A fun Brit power pop jam. I found myself enjoying this more than I expected. I thought it ought to be a 3 and then it ends on such a high note, pushed me to 4 in the end. Well done, lads.
Album #58, Arctic Monkeys, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’m just about old enough to remember how big a deal this album was when it was released. Lad culture was crying out for its new sound and this fit like a glove. But I never really cared for what the lads were listening to at the time, so I’m trying to take this on its own merit. It’s very good. It’s absolutely a product of its time, a proper mid-noughties indie album. A lot of music sounded like this back then, but there’s a sophistication here. You can hear the influence of Gang of Four and The Jam, and in the heavier moments there’s a hint of Queens of the Stone Age and The White Stripes. The musicianship is excellent throughout, but the obvious star is Alex Turner. He’s funny, witty, charming, incisive, and above all else, romantic. His accented singing and phrasing is what really sets them apart from their peers. Most of the songs are great. It’s hard to review tracks you’ve heard so many times, especially ones you’ve almost heard by force because they were everywhere, but they’ve stood the test of time. The only one I don’t like is “Still Take You Home”. Even allowing for the fact it was written by a teenager, the misogyny is hard to ignore. It’s a manky lyric, though I’d say the lads loved it. Was it overhyped at the time? Maybe. But it came out in a period where there wasn’t much better happening in indie and guitar music, so it makes sense. I’m not their biggest fan, but I do appreciate how they’ve evolved over the years. I even like the whole lounge singer persona that Turner has leaned into. It suits the old romantic. Still, this is probably their best album.
I’ve never listed to AM outside of what’s been on the radio. They’re very catchy!
I was pushing 40 when this came out, and it was the first rock album in, oh, maybe five years that really, really grabbed me so. Thrilling stuff! And that includes “Dancefloor” and “When the Sun Goes Down,” of course. But this is a true album, with interesting sounds and thoughts *from start to finish.* I have a soft spot, for example, for “Perhaps Vampires,” which didn’t get a lot of attention. Quality stuff!
Enjoyed a lot, good story telling and theming throughout. Consistent sound. Every song was good, and some were great.
*listened before the project* So AM was not chosen for this list? Crazy.
A Classic There are no favourites here! Rating: 4/5 GEMV (25.03.2026)
Love me some Arctic Monkeys. Mardy Bum and I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor in steady rotation. Good to give the rest of the tracks a listen.
Wasn't familiar with these gents beforehand, but I'm intrigued. Good riffs and strong songwriting, well played and recorded. Not a big fan of the singer's delivery, but I can get past that. The lyrics are almost all about a bunch of lads spending an evening 'round the club, but somehow they manage to stay fresh. It's a little bit punky, a little bit funky, and a lot alternative...and I kinda like it. The bass line on "A Certain Romance" breaks my brain a little, but it's okay. Also, thumbs up for some great song titles (my favorite is "Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But...").
I used to listen to this album in college. Arctic Monkeys and We Are Scientists are quintessential alt rock bands of that time. Arctic Monkeys remind me of my old roommate, Matt Stromberg. Fitting in that time of my life, it's general theme as an album is being a scummy young brit, mostly drinking. "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor" and "Mardy Bum" are bops that we danced to a countless amount of times.

So you are not an excellent album?
nice
yeah, I like it. They're one of the most popular rock bands in the world (top 50 on Spotify). They are not a daily listen for me, but they're good!
Geeeeezer. from ritz to rubble was the best unknown for me. Definitely a classic
I haven't listened to this in at least a decade.... it's still pretty fun.
The best song titles out there
Cold Capuchins
THE album to listen to 20 years ago. Ive moved on now, but its still pretty good and I do look good on the dancefloor
Something I’ve been wanting to listen to for a while but never got around to. Best Song: Probably “A Certain Romance”
Solid Rock album. Surprising amount of moods. A Certain Romance reminds me of my favourite indie band: Reverie Sound Revue. A pleasant surprise!
Rating 8/10 Best Song - Mardy Bum
Excellent record with many memories. It's fast, new, and yet has a resemblance to other great periods of music. A must-have from the 2000s.
My yesterday's album was from Arcade Fire - so terrible I couldn't even finish it. When I got this today, I thought for a second "oh shit another indie cry baby jerking off". Thankfully, it isn't. Thank you Arctic Monkeys.
Peak 00s alternative rock
Very nostalgic about this album and still a pleasure to listen to.
pretty awesome. i somehow always ignored the arctic monkey and i dont know why. reminds me of franz ferdinant and feels very close.
Can't be nuanced about this record, bad memories being drunk at the club with it. Also shout out Kelham Island.
sok jó szám van, de néhány bénácska is
Good album. Love that you can hear his accent when he sings.
If there's one recent group who can do "album rock" well it's AM ; good, cohesive listen w some instant classic singles
Cool album, obviously some songs very familiar. I liked: - I bet you look good on the dancefloor - Red light indicates doors are secured - When the sun goes down The songs are fast, precise and with great choruses. The drums stand out to me.
Music I probably would have been really into if I had listened to it in junior high.
Still a great album.
It’s pretty good, sounds are enjoyable.
Love em!
I did like "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" but I probably have never heard the full album. It has aged surprisingly well!
I do enjoy the artic monkeys
Mardy Bum one of my faves of all time
A very solid debut, though I only knew one song off it (I was big into Favourite Worst Nightmare however). Really unique sound, pretty great album.
good
Me encanto ,sabía de artic monkeys pero no de este álbum. Se convirtió en mi favorito ,tiene ritmos que no imaginaba para la banda. Super cool.
Big fan of Arctic Monkeys, but AM will always be king imo. Love the vocals on the debut album especially, though.
