Some nice sound choices. Like the more chill songs and the songs with voice samples.
I haven’t heard of them before. They are not Canadian but I am glad they have Canada in their name. The name of the band is inspired by the National Film Board of Canada. Electronic music. Not a big fan. It is supposed to be dance music. Most of the songs you can’t dance. Vocals buried or nonexistent. Most of the songs are a self-indulgent mess. Pretentious. Some tracks are okay. Actually have a beat to it. At least, they are against censorship. A not very good album at all. Two stars.
Once again not my kind of music, but I see how it influenced lots of modern sounds.

I love ambient music, but not for the sake of it. This is okay. Sometimes, it just doesn't flow very well. Glad to finally sit down and listen to it but I won't be rushing back to it.

I really like the the 1001 albums list does not overlook electonica music like this. That said, wow, this is a long album with only a very few flourishes to excite interest along the way. It's cited in its inclusion for its influential nature, so perhaps I'm coming to it too late, after hearing a lot of music that has incorporated techniques and motifs found here. Someone with no prior experience with this kind of music might find this more interesting, if they listen to it with an open mind.

Album #146: Boards of Canada – Music Has the Right to Children ⭐⭐ I studied Music Technology in college. I was very young when I did the course, and the class was made up of all sorts of different people. There were mature students who were grafters, electronic music nerds obsessed with hardware, production geeks fascinated by how dance music was made, pillheads who wanted to make dance music at any cost and complete wasters who didn’t know what they were doing with their lives and somehow ended up there. I was one of the complete wasters. Half the class seemed obsessed with Boards of Canada. They were one of those bands that inspired almost cult-like devotion. For me, though, they just never clicked. That isn’t to say I don’t like this kind of music. Aphex Twin would comfortably be in my top ten artists of all time, maybe even my top five. I absolutely adore his music. Sometimes I listen to it in complete marvel. But I think Aphex Twin has a human quality that Boards of Canada lack. Despite being entirely electronic, his music feels emotional, expressive and alive. Boards of Canada, by comparison, feel detached. I struggle to put my finger on it, but they just don’t move me. There is a lack of beauty. Years after college, I was on a long drive with my now wife, throwing random songs from a playlist through the car stereo. Happy Cycling came on, a Boards of Canada track I’d recently discovered and really liked. By the end of it, she turned to me and begged me to put on something less sleepy. I’m a sponge for other people’s opinions, and ever since then, whenever I think of Boards of Canada, that word immediately comes to mind: sleepy. Now, sleepy could be a good thing! In Boards of Canada’s case, it’s not. I feel bad saying it because it’s such a common and lazy criticism, but I find them boring. A rare feat, because on paper it’s very interesting music. From a production standpoint, the album sounds excellent. The beats are strong, the electronic textures are great, and there’s plenty to admire from a sound design perspective. One of the reasons so many in my class in college gravitated towards them. But the songs themselves rarely go anywhere. There’s very little movement or momentum, and it rarely takes flight. Rarely gets out of first gear. It’s unique, but not engaging. Do you know what it reminds me of? A bad acid trip. My main goal in college was mostly to take as many drugs as possible, and I did exactly that. I had my fair share of bad trips too. Listening to this album reminded me of those experiences, with all these little warped voices and distant samples sounding like paranoid conversations happening just outside your field of vision. It’s an uncomfortable atmosphere, but not in an exciting or frightening way. It’s just unpleasant. I like eerie music. I like unsettling music. I love music that scares me. But this is uncomfortable in a really boring way. It reminds me of working a job you hate, overhearing endless conversations you don’t want to listen to. It’s just oppressive without ever becoming engaging. I struggle to understand the context in which I’d ever choose to listen to this. There are things I genuinely appreciate. There are moments where the album is fantastic. I still think Happy Cycling is a brilliant track, despite what my wife thought. But she was absolutely right when she called it sleepy. And Roygbiv is a moment where the band gets out of their own way and makes something genuinely catchy. But it’s short lived. It feels, like a lot of these songs, like a sketch of a song, rather than a fully fledged song. Finally, I hate One Very Important Thought. Fuck off with your paranoid self-aggrandisement. No one is coming for your music Boards of Canada. A strong two stars, but two stars nonetheless.
Dull but very chill, ambient music. I want to hate on this so bad but most of this seems very happy when there is lyrics. There's children's laughter & talk of love. Part of me thought of whales having sex with modems, while other parts of me pictured the Northern Lights. Sometimes I felt like I was playing the greatest game of Simon ever. It's weird.2

