great background music. would forget I even had it on. not a fan of ambient music but if I were to listen, it would be this.

Background music, good though

not bad

I listen to a lot of music in this space, where it is almost a wallpaper to life rather than actual albums to hone in on. I think the reason that this scores relatively low for me is that I actually occasionally got sucked into paying attention to this - for me this kind of thing works best setting a mood without actually drawing attention to itself. It was still good enough but there were a few points that drew me out of my reverie with it.

Didn't expect much, but did enjoy listening to this in the background while I worked.

Not my genre of choice but I didn’t hate it.

Hey, this album. I've been assembling pre-written reviews for the albums over an hour in length lately. In my long list of to-hear albums, this one has always stuck out to me for how fucking stupid the title is. Anyways, I don't want to come out swinging with the negativity, so I'll instead say that I'm interested in hearing what a Boards of Canada album sounds like. If I'm not mistaken these guys are an experimental rock/electronic band, so I'm happy to be challenged with what I'm about to listen to. Here goes. Well, well, well. Forgive me for judging an album by it's title. This was cool. It's much too fucking long mind you, but it's cool nonetheless. I can definitely see this album getting better with subsequent listens and the runtime is fitting for this album's standing as an atmospheric electronic album. Speaking more on the music itself, it's solid. I can never get enough of these Moog-sounding synths. They have a pretty nice, sleek sound to them and are put to good use across the album's runtime. The compositions of this album are commendable as well, being generally deliberate, purposeful and distinctive. Other embellishments like the jittery, garbled vocal samples are welcome additions and add an interesting rhythm of the music. Overall, this was solid. Whether it claws its way up to a four-star rating remains to be seen, though this stands as one of the better albums I've listened to through this site. Book time. "Some artists make music so unique, they challenge not just your taste but your understanding of music." This album created "...a seismic shift in the electronica scene" by pivoting electronic music towards a soft, melodic sound underscored by darker synths. It "...proved [...] that electronic music was not just intellectually stimulating, it could achieve real emotional depth as well." The album cover is iconic and "...captures the essence of the music with its themes of nostalgia, the natural and the artificial, the sinister and the serene." Wikipedia says this album is an eclectic mix of old synths, a lo-f analogue production, found sounds, samples and hip-hop rhythms. It was beloved by critics at the time of release and has received enduring acclaim in the years since. It only cracked No. 193 on the UK charts and charted nowhere else. Yeah. This album has certainly earned its stripes. I'm honestly favourable to Boards of Canada having a second list album because of illustrious their reputation is and how influential their music has been, though for the time being, I'm content with letting this one through. I cosign this inclusion.

I kept expecting the music to pick up for a while until I realized that this was an ambient album. I was going to give a bad review because I wasn't enjoying it in the beginning, but as it went on I think I started liking the overall sound. Not my favourite, but it's okay. Some parts really reminded me of the Minecraft soundtrack. 3/5

This was solid background electronic music. Not bad.

Actually not a bad soundtrack for a drive up the coast, but I can't imagine actually paying attention to it

A classic of my college years.

too long

I like it when I don't pay attention to it.

This is an album you need to be in the mood for. It’s not something I’d throw on a playlist, but rather an album to put on and just disappear into.

First time listening to them. For some reason I thought they're a rock band and that they're actually from Canada (they're none of those things). The overall vibe of the album was cool albeit not too many tracks stood out. Still something tells me that's a 3/5 album 3/5

I gotta admit, it took me 3 whole days to go through the album. But it was a good experience! I don’t love electronics, but the vibes and beats were fun and chill for some morning writing, which I appreciate :)

Thoughts before listening: Another one of those albums that I have consistently seen highlighted on best of lists, but that I have never really tried to listen to. I feel like it's techno of some sort, and likely better served as background music. Review: You know what, I just bought some new headphones, and this is probably the perfect album to try these bad boys out. This thing sounds amazing. I get bored with this type of music very easily, but it's hard to deny just how effectve this is when played in high fidelity. The music is heavy on the mid-tempo hip hop bass beats with twitchy samples peppered in throughout. It's not dissimilar to music I enjoy from Kid A-era Radiohead, but I need vocals and organic instrumentation for music to really resonate with me. That is missing here. I'll give this 3-stars while acknowledging it is obviously a huge achievement in the world of electronic music.

Who turned on my recorder?

I enjoyed parts of this album immensely, but every time any sort of 'vocalization' came around - ANY type - I was immediately turned off. And by the end I was just ready for something else. Though, the 'bonus track', Happy Cycling, might have been my favorite of the bunch. I want to give it a 4; I just can't.

I think they played this in the lobby of the last hotel I stayed at

Classic of IDM.

Great for not paying attention to

This is a very pleasant sounding album. The sonic textures are rich and calming. It's something I might put on as background music while I write or while my students are working on a project. But what makes the album so chill and unobtrusive also makes it largely forgettable.

This is a nice chill album and fit my mood today. It was like one hour long song. The Orange/Counting song (Aquarius) was odd, but I kinda liked it. I dig the album cover too, it's appealing in a way I can't describe.

It was fine. It reminded me of Orbital, Dorian Concept, and Liminal a little bit. Very vibey, cool, and impressive musically. Overall, I would give it a 3.1/5!