This has that raw, first album sound. Musically it’s great all round, great riffs, bass, drums, and all round energy. Alex Turner’s vocals probably aren’t for everyone but I think it’s perfectly suited. The strong unmistakable north England accent is perfect for the stories he’s telling. There’s an honest realism in how he describes the sleazy, dirty British nightlife experience that is relatable to anyone growing up here. He’s startlingly accurate in descriptions of men trying to pull and calling out exactly what he sees. I haven’t listened to this album for quite a long time and it’s as good as I remember. The songwriting is a mix of slow intricate sections, and lightning fast tempos and heavy riffs, switching almost constantly. One of my top Arctic Monkey tracks has always been When The Sun Goes Down which has a real dark music video featuring Stephen Graham at his best (or worst) playing a horrible character. 4/5
Well I grew up around this album and Artic Monkeys in general being from South Yorkshire, so I'm going to be biased towards it. Unfortunately my favorite Artic Monkeys song, Flourescent Adolescent, is not actually on this album but the next one. I bet you look good on the dancefloor is undeniably the highlight of this album, but on a relisten, I really do like this whole thing. The first three tracks are all extremely strong and "From the Ritz to Rubble" but the rest aren't quite as good. Still a fun listen. It carries a lot of energy, and I can see how complaints could abound about how it represents a watering down of post-punk into the British Rock sound but I think the end result still comes out well. It's not quite a 5, it sounds pretty samey which would be fine if it kept up the content of the first few tracks but it can't quite reach that and so the result is definitely a feeling of having enough of it by the end.
I like this album! This is my typ of musik. I liked that it was a bit Rocky. I didn’t add any songs to my playlist, but i might listen agein to the album.
sure yeah its pretty good, i would listen to it again
This album rocks. Very good debut from a band that improved from here.
Solid British rock with punk energy, guitar and bass propell a lot of track forward with vocals coming in to match at a constant clipped pace. Very enjoyable to listen to and got better on repeats. Saved "Still Take You Home" and find more than half of the album to be an easy re listen.
Great album. A little overplayed in the day, but set the trend for online release and streaming. Plus it covers everything good about Brit Pop and not much of the bad.
i like i bet you look good on the dancefloor and fake tales of san francisco
A love letter to vocal distortion. Catchy pop tunes. Its no wonder these dudes got huge for a bit.
7/10
3.5
i was skeptical going in, because there is only so much i hate more than arctic monkey's most popular songs. i was surprised, i LOVED view from the afternoon and ibylgotdf. the rest is a dip i'd say, i'm not a fan, but it's not as bad as i thought it would be. i'd say this album is actually great, it's just that my taste doesn't let me appreciate it like it should be. it gets 4 stars but i'd understand anyone who'd rate it higher
Tough rate. As much as I love the Arctic Monkeys, don't think I can give this a 5. Lots of good songs on here, but some are pretty mid. Usually Alex Turner can get away with the talk-singing (for me personally), but with this album sounding a bit more raw, didn't work as well. Still a great album and back when the Arctic Monkeys were still good.
Man what happened to the Arctic Monkeys. This shit was so good. Good fun rock idk what this genres actually called. I’m in a hella thrashy mood, my manager can go fuck herself. This is doing it for me. I like. The break at the end of Perhaps Vampires is fucking sick.
Likar Arctic Monkeys. Dei har jo utvikla seg ein del sidan dette IMO, men variert og gøy å høyre på.
Compared to all the other pieces of s I was getting for the past weeks, this is finally some good music. Not my favourite Arctic Monkeys records but still. On the other hand the bar is set so extremely low, that even music heard in a middle scholl band recital was better than some of those "MUST LISTEN TO11!1!one" disasterclasses
I’ve already heard this one! I like it a lot. Some of the best PPR passages of that movement, standout songs (most notably I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and A Certain Romance, in which the latter is one of the better closers of all time), and a very cohesive style that makes it a great experience all around. Great album. 8.9/10
It's so fun when I get an album that not only do I already know but that I absolutely LOVE! What an amazing debut!! So much energy and fun lyrics. It's hard to pick a favorite, but my standouts are The View from the Afternoon, Mardy Bum, When the Sun Goes Down, and A Certain Romance.
I have never listened to the whole album before. Enjoyed it a lot. Mardy Bum and You Look Good on the Dance floor are absolute bangers with great indie energy and bounce. Rest of album is pretty good and I like the slightly sneery vocal delivery. My only complaint would be at times there are a few too many words - I like my indie rock a little bit dumber.
Enjoyed the listen 7/10 for me
Already introduced. Went back to my teenage years. Indie pop rock done right. Nothing more to say.
Remarkably solid and self-assured debut. Turns out that tales of Sheffield teenage nightlife are way more universal than you'd think.
Nothing but belters
fun listen
Very fun listen, lots of energy and heart. Structured very creatively and well though out. Slows down when it needs too but mainly stays at the top.
A good punk album, mixes really good grooves from the bass with simple melodic strums from the guitar, adding in a rough and gritty singing voice for an overall good album, if a bit one note. Favorite song: Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But...
It's a nostalgic noise box, where I'm sad that Alex has forgotten he's not from New York city he's from Sheffield.
Top flight. Can’t believe it is a debut.
Perdón Mariana pequeña por haberme skipeado este álbum
Classic! 8/10
Definitely energetic! Fun. Also a bit busy, but not extremely so
Pretty good great drumming the guitar work is good too vocals are well fitting overall very light and fun listen 8.5-10
Enjoyable, won’t add it to my collection, but decent I’m sure I would love if I was 10 years younger
Better than expected
I feel like this album is the type of music I think of when I think of early 2000s music. This one is a much different sounding album than their 2013 one that I’ve heard and is really popular, which surprised me but I liked!
THIS is what Arctic Monkeys sound like? this whole time??
Really innovative style for the time and now genre defining but same after repeating
Loud, catchy, hooky, riff-filled, pop rock, it is a head-bopping good time. The lyrics are about British youth culture, but have a vapidity that's universal, scarcely venturing outside the night club. But since when do I care about lyrics? This album is a lot of fun to listen to and the nitpicking only starts when trying to distinguish between thoroughly enjoyable and something special, but that something is missing. It's a good time, but perhaps one that feels a little too safe and calculated.
I hadn’t heard this arctic monkeys album before and I liked it! Still like AM better tho
Pretty good
Listened Before: No My sister was obsessed with AM when it came out in 2013 (and I think it might still be her favorite album OAT). I went into this expecting to not really like it but I couldn't help but be charmed by these guys. The Adam Sandler cigarette album gets a 4/5 Playlist add: Mardy Bum
very solid. I like the guitar parts and his British voice. first four songs were prob my faves. 7.3/10
Solid album, love the Arctic Monkeys, hadnt listened to the whole album so glad I did
Enjoyed, latter end tails off slightly but still quite strong energy, if a bit raw. Much better than latter stuff.