In terms of ambient music, this fits the bill, but is also a little more than that. Moments up upbeat brings this album back to the foreground in whatever I’m doing, and I enjoy it. Overall though, I rarely put it on, too many other albums edge this out.

This album was quite chill but I assume it was maybe intended as a background listen or to be used for soundtracks. Overall, not too bad but quite repetitive. Also, I guess maybe the beginning of LoFi in a way.
Influential as it may be, all I can use it for is background music or I will fall asleep.
Another loading screen album. This was at least somewhat listenable and quite nice as background music while I cooked dinner.
Not _bad_ but honestly just mostly really boring. Music this repetitive just isn't for me - you can put as many sound effects, record scratches, general fuzzy layers... whatever over the top, but if your riff is 3 notes on repeat for 7 minutes I'm not going to have a good time.
So the songs are either forgettable interludes or ambient post-electronica songs that have no right to be 6 minutes long. I think each long song has a moment that is really good but not good enough or built enough to justify each one's length. Roygbiv is the only song that managed to be a short vibe. Quality over quantity. I usually like to think about how much I'd like a live show when trying to judge music. If this was a warm up act I'd love them. This is a vibe for 30 minutes. If they were the main act I'm leaving after 45 minutes. This album is 63 minutes long, I'm tempted to leave after 30. High 2
What is more interesting, this album from one BoC or a rate hike from the other BoC. The answer isn't obvious to me.

Music Has The Right To Children - Music Has The Right To Children 1998 Music Has The Right To Children ultimately did not give too much, making it a distinctly passable experience. While the underlying ambient techno concepts and vintage textures are clear, the execution fails to leave a lasting impact or offer enough substance to truly captivate. It sits squarely in the middle ground not entirely terrible, but too hollow and uneventful to warrant a higher rating. 2/5
this music is scary, haunting. I kept imagining being stuck in a maze of some PS1 video game. My only beam of sunlight was imagining an addition of Mike Shinoda rapping over some of these tracks. I love you Mike Shinoda. I didn't love this album. Well, not quite. Turns out, it gets more "positive" towards the middle of the album. That is if you are brave enough to listen in. Mike's lyrics would get stronger there ohh yesss. But then you have this track with women counting. Oh no. Awful lot of counting.

I'm sure if I was more into electronic music I would understand the significance of this album and how influential it was. As it stands I thought it was just ok and a bit boring. The kind of music you can throw on in the background while working. Too long at times but thats about it. 2.5 rounded down to a 2

Although there wasn't anything here to make me sit up and take note, and there's no way I would go out of my way to listen to this again, it wasn't awful. After the first ten minutes or so it slipped into the background, never to return. But the hour or so it lasted wasn't unpleasant. I kind of liked the retro feel, but it just never went anywhere interesting. Two stars.

Heady, trip hop, psychedelic and vibey electronic album. Boring at times, inspiring and moving at others. There are probably superfans of this album but mostly casuals as it remains kinda niche. Aside from two tracks mostly blase not for me.

It felt like the start of songs...someone was messing around making beats and showcasing them to the rest of the band to make an actual song. Instead it was just unfinished ambient noise
I have a soft spot for 90s electronica, but this felt like amateur hour. It had decent ambience here and there but mostly just felt like they were just playing around with sounds and calling them songs.

