Classic stuff in a tight package. Agree with the note that many AM songs sound like AM songs, but I’d argue their cohesion is has more ups than downs, at least as far as “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s Not What I Am” is concerned. That unique layered guitar you hear and hopefully enjoy from track one stays present through to the album’s close. That’s not to say nothing’s done to keep songs fresh, as I find subtle differences go far in this context. Additionally, Alex Turner excels at the predominantly rapid-fire lyrical approach this album so often presents, but I find that his more intimate moments lack the punch he boasts in later albums. As a final note, the tracks present in this album vary greatly in runtime. This carries subtle but impactful weight in supporting the album’s tendency for its tracks change in tune and build over their respective runtimes. Construction of such varied tracks leads to an album that feels internally distinct even in such a packed lineup, but must inevitably be quite a chore to complete. I can picture how the band may’ve felt temptations to repeat a few refrains they found especially poignant in the interest of outputting a more expected 3-3.5 minute structure. Glad they didn’t.

Really good

This one rocked! I haven’t heard their early stuff before.

Great album. Fresh and powerful.

I feel like i'm in year 8 again - Riot Van is so underrated; There exists no better album closer than A Certain Romance

- mardy bum - riot van said im a scumbag dontcha know

Nice music but I prefer their AM album. I did not know any song. 3.7 stars

Can a band be both over-hyped and absolutely magnificent at the same time? That's been my assessment of Arctic Monkeys for a long time. Man, they are talented, but I just can never get my head around the idea that they are as good as their many fans say they are. Then again, listening to an AM album is NEVER a bad experience. And this album certainly belongs in the conversation when you're talking about greatest debuts of all time.

Fun stuff

This was more punk/harder than I eggspected. It was actually really good for that vibe because they have a really nice mix of punk and chill and their lyrics are fantastic. They also use really unique and I tweeting chords which I really like. Good job Monkeys

First off, amazing album name. I would consider myself an Arctic Monkeys fan. I love their overall vibe and sound. This is a great album, but not my favorite by them (or even my second favorite). I wonder if anybody has ever looked at me and surmised that I look good on the dance floor? Almost certainly not.

The debut project from Arctic Monkeys shows passion, leverage, production, and a certain essence that only the 2000s rock can produce. And it works fantastically. It isn't MAGNIFICENT, but it's definitively something everyone should hear. (How did Arctic Monkeys fans accepted "The Car" knowing they could make something like this? It's beyond me.) 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very Arctic Monkeys-y. Good

What a debut this is

This is cool, i remember listening to this in like middle/high school and i wonder if i would like it if it werent for the nostalgia factor. I also dont think it would work without his voice and accent

Okay i actually liked this. I thought there were some pretty good lyrics. Marty Bum and riot man were my favorite

White boys need to make music like this again

the random slow song in the middle SLAPPED, rest was upbeat, all new to me and pretty good

It’s alright

The opening bars of “A Certain Romance” would be great to start a concert. Will have this song on my liked song list. I enjoyed this album. The group is new to me.

There was so much AMs hype, and I was turning 15. These songs are scratched into my soul. So much raw energy. But does it hang together?

really funny that the first album i get for this is one i’ve listened to a thousand times. not my favorite am (sias, no question) but not my least favorite either. lots of their most underrated but still great stuff— fake tales of san francisco, when the sun goes down, a certain romance etc etc

Honestly, this felt like Arctic Monkeys as they were meant to be enjoyed. big deep drums, guitar licks played on strings of thick sinew, high hats that make you anxious and hurry whatever it is your doing, and lyrics that make you feel like you're running out of time. I really enjoyed this album, and felt like all the tracks were well made and thought out, and fit the album well. Favorite track of the album was Dancing Shoes, with honorable mention to Marry Bum, and a shoutout to British people.

Alex Turner we love you

Klart det cooleste britiske indie album vi endnu har haft

Great album to listen to. I never took the time to listen to Arctic Monkeys before but I think I will again.

Great debut that lays the foundations of Turner as a brilliant songwriter

It’s a solid record with some really nice bits.

Still hits, if I’m being honest

Energetic Rock

When the sun goes down takes me back to the 2000s. What a tune

Buen álbum. La música se la puede desmenuzar en sus instrumentos. Todos y cada uno de ellos. La batería y los bajos son espectaculares. Gusta

Pretty good listen this. Some of the lyrics feel a bit dated, or maybe it's just that I'm old. Some of the songs sound a little too similar too, but overall enjoyable.

Would have been a 5 at some point. Much like myself don't think it's aged particularly well. More filler than I remember. Worth 4 stars for nostalgia

Still not my style of music but enjoyed listening too

Every track on this is a banger in some way. Favourite Track(s): Riot Van, Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But… Least Favourite Track(s): Mardy Bun

Had some incredible tracks on here. Nothing bad in here, just don't think the Artic Monkeys hit the sweet spot until a few albums in. Vibes are splendid though

Lots of energy can get samey though. A few bangers

Really enjoyed this - it was consistently good 👍

Honestly the singles are probably the best part of this album for me. What was pioneering to me at the time of release, granted I was 13/14, is now a bit stale, repetitive, and cliche. That's not to say I don't enjoy it, I just think the best bits are the singles, it's very representative of the year it was released in. The lyrics have a northern charm and wittiness, the guitar tones have that standard 2006-indie-tone, and the drums are punchy to tie it all in. It's like getting pissed down the pub with your mates.

Yes! So fresh, so good!

Several good songs. Could listen to again. Low 4

When I'm listening a lot of my time is wondering what made this album on the list. This is a good album, it's snot bad, but I don't know why I would have to listen to this one.

Part of me loved it but part of me was slightly annoyed because they gave me a little bit of wankier vibes. Like they know they are good and let it ooze all over their music. Sometimes it is great and makes for some fun lyrics and great riffs, but then other times it just is too much and becomes sort of annoying. I really liked Mardy Bum and A Certain Romance.