A rather pleasant surprise. I used to dismiss these, but really enjoyed this album. Tales of Northern youngster life in the Noughties...including the occasional northern turn of phrase. Love it.
This album stands the test of time. Nights at San Fran dancing to this. Still good.
Memories of 6th form
Loved it at the time, probably prefer most of their other albums now but this still holds up
Cool English post-punk, indie rock album. Through the first 6 songs I was nervous because they all were sounding the same but they added some great variety during the back half. The 20 something going out to the bar crowd is the target audience but still fun for us older heads too
Fantastic debut. Arrived fully formed and smashed it. Not an ounce of fat on these songs. Poetry and bangers…. Straight 4
One of the greatest bands of all time, rock at its finest
If you had asked before I had listened to the album I would have said I am not to enthused with this band but this was incredible. I liked that it was about general life in the UK with a high level of insight and introspection. Not what I expected from them. The tunes are damn catchy too.
The studio debut of a band who went on making some damn beautiful music. This one is very indie, both in sound and production, with neck breaking pace and energy for days. To me, it's a very solid 4 or a lukewarm 5. Not a single skip in this track, on multiple listens.
Great tunes but lack of diversity
Part of me misses this version of Arctic Monkeys when they were more manic/garage-rock than 60s-lounge pop, even if their new stuff is excellent. Remember when it first dropped when I was in high school heard "You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight at Me" on the radio and being transfixed. It packs just as big a punch 20 years later
Un gran tiro!
Sounds like college!
Favorite Track: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
Can’t stop listening to I bet you look good on the dancefloor. Overall great album, takes me back to high school - very nostalgic sound
Fucking good record, I’d heard all of the singles many times. The last track was transcendent
Good energy. Meaningful lyrics
Wow, way better than I thought it was gonna be. I always thought AM were like a soft indie band.
Great album, I’m a sucker for the arctic monkeys. Actually have not listened to this album before so I got some good enjoyment out of it. Only maybe one song I didn’t enjoy a lot but again it fit into the vibe well!
Generally agreeable alt rock that was consistently good throughout the whole album. Good stuff.
An enjoyable, energetic, frantic vision of British youth. I originally discovered a taste for the Arctic Monkeys through their album AM, which featured a more organized and pop-oriented sound, so it was nice to get the original, punk rockier British flavor of the band. Vocals could sound a little too British for me at times (something to be expected in a debut album and is more absent from their future releases), but definitely contribute to the themes of the album. All instruments are catchy and on point, growing tighter and more technical when drawing attention, and leaning into a looser more disorganized sound when the vocals take focus. This provides a nice variety among the songs and showcases that these artists know exactly what sound they are crafting.
Sooo good
Pretty cool indie rock; I liked it!
Starts well but tails off a bit. This punky album was an exciting debut and I much prefer it to the transatlantic rock band Arctic Monkeys have become.
muy bueno, la escalera que hacen con los acordes, el bajo, simplemente uno de los mejores debuts del indie rock britanico
Fainas albumas, nelabai dainos stand outino, manau kai kurios galetu but ilgesnes. Favorites: "Mardy bum", "from the ritz to the bubble" ir "a certain romance". Overall manau vertas dar vieno klausimo
The View from the Afternoon - 4/5 I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - 5/5 Fake Tales of San Francisco - 4/5 Dancing Shoes - 4/5 You Probably Couldn't...- 4/5 Still Take You Home - 4/5 Riot Van - 3.5/5 Red Light..- 4/5 Mardy Bum - 3/5 Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But...- 4/5 When the Sun Goes Down - 4.5/5 From the Ritz to the Rubble - 4/5 A Certain Romance - 4.5/5 Yeah this definitely sounds like the adolescence of a British clubber. Sounds intentionally unpolished. Overall good debut album but everything does feel a bit same-y to its detriment and the slower songs don't really come up to snuff as the other indie-dance songs on the majority of the album. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, When the Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance
i like this shit right here 4/5
Top Songs: The View From the Afternoon I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Dancing Shoes When the Sun Goes Down
damn, i am shocked how much i enjoyed this album. need to reevaluate my life.
I'm a sucker for a Yorkshire accent and a snarky attitude.
I was in high school from 2012-2016 so obviously AM by the Arctic Monkeys was a foundational album for me. They had their signature sound from the start though. A little less commercially catchy, but just as strong. I’ve always loved the production on Alex Turner’s distinct vocals. Not sure how to describe it except to say that it sounds like they were recorded in voice notes without sounding shitty. It’s at least one aspect that led to them being a cornerstone of the indie sleaze scene.
Heard it a million times. Not the Monkeys at their best, but definitely at their most basic. A soundtrack to my teens and one of my favourite albums ever for a long period of time. I don't vibe with it as much as I used to these days, but some tunes (ironically the more mellow ones) still stick in rotation. Maybe it's the fact that some of the bigger, rockier tunes are such staples of British culture these days that you just can't avoid them. Excited to listen all the way through for the first time in a while
Can get a bit samey, but lots of great tracks. Energy and evocative lyrics.
I really enjoy this band!
ALBUM 2 (JANUARY 5) - little behind schedule but i think this album is fair game because i have heard bits of it in the past. FAVORITE SONGS: MARDY BUM :3, riot van, a certain romance, when the sun goes down
Some pretty good memorable songs
I have never listened to the whole album before. Enjoyed it a lot. Mardy Bum and You Look Good on the Dance floor are absolute bangers with great indie energy and bounce. Rest of album is pretty good and I like the slightly sneery vocal delivery. My only complaint would be at times there are a few too many words - I like my indie rock a little bit dumber.
