best arctic monkeys album and one of my favorite debut albums
Great album, grungy feel, upbeat
I bet you look good on the dancefloor the view from the afternoon from the ritz to the rubble которые ребята играют по сей день на концертах, и Алекс исполняет их уже совсем другим голосом 🤩🖤 идругиепеснитожезабойные вот поклонники очень любят этот альбом и жалуются, что невозможно слушать невероятно мелодичный и красивый (как по мне) the car я, в свою очередь, раньше не очень любила ранние альбомы а сейчас заценила 5/5 люблюобожаю
Really enjoyed this, blast of fresh air
Brilliant. From start to finish. Superb.
Incredible really. The natural progression of where punk/grunge/garage should grow up to. Cool history of being on the edge of internet stardom, but not part of the corporate machine.
"I bet you look good on the dancefloor" got me listening to the Arctic Monkeys already quite some years ago. After listening to this album the first time I was sold. And although they have made some great music over the years, this first album remains my personal favorite.
I have mixed feelings about Arctic Monkeys. They fulfil so many of the criteria for being that Beatles-esque, generation-defining band that all the critics clearly want them to be (a gang of smart, witty northern upstarts that represented the youth of the day and took the charts by storm, then experimented and evolved on their own terms while still staying massive), but ultimately fall short due to a smattering of dull releases and lacklustre performances. The acclaim seems to keep coming regardless, which makes it harder to be a fan, I find. There’s no doubt that when they get it right they’re a great band though, and this album is one of those occasions. The lyrics and drumming were always the highlights: hearing Alex Turner rhyme ‘dancefloor’ with ‘romance or’ was the first time I knew these guys had something, and learning to drum along with The View From the Afternoon is a proud teenage memory of mine. I always thought some of the weaker tunes were a bit pedestrian, musically, but returning to them now they sound more full of life and youth than I remember. 4.5
Just a nice album really, doesn't really have any boring moments and every song kinda just works
The songs are fantastic, the pacing is good, it feels like a whole album. I could listen to this album any time of the day.
This album is right there at the start of my concious musical discovery. Still great today. Has the early raw energy of the band and at the same time sets a mood like only Alex Turner can in songs like Riot Van.
Lively and urgent
Classic I adored as a teenager
Garage band fun, but an upscale garage, with epoxy floors and glass doors
cool

This is without a doubt one of the best debut albums ever, the sound, guitar, drums, vocal’s everything about this album I love. From the start its non-stop with tune after tune. The second track ‘ I bet you look good on the Dancefloor‘ is top 3 favourite tracks from this album. The second side is slightly slower paced but still the energy’s high with tracks of ‘Mary’s bum’ and the all time classic ‘ when the Sun goes Down‘ this album is so good and honestly nothing bad about it. I give it a rating of 5/5
This is the 8th album since I've started and it's the first one that I know and love. I may not be very objective as it's been one of my favorites for a long time and brings back a lot of memories. It's a perfect mix of garage rock and dance and lyrics tell simple stories of a life as a teenager/early adult that bring out a lot of nostalgia for me. Favorite tracks: I bet you look good on the dancefloor, When the sun goes down, A certain romance. 5/5
A wonderful surprise. I knew a couple of the tracks but the overall package is sensational - a spitting, snarling record dripping with attitude and menace. It all sounds of a piece, the spiky instrumentation and sweaty post-punk compositions matching the lyric sheet. And what lyrics! Dipping into street vernacular, the whole thing sounds so desperate and sleazy that you imagine the record leaving a stain on your stereo. A triumph. Gonna buy a copy tomorrow.
one of my favourite. such a good album.
Upon its release this album became the fastest selling debut album of all time, in the UK, and it still holds that record. The album sparked a cultural revolution in Britain which no band has come close to since, most new UK bands now try to sound like Arctic monkeys. Alex turner's lyrics perfectly describe a night out in a northern town, in England, with witty lyrics accompanied by raw sounding guitars and creative riffs. Matt helders also provides hard hitting drum tracks. Best tracks: view from the afternoon, fake tales of San Francisco, when the sun goes down, mardy bum, a certain romance. Worst tracks: no bad tracks imo. Easily one of my favourite albums ever made.
Excellent album! Not a single bad song. One of the best so far and I'm already halfway through.
Austin says to give this a 5
Great debut album that explodes with energy and attitude. I would have loved it if i was a few years younger. I’d kind of lost interest in indie/guitar band music during this period but this still stood out at the time. The themes do get a bit samey towards the end: pubs/bouncers/coppers/clubs but it’s still an easy 5 stars for me.
really good britrock
Brilliant debut. All-time classic.
One of the greatest albums of the 2000s. Classic alternative rock.
It was outstanding then, it’s outstanding now. I wouldn’t skip a second of it!
Liked
This is one of my favourite debut albums of all time. The Arctic Monkeys are my favourite band so of course this album is one of my favourites. Personally I think there are no skips. My top 3 songs would be: - From the Ritz to the Rubble - Fake Tales of San Francisco - Perhaps vampires is a bit strong
Catchy, bold, melodic, sharp, clean: an ultimate pop/rock album.
