electronica is apparent here and they play with a lot of interesting sounds. I still feel that every song is just waaay too long. It might be the zoomer tiktok brain, but instead of 7 minutes of repetetion, give me 3-4 minutes of concentrated new ideas.
2.5
80's-90's pop country. Very blah. Nothing interesting. No stand-out songs. Pitchfork: 7.5 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #492
If I wanted an hour and ten minutes of hold music, I would have called my insurance provider.
not for me
Total snooze fest. Why is there a woman counting?
strange
Que horrible. Por que hay tanta música aquí que me hace sentir incómodo? Las únicas excepciones fueron Roygib y Olson.
Mellow ambient vibes. Not terrible for work music
Hair salon music.
★★½
Hehehe... Orange
a siren would probably listen to it. Or a raver
Boring
I think they misspelled the first name of this band... Snooze fest, and it just. keeps. going. Which is cool, I guess, is that's what you're looking for.
This is not for me.
Not bad for an electronic album