I haven't tended to be a huge Monkeys fan and have never listened to a full album, but my respect for them has grown over their career, especially their irresistible blend of rock meets 50s croon - and these days they have a real sophistication. Not so here. This is continual riffing, absolutely pumping drum beats and thick Sheffield accents spouting lyrics of every day chancers and British references (e.g. Frank Spencer). It's all in the humourously narrative style of their fellow Sheffieldians Pulp. The fact they are unapologetically Northern British is one of the great appeals. Reet good. I love later songs like 'Cornerstone' and '505' and 'Crying Lightning' which all start to get a crooning swagger; but I can't fault this album for youthful punch, being authentic, and be delivered by a fucking good band. Except some of the songs being a bit dull on account of repeating the formula which is a bit of a fault. Easy four.
Really good album!
Fun but angry. Has many heavy bass lines. 4/5 stars
I enjoyed this more now than when it originally came out, didn't realise how good the bass was
Really enjoyed this album! Good lyrics, felt very punk. Listened to this album twice and saved several songs.
Fun listen, had never really listened to Arctic Monkeys much before. Fun upbeat album.
Gold
Pretty good.
Full of really good tunes, but there are a couple I am not as big on
4/5 favorite track : when the sun goes down you know i love some early arctic monkeys. and ya know what? i think this may be my favorite album of theirs, and i’m so glad i finally got to be able to listen to it in full!!
You can hear a lot of the foundation of what they’ll become later. Very Brit punk like in the beginning, with great guitars.
Love this album. Instantly know what the vibe is and it stays consistent from start to finish. Classic pub rock music.
I really like artic monkeys and I have listened to them before so I really enjoyed this album.
There was about a decade of time where I gave up on new music and called everything derivative, with the dumb-name Arctic Monkeys serving as the posterband for my ire. This is the second of their albums on this list, which means it’s the second time I have to repent for my stubbornness. This is loud and bouncy and fun — cornerstone principles of rock music — and their message to cranks like me, still lost in post 9/11 haze, is a spirited anthem: we’re not going to be miserable anymore. I don’t have any connection to it, but I wish I did.
Classic 2000s indie-punk
I remember the excitement I felt when this came out... listening to it now it is still good, the Sheffield accent is still funny, but to me this is no longer a superb record. A nice collection of songs, some of which are really really good. But not a record I feel like is missing from my collection
Pretty sure I heard this album before when it came out but had forgotten about it. Inventive songs, catchy tunes, and good use of instrumentation make this a 4-star for me.
Was soll ich hier sagen? Außer einem kurzen Hänger in der Geradlinigkeit des Albums, gibt es hier nichts dran auszusetzen.
Starkes Album, das einfach nur sehr viel Spaß macht. Kein Absolutes Meisterwerk aber es kratzt dran
I liked it. I'll likely give this one another listen.
it was so fucking good
Nunca tinha ouvido arctic monkeys, gostei. Deu-me vontade de me arranjar e ser melhor do que ontem
Very high energy and fun, but songs do blend into each other somewhat
Moody, captured the British swag of the time perfectly. Cutting lyrics and ironic song titles (Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong(?)). Some songs sound a bit samey after a while but a couple of bangers on here, overall enjoyable and one I'll probably return to
pretty good! i rate it 7/10 just bc there are some parts that dont really suit me but overall good!
i like
I liked it, enjoyable
8/10 This is a great debut. It’s full of energy, drive and pace, but they also do a good job of breaking things up now and again to stop things from getting too relentless. It’s way more punky than I was expecting, but there was plenty of rhythmic quality to it too, with Matt Helders on drums perhaps an underrated highlight of the record. It has a feel of something somewhere between Nirvana and Green Day in some respects, but dragged up through the streets of Sheffield and given a British rock sensibility to it. Alex Turner’s vocal style may not be for everyone, but part of that probably comes down to the fact that he actually sings in his own accent, something that is sorely lacking in modern music, with so many singers just singing in a very generic American-esque accent, regardless of where they’re from. He is weaker when he isn’t singing a more driven song, but when they're going for it, he’s really well suited to the music. There are some obvious highlights here, with the two singles and Mardy Bum particular standouts, but there’s not really much thats particularly weak across the whole album. It does occasionally become a tiny bit repetitive, and the intensity (particularly of the vocal) can become a little much from time to time, but they typically add decent amounts of dynamic shift or rhythmic breaks to let things breathe adequately, which is a decent achievement on an album where the majority of tracks clock in at under 3 minutes. While I don't think it’s entirely the most consistent album, and a few of the tracks don’t manage to quite connect as well as the best songs on the album, it’s a really solid collection of songs and hints at even stronger things to come. The View From The Afternoon - They come out of the blocks flying. There's great pace and attitude to this. They use some interesting rhythmic variations and changes here and there to give the song movement and life. It’s quirky and skittish in places and actually quite heavy in others. A great opener. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - And here comes the massive hit. It might have been overplayed at the time, but it’s one hell of a single. It’s got great swagger, a solid groove and a nice jangly/heavy dynamic change between the verse and chorus. It’s hook city and it’s full of attitude and drive. Excellent. Fake Tales Of San Francisco - This drops things back a bit from a pace point of view. Alex Turner kind of only has one level of delivery which is a bit aggressive for anything that’s not fairly balls out. This has got a decent groove to it, but it’s a little too repetitive and doesn’t manage to gather anything quite as hooky as the last couple of songs. It’s still not bad and the second half brings a nice dynamic switch to keep things moving along. Dancing Shoes - Things pick up again now. Great pace and a more consistent attitude. There are some solid riffs here and it’s got some nice rhythmic stop moments in there that break up the flow really nicely. Another decent one that just smashes its way through and refuses to stick around for long. You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me - And the pace jumps up again here. This is frantic and dives its way through various sections with reckless abandon. It doesn’t necessarily latch on to anything quite as hooky, but the vibe is solid and at just over 2 minutes, does what it does and gets out of the way. Still Take You Home - They are probably more punk than they get credit for. This is another that chips along, but they throw in more rhythmic breaks to prevent things from being too relentless. There's a quite funky little breakdown section in this one too. It just feels fairly chock full of ideas, which is pretty impressive for another sub-3-minute track. Riot Van - This gives us a bit of a pause from the frenetic energy of the album thus far, and Alex Turner actually reins in his aggressive delivery for the first time proper on the album. It’s quite melancholy and kind of pretty. A lovely little interlude. Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured - There’s a solid groove to this, but it still has good drive too and ebbs and flows in intensity. It’s perhaps a little too repetitive with that main riff being a little too prominent for a little too long, but it’s not bad. Mardy Bum - They carry on a bit of that skittish groove here and the switch between the staccato verse and the legato chorus is really nice. It’s really upbeat and has some great melodic choices. It’s a really great pop composition that’s incredibly engaging. Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But.. - The snarling attitude is back. The verse is solid, if a little repetitive, but I really like the rhythmic approach to the chorus. The breakdown section is nice too and builds brilliantly. There’s an edge of Nirvana to it in some respects and then it does a great job of giving a driven, riff heavy ending. It’s a nice switch up to give a more instrumental lead in this one. When The Sun Goes Down - Another really great single. The intro doesn’t really give you a hint of what's about to come, but lulls you in and then you get that punch of riffs. Again, it’s hook city. They drop in little tempo breaks here and there that let you grab a breath and then punch in again. It's really powerful. The drumming on this one is so good, it’s just absolutely balls to the wall. And this is the perfect kind of song for Alex Turner’s voice too. Absolute quality. From The Ritz To The Rubble - We’re back into a bouncing, rolling rhythm here. Again, they throw in really good range for such a short song, a drop out, a build up back to a crescendo at the end. It’s not as consistent as the best songs on the album, with the build up perhaps taking up a bit too much of the runtime, but it’s still got real moments of quality in it. A Certain Romance - This is a bit of a meandering one that just roams about without having much of a central thread to tie it all together that well for me. It’s a shame, really, because it lacks the fire and drive of much of the rest of the album. It’s not bad, it’s just a little bit unfocused. It does improve as it builds towards the end, but it’s a bit of a limp over the line.