Dancing shoes, Riot van, When the sun goes down, from Ritz to the rouble, A certain romance... just to list a few of my faves this album is loaded with exceptional songs and it's hard to pick just one or two to praise.
Good album, a little too grungy at times for me, but still great!
Whole album good
Ok
A classic worthy of the moniker. Witty, catchy tunes
F-ing marvelous. Solid gold songwriting, attitude and riffs.
We all have the generation al album of our teen years and this is mine!
What a ride the Arctic Monkeys took me on. I had pretty low expectations; I'd never listened before honestly because when I was younger I thought the band's name was stupid. Turns out 'I' was being stupid! A fantastic, rocking romp by this British band. You can listen for the lyrics, or listen for the instrumentals, or both! It's one of those albums that excels at all the pieces it tries to nail. Will definitely be listening to it again.
Whatever People Say This Album Is, I'm Rating It 5 Stars
Oh, right. It's that British White Stripes band. At least, that's how I mentally categorized them back when this album came out. Just another copycat. But, with the clarity of hindsight and the perspective of the intervening years, I think I was being unfair. There's a lot going on here that's unique and delightful. The lyrics, in particular, are really stinkin' clever. Add to that a sound that's utterly relentless and you've got some pretty great songwriting. It's an album that never lets the listener sit back and relax. Once you hit play, you're on the hook. And I'm here for that. In fact, after listening to the whole thing, I think it's not so much an imitation of White Stripes as it is an evolution of the sound. I think that, on balance, this is superior. I didn't expect to give Arctic Monkeys full marks but here we are.
Still sounds great.
Good album
Yet another band that I've slept on for reasons I don't know. This was a banger and now I have to dive deeper into their discography. A fantastic album from start to finish.
5, too good
Cult for a reason. Theses tunes are all full of enough energy to make you dance all night long
Always enjoy this album their best work
Excellent, a fresh take on the concept album. Don't much like the dischordant jerky guitars, but this was a ground breaking piece of work.
Amazing debut. Great garage rock album and one of the earliest examples of internet fame translating into a massive success. I love this album and keepnit in constant rotation. It's hard for me to find a bad track here.
perfect what else should I say? Perfectly captures 00s nostalgia and the accents are just superb. Always worth a listen.
Like a simultaneous breath of fresh air and a bolt of lightning, Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys blazed their way towards the well travelled roads of British indie and added new perspectives in dizzying wordplay and tightly constructed instrumentation, whilst using the novel advantage of the internet to the lexicon of how to create lasting impacts. What followed is a career that has led towards twists and turns that only the Monkeys can take, with the aplomb and ambition that few groups of their ilk could muster and master and they wouldn't have gotten there if they hadn't made this album. What a stellar debut album, what a band they'll be.
Very good track lengths and they flow into each other well This is kinda a fav album?
wow. I'd only ever heard their singles before this album, I had no idea that they rocked this hard. pretty kickass album with lots of good guitar parts.
wish they still sounded like this
Probably their best album
Super first album.
Got to be 5 stars
Artic Monkeys are one of those bands that's peppered through my listening history so it was nice to sit down and listen through this album. I found it very enjoyable and keen to hear again. Love the accent and the stories. Fave: Fake Tales Of San Francisco
It's been a long while since I've listened to this in full, but it's proper good. Brilliant lyrics but it doesn't drag. Bit dated these days (I never even had a phone where pressing star after unlock was a thing) but love a bit of Monkeys.
It's a perfect album less some recording quirks picked up on this time around. There's a perfect LP flip and an immaculate run of songs from A6 to B1 and B2. Plays like very few concept albums can with its flow and false starts and stops, packs so much with so little into forty minutes.
Solid.
Could easily be a contender for greatest debut album ever. How a band so young could sound so assured is extraordinary. Turner is a genius observer of the world around him, conjuring up portraits of late night Sheffield. And the music is so so good, catchy and exuberant and thrilling rock. Do believe the hype.
Exuberant, observant, gritty
Este disco me encanta!!!
Yes yes yes. Listen to Alex Turner?? YES
Not a bad tune on this. Keeps you up and listening to every hilarious second.
6/5
Classic
One of the best
SOLID BOPS An album that was huuuge for me growing up, and still holds up SO WELL I forgot how much I love the energy of Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But... A Certain Romance is such a perfect closer I can't list faves because they're all faves
Reyt good this. 100% biased by nostalgia but there's just so many bangers.
I still think this is a fun and solid album!! When the sun goes down is honestly my favourite Arctic Monkeys song and when I saw them back at reading fest I’m like 75% sure someone threw a cup of pee at me during I bet you look good on the dance floor but it was so fun I leant into the 25% chance it was apple juice and had a lovely time. Good album fun tunes. The CD of this had lots of cigarettes on it and mum didn’t let us play it so it feels a lil rebellious too.