Wanted to like it as ambient work music but it wasn’t even very good at that. I thought I was on hold with a utility company.
As beats go, these are pretty banging. You can kinda groove, but they're not overwhelming or steal your attention. But that feels like exactly the problem: they're beats, not songs. It feels incomplete. They'd be super great as background for a hip hop album or like, the intro to a Muse song.

Damn, this shit i weird. But i kinda like it i think. i bit too beep boop for me. Turquoise haxagon sun sounds like an evil beat. This is a bit to experimental for me. I think there is a lot of value to this artistically, especially for its time, but when listening now it mostly sounds like a talented 6-year old with a cool keyboard. The influence this have had on both electronica, hip-hop and other sample heavy genres is very apparent. Songs like Roygbiv could have been released as a lofi hiphop beat right now. The adolescence of these ideas are visible, but very young and not really developed it feels like. Okay the second half of the album is a lot more interesting. So much of modern hip hop and mellow electronica is apparent here and they play with a lot of interesting sounds. I still feel that every song is just waaay too long. It might be the zoomer tiktok brain, but instead of 7 minutes of repetetion, give me 3-4 minutes of concentrated new ideas.

Not bad for an electronic album
Start with a drum loop, add some ethereal synth sounds, throw in a random vocal sample, rinse and repeat and you have this album.

It had something about it, the chill out vibe probably. Not going to listen to it again though.
I would be the first to put my hands up and say that this music is not normally something I'd put on! But was an easy listen, didn't want to turn it off, the beats were good, had a cool psychedelia vibe to it. Reminded me somewhat of DJ Shadow. Well worth the listen, and I'm sure if you're more into this music, you would tell me how great it is and probaly ground breaking, but a unedecated person when it comes to Electronic music, I enjoyed it.

Well made, but makes me feel nothing.
I don't know what this album is for. It's mostly chill, downtempo stuff that would work as background music for working or studying, but it's got that number count in the middle that is actively hostile to that. Maybe an anti-math person would disagree, but I can't use it as work or chore music. It's also too chill to dance, too varied to fall asleep to, too inconsistent to put on at a party, too bland to inspire, and too self-important to discount. It's almost something, and mostly nothing. This is the album version of the color gray.
You’d think a band that has echoes of my favorite musician would be a slam dunk, but anytime I got an inkling of that Tobaxxo sound, it just made me pissed off
Has a pretty chill lofi feeling throughout, which is pretty much the only electronic music I don't hate. Mostly good background music for doing other things, but there are still a lot of drum and base feeling songs, which give me a headache, so... eh. 2/5
Interesting but not my thing
Didn't really get into this one, felt kind of repetitive and it blended together a lot, I listened to it while I was cooking. I didn't start feeling the music and grooving until the very last song of the album, over an hour in. 2/5 stars from me.

Like coming down from a bad shrooms trip in the late 90s. Probably a true story.
I think this album was probably heralded for its creative use of vocals - sampling, chopping, looping - but I found it pretty annoying.
20-30 minutes of this kind of music is good. But an entire hour can feel like a slog. It is cool, it is chill, but maybe a little too chill for a work day.
Probably would have been great if I listened to it high in my room, but I listened to it sober at work, so it just made me want to kill myself.

Lot of mixed feelings on this one. I can grasp the importance of the record and I like some of their later stuff, but it hasn't resonated with me the way I thought it would.
I love the band name, I love the album title, I love the artwork (I love the font!), I have friends who love them - I like what I've read about BoC, and when I hear them referenced anywhere, I feel a warm smug glow because I know who they are... but bloody hell, it's a bit boring, isn't it? It just sounds like everything else by everyone else just like them. I feel like I could probably make a record like this on my phone if I had time to kill. It's a shame, that really is a nice font.
This is kind of funny. I was just listening to a random album drop that came out today of eurorack generated ambient music. I made it 35 minutes and needed something more melodic so I decided to jump over the the albums project and got this album which actually sounds so similar to what I was just listening to. This stuff was so eerie and kind of bad-trippy hahaha. Honestly I didn't really care for it very much and it's possible it's because I was already burnt out on ambient electronic music.
Getting this only a week or so after Aphex Twin, doesn't help this snorefest score. Sure it's meant to be somewhat ambient but still it has so little to offer.