Could never live up to the hype I heard at the time it came out, but listening to it now, I like it far more
Pull up to the fuckin pub and vibe type shit.
Rv/g
They were pretty good!
Such a good album - one that I vividly remember from when I was younger, and from back when the Arctic Monkeys were really top of their game and actually good. Had a lot of fun relistening to this again.
A lot of nostalgia here for me.
Just love artic monkeys. Some notable songs were: - a view from the afternoon - I bet you look good on the dancefloor - riot van - mardy bum - when the sun goes down overall solid 8/10 for me
Enjoyed

Favorite Song: A Certain Romance
This was one of the first cds I ever bought. I had good taste! It was all downhill for me after that, apparently. Strange to relisten and notice the trickles of influence that affected my own guitar playing even years afterward. That distorted scratching at the strings that unleashes into overdrive. Yeah, please give me more of that. A question I’ve had since the beginning with these guys is, they’re always singing about clubs and dancing, but this music is hardly something you’d hear played where people go to dance. I can see some head bobbing and mosh pitting, but dancing-shoe dancing, yeah I don’t know about that. What a weird disconnect. Crazy to see the Monkeys are still at it too. They played at the venue next door to me just last summer. I regret not going now.
Solid album, I’d need to listen to it a couple more times to really develop an opinion on it though.
already listened to this - great album but doesn’t even scratch top three arctic monkeys albums for me. i love the grittyness it still keeps compared to their more recent albums and it feels their most authentic sound compared to albums like AM
Rating 8/10 really love the guitar work on the album
Nearly went with a 3, but pushed it to a 4. It's quite enjoyable.
Dancing shoes is yum
I didn’t know artic monkey got like that. Fake tales of San Francisco is a fave so far
CLASSIC ALEXA MARDY BUMMMM
4.5
I wasn't super impressed with the first half of this album, but the downshift to Riot Van and Red Light began what I was hoping to hear all along. Their slower, more melodic songs are great, but the high energy/fast songs of theirs all just sound like they're playing fast for the sake of playing fast ⭐⭐⭐.75
8/10 Favorites: The View From The Afternoon I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor From The Ritz To The Rubble
I bet we'd all look good on the dance floor
I think I liked this more back in the day than I do now - its lustre has faded somewhat over the years for me. Still good, but there are a weaker tracks on it that drag it down a bit.
Pretty solid post punk, not eccentric enough I guess
Enjoyed it thoroughly
I generally like Arctic Monkeys when their music passes through me like neutrinos. I am as equally ultimately unaffacted after, but I'm like, that was kinda cool. They have excellent song titles.
fucking fire
The mid 2000s had a whole spate of British dance rock (is that a thing?) bands like this. Some of them I feel are indistinguishable. I like this music though I don't feel like it will really hold up past the next few years, indeed it has been waning for years now. Interestingly it cropped up around the same time as the stomp, clap, hey! bands that were thankfully short-lived. Not sure why that's significant but it seemed appropriate to mention. I like this album - the band is super tight. Drums are great, though they are kind of dry and I wish they sounded a little fuller. Good guitars, great bass. Vocals are decent, though not the best. This is a hard one for me to rate because it is definitely not a 4 star album for me but I feel like 3 stars is a bit of a disservice. It's better than that. I'd give this a solid 3.6 and I suppose I have to round that up.
fun, rhythmic, some great hooks, sometimes gets a bit too loud and repetitive
2006. This is a rocking dance punk album that has a lineup of hits. Perfect to get you going
Decent throughout but it is all kinda samey. 3.5 ish but will give 4 because I'd rather listen to this than a 3 star album
Fake Tales of San Francisco, Mardy Bum, and Red Light Indicates stood out. Overall solid album.
I didn't want to like this, but it's pretty rockin'.
Great groove throughout the album. I can hear how the Arctic Monkeys influenced alt rock.
One of the few bands / artists that I have liked in the past 20 years
Much better than I thought it was going to be. I always associated this album with the indie sound of the time coming from The Kooks and Razorlight. Particularly liked 'Perhaps Vampires is a bit strong but..' although there were no real duds.