Absolutely refreshing take on all music that had preceded it. Poppy, punk, indie, catchy and danceable all at once. Some of the most arresting songs of the decade. All on a debut album. Cover art 3/5. Striking in its own way and explains the attitude on the album
Sound of our generation ennit. What an excellent album, not a bad track on it. Such a sound and just holds a perfect memory in space and time for me. Shame they got shit.
Best album from the 00s indie era (from Britain anyway). Great story telling and so much energy
Still sounds great today. Minor quibbles with the guitar tones but songwriting, performance and vibe are just legit
Fantastic album. Wasn’t a fan of them until I heard this album just this Friday
Love the energy. The world needs more artic monkeys
Top notch album one of my favs
I used to listen to the songs in this album a lot when I was 16. Never stoped to listen to it as a whole, though. It has a really youthful theme, some shallow, funny and annoying situations of young adulthood. I love it.
A great album with a real range of banging songs on it. Probably my favourite debut album. 9/10
This made me feel nostalgic. Favourite Songs: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, Mardy Bum, When the Sun Goes Down, From the Ritz to the Rubble
A masterpiece. Such an amazing debut from the Arctic Monkeys
Love this band.
An obvious five plus for me considering its my all time favourite album ever of all time. No bad songs. Could do a six paragraph op ed on the birth of the new frontier of indie guitar bands but will save it for another time
Damn I love this album
Loved it!
Great album! Maybe it is a bit generic, but I am not very familiar with this genre of music, so I wouldn't know.
Awesome album! Great example of indie "post-punk".
High paced indie rock that brings everything to the table. Starts and never lets up. Highlight Tracks: 1, 2, 9, 11, 13
Bangers
I never want to become a person who doesn't think 'get on your dancing shoes, you sexy little swine' is not a brilliant lyric to open a song with. This is essentially the soundtrack to my first year at university. I have a great memory of my friend whose American and really into AM get so excited the first time we got in a taxi and he saw the "red lights indicate doors are secure" sticker!
I was really impressed...
Well this goes straight to the top of my "knew they were critically acclaimed but never sought them out" surprise list. And another one that I can't find anything that I don't like and nothing else that I would ask for. Listened three times. Every song hits. Noticed the bass lines and drums a lot more in the repeat playings. Great energy without being screamy or annoying and lyrically great without being complicated or pretentious. Definitely checking out the rest of their catalog now.
Þetta er svo ógeðslega töff plata!
I'd heard I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor on the radio and thought it was alright - not amazing, but not crap either. Then a mate played me the full album and I got it. This would easily go into my top 10 albums of all time.
amazinnng
One of the great debut albums. There was nothing like it when it was released. Witty, gritty, loud and demanding endless replays. Lots of stand out tracks too.
ысф
Still sounds like an unbelievably assured debut
Fav albums of all time
A good bit of sticky romance, loved this when it came out. Was tossing up between 4 and 5, 5 stars firmed up the more I listened
So that album remembered me about my school days and my first relations with a guy who loved old tracks by Arctic Monkeys
Super fun.
the bass line is hot asf and i really love this album. overall fun time blaring arctic monkeys on the speakers especially when the sun goes down.
Fun
I really enjoyed this one. Especially the excellent instrumentation. I've listened to Arctic Monkeys and enjoyed them in the past, but not this particularly album. I can't listen to them for too long in one go, as I find them a bit too hectic for that. But I do feel like I could listen to them more often and check out their other albums.
Energetic like only young new bands can record. Witty like the best writers and sung in Sheffield vernacular too. Great fun.
One of the greatest debut albums of all time
It's 5 stars. We all know that.
Grandisimo disco.
Masterpiece for a debut.
A disc i heard a lot of times. It´s a refreshing young version of rock that we need in those years of the begining of XXIº century. By the way, i love song called "I bet you look good on the dancefloor". Very coloured songs.
Didn't even need to listen to this one I know every word
A modern day punk record you can dance to. For a debut album it’s a masterclass in rocking out and having a blast while doing it. Every track is cool and riffy and flying through at the speed of sound.
I've loved this album for a couple years now so this will be biased. My favorite project from the the band even though AM is more popular and has a more pop-y sound. You can hear the grit of the concerts in the music.
Amazing album. In my personal opinion the Article Monkeys best. This album just has such great energy to it. The whole thing feels like a night out in bars and clubs. One of my all time favourites.
Love this album!
Ferocious and snarky dance punk that hits hard from the first to last track! Somehow I overlooked this band when I was in high school and only really ever listened to the singles. Will have this one on repeat for a while.
One of the best debuts in the last 30 years. When the Sun Goes Down is one of the greatest riffs in indie rock.
good
No other album has had such an impact on me.
You kiddin
***FIRE EMOJI***
I forgot all about these guys. Great album from start to finish!
great album, extremely bri’ish.
Really liked this! High energy but I stayed with it all the way through. Will definitely relisten, maybe a 9 from me
This album reminds me of my teenage years. Dirty guitars, funny lyrics, MASSIVE drumming. One of the best first albums by a band in rock history. I'll keep listen to it for the rest of my life.
Where I was in my teenage years for not listen to this all day? I recognize the most famous songs, but the whole album is great!