Yeah.. it's not bad, but it's a very hard one to review. It's chill and ambient-y, and sits nicely enough in the background. There's just not really much to grab hold of is there? Nothing about this album is going to excite you, but you might enjoy having it on in a non-committal kind of way.

They were doing some interesting things with fragments of voice sampling and scratchy sounds against synths. I appreciated it more on a intellectual/mathematical level rather than music for pleasure. Favorite songs: Sixtyten, Aquarius

Interesting and exploratory. A different mood, but good in that context.

Pleasantly surprised by this one with no familiarity of the artist. Briefly considered putting it on again to go to sleep to last night. Will probably get added to my playlist of TTRPG background music.

Tranquilamente podrían tener un parentesco con el disco +bien de Gustavo Cerati (?

I know that this is an album that is generally well regarded and has a lot of fans, but I find it way too uneven of a listening experience to be drawn in by it. When the music is great it's really great, but when it's not I find it a chore to get through. Honestly, if I'm ever in the mood for this kind of music, I'll just listen to an Aphex Twin album.

Good but sloggish

More like Bored of Canada. Just kidding. Mellow. No. Offensive, Chill.

Electronica crossed with ambient. Eno could learn something from these guys. Kinda mellow and kinda foot tapping too. And plenty of earworms if you let them burrow into you. Not bad. Telephastic Workshop is superb.

Ambient soundtracky stuff. If a surf documentary got a ahold of this… lookout! Also, would be fun to flow state to, work out, etc.

ambient, i like!

Etwas zu psycho...

Nice great background work music. It's mostly just atmospheric. I may listen to again but not sure it moves me as much as some of the other groups in this type of vibe. I prefer Nightmares on Wax or Mark Farina, stuff with a little more funk and jazz to it. 3/5

This one takes a few tracks to really find its groove, but once it does, it settles into some nice background music. It’s an easy, atmospheric listen overall, even if it never fully demands your attention.

Yep. That's chill electronic music all right

As good as lounge music gets? Not quite, but almost. I like the trip hop influence to the album. The sound is great. Has some good moments. Ultimately it can feel a bit shallow, by resorting to breakbeats and non-sequitur samples, it kinda avoids eye contact a bit. Olsen and Roygbiv stand up pretty well and sound pretty fresh nearly 30 years later.

Never my thing, not bad though!

list would be better with only one downtempo electronic album. this wouldn't be a bad choice, Boards of Canada has a haunting quality missing from the others.

These ambient, electronic albums have been coming up more often for me lately. Kind of diminishes the novelty of the genre to be honest, but that's absolutely no fault of this album. Nice beats here, and a slightly more interesting soundscape compared to other European electronic music from the time. I don't really have many nits to pick here to be honest, maybe some tracks go on longer than they need to. That tends to happen a lot with this type of music, but the mood needs to be set, you know? I can see the influence this may have had on later trip hop artists too.

Neither live or dislike. It’s ambient, background. Neither interesting to me, or boring. Was ok getting ready for work today, but can’t envision any point where I would sit down and listen to this. Doesn’t really elicit or justify a view from me. 3 Star, it’s just there.

Lyder fint men lige langt nok til mig

synth-driven, psychedelic, nostalgic tunes, has the feeling of remembering a childhood experience that never happened

I genuinely thought this was going to be a 90's rock band, what a weird ass name for your SCOTTISH electronica duo, and an even weirder album title. This sounds almost identical to Snivilisation by Orbital but a lot less interesting. The irony is that on Boards of Canada's Spotify profile it says their ".. imaginative, heavily copied sound ..", despite Snivilisation coming out FOUR YEARS earlier. Roygbiv was a great listen. Outside of that, this is great background music. Awesome album to listen to while you're studying or working, but otherwise it's a bit plain Jane, with nothing outstanding apart from Roygbiv. Definitely didn't help with the huge runtime.

This was alright

Tem uma vibe interessante, mas não puxa muito

Me gustó para poner de fondo

Liked this would probably like more on re listens - can tell it’s influence for sure

A group I had never heard of before. I was worried this list was going to be too much classic rock. This was a nice change of pace. Really enjoyed some of these songs. I'm going to have to check out more of their music.

Album #47: Music Has the Right to Children - Boards of Canada Genre (W): Electronic, downtempo, ambient, IDM, trip hop, psychedelia Singles: Aquarius, Telephasic Workshop / Roygbiv I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: This is a strange album, in a way it’s comforting, but it’s also quite disconcerting, especially with The Color of the Fire. Some tracks are pretty groovy though! Favorite songs: Wildlife Analysis, Telephasic Workshop, Triangles and Rhombuses, Sixtyten, Roygbiv, Rue the Whirl, Aquarius, Olson, Smokes Quantity, Open the Light

I like the album name, cover art, and band name. I wanted to like the music too, but it was just OK. I enjoyed aspects of it like the dreaminess, but it was a bit too minimal for me to stay engaged while listening through the entire thing.

I was only introduced to the Boards of Canada a couple of years ago. I like their sound. Though I rarely listen to their music.

I'm probably the outlier but I liked this one. Weird and ambient but still accessible enough to enjoy.

Nice low-fi ambient music that I was somewhat into. Liked Songs Added: Roygbiv

Good background music for reading and doing something that needs chilled music

Ambient music that makes me feel pretty relaxed, I guess. Some of the tracks were interesting, and I really tried to enjoy this as much as so many other people have, but it didn't move me much.