Heard of band not the album. View from the afternoon is a really good start. Great guitar, catchy lyrics. Very British. Cool switch up in the middle. Find myself nodding along. Dance floor is super catchy. Very early 200s pop rock. Great song writing. Honestly wish it was longer. Love the guitar riff on fake tales. This song is really good. Love how it continues to build up as the song goes along. Again, wish it was longer. Not as much of a fan of dancing shoes, a little cheesy lyrics wise. Good guitar solo. “You probably” is fun. Good not great. The song writing throughout the album is really good, I love the story telling. You know nothing is so fun. Song you want to sing along to. Riot van is more of the same in the best way. Red light has the best guitar of any song so far. Not sure how I feel abt the tuning on the vocals but song is really good. More really good song writing on Mardy bum. Don’t know what that means though. Perhaps is pretty good, nothing special. Sweet outro. When the sun goes down is another fun song. Catchy chorus. Awesome bass line on Ritz. Simple guitar but works so well. Songwriting is great as it has been the whole album. Such a good song. Another great bass line on certain romance. Great music, more great songwriting. 5.5 minute outro rocks. Guitar solo in the middle is good as well. This album just kept getting better as I listened to more, and the same can be said for the last song. Banger, great way to close it out. Will have to to listen again soon. 3.7 stars, could end up going up on second listen.
The Arctic Monkeys's debut is a rare paradigm for rock music that's also + before anything else dance music, thanks to Alex Turner's rhythmic sense and funky locution along with Matt Helders's catchy drumming. 'Get off the bandwagon and put down the handbook'; 'Get on your dancing shoes / You sexy little swine.' This means that the band doesn't really give a shit about melodies, and this elision of melody often smacks of a crutch rather than an innovation, but these songs get you off your ass in a real way. Even at their aberrantly contemplative, Turner is the voice of fun and the wisdom to omit all seriousness: 'Oh, those silly boys in blue / Well, they won't catch me and you.' I prefer The Libertines's self-titled second, but this survives.
This is what listening to "classic" albums is about for me. In listening to this album, I developed an appreciation for rock music. I understand from other criticism that WPSIAM isn't the most complex or creative music but that's what makes it easier for a rock newbie to digest. The core elements are all here and executed well - catchy guitar riffs and bass lines, excellent drums that keep you on your toes and of course packages the relatable lyrics through Alex Turner's unique vocals. My first listen through my thoughts were "yep that's the Arctic Monkeys". It was my second listen through with more attention to the lyrics that it resonated with me. I was born in Northern England but moved to Australia when I was young and this album provided a glimpse into what could have been my life - drinking, partying, picking up women (sometimes unsuccessfully) and unsavoury characters. It sounds bleak, and maybe it is, but it pulls at a part of me that yearns to head down the local with the lads and just be an idiot. I like this album but I don't think it is exceptional: 7.5/10
This seemed pretty good to me. One in my listening group really loved it. Best track was From The Ritz To The Rubble IMHO. I thought the clean guitar sound didn't age super well - it's a bit Strokes-ripoff also. Anyway overall this was pretty fun and sounds great and was actually a bit of a surprise to me - I knew of this band and never dug in before.
Love love love Beste sang: when the sun goes down
Fav song: Riot Van Good production and awesome debut for one of the biggest indie bands on the planet. Definitely a product of its time and I find it hard to see past the 'me and the lads are cooler than you' aesthetic now I'm in my 30s, but I'd wager they probably feel the same way too.
Teenage classic. Still sounds so good. Some bum songs on it but the highs are high enough to carry it through. Amazing this isn’t their best album. Animal of a drummer.
Largely irresistible if a bit dated
A brash, snarling leer of an album, full of piss and vinegar. I remember seeing these guys open for The Black Keys and it should have been the other way around. Not a whole lot of variation, lyrically, but it doesn't matter with songs as tight and focused as these. The spirit of punk was alive and well on this album
Aunque este album no sea mi favorito de los monkeys es una buenisima introducción a su estilo, hace mucho no lo escuchaba y me gusto volver. When The Sun Goes Down fue mi cancion favorita muchisimo tiempo, le tengo cariño al album y es bastante iconico Mis favs desde siempre: From The Ritz, When The Sun Goes Down, Mardy Bum
Favs: The View from the Afternoon, Fake Tales of San Francisco, When the Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance
Good album. Love AM, but this isn't my favourite.
I am biased because Arctic Monkeys are pretty high on my list but yeah what's not to love? I'll be fair and give it a 4 because I don't think it's their best album.
One of the few albums so far that I actually knew pretty well. These songs absolutely rip. Takes me back to my iPod days
I LOVE ARCTIC MONKEY!!
symaptoche
Yay
L’album sonne comme des vêtements qui puent la clope et la bière en lendemain de soirée (depuis laquelle tu ne te souviens même plus comment t’es rentrée)
Slaps. Favs: Idk they all slap.
Highly enjoyable rock album. I think I like their other albums a tiny bit better, but this was still great
Would like to give this a 4.5 - good songs but it does sound very 2006 but maybe that is because of my nostalgia too - still good I really like this
Like stumbling into a packed club just as the lights flare and the floor starts to shake, this indie rock album hits with sharp, fast-paced guitar riffs, tight bass lines, and pounding drums bursting with nervous, garage-rock energy; the vocals, quick and sneering, half-sung and half-spat, ride over lyrics steeped in nightlife bravado and social awkwardness—then, just as suddenly, it’s over, leaving your pulse still racing in the afterglow.
I really enjoyed this, annoyingly. Back when this was new the world was drowning in these guys. Despite having great catchy songs we all got so sick of hearing them everywhere that it fostered annoyance and dislike. Now, with time passed since then, it appears I like them again. This stuff is so catchy and cheery sounding, it's impossible to not tap a foot or give in to some air drumming. I wonder how popular they are outside of the UK because they sound so deliciously British I figure they might encounter issues with it elsewhere.
очень хорошо
It’s always fun seeing how a band has evolved when you listen to their older stuff. Really fun listen, has a great raw energy to it that I enjoyed a lot. Best Track: From The Ritz To The Rubble
Such a fun listen … good intro to a band
Now this was interesting. I was expecting quirky alternative spoken word music but this actually rocked. Maneskin definitely influenced by these guys. Absolutely intrigued and want to listen to this again. Really cool stuff here. Certainly not something I’d put in at a party and get everyone into it - it is niche. Jim Carey voice - “I like it a lot.”
4.5
fun!