I loved this album. Great stuff. Right in my wheelhouse
Nice. Reminds me of the best of the punk era, with perhaps a bit better guitar playing.
5
Absolute banger
ah sim macaquinhos do arctico
great album
Detta gillar jag.
Good sound, some great tunes, but half of it is a bit half baked
It's a decent album. It's not my favorite, but it's still pretty good. I'd say it's definitely more rock-oriented than their other albums. There are better albums, but I think it deserves it's spot on here.
an impressive debut. lots of energy. it's catchy. interesting enough i’d only heard “dancing shoes” but it was a burns vista social club mashup thing. worked really well. the only album i had previously heard was "a.m." which i liked quite a bit. they definitely grew into a bigger sound as they went on. or maybe that was just the "a.m." album? i'd have to explore more of their discography.
(5/7) sounds like "critically acclaimed 2000s rock"
Arctic Monkeys showed us that anyone could release music on the internet and become successful. "WPSIATWIN" has a lot of great songs such as "A View in the Afternoon" and "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor". However, there's a noticeable difference in quality in the album tracks. That doesn't affect "WPSIATWIN"'s score, as the worst tracks are still good. It's a shame the Arctic Monkeys aren't as good as they used to be. 4 stars for "WPSIATWIN"
The Arctic Monkeys are unique to me and beloved. There is something special there to me that really is unique because it effects every song they perform. I don't judge by less or more, I just listen. I am sure I must have a favorite or a few among them but it kind of doesn't matter, because what I love is the vibe of The Arctic Monkeys. It does not hurt that I am into rhythm and they have hella great drums going on. Yeah, I don't know even what I would call their genre exactly... Doesn't matter to me I guess!
Still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did 20 years ago
I remember first hearing the Arctic Monkeys and liking the return to rootsy, raw rock sensibility. On this album, I liked the "garage" quality that gave it power and honesty. I was impressed with the guitar sounds - some of them expanded the sonic palette nicely. The central figure to me seems the vocalist. Unusual quality of voice and style, mixed up front, lyrics biting. It's all attitude, all the time. Rock indeed.
A lot of energy in this album. There is a lot of playfulness. Like a bunch of music school grads with too much red bull.
I knew about this record when it came out, but didn't really pay attention to it. The early tracks fall into my expectation of it, another attempt to move the post-punk revival into the mainstream, but most of the record really isn't in that space. There's a lot of energy in this record and its a fun punk influenced indie rock and roll record. I will definitely listen to this again.
Sold post-punk punk. Fun listen. Got me pumped up a little and I liked this more than I expected to. Thought I’d listened to these guys before, but I guess not in depth. I could see returning to this one.
One of the last great indie albums. It's technically good, it's got humour and it's got singalongs.
Love this album. Has some amazing songs on it.
I have not heard this before. Arctic Monkeys is one of the bands from the ‘00s that I slept on for whatever reason. I heard a few songs and liked them and then forgot about them and moved on to other things. Anyway I was really missing out. There is some good late 80s indie rock revival sound on here with a few songs leaning towards early grunge, with a really diverse style that is all still cohesive. I’ll have to dig into their discography and see what else I was missing out on.
Wisely the Arctic Monkeys play to their strengths (or at least what I see as their strengths) on this record. When they cut it loose, they offer energetic rock and roll that matches their basketball arena level popularity. The album opens with the near frenetic “The View from the Afternoon”, and keeps pounding with “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor”, “Fake Tales from San Francisco” and “Dancing Shoes.” All feature strong riffs, the band stomping in unison and forceful drumming that drives the songs forward. The rapid pace leaves little time for pretentiousness, and the band is both tight and unpolished. The production brings these elements together to make for a pleasing workout. What holds this record back from the excitement I feel with The Ramones, AC/DC or Motorhead? The songs just miss some hard to define quality of those groups. Not quite as punchy as The Ramones, nor ferocious as Motorhead nor the amazing hooks of the Young brothers. The songs teeter on bashing rather than playing. While I would much rather hear a group cutting loose than getting overproduced, the group comes up short in adding the needed elements to make this as memorable as the best rock and roll. There is something about British singers post-1980 that never quite sits well with me. The singing here is not as annoying as some of the 1980s groups, but it shares some of their qualities. It definitely has an attitude, but comes close to a sneer, whine or juvenile. With more listens, this trait would probably fade. Overall, it was nice to see a hyped group deliver the goods in a lively and totally fun manner.