I’ve been excited to get this one because I’ve heard great things but never gave it a listen before. It was super fun and rockin’, but it was missing a little depth in the lyrics for me. It was largely about party culture, which I have nothing against (obviously), but it was hard to emotionally connect to, and it didn’t reach 5 territory.

Solid Garage Rock Revival band and album. Liked it, would listen again.

Creative sounds. Not for me but very musically interesting.

24/1001 :: Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 8 Fav Tracks: Fake Tales of San Francisco, Mardy Bum, I listened to this album quite a bit when it came out. I thought the Arctic Money’s were gonna be the next Libertines but turns out they became much more. I think? I feel like their albums lost a little piss along the way but when I listened back to this record I was reminded why I feel in love with them at first. This album is fun as hell and very British. So British in fact that I think some of these references go over my head…what the hell is a marry bum anyway? OK, now back to listening to Sabbath. Sorry Alex Turner…

College nostalgia, Brit-rock defining album, very into it

I hadn't realised that this was their debut album...It's a ripper. This album takes everything that was good about British rock bands at the time and dials it up to 11. There are some absolute bangers on this album.

75/100. Arctic Monkeys’ debut came out swinging, quick, clever, and full of life. It captured a moment in time with raw confidence and gritty energy, blending garage rock with fast-talking lyricism and a distinctly British wit.

Genre: Garage Rock Revival One of Britain’s greatest rock albums of the 2000s. Lots of energy, lots of spunk and youth. I’ve listened to this album umpteen times in my life by now, and I’ve yet to get sick of it. It’s not totally perfect, but it’s a real gem, and an interesting little time capsule considering where the Arctic Monkeys have gone since. 4/5

Its been a long time since I listened to this album but I used to be a huge Arctic Monkeys fan back in high school so I was looking forward to revisiting it. I think it holds up really well. "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" is still an absolute bop and there's plenty of other bangers here. I don't think its my favorite AM record but I understand why its the one they would go with for this list. Definitely the greatest album with a Adam Sandler look-a-like on the cover. Favorite track: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor

Um álbum excelente. Sonoridade mais crua. QoA Vesper

Pretty fast and playful, and consistently good. I don't think there was any one track that stood out or left a big impression

First album added to spotify under 1001 albums. Definitely has punk rock feel.

This album just makes me think of Davis so it makes me happy. Super nostalgic too because all the big kids were obsessed w it in freshman t show so it will always be a cool album to me. 4.5 cuz it’s a tad one note

I had never listened to their debut. Much more rock than the more indie than the stuff I’m familiar with. I especially liked the closing track.

I've enjoyed the Arctic Monkeys. The guitar on Mardy Bum kills me, I love it. But I had never listened to an entire album. Still love them. I can't figure out why I enjoy them so much, but I guess the guitars, and the punk ethos, and the voice all come together nicely.

solid 4! i liked the album overall and got a few favs

Pretty awesome!

I remember when Dance Floor broke. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my speed at the time. Glad to finally ingest this whole album. Very catchy. Very British. If I were 16 when it came, I would've adored it.

A new take on indie pop rock, sang with a proper accents and telling the stories of growing up in city. Raw and in your face.

A pure rock revival to harken back days of ol' with the Brit Pop wave.

One of the best debut albums released. Not everything hits the mark but when it does its exciting. The drumming and lead guitar manage to cancel out the affected vocals enough. When the sun goes down, I bet you look good on the dancefloor and mardy bum are career highlights.

amazing

You can feel the sticky carpets. A whole album dedicated to the local lads living in big towns and provincial English cities and their nights out when all the uni kids have gone home. Fake tan, lager, idiotic banter. But the music is as good as this wave of indy/garage rock got. Frenetic guitars and countering bass add to the picture of a youthful summer - old enough to think you're an adult but too young to worry about the rent.

Great lyrics and strong song writing elevate strong, but standard, indie fair

Authentic and raw.

This is a very rare album. One that, in 2006, seemingly everyone in the UK all loved all at once. Music fans and people who couldn't care less all cottoned on to this group at the same time, with catchy, immediate singles leading to the release of a well rounded and (more than anything else) fun album. There is a freshness to it that almost 20 years later still manages to make you sit up, despite all of the singles having received more than its fair share of airtime. Alex Turner is at his funniest on this debut. Its his well observed, interesting or absurd lyrics that turns an album of energetic garage rock tunes and slower indie ballads into something instantly relatable for most listeners. "Have you been drinking, son? You don't look old enough to me." "I'm sorry, officer, is there a certain age you're supposed to be? 'Cause nobody told me." There are touch points that you can hear under the bonnet: The Strokes; The Streets; The Rapture; but what they're doing is a new amalgamation and created an album that still today some guy in your local pub describes as "the last time a band made proper music."

Definitely a brilliant album, not a tastemakers selection. Just a robust and angsty British rock album. As good as debut albums come. These blokes were 18-20 when writing, recording, releasing and touring this culturally important album. I agree with the guy who said this is important to those who were young when it was released. I agree, but finding it late in my life was huge. A return to '06 and my roots in punk.

Great debut but they got better. AM is their high point although Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is a personal favourite. My sons first ever concert, a forever memory for us both

Pure 00s Rock

Fans hearing this album for the first time thanks to MySpace would be ultimately mislead in the wonderful future that social media could bring. Though AM would subsequently release stronger albums, Whatever People Say I Am remains a home run of a debut that doesn't let up, and does 2000s Brit Rock better than any other band at the time.

This is a good album.

A Certain Romance - Guitar riff is lovely and beat is pleasant. Straight ear candy

Album is a lot of fun.

Great sound.

A straightforward album by a reliable band. I had fun listening to it, though there are no stand-out tracks for me.