Too slow
Ambient music has always been less inherently interesting to me than music with lyrics, or even just, you know, melody. This wasn't unpleasant sounding, and it can build quite an interesting atmosphere, but it's also not really attention-holding, and is a very long album. I wouldn't mind having this sort of thing on in the background while doing some work that required me to not be distracted by my background music. But when you're trying to think of positives about a piece of art and fall back on the utility of it for getting other stuff done, it sort of tells you everything you need to know
Okay, another album of electronica. Like out of the corner of my eye if I slap on a track I groove on it for a bit, but once I get to 3-4 in a row I get bored. The inventiveness of this saves it to a 2.5, but I can't go above 2 for the album.

This definitely sounds like the precursor to things like chillhop lofi music that I listen to all the time. However, there are some parts of the album that made me pause the music and stop for a little because it was a bit too much. However, I can definitely tell this is a highly inspirational album.
First time listening to this group and this music. I liked the beginning of some of the songs, but the music became quickly repetitive, so what I liked in the beginning changed to just mediocre noise/sound. Most of the music was instrumental although in a few tracks there were words spoken out but not really sung. Not a big fan.

This was one of the longest, most boring albums I had to go through in this challenge. Damn it, It was so boring. Ambiental, electronic and boring. It wasn't unlistenable, that's why it's a 2/5
This was a tough listen. Very boring and uninspired. Soulless, overlong computer programmer noodling. I listened to some similar stuff in the late 90s, early 2000s, but more sample-based and I quickly realized it was the music those people were sampling that truly intetested me, so off I went to 60s and 70s funk, soul, jazz and library music and never looked back.

2.5 Man idk this is my third electronica album in one week and they were all over an hour long and ponderous and maybe I’d like them more if I had more space in between but the algorithm is a fickle beast. In theory I think this is one of the better ones I’ve listened to but I also found it kind of frustratingly twee? How do you make electronica music twee? These guys did it. After it ended Spotify autoplayed other electronica/ambient/noise songs and I thought all of them were better than this.

Reduce the tracks on this down to 50-75% of their current runtime and I could vibe with it.
Passable as a film score, skipable as a stand alone.
There are some good vibes here. But not enough to sustain its long runtime. In the right mindset and atmosphere, I could see myself enjoying this more. If I was listening to this while going on a drive or a walk on a rainy fall day, it might be a 4 star album.

I liked this for a while. Then it just...kept...going. In brief intervals, this would be fine, but it felt more like music played in a Gap in the early 00s. It's fine. Just not for me...most of the time.

I had a couple listens to this album. It was an intriguing and captivating listen. It was great to have it play in the background, there is no real melodies, no real distractions. The music reminds me more of the captivation I have with wind chimes. There is no real predictability to them, it's sporadic, it's susceptible to the randomness of wind gusts. Yet despite this you can listen to it in the background while still being focussed on something else. In this sense this album has some healing properties and is good if you just want something to play in the background while you knock out a deadline or pull some weeds for that matter. If I were to find this in an album create for a low price I would pick it up to put on while doing unfettered tasks at home.
I think my favorite part of this album was the name. I'm not sure what exactly makes this a must listen to album. Perhaps this is another instance of being a product of its time but unless this was literally the first instrumental electronic album ever made (which it might be) I don't see it. Without the context of it being a top 1001 album I likely would have felt differently. All that being said, I still enjoyed the listen because it does cater to my biases, it's just fairly muted, like a watered down Aphex Twin. Also discovered I've had "Roygbiv" on one my my old playlists from almost a decade ago. My thoughts are a bit everywhere with this album. I can't quite decide whether I like it or dislike it. As I'm re-listening to tracks it is starting to grow on me, but my initial impression still stands. Favorite Track: Roygbiv i guess
some genuinely tight beats, but it's really long and the vocal samples are almost without exception, annoying.
There is nothing wrong with this album except for the fact it is extremely boring. Pleasant enough. But boooorrrrinnnnggggggg.