Some classics on this album. It reminds me of house parties when I was younger. I love Alex Turner's voice. Was nice to hear the songs I didn't already know off this album. There are maybe a few that sound a bit similar, but there were some I really liked that I'd never heard before. Trying to find a way of saying this that doesn't make me sound like the worst kind of English person, but I love how British it is. It just has a specificity that makes it even more nostalgic for me. Fav song: When The Sun Goes Down Least fav: The View From The Afternoon
Some songs in the middle that merge into indistinguishable artic monkeys noise. But still a good album- some great songs that I've heard many times and some I hadn't heard but really liked (like From The Ritz To The Rubble and Fake Tales Of San Francisco). Favourite song: When The Sun Goes Down Least: Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured
Pretty good album, nice indie and alt rock. Listened to on the car ride to a campout. Will be adding a few track to my playlist
8/10 Heavier than I thought, so much energy too compared to some of their later albums, big fan of them when they do this. Some of the riffs and basslines were funky times! Highlight: The View from the Afternoon
I used to listen to this album a lot in my youth. I was roughly the same age as the band members when it came out and I and a lot of my friends were really into it. Reflecting on it again, I quite enjoyed it. I can see limitations that I was not as concerned about at the time. Musically, it isn't that interesting. It's energetic, which I like, but quite basic. Lyrically, it did seem to speak to elements of my experience, but it's a little derivative of Pulp and not quite as insightful. Thinking back, a lot of the hype was about them being a band that gained following through MySpace. In that sense they were one of the first artists to hit the mainstream (and get to number one) through early social media. One for nostalgia, enjoyable but not groundbreaking.
As someone who was introduced to Arctic Monkeys through their albums AM and Favorite Worst Nightmare, it's really cool to go back and hear the album that started it all. Very solid songs, but nothing really stands out for me. The songs sound very similar to each other (except for Riot Van, which is a nice little breather in the middle of the album). Some personal favorites include I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor and Perhaps Vampires is A Bit Strong But...
solid album, after listening to it over time it became an instant skip but this well-needed relisten sparked my love for it again
Ya I dug the alternative rock vibes. "I Bet That You Look Good on the Dance Floor" brings me back to high school.
I love their later, popular tracks a lot. Somehow this is noisy but it doesn't bother me at all. I really do like their sound and I would load this up on a workout playlists if it was 2007 and I was still managing playlists.
All you people are vampires
Not my fav Arctic Monkeys, but it does capture a quintessential indie rock sound of the 2000s
should have listened to this earlier - v good
7.5/10
Strong stylistic Brit Pop with a performers edge. I love this album. It is fun and in your face with bravado and a great sense of story. It is artistically flirtatious and charming to boot. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is engaging and a fun listen regardless!
You not fire
7/10 Pretty standard indie rock stuff overall, nothing really stood out.
great start. "you probably couldn't see for the lights but you were staring straight at me" is definitely underrated. might be my favourite arctic monkeys album.
A part of me misses this era of the Arctic Monkeys even though the AM and later era is still great. This kind of danceable alt rock can be quite infectious thanks to how energetic the music is and the lyrics are quite literary too even if they sometimes get buried by the music.
Fun, high energy album. “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor” is a pump me up go to song. It’s not an album for quiet contemplation but bopping around.
Banger
Holy bangers 4.5
Holds up way better than I would have expected. A bit up and down at times but the highs fucking rip.
RATING: 8/10 HIGHLIGHT: A Certain Romance LOWLIGHT: Dancing Shoes
A good album for sure, I can see why they have crazy fans
Great record all around. Nostalgia clouds my judgment as this is connected with the "coming of age" time of my life, specifically that one summer I hope we all experienced in our teens.... Fun, charming and well-paced indie rock all around. The kind of record that finishes and my immediate reaction is to start it back from the top... 4.5 rounded down because nostalgia makes me want to rate this a 5
alright
It has groove and great guitar riffs. But it's a bit repetitive. Nevertheless I can listen to this without boring myself which is very nice! Favorite Songs: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor ; Mardy Bum ; A Certain Romance
Body shakin' bangers. Completely infectious.
A landmark album in that this was the breakthrough album of the first band to primarily make their name online. This band's breakthrough was really the moment music promotion changed from analog to digital; make what you will of those changes. Musically it has a much harder edge than I remember it having, especially the opening pair of tracks. There is, however, a peak and valley difference between what's great on this album and what's merely OK. Compare the middle section of songs to the opening 3 and closing 4, for instance. Singer Alex Turner is also still finding his sound, and his voice would improve by leaps and boudns on each subsequent release even when the instrumentalists didn't. Most of his melodies are centered on 1 or 2 notes and is fairly unsure of itself when melodies require more out of him - just listen to the wobbly performance on the closer "A Certain Romance" to hear what I'm talking about. That's probably one of the reasons why Arctic Monkeys were unfairly lumped in with the landfill indie that permeated UK rock from 2002 to about 2007. The band has an undeniable ear for finding musical hooks though and it ensures that almost every track has something memorable about it. You can probably chalk that up to how much the band pulls from dancey club music; it's one of the key elements that really separates this band from most of the monochrome alt rock they were competing with. This was actually quite the enjoyable listen for me; I felt every ounce of character the band poured into these songs and I certainly wouldn't mistake them for anyone else's. A high point of 2000s alt rock and that's despite the huge slump in the middle. Key Tracks: The View from the Afternoon, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, A Certain Romance
Fun rocking album. Awesome for a debut. Nothing hooky though. Lots of energy and attitude going nowhere.
Solid album. Takes me back to my highschool days.
what an album to begin with. i bet you look good on the dance floor, mardy bum, and a certain romance are pretty good.