Hard Rock, little Punk. Best Songs: Dancing Shoes & When the Sun goes down

6/28/2025

Maybe one of the best albums of the nillies for me…

pretty good 4

Pre-listening thoughts: okayyyy arctic monkeys! But seriously what is going on. We’ve gotten so many 2000s picks recently like it’s crazy. We’re about to exhaust them all. Post/during listening thoughts: hey this was good! I think Arctic monkeys is also one of those bands that (albeit usually younger) classic rock fans latch onto to prove they like newer music, but I think they’re a decent group. I think this subset of 2000s indie rock is really fun and bands like this, The Killers, The Strokes, Bloc Party, etc really made something with surprisingly large appeal. I have found myself in a hole of this genre recently and I think Arctic Monkeys just dug it a little deeper. 8/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: The View From the Afternoon, Dancing Shoes, Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong But…, When the Sun Goes Down Least fav tracks: Riot Van

I remember when I first heard this album when it was released and it had an instant impact. The songs were catchy and they had "return to rock' n' roll" revivalist, indie sound that I listened to around that time. I downloaded and listened to a lot of music, sometimes familiar and sometimes not. I wasn't familiar with "Whatever People Say...", but it sounded like it was. Hearing it now doesn't quite have the same effect on me , maybe because there have been so many bands that sound like the Arctic Monkeys since. It's a good record, especially for a debut, but it's not great and has flaws, but it stood out amongst the millions of hours of music I listened to in the 2000's, so it's worth re-visiting.

Really awesome album start to finish. If I had listened to it more when I was younger I'm sure it would probably be a five or more

Хорошее воспоминание из подросткового возраста Хорошая заводная музыка

I thought it was great bc hello its arctic monkeys

great classic arctic monkeys. great listen

I went into Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not thinking it wasn’t going to be my thing — maybe because I vaguely remembered liking AM but never followed up on it. Turns out, I should’ve given these guys more credit. Yeah, they get labeled as indie rock, but there’s a gritty, punk energy running through this album that keeps it from sounding too polished or pretentious. Tracks like “The Red Light Indicates” and “From the Ritz to the Rubble” really stood out — sharp lyrics, frantic pace, and a raw edge that makes you want to hit repeat. It exceeded expectations and reminded me that indie rock doesn’t have to be boring Favorite song: From the Ritz to the Rubble

High energy and never dull.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Thoroughly enjoyed this and a breath of fresh air after some of the monotony of the post-2000 albums I've gotten so far. Enough twists and turns in each song to keep things interesting. Sometimes the transitions work, other times they feel a little abrupt and random. Regardless a thrilling ride from start to finish.

I've listened to this before and I do really like it, but my enjoyment throughout the album is not consistent. I would rather listen to just my favourite songs than the whole album. Favourites: Riot Van, Mardy Bum, When The Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance, Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.

very good

Lots of good pizzazz. Great riffs.

The energy is good, all stadium bangers, but not always sold on the voice. And while the lyrics have these complicated phrasings, it describes stuff that I just don't relate to at all. And I was the target demographic at the time. They also kinda phone it in live.

Good album. 7/10.

Really great album really like the band’s unique music style and vocals. Would listen to it again

Obviously good, so British

Somehow have never listened to this Pretty good

Som ett slagsmål i ett väldigt icke-utsatt område

This really warmed up to me throughout the end of the first listen and into the second. They have great musical talent and the singers voice is animated and interesting. Some really great songs on here and some that fade a bit, but I'm generally impressed. 3.7/5 - > 4/5

Really liked this one, very energetic with the drums and the guitar riffs. Favourites: the first three, still take you home, the last three and the two songs with abnormally long titles for some reason. Overall 8/10.

Notable

Way better, heavier and skillfull than I epected.

Seen them live before so it was nice to familiarise myself with the whole album and not just the two popular songs I’ve already heard. I liked it. Again, not really my type of music. I’m very much a lyrics person and I feel like just with the volume of the instruments it didn’t give me a chance to get into it. But I still liked the overall sound of the album. 62/100

Þétt og gott rokk frá AM. Singlarnir geggjaðir. Frábær frumraun. 4,5

This sure sounds like 2006 - I didn't listen to this genre at the time but it fits right in with the other garage rock bands that I listened to later on. I can't say I'll seek listening to this album, but I wouldn't skip many songs if they came up on a playlist

Definitely a really nice album, fun listening experience! Guitar and drums are on point and diverse. Every song has something unique. Still there is non standing out.

I haven't really listened to Arctic Monkeys before, but this was not what I expected. I liked the accents so much, down with American accents lol. The guitar work was nice, as was the drums. There was a good use of like idk swells and lulls. I really like The View From the Afternoon. 3.5/5 stars.

Decent album. Mardy Bum best song. Not typically my type of jams but I think this is solid road trip music.

How did 16 year old me not know about this band? great tragedy of my life in hindsight. Feels like i've heard some of these songs though tony hawk pro skater type shit (not derogatory)

Wow, they have music so much better than from the AM album? I knew they were good but I hadn't until now listened to the rest of their discography, WOW it is hitting. So far "Riot Van" & "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Closed" are kinda not doing it for me, but despite that, the album is amazing!

Didn't love the first song but the rest of the album is good! Has a White Stripes vibe.

Super fun rock album

This album had great sound, explosive lyrics and was a fun listen. Personally, it leans a little heavier into rock than my preferences tend to lie but the angsty lyrics, punk-ish energy, and beat was great.