It's full of energy
Such a competent debut. AM might have better songs but this is a better album.
Felt very nostalgic
Yeah, that's pretty cool.
The best Brit pop album in my opinion. Completely original, fantastic songs.
This was good
I really enjoyed the album, despite not checking the names of tracks as they stood out to me. I think they have a great sound that is distinct. The album gelled well from song to song.
Peak high school nostalgia. The record I probably came closest to knowing how to play front-to-back on the guitar. Admittedly, now that I’m more music literate, it issssss a bit “watered down punk”. But, to a teenager who didn’t know better, this was as rebellious and snarky as music got.
Aldrig riktigt lyssnat på AM. Det är inte riktigt min kopp te i rockgenren, men det är faktiskt tillräckligt bra/roligt/varierande för att ändå få en fyra. Så positivt överraskad.
3.5.
Ahh, yes, there are some absolute bangers on this one. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor gives me goosebumps and When The Sun Goes Down is great for a singalong in a rubbish Sheffield accent. Alex Turner’s lyrics are fantastic, hard to believe he was so young when this came out. Slightly too long and a few too many generic AM sounding tracks brings it down to a 4
I really enjoyed the garage rock revival. I see why people like this band.
This is such a funny (and phenomenal) record when you know their whole discography. Alex stays within such a lane but the music is so brash and loud. As he got more confident, controlled and styled but bigger - so did the band but they got quieter. And one of the great rock singles of this century.
At first I thought it was... fine. Sort of whatever. But it grew on me. It has an energy that their later music lacks. But with good playing. I found myself listening again.
3.5/5
FAVO: I bet you look good on the dancefloor, Dancing Shoes, Vampires is a bit strong... , When the sun goes down, A certain romance
I didn't want to listen to it but it was a nostalgic banger and I didn't realise how many songs I actually knew
Bravo pour les souvenirs
👍👍
Dope
This is making me realize that I've never heard an Arctic Monkeys song in full, let alone a full album, before this. They're like The Strokes but less fuzzy and more fun. More than anything else, this album is a damn fun time. Not particularly deep, but I'm scared of the idea of the cross-eyed guy smoking a cigarette on the cover making deep music, so it's fine. I guess he's no longer cross-eyed or smoking because I said he is, and whatever I say he is is what he isn't. Anyways, the music. Good fun, I really like the majority of the tracks. This band seems pretty good to throw in a party mix of some kind. Much like party music, I started to tune it out at some points, though.
It's a good album for sure, especially for a debut, but it just feels overhyped. Arctic Monkeys was such a big deal when I was a kid (made some of you feel old huh?) but I never really got into them. Is it good? Absolutely. But it's not five stars.
scho vorher kennt und isch halt scho as guats album - mängmol hätt ma d songs aber fast scho zu oft ghört
1. The View From The Afternoon - 6 Great guitar sound with some excellent drums but they drown the lyrics out a bit and the song seems to stutter stop twice which makes it hard to really get into and enjoy it fully. 2. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - 10 Brilliant track. Lyrics are so metaphoric with so many references before a brilliant chorus. The guitar riffs are supreme and are all underpinned by a brilliant drum that is willing to both set pace and roll the song in and out of the next part. 3. Fake Tales of San Francisco - 7 Great instrumental sound. At times the lyrics are excellent and at times they are too repetitive. Still a very enjoyable track. 4. Dancing Shoes - 6 It's an alright track. Nothing overly to rave about but still enjoyable. Right in line with The View From The Afternoon. 5. You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me - 4 Average track. It's not lyrically poor but it's just a snoozer of a track. Definitely one to pass over on the album. 6. Still Take You Home - 7 Very fast track but with a good sound. The lyrics brush up against being too fast to comprehend but they never actually go over the line of becoming incomprehensible. Enjoyable song. 7. Riot Van - 6 Lyrically it's very good. Lot slower a song and it's very much a rebellious youth kind of track. Not bad but not the best thing on the album. 8. Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured - 7 It's a decent track. Right in line with The View From The Afternoon and Dancing Shoes. I am a huge fan of the bass on this track, which I feel elevates the track a little bit more. 9. Mardy Bum - 9 Very good song. Love the lyrics and I feel like the instruments guide the track well, even through the slowing more calming bridge into the outro. 10. Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But... - 8 Good track. Love how the vocals have given way to the instruments which have so much space to just continue on and they do so very well into about two to three different directions. 11. When The Sun Goes Down - 11 The line about Roxanne is absolutely brilliant. Overall, this is a supremely well written track. The instruments and intro so absolutely fantastically as well. 12. From The Ritz To The Rubble - 6 Good track with a good sound. Lyrically I find the track hard to follow a little, which is the intention but it hasn't done anything to up my enjoyment of the track. 13. A Certain Romance - 11 Incredible tack. Instrumentally it's a masterpiece. Lyrically it's incredibly strong. If you've ever been through a hard breakup, you've listened to and maybe even cried to this track. It's an instant classic. Best track on the album by far. Average Rating: 7.54 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 3.77 Rounded Up: 4 Stars
A favorite. Mardy Bum is a perfect little song.
1983 This is a great album, and in my opinion their best work. I have this on my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆ (7/10)
Love the dirty garage sound of this one.
oh HELL YEAH I loooove this band, saw them in concert just fantastic - all the Italian teens singing with a Sheffield accent, lolll. This is a fanTAStic record, Dancing Shoes is my fave, what a kick ass sound, so creative and edgy, great song writing. Reminds me of Morrissey (the writing, so clever) I'd give it a 5 but I want to be careful w my 5s, so 4.5 : ) ps Stu your Odelay review lolllll
Great energy, attitude, and fun. A most welcome addition to rock and roll in the early 2000’s.
While there’s some proper tunes I never got the hype. Lyrically lazy and horrendous in concert. Half the albums proves they could’ve once actually been the brilliance wrongly proclaimed. Shouldn’t have echoed Oasis in making their best song a b-side.
excellent album from an excellent band
Lyrically very strong some of the music is rehashing some of the same ideas. Still a modern classic 4.5*
Fue un álbum interesting.
very good, very close to a 5. i feel this one needs to sit for a bit
Solid album. Very British.