I fkn love AM - The debut album of one of my favorite bands, this project blends a lot of indie elements which at the time were considered revolutionary because that style broke out of the social norms of what was considered acceptable music. Everything about this album is near perfection, from the composition to the production, to the lyrics. Not one inch of dead air in this whole project. Best song - When the Sun Goes Down
Me gustó muchísimo. Buen rock
Good
guitar solos go crazy fav tracks: 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12
this style of rock is probably never going to be my absolute favorite thing, but as far as it goes, i like it a lot more than other albums in a similar genre. will probably listen to it again at some point
4/5 Favorite Songs: Fake Tales Of San Francisco When The Sun Goes Down Red Light Indicates Doors are Secured
real good 90s street vibes
It’s like getting a finger up the bum for the first time by a girl you know has done it before. You don’t want to like it. But you love it. Great album. Did a job.
AMO AMO AMO AMO
A blend of 70s/80s punk rock energy with just enough 21st century hipster vibe to feel new but not annoyingly pretentious.
Surprisingly good. Glad I gave it a second listen (and then a third).
This album launches in immediately with some of the most frenetic drumming I've heard so far on this journey with "The View From The Afternoon", truly setting the pace for the rest of the album; never have I seen all the other instruments support the drummer like this before. Turner's northern vocals also helps to sell the vibe of it's accompanying video too, of a youngster trying to prove he's more than the estate he grew up on. For me, Turner's vocals have - and always will - embody that British working class sneer, made at those who would think they were better than you. "I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor" gets similar praise, though this one seemingly took off more for the wider public than the former, references to the dancefloor ensuring that's exactly where it was played for years. The solid bassline to "Fake Tales OF San Francisco" do a great job of carrying Turner's aggressive vocals, though even by this track, a lack of variation is starting to show. "Dancing Shoes", although it has all the energy and solid musical arrangements to make it fun, still feels like more of the same. "You Probably Couldn't See..." has, again, the same vibe, but the mix up with the backing vocal parts and the scratchy moments with drums/guitar without the bass were genuinely interesting and fun. Other tracks I enjoyed: "Still Take You Home", "Riot Van", "Perhaps Vampires", "When The Sun Goes Down", "A Certain Romance" Overall, I probably should give it the 5 as I enjoyed pretty much the entire album, but I've stung previous artists for that lack in variation of the emotional tone both for the instrumentation and lyrics. These guys, no matter how prolific, should get the same treatment.
Unpopular opinion - this is as good as they ever got
I never understood the appeal of these guys but listening to this in full might make me change my mind.
Love the energy, can relate to the vision of life in the UK - does this travel? Some clever observations for anyone who’s ever been 18-21 and clubbing. Thought it was overhyped when it came out but in retrospect it’s a bit of a banger. If you don’t like his vocal style you’re out of luck as it doesn’t vary at all. FYI: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor cover by the Sugababes is even better than the original 😃
I would give this 4.5 stars, the second "side" of the album is fantastic, the first "side" has a lot of chaotic pop tricks that overwhelm, but the songwriting and delivery is top notch. Really great rock n' roll record.
Amazing album! My second record that i've listened to by them and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The highlight is definitely Turner's vocal delivery - so good!
Really savoring this, as I think there should be more Arctic Monkeys on this list. Great album, some of their others should be on the list as well or instead!
Old HS fav
Never gave them a chance at the time because of they hype. Too bad. This is solid.
é bom e é isso ai
Really wish i got into these guys in middle school instead of The Fratellis, i would’ve turned out better
Fantastic garage rock album, but more fun/danceable than typical garage rock.
great music and captures 2006 vibes with impressive ease
All time classic
Standouts: Riot Van, Mardy Bum, When The Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance
I was obsessed with this album when it released, but I haven’t really returned to it since then. This was a crazy hit of nostalgia. I have fallen off listening to Arctic Monkeys over the years (they peaked with their third album Humbug in my mind). This has some cracking naughties indie anthems and I remembered every single word of it. Listening to it now that I’m 20 years older than when I first heard it, some of the lyrics are really smart, and some I used to think were smart now come across as quite cheesy. Really enjoy the bass on this album (Andy Nicholson, has anyone ever fumbled the bag worse than him?) and I just a really good time revisiting this.
This sound is a lot more punky/rocky than I was expecting having not listened to any of AM outside “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” Which I would blow my brains out if I have to hear one more fucking time. It’s still pop rock and disorganized, but I actually like it? A dud or two but great sound, cool bass lines, I would listen again for sure. Funky guitar at the end of the”Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong…” is good :^)
Really cool instrumentally, with varied time signatures and almost funky bass. Vocally it's jarring at first but becomes tolerable. 4.0/5.0: Great
i went into this thinking that i hated the arctic monkeys. i still dont love them but this was pretty solid
I remember the hype around AM when Dancefloor dropped. The overall album didn't quite live up to the hype but still lots of fun tunes and great energy. I do love how the band has been able to evolve over time and I even probably prefer the lounge sleaze of the later Tranquility Base but It's fun to go back to see where things started and to feel young again. It's fun to track a band that basically grew up with me.