-One of the greatest albums of the decade -Consistent throughout the entirety of the album -Perfect way to debut an artist, with build-up singles -Best Songs: The View From The Afternoon, Mardy Bum, When The Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance -Worst Songs: Still Take You Home, Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But... -Overall Rating: 8.9/10

I would like to note that there are no artic monkeys in real life. This is a good record. I always try to pigeon hole but there are a number of music styles here with an undercurrent of FUNK. Good songs and some nice guitar work. Enjoyed

Very very solid album. Wish I had given more of a listen to these guys before. Almost a 5 but I’m reserving for all time legendary albums. Super super solid 4.

Not really my favorite genre but it was pretty good

ya he escuchado, adrenalinico.

Arctic Monkeys is a group that I've listened to time and again. They're an English indie garage rock revival group that exploded onto the scene thanks in part to the proliferation of their work on the internet, only to mellow as the years went by into a sort of hodgepodge with psychedelic rock and lounge. It's weird how such a tonal shift happened. Thankfully, their debut Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not captures the band's early tenacity. The vibe I got from this album was meeting up with my mates at the downtown pub, heading in, and getting blasted in the ears by this hot new band playing their live set. I head near the stage to catch what they're playing, and am genuinely impressed by the degree to which these young lads utilized complex riffs and syncopated rhythms. There seemed to be a lot more beneath the surface as they rolled on with their frenetic dance jams with a few well-sequenced breaks in between, such as the slow-burn ballad "Riot Van" and the loud-quiet-loud structure of "Mardy Bum". As for frontman Alex Turner himself, he sang with a strong dialect about the nightlife. From taking in the scenery on opener "The View from the Afternoon", to envisioning the girl out of her mundane situation into the downtown on "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", to the nervousness in making a move on "Dancing Shoes", to the group of friends looking to have fun despite their current circumstances on "Riot Van", these general musings work in tandem with the garage rock production to illicit that vibe of the pub band taking their observations and putting them to song. Admittedly, the focus on spurring relationships gets a wee bit repetitive throughout the record, especially coming out of Alex's thick accent. Still, it generally works with the vibe and doesn't completely take me out of the performance. Overall, I'd say this was a solid debut for Arctic Monkeys, with a style and songwriting approach they refined for their next album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, before they shifted gears. It's certainly felt like a nice trip to the local dive.

Complete

This was kinda great. I wasn't expecting much. I'm aware of the band, I think they had one or two big hits at some point, but I've never listened to a complete album. It's nicely post punk, reminds me of The Killers or The Strokes.

You can’t deny that this album has some excellent songs on it, and I really enjoyed listening to it, but there is something now, as there was then, that I’m not even sure I can really put my finger on that makes me unable to be fully invested in the arctic monkeys or able to give them 5 stars. So the tl;dr great album that I really enjoyed listening to, but something is just missing for me

This album is jam packed with cool songs. Totalitarian.

*is there anyone more Yorkshire? i don't know that there is. how many syllables do words have? none of your business. *these songs tend to run into one another if I'm not paying attention to the transitions, but that isn't a negative--it means things flow. *it's fascinating to hear this having heard I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor in isolation...still really like it but it's not my favorite on the album *Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But... might be my favorite, with Mardy Bum a close second *four stars. will actively listen again. great vibe.

I understand why it caught the attention when it came out. It's catchy, brash and very sure of itself. Musically it also has some interesting aspects, it's more than just a pop-punk album. But it's still mainly a pop-punk album; music for a party of young people.

very solid mid 2000s alt rock album!!

listened to before, 9/10

They sure used to be better than they are now

While different from their later stuff, I still liked it!

The Arctic Monkeys are phenomenal - but this is far from their best work. Even beyond AM. Favorite Worst Nightmare AND Tranquility Base both deliver more well-rounded and experienced performances. That being said, this is still the sound your Monkeys are known for, and it does still deliver those sweet sounds I crave.

I’m glad that some modern rock made it on the list, and Arctic Monkeys definitely have some bangers. It’s a good album overall. It’s only brought down by the fact that most of it all sounds the same (plus some unnecessary filler songs that contribute to the sameness), and the singing style occasionally is annoying. Overall though, it’s good. I’d say a 4 or 4.5.

I found the vocalist to be really grating on first listen, but the rest of the band sounded really fuckin great so I gave it a few more tries over the course of the day. Eventually I warmed up to the vocals and everything clicked. Today, the British won.

Great band. I'm not familiar with all of their albums, but this one encompassed everything I like about them.

3.7, Good rock

This album ripped - high energy, some great bass lines, generally awesome

I don’t know why but I didn’t expect to like this.. I did though! I’d heard one of the songs but didn’t realize it.

A good listen. Fun alt rock. Lots of energy. Will listen again.

Anybody else getting a bit of a White Stripes vibe?

I BET THAT YOU LOOK GOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR DANCING TO ELECTRO POP LIKE A ROBOT FROM 1984, FROM NINETEEN EIGHTY FOUUUUURRRR Stars.

Like Spoon, but with energy and raw emotion.

1. The view from the afternoon: this fucks, kinda punky, kinda garage rock, kinda funky too, kinda straight alternative. Tricked me with a fake ending. 2. I bet you look good on the dancefloor: this one was good too. Kinda funky. 3. Fake tales of san Francisco: this one was super good. 4. Dancing Shoes: I like the bass on this one. Nice guitar work on this one. 5. You probably couldn't see for the lights but you were staring right at me: Jesus fucking christ long song title. Anyway good song. 6. Still take you home: forgot to mention how good of a frontman Alex is. Very confident. 7. Riot van: change of pace. Much quieter song here. 8. Red light indicates doors are secured: this one reminds me of The Clash a bit. In sound anyway. 9. Mardy Bum: this one is good too. 10. Perhaps vampires is a bit strong but...: this one is good as well. Super solid album so far. Another fake ending. 11. When the sun goes down: another solid track. 12. From the ritz to the rubble: damn he's spitting on this one. Another solid rock song. 13. A certain romance: This one has a pretty hype intro. Great track I really like this one.