Listened previously. Expectations: Low - Verdict: Very Good - A couple tracks in and I'm enjoying this far more than I remembered. The grooves on Telephasic Workshop, Sixtyten and Roygbiv are huge. The back end of the record is still good but doesn't hold my interest in quite the same way. Very enjoyable listen nonetheless.

This grew on me a lot. Really didn’t fw this at first but honestly really cool and would be fire in a video game …. I got kinda scared when they started saying numbers and colours ngl

Ambient and instrumental

Not sure about this album. On the one hand I like some of the songs and the bands creativity. on the other hand some of the songs simply flow by without any meaning and do not - for me - attract any interest. At some point I tended towards a 4 but no - it's simply not enough.

It’s a masterclass in false nostalgia, blending ambient textures with trip hop beats that sound like they were recorded on decaying tape. While many of us find it to be a perfect, immersive experience that captures the bittersweet haze of childhood, it's truly a test for your patience and mood. If you’re looking for a soundtrack for a productive workday or a late night drive, the vintage synths and Sesame Street-esque samples create a vibe that is uniquely otherworldly. However, if you aren't in the right headspace, or perhaps haven't brought the right chemical assistance, it can easily slip into throbbing tedium.

For having no words, not bad..

This album marks a turning point in electronic music and if you love the genre you'll love this.

endless night drive mood

I learned about a new genre today, IDM (intellectual dance music). I think this would be hard to dance to to be fair. Maybe I'm just not smart enough. Anyways, it was a chill album. I always appreciate electronic music that doesn't sound like the same thing over and over again. There's a pretty varied mix of sounds. Didn't even feel like it was over an hour long.

1/17/25 this some Minecraft music type shit. 5.5/10

I genuinely liked this whole album of [adult swim] bumper music.

This is perfect background music for a time lapse film of sunrises and traffic zipping through a city center. If you told me this was the soundtrack to Koyaanisqatsi, I’d almost believe you. Mercifully, nobody on this album is chanting “Koyaanisqatsi”

Not really my style. Not bad to listen to while writing or working, but didn't really keep my attention.

Great atmosphere and experimental soundscapes.

Lots of interesting sounds here. Quite a lot of creativity. Ideal for a chilled sunny morning but not sure I’d listen to it much outside of this, although I did find listening to this a pleasant experience

Good background music for concentrating. Very of its time.

Hey VSauce, Michael here.

Good album, but not for a road trip. Ooof.

Alright the ending, finally. Wait why is there another 8 minute track?

Didn’t think it was for me until roygbiv. Great to drive to on a cold crisp Kentucky night. Count me in!

Okay but not for me. A lot of it sounds like it should be the score for Stranger Things.

Buena música monótona y bàsica para estudiar o concentrarse. Por momentos tenebrosa que experimenta con sonidos industriales y ambientes oscuros. A lo largo del album se consigue un buen equilibrio de atmósferas que lo hacen menos aburrido.

Second day in a row that I got somebody that was an inspiration for Radiohead. Especially after seeing them live, coincidence? You can certainly hear Kid A and Amnesiac in this one - but also some of the more subtle electronic elements on In Rainbows If you only want to listen to one track, make it “Roygbiv”

Good background music

Like it 3/5

It was good, but just not what I needed on the day I listened to it.

Never heard of them prior to this. Not at all what I expected…

I like boards of canada and I listened tk this during work, which is the only real time for it. I think in my car I'd fall asleep. I also dont think its all that unique although it is beautiful

Interesting but quiet most of the time almost too quiet!

It is certainly a little abstract and trippy, and I enjoyed listening to it. However, it all just sounded the same after a bit and was dragging pretty hard by the end.

Not my usual kind of music but very nice to have in the background

Not really my thing at all but this album is in my collection (though it’s a bit dusty). In the right frame of mind I quite like it. But it doesn’t really set anything much on fire. Not quite chillout, not quite dance which genre-defying is I suppose a good thing, but it lacks a little…

Ugh, not sure what to make of this one by the local lads. I quite like it? That’s damning with faint praise though. I mean, there are other electronic artists I prefer. Nevertheless, it’s a 3.5. To round up or down though?

Instrumental psicodélico. Not bad. 6,5

Boards of Canada's breakthrough album possesses a haunting ambience to go with wordless electronica. It is of a similar vein to Portishead and other electronic bands of its time in shunning dance beats in favour of downtempo psychedelia. On the surface, it is an album that is repetitive and lacks clear melody. But this is an LP that comes to life when wearing headphones, which allows the listener to pickup the more subtle elements of the sound. And where this album lacks in shifting tones and lyrics, it makes up for in creativity and imagination in terms of production technique and "instruments". Granted, it is not the easiest listen, and requires some concentration and a certain mood to enjoy it. But its is something new and unlike most other music, and on the whole the band pulls off the sound well.

This was excellent driving music for a foggy drive through the mountains. I can't say I listened suuuuper carefully, but still quite nice. 3.5

spooky, atmospheric, not something i'd have come across. perfect list album

Fine. Not grating. Also not particularly memorable.

Overall a cool album. Electronic ambient music. Favorite tracks are Turquoise Hexagon Sun, Olson, Pete Standing Alone, Open the Light, Happy Cycling.