I really like this group but it’s not their best album
This was better than I expected. Interesting and lively with some good variation
It was really good but I’m just don’t feel like I can give it 5 maybe on a re-listen
If only the quality of music stayed this good! The album is completely new to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is great british rock! My rating is teetering between a 3 and a 4, rating it a 4 because I could see myself revisiting this album again.
Not a single bad song here. They're all great. They're just all the same. I need more variety than this.
Not my favorite of theirs, but still what a debut! Alex Turner's poetic take down / send up or British lad culture is astoundingly complex for a teenager. The rest of the band already sound so refined. Really came out of the gate swinging on this one.
i like arctic monkeys and i like this album! i think it's fun, i think the songs are really great and truly a certain romance makes me feel so many things :(
this was actually pretty good. I'm giving it 4 stars
👍🏻👍🏻 enjoyed the album
Really good album actually. First time listening to their music and I quite enjoyed it!
Decent 4
This is raucous and very fun. Much more punk-y than I expected! The basslines and riffs are awesome all over this album. It kind of sounds like a mixture between Blur and Fall Out Boy. This is a loud, live band in this era and it comes across on the record. Just groovy and catchy and very pub-y vibes. I really like Wet Leg and they are definitely very inspired by early Arctic Monkeys. Really enjoyed!
I wasn't on the bar scene in the UK in the mid-2000s, but this sure helps me visualize it! You can almost smell the spilled beer and cheap cologne. I only knew them from the "Dance Floor" single, but the rest of the album lived up to expectations. It plays as a fusion of a lot of different sounds, IMHO, but never strays too far from the central concept: smacking you in the face with smart and catchy beats while the lyrics are shouted with earnest energy. Wikipedia called it a "concept album" focused on Brit pub life, and I can't find a fault in that. A band that I wish I had appreciated more when I was younger, totally missed out on them at the time.
Strong opener, consistent throughout, and a nice closer. 7-8/10
4.5
First time that I’ve give the Arctic Monkeys a full album listen from start to finish! Thought that it was well produced with some great songs. Tunes that I stood out were Fake Tales Of San Francisco and Riot.
one of the best 00’s brit rock
Not my favorite of theirs but really great anyway. Great for indoor bike riding, just fyi.
Released in 2006, this debut feels like a lightning bolt captured in a pint glass. It’s raw, witty, and brimming with youthful energy. Alex Turner’s lyrics are observational gold—sharp, sardonic, and deeply rooted in British nightlife and working-class culture. Tracks like “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” and “When the Sun Goes Down” are instant anthems, but it’s the lesser-known cuts like “Riot Van” and “Mardy Bum” that show the band’s knack for storytelling and mood. Musically, it’s tight and punchy—garage rock with a post-punk edge, driven by Matt Helders’ frenetic drumming and Turner’s charismatic delivery. It’s not just a great debut; it’s a cultural snapshot of mid-2000s Britain, and it still holds up remarkably well.
I bought NME religiously from 2002-2005. Every week another must-hear indie guitar band was on the cover… The Strokes, Libertines, The Hives, The Vines, White Stripes, Interpol, Muse, The Coral, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, King of Leon, Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, Bloc Party… Arctic Monkeys were the top of the rollercoaster just before the decline towards landfill indie …Fratellis, Pigeon Detectives, Wombats, Scouting for Girls, The Kooks Jesus Christ did it fall off quickly. I wasn’t sure which side of the line this album would fall 20 years on since I first heard it. Glad to say it still holds up.
I wasn't familiar with the Arctic Monkeys beyond just recognizing the band name. This is a really good debut. I'm guessing I'd be rating it more highly if I'd heard it closer to 2006. Highlight: "The View From the Afternoon"
Dismissed them at the time, didn't know how good rock had it back then
I think once I really start listening to this album more, I will really enjoy it.
This album definitely has grown on me over time. Not my first listen and probably won't be my last. Feels raw and unpolished, but in a good way. The wall of sound from the drums, stop start guitars, interesting bass lines, all a product of the time when garage rock was big. Not perfect by any means but very strong all round.
Great album. Has a throwback, post-punk feel and is much more raw than their later material.
Not offensive but nothing amazing 3.7
It's arctic monkeys I'm never mad at arctic monkeys Love mardy bum
It's got that one bop and then some other songs that are also there.
Very raw. Definitely worth a listen. Brings me back to my college days.
3.5
banger. such a strong debut album with so many memorable moments. a certain romance is maybe a top 25 song of all time for me. sounds silly to say after writing all of that - it's not my favorite AM album but that's just my subjective take. objectively, a great listen. 4/5.
a rock/punk combo with a bit of a primus feeling to it. Overall Arctic monkeys seem like something I should be hearing regularly. Not sure why I haven't listened to them more
Just listening to this in isolation, you wouldn't know it was their debut album. But for a debut album, hot damn. Maybe a 4/5 is a bit too generous if I were to split hairs and a 3/5 would be appropriate because the album is a bit rough around the edges. But I really liked it anyways so I'm giving it a solid 4/5.
Great album. I've always been an Arctic Monkeys fan. While this isn't the perfect album packed with #1s that is AM, I appreciate the less refined, more raw feel.
it took me until listening to a few songs back to back to realize that they are british... embarrassing! Very enjoyable album
Totally missed this when it first came out. It feels very of the time, that early to mid aughts garage rock sound. My brain somehow conflates them with Imagine Dragons and 21 Pilots and I really don't know why. That's pretty unfair to them. And honestly, pretty unfair to me, I don't wanna even think of that other bands.
Yeah, this slaps. I'm a pretty big Arctic Monkeys fan but I never listened to this one before this. I'll give it a 4. However, I think Favourite Worst Nightmare and AM deserve a spot on here more.
Really good album. I was really excited when it popped up and enjoyed it for hours.
a personal classic. <3 feels like a product of it’s time in a really good way. i love it lots
Clearly should have given this more listens beyond Dancefloor upon initial release. Really enjoyed this.
4.5 - senai pažįstamas, turi puikių bangerių
Really enjoyed it.
Pre crooning pub ballads.
Very nostalgic for me, used to listen to this album alot when i was 14/15. Still loved it!