I really enjoyed this one. The first half has a ton of fun rocking riffs and the second still has great but softer songs. 0 bad songs.

This is a real good album. Has good energy, good lyrics, and some decent variety. I was into Cage the Elephant around 2010 and listening to this really brought some similarities to my head that I couldn't quite put my finger on. So I went back and listened to CTE's 2009 debut album and enjoyed that as well, for the first time in over a decade. An overall real nice experience with both albums.

I coincidentally saw a kid wearing an Arctic Monkey's shirt.

Very good

Not the best album in the world, and probably shouldn't be included in this list, but it's a good listen. I personally like their debut more than their subsequent albums.

I guess I expected AM type stuff which I think I definitely used to like more than I do now, but its not really that same, kinda overproduced squeaky-clean stuff, I feel like this draws a lot from Oasis, and The Clash (the basslines), I love the way that most of the guitar parts sit with the bassline and the drums, it just creates this mischievous groove which I think they stopped doing. Lyrics make me proud to be British, as I guess some Americans probably don't know what he's talking about sometimes. The cheekiness is by far the best bit, as don't really think anyone else has quite done it like him. Favourite songs: I bet you look good on the dancefloor, you probably couldn't see for the lights but you were staring straight at me, still take you home, riot van, red light indicates doors are sealed, perhaps vampires is a bit strong but..., from the Ritz to the rubble. Overall around 8/10

Quite decent 4/5

Debut Album by Artic Monkeys apparently 1. The View From The Afternoon 2. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - Not bad. I could dance to this if I could dance. 3. Fake Tales Of San Francisco - Something about a bad band and people not enjoying themselves? Or fanboying over a band even if they are not good? Snazzy outro though 4. Dancing Shoes - Very upbeat. Feels like pregaming/getting ready and hitting the streets for some club/bars 5. e

>The Beatles Really enjoyed this

Really good album 8/10

Quality album

I don't know why I ignored this band for so long, this was great. I found myself air drumming in several songs and the energy stayed high for nearly the whole thing. "Still Take You Home" is an absolute banger, instantly on more than one playlist. This was like if the strokes were just a little more talented and more fluid with their songwriting. Really good!

absolute classic, heard this a billion times but gave it a re-listen, still brilliant except riot van

Good sounding record. High energy and interesting instrumental hooks and drum parts. Great debut album.

вайбово, претензий нет, но 5 не поставлю. две последние песни были добавлены. в 8 классе фанател больше чем сейчас. подойдет для пьяной драки в британском баре.

Decent Alr rock. Many traxhd sound similar though

not a huge fan of this band overall, but there are some absolute bangers on this thing

Arctic monkeys always hits 🔥

Fantastic stripped down sound. Excellent storytelling. Definitely grabbed from The Strokes sound of the early oughts, not there's nothing wrong with that when it's done this well

Enjoy it didn’t realize how many songs I new 🙂

Very good 👍

I really like this band, but some of their songs can sound repetitive. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

320/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Great music, sometimes the songs sound similar to each other, but very nice album

I've always deemed Arctic Monkeys as overrated but I think I'm basing that off their later stuff because I enjoyed this one Lovely basslines and even better riffs and hooks make this a really good album. Never been a fan of the vocals though. Thought the drumming was a bit naff too. Not a big fan of indie stuff but this was definitely one of the better ones I've heard

I think it's solid. Songs can be kind of same-y. Riot Van and A certain Romance are highlights for me. I listened to it a second time, it's grown on me a bit more. The album is definitely weaker than the individual songs.

4 de manual, discazo de los monos que tienen frio

Influenced by the garage rock revival of the early aughts but way more than a carbon copy of the White Stripes like a lot of bands of the era. Finally a debut album from this list that truly impresses and stands alone without the caveat of "it has its faults but let's see what they go on to do"

I think AM is by far the better album, but it’s still really solid. When the Sun Goes Down is an all timer from them.

Shockingly really good

Great album almost a bit too aggressive at the start gets more complex and interesting in the second half.

Always know AM sound.

This was pretty fun, not gonna lie. Rating: 4.0

The View from the Afternoon I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Fake Tales of San Francisco Mardy Bum When the Sun Goes Down A Certain Romance

really solid album. i was really into this album a decade plus ago, so it was nice to revisit it after some time. it's really aggressive but also has this beautiful sneering attitude that i love. listening to it makes me feel like i am some english dickhead even though i am american. it's like i'm some douche in the corner of a party sneering at all the people having a good time. it's a beautiful feeling. it's not my favorite album of theirs, but it's a romp of a time.

Swenkaa

Really 4.5 stars. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Very good, 8.2ish out of 10, a lot harder than I thought it would be and a couple amazing songs

I've never listened to the whole album before. Pay attention to the lyrics if you're the same. Carrying on a fine tradition of astute social observation combined with cracking indie rock this is a great album. I predict big things for these guys. Four stars.

Not all songs are remarkable, but all of them are fun to listen to. Short, energetic, kind of falling down the stairs songs, creative riffs, moments of low energy between some songs to recover. An honest good listen. Out of 10, 7,5 with some tranquility.

Ça réinvente pas la roue mais c'est quand même fun, ça bouge et ça se prend pas trop la tête.

An objectively great album but not my favourite of theirs. I think I prefer them when they got all pretentious but hey still some absolute bangers.

Really enjoyed this album.

There are some ridiculously infectious riffs in this album. I love the phrasing, the timing, the lyrics...so refreshing, what a debut.

i liked this album! it does have a very consistent sound which can make it hard to distinguish between songs sometimes, however it's a good sound so i can excuse it

A weird one, because I like every single song of this album, but I don't think of it as a five star record.