I've never really been able to get into this band. And the thing is, I kind of get it. Like I get why this band is beloved. I'm just not the audience. I need like sick headphones and 1000 lines of spreadsheet to program while listening to this. Its so flowy and interesting. But.. it kind of just sounds like background music when you don't care about it that much.

It’s actually nice to listen to - I had zero expectations before listening for the first time

No standouts but inoffensive

This was an ok album nothing that blew me away!

pretty cool but gets a little tiring… good for driving at night through the city though!!

some of these hit harder than others

More like bored of canada amirite

Interesting, but not my thing.

Perfect mellow album for listening to on a Friday afternoon.

6/10 - I can see it being big during its day but nothing really stands out, good background music

This is really good but didn’t leave me feeling really inspired or anything. The downtempo feel is really wel executed but it’s kind of so downtempo it never jazzed me up enough to remember much of it either. A good record but not a great one IMHO.

1 stern

Very excited for this one since it seems to be very important and well received but i've never heard of it or the band! this is the kinds of cluing-in that i started this project for. It's very atmospheric. Im geting the sense that there are no lyrics or whatever in this which is cool i guess. i dont love just pure electronic lyricless stuff like this so im a little biased against it but its definitely good for what it is. Not really my thing, I think, but maybe good kinda exciting ambient music! 10/10 from pitchfork seems gratuitous

Very strong album. Can see why it was so highly reviewed. Not a genre I listen to much and found some songs a bit boring but can see the beauty in it. 3/5 as you can tell it's good but just not my taste.

My memory of this album was much higher than this latest listen. A bit too ambient for my tastes

Blended into the background. Nothing really stuck out.

It was pretty alright.

It was.. alright? Good background music to vibe to, kind of like lo-fi. Given the years, I'd think at the time it might have been pretty more interesting.

A languid, dissociative journey through electronica soundscapes that perfectly evokes the feeling of listening to a soundcloud of low-fi chill-hop beats to study/relax to remixed into a indie horror game soundtrack while the family in the apartment next to you watches PBS loudly--not always the vibe, but perfect when you want that vibe. Best: "Roygbiv" Worst: "The Color of the Fire" (misophonia triggered!)

This album, and Boards of Canada in general, is the kind of music that I appreciate more than I actually enjoy. It certainly not bad and there are many interesting moments throughout this album, but the whole thing is just OK to me. As far as IDM goes, I'll stick to Aphex Twin or Autechre and give Boards of Canada a listen here and there. Key tracks: An Eagle in Your Mind

Not for me

Unmemorable but pleasant — nice background texture, but nothing really sticks

New agey

Too long.

I think this is a really enjoyable record that doesn’t do anything wrong but also feels pretty inconsequential at the same time. (3.5)

I think this is pretty visionary for its time, but now it just sounds like “lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to”. It’s not bad, but not remarkable either.

Not typically my thing, but this album is great for chill vibes.

Interesting

Forse un po' lunghetto. Molto chill

Bored at first but got won over to its relaxed charm

This is kinda just an album of minecraft music discs top to bottom and at first I thought I was reentering the Haunted Dancehall

You could told me this was released 20 years later and I wouldn't have blinked.

Carefully constructed and other-worldly

This brings a very 'jazz' essence for me. Not in the way it sounds, on the face of it, but in its overall energy. It's cool that they could do all this with their instruments and it's certainly not unpleasant to listen to but it feels more like a tapestry of sound that doesn't really take the form of songs or 'tracks' as we know them. It makes for a nice electronic backdrop that I could have on while reading, relaxing or working, without getting distracted. The cover art also feels somehow appropriate in this regard as it shows a group of people, out of focus, distorted by colour and without faces. Somehow while there is something interesting and arresting here, it just lacks a bit of 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺?

Good 90's electronic if not a bit forgettable

At first, I wasn't sure about this album; it sounded very "staticy," but it had started growing on me when I got to Turquoise Hexagon Sun.

Not good, not bad.

Very nostalgic sounding and hazy, I would probably only listen to this as background music since I found myself tuning out a lot (it was pretty long). Parts of it reminded me of the lofi music I used to listen to for studying

Some interesting sounds and landscapes, but nothing mind altering.

I was going back and forth between a 3 star and a 4 star. Ultimately, I don't think I would seek this album out again, which is what led to my decision of 3 stars. That is not to say I did not enjoy my time listening -- the production felt crisp and the atmosphere the album created was entrancing and weird. The samples used throughout were really creative.

Enjoyed some tracks (like turquoise hexagon sun), others gave me anxiety. Innovative, but as much as I like electronic, I also don't enjoy more anxiety than what I'm already prone to. 3*

Really want to get into electronic and everytime I try I’m put off, this didn’t really change anything. Maybe another time in a fresh state of mind

I was warned that I wouldn't like this, but luckily I also got a preview of what I was in for. I really liked this for background working music. I wasn't engaged with it too much but I did like when the bass was boosted and the boomy drums were going. Too long 3/5

I always forget what this album sounds like - before hearing it I just assumed they were punk because of their name. Need more time with it, but enjoyed it more this time around.

The songs are mostly very good individually but it was hard to listen to the whole thing in one go. I prefer Aphex Twin and Oneohtrix for this type of music just because they tend to vary the energy more.