There wasn't much here for me. I forgot I was listening to it at one point.
Nuda z komputera. Najpierw ta płyta była irytująca, potem nużąca a na końcu całkowicie nijaka. Elektronika to chyba mój najmniej lubiany gatunek, ale czasem nawet w niej potrafię znaleźć jakieś perełki. A tu znowu jakieś robotyczno-kosmiczna monotonia. 3/10 i błagam nigdy więcej.
I have called albums soundtracks before. I don't know if it's the right way to put it but to me it sounds like a soundtrack to being alone. It tries to pluck at some feelings which it doesn't always succeed at. But it tries.
Downtempo is one of my least fsvourite subgenres of electronic music. This is not bad, but really boring. 2.5 stars

Great album when look for music to cut commercials to in the early to mid 2000s. Or maybe good music to write to, but not a great album to listen to from start to finish as a music exercise.

Boring
Often when I watch shows on streaming services and in lieu of commercials they will have some sort of title screen displayed with nondescript music playing in the background. Many of these songs remind me of that music. I’m partial to track 13 as it is my last name.

I love electronic music. Tried to love this album, but it just wants to be weird (esp. The Color of the Fire - what's up with that???). I had had enough by the time that I got to Sixtyten and shut it down.
I listened to quite a bit of this type of music back in the early naughties. Though I never heard of this duo, probably because there are much better representatives of the genre, for example "A reminiscent drive".
If I ran a restaurant with a certain vibe, I could see this album being on in the background.

Well, it’s not terrible but it is quite repetitive and dull, and a lot of the tracks don’t really develop into anything. It really reminds me of menu background music from a sci-fi video game.

Album 652 of 1001 Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children (1998) Rating : 2 / 5 More of the electronica I just don't really care for. Much of this is pretty calming and quite serene but doesn't get the musical juices flowing.

Not bad. Electronic music is not usually my thing. This provided a nice calm background noise for my days work. As an employee who walked in and heard it playing said, "It sounds like the music on a video game menu scree." Pretty acurate.
A second day in a row of electronic music, terrific. This one just wasn’t doing it for me.
Pleasantly weird but ultimately boring beep boop sounds.
I imagine that AI music will end up sounding a bit like this, broken and disjointed, as it increasingly learns from other AI songs in an incestuous downward spiral. I highly doubt that it would manage to have the ambience and consistent tonal quality to hold it all together that this album does though. Does that make this album decades ahead of the curve? Only time will tell. If only some of the people on the cover had six fingers. This album is unique in it's own way, sounding simultaneously ethereal, creepy, melancholic and psychedelic. Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy this album, although I can see why others would.

I have tried to get into Boards of Canada for over a decade now and it's never clicked with me. Maybe I just don't like ambient music or whatever it is but it always comes off as boring elevator background music with repetitive beats. This didn't click with me either. If you do like downtempo or ambient electronic music I would suggest Tipper, especially his album Broken Soul Jamboree. It's phenomenal and I can't imagine that any of his music is on this list, despite him being British.
This is alright, if I were huffing airduster in a cool-off tent at a rave. Nothing really inspiring about this low-fi trip-hop, just good background stuff. I'll give this a 2.
This one brings back memories of editing digital maps for hours at a time. It's good music to listen to while doing a more mundane repetitive task. At the same time though I remember Boards being lower in my ranking of this type of music. I have them paired up with the likes of Tycho, Washed Out, FM Attack and Com Truise. Not a bad album but also not the most interesting.
Electronic music. Not my go-to. Would probably be nice for some back-ground, easy listening, white-noise type of music, but on my commute, it was putting me to sleep.