Unpretentious shallow pentatonic riffs that might seem stale in hindsight but keep fresh under Turner’s direct and authentic storytelling. As a sum of simple parts it has no right to hold up as well as it does, just puts you in a sweaty dark venue where you belong. As an album it maybe trades this for replayability compared to later albums (excluding a handful of songs), and at points it maybe like I care more for the energy than the songwriting, but to me that’s an absolutely valid genre of album.

This album rules. One of my favorite concerts was for their 2nd albums tour in Oakland where they played the majority of this album. Standing bout 10 ft away from the stage, pit opened next to me and other dude from college, and we basically held the wall to protect the people we were with. Amazing time. I know When the Sun Goes Down gets all the hype in the US (although spotify apparently has mostly normalized), but I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefoor has a forever spot on my Turn Up playlist. Aware that some of the middle songs really just turn pretty basic so not a 5, but damn close. Should be one of the albums you introduce people to for rock/punk blend imo.

Super Bri-ish The hipster kids were right about this one

The Arctic Monkeys sometimes get a bad rep due to a combination of people who assure that they're extremely indie (which they're not) and snobs that dislike them because they're mainstream. It's sad, really, since they have some records that show their ability to write, perform and record songs. Tracks like Riot Van, When the Sun goes down, and especially A Certain Romance, serve as guarantors of their talent. Just try to let go of your prejudices and give them a real chance.

Never really knew about the Arctic Monkeys but I liked this, will be back.

I’ve never listened to a full Arctic Monkeys album before, until now! It was the perfect soundtrack for this Friday morning. This album had the right energy and enough hooks to reel me in. 4 stars.

I power cleaned my house and yard banging my head to this.

Very fun! Should listen to the lyrics a bit better probably, but it reminds me of my boyfriend cause it's one of his favorites. Makes me want to be an English teenager

I didn't love these guys when they came out but I really like 'em now. I think they matured well and I appreciate going back and listening to the older stuff. Coincidentally, my favourite album is tranquility based which I guess old school fans hate.

It's okay. It's lasted better than some of their contemporaries but their big thing was Alex Turner singing in his native accent, which was hardly original.

Hammer opener und gaht guet wieter. Still take you home hät sonen gemeine Text und dänn sindene d'Wort na uusgange "Oh-whoa da da" - trotzdäm äs Lied mit drive. I really enjoy this album. It’s a lot of phun and my personal favorite from the band. I feel like half of these are classic tracks for them. There isn’t a song I dislike. So much energy, so cheeky, so good. Start to finish I think it’s damn near perfect. 4/5

Obviously, I've heard a few of their tracks before, I don't live in a cave! I've never felt the urge to listen to a whole album though. It was pretty good, better than I was expecting. I really liked the lyrics, there was something unique and raw about them. The music wasn't bad either. There were multiple highlights and only a couple of tracks where I started to get bored. I have a hunch it will grow on me when I listen to it again, which I plan to do.

Klassiker, härlig stökig altrock.

Sharp, pulsing, and (for the time) genuinely modern rock, carving a new direction for the genre. It didn’t necessarily follow that direction, but I still really enjoy this album. Feels like a next step from the garage rock of the Strokes and the White Stripes, with a British twist. Best song: Fake Tales of San Francisco

There are some bangers on this album. Have always been more of a fan of AM, but this one deserves more credit than I was giving.

After the musical doldrums of the early 2000’s this album was a breath of fresh Yorkshire air, with the tang of taxi exhaust, Lynx deodorant and chip shop vinegar. These lads are from just up the road from where I live and I’ve probably stood in the same queue outside the station waiting for a taxi to High Green via Hillsborough, please. Authentic Sheffield steel!

Pretty decent and enjoyable for an album of this genre and this period. It's entertaining, the music is solid and it has enough punk energy in it not to fall into cheesy pseudo rebel rock.

Already knew and reacted to this album beforehand. I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

Great performances on all fronts. Reeks of youth.

This was such a classic album for me in college, I had a burned copy that I listened straight through all the time. Tons of fun to revisit. 3.7/5

"I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" and "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured" all day, everyday.

A good album of early Artic Monkeys. Rough and ready with some melodic tracks. Best fake tales of San Francisco

Hyvä ja menevä indielevy! En ollut tätä debyyttiä kuullut, joten käsitys bändistä oli myöhemmän tuotannon muokkaamana enemmän poprock, mut täähän oli aika kiinnostava.

right bangah

This is my artic monkeys album. Less lounge, more rock.

Great album. Already familiar with a couple of tracks, like I bet you look good on the dance floor, but the rest of the album was a rockin’ surprise!

Banging Indie tunes with a Sheffield accent

A strong debut album, especially for rock music from this era. Tight and catchy. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do.

strays a little close to generic brit rock at times, but there are some real classics in here. I prefer the more croonery sounds of AM but this is also very very solid in my opinion

Red Light Indicates Doors are Secure was my introduction to this band. I initially ignored them cause of the name or something, I don’t remember. But my friend showed me red light without saying who it was and I was in. This album is fun and I love the angular and unique guitar riffs. Not a bad track on here.

I loved it. I heard it before. 8/10

I really liked it at first I thought they were gonna all sound the same but they had a couple in there that threw it off in a good way.

You know, it's been a while since I got one of these sorts of 2000s alt-rock bands that were hyped up like crazy by the British media. Some of the albums I've listened to that fit this category are albums that I really liked, with Is This It by the Strokes being a particular highlight. Others were much less interesting. Ask me to say anything about Highly Evolved by the Vines. I couldn't. Fortunately, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys leans a lot closer to the former than the latter. This album's great! This is a very consistent album, both in theming and quality. Starting with the theming, a lot of the album is about British nightlife and clubbing, which is something that I can't relate to. However, the writing's good, so the repeated themes work here and don't make the album feel too repetitive. But what really sticks out to me is just how good this songs are. "The View From The Afternoon" serves as a good first impression for what this album is going to be like. I'm not huge on Alex Turner's singing myself, but I think it works with the general vibe of the album and its songs. The instrumentals are what really appeal to me here. They're all excellent. I especially love the album's lead single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor." This song is a perfect representation of what makes this album so good. The other big single, "When The Sun Goes Down" is also great. Overall, while I wouldn't call this my favorite indie debut of the 2000s (I do still prefer Is This It), WPSIATWIN is an amazing first-showing of a band that I can now say I like. High 4/5.