Chilled

It’s good ambient sound. Low-key electronic music. Nothing bad, it’s just a bit too mellow for me

I like the eeriness of The Color of The Fire and Telephasic Workshop. I like the wistfulness of Turquoise Hexagon Sun. Love the tune of Roygbiv and the dreamy nature of Happy Cycling.

Totally understand the criticism of this being a bunch of bleeps and bloops. All I can say is that at certain moments I fell into its vibe. Will I ever seek it out again? Doubtful. But it was a cool experience. 3/5

Decent work music as I enjoy the repetition to help me focus

3.5 stars. The album has a strangely relaxing vibe to it. The issue is the album is far too long. After around the 40 min mark the album becomes a little boring to listen to.

glad they ended One Very Important Thought the way they did. Decent album overall, might listen again as background music. Not great, but truly not terrible.

A tough listen, at least towards the beginning, because of the impenetrable fortress that is An Eagle In Your Mind. Pretty much no melody or (consistent) harmonies/chords to speak of. It's trying so hard to be alien that it forgets to be approachable. But then the disembodied vocals come in with The Color Of The Fire, and you begin to understand what's going on. It's alien music. Music from an alternate timeline, one where humans never existed. It's what I think Radiohead were trying to emulate in 2001 with Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors (a track I will defend until my dying breath), which is admittedly not quite as ear-friendly as Boards of Canada's material here. But Music Has The Right To Children is still not exactly prime radio material, and for that it gets points taken off. Music, first and foremost, needs to sound good. The best tracks are generally the short interludes, which establish a beautiful atmospheric synth theme before fading away after about a minute. "Something something beauty is fickle/transient". Triangles & Rhombuses is the first genuinely great track (I'm a sucker for pulsating synths) and Kaini Industries, Roygbiv, Olson, and One Very Important Thought are also standouts. They're all warm, vibrant tracks without any message to figure out – you can just sit back and take in the cool sounds, wahoo. In contrast, songs like Sixtyten, Smokes Quantity, and the lengthy bonus track Happy Cycling are mainly built from one (mostly-)unchanging percussive rhythm and a few discordant synths, with little vocal snippets occasionally coming in at random. 3/5 Key tracks: Triangles & Rhombuses, Roygbiv, Olson

Enjoyed listening to this album but won't be revising it.

Very ambient, very chill. Pairs well with woodworking or writing love letters.

good nostalgic sounds but tbh boring

Never heard of this artist. Very interesting reading about this via Wiki. Very influential in the electronic scene today. Pretty cool stuff. Not sure if I can last all 18 tracks though. Very chill electronic

This is a very chill vibe. Good to work with in the background. Probably not something I would have listened to on my own, but I’m glad I did. Favorites were Telephastic Workshop, Triangles & Rhombuses, Turquoise Hexagon Sun, and Roygbiv.

Pleasant to read to, would be bad in any other context.

Interesting album. My wife called it "elevator-music" from the other room.

I liked this a lot more than I expected to. It kept my interest much more than most ambient electronic music. It still is background music to me, but more variety in the sonic textures made all the difference for me.

Initially I was very skeptical but it was actually great music to listen to and concentrate on getting work done. Really enjoyed it in the end.

It's got that 90's sound and feel. It's not an artist and, by extension, album I've ever heard of before. It was ok in the main, nothing special. In fact, I can think of plenty of albums of this ilk that were released within +/- 3 years of this one that are better. The standout track is (6) Sixtyten.

78% Best: Turquoise Hexagon Sun; Roygbiv; Rue The Whirl; Aquarius Must-Hear? Not quite

This felt long. I had to keep forcing myself to come back to it. It's good for what it is, but not something I'm going to seek out to listen to again.

Interesting soundsscapes, ahead of its time sounds from this album. Not my thing though I could appreciate it and enjoyed it as background music and possibly as the missing soundtrack to a weird cult film.

War mies chillig zum einschlafen

I thought I’d like this one more than I did. It’s not that it’s bad, I’d just heard so much about it. Wish I’d heard it when it first came out as it would’ve been fresher. Like listening to KLF or Underworld, EDM can be dated pretty quickly. Although I still have a nostalgic soft spot for UW. I’ll give it 3 and make an effort to spend more time with this in case it improves with when/where I listen to it next.

Good background music. Keeps my head bopping to the rhythm, but as usual with this type of music, I get bored fast. Really feels empty without an MC with good flow, rhyming over the top.

It was good background music. It was really easy to work to.

melodramatic look out the bus window & watch the sunny world move by

c: pete standing alone

Good background. 3/5

6/10. It's an intriguing listen, but it isn't really for me.

I'm glad I came back to this. I tried listening and got interrupted. But I enjoyed it a lot more on my second pass. Maybe I acclimated myself, maybe I was just in a more appropriate head space. Good trippy electronica, think 4am rave tracks, leading up to the sunrise set.

3/5 electronic music is not my thing but I liked it

A solid ambient album to relax to, but overall kind of boring

So this was super cool (or at least unexpected, the front cover reminded me of some kind of 70s or 80s band so was expecting that). Reminded me a bit of Bonobo - and then also Massive Attack and also the first Matrix movie (think it came out around the same time as that, think there maybe were some tracks in the movie or the soundtrack that are similar).

A little bit slow and boring, but still decent background music.