"Have you been drinking, son? You don't look old enough to me" "I'm sorry, officer, is there a certain age you're supposed to be? 'Cause nobody told me"
Pretty bouncy and fun for the right moment....four stars
i really like this album! the energy is great, the riffs are all cool and memorable, and it's got solid staying power. totally appreciate what they've got going on here, and while i don't love it as much as I'm sure some of you guys do, i still really like it. the only thing that makes me sad is that this band is, for me, a lot like coldplay: the debut record is great (perfect in coldplay's case), and everything else is just... meh. i don't know whether or not i'm alone in that, but later releases felt to me like "yep that's the Arctic Monkeys but not as good as the first album" and i hate that for them and for me. but in a vacuum this album is awesome! funnily, i was introduced to this band early in college (via AM) and i was like yeah i guess this is kinda cool. then i found this album and never listened to AM again
Another band that I've always been around but never really given a try (outside of AM). .Much better than I anticipated. The early-mid 2000s era of rock never clicked with me for some reason, and every time I listen it feels like I'm in some coming of age movie. I started getting a little angsty, which progressed to a desire to break things. This could be unrelated to the actual songs as I listened to some of the album in a Walmart. 3.5-4
Listened to this with Dane in my car at 3am after downing an energy drink and listening to 2 straight Kidz Bop albums. It is safe to say this is not the intended listening experience. That I still found it very enjoyable under such circumstances is a testament to why it was such a phenomenon when it came out.
My fave Arctic Monkeys album, love them loud, angular guitars. The perfect soundtrack for slicking your hair back, ordering a sloppy steak, and being a huge piece of shit.
Pretty straightforward 2000s-2010s indierock, but I do enjoy it. 4
This is a formative album for me in many ways, and also came just too late after the Beneath the Boardwalk demos - time moved so fast back then that I was already a bit 'over' the hype by the time this came out. That said, this is chock full of hits and hooks that stand up today whilst also being a proper time capsule for a time of ringtones, bacardi breezers and regional accents.
These guys come at you hard and driving, and I imagine they were the soundtrack for birds and blokes all over the UK. And even though their faster songs get the pub, “A Certain Romance”, a five-minute song half with guitar solos, is a real standout.
Knallsterk debut, 8/10
This did not disappoint.
Believe it or not I haven't really ever bothered or cared to listen to the Artic Monkeys. I know of them, my only musical exposure to them came from roommates in college wanting to learn how to play "R U MINE?" (not on this album) and hearing it over and over again. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not sounds much closer to the post punk revival sound of the 2000s over whatever was happening to rock music by the time of AM. And......this record is alright. There's a decent chunk of the middle songs on the album I can care less about and the final track is goodish, and the rest is some honest to good rock music right as rockism was meeting its own end. For the mainstream to accept this, there could be sooooooooo much worse.
One of the best debut albums I’ve ever heard, it’s packed with strong tracks and maintains a great sense of flow, with dynamics between songs that keep it engaging from start to finish. Most of the record carries a raw, high-energy sound that feels immediate and unpolished in the best way. The guitars stand out with a sharp, gritty tone, while the drums are explosive and pushed right to the front of the mix, giving everything a real sense of urgency. My highlights are “Fake Tales of San Francisco,” “Riot Van,” “Red Lights Indicates Doors Are Secured,” and “A Certain Romance,” and overall it’s a genuinely groundbreaking debut it’s easy to understand why it came as such a huge surprise when it first dropped .There’s this urgency in the songwriting and delivery that feels very real, like you’re right there in those nights they’re describing.
Jammin' and Vibin'. Great palette cleanser from Radiohead's Amnesiac lmao
Best of the discography, after Humbug
Tom - "It's a keystone of early British indie bands"
This is out-of-genre for me but I really enjoyed this album. I've kind of avoided the Arctic Monkeys, partially because I thought they were overhyped and partially because I thought it wasn't for me. I'm sorry. I was wrong. This is high-energy and fun music by skilled artists.
One of my favorite albulms from one of my favorite bands incredible and classic
I really like the Arctic Monkeys. I’m not as familiar with this album as some of their later ones, but I knew a few songs on this (I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, Mardy Bum, and When the Sun Goes Down). I really like Alex Turner’s voice. I love when singers have strong British accents.
Man!!!!! This went triple platinum on my ipod on 2014 i gotta hand it to them
punchy sound, interesting lyrics, i say ok
Probably time I gave these fellas a chance. I still have them pegged as the flavor of the month when it turns out this record is 20 years old. And it turns out I really liked it, the immediacy of the sound and the authenticity of their point of view. I knew I would enjoy the hits but I even liked the quirkier stuff like “Riot Van” and the vampires song. I don’t know that I fell in love with it enough for a 5 but I am going to check out their other stuff.