Very Borderlands 1 feel. I like it.

Great album

Solid album that at the time, felt like a new era in British rock. Lyrics and delivery are interesting and guitar parts are angular and catchy

Having heard only one song that was popular on the radio, this album far exceeded my expectations.

This album has such a retro feel to it. College dorm rooms, grungy little record stores, etc. It sounds like a precise tick on the timeline.

We're probably less than 2 years away from the British press anointing another band as the saviors of rock and roll for their generation. Fortunately, with Oasis and Arctic Monkeys, they weren't all that far off.

Not my favorite of the crop of post-Strokes British rock bands but the rips are sharp and Alex Turner mixes both funny and poignant lyrics so I'm satisfied enough.

I liked it more as it went along. Will listen again. Closer to 3.5, but rounding up.

Parhaat: When The Sun Goes Down, From The Ritz To The Rubble, A Certain Romance, Dancing Shoes, Mardy Bum

From the Ritz to the Rubble is such a fucking sick song. this is classic garage rock sound to me. Alex turner has such a defined voice

Fajne przyjmene. Taki arctic monkeys klasyczny przez lata, ale dobrze się tego słucha. Kilka kawałków się wyróżnia. 4/5

Rotzig, rockig und melodisch. Geradeaus, stimmig und lässig. Melancholisch, laut und leise

Good album

I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor // Fake Tales Of San Francisco // Riot Van // Mardy Bum // When The Sun Goes Down //

I'll lay my cards out now: I've never been a fan of this band. granted, my experience with them was somewhat limited, and it was mostly with the big hits off their biggest album, AM. more power to you if you like this era of Arctic Monkeys, but I never got anything out of "R U Mine?" or "Do I Wanna Know?" or "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" (they were asking a lot of questions on that album cycle, I guess). but, even with my prior personal bias against this band going into their debut, I have to admit, this definitely has game. the Monkeys' adoration of bands like The Strokes is pretty easy to see, but I think they bring a certain British finesse to the whole thing which gives it a unique angle. a lot of the basslines get pretty active! Alex Turner's lead vocals, usually my main sticking point with anything AM-related, are pretty tolerable here. thankfully, he's got a pretty hard-rocking rhythm section behind him. the best moments here are the ones that feel truly explosive. I'm not quite as into their softer side. decent 7/10.

Appropriately beginning my listening of the 1001 albums with probably the last “new” album/artist to make an impression on me. Still stands out with its energy and lyrics.

I had a great time listening to it. My fav track is I bet you look good on the dance floor

Groovy little album

Maybe I've listened to this and its derivates over the past 20 years too much, but it feels a bit boring to me. Still a good album with some punchy songs and great bangers on there. One of the best 2000's rock albums.

Gotta love some Arctic Monkeys from before Alex Turner decided that his true passion lies in writing the most boring shit imaginable. Not as good as "Favourite Worst Nightmare", but still a rare gem in the infinite slop ocean of garage rock revival. What makes this so much better than something like The Black Keys? I'd say "the vibes", but even I don't know what that truly means. Four outta five.

I was all set to be bored with these indie darlings. But I kinda love them

When it's good it's very good. Some of the songs were very overplayed when it was new but it's been long enough now that I can enjoy them again. But of filler towards the middle and end, but good overall.

One of the better Arctic monkeys albums

That was a solid listen

I liked it more than I thought I would.

Memories of downloading albums off Limewire on wifi stolen from my neighbors. Can't remember if I got hyped for this band from Fluxblog or the early days of Pitchfork - but I know they (mostly) lived up to that hype. Man, I miss the internet before it turned into an ad-laden, disinformation infested, AI nightmare.

Funky guitar riffsmatched with awesome basslines, upbeat drums that all work together with the lead singers vocals. Arctic monkeys are such a fantastic band. Only reason not 5 stars is most songs when I skimmed the lyrics were love songs and not bad lyrically but if they had better word play/ meaning

8/10 Highlights: IBYLGOTD Fake Tales of San Francisco When the Sun Goes Down From the Ritz to the Rubble

This is a very upbeat, fun record from start to finish. A good mix of 80s punk with some Rolling Stones influence thrown in, the pacing on this album was so good, I felt like it was only 20 minutes long despite it being over twice that length. While Arctic Monkeys very much gained more popularity in the 2010s, this record is a much more accurate representation of their essence to me. A great band nonetheless and this album still hits in 2024. Notable Tracks: - The View From The Afternoon - fun, fast-paced track to open - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - Dancing Shoes - Riot Van - nice change of pace amidst punk chaos - Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But... - A Certain Romance 8/10

The Libertines ran so the Arctic Monkeys could run a little slower behind them. British Indie garagey post-punk revival with a rawer intensity than I remembered. A lot of good songs with appealing music that can range up to a noisy organized chaos, but not enough so to reduce its general appeal. Prominent, simple bass lines pair with active drumming to create a danceable beat, while guitars can be a bit more choppy/spastic or laying down a catchy melody, along with clear vocals with singable melodies on top that draw attention. It has a really good sound, each instrument can be heard in isolation but they all mix together well. The sound is consistent, which also makes it a bit repetitive, which makes the weaker tracks skippable because they’re not bringing anything new to the table. Solid album that I intend to give more chances now that it’s come back up.

This album rocks

Very good album. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be adding this to my YTM Library.