I actually didn't mind this, but as is my problem with a lot of instrumental electronica, a lot of the songs are just too long and repetitive. Some of it's kind of pretty, but overall, not my jam. 3 stars.

FAVO: Sixtyten

It's well made, well produced, beautiful and all that. It's just not really my type of thing however. 70 minutes of mostly passive, chill and laid back pieces with barely any singing isn't my type of thing. I can appreciate the work that went into it and as far as the genre goes this is one of my favorite albums in there. But I'd still rather listen to something a bit more active.

I dig the overall sounds and approach of this album. People treating it like it’s the worst thing ever is a bit dramatic, in my opinion. That said, pretty much all of the songs that exceed four minutes overstay their welcome a bit for me, especially for a style of music that’s not inherently my favorite. It may not have the highest ceiling to grow in my ranks, but there is most certainly room for growth, and I’m actively interested in returning to this. 3/5

Not a message Len Houmous agrees with! He’s a firm believer in tightening copywrite laws! I’m a bit more laid back but it’s an understandable view point when almost 99% of music has its roots in what you created! 2.5

This is super overrated. Pitchfork gave it a ten out of ten, which is preposterous. Making electronica requires very little real talent, and this album in general is very pretentious. In the end, my decision came down to this: -1 half star for instrumental quality. You're good with computers, so what? -1 half star for beauty in general there are some really pretty moments. -1 star for good production. -1 star for starting electronica, even though it sucks. Other than that, this album Is pretty mid, and the artists are pretty talentless.

I found it a little too repetitive to the point that I would enjoy how songs opened but would be ready for them to end when they would have over a minute left. I could see myself trying some more albums from this group to see what else they have to offer. Favorite Song: Sixtyten

Listened to this album with my mum. Started off weird but as it continued it got infinitely better. The final songs were beautiful. My mum and I both enjoyed.

В целом приятная электронщина Не на каждый день, но фоново можно без напряга послушать

Kinda strange instrumental vibe but it was cool

Decent chill out music but if goes on for far too long.

I want to like this album more than I do. Roygbiv is great. Rest is good chill background music.

Not something I'd usually listen, never heard of these guys before. It grew on me as the album went on, very ambient at times, at times it felt like the soundtrack to a film, nothing too standout and a little long but unique compared to the list so far.

Sometimes a good ambient sound is just what the doctor ordered. I really liked it.

Great music for the background, but I was not very into this. Decent sounds but electronica has come a long way from this. 2.5/5

This was a good vibe! It was relaxing to work to. Not a lot of music I can. A got more into it as it went along

I didn't hate it. At times, it got kinda creepy, which I dug. But when the electronic drums came in, I lost interest.

It is like Canada...Mehhhh

Pleasantly surprised, I usually hate electronic music.

The album is OK, but nothing special. Unfortunately it is a little boring. Nothing compared to the electronic music I usually prefer to listen to. Boards of Canada could have created a really boring album with "Music Has The Right To Children", what a stupid title. Still 3 stars

This one felt more like a Telephasic Workshop with Triangles & Rhombuses floating around a Turquoise Hexagon Sun.

This is the kind of thing I could put on in the background while I'm working so that I'm not distracted.

The ambient stuff I can't really go wrong with, but they don't do enough for me to seek them out to listen to again. It's nice and calm, but boring. Goes on for too long too

Good Bit long Does the job Chilled

Had its high points and definitely had its points

I actually like electronic music. It can also be repetitive. But I can't do much with this album by a band I've never heard before. It might be suitable as a background soundtrack. But even for that I find it too boring. No, this album didn't bother me, but I wouldn't have missed anything in life if I hadn't listened to it. 3/5

I like that it's accoustic, but the music is a little too weird and stressful to be in the background for my kinda work music.

It got a little long, but it has a few good beats.

That was a cool and interesting experience.

I liked these guys right from the get go - they are/were a Canadian collective and I got turned on to them thru Feist / Kings of Convenience - Feist was one of Boards of Canada : ) Happy Cycling (appropriately) has been in rotation for almost 20 yrs in my spin class

Best listened to in the background where the general sense percolates, the mood is set but the lack of melodic resolution and rote repetition so common in electronic music in the late 90s is minimized. An album worth hearing - as are others in their catalog including their last foray in 2013 - even if it’s not quite ready for prime time.

If you listen to 10 minutes of this you’ve essentially heard the whole thing. It’s tranquil and deep, slow burn electronic music. It’s a vibe setting type of collection that is great for keeping on in the background while you look at avante guarde art.

More like "Bored"s of Canada, amirite? Wait...they're not even from Canada! Anyway... it's an okay album. It's ambient and electronic. It's doesn't demand your attention.

This album might grow on me. It's too long, but I really dig the use of 70s/80s TV special type samples

This ambient sound from post-rock is fine in the background but really doesn't engage us when we're trying to actively engage. It's inoffensive but not something we'd seek out again.

Quite sad when you are at a bonfire and you just can't make the flame bigger.

This was kind of boring for the most part, but I dod find a few parts enjoyable. I thought Roygbiv was the best song...had a nice groove to it. Why did they put scary faceless people on the album cover? I'm going to have nightmares now, thank you.

This is definitely evening music

Comfortably bored of Boards of Canada.