A bit too much of the same, but the hits are good. 7/10
Me gusto, transmite mucha energía
This album is what the indie rock scene had needed for quite some time. Some really catchy riffs and great guitar driven classic songs. Thanks Sheffield for producing yet another awesome northern band. The massive breakthrough hit "I bet you look good on the dancefloor" just took the world by storm and every stickyfloored rock club was playing it. I am also very happy that this album introduced the world to the emotional state of being mardy in the playfully "Mardy Bum". (4.125)
Expecting a pretty big generational divide between myself and everyone else on this album- did we all listen to this one 100 times in high school or was that just me?
3,96 1. "I Bet You Look Good οn the Dancefloor" 2. "Fake Tales οf San Francisco" 3. "Dancing Shoes"
I dig it.
Well gents, that's a righ' propah rock 'n' roll album. These guys have evaded me over the years, even when A.M. came out. When it comes to that aughts-y post punk, I generally fill my cup with The Strokes and The Hives. But in that crowded space, this is a gem; charismatic hedonism is the minimum for entry, but this level of combustible energy and clever songcraft are not. The absolute journey "Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But..." takes you on. Really glad I finally got to this.
Damn, I know it’s been years since I’ve tried listening to this but I didn’t remember it being so good? This record is a force to be reckoned with. The storytelling and riffs and manic drums, it’s a total classic. Have they made anything else as good as this? Doesn’t matter either way; if I’m in the mood for Arctic Monkeys I know I’ll have this to return to.
Really fun! Brings back memories of a summer spent bartending in Yellowstone National Park. I always wonder why I don't put this in a more regular part of my rotation, maybe I finally will.
I love this sound, and I have the nostalgia, but it repeats itself a bit too much to be completly one of the greats
Great album one of the best indie hits of the 21st century. Imo The Arctic Monkeys best. 4/5
Another Brit band, but this one is pretty cool, at least. The albums haven so boring for the last two weeks. By comparison this one sounds amazing even though it’s not that great. It gets a 4 for the relative theory.
Nice
Huge fan of this record. Fake Tales of San Francisco is on my workout playlist, but the whole thing is solid fun.
Yep, understand the hype, really liked this. Singing style a bit grating after a while if I'm being picky. Which obviously I am.
An absolutely insane debut from a band of scraggly British boys who were all either nineteen or just barely twenty years old. The album slumps just a little in the middle, but the number of strong and memorable tracks far outweighs the weaker tracks. Nostalgia aside, this is one of the best indie rock albums of its era. An essential listen for understanding that period in music. ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE VAMPIRES
classic
iconicc but a bit too aggrzssive for me 🥺
just so good innit. faves are mardy bum and when the sun goes down
was excited to hear this, enjoyable listen but it probably would have been better to listen to on the drive home or at home rather than at work when i was trying to get a project done lol
Great debut … instant classic 👍
The View From the Afternoon - nice energetic opener. Offbeat section was fun I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Banger, no other words Fake Tales of San Francisco - Another banger, maybe even better? Heard the album before, very very good album. 4/5
It's chill
solids mid 2000s album
I like the album some banging songs just needed a few more bangers to be 5 stars
Buenos instrumentos
Give it half a chance. Look on the bright side, through the barrel of a gun. Swing on the floor and run after the sun.
8/10
Ah, this one takes me back. I'm pretty sure I owned this CD. When I told my husband what my album assignment was today he mentioned that I told him back when we first started dating in 2006 that these guys were going to be a big deal. Not sure of how big of a deal they became in the grand scheme of things, but several of the songs on this album are locked in my brain (not sure how "classic" they are by the rest of the world's standards though). Objectively, now that I'm 20 years removed from when this album came out - it's still a solid album, very listenable, but a lot of the songs sound the same. (4)
8/10
really good
Another revisit that brought this up for me. Really good album.
Just an absolute sixer. An album that will always have its impact. Crystallization of a moment in rock. Massively influential. Anyway probably a 4 lmao. I could be persuaded this is their best!
stellar guitar work! loved the almost dueling vibes at certain points
jangly ahh guitar, energetic ahh voice, catchy ahh melodies
Classic album with great drumming - Alex turner isn’t annoying in this one either
Arctic monkeys are a group where everyone loves them but I barely hear in a convo when talking about music. But like wow they def deserve being here, all hits, and it helps im hyperfixated on a game rn which has similar music to it (shoutout UNBEATABLE)
Really enjoyed this album. Not much else to say, just really had a good time listening to it.
So the early 2000’s birthed the genre which is now fondly? Not so fondly? Referred to as, Indie Sleaze and I admittedly lapped so much of it up in retrospect, a good deal of it was slop. When the dank, sleazy dust settled it became more apparent that the acts which emerged from the rubble were the ones who were skilful in their ability to weave the sleaze into their tracks and not force it. It came naturally to them and therefore came across as almost charming as opposed to douchey. It’s not an easy feat by any means but Artic Monkey’s, specifically Alex Turner pulls it off masterfully. Fantastic compilation of hooky, rock songs that would play well in a bar with a bit of stick to their floors. 4 stars
I great enjoyed this. Punky pop at its best and love the Yorkshire inflections on the vocals
increible la mayoria de las canciones