4☆/5 11.01.2024

My whole youth I could have sworn he was wearing a T-shirt, my mind is blown to see that it's actually a button down. This album doesn't take off for a single song- no misses. When I was a kid I loved this album but I underestimated how impressive the degree of difficulty of some of these songs. It's got a lot of what I like about punk and grunge with a little bit more musicality and space for some of the sounds to breathe. Great epitome of a decade.

I was surprised I liked this band. I like the lead vocals and the high energy music. Everything about the music on the album seemed to work for me. I'm just very surprised.

Really solid debut album. Probably a 3.75, but listened to this 4 times today and really enjoyed, so I’m going 4.

I've never been an Arctic Monkeys fan, I don't hate them, I just never paid them any attention. They were popular at a time when I didn't think it was cool to be popular, a time when I was too busy listening to the hardcore punk albums of the 70s and 80s. I can't say I was surprised I loved this album all the way through. Arctic Monkeys takes everything I love about The Strokes, The White Stripes, and other early 2000s alt rock bands and reflects a familiarity that is comforting while introducing their own sound into the mix to keep it fresh.

Wow....did not see this one coming. Excellent fun quick album. 13 songs in 40 minutes. Rock/punk upbeat and catchy. Didn't recognize a single song and still enjoyed it.

A fantastic debut album, it was overlooked when released. Solid offerings.

Opens up with an ass kicking! Nice blend of post-punk, garage, and Britpop going on here. Really seems to take the best from each and just rocks out with it.

holy moly this was awesome! I honestly can't believe I've managed to avoid the Arctic Monkeys thus far, I was unaware they did some proper good rock like this. didn't take any proper notes while listening, but it's got everything... it's energetic, groovy, rockin. a struggle to pick favourites as well. I felt... nourished? after listening, very satisfying. rated as a 4 rn, but will probably grow to a 5 upon relistening. GOD THE BRITS ARE GOOD.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut studio album by Arctic Monkeys, originally released in 2006. I was only really familiar with the Arctic Monkey's later work like the record AM. This is so different, but in a good way! I never realized how influenced they were by Britpop. They also keep a lot of that 2000s garage rock influence that was so popular at the time. The songwriting is pretty solid too. This shit really rocks! It's crazy to see how much their sound changed over the years. It's like a completely different band.

I only heard this album for the first time in 2013 or so, but it still has such a nostalgic feeling for me

Arrangements are cool. At first I thought that It bored me, maybe it's designed to be a slow burn...re-listening made me change my mind, I don't know why, but they are kind of addictive. Solid 4/5, maybe even higher.

Bought this one the week it came out!

The View from the Afternoon 4.1 I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor 4.3 Fake Tales of San Francisco 4.3 Dancing Shoes 4.2 You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight at Me 4 Still Take You Home 4 Riot Van 4 Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured 4.1 Mardy Bum 4.2 Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But… 3.8 When the Sun Goes Down 4.3 From the Ritz to the Rubble 3.8 A Certain Romance 4.5 Score: 4.123076923

i actually liked this album a lot some of the songs were a bit samey since I'm sure they used the same riffs The View From The Afternoon was my fave song off the album easy

A great debut album. Thought-provoking, raw lyrics with infectious hooks combined with an understated voice that blends into a well mixed band.

4 stars just because a couple of tracks still hit close to my heart and are undoubtly very good songs. But maybe this album belongs too much to the years it came out

2006. This album fucks! I was never into the Arctic Monkeys at the time, but glad I listened to this now. It's like The Strokes, but harder. Kind of the like The Hives, too. I think the appeal is just the tightness all-around. Alex Turner's blasé, punkish style reels you in for this ride. Sometimes it just sounds like he's riffing about not getting his way in public - it's cool. Fav Song: From the Ritz to the Rubble

Back in the day this wasn't really my particular scene, but of course I was aware of the band. I'm impressed that the whole album is genuinely quality, with loads of great songs, tons of energy and loads of great hooks. It's still not something I'd naturally flock to but I have to admit it's really good. It's a really accomplished debut.

Good album but wish there was real arctic monkeys

Liked this a lot! Going to give it another listen when I have more time so I can pick my favorite tracks.

Senior year of college, my job involved a significant commute 2-3 days a week. This was the soundtrack to that commute (at least for the second half of that school year, since the album came out in January at the start of my final college semester). Didn’t have to listen today, because I know it pretty well. Dancefloor and Fake Tales are indie classics.

Infectious and fun. Reflections of young British nightlife.

I thought the Arctic Monkeys were one of those virtually interchangeable radio rock bands, but this was a fun album. Maybe my favorite post-2000s rock album yet given from the list.

I remember when this came out. There was so much excitement around the Arctic Monkeys, but the album ended up being a big disappointment after hearing the raw earlier tapes. Songs like Mardy Bum and especially Riot Van are so over produced here. I can't listen to this sleepy version of Riot Van here. The original featured Alex Turner singing and playing solo guitar, which was so much better. Having said all of that, it's still a good album! Liked Songs Added: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor Fake Tales Of San Francisco You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me From The Ritz To The Rubble A Certain Romance

A blistering Sheffield album of indie that changed the face of indie music. I've never been mega into AM, but relistening to this reminded me how good and how influential this album was in 2006.

An album always in the background of my adolescence, being able to dedicate some time to really take it in now I'm beyond that age, and it's such a solid project, somehow raw and polished, juvenile and mature, 2000s Arctic Monkeys were something else.

I can get with some garage rock. I like how like 80% of this album is themed around British nightlife/pub culture and yet never feels stale. Each track has a story to tell amid the crashing drums and clangy guitar chords. It's just a fun romp, as were most other garage rock acts from this era.

good record but as long not their best. (3.5/5.0) big fan of arctic monkeys and one of the last good mainstream bands that still drops music