And vice versa, but they asked for Tay-Tay

Took me a while to get on this one's vibe, but I got there eventually, and found myself engaged and relaxed at the same time. Ultimately, not my thing and a little overlong but I have never heard anything quite like it, and it's inclusion here feels justified.

Electronic duo from Scotland, who knew? The music was interesting but I did find the beats a bit repetitive.

Rather repetitive. Would make for decent background music, even to relax to, which I’m sure is what every musicians wants to hear about their music.

Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children It's a chill and relaxing ambient album to hear, with it's own interesting moments here and there. This album is perfect background music for studying/working, it really gets you focused on the chores you're doing. But for only listening to this, it doesn't really offer that much other than calming tunes a lot of the times. Overall, this is good! 1.- Wildlife Analysis = 7/10 2.- An Eagle In Your Mind = 8/10 3.- The Color of the Fire = 6/10 4.- Telephasic Workshop = 8/10 5.- Triangles & Rhombuses = 7/10 6.- Sixtyten = 8/10 7.- Turquoise Hexagon Sun = 8/10 8.- Kaini Industries = 6/10 9.- Bocuma = 7/10 10.- Roygbiv = 9/10 11.- Rue the Whirl = 8/10 12.- Aquarius = 7/10 13.- Olson = 6/10 14.- Pete Standing Alone = 7/10 15.- Smokes Quantity = 8/10 16.- Open the Light = 9/10 17.- One Very Important Thought = 6/10 FINAL SCORE: 7.4/10

Atmospheric and innovative electronic/ambient album from the late 1990s. I liked quite a lot of songs, especially as the album moved forward, though there were a few songs that weren't that great, particularly in the beginning. It's a 70 minutes album meaning it's too long for me - a 50 minutes album would have been more compact and better perhaps...I would give it a 4 but because of its length, it's rounded down to 3.

3 out of 5. First album I've listened to by them. Having heard them before though and learning this is their debut I know things get better on later albums. This one was a slow but does atmosphere well.

Had it my mind that this was a great record, only to realize I had a predisposition for the song roygbiv only. And that happens to take up only 5% of this album so.... It's really just an hour of vibes that are ok

Some good stuff here, but as with the majority of the long electronic albums on here, you probably had to be part of the scene in the 90s to truly appreciate it.

Man, the guys at the Canadian Science Center must love this. 6/10

Music Has The Right to Children (... What a dumb name) by Boards of Canada (... Which is actually a fucking Scottish electronica band who uses "vintage synthesizers, and degraded analog production.... Fuck). This is like elevator rave music. Whenever an album summary mentions "found sound" I cringe. That just means they spent time wailing on different materials to see what it sounded like. Like in the song Turquoise Hexagon Sun. Fairly straightforward trip hop beat.... Ok..... Then they overlay it with the sounds of a crowd of people playing fucking pinball it sounds like..... Wtf. This was very ethereal, lo-fi sound that kinda lulled you into a trance. There were songs that worked, and ones that were just awful. Overall feeling: meh. Favourite songs: Telephasic Workshop, Turquoise Hexagon Sun, Roygbiv, Sixtyten, Rue the Whirl Least favourite songs: The Color of the Fire (...That's not creepy at all...wtf?!? ), Aquarius (random counting.... And children laughing... Annoying as fuck) 3/5

Surprisingly, not so bad!

Scottish? Extremely esoteric name and album title? Weird electronica? You have no idea how much I wanted to love this. Unfortunately it was just...fine. There were a few high points, but otherwise it was perfectly serviceable background music really.

frekar gott, ambient skotið. svipar til brjáns einó. er frekar klístraður í höfðinu, gef þessa aðra. 3,5.

This album definitely ran the gauntlet for my and my opinions on electronic music. On one hand, I love that this album has a share of lofi shorter tracks that are just easy to listen to and don't overstay their welcome. On the other hand, some of the tracks are so repetitive and go on for way too long, though not ad egregiously as other electronic music albums. All in all not too bad. Top tracks: Sixtyten, Roygbiv, Pete Standing Alone

Where are the lyrics?

Kinda cool lo fi electronica.

This is good

Eletrônico/interessante/legal

There definitely is something to be said for albums that felt like they broke new ground when they came out. But not all of these albums remain quite as interesting as time goes on. This is one of them IMO. It is good, but doesn't feel special.

Cool atmospheric

I have no preconceived notion going in; I've never heard Boards Of Canada nor any mention of them. Excited for this clean slate. It took about three tracks in before realizing this wasn't a grandiose instrumental intro; there may be some manipulated speech early on, but there is no singer. That's fine; who needs singers anyway? Generally, Music Has The Right To Children sounds a bit like instrumental Radiohead or Zero 7 with occasionally more optimism and samples. The sound palette is pretty uniform, making the album as a whole seem like one long piece with different movements. Beats are added more to the dreamy atmosphere as the album progresses. Half way through the album, I don't imagine the remainder of the album to have any surprises; Boards of Canada seem determined to ride this vibe for the full duration, and I don't hate it. But it would be nice if they had a few more tricks up their sleeves. "Aquarius" seems like the track that puts all the pieces together; it's got groove, funky bass, vocal samples, and warm pads. "Pete Standing Alone" demonstrates a more sophisticated drum track than typical on the rest of the album. "Open The Light" adds more melody than what is generally present by these chord-driven tracks. Once you accept the lull of the album, the latter quarter does mature from a crawl to a stroll, but there is never a run, let alone a sprint. Smooth sailing and safe landings. No turblance, and no surprises.

Reminds me of when I was a kid, spending the night with my grandparents and had to share a room with my little sister. I would tune the clock radio in our room to album 88, he college station, to listen to while I fell asleep, and I guess this is the sort of music that they had programmed for late Friday nights. There was a lot of stuff similar to this, ambient soundscapes, often surreal or eerie, like you are walking down a foggy alleyway at night, shadows creeping across the walls, then our of nowhere a synthesizer comes tumbling down a flight of stairs. My little sister found it really creepy and hated it lol. I can appreciate this sort of hazy impressionist low-fi. I would have appreciated a bit more song structure or variety on this album, maybe something a bit more dynamic, because it did seem a bit repetitive at times, but maybe that's just the nature of ambient music like this. I did enjoy the concept of the incorporated found recordings and the way it all evoked nostalgia, like wandering around a thrift store, sifting through a box of memorabilia, or watching home movies on Super 8...distant memories receding away.

Solid gaming album.

Great for driving through space I guess

Enjoying this one. Have not heard any songs from this album or band before. (1x) 3 Stars, B

3 stars

Somewhat better than most electronica

Heeft wel iets, maar veel te lang

This is a tough album to rate. I guess I'm not a huge fan of electronic music, as I didn't particularly enjoy the experience of the album. It wasn't bad in the sense that it's poorly made, but the tones, sounds, and overall feeling of the album gave me a vague sense of uneasiness. I especially found the use of sound samples of people's voices to be haunting in an indeterminate way, like they were the sounds of people trapped in the loops of the music. The faceless people on the album art certainly didn't help that. Favorite song: "Sixtyten" Best representation of the album: "

Telephasic Workshop and Roygbiv stand out, but generally I want something else from my electronic music

Electronic, little boring and repetitive

Even though this always gets the plaudits I've always preferred Geogaddi

i love the idea of this record i just don’t love listening to this record

6/10 - they made a lot of crazy noises throughout the album. One of my favorites were when they said orange a bunch. I kind of see why my friend likes them but not 10%.

The highlight here is Roygbiv, but maybe that's because I've heard it before and built some familiarity. Otherwise, I generally like it, but it's a bit background music-y.

An album of a variety of instruments and sounds, mostly pleasant.

yet another album that is good ambient music. I liked this a bit more than some of the other electronic albums. But likely won't be coming back to it for another listen.

For ambient music it was good I guess being in the right mood for it would probably help too

Good electronic album with some psychedelic vibes. Pretty nice!

Not too bad

Ihan pätevää ambienttia. Kaipaan toki vähän selkeempää sykettä. 3/5

Seems like this would be where the music became album oriented listen at home stuff. Will need to spend more time with it.

Enjoyed this, laid back electro sound, but not sure I’ll ever come back to it,

They give a right interpretation of their titles i think

Interesting but not really for me

I like electronic music so this was my jam, although a bit repetitive at times.

Wow, what a roller coaster with this one. I’m not ready for this. And I’m not sure I’ll ever be. Going in, I’m trying to keep an open mind, but I’m still working to wrap my ears around the OG’s of the genre, Kraftwerk or even Brian Eno. Having said all of that, I find this genre an…interesting listen. There’s no doubt a lot of musicality brought to bear from initially incoherent pockets of sound/noise. But beyond a theoretical curiosity, and admittedly some really catchy tunes especially on the front end, nothing moved me on an emotional level. It’s fancy hotel lobby, background music in a hip part of town…🫤

rym 4.00 questo era già nella mia lista di album da ascoltare mi piace ma è un tipo di musica che preferisco ascoltare mentre faccio altro 3/5

I have never heard of this album. I've barely heard of this band. I have no expectations. Electronica. I liked it. Very good stuff. Like background, mood music that also can keep your attention.

Given my appreciation of ambient and having heard all the hype about the Boards of Canada, I wanted to like this record a lot more. Unfortunately, the dream beats really bring it down to an average category—a three it shall be.

I think I had ambiented myself to death by the time these guys appeared an it's not my favourite. Too many annoying samples that repeat (not to a Daft Punk level of annoying but still I find myself skipping tracks for that reason alone). However I love the way this sounds like a 1970s public information film with primitive hokey synth sound effects suddenly dropped acid and drifted off into heat hazy psychedelic nuclear dawn. Or something. Did analogue synths ever sound fatter and more squidgy than in 'ROYGBIV'? Also I wish the shimmering opening of 'Olson' went on longer. Another good footnote album.

I had such high hopes. It ended up being a little dull.

Fav: Aquarius Least Fav: Kaini Industries

Space mountain music

Never heard of them before. P chill.

Music for a comedown from a mushroom trip. Chill and forgettable.

I didn't like the first few tracks from this album at all, they felt too weird, a bit creepy maybe? But as the album went on it wasn't as bad, just an okay album for me though.

Y'know, as atmospheric music, it's really not bad. I don't love the style in general though.

Enjoyed it, especially on a car ride through the Norwegian alpine countryside.

This is a really strong ambient album that’s nice to listen to and flies by, but doesn’t leave too much of an impression on me

Really good

super chill. ultra chill. the chill-est

Maybe with more listening sessions this could be a 4
